‘This is what movies is made of’ – Towns euphoric at dramatic Timberwolves return

Karl-Anthony Towns marked his return to action with a Hollywood ending as a pair of last-gasp free throws handed the Minnesota Timberwolves a 125-124 win against the Atlanta Hawks.

With 3.6 seconds left on the clock, Towns had ice in his veins as he made both his shots to put Minnesota decisively ahead.

There was still time left for Atlanta’s Saddiq Ben to be impeded by Taurean Prince, but a foul was not given, with a game official reportedly later saying that was an error.

That could have seen Towns denied his returning glory, having featured for the first time since November 28.

Sidelined by a calf strain for almost four months, the first pick in the 2015 NBA Draft scored 22 points in his comeback game on 8-of-18 shooting.

“This is what movies is made of,” Towns said in an on-court interview with Bally Sports. “Four months away, two free throws, don’t worry about it, I got that!”

In a later press conference, the 27-year-old thanked coach Chris Finch for backing him.

Towns was the player fouled to set up the game-winning chance, trusting himself to get the job done.

“I was smiling a lot just in my mind,” Towns said. “On the court I probably didn’t show it, but even before I got the ball with seven seconds left I was smiling.

“I just had a good feeling that the game was going to go the way I wanted it to, so the play was immediately drawn up for me.

“Finch looked at me with everyone around and said, ‘You’re going to get the ball, and it’s yours to take home’.

“So shout out to Finch having that confidence in me after 51 games [out of action] and all the things I’ve had to deal with.”

Towns added: “When I went up there for two free throws I looked back and he was telling people, ‘He ain’t missing, I’m telling you that right now’, and I just knew in my bones I wasn’t going to miss.

“I’ve worked too hard on my game. I’ve been in those moments too many times.

“I got told I didn’t have one fast heartbeat at all. I felt pretty confident, I felt pretty calm. I feel like I had that Jaden McDaniels demeanour up there, and I was just going up and making those shots.”

Chelsea seem to have resigned themselves to making a major loss on Romelu Lukaku, who has only netted five times on loan at Inter this term.

According to a Football Insider report, the Blues are ready to move him on in at the end of the season, with Inter unlikely to try to extend his stay in Milan.

Chelsea spent £97.5milion to bring Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge in August 2021, but they are unlikely to get anywhere near that now.

Murray removed by Lajovic in Miami Open first-round upset, Monfils retires injured

Two-time Miami Open champion Andy Murray has been eliminated in the first round of this year’s event after a shock 6-4 7-5 loss to world number 76 Dusan Lajovic on Wednesday.

Murray, ranked 53rd in the world, could not find his usual return with Lajovic winning 72 per cent of second-serve points, prevailing in one hour and 38 minutes.

The Serbian claimed only his fourth win out of 16 matches on hard courts since the start of last year, holding his nerve after failing to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second set, converting his third match point in the 12th game.

Lajovic hit 21-14 winners, with Murray committing more unforced errors (15-13). The Serbian converted all three break points he generated.

Former world number six Gael Monfils was forced to retire due to a right wrist injury in his clash with French compatriot Ugo Humbert at 3-3.

Monfils, 36, was playing at only his third event since returning to the ATP Tour following seven months out due to injury.

Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis defeated Brazilian qualifier Felipe Meligeni Alves 6-3 1-6 6-4, with his reward a second-round clash with last week’s Indian Wells Open winner and top seed Carlos Alcaraz.

World number 50 J.J. Wolf beat world number 48 Alexander Bublik 7-5 6-3 in 79 minutes, earning a second-round clash with sixth seed Andrey Rublev.

World number 74 Martin Fucsovics sent down nine aces as he beat Argentina’s Pedro Cachin 6-4 7-6 (7-2) in 107 minutes. Fucsovics will next face seventh seed Holger Rune.

Raducanu leaves Miami Open first half against former US Open champion Andreescu

Emma Raducanu was bundled out of the Miami Open in the first round by form US Open champion Bianca Andreescu in a three-set match that lasted two hours and 35 minutes on Wednesday.

The Briton, who won the US Open in 2021, went down 6-3 3-6 6-2 in a genuine tug-of-war against the 31st-ranked Canadian.

Andreescu sent down seven aces for the match, including four in the first set along with 12 winners as she claimed an early lead.

Raducanu responded with greater aggression, securing the crucial break in the eighth game, before serving out to level the contest.

But Andreescu showed composure and quality in the big points in the final set, winning the final four games to round out the victory, sealing a second-round clash with seventh seed Maria Sakkari.

Andreescu finished with 32 winners compared to Raducanu’s 20, while the Briton committed 40 unforced errors.

World number 42 Shelby Rogers edged out USA compatriot Sloane Stephens in just under two hours, winning 6-4 3-6 6-2. Rogers will take on second seed Aryna Sabalenka, who is arguably the tournament favourite after top seed Iga Swiatek’s withdrawal, in the next round.

Rogers was one of five Americans to progress, including 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin who defeated Australia’s Storm Hunter 6-0 7-6 (7-5).

World number 35 Amanda Anisimova retired down 7-6 (7-5) 5-2 to countrywoman Madison Brengle.

Leylah Fernandez, the player whom Raducanu beat in the 2021 US Open final, advanced into the second round with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Lesia Tsurenko in 88 minutes.

US rapper 6ix9ine mercilessly beaten in a gym at LA

Tekashi 6ix9ine was taken to the hospital after being ambushed by a bunch of assailants in a South Florida gym’s restroom on Tuesday.

According to his lawyer Lance Lazzaro, the 26-year-old rapper, whose actual name is Daniel Hernandez, suffered bruising and facial damage.

Lazzaro claimed that the rapper attempted to defend himself but was attacked by three or four individuals who beat him up inside and outside the sauna at the LA Fitness gym. He had bruises and cuts on his face, according to Lazzaro.

According to the attorney, the offenders ran away as soon as the employees heard the noise.

His Lawyer said, South Florida police were contacted, and Hernandez was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance. It is not yet known if the rapper is still receiving medical attention.

Hernandez was released from federal jail in April 2020, and according to Lazzaro, he wants to make sure he receives some protection.

On nine counts, including racketeering, drug trafficking, and firearm violations, Hernandez was arrested in 2019 and given a two-year prison term for his membership in the Nine Trey Bloods gang.

After assisting federal agents in putting his pals in prison, Hernandez’s prison term was reduced. After a court referred to the rapper as a “model prisoner,” he was released early because of COVID-19 concerns.

Don’t be selfish in bed – Women chastised

Actress and fashion designer, Amma Serwaa, has disclosed that women are to blame for their inability to reach orgasm during sex.

She noted that some ladies are selfish and love to keep their feelings to themselves, and this is mostly a disadvantage to men.

Speaking in an interview on e.tv Ghana’s ‘In Bed with Adwen’ show, she said, “I believe it is a lady’s responsibility to reach orgasm however, this does not apply to men who last only 2 minutes in bed. I’m referring to those who know they are good in bed and are doing everything possible to satisfy their women but still, their women are unable to reach orgasm”.

She emphasized that as a woman, “it is your duty to reach orgasm because no man is a magician to know the exact part of your body that can make you reach orgasm.

You have to voice out as a lady and let the man know the right place to touch for you to reach orgasm. Some ladies like to blame the men for everything whereas we don’t even know ourselves,” she said.

The actress stated that it is important for everyone, especially ladies to know themselves and which part of their body when touched can make them reach orgasm faster.

“You can also tell your partner the exact part of your body that can make you reach orgasm. Everyone is different and the part of our body that aids us in reaching orgasm differs. So, if as a lady you haven’t explored your body to know the right place to make you reach orgasm don’t expect a man to do that for you,” she mentioned.

She added that, once women start to explore themselves and know their bodies, they make it easy for men to satisfy them and make them reach orgasm.

Swiatek withdraws from Miami Open due to rib injury

The world number was due to defend her title, having won the tournament last year without dropping a set.

However, she will be unable to feature in Florida due to an ongoing rib issue that has plagued her since the Qatar Open in February.

Swiatek reached the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Open last week, losing to eventual champion Elena Rybakina, and hinted at concerns over her condition.

The Pole confirmed on Wednesday that after consulting with her medical team, she will not play her second-round match against Claire Liu on Thursday and will also miss the Billie Jean King Cup, which takes place in April.

“You know that in and after Doha I was struggling with a strong infection,” Swiatek said.

“I was allowed to play, but a strong episode of tough cough led to a rib injury. We were trying to handle it and continue to play as long as it was safe for me. We were analysing the data in the last [few] days and my doctor prepared my diagnosis.

“Unfortunately, I’m still feeling a lot of discomfort and pain and I can’t compete.

“I will keep you updated about where I play next, because it depends on my process of recovering and the recommendation of my medical team.

“I have the best team behind me, we only need some time to deal with the injury. It’s a truly difficult call to not play in Miami and the Billie Jean King Cup, but health is the most important [thing].

“I’m grateful this is the first health issue in a long time and I was able to compete in perfect shape for so long, but that’s sports, it happens sometimes, without our control.

“Time to accept it and get well as soon as possible.”

Swiatek will be replaced in the women’s draw by lucky loser Julia Grabher.

The 21-year-old will now hope to be fully fit in time for the clay-court season, including the French Open, where she is the reigning champion.

As for me I’m in my world, I’m not part of this kind or that kind of rapper. I can’t be paired with any rapper because I do my own thing and I do it differently.” he stated in an interview on an Accra-based radio entertainment segment.

The ‘Poof Anthem’ advocate however deemed himself as the best person to determine who should be rated the best amongst Ghanaian rappers as he handed a round of applause to rap Landlord Sarkodie and female rap prodigy Eno Barony. “I am the judge, do you understand? I am the one that judges who is best and so on,” he noted.

  • UG lecturer asks govt to withdraw appointment of NPP member as Electoral Commissioner

UG lecturer asks govt to withdraw appointment of NPP member as Electoral Commissioner

A Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asa Asante is disgruntled over the appointment of a member of the New Patriotic Party as a member of the Electoral Commission (EC).

He has therefore urged President Akufo-Addo to withdraw the appointment of the known member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a Commissioner of the Electoral Commission.

On Monday, President Akufo-Addo swore in Dr. Peter Appiahene, Salima Ahmed Tijani, and Rev Akua Ofori Boateng as new members of the commission.

But pictures have since gone viral alleging in particular Dr. Peter Appiahene as a patron of the NPP’s tertiary institutions wing, TESCON, specifically at the University of Energy and Natural Resources.

Many including the Centre for Democratic Development(CDD) Ghana, have expressed misgivings over the appointment of Dr. Appiahene who was at one time tipped to be a Regional Minister.

Speaking on the Morning Starr on Starr FM Wednesday, Dr. Asa Asante argued that the development does not auger well for confidence in the EC to be a fair arbiter.

“The Electoral Commission is a body which by law and by practice must be a neutral arbiter of electoral issues. So for that reason, if somebody is politically exposed, he should not be there. Even if he or she is appointed, the appointing authority can take a second look and withdraw that person because for elections to be free and fair, the electoral body must be neutral at all times and create a neutral enabling environment for all parties and political actors to act on that political sphere.

On that basis, any action taken by an appointing authority that has something to undermine the credibility of the EC obviously flies in the face of the work of the EC.”

He added: “So, I believe that this particular appointment given the evidence that is coming out now, it is important that Mr. President will take a second look at this appointment and withdraw the person. Because from the word go, it will create a whole lot of problems for the EC. The commission itself has over the years been suffering from a lot of concerns from political parties, particularly the NDC.”

Kwabena Agyapong opposes criminalizing homosexuality in Ghana

Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, an aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPPpost )’s as flagbearer, has offered his opinions on the subject of LGBTQI+ rights in Ghana.
According to him, criminalizing the behavior is not the best course of action.

While identifying as a conservative and citing theological justifications for his aversion to the practice, Mr. Agyapong said he respects people’s rights and is against its promotion.

He stressed the need to speak out against it when being interviewed on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana, but he also made clear that he is not in favor of eradicating the LGBTQI+ community.

“I’m very conservative, so although I respect people’s rights, I’m not going to advocate for that kind of behaviour, you understand. I think that we should not criminalize it, and we should not advocate it. It should not be in our faces,” he said.

“We should speak against it because when God created Adam, he did not create another Adam… He created Eve. So I think it’s important to know that all of us are products of women, and so sometimes I worry about that. But, I am not prepared to be part of the argument that says they should be annihilated from the face of the earth.”

He stressed that the nation faces pressing social issues such as drug addiction and other challenges, and it is crucial for leaders to set the right example for the youth.

Mr Agyapong acknowledged that the country should not condone such behaviour and called for leaders to advise and educate the public on the issue.

“We have major social issues in this country, and there are many others. We have drug menace and other things happening around the country, and of course, with social media and the explosion of the world now, it is incumbent on us as leaders of our country to advise, lead by example and set the right examples for our youth. This is not a behaviour that we can condone. It has to be condemned but it does not mean that when we find a homosexual, that person should be stoned.”

The proposed anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, known as the “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill,” seeks to legislate against homosexuality and related activities in Ghana, among other things. The bill was sponsored by private members and introduced into parliament in 2021.

Since Monday, March 20, it had embarked on an aggressive revenue mobilisation drive as part of efforts to reduce its debt situation, which was affecting operations.

ECG disconnects Cape Coast Sports Stadium over GH¢513k legacy debt

This is targeted at every customer owing the ECG and not only state-owned enterprises.

In an interview on Tuesday, Alexander Tieku, the Regional Sports Director, said the disconnection would greatly affect its activities as a monumental state asset.

ECG disconnects Cape Coast Sports Stadium over GH¢513k legacy debt

He explained that the debt inherited many years ago was being settled on arranged negotiations with the ECG when the facility was first disconnected sometime last year, and some payments were made.

Management had also engaged officials of the ECG to install pre-paid meters to direct a chunk of the bills to the various business units at the stadium, which had been carried out with 20 more to be done for smooth operations.

Businesses at the stadium include hostels, restaurants, offices, clinics, and gyms, which were connected to only one post-paid meter, leading to the compilation of huge debts.

Mr Tieku described the situation as ‘unfortunate’ and ‘surprising’ due to the agreement reached by both parties.

So far, the Cape Coast new stadium is the only state-owned organisation affected by the disconnection exercise in the region.

NDC candidate for Abuakwa South Parliamentary seat assaulted

Solomon Nana Frimpong, a prospective NDC parliamentary candidate for the Abuakwa South Constituency in the Eastern Region, was attacked on Tuesday, 2023, by three unidentified assailants.

The three, who were allegedly riding a motorcycle, cut his left arm and ribs with a machete before stealing GHC 20,000 from his car.

After the event, Mr. Frimpong was taken by ambulance to the Kibi Government hospital, where he is still being treated.

The Abuakwa South Communications Officer of the NDC, Aikins Ofori confirmed the incident to Starr FM on Wednesday 22, 2023.

He said the victim was in his private vehicle coming from a hotel in his community-Kyebi Amanfrom when suddenly some young men on a motorbike stopped him pretending to be his supporters singing praises to him.

He was expected to file his nomination form today, Wednesday 22, 2023.

Akufo-Addo calls for prudence when addressing issues with the Constitution

The 1992 Constitution, the nation’s most effective and long-lasting document, has been the subject of calls for caution from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The 1992 Constitution, he added, has served as the cornerstone for the most uninterrupted, stable period of free administration in the otherwise volatile history of the country. He said this without predicting the outcome of the ongoing national debate.

The Constitution, which has served as the cornerstone for the most uninterrupted, stable period of free governance in our otherwise volatile history, ought to be treated with prudence, he said.

President Akufo-Addo made the call when he swore in three members of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) at the Jubilee House in Accra yesterday.

They are a Deputy Chairperson, Mr Victor K. Brobbey, and two members, Simon Ofori Ametepey and Bright Kwabla Agbodeka.

President Akufo-Addo made reference to the classical maxim: “Festina lente”, to wit “make haste slowly”, and urged the NCCE to be sensitive to the demands expressed in several quarters for wholesale or limited amendments to the Fourth Republican Constitution.

    Favourite

Although the President noted that all the functions of the commission were important, he singled out for special mention the significance of the function set out in Article 233 Clause C of the Constitution: “To formulate for the consideration of government, from time to time, programmes at the national, regional and district levels aimed at realising the objectives of this Constitution.”

He added that since its establishment some 30 years ago, the NCCE had done its part in helping Ghanaians to recognise their freedoms and civic rights, even though they could still do much better in that regard.

He indicated that despite concerns raised in some quarters over the effectiveness of the NCCE in the discharge of its functions, with some going as far as advocating  its ability abolition, he was of a different opinion.

  • The president distorted the SONA – NDC

The president distorted the SONA – NDC

As claimed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo manipulated his delivery of the State of the Nation message to Parliament.

The largest opposition group claims that the President ignored the nation’s grave situation and solely focused on glorifying himself.

Presenting what it called the “true state of the nation”, the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, touched on various issues, ranging from the bad state of the economy, the oversize government to the growing spate of corruption and described the current state of the nation as one of “hopelessness, recklessness and corrupt, with a leadership paralysis”.

    Attendance

The event, which took place at the UPSA Auditorium yesterday, brought together the rank and file of the NDC, including members of its Functional Executive Committee (FEC), the National Executive Committee (NEC), regional executives and Members of Parliament (MP).

Notable personalities were the running mate to John Dramani Mahama in the 2020 presidential elections, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang; a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong; the Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson; the General Secretary of the NDC, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey; a member of the Council of Elders, Kofi Totobi Quakyi, and an aspiring flag bearer of the party, Dr Kwabena Duffuor.

The auditorium was filled with an enthusiastic crowd who clapped and cheered intermittently as the presentation was made.

    Flowery speeches

Mr Nketiah said “the true state of our dear nation no longer lies in flowery speeches laced in political chicanery that never accepted responsibility for anything but in taking the bull by the horns”.

He called on President Akufo-Addo to demonstrate leadership by taking immediate steps to cut down the size of his government to signal a new beginning.

“We further expect the government to be tolerant of dissent, heed calls for the implementation of the Constitutional Review recommendations, eschew profligacy, desist from nepotism and corruption, sanction corrupt officials and be honest about the true state of our nation,” he said.

Mr Nketiah stressed that it was unacceptable that in the midst of the economic crisis the country was going through, and despite the numerous calls by many groups, the President remained adamant to cut down the size of his government.

He said some appointees at the Presidency had no business keeping their positions when they added nothing unique to the country’s governance.

    Economy

Turning to claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) inherited a bad economy, Mr Nketiah said the NDC-led government rather handed over an economy with better indicators.

He noted that it was bad governance, wasteful expenditure and a bloated government that put the economy in a crisis situation.

The NDC chairman said the public debt increased from GH₵120 billion in 2016 to GH₵600 million currently, with the debt-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio also increasing from 56 per cent to 103 per cent within the same period.

Again, he said the budget deficit of 6.2 per cent in 2016 had increased to 12 per cent currently, while inflation also skyrocketed from 15.2 per cent in 2016 to 52 per cent.

Touching further on economic indicators, he said the lending rate, which stood at 25 per cent in 2016, increased to between 38 and 45 per cent, with the rate of exchange depreciating from 9.6 per cent in 2016 to 23 per cent in the first two months of 2023.

Mr Nketiah said the downgrading of the country’s economy from B- in 2016 to below junk status was ample testimony of a country that had failed to honour its debt obligations.

In terms of the rate of unemployment, he said the situation worsened from 8.4 per cent to 14 per cent as of 2021, as captured by the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC).

He said the debilitating economic conditions, in addition to the high taxes and high cost of power, had led to the laying off of workers by businesses, while some of them had relocated to some African countries.

“The growth of the agricultural sector reduced from 2.7 per cent in 2016 to 0.7 per cent in 2022, despite the so-called planting for food and jobs (PFJ); growth in the manufacturing sector reduced from 7.9 per cent to 4.5 per cent in 2022, in spite of the one district, one factory (1D1F); growth in the construction sector declined from 8.4 per cent in 2016 to 4.2 per cent in 2022, despite the claim that the government built 11,000 kilometres of road. This is the true state of the nation,” he said.

The NDC Chairman said the President also failed to tell Ghanaians the state of the country in terms of the fight against corruption.

“Instead of confronting the canker head-on, President Akufo-Addo has constituted himself into a corruption clearing agent, ever willing to whitewash himself and any of his appointees who dabbles in corruption, even before investigative processes commence,” he said.

For instance, he cited President Akufo-Addo’s declaration of “nothing dishonourable was done with the COVID-19 Funds” as one of the issues among the litany of failed attempts to conceal the rot that had left many scandalised following the publication of the Special Audit into COVID-19 funds by the Auditor-General.

“How does President Akufo-Addo reasonably expect Ghanaians to accept as honourable the Auditor-General’s finding that COVID-19-related payments totalling over GH₵543 million were made to various service providers outside of the Ghana Integrated Public Financial Management Regulations, 2019 (L.I. 2378)?” he quizzed.

He stressed that the government’s management of the COVID-19 funds could not be said to be honourable when the Auditor-General could not verify bills and validate dubious payments amounting to over GH₵37.6 million by the Ministry of Finance to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and private individual water providers under the ‘free water’ initiative.

Boris agitates and yells at those who “don’t know what they’re speaking about

When questioned about the Partygate affair, Boris Johnson lost his cool and yelled at the chairman of the committee, telling him that “those who allege that we were partying in lockdown just do not know what they are talking about.”

The Parliamentary Privileges Committee has previously questioned the former prime minister for a number of hours.

Although Mr. Johnson acknowledges deceiving Lawmakers, he will argue that he ‘didn’t mean to.’

In a 52-page paper turned in on Monday, he said that what he did at the time was what he considered to be correct. He is fighting to save his political career.

He was greeted with cheers as he arrived in parliament, before taking a seat alongside other MPs in front of the committee.

He was shown footage of his own words, as he spoke to MPs on multiple occasions during the pandemic and said time and time again there was ‘no party’ in Downing Street.

Privileges Committee chairwoman Harriet Harman set out what Boris will be questioned about and said they would be talking about the ‘rules and guidance’ around his breaches, and that he said he complied with both.

She said: ‘In our report of the 3rd of March we set out the main issues which we will be asking Mr Johnson about today.

‘We will be talking about rules and guidance since Mr Johnson told the house No 10 complied with both.

‘When we refer to rules we mean regulations laid down by the house which have the force of law and under which fixed penalty notices were issued.

‘Guidance is guidance issued by the government, for example when Mr Johnson was talking about ‘hands face space’, he was referring to the guidance on social distancing when he said space.

‘On the basis of information that is in the public domain and evidence the committee has received and in the context of what Mr Johnson said to the House of Commons, we will be establishing what rules and guidance relating to Covid were enforced at the relevant time, Mr Johnson’s knowledge of those rules and guidance, Mr Johnson’s attendance at or knowledge of gatherings that were not socially distanced and those for which fixed penalty notices were issued.’

Ms Harman rejected the former PM’s demand that the inquiry only considers his discussion of coronavirus guidance.

The Labour grandee said the MPs on the cross-party committee will leave their ‘party interests at the door of the committee room and conduct our work in the interests of the House’ as she dismissed claims of bias.

She insisted the committee is ‘not relying’ on evidence provided by the Sue Gray report, as allies of Mr Johnson claim the inquiry is a ‘witch hunt’ now that the civil servant is joining Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s office.

Ms Harman added: ‘We have not changed the rules of the procedure that is not within our remit, that is laid down by the House, we’re bound to follow them, that is not what we’ve done.’

    Downing Street partygate

She said the evidence raises ‘clear questions and this is Mr Johnson’s opportunity to give us his answers’ before asking him to take the oath.

He swore to tell the truth before issuing an apology and adding ‘hand on heart, I did not lie to the House’.

He started with an apology for illegal gatherings in Number 10 and said: ‘That was wrong, I bitterly regret it, I understand public anger.

‘I continue to apologise for what happened on my watch. I take full responsibility’ but he said ‘I hand on heart I did not lie to the House’

Boris said it was ‘nonsense’ to suggest that it should have been obvious to him that rules were being broken in No 10 because of the pictures of him at events.

To suggest there were ‘illicit events in No 10 while allowing these events to be immortalised by an official photographer is staggeringly implausible’.

Boris arriving ahead at parliament earlier today.

He said: ‘It seems to be the view of the committee and sadly many members of the public that they show me attending rule-breaking parties where no one was social distancing. They show nothing of the kind.

‘They show me giving a few words of thanks at a work event for a departing colleague. They show me with my red box passing on the way to another meeting or heading back into my flat to carry on working, often late into the night.

‘They show a few people standing together – as permitted by the guidance – where full social distancing is not possible and where mitigating measures are taken.

‘They show events which I was never fined for attending.’

Boris Johnson suggested that if it should have been obvious to him that rules were being broken, it should also have been apparent to current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

‘If it was obvious to me that these events were contrary to the guidance and the rules, then it must have been equally obvious to dozens of others, including the most senior officials in the country, all of them – like me – responsible for drawing up the rules.

Mr Johnson will appear live on TV later this afternoon.

‘And it must have been obvious to others in the building including the current Prime Minister.’

He said he does not think it ‘can seriously mean’ to accuse him of lying.

He said: ‘If it was obvious to me that these events were contrary to the guidance and to the rules then it must have been equally obvious to the dozens of others including the most senior officials in the country.’

He added it ‘must have been obvious to others in the building including the current Prime Minister’.

Mr Johnson said the ‘overwhelming evidence’ the committee has assembled is ‘that these individuals believed that the rules and the guidance were being complied with’.

He referred to the ‘total silence’ of any written or electronic record of concerns people wanted to raise with him and said the committee did not have evidence of any emails or WhatsApp messages that show he was warned about rule breaking before he made statements to the House of Commons.

‘You haven’t got any such evidence because that never happened,’ he said.

‘You are not only accusing me of lying, you are accusing all those civil servants, advisers, MPs, of lying about what they believed at the time to be going on, and as far as I know you’re not giving any of them the chance to explain themselves with their own oral evidence.

‘I don’t think you seriously mean to accuse those individuals of lying and I don’t think you can seriously mean to accuse me of lying.’

Boris Johnson defended his attendance at some of the events covered by the inquiry.

He told the Privileges Committee: ‘I know you will point to the photos and then to the guidance and what I said, and you will say ‘it must have been obvious that the guidance was being breached’. But that is simply not true.

On June 19, 2020, Boris was joined by other members in the Cabinet Room in 10 Downing Street to celebrate his birthday.

‘My beliefs and my remarks to Parliament were indeed based on my knowledge of those events, but you have to understand how I saw them and what I saw during the period I was there.’

Referring to the leaving dos he attended, Mr Johnson said: ‘I know that people around the country will look at those events and think that they look like the very kind of events that we, or I, were forbidden to everyone else.

‘But I will believe until the day I die that it was my job to thank staff for what they had done, especially during a crisis like Covid, which kept coming back, which seemed to have no end and where people’s morale did, I’m afraid, begin to sink.

‘But never mind what I think, the more important point is that the police agreed – they didn’t find that my attendance at any of these farewell gatherings was against the rules.’

Social distancing was not ‘necessary or possible’ in Downing Street due to the working conditions in the ‘cramped’ 18th-century townhouse, Boris Johnson said.

The former prime minister said his comments that Covid guidance was followed in No 10 was based on ‘my understanding of the rules and the guidance’.

He told the Privileges Committee: ‘That did not mean that I believed that social distancing was complied with perfectly. That is because I and others in the building did not think it necessary or possible to have a two-metre, or one-metre after June 24, 2020, electrified forcefield around every human being.

‘Indeed that is emphatically not what the guidance proscribes.

‘It specifically says that social distancing should be maintained where possible, having regard to the work environment.

‘It was clear that in No 10 we had real difficulties in both working efficiently and at speed and in maintaining perfect social distancing.

‘It is a cramped, narrow, 18th century townhouse. We had no choice but to meet day in, day out, seven days a week in an unrelenting battle against Covid.’

Giving an account of the birthday party for which he was fined, Boris Johnson told MPs: ‘It never occurred to me – or I think the current Prime Minister – at the time that the event was not in compliance with the rules and the guidance.

‘At about 2.22pm on June 19, 2020 I went into the Cabinet Room where I worked after getting back from a long external visit.

‘I stood at my desk – briefly – before another Covid meeting began and had a kind of salad.

‘A number of officials came in to wish me a happy birthday. No one sang, the famous Union Jack cake remained in its Tupperware box, unnoticed by me, and was later discovered and eaten by my private secretaries.’

A ‘slightly exaggerated’ version of the event was briefed to The Times ‘with singing and cake eating’ and yet nothing untoward was detected ‘either by the reporter or by millions of eagle-eyed readers’.

That meant that when he addressed MPs ‘it did not for one second occur to me that this event, the one event for which I was fined, would later be found to be somehow against the rules’.

‘And the same goes for all the events I attended.’

Boris Johnson said it was ‘important’ for him to attend the leaving do of his former director of communications Lee Cain because it could have been a ‘potentially acrimonious’ moment.

Asked about a gathering on November 13, 2020, in which the former prime minister is seen in a photograph giving a toast, he told the Privileges Committee: ‘This meeting happened on an impromptu basis, it had to happen.

‘It happened because on November 13 two senior members… people will ask why was this happening, why was it necessary?

‘It was necessary because two senior members of staff, the effective chief of staff and director of communications had both left the building, or were about to leave the building in pretty acrimonious circumstances – or what were potentially acrimonious circumstances.

‘It was important for me to be there and to give reassurance.’

Mr Johnson highlighted that he was not fined by the Metropolitan Police for attending the event in No 10 and that the force ‘agreed it was a work-related event’.

‘I believe it was absolutely essential for work purposes,’ he added.

Asked whether he thought social distancing was being followed in the image of the gathering, he replied: ‘I believe that the guidance is being complied with.’

Tory MP Sir Bernard Jenkin told Boris Johnson the coronavirus guidance ‘does not say you can have a thank you party’.

Mr Johnson said: ‘I believed that this event was not only reasonably necessary but it was essential for work purposes.’

Lee Cain and Dominic Cummings had left their jobs ‘in very, very difficult and challenging circumstances’, and ‘it was necessary to steady the ship, it was necessary to show that there was no rancour, the business of the Government was being carried on – that’s what we had to do, that’s what I had to do’.

The former Conservative Party leader said he thought it ‘unlikely’ he, as claimed by an unnamed No 10 official, made a joke about a leaving-do being ‘probably the most unsocially distanced gathering in the UK right now’.

Boris Johnson, asked about the remarks he was alleged to have made on November 27 2020, told the Privileges Committee: ‘I don’t remember saying those words.

‘I think it unlikely that I would have said those words given what I have had to say to the committee just now about my memory of the event.

‘My visual memory of the event was that it was much more, as Cleo Watson describes, it was a clutch of people around that table … I don’t remember people being four or five deep.’

Tory MP Sir Bernard Jenkin intervened as Mr Johnson looked to go on, saying: ‘I’m sorry, you are giving very long answers and it is taking longer than we need.

‘You are repeating yourself quite a lot. Can we just get on with the questions? Thank you very much.’

Boris Johnson was asked why he believed his June 19 2020 birthday party was within the rules, given his wife Carrie and interior designer Lulu Lytle were present.

Labour MP Yvonne Fovargue asked: ‘At least two people attended who were not work colleagues, why did you think this was reasonably necessary for work purposes, as required by the rules at the time?’

The former prime minister said: ‘I thought it was reasonably necessary for work purposes because I was standing at my desk, surrounded by officials who had been asked to come and wish me a happy birthday – I’d only recently recovered from an illness, from Covid, and it seemed to me to be a perfectly proper thing to do.

‘We were about to have another meeting and they were very largely the same officials.’

Ms Fovargue said: ‘Presumably your wife and the contractor were not attending that meeting.’

On Monday the group slammed his so-called ‘deadly dossier’ and said it contained ‘no new documentary evidence.’

He called the inquiry’s allegation ‘illogical’, arguing that some of those who attended the events ‘wished me ill and would denounce me if I concealed the truth’.

He wrote that it was ‘Far from achieving a ‘cover-up’. He said: ‘I would have known that any deception on my part would lead to instant exposure. This would have been senseless and immediately self-defeating.’

He said it was ‘implausible’ that he would have known the parties photographed and ‘immortalised’ by his official photographer were rule-breaking.

Boris had a spring in his step as he was seen ahead of the meeting.

The only evidence that he intentionally misled the Commons is from the ‘discredited Dominic Cummings’, and that Cummings’ assertions are not ‘supported by any documentation’, Mr Johnson said.

In his evidence he accepts he misled the House of Commons when he said lockdown rules had been followed in No 10 but insisted the statements were made ‘in good faith’.

Further today Mr Johnson’s 110-page bundle of evidence was also released, and it showed what his lawyers had been fighting to get put into the document.

In the evidence, his top aide, Martin Reynolds, said Boris ignored his advice to change his line in parliament over whether he had broken his own Covid guidance.

The PM grabbed his rucksack as he left his London home this morning.

In written evidence to the Privileges Committee, Mr Reynolds said: ‘I do recall asking the then prime minister about the line proposed for PMQs on December 7 suggesting that all rules and guidance had been followed.

‘He did not welcome the interruption but told me that he had received reassurances that the comms event was within the rules.

‘I accepted this but questioned whether it was realistic to argue that all guidance had been followed at all times, given the nature of the working environment in No 10. He agreed to delete the reference to guidance.’

In the pages of submitted evidence Mr Reynolds expressed further regret at his ‘bring your own booze’ party invite.

He said: ‘With the benefit of hindsight, the language used was totally inappropriate and gave a misleading impression of the nature of the event.

‘It was an event held because staff needed a morale boost after an extremely difficult period when all sorts of tensions had begun to surface and I hoped that being thanked by the PM and talking to each other might strengthen their sense of being part of one team.

‘The event was not a party in any normal sense of the word.’

Despite resistance from Boris and Truss, the Commons votes in favor of Rishi’s Brexit plan

In spite of opposition from some of his own MPs and the DUP, Rishi Sunak has succeeded in getting support from the Commons for a portion of his proposed plan on post-Brexit trading arrangements for Northern Ireland.

Regulations to put the Stormont brake component of the Windsor Framework into effect were approved by MPs by a vote of 515 to 29, with a majority of 486.

Almost 20 of the prime minister’s backbenchers, including Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, the two previous prime ministers, rebelled against him.

Additionally, the Conservative MPs’ European Research Group (ERG) announced it was “highly advising” that its members oppose the legislation.

Rishi Sunak wins key vote on post-Brexit deal

Labour offered its backing though, with Keir Starmer previously saying the agreement ‘will allow us to move forward as a country’.

The brake mechanism would allow a minority of MLAs in the Stormont Assembly to formally flag concerns about the imposition of new EU laws in Northern Ireland – a move that could see the UK Government veto their introduction in the region.

Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris, ahead of the vote, told MPs: ‘Without this measure, Northern Ireland would continue to have full and automatic dynamic alignment with EU goods rules with no say for the Northern Ireland Assembly and no veto for amending or replacing those measures.

‘That is an intolerable situation and I urge all MPs to vote to end that full and automatic dynamic alignment.’

Mr Heaton-Harris said the EU could initiate a dispute if it believed the UK had improperly used the brake, and The European Court of Justice would have no role in resolving that dispute.

But DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson said he cannot commit his party ‘will restore the political institutions’ in Northern Ireland as a result of the deal.

The DUP is currently blocking devolution at Stormont in protest at the terms of the post-Brexit Northern Ireland Protocol.

The protocol was designed to prevent a hardening of the land border on the island of Ireland and moved regulatory and customs checks to the Irish Sea, creating economic barriers on the movement of goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The UK and EU agreed the framework as a way to cut the red tape created by the protocol.

On the day he faces a grilling from MPs over Partygate, Mr Johnson found time to release a statement saying the proposed agreement was ‘unacceptable’.

The former Tory leader, who struck the first Brexit deal in 2020, said: ‘The proposed arrangements would mean either that Northern Ireland remained captured by the EU legal order – and was increasingly divergent from the rest of the UK – or they would mean that the whole of the UK was unable properly to diverge and take advantage of Brexit.

‘That is not acceptable. I will be voting against the proposed arrangements today.

‘Instead, the best course of action is to proceed with the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill, and make sure that we take back control.’

Mr Truss’ spokesperson later confirmed she would also be voting against the Stormont brake section.

Downing Street declined to say whether Rishi Sunak was disappointed that his predecessors were opposing his deal, along with former Conservative Party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith.

She said Mr Sunak believes ‘this is the best deal for Northern Ireland, for the people of Northern Ireland’.

‘It ensures a smooth flow of trade internally within the UK, safeguards Northern Ireland’s place in the union and addresses the democratic deficit’, she added.

Asked if the British leader had spoken to his predecessors, she would not name individuals but said: ‘He has been engaging with colleagues from across the House on this matter.’

Ship flips over at a 45-degree angle, injuring 25 persons

A large ship that capsized in Edinburgh at a “45-degree angle” injured 25 persons.

In the Imperial Dock neighborhood of Leith, the ship fell loose from its holding, resulting in the transport of fifteen individuals to the hospital.

Ten other patients received on-site care before being released.

About 8.35 am, five ambulances, one air ambulance, and three trauma teams arrived on the scene.

The area has been warned to stay away from as numerous fire engines and Coastguard rescue teams assisted persons who were hurt there.

According to the ambulance service, four people went to Western General Hospital and 11 were brought to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The 75m ship was formerly owned by the estate of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and was placed into long-term moorage in 2020 as a result of ‘operation challenges’ during the Covid pandemic.

However the estate for Paul Allen confirmed to Metro.co.uk that the ship was sold last year.

The ship became dislodged from its holding.

A spokesperson said: ‘The vessel is no longer owned by the Estate of Paul G. Allen; it was sold last year.’

Before that, it was used to carry out deep-sea searches for shipwrecks and war graves at sea.

Jacquie Campbell, chief officer of acute services at NHS Lothian said: ‘We’re on standby to receive a number of patients at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh’s A&E department following a major incident at the Imperial Docks in Leith.

‘We have been reviewing the current capacity at RIE, with support from other sites, to prepare to accommodate these patients.

‘Given the expected pressure on the site, we urge people not to attend A&E at the RIE unless it’s an emergency.’

Edinburgh Councillor Adam McVey said that the ship had been dislodged from its holdings due to strong winds.

He Tweeted: ‘Emergency services are responding to a major incident at Leith docks- a ship has been dislodged from its holding in strong winds.

‘Terrifying for those on board, my thoughts are with those who’ve been injured & hope everyone recovers quickly. Please avoid area.’

Scottish Greens Lothian MSP Lorna Slater said: ‘My team and I are monitoring events very closely. Images of such a large ship in dry dock leaning at 45 degree angle is very concerning.

‘I understand that around 25 people have been injured in some way, with around 15 of them now in hospital. My thoughts are with them and others impacted by what must have been a terrifying experience.

‘Because of the nature of the incident there will clearly be a level of disruption for locals and for people travelling in and around the Leith area.

‘I would ask people to exercise patience and where they can seek alternative routes to allow first responders and other agencies to go about their work.

‘Our thanks go to the emergency services and other agencies who are working to deal with this and to assess the situation moving forward.’

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘Officers and emergency service colleagues are responding to an incident at Imperial Dock in Leith, Edinburgh, whereby a ship on dry dock has become dislodged from its holding.

‘Police were called to attend at around 8.35am on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 and officers remain at the scene. The public are asked to avoid the area to allow emergency service access.’

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed 11 patients have been taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and four to Western General Hospital. Others injured were treated at the scene.

They added: ‘We dispatched five ambulances, an air ambulance, three trauma teams, our special operations team, three paramedic response units and one patient transport vehicle.’

A Coastguard spokesman added: ‘HM Coastguard is currently assisting Police Scotland in responding to a major incident at Imperial Dry Dock in Edinburgh.

‘At around 9.30am, Coastguard rescue teams from Fisherrow, South Queensferry and Kinghorn were sent to the scene.

‘This is a multi-agency response, with the Scottish Ambulance Service and Scottish Fire and Rescue also in attendance.’

Putin’s nine-year “election fixer” passes away unexpectedly after surgery

After surgery, the man who oversaw Vladimir Putin‘s allegedly “fixed” elections for nine years passed quite unexpectedly.

The 70-year-old Vladimir Churov formerly served as the head of the Russian Central Election Commission.

During his tenure from 2007 to 2016, the opposition accused him of “election fraud” that favored Putin.

The president then personally designated him as a Russian ambassador at large.

Lawmaker Leonid Ivlev told news agency TASS: ‘It is sad news indeed.

‘[He died] after surgery in a hospital at 8am today.

‘[He] passed away after suffering a serious heart attack.’

He was writing a book on alleged US meddling in elections abroad.

He added Mr Churov had appeared ‘in good health’ up until today and had been discussing his future plans.

Mr Churov was seen as ‘doing bidding for the Kremlin’ to rig elections while also making them appear creditable.

A former Western diplomat in Moscow said: ‘Churov knew where the bodies were buried over election falsification which gave Putin a clear run, preventing opposition parties gaining a foothold.’

At the time of his death he was in the process of writing a book on alleged US meddling in elections abroad.

The eyes of the world have been on Russia this week after a pomp-filled state visit by Chinese president Xi Jinping.

He told Putin ‘change is coming’ as he left the Kremlin after the two leaders showcased their ‘no-limits friendship’ in front of the media.

Shaking hands as the Chinese president left the imperial palace, Xi said via an interpreter: ‘Change is coming that hasn’t happened in 100 years. And we are driving this change together.’

Putin replied: ‘I agree,’ before his counterpart bid him farewell, saying: ‘Please, take care, dear friend.’

Former student-sexting teacher is now employed by a university

At the University of Bristol, a teacher who was barred from the profession after sending sexually explicit texts to a youngster at a boys’ grammar school is currently employed.

After sharing images of meeting Prince William and Princess Kate during the royals’ official visit to the Islands of Scilly, Lindsey Bauer, 46, is now pursuing a Doctorate and working as a part-time university instructor.

Ms. Bauer was judged to have “abused her teaching position” while working at Colyton Grammar School in Exeter, according to the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA).

The allegations took place between 2018 and 2022 and included ‘making inappropriate advances, suggesting face-to-face meetings and communicating with the student without good reason on matters that did not relate to the curriculum’.

A teacher banned from the profession after sending sexual texts to a student at a boys' grammar school in Exeter is now working at the University of Bristol. Lindsey Bauer, who once shared pictures of meeting Prince William and Princess Kate in 2016 during an official visit by the royals to the Isles of Scilly is now studying for a PhD and teaching part-time at the university. The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA), which investigates complaints against teachers in schools, found that Ms Bauer had abused her teaching position during private communications with a student while at Colyton Grammar School in Exeter.

The TRA found that ‘Mrs Bauer was guilty of unacceptable professional conduct and conduct that may bring the profession into disrepute’.

The panel found that her communications with the student were ‘sexually motivated’.

Ms Bauer denied the actions were sexually motivated, but the panel stated the allegations were proven and recommended an ‘indefinite ban’.

In May last year, she was banned from teaching for at least five years by the TRA, but the report and outcome was only released on March 1 this year.

The ban does not cover work at universities.

A spokesperson for the University of Bristol said: ‘We can confirm that Lindsey Bauer has discussed the misconduct panel outcome with us.

‘She is a PhD student here and, as is common practice for postgraduate students, she also has a part-time teaching assistant role within the university.’

It was reported that Ms Bauer, an Oxford graduate, had successfully put a court order in place preventing certain information from being published, but that this was later overturned.

Colyton Grammar said that the investigation had been started by the school and that a former employee had received a prohibition order from the TRA.

  • We need a people-centered leader to build on Klutse Avedzi’s foundation – NDC’s Edem Agbana

We need a people-centered leader to build on Klutse Avedzi’s foundation – NDC’s Edem Agbana

The immediate past Deputy National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Edem Agbana has emphasized the need for delegates of the party in the Ketu North Constituency to elect a parliamentary candidate fit for the replacement of the incumbent Member of Parliament for the area, Kletus Avedzi.

According to him, it is more important that the party elects an individual capable of addressing the various issues confronting the area by building on successes of the incumbent MP and his predecessors.

“Skills, jobs, education, social and economic infrastructure, care of the vulnerable and aged, support for our farmers and traders are the basic things that we must tackle. To do all these, Ketu North deserves Visionary, Result-Oriented and People Centered Leader to build on the strong foundation of Hon. Dr James Klutse Avedzi and his predecessors,” he said.

Edem Agbana made this statement when he successfully filed his nomination to contest for the party’s parliamentary ticket in the Ketu North Constituency on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

Presenting his nomination forms endorsed by various party officials in line with the constitutional requirements of the party, the parliamentary candidate hopeful reiterated his motivation for joining the race.

According to Edem Agbana, his bid is largely motivated by the potential, productivity and passion of the people of Ketu North among other things.

Dr James Klutse Avedzi and his predecessors.

“I have said and I reiterate on the occasion of my filing that my vision for this bid is for the people, my people, the people of Ketu North,” he said.

While emphasizing the importance of the upcoming election in the overall quest of bringing development to the constituency, the parliamentary candidate hopeful also stressed the need for the NDC to galvanize votes in the 2024 presidential election adding that in him, the party has the right person to not only win the seat but also help attract votes for the presidential race.

“This election also importantly determines our party’s performance in the next election. Our aim is to increase our winning percentage from the 53.6% in 2020 to 85% in 2024. We need a youthful, credible, well-known, unifier, a mobilizer, someone who is accustomed to the mechanics of party mobilization and someone who has a track record of winning elections, and performing in office.

“I believe I have learnt, I have served and as one of your own, I have the goodwill and support to be the candidate who best represent this collective aim of ours.

“I present this form in the name of every one of you in Ketu North. That in me, you have a reliable voice, he added.

  • Boris Johnson swears in front of the Commons, “I didn’t lie to the House

Boris Johnson swears in front of the Commons, “I didn’t lie to the House

Parliament‘s interrogation of Boris Johnson about the Partygate incident has begun.

If he misled the government and attended several parties while the country was under lockdown, the former prime minister will be questioned for nearly four hours.

Mr. Johnson will explain his defense, claiming that even though he admits to deceiving MPs, he ‘didn’t mean to.’

His political career is in jeopardy, and in a 52-page document sent in on Monday, he said that what he did at the time was what he thought was proper.

She said the evidence raises ‘clear questions and this is Mr Johnson’s opportunity to give us his answers’ before asking him to take the oath.

He swore to tell the truth before issuing an apology and adding ‘hand on heart, I did not lie to the House’.

He cut a solemn figure as it got underway.

He started with an apology for illegal gatherings in Number 10 and said: ‘That was wrong, I bitterly regret it, I understand public anger.

‘I continue to apologise for what happened on my watch. I take full responsibility’ but he said ‘I hand on heart I did not lie to the House’

This afternoon he will face a live grilling by the cross-party group of MPs in a hearing that could decide his political fate.

On Monday the group slammed his so-called ‘deadly dossier’ and said it contained ‘no new documentary evidence.’

Mr Johnson will appear live on TV later this afternoon.

In the evidence his top aide, Martin Reynolds, said Boris ignored his advice to change his line in parliament over whether he had broken his own Covid guidance.

Otumfuo shakes Bawumia; photo warms hearts of many

A photo of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in a handshake with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has warmed the hearts of many Ghanaians.

On either end, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, command their shares of public admiration, though the former mostly outweighs the latter.

And even more recently, because of the impending political season the country is about to enter, news and stories about the vice president have taken on even more interest in the hearts and minds of many.

This is because Dr. Bawumia has been linked to the vacant position of flagbearer (presidential candidate) of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), especially since his president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is no longer going to be in the picture.

But then, there has yet to be any official announcement by the man himself on this new move, although several recent movements of the vice president point to those indications.

That aside, the Asantehene hosted the 2023 Akwasidae Festival over the past weekend in Kumasi.

In attendance were some of the crème de la crème of the country’s political, traditional and affluent class.

Sharing some of the photos from his attendance of the Akwasidae, the Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, posted a photo of the moment the vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, met with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in what appeared to have been a meeting right after the public ceremony.

The Weeknd is the world’s most popular artist – Guinness Book of Records

The Weeknd, who recently became the first artist to reach 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify, is statistically the world’s most popular musician, Guinness World Records said Monday.

No one else even comes close to the singer’s streaming success, according to Guinness World Records, which said the 33-year-old singer has set two world records for music streaming: He has the most monthly listeners on Spotify and he is the first artist to reach 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Spotify itself also noted the milestone last month, tweeting, “It’s official: On February 27, The Weeknd became the first artist in Spotify History to reach 100 Million monthly listeners.”

The recent surge in streams has been driven in part by the success of his “Die For You” remix featuring Ariana Grande, which went viral on TikTok.

The remixed track, the original version of which was released in 2016, also clinched the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 list earlier in March. It’s the seventh number-one hit for both Grande and The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye. It was the second time The Weeknd and Grande have teamed up for a remix that went to number one, after 2021’s “Save Your Tears” remix also shot up to the top of the chart, according to Billboard.

The Weeknd’s 2020 track “Blinding Lights” is the most streamed track on Spotify of all time, with more than 3.47 billion listens as of Monday, according to the music streaming platform. His song “Starboy” is also one of the most listened to songs of all time on Spotify.

The Weeknd is no stranger to Guinness World Records awards. He was awarded two certificates back in 2016: One for Spotify’s most streamed album in 2015 and the other for the most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 by a solo male artist.

Russians overheard finding a downed US drone by amateur radio operators

It appears that amateur radio hobbyists have audio recordings of the Russian military attempting to recover a US espionage drone.

After the MQ-9 Reaper drone was shot down last Tuesday during an encounter with two Russian airplanes, they were keeping an eye on the public airwaves, according to the New York Times.

The radio intercept began around eight hours after the Black Sea collision, which was the first physical conflict between Russia and the US since the start of the invasion of Ukraine.

The clips reveal conversations between multiple Russian ships and aircraft over a four-hour period, discussing attempts to recover the drone’s engine casing, nose, wing and gas tank.

‘At this moment, we have brought up three parts of the frame,’ one unit code-named Apelsin (Orange) was heard saying. ‘Now I am proceeding toward the helicopter to search for more.’

There is a series of transmissions about the vessels’ declining fuel reserves and concerns about whether they will have enough to make it back to shore.

They then return to the Port of Sevastopol and one crew member indicates he passed an area called Striletska Bay.

The MQ-9 Reaper drone was found 60km off the coast of Sevastopol

This provides an insight into the units operating near the crash site, and indicates Russia’s continued use of open, unencrypted radio channels for operational communications in Ukraine.

A source close to the Russian defense ministry claimed Kremlin forces had found the downed drone at a depth of up to 2,953ft in the Black Sea.

While there is no indication sensitive US information was recovered, the intercepts contain special military words which are difficult to understand.

Pentagon officials said any sensitive information was wiped from the drone’s software.

‘Whatever is left of that floating will probably be flight control surfaces, that kind of thing — probably nothing of real intrinsic value to them in terms of re-engineering or anything like that,’ National Security Council spokesman John F. Kirby told CNN.

‘We’re not overly concerned about whatever they might get their hands on,’ he added.

Fizik research vessel pictured in Russia
Telegram channels indicate special purpose vessels Fizik (pictured in a file photo) and Professor Vodyanitskiy both sailed to or near the suspected location of the wreckage.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed on Friday two fighter pilots had been honored with state awards for preventing the US drone from entering Russian airspace.

They claimed there was no physical contact between the aircrafts, and that ‘quick maneuvering’ caused the drone to fall into ‘unguided flight with a loss of altitude’.

But this contradicted US claims that a Russian jet rammed the drone and damaged its propeller.

Moscow did not officially acknowledge a salvage operation, but Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the military would decide whether to attempt a recovery.

‘This is the prerogative of the military. If they deem it necessary to do that in the Black Sea for our interests and for our security, they will deal with that,’ Pescov said at a news briefing in Moscow last week.

The US has since resumed surveillance drone flights over the Black Sea region, officials said.

Funny Face narrates his encounter with a madman

Ghanaian comedian, Funny Face, revealed that during his stay at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, he had a life-changing encounter with a man who had been there for over six years.

In an interview with Berla Mundi on The Day Show, Funny Face disclosed that the man told him that his case was far worse than his.

This statement shocked the comedian, as he had been admitted to the hospital for threatening to harm his baby mama and others on social media.

“I encountered God when I went to psychiatry and a madman asked me, ‘Your case is worse than mine’. The madman who has been there for more than six years said my case is worse than his,” he stated.

According to the comedian, at first, he was in disbelief and couldn’t understand how his case could be worse than that of someone who had been living in a psychiatric hospital for six years.

However, the encounter with the man made him realize the severity of his actions and the need to change his ways.

“You said me?” My case is worse than yours. You have been here for six years, and I have been here for a week. That was when she said no: “No, I don’t belong here. I need to pray about it. “I need to work it out,” he said.

The comedian also mentioned that his experience at the hospital brought him closer to God and made him realize that he needed to pray and work on himself to become a better person.

Moreover, he acknowledged the support of his manager during this trying time, whose advice he had taken for granted before.

“Then again, my manager came through for me. He was the only one. I have seen it. The things he told me I took it for granted, but when life hit me, I began to understand the things he was saying,” he added.

Following an avalanche at a ski resort in Switzerland, an 18-year-old British man was murdered.

A second person who was also swept away in the catastrophe that happened yesterday afternoon in Meiringen is still being sought after by search crews.

Age, gender, and nationality of the missing person are unknown.

The male youngster who died, according to Swiss officials, was originally from England but had been residing in the canton of Bern.

He was skiing on the Gstelliwang, a slope at the foot of the Wellhorn in the Bernese Alps which has a height of more than 2,100m.

The disaster struck the area at around 4.25pm, the Bern cantonal police said.

The 18-year-old and missing person were both part of a larger skiing group, they added, and the avalanche was triggered as the pair travelled down the slope.

Swiss Alpine Rescue and several helicopters were immediately deployed, but were only able to recover the teenager’s body.

  • How Gold Coast was named after the Ghana Empire

How Gold Coast was named after the Ghana Empire

Did you know that the name Ghana, which we proudly bear today, has a rich and fascinating history? Before we became Ghana, our beloved country was known as Gold Coast.

But have you ever wondered how this name came about? Well, let’s dive into the story of our country’s name and take a journey through time.

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to set foot on the land in the 15th century, and upon their arrival, they discovered so much gold between the rivers Ankobra and the Volta that they named the area “da Mina,” meaning “The Mine.” This was the beginning of the Gold Coast.

But how did the Gold Coast become Ghana? The Republic of Ghana was named after the medieval West African Ghana Empire.

This empire, also known as Wagadou or Awkar, was a West African empire based in the modern-day southeast of Mauritania and western Mali that existed from approximately 300 to 1100 CE. The empire was called the Ghana Empire after the title of its Emperor, Ghana.

The empire had significant power, wealth, and territory, controlling territories in the area of the Sénégal River and east towards the Niger rivers, in modern-day Senegal, Mauritania, and Mali.

Although the ancient Ghana Empire was approximately 500 miles north and west of the modern state of Ghana, the people of the Gold Coast were believed to have historical ties to Ghana.

The first person to suggest this was Rev. J. B. Anaman in his book, The Gold Coast Guide, published in 1895. Lady Luggard, wife of the infamous Lord Luggard, also included the stories of the empires of Mali and Songhai in her book, “A Tropical Dependency,” which was used in Achimota in the 1920s.

At the time of his death, James Kwegir Aggrey was working on a major history thesis that would establish the historical connections between the people of the Gold Coast and Mali, Songhai, Egypt, and Abyssinia. As a result of his death, this was not published. Rev. W. T. Balmer, who used to teach at Mfantsipim, also wrote about this connection to the Ghana empire in 1926.

These findings aroused the interest of J. B. Danquah, who published his book, Akim-Abuakwa Handbook, in 1928, proposing that the territory should be called “Akanln” instead of Gold Coast. However, this drew sharp criticism, and he then suggested “Akan-Ga” as a replacement.

The newspaper, West Africa, criticized this, saying, “it appears Dr. Danquah’s view of nationhood does not extend to the non-Akan population of the Northern Territories.” Upon further deliberations, Danquah then suggested “New Ghana.”

Following the riots in 1948, some students and teachers from Mfantsipim and St. Augustine’s College protested for their release following the arrest of the UGCC leaders. Kwame Nkrumah founded Ghana National College for these students after dismissing them. At independence in 1957, the name Ghana was eventually adopted, and to quote Nkrumah, “we take pride in the name, not out of romanticism but as an inspiration for the future.” This is how we became Ghanaians instead of Gold Coasters.

So there you have it, the fascinating story of how our country came to be called Ghana. It is a testament to our rich history and our connection to the ancient Ghana Empire.

  • Amerado is a lad; I didn’t respond to his diss song because he’s not on my level – Medikal

Amerado is a lad; I didn’t respond to his diss song because he’s not on my level – Medikal

Ghanaian rapper, Medikal, has opened up about why he did not respond to colleague rapper Amerado when he (Amerado) released a diss song for him in 2021.

He said he felt no need to respond because Amerado was not at his level.

“I think two years ago he ‘dissed’ me. He did a diss track for me and I didn’t  do anything to that lad. Then I felt like he had not reached my level for me to respond,” he said in an interview with TV3.

Ghana’s entertainment industry, arguably thrives on feuds (widely known as ‘beef’.) Some celebrities, especially musicians, dwell on these feuds to promote an upcoming (music) project, while others use the controversy surrounding these disputes to stay relevant.

Ghanaians for the past years have witnessed a number of  incidents where musicians hit the studios and record what they term “diss songs” targeted at a particular colleague in the industry. The other faction also responds with a diss song and the game continues till they decide it’s enough.

Amerado’s diss song to Medikal dubbed Indelible Flow

The likes of Shatta Wale, Yaa Pono, Samini, KK Fosu, Sarkodie have all had their turns recording diss tracks for colleagues. Sometimes, the feuding parties open up (though later) and confess that they planned the feuds.

However, Ghanaians were taken aback when Medikal remained silent even after Amerado, then a-not-so-old-face in the industry, mustered courage to record a diss song for Medikal.

The song, Indelible Flow, was released in 2021. Ghanaians found Medikal’s silence rather disturbing since Amerado really went hard on this song, per popular opinion.

Amerado’s diss song to Medikal dubbed Medikated Soap

But two years down the line, Medikal has revealed that he was unperturbed about neither the content of the song nor its owner, whom he referred to as a “lad.”

“We are not friends and I don’t have anything against him but then I did not respond to him because he was not my level. I’m known to be a person who speaks his mind but when it’s something that I’m not going to benefit from or get money from I’m not doing it,” he said.

“While it is obvious that the ruling party engaged in thuggery and electoral malpractice, we must not lose sight of the fact that we stood for what was right and.. just. It is deeply concerning that such tactics are still being used in our democracy, and we must continue to fight for a system where every vote counts and the will of the people is respected. That we refused to compromise our principles and values, even in the face of adversity.”

Church building totally burnt to ashes

Despite the efforts of nearly 150 firefighters, a church in New Jersey was completely destroyed by a terrible fire.

In Florence Township, New Jersey, a large fire broke out at the Fountain of Life Center church and Christian school on Monday evening as the sun was setting.

When the fire was discovered at 6 o’clock on Monday night, first responders quickly raised the alert to four.
By 7.30 p.m., local firemen sent a call for reinforcements from neighboring counties, and it was upgraded to the fifth alarm.

‘It was just the size of the building the amount of fire that was here – we had to switch our operation to a defensive operation,’ Florence Township Fire District Administrator Robert Tharp said.

The church, located about 30 miles northeast of Philadelphia, has a congregation of about 1,000 members. It is the center of a campus also houses a K-12 primary school called the Life Center Academy.

Firefighters were able to save the school, but classes were cancelled for the foreseeable future as firefighters continue to put out hot spots and assess the damage.

The Florence Fire Department reported they were still on the site as late as Tuesday afternoon.

No injuries were reported in the fire. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire.

Images from the aftermath show the completely burned-out remains of the megachurch within the 120,000-square-foot complex.

Senior Pastor Russell Hodgins called the fire a ‘devastating loss’ for his church.

The sanctuary’s just been completely burned,’ Hodgins told CBS Philadelphia. ‘The roof collapsing is a pretty embedded image in my mind.’

Despite the immediate damage, church leaders announced that services would still be held on the property next Sunday.

‘The church is not brick and mortar, the church is really the body of believers,’ Hodgins told the local station.

Kenyan “King Solomon” boasts about having 8 wives, 7 concubines and 107 children

Kenyan man, David Zakayo Kalukhana, a resident of Teresia Village located at the periphery of Kakamega County, has 107 offspring from his eight wives and seven concubines.

The 63-year-old, who hails from a village situated on the vast Nandi escarpment in Kakamega North sub-county, entered into his first marriage in 1987 but later decided to take on more partners.

“A head like mine cannot be managed by one woman. It is like a big sack of maize which has to be divided into smaller parts for ease of movement. I need many wives so that they can manage the amount of brains and ideas in my head. I am too smart for one wife,” Mr Kalukhana told the Sunday Nation.

Mr Zakayo’s Financial Status: Provision for Family

Kenyan man with 8 wives, 7 concubines and 107 children boasts

Although he has 107 children from his multiple wives and concubines, David Zakayo Kalukhana does not consider himself wealthy based on local standards.

He mentioned owning only a half-acre plot of land where he grows maize to feed his family and sugarcane. To provide for his large family, he undertakes menial jobs, such as landscaping activities.

His compound comprises three semi-permanent houses that have mud walls and iron sheet roofs. Despite the challenges he faces in providing for his extensive family, Mr Kalukhana remains resolute and compares himself to the biblical King Solomon, who had 700 wives and 300 concubines.

“I have wives in different places, including in the neighbouring Nandi County. When I’m not farming, I go out to do menial work, including constructing stone fences around people’s homes. The work is well-paying and it has helped me make some money to keep my family going. They will never sleep hungry as long as I’m alive,” said Mr Kalukhana.

    Motive for Marrying Multiple Wives

“When I married my first wife Jesca Asembo in 1987, I felt like she was not up to the task. I have added more but I still have the urge to add more. All my children of school going age attend school.

I toil daily to raise money to ensure they are in school to get an education for their future. I don’t believe in religion. I live my life through my own intervention because I am a genius,” he said.

    Jealousy Amongst Wives

The wives of David Zakayo Kalukhana, who belong to various age groups, work and dine together, sharing their meals. They also collaborate on household tasks and treat their husband with great reverence. In photographs, they are seen laughing and teasing each other while feeding each other joyfully.

According to one of his wives, Ms Asembo, she has never experienced any jealousy towards the other wives.

“I love my husband and that is all that matters. Even if he brings in additional wives, I will not be bothered because I understand him. He is a responsible man and whatever he does is always right because he takes his time to decide on what to do,” said Ms Asembo.

Dorine Kalukhana, Mr Kalukhana’s seventh wife, admitted to feeling envious when she first got married but eventually grew accustomed to the situation.

“Today, there is no jealousy. We all live in harmony and no woman feels jealous of the other. Our man treats us equally,” she said.

Teephlow is jealous of me – Medikal

Popular Ghanaian rapper, Medikal, has made a bold statement that he will not collaborate with fellow rapper Teephlow, citing envy and jealousy as the reasons behind his decision.

During an interview with Giovani on 3FMDrive, Medikal stated, “I don’t see myself doing music with Teephlow. He is envious of me, he is jealous of me, he hates me, he doesn’t wish me well, and he wishes to be in my position.”

The two rappers were reportedly close friends in the past, but their friendship took a hit when Teephlow commented on the Covid-19 pandemic.

In an interview, Teephlow indirectly accused Medikal of engaging in illegal activities by saying, “which artiste can play shows and get money to buy a range over?”

Furthermore, Medikal mentioned that he was hurt by his comment and questioned Teephlow’s intentions, wanting to know how a good friend could turn into a foe.

While some fans believe that Teephlow is jealous of Medikal’s success, others are criticizing Medikal for holding a grudge and refusing to collaborate based on personal issues.

  • Shatta Wale gives conditions for a comeback in VGMA

Shatta Wale gives conditions for a comeback in VGMA

Dancehall musician, Shatta Wale, has established that until the board and organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) take the first step in making amends, he will not be a part of any of their initiatives.

After the 2-year-old ban placed on Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy following their brawl at the 2019 VGMAs was lifted, Shatta has not been a part of the event as he announced he had boycotted the award scheme.

Stonebwoy, on the other hand, had been nominated for consequent editions and even won the Reggae Dancehall song of the Year at the 23rd VGMAs after he showed interest in the scheme.

Shatta insists that he will only participate in the awards scheme only if he and the organizers reach a consensus.

His comments are in reaction to his absence from the 2024 VGMAs nominees list which has since stirred conversations on social media.

Describing the VGMAs as his ex-girlfriend, Shatta said the board should have a nicer approach so they can negotiate and come to agreeable terms for him to join.

“VGMA is my ex-girlfriend, anytime they want to come back I am here. I feel because they are the ones organizing this and there should be a nice approach. They should also find someone from the office to come and invite me to come on board and it will be beautiful. We should take this like that…we have to understand that united we stand divided we fall,” he stated in an interview with Hitz FM.

The Dancehall artiste emphasized that he doesn’t regard the scheme as an enemy, and as such, he believes that both parties can create something magical when his proposed steps are considered.

“I don’t have VGMA at heart and I don’t have any enemy there. It’s just that things happen and we move on. We have to understand that united we stand divided we fall,” he said.

Bodyguard of Kim Jong-un likely to ‘face execution’ for allowing him to go out in a stained jacket

A bodyguard is likely to face slaughter by firing squad for letting North Korean President Kim Jong-un to leave home with white stains on his coat.

Last week, as the supreme leader was scrutinizing a missile launch, propaganda photos caught an irregularity.

Kim’s employees feared they would be penalised for failing to uphold his dignity because his jacket appeared to be covered in white stains.

Michael Madden, a North Korean specialist, said individuals accountable could face promotions or hard labor, but even execution could not be ruled out.

‘But if he got angry about this then a few people will probably get sent to a construction site or a farm for a month or two to think about this minor transgression.’

He added: ‘It is not unheard of to be sent away for execution.

‘There are accounts of the leader’s father, Kim Jong-il, having bodyguards and members of his personal staff sent to prisons and in one case to the firing squad for very minor offenses.

  • One of Akufo-Addo’s biggest mistake is over borrowing – Prof Adei

One of Akufo-Addo’s biggest mistake is over borrowing – Prof Adei

Economist Stephen Adei says incessant borrowing without the capacity to repay is one of the most significant contributors to the country’s economic crisis.

The former Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Board Chairman insists this development is what has become an albatross around President Akufo-Addo’s neck.

“I think the biggest mistake they made is that they borrowed beyond our capacity to service it,” he said.

He made these comments on the sidelines of the Signature Market Pre-launch campaign at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Prof Adei explained that even though exogenous factors such as the coronavirus pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia war played a role, overborrowing is the final nail that threw it entirely out of gear.

“If you are a country and you borrow beyond your capacity, you will be in trouble, of course, COVID-19 came in, and the Russia-Ukraine [war]. But the reason why things got worse is because of these underlying mistakes they made and they must admit it”, Prof Adei explained.

He told pressmen that if this was not the case, “they won’t be going to IMF.”

“We have to learn and not repeat our mistakes by going on a borrowing spree”, he urged the government.

  • UG introduces Gender policy

    UG introduces Gender policy

In order to achieve maximum productivity, the University of Ghana has introduced a gender policy that aims to integrate the topic of gender equity in all university departments.

The policy will cover the university’s gender principles, which include issues concerning staff appointments and promotion, and students enrolment and retention as well as grievance procedures and processes for redress and monitoring and evaluation mechanisms among others.

The purpose of the policy is to address the issue of imbalance in the representation of females in the student population, teaching, administrative, technical and senior management position by providing equal opportunity to members and prospective members of the university community, regardless of sex.

Therefore, it would provide a framework document for achieving a gender equitable environment that engages both males and females in all critical spheres of decision-making.

It would also create an environment that values diverse perspectives on the basis of gender equality, harnesses potentials and is supportive of men and women’s diverse skills, perspectives and knowledge.

At the launch held recently in Accra, the Chancellor of the university, Mary Chinery-Hesse, underscored the importance for the university to have such a policy that was binding, and also In line with the national gender policy to ensure that all were treated equally both within the university and within the broader Ghanaian social space.

She, however, lamented that in spite of the progress being made in gender parity, the university still faced critical issues of gender imbalance, citing female participation in Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related programmes and the study of Information Technology (IT) as an example.

She said “the percentage of female students studying IT courses currently stands at just 20 per cent.

There is also the issue of the proportion of women in senior academic roles, and the voice of women in decision-making at all levels in the University,”

Mrs Chinery-Hesse, therefore, affirmed the university’s  commitment against all forms of gender based discrimination and the forging of an environment where everyone, regardless of their gender had equal opportunity for their growth, development and self-realisation.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, noted that as an institution committed to the realisation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 which focused on Gender Equality, the university had always, even before the launch of the policy, been working to create an environment free from bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

“It may interest you to know that the University of Ghana is the first university in Ghana to set up a Gender Centre (now the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy) way back in 2005.”

UG is also the first university in Ghana to develop a Sexual Harassment Policy, and today, the University is leading the charge as the first public University in Ghana to develop a Gender Policy,” she said.

Prof. Amfo was therefore hopeful that other tertiary institutions would emulate the university’s initiative to protect both men and women in the realisation of their goals and called on all stakeholders to work together for its success..
