NFA staff receives first pay after 2years – Juliet Asante

The Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante has mentioned some of the difficulties they went through during the incipient stage of the authority.

She told Kwame Dadzie, the host of Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z that principal among their challenges when the NFA Board was inaugurated in 2019, was funding.

According to the celebrated actress, she even had to run the activities of NFA from her house.

She said the workers at the NFA got paid for the first time about two years after they were employed.

Prior to that, she funded the operations of the authority through personal sources.

“Last year, I posted that I got paid for the first last year September and all my workers got paid for the time last year I think sometime June or so,” she said.

Asked if they got back pay for the work they had done in the previous months, she replied that “some have, some haven’t. It’s a conversation we are having with our employers. So some haven’t.”

Although she acknowledged the National Film Authority has made some strides since it was instituted, Juliet noted that funding still remains of their major setbacks.

Taking about the Film Development Fund, she said it was still in the offing.

“It is one of the things that is top on our agenda this year. Luckily, we finished most of the ground work that we need to do. We just finished working on the LI internally. So that is being looked at by the Board and the LI Committee, and then after that twill go through the process

Juliet said an account has been opened for the Film Fund.

The National Film Authority (NFA) was inaugurated by the President, Nana Akufo-Addo in 2019 as mandated by the Development and Classification Act 2016.

The NFA is tasked to evolve a dynamic, economically self-sustaining and culturally conscious film industry in the country in the national interest, and promote the creation of a conducive environment for the local production, distribution, exhibition and marketing of films.

It also aims at encouraging the use of films to project the identity and image of the Republic and its people within and outside the country;Bpromote and facilitate co-production between local and foreign producers, regulate foreign participation in the Ghanaian film industry, among others.

Banky W was cheated in the election – Daddy Freeze slams Obi’s supporters

Famous broadcaster and socialite Ifedayo Olarinde, a.k.a Daddy Freeze, has stated that Lagos State Eti-Osa Federal Constituency election was rigged against singer, Olubankole Wellington, known as Banky W to favour Attah Thaddeus.

Speaking during a live Instagram session, Daddy Freeze said Attah is not known by anyone, nor was his face on fliers like other candidates.

He further stated that the election was rigged in favour of the Labour Party’s candidate, hence, Peter Obi‘s supporters too should also accept defeat at the presidential level.

Some grand displays from the 66th Independence Day celebration in Ho

On March 6, 2023, Ghana celebrated its 66th Independence Day with a grand display of culture, showcasing the nation’s rich heritage and diversity in the Volta Region.

The event was held at Adaklu Park and was attended by dignitaries, government officials, and Ghanaians from all walks of life.

The cultural display was one of the most significant features of the event, and it included various performances, such as traditional dances, music, and poetry recitals.

The performances were a celebration of Ghana’s unique culture, which is made up of over 100 ethnic groups, each with its own customs, traditions, and language.

One of the highlights of the cultural display was the parade of traditional chiefs, who came dressed in their colourful regalia, representing their respective tribes.

The chiefs were accompanied by their entourage, who chanted traditional songs and played musical instruments.

Another notable cultural display was the fashion show, which showcased Ghana’s traditional clothing, such as woven Voltarian kente.

The fashion show featured both modern and traditional designs, highlighting the versatility and beauty of Ghanaian fashion.

Apart from the cultural display, the event also featured speeches from government officials and other dignitaries, who highlighted Ghana’s achievements in various sectors of the economy, such as education, health, and infrastructure development.

The speeches were aimed at inspiring Ghanaians to work together towards the country’s development.

  • Indian Wells preview: Djokovic absence opens up men’s draw

Indian Wells preview: Djokovic absence opens up men’s draw

Novak Djokovic’s absence from the Indian Wells Open has caused a stir in US politics, and on the tennis court it is hugely significant, too.

Sport was given a jolt three years ago when Indian Wells organisers cancelled the event on the eve of action getting under way, citing one local case of COVID-19.

At that point, on March 8, 2020, there had been more than 500 confirmed cases across the United States, with 21 deaths. Soon enough, events across the globe were being postponed or scrubbed.

Coronavirus travel restrictions prevented the unvaccinated Djokovic from taking part last year, and they will keep him away again this time, despite calls from two Florida senators for the jab requirement to be lifted by President Biden to allow the Serbian into the country.

With the world number one sidelined, Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz look likely challengers for the men’s title. There have been surprise champions in recent times, with Cameron Norrie winning in 2021 and Taylor Fritz carrying off the title 12 months ago, so it would be hasty to rule out something similar.

In the women’s event, there has not been a successful title defence since Martina Navratilova won in 1990 and 1991. That can partly be attributed to Serena and Venus Williams boycotting for over a decade at the peak of their powers after complaining of facing racial abuse, and in their absence no player stepped up to dominate.

Iga Swiatek triumphed in Indian Wells and Miami last season, racking up the ‘Sunshine Double’, and she starts as a strong favourite again, but defeat in the recent Dubai final to Barbora Krejcikova showed the 21-year-old rankings leader will not have everything her way this season.

First-round action gets under way on Wednesday, after two days of qualifying, and here Stats Perform, with Opta data, looks at what lies ahead.

After Norrie and Fritz, could there be another shock men’s winner?

Djokovic has won a joint-record five Indian Wells titles, but he last featured in 2019, when he lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber in round three.

Rafael Nadal is also absent this time with a hip injury, and with Roger Federer retired this will be the second Indian Wells main draw since 2000, after 2021, to feature none of the ATP Big Three.

The Big Three was a Big Four at one point, though, and Andy Murray will be competing. It is one of the two Masters 1000 tournaments Murray has never won, along with Monte Carlo, having triumphed at the other seven. Murray has the most match wins at Indian Wells among all men competing this time, having 28 to his name, two more than John Isner who sits next on the list.

No ATP player has a better win percentage at Indian Wells than Djokovic (84.7 per cent), who has won 50 of his 59 matches, while the now-retired Federer has appeared in the most finals (nine), also winning five times, so there is no doubt the field is missing its long-time classiest acts.

Fritz last year became the first men’s champion aged under 25 years old since Djokovic in 2011, and he was also the first American to take the men’s title since Andre Agassi beat Pete Sampras in the 2001 final.

Medvedev has won three consecutive tournaments in the lead-up this year, tearing to titles in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai, but the Russian has a disappointing record at Indian Wells, having yet to reach the quarter-finals in five visits.

Just four players this century, including Alcaraz last year, have reached the semi-final stage before turning 20, with Nadal, Djokovic and Murray the other three. Alcaraz is still only 19 but a shade older than Boris Becker when he was a 19-year-old champion in 1987, the youngest men’s winner.

Who else might come through? It feels like a free-for-all and Felix Auger-Aliassime will be hoping for a breakthrough tournament, with the Canadian being the only member of the current ATP top 10 to have never reached a final at ATP 1000 level. It has to happen sooner rather than later, surely.

Swiatek bids to lift curse of women’s champions

Ever since Navratilova’s two in a row, being a back-to-back champion at Indian Wells has been beyond all singles players on the WTA side.

Indeed, the only players to reach the final the year after their title run have been Lindsay Davenport (champion 1997, runner-up 1998) and Ana Ivanovic (champion 2008, runner-up 2009).

Nine women have won twice at Indian Wells, but none have managed three or more titles. The nine are: Steffi Graf, Mary Joe Fernandez, Navratilova, Daniela Hantuchova, Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka, Davenport and Maria Sharapova.

A Swiatek victory would make it a club of 10, but there is a club of one when it comes to players who have captured two titles without dropping a set in either trophy run. Sharapova is the only player to pull off that feat, with her 2006 and 2013 glory runs.

Among all women, Davenport has reached the most finals (six) and won the most matches (47), with Azarenka having the most wins among active WTA players (34).

Navratilova remains the oldest champion, having won aged 34 in 1991, while Martina Hingis and Serena Williams won as 17-year-olds in 1998 and 1999.

Shocks can happen: Bianca Andreescu took the title as a wildcard in 2019, while Jenny Byrne reached the final as a qualifier in 1989, the first year the women’s event was staged.

If there is to be a teenage women’s finalist this time, maybe it will be Coco Gauff. The American turns 19 midway through the tournament, on March 13, and has yet to reach a WTA 1000 final, although she got to the French Open title match last year, where Swiatek inflicted a heavy defeat.

Perhaps Aryna Sabalenka can reprise her Australian Open form, having won a first major in Melbourne. But Sabalenka’s record in Indian Wells is a rough one, with the Belarusian yet to go past the fourth round.

Strap in for a thrill ride. They all want to stop Swiatek, but if any player can defy history it might just be the Pole.

McIlroy applauds Kitayama as perseverance pays off in maiden PGA Tour victory

Rory McIlroy applauded Kurt Kitayama’s maiden PGA Tour victory after the pair were split by a single stroke at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The Northern Irishman tied for second alongside Harris English at eight under as Kitayama finally ended his runners-up hoodoo to claim victory at Bay Hill Club and Lodge.

After three near-misses on the tour in 2022, including a one-stroke loss to McIlroy at the CJ Cup, Kitayama’s victory saw him rewarded for his perseverance.

Speaking afterwards, McIlroy was happy to sing the praises of his fellow player, while acknowledging he was frustrated to have come up shy after just missing his putt at the final hole.

“I think [Kitayama] has been playing pretty well,” McIlroy said. “He’s sort of persevered and played wherever he could get starts.

“All of a sudden, he’s won one of the biggest events on the PGA Tour, so good for him.

“It’s disappointing. To play the final five holes in one over par, with this jam-packed leaderboard, isn’t really going to get it done.

“It was a battle all day. I felt like I hung in there really well and just came up one short in the end.”

Kitayama qualified for The Open with his victory and will hope to finally have an impact on a major. He was tied for 72nd last year.

“Last year was special, with it being at St Andrews,” he said. “The Open Championship is a really cool experience.

“I haven’t done well, but I’ve just got to try to keep getting myself back in it and keep getting better.”

  • Cummins staying in Sydney for Fourth India Test as Smith skippers Australia again

Cummins staying in Sydney for Fourth India Test as Smith skippers Australia again

Pat Cummins will not return to India before the fourth and final Test, meaning Steve Smith will again captain Australia in Ahmedabad.

Cummins headed back to Sydney after the second Test – a second defeat – to be with his mother, who is in palliative care with breast cancer.

Former skipper Smith led the Australia team in the absence of the regular captain and oversaw a dominant nine-wicket win in the third Test in Indore.

That victory secured Australia’s place in the World Test Championship final, but they need another result in the final match of the series to earn a draw.

Smith will again deputise for Cummins, Australia confirmed on Monday.

Cummins, who is also the ODI captain, has been included in Australia’s 50-over squad, with no decision yet made on his involvement in the white-ball series.

Fast bowler Jhye Richardson has withdrawn from that ODI series due to a hamstring injury with Nathan Ellis replacing him in the squad.

Groin issue forces Nortje out of South Africa’s Test squad

Anrich Nortje has been released from South Africa’s squad ahead of the second Test against West Indies due to a groin issue.

Paceman Nortje took 6-84 as the Proteas claimed an 87-run victory in the first Test of the two-match series at Centurion.

However, the 29-year-old will not feature at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg after he after experienced what South Africa described as “mild groin discomfort” during the first Test.

South Africa have not called up a replacement for Nortje, who has taken 70 wickets in the longest format since making his debut in October 2019.

The second Test starts on Wednesday, with three ODIs and as many T20Is to follow.

  • Russell claims Red Bull ‘should win every single race this year’

Russell claims Red Bull ‘should win every single race this year’

George Russell says Red Bull have got this year’s Formula 1 championship “sewn up” and declared “they should win every single this year” after dominating the season opener in Bahrain.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez claimed a comfortable one-two finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix having both started at the front of the grid.

The reigning world champion won by 11.987 seconds from his Red Bull team-mate, who was almost 40 seconds ahead of Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso who rounded out the podium.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said Red Bull were on a “different planet” after the race and felt his team would need to completely abandon its own cap concept.

Russell, who finished down in seventh, reiterated that sentiment, pointing to Red Bull’s probable dominance in 2023.

“Red Bull have got this championship sewn up,” Russell said. “I don’t think anyone will be fighting with them this year. They should win every single race this year, is my bet.

Chiellini dedicates maiden MLS goal to the late Astori

“They’ve got it easy at the moment. They can do what they like. They might not be on pole all the time because we know Ferrari are very competitive in qualifying but when it comes to race pace they’re in a very strong position.”

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner downplayed Russell’s comments, insisting it was far too early to be talking like that.

“Twenty-three races is a marathon,” Horner said. “It’s about being consistent over the campaign.

“Today was a great start. We full expect our rivals to come back hard in the future races.”

Wolff: Mercedes need ‘radical’ changes after ‘one of the worst days in racing’

Toto Wolff believes Mercedes need to make “radical” changes after suffering “one of the worst days in racing” at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Red Bull dominated in Sakhir on Sunday, Max Verstappen leading a one-two ahead of Sergio Perez.

Lewis Hamilton could only finish fifth and his Silver Arrows team-mate George Russell was seventh in the first race of 2023.

Seven-time F1 world champion Hamilton crossed the line 50.977 seconds after Verstappen, who is a strong favourite to clinch a third consecutive title.

Mercedes team principal Wolff knows his team are unable to challenge Red Bull and must go back to the drawing board.

Guardiola chimes on Newcastle time-wasting debate: ‘They will waste time, but yellow will be for Ederson’

“One of the worst days in racing,” Wolff told Sky Sports F1.

“Really not good at all, we were just lacking pace front, right, and centre.

“Red Bull is just on a different planet. That is what hurts because they are so far ahead, it reminds me of our best years because we just put a second on everybody else.

“That is the benchmark and we have to do one step after the other to come back and we can do that. We can, absolutely we can.

“I think it needs to be much more radical in the steps than hope for a three-tenths upgrade.”

The second race of the season will be staged in Saudi Arabia on March 19.

  • Guimaraes feeling more at home at Newcastle each day amid Real links

Guimaraes feeling more at home at Newcastle each day amid Real links

Bruno Guimaraes feels “at home” with Newcastle, despite reports of interest from European champions Real Madrid.

Guimaraes was Newcastle’s flagship signing in January 2022 in their first transfer window following the takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

The Brazil international had a huge impact and has impressed again this season in a team battling for Champions League qualification, having also reached the EFL Cup final.

This form is said to have caught the attention of LaLiga giants Madrid, but Guimaraes appears committed to Newcastle.

The ex-Lyon midfielder accepted the North East Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award on Sunday before posting on social media.

“When I said yes to Newcastle, I was sure I was choosing a big project,” Guimaraes wrote.

“From the bottom of my heart, I didn’t expect to live the wonderful things I’m living here.

“Respect for the team, love for the fans and each day feeling more at home.

“Thanks for everyone that made [it] possible to live all of this.”

Guimaraes has three goals in 18 league appearances this season, although he missed much of February through suspension.

Newcastle have suffered a dip in form since the Premier League restarted after the World Cup, with just two top-flight wins from their last nine games.

Back-to-back defeats against Liverpool and Manchester City, either side of their EFL Cup final loss to Manchester United, have stalled their momentum.

The Magpies will hope to return to winning ways when they face Wolves on Sunday.

  • Premier League ‘disappointed’ by decision not to allow concussion subs trial

Premier League ‘disappointed’ by decision not to allow concussion subs trial

The Premier League have been left “disappointed” by the decision to reject a trial period for introducing temporary substitutes for concussion.

The competition, alongside club doctors and the Professional Footballers’ Association, had petitioned the International Football Association Board on the matter.

But at its annual conference in London, IFAB elected not to immediately approve the idea, although it remains a possibility further down the line.

The decision has frustrated the Premier League, which, in a widely reported statement, expressed concerns.

“We cannot understand the basis for which it has not been approved,” the Premier League statement read.

“We are disappointed that a temporary concussion substitute trial was not approved considering all available scientific evidence and the overwhelming support from Premier League club doctors.

“While we note that a trial has not been dismissed, we remain convinced it should go ahead at the earliest possible opportunity in the interests of player welfare.”

Luis Diaz’s expected return from injury unknown but there’s hope – Klopp

Permanent substitutions can be made for players suffering a suspected concussion or head trauma during matches under the game’s current laws.

This is in contrast to other sports, such as American football, rugby union and rugby league, in which temporary changes can be made in order for players to undergo head injury assessments before they may be allowed to return to the field.

IFAB rejected an earlier attempt by the Premier League to table a trial for temporary concussion replacements back in January, as lawmakers continue to disagree over its viability.

  • Five shocking results in Premier League history

Five shocking results in Premier League history

The Premier League has played host to a number of crazy games through the years.

Fans have witnessed 11 goals in a single match, while some of the best teams in England have been on the wrong end of humiliating results.

When it comes to the most shocking, there is a catalogue of fixtures to consider from Manchester United’s 6-3 loss to Southampton in 1996 to Arsenal beating Tottenham 5-4 at White Hart Lane in 2004.

With the Premier League more competitive than ever, LiveScore have put together the top five most astonishing scorelines.

    1. Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal (2011)

Manchester United humiliated Arsenal at Old Trafford in 2011
Manchester United humiliated Arsenal at Old Trafford in 2011

United have been involved in several high-scoring fixtures in the Premier League era, including this one in August 2011.

After years of tense encounters between Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger’s opposing sides, this one turned out to be a thumping — the Gunners slumping to a 8-2 loss.

Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick to take home the match ball, Ashley Young grabbed himself a brace, while Nani, Danny Welbeck and Ji-sung Park were all on target on a bleak day for the visitors — their worst defeat since 1896.

The North Londoners were able to raid the transfer market — including the signing of now-manager Mikel Arteta — to get their season back on track, and went on to secure Champions League qualification.

Meanwhile, the hosts ultimately lost their title to rivals Manchester City on the final day.

    2. Aston Villa 7-2 Liverpool (2020)

Aston Villa stunned champions Liverpool at Villa Park in 2020
Aston Villa stunned champions Liverpool at Villa Park in 2020

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool came to Villa Park in October 2020 as defending Premier League champions but without a number of key players.

Aston Villa, buoyed by escaping relegation on the last day of the previous season, held no punches as they provided a scintillating attacking display.

Summer signing Ollie Watkins netted a first-half hat-trick, while Jack Grealish was involved in five goals — assisting three and netting two — as Dean Smith’s side completed a remarkable 7-2 win.

The Reds never managed to get their title defence back on course — ending the season in third — while Villa secured a mid-table finish, with star man Grealish earning a big-money move to Man City.

    3. Southampton 0-9 Leicester (2019)

Jamie Vardy scored a hat-trick in the 9-0 battering of Southampton
Jamie Vardy scored a hat-trick in the 9-0 battering of Southampton

Leicester equalled United’s record for the biggest Premier League victory, when they put nine past 10-man Southampton on a rainy night at St Mary’s in October 2019.

Both Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez recorded hat-tricks, with Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison all adding to the Saints’ woes.

Despite the loss, Ralph Hasenhuttl kept his job on the South Coast and even survived another 9-0 defeat at Old Trafford the following season.

Vardy meanwhile ended the season as the league’s top scorer, firing the Foxes to Europa League qualification.

    4. Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United (2023)

Manchester United shipped seven at old foes Liverpool
Manchester United shipped seven at old foes Liverpool

United’s 6-1 humbling to rivals City in 2011 will live long in the memory but Liverpool scoring six second-half goals to earn a historic win comes out on top.

Jurgen Klopp’s position as Kop chief had come into focus after a poor campaign, while Erik ten hag’s stock was on the rise.

But the Reds cast aside their struggles with an emphatic demolition that included braces from all of their new-look front three as Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez feasted on inept defending.

Roberto Firmino was also on target in a win that all-but ended talk of a United title charge and reminded Liverpool’s rivals that they are more than capable of dishing out a beating.

    5. Portsmouth 7-4 Reading (2007)

Portsmouth emerged victorious from the highest-scoring Premier League fixture
Portsmouth emerged victorious from the highest-scoring Premier League fixture

While other games selected in this list had great drama, none contained as many goals as this encounter at Fratton Park in September 2007.

Portsmouth and Reading played out an enthralling 11-goal thriller, with Benjani’s hat-trick the highlight of a topsy-turvy affair.

Six goals were scored in the final 20 minutes, with nine different players finding the back of the net.

The result proved detrimental for Reading, who went down that season, while Pompey finished a memorable campaign by lifting the FA Cup.

“That was the million dollar question,” said West End star John Owen-Jones, who is tackling his hardest role yet based on Paul Hollywood.

The stage production, which has been in the works for six years, is based on the TV series and shows the trials and tribulations of fictional contestants.

The final product, John claims, brought a tear to the real Paul Hollywood’s eye.

The Great British Bake Off – often just called Bake Off or GBBO – has been on our screens for 13 years and sees a group of amateur bakers compete against each other in a series of rounds, attempting to impress two judges with their baking skills.

The stage show adaptation opens in the West End on Monday, with Welsh musical theatre star John Owen-Jones playing judge Phil Hollinghurst – who happens to look exactly like the real Bake Off judge, Paul Hollywood.

Owen-Jones has played some of the most recognisable faces in theatre, including the phantom in Phantom of the Opera.

He said playing a character based on a real person, however, has been one of his biggest challenges yet.

“When you’re portraying somebody like that you have a responsibility,” he said.

“We gently tease and tweak the character to make it funnier and more theatrical but when I was asked to do it I thought this isn’t me at all – that was until I coloured my hair grey and I thought I looked a bit like him.

“When you are playing a real life person who is still alive you have to be very aware of their feelings and be careful, but Paul is a very lovely man.”Image caption,

Hollywood is known for the ‘Hollywood Handshake’ that he gives to bakers who win his approval – and John was very much hoping for a handshake too.

“Paul came to see the show and loved it,” said John.

“He gave me two handshakes after and is going to bring his mum back. He’d never even seen a musical before this.”

John didn’t tell the cast that Hollywood was in the audience, but he added: “I swear I saw him wipe away a tear at the end”.

“I’ve watched Bake Off from the very beginning so I felt like I knew Paul anyway”, he continued.

“I am good friends with Matt Lucas who was previously presenting the show so he gave me some good inside information.”

John, who was previously a butcher alongside his father and brother in Burry Port, Carmarthenshire, loves to cook and dabbles in baking off the stage too.

“I have grown up in the food industry and I played Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, who famously stole a loaf of bread.

“So it is nice to actually be in a role where we are creating bread.”

    Recipe for success?

John said the musical’s writers “have managed to achieve the impossible and create something special from a TV show”.

He said the core human stories are what makes it work so well on TV and the stage.

“It is one of those shows where you want people on it to do really well and to succeed and have a good time”, he added.

The real things – Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith on The Great British Bake Off

Hadyn Gwynne plays Pam Lee, a character based on the judge Dame Prue Leith. She researched the role by watching past episodes of GBBO and reading Leith’s autobiography.

“I decided not to be completely imitative with my voice because my singing voice is so different, but I did listen to her because she grew up in South Africa in Cape Town and I can really hear the South African rhythms in her voice,” she said.

“So I’ve fed that into it and other aspects of it without trying to do some complete impersonation.”

Husband and wife duo Jake Brunger and Pippa Cleary had the job of putting the dreams and dramas of the tent into song, which Pippa said they jumped at.

“It was quite an easy ‘oh my god yes’”, she said.

“We got the call in lockdown one where it was obviously quite a depressing time in theatre, so we were very feeling sorry for ourselves.

“We loved Bake Off already, have been fans of the show for years and years so we were very excited.”

Lockdown research involved a lot of Bake Off programme watching and cake sampling.

The married writing team say the key to success was eating a lot of cake when researching

Pippa said while the contestants are not based on real life, they have “sprinkled” in references and stories that might be familiar.

“We wanted this to have real heart as it’s not a parody – it’s a proper musical”, she said.

Jake said the biggest part of the process was figuring out how to do the judges.

“We tried to so many different versions over many different iterations, whilst sticking as close as you can to what the people at home know and love”, said Jake.

“But we’ve called them Pam Lee and Phil Hollinghurst. So the initials and the syllables are the same – but other than that, we can’t get sued. I hope.”

Gary Rossington: Lynyrd Skynyrd’s last founding member dies aged 71

Guitarist Gary Rossington, the last remaining original member of US rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, has died at the age of 71.

One of the band’s founding members, he appeared on all of their albums and co-wrote the 1974 hit Sweet Home Alabama.

He was also one of the survivors of a 1977 plane crash that killed several of his bandmates.

Although he had suffered heart problems in recent years, Rossington had been playing shows as recently as February.

A statement on the band’s Facebook page said: “It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today.

“Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does.”

No cause of death was given, but Rossington had heart surgery in 2021, according to a post from the band at the time.

Lynyrd Skynyrd in the studio recording their first album
Image caption, Lynyrd Skynyrd in the studio recording their first album

Rossington was born in 1951 in Florida, founding the first iteration of Lynyrd Skynyrd – called Me, You, and Him – in 1964 with drummer Bob Burns and bassist Larry Junstrom.

They added singer Ronnie Van Zant, who played on a rival baseball team, later that summer, after a game turned into a jam session.

They settled on the name Lynyrd Skynyrd – a dig at their high school gym teacher, who was notorious for punishing students with long hair.

    Free Bird

The band’s rebellious blues-rock earned them a fearsome live reputation in America’s southern states. Their debut album, titled Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd, included the nine minute epic Free Bird – which featured Rossington’s distinctive slide guitar work.

“We always said we had a lot of balls back then, or gumption, whatever you call it, for playing a song that long,” the musician said in an interview with Guitar World.

“Singles are only two, three minutes at the most, and five is lucky. Free Bird was nine minutes. They said, ‘Nobody will ever play that song. You guys are crazy’.”

But an edited version of the track became a top 20 hit in the US and, after touring with The Who, Skynyrd won a devoted following.Figure caption,

In 1974, Sweet Home Alabama – a withering response to Neil Young’s Southern Man – gave the band their only UK hit, charting at number 31.

Its popularity has endured, and it is the UK’s most-streamed track from 1974.

Rossington co-wrote several more of Skynyrd’s most-loved songs, including I Ain’t The One, Things Goin’ On, Don’t Ask Me No Questions and Gimme Back My Bullets.

He also inspired Van Zant to write That Smell – a warning about the band’s hedonistic lifestyle, penned after Rossington drove his Ford Torino into a tree while drunk and on drugs.

The lyrics cautioned that “tomorrow might not be here for you” and “the smell of death surrounds you”.

Eerily, three days after it was released, a plane carrying the band between shows crashed in Mississippi, killing Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister and backing singer Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick and both pilots.

Twenty people survived, including Rossington, who was knocked unconscious and woke up with the plane’s door on top of him.

“I’ve talked about it here and there, but I don’t like to,” Rossington told Rolling Stone in 2006.

“It was a devastating thing. You can’t just talk about it real casual and not have feelings about it.”

    Lynyrd Skynyrd
Image caption, Lynyrd Skynyrd did not perform for 10 years after the plane crash that claimed several members’ lives

The surviving members decided not to continue after the tragedy. Rossington, who was severely injured, had to learn to play again with steel rods in his arm.

He formed a new group, The Rossington Collins Band, with several former bandmates in the 1980s, before Lynyrd Skynyrd reformed in 1987 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the crash, with Van Zant’s younger brother Johnny on lead vocals.

The band kept going, recording nine studio albums and churning through almost 25 members, as well as being inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2010.

They were also one of the acts who took to the stage at the 2016 Republican Convention, where Donald Trump was chosen as the party’s Presidential Candidate.

    ‘So much joy’

Fellow musicians paid tribute to the guitarist. Metallica frontman James Hetfield thanked Rossington for “bringing me so much joy with your guitar playing and songwriting in one of my all time favourite bands”.

Country star Travis Tritt said he was “heartbroken”, adding: “Gary was not only a friend, but a collaborator that wrote songs with me and played guitar with me in studio recordings and onstage so many times. RIP.”

“The last of the original Free Birds has flown home,” said The Charlie Daniels Band on Instagram.

In a post on Facebook, former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson detailed his friendship with Rossington, recalling: “It seemed Gary kept his world small to the outside world but he always let me in it and trusted me as a music buddy…

“Prayers and condolences to his family, friends & band. He and his legendary guitar work will be missed by us all.”

Oscars 2023: Tackling male grief with gallows humour in An Irish Goodbye

It’s safe to say that actor James Martin is looking forward to his upcoming trip to Hollywood.

The star of An Irish Goodbye, the short film that has already won a Bafta and is now gunning for an Oscar, has an extra reason to celebrate. Sunday’s ceremony falls on his birthday.

“The leopard-skin jacket is coming out!” he says.

“I would love to meet Tom Cruise. His movie Top Gun was fantastic. I would love to meet Robert De Niro as we have something in common. My name is actually Robert James so it would be nice to meet someone who has the same name. We’re both actors and we can both be grumpy on set, so maybe it’s a family thing!”

Martin, who has also starred in BBC One film Ups and Downs and ITV’s Marcella, plays Lorcan in Ross White and Tom Berkeley’s film about two estranged brothers thrown together again after their mother’s untimely death.

Younger brother Lorcan lives and works on the family farm in Northern Ireland but with their mother (Michelle Fairley) gone, older brother Turlough (Seamus O’Hara) returns from London to announce that Lorcan – who has Down’s syndrome – will have to move in with their aunt. Lorcan is distinctly unimpressed with the idea.

“Everyone wants to be independent, I’m very independent of my folks,” Martin says.

“It’s very important [to show what people with learning disabilities can do]. It’s not often you get your own part on a show if you have Down’s syndrome. But never judge a book by its cover.

“Lorcan’s very independent but the love and the hate and the emotion towards his brother is fantastic. It’s good to have that special bond. If it wasn’t for that special bond
he’d just look at him (Turlough) as a carer.”

Tom Berkeley, Seamus O'Hara, James Martin and Ross White with their Bafta award for best British short film
Image caption, (Left to right) Tom Berkeley, Seamus O’Hara, James Martin and Ross White celebrated their Bafta win last month

White says the idea about a homecoming first began to germinate after he and Berkeley made a big life decision a few years ago.

“Tom and I met about 10 years ago when we trained as actors, we were living in London and writing plays as well acting.

“As our careers went on, we were writing more and more and acting less. In 2019, we made this big decision to leave London, to go back to our respective home towns, Belfast for myself and Gloucester for Tom, and just write full-time and move from writing for theatre into writing for screen.

“At that time we were thinking a lot about the idea of having left home, and then returning back home and it feeling a little bit like, ‘Are you from that place again?’”

But they needed a narrative, which came by chance when Berkeley attended a football match.

“I just happened to see a couple of brothers who were sat a few rows ahead of me watching the game, and the younger brother, much like in our story, had Down’s syndrome,” he tells me.

“There was an interesting juxtaposition between what was a very typically ferocious, brotherly kind of relationship, quite combative, as they were watching the game. They were hurling abuse at each other! And then… there was this other added layer of responsibility that was there between them as well, which I found quite compelling. There was just something really poignant about the relationship.”

Berkeley explains that it got them thinking about how people deal with grief in different ways.

Seamus O'Hara, Paddy Jenkins (Father O'Shea) and James Martin
Image caption, The brothers disagree over Lorcan’s future

“It was the idea of two people who see the world very differently and processed emotions very differently. The older brother – stoic, a bit repressed, slightly cynical. And then the younger brother, who wears his heart on his sleeve and has this superhuman capacity for empathy.

“We thought it would be really interesting to see those two opposites go through the process of grief together.”

While part of the storyline is linked to Lorcan having a learning disability and needing support after the death of his mum, White and Berkeley were keen not to make that the sole focus.

“We spoke about the idea of the character having Down’s syndrome… once, and then we just didn’t really speak about it that much, because there were so many other factors of that character that were more interesting,” says White.

“It wasn’t at the forefront for us… and meeting James as an actor, you see the the multi-faceted sides of his personality, and actually the Down’s syndrome is way down the list of interesting things about James. He’s a natural comedian. He’s charismatic.

“With representation, it’s not enough just to slap somebody in the thing and say we’ve done our job. The role has to be meaningful.”

Berkeley adds: “Lorcan has the agency of his own story, he’s not orbiting around the other characters. He drives the plot.”

The black comedy has generally been given a warm reception, with Amano Miura from Dublin’s EPIC: The Irish Emigration Museum, writing: “The dynamic, hilarious, and heart-warming relationship between brothers confronts the audience with existential questions about what really matters to us and where we really call home.”

Rukayat Moibi from MySohoTimes wrote: “An Irish Goodbye is an ambitious picture that, in a satisfying and heart-warming sense, almost feels as if it could be outside of the short film genre.”

A rollercoaster of emotion, the film sends you lurching from tears of sadness one minute to tears of laughter the next.

    Seamus O'Hara and James Martin

White explains: “There’s the kind of space between the tragedy and the comedy that feels like the truth in the middle.

“Coming from Belfast obviously there’s this kind of gallows humour we’ve got with coping with adversity, and that felt like a very specifically Northern Irish thing in that way.

“It’s also quite a male thing as well,” adds Berkeley.

Their previous short film Roy starred David Bradley as an elderly widower suffering from loneliness.

“Both films are about men struggling or badly coping with with grief. And I suppose that’s something maybe we recognise in our own experience and from the chaps in our lives as well.”

An Irish Goodbye is available on Mubi.

  • Why Ghana holds a parade on Independence Day

Why Ghana holds a parade on Independence Day

Ghana on March 6 marks its Independence day. The day is in commemoration of Ghana proclaiming freedom from colonial rule.

After about 83 years of being ruled by some European countries, Osaagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first Prime Minister and President in 1957, led the country to attain Independence from the British, the last country to colonise Ghana. Thus, making Ghana the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to break from colonial rule.

One common characteristic of Independence day celebration in Ghana is the Independence day parade and march past.

A parade is a public procession, especially one celebrating a special day or event, while a march past on the other hand is a formal march by troops past a saluting point at a review.

The parade and march past is often held at the selected venue for the National Independence Day celebration, where state dignitaries and citizens converge to celebrate the day.  The only year a march past was not held on Independence Day was in 2020, due to the outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

The country’s flag is hoisted, troops, civilians, students, public servants, march past the dais. The procession is mostly accompanied by rhythmic tunes from a brass band. The national anthem is also sung during this period.

Citizens who could not make it to the selected national venue, sometimes organise mini parades n their communities or in schools.

    History of the March past

The march past dates back to the 1900s when Ghana, then Gold Coast became a member of the British Empire.

It was held to mark Empire Day in all British colonies in honour of the birthday of Queen Victoria but has since the time of Independence remained one of the significant features of the country’s Independence day celebrations.

    What’s the significance?

For many, partaking in the march past gives a sense of patriotism. Others are also reminded of the struggles of our forefathers who risked their lives to save the country from our former slave/task masters.

Calls for it to be scrapped

Despite its significance, there have been calls for the 6th March Independence Day parade and march past to be scrapped; with many justifying their call with a claim that it has outlived its purpose.

According to a Graphic online report sighted by the Independent Ghana, some school authorities, in 2020, called for the march past to be cancelled from the list of activities to mark the day.

The report said a former headmaster, Mr. Wilberforce Azumah, argued against celebrating the day with a march past since the process was archaic and retrogressive in this era and averred that activities that would not have a toll on school children could be adopted.

He lamented over the fact that many schools devote lesson hours for rehearsals to impress the gathering and win awards, as part of the celebration.

In a latest development, actor turned politician John Dumelo has also called for the cancellation of the day, given the huge sums of money that has been invested into the parade and other activities to mark the day in the wake of the current economic crisis.

Nonetheless, the calls have been in vain since the event is being held in the Volta regional capital, Ho, on the theme: “Our Unity; Our Strength; Our Purpose.” In attendance are thousands of people including Heads of States from across the world.

Achipalago jumps on Zionfelix over car ownership

Ghanaian American-based socialite Achipalago recently called out blogger Zionfelix for misrepresenting his words in a video.

In a social media post, Achipalago expressed his frustration and disappointment at the blogger, labeling him a “fool” for misinterpreting that the car he drove was his.

The video in question features Achipalago sitting in a car and talking about the luxurious lifestyle of some Ghanaian celebrities.

In the video, Achipalago mentions a specific car and says, “This is what some of these celebrities are driving.” However, he never explicitly states that the car belongs to him.

Despite this, Zionfelix, interviewed YPee, a close associate of Achipalago, asking about the car he drove and a party he claimed to have organised for some bloggers, which somehow perplexed the artiste.

Reacting to the video, Achipalago was quick to address the situation, taking to social media to clarify that the car in the video was not his.

He expressed his disappointment in Zionfelix for not properly interpreting his words and accused him of misleading his audience.

In his social media post, Achipalago warned Zionfelix not to make him unleash his “venom” on him.

Many of Achipalago’s followers agreed with him, expressing their support and condemning Zionfelix’s actions.

  • I don’t think Fred Nuamah can deliver when elected as an MP – Efia Odo

I don’t think Fred Nuamah can deliver when elected as an MP – Efia Odo

Ghanaian actress cum socialite, Efia Odo, has shared her opinions on the CEO of Ghana Music Awards, Fred Nuamah’s decision to contest in the NDC primaries.

Efia Odo is of the view that, Fred Nuamah can not perform his duties when he’s elected to lead the constituency he’s contesting for.

Speaking with MzGee on United Showbiz, monitored by GhanaWeb, she explained why she made that statement.

According to the actress, the film director owes her a plague which should have been given to her the exact day she won the award, but since 2018, her plaque has not been delivered to her.

She added that, a lot of actors and actresses have also lodged complaints about not receiving their plaques from Fred, so if he’s unable to exhibit some kind of leadership when it comes to awards, what shows that when he wins the election, he will be able to perform his duties as an MP.

“I am not saying that Fred Nuamah is not a contestant. I’m just saying something like Ghana movie Awards where you supposed to award people and give them their plaques and you not able to deliver that, then how can you deliver in this too. Since 2018 I haven’t still gotten it and a lot of people are also complaining about that”, she told the host.

Efia Odo added that giving out a plaque is a very basic thing to do as an award organizer, so if he can’t do the basic thing, what shows he will be able to fulfill the promise he makes to the constituency when he is being voted into
    power.

The President urged the awardees not to allow the success chalked up to get into their heads because the achievement was the beginning of more to come for which reason they must continue to work hard.

He advised them to be diligent, hardworking and morally upright, adding that honesty and integrity were important values they must always uphold.

The President gave an assurance that the government will continue to place importance on access to quality education for all because “today’s youth running barefooted to school could be a future leader”.

  • Hearing impairment in babies is genetical

Hearing impairment in babies is genetical

One out of two cases of hearing impairment (HI) in babies in the country is due to genetic causes.

Also, one out of three babies with genetic HI has a syndrome, which means they have other conditions in addition to hearing impairment, while one out of four cases of HI in babies is also due to maternal infections acquired during pregnancy, complications after birth and head trauma.

This is contained in a study conducted on hearing impairment dubbed: Hearing impairment genetics studies in Africa (HI-GENES Africa).

The Lead researcher for the study, Elvis Twumasi Aboagye, made this known at the commemoration of this year’s World Hearing Day in Accra yesterday.

The ceremony was organised by the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) on the theme: “Ear and hearing care for all! Let’s make it a reality”.

    Causes

According to Mr Aboagye, HI was generally caused by environmental, genetic or hereditary factors, which consisted of syndromic and non-syndromic hearing impairment (NSHI).

He said genetic factors significantly contributed to the burden of HI in the country, adding that there was a high carrier frequency found in healthy persons during their study.

Mr Aboagye also said that some adult carriers of the gene had no idea about their status and, therefore, called for HI genetic screening to be conducted on people to know their status.

He also said that meningitis had been identified to be the common cause of HI for which effective interventions such as screening at an early stage of a person’s life were crucial.

Mr Aboagye further said that it was medically necessary for NSHI genetic testing and carrier screening to be considered in pre-marital counselling, as well as individuals with a family history diagnosis of HI.

He said the centre had developed and submitted a policy brief to the government to ensure that the majority of the population was screened for HI.

The Communications Manager at WACCBIP, Andrew Muniru Nantogmah, launched an HI resource pack to educate parents and caretakers on signs to look out for in their children for early detection.

He mentioned some of the signs to include delayed speech, frequent turning up of the TV volume and not following directions.

Others are not startled by loud noises, not turning to the source of a sound after six months of age and not saying a single word by age one.

“Such children are sometimes being mistaken for not paying attention or just ignoring, but it could be as a result of a partial or complete hearing loss,” Mr Nantogmah added.

A Public Engagement Officer at WACCBIP, Kyerewa Akuamoah Boateng, also said education was crucial to change existing traditional beliefs and myths, some of which claimed that HI was spiritual.

She urged the Ghanaian youth not to follow their path and rather use natural means to improve their body shape.

“Moesha started the liposuction business and the likes of Gifty Adorye and Nana McBrown joined. It’s like a long roll call and they don’t want us to talk about it because they are celebs. Why don’t they want us to talk about it.

“I respect the elderly but the liposuction is bad and they are influence the young ones to follow that path. People died in Nigeria. In Ghana, we know the story of the woman who died at Obengfo so what are they teaching the youth.

“What moral lessons are they teaching the youth. Per the definition of celebrities, none of them
fits that description. Living that fake kind of life. Smoking and drinking and influencing the youth badly. It is evil,” she said.

Focus on celebrities doing positive things and leave Shugatiti – Van Calebs charges media

Ghanaian traditional dance instructor, Van Calebs has lashed at the media for using their platform to fuel what he contends to be the immoral lifestyle of a social media sensation, Shugatiti

Van Calebs is outraged that mainstream media outlets are promoting the promiscuous lifestyle of Shugatiti who is the subject of a ‘sex match’ by American adult film star, King Nasir.

He is concerned that the media by doing that are justifying the actions of Shugatiti and tacitly encouraging others to use that path as a route to fame.

He is of the view that behaviors like that erode the moral fiber and virtues of the society and therefore wants the media to desist from making publications on the topic.

He advised that the media should instead switch attention to Hamamat Montia who is using her fame and modeling career to promote indigenous Ghanaian products and culture.

He noted Hamamat is seeking to shine positive lights on Ghana and must therefore be given the needed attention.

“I don’t understand why media houses and bloggers will be paying attention to this ashawo behavior by Shugatiti. There are people in this country doing so well to put the country out there and we are focusing on someone who sells sex. We can do better,” he shared on social media.

His outburst follows the social media exchange between King Nasir and Shugatiti which has the American porn star challenging the Ghanaian social media personality to a â€˜sex match’.

Your songs should not be based on sex only– Kafui Dey

Kafui Dey, a Ghanaian broadcaster, musician, and Master of Ceremonies, has advised Ghanaian musicians to prioritise social issues affecting society and sing about them in order to help reform, educate, transform, and change our ailing society.

Mr. Dey stated that music should not only be about money, wine, and sex but also about societal issues and how to best address them.

He wondered why musicians aren’t interested in writing songs that raise awareness of galamsey and other social ills.

He was speaking on Rainbow Entertainment on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm with host Daniel Dadson.

He was responding to a question about how radio has affected music in Ghana.

He said what we listen to affects our way of thinking, and some countries have policies that control what comes in and out of the country, but Ghana has been so relaxed.

According to him, if we want to know where the country is going, we need to look at the current generation of young people and how they act.

”If you want to see where Ghana is going, let’s look at our young people. That is where Ghana is going. If you look at the young people, that is where Ghana is going.”

He lamented the situation where Ghanaian musicians want to sound like Nigeria and vice versa.

He described it as interesting since it is only business for these musicians saying, ”not everything is about money. This whole money thing is a capitalist way of thinking. We go beyond that in Africa”.

Kafui Dey said ”I don’t hear musicians singing about the destruction of our environment like the Rastafarians do. The reggae people always sing about conscious issues. It is not always about whining about your waist or let’s make love. The reggae people talk about equal rights and justice. I want to see more consciousness from our musicians. It should not always be about sex and money”.

Let’s celebrate people while they are alive- Grace Ashy

Ghanaian Gospel Musician, Grace Ashy, has urged Ghanaians to celebrate people when they are alive and not wait till they are dead.

She said this in relation to the death of Ghanaian Footballer, Christian Atsu.

Christian Atsu, 31, was a victim of the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.

He played for Hatayspor, the day before the 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck. The devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria about two weeks ago claimed the lives of over 46,000 people.

12 days after the incident, Atsu was found dead.

On Sunday night, February 19, 2023, Atsu’s body arrived in Ghana via Turkish Airlines.

After his death, Madam Grace Ashy composed a tribute song for the late footballer which she released when she visited Atsu’s family house.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwa, Grace Ashy said, “I know it does not really happen, but let us learn to celebrate people whiles they are alive, let us appreciate them because the dead will not hear whatever you are doing.”

She continued, “Our brothers have played football and sacrificed a lot for the country, if we have anything to say to them like thank you or something, it should be now, not after when they are dead.”

Grace Ashy who said she had spoken with Christian Atsu for a few times said the late footballer was a very humble person.

According to her, it was difficult for her to believe Atsu was really dead, because she wished it were not true.

Meanwhile, she said the tribute song is something to appreciate him.

“There are a lot of players but there are few that I have a relationship with. I really appreciate Atsu, the fact that he helped orphans and gave hope to those without hope. So, if he has left us, we have to do something for him and this is what I can do,” she said.

The actor walked with his two friends after a coffee run.

Bruce Willis, 67, was publicly seen for the first time after his family revealed he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

In photos and video obtained by the Daily Mail, the “Die Hard” actor had a day out with two friends in Santa Monica, Calif. on Thursday.

During the outing, the actor sported a grey beanie, blue sweatshirt and black pants, which he paired with a black watch.

The “Sixth Sense” star’s day out comes two weeks after his family announced he had been diagnosed with the “cruel disease,” which can cause slowed movement, stiffness, balance problems and changes in behavior or language.

“While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis,” his wife, Emma Heming, ex-wife Demi Moore and five daughters said on the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration website on Feb. 16.

“FTD is a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and can strike anyone. For people under 60, FTD is the most common form of dementia, and because getting the diagnosis can take years, FTD is likely much more prevalent than we know,” the family continued.

While Willis’ family said there are “no treatments” for the disease, they hope “any media attention” can shed light on the illness “that needs more awareness and research.”

“Bruce has always found joy in life — and has helped everyone he knows to do the same. It has meant the world to see that sense of care echoed back to him and to all of us,” the statement concluded.

“We have been so moved by the love you have all shared for our dear husband, father, and friend during this difficult time. Your continued compassion, understanding, and respect will enable us to help Bruce live as full a life as possible.”

Last March, the action star’s family initially announced that he had aphasia — a medical condition that can affect a person’s ability to speak, write and understand verbal and written language — and would be stepping away from acting.

Since then, Willis’ relatives have given fans updates on his health. Most recently, Heming, 44, shared that she met with dementia specialist Teepa Snow to learn more about how to care for her husband.

“I’m grateful I had the opportunity to work with @teepasnows_pac who has helped me add to my dementia care toolbox,” she shared on Instagram on Feb. 27 alongside a photo with Snow.

“She’s a loving, compassionate and skilled leader in this space who navigates herself with pure empathy. She’s a gift,” the model wrote, adding that Snow has “a wealth of caregiving information” on her website.
