Maternal deaths reduced by 40 percent at Ho Technical Hospital

The Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH) has reduced pregnancy-related deaths by 40 per cent in  2022.

The Teaching Hospital recorded 14 maternal losses in 2022, down from 23 in 2021 while neonatal deaths slightly increased from 99 in 2021 to 103 in 2022.

Dr John Tampouri, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Hospital, said this at the 2022 Annual Performance Review.

He said there was “a slight decrease” in live births from 1,975 to 1,909.

He said, “we are committed to strengthening our maternal and neonatal healthcare services to improve the outcome for both mother and child.”

The CEO said although deaths recorded at the facility increased from 1,016 to 1,018, it represented a decrease in the death rate from 9.2 to 8.6 per cent and assured: “we are committed to continuously improving our patient outcomes and reducing our mortality rate even further.”

Out-Patient Department attendance for the year under review stood at 194,717, from 158,226 the year before, while admissions also rose from 11,051 to 12,380.

The Teaching Hospital performed a total of 2,489 surgeries in 2022, a sharp rise from 1,856 the prior year.

There were more than 13,000 radiology procedures and over 8,000 ultrasound services provided as general laboratory procedures increased from 90,000 to 108,000.

He said the rise in the number of services rendered showed growing trust and confidence in the community.

The annual review was on the theme: “Translating Our Innovative Tertiary Health Services, Medical Education and Research into Medical/Health Tourism,” and the CEO said the institution most celebrated the increase in staff strength as it reached for the spot as the nation’s top health tourism destination

“One of our key achievements is the growth in our staff strength, which has increased from 1,497 in 2021 to 1,553 in 2022. We have also seen a significant increase in the number of House Officers and Clinical Staff from UHAS, which is a testament to the bonding between UHAS and HTH.

“Despite the increase in the human resource, we have also experienced an increase in attrition and separation from 44 in 2021 to 95 in 2022, and we remain steadfast in our efforts to retain and attract the best talent to deliver the innovative tertiary health care, medical education and research aimed at making the Hospital the medical tourism destination of Ghana,” the CEO stated.

Dr Tampouri said the expansion of partnerships with other healthcare providers and spirited organisations both local and international, helped boost its growth, and would be sustained.

He said a mobile clinic project launched recently was realised through the collaborative efforts of the Anglican Church Diocese and the Rotary Club.

The CEO used the occasion to draw stakeholder attention to the accompanying challenges of accommodation.

“The greatest challenge facing us is inadequate accommodation. Our wards are congested, especially the Accident and Emergency Department. The occupancy rate at the Emergency Department in 2022 was 151.8 per cent even though the average length of stay has decreased drastically to two days compared to five days in 2021.

“Another major worry is that while the staff numbers have increased, the offices remained the same resulting in congestion in most offices including some Directors who share an office with their staff. The issue of infrastructure (service delivery areas, offices, accommodation, and health technologies) is critical to enable us to achieve our medical tourism agenda.

“We want to exert a lot of effort in preparing ourselves for international accreditation programmes such as ISO 15819 and JCI Accreditation to enable the hospital to attract international patients.

To this end we are calling on the Government to create the necessary environment for medical tourism such as appropriate legislation and attractive medical travel environment for clients who wants to visit Ghana for medical/health tourism,” he said.

The review conference was attended by staff and management of the hospital as well as heads of sister facilities from across the country.

Present also was Professor Lydia Aziato, Vice Chancellor of the University for Health, and Allied Sciences (UHAS), who called for more training collaboration and consideration for traditional medicine and non-drug therapies.

Mr Felix Nyanteh, a Member of the Hospital’s Board, who chaired the event, said innovation remained crucial to reaching the sought heights of impact in the lives of humanity.

He delivered a special appreciation form the Board and Management to the Volta Development Forum, the leading advocacy group in the Volta Region, for its contributions to the success of the health facility.

Deserving staff were awarded plaques for their dedication and commitment during the year.

  • NHIA initiates “online Policy” to make information on claims payments easy

NHIA initiates “online Policy” to make information on claims payments easy

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has launched an online policy to improve on transparency and accountability into the payment of claims for the service providers and other stakeholders.

Dubbed, “Sunshine Policy,” the amount, date, and period the claims paid covers would be exhibited on the website to ensure that information flow was accurate to defuse misinformation among service providers and other stakeholders.

Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye, Chief Executive of the NHIA who launched the policy said it was to address the problem that had been associated with the scheme for the past 20 years where all payments relating to facilities had been shrouded in secrecy between the scheme and the service providers.

He explained that the new policy would also eliminate situations where suppliers of medicines that were given to patients knew not when and how payments were made.

“This is a crucial policy to ensure that anybody dealing with hospitals will know that something is going to them.”

Dr Okoe-Boye said the policy would greatly impact stakeholders’ confidence in the Scheme and promote a congenial relationship among all parties.

“We now have a link on our website where all the players in the health sector have access to what we have paid, when we paid the money to, and for what we paid them,” he added.

He noted that NHIA had published claims payments to its credentialed healthcare facilities in January and February 2023 under the new policy on its website adding that the publication of the claims payments would be made available to the appropriate stakeholders on the website on monthly basis as a mark of keeping faith and staying abreast with all its valued stakeholders.

“The NHIA is working hard to create more efficiencies in its claims management processes and reduce the gap between amounts paid and the period for which claims have been duly submitted and vetted,” he added.

Under the programme, some selected organisations such as the teaching hospitals, regional hospitals, Ghana Health Service, Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, Ghana Registered Midwives Association, Pharmaceutical Importers and Wholesalers Association of Ghana and other bodies and service providers can easily check and verify when money is paid.

Mr Oswald Essuah-Mensah, NHIS, Ag. Director, Corporate Affairs who took the media through the link on the website said those

  • Excise Duty Amendment Bill passage will promote good health – Mr. Labram Musah

Excise Duty Amendment Bill passage will promote good health – Mr. Labram Musah

Mr. Labram Musah, the National Coordinator for the Ghana Non-Communicable Disease Alliance (GhNCDA), has said the passage of the Excise Duty and Tax Stamp (Amendment) Bills will contribute to fostering healthy living in the country.

Hence, the main objective for the passage of the bills should be shifted from mainly revenue generation to Health Promotional Tax to help accelerate the passage of the bills in parliament.

Mr. Mush was speaking at a two-day Roundtable Discussion on Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), Diabetes and Obesity event organized by the Ministry of Health (MoH) at Aburi in the Akuapim South Municipality.

The event was funded mostly by the World Heart Federation (WHF) and the Stroke Association Support Network (SASNET).

The aim was to assemble various stakeholders to agree on an action plan to be implemented to improve the health outcomes of people living with CVD, Diabetes and Obesity.

Mr. Musah, said, a study conducted by the GhNCDA showed, “Obesity is gaining ground in developing countries. 4.5 out of 11 Ghanaian children are obese. Currently, 7 out of 10 Ghanaian adults are obese”.

The influx of cheap, but unhealthy foods and western lifestyles through aggressive food marketing, he noted had led to high consumption of junk foods, sometimes causing food addictions, especially, among children.

Mr. Musah said 30 percent of all school-age children did not eat fruit daily as 44 percent drunk soda every day at the detriment of their health unknowingly.

“We all do it. We buy these drinks for our children to school every day and ignore the consequences of it. If the bill is passed in parliament prices will rise. When prices increase, the demand for it will reduce”, he said.

Mr. Musah, indicated that Ghana would not be the only country to have passed a bill to check the consumption of unhealthy foods as over 80 countries had policies and laws on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSB).

He, therefore, appealed to the MoH to support the passage of the Excise Duty and Tax Stamp (Amendment) Bills in parliament to contribute to minimizing the number of recorded cases of the three rising health conditions.

In addition, Mrs. Elizabeth E. Denyoh, the Chairperson-Elect of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Africa Region, appealed to the government to include fruits in the school feeding programme as most children did not eat fruits.

“This looks big, but if we take Akim Oda, where the majority of oranges come from in Ghana, we could include one orange into the school feeding programme per child. If we look at Sunyani, where we have pawpaw, we can include one small pawpaw in school feeding”, she said.

Again, Mrs. Denyoh, said apart from promoting healthy food consumption, the Ghana Education Service must encourage play back into schools to ensure a rise in the activeness of children.

Port Health destroys 38 containers of goods in 2022

The Port Health in Tema burnt and destroyed 38 containers of unwholesome goods and another 7,643 kilograms of other goods in year 2022, Mr. Raphael Marfo, the Director of Port Health in Tema has said.

The products, which included frozen foods, canned foods, and medicines among others, were destroyed because they might have gone bad, or damaged, upon their arrival in the country according to Mr Marfo, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Tema.

He mentioned various methods of destruction, such as burying, crashing, incineration, and mixing the objects with trash.

He added that a total of 17 organizations had their items destroyed, and that the process was observed by Port Health officials, Agents, Security Guards, and other interested parties.

He urged food exporters to always contact the Port Health for an inspection of their products and subsequent issuance of a certificate, noting that the Port Health had the responsibility for ensuring the wholesomeness of food items.

He added that even, “if they had received approval from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), they still needed to contact my organization.”

Mr Marfo revealed that the some exporters who refused to acquire wholesomeness licence from the Port Health authorities, had their food products destroyed once they arrived at their destinations.

He noted that in 2022, his organization disinfected 41 ships, of which 13 were done in the first quarter, 14 in the second, and 12 and 2 respectively in the third and fourth as part of the vector cintrol operations on ships.

The Port Health Director also stated that eight ships received medical chest certificates while a total of 12 ships obtained sanitation certificates during the time.

He clarified that the medical chest certificate was given to a ship following an examination of its hospital to make sure it has all necessary supplies on board in accordance with applicable maritime laws.

He added that if one medication was discovered to have expired, it had to be taken out and replaced before such a certificate could be given.

Wa West District Hospital receives medical equipment from MP

The Wa West District Hospital at Wechaiu has taken delivery of a Diathermy machine to support the delivery of quality healthcare services to the people in the constituency and beyond.

Superintendent (RTD) Mr Peter Lanchene Toobu, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Wa West Constituency, donated the equipment at the request of the Hospital.

The equipment would help facilitate surgical procedures at the facility and improve the well-being of the people in the constituency.

Mr Olinaa Ababaasa, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Officer for the Wa West Constituency, led a team from the party in the constituency to hand over the machine to the Hospital at Wechiau on behalf of the MP.

He explained that the Hospital made requests for the facility’s improvement and the MP got them the Diathermy machine.

“What moved the MP is the fact that the Hospital does a lot of operations but lacked this special machine to facilitate their work,” he explained.

Mr Abaabasa indicated that the MP had invested over GHȻ100,000.00 into the health sector in the constituency, and said he was committed to doing more.

Dr Emmanuel Frimpong Junior, the Medical Officer of the Wa West District, expressed gratitude to the MP for the support and said the equipment would augment their efforts to serve the people well.

He said the facility had been without essential equipment like the Diathermy Machine over the years, which impeded their efforts to deliver surgical procedures with speed.

Dr Frimpong Jnr, who is also the Clinical Care Coordinator, said the Diathermy Machine was used for coordination of tissues during theater procedures, especially in surgeries where a lot of bleeding is anticipated as it also helps to hasten surgical procedures.

“With the Diathermy, you do not spend much in coagulating vessels; you do not spend time in tying vessels…so a surgery that you would use like 40 minutes to complete, you can do that in 25 to 30 minutes.

Dr Frimpong Jnr expressed his appreciation to the MP and promised to ensure the proper maintenance of the machines.

President Akufo-Addo honors JN Products for service in COVID-19 fight

Mr Joseph Nii Sempe Nyarko, Chief Executive Officer of JN Products, has been honoured by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for his remarkable and selfless service in the fight to contain COVID-19 when it hit the country in 2020.

In his citation, Mr Nyarko was commended for responding positively to the President’s call on local manufacturers to venture into the local production of alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

He was also recognised for his distinguished humanitarian services to the people of Ghana during COVID-19.

The President said the production of his Silky Style Hand Sanitizer” did not only help make hand sanitizers readily available, but it also came at a cheaper price to meet the demand for the product in the country.

The citation read: Following the call by the government for local manufacturing companies to produce hand sanitizers with the assurance of an expedited regulatory approval process by the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), J.N Products Limited responded positively and ventured into the productions of “Silky Style Hand Sanitizer.”

This initiative did not only help make hand sanitizers readily available but also at a cheaper price to meet the demand for the product in the country.

Even though Ghana was initially classified among the African countries with the vulnerability, as well as limited capacity to respond to the viral disease, the ease of accessibility and affordability of hand sanitizers coupled with the other protocols and measures instituted by government and other stakeholders greatly assisted to contain the coronavirus and won the country commendations from the international community.

In recognition of your contribution towards the country’s fight against the covid-19 pandemic, the Republic of Ghana confers on you: J.N. Products Limited, the Presidential award honour of the Republic of Ghana: distinguished service.

I am coming for you again – Maurice Ampaw to Afia Schwarzenegger

Legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw has promised to press a new contempt charge against media personality, Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa alias Afia Schwarzenegger.

According to him, he has evidence to prove that Afia has among other things violated a bond of good behaviour despite being the subject of a charge of contempt by a court.

“I gave her a lot of chance and she is back misbehaving on social media and I have gathered evidence to that effect, I am taking Afia to court for continuous contempt. The court made her sign a bond of good behaviour for three years, I am going to execute the bail bond against her,” Maurice Ampaw told Oman Channel in an interview.

He was speaking after leading one of his clients, a Canadian-based fashion designer to press defamation charges against Kumawood actor, Ogyam who had accused his client of having a sexual relationship with a popular pastor.

Ogyam in a series of YouTube videos accused Abena Boafowaa of sleeping with the founder and leader of the Universal Spiritual Outreach church, Bishop Kwabena Asiamah alias Ajagurajah.

The actor has since recanted all the allegations following the lawsuit brought against him.

In February this year, a Tema High Court fined Afia Schwarzenegger GH¢60,000 in a contempt led by lawyer Maurice Ampaw.

The court additionally imposed GH¢5,000 fine on the social media celebrity, to be paid to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr Benard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, for defamatory comments against him.

The court further ordered Afia Schwarzenegger, to sign a bond of good behaviour for 36 months and was also ordered not to make any pronouncements or comment on the case during the bond period.

Any breach of the orders, it was said, would result in her appearance before the court.

The fine was imposed after the court granted her prayer to vary 10-day jail term for refusing to appear before the court after Mr Boasiako sued her for contempt.

Harold’s wife who looked elegant and snatched in a fully beaded kente gown was unfortunately called out for her choice of hair. The bride who comfortably rocked a pixie fringe for her big day ended up being trolled by critics.

She implicitly stated that not every man is interested in settling down with a fancy woman. One who is so much invested in buying and wear the best hair extension or clothes or a people-pleaser.

In Afia’s goodwill message to the couple, she wrote: “You marry based on who will be your PEACE and support your GROWTH not who social media likes or who wears the best wigs and fancy dressing.”

Parts of her Facebook message read: “I PRAY that this marriage is blessed to be a testimony to the world @haroldamenyah congratulations to you and wifey.”

Growing up, I have always known that Fetri Detsi was of Ewe descent, but I do not know where Telande will choose to place her new creation.

She started by boiling fresh okro in a clean pot of water with a dash of bicarbonate soda over medium heat. Next, she pan-grilled red and green scotch pepper, tomatoes and a piece of stinky fish (momone) until charred.

Then, she transferred smoky vegetables into the asana, grinding them with chopped onions and a few pieces of ginger.

Finally, she added the boiled okro and mashed them all together. You are done!

Your fetri toto is ready to be paired with your favourite protein and side.

  • Gwyneth Paltrow awarded $1 and cleared of fault over ski crash

Gwyneth Paltrow awarded $1 and cleared of fault over ski crash

Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow has thanked jurors who found her not liable for a 2016 ski crash at a resort in the US state of Utah.

Retired optometrist Terry Sanderson, 76, had said Ms Paltrow crashed into him, inflicting life-changing injuries.

Mr Sanderson, who was seeking $300,000 (£245,000) in damages, said Thursday’s verdict was “very disappointing”.

Jurors sided with Ms Paltrow, 50, who blamed Mr Sanderson for the accident and countersued for $1 plus legal fees.

Listening to the verdict in court, Ms Paltrow was expressionless, staring straight ahead and appearing to nod slightly. She then walked out.

As she left, she briefly stopped to speak to Mr Sanderson. He later said she told him: “I wish you well.” He replied: “Thank you dear.”

In a statement posted as an Instagram story to her 8.3 million followers, the Oscar winner said: “I felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised my integrity.”

She said she was pleased with the outcome and thanked the judge and eight-member jury for “their thoughtfulness in handling this case”.

It took the jury three hours of deliberation to unanimously find Mr Sanderson entirely at fault for the incident, and award Ms Paltrow the symbolic sum she had sought.

    Contradictory stories

Speaking to media outside, her lawyer Steve Owens said Ms Paltrow “has a history of advocating for what she believes in”.

“This situation was no different and she will continue to stand up for what is right,” he said.

Afterwards Mr Sanderson maintained he was the one hit on the slope and suggested that Ms Paltrow’s star power had helped her in court.

“You get some assumed credibility from being a famous person,” he said. “Really, who wants to take on a celebrity?”

The two-week trial heard from dozens of witnesses with contradictory stories about who crashed into whom.

In Mr Sanderson’s telling, the actress slammed into him on a beginners’ slope at Deer Valley Resort in Park City. Ms Paltrow then skied away while he remained unconscious in the snow with broken ribs, Mr Sanderson said.

The accident left him with life-altering brain trauma, he testified.

On the stand, the Shakespeare in Love and Iron Man star offered an entirely different account.

She said Mr Sanderson had skied directly into her back as she went down the slope with her two children.

“I thought, ‘Is this a practical joke? Is someone doing something perverted? This is really, really strange,’” she said in her testimony.

Mr Sanderson was conscious when she skied away, Paltrow said, and even apologised to her.

Paltrow’s lawyers worked to undermine Mr Sanderson’s claim that his health was ruined by the crash, pointing out a long list of trips he took after the accident to South America, Europe and Morocco.

And they accused Mr Sanderson of trying to exploit their client’s fame, asking about an email he sent to his daughters shortly after the collision, in which he wrote: “I’m famous”.

The case hinged on skiing etiquette, with both parties claiming that they were the downhill skier and therefore had right of way.

Graphic showing the two versions of what happened: jurors must decide who was higher up and therefore to blame for the collision but both Sanderson and Paltrow claim to have been further downhill

But the testimony also contained several inadvertently funny moments, with lawyers asking Ms Paltrow about her height, her fashion, and how close she was with singer Taylor Swift.

There was also a mini-courtroom battle over the provision of a “gift” from Ms Paltrow to court security staff, which was ultimately denied by the judge. One of Ms Paltrow’s security guards later told BBC News that she had wanted to buy them lunch.

And in another exchange, Kristan VanOrman, one of Mr Sanderson’s lawyers, told Ms Paltrow during cross-examination that she was jealous of her height.

Speaking to reporters after the verdict, the lawyer said she was “not starstruck” during the trial. “I have a newfound appreciation for Ms Paltrow if she has to deal with all this [media attention] on a daily basis,” she said.

Mr Sanderson initially tried to sue Ms Paltrow for $3.1m, but that case was dismissed.

  • Shamima Muslim: Why not you?

    Shamima Muslim: Why not you?

When I received the call to make a statement here today, I was initially stunned, then excited, and then really anxious. I asked myself, why me? But then I asked myself, why not me?

I am a veil-wearing Muslim woman from one of the smallest regions in Ghana; the Upper West, among one of the smallest ethnic groups in the country, the Wala. In many ways, I am a minority of a minority. In many spaces I’ve been in, I am often the exception and hardly the norm.

But that has never held me back. The more down the ladder I appear to be, the higher up the ladder I have always aspired to reach. I became one of the first from my immediate family to attain a university education and one of the first, or perhaps, the only woman from my community to have had a primetime voice on radio and television. My exposure and impact helped inspire many young women, particularly, Muslim girls across the country to pursue a career in media and journalism.

I have worked on many development projects to empower marginalised and underrepresented communities and am currently, a founding member of the Alliance for Women in Media Africa, inspired by a similar organisation in the US. Our young dynamic group of media women are working to advance the welfare and visibility of women in media and ensure that the voices, stories and images of African women and girls are equitably represented.

These examples are not cited to wallow in whatever modest successes I may have achieved, but to demonstrate how far I have come, from how far back I am coming from. I may have walked a few steps up to this platform today, but my journey, like the journey of several others,  goes many steps back across multiple generations within many spaces, too numerous to mention.

But let me at least mention my maternal grandmother Alima, an enterprising generous woman who did not have any formal education but encouraged in her daughter an appetite for learning and put her in school. Let me talk about my mother, Hajia Rahmat, who after numerous domestic chores at home had to go out to sell food before she could go to school. She was often late, but she kept going.

My mother says she often walked barefoot to school under the hot sun which will make the ground heat up and burn the soles of her feet. When it became too hot, she would find a patch of grass for a moment’s respite. But she kept going. She became the first woman within her immediate family to attain higher education by progressing to the training college and becoming a teacher and a headmistress. And dare I say she could have gone even further, but she sacrificed her dreams at some point to stay at home to raise her children.

It is because my mother walked for her dreams that today I can run for mine and tomorrow my two daughters will fly for their dreams. That is how progress is made; inch by inch, generation by generation. We keep hitting at it until we completely shatter our glass ceilings. Daughters are the dreams come true of their mothers, and mothers are the greatest hopes for their daughters.

But this is not just a story about mothers and daughters and the power of education to transform, it is also a story about Ghana, about Africa. As a continent that ranks low in many development indices, as we make our way up the ladder for better representation of women, better healthcare, better education, better infrastructure, and better employment, amongst others, the journey up can be daunting with many reasons to despair. Some young Africans may feel that their economic salvation lies elsewhere across the Sahara, beyond the Mediterranean. But no matter how hot the ground gets beneath our feet, the solution is not across but within. We just have to keep going.  We have to keep putting in the work. And generation by generation, we will shatter the ceiling for Africa’s economic prosperity.

To attain the Africa We Want, we must embrace our diversity. One important lesson I learnt early on is the value of community and inclusion. My dear father Mr Ismail Muslim was one of the earliest young men to leave his hometown up in the North to set up a base in the capital down south. He found success early, established a home here and opened up his doors to his community. I grew up not only with my siblings but with aunties, uncles, cousins and close and distant relatives. Our house was a gateway for a whole generation. I learnt the values of service, diversity and inclusion early. My father showed me that you indeed rise by lifting others. And that is a lesson my husband and I are teaching our two sons—and our daughters too.

Africa as the most diverse continent in the world, more than anywhere else, must uphold the value of inclusion. We are so fragmented in nations, ethnicities, gender, class and others that unless we work honestly together for the common good, we cannot lift ourselves and our continent. And in lifting ourselves up, we cannot count our success by the very few who reach the top, but by the many who leave the bottom.

To make progress in Africa, we acknowledge that we have to forge meaningful partnerships. In 2010, I had the rare privilege of being amongst the very first cohort of President Obama’s YALI programme. At the Whitehouse, I was lucky enough to be spotted by him to ask a question. I asked whether it was possible to have a true partnership between a superpower like America and a developing country like Ghana. Obama believed that such a partnership was possible because we have many aligning interests.

Over the years, I have reflected on and refined my question even further. Would America, or the developed world, still be interested in Africa without its natural resources?

Much as this is an important question for our partners to reflect on, it is an even more important question for us in Africa to answer. How else can we maximize the benefits of our natural resources and what new value can we harness the energies and innovations of our young people to create to benefit our people and the world? We must begin to reflect on and act for An Africa Beyond Natural Resources.

And it is gratifying to note that there are many young Africans already working to create value across creative and digital spaces, and others. And in so doing, expanding opportunities as well as solving critical problems in their economies.

Examples abound like Miishe Addy, co-founder of startup logistics powerhouse Jetstream; Maya Famodou working in the venture capital space to inject resources into innovative African Startup; Ama Asantewaa of Black Girls Glow focusing on creating safe spaces for creatives go grow; Mahmoud Jajah of Zongo Innovation Hub training young people in predominantly underserved Muslim communities to become software developers and tech entrepreneurs. Young Africans are putting in the work.

It will be important to acknowledge some support they are already receiving. For instance, the US government is investing USD 350 million in the Digital Transformation with Africa programme to create a transformative ecosystem for technology entrepreneurship. In my part of the country, the USAID Sustainable Shea Initiative is empowering over 400,000 women across Northern Ghana for economic and social impact through the shea industry. We look forward to the sustainable impact of such programmes.

We call on African governments to commit to passing affirmative action policies to help bridge the gender and diversity divide. And to treat with the utmost urgency the need to open up major opportunities for Africa’s ballooning youth population.

In 2011, I had the privilege of meeting Michelle Obama at a forum for young African women leaders in South Africa. She spoke about the need for women to step up and own the spaces they occupy. My life’s journey has been about owning the spaces I occupy. And where those spaces do not exist, to create them. Today I call on all women and youth of Africa to step up and own your space because why not you?

I feel honoured today to share this stage, this space, with a phenomenal woman who has not only stepped up to own her space but is actually rocking it. The highest-ranking female official in the United States who has had her fair share of “firsts” and broken several glass ceilings on her way to the top.  It is a delight to welcome Vice President Kamala Harris to Ghana, the Center of the World, the black star rising. Martin Luther King Jnr, Malcolm X and Maya Angelou were here. Clinton, Bush and Obama were all here. And now it is her turn. I believe we can all affectionately say… Abena Kamala, you made it.

    Thank You

I regret Piercing my ears – Osebo recalls bad boy days

Popular Fashion icon Osebo The Zaraman has revealed that his biggest regret in life is a fashion statement that he made over 25 years ago – piercing his ears.

In an exclusive interview with Onua FM’s Felicia Osei, the Ghanaian fashionista opened up about the decision he made while he was in Europe in 1995.

Osebo, who was a DJ at the time, admitted that he had pierced his ears to connect with his audience and to match up to the extravagant club lifestyle that he was living at the time. However, the fashion mogul has now revealed that he deeply regrets the decision, stating that it was a mistake that he wished he could undo.

The fashionista went on to say that he had decided to do away with the piercing in 1999 after receiving advice from a cab driver. Osebo also revealed that he had been stereotyped because of his look, which had a negative impact on his personal and professional life.

If I ever get the chance, I’ll close the hole but its not possible, he added.

Many Ghanaians reacted to his statements saying that his regret over the ear piercing showed that even the most iconic figures in the fashion industry and entertainment world have moments of self-doubt and regret.

Tattoo vs Pork : Kumchacha hits back at “hypocritical” Sonnie Badu

Prophet Kumchacha, founder of Heaven’s Gate Ministries has slammed UK-based preacher Sonnie Badu over his comment about people who eat pork.

Recall that Sonnie Badu strongly argued that pork is unclean hence people who eat it might end up inviting evil spirits.

His comment generated a debate on social media with people sharing their stances on his comments.

Though it has been weeks since Sonnie Badu made that remark, Prophet Kumchacha has revisited the topic by questioning Sonnie Badu on why he has a tattoo on his body as a preacher.

According to him, the Bible in Leviticus banned pork and tattoos and wondered why the Gospel musician and preacher had tattoos all over his body if he believes pork is not good for people to eat.

Respect and protect your wife but don’t trust her – Prophet

Prophet Prince Elisha Osei Kofi, the Founder and General Overseer of Grace Family Church (formerly Power Embassy Church), has advised married men not to trust their wives but respect them.

“You don’t have to trust women. Women are not to be trusted. We don’t trust ourselves as men, so why should we trust women? Kwabena [referring to the host] do you trust yourself? Let us put you in a room and bring in a naked woman to see if you can handle it. You should not put your trust in your wife. All you have to do is respect her, treat her well, and protect her.”

He went on to say that men should protect their wives and not let them go out alone all the time.

“As a married man, you should not let your wife go to the club by herself. Some men allow their wives to date other men, and if they are unlucky, their wives are pursued by other men. You are a pot-belly man who allows your wife to go out by herself and men with six packs. That is not correct.”

Meanwhile, the man of God has also advised men who engage in long-distance relationships and marriages to be cautious.

Such unions he opined breed cheating and heartbreaks and waste of resources.

  • The origin of the catch phrase “Father Bernard”

The origin of the catch phrase “Father Bernard”

What can cause a grown woman drenched in tears to dive into the grave of a Parish Priest being laid to rest at the cemetery?

A viral clip of a female sympathizer falling face flat on a coffin inside a grave pit with a scream “eiii Father Bernard” has made her an internet sensation.

Days after the clip went viral, content creators on TikTok created hundreds of funny videos from the unfortunate dive at the burial of late Reverend Father Bernard Kofi Ackon who was laid to rest on March 21, 2023.

The late Father Bernard was a Parish Priest of St. John the Baptist Church, Saltpond.

According to testimonies by friends and family, he was loved by all, no wonder, the woman captured in the viral video paid her late respect to the Priest in a grand style.

News of the passing of this Parish Priest was confirmed by the Vicar General of the Archdiocese. According to reports, Father Bernard, “died at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital after he was rushed there in the evening of February 21, 2023.”

The new audio “eiii Father Bernard” has become a social media meme. It is the latest background sound for both old and new videos of people tripping or falling to the ground.

As the motive behind the jump remains a mystery, social media users seem to be having a field day with the 6-second clip which has become rib-cracking content in Ghana and parts of Africa.

However, an Instagram user going by the handle @mihz_hanna_1179 commented on the post and questioned the starlet about whether or not she had to show off her bottom for the public to see it.

She wrote: “Destiny u no fit do video say u no go shake your yansh”

Reacting to the observation from the netizen, Etiko urged the Instagram user to look away from the backside and focus on the message in the video.

Meet the Canadian ‘Gold mafia’ who helps Russians launder money

An Al Jazeera investigative report has uncovered how a Canadian national, resident in Dubai, helps Russians launder money.

Alistair Mathias, a Gold trader and Financial architect who builds money laundering schemes for corrupt politicians, is a member of a gold smuggling syndicate that also launders money out of the African Continent.

According to him, he has been engaged in money laundering activities for over a decade of which corrupt politicians in Russia are among his clients.
“I’ve been doing it for 13 to 14 years,” he said.

Speaking to investigative reporters from Al Jazeera who had posed as Chinese criminals to help his syndicate launder money from China he further disclosed that he smuggles about $40 million worth of gold out of Ghana on a monthly basis.

“In Ghana I do one ton. I do $ 40 million every month out of Ghana. This region I do probably 500 to one ton again. So I do roughly about $70 to $80 million every month.

Recall that Alistair Mathias in 2017 was in the news after he was exonerated by the Court of Appeal in the United Arab Emirates over fraud allegations.

He had been accused of fraud by Ghanaian partner, Henry Osei however, after the ruling he the court dismissed as unsubstantiated and frivolous the allegations of fraud made against him.

Fast forward, March 2023, Al Jazeera has released an expose in which he confessed to engaging in money laundering.

In the investigative piece dubbed ‘Gold Mafia’ it was revealed that Alistair and his partners have business networks that stretch across the African continent and operate in many other countries including Ghana, Zambia, etc.

He was described by the investigative reporters as a financial architect who builds money laundering schemes for corrupt politicians.

Putin will employ the “most dreadful” weaponry if pushed – Belarus

Belarus’ president has issued a warning that if the Kremlin fears collapse, it may use nuclear weapons.

President Alexander Lukashenko asserted that both his nation and Russia were directly threatened by an attack from the West during a yearly speech to MPs and other authorities in Belarus.

Take my word for it; I have never lied to you, the leader of Belarus stated.
The West is ready to attack Belarus and overthrow our government.

He continued, “It is impossible to defeat a nuclear power,” declining to offer any proof for these assertions.

‘If the Russian leadership understands that the situation threatens to cause Russia’s disintegration, it will use the most terrible weapon.’

Mr Lukashenko’s address comes after President Vladimir Putin announced plans to station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.

This would mark the first time Moscow has deployed such missiles outside Russian borders since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union.

Concerns have also been raised these weapons may be accompanied by missiles capable of making intercontinental strikes at some point in the future.

A longstanding ally of the Kremlin, Belarus has not formally entered the war in Ukraine, which has lasted for more than a year and seen thousands killed and millions displaced.

It has nevertheless provided a crucial launchpad for Russian military forces engaged in the conflict, while also regularly conducting joint military training exercises with Russian troops.

Mr Lukashenko’s statements also come after an analyst with Ukraine’s presidential research group said the Russian president has been left in a ‘desperate’ situation by the failures of the Russian invasion so far.

Mykola Bielieskov, a research fellow at the National Institute for Strategic Studies under Volodymyr Zelensky, said today: ‘Ukraine is the biggest failure in [Putin’s] career, when he wanted his biggest achievement to be a new Russian empire.’

Mr Bielieskov added that with the continued support of Western allies, it is conceivable that Ukraine may be able to drive Kremlin troops out of occupied territories as early as the second or third quarter of this year.

  • £95,000 spent by church-charity to travel abroad and gym memberships

£95,000 spent by church-charity to travel abroad and gym memberships

It has been discovered that a church spent £95,000 in charitable funds on international travel and gym memberships.

As a report on its spending was published yesterday, Rhema Church in Croydon, south London, had its charitable status withdrawn.

The Charity Commission’s investigation discovered that “day-to-day living expenses” like food, household purchases, medical bills, vet bills, and gym memberships—all of which appeared to be of a personal nature—were claimed and paid out by the charity in the absence of any expense policy or distinct financial controls.”

Trips to locations such as Italy, Greece and Austria were led by former pastor Martin Phelps.

He has since been disqualified from being a trustee any part of senior management functions at any charity for 10 years.

The investigation also uncovered that Mr Phelps had used cheques totalling £300,000 to move money from the charity’s account to his personal one – to reduce monthly mortgage interest payments.

Some £225,000 was transferred back to the charity, but no safety measures were put in place which left the funds at considerable risk.

    Latest London news

Most of the organisation’s spending was incorrectly categorised and lacked sufficient information to prove it was for charitable purposes.

This resulted in it being liable to pay £543,285.82 in additional taxes.

The Commission concluded that the charity’s trustees had ‘failed to fulfil their duties to protect the charity and its assets, and failed to demonstrate any effective oversight of senior staff leading to the serious misconduct and/or mismanagement, including misuse of funds and other assets.’

Rhema Church London was removed from the register of charities on June 7 last year.

Head of investigations Amy Spiller said: ‘Trustees must use their charity’s funds to further the charity’s purposes and ensure there are robust financial controls in place to stop the abuse of these funds.

‘The interim managers worked at length to settle the charity’s accounts and I am pleased they were able to recover over £136,000 which could be put to good use at charities with similar purposes.’

  • ICGC donates Mental Health Authority with GHS200,000

ICGC donates Mental Health Authority with GHS200,000

As part of its yearly support for the authority, the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) has given GH200,000 to the Mental Health Authority.

As part of its commitment to help improve conditions in the nation’s psychiatric hospitals and raise awareness to ensure the appropriate management of cases, the church has funded the Mental Health Authority for five years running.

After the church organized a 12-meter health walk, Rev Anthony Cudjoe, the ICGC’s regional overseer for Accra South, made the presentation on behalf of the general overseer, Pastor Mensa Otabil.

The ICGC’s annual health and fitness event encourages healthy lifestyles and serves as a platform to impact society as well as raise funds in support of the Ghana Mental Health Authority.

Rev Cudjoe said ICGC’s support for mental health was anchored on the understanding that it was an aspect of Ghana’s healthcare system that was underserved and needed to be resources.

    Life Walk

He said Life Walk was more than a fitness and wellness event but an evangelistic and charity event and reminded the gathering of how Jesus Christ went everywhere doing good.

“Our mandate, and the third strand of our mission, is to influence society positively with the impact of the gospel,” he said.

    Increased Demand

Receiving the cheque, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Dr. Caroline Amissah, commended the ICGC for its continuous support to the institution to bring attention and awareness to mental health issues.

She said unlike previously when mental health was given little attention, things had changed with the issues now placed in the spotlight resulting in a reduction in stigma.

Dr. Caroline Amissah noted that the collaboration with ICGC and other partners had led to an increased demand for mental healthcare with more people now reaching out freely for support when they had issues.

    Emulate
She called on other institutions to emulate the gesture by ICGC to complement the efforts of the state to ensure that people receive care and attention.

This year’s walk began at the Christ Temple East Campus of the ICGC in Teshie.

Participants included senior officials of the church such as Pastor Otabil, his wife, Lady Joy; General Secretary of the church, Rev. Morris Appiah; the Regional Overseer for Accra North, Rev. Yaw Annor and various district heads.

The 12-kilometre walk took thousands of participants through some major streets in the Teshie enclave including Tse Addo and the Military Cemetery.

Officials of the Mental Health Authority, keep-fit lovers and members of the general public also joined the well-organized walk amidst brass-band music and singing by various cheer groups.

Homeless pregnant woman worried about leaving her child on the streets

A pregnant mother is afraid she will have to live on the streets with her toddler son after the local government ordered her to vacate their temporary residence.

A week before she is scheduled to be induced with the birth of her second child, Stacey Davies, 36, received notice to vacate the Birmingham apartment.

Ms. Davies, who struggles with her mobility and mental health, declined to transfer to another house since it was in a “disgusting” state and had just a bunk bed for sleeping arrangements.
Also, she turned down the house since it was too far from her support system and she would find it difficult to ascend the stairs.

The single mum says she was sent an email yesterday giving her 35 days to leave the two-bedroom flat upstairs in a converted house, where she says she had no central heating for three months.

She is due to be induced with her second child next Friday and fears that she will be left on the streets with her newborn and 15-month-old son.

Ms Davies said: ‘This will leave me, my child and my newborn out on the streets because of the fact I won’t accept a property that’s not in a suitable state to move my children into. I am stressed out and desperate. The council have left me in a dire situation.’

Ms Davies, who is registered disabled and is on medication for her mental health issues, has been in the accommodation, in Edgbaston, since December last year. She asked the council for a review of the housing as she struggles to get up the three flights of stairs with her pram and has deep vein thrombosis which causes her legs to swell up.

The homeless mum also says there was a fault with the boiler at her current address which took three months to fix.

‘The boiler was broken and it affected me and my son very badly, we had no heating even when it was snowing,’ she said.

‘My child has been to the hospital three times because he’s been sick with a chest infection because the house is so draughty.

‘I’ve also been to hospital several times and we’ve had to ring up the doctors with terrible colds. We couldn’t even move out of the bedroom because it was that cold.’

The boiler was fixed this week and she was offered another property four miles away in Weoley Castle but rejected it after a viewing.

Ms Davies said: ‘There was only one bedroom and no carpet, it was disgusting, the place was a disgrace. I don’t know how they expected a 15-month-old to sleep in the top or even the bottom of a bunk bed.

‘I’m 36 weeks pregnant and due to be induced next Friday, I would have been isolated in the middle of nowhere where I’d have no support for my mental health or anything else.

‘After I refused that property they’ve taken my housing status off me and they say they are coming out today to terminate my tenancy.’

The mum has been given a Notice to Quit by Birmingham City Council which states that the local authority has ‘discharged its duty’ to provide accommodation under the Homeless Act 1996.

She is now living with boxes of possession piled high as she packed in anticipation of a move before the viewing.

Her granddad, Malcom Davies, from Dudley, said: ‘Her situation is dire, they keep trying to put her in places that are not suitable for her.

‘Neither the place she is living in now or the one she has been offered with a bunk bed and stairs is suitable for a mum with a small child and a baby on the way. They have messed her about for years.’

More than 4,000 families were living in temporary accommodation across the city as of January this year, according to a report by BirminghamLive.

A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council said: ‘We understand Ms Davies had concerns about her temporary accommodation and worked hard to ensure appropriate accommodation was found, however the alternative accommodation offered was refused.

‘She is of course entitled to a review and this process is currently underway.

‘Unfortunately due to the number of people needing emergency housing we have to use a range of temporary accommodation.

‘We try to minimize the disruption to households but recognise that at times the only available options are outside of a household’s local community.

‘We would urge anybody who thinks they are at risk of being homeless to get in touch with us as soon as possible so our Housing Solutions Officers can work with them to prevent homelessness wherever possible.’

  • North Korea allegedly kills pregnant women and used girls with dwarfism in experiments

North Korea allegedly kills pregnant women and used girls with dwarfism in experiments

A South Korean investigation claims that North Korea murdered a six-month pregnant woman and used people with dwarfism in human tests.

According to the article, persons have been executed for being homosexual and for practicing their faith, and the state has even forcefully sterilized disabled people.

In a lengthy 450-page report that was yesterday made public by the South Korean Ministry of Unification, more than 500 North Koreans who were able to emigrate described the horrifying human rights abuses that occurred between 2017 and 2022.

‘North Korean citizens’ right to life appears to be greatly threatened,’ the ministry said in the report.

‘Executions are widely carried out for acts that do not justify the death penalty, including drug crimes, distribution of South Korean videos, and religious and superstitious activities.’

They also heard testimony of nurses being forced to write up a list people with dwarfism so hysterectomies can be carried out, MailOnline reports.

A six-month pregnant woman was said to have been put to death after a video of her dancing whilst pointing to a portrait of Kim Jong-Un whilst dancing.

And a group of teenagers were allegedly executed by firing squad after they watched a video from South Korea and smoked opium.

The report also details North Korea’s ministry of Social Security blackmailed families into letting their relatives take part in human experiments – with the threat of sending them to prison camps.

Detention facilities saw frequent death and torture.

Female prisoners were also treated particularly harshly as they were were subject to sexual violence and forced labour.

Five out of the 11 camps identified by South Korea are still in operation.

The report came as South Korea seeks to highlight its isolated neighbour’s failure to improve living conditions while racing to boost its nuclear and missile arsenals.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said the report should better inform the international community of the North’s ‘gruesome’ abuses, saying North Korea deserved ‘not a single penny’ of economic aid while it pursues its nuclear ambitions.

The Unification Ministry is required by law to make an annual assessment of the North’s rights situation.

  • A 3-year-old child and six other migrants discovered dead at the US-Canada border

A 3-year-old child and six other migrants discovered dead at the US-Canada border

As per officials, six members of two families seeking to enter the US were found dead along the US-Canada border.

On Thursday, the six bodies were found in the St. Lawrence River close to Tsi Snaihne Akwesasne, Quebec.
A Mohawk Nation area called Akwesasne can be found in both Quebec and New York state.

According to an Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service spokeswoman, the six dead belonged to two families of migrants who were trying to enter the US.

The first body was pulled out of a marsh area along the St Lawrence River around 5.00pm on Thursday, police said.

‘The six individuals are believed to be from two families, one of Romanian descent and the other believed to be citizens of India,’ Akwesasne Police Deputy Chief Lee-Ann O’Brien said at a press conference on Friday.

The victims have not yet been identified, but O’Brien confirmed that one was a 3-year-old child from the Romanian family.

Investigators are still searching for another child, an infant from the same Romanian family, who they believe was also with the party trying to cross the St Lawrence.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police said that additional personnel from dive teams, fire departments, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are aiding the search for the missing infant, and looking for any other possible victims.

Authorities said both children had Canadian passports, which were recovered with the bodies.

Their cause of death will be determined after post-mortem exams and toxicology reports are performed. Police are currently working with Immigration Canada to identify the victims and notify their next-of-kin.

Just days earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Joe Biden reached an agreement to close Roxham Road, a border crossing between Quebec and New York.

The closure followed a record number of asylum seekers entering Canada through ‘unofficial’ entry points.

However, authorities said the deaths discovered on Tuesday were unrelated to the Roxham Road closure, which is located about 66 miles east of Akwesasne.

‘Right now what I can tell you is this has nothing to do with that closure,’ Deputy Chief O’Brien said. ‘These people were believed to be gaining entry into the U.S. It’s completely opposite.’

Ahuofe wasn’t poisoned – Manager debunk rumors

Earlier yesterday, scores of Ghanaians who are very active on social media received news of the death of viral internet sensation Ahoufe with shock.

According to reports, the Tik Toker died after battling just hours after going live on Tiktok on 29th March 2023.

Amidst his mourning, an award-winning Ghanaian blogger known as ‘Gentle The Blogger’ has wildly alleged that Ahoufe was poisoned.

According to ‘Gentle The Blogger’, he got the information from his manager who is his best friend.

It is still unclear who may have been behind the poisoning or the motive behind the act.

But it’s suspected that the evil act was conducted by the people around him who are jealous of his success and the fame he acquired within a twinkling.

However, Ahuofe’s manager has come out to vehemently dismiss the reports that the Tiktok star was poisoned.

According to him, Ahoufe also known as Soldier got sick and was living in the same room with him for some time now, therefore, he died from sickness and not anything poison-related.

The manager added that he took Ahoufe to the hospital himself the night before his shocking demise.

But unfortunately, he died in his arms in the hospital upon arrival and none of the doctors at the hospital made mention of poison or whatsoever.

  • Donald Trump “will present himself in court on Tuesday and may be subject to a perp walk”

Donald Trump “will present himself in court on Tuesday and may be subject to a perp walk”

Former President Donald Trump intends to present himself for arraignment in the hush money case on Tuesday and might be allowed to go free.

Tuesday is when the accusations against Trump are scheduled to be made public, and it seems likely that he will be arraigned then.

Trump’s attorney stated that his client will not accept a plea bargain and is instead ready to go to trial.

The ex-president’s lawyer Joe Tacopina on Friday said that ‘Trump is not going to hole up in Mar-a-Lago’. He did not rule out a perp walk or mugshot.

‘As far as mugshots, (perk) walk – I’m sure they’ll try to get every ounce of publicity he can from this thing,’ Tacopina told ABC News’ Good Morning America.

He added that ‘the president will not be put in handcuffs’.

A Manhattan grand jury on Thursday voted to indict Trump for his role in a $130,000 payment his former lawyer Michael Cohen made to silence porn star Stormy Daniels on her alleged affair with Trump.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office on Thursday night stated that they had contacted Trump’s lawyer ‘to coordinate his surrender’.

Trump on Friday morning slammed the judge assigned to his case, Justice Juan Merchan.

‘The Judge “assigned” to my Witch Hunt Case, a “Case” that has NEVER BEEN CHARGED BEFORE, HATES Me,’ wrote Trump on his Truth Social platform.

Trump claimed without evidence that Merchan was ‘hand picked by Bragg & the Prosecutors’. Merchan also presided over the trial of longtime Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, and Trump claimed that Merchan ‘railroaded’ him into taking a plea.
