  • Davido’s son’s nanny, cook detained as police release six others

The Lagos State Police Command has held Davido’s cook, and his late son’s nanny in custody while the six other persons who were arrested with them, have been released

Earlier, when the news of the death of Davido’s son broke, some eight persons, including the singer’s domestic staff, were arrested to aid in investigations.

These persons were said to have been in Davido’s residence at the time the boy drowned in a pool.

However, an update on the issue said that two out of the eight persons are still in detention.

    The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a conversation with Instablog Naija, indicated that;

“I spoke with the DPO and he said the cook and the nanny have been detained. Other domestic workers brought in for questioning have been released.”

Meanwhile, Davido and his fiancée, Chioma, who are said to have been inconsolable since the incident occurred, are yet to make a public statement.

  • I’m ready to tell the court how Bullgod and his men planned Fenick’s murder – Shatta Wale

Shatta Wale has alleged that his former manager, Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, known chiefly as Bullgod together with his (latter) men planned the murder of one Fenick.

His latest revelations have once again resurrected the murder case of Fennec Okyere, the late manager of rapper Kwaw Kese, who met his untimely death on Thursday, March 13, 2014, when some unknown assailants broke into his residence and shot him dead.

Eight years after the incident, Fenick’s murder remains unsolved.

Bullgod who was arrested in connection with Fennec’s death was acquitted and discharged in February 2018.

On November 2, 2022, Shatta Wale who once worked with Bullgod said in a Facebook post that the artiste manager planned the death of one ‘Fenick’.

“Bull Dog since u r bringing out secrets. You will tell Ghanaians. What happen to Fenicks Murder !! And I am not joking about this time!! I am ready to tell the court about what you told me about you and your men and how planned that foolish act get ready. This Akuffo Addo won’t give you a murder chance to be on our streets !!! Watch how this ends !!! You can’t fight time !!!” read the post sighted by GhanaWeb.

Shatta Wale’s claim comes after Bullgod leaked the list of collaborations on the Dancehall musician’s Gift Of God album, Wednesday morning.

Shatta Wale has a song with American singer, and songwriter, John Legend, Dancehall greats, Vybz Kartel and Popcaan as well as Stefflon Don, this is according to Bullgod.

The relationship between Shatta Wale and Bullgod, formerly known as Bulldog, has not been cordial in the last couple of months. The artiste manager disclosed he was no longer working with the Dancehall musician. Since that statement was made, the two have been at each other’s throat via social media posts.

  • UTAG et al extend industrial action ‘until further notice’

The national leadership of the four striking teacher unions has extended their strike “until further notice.”

The unions in question are the University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).

They have attributed the development to the government’s failure to address their concerns earlier raised.

“As all may be aware, the strike was declared because of Government’s arbitrary variation of the Conditions of Service of the Labour Unions to their disadvantage without recourse to them; and disparities in the implementation of adjusted ex-pump rate of GH¢10.99 for Vehicle Maintenance and Off-Campus Allowances.”

“It must be placed on record that the ex-pump rate in contention does not even reflect the present economic conditions as the rate for petrol and diesel this morning is GH¢13.99 and GH¢15.99, respectively, at some of the pumps,” the group in the statement added.

They added that the issues remain unresolved as the Employer (i.e the government), since 19th October 2022, has refused to convene meetings to resolve the impasse.

The group also mentioned that “two hearings at the NLC have not yielded the needed results as the Employer has refused to discuss “terms of payment” with us, as directed by the Commission.”

“The National Leaders of the Labour Unions in the public universities, therefore, wish to reiterate that the ongoing strike action is to continue until further notice.”

They, thus, have strictly cautioned teachers against convening meetings (be it virtual or physical) during the period of the strike action, which entered its third week on Monday, 31st October 2022.

Notwithstanding the strike action, the following services will continue, according to the group: a skeletal staff will be at the Finance Directorates to process salaries; there will also be security on campuses to ensure safety; health services will also be available; and maintenance services (at least once a week cleaning, emptying of trash and garbage cans and weeding).

In addition, Heads of Academic Units can visit their offices to perform minor administrative duties once a week, preferably on Mondays, with the aid of a skeletal staff.

They further assured “our hard working members who would be running these Services that we are forcefully championing their interests with every strength at our disposal.”

The group expressed their dismay over the development.

“We are not happy with our industrial action, but it is our last resort in the face of the brute show of Governmental arbitrariness and insensitivity in handling our plight during these hard times. We are in a crisis as alluded by the President of our Republic during his recent address on the State of the Economy and leadership have been magnanimous and demonstrated our willingness, at previous engagements with Government, to make some sacrifices given the difficult times in which we find ourselves.

“We expect the Commission to boldly direct the Employer to do the needful in abiding by the ruling of the Commission in its next sitting, which is slated for Wednesday, 2nd November 2022,” they said.

They also indicated their willingness to allow the Government to stagger the payment or develop a payment plan over a period, even if the Employer cannot afford to pay off the entire allowance in one go. But the Government has chosen to remain intransigent and adamant. We, therefore, call on all our members to sustain the communication of the language better understood by the Government.

  • 3 children among 14 injured in Halloween drive-by shooting in Chicago

As many as 14 people, including three children, were wounded in a drive-by shooting on Chicago’s Garfield Park neighborhood on Monday night.

The Chicago Tribune reports the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m., when a person opened fire from an SUV into a crowd of people who were standing on the corner of South California Avenue and West Polk Street.

According to officials, a three-year-old boy, an 11-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy were among those shot, with the rest of the victims being adults between the ages of 30 and 50. Police said the three children are in “serious condition,” while another two adults were transported to local hospitals in critical condition.

“We have reported at least up to 14 people shot,” Superintendent David Brown told reporters. “They’re all in various conditions, between critical and non-life-threatening. We also have a person struck by a vehicle at the scene as well.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, the shooting remains under investigation, with no one in custody.

“Last night, terror touched the lives of 14 individuals, including three children, in another tragic display of gun violence by cowards indiscriminately shooting into a crowd,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in an official statement on Tuesday.

“The shooters had no concerns for the lives of the adults and children impacted, but I am calling on people of goodwill who have information, to come forward. None of us can be silent when faced with this kind of tragedy.”

  • Westside Gunn addresses Conway the Machine’s past contract issues with Griselda

Several months after Conway the Machine parted ways with Griselda Records, Westside Gunn is finally addressing his brother’s past issues with the label.

During an appearance on the Breakfast Club in March, Conway revealed his contract with Griselda, which he’s since fulfilled en route to becoming an independent artist, wasn’t in his favor. However, Conway did admit to never reading the fine print in the paperwork.

“When we did that shit in the beginning, I really wasn’t all the way… I’mma keep it a buck. I didn’t even read that contract, bro,” Conway shared. “I didn’t read that shit—I just signed that shit and moved on. Unfortunately, the contract wasn’t in my favor. So now, going forward, it’s time to redo all that. I gotta make sure it’s in my favor now.”

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Westside Gunn maintained that any financial issues the pair previously had is in the past.

“That’s my brother,” Gunn said. “That fool’s son is my nephew. If you ask that man now if I owe him a penny…that shit got twisted and screwed up. They tried to blow it out of proportion like I robbed my brother. And what he was saying was he never read the contract, which he didn’t.”

“That’s my brother, but he can’t ever say I cheated on him,” he added. “That’s why you see, ain’t shit stop. We still been on tour since that came out, and we have done every festival since that came out. We’ve been on each other project’s since that came out. If somebody robbed you, why would you do that?” Conway’s been building up his Drumwork Music Group, which Gunn says he fully supports, noting, “My brother’s a grown man; he wants to be a boss and have his chapter. Why not?”

Gunn then urged people to “stay out of family business,” admitting that despite his previous disagreements with Conway, the pair are on good terms now.

“Family sometimes have disagreements,” he shared. “The negative narrative, that’s what people love. That’s what they want. And I’m trying to tell people, put this shit in bold letters: it’s never happening. Griselda is forever, can’t be stopped.”

  • A Boogie Wit da Hoodie delays album release to avoid competing with Drake and 21 savage’s ‘her loss’

A Boogie Wit da Hoodie will not be releasing his new album on Friday as initially planned, and it’s all due to Drake and 21 Savage.

The Bronx native took to his Instagram Stories and said bluntly the reason for the delay was that he didn’t want to compete with Drake and 21’s forthcoming collab album Her Loss, which also drops this Friday.

“Sorry but album dropping in December now, Drake was dropping same day and I’m not with that,” Boogie wrote on his IG with multiple laughing emojis.

Me vs. Myself will now drop on Dec. 9, and will feature the previously released singles “24 Hours” with Lil Durk and “B.R.O.” with Roddy Ricch, which dropped on Oct. 7. The latter pair have an especially fruitful working relationship, and have collaborated numerous times in the past such as on 2019’s “Tip Toe,” and 2020’s “Numbers” and “Lost My Soul.” A Boog said during a 2019 interview with Billboard that he and Roddy Ricch and share an “exact mindset” when it comes to making music.

“You know how you are with your day-one friends? We could be like that, but at the same time, we understand each other enough to know, ‘Aight, I can be next door from him. He’s working on his project, I’m working on my project and we just sit in our own spaces and zone out,’” A Boogie explained. “But then, he can pull up on me like when he pulled up to New York and I’m in Jue Lan club. Same thing when I go to L.A., I pop up on him and it’s the same love. So anytime somebody treats the relationship like that, you gotta keep it going and keep that genuation. I said genuation. That’s a good a—word.”

Me vs. Myself will be the first new album from A Boogie wit Da Hoodie since 2020’s Artist 2.0. He previously dropped off a prequel EP titled B4 AVA last year.

Drizzy and 21 were initially meant to drop Her Loss on Oct. 28, but ended up pushing back the project out of respect for Noah “40” Shebib, who contracted COVID-19 while working on the tape. 21 Savage and the 6 God, meanwhile, graced the cover of Vogue this week, which hit newsstands on Monday.

“Me and my brother on newsstands tomorrow,” Drizzy wrote of the moment on Instagram. “Thanks @voguemagazine and Anna Wintour for the love and support on this historic moment Her Loss Nov 4th.”

  • Former Apple employee pleads guilty, admits to defrauding company of over $17 million

A former Apple employee has admitted to defrauding the company of millions of dollars, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California announced this week.

Dhirendra Prasad, 52, pleaded guilty on Tuesday in connection with what prosecutors described as “multiple schemes” involving Apple. While Prasad began working for Apple in 2008, he’s believed to have started defrauding the company in 2011, ultimately leading to a loss for the tech giant of more than $17 million through various means.

The individual’s duties while employed at Apple included buying parts and services from vendors. While carrying out these duties, Prasad is said to have stolen parts and inflated invoices, as well as had Apple pay for things that were never actually received by the company.

A Department of Justice press release gives a few examples of Prasad’s schemes, including fraudulent invoice proceedings involving previously charged vendor owners.

Prasad, whose initial charging was revealed in March of this year, has now pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud and to conspiracy to defraud the United States. The former charge carries a potential maximum sentence of as much as 20 years behind bars, while the latter carries a possible maximum sentence of five years. Sentencing is set for next March.

Apple, meanwhile, was in headlines last month in connection with the selling of an unopened first-generation iPhone at auction. As previously reported, the historic device sold for just under $40,000 at LCG Auctions.

In September, Apple rolled out its latest iPhone as part of its Far Out event in Cupertino. For a full breakdown of what all was unveiled during the special event, revisit this link.

  • Billie Eilish and boyfriend Jesse Rutherford use Halloween costumes to Poke fun at age gap

Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford decided to respond to the public discourse surrounding their 11-year age difference with their Halloween costumes.

Eilish dressed up as a baby, complete with a bonnet and diaper, and Rutherford donned a bald cap with grey hair.

Not everyone was a fan of costume choices.

Concerns towards their relationship isn’t entirely rooted in their age gap. According to TMZ, Rutherford has known Eilish since she was 15 or 16 years old. A source told Hollywood Life that her brother Finneas, who has also allegedly known The Neighbourhood vocalist for quite some time, approves of their relationship.

“Jesse gets along flawlessly with [Billie’s] brother Finneas, who is so important to her,” the insider said. “Finneas approves of this, as he really loves seeing his sister so happy and giddy. Billie has gone through such amazing changes and growth in the past few years, and she is ready to be with a man who is on her same level. She says that Jesse is the perfect guy for her.”

According to People, Eilish broke up with actor Matthew Tyler Vorce in May. “Nobody cheated on anyone. Relationships end.

Simple as that,” he shared on his Instagram Stories. “Creating rumors and LYING on the internet is dangerous.” Vorce was 30 years old at the time of their split.

  • S/R: Ignore myths about eating eggs – Egg campaigners

The Ghana National Eggs Campaign Secretariat (GNECS) has appealed to the general public to ignore all the myths about eating of eggs as well as dishes prepared at home with eggs.

According to the group, eating egg is very good for the growth of the body.

Speaking in Damongo in the Savannah Region at a one-day sensitisation workshop on Thursday, 27 October 2022, on the importance of eggs in diets for regional and district nutritionists and dieticians under the Ghana Health Service in the Savannah Region, Mrs Comfort Kyerewa, the coordinator for the Ghana National Eggs Campaign Secretariat (GNECS) indicated it is fine for children and pregnant women to eat eggs contrary to earlier beliefs and assertions, some based on a theory that claims eggs contain a high level of cholesterol.

She argued that research has condemned those perceptions, and urged the general public to stick to the consumption of eggs.

She explained that eggs contain nutrients that are essential for human health, adding that eggs promote the health needs of the body and improve the eyes, blood, muscles, bones, heart, brain, and stomach, among others.

The campaign seeks to empower nutrition officers in the region and districts with information on the importance of eggs.

According to her, the Association wants everyone to know that egg is a superfood and there is a need to overcome the myths surrounding egg consumption.

Comfort Acheampong further explained that the district nutrition officers have been added to the training and sensitisation campaign to assist in selling good messages about eggs to all citizens of Ghana.

”Eggs cost less as compared to other protein variables in the country, such as fish,” she also noted.

Participants, including egg sellers and producers, were also educated on the usefulness and better ways of preserving eggs.

  • Sacking Ofori-Atta won’t solve our problems but will help with ‘aesthetics’ – Kwesi Pratt

Seasoned Journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. says President Nana Akufo-Addo missed some relevant points during his nation address on the economic challenges facing Ghanaians.

The President on Sunday, October 30, 2022 assured the citizenry that his government is tackling the economic problems and believed they will soon be relieved of the hardships.

Highlighting some measures the government is undertaking to address the plight of the populace, the President said; “We are in a crisis, I do not exaggerate when I say so. I cannot find an example in history when so many malevolent forces have come together at the same time. But, as we have shown in other circumstances, we shall turn this crisis into an opportunity to resolve not just the short-term, urgent problems, but the long-term structural problems that have bedeviled our economy.

“I urge us all to see the decision to go to the International Monetary Fund in this light. We have gone to the Fund to repair, in the short term, our public finances, and restore our balance of payments, whilst we continue to work on the medium to long-term structural changes that are at the heart of our goal of constructing a resilient, robust Ghanaian economy, and building a Ghana Beyond Aid.

“I am able to report to you, my fellow Ghanaians, that the negotiations to secure a strong IMF Programme, which will support the implementation of our Post COVID-19 Programme for Economic Growth and additional funding to support the 2023 Budget and development programme, are at advanced stages, and are going well.”

But to Mr. Pratt, the President should have touched on the concerns of the Members of Parliament and Ghanaians about the Finance Minister and the size of his government.

According to him, sacking the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and reducing his government size is not the solution to the economic problems, however it will give the people hope that he (President Nana Addo) is paying attention to them and is serious about resolving the economic challenges.

Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo”, Mr. Pratt explained that the President should, for aesthetics purposes, heed the calls to dismiss the Finance Minister and minimize the number of his Ministers.

“Sometimes, something is not the real foundation but it helps in terms of public perception and so on. I believe those calling for the dismissal of Ken Ofori-Atta, Charles Adu Boahen and saying the number of Ministers should be reduced are not saying it because that’s the solution to the problem, because it is not the solution to the problem, but it helps with aesthetics. It gives people the confidence that the government is concerned about their grievances and wants to do something about it. That is the context . . .” he stated.

  • Public officials to lose jobs for using private emails – Ursula Owusu warns

Communications and Digitalisation Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has sent a strong warning to public officials; that beginning next year the use of personal emails for official government business will no longer be permitted.

Announcing the directive, she said government has partnered with Microsoft and E Solutions, its local partner, to roll-out the Smart Workplace platform – the virtual office for government workers which provides the needed tools for staff communication, collaboration and meetings without participants being in the same space.

“With all these tools available, I am happy to announce that the use of personal emails for government business will no longer be permitted by end of this year. Any government agency that has not yet been on-boarded should contact NITA to be on-boarded before close of the year. Please let me repeat: it will not be acceptable to use personal emails to do official government business from next year,” she stated.

She further warned that any public official who insists on using his or her private email in conducting government business will outrightly lose his or her job.

The move, according to her, is aimed at protecting the country’s security as well as institutional memories.

“By the end of this year, all organisations working in the public and civil service should be on the SMART workplace platform to use the secure email services that are on there. For the CEOs and public service officers, as we are writing it into the business processes in the public service, if you don’t use the secure email services you could use lose your job because you are compromising security of the entire organisation’s data. And, we can’t allow individuals to put our entire systems at risk,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful stated.

She was speaking at a Technology Breakfast Meeting organised the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) in collaboration with the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) and Office of the Head of Civil Service (OHCS).

“If we didn’t have the systems in place to be able to facilitate this, then we could have been edgy. But, we can comfortably thump our chest and say that NITA is in a position to ensure every public sector official has an official email to do their business so that official information stays within the official domain,” she added.

She said the public sector ICT ecosystem must have the right architecture, security protocols, business continuity set-up, maintenance culture and operate according to best international practices; and users and managers of the system must be guided by standards and specified operating protocols to minimise risks such as cyber-attacks, data loss, breaches and leakages, system outages and the like.

“You Chief Directors and CEOs present here today are key stakeholders in achieving a digital public sector, and by extension a digital Ghana. Your leadership and support in driving the needed reforms that come with introduction and use of digital initiatives is key. You will have to lead by example and set the right tone for your staff to understand and appreciate the reforms being rolled out,” she stated.

    The technology breakfast meeting

A two-day event organised by NITA in collaboration with SIGA and OHCS, the meeting brought together key stakeholders and decision-makers in the Digital Ghana Agenda.

The event’s objectives were to: introduce decision-makers within the public service to highlights of Ghana’s Digitalisation agenda; get the decision-makers to appreciate their layer of the digitalisation framework and the role they play in its realisation; re-introduce the Smart Workplace TM (Government Virtual Office) to the executives, and adoption-strategies to ensure their institutions are on boarded and utilising the Smart Workplace; and the cessation of using private emails for government business.

Addressing the executives, Director General of NITA, Richard Okyere-Fosu, said the country’s efforts to digitalise its economy have come a long way with some good success stories to share – adding that government has thus far invested over US$500million and continues to invest in the effort to digitalise this economy.

“Most of this investment by government is to provide the needed infrastructure and enabling environment that provides the basic and needed framework to allow all other sectors within the public sector to also digitalise or automate the delivery of their mandate,” he stated.

“It is therefore important as public sector executives for us to know and align with what government has already done, what government is doing, and what government plans to do in the area of digitalisation,” he added.

This, according to him, will ensure that state agencies avoid duplication of resources and efforts, but rather consolidate, optimise their initiatives within the technology space, and deploy interoperable technologies which can communicate with existing and future systems.

“It is also our duty to lead the adoption of ICT in our various institutions to promote transparency, accountability, efficiency and improved productivity. Furthermore, we will have to provide the needed leadership by leading the change management process in efforts to digitalise the public sector,” he stated.

    Time to be technology-driven

On his part, the Director-General of SIGA, Ambassador Edward Boateng, said with Ghana at the forefront of digitalisation in Africa, it has become increasing important that state owned enterprises work smart to become more efficient and productive.

“There is a need to employ technology to reduce waiting times, offer a more effective customer service experience, and enhance service delivery,” he stated.

He said SIGA in partnership with NITA is driving this agenda, and urged all specified entities to come on board with them in this journey as there will be the introduction of a digitalisation KPI into the Annual Performance Contract.

“SIGA and NITA are ever-ready to provide consultancy services to entities that need to set up their Information Technology Platforms to get started,” he stated.

  • Minority signals debt restructuring in 14 days; says there’ll be haircuts

The government is expected to execute some sort of debt restructuring in the next 14 days, according to the NDC Minority Caucus in Parliament, which could have an impact on the investor community.

No individual or institutional investor, including pension funds, in government treasury bills or other instruments will lose money as a result of the ongoing IMF negotiations, President Akufo-Addo has promised Ghanaians.

The minority leader Haruna Iddrisu responded to the President’s comments by arguing that debt restructuring is unavoidable given the catastrophic status of Ghana’s economy.

He said contrary to President Akufo-Addo’s claim that there will be ‘No haircuts’, investors in government bonds and other pension funds will be adversely affected by the move.

“President Nana Addo Dankwa in his attempt to rebut President John Dramani Mahama and our Ranking Member, the Hon. Ato Forson on debt and its management and sustainability dismissed the argument of a haircut. He was categorical that there will be no haircut.

“We are assuring the people of Ghana, we’re assuring investors, people with savings, people with investments in instruments that there will be a barber of a sort, probably that barber will be Sika mp3 dede barber.

“Whether it affects domestic investment or domestic instruments, we’re giving you only fourteen days from today, you’ll hear from them publicly, efforts to restructure our unsustainable debt, and those efforts will necessarily include a Sika mp3 dede barber for many persons who have investment and savings in some instrument,” he told Journalists in Parliament.

The Tamale South MP further accused the President of failing to take responsibility for the troubles the country is enduring in his address on the economy.

“The President failed to accept responsibility that he’s responsible for the sorry state of the Ghanaian economy and he’s responsible for the wrenched economy which has consequences on livelihoods, poverty has exacerbated, cost of living has gone high, cost of doing business high, many businesses are folding up, some industries are now re-routing their investments into neighbouring Ivory Coast and other countries because Ghana is no longer the investment haven as it should be.”

  • Video shows Diddy getting into heated exchange with ‘power’ actor Michael J. Ferguson while dressed as the Joker

Diddy had an eventful Halloween, as he painted the town red dress as Heath Ledger’s Joker.

Videos of Diddy in full character made the rounds all weekend, including one in which he appeared to get into a heated exchange with Power actor Michael J. Ferguson.

The clip shows Ferguson, who portrays 2-Bit in Power, call Diddy a “pussy,” which prompted Diddy to let out a Joker-inspired laugh before calling Ferguson a “clown.”

The two then exchanged harsher insults, with Diddy questioning why Ferguson had an issue with him. “What’s up, baby? You don’t like me?” he says in the clip. “Then motherfucking get to it, n***a. If you don’t like me, you motherfucking fronting. Get to it, bitch. Don’t fucking play with me on Halloween. I’m out here with love, n***a.”

It looks like Ferguson doesn’t know who he was dealing with, as Diddy continues to berate him. “You fucking pussy, make sure you won’t never talk to me like that,” he says.

“We’re having a good time. Why you wanna come at me like that? You got a problem? You really taking over my energy right now? What did I do to you? Do you know who I am?”

  • Don’t arrest black market operators, but engage them – Nana Akomea

Nana Akomea, the Chief Executive Officer of the State Transport Corporation (STC), has pleaded with the government to refrain from detaining those who work in the forex and black markets.

Following President Nana Addo’s speech on Sunday, October 30, 2022, about the state of the economy at the moment and the steps his administration is taking to address the economic difficulties, Nana Akomea made this call.

    Sika Mpɛ Dede

Speaking to the nation, the President said; “Fellow Ghanaians, as the French would say, l’argent n’aime pas le bruit, to wit, money does not like noise, sika mpɛ dede. Where there is chaos, where there is noise, where there is unrest, you will not find money. If you talk down your money, it will go down. If you allow some unidentifiable person to talk down your money, it will go down.”

“The recent turbulence on the financial markets was caused by low inflows of foreign exchange, and was made worse in the last two to three weeks, in particular, by the activities of speculators and the Black Market. An anonymous two-minute audio message on a WhatsApp platform predicting a so-called haircut on Government bonds sent all of us into banks and forex bureaus to dump our cedis, and, before we knew it, the cedi had depreciated further.

“All of us can play a part in helping to strengthen the cedi by having confidence in the currency, and avoiding speculation. Let us keep our cedi as the good store of value it is. To those who make it a habit of publishing falsehoods, which result in panic in the system, I say to them that the relevant state agencies will act against such persons.”

He underscored steps being taken to restore order in the forex markets.

    Steps To Restoring Forex Market

“The following actions have been taken thus far:

    1) enhanced supervisory action by the Bank of Ghana in the forex bureau markets and the black market to flush out illegal operators, as well as ensuring that those permitted to operate legally abide by the market rules. Already some forex bureaus have had their licenses revoked, and this exercise will continue until complete order is restored in the sector;

    2) Fresh inflows of dollars are providing liquidity to the foreign exchange market, and addressing the pipeline demand;

    3) the Bank of Ghana has given its full commitment to the commercial banks to provide liquidity to ensure the wheels of the economy continue to run in a stabilized manner, till the IMF Programme kicks in and the financing assurances expected from other partners also come in;

    4) Government is working with the Bank of Ghana and the oil producing and mining companies to introduce a new legal and regulatory framework to ensure that all foreign exchange earned from operations in Ghana are, initially, paid to banks domiciled in Ghana to help boost the domestic foreign exchange market; and

    5) the Bank of Ghana will enhance its gold purchase programme.”

President Has Spoken, It’s Time To Act

Speaking in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ show, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah called on the State authorities not to let the President’s orders be in vain.

“The President cannot go and stand at Airport Police station to arrest those selling money on the black market when he has given this direction and the Governor is there, the IGP and the Police officers are at the Airport Police station this morning. So, action must follow . . . and you see if we all decide to dump everything on the President as the only source of our interest and our criticisms, people will go scot free . . . We have to ensure action happens but it is the collective effort and pressure on all the agency Heads to get the action happening,” he stated.

    No Arrests

But Nana Akomea disagrees with the idea that the black market and forex operators should be apprehended as a solution to fixing the forex markets.

Making his submissions on ‘Kokrokoo’, he called for amicable resolution between the authorities and the forex operators.

“You must sit with them to find out their ways. Why doesn’t the Bank of Ghana have dollar but some are at Cow Lane? You have to ask yourself that question and before you can find answers, you must sit with these people,” he said.

  • ‘Your demand to peg salaries to US dollar untenable’ – VALCO to workers

The management of the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) has claimed that its employees want their pay tied to the dollar.

This came about as a result of a demand made by over 300 workers, who were supported by union executives, following their most recent compensation adjustment, which took effect on September 1, 2021.

However, recent employee unrest at the business has prevented management and employees from coming to terms, which led to protests on Friday, October 28, as a result.

VALCO in a statement however clarified that the salary of the Ghanaian worker is not indexed in the United States but rather in Ghanaian local currency, the Cedi.

“The demand for workers to have their salaries pegged to US Dollar is untenable and must be disregarded,” portions of the statement read.

“We however recongize that both internal and external factors may cause an appreciation or depreciation of the cedi to the US Dollar and other foreign currencies, a situation that may impact the salaries of workers from time-time,” VALCO explained.

In addition to this, management of VALCO said workers have since rejected a 22 percent salary increment in demand of the dollar equivalent.

According to the management, staff of the company described the increment as insufficient and staged a demonstration in the early hours of Monday, October 31, 2022, to register their displeasure.

The workers are therefore calling for better conditions of service and the immediate dismissal of some management members whom they describe as retirees.

  • Ghanaian traders, businessmen are making life unbearable – Hassan Ayariga

Hassan Ayariga, a lawmaker in Ghana, has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to establish a standard to regulate the cost of food products on the market.

The politician accuses some market vendors of intentionally raising prices while blaming the government in a Daily Graphic post on Facebook.

The APC leader claimed that traders are making life difficult for citizens and blaming the dollar for it.

    Read his full statement below:

“Prices of foodstuffs such as local bananas, pawpaw, coconut, salt, okro, cassava, kontomire, palm oil, koko, Fura and Wassa Wassa have gone up astronomically in the market.

“Even when all these items are all grown in Ghana, those commodity’s prices have been doubled in the markets and we still blame the dollar. Ghanaian traders and businessmen are making life unbearable for fellow Ghanaians.

“Government should institute a price guarantee and control system to control prices of goods and services in the system.”

  • FLASHBACK: Ghanaians to consume more ready-made fast foods – US study reveals

According to a survey by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Ghanaians will expect more prepared and fast foods in the coming years.

According to the survey, Ghanaians would increasingly prefer pre-made foods, canned goods, sauces, and bottled beverages in the years to come due to population growth and an increase in disposable money.

According to a piece of the paper, “Ghana is also anticipated to import more global snack foods as Ghanaian families demand more easily accessible food products.”

A new report released by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has revealed that Ghanaians’ demand for readymade and fast foods will significantly rise in the next few years, ABC News can report.

The report explains that in the next few years, already-prepared foodstuffs, canned foods, sauces, and bottled drinks among others will be in very high demand relative to their current demand.

USDA revealed that an increase in population and a rise in disposable income of Ghanaians are the main drivers of this imminent shift in consumption in the very near future. In general, the demand for Western goods, especially protein-rich products will rise.

“Similarly, global snack food imports by Ghana are expected to increase as Ghanaian households desire more readily-accessible food products,” a portion of the report indicated.

According to the report, this shift in consumption is also partly attributable to the inability of Ghana’s agricultural production to meet the growing demand hence the resolve to patronise foreign-made foods.

“A young labour force, annual increases in labour productivity, high rates of urbanization, and recent increases in employment are driving demand for modern products and new foods”, the report further explained.

This will require Ghana to import more meat products annually, the report predicted.

Also, the report showed that Ghana imported nearly $2 billion of agricultural and related products in the past three years. The imports were primarily from the EU, China, Brazil, and Southeast Asia. The US holds a 4.9 percent market share of Ghanaian agricultural imports, the report said.

According to the report, Ghana maintains an open trade environment towards U.S. agricultural imports and market preferences appear favourable for increasing trade volume.

This report comes at a time Ghana’s government is considering implementing policies such as the “See, Eat, Wear, Feel Ghana” campaign to reduce Ghana’s food importation bill.

  • Black market fraud: ‘President has spoken, it’s time to act’ – Oppong-Nkrumah to IGP, BoG

Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, the Minister of Information and Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, has tasked George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police, and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana with carrying out the President Nana Akufo- Addo’s directions on forex illegalities.

On October 31, 2022, the President gave a speech outlining the steps he is doing to alleviate the recent market volatility.

The President said; “The recent turbulence on the financial markets was caused by low inflows of foreign exchange, and was made worse in the last two to three weeks, in particular, by the activities of speculators and the Black Market. An anonymous two-minute audio message on a WhatsApp platform predicting a so-called haircut on Government bonds sent all of us into banks and forex bureaus to dump our cedis, and, before we knew it, the cedi had depreciated further. “To those who make it a habit of publishing falsehoods, which result in panic in the system, I say to them that the relevant state agencies will act against such persons. Indeed, some steps have been taken to restore order in the forex markets and we are already beginning to see some calm returning. We will not relent until order is completely restored. The following actions have been taken thus far:

    1) enhanced supervisory action by the Bank of Ghana in the forex bureau markets and the black market to flush out illegal operators, as well as ensuring that those permitted to operate legally abide by the market rules. Already some forex bureaus have had their licenses revoked, and this exercise will continue until complete order is restored in the sector;

  • Chuck D condemns gun violence as ‘abnormal behavior’ following takeoff’s death

Public Enemy legend Chuck D is addressing gun violence following the tragic death of Takeoff, who was gunned down Tuesday morning in Houston.

In a conversation with TMZ, Chuck D spoke about his generation’s ability to focus its attention on reminding people that the “music and art form is beautiful,” which he suggested his predecessors have failed to do.

“This is abnormal behavior,” Chuck D said about the gun violence issue that’s claimed countless rappers’ lives over the past few years.

He continued, “It is a tragedy, and the pain is unbearable…The peace, unity, love aspect of hip-hop should be revered.”

Chuck D went on to blame the “industry” for absorbing hip-hop culture en route to “normalizing” such behavior. “In any other walk of life, it would’ve been addressed far earlier,” he said. “You have people who’ve grown up thinking that hip-hop death is a normal thing.”

The hip-hop icon’s comments arrive hours after Takeoff was fatally shot in Houston.

According to TMZ’s initial report, which cited police sources and several alleged witnesses, local officials were first notified of the shooting “shortly after 2:30 a.m.” Both Quavo and Takeoff were at the site, which is said to have been a bowling alley where a dice game was taking place.

At one point, an altercation is alleged to have started, followed by gunfire, although additional details regarding what transpired in the moments leading up to the shooting have not been made public.

Earlier tonight, Quality Control shared their official statement on the Migos rapper’s passing.

“Senseless violence and a stray bullet has taken another life from this world and we are devastated,” they wrote.

“Please respect his family and friends as we continue to process this monumental loss.”

  • “There’s still a second part to the prophecy” – Pastor who predicted death of Davido’s son

The news of Ifeanyi’s death shook Nigerian cyberspace to the core, with many heartbroken by the tragic incident.

A Nigerian clergyman, Prophet Samuel King, is currently trending online after his old Facebook post predicting singer, Davido’s son, Ifeanyi’s death resurfaced.

Davido’s three-year-old son died on Monday night after he drowned in a swimming pool in the singer’s home in Banana Island, Lagos state.

The news of Ifeanyi’s death shook Nigerian cyberspace to the core, with many heartbroken by the tragic incident.

Following Ifeanyi’s death, Davido’s foster brother revealed in a post on his Insta-stories that the family had earlier received a prophecy about the incident, but it was taken for granted.

Amid this, a post that was shared on Facebook in January by Prophet Samuel warning about the impending danger on Ifeanyi started making the rounds online.

In the post, he had asked the singer to pray against the arrow of death, especially against his son.

“PRAY FOR DAVID ADELEKE aka Davido . In a vision I saw 2022 with so many opportunities for him, reward and awards! This is the biggest year for him even until 2023! But let’s pray Against any arrow of death ESPECIALLY against his son! Any any close loved ones. God revealed this t

o me That it will happen if prayers are not MADE. I see T and Y as a very significant clue to this prophecy as well. THINGS ARE HAPPENING!” The post read.

However, the clergyman, has now spoken out about the prophecy in an updated post that he titled “GLOBAL ACCURATE PROPHECY CONFIRMED.”

Prophet Samuel, who claimed that the prophecy was in two parts, asked Davido to reach out to him to avert a mirror of this tragic incident in 2023.

    His words,

    “GLOBAL ACCURATE PROPHECY CONFIRMED|

Davido‘s Son has died , fulfilling the prophecy given in 7th of JANUARY 2022 by the PROPHET, with a call of warning to pray for his son! More highlights will still be given towards this PROPHECY as there are hidden CLUES that needs to be shared in prayers only with the family of David Adeleke and His family!”

  • Today in History: Tax burden killing businesses – Seth Terkper

Seth Terkper, a former finance minister, lamented the exorbitant taxes that Ghanaian companies must pay.

In his opinion, taxes today are much higher than they were during the previous NDC regime.

According to Seth Terkper, the government raised the energy sector levy and indirectly raised the value-added tax as of 2019. (VAT).

Seth Terkper, former Finance Minister during the erstwhile Mahama government, has contended that the tax burden remains the major bane of businesses under the tenure of the Akufo-Addo-led government, ABC News can report.

According to the former Finance Minister, businesses in Ghana are paying more taxes currently compared to what they paid during the administration of former President John Mahama.

He avers that this phenomenon is in contrast with what was promised to Ghanaians in the build-up to the 2016 general elections.

Speaking in an interview monitored by ABC News, Seth Terkper condemned the government for the taxes it has levied on Ghanaians and businesses since they took over the governance of the country in 2017.

The argument by Seth Terkper, however, is arguable considering the fact that the Akufo-Addo government scrubbed almost 17 ‘nuisance’ taxes in its first budget as a government.

To buttress his point, Seth Terkper advanced that government has within the time in government increased the Energy sector levy and indirectly increased the Value Added Tax (VAT).

Despite the government’s intervention, though some policies that have been lauded as innovative, aimed at improving the business climate in the country, Seth Terkper is of the view that little results have been recorded.

He mentioned that the recent port reforms did not bring the expected impact as envisaged suggesting that the benchmark value that slashed import duties by up to 50 percent this year has not necessarily helped all traders but rather increased the cost of transaction for some.

  • Your posture on suggestions made to revive the economy not encouraging – Kwesi Pratt

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo’s stance on proposals presented to him for how to resuscitate Ghana’s faltering economy, according to the managing editor of the publication The Insight, is not encouraging.

According to Mr. Kwesi Pratt, the president’s contempt for many of these proposals presented to him without malice is the main cause of the country’s current predicament.

The president’s attitude to proposals, particularly those regarding the removal of Ken Ofori Atta, the finance minister, and other of his appointees, was, he said, disagreeable.

Mr Pratt said for the president to describe the people who made these suggestions as people who are hungry and had no job to do was unpleasant, to say the least.

He argued that such comments must not come from a personality such as the president who is duty-bound to rally everybody around.

He said the president at this moment is the one supposed to call the people to action and not to describe them unpleasantly.

“How can everybody including the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MP) be hungry?” he questioned and wondered: “So, what is in God’s name can a personality like an economist Kwame Pianim of high repute be seeking to achieve by calling for the removal of the finance minister?”

He said the president is also part of the problem stemming from his posture on issues of national interest.

“People are arguing the finance minister is incompetent and the president’s posture is that the finance minister should use his incompetence to seal the International Monetary Fund deal before his removal,” Mr Pratt noted.

This posture, he added, is worrying and not encouraging people to do more for the state.

“Is this what the president is telling Ghanaians who are suffering from the indiscretion of the finance minister?” The Insight newspaper managing editor asked.

He posited: “Ghanaians do not want any long-term solutions but a short-term solution that will bring some reprieve to them in the wake of the economic challenges.”

He called on Ghanaians to be measured at this time of economic challenges and further called on them to eschew political rivalry by offering solutions that would take the country out of the current economic challenges.

Kwesi Pratt made these comments speaking on a local radio station on Tuesday, November 1, 2022

  • Akufo-Addo did not say he will sack Ofori-Atta, Adu Boahen – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu clarifies

In a statement he signed, Suame MP and Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu clarified some of what President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo pleaded with the Majority MPs to allow Ken Ofori-Atta to propose the 2023 budget and wrap up Ghana’s talks with the IMF.
The appeal was made following a press conference called by the majority of MPs calling for the resignation of the finance minister.

The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs claims that the president did not categorically state that he would fire Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and Minister of State at the Finance Ministry Charles Adu Boahen following the IMF negotiations and the reading and appropriation of the 2023 Budget when he met with Majority MPs.

He explained in a Joy News interview monitored by GhanaWeb that, “the President did not say that. To quote his words, he said ‘let’s finish with this, the IMF and the budget thereafter, we should hold on until after these’.”

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu continued that the president’s statement could result in an ‘either or’ decision.

“It could be. I mean, either of them is subject to interpretations that ‘okay hold on after the events then we come back and discuss,’ or ‘hold on after the event I will act.’

“’I will act’ may not necessarily mean that ‘I will do that’. According to what the President told us, you hold on until…so it could be that ‘I’ll come back to consider it’ or ‘I’ll give in to your demands’.

“The plea was – hold on until after these events, the IMF discussions and the budget. In fact, I even added when there appeared to be some unclarity about what happens after the presentation of the budget, I said no if the budget is presented by a person, you’d require that same person to shepherd the appropriations.

“And that is how come for the avoidance of doubt I said let us include the appropriation so that there’s no doubt in anybody’s mind that after the budget has been read then agitations will start again,” Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu noted.

About 95 NPP MPs demanded the immediate dismissal of the Finance Minister.

The MPs at a press conference stated that the continuous stay of Ken Ofori-Atta in office was delaying the IMF bailout the country is seeking due to the fact that the Minister has lost all credibility.

They demanded the President to either remove him or face a boycott of his business in Parliament.

The President, however, appealed to them for more time for the embattled Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to conclude negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) before any talks of resignation.

  • Plot to ‘crucify’ Ghana Gas CEO backfires

As the internal strife within the New Patriotic Party in the Western Region intensifies, an attempt by unidentified people to publicly humiliate Dr. Ben K. D. Asante, CEO of Ghana National Gas Company Limited, has begun to fail.

According to individuals aware with this development, the anonymous group hired some New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth to organize a protest against Dr. Asante, accusing him of failing to provide them with employment at the government organization.

On Sunday, October 30, when the Kundum Festival was being celebrated in Atoabo, party members, some of whom were carrying banners, nearly ruined the event by trying to air their frustrations regarding internal issues in the Ellembelle Constituency, according to the source.

What appeared more worrying, the source said was the grave disrespect these youth showed to Awulae Amihere Kpayinli II, the paramount chief of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area, Hon Kennedy Agyapong, the Board Chairman of Ghana Gas, Hon Freddy Blay, Board Chairman of GNPC, Hon Catherine Afeku, MMDCEs, and at the climax of the most revered festival in Nzemaland.

    Intervention

But it appears that the plot backfired as the intervention of the rank and file of the party at the time avoided what had been described as a very embarrassing situation. The conduct by the youth group has since been condemned.

“Although the incident was unfortunate, the few party members were trying to make a point concerning continuous discrimination against them based on internal party differences by some officers of Ghana National Gas Company Limited whose responsibility is to ensure access to job opportunities by qualified persons without any discrimination”, a statement released by the NPP in the Ellembelle Constituency read.

“We wish to assure the aggrieved persons that their issues have been discussed with the Board Chair and CEO of the Company and are being addressed accordingly. The Party in Ellembelle Constituency is therefore calling on aggrieved members to stop calling for the removal of the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana National Gas Company Limited with immediate effect since he cannot be blamed for rather the party officers within ellembele who are equally officers of the Ghana National Gas Company in the Western Region.”

    Apology

“By this release, we are rendering an unqualified apology to the CEO of Ghana National Gas Company Limited, Dr. Ben Asante, who has contributed to the development of the Ellembele District since taking office in 2017 for the attempt by the aggrieved persons to drag his name into disrepute.

We also wish to use this medium to apologize to Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli III, the Paramount Chief of Eastern Nzema Traditional Area as well as the District Chief Executive for Ellembelle, Hon. Kwasi Bonzoh for disregarding his intervention to stop the unfortunate incident. It is our strongest conviction that the Party will overcome the challenges and even emerge stronger to capture the Ellembelle Constituency Parliamentary seat for the New Patriotic in the 2024 General Election”, the statement concluded.

  • Today in History: We siphon fuel for survival – Tanker drivers admit

Drivers of fuel tankers acknowledged that they steal fuel because of their meager pay. To press their bosses for improved working conditions, they went on a sit-down strike.

It is true that we siphon, but it is not our responsibility, said George Nyaunu, president of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union.
We steal petrol because we are starving.

We won’t steal if we are paid handsomely, he remarked. We receive GH 1,500 every month, and that payment is irregular.

The National President of Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union (GNPTDU) has admitted that his members siphon fuel but that should not be blamed on them.

George Nyaunu said tanker drivers are poorly paid and so the only way of survival is to siphon in order to survive but not that they want to merely steal.

Gas Tanker Drivers Union (GTDU) of GNPTDU declared a sit-down strike, which has led to the shortage of gas in some parts of Accra.

Members of the Gas Tanker Drivers Union laid down their tools on Thursday, October 29.

Several persons seeking to purchase LPG for domestic and commercial purposes were stranded at the various vending points across the country on Saturday, October 31.

It took the interventions of the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations for them to halt the strike on Sunday.

They are expected to meet the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo, to deliberate on the issue and resolve it.

Speaking to the issue on Monday Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Nana Okyere Awurukuo, Mr. Nyaunu admitted that “it’s true we siphon but it is not our fault. We siphon fuel because of hunger”.

He said, “if we are paid well, we will not steal. We are being paid GH¢1,500 a month and that does not come regularly”.

Mr. Nyaunu wondered: “We are not being paid, how do you want us to survive?”

    Police harassments

The president also complained of harassments and extortions by the police when they are transporting fuel to the various destinations.

“The police worry us. They don’t have the gadgets to detect whether the fuel is contaminated or not yet they harass us and extort from us.”

  • Female representation on boards of GSE-listed companies still low

Women hold only 25% of board seats and only 27% of non-executive director seats among the 35 businesses listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange in 2022, which is the same as in 2021.
This information can be found in the 2022 Board Diversity Index Report, which TheBoardroom Africa and the Ghana Stock Exchange jointly released this week (GSE).

These statistics, according to the report, show that efforts to promote gender diversity have stopped since the previous year.
The survey also finds that corporate secretary, which is not a board-director function, is the most frequent position held by women across the majority of Ghana’s listed companies.

Meanwhile, research shows that companies with 30 percent or more female non-executive directors are likely to result in an average of 15 percent increase of women in board chair and executive roles. “It is critical that women not only have a seat at the table but also occupy positions of leadership in these spaces to ensure continuous progress – and this has to be led by boards,” the report said.

It noted that while an increasing number of Ghanaian companies are responding to the call for more gender-diverse boardrooms, the overall gender gap among senior executives still remains wide.

Per the report, 61.5 percent of the industry sectors have more than 30 percent women on their boards – a 15.4 percent increase from 2021, and by international standards 30 percent is the minimum to reap the benefits of boardroom diversity.

Having 30 percent women on boards, the report said, is the pivotal point at which minority voices become heard – it also represents the minimum target recognised by the Board Diversity Charter. However, this threshold remains a minimum target, not a ceiling. “While we recognise the companies meeting this standard, much remains to be done in working toward gender parity – the ultimate goal,” the report stated.

Indeed, it noted that more than one-third (38 percent) of companies still have one or zero females on their boards, indicating a decrease by 9 percent from 2021. But that gap still needs to be bridged. In terms of sectors that have more women in their boardroom, the report said the advertising & communications, fast-moving consumer goods, mining/natural resources and telecommunications sectors have the highest number of women represented in the boardroom.

However, in terms of the aggregate number of women directors, the financial services sector outperformed all with 45 percent of all female directors in GSE-listed companies being from the sector. Per the breakdown, women make up 12 percent of Chairs; 13 percent of CEOs/MDs; 17 percent of CFOs; and 6 percent of COOs on Ghana’s listed boards.

The report observed that there has been an increase in the number of CEOs/MDs and CFOs by 1 and 13 percent respectively from 2021; however, there has been a decrease in the number of Chairs and COOs by 3 and 4 percent respectively from 2021. It also notes that almost one-third (32 percent) of Ghana’s listed companies have boards featuring at least 30 percent female board directors, an increase of 3 percent from 2021.

Commenting on the methodology, Marcia Ashong, Founder and CEO of TheBoardroom Africa, said: “As we acknowledge the progress made so far, we remind stakeholders to continuously press for progress to solidify and expand on recent strides. We advocate that the Government of Ghana should encourage business leaders to have boardrooms that are fully representative of their stakeholders by signing the Board Diversity Charter; and also promote gender-conscious board appointments in state-owned companies to ensure that, as a country, we can fully reap the benefits of diversity”.

Touching on the 2022 Board Diversity Index’s significance, Abena Amoah – incoming Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange said: “The Ghana Stock Exchange is an integral part of the Ghanaian economy, and we aim to be at the forefront of sustainable, diverse and inclusive economic growth. We are delighted to see more and more companies respond to the call for diversity, and we further pledge to work with all stakeholders to ensure that Ghanaian boards are more inclusive and effective”.

  • Ashanti Teachers forum congratulates new GES Boss

The Ashanti Teachers Forum, on Monday congratulated the newly appointed Dr Eric Nkansah, the Acting Director General of the Ghana Education Service.

The Forum called on the teaching fraternity to rally their support behind the new Director General to discharge his mandate in an efficient and effective manner.

Mr Michael Mensah, the President of the Forum, said this when a delegation of members of the Forum paid a courtesy call on Dr Nkansah in Accra.

“As concerned teachers in the Ashanti Region, we thought it wise to pay him a visit and congratulate him on his appointment at the highest level of the Service.

“We have seen him visiting some schools within the Accra metropolis and talking about his plans and policies for stakeholders in the sector, which is worth emulating as a leader,” he said.

He said, ” Dr Nkansah is a true educationist who has taught at Kintanpom Senior High School and we believe he has the urge to spearhead the affairs of the Service.”

With his background in the banking sector, Mr Mensah believed that the new GES Director General would work seamlessly to facilitate the Service’s financial issues.

Dr Nkansah appointment was met with opposition, mostly from a section of the union bodies.

Mr Mensah, however, encouraged him to be steadfast and see the criticism as a challenge to be focused on and work harder for the growth of the Service.

Dr Nkansah responded by thanking President Akufo-Addo for the confidence reposed in him and promised to serve diligently while adhering to the service’s tenets.

He pledged to prioritise the welfare of teaching and non-teaching staff of pre-tertiary institutions across the country.

He was hopeful of addressing issues relating to promotion, upgrading, and other pertinent concerns to build confidence among members to give their best and improve learning outcomes.

“We need to create 21st century skills where students will be taught to be critical thinkers to be fit for purpose,” he said.

He stated that the vision of President Akufo-Addo was to increase the transition rate from Senior High School to tertiary education and noted that this could be achieved by a concerted effort by all stakeholders in the education space.

Dr Nkansah was appointed by President Akufo-Addo, effective October 19, 2022, pursuant to Section 19(1), 2(a) and (b) of the Pre-tertiary Education Act, 2020(Act 1049).

  • Agric minister begins 2nd leg of regional tours

On Monday, October 31, 2022, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the minister of food and agriculture, began his regional working tour.

After a series of successful working tours to various parts of the nation earlier this year, the second leg has just been completed.

The minister will have the chance to speak with farmers, input merchants, and directors during the visit.

Dr. Afriyie Akoto, who stressed that the government was prepared to tackle the bird flu outbreaks, calmed the anxieties of poultry producers during his first port of visit in the Western North Region.

According to him, the disease affected farmers in Western, Western North, Central, Volta and Oti Regions.

He disclosed that a total of 280 farms have so far been affected by the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) with 997,743 birds destroyed.

He also stated that the government had paid some GHS15,630,913.33 as compensation to affected poultry farmers.

To control the disease, Dr Afriyie Akoto said the government had approved an amount of GHS43,984,017.70, of which GHS20,000,000.00 had already been released.

He further noted that approval has also been given to recruit some 1,100 veterinary officers, stating that, 550 out of the 1,100, have already been recruited and posted.

He said the remaining 550 were yet to be recruited and posted within a period of two years.

In this vein, the Minister advised farmers against accepting birds or eggs from other farms onto their farms.

He also admonished the poultry farmers to thoroughly wash down with soap and water immediately after handling birds, urging them to confine their birds from other birds.

He called on the farmers to regularly wash poultry equipment, bury or burn dead birds, and keep waste away from the farmhouse.

For his part, the Director of the Veterinary Services Directorate (VSD) at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Dr Patrick Abakeh, cautioned that compensations for bird flu-infested farms will not be paid to farmers who fail to register with the VSD.

He, therefore, called on the farmers to register their farms with the VSD. This, he explained, will give the authorities the knowledge on the number of farmers and quantity of birds affected.

Additionally, he asked the farmers to acquire certification from the VSD to qualify them for compensation following the bird flu outbreaks.

From Western North, the Minister will head to the Western, Central, Oti and Volta regions.

However, the strength of the team will be tested against Switzerland in a friendly on November 17 before the team arrives in Doha on November 19.

  • Cedi depreciation: BoG’s illegal money to govt chasing the dollar – Adongo

Isaac Adongo, a member of parliament for Bolgatanga Central, claims that the Bank of Ghana illegally injected Ghana cedis into the economy, which is the cause of the cedi’s ongoing decline versus the dollar.

According to Mr. Adongo, the issue arises as a result of the Bank of Ghana’s disobedience and contempt for the regulations governing the Central Bank’s funding of the budget.

“The key strand of Ghana’s inflationary targeting framework is what we call fiscal dominance over monetary policy. What this means is that the Bank of Ghana should be restrained from giving money to the government to finance the budget. That is why its law stipulates that they cannot give more than 5% of government’s previous year’s revenue at any point in time in cumulative lending,” he explained.

“Last year, 2021, they ended the year with 35 billion Ghana cedis, and as we speak today, they are heading toward the same 35 billion, which would bring it to 70 billion. When you do that, there are two things that happen. One is that monies that you have pumped into the economy, the cedi in the economy, is what is chasing the dollar now,” Mr. Adongo told Starr News

He continued: “If you have over 70 billion of monies that do not belong to the economy, in the economy and chasing the dollar, the dollar would definitely collapse the cedi. That is caused by the Bank of Ghana itself. Two, when you do that, then you need to mop up the excess liquidity; you need to find a way to get that money back into the banking sector and probably back to the Bank of Ghana.

In doing so, you must continuously increase the policy rate. Now, in the end, it is the businessman who gets hurt because he must be able to find a business that can give him 35% of returns of margins to pay the interest and even leave something to survive on.”

According to Mr. Adongo, the Central Bank’s action has therefore resulted in an increase in interest rates and the cost of doing business.

  • Cement prices increase again?

According to reports, cement is now selling for GHC 95, up from GHC 80 around two weeks ago.

Ghanaian broadcaster Bridget Otoo complained that the impact on the country’s businesses’ ability to survive the price increase has grown intolerable.

In a tweet, Bridget Otoo remarked that since August 2022, the product’s price has grown by more than 30 cedis.

She called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take charge of the economy and reduce the hardships for Ghanaians.

“Are you people not tired? How can you increase cement again to 95 cedis?
@NAkufoAddo pretend to be in charge and let things work. Our businesses are collapsing! How can cement prices go up by more than 30 cedis since August? how?” she wrote.

Manufacturers of the product had attributed the upward adjustment to the depreciation of the cedi.

According to them, most of their raw materials are imported, therefore as the cedi falls, production cost increases as well.

  • Romelu Lukaku, 5 other active footballers who have degrees

The life of a footballer is short as the average footballer gets to play actively for 10 years. While many go to real estate, hotels, and other investment ventures with the money they get while playing, only a handful pursue a career in academia.

Footballers across the globe do not have a reputation for intelligence as there is an ill-conceived perception that unintelligent people chase a career in football but there are those who have made themselves to be an exception to that rule.

Today we look at six footballers who are actively playing the sport and are on top of their game but have still managed to get degrees and other academic certificates even with a very busy tight schedule.

Giorgio Chiellini is not just a genius on the Football pitch. The Italian defender graduated with a Masters’ Degree in Business Administration from The University of Turin’s School of Management and Economics.13 Jun 2022.

According to the talent manager, the leader of the Shatta Movement managed to secure some major collaborations with international artiste through the help of some members of his team, including those he has disrespected and fought with.

Shatta Wale has a song with American singer, and songwriter, John Legend, Dancehall greats, Vybz Kartel and Popcaan as well as Stefflon Don, this is according to Bullgod.

Explaining why he had to leak the possible song list on the yet-to-be-released album, Bullgod in a Facebook post sighted by GhanaWeb wrote that the fans can no longer be starved because Shatta has held on to the GOG album for over 3 years.

His former manager added that releasing the album will help him top the charts instead of beefing him or trying to be ungrateful after his sacrifices for his brand.

The two who have been engaged in a dirty fight on social media have made some damning allegations against each other with the famous singer discrediting Bullgod’s contribution to his brand development.

Read Bullgod’s message to Shatta Wale below:

  • How Sulley Muntari turned down his mother’s wish of playing Kotoko to play in Europe

Former Black Stars midfielder, Sulley Ali Muntari has revealed that he had to take a risk of ‘disrespecting’ his ever-loving mother, Hajia Kande to become successful.

Sulley’s love for his deceased mother is an open secret and he reaffirmed it in an interview with Dan Kweku Yeboah: “she was my everything, she is my everything and now she has given me the strength to take care of my siblings which I was ready for.”

In the interview, Sulley said there is one person he cannot turn deaf ears to and that is his mother, “for my mum, whatever she says I do it.”

But he recalled a time when for the very first time in his life, he had to choose between his mother’s wish and his ambition of playing in Europe.

Sulley Muntari narrated that, his mother wanted him to play for Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko while he was yearning to play in Europe because he believed it was the only way to change the fortunes of his family.

He said he almost signed for Kotoko as his mum wished, but he missed Kotoko’s Chief Executive officer, Hebert Mensah at the entrance.

“There was one time we went to Kumasi. We were going to Herbert Mensah but while our car was entering, his car was going out. So, I missed him. I would have definitely signed if I had met him.”

After not tying himself to Kotoko, Sulley took the opportunity to be more thoughtful about his career and how he could change his family’s situation.

Following a long thoughtful moment, he decided to “disrespect” his mother for the very first time.

“But then I came back and sat down. At that age, looking at my mum, and my siblings where we were coming from, I was like ‘for the first time in my life, I will disrespect my mum’. Meaning I won’t listen to what she was saying and pause (Playing for Kotoko) to have a great future. I could see there was a future for it, in the long term.”

He said he never went back to look for Herbet, because he wanted to play in Europe like Michael Essien, Derek Boateng, and a couple of others who were all at the U-20 camp.

“No, they(Kotoko) didn’t see me again. So when I went back to camp, Sly spoke to me. I saw Derek, Essien, and Obodae. They were young and they played for Ajax, Panatheniacos, Bastia and all these big teams. Ibrahim Razak was also playing for Italy. And also I thought about it, looking at old Kotoko, Awudu Adama, even Joe Henricks wasn’t there, Prince Adu Poku, the Stephen Oduros and the likes, top, top players. For me, I would come from school to play only two matches and they will put me on the bench. Because I’ve seen top, top Kotoko players who couldn’t make any impact, so from colts straight to the first team was going to be difficult. So I thought of all these aspects and I said no. Mum, I’m sorry. There was no one cedi at home. No cedi to buy foodstuff and all that,” he said.

Sulley continued that even though his mum was disappointed, his decision was the right way to make his mother whip the benefits of her investment in his career.

“Yes(she was disappointed), but she had invested her whole life(in me). I can come from camp and there is no money. The last one that she should have spent on my siblings, she will say “take it”. Then she will go and hustle from the side. So all of these things pushed to make my own decision to go and I’ve never regretted it.”

Sulley said Hajia Kande came around after he left the shores of Ghana when Alhaji Sly Tetteh secured trials for him at Manchester United.

“She was angry a little bit but after when I left the country(she accepted it). Sly took me right away to Manchester United.”

Although his mother passed away in 2021, she lived to enjoy the fruit of her investments. Sulley is one of the wealthy ex-Ghanaian footballers but prefers to keep a low profile on his wealth.

  • Drama in court as judge threatens to release Aisha’s accomplices

Drama broke out in an Accra High Court, on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, during a hearing involving Aisha Huang and her cronies.

The judge hearing the case threatened to release the accomplices either “conditionally or unconditionally” due to lack of interpreters.

Aisha Huang’s partners in crime, Shi Yang, alias Philip, Li Wei Guo and Shi Mei Zhi have been charged with engaging in small-scale mining without a licence.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Tuyen, a Vietnamese national who is also an accomplice, is charged with remaining in Ghana after his permit had expired.

Although the accused persons have denied the charges, the court could not take the plea of the Vietnamese because there was no (Vietnamese) interpreter.

During Tuesday’s sitting, the court stated that it had been unable to find a Vietnamese interpreter and that the Chinese interpreter who had previously been in court was out of town.

Frustrated by the turnout of events, the judge said: “I will adjourn the case for the last time, if we don’t get these interpreters (Chinese and Vietnamese), I will release the accused persons either conditionally or unconditionally,” the judge said.

Explaining the circumstances leading to this development, the Registrar of the Court said a letter had been written to the Institute of Languages for a Vietnamese interpreter. However, the efforts have yielded no positive results.

Also, the Registrar said the Court had reached out to the Chinese Interpreter who was out of the jurisdiction, and he had agreed to do the interpretation via Zoom but failed to answer his calls during sitting.

Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned to November 21.

  • Energy Consultant predicts shortage of petroleum products

If the government does not take quick action to slow the rate of cedi depreciation, energy consultant and former member of parliament for Damango Mutawakilu Adam predicts a shortage of petroleum products in the nation.

The former ranking member of the Energy Committee in Parliament suggested that the government remove various levies on petroleum goods, such as the Special Petroleum Tax, as a preventative step.

He claims that the Special Petroleum Tax’s use to the Ghanaian people has outlived the reason it was instituted.

“The government needs to prioritize how it handles foreign exchange issues. I know the cocoa syndicated loans may come, but how long will it take, and what are the expectations for future foreign currencies? Apart from the cocoa syndicated loans, the next one is the IMF coming in to help. How long will it take us to have an agreement? That is very unclear.

“So the government must take pragmatic measures to ensure that there is foreign currency available to the BDCs to be able to import finished products into the country. If not, we will have a serious challenge with the availability of petroleum products,” Mr. Mutawakilu stated on Starr Today with Joshua Kodjo Mensah Tuesday, October 1, 2022.

He continued: “But what is causing the increase in fuel prices is the rate of the depreciation of the cedi. It is what is contributing significantly to the increases in prices of petroleum products in the country. Not the international prices.”

According to him, the international crude price is now above the benchmark that was captured by the Finance Minister in the 2022 Budget.

“So there is definitely a windfall for our export of crude. As President Mahama indicated, within the first quarter, we raked in almost 732 million dollars. In Ghana cedi [it] is about 8.7 billion Ghana cedis which is more than we expected for the whole year. So that indicates we have enough windfall from our crude exports.

“The government must move in to make sure that it is using this money to cushion Ghanaians. Because the way the price is moving is quite alarming, which is not the fault of the ordinary Ghanaian. No, it is the fault of the managers of the economy, so the government must cushion Ghanaians with respect to the fuel prices,” the former lawmaker indicated.

  • Group breaks into NDC’s headquarters, threaten party executive over prepaid meter

A mob of protestors, on October 31, broke into the national headquarters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Adabraka in Accra.

The group clad in red, who were fuming with rage, is reported to have headed straight to the 3rd floor office of the Deputy General Secretary, Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, and removed a prepaid metre.

In a statement dated November 1, the Party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, revealed that the spokesman of the unknown group “threatened to deal with the Deputy General Secretary for allegedly installing a prepaid metre in her office.”

According to the leadership of the party, it would not overlook the “blatant act of thuggery and criminality”, thus will take immediate steps and engage the law enforcement agencies to have the perpetrators punished, as well as their sponsors.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah stressed that no member of the party has the right to launch an attack against an executive.

He explained that since the executives of the party act as a single unit, any attack on a national officer is an attack on the entire leadership of the party.

“The party will take additional steps to identify all who entered the premises to carry out this dastardly act and to subject them to the disciplinary measures provided by the party’s constitution,” the General Secretary pledged.
