  • You can’t lecture us on lawmaking lessons in our country – Sam George to Kamala over LGBTQ+ bill

You can’t lecture us on lawmaking lessons in our country – Sam George to Kamala over LGBTQ+ bill

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Constituency in the Greater Accra region, Sam Nartey George has lambasted the Vice president of the United States of America, Kamala Harris over her comment on the the issue of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ+) activities in Ghana.

According to Sam George, the vice president, who is currently in Ghana on a mission to strengthen ties between Ghana and the United States, is unqualified to lecture Ghanaians on human rights issues because human rights violations are common in her home country.

He proceeded by suggesting that Americans should understand the legislative process in order to address such a difficult problem because human rights issues are prevalent in the US.

Speaking in an interview with Citi FM on March 28, 2023, Sam George added that the American people should visit Ghana and learn a few things about the lawmaking process from our parliament because they are willing to assist them.

“For the president to run away from his own government’s position on the Bill is unbelievable and worrying but let me assure you that we are not going to be cowed by the undemocratic comments of the American Vice President.

“The American people should be coming to Ghana to learn a few things from our Parliament when it comes to issues of lawmaking because we will be in a good position to help them,” he stressed.

He voiced unhappiness with President Akufo-Addo for his recent remarks regarding the LGBTQI+ bill when he spoke with Kamala Harris at a joint press conference.

President Akufo-Addo is quoted to have said that the anti-LGBT bill, which was championed by “only a hand full of MPs”, is currently being considered by Parliament.

Akufo-Addo added that even if the bill is passed, it will still have to be ratified by him.

It may be recalled that Kamala Harris spoke on the issue of LGBTQ+ activities while responding to a question at Jubilee House, in Accra, on Monday, March 27, Kamala Harris said that for her, the LGBTQ+ issue was one that bordered on human rights.

She added that every person has the right to live as he/she wants.

“Let me be clear about where we stand. First of all, for the American press who are here, you know that a great deal of work in my career has been to address human rights issues and equality issues across the board including those related to the LGBT community.

“And I feel very strongly about the importance of supporting freedom and supporting and fighting for equality among all people and that all people be treated equally.

“I will also say that this is an issue that we consider and I consider to be a human rights issue and that will not change,” she stressed.

Some MPs welcome Adwoa Safo after missing out on the ministerial vote

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo was welcomed back to parliament with open arms by her colleague female MPs from both sides of the House following her absence from the chamber last week.

On yet another occasion, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker missed sitting in parliament when the majority caucus required her presence for a vote.

On Friday, March 24, 2023, the House conducted a crucial vote on the approval of some six ministers nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The equality in numbers on both the majority and minority sides of the house meant that every single vote was key in securing the badly needed approval of the nominees.

This was more important especially when the minority had served a clear notice of adhering to a directive from its party, the National Democratic Congress to reject the nominees.

Adwoa Safo, who had been absent during previous votings, failed to attend the sitting on Friday.

She, however, returned to the chamber on Monday, March 29, 2023, when the house reconvened.

In a video shared by Oyerepa TV and sighted by GhanaWeb, the MP beaming with smiles was seen being welcomed back to the House by other female MPs from both the majority and minority.

Her colleagues took turns to share a hug with the Dome Kwabenya MP amidst the exchange of pleasantries.

Ahead of the vote on Friday, some NPP members had expressed concerns about the truancy of Adwoa Safo when it comes to critical issues that required her presence.

Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, Jennifer Queen likened Adwo Safo to an overpampered village girl.

“One our villages there are small some small girls who grow up to be stubborn and will not listen to anyone. When you ask her to go and bathe, she will not budge. With some twisted hair on her head, she won’t listen to anything and will grow up with such an attitude,” she bemoaned during an interview on Okay FM.

Kamala Harris’ husband spotted playing basketball at Bukom

USA’s second gentleman, Douglas Emhoff, appears to be having a good time in Ghana as he joined some young female basketball players to take a hobby.

He played basketball with girls from some Ghanaian basketball academies at a basketball clinic held at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The basketball clinic, the first-ever all-girls’ NBA clinic, forms part of the Jnr. NBA’s project aimed at supporting the development and growth of the sport. But it’s organisation was a joint effort of the NBA and US State Department and coincided by a state visit of the USA’s vice president Kamala Harris, and second gentleman, Emhoff.

USA’s second gentleman plays basketball at Bukom

An estimated 50+ girls were present at the Jnr. NBA clinic, which had NBA Africa Academy coach, Elri Liebenberg, calling drills for girls aged between 12 and 18.

Emhoff, before taking part in a team-shooting contest (one his side won after being first to make 5 shots within the paint) and trying out some bouncing drills, described the all-girls clinic as an important step.

“I went to LA when I was a teenager, which means I am a huge Lakers fan and this is a special day. It is historic what we are doing today – the first NBA all-girls clinic [and] it’s happening right here in Ghana and you’re all here to be able to participate in it,” Emhoff indicated.

WNBA legend and 2003 champion, Atsou Ndiaye was also present at the clinic and had a session with the girls, before recounting her personal story of how basketball changed her life.

“I wasn’t supposed to play [basketball], I was too masculine, I was supposed to be at home cooking and couldn’t do both [but] I ended up doing both and at the highest level. So I’m grateful to see young ladies like you get into basketball. There are no more excuses,” Ndiaye explained.

Basketball Africa League’s John Manyo-Plange, Frank Traore and NBA Africa’s CEO, Victor Williams, were also at the clinic.

  • Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill will be passed, there’s no way you can intervene – Bagbin tells Akufo-Addo

Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill will be passed, there’s no way you can intervene – Bagbin tells Akufo-Addo

Speaker Alban Bagbin has categorically stated that President Akufo-Addo cannot overturn the outcome of the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill should Parliament pass it.

Speaking during a meeting with some religious leaders, he said the President cannot interfere with the works of the House.

“This is a word to the President of the Republic, there is no way you can intervene,” he said.

The Speaker’s comment was in reaction to a claim by the President regarding the passage of the proposed anti-LGBTQ+ before Parliament.

President Akufo-Addo, during a joint press brief held on Monday, March 27, 2023, for himself and the Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris, at the Jubilee House, distanced himself from the Bill.

He clarified that his administration has no hand in the proposition of the Bill and further asserted that he would “come in” after the passage of the Bill.

“The Bill is going through the Parliament [and] the Attorney has found it necessary to speak to the committee about it regarding the constitutionality, otherwise, of several of its provisions and the Parliament is dealing with it.

“At the end of the process I will come in but in the meantime the Parliament is dealing with it. And then I have no doubt that the Parliament of Ghana will show as it’s done in the past, first of all its sensitivity to human rights issues as well as to the feelings of our population and we’ll come out with a responsible response to the proposed Bill,” the President added.

However, it appears this comment has triggered anger buttons of some personalities in the country, of which the Speaker is among.

In reaction, the Speaker called President’s bluff, insisting he (President Akufo-Addo) has no say after Parliament decides on the Bill.

“The Bill will be passed…That answer he gave that it’s now before Parliament and when it gets to a stage that he has to he will come in. Hey, please , this is Legislation, this is not Execution.

“Wait until we pass it and we direct you to execute it . That is when you come in, that’s why we are the representatives of the people. So in terms of Law which is part of policy, we finalise it and then the Executive now has the authority to implement it.

“Let’s get this clear, while this Bill is before here, he’s not in charge , I am in charge,” he added.

Ghana is a safe place – Michael Blackson to Americans

Ghanaian American actor, Michael Blackson, has emphasized the extent of peace and safety Ghana is blessed with.

In a discussion on Drink Champs with Nore, Blackson established that the peace, safety, and freedom experienced in Ghana is totally out of the world.

He made these statements while stating possible reasons that prompted Meek Mill’s act of shooting a music video inside the Jubilee House earlier this year.

Michael Blackson said Meek Mill, perhaps ‘overdosed’ on the warmth, freedom, peace, and safety in the country.

“He probably felt at home. He felt he was home and that he could probably do whatever he wanted.
Trust me, In Ghana, let me tell you something. You go out, you go to the club and come back home at night time. In America, you might not make it home at night time. Ghana is peaceful, nothing happens to you. You go out and you make it home at night. There is no violence, nobody gets killed. There’s no shoot out. Nothing!” he told the host.

Michael Blackson, who was made to give an account of what transpired at the Jubilee House when Meek Mill visited told his friends,

“In Africa, our White Houses are a little bit more different. I think he shot a music video in the Jubilee House. I wasn’t there but I think what happened was he went in there and took some pictures and videos and later on used it for a music video. I don’t know how it happened but Ghana is a very strict country. There are certain things you’re not allowed to capture in their White House.”

Archbishop Duncan-Williams resilience is commendable – Majid Michel

Actor Majid Michel has described Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams as the father of the land having “been through hell” yet remaining resilient.

In his view, the preacher’s resilience is commendable because it takes a strong man to be such resolute in the face of adversity.

“The archbishop has been through hell all his life. He’s still fighting,” Majid said on Joy Prime. “He’s the father of the land. The hot water, the fire, things he’s been through that he’s still going through, you can’t survive it. So, when he speaks, it comes with a lot of weight.”

Majid and the preacher have starred in a movie titled ‘Taste of Sin’ and is expected to be premiered soon. In his interview, the actor highlighted the role the archbishop played in the said movie.

Archbishop Duncan-Williams is the Founder and Presiding Archbishop of Action Chapel International (ACI), headquartered in Accra, Ghana. The preacher in an interview in 2017 on Starr FM detailed his story, including how he lost his fingers.

“Of all the battles in life, the spiritual battle is easily the most significant. It is always said that before anything of worth happens in the physical, it must be settled in the spiritual. It happened in the spiritual realm but sacrificed my fingers for it.”

“At age 20, something significant happened. I had nightmares, hallucination and heard voices at home; spiritual voices contending with the voice of truth, grace. I was captured by the spirit, instructed by it to light a candle and dip my hands into the burning flame.”

He continued; “I obeyed without question but with pain. My lips at a point were sealed until the pain had become unbearable. My fingers darkened in the flames until they turned into ashes. My shouts attracted siblings who came and rushed me to Korle Bu Hospital where I was admitted for months.”

‘Facebook rapist’ Thabo Bester escapes from prison after staging death

Thabo Bester, who targeted his victims by finding them on Facebook, was found “dead” last May after a burned body was left in his cell – but he was later spotted in shops and restaurants in an upmarket part of Cape Town.

rapist who targeted his victims on social media was seen sauntering through one of Cape Town’s most-upmarket suburbs after staging his own death and breaking out of prison.

Thabo Bester, who was branded the “Facebook rapist”, broke out after a charred body was found in his cell at a max-security prison run by G4S – a London-based security firm.

A few months after the brazen escape, Bester was seen in an area close to a £5million mansion he had been renting, which was down the road from the president’s home.

An investigation by news website GroundUp found that Bester did escape – and that he may have been helped by the prison’s own guards.

A post-mortem revealed that the body, which was burned beyond recognition, had been bludgeoned before it was set ablaze.

In emails sent from a prison official to the country’s deputy justice and correctional services minister, there were claims of officials helping him escape Mangaung Prison.

In a statement urging the public to help track down Bester, the department said jail guards have been sacked.

Bester was in prison after luring women to him by claiming that modeling scouts were interested in meeting them.

  • Beyonce Knowles and Adidas terminate their partnership

Beyonce Knowles and Adidas terminate their partnership

Adidas, the German multinational sportswear corporation, and Beyonce Knowles, a global music and entertainment icon, have mutually agreed to terminate their partnership due to creative differences between Adidas and Beyonce’s Ivy Park.

The end of Beyonce’s partnership with Adidas marks the conclusion of a productive collaboration that began in 2018, during which they worked together to revive the Ivy Park activewear line and develop new footwear and apparel for the brand.

However, the decision to end the partnership followed reports that Adidas suffered a loss of $10 million in 2022 as a result of its collaboration with Ivy Park.

In 2016, Beyonce launched Ivy Park as a 50-50 joint venture with Sir Philip Green, the proprietor of Topshop. Nevertheless, the partnership ceased in 2018, and Beyonce assumed complete ownership of Ivy Park, paving the way for her lucrative deal with Adidas.

In the past few years, Ivy Park has faced difficulties meeting its sales projections in the market. Although Adidas estimated $250 million in sales for Ivy Park in 2022, the brand only generated about $40 million in sales, a decrease from $93 million in the preceding year.

The recent decline in Ivy Park’s revenue was not only an unfavorable outcome for Adidas, which had set lofty revenue projections for the brand, but also a letdown for financial experts who had predicted that the collaboration would break new ground, surpassing all Adidas’ prior ventures in sales and popularity, and solidifying its position as a top activewear brand.

The unexpected decline in revenue is particularly baffling, given the immense popularity and influence of Beyonce, whose massive following and star power generated significant buzz around the Ivy Park and Adidas collaboration.

Despite this setback, both Ivy Park and Adidas expressed optimism about their potential for success, with plans to implement new marketing and promotional strategies.

In an effort to revive the activewear line and overcome the operational challenges of meeting sales targets, Adidas executives explored various marketing tactics inspired by the successful strategies used for Kanye West’s Yeezy brand. However, a difference of opinion arose between Adidas and Beyonce’s team regarding the optimal approach for promoting the brand.

This represents about 43 percent growth of the GH¢4,327,792.11 million recorded in 2022.

As of December 31, 2022, the financial standing of the Union was GH¢37,227,287.67 million as against a projected financial position of GH¢35,144,168.86 for the year.

Also, the net profit was about one million Ghana cedis against a projected surplus of about GH¢907,146.29.

The financial report of the WACCU, presented at its 2023 Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Wa, disclosed this at the weekend.

The report indicated that GH¢3,555,607.14 of the total revenue of the Union recorded in the year under review, was accrued from interest on loans; GH¢1,953,998.47 from interest on financial investments; interest on other investments was GH¢32,095.02 and non-financial-income-of GH¢629,001.13.

The AGM brought together 368 members of the Union across the region to deliberate on its status and effective management to ensure it yielded the needed results.

Mr John Kofi Seidu, the Board Chairman of the Union, underscored the importance of the AGM as it offered an opportunity for the board members, management, staff and the members to meet, interact and assess the financial performance.

They also discussed and approved a strategic and operating plan and budget from 2023 to 2027, with a projected total income of GH¢8,233,039.37 for 2023.

The financial position of the union was projected at GH¢42,727,262.68 for the 2023 financial year.

The strategic plan had also projected a total income of GH¢10,450,545.21 for 2024; GH¢12,774,242.67 for 2025; GH¢14,406,452.61 for 2026 and GH¢16,302,866.84 for 2027.

As part of the plan, the Board would commission a Social Impact Assessment this year to measure the level of service delivery toward achieving the Union’s vision and mission, which would subsequently be repeated every five years.

This would help the Union to re-focus its interventions, re-define its vision and mission, obtain donor support for some of its interventions, the report said.

Do not place LPG cylinders near naked fire – NPA cautions public

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has cautioned the public against placing Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders near naked fire or inflammable liquid.

The Authority said such acts could cause fire outbreaks which would result in loss of lives and property.

Speaking at an LPG awareness and sensitisation campaign at the main lorry station of the Tamale Central Business District on Thursday, March 23, 2023, the Consumer Services Manager of NPA, Eunice Budu Nyarko, explained that it was important for consumers of petroleum products such as LPG to be conscious of their safety.

The exercise was undertaken by the Corporate Affairs and Gas directorates of the NPA in collaboration with Lyme Haus.

The team had similar engagements with traders, market women, drivers, and students in Savelugu, Gushegu and Kumbungu, all in the Northern Region.

Notable places visited include the Gushegu Nursing and Midwifery Training College and the Light House Church, Savelugu.

The exercise began in the Upper East and North East regions.

The team sensitised the public on the mandate of the Authority, the responsibilities of consumers in hazards involved in the handling and usage of petroleum products and what constitutes best practices for operators of filling stations in the downstream petroleum industry, among others.

Mrs Nyarko underscored the need for users of petroleum products to adhere to all safety protocols because the flouting of laid down regulations has the potential of igniting fire outbreaks at home and at workplaces.

Some of the safety protocols, she said, included putting off the regulator when the cylinder is not in use, ensuring adequate ventilation for all cylinders and using the same regulators with that as the cylinder valve among others.

For his part, the Communications Manager of NPA, Mr Mohammed Abdul-Kudus, who welcomed the people on behalf of the NPA Chief Executive, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, said LPG was most convenient, safe and fast compared to charcoal and firewood.

Besides, he said, using LPG would save people from the health hazards associated with smoke and heat emanating from wood fuel.

In his submission, the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire and Rescue Service, ADOII Hudu Baba, stressed the need for users of LPG to observe the safety rules to prevent accidents and resultant injuries and loss of lives.

He particularly asked the people to ensure that regulators are well fitted, check for leakages in their hoses and avoid turning on gas regulators before lighting the match.

Why married women are looking for love elsewhere – Joro Olumofin

Popular Nigerian socialite, Joro Olumofin, has disclosed why some women, despite being married, are still on the streets seeking love elsewhere.

According to the self-styled relationship expert, most men are not caring enough for their wives.

He said some men make bad decisions including spending money on bottles at the bar or going on vacations with their side chicks.

Joro made it known that women find men who are stingy distasteful, adding that, women love it when their men spend on them.

He said if that factor is missing in relationships, women begin to hit the streets in search of men who would cater to their needs.

“Married women are on the streets and it’s serious. And the reason is that husbands are stingy and they don’t spend on their wives. A man makes money and the first thing that comes to his mind is to go to the club, pop bottles and travel with side chicks all over the world. Nothing pains a woman more than men who do not spend money on them but spends it on other things.”

  • It’s expensive and suffocating to do business in Ghana- GUTA

It’s expensive and suffocating to do business in Ghana- GUTA

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has called on the Members of the House of Legislature to as a matter of urgency carefully and properly analyse the issue of taxes before imposing any more on the business community, in order to save the country from crisis.

This comes on the back of three revenue mobilisation bills that have been laid before the House.

In a statement issued on Monday, 27 March 2023, and signed by its President Dr Joseph Obeng, GUTA noted that government in “2017, realising the importance of lessening tax burden on businesses, removed what was deemed to be nuisance taxes.

“As of now, these nuisance taxes are creeping back in various forms and folds seriously suffocating businesses in the country to death.”

According to GUTA, the “Business Community in the country has done its best in terms of tax payment. Against all odds and challenges in 2022, the government was able to exceed its revenue target.

“Therefore, if the government wants to increase its revenue base, the best way is to adopt innovative means to capture those businesses outside the tax net, review policies on tax exemptions, warehousing, free zones etc. to curtail the abuses, as well as prune down expenditure.”

It continued: “Whiles businesses are being overburdened with numerous taxes, high fees, and charges, the interest rate also continues to rise astronomically.

“As the inflation rate reduces, we expected that the monetary policy rate too will come down, but unfortunately, that is not the case.”

“Our worst fear is that, if care is not taken to reduce the unbearable tax burden on businesses, it will collapse businesses, increase poverty, and create insecurity in the country,” the association indicated.

It further indicated that: “Currently, doing business in Ghana is extremely costly and suffocating.”

The association added: “This makes us irrelevant in the scheme of affairs in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), as well as cross-border trade within our sub-regional bloc.”

Sista Afia describes Medikal as a greedy rapper

Ghanaian songstress, Sista Afia, has talked about claims that Medikal wrote a rap for her.

During her beef with Eno Barony and Freda Rhymz, it was alleged that the AMG rapper was her ghostwriter.

The ‘Jeje’ singer once again denied this allegation when speaking with MzGee on UTV’s United Showbiz.

Afia stated that Medikal never wrote a song for her adding that he never assists her when they meet in the studio.

Sista Afia also described Medikal as a greedy rapper.

She opened up that the popular rapper respects her craft and thinks she can do well on her own.

She elucidated that he doesn’t like to share his rapper.

  • Anti-LGBTQ Bill: Attorney-General’s intervention has led to some modifications – Akufo-Addo

Anti-LGBTQ Bill: Attorney-General’s intervention has led to some modifications – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has indicated that the substantial elements of the Anti-LGBTQI bill, which is currently before Parliament, have been modified.

He explained that the modification was done upon the intervention of the Attorney-General, adding that the final outcome is yet to be determined.

The President said this during a joint press briefing with US Vice President, Kamala Harris at the Jubilee House on Monday.

“My understanding with the recent discussion I had with the chairman of the committee is that, substantial elements of the bill have already been modified,” he stated while responding to a question from a New York Times journalist.

President Akufo-Addo also dismissed claims that there is already a legislation governing the activities of the LGBQI+ fraternity in the country.

Clarifying the matter, he noted that the Anti-LGBTQI bill has not been passed yet.

“The statement that there is legislation to that effect is not accurate,” he emphasised.

According to him, he has no doubt that Parliament will consider the sensitivity of the human rights aspect.

“The legislation is a legislation that is being proposed as a Private Members Bill. This is not an official legislation of the government but it is one that is being mooted by a handful of private members,” President Akufo-Addo clarified.

It would be recalled that on July 2021, eight members of Parliament introduced the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, popularly known as the Anti-LGBTQ bill.

The bill seeks to criminalise Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) activities in the country.

However, International organizations have raised concerns that the Bill could infringe on the rights of LGBTQ+ persons who are a minority group in the country.

Although the bill is at the consideration stage in Parliament, the Attorney-General says portions are unconstitutional.

Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame explained that some of the “provisions will violate some fundamental human rights and freedoms, particularly the right to privacy.

This is contained in a response to a request for memoranda on the position of government by the Chairman of the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs of Parliament dated October 19, 2022.

According to Godfred Yeboah Dame, the Anti-LGBTQI bill, in its current form, will therefore face some fundamental challenges during its implementation.

  • Ghana sets the bar for women in foreign policy and diplomacy- Research

Ghana sets the bar for women in foreign policy and diplomacy- Research

In a briefing session held to mark International Women’s Day 2023, researchers from the Institute of International Affairs in Ghana, Miss Elizabeth Dela Tsidi and Mr Charles Ansre, commended Ghana for its continued efforts to promote female leadership in diplomacy and foreign policy within the Economic Community for West Africa States (ECOWAS).

The researchers highlighted how Ghana had led the sub-region in assuring women of opportunities in leadership, with many female Ghanaian diplomats taking on roles of diplomacy and development that positively position the country in the world of foreign policy.

The report mentioned notable women, including Hannah Tetteh, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Martha Pobee, Anita Kiki Gbeho, Dr. Victoria Kwakwa, and Gertrude Oforiwaa Fefoame, who are delivering impact at senior levels with the IMF, World Bank, and the UN.

Ms Tsidi said, “The most obvious example of course is the fact that over the last 10 years, women have led the diplomatic and foreign affairs efforts of the government of Ghana. This began with Hon. Hannah Serwaa Tetteh and has continued with Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, and both women have excelled in their roles. For instance, under Hon. Botchwey as Foreign Affairs Minister, Ghana successfully negotiated the siting of the AFCFTA headquarters in Accra. It is also during her tenure that Ghana is serving on the UN Security Council as a non-permanent representative. Our record compares favourably in other developed countries including Australia, which has also had women at the helm of the foreign ministers since 2015.”

However, the researchers also noted that women continue to be underrepresented in ambassadorial positions globally.

The Institute however bemoaned that women continue to be underrepresented in ambassadorial positions around the world. Mr. Charles Ansre, a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute indicated that according to sources including the Diplomatic Academy, the percentage of women ambassadors from the 40 largest economies in the world and the European Union for the year 2022 was 21.6 %. In 2023, the proportion of women ambassadors and permanent representatives of the 193 United Nations (UN) member states as of February 31, was 20.54%. The average proportion of women ambassadors and permanent representatives was reported as 18% for the African Continent. Ghana leads the African continent with 49.5% of Her ambassadors being women, followed by South Africa with 39%. Globally, Ghana is ranked 4th in the percentage of women ambassadors in 2023.”

Mr. Ansre said the recognition and celebration of female achievement in diplomacy and foreign policy provides a role-modelling effect for young ladies in Ghana and Africa.

He noted, “This is very important and the Institute is committed to highlighting success stories here, in line with its agenda of using role-modelling as an advocacy tool to get more and more ladies interested and applying to global careers.”

The Institute plans to release the full report and statistics during its Women-in-Diplomacy Day commemorations on June 24, 2023.

  • Government puts an end to the Tory uprising over the Illegal Immigration Bill

Government puts an end to the Tory uprising over the Illegal Immigration Bill

A smoldering uprising among Tory MPs in opposition to the government’s bill on illegal immigration appears to have been put down for the time being.

Before a significant debate on the contentious legislation, which attempts to ban migrants from crossing the English Channel in small boats, Home Secretary Suella Braverman is rumored to have had conversations with her parliamentary colleagues.

Liberal and right-wing Conservatives have expressed reservations about the law, and some had signed amendments.

In its current form, the legislation would mean asylum seekers arriving through unauthorised channels are detained without bail or judicial review for 28 days.

They would then be ‘swiftly removed’ to their home country or a ‘safe third country’ such as Rwanda.

While some of the party’s MPs believe more efforts should be made to ensure removals are not blocked by the European Court of Human Rights, others want safe routes to be established for asylum seekers.

Reaction to the proposals has also been furious outside parliament, with both Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Ms Braverman being heckled earlier today.

As the pair walked around Essex, a woman shouted ‘allow migrants into our country’, before adding: ‘Go away, we don’t want you here.’

Ahead of the bill coming back to the House of Commons for its committee stage today, Mr Sunak was bracing for the possibility of the biggest Conservative rebellion of his premiership so far.

But this morning, policing minister Chris Philp said: ‘My understanding is that the various amendments to strengthen the bill aren’t going to be pushed to a vote today or tomorrow.

‘They are being discussed between those people who proposed the amendments and the government, and the home secretary in particular.

‘I know the home secretary is keen to make sure this bill is effective.’

Among the would-be rebels was Danny Kruger, who had said he wanted provisions in the bill to ‘operate notwithstanding any orders of the Strasbourg court or any other international body’.

Last year, the European Court of Human Rights – based in Strasbourg – granted an injunction that effectively grounded a flight sending asylum seekers from the UK to Rwanda.

Mr Kruger joined his Tory MP colleagues Simon Clarke and Jonathan Gullis in putting forward amendments that they said would be ‘necessary for the bill to function’.

Figures within the party have denied reports that the home secretary is secretly backing the right-wing rebellion in order to pressure the prime minister to toughen up the legislation.

Tim Loughton, who is among the leaders of the parliamentary movement, told BBC Radio 4’s World at One programme: ‘I have absolutely no evidence of that.

‘And whatever you want to call the Home Secretary, she’s certainly nobody’s puppet.’

On his visit to Essex, Mr Sunak said: ‘The home secretary and I have worked incredibly closely for the last two months to get the legislation exactly right.’

Deputy Lands Minister assures quarry operators of the government’s support

The Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources in Charge of Mines George Mireku Duker, on Monday, March 27, 2023, paid a working visit to some quarry sites in the Shai Osudoku Municipality in Greater Accra Region.

The visit by the Deputy Minister and officials from the Ministry was to apprise himself with the challenges in the quarry industry and how government can help tackle those challenges.

A key feature of the visit was a forum organized for Hon. Mireku Duker engaged the members of the quarry industry for them and to enable them voice out their concerns.

It came to light during the open forum that encroachment and pricing are two of the most teething challenges impeding the players in the quarry industry.

Symptomatic of good leaders, Hon. Mireku Duker after listening to the concerns of the operators proffered solutions where necessary and offered wise counsel where he deemed fit.

With the specific issue of encroachment, Hon. Mireku Duker charged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the country to make the protection of quarry sites a priority.

He maintained with their significant contribution to the National economy, the quarry industry needs to be give maximum protection from activities of encroachers.

The Deputy Minister said the quarry industry also provides raw materials for infrastructure activities in the country and therefore deserve some protection.

The MCE of the Shai Osudoku Municipality, Fred Offei Twum outlined some challenges facing the area, key among which is the poor road network. He bemoaned that despite major roads in the municipality being given to contractors, progress of work has been extremely slow and appealed to Hon. Duker to use his office to lobby on behalf of the area.

He also appealed to Hon. Duker to use his influence to ensure the quick activation of the Quarry Development Fund for Shai Osudoko. He noted with confidence that the arrival of the fund will spur infrastructure development in the area.

Addressing the concerns of the MCE, Hon Duker promised to work on the Quarry Development Fund to ensure the Municipality get funds to fuel projects.

Osman Bukari’s goal gives Ghana a point at Angola in the AFCON 2023 qualifying round

The Black Stars secured a crucial draw in Luanda to move closer to qualifying for the AFCON. Osman Bukari‘s immediate impact denied Angola all three points.

After connecting on a cross from fellow substitute Joseph Painstil, the Red Star Belgrade attacker took less than a minute to make his presence known by overturning Lucas Joao’s penalty for Angola.

Angola got off to a strong start, with Fredy’s long-range shot challenging Lawrence Ati Zigi in goal for Ghana.

With Helder Costa, Gelson, and Lucas Joao troubling the Black Stars defense, the hosts were able to contain Ghana for the majority of the early exchanges.

Halfway through the first half, Ghana came close after a swift interplay between Mohammed Kudus and Edmund Addo left the latter with the change of opening the scoring, but his effort went wide.

Angola threatened few minutes before the break, after Costa broke off from the right only for his strike to go wide.

Three minutes after the break, Angola were awarded a penalty after Daniel Amartey fouled Gelson inside the box. Lucas Joao made no mistake after sending Ati Zigi the wrong way to open the scoring.

Few minutes later, Chris Hughton replaced Kamaldeen Sulemana and Antoine Semenyo with Joseph Painstil and Inaki Williams.

Angola nearly doubled their lead through Ary Papel after taking on Kingsley Schindler before his strike was blocked by Amartey.

Osman Bukari and Majeed Ashimeru then replaced Mohammed Kudus and Edmund Addo, and just second seconds of his introduction, the Red Star Belgrade man finished off a brilliant move after meeting a cross from Joseph Paintsil.

Paintsil came close to giving Ghana the lead after his effort hit the cross bar moments later.

With three minutes remaining, Williams came close after meeting a cross from Abdul Samed Salis before Painstil was sent through by Ashimeru but brilliant defending from Carneiro saved Angola.

The Black Stars will host the Central African Republic and face Madagascar away in their final two matches in Group E.

  • Diluting 10 different honey brands in the UK with inexpensive sugar syrup

Diluting 10 different honey brands in the UK with inexpensive sugar syrup

According to a recent study, at least 10 different types of honey shipped from the UK contain “illegal, inexpensive additives.”

A random sample of imported honey samples was chosen for a research by the European Commission that was conducted across the continent to determine their purity.

Tests on ten UK brands revealed that all had been diluted with sugar syrup.

The source withheld the brand names, however it is probable that all are available in UK stores.

The brand names were not revealed in the report, but it is likely all are on sale in UK shops.

The EU Honey Directive requires ‘honey shall not have added to it any food ingredient, including food additives, nor shall any other additions be made other than honey’.

The UK Government will now investigate the research, reports MailOnline.

The study found that overall 46% of honey products tested across the EU had sugar added.

10 honey brands exported from the UK were found to contain added sugar
The European-wide study randomly sampled 320 honey consignments imported into 20 countries (Picture: Getty Images)

The commission said the UK brands were the ‘likely the result of honey produced in other countries and further blended in the UK’.

The highest number of contaminated honeys came from the UK’s largest supplier, China. But the highest proportion showings signs of sugar added were from Turkey at 93%.

Sixteen EU countries, plus Switzerland and Norway, took part in the testing campaign. A total of 320 honey consignments – imported from 20 countries – were randomly sampled between November 2021 and February 2022.

Samples of these shipments were then sent for analysis, which identified that 147 samples (46%) were thought to be adulterated and therefore non-compliant with the general provision of the EU Honey Directive.

The British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) said it’s important firms label their honey with its country of origin to enable ‘consumers to choose honey from sources where adulteration is less likely’.

Diane Drinkwater, chair of the BBKA, said: ‘To meet demand, around 90% of the honey we eat in the UK is imported. There is legitimate concern among UK beekeepers and honey producers about honey imports from countries where honey may be adulterated on an industrial scale.

‘BBKA are keen for the public to be given accurate information about where their honey comes from. BBKA would like all countries where the honey originated from to be listed on the label.

‘The general public knows where our broccoli and cabbage comes from, often down to the county, so why shouldn’t they know where the supermarket honey comes from?’

Currently the country of origin on honey labels can be replaced, if the honey originates from multiple countries, with ‘blend of EU/non-EU honeys’.

Ms Drinkwater continued: ‘We believe this is insufficient to allow consumers to make an informed choice. All countries where the honey originated should be listed.’

The organisation launched a petition just under six months ago calling the government to make it mandatory for the honey’s origin to be included on the label. It has more than 12,000 signatures so far and closes on April 13.

The Government responded to the petition on January 31 with: ‘The Government takes food fraud seriously and is working to ensure honey meets our high standards. Country of origin labelling is not a suitable means for determining if a food is subject to fraud.’

In 2013 the UK and other parts of Europe were rocked by the horse meat scandal.

A number of products on the market were found to contain horsemeat despite not being declared on the label. It sparked outcry and numerous products were taken off the shelves.

Following the theft of a shopping cart filled with toys worth £1,000 from a store, four ladies are sought for questioning.

Once the toys were reported taken from a Tesco store in Workshop, Nottinghamshire, CCTV photographs of the women were made public.

The suspects entered the store in Gateford Road and each loaded a trolley with merchandise.

  • I do not know if Al-Qaeda is in Ghana – Akufo-Addo

I do not know if Al-Qaeda is in Ghana – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has rejected claims that Ghana is hosting some members of Al-Qaeda in the country.

He made the statement during a joint press conference held at the Jubilee House, where he received the Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris.

During the press conference, the President was asked about the state of Ghana’s terrorist watch and the potential consequences of terror threats to US security aid.

The questions were prompted by the proliferation of terrorist groups across the West African region and the increasing activity of pirate groups along the West African coast.

Although Ghana is yet to witness a terrorist attack, neighbouring countries in recent years have suffered some attacks.

Terrorist groups associated with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Islamic State of Libya and Islamic State West Africa (ISWA) according to sources have significant presence in the region.

These groups have demonstrated capability and intent by mounting attacks against security forces and civilians in several countries, most recently in Burkina Faso and Mali.

While there have been no recent attacks in Ghana, the government has instituted some measures including beefing up security at the country’s borders and also launching the “See something, say something” campaign aimed at heightening sensitisation on terrorism, to forestall such attacks.

The journalist wanted to know what the country needed from the United States to combat the threat of Wagner Groups invading the African Continent.

Additionally, he asked for confirmation on whether Ghana was hosting any members of the Al-Qaeda group.

In response the President said he could not confirm if something of that sort existed in the country.

“The presence of Al Qaeda in Ghana, I don’t know. Formally, we don’t have any information to that effect. There are cells , etc already in the country but those are matters our security agencies are very much on top of and we are hoping that there will be no Al-Qaeda presence in Ghana.

“And that has to be the wish of anybody who is the friend of this country and those who wish the people of Ghana well,” added.

  •  The cost of sending money to Sub-Saharan Africa must be reduced- World Remit

The cost of sending money to Sub-Saharan Africa must be reduced- World Remit

    • Remittances from the African diaspora are crucial in supporting household expenses in many developing countries, but the high cost of sending money remains a significant hindrance to inflows.
    • Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most affected by the global crisis, but remittance inflows to countries like Nigeria and Kenya have been strong.
    • Global payment companies like WorldRemit have lowered transfer costs to busy corridors in Africa, making it more affordable to send money.

Notwithstanding household inflationary pressures, the World Bank and industry stakeholders now claim that lowering the cost of sending money remains a crucial driver in boosting diaspora remittances this year.

Remittances are expected to decrease this year by 1% as a result of deteriorating conditions in the countries where migrants are going, according to the international lender. Sending $200, for example, to Sub-Saharan Africa, which includes Kenya, costs 7.8% of the total amount, down from 8.7% the year before.

Remittances from nations in the least costly corridors are on average 3.4%, while those in the most expensive corridors are on average 25.2%.

Remittances to Sub-Saharan Africa, the region most affected by the global crisis, increased by an estimated 5.2% last year to $53 billion (Sh6.96 trillion), up from 16.4% the year before, according to the World Bank’s report. The growth was primarily attributable to strong flows to Nigeria and Kenya.

Costs must be brought down in order to increase the number of remittances. Remittances from the diaspora did nothing in February to help the nation’s dwindling foreign exchange reserves, which have subsequently fallen to a 10-year low.

Weekly data from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) shows Kenyans living and working abroad sent home $309.2 million (Sh39.9 billion), 3% lower than $349.4 million (Sh45 billion) the previous month.

Since July of last year, this is the lowest revenue. The World Bank regulator did not provide explanations for the reduction, but analysts are attributing it to the challenging global economic environment, where high inflation is pinching disposable income.

Nevertheless, compared to $3.8 billion (Sh490.2 billion) in February 2022, the cumulative inflows for the 12 months ending in February 2023 were $4.03 billion (Sh520 billion).

“The remittance inflows continue to support the current account and the foreign exchange market. The US remains the largest source of remittances into Kenya, accounting for 59%,” CBK said.

At the height of the epidemic, international transfer costs were reduced by global payment companies like WorldRemit, making it more affordable to send money to 450 of its busier corridors in Africa. According to the business, the cheaper pricing allowed clients to transfer more to friends and family in Kenya and other African regions using the mobile app or website.

According to the company’s data, remittances are mostly used in Kenya for domestic, medical, and educational expenses. “Migrants’ resilience and commitment to their loved ones back home has proven to be vital, especially in a period where household expenses are increasing around the world,” World Remit notes.

  • Ukrainian pilots are “trained and prepared” for British fighter jets

Ukrainian pilots are “trained and prepared” for British fighter jets

The leader of Ukraine’s parliament stated that the country’s pilots are prepared to get training to operate British weaponry.

On his visit to Westminster today, Ruslan Stefanchuk stated that once his nation “gets the wings,” it can achieve “joint victory for Ukraine and the world.”

Volodymyr Zelensky has pleaded with nations again and time again for the aid of jets in their conflict with Russia.

Notwithstanding partners’ reluctance to deliver the cutting-edge airplanes, the RAF will train Ukrainian pilots on Nato-standard jets.

Mr Stefanchuk said: ‘We are ready for more intense training of Ukrainian servicemen.

‘We’re ready to send our pilots to be trained in fighter jets.’

He also thanked Britain for sending 14 Challenger 2 tanks, paving the way for other nations to do the same.

‘Today is the time for Britain to become a leader to also open the door to use aircraft and long-range rockets,’ he said.

Mr Stefanchuk also used his visit to call for the creation of a special tribunal to investigate Moscow’s war crimes.

‘We want to use all the legal mechanisms to make sure Russia is defeated legally, held accountable for all the crimes they commit in Ukraine,’ he said.

He added Vladimir Putin’s crimes are ‘not real if they are not prosecuted’.

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle welcomed his Ukrainian counterpart to Westminster, telling him: ‘Our Parliament is your Parliament.

‘Ukrainian politicians play a vital role in serving their people and telling the world the reality of war.

‘We are a friend that will listen, we are a friend that will support and continue to support.’

  • BoG did not print cash to finance the gov’t budget in 2022- Ernest Addison

BoG did not print cash to finance the gov’t budget in 2022- Ernest Addison

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Dr Ernest Addison has reiterated his point that the Bank of Ghana (BoG) did not print cash to finance the government budget in 2022.

Speaking at the 111th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference in Accra on Monday, March 27, he stated that the central bank has enough cash sitting in its vault.

If it becomes necessary, the BoG releases the cash to support the economic demands, he said.

Answering questions from journalists at the event, Dr Addison said “First and foremost, Bank of Ghana’s forecast for currency printing does not include government financing needs, we make an estimate of the GDP for the year, a major factor in that is the cocoa production forecast. So that is what goes into forecasting currency printing requirements.

“If you go to the Bank’s office at Spintex Road we have our currency processing center there, we have a vault full of Cedis so we don’t need to print money, we already have cash sitting in our vault and release these resources as an when the economy demands that.

“So the impression that Bank of Ghana prints money to finance overdraft is completely wrong, it is a mischievous way of presenting the issues.”

Earlier, Dr Addison defended the central bank’s decision to finance government expenditure in 2022.

He said the economy would have been destabilised and come to a standstill had the BoG not stepped in to support the government.

Speaking at the SIGA annual stakeholder meeting in Kwahu Abetifi in the Eastern Region yesterday, Dr Addison said: “We need to remember where we are coming from at the beginning of 2022 when we lost access to the capital market.”

“This is a government that had access to the capital market for at least $3 billion each year, but we started 2022 with the downgrading of the economy and, therefore, the source of financing was not available.

“In addition to that, the revenue measures were not working, with the revenue projections performing below targets.”

“All those meant that government finances were in trouble, as expenditures needed to be funded, but there was no money,” he said.

He said the central bank, therefore, had to step in to help the country go through those difficult times.

“It is important to recognise that we could have gone into this crisis much earlier than we went; if the BoG hadn’t stepped in, investors in government bonds were not going to be paid the interest,” he said.

The central bank came under pressure in recent times over its decision to support the government’s budget in 2022, with some describing the decision as reckless.

On a net basis, the BoG last year financed the government to the tune GH¢44.5 billion.

The Governor said the situation of the central bank financing the government, however, became unsustainable by the middle of 2022, hence the decision of the government to approach the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for support.

He said even the technical team from the IMF recognised that the central bank needed to keep the system stable and the economy going.

“They admitted that the financing from the central bank was needed until we had a plan. We have been discussing this plan with the IMF over the last three to six months and finally had a staff-level agreement in December,” he said.

Dr Addison said the plan involved the fiscal consolidation plan, as one leg, and the debt restructuring currently underway, as the second.

“So when people speak as if we have been reckless, I disagree completely,” he insisted.

The executive management and officers of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) have paid a courtesy call on the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, at his residence in Fadama, Accra to observe the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The delegation, made up of Muslim and Christian staff from a cross-section of the petroleum downstream regulator, was led by its Chief Executive, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid.

In his remarks, Dr. Abdul-Hamid indicated that the aim was to call on the National Chief Imam to see his health condition, adding that “we recognise that people like him, it is for the sake of their prayers and intercession for our country that we continue to be an island of peace in all this turbulence around West Africa.”

He said the visit was also to present food items to the National Chief Imam towards the celebration of the Eid-ul- Fitr (the celebration at  the end of Ramadan).

The items include bags of rice, tinned tomatoes, tuna chunks, cooking oil, cartoons of brown sugar, ideal milk, and cartons of assorted drinks, milo and boxes of bottled water.

“We know that people like him are responsible for the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. We know that people like him because of their position where Allah has blessed them they are not capable of going to go and work and earn money. So those of us that Allah has imbued with strength and intellect and the ability to find, when we find it is our responsibility to come and share with people like you,” he emphasised.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid who doubles as the President of African Refiners and Distributors Association said the items were to assist the Chief Imam, feed the hundreds of people “that will come looking for something to quench their fast”

“So we have come to make this donation and seek his intercession with Allah for the growth and progress of the National petroleum Authority” he prayed.

The National Chief Imam, receiving the items, expressed appreciation to the NPA for the gesture and offered prayers for the NPA Chief Executive and his entourage for development.

  • China promises to support Ghana in debt servicing relief

China promises to support Ghana in debt servicing relief

China’s Finance Minister, Liu Kun, says his country has confidence in the management of the Ghanaian economy, and that his country would help Ghana seek debt servicing relief.

At a meeting in Beijing with Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, last week, Mr. Kun said the Chinese authorities “have confidence in Ghana’s economic management and its long-term economic viability.”

Mr. Kun said he wanted to ensure that Ghana’s external debt treatment request was considered expeditiously and was thus accompanied to the meeting with Mr. Ofori-Atta by a high-level delegation including Mr. Wu Fuli, Chairman of China Exim-Bank.

Minister Kun said “we know that these are short-term challenges which we as responsible creditors, remain committed to resolving”.

Debt servicing relief: China pledges to support Ghana

“The long-standing and prosperous relationship between Ghana and China imposes on us a responsibility to help,” the Chinese Finance Minister added.

He said that just like other African countries, Ghana was facing economic difficulties from a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, geopolitical tensions and interest rates hike in advanced countries with a spillover effect on developing countries.

This week, all eyes are on Ghana’s parliament which will consider three key revenue measures whose approval is expected to rake in ¢4.4 billion in domestic revenues. It is one of the major actions on the part of Ghana, critical to trigger IMF Executive Board approval of a $3 billion dollar facility for the country to ease its current economic difficulties.

Debt servicing relief: China pledges to support Ghana

The Chinese officials have expressed commitment to help Ghana resolve the current short-term liquidity challenges and continue to support Ghana’s medium and long-term development aspirations.

They said China believed in promoting debt sustainability and sustainable development and would advocate for more concessional and grant funding for Ghana, especially at this time.

“Ghana needs more concessional and grant fund from creditors,” said Mr. Zhang Wencai, Vice President of China Exim bank, adding that “the Multilateral Banks should therefore do more for Ghana.”

Mr. Ofori-Atta congratulated Liu Kun on his reappointment as Minister for Finance following the recently-ended National People’s Congress and thanked the Chinese authorities for participating in the G20 Creditor Committee meeting on Tuesday March 21, 2023.

He indicated that this was a sign of China’s show of leadership in the global financial ecosystem, and an affirmation of their support for Ghana.

Debt servicing relief: China pledges to support Ghana

Other Chinese officials who met Mr. Ofori-Atta were Deng Li, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs; Li Fei, Vice Minister of Commerce; Wang Weidong of the China Development Bank (CDB), Yang Haitao, General Manager of the International Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), and Luo Zhaohui, Chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA).

Ghana makes significant progress in negotiations for debt treatment

Mr. Ofori-Atta said Ghana had made significant progress in its negotiations for debt treatment with the Paris Club and other bilateral creditors, under the G20 Common Framework.

The Paris Club had therefore agreed to form the Official Creditor Committee and deliver financing assurances to the IMF soon in order to clear the path for its executive board’s approval of Ghana’s programme by early May.

He also requested China to Co-chair the Official Creditor Committee.

Minister Kun further stated that China would hope that Multilateral and Commercial creditors will also fully participate in the interest of burden sharing.

Osebo accepts fashion challenge against Cheddar

Ghanaian fashionista and business owner Richard Brown, also known as Osebo the Zara Man, said he was ready to compete with the popular Ghanaian real estate mogul Freedom Jacob Caesar, in a fashion contest.

However, he claims he would only challenge his new opponent after shopping for a few clothes in preparation for the new challenge.

Osebo had previously competed with his friend, Ajagurajah, in a fashion challenge for some days until Ajagurajah gave up on the challenge due to the unavailability of more clothes to use in the competition.

Ajagurajah announced publicly that it was best he threw in the towel and crowned Osebo the winner with his daily and non-stop posts about new fashionable trends.

After the challenge, fans of the fashionista and followers of the fashion icon proposed that he compete with Freedom Caesar as he was also known to be fashionable and loved to wear expensive clothes.

Fans have commented on Osebo’s post, claiming he was trying to find an opportunity to escape his possible loss in the upcoming competition since Freedom is known as one of Ghana’s richest men.

  • China pledges its dedication to assisting Ghana in resolving its current economic crisis

China pledges its dedication to assisting Ghana in resolving its current economic crisis

The Chinese government has given a strong indication that it is willing to help Ghana secure the balance of payments bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to the Chinese government, it has an obligation to ensure the Ghanaian economy does not collapse.

This is according to the Chinese Finance Minister Mr Liu Kun.

Mr Kun explained that this is due to the confidence they have in the long-term economic prospects of Ghana.

“We know that these are short-term challenges which we as responsible creditors remain committed to resolving.

The long-standing and prosperous relationship between Ghana and China imposes on us, a responsibility to help”.

“Chinese authorities have confidence in Ghana’s economic management and its long-term economic viability.”

Mr Kun also added that “China believes in promoting debt sustainability and sustainable development.”

Mr Liu Kun made the comments when Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta led a delegation to engage China over a $1.7 billion debt.

The Ghana delegation is made up of Technical Officials from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bank of Ghana.

Mr Ofori-Atta discussed the bilateral talks with China on debt restructuring as well as seeking financial assurances for Ghana’s programme with the IMF.

The objective of the engagement is not debt cancellation but to maintain that the issue will be discussed.

Mr Ofori-Atta has earlier said discussions with the Chinese government on the country’s debt restructuring programme have been positive.

According to him, Ghana will soon secure external assurances from China.

Mr Ofori-Atta in a tweet on Friday, March 24, also expressed optimism about the government passing the three new tax bills in Parliament.

The Investment Banker added that the government is making significant progress on securing a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Passing revenue measures as a pre-condition for IMF Programme

Government is hoping to get parliament’s approval for three revenue bills which are key requirements for securing a deal with the IMF.

The bills are the Income Tax Amendment Bill, the Excise Duty Amendment Bill and the Growth and Sustainability Amendment Bill, all expected to rake in about GH¢4 billion annually.

Earlier negotiations with Paris Club Members

According to the government, there has been some significant progress made in negotiations with the Paris Club.

    Details on China’s Debt

The structure of Ghana’s External Debt showed that Ghana owes China about 1.7 Billion Dollars. Eurobonds is 13.1 Billion Dollars, Multilateral accounts for about 8.1 Billion Dollars.

The rest are Paris Club Countries – $1.9 billion and other creditors accounting for $3.2 billion.

Dutch musician faces court bid to halt his obsessive sperm donation

A Dutch musician is facing court in a bid to get him to stop his ‘obsessive’ sperm donating amid claims he has fathered hundreds of children around the world.

Jonathan Jacob Meijer, 41, has misled hundreds of women all over the world and may have fathered nearly 550 children, according to the Donorkind Foundation, which is suing him.

Mr Meijer, from The Hague, Netherlands, was blacklisted in 2017 after the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology warned he had fathered 102 children via ten different clinics in the Netherlands.

But he continued to donate abroad in Denmark and Ukraine and offered his services through websites and social media, according to the Dutch news website AD.

Eva, the Dutch woman at the centre of the court case, had a child by Mr Meijer in 2018 and said it made her feel ‘sick to her stomach’ that he had fathered so many children.

She said: ‘If I had known he had already fathered more than 100 children I would never have chosen him.

‘If I think about the consequences this could have for my child I am sick to my stomach.

‘Many mothers have told him he needs to stop, but nothing helps. So going to court is the only option I have to protect my child.’

Eva and the Donorkind Foundation want to stop Mr Meijer donating and to find out exactly which clinics he has donated sperm to.

They have accused Mr Meijer of ‘lying’ to hundreds of women about the number of children he has fathered.

Eva also wants all his sperm still in storage to be destroyed, unless it has been reserved for a woman who already has one of his children.

‘In addition, he violates the agreements with the clinics and with the prospective parents, because they trusted his promise that he would father a maximum of 25 children.’

Six little girls killed in a car accident

On Sunday morning, a car struck the shoulder barrier of a congested highway, killing six girls.

In the early hours of the morning, a Toyota Camry drove off the road in Tennessee, a US state.

All six girls and a woman were ejected from the car as it rolled over after being struck.

At the scene, the children were pronounced dead, while the woman was airlifted to the hospital in a critical condition.

A man who was riding along with them was also injured, and he was taken to another hospital.

Officials have not yet released the names of the victims, but Brent Dyer, chief of the county’s emergency management services office, said they range in age from just one-years-old to 18-years-old.

A Robertson County Emergency Medical Services statement read: ‘A total of four Advanced Life Support ambulances responded to this scene and one helicopter/air ambulance. Initial arriving units worked quickly to search for, assess and triage the total nine patients involved.

‘Only one other vehicle was involved. The vehicle was a car that was found upside down with very extensive damage.

‘Another adult male was ambulatory on the scene and reported to responders that he had been in this car. This man was stable with what appeared to be minor injuries at that time.’

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said it would be investigating the cause of the crash, which took place near exit 24 on I-24 West in Robertson County.

Officials said a damaged pickup truck was also recovered at the scene but have not said whether it was involved in the crash.

They confirmed that the vehicle collided with a concrete barrier underneath a bridge and came to rest half a mile down the road from the scene of the crash.

Robertson County Emergency Medical Services said it was ensuring that those who attended the scene were provided with mental health support.

‘Our office recognises the incredible difficulty of this scene. Further coordination to involve professional mental health and counseling services for responders has been established,’ it said.

‘Please keep the families and persons involved in your thoughts and prayers.’

  • Barclays bank announces 14 more brunch closures, leaving customers in panic

Barclays bank announces 14 more brunch closures, leaving customers in panic

Barclays has revealed plans to shut down 14 more branches across England and Wales in June.

These closures will be in addition to the 55 branches the bank already planned to shut this year, meaning at least 69 Barclays branches will shut in 2023.

Its decision follows that of other major banks, which have axed branches as more people move to online banking.

Lloyds, Barclays, NatWest, HSBC and Santander have all shut down more than half of their branches since 2015.

Barclays will close a further 14 bank branches across England and Wales in June, meaning at least 69 branches will close in 2023

The decision by Barclays to close at least 69 branches before the end of 2023 comes after the bank had already shut 67 per cent of their sites in the UK since 2015.

The move from Barclays means their customers will now need to rely on pop-up sites and ‘banking pods’ if they require in-person support.

These ‘banking pods’ are semi-permanent sites that can be moved across different towns and cities to satisfy demand.

Currently, Barclays has 200 pop-up sites and ten ‘banking pods’, with plans to add another 70 pop-up sites in the near future.

In addition, the bank runs an educational and support van service to provide financial advice to their customers.

A Barclays spokesperson said: ‘As visits to branches continue to fall, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers.

‘Where there is no longer enough demand to support a branch, we maintain an in-person presence though our Barclays Local network, live in over 200 locations, based in libraries, town halls, mobile vans and our new banking pods.

‘We also support access to cash with our cashback without purchase service, 24-hour deposit-taking ATMs and by working alongside the Post Office and Cash Access UK.’

    Ghana’s reserves increase to $2.62bn

Ghana’s net international reserves improved slightly to $2.62 billion, about 2.8 months of import cover in February 2023, the Bank of Ghana has revealed in its March 2023 Summary of Economic and Financial Data.

This is from the $2.24 billion recorded in December 2022, about 2.7 months of import cover.

The country’s Balance of Payment at the end of February 2023 also stood at a deficit of $3.63 billion, approximately 5% of Gross Domestic Product.

This was as a result of a significant decline in the  Capital and Financial Account Balance which stood at a deficit of $2.17 billion in December 2022, compared with a surplus of $.3.30 billion in December 2021.

The negative Capital and Financial Account Balance was a result of net portfolio of investments outflow of $2.05 billion in December 2022.

The Current Account Balance also stood at a deficit $1.516 billion in December 2023, approximately 2.1% of GDP.

Net international reserves have been declining from $6.07 billion in January 2022, about 4.4 months of import cover, largely due to the selling of investments by foreign investors.

Man accused of murder as 44-year-old died from a heart stabbing

Following the single stabbing death of another man, a man has been charged with murder.

Stefan Stelian Moraru, 44, died today, and Migen Emilova, 35, of no fixed abode, was charged with murder.

About six in the morning on Monday, Mr. Moraru was discovered gravely hurt in Chandos Avenue in Barnet, London, and he passed away there.

The Romanian national had been hurt prior to a “disturbance or altercation,” according to the Met Police, who shortly after opened a murder inquiry.

A post-mortem examination held on Tuesday confirmed he died from a stab wound to the heart, they added.

Mr Moraru’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command.

Emilova will appear in custody at Willesden Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (March 27).

Detectives have also arrested three more men on suspicion of murder. Two men, aged 46 and 39, remain in custody at a north London police station.

A 29-year-old man has been bailed pending further enquiries.

  • Ghana reports a trade surplus of $752.8 million in the first two months of 2023

Ghana reports a trade surplus of $752.8 million in the first two months of 2023

Ghana recorded a trade surplus of $752.8 million in the first two months of 2023, about 1.0% of Gross Domestic Product, data from the Bank of Ghana has disclosed.

This is far more than the surplus of $205.8 million recorded during the same period in 2021.

The significant growth in trade surplus was due to significant proceeds from gold exports, whilst net imports also fell.

Importantly, total exports in the first two months of 2023 went up by 11.19% year-on-year to $2.76 billion. Total exports for the first two months in 2022 was $2.48 billion.

Crude oil exports fall to $562m

Crude oil exports in February 2022 stood at, $562.6 million, lower than the $688.8 million recorded in February 2022.

This is mainly due to price effects as the crude oil price has gone down significantly from over $100 to about $73.

Gold exports up 35% to $1.11bn

Gold export earnings, however, went up by 35.7% to $1.11 billion, supported by increased production volumes triggered by the positive response from small-scale gold exporters.

    Cocoa exports up by 11.63%

Cocoa receipts also went up by 11.63% year-year to $546 million in February 2023.

This is despite lower prices and low cocoa purchases.

  • Akufo-Addo distances himself from anti-LGBTQ bill in front of Kamala Harris

Akufo-Addo distances himself from anti-LGBTQ bill in front of Kamala Harris

President Akufo-Addo has disassociated himself from the anti-gay bill that is currently being considered by parliament.

Speaking at the Jubilee House during a joint press brief with the U.S Vice President, Kamala Harris, on Monday, March 27, 2023, he clarified that his administration has no hand in the proposition of the Bill.

“The Legislation was a legislation that is being proposed as a Private Members Bill. This is not an official legislation of the government but it is one that is being mooted by a handful of private members,” he said.

His comment was in response to a question posed by a New York Times journalist who was inquiring about the position of the US government on Ghana’s proposed LGBTQI Bill during the joint press conference with the US Vice President and President Akufo-Addo.

Kamala Harris in response noted that the subject of the LGBTQI is an issue of Human Rights, thus, the US government prefers to treat it as such.

“A great deal of my work has been on human rights issues and equality across the board including the LGBTQ community. I believe strongly in supporting freedom and providing equality to all people and that all people be treated equally. I will also say that this is an issue I consider to be a human rights issue and that will not change,” she said.

Reacting to the same question, President Akufo-Addo dismissed assertions that an anti-gay bill has been passed in the country.

“We don’t have any such legislation in Ghana. A Bill has been proposed to the Parliament of Ghana which has all kinds of ramifications which is now being considered by the Parliament. It hasn’t been passed so the statement that there is Legislation in Ghana to that effect is not accurate. No legislation.

He added that “the bill is going through the Parliament [and] the Attorney-General has found it necessary to speak to the committee about it regarding the constitutionality, otherwise, of several of its provisions and the Parliament is dealing with it.

“At the end of the process I will come in but in the meantime the Parliament is dealing with it. And then I have no doubt that the Parliament of Ghana will show as it’s done in the past, first of all its sensitivity to human rights issues as well as to the feelings of our population and we’ll come out with the responsible response to the proposed Bill,” he added.

  •  BoG raises policy rate to 29.5%.

BoG raises policy rate to 29.5%.

The Bank of Ghana has increased its policy rate by 150 basis points to 29.5% to help check the high inflation and any downside risks to the economy.

This means the cost of credit will continue to remain high, affecting household spending and private sector growth.

Average lending rates shot up marginally to 36.64% in February 2023, from 35.58% recorded in December 2022. This is equivalent to 3.02% interest rate on loans per month.

Announcing the development few minutes ago, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, said the ease in price pressures abroad will likely impact positively on Ghana’s domestic inflation profile going forward.

“Headline inflation has declined marginally for two consecutive months, but continues to remain relatively high compared to the medium-term target of 8±2 percent. To place the economy firmly on the path of stability and reinforce the pace of disinflation, it is important that the monetary policy stance be tuned further to re[1]anchor inflation expectations towards the medium-term target. Given these considerations, the MPC decided to increase the Monetary Policy Rate by 150 basis points to 29.5 percent”, he said.

He said the recent Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) has impacted negatively on banks, hence the need for the Central Bank to make necessary adjustments to its regulatory requirements to support the banks.

“Whiles the domestic economy still faces relatively tight global financing conditions and heightened uncertainty about the global economic outlook, the effects of these could be amplified inherent vulnerabilities including structural and excess liquidity following the DDEP and the widening negative outlook gap”.

He, however, said the banks remain strong, sound and stable based on its recent stress test.

He added that the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Ghana will continue to monitor developments within the banking industry to reduce the downside risks to the economy.

He explained that on fiscal policy, the Committee noted that the budget statement for 2023 has set fiscal policy on a consolidation path which is consistent with key elements agreed with the IMF at the Staff Level in December 2022.

“The domestic debt exchange, new revenue measures, and structural fiscal reforms will provide significant reduction of debt service and help create fiscal space”.

Dr. Addison stated that the fiscal outlook is contingent on financing of the budget and will require the conclusion of the domestic debt exchange programme as well as securing the requisite financing assurances from bilateral donors.

“Indications are that these discussions are proceeding well. Based on the above, it is imperative that Parliament prioritizes the passage of the revenue bills currently before it. Under the Staff Level Agreement with the IMF, the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance have finalised a Memorandum of Understanding on zero financing to the budget, which will be signed shortly”, he said.

He added that the passage of the relevant revenue bills by Parliament will conclude the required prior actions to advance Ghana’s programme to the IMF Executive Board.

This, he said will be critical in resetting the economy on the path of recovery, including putting it firmly on a disinflation path and sustained growth.

  • An explosion at a chocolate factory left two more people dead

An explosion at a chocolate factory left two more people dead

The two remains of those who were missing following an explosion at a chocolate factory in eastern Pennsylvania have been found, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven.

At the RM Palmer Co. plant in West Reading, about 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia, an explosion occurred on Friday afternoon.

The last two remains were found, according to mayor Samantha Kaag, who also stated that no names of the deceased will be released until authorities are assured that all families have been reached.

“Please appreciate that this is a sad loss, but we are very grateful to bring closure to the families affected in the coming days,” she stated in response.

Three buildings around the site will be condemned as a precaution, she said.

She added: ‘This does not mean they are slated for demolition or uninhabitable.’

‘Simply that there will still be work happening around them as we proceed and they will need to be looked at further by structural engineers.’

One woman was pulled alive from the rubble on Saturday after being found by a search dog.

Liz Soto witnessed the explosion and is desperately trying to find a friend who works at the plant.

She told FOX 29: ’She went to work, she’s confirmed to have gone to work, but we don’t know anything about her.’

Ms Soto also described a ‘loud noise, like a roaring sound’ in the seconds before the explosion.

Reading Hospital said it received 10 patients and transferred two to other facilities, while two others were admitted in good and fair condition respectively and the others had been discharged.

A statement from RM Palmer said everyone at the company was ‘devastated’ and it was reaching out to employees and their families through first responders and disaster recovery organisations because its communication systems were down.

Governor Josh Shapiro vowed support from the state when he visited the scene on Saturday.

Fire investigators are continuing to examine the scene to try to determine the cause of the blast.

  • Pained Zanetor suggests lie detector test, Antoa to fish out Traitor NDC MPs

Korle Klottey MP, Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, has joined scores of NDC MPs condemning the ‘betrayal’ of some MPs within the Minority Caucus who voted in favour of the approval of six ministerial appointees of the Akufo-Addo led administration, despite the party’s decision not to support their approval.

A unanimous ‘No’ vote by the NDC MPs would have rendered the appointments void since they had more numbers than their opponents on the day the votes were cast, however,  after the secret ballot, all six appointees had garnered Majority votes to pass them from the position, indicating that some MPs broke rank and voted a ‘Yes’ against the party’s directive.

This move by the ‘anonymous’ MPs has been described by the party as a grave act of betrayal.

In a Facebook post, the Korle Klottey legislator, who is yet to come to terms with the results of the secret ballot, recounted how she painstakingly sent her phone to the voting booth to record her vote as evidence to protect her integrity, although she knew very well the implications of being caught. The effort , however, came to naught since some MPs decided to pursue their personal interests.

“I’m still reeling from the outcome of the secret ballot in the House on Friday. I’ve sat with the sad realisation that the unfortunate side of being part of a collective is the collective shame that comes with the actions of a few unknown faces whose actions affect everyone.

“I knew it was risky taking my phone into the booth, because there was a chance that the Speaker might chastise me openly. I told my colleagues sitting in my section what I was going to do and why. I got to the voting booth and nervously lifted my phone to record my hand ticking the ‘No’ column, feeling so annoyed that I was having to subject myself to this! When I got to my seat, I checked the video to make sure it had captured my vote, and then informed my colleagues that it had worked! I then suggested that they do the same, for their own protection.

“I must admit that I was still shocked by the results. I was crestfallen! But even the knowledge of my evidence of how I voted, did not bring me the relief I had hoped for. People were looking up to us, and we had let the side down,” she added.

She noted that her father would have challenged the MPs from the Minority Caucus to swear an oath or subject themselves to a lie detector test to prove themselves of no betrayal.

“My father continued to advise and chastise the party in the face of sometimes outright abuse from his own, but he remained true to his convictions. I still remember vividly when from his hospital bed, he asked me how the people in my constituency were doing in the lead up to the 2020 General Elections. Even when he was a few days away from his own death, he was still worried about Ghana! On Friday night, I felt this deep pain that maybe it was perhaps better that he was not alive to witness what had happened to the NDC. But then again, I thought perhaps had he been alive he would probably have challenged all of us to go and swear on Antoa or dared us to take a lie-detector test!

“Alas! Our Founder is no longer with us, but we have come too far to destroy our own legacy! We must course correct, immediately! We need to return to the values and principles on which this party was built including honesty, accountability, integrity, discipline and commitment to our nation, Ghana!!” she added.

She further questioned why those who were opposed to the party’s decision did not speak up before the vote.

“The NDC took a decision to vote against the President’s nominations on principle. We needed President Akufo-Addo to avert his mind to the bloated size of his government/cabinet to show the commitment of the Executive to reduce its expenditure as the government struggles with unsustainable debt.

“If you disagree with a position the party and leadership have taken, have the courage of your convictions and speak up! It is cowardice and treachery to hide within the collective to pursue your individual parochial agenda!!! For the first time, I was forced to keep evidence of my votes to protect my integrity and my name!” she lamented.
