‘We entertained far less from John Mahama’ – Senyo Hosi slams government

Senyo Hosi, a convener of the Individual Bondholders Forum (IBF) has lamented the manner in which government is undergoing the current Domestic Debt Exchange (DDE) programme.

His concern stems from the decision to rope individual bondholders into the programme even though government had from the start (late last year) stated that they were not going to be affected.

The subsequent turnaround by government was occasioned by pushback due to plans to include pension funds at the center of the debt restructuring exercise amid an economic downturn as government races against time to secure Board Approval for a US$3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout.

Speaking on Citi FM’s EyeWitness News programme on January 11, 2022; Hosi lamented how the government has singlehandedly plunged the economy into a crisis yet was refusing to take responsibility for same.

He averred that by refusing to take responsibility for the economic mess but rather going after individual investments in government bonds, the government was worsening the plight of citizens who trusted them by investing in these bonds and government papers.

“We actually entertained less from John Mahama and we expected more from the current government Nana Addo. Nana Addo, you can’t do what you are doing.

“You can’t forget that they are lives you are dealing with and be oppressive in your approach. You can’t work like that, there must be proper consultations,” he stressed before rallying all individual bondholders to reject the current deal government was presenting under the DDE.

“Politicians continue to mess us up, abuse our economic rights and always make us pay for it. They run down everything and impose levies… this time we are saying it is over, we can’t be at the wrong side of the bargain forever.

“We are not your whipping cards…sit down and let’s talk, if not we aren’t doing it,” he warned.

Ghana Tourism Authority has stopped me from serving food in penis-shaped pots – Shugatiti

Ghanaian socialist who doubles as a nudist, Shugatiti, has detailed the challenges she has faced with government agencies ever since she opened a restaurant in Accra.

The business owner famed for serving food in genital-shaped clay pots has announced that the Ghana Tourism Authority has served her a letter asking her to desist from using her controversial pots.

According to the authority, her space isn’t safe for children.

“Ghana Tourism Authority served me a letter discouraging me from the use of my penis-shaped pot. They indicated that it isn’t safe for children. So now, we no longer serve with those pots…ever since I opened my shop, government officials have been disturbing me. You can’t operate a business in Ghana if you’re not strong.”

Shugatiti, in an interview with actor Kwaku Manu on the ‘Aggressive Show’ added that Ghanaian lawyer Maurice Ampaw has been the root cause of the continuous criticisms and constant visits from authorities.

Back in 2022, the famous lawyer known for condemning indecent exposure by celebrities and the general public chastised Shugatiti and urged authorities to close down her restaurant.

Shugatiti, who cannot fathom why Lawyer Ampaw has been on her case, wonders if he might be interested in her.

“That man, I guess he loves me, reason why he comes after me. I don’t understand him, and I haven’t offended him…I don’t have his contact details I would have called to question him. He aggressively talks about me on television meanwhile, I haven’t offended him. I have never met him,” she said.

Also commenting on the lawyer’s call for the closure of her new business, she said: “I saw it as one of those things, people will always talk…I see it as normal because no one has served me with a court document. I saw it as one of those things.”

  • Individual bondholders should be excluded from the debt exchange program – IBF to government

Individual bondholders should be excluded from the debt exchange program – IBF to government

The Individual Bondholders’ Forum (IBF) has asked the President and the Ministry of Finance to exempt individual bondholders from the planned Debt Exchange Program, which will begin on January 16, 2023.

The group, which serves as an umbrella organization for private investors in the nation, claimed that the start of the debt restructuring project robs investors’ money of their freedom and then steals their property legally.

The DDE initiative does not reflect the principles of good governance on the side of the Akufo-Addo-led administration, according to a statement released and signed by the group’s convener Senyo Hosi.

“The inclusion of Individual Bondholders in the proposed domestic debt exchange (“DDE”) programme announced on the 24th of December 2022 has been extremely unsettling and catastrophic for our membership and all others affected,” it noted.

“We (IBF) hereby humbly petition your office to reconsider your position in the DDE information memoranda of 24th December 2022 and as a matter of urgency grant the following:

    1. The exclusion of Individual Bondholders from the DDE.

    2. The exclusion of individual investors’ holdings in Collective Investment Schemes affected by the DDE.

    3. The exclusion of individual investors’ holdings in the ESLA Bonds in the DDE.

    4. The exclusion of individual investors’ holdings in the Daakye Bonds in the DDE.

    5. The commencement of discussions and/or negotiations with our membership to discuss the above.

The IBF further noted that since the commencement of considerations and discussions on government’s debt restructuring in the second half of 2022, Individual Bondholders have not been engaged in the process.

“This is at variance with the contractual principles of good faith, fairness and best practices,” the statement stressed.

“The social impact of the DDE as currently presented for individuals is the harshest on any investor category and catastrophic to the livelihoods of the about 1.3 million direct and indirect bondholders and their dependents. Unlike other investor categories likely to benefit from the Financial Stability Fund, Individual Bondholders have no support to fall back on,” it added.

  • VIDEO: Watch highlights of Hearts of Oak’s draw against King Faisal

Hearts of Oak recorded a draw against King Faisal in their match day 12 Ghana Premier League clash at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday evening.

There was nothing to separate both sides in a pulsating drawn game that was full of action with the only missing piece being a goal.

Hearts of Oak started the game on the front foot but rarely breached the resolute King Faisal back line.

The phobians went closest in the 6th minute with a strike from Isaac Mensah but the chance was comfortably saved by King goalie Benjamin Asiedu.

King Faisal showed that there is life in them as  Baba Yahaya sent a rasping shot against the crossbar.

Hearts youngster Yaw Amankwah Baafi was a constant threat to King Faisal but there were no goals as the first half ended 0-0.

With the introduction of Linda Mtange and Kwadwo  Obeng Junior, the threat increased but it was not enough for the breakthrough.

There were no goals in the second half as Hearts of Oak tried in vain to seek the breakthrough with the clearest opportunity falling to  King Faisal’s Gabriel Osei while Abednego  Tetteh also had his chance saved by goalkeeper  Richmond  Ayi.

The game ended 0-0 as there was nothing to separate both sides.

Bloggers like to post when I show my body – Efia Odo

Celebrated internet sensation and socialite Efia Odo, known in private life as Andrea Owusu has attracted backlash from many Ghanaians for her strip style of dressing and for making controversial comments on socio-political issues.

A scroll through her social media pages shows a series of posts capturing her in a bikini or wearing skimpy dresses.

But according to Efia Odo, her posts are not intended to make her famous. She, however, admitted her nude posts made her popular.

“I don’t wake up and say today I want to be controversial or I want to show my skin. It’s just who I am. It depends on where I’m going. When I’m going for an interview, my nipple is not out there uncovered but if I’m going to a club or a beach event, I’m going to show some skin”, she tells GTV Breakfast Show host, Valerie Danso.

She blamed bloggers for setting the agenda on her nudity and the comments that she makes.

“Most of the time bloggers don’t post when I’m covered. They like to post when I’m showing my body because that’s what is going to make their sites trend,” she said.

She further stated that the backlash from Ghanaians does not affect her decision. She, however, indicated that she has archived her Instagram posts from the past years to start a new era.
“There is a new chapter in my life which is my musical journey,” she disclosed.

Efia Odo released her debut single “Getting the bag” on January 1, 2023, and the music video has since attracted mixed reactions from Ghanaians.

You do not ‘get over it,’ you do not ‘move on,’ period.”

Lisa Marie Presley also said in the essay that she found comfort in the company of people who have faced similar tragedy, adding that her daughters help keep her going.

“I keep going for my girls,” she wrote. “I keep going because my son made it very clear in his final moments that taking care of his little sisters and looking out for them were on the forefront of his concerns and his mind. He absolutely adored them and they him.”

Over the years, the Ghanaian actress has been known as a staunch fan of Kwesi Arthur. It has been runoured so many times that they have been dating secretly, however, both of them denied their relationship publicly.

Efia and Kwesi have been spotted together a few times and the actress also featured in music video alongside the rapper.

  • Afrochella is now AfroFuture, organisers officially announce name change

Afrochella is now AfroFuture, organisers officially announce name change

The 2022 Afrochella was said to be the last Afrochella in Ghana, an announcement that brought shock to many.

Organisers of Afrochella made the ‘shocking’ announcement at the very end of the two-day festival in December 2022. “This is the last Afrochella,” said co-founder Abdul Abdullah to the thousands of people who were at the El-Wak stadium in the capital, Accra.

In a new update, the co-founder of Afrochella, Ken Agyapong Jnr, has revealed that though they announced that the annual show had come to an end in 2022, the event will return this year, 2023.

According to the son of Hon Kennedy Agyapong, they have decided to rebrand and give the event a new name and identity, hence, marking the end of the name ‘Afrochella’ last year.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz, the co-founder, he said “at the beginning of last year (2022) in February, when we dedicated that the theme for the year will be Afrofuturism, that is when we actually came up with the idea of changing names. Because, in the long run, we knew we were going to change the name”.

There were speculations the event might not be making a return over a lawsuit from Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and its organizer, Goldenvoice for copyright infringement. The lawsuit was filed in a California federal court on Wednesday, October 5.

In the suit, Coachella and Goldenvoice claim that Afrochella is “intentionally trading on the goodwill of [Coachella and Goldenvoice’s] well-known COACHELLA and CHELLA festivals and trademarks by actively promoting music events in the United States and in Ghana using the confusingly similar mark ‘AFROCHELLA’ and by fraudulently attempting to register Plaintiffs’ actual trademarks as their own.”

However, Mr Agyapong dismissed such claims stating that plans were already in place months prior to changing Afrochella to AfroFuture. He disclosed that the names on their social media handles were even changed ahead of the December 2022 event.

  • Mzbel discloses how someone tried to sabotage her ‘AfroChella gig.’

Mzbel discloses how someone tried to sabotage her ‘AfroChella gig.’

Ghanaian singer, Mzbel, has recalled an instance where an acquaintance tried to prevent her from participating in the 2022 Afrochella festival.

According to the veteran singer, organizers of the concert tried to reach her through the said person, but none of their information got to her.

Mzbel said she wasn’t privy about the details of the gig until about two weeks before the event when organizers were compelled to reach out after the delay in feedback.

She said after a thorough conversation with the organizers who pulled out evidence to buttress the point that they reached out through a third party, it was realized that there was a deliberate attempt to sabotage her.

“The person through which Afrochella contacted me tried to sabotage me. From what I’ve heard, that person nearly prevented me from performing on stage. He didn’t want me to. The person was close to me. When he was contacted, he gave out my email address and every other important information but never informed me. I was kept in the dark until a few weeks to the concert. When the call came through, the organizers asked if I am not interested because they didn’t hear from me since they sent out the message.

“They said they wanted to finalize their budget and that they were calling to ask if I’m interested or not. They mentioned the name of the person they relayed the information through and when I asked him, he said he doesn’t know anything about it. He said, he doesn’t even know what Afrochella is. But I informed the organizers and they forwarded all the emails and messages they sent to him to me. I showed it to him and he was ashamed. Because of all these, we couldn’t make changes and chose what we want for better performance,” she stated in an interview with Barima Kakyire Agyemang

To her, these factors contributed immensely to her poor performance at the concert.

“I told them I wanted live band because for some years now, miming doesn’t work for me. We told the organizers and they said its late for that that’s why I was compelled to mime on stage. If details of the gig had gotten to me on time, I would have performed better with live band,” she stated.

China COVID peak to last two-three months, hit rural areas next

BEIJING, Jan 13 (Reuters) – The peak of China’s COVID-19 wave is expected to last two to three months, and will soon swell over the vast countryside where medical resources are relatively scarce, a top Chinese epidemiologist has said.

Infections are expected to surge in rural areas as hundreds of millions travel to their home towns for the Lunar New Year holidays, which officially start from Jan. 21, known before the pandemic as the world’s largest annual migration of people.

China last month abruptly abandoned the strict anti-virus regime of mass lockdowns that fuelled historic protests across the country in late November, and finally reopened its borders this past Sunday.

The abrupt dismantling of restrictions has unleashed the virus onto China’s 1.4 billion people, more than a third of whom live in regions where infections are already past their peak, according to state media.

But the worst of the outbreak was not yet over, warned Zeng Guang, the former chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a report published in local media outlet Caixin on Thursday.

“Our priority focus has been on the large cities. It is time to focus on rural areas,” Zeng was quoted as saying.

He said a large number of people in the countryside, where medical facilities are relatively poor, are being left behind, including the elderly, the sick and the disabled.

Authorities have said they were making efforts to improve supplies of antivirals across the country. Merck & Co’s (MRK.N) COVID treatment molnupiravir is expected to be made available in China from Friday.

The World Health Organization this week also warned of the risks stemming from holiday travelling.

The UN agency said China was heavily under-reporting deaths from COVID, although it is now providing more information on its outbreak.

China’s foreign ministry said the country’s health officials have held five technical exchanges with the WHO over the past month and have been transparent.

Health authorities have been reporting five or fewer deaths a day over the past month, numbers which are inconsistent with the long queues seen at funeral homes and the body bags seen coming out of crowded hospitals.

The country has not reported COVID fatalities data since Monday. Officials said in December they planned to issue monthly, rather than daily updates, going forward.

Although international health experts have predicted at least 1 million COVID-related deaths this year, China has reported just over 5,000 since the pandemic began, one of the lowest death rates in the world.

    TENSIONS WITH JAPAN, SOUTH KOREA

Concerns over data transparency were among the factors that prompted more than a dozen countries to demand pre-departure COVID tests from travellers arriving from China.

Beijing, which had shut its borders from the rest of the world for three years and still demands all visitors get tested before their trip, has said it strongly opposes such curbs, which it finds “discriminatory” and “unscientific.”

Tensions escalated this week with South Korea and Japan, with China retaliating by suspending short-term visas for their nationals. The two countries also limit flights, test travellers from China on arrival, and quarantine the positive ones.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said on Friday Tokyo will continue to ask China to be transparent about its outbreak, labelling Beijing’s retaliation as one-sided, unrelated to COVID, and extremely “regrettable.”

Parts of China were returning to normal life.

In the bigger cities in particular, residents are increasingly on the move, pointing to a gradual recovery in consumption and economic activity this year. Still, traffic data and other indicators have not yet fully recovered to levels of just a few months ago.

While China’s reopening has given a boost to financial assets globally after one of their worst years on record, policymakers from the United States to Europe worry it may fuel renewed inflationary pressures.

However, December’s trade data released on Friday provided reasons to be cautious about the pace of China’s recovery.

“With growth outside of China still slowing, exports may continue to contract until the middle of the year,” said Zichun Huang, economist at Capital Economics.

Jin Chaofeng, whose company in the east coast city of Hangzhou exports outdoor rattan furniture, said he has no expansion or hiring plans for 2023.

“With the lifting of COVID curbs, domestic demand is expected to improve but not exports,” he said.

Data next week is expected to show China’s economy grew just 2.8% in 2022 under the weight of repeated lockdowns, its second-slowest since 1976, the final year of Mao Zedong’s decade-long Cultural Revolution that wrecked the economy, according to a Reuters poll.

Growth is then seen rebounding to 4.9% this year, still well below the trend of recent decades.

Some analysts say last year’s lockdowns will leave permanent scars on China, including by worsening its already bleak demographic outlook.

  • GNPC to drill first oil well in Voltaian basin by Q1 of 2024 – CEO

GNPC to drill first oil well in Voltaian basin by Q1 of 2024 – CEO

The Ghana National Petroleum Commission (GNPC) is hoping to crown its exploratory efforts in the Voltaian basin by drilling a well between fourth quarter of 2023 and first quarter of 2024.

According to the Chief Executive Officer, Opoku Ahweneeh Danquah, the GNPC is busily enaged in exploring the hydrocarbon prospectivity of Ghana’s onshore sedimentary basin, under a Reconnaissance license through a mix of geophysical, geological and geochemical techniques.

Additionally, GNPC operates the shallow water GH-WB-01 block under Reconnaissance license. Over the next two years, GNPC will acquire, process and interpret 3D seismic over the block to evaluate hydrocarbon potential and drill one well.

Mr. O-A Danquah made the announcement in London, UK on Thursday, January 12, at the 2023 Ghana Oil and Gas Roadshow held at the Cavendish Conference Centre.

His presentation, which was the theme; ‘GNPC; A Strategic Partner for Delivery of Available E&P Projects’, also touched on the operatorship drive of the GNPC.

“GNPC is continuously evaluating opportunities to leverage our technical competence and financial strength in unlocking much needed hydrocarbon potential of our sedimentary basins,” he noted.

He further encouraged “…all to strongly consider the opportunities available at this Roadshow and assure you that in GNPC you have a dependable technical and commercial partner working together to execute work programs leading to much needed oil and gas discoveries.”

The Roadshow saw presentations on an overview of Ghana’s upstream industry as well as Ghana’s Fiscal and Regulatory Regime and Energy Transition Strategy. There were technical presentations on Farm-in operations, available blocks among Q&A sessions.

In attendance were the Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh; Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, Papa Owusu Ankomah as well as experts from the oil and gas industry.

The GNPC’s strategic objective within the energy transition climate Mr. Danquah notes, “is to accelerate responsible exploitation of Ghana’s oil and gas resources to meet growing energy demand as we continue to embrace and develop green energy projects.”

    Increased participation in E&P licenses

The CEO revealed the growth strategy led to the establishment of GNPC Explorco, a registered subsidiary, with participating Interest in six Exploration and Appraisal licenses in offshore basins.

“Our strategic entry into these licenses is underpinned by our knowledge-based conviction of hydrocarbon prospectivity and commercial assessment of financial exposure and risk.

“As a paying partner, Explorco forms part of the Contractor party and contributes experience and lessons learnt from other exploratory licenses with the aim of enhancing exploration success and reducing project delivery timelines.

“In 2021, GNPC through our subsidiary acquired Commercial Interest in Jubilee and TEN fields to increase our participation and revenue from both fields,” he stated.

GNPC, Ghana’s National Oil Company (NOC), was established in 1983 by PNDC Law 64, to support the government’s objective of providing adequate and reliable supply of petroleum products and reducing the country’s dependence on crude oil imports, through the development of the country’s own petroleum resources.

In the early 2000’s, GNPC’s focus was amended to solely operate within the upstream energy sector, relinquishing previous downstream operations.

Prior to the establishment of Petroleum Commission Ghana in 2011, GNPC in addition to the core mandate played pseudo-regulatory roles in assisting the Ministry of Energy in chartering the path to commercial discoveries in Ghana.

    The New GNPC

Subsequently, GNPC has transformed into a fully commercial state-owned entity with strategic objective of leading the sustainable exploration, development, production and disposal of the petroleum resources of Ghana, by leveraging the right mix of domestic and foreign investments in partnership with the people of Ghana.

GNPC’s role is to ensure the efficient supply of natural gas from our oil and gas fields to Ghana National Gas Company to meet Ghana’s increasing energy needs by efficiently negotiating gas sales from our producing fields.

As a partner in all Petroleum licenses, GNPC has developed diverse competencies across the entire value chain to support partners in the execution of agreed Work Programs.

Having worked with different Operators over the years, GNPC has developed a highly skilled and adaptable workforce embracing new technology and operating strategies of prospective partners.

GNPC has over the years conducted regional studies on our own as well as commissioning third-party experts such as Robertson CGG and De-Goyler and Macnaughton to deepen our understanding of the Ghana sedimentary basins.

GNPC is seeking to utilise the wealth of knowledge and expertise of the Ghana sedimentary basins in collaboration with new partners in unlocking remaining hydrocarbon potential for mutual benefit.

My father always says I am an opportunist – Nana Aba Anamoah reveals

Ghanaian journalist, Nana Aba Anamoah, has confessed that her father labelled her an opportunist because of her penchant to ‘use people.’

However, she said there is nothing wrong with her father’s description of her because she believes she uses her opportunistic behaviour in a positive way.

In an adomonline.com report, she acknowledged that she has no regrets and qualms about that character trait.

“My father always tells me I am an opportunist, and it is true, but I don’t regret it at all, because I like to use people positively.

“If I come into contact with someone, I find ways to become friends with them so I can understudy them and I’m ready to go to every extent to serve them without hesitation because I know what I want in them,” she said as quoted by adomonline.

According to Nana Aba, she learned these qualities from several persons she admires.

She continued by saying that she also keeps a diary in which she lists her strengths and flaws and that, to achieve her goals, she tries to be modest.

“I have a master book with all the people I like including Emma Morrison, Israel Laryea, Gideon Aryeequaye and others who I learnt a lot from.

“I write down their strength and weakness and make them my strength. I humble myself to get what I want and will be ready to do everything for them without hesitation and that is how I have lived my life,” she added.

  • Dismissal of Chiana students by GES ‘harsh’ and ‘retrogressive’ – Minority

Dismissal of Chiana students by GES ‘harsh’ and ‘retrogressive’ – Minority

The Minority in Parliament has criticised the dismissal of eight students of the Chiana Senior High School by the Ghana Education Service (GES).

In a statement signed by ranking member on Parliament’s Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, the Minority described the decision as ‘harsh’ and ‘retrogressive’.

According to the Minority, even though the students who insulted President Akufo-Addo in a viral video acted out of order, their right to education should not be curtailed.

The statement said the right to education is guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution, hence the move by the GES must be reviewed.

“Whereas the Minority is against the misconduct of the eight students, and condemns same, we wish to state that the decision by the GES to dismiss them is harsh and retrogressive”, the statement emphasised.

The release from the Minority further disclosed that, “In this age and time when there is increased advocacy and renewed focus on increasing access to education, any decision that takes a child away from the classroom can only be seen as an absolute drawback to this renewed focus and objective.

It is therefore, regrettable to learn of the decision of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to dismiss the eight female students of the Chiana SHS in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East region for insulting the President of the Republic some months ago”.

Having criticised the decision by the GES, the Minority went ahead to plead with the President to intervene in the matter.

“We are also by this statement, urging the GES to proffer an alternative but corrective punishment to the eight students.

This we believe would be in the best interest of our collective goal to ensuring that every Ghanaian child has access to formal education.

In conclusion, the Minority wishes to appeal to His Excellency the President, to use his good offices to pardon these students as he did in 2020 when a group of some students misconducted themselves towards him”, the statement ended.

Earlier today, the Ghana Education Service (GES) dismissed eight students of the Chiana Senior High School in the Upper East Region for allegedly insulting President Akufo-Addo.

Prior to the dismissal, the students had been on suspension.

The GES says its investigation into the incident confirmed that the students used unsavoury language against the President in a viral video.

It thus described the actions of the students as “very undesirable, and contrary to the acceptable standards of the conduct generally required of any student in Ghana’s educational system”.

Prior to the dismissal of the students, the GES had earlier apologised to the President over the said conduct.

Meanhwile, reacting to the news of the dismissal, some Ghanaians have taken to social media to berate the GES over its decision.

According to the critics, the decision is simply untenable.

One of them is an advocate for children’s rights who is unenthused about the decision.

The Country Director of the International Child Development Programme, Joyce Larnyoh said the Ghana Education Service should employ more appropriate means of punishment other than dismissal.

Speaking on JoyNews’ News Desk, Mrs Larnyoh reiterated that no child should be denied the right to education no matter the circumstance.

Others have however backed the move; arguing that it will help instill discipline amongst students, especially at the Senior High School level.

The affected students have since apologised for their actions.

  • Don’t drink tea, bread with eggs and salad if you earn less than GH¢2K – Economist

Don’t drink tea, bread with eggs and salad if you earn less than GH¢2K – Economist

Economist Dr Evans Nunoo, says it doesn’t make economic sense for someone who earns between GH¢1,000 and GH¢2,000 to be taking tea, bread with eggs and salad.

January, the first month of the year, is often observed as a difficult period in relation to personal financial management.

The current unstable economic environment makes the situation dire.

To effectively manage one’s current financial situation, consumers are advised to assess their assets and obligations to make informed purchases.

Dr Evans Nunoo, gave the advice when he spoke to David Akuetteh on Luv-in-the-morning.

The topic was ‘how to survive on a salary of GH¢1,000 to GH¢2000’.

“Two thousand Ghana cedis is a small amount, if you look at our current economic situation. If you have to pay school fees and other bills. If you are a young person yet to start a family, 2000 cedis might be okay. Though you may want more.

“But if you are a family person, you don’t have the luxury of drinking tea and bread with eggs and milk. It’s too complex. Some of them even add salad,” he said.

Dr. Nunoo also advised on multiple bank accounts for expenditure and projects.

“If you are expecting multiple streams of income, you are tempted to have more bank accounts. If you want to work harder and be financially strategic, it is better to keep more than one bank account. It is not as if, if you are having only one bank account, you are making a mistake or not working hard.”

Economists are advising that not more than 50% of personal monthly income should go towards debt repayment.

Nearly every Ghanaian carries some kind of debt.

But many wonder how much income should be allocated towards paying off credit cards, car loans, student loans, or mortgages.

Generally, the rule to follow is to pay as much as you can each month in excess of the minimum required payment for the loan. This can pay off the debt sooner.

Dr. Evans Nunoo also outlined what he described as unnecessary expenses for the year 2023.

“You should not spend because you want someone to see you as a good person. You should not spend just so people will see you are of a certain social standing. You don’t spend because others are spending,” he explained.

Per the article published by the Daily Guide, unconfirmed sources revealed that former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu may make his way to join the government.

  • Four ways to get rid of vaginal odour

Four ways to get rid of vaginal odour

Every vagina has a scent but with proper hygiene and cleanliness one can keep their private part clean and devoid of pungent smells.

According to my.clevelandclinic.org, one’s lifestyle, hobbies, foods and general health affects the scents the vagina produces.

For instance, the smell of your vagina changes frequently throughout a woman’s menstrual cycle. Midcycle is often when vaginal discharge smells the most.

After sexual activity or exercise, the vagina may emit a stronger odour. It’s natural for each person’s vagina to have a distinct aroma.

Strong, foreign, unpleasant odours are abnormal, especially if they linger for many days and smell fishy.

A stinky vaginal odour may be a sign of a health issue, particularly if it is together with other symptoms including burning, itching, and a discharge that is greyish-white in colour.

Your pH level, or how acidic your vagina is, frequently determines your vaginal odour. Your vagina is home to a wide variety of germs. They comprise what is referred to as your vaginal flora.

To maintain the proper pH level in your vagina, these bacteria must coexist in a delicate equilibrium.

Healthy pH balance wards against infections that result in unpleasant vaginal odour. In contrast, an imbalance in your vaginal flora might make your vagina smell bad overall or like fish.

Read below three ways to take away scents in the vagina:

    Practice good hygiene:

When cleaning the vulva, just use mild, unscented soap and warm water. After exercising, shower and change into clean clothing right away to avoid sitting for too long in hot, sweaty attire or a moist swimsuit. Harmful germs thrive best in warm, humid conditions.

    Wear light, breathable clothing:

Do not put on clothing that is overly tight around the vulva area, such as thongs. Instead, put on cotton underwear that drains moisture and heat.

    Drink plenty of water

If one is dehydrated, their vagina may smell strongly like ammonia. The waste in one’s urine might become particularly concentrated and unpleasant-smelling if there is not enough water present. Water can hydrate you and get rid of the scent.

Protect your vagina (and vaginal flora) during sex

The use of condoms lowers the risk of STIs and other illnesses that might cause the vagina’s pH levels to fluctuate, such as BV.

To avoid causing vaginal irritation, exclusively use flavourless and odourless lubricants.

Sacking of Chiana SHS students harsh, retrogressive – Minority

The Minority in Parliament has described the sacking of the eight students of the Chiana SHS in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East region by the GES as harsh and retrogressive.

The eight students were dismissed by the GES after they were caught on tape raining insults and unpalatable words on President Akufo-Addo.

The decision by the GES comes on the back of a thorough investigation into the matter.

But in a statement signed by the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe in reaction to the development, the Minority noted the decision by the GES is a drawback to global efforts aimed at ensuring increased access to education.

“In this age and time, when there is increased advocacy and a renewed focus on increasing access to education any decision that takes a child away from the classroom can only be seen as an absolute drawback to this renewed focus and objective,” the statement read.

The Minority in Parliament also believes the dismissal of the eight students is against the provisions of Article 25 of the 1992 Constitution and Goal(4) of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

While stating their disapproval of the conduct of the students, the Minority says “We wish to state that the decision by the GES to dismiss them is harsh and retrogressive.”

The NDC group in Parliament is rather urging the GES to review its decision and to “proffer an alternative but corrective punishment” to the eight students for their misconduct.

The Minority has also appealed to President Akufo-Addo to intervene and pardon the victims since anything short of that could truncate their educational dreams.

  • Two youths order the EC not to hold district-level elections in Lower Manya Krobo

Two youths order the EC not to hold district-level elections in Lower Manya Krobo

Two teenagers in Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in Eastern Region have secured an interlocutory injunction from the Koforidua High Court against the Electoral Commission from conducting the District level election scheduled to be held on January 17, 2023, in the municipality.

The applicants Michael Tetteh, and Angel Agyemang, both residents of Agormanya and Asitey respectively are restraining the respondent, the Electoral Commission and its agents or officers from conducting the District Level Elections in Lower Manya Krobo until the final determination of the case on violation of their constitutional right to vote in the upcoming elections under article 33 of the 1992 constitution of Ghana.

According to the applicants, the commission has failed to conduct a voter registration exercise to enable them to register having attained 18 years.

Paragraph 8 of the affidavit by the applicants states “that since turning 18, we have not had any opportunity to register to vote or be qualified to be elected as Assembly Members in the Lower Manya Krobo District Assembly.”

They added, “we have been further advised and believe same to be true that our right to vote is likely to be contravened if the Respondent is allowed to conduct the district level elections in Lower Manya Krobo district level election.”

The applicants prayed the court to restrain the Electoral Commission from conducting the elections until the commission conducts the voters’ registration exercise in accordance with article 45(a) of the constitution. The Electoral Commission is mandated to compile the register of voters and revise it at such periods as may be determined by law.

The Municipality was scheduled to hold the district-level election on January 17, 2023 which a total of 127 male candidates are vying to represent their electoral areas whilst 280 are contesting the Unit Committee polls.

The district-level elections was not held for eight years in Lower Manya Krobo due to a dispute between the Municipality and Dangme West District, now known as Shai-Osudoku over 11 electoral areas created at Akuse.

The dispute which started with the defection of some of Akuse assembly members to the then Dangme West District, was, however, settled by a Supreme Court ruling in favour of Lower Manya Krobo.

The election of Assembly members and unit committee members was immediately held in 2013 and subsequent periods however the election has not been coterminous with the national calendar of the electoral commission.

Meanwhile, Konor of Manya Krobo Traditional Area, Nene Sakite in a petition dated 12 December 2022, called on EC to reconsider mainstreaming the district level elections in Lower Manya Krobo with the national routine.

“…we wish to kindly plead and appeal to the Electoral Commission of Ghana to reconsider its decision in the conduct of the Lower Manya Krobo District Level Elections in January, 2023 to enable the district join the nationwide District Level Elections in 2023.”

Debt Exchange: After building wealth on our backs, you are now putting your hands in our pockets – Senyo Hosi to politicians

A financial and economic policy analyst Senyo Hosi has criticised the government for its decision to include individual bondholders in its proposed debt exchange programme.

Speaking in a JoyNews on Wednesday, December 12, 2022, Hosi said that the government has squandered all the resources of the country which has led to the current economic mess and it is not lifting a finger to resolve it.

He added that the government is rather worsening the hardship ordinary Ghanaians are facing by tempering with their investments which they depend on for survival.

“On our backs, you are living large. On our backs, you guys have built wealth that you never merit. On our backs, you are living lives that your salaries can not justify.

“And nobody is chasing you for it. You can keep it. At the right time, God will ask you. But please don’t come and now put your hands in our pockets. Some people called saying now they don’t know how there are going to pay their wards’ school fees.

“… what crime have individual bondholders committed? Their only crime is that they trusted their government,” he said.

The government after promising that its debt exchange programme, dubbed Domestic Debt Exchange (DDE), will only affect securities dealers and funds, private banks and investment companies, insurance schemes, pension funds, and non-resident investors, has now extended it to individual bondholders.

This was after it excluded pension funds from the programme after severe pressure and threats of strikes by labour unions.

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the ranking member of Parliament’s select committee on finance, has expressed concern about the continuous high rate of increase in the prices of goods and services in Ghana.

Dr Forson, the Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Essiam, expressed this worry while reacting to the 54.1 percent inflation rate for December 2022 announced by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The 54.1 percent inflation rate is an increase from the 50.3 percent rate recorded the previous month – November 2022.

According to the GSS, the main drivers for the December 2022 inflation rate include Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels group (82.34%); Furnishings, Household Equipment (71.52%) group; and transportation (71.42%).

In a tweet shared on January 11, 2022, Dr Ato Forson stated that the rate of increase in prices of items is becoming frightening.

He suggested that the Bank of Ghana will have to intervene by instituting some monetary policy measures.

“This is getting scary; Bank of Ghana may have to respond with an increase in monetary policy rate!” parts of the tweet read.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg has indicated that Ghana’s 54.1 percent inflation rate is the 7th highest inflation rate in the world among 120 nations.

  • Heavy security at UG over new residential policy

Heavy security at UG over new residential policy

There is a heavy security presence at the University of Ghana on the first day of re-opening for students.

Police Officers were deployed to prevent continuing students of the Commonwealth Hall from entering their previous Hall.

This comes on the back of a new residential policy arrangement by the University which directs continuing students from Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah Halls to seek accommodation outside the traditional halls.

Some students of the Commonwealth hall secured an interlocutory injunction on January 6, 2023, restraining the management of the University from implementing the residential policy decision.

But, on Thursday, January 12, 2023, some continuing students arrived on campus to see a heavy security presence, preventing them from accessing the various halls.

Some students have secured an injunction against the policy, but the University authorities argued that it implemented the decision before the injunction was secured.

Some of the students were stranded on campus with some not knowing where to place their luggage and others items.

“We came here and the school’s security said they will not allow us to enter [the halls], and the police are assisting them to do that,” one of the frustrated continuing students said.

The UG in a statement on January 11, 2023, indicated that about 83% of students who will not be allowed back into the halls have agreed to find accommodation outside.

But another student furiously said, “That is not the truth, the reason is that the way they brought about the whole thing was like a threat. They said you accept or reject to become a non-resident. They pushed the whole thing to our throat, we were left with no choice. We want the whole world to know that the UG management is flouting the laws of Ghana. If it’s contempt of court it’s not for me to say, the court will prove itself in the coming days. The injunction says let the status quo remain, what management is doing so bad, the whole world and everybody must come against it”.

The UG on January 11, 2023, in a statement, instructed its lawyers to vigorously fight the injunction, arguing that it was secured on inaccurate information by the supposed students.

  • IMF rescue at severe risk if debt exchange fails, according to Joe Jackson

IMF rescue at severe risk if debt exchange fails, according to Joe Jackson

Joe Jackson, a financial analyst, has cast a dour light on Ghana’s efforts to get an IMF agreement should the debt exchange program fail.

One of the prerequisites for obtaining a financial bailout from the International Monetary Fund, according to the analyst, is having debt sustainability.

To force Ghana’s debts back to unsupportable levels, however, due to the country’s present high level of debt distress, a restructuring is now required.

We won’t be able to achieve debt sustainability if we don’t pass this debt exchange scheme, which will also cause the IMF program to either be postponed or perhaps put in jeopardy.

“Up until now, the markets have been treating us kindly because everybody’s assumption is that somewhere in February or March IMF is coming through. If we don’t achieve our debt right, if we have to stress them again then IMF will not come when it is due or back off and then, the chaotic debt reforms we are trying to prevent will now happen with all the dark consequences of not being able to access any funds anywhere,” he is quoted by 3news.com

Joe Jackson however asked the government to negotiate with bondholders to ensure that a consensus is reached.

“Take current requests from groups as an opportunity to engage quickly and use this opportunity to negotiate acceptable terms so that the domestic debt programme will go ahead if not as scheduled, at least at this month,” he said.

Debt exchange program to bring economic indicators back to one-digit territory – Government

Ghanaians could be curious about the state of the economy when the debt exchange program is finished.

The debt exchange program was made public by the Finance Ministry, inviting bondholders to trade in existing bonds for new ones with later maturities.

The government said that the country’s high debt level made this essential.

While answering some frequently asked questions on the debt exchange programme, the government said “Once the domestic debt exchange is successfully completed, and as progress is made on securing international financial support, the government will benefit from macroeconomic stability, larger fiscal space, and new affordable debt service obligations. The associated risks and discount factors are expected to then go back to reasonable levels, close to one-digit territory.

“As such, the new bonds are expected to ensure the maximum recovery possible for the domestic financial sector under our very constrained fiscal and debt situation,” it added.

However, spelling out the modalities of the programme during its announcement, the government noted that individual bondholders were excluded from the programme.

Also, the government strongly discouraged Eligible Holders from making partial Offers, noting that, the government shall, in its sole discretion, determine whether to accept or reject any partial Offers (i.e., Offers made by an Eligible Holder in respect of less than their/its entire holding of Eligible Bonds).

“In fact, by tendering their Eligible Bonds, Eligible Holders represent and warrant that such Eligible Bonds constitute all the Eligible Bonds beneficially owned by them,” the ministry added.

  • IMF deal to be reached latest by February – Akufo-Addo

IMF deal to be reached latest by February – Akufo-Addo

Ghana will be provided a credit facility by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in February this year, President Akufo-Addo has revealed.

While interacting with some students from Harvard University in the United States at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, the president said “as we speak and hopefully by the end of this month or latest by the middle of February, a full-blown IMF agreement will be put in place.”

President Akufo-Addo believes that the economic assistance will help “rebuild the confidence of outsiders in our economy and our own self-confidence in the manner in which the economy can proceed.”

The government has reached a Staff-Level Agreement with the IMF team, however, it is yet to be  presented to the Fund’s Management and Executive Board for approval.

IMF’s Mission for Ghana, Stéphane Roudet, has revealed that government must first prove that “the programme is fully financed” and the “fiscal consolidation path, comprehensive debt restructuring that the authorities have launched will be sufficient to reestablish debt sustainability” before the Staff-Level Agreement can be presented.

Until then, Ghana would be unable to access the $3billion in its new three-year arrangement under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) with the Fund.

The President is however optimistic that “we will succeed in implementing the various considerations of the staff level agreement that will enable us to have a full IMF agreement.”

He remains optimistic at a time when his government is yet to implement one of its debt restructuring measures, Debt Domestic Exchange. Debt restructuring is one of the conditions Ghana is supposed to meet before it receives support from the IMF.

There has been serious pushback from bondholders, who insist they will not sign on to the Debt Domestic Exchange programme.

Convener of the individual bondholder’s forum, Senyo Hosi has described the programme as suppressive and has urged individual bondholders to reject the offer.

“Anybody who’s been contacted by your bank, write back to your bank saying you will not accept it. Anybody who has his money in any of the funds, whether it is the data bank, M fund, or a balance fund, etc do not accept it. It does not augur well for your good or that sort of economy, you are under no compulsion to accept it,” he said.

The deadline for the invitation to the programme is Monday, January 16, 2023.

  • African policymakers and business leaders will gather in Ghana to advance the AfCFTA agenda

African policymakers and business leaders will gather in Ghana to advance the AfCFTA agenda

About 150 African business and political leaders will gather in Ghana at the end of January to explore strategies for fostering intra-African trade and investment.

With the main goal of creating prosperity across the continent, the Africa Prosperity Dialogue series, also known as the “Kwahu Summit,” is anticipated to give African political and commercial leaders a platform to set and advance proposals to improve Africa.

The Africa Prosperity Network is organizing the inaugural debate, which will take place from January 26–28, 2023, in collaboration with the Office of the President, the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, and other partners.

This year’s event is on the theme: “AfCFTA – From ambition to action – delivering prosperity through continental trade.”

Addressing a pre-summit media briefing in Accra on Wednesday, Dr Eugene Owusu, Executive Director and Coordinator, Summit Secretariat, said the Summit would foster stronger partnerships between industry leaders and Heads of State on specific transformational projects to propel the implementation of the AfCFTA.

He said there would be a Business and Policy Leaders Dialogue to be held at Adukrom in the Eastern Region from January 26-27, 2023, followed by a Presidential Business Leaders’ Summit that would take place at the Peduase Presidential Lodge.

“The Presidential and Business Leaders Summit will be a high-level roundtable dialogue between the selected African Heads of State and business and industry leaders, and it is expected to culminate the adoption of a compact between the Heads of State and the business leaders.” Dr Owusu said.

The African continent is estimated to hold a market of 1.3 billion people, with a combined market size of $2.2 trillion.

The AfCFTA Secretariat, which has its headquarters in Ghana, came into force in 2019, with the aim of promoting trade and investments among African countries.
Mr Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General, AfCFTA Secretariat, welcomed the Summit, saying the establishment of the AfCFTA “is one of the important steps in Africa’s development agenda.”

He said the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war had challenged the continent to think innovatively and reduce its dependency on imports.

“Many countries in Africa depend on imports so when supply is disrupted, we experience inflation and food insecurity.” Mr Mene said.

He said 44 African countries had thus far ratified the AfCFTA Agreement, adding that Mozambique was expected to ratify the framework soon.

Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Minister of Information, said the Government would participate in the Summit and expressed hope that it would create opportunities for businesses in Ghana as took advantage of the opportunities on the continent.

Veteran football administrator, Alhaji Grusah has advised Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif to stop begging Qatar for one of the dismantled Stadia.

At the end of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar is disassembling some of its stadia and will gift them to selected countries free of charge.

The information gathered is that Ghana through Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif is in talks with Qatar authorities to be considered for one of the stadia.

Speaking to Akoma FM in an interview on Thursday, Alhaji Grusah indicated that he is not in support of the idea.

“I will advise the Sports Minister not to appeal to the Qatar government for any stadium because we cannot maintain it,” the King Faisal owner argued.

Alhaji Grusah added, “We can’t even maintain it should they agree to hand over the stadium to us unless the Qatari government agrees to maintain it for us.

“We just can’t do it, the flow of water at our washrooms at various stadia is not working, and becomes difficult if not impossible to visit the washrooms when you go to the Stadium and this is because we lack maintenance culture in this country.”

Meanwhile, Alhaji Grusah has confirmed that each member of the Black Stars management committee received a whopping $100,000 as an appearance fee at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

  • MoMo agents advocate for a GH 500 threshold and a 0.5% E-Levy rate

MoMo agents advocate for a GH 500 threshold and a 0.5% E-Levy rate

The Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) daily threshold should be increased from GHS100 to GHS500, according to the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MMAAG).

In order to encourage tax compliance and the achievement of the revenue target, it also asked for a further drop in the rate imposed on daily transactions exceeding GHS100 from 1% to 0.50%.

The call coincides with the government’s implementation of the new 1% rate, which replaces the previous 1.5% rate and takes effect on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

A study by the Centre for Economics, Finance, and Inequality Studies (CEFIS), has shown that a reduction of the rate to 0.5 per cent could increase revenue from the levy to GHS3.2 billion in 2023, which is higher than the Government’s projected GHS2.6 billion for the same period.

The figure is expected to increase to GHS3.6 billion in 2024 and reach GHS4bn by 2025, which are equally higher than the Government’s expected revenue of GHS3bn and GHS3.4bn for 2024 and 2025, respectively.

The Centre noted that a 0.5 tax rate on E-ley would increase tax compliance hence, more transactions through MoMo – the major source of electronic transactions particularly among the poor and the number one driver of financial inclusion in Ghana.

When the Ghana News Agency, spoke to Mr Evans Otumfuo, the General Secretary of MMAAG, he described the reduction of the rate from the 1.5 per cent to one per cent, as welcoming.

Mr Otumfuo, however, said there was the need for a further reduction because the 1.5 per cent rate had put pressure on the MoMo industry and negatively affected their operations and that of other businesses.

He said: “The rate should come down and when that’s done, people who may think of alternatives will see the rate as insignificant and they’ll gladly accept to pay, so we’re calling for a rate for the levy to be between 0.1 to 0.5 per cent.”

He added, “If you walk to the bank, you’re at liberty to transact GHS20,000 daily without any E-levy applied to you, but if you come the MoMo platform, it’s only GHS100. So, the threshold for MoMo should be extended to GHS500.”

“Consumers are sensitive to prices such that so when prices are lower, consumption will be higher, so, with the data that will come from the volumes of transactions, we expect that going into the mid-year budget review or the 2024 budget preparation, there should be a further reduction in the rate.” Mr Otumfuo, said.

The Government’s hope of raking in about GHS6.9 billion in taxes from the E-levy failed in 2022, leading to several revisions in the revenue projections with the recent one being GHS594 million for quarter four of 2022 per data in the 2023 budget.

Data from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) also showed that revenue from the E-levy between May and September 2022, was GHS328m – which was some 10 to 15 per cent month-on-month improvement in the collection of the tax.

Mr Otumfuo was hopeful that the one per cent rate would make traders and individuals who did larger volumes of transactions made some business sense to use MoMo as the major platform for their payment of goods and services to shore up revenue.

To boost the interest of Ghanaians to use MoMo the more, he called for capping on huge sums of daily transactions and said: “The Government can cap transactions and say any amount above GHS5,000, you’re to pay a GHS50 or GHS100.”

“With this capping, it will provide a conducive environment for the MoMo to strive further,” the General Secretary of Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana, told GNA.

Some MoMo vendors, traders and individual users of MoMo, who spoke to GNA said the reduction would have positive effects on their daily lives.

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has assured that the systems of telco operators had been reconfigured to make the new rate of one per cent after a daily transaction of GHS100 threshold was applied effectively.
