  • Ehiamankyene Epicentre on a sustainable path of eradicating poverty

The Ehiamankyene Centre in the Eastern Region has been declared self-sufficient and established on a sustainable path to eradicating hunger in eleven villages, according to The Hunger Project, Ghana, (THP-G).

The eleven communities from various cultural origins, including Krobos, Ewes, and Akans, were brought together under the Epicentre in the Fanteakwa South District to take action to address their basic needs and progress toward self-reliance.

Mr Samuel Afrane, Country Director of THP-G, said that the Ehiamankyene epicentre, which run from 2009 to 2014 and 2019 to 2022, was successful due to the contributions of two Australian investors, Robertsons Foundation and Hey Tiger Chocolate Processing Company.

He was speaking at the celebration of self-reliance held at the Ehiamankyene Epicentre, which was organised by the Hunger Project in collaboration with the Hey Tiger Chocolate Processing Company.

He said an epicentre received a self-reliance status when it obtained an evaluation score of 80 per cent or higher overall under the following eight goals: community mobilisation, empowerment of women and girls, improved literacy and education, improved health, improved water and sanitation, improved climate-smart, reduced hunger, and reduced poverty.

Despite the communities’ strong history of success, Mr Afrane urged community members in the epicentre to focus on protecting girls in order to prevent teenage pregnancy and early marriage.

Mr Isaac N. Numoh, the Trainer of Trainees of Ehiamankyene Epicenter, described the development of an epicentre building as a major benefit to the communities that surround it.

“The building, which looks like ‘L’ shape has a food bank, now an agro-chemical shop, clinic, community bank, a kindergarten, also used as a library, nurses quarters and a toilet facility”, he said.

Initially, he noted that the epicentre community consisted of 15 communities; however, four communities failed to discharge their part of responsibilities and were therefore removed from the epicentre community.

Mr Ernest Ofosu, the Fanteakwa South District Chief Executive (DCE), said there had been no recorded cases of maternal mortality since the installation of the clinic at the epicentre.

“Before 2005, because there was no health facility serving these communities, they had to travel as far as Begoro where there was a health facility,” he said. “Therefore, the natives patronized more of the traditional treatment.”

Adding, “pregnant women usually suffered a lot because they wait till their situation gets critical before they visit the hospital because it was far. There was an increase in maternal mortality rate.”

Ms Berenice Owen-Jones, the Australian Ambassador to Ghana, stated that her country would be delighted to work with the Ehiamankyene centre in the future to achieve greater heights.

She praised the communities’ eagerness to work relentlessly to eradicate hunger and poverty, as well as to promote women’s empowerment and self-sufficiency.

Meanwhile, the Australian investors and THP-G have planted 13 cocoa plants and Two coconut plants to symbolise the construction of a self-sufficient epicentre at Ehiamankyene.

Since 1995, The Hunger Project Ghana has been enabling partner communities to overcome hunger and poverty through its comprehensive approach to rural development, known as the Epicenter concept.

  • Inability to meet basic needs affecting parental control

Mama Hodzige II, Central Tongu Director of the National Commission for Civic Education, (NCCE) has said parents should consider the basic needs of their children requisite for the needed control over their upbringing.

She said challenges with securing the essential life needs of children affected the effectiveness of the roles of parents and caused honor and authority to be shared with peers and other entities that could offer any help.

Mama Hodzige was addressing the community of Kpogede in the Central Tongu District during a parent-child inter-generational dialogue on sexual and reproductive health and rights, organized by the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG).

She said the responsibility over the healthcare, food, shelter and other needs should become paramount for parents, and advised them not to lose the parental bonds, but strengthen to build an impermeable family unit.

“The responsibility over food, healthcare, and other basic needs should be paramount for parents. The inability to meet these things affects the parents’ control over their children,” she stated.

The engagement gave voice to parents and children who had been assembled at the compound of the headman of the community.

Children shared challenges with upkeep, a situation not uncommon in the rural agrarian economies, and which lends wind to early sexual activity including abuse among the youth.

Communities in the Tongu districts ranked among the highest in teen pregnancies and child marriages, and the PPAG has been actively pursuing behavioural change in selected endemic areas in collaboration with stakeholders including the social welfare, police domestic violence unit, and the NCCE.

This comes under a five-year program of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and which is being supported by Global Affairs Canada.

Barbara Amartefio, a social worker in the district, spoke of the need to enhance parent-child bond to be able to effectively ensure should upbringing.

She said new media significantly affected parent-child communication and should be used to educate children on social issues including sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Kenneth Goka, Project Officer of the PPAG, told parents there was no end to child upbringing, and said it was a continuous activity that must prevail on behavioral change.

He said the vision of reducing teenage pregnancy and early marriages would help safeguard the future of the nation and advised children to heed advice from elders and stakeholders.

Christopher Makam, PPAG Field Officer in the District, told the Ghana News Agency that poor parenting had been found to be one of the major causes of sexual and gender-based violence, and that the intergenerational dialogue should be able to help parents bridge communication gaps to their children.

He said parents were being encouraged not to consider the child’s inquiries around sex and reproduction intimidating, and to realize the cost of ignorance.

“This forum will help improve the dialogue among parents and their children. It will help expose barriers to communication in the home and will be able to identify solutions to the barriers,” he said.

He said stakeholders within the communities played vital roles and were the “back bones of social change,” and that it was important to empower them to help encourage parents.

The PPAG runs a “sisters club” in the various communities it operates, providing livelihood empowerment skills for adolescent girls and teen mothers, and raising ambassadors of sexual and reproductive health and rights.

John Fiagbenu, Headman of the community told the gathering that the youth were considered the future, and that education should continue to be regarded the way to elevating the status of the area.

He commended the efforts of the PPAG and their stakeholders, particularly in attempting to deal with the menace of drug and substance abuse blanketing youths of the farming community.

  • Tema records five fatal road crashes in September 2022

The Tema Police Region in the month of September 2022, recorded five fatal road crashes, 44 serious and 41 minor road incidents, a provisional report from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed.

The data available to the Ghana News Agency in Tema shows that the data formed part of a total of 1,273 road crashes recorded nationwide with 160 being fatal, 413 serious, and 700 minor incidents.

The national figure of 1,273 represents a 0.71 per cent increase over the same period -September 2021 which recorded 1,264 total road crashes.

Meanwhile,t has said that people should stop referring to road crashes as accidents as according to him, not all road crashes were accidents, therefore, it was unacceptable to refer to all crashes as accidents.

Mr Afriford explained accident as the cause of a crash could only be confirmed after investigations had been carried out by the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD) and road crash investigators.

He said this at the Ghana News Agency-Tema Office and MTTD Road Safety Campaign platform noting that an accident meant the crash occurred through no fault of the driver.

Such accidents, he said, could be due to mechanical faults such as brake failure, or other factors including driving on a foreign material on the road.

He explained that the different types of crashes included vehicle-to-vehicle, human-to-vehicle crashes, human crashes, pedestrian knockdowns, and murder or suicidal crashes.

Mr Afriford indicated that vehicle-to-vehicle crashes, also known as a head-on collision, occurred when two vehicles collide with each other, while human-to-vehicle crashes involved humans having direct contact with the vehicle during a crash.

He noted that a crash, especially in a head-on collision could also lead to a human internal crash in which internal bleeding could occur due to a brain crashing with the skull, or a broken internal bone getting into contact with a tissue, the heart, or other organs.

He explained that suicidal crashes involved people internationally causing a crash to commit suicide due to some problems they might be having.

He urged pedestrians and road users to be extra cautious when using the road to avoid any accident.

  • Licensed orphanage homes in distress as donor support dwindles

A basic school set up by the New Life Nungua Children’s Home located at Nungua in the Greater Accra Region to educate children under their care has been shut down for the past seven months due to lack of funds.

The school was set up in 2010 to offer quality education to children and help eliminate the stigmatisation against them when they were enrolled in public schools.

A total of 92 children have been admitted by the Orphanage and since the establishment of the Home in 2000, it had relied solely on donor funds to operate, but since the COVID-19 pandemic struck, donations have dwindled significantly.

Nii Afotey Botwe II, Founder of the Orphanage Home, told the Ghana News Agency, that the situation had taken a toll on the academic performance of the children as some of them complained about being stigmatised in the schools in which they have been enrolled.

“We pay special attention to the children in our school such that we didn’t keep more than 10 children in a class. But things are difficult for us, so, we had to shut down and enrol the children in nearby schools.

“Their mates call them names and that affects their studies. That is why we set up the school so they could concentrate on their studies and avoid the stigma,” he said.

The Orphanage currently caters for 92 children. The Home solely relies on donor support to cater for the needs of the children as well as pay for utility bills.

Nii Botwe II, said the Home required at least GHS30,000 monthly to effectively operate.

He said the Home had suspended its quarterly programme where it supported Persons Living with Disability with food, clothing, and other essential needs due to the decline in resources.

“The food we have in stock now can only last for two months and we appeal to individuals and organisations to come to our aid because we are struggling to survive,” Nii Botwe II said.

He appealed to the Government to exempt licensed Orphanage Homes from payment of utilities to cushion them under the current economic circumstances.

An engagement with some other orphanages paints a disturbing picture of the challenges facing these homes under the current economic hardships as some of them have still not recovered from the challenges occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Give To Eat Missionary Work, Ghana, located at Agona Nkum in the Central Region has established Ghana’s first Teenage Mothers Home, where it has integrated three classrooms to educate 71 children from Crechè, KG, and Preschool.

The NGO supports a total of 201 children located in the Central, Eastern, Volta, and Greater Accra Regions. The Organisation caters for their food, school, and medical costs, and assists them with monthly stipends.

The Management of the Organisation said the COVID-19 pandemic slashed its donor income by nearly 50 per cent, and the current recession, inflation, and energy crises worldwide had decreased its donations “drastically”.

Reverend Dr Kingsley Arthur, President, of Give To Eat Mission, Ghana, said the Organisation has been exploring innovative strategies to sustain its operations.

“We are now using alternative means to generate income for sustainable humanitarian work. We are involved in agriculture, planting for food which flows into feeding the numerous children in our Mother-Child Home, the residence of teenage mothers and their children,” he said.

Data from the Department of Social Welfare indicate that currently there are about 3,460 children in 124 Orphanage Homes, out of which 69 have been licensed.

These homes provide alternative care in non-family-based group settings, such as children’s homes and villages, orphanages, and shelters for an emergency, or temporary care.

Ghana has signed onto the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and has also passed the Children’s Act, 1998, all of which recognises the establishment of Care Homes for the development of the rights and well-being of the child particularly orphans who lacked family care and fosterage.

The Children’s Act states that under no circumstance should a person below the age of 15 be allowed to work or fend for himself or herself.

When children are neglected, they are likely to end up on the streets and are exposed to all manner of activities that hamper their growth, their welfare, and become a threat to national security.

A 2021 UNICEF report titled: “Children Living in Residential Care” found that only one-third of children in residential care had foundational reading skills, while a much lower proportion had developed foundational math skills.

Without the contributions of Orphanages, thousands of children without family care may have ended up on the streets, which has its consequences on the welfare of the child and national security.

Amid the pressing economic hardship, failure on the part of the State, organisations, and individuals to go to the aid of licensed orphanage homes to sustain their operations could hamper efforts to build an inclusive society that guarantees the welfare and protection of all children.

Efforts to get the Department of Social Welfare to contribute to the discussion proved futile.

  • Claims my outfit is frustrating importers ‘unfounded’ – Deputy Finance Minister

Accusations that Abena Osei-office Asare’s is upsetting customers at Ghana’s ports, according to the deputy finance minister, are unfounded.

She was responding to a debate on Asempa FM in Accra that seemed to imply that her Ministry had declined to sign letters returning some containers to their individual importers.

Osei-Asare thinks that the Ministry’s new initiatives to improve openness in the port restoration process are mostly to blame for the difficulties that the majority of clients are currently experiencing.

While urging the public to disregard such allegations she affirmed that neither she nor any officer at the Finance Ministry can be cited for any wrongdoing.

Read the Minister’s full statement below:

HON DEP. MINISTER SETS THE RECORDS STRAIGHT on EKO SII SEN – 27th October 2022

My attention has been drawn to a discussion on your radio programme, Eko Sii Sen, in which my name was mentioned as having refused to sign letters restoring some containers to their importers. The manner in which my name was mentioned sought to impute some wrongdoing on my part in this regard.

I write to state for your and your listeners’ benefit that while I appreciate the anxiety that people have over the new measures introduced by the Ministry of Finance to ensure transparency in the restoration process of items that have stayed beyond their stipulated time at the ports, there is nothing untoward and the officials at the Finance Ministry are available to explain and answer queries both general and particular relating to the said process.

In the meantime, I say that, I HAVE NOT FAILED, REFUSED, OR NEGLECTED TO SIGN ANY LETTER WHICH AFTER HAVING GONE THROUGH THE WHOLE PROCESS HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY OFFICE

  • It’s unfair to blame Ofori Atta for Ghana’s economic woes – Lawyer

According to a lawyer, Ghana’s economic problems should not be solely attributed to Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Last week, Kwame Adomako stated the Russia-Ukraine war was largely to blame for the economic difficulties in an interview with Accra-based Hello FM.

But he added that he was certain that the besieged Minister had reached his breaking point when it appeared that a group of NPP MPs had publicly demanded his dismissal.

“Can we blame Ken for what has happened? In all seriousness can we blame him? Is he the one that started the war? The war was not started by him and it was not reasonable foreseeable … you cannot blame Ken,” he stressed.

  • Ghana defender Daniel Amartey features as Leicester City lose to Man City

Black Stars defender Daniel Amartey was in action for Leicester City in their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Amartey, who lasted the entire duration of the game was one of the standout players for the Foxes at the King Power Stadium.

Brendan Rodgers had clearly set up his team to do a containing job on the reigning champions and it had worked effectively until De Bruyne curled a magnificent strike into the top corner from 25 yards four minutes after half-time.

De Bruyne’s goal was reward for City’s dominance, even though they missed the killer touch of the absent Erling Haaland, who has been suffering from a fever and a foot injury.

Leicester almost equalised when Youri Tielemans struck a volley from a corner that was turned on to the bar by Manchester City keeper Ederson.

The defeat sees Leicester City slip down the league table to 18th after 13 matches played so far.

Amartey has made 10 league appearances for Leicester this season.

  • Planting for food and jobs boosts food security and agriculture growth

According to Mrs. Cecilia Kagya- Agyemang, the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs (PfFJs) initiative has increased agricultural growth and improved national food security.

She stated that the program’s benefits have grown significantly, including the plenty of food in the nation, and added that another goal was to modernize the agricultural industry in order to increase job possibilities and lower poverty in the nation.

Speaking during a regional joint sector assessment on maintaining PfFJ gains for a resilient national food system in Techiman, Bono East Region, Mrs. Kagya-Agyemang made this statement.

Participants were drawn from the five municipalities and six districts in the region and they included agriculture officer, farmers and other stakeholders.

She said sustaining the PfFJs’ gains through stakeholder support in promoting agricultural sector activities would greatly mitigate poverty.

Mrs Kagya-Agyemang noted, however, that the outbreak of the COVID-19 and the effects of Russian-Ukraine war had resulted in the high cost of fertilizer and fuel leading to the limited use of inorganic fertilizer.

It is against that background, she said it had become imperative for government and stakeholders to take actions that would sustain the gains of PfFJs.

Mrs Kagya-Agyemang therefore encouraged farmers to continue with the application of organic fertilizers since they were less costly and could also assist in promoting shifting from inorganic to organic fertilizer usage for quality crop production.

In a presentation, Mr Eric Kontomah, the Bono East Regional Crop Officer said the PfFJs focused on growing cereal, leguminous and vegetable crops such as maize, rice, sorghum, soybean, groundnuts, cowpea, tomatoes, onions, pepper, cabbage, cucumber, lettuce and carrots.

Mr Kontomah reiterated the PfFJs’ gains further covered increased use of inorganic fertilizers, use of improved seeds due to climate variation, improved extension services and increased awareness and adoption of diverse organic fertilizers such as foliage use by farmers.

He appealed for adequate recruitment of agriculture extension officers, provision of electronic registration for farmers under the PfFJs programme in the southern sector, recruitment of adequate staff to safeguard the inputs distribution to farmers at the various sales points in the districts and improving road network in the region for holistic improvement of agricultural activities.

  • Has Ashanti Region become the hub of economic protests?

How the NPP stronghold of Ashanti Region is evolving into a center for economic protests.

Undoubtedly, the Ashanti Region plays a significant role in the election success of the governing New Patriotic Party, NPP, but in recent weeks and months, it has emerged as a focal point for unrest over economic hardship.

The region experienced a spike in political unrest long before the economy-related protests, ranging from the infrastructure deficit to the failure to keep political commitments.

The attacks on Suame Member of Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu by Suame Magazine artisans who were protesting the poor condition of their roads are typical examples.

Before that, the Mampongteng Chief threatened to lead a protest against the government over the abandonment of infrastructure projects in the area.

Then there was also the Ashanti youth group so-called that threatened to campaign against all MPs in the region because the region was not benefiting from their presence in the legislature.

In the past week, the region has hogged national headlines with business people issuing threats over an economic crunch that the government insists it is not entirely blamable for and which it is working assiduously to resolve.

GhanaWeb looks at four instances where the Ashanti Region has protested against the government for economic reasons.

Traders bloc threaten to close shops

According to a Citi FM report, some trader groups and importers in the regional capital, Kumasi, are threatening to shut their businesses for two weeks to protest the continuous depreciation of the Ghana cedi.

“At this moment, we are running at a loss. All our capitals are in a ditch,” Nana Yaw Agyeman, the Deputy Secretary of the importers association in Kumasi, told Citi FM.

“The inflation is killing us. It is collapsing all our finances, collapsing all our capital, and we cannot sit down for our capital to drain like that,” he said confirming the group of about eight was mobilizing members to begin the strike next week.

    Traders lock up shops

Two weeks ago, the busiest business enclaves in the region became ghost towns after traders locked up their shops in protest of harsh economic conditions.

A GNA report stated: The traders, most of whom deal in fast-moving consumer goods closed their shops on Monday, October 10, 2022, in protest of what they described as an unfavourable tax regime and the free fall of the Ghana cedis.

The closures left the Pampaso and PZ areas, considered the busiest enclave in the Kumasi central business district empty while many traders who had come from near and far from Kumasi to buy some of these items were left stranded, the report added.

It took the intervention of the Asantehemaa, Nana Yaa Konadu for the traders to agree to reopen their shops.

The week after, the Ghana Union of Traders Association, GUTA, also embarked on a similar protest in solidarity with those in Kumasi. Their one-week planned closure also last two days after the Ga Mantse intervened.

    Akufo-Addo booed at Adum

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s convoy suffered boos and jeers from bystanders in the Ashanti Region as they made their way through an area reported to be Adum.

Despite being a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP, Akufo-Addo’s convoy received uncharacteristic hoots, boos and jeers as it made its way through the Central Business District of Kumasi on October 17.

As seen in videos shared via social media, some traders lined up along the stretch of the road booed away as the president and his convoy passed through the Adum Market to inspect the progress of work on the Kejetia/Central Market Project Phase II.

The booing of the president’s convoy has largely been attributed to the current state of the Ghanaian economy and the general economic hardship in the country.

    Protest against GRA tax regime

Management of the Ghana Revenue Authority, GRA was forced to call for a meeting with business operators in the Central Business Districts (CBDs) of the Ashanti Region after a tax standoff.

The meeting of October 11, 2022, was called after business operators embarked on a sit–down strike over the duplicate payment of Value Added Tax (VAT) on products sold in the Kumasi metropolis.

The business operators also complained about the GRA’s decision to assign tax officers to the offices of the business operators to ensure tax compliance and payment of the VAT among others.

With the above, and with Accra having held a single protest action against the harsh economic environment, it is safe to state that the electoral stronghold of the NPP is becoming the hub of economic protests.

  • Key cabinet decisions to reboot economy to be announced – Oppong Nkrumah

Following a three-day cabinet retreat, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has decided on crucial measures to restart the economy, according to the information minister, ahead of his much anticipated October 30 economic talk.

Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah stated that the choices took into account interactions with different economic actors as well as suggestions from the current negotiations with the International Monetary Fund.

He said that the choices made would ultimately address the nation’s economic problems.

“We’ve wrapped up a three day cabinet retreat during which President Akufo-Addo has settled on key decisions aimed at responding strongly to the impact of the global economic challenges on Ghana

“This follows a week of interactions with various economic actors and inputs from the IMF negotiations so far. Tomorrow evening we start the exercise of rebooting as the Prez outlines measures. #ResolvingTogether,” Oppong-Nkrumah tweeted on Saturday, October 29, 2022.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last Wednesday concluded consultations with economic players ahead of the three-day Cabinet retreat to resolve the pressure on the economy and the rising cost of living, GNA reported.

The consultations, which started on Tuesday at the Jubilee House, Accra, were to enable the government to get the players up to speed with measures being adopted to mitigate current economic challenges and to get their buy-in to those arrangements.

Top issues that were discussed over the two-day period included updates on the government’s economic programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the depreciation of the Cedi, and the collaborative effort needed to get the economy back on track.

Some eight stakeholders, including the Association of Ghana Industries, the Ghana Association of Banks, Transport Operators, Forex Bureau Association of Ghana, Market Women, the Ghana Employers Association, the Private Enterprise Federation, and the Trades Union Congress held “candid” discussions with the President and his economic management team.

  • Akufo-Addo’s address will be a waste of our time – Bulldog

Artiste Manager Nana Asiamah Hanson who is known popularly as Bulldog says the President’s Address to the Nation will be a waste of every Ghanaian’s time.

Bulldog believes it will be imperative if the people of Ghana focus their energies on doing things that will put food on their tables rather than focus on the President.

To Bulldog, the President has proven that he is inept and lacks an understanding of the economy and therefore he should not be taken seriously.

“What Is he coming to say new? It’s a waste of time, I am telling you, you watch. Did you listen to former President Mahama? I’m telling you that tomorrow watch, your man is coming to read from a teleporter, he doesn’t even understand what is happening,” he said.

  • 3 things Akufo-Addo must avoid in address on economy – Kwesi Pratt lists

Kwesi Pratt Jr., managing editor of the Insight Newspaper, stated that he is looking forward to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-presentation Addo’s this evening on issues pertaining to the nation’s economic difficulties.

However, he asserts that the speech must be entirely focused on the steps the government is taking to lessen the suffering of typical Ghanaians in the midst of the country’s economic crisis.

On Saturday, October 29, the seasoned journalist stated anything in the president’s message short of solutions will render it useless, according to Accra-based Pan African TV.

“I don’t know what the president is going to tell us about but whatever he is going to tell us tomorrow must do with solving the problems that confront us. Anything beyond that is useless. What are the solutions? What does he propose to resolve the problems that confront the Ghanaian people. Tomorrow [October 30] that’s all we want to hear,” he said.

To this end, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has outlined four areas the president must steer away from in other not to make Ghanaians angrier.

In his view, the president should desist from drawing a sharp contrast between his administration and former President John Dramani Mahama.

He said such attempts at blame game “will annoy us even more” if the president’s address chooses to go on that tangent.

He said what was most important was that the address focused on how to stabilize the prices of goods and services as well as tackle the country’s debt stock.

“I don’t think anybody in Ghana is interested in the evaluation of the government that he took over from. It is not necessary. It is a waste everybody’s time. We don’t want to hear the Mahama administration did that and did not do that and so on…it’s useless.

“Nobody wants to hear that. What we want to do…you are the president. You are sitting in the chair. What are you going to do in order to take us out of this mess. Finish. So the blame game is not what we are expecting tomorrow. Blame game should be out.

“In fact the blame game will annoy us even more tomorrow. Nobody wants to hear that tomorrow and I hope the president and his handlers know the mood of the country and they know that tomorrow, that’s not what we are expecting.

“All we want to know is how to stabilize prices, how to deal with the debt stock which is killing us, how to make sure ordinary people too can breathe small. That’s all we want to know,” Kwesi Pratt said.

The ace broadcaster has also cautioned the government to stay clear off ceasing the savings and wealth of Ghanaians in foreign currencies.

He contended that such an action if announced by President Akufo-Addo will run contrary to the lawful practice of people being allowed to save in foreign currencies.

“I think there are some other things we don’t want to hear tomorrow and I am not alone. There have been all kinds of rumors flying around. I don’t think anybody wants to hear tomorrow the president announcing measures which amounts to the confiscation of people’s savings and investments.

“We are not responsible for this mess. The laws allows people keep their monies in the bank in dollars. On the basis of the law, people have engaged in lawful enterprise, accumulated their wealth, save their wealth in foreign currencies and so on…government should not come and seize those monies,” Kwesi Pratt stated.

He continued that President Akufo-Addo should not also announce measures to devalue the local currency nor should he redenominate it.

Kwesi Pratt said the two measures adopted by governments in previous times did not augur well for the country.

According to Investopedia.com, while devaluing a currency may be an attractive option, it can have negative consequences.

“We don’t want to hear about a devaluation of the national currencies anymore because these devaluations have not helped us over the years,” Kwesi Pratt emphasized.

“We do not want to hear demonetization and redenomination and so on…we have tried it and it didn’t work. We want to hear something fresh and new,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo’s October 30 address comes after a three-day crunch Cabinet meeting in the Eastern Region at the Peduase Lodge over the depreciation of the cedi, as well as the IMF programme and the skyrocketing prices of food and other items.

Information Minister and MP for Offoase Ayirebi, Kojo Opong-Nkrumah, ahead of the address has said that Akufo-Addo has taken key decisions aimed at rebooting the economy.

A group of 80 MPs held a press conference demanding Ofori-Atta’s removal as Minister citing the economic downturn the country is grappling with.

“I’m a Ga and we always label or give identity and names to things or persons. However, that doesn’t mean that’s the official name of that person or thing. It’s just an identity. Asibolanga is not a name, I’m just using it to sing.

  • I was left broken into pieces – Laryea Kingston opens up on being axed from Black Stars squad for 2010 World Cup

Former Ghana international, Laryea Kingston has revealed he was left broken into pieces after he was dropped from Black Stars squad for the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa.

The former Hearts of Oak midfielder was one of the biggest names in the national team and was instrumental in the country securing a second consecutive World Cup spot.

Four years earlier, Kingston had missed Ghana’s maiden appearance at the World Cup in Germany due to suspension for an altercation with Senegal’s defender Habib Beye in a group encounter at the Nations Cup.

He may have accepted the reasons for being omitted from Ghana’s squad at the 2006 tournament due to a suspension he carried over from the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt months earlier.

However, Kingston, who believed he was in the best of shape to make his debut at the biggest stage of his career, is yet to come to terms with Coach Rajevac’s decision to leave him out of the Black Stars team to the 2010 World Cup and he says the Serbian owes him an explanation for omitting him.

“I was very disappointed in the decision to take me out of the team for the 2010 World Cup, but I had no one to provide me with some answers,” Kingston told the Daily Graphic in an interview.

“It broke me into pieces because I had done everything possible and I was in good shape to play for the Black Stars, so I was surprised at the coach’s decision to omit me from the squad.

“What can you do when a coach says you are not in his plans? It was one of the saddest moments of my career, but I had to deal with it.

“We held a meeting to discuss the final list for the tournament and all Coach Milovan Rajevac told me was that I was not in his plans.

“I felt he owed me an explanation because with our squad at the time, I didn’t see the reason why I should not make it to the World Cup,” he added.

  • Video alleging that Diamond Appiah was once Mzbel’s backup dancer resurfaces

A video that captures an artiste promoter alleging that Diamond Appiah was once a backup dancer for Mzbel back in the days when she was actively doing music has resurfaced on the internet.

Speaking on the Sammy Flex show in March 2022, the unidentified gentleman buttressed his claims with an instance when he came face-to-face with diamond Appiah rigorously dancing on stage at an event in Equatorial Guinea.

The said video has re-emerged at the exact time Mzbel and Diamond Appiah seem to have started a fresh banter.

Currently on social media, Diamond has taken a dig at Mzbel by seconding to Abeiku Santana’s claims that the singer is a former artiste.

Diamond was vibing to Mzbel’s ‘Asibolanga’s tune while teasing the ‘16 years’ hitmaker with the ‘former artiste’ tag.

Unperturbed, Mzbel rather saw this as a profitable move adding that Diamond’s video has further boosted her track.

But in the midst of the back-and-forth, with both parties seeking to hit each other the hardest, the video in which it was alleged that Diamond was once the backup dancer of Mzbel has popped up.

In the said video, the unidentified artiste promoter said he, together with artistes like KK Fosu, Kofi Nti, and others went for that particular show where Diamond was seen performing for Mzbel on stage.

He added that Diamond Appiah even fell from stage in the process.

“I remember in Equitorial Guinea, Kofi Nti, KK Fosu and myself went for a show. Diamond Appiah was part because she was Mzbel’s dancer at that time. She was once Mzbel’s dancer. She even fell from stage during that event,” he stated.

  • Assin North MP technically remains an MP – Bagbin cites Judicial communication gap

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has reiterated that an embattled Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson of Assin North remains a lawmaker despite a court order barring him from holding himself out as such.

Bagbin while commenting on the status of the MP on Friday, October 28, cited the lack of communication on the part of the Judiciary for his view on the matter.

He said everything he knows of the Gyakye Quayson matter is from what he reads in the media and what he hears from third parties despite the fact that as leader of the legislature, he must be formally communicated to on the court’s decision to bar an MP from serving their term.

“As of now, I still don’t have any evidence of that and so we should let sleeping dogs lie until the proper thing is done. The issues that were raised by the Hon. Ablakwa is on page 8 under item 3, you have the name number 45 which deals with the Hon. Member for Assin North.

“Because his matter has been pending and I don’t have any evidence on it. I have been reading in papers, I have been hearing from people but we don’t have any communication from our colleague from the arm of government in charge of the judiciary on the matter,” he told MPs.

He added that he cannot take what he reads in the papers as sufficient evidence to act on, “so, I have raised this issue before expecting that there would be a communication to us on that issue and nothing has come so far and that is the difficulty I have.”

Apex Court bars Assin North MP from Parliament

A seven-member Supreme Court panel, months back ruled that the MP cannot hold himself out as a legislator pending the determination of the case challenging his eligibility.

The court by a 5-2 majority decision, said Quayson, who has been sued by one Michael Ninfa, for not renouncing his Canadian citizenship at the time he picked nomination forms to contest December 7, 2020, Parliamentary Election, cannot go to Parliament to conduct business.

The presiding judge, Justice Jones Dotse joined four members of the bench- Justices Mariama Owusu, Prof Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu, Gertrude Torkonoo and Emmanuel Yoni Kulendi, to uphold the interlocutory injunction application filed against the MP. The two judges who dissented were Justices Agness Dordzie and NeneAmegatcher.

On the substantive suit, the Apex Court directed an expeditious hearing and urged the parties and their counsel to cooperate with the court in that regard.

  • Members of Drunkards Association threaten to stop drinking over price hike

The members of the Ghana Drunkards Association are threatening to boycott drinking over recent hike in price of alcoholic beverages in the country.

According to the Association, the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi as against the American dollar has greatly affected their patronage of the business.

President of the Ghana Drunkards Association Moses Onyah (Dry Bone) speaking to Kasapa News revealed that, in the past, Ghc5 worth of “akpeteshie” could get them fully drunk, but with the recent increase in prices, they have to spend at least GHc15 before they are fully drunk.

  • We are jokers to think Ofori-Atta’s sack will curb Cedi depreciation – Nhyiaeso MP

The removal of Ken Ofori-Atta as finance minister, according to Stephen Amoah, a member of parliament for Nhyiaeso, may not stop the local currency’s free fall against important trading currencies like the US dollar.

In an interview with Accra-based Metro TV, he claimed that anyone who believe that the Cedi will appreciate as a result of the ouster of Ofori-Atta are “jokers.”

The legislator claimed that because the nation’s economy was heavily dependent on imports, it had not been robust for more than 40 years.

Stephen Amoah was responding to a question premised on calls for Ofori-Atta’s sack and Speaker Alban Bagbin’s comment that the Cedi was appreciating against the dollar as a result of motion filed by the Minority side of Parliament for a vote of censure against Ofori-Atta.

“So right now, if we sack the finance minister, dollar will come to GH₵5? We are jokers as a country. When you come to finance and economics, there is nothing like may be. It’s lazy man’s approach.

“We need to accept the fact that our economy hasn’t been strong for over 40 years. We run something we call negative effective tax rate country. Monies from government to the households and monies that government gets from households…the monies going to households are always higher than what we get as revenue,” the MP said.

President Akufo-Addo has in recent times come under pressure to reshuffle or sack some of his ministers particularly Ken Ofori-Atta over worsening economic conditions under his watch.

However, the president has rejected reshuffle calls insisting that his ministers are performing well.

On October 25, some NPP MPs organized a press confidence to demand the dismissal of Ofori-Atta and the Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu-Boahen.

The group said failure by President Akufo-Addo to heed to their call will mean they will not pursue government business in Parliament.

Following this, the president held meetings with the MPs where it is reported that he has appealed to them to allow Ken Ofori-Atta in particular complete the IMF negotiations and also present the 2023 Budget and see to its appropriation.

The Majority Caucus in a statement confirmed that the demands of the MPs will be ‘acted upon’ after the conclusion of IMF negotiations and the presentation of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy in November 2022, and the subsequent passage of the Appropriation Bill.

  • You’re a bad leader if you fail to protect Ghana’s resources – Okyenhene

The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, has stated that it is irresponsible for politicians to neglect to safeguard Ghana’s lands and other resources.

He contends that a competent leader must safeguard the assets entrusted to him or her by the government.

The Okyenhene lamented the inability of political leaders to prevent the threat of illegal small-scale minoring galamsey from destroying lands and water bodies while addressing at an Anglican Church event in Kibi in the Eastern Region.

“The other day Nana Addo (Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo) came to the National House (of Chief) and he asked what people were doing with excavators at the Atiwa Forest. What are you going to do with an excavator in the Atiwa Forest?

“There is no construction of road or building over there, what are you going to use the excavator for? The truth is that the people who do these things don’t have the money to buy excavators. They have no money.

“So, you the leaders who are doing this should stop. You have to stop this because if you love Ghana, you will not destroy its properties (resources). A leader, whose properties of the state have been entrusted to, who fails to add more but rather destroys the ones his predecessor left with him is a bad leader,” he said in Twi.

  • Replace Ofori-Atta with Dr. Stephen Amoah – Murtala Mohammed advises Akufo-Addo

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central MP, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-AddoPresident Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to replace Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta with his colleague MP for Nhyiaeso, Dr. Stephen Amoah.

Speaking in an Onua TV monitored by GhanaWeb, Murtala intimated that Dr. Amoah, popularly known as Sticka, will do a far better job than the current finance minister.

He added that the minority caucus of Parliament is bent removing Ofori-Atta because they are afraid Ofori-Atta’s bad management might lead the economy to a total collapse.

“The reason why the minority, we are also interested in this is that the mess is just too much. So, if we don’t salvage this and by Allah’s wish we win the election in 2024, we will have serious problems at hand in 2025 going. So, we need to salvage this country.

“… they should look for my good friend, Dr. Sticka, Dr. Amoah. I saw him yesterday and I said, the incoming minister for finance. Dr. Sticka will be a perfect minister for finance because at least he will be slightly better than this mess,” he said.

The minority caucus of Parliament filed a motion to have Ken Ofori-Atta and the Minister of State in charge of Finance, Charles Adu-Boahen, sacked.

The MPs explained that their position follows several concerns over the poor mismanagement of the economy, which has forced the government to seek IMF assistance.

The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, noted, “as representatives of the people and as duty bearers, we must move a motion to call for the end of the finance minister.

“Our brothers in the majority believe in this. What they should do is to support the call of the Minority Leader and the motion for the Minority Leader for the dismissal of the finance minister.”

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has admitted the motion and has set November 10, 2022, for a secret vote on the motion.

  • Reverend Anthony Boakye’s wife leaves Resurrection Power, sets up her own church

Reverend Mrs. Anthony Boakye, the enraged wife of the founder and head of Resurrection Power New Generation Ministries, has finally left her husband’s church to form her own.

Following her husband’s protracted sickness, the pastor’s wife and several church officials engaged in a power struggle for several months prior to this.

Following news of her husband’s illness, Reverend Boakye got into a fight with the church’s hierarchy over who should run the business of the Kasoa branch of the church.

The power struggle attained its height somewhere in August this year when a livid Mrs Boakye was captured on CCTV attempting to attack some elders of the church over donations made by the church members.

Another video emerged showing Mrs Boakye attempting to break into an office belonging to the church to secure funds belonging to the church.

In a latest update on the development, Ekuonaba TV has reported that Mrs Boakye has finally left Resurrection New Generation Power to set up her own church.

Her church according to the report is based in the Ashanti Regional Capital of Kumasi. A video shared by Ekuonaba TV shows Revered Mrs Boakye preaching to her new congregation.

Meanwhile, an attempt by Bishop Anthony Kojo Boakye to transfer a brother of Mrs Boakye who is the Head of Resurrection Power New Generation Ministries in the Ashanti Region has been resisted by members of the church in the region.

In a letter dated October 10, 2022, Bishop Anthony Boakye informed Pastor Stephen Oware that he was no longer the head of the church in the region and that he had been transferred to the branch at Zokor in the Upper East Region.

However, another video shared by Ekuonaba TV and sighted by GhanaWeb shows some members of the church in the Ashanti Region chasing after and hooting at officials of the church who had gone to deliver the transfer message to Reverend Oware.

“I send you greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, this letter comes to serve you as a notice that you have been transferred as the Regional Head of the Church in the Ashanti Region to head the branch of the church in Zogor in the Upper East Region.

“In light of your transfer, you are by this notice you are directed not to take any major decision including receiving any church funds from the various stations within the Ashanti Region.

“You are to report at your new station within a month from the date of this notice.

“Thank you for the service rendered in coordinating the affairs of the church in the Ashanti Region for these past years.

“I wish you well in your endeavours at your new station,” a copy of the transfer letter read.

  • Attempt by presidential staffer to mock Mahama backfires as social media users remind him of Akufo-Addo’s plagiarism

A staff member at the president’s office attempted to use Facebook to accuse former president John Dramani Mahama of plagiarizing.

When John Mahama gave a speech on the current economic difficulties facing Ghana under the Akufo-Addo administration on Thursday, October 27, 2022, Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe accused him of plagiarizing. He made the accusation on his Facebook page.

Charles Tagoe claimed on his Facebook page that former president Mahama had copied a line from American playwright and screenwriter Aaron Benjamin Sorkin.

His attempt however was met with a barrage of comments reminding him of President Akufo-Addo’s history when it comes to the issue of plagiarism.

“You should be the last person to talk about plagiarism. Nana Addo shameless [SIC] plagiarized a full speech on his first day in office,” Lingani Goodman commented under the presidential staffer’s post.

Other commenters sought to accuse the presidential staffer of engaging in a fallacy of diversion.

“You have been offered free and pragmatic solutions to help you guys bring us from this mess you have caused, unfortunately, that is not where your interest is, but rather the usual jokes. I’m not surprised though,” Tony Goodman also wrote under the post.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has on various occasions been accused of appropriating speeches.

The first of such accusations was levelled against President Akufo-Addo when he delivered his inaugural address on January 7, 2017.

Former President Mahama on Thursday delivered his address at the UPSA Auditorium on the topic “Building The Ghana We Want.”

Mr Mahama in his address spoke about the current economic hardship in the country and made various proposals that he believes the government need to adopt to turn the situation around.

  • You can’t denigrate my age mate – Sefa Kayi stops Allotey Jacobs from attempt to insult NPP MP

Social commentator Allotey Jacobs had to be stopped in his tracks by Kwame Sefa Kayi, the host of Kokroo on Peace FM, when he tried to disparage several majority Members of Parliament who requested the resignation of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

During a panel discussion on the program, Allotey Jacobs attempted to discredit the over 80 MPs by expressing concerns about their youth and political experience.

To stop Allotey Jacobs from straying off topic, Kwame Sefa Kayi tackled him. He would have none of that, though.

Sefa Kayi reprimanded Allotey Jacobs and asked him not to gauge people’s competence and intelligence by their age.

He made reference to the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak who is 42 years old to back his position that young ones can also run the country.

“I totally disagree with the Subin MP over his statement. They are kids who just came into politics,” Allotey Jacobs said.

Sefa Kayi: The Subin MP is the same age as me. We are 52 years old not kids. You cannot denigrate us. At 52, he is not a kid. We’ve been belittling young people but a 42-year-old is now the Prime Minister of the UK. It’s this same mentality that made someone call the Special Prosecutor a small boy. 42-year-old is now British Prime Minister so when you go for a loan, he will be the one to sign”.

Allotey insisted but Sefa Kayi will have none of that, forcing him to switch his argument to the substantive issue of the MPs who were dissatisfied with the continued stay of Ofori-Atta in office.

The former Central Regional chairman of the opposition NDC stated that the stance taken by the MPs is a deviation from the Biblical teaching where followers are required to walk in the tracks of their leader and not act against him.

Over 80 members of the majority caucus earlier in the week advanced a campaign for the dismissal of Ken Ofori-Atta at a press conference addressed by MP for Asante Akyem North, Andy Appiah-Kubi.

According to him, the call has been communicated to the Presidency through the leadership but to no avail.

“Notice is hereby served that until such persons as aforementioned are made to resign or removed from office, we members of the Majority caucus here in parliament will not participate in any business of government by or for the President [or] by any other minister,” he explained.

  • How can we sit down for this to happen to us – Martin Kpebu rallies support for ‘Kume Preko’ reloaded demo

Martin Kpebu, a private attorney, is pleading with Ghanaians to support his campaign to force the resignation of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and a few important members of his administration.

Martin Kpebu expressed his concerns about the apathy of Ghanaians in allowing the current economic misery to fester while allowing the president and his cabinet to remain in power on the Saturday, October 29, 2022, edition of The Key Points on TV3.

He criticized the current economic suffering brought on by the huge increases in the cost of life and essentials such as fuel, saying, “How can we allow this to happen to us?

According to Martin Kpebu, the president and other officials such as Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta as well as Deputy Finance Minister, Charles Adu Boahen must be made to leave office.

He emphasised that the president and his appointees while the entire country is feeling the heat of the economic hardship are rather enjoying from monies, they have made by being in government.

He therefore urged Ghanaians to join his upcoming Kume Preko Reloaded demonstration slated for Saturday, October 5, 2022.

In a recent interview on Neat FM, Martin Kbepu justified his call for the president’s resignation saying ““What Ghanaians can do to get the president removed is to organize demonstrations. The police have given me permission for the ‘Kumi preko reloaded’ demo next Saturday, November 5. It starts from the Obra Spot at 7:00 am; every Ghanaian should make it a point to be there.

“If the president does not resign by then, we demonstrate and present him a petition that we have had enough of him, and he should step down,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is scheduled to address the nation on Sunday, October 30, 2022.

The address by the president will be his first major speech on the current state of the Ghanaian economy which has over the past weeks seen a significant rise in inflation among others.

The victim is currently in stable condition.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that this term, five pupils have been bitten by snakes, an issue which has become a great source of worry to the school management.

The school which was established in 1961 has never had a toilet facility which makes both the teachers and the students always ease themselves in the bush always.

“We always meet our teachers trooping out from either the school farm or bush where we all ease ourselves,” a pupil said.

They are, therefore, appealing to the government, the Chief of the town, the District Chief Executive for Ekumfi District, and the Member of Parliament to support the school with a toilet facility in order to prevent further snake bites.

  • Should Otumfuo intervene in the IMF bailout negotiations as he did for Mahama?

The 2023 National Budget, which will be put up to Parliament for approval in November 2022, would reportedly incorporate the agreements negotiated with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the bailout it is requesting.

After early talks, the IMF stated that Ghana’s government only needed to demonstrate that its debt level is manageable in order to receive the rescue it is seeking.

Bright Simons, vice president of IMANI Africa, and other analysts have hinted that it will be extremely difficult for the government to reach an agreement with the IMF before the budget is presented in the following three weeks.

Renowned economist and statesman, Kwame Pianim, has said that the information he has indicates that the bailout negotiations are not going well.

This is the time the country needs someone like the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, whose intervention, according to former President John Dramani Mahama, was critical to Ghana getting an IMF programme in 2015.

Mahama, in February 2022, said that he called on Otumfuo Osei Tutu to enquire from him whether he could get his friend, the then President of the World Bank, James D. Wolfensohn, to work on the IMF programme for the government, and the Asantehene readily accepted the request.

“Because of that programme, he (Otumfuo) flew to Washington to have talks with Mr. Wolfensohn, who, together with Otumfuo, went and spoke with the IMF Director, Madam Christine Lagarde, and within a short period of time, we had the Extended Credit Facility,” the ex-president said.

To date, the Otumfuo has not commented on the current IMF negotiations the government is having, probably because it has refused to call for a national dialogue on the current economic crisis like the one Mahama’s administration had in 2014.

If the Akufo-Addo government needs the IMF bailout as it has indicated to help turn the economy around them it has to start bringing people like Otumfuo on board,” the former president said.

  • ‘Black Panther’ sequel stars on late Chadwick Boseman: ‘We made him proud’

The stars of the highly-anticipated sequel to Marvel’s “Black Panther” walked the red carpet in Hollywood on Wednesday night at the “Wakanda Forever” world premiere but there was one name hugely missed, their late co-star Chadwick Boseman.

The actor, who played the lead, King T’Challa, in the 2018 original, died in 2020 after a four-year battle with colon cancer he had kept private. He was 43.

“It was definitely tough to go back to a space that you hold so dearly in your heart and are so attached to T’Challa, so attached to Chad,” actress Letitia Wright, who plays T’Challa’s younger sister Princess Shuri, said.

“But we had to just be strong, to follow through on the story and it got emotional at times. It still is, but one that we came together, we worked on. We made him proud.”

“Black Panther”, in which Boseman played the king of the fictional African land of Wakanda, became a global hit and was hailed as a milestone for racial diversity in Hollywood.

Its sequel had been in the works when Boseman died.

“I dreaded it because I couldn’t imagine moving forward without Chadwick,” said Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, who reprises her role as T’Challa’s former lover Nakia.

“But then when Ryan Coogler, our director and writer, walked me through his idea to carry on with the story, I breathed a breath of relief because what he did was he incorporated the loss into the story,” Nyong’o said. “And so as a person and as an actor, I didn’t have to pretend like I hadn’t experienced such a loss, such grief. And it very much makes use of that.”

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” sees the protagonists working once again with the Dora Milaje, an elite group of female warriors, as they fight to protect their nation following the king’s death.

  • Adom-Otchere renews attacks on Murtala Mohammed, blasts him for ‘disrespecting’ spare parts dealers

The majority leader of the House of Representatives, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, was disparaged by the member of parliament representing Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad, according to broadcaster Paul Adom-Otchere.

The MP criticized Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu for claiming that Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, did not comprehend Ghanaian legislation.

On Wednesday (October 26), during an interview with TV3 in Parliament that GhanaWeb was able to observe, Murtala claimed that the Speaker has been the target of unwarranted attacks from the majority leader who constantly wants to challenge him.

He added that Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu could not in any way compare himself to Speaker Alban Bagbin when it comes to constitutional and legal matters.

“The Majority Leader has a penchant for attacking the person of the Speaker. And he does that all the time. Any opportunity he gets, he picks on the Speaker. He did that on the floor. The Speaker didn’t want to sink into the gutters, and the Speaker was very diplomatic.

“You listened to him in the press conference and he even said that the Speaker doesn’t even understand the law. When the Speaker was a lawyer practising, you, Honourable Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, you were selling spare parts at Magazine, at the time the Speaker was a practising lawyer,” he said.

Reacting to this during his Good Morning Ghana show on Thursday (October 27), Paul Adom-Otchere said that Murtala, by the statement he made, lacks wisdom.

“I talked about wisdom… that wisdom, it is not everybody that is able to demonstrate it like that. You’re a politician, a Member of Parliament, and you’re talking down spare parts dealers.

“Murtala, Allah will forgive you eh. Don’t do that again. You are part of a mass party, the National Democratic Congress, and you are rubbishing spare parts dealers that their nobodies.

“Don’t you know that people finish university these days with a first class in electrical engineering and then go and do spare parts dealing? What is wrong with some of our politicians?

“Murtala was talking down spare parts dealers that Majority Leader Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu he was a spare parts dealer when Bagbin was practising law. Murtala is saying that. The other day, he was not happy that somebody was calling him a teacher,” he said.

  • Don’t respond to Mahama in your national address – Jantuah to Akufo-Akufo

President Akufo-Addo has been warned not to respond to the most recent concerns brought up by former President John Mahama in his Sunday national speech, according to Kwame Jantuah, the Chairman of the Political Affairs Committee of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP).

At the “Building The Ghana We Want” lecture on Thursday night at the University of Professional Studies in Accra, Mr. Mahama harshly criticized the Akufo-Addo government’s poor economic management, which has left many Ghanaians struggling to make ends meet.

The former first gentleman, however, proffered some solutions to the current economic challenges facing the nation including cutting the budget to the Office of The President and stopping public funding of the construction of the National Cathedral.

Speaking on the Weekly Review segment on the Morning Starr on Starr FM Friday, Lawyer Jantuah said the President must rather heed the positive advice from his predecessor and not use his upcoming address as a counter platform.

“I expect on Sunday that the President will not come and repeat some of the things he’s been repeating. He should come and give fresh alternatives, fresh things that Ghanaians can say we are gradually beginning to have confidence in our President. By the next two years when he leaves we can all say that we went wow, we went through a crisis but President Akufo-Addo was able to take us out of it. That is what we are looking for, he shouldn’t even go to Mahama’s speech, he shouldn’t go there. That is ex-President Mahama’s speech, he knows why he said what he said. People will look at it and say yes he said this and that.

“He is the President, so the speech that he gives to us should give us confidence, and comfort and move the country forward. I would have loved it after President Akufo Addo’s speech on Sunday, that week he’ll call a meeting of himself, ex-President Mahama, ex-President Kufuor if he can make it, reps of Chiefs, reps of civil society, MPs, Judges, let’s all sit around the table and let’s see how we can bring what the former President has said, and what I have said together as a template to move this country forward. That will be fantastic.”

  • FDA issues warning on severe side effects of unregistered Ascot Diet weight loss products

Due to its numerous adverse effects, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has urged Ghanaians to stop using and buying several unregistered weight loss products.

The FDA claims that Ascot Diet weight reduction products made by Ascot Diet Clinic are not only not registered with the appropriate authorities but also cause significant allergic responses in users.

“The FDA wishes to inform the public that Ascot Diet weight loss products, produced by the Ascot Diet Clinic have not been registered by the Authority and its use could cause severe allergic reactions like itching, hives, shortness of breath, wheezing, swelling of the tongue, throat or mouth stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhoea, dizziness, or faintness due to the sudden boost in minerals and nutrients,” the FDA said in a statement.

The authority therefore called on Ghanaians to shun patronising unregistered products while further warning importers to ensure that they engage in their business in compliance with the law.

“The FDA wishes to advise the public to desist from patronising medicinal products that are not registered by the Authority since their safety, quality and efficacy cannot be guaranteed.

“Importers of such weight loss products are to note that Sections 99 and 118 of the Public Health Act, 2012, Act 851 prohibit the importation and sale of unregistered products. Offenders would therefore be severely sanctioned when found,” the FDA added.
