Huge monument to Alexander the Great reopened in Greece

One of the most important ancient monuments, the palace where Alexander the Great became king, has reopened after being restored for 16 years.

The Palace of Aigai, close to the city of Thessaloniki in Greece, was made over 2,300 years ago.

The Romans broke it and people found it again in the 19th Century by digging. The renovation cost over €20m and the EU helped pay for it.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the leader of Greece, said the site is very important to the whole world at a ceremony on Friday.

He said that these monuments are important for the world’s heritage.

“We need to show it off, advertise it, and explore the new opportunities it brings. ”

Some of the palace’s large columns have been fixed. The site will be open to everyone on Sunday.

Philip II, who was the father of Alexander the Great, built the palace. He was the ruler of Macedonia, which was a very strong kingdom.

Aigai was the capital near Vergina.

The palace was the biggest building in ancient Greece. It was 15,000 square meters and had big banquet halls, places to pray, and open areas.

Alexander became the king of Macedonians in 336BC after his father was killed. He then made a big empire that stretched into Asia and the Middle East.

The palace and the tombs of Philip and other kings from Macedonia are a special place recognized by Unesco as important for the world.

  • KT Hammond accuses cement producers and importers of deliberate hike in price of commodity

KT Hammond accuses cement producers and importers of deliberate hike in price of commodity

The Minister of Trade and Industry, KT Hammond, has voiced his dismay at the recent uptick in cement prices orchestrated by cement producers and importers.

He said it was unfair and unacceptable, describing it as a “conspiracy of a cabal of cement producers and importers,” an act he condemned.

“During the festivities, I learned in the constituency that the cabal of the cement producers and importers have again conspired and decided to increase the prices of cement, by a considerable figure. I don’t think that that is right. I do not accept that that is right,” he said, as quoted by citinewsroom.com.

According to KT Hammond, the government has created an enabling atmosphere for businesses to thrive, therefore, cement producers must be fair to Ghanaians.

“The government has provided the necessary ambience and regulatory framework, the proper environment for these companies to operate and do their businesses profitably. I expect that they make their reasonable profits, but what I don’t accept is for them to take the people of Ghana for granted. I can’t understand the basis for the increase,” he added.

  • Indian Sun mission to arrive at its destination in few hours

Indian Sun mission to arrive at its destination in few hours

India’s first sun-observing mission is about to arrive at its last stop in a few hours.

Isro will try to put Aditya-L1 in a place in space on Saturday. From there, it can always see the Sun.

The spaceship has been flying towards the Sun for four months since it launched on 2 September.

It was launched a few days after India made history by being the first to land close to the Moon’s south pole.

India is sending its first mission to study the biggest thing in our solar system, the sun. It is named after Surya, the Hindu god of the sun, also known as Aditya. L1 stands for a specific point in space between the Sun and Earth where the spacecraft is going.

The European Space Agency says a Lagrange point is a place where the gravity from two big things, like the Sun and the Earth, cancels out. This makes it possible for a spaceship to stay in one place without moving.

L1 is 1% of the distance from Earth to the Sun, and it’s 1. 5 million km away from Earth. That’s about 932,000 miles. Isro said the spacecraft is close to reaching its destination.

An official from Isro told the BBC that they will make a last adjustment to Aditya’s orbit on Saturday at around 4:00pm in India (10:30 GMT) to put it in L1’s orbit.

The head of Isro, S Somanath, said they will steer the craft into orbit and have to make adjustments from time to time to keep it in position.

Once Aditya-L1 reaches this “parking spot” it will orbit the Sun at the same speed as the Earth. From here, it can keep an eye on the Sun all the time, even during eclipses and occultations, and do science research.

The orbiter has seven tools to look at and learn about the sun’s outer layer, its surface, and the thin layer between them.

After the spaceship launched on 2 September, it circled the Earth four times before finally leaving Earth’s gravity on 30 September. In early October, Isro made a small change to the path of their spacecraft to make sure it was heading in the right direction towards its final destination.

The agency says that some of the tools on the ship have already begun working, collecting information and taking pictures.

Just a few days after the spacecraft launched, Isro shared the first pictures it received from the mission. One picture showed the Earth and the Moon together, and the second was a photo of two scientific instruments.

Last month, the agency shared the first pictures of the whole Sun in different colors. They said the images give us new information about the details of the Sun’s surface and outer layer.

Researchers believe that the mission will allow them to learn about solar activity and how it affects Earth’s weather, as well as weather in space.

The Sun’s radiation, heat, particles, and magnetic fields always affect the weather on Earth. They also affect the weather in space, where almost 7,800 satellites, including over 50 from India, are located.

Experts say that Aditya can help us understand and predict solar winds and eruptions a few days before they happen. This will help India and other countries move their satellites to safety.

Isro has not told us how much the mission cost, but some reports in India say it’s about 3. 78 billion rupees, which is equal to about $46 million or £36 million.

If Saturday’s plan works, India will be part of a small group of countries that are studying the Sun.

Nasa, Japan, and ESA have been looking at the Sun for a long time. Nasa started in the 1960s, Japan in 1981, and ESA in the 1990s.

In February 2020, Nasa and ESA worked together to send a Solar Orbiter into space. This spacecraft is getting up close to the Sun and collecting information. Scientists believe this will help them learn more about what makes the Sun act the way it does.

In 2021, Nasa’s new spacecraft Parker Solar Probe was the first to fly through the corona, the Sun’s outer atmosphere, which is a big deal.

NPP Primaries vetting: People who attacked party’s offices to face the law

Director of Elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako, has asserted that those responsible for any attack on the party’s offices will face the full force of the law.

During an inteirview, Mr Nimako noted that despite a smooth process, the vetting was marred by a little chaos.

He described the ongoing vetting of parliamentary aspirants in constituencies nationwide with incumbent parliamentarians by the party as largely successful.

The vetting, which is expected to end on Friday, January 5, began on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

The vetting is ahead of the party’s parliamentary primaries set for January 7, 2024.

When asked to describe the vetting process so far during the interview, he said, “It has been very smooth; not too many issues have come up.”

He added, “We are looking at constituencies numbering 134, you know, we have 137 constituencies where we have sitting members of Parliament but three of them are not participating.”

Touching on reports of attacks on properties at the party’s Bimbilla office following the disqualification of Alhaji Razak, Nimako said the culprits will be made to face the law in accordance with the party’s rules.

“Those who have attacked the party’s office will have to face the law, prospective candidates must know how to seek redress for their concerns,” he said.

“The gentleman in question will have to go through other engagements with the party to ascertain the full development, and as we speak the responsibility lies with the vetting committee to furnish the party with the details,” Nimako added.

Generally, 23 applicants in the ongoing process went unopposed.

  • Mahama to commemorate ‘Kwabena’ yam festival with people of Abease

Mahama to commemorate ‘Kwabena’ yam festival with people of Abease

Abease residents in the Bono East Region are gearing up for an elaborate celebration, eagerly anticipating the attendance of John Dramani Mahama at this year’s ‘Kwabena’ (Yam Festival) scheduled for this weekend.

The Abease Traditional Council is orchestrating a significant event, with the former President slated to be the Guest Speaker, making it an auspicious occasion.

The invitation extended by the Paramount Chief and President of the Abease Traditional Council, Obrempong Kru Takyi (ii), has sparked immense joy among the locals.

They expressed their anticipation for the visit, emphasizing their gratitude for Mahama’s commitment to their community.

Among the pressing issues raised by the community ahead of Mahama’s arrival is the state of the Kintampo – Komfuorkrom- Abease – Prang road. According to the residents, the road has become a haven for armed robbers, attributing the situation to what they perceive as a lack of commitment by the current government.

Youth leaders revealed that the contractor only returned to the site in the last quarter of the previous year.

During discussions with elders and the youth, prayers were offered for John Dramani Mahama’s success in the upcoming December 2024 elections, with the hope that he would continue to address the developmental needs of the area.

The people expressed their desire for Mahama to “Build the Ghana We Want Together.”

This was contained in a statement signed by Suleman Mohammed-Mustapha, the Bono East Regional Communications Officer of the NDC

According to the statement, gratitude was also extended for Mahama’s previous contributions to the community, including the construction of the Abease Community Day Senior High School.

Other notable projects mentioned were the CHPS Compound at Komfuorkrom, a Six Classroom Block for D/A Primary School, a Six Classroom Block for R/C JHS, and a Maternity Ward at the Abease Health Centre.

The extension of electricity to the entire Abease Traditional Area was highlighted as another significant achievement.

The ‘Kwabena’ (Yam Festival), themed “Employing Unity As A Catalyst To Building A Better Abease,” is expected to draw participants from all walks of life.

Notable attendees include National Executives of the NDC, Regional Chairman of the NDC in the Bono East, Hon. Unas Owusu, Parliamentary Candidates, Members of Parliament, Former Government Appointees, Branch Executives, and other Party Sympathizers.

The festival aims to celebrate unity and foster a collective effort towards the betterment of the community.

  • Bonoman Institute calls on chiefs to resolve disputes in Bono Region

Bonoman Institute calls on chiefs to resolve disputes in Bono Region

The Bonoman Institute has highlighted concerns and identified issues that hinder the sustained and improved development of the Bono Regions. The institute is advocating for collaborative efforts to address these challenges.

Stressing the pivotal role of chiefs in the development process, the Institute emphasized that numerous unresolved disputes within the institution have impeded the progress of the regions.

In a press statement, the Institute delineated several critical concerns that they believe demand the participation of all stakeholders to address, in the best interest of the Bono and Bono East Regions.

The release described the promotion of peace and unity amongst Bono Chiefs as an irreplaceable mission that the chiefs, elders and political elites should, as a matter of urgency, work towards achievement.

“We cannot develop as a region when we have so many unresolved disputes”, it said and added that the many unsolved intra-chieftaincy disputes are one of the agents that push development far behind since the environment lacks the right energy to have the needed cohesion for development.

The release also mentioned conflicts with other chiefs outside the region as an emerging issue that needs to be addressed by the chiefs with other relevant institutions for the sake of peace and tranquillity in contemporary Ghana.

“Escalating issues related to chieftaincy issues, particularly through some chiefs, is what we plead on the national security and the government in general, for the sake of posterity and development in the Bono Regions, to objectively address. It has the potential to draw these regions back in development”.

The Institute implored the Bono chiefs to lead the efforts to industrialize the regions “to enhance employment promotion as well as harness the region’s agricultural capacity through an enhanced value chain to improve the economic values of the people, particularly farmers and the youths”.

They believe the regions will be positioned for trade and other economic activities if the chiefs liaise with politicians and their natives who have risen in business for urgent actions that promote development.

While admonishing the people of the Bono Regions to come out of their shells to defy all odds and make a difference, the Institute also called on authorities to deal with growing cases of armed robbery on the highways and cattle herdsmen attacks on farmers as well as the use of their cattle to destroy others farms.

The Institute also said, “The development of the Bono Twi dialect is yet another important element required to bring about the needed development and identity of the people of the Bono Regions”, hence their determination to implement it to enhance development.

The release, signed by the Executive Directors, Attah Akoto Snr and Ansu Gyabaah, in charge of Operations and Affairs, respectively, said the “Protection of the natural resources from unscrupulous people who selfishly steal or find ways to own them should be a matter of grave concern to us”.

The Institute assured of its commitment to work with all stakeholders and harness the potential of the human resources to consciously bring development to the people of the Bono Regions to affect Ghana as a whole.

Bonoman Institute is an organization with the mission to be a resource hub that works to ensure the absolute development of the Bono people through documentation, preservation and promotion of their culture, history and heritage, as well as highlight and enhance their potential to contribute to local, regional, national and global economic development.

  • Sunak was sceptical of Rwanda plan – Documents indicate

Sunak was sceptical of Rwanda plan – Documents indicate

Rishi Sunak wasn’t sure about sending migrants to Rwanda when he was in charge, according to BBC documents.

They say Mr Sunak wanted to make No 10’s first plans smaller.

They also show that he wasn’t sure if the plan would actually stop people from crossing the Channel.

They recommend that he didn’t want to pay for housing for migrants in special centers, and preferred to use hotels or private homes because they are less expensive.

As the leader of the government, Mr Sunak has made the Rwanda plan a very important task because his party wanted him to.

The plan to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda for processing and possibly resettling them was first announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in April 2022. This is to stop people from crossing the English Channel in small boats.

Mr Sunak became prime minister in October 2022. Before that, he was in charge of the country’s money as the Chancellor of the Exchequer when the Rwanda policy was talked about.

Legal problems have caused the deal to be delayed many times. No asylum seekers have been sent from the UK yet.

The No 10 papers were made in March 2022. Johnson wanted Mr. Sunak to agree to give more money for the plan. This happened shortly before the agreement with Rwanda to handle migrants was made.

They say that Mr. Sunak was worried about how much it would cost to send asylum seekers to the African country, and he wanted to start with only a few people.

They say the chancellor wants to start with fewer items at first, 500 instead of 1,500 in the first year, and 3,000 instead of 5,000 in years two and three.

The final plan’s numbers were never confirmed, but in April 2022 the BBC saw where asylum seekers would stay. It was believed to have enough room for up to 500 people per year, which matches Mr. Sunak’s arguments

The papers show that No 10 and 11 Downing Street disagree on whether the proposed plan will work. The chancellor thinks it won’t.

Mr Sunak doesn’t want to pay for places where migrants can stay, like the Greek-style reception centers. Instead of housing them in hotels, which is costing £3. 5 million each day.

They say the chancellor doesn’t want to pay for places where people can stay without being locked up, like the reception centers in Greece, because hotels are cheaper.

The papers show that the Treasury wanted to send migrants to live in different parts of the country, which is called “dispersal”.

The papers also show that No 10 recommended telling Mr. Sunak to think about how much people like him if he didn’t want to agree to changes to the migration system, including the plan for Rwanda.

The UK Supreme Court said the proposal is not allowed, but the prime minister wants to make a new law so that planes can fly to Rwanda.

However, the news about his uncertainty over the plan might cause problems, especially since some MPs in his party want him to do more to achieve his target of stopping migrants from crossing the Channel, which could mean leaving the European Convention on Human Rights.

Someone who knows the prime minister well told the BBC: “The prime minister always supported the idea of the program as a way to discourage people from doing something. ”

“His job as chancellor was to make sure the government worked well and spent taxpayers’ money wisely. ”

A government official said, “Rishi, as the chancellor, provided funding for the Rwanda scheme and made it a central part of his 10-point plan just one month after becoming the Prime Minister. ”

“Now he is approving the Rwanda Bill because the Supreme Court said it’s okay to start flying again. He is the first leader to ever see a decrease in small boat crossings, which were down by 36% last year.

Labour MP Yvette Cooper said the Tories’ Rwanda scheme is fake and Rishi Sunak is now weak.

The prime minister knew the plan would cost a lot of money and wouldn’t work. He didn’t like the plan when he was in charge of the money. He is very weak and agreed to give Rwanda £400 million without visiting there, to try to make people trust him as a leader.

The Tories always go for flashy ideas instead of handling important issues, like Rwanda or hotels.

“It’s time for them to stop pretending and start following Labour’s plan to take action against the criminal smuggling gangs, make a new security deal with Europe to improve border protection, and create a new team to quickly remove people who shouldn’t be in the UK. ”

What is the plan for helping refugees from Rwanda.

Some asylum seekers arriving in the UK would be sent to Rwanda for processing as part of a five-year trial.

When they arrive, they might be given refugee status and permitted to remain. If not, they could try to live there for different reasons, or ask for protection in a different country.

The government said that anyone who comes to the UK illegally after 1 January 2022 could be sent back to their country, and there would be no limit on how many people could be sent back.

However, up to now, no person asking for safety has been sent away.

The first flight was supposed to happen in June 2022, but it got canceled because of legal problems.

The government says the policy would stop people from coming to the UK in dangerous or illegal ways, like on small boats across the English Channel.

In January 2023, Mr Sunak said that one of his main focuses was to stop boats from coming.

Last month, he promised to continue the work of bringing back the plan after immigration minister Robert Jenrick resigned. Jenrick quit because he thought the government’s new policy wouldn’t work.

Presidency dispels claims of Akufo-Addo supporting Dormaahene’s attacks on Asantehene

President Akufo-Addo’s office has urged Ghanaians to dismiss as baseless and unfounded the assertions circulating on social media that President Akufo-Addo clandestinely provides support to Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, amid what some perceive as continuous ‘attacks’ on Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

In response to the accusations, Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, characterized the allegations as frivolous, untrue, and lacking substantiation. He encouraged Ghanaians to dismiss the claims.

“Kindly disregard commentary being made on social media to the effect that the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is “supporting the Dormaahene” to, as it were, “attack the Asantehene”. These are warped figments of some people’s imaginations, and the general public is implored to treat them with the contempt that they deserve” a Friday January 5 post on Arhin’s Facebook wall read.

He maintained that, on no occasion has the president met with the Dormaahene to prep him on how to disrespect the Asantehene.

According to him, it has never happened in the past and it will never happen.

“Indeed, on no occasion has President Akufo-Addo held a secret meeting with the Dormaahene to, as it were, prop him up to disrespect the Asantehene. No such thing has happened, and no such thing will ever happen. President Akufo-Addo, as he has done since his assumption of office on 7th January 2020, enjoys fruitful working relations with all Chiefs, and will continue to do so until the end of his mandate in January 2025” the Facebook post further read.

For some time now, the Dormaahene has been vocal on the need to change certain components of Ghana’s Chieftaincy Act, specifically, the use of Asantehene and Paramount Chiefs in the constitution.

Tingo Group CEO Dozy Mmobuosi charged by the U.S. authorities for fraud; likely to face 45-year jail sentence

Renowned Nigerian entrepreneur Dozy Mmobuosi who is also the founder of the global agri-fintech conglomerate Tingo Group, is facing charges from U.S. authorities over an alleged “massive fraud” scheme that purportedly deceived both investors and regulatory bodies.

If found guilty of charges including conspiracy, securities fraud, and filing false documents with the SEC, Dozy Mmobuosi could potentially be sentenced to a maximum of 45 years in prison.

As per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mmobuosi is alleged to have artificially inflated the financial performance and assets of his enterprises, including Tingo Mobile and Tingo Foods. Subsequently, these entities were sold to U.S.-listed counterparts, such as Tingo Group and Agri-Fintech Holdings, leading to the issuance of deceptive financial statements.

He also siphoned off cash from these companies and profited from selling their shares at inflated prices.

The SEC, which filed a civil complaint against Mmobuosi and his companies in December 2023, said that Mmobuosi engaged in billions of dollars’ worth of fictitious transactions since 2019, and that his fraud was of a “staggering” scope.

The SEC also suspended trading in Tingo Group and Agri-Fintech Holdings in November 2023, due to concerns about the accuracy and adequacy of publicly available information.

Mmobuosi’s fraud was exposed by Hindenburg Research, a short-selling activist group, which published a report in June 2023, calling Tingo Group an “exceptionally obvious scam”.

The report questioned Mmobuosi’s claims of developing “Nigeria’s first mobile payment app” and accused him of falsifying financials.

The report caused Tingo Group’s shares to drop by over 60 percent.

Mmobuosi, who had planned to raise $500 million in a capital round and launch an IPO in 2022, has denied the allegations and said that he would fight them in court.

He has also claimed that he is a victim of a conspiracy and that his companies are legitimate and profitable.

Four-time World Cup champion from Brazil passes away at age 92

Brazilian soccer star Mario Zagallo, who won four World Cups as a player and coach, has passed away at the age of 92.

Zagallo was a player in the Brazil team that won two World Cups in a row in 1958 and 1962. He played in both final games.

He led the team with famous players like Pele, Jairzinho, and Carlos Alberto to win in 1970.

Zagallo won the World Cup as a coach in 1994 with Carlos Alberto Parreira.

After that competition, he became the Brazil manager again and took them to the final in 1998. They lost to the host team, France.

Zagallo won the World Cup as a player and coach. Others who have done the same are Franz Beckenbauer from Germany and Didier Deschamps from France.

“We are really sad to say that our four-time world champion Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo has passed away,” according to a post on his official Instagram account.

“A loving and caring man who was a dedicated father, a kind grandfather, a supportive father-in-law, a loyal friend, a successful professional, and an amazing person. ” Huge statue “A patriot who leaves behind a history of amazing accomplishments. ”
    Important person in Brazil’s history.

Brazil has won the most World Cup titles, with five in total. Zagallo has played a big role in their success.

As a young person doing national service, he was one of almost 200,000 people at Maracana Stadium who watched Brazil lose to Uruguay in the final match of the 1950 World Cup.

In 2013, Zagallo told BBC Sport, “I will never forget that day. ”

He played his first game for Brazil when he was 26, just before the 1958 tournament. He was a very important player in the team. In the final game, 17-year-old Pele inspired Brazil to win against Sweden, with Zagallo scoring the fourth goal in a 5-2 win.

Zagallo was the only player left from Brazil’s 1958 World Cup-winning team who played in the final.

When Pele got hurt in the 1962 World Cup, Zagallo stepped up and helped defend during the final game, which was unusual for forwards to do at that time. Brazil won against Czechoslovakia.

Zagallo stopped playing soccer in 1965. He played for America, Flamengo, and Botafogo. He also won 33 games for his country.

He began managing at Botafogo and then became the Brazil boss at 38 years old, right before the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

The smart Zagallo, also called ‘The Professor’ and ‘Old Wolf’, put together a team with Pele, Jairzinho, Gerson, Tostao, and Rivellino, who were really good at attacking, and made them very hard to beat.

Brazil won all six of their games and easily beat Italy 4-1 in the final game.

Zagallo continued as the coach for Brazil in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, and they ended up in fourth place.

After that, he coached teams in Brazil and also coached national teams in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. He helped the United Arab Emirates qualify for their first World Cup in 1990. Then he worked as a coordinator for Parreira’s coaching team before the 1994 World Cup.

Brazil won their fourth title by beating Italy in the finals in the United States.

Zagallo’s team was expected to win the 1998 tournament, but France beat them 3-0 in the final. The star player, Ronaldo, had a strange illness on the day of the game.

Brazil’s team won the World Cup in 2002 in Japan and South Korea. Luiz Felipe Scolari was the coach and Zagallo was there to help as a special adviser.

In 2006, he was Parreira’s helper again. Brazil got knocked out by France, and then he stopped working.

Zagallo’s wife, Alcina de Castro, passed away in 2012 after being married for 57 years. They had four kids.

The president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ednaldo Rodrigues, said: “The CBF and Brazilian football are sad about the death of one of our great players. ”

The CBF supports his family and fans during this sad time after the loss of our football idol.

Madrid City Hall issues apology for videos of Blackface Epiphany

Madrid’s city hall said sorry for sharing videos of a white actor in blackface for a popular festival.

In one of the videos, a man with black makeup on his face was speaking in a strong accent, which made some people think it was being racist.

Madrid’s deputy mayor said sorry for the “bad mistake” and blamed the company that made the videos.

Blackface is when white people made fun of black people for fun.

On January 6th, Christians celebrate Epiphany. It’s the day when the Magi – also called the Three Kings or Wise Men – visited Jesus. This day is a big celebration in Spain.

Children clean their shoes the night before a special day called “El Dia de los Reyes” (the Day of the Kings) and leave them out for the Three Kings – Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar – to put gifts inside.

For a lot of people in Spain, the day is very important, like Christmas.

The Three Kings parades happen every year on 5 January and are a popular part of Christmas in Spain.

Before this year’s event, Madrid City Hall paid a company to make special video messages from the kings for the kids in the Spanish capital.

The deputy mayor said that around 20 to 30 video messages were sent out.

The group Afrofeminas strongly criticized the videos and said they were very wrong and irresponsible.

Blackface is a very old tradition that started about 200 years ago. Many people think it’s racist and really offensive.

Many times, it means that someone, usually with white skin, paints their face darker to look like a black person.

Many important people, including the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, have been involved in blackface controversies recently.

  • Biden criticises Trump for inciting Capitol riot in 2024 campaign speech

Biden criticises Trump for inciting Capitol riot in 2024 campaign speech

In his first speech to get elected in 2024, President Joe Biden said that he thinks Donald Trump could be a big problem for American democracy.

Mr Biden said that the most important question right now is whether democracy is still very important to America.

“He said that’s what the 2024 election is all about. ”

Mr Trump said the speech was filled with scary lies and called Mr. Biden a danger to democracy.

The former president said at a rally in Iowa that Biden has a consistent history of being weak, not able to do his job well, being dishonest and not succeeding.

Mr Biden’s speech talked about something he has been talking about a lot in recent years.

This time, he clearly connected the US Capitol attack on 6 January 2021 to support his argument.

That day, people who support Mr Trump went into Congress and used violence to try to stop the lawmakers from officially saying that Mr Biden won the election. This happened just a few weeks before Mr Biden was supposed to start as president.

Mr Trump keeps saying the wrong thing that he won the 2020 election, even though it’s not true.

The ex-president has tried to change how people see the attack on January 6th, calling it a “beautiful day. ” He has praised the people who were involved as “patriots” and “political prisoners” and said he would forgive them if he becomes president again.

Mr Biden said that Mr Trump is trying to twist history and kept criticizing Mr Trump by name.

Mr Biden said that the mob with Trump was not a peaceful protest, it was a violent attack. “They were rebels, not loyal citizens. ” They did not want to protect the Constitution, they wanted to ruin the Constitution.

“He calls people who disagree with him vermin. ” He said that Americans’ blood is being poisoned, using the same language as Nazi Germany.

The Trump campaign did not answer a request for comment right away.

Jason Miller, a top adviser for Donald Trump’s election campaign, said that Mr. Biden is not focusing on important topics for the 2024 election.

Mr Miller said that instead of helping the people hurt by Biden’s economic policies or the weak border, Biden wants to use the government against his main political opponent.

Mr Biden keeps talking about protecting democracy many times.

In 2020, he ran for office promising to make America normal again. Before the 2022 midterms, Mr. Biden said the election was very important for our country.

On Friday, Mr Biden chose Valley Forge, Pennsylvania as the location to talk about important themes related to the American Revolutionary War.

The music added to the mood as Mr. Biden walked to the stage. They played a song from Hamilton, a musical about the Founding Fathers, on the speakers.

After trying for a year to make Mr. Biden look better in the polls by talking about his economic plans, his campaign is now focusing on democracy and pointing out the big differences between him and Mr.

Mr Biden has used this strategy before and it has worked well.

Democrats did better than expected in the 2022 midterms by defeating Republican opponents who supported Trump and doubted the fairness of US elections.

Ashley Etienne, who used to work for Biden’s campaign, said that this issue is really important to Democratic supporters.

Ms Etienne said that democracy is really important to who we are as people. “But it works and helps you win. ” It’s a message that says we won. And it helped bring together a large group of voters.

Mr Biden’s friends in the Democratic party were happy that he chose to emphasize the importance of democratic values.

“I’m happy the president is speaking out today to support democracy, freedom, and to show that Trump is a threat to all of that,” said Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who is a member of the Democratic Party, to reporters.

New polls show that Americans’ opinions about the January 6 attack are very different depending on their political party. Republicans are now less likely to think it was a violent attack compared to three years ago. One out of four Americans think the FBI, not Mr. Trump’s supporters, caused the riot, according to a poll by the Washington Post and the University of Maryland.

Colorado officer jailed for killing 23-year-old

A white ex-police officer in Colorado has been given a 14-month prison sentence for the 2019 killing of a black man.

41-year-old Randy Roedema was found to be responsible for the death of Elijah McClain in October.

McClain, who was 23 years old, was held by the police and given a medicine called ketamine by a medic. He died after that, even though he had not done anything wrong.

The judge said he was surprised by the lack of care for McClain’s pain.

Another police officer, Jason Rosenblatt, was found not guilty of the same charges last year.

Both men were charged with using too much force and not listening to the unarmed man who kept saying, “I can’t breathe. ”

McClain died in Aurora, near Denver, three days after the police put him in a chokehold, injected him with ketamine to make him calm, and his heart stopped beating.

At the Colorado court on Friday, Judge Mark Werner said he was surprised by the lack of care for Elijah McClain‘s pain.

McClain was not a big threat to anyone and was restrained with handcuffs, according to Werner.

Roedema told the judge that he and the other officers acted the way they were trained to.

McClain’s death got more attention again after George Floyd was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2020.

Before Elijah’s punishment, his mother Sheneen McClain said Roedema will always be a bully who has a badge.
A gathering was held to ask for fairness for Elijah McClain on the one year anniversary of his passing.

UEW denies affiliation with any educational institution in Nigeria

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has denied allegations suggesting the existence of a remote or satellite campus in Nigeria.

The university’s administration has asserted that any conflicting reports or statements are unfounded and has urged the public to be vigilant.

On Thursday, reports circulated in some media spaces alleging that UEW’s operations in Nigeria were banned due to the alleged awarding of questionable degrees.

In response, UEW released a statement on Friday, January 5, categorically denying the claims and emphasising its commitment to delivering quality education exclusively at its campuses in Ghana.

“It is crucial to emphasize that UEW does not maintain any satellite campuses, physical establishments, or remote operations within Nigeria.

“Additionally, we have no affiliations with any educational institution or entity in Nigeria for purposes of awarding degrees.”

“Our commitment has always been and remains focused on delivering quality education at our esteemed campuses in Ghana.”

UEW thus urged both the media and the general public to verify information before disseminating it on public platforms.

“The Management of UEW urges the media, stakeholders, and the general public to verify information from credible sources before dissemination to avoid misconceptions and misinformation.”

“We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and excellence in all our operations,” the statement said.

  • Japan’s little company reports earthquakes

    Japan’s little company reports earthquakes

When a very strong earthquake hit a remote part of Japan on New Year’s Day, a small company warned millions of people. The company has a history of doing big things even though it is small.

NERV is managed by a small private company called Gehirn, which means brain in German. Gehirn has only 13 full-time employees.

However, its alerts about Japan’s frequent earthquakes are usually quicker than the ones issued by official organizations and the country‘s public broadcaster, NHK.

NERV’s account in Japanese on X (formerly Twitter) has 2. 2 million followers, and there are 35,000 people who use it in English. The app came out in September 2019 and has been downloaded over four million times from the Apple Store and Google Play.

It was made in 2010 as an account by a 19-year-old named Daiki Ishimori.

X is very popular in Japan and is the main social media platform for getting information about disasters in the country, especially after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

NERV gives information about earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions as they happen. They also tell people about bad weather like typhoons, flooding, and heavy snow.

The account gathers and shares information about natural disasters from different agencies. It often shares the information faster than the agencies do.

Mr Ishimori said that NERV is very affected by a popular anime TV show called Neon Genesis Evangelion. The show is about a world after a big disaster where half of the people are gone.

The account is named after an organization in the show that warns people about dangers to humanity.

“I made NERV as a fake account to make fun of Twitter because it was becoming popular,” Mr. Ishimori tells the BBC.

“I began as a hobby to program tweets automatically about weather alerts using data from the Japan Meteorological Agency. ”

Back then, the account only had about 300 people following it.

However, in 2011, the strongest earthquake ever recorded hit Japan.

The earthquake caused a tsunami and a nuclear accident in Fukushima. It also caused a lot of deaths in Ishinomaki in Miyagi.

Mr Ishimori couldn’t reach his family for four days. “Actually, I thought they were probably dead,” he remembers. He later learned that although his close family was safe, one of his aunts had passed away.

“I found out that we needed different ways, not just TV and radio, to share disaster information,” he says, because TV didn’t work when the power went out.

He began talking about earthquakes, and as Japan had more natural disasters, the account gained lots of new followers.

But, the recent changes to X affected NERV during the earthquake on New Year’s Day.

Last year, X started making users pay to use its application programming interface (API), which connects X to outside systems and allows for automatic posts on the platform.

Before, the platform’s API was free to use, but now you can only make up to 1,500 free automated posts every month.

Brain has a basic plan that costs $100 (£79) a month and allows 100 posts a day.

NERV sent out alerts about an earthquake and tsunami on Monday. They said it looked like they reached the limit and told their followers to download their app.

A few hours later, X registered its accounts in both Japanese and English as “public utility”, which fixed the problem.

However, NERV had already begun moving away from the platform in 2019 when its account was temporarily locked during an earthquake.

Mr Ishimori says that if we use someone else’s platform, their rules can change. That’s why we should focus on our own platform.

He says his goal has always been to “make Japan safer” – not to make money. He also wants to make the NERV app easy for everyone to use, including people with disabilities.

However, Ishimori agrees that as the app becomes more popular, his company needs to make money.

In 2020, the company started a paid membership program called the “supporters’ club” to help pay for its expenses. The cost is about 120 million yen ($829,200; £653,172) per year.

Mr Ishimori says we are not making money yet. He also says that about one third of our costs are paid by supporters.

“We need more money to buy new information, so that’s why we’re still losing money,” he says with a laugh.

Mr Ishimori feels really bad because he couldn’t help his aunt in 2011 and it still bothers him.

“We are aware that there will be another strong earthquake and a big tsunami. ” My goal is to make it easy for people to get information about disasters.

Akufo-Addo eulogises E.T. Mensah, says he was a good source of advice

President Akufo-Addo has paid homage to the late Enoch Teye Mensah, a distinguished Council of State member and former Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram.

Expressing profound sorrow, the President conveyed deep sadness at the demise of E.T. Mensah, recognizing the substantial impact of his passing.

He noted that it will take him a considerable amount of time to recover from the loss.

“He was a warm, generous, gregarious man with a keen intellect and wonderful sense of humour. In his element, you could find no better company, and he was a good source of advice for me as President of the Republic. I have lost a good friend, Ghana has lost a worthy patriot,” he said.

The tribute added a personal touch to the remembrance of E.T. Mensah, reflecting the close relationship between the two.

  • Prince Andrew’ stayed weeks’ at Epstein residence – Witness

Prince Andrew’ stayed weeks’ at Epstein residence – Witness

Prince Andrew was at Jeffrey Epstein‘s house in Florida for many weeks, according to new court documents. Epstein was a sex offender and a financier.

Juan Alessi, who took care of Epstein’s house in Palm Beach, said that the Duke of York slept in the guest room and got massages every day.

The testimony is in about 1,300 pages of evidence that came out on Friday.

The documents also show how Epstein found and used victims for sexual exploitation, which is troubling.

This week, a federal court ordered that many pages of legal documents be made public.

The legal documents are from a 2015 court case where someone accused Ghislaine Maxwell, who used to be Jeffrey Epstein’s girlfriend, of saying bad things about them.

In 2009, Mr. Alessi told investigators that Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson were friends of Epstein and Maxwell. The duchess didn’t do anything wrong and Prince Andrew says he didn’t do anything wrong either.

When asked if they ever got massages at the Palm Beach mansion, Mr. Alessi said, “Prince Andrew did. ”

He said the duchess came to the house for a short time, but Prince Andrew stayed with us for many weeks and got massages every day.

“I don’t know if he got more than one massage each day, but I think he only got one,” he said.

In a legal document that was made public this week, a person named Jane Doe 3 claims that she was made to have sex with Prince Andrew when she was 17. This allegedly happened in Maxwell’s apartment in London, in New York, and on Epstein’s private resort in the US Virgin Islands, along with other underage girls. This claim is not new, and the British royal has always said they did nothing wrong.

In 2019, the Duke of York told the BBC that he didn’t remember meeting Ms Giuffre. In 2022, he gave her money to settle her lawsuit for sexual assault, but didn’t admit he did anything wrong.

In the papers released on Friday, people said they were told to find and bring girls to Epstein.

Tony Figueroa, a person who used to work with Ms. Giuffre, said that Epstein and Maxwell gave $200 for each girl that went to the mansion.

Mr Figueroa said that when he was 19 years old, he was given money to bring young girls to Epstein’s house and he often saw other young women there.

The girls would talk to Maxwell in Epstein’s kitchen for 10 to 15 minutes before going upstairs to give a “massage”, according to the papers.

Mr Figueroa thought the girls were brought to give sexual favors to Epstein.

The legal papers show that Mr. Figueroa said “No” when he was asked if any of them were real massage therapists.

Mr Figueroa said that he often asked girls from his high school to join his group.

He did not ask how old they were, but he thought they were all 16 to 19 years old.

In 2009, Mr Alessi said he remembered seeing Donald Trump at Epstein’s mansion. Donald Trump owns the nearby Mar-a-Lago golf club.

The witness said Mr Trump had dinner with Mr Alessi in the kitchen, but never got a massage during any visit.

Mr Alessi said he also saw Bill Clinton on Epstein’s private plane.

Neither Clinton nor Mr. Trump are being accused of doing anything wrong in connection to their relationship with the disgraced financier.

The trove includes a document from 2010 where Adriana Ross, a former model and assistant of Epstein from Poland, gave a statement. She was mentioned in a 2007 agreement as someone who might have helped Epstein with his crimes.

They asked her if she knew that a former security adviser to President Clinton went to Epstein’s house three weeks after the police searched it in 2005.

The lawyer asked Ms. Ross if Mr. Berger, who passed away in 2015, had warned Epstein about the upcoming raid. She said no to answering.

She was asked if she knew that a friend of Epstein brought three 12-year-old girls from France to him for his birthday, and then sent them back the next day after sexually exploiting them.

    She said: “I won’t answer. ”

The lawyer said that a French person, Jean-Luc Brunel, brought the girls here.

Ms Ross said no again. Brunel committed suicide in a Paris jail in 2022 while waiting to go to trial for rape.

A lot of the information that was made public this week was already talked about during Maxwell’s trial.

She is the daughter of a famous publisher, Robert Maxwell. In 2021, she was found guilty and is now in prison for 20 years for helping Epstein find people.

In 2008, Epstein admitted to paying for sex from a young person and in 2019 he died by suicide while waiting for trial for sex-trafficking.

  • Supreme Court to decide whether Trump may contest for presidency

Supreme Court to decide whether Trump may contest for presidency

The highest court in the United States will decide if Donald Trump can run for president. This is an important and historic case.

The judges decided to hear Mr. Trump’s appeal because Colorado wouldn’t let him be on the 2024 ballot there.

The court will decide the case in February and the decision will affect the whole country.

Lawsuits in many states are trying to remove Mr. Trump from his position. They say he was part of a riot at the US Capitol three years ago.

The legal problems depend on whether a constitutional amendment from the Civil War time means Mr. Trump can’t run for president.

The Supreme Court agreed to hear Mr. Trump’s appeal after 27 state attorneys general asked them to reject Colorado’s decision.

They say that taking Mr. Trump off the ballot would cause a lot of problems.

“The submission says that it is causing confusion in the upcoming election. ”

Moreover, it disrupts the specific duties of the Congress, the States, and the courts.

The 14th Amendment of the US Constitution says that people who have rebelled against the government can’t hold federal office. However, the former president’s lawyers say this rule doesn’t apply to the president.

His lawyers say that if the Colorado Supreme Court decision is followed, it would unlawfully prevent many voters in Colorado from voting and could also be used as an example to prevent many more voters across the country from voting.

Mr Trump is fighting against a decision made by voting officials in Maine to take his name off the ballot.

After the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday, Colorado’s Secretary of State Jena Griswold confirmed that the state’s ballots for the next presidential primary elections have been approved and that Mr. Trump’s name will be on them.

The votes in each state will decide which people can run for president in the November election.

Colorado is scheduled for the start of March, shortly after the Supreme Court makes a decision on Mr.

Ms Griswold said that the Supreme Court of the United States has agreed to hear the case, and because of this, Donald Trump will be listed as a candidate on the ballot.

Last month, the Colorado high court made a decision with 4 judges in favor and 3 against. It’s the first time in US history that the 14th Amendment has been used to reject a candidate from running for president.

This is the first time the Supreme Court will think about what the clause means.

Mr Trump is the top Republican candidate to compete against President Joe Biden, who is a Democrat, in the upcoming November election.

Courts in Minnesota and Michigan have rejected attempts to remove Mr. Trump from his position. Other cases in Oregon are waiting for a decision.

The US Supreme Court mainly has conservative judges, and three of them were chosen by Mr. Trump when he was president.

However, they mostly decided he lost his lawsuits against Mr. Biden in the 2020 election.

The court will hear the case quickly and will have a debate about it on 8 February.

Mr Trump’s lawyers have to submit their first written arguments by January 18th.

The people who want Mr. Trump to be disqualified have to give their reasons by January 31st.

The top US court getting involved reminds people of the 2000 election between George Bush and Al Gore, which also went to the Supreme Court.

The court with mostly conservative judges stopped the vote recount in Florida, which helped Mr. Bush win the election.

Professor Cart Tobias from the University of Richmond says that the “very fast” process was expected and needed because there are more and more cases being filed in different states across the country.

With the state primary elections coming up soon, election officials in many states need to get ready and plan for smooth voting processes on short notice.

Cases at the Supreme Court usually take between four and 12 months, which is much longer than the few weeks currently set for justices.

The court will probably make a decision before the Super Tuesday election in March, when Colorado and other states will choose who they want to run for president.

On the day of the riot at the US Capitol, people who support Mr. Trump went into Congress while the lawmakers were officially declaring Mr. Biden as the winner of the election.

On that day, the former president spoke at a gathering outside the White House. He said things that were not true about the election and told the crowd to “fight like hell”, but also to walk “peacefully” to the Capitol.

People who disagree with Mr. Trump say he shouldn’t be allowed to be president because of what he did during the riot and because he tried to change the election result in states that he lost.

Mr Trump is being tried in federal court and state court in Georgia for trying to change the 2020 election result. But he has not been charged with inciting a riot in either case.

Akufo-Addo has held no secret meeting with Dormaahene – Eugene Arhin

The Presidency has issued a swift response to circulating rumors on social media suggesting that President Akufo-Addo is endorsing Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, in an alleged attack on the revered Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Communications Director at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, has categorically dismissed the claims.

In a Facebook post, Eugene Arhin, emphasized that the claims are mere products of individuals’ imagination. Arhin urged the public to dismiss such assertions with disdain.

“Indeed, on no occasion has President Akufo-Addo held a secret meeting with the Dormaahene to, as it were, prop him up to disrespect the Asantehene. No such thing has happened, and no such thing will ever happen,” portions of the statement read.

He further noted that President Akufo-Addo will continue to work harmoniously with all traditional leaders in the country until the end of his tenure.

  • You have failed us – Togbe Afede XIV tells Bank of Ghana

You have failed us – Togbe Afede XIV tells Bank of Ghana

The revered Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State and former President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV, has taken a bold stance, declaring that the Bank of Ghana has fallen short in its responsibilities.

The self-congratulatory tone of Bank of Ghana (BOG) officials was notable as they highlighted a significant decline in year-on-year inflation. In November 2023, inflation dropped to 26.4%, showcasing a notable improvement from 35.2% in October 2023 and a substantial decrease from the high of 54.1% recorded in December 2022.

Anticipating this trend, I reflected, given the considerable price hikes and exchange rate depreciation observed in the corresponding periods of 2022. The intricacies of year-on-year inflation figures lie in their susceptibility to significant influences from events that occurred a year prior. This inherent characteristic explains the paradox where year-on-year inflation might surge in a specific month, even if the overall price levels have decreased during that period, and conversely, it could drop despite a rise in the general price level.

You cannot describe what happened to prices and exchange rates towards the end of 2022 as “a blip” when the effects are still with us. The markets simply adjusted to the rot in the system. A return to the relatively lower inflation rates of the past does not mean prices have become lower. A year-on-year inflation rate of 26.4% in November 2023 is not worthy of celebration. Zambia and Kenya, exposed to the same global shocks, recorded 12.9% and 6.8%, respectively. And the US dollar is currently trading at more than 150% of its price (cedis) in June 2022.

But I am glad that Bank of Ghana (BOG) has finally bitten the bullet, accepting that it does not have to set its policy rate above “past inflation”. After decades of insisting that its policy rate must be fixed above year-on-year changes in the consumer price index (CPI) to ensure “positive real returns” to investors, BOG had over the past several months, following the collapse of our economy, kept their policy rate below the year-on-year changes in the CPI. Maybe it was the case that they just could not set the policy rate above the recent hyperinflation rates.

In my December 2022 article, “Our Self-Inflicted Monumental Economic Crisis”, I presented my thoughts on the reasons why we, Ghanaians, find ourselves in this undeserved economic mess, given our massive human and material resource endowments.

The Ghana we have today is obviously not what our founding fathers dreamt of. We have failed woefully but have pretended otherwise. Instead of giving hope, our leaders have created a frightening sense of helplessness among the populace, especially the youth.

As I said earlier in December 2021, during a courtesy call by the Speaker of Parliament, Ghana would have filed for bankruptcy if it were a company. This was effectively what we did when we went back to the IMF for bailout and implemented the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP). We eventually defaulted on our debts. Holders of Government bonds suffered massive losses, and the outlook remains dim.

We have been brought to the brink by despicably dishonest, corrupt, reckless, arrogant, and divisive leadership. We are also victims of bad fiscal and monetary policies. We owe our relative peace and stability to the resilience and patience of Ghanaians, and I pray that we remain so. I know what suffering is like, and that is why I will continue to share my thoughts on our development challenges.

    AN ECONOMY IN SHAMBLES

Very alarming, as I wrote in my December 2022 article, is the fact that we have piled on so much debt, and are now Africa’s most indebted country, yet we still lack the basic socio-economic infrastructure required for development – good roads, hospitals, schools, etc. Making matters worse, are the massive judgment debts, the results of greed and recklessness, staring us in the face.

The dollar had been on the loose, gaining almost 200% over the cedi since 2017. The cedi is still under pressure notwithstanding our positive trade surplus in recent times. Total exports at the end of October 2023 stood at USD13.4 billion. Compared to the total import value of $11.3 billion, the result was a positive trade balance of about $2.1 billion.

Inflation, as I have already said, is still high, at 26.4%, and business failures, joblessness and poverty levels are worse than ever. That is why too many of our younger compatriots are desperately on the lookout for ways out of our potentially rich but poor country.

We are victims of predatory economics, where policies or decisions were presented to us well-packaged, only for us to realise during implementation that they were designed to benefit a privileged few, as we saw with some of the COVID-19 initiatives and in the ill-fated award of Electricity Company of Ghana to PDS Ghana Ltd. We are also victims of a constitution that protects even our worst leaders. The result is the annoying and arrogant display of “conspicuous consumption” by our leaders and their cronies.

I hold the view that poverty is not God’s desire for man. So, I remain optimistic that we can turn our fortunes around and make a paradise out of our beautiful country, maximise the welfare and happiness of every Ghanaian so that we can enjoy genuine sustainable peace and unity and make it unnecessary for the youth to embark on hazardous journeys in search for greener pastures.

But we need, first, to identify and understand the causes of our predicament. So much has been said about corruption at a scale we could never have imagined, our battered reputation, bad fiscal policy, lawlessness, divisive tribal politics, our weak institutions, our attitudes, etc. But, as I have said many times, one segment of economic policy that has escaped scrutiny over the years is the Bank of Ghana’s monetary policy.

THE CHICKENS HAVE COME HOME TO ROOST

Recent events, including the Government’s inability to service its debt obligations, have finally exposed BOG. Over the past several months, BOG maintained its policy rate below the year-on-year inflation rate, departing from its previous approach. And the Bank recently announced massive losses in 2022, totalling GHS60 billion, and a year-end negative net worth of GHS55 billion, making it technically bankrupt. This is unprecedented in our history. The loss, equal to 10 % of our 2022 GDP of GHS606.82 billion (USD72.24 billion at the average 2022 cedi-dollar exchange rate of 8.4:1), is one of the largest one-year losses ever recorded by a central bank.

It is an irony that BOG finds itself in this mess after it only recently aided the collapse of several “poorly managed” local banks, savings and loans companies, microfinance institutions, finance

houses, and fund management companies, at a cost of GHS20 billion, when an estimated GHS9 billion could have kept them in operation. Such a wasteful approach to cleaning up the financial sector could only have been pursued by an organization that thought it had too much money.

In the competitive world of private enterprise, where standards and consequences of failure are exacting, BOG would have gone under. Details of the 2022 annual report reveal budgeted and actual expenditures that do not look like those of a struggling country’s central bank: USD250 million for a new head office, equivalent to 0.35% of our GDP; GHS97.4 million for travel; GHS131 million for motor vehicle maintenance/running; GHS32 million for communication; GHS67 million for computers; GHS336.9 million for currency issue expenses (currency in circulation amounted to GHS40.73 billion); and GHS8.6 million for directors.

And they rewarded themselves very well, increasing their salaries by a whopping 68%! Personnel costs amounted to GHS1.6 billion. With a total of 2,203 employees, this means an average of a colossal GHS726,282 per annum or GHS60,523 per month per employee. Staff loans amounted to GHS1.247 billion, an average of GHS566,818 per employee. I still cannot believe BOG staff are living in a different world. Unlike in the case of the Bank of England (BOE), with a labour force of 4,793, BOG’s financial statements do not disclose the remuneration of individual executives.

BOG, guilty of the poor business practices it had accused the collapsed banks of, had obviously been misled by the spurious profits it reported in previous years to embark on the recklessness depicted above. I call them “spurious profits” because they included revenues (interest payments due from the Government) that were never going to be realised. The Bank reported a profit of GHS1.57 billion (USD270 million) in 2020. Comparatively, the Bank of England (BOE) made a profit of only GBP57 million (USD76 million) in 2020/21. The size of the Ghanaian economy was USD72 billion, and that of the UK was USD2.7 trillion. Thus, BOG reported almost 4 times as much profit as BOE, even though the UK economy was 40 times that of Ghana.

It is surprising that the BOG, the Government’s bankers, had been oblivious to the obvious possibility of the Government defaulting on its obligations, and failed to make appropriate provisions. It is also surprising that the external auditors appeared not to have noticed the poor quality of debt owed to BOG by the Government. The BOG directors were similarly unaware. The impairment did not happen suddenly. In effect, BOG was monitoring the quality of the assets of the financial institutions it regulates but forgot to examine its own.

BOG’s huge “profits” were largely the result of unnecessarily high interest rates which have been detrimental to the real sectors. These profits supported their unnecessarily high operating costs, including the abnormally high remunerations paid to staff and directors. The commercial banks also benefitted from the high-interest rates. But, like BOG, their debtors (Government and other loan customers) could not bear these abnormally high lending rates, hence the massive debt losses these banks also reported in 2022.

We are not out of the woods yet because the impact of all this on the economy means defaults by borrowers will continue for some time. Just a few months before our economy ran into trouble, BOG was praising the banking sector, claiming, “The banking industry’s performance has defied the general economic downturn with strong growth across key metrics including total assets and

deposits, as well as sustained improvement in profitability within the industry during the first half of 2022.” And that, “The sector’s total assets increased by 22.8 per cent to GHS200billion at the end of the period. The domestic component of total assets recorded a higher growth rate of 23.5 per cent in June 2022 compared to a growth of 18 per cent in June 2021”. They added further that “…the higher growth in the industry’s assets by mid-year was primarily on the back of an upsurge in deposits and borrowings during the review period”.

But as I pointed out, the undeniable truth is that all these “growths” were fueled by high-interest rates and were, effectively, a transfer of assets from government, the public, and the real sectors to the banking sector. BOG and the commercial banks’ huge parasitic profits put a lot of stress not only on the private sector but on the public sector as well. They imposed a huge burden on those outside the banking sector and frustrated the realisation of the structural changes needed in the economy.

POLICY RATE, INTEREST RATES AND INFLATION

BOG’s monetary policy has escaped scrutiny over the years because many of us had assumed that the ladies and gentlemen at BOG were infallible professionals. We have been wrong, at least so says the evidence.

Not since 2003 when I complained about monetary policy in this country has there been any open debate about how monetary policy has been conducted. The arguments I made in 2003, more than 20 years ago, are still valid today. BOG had virtually indexed its policy rate to year-on-year inflation, a self-fulfilling prophecy, with predictably adverse consequences for inflation, the value of the cedi, and the economy at large. I believe many of us have now realised that the failure of monetary policy has been a key part of our problems.

By this dogmatic interest rate policy, BOG tried to keep its policy rate above year-on-year inflation. In their December 2021 article in response to my concerns, BOG argued that “The simple theory underpinning finance suggests that investors will always have to be compensated for inflation and that investors always factor in real interest rates in making decisions. With an inflation rate of 11 per cent, the central bank’s policy rate of 13.5 per cent implies a real interest rate of 2.5 per cent”. That is poor economics, sadly supported by some “eminent African economists in their comment on the concerns I raised, thus, “..it should be noted that 13.5% lending rate is nominal. Ghana’s current inflation rate is about 10.5%, and hence the real rate is 3%”.

Now that the economy has taken a nosedive, the BOG suddenly became happy to keep its policy rate below the year-on-year inflation rate over several months, when they had always argued for the opposite.

It is important to appreciate that year-on-year inflation is a historical concept, and that, it is not past price changes that interest rates must seek to compensate for. The relevant inflation rate for fixing the policy rate is expected inflation, adjusted for seasonality, etc. Expected inflation is what astute investors are interested in, much the same way they look at forward price-earnings (P/E) ratios as opposed to trailing P/E ratios in evaluating shares for investment purposes.

Future price trends are measured more accurately by the annualised latest average changes in the CPI, say a three-month average, adjusted for food and energy prices, etc. (Core CPI), which would give better real-time information for fine-tuning monetary policy.

The Fisher effect, named after Irving Fisher, defines the link between inflation, nominal interest rate, and real interest rate, and explains the tendency for interest rates to rise when expected inflation is high and fall when expected inflation is low. Thus, a fall in expected inflation, if the expected real interest rate is unchanged, should cause an equal fall in the nominal interest rate. In our current context, the expected inflation is BOG’s 8% target. So, 8% plus the expected real interest rate should give us an acceptable nominal interest rate. The current policy rate of 30% translates into an expected real interest rate of 22%!

Sadly, our economists have failed to realise the fallacy in comparing the current interest rate to past year-on-year inflation to determine the real interest rate. BOG’s fixation of its policy rate based on year-on-year inflation, with little or no interest in recent month-on-month changes, has been a self-fulfilling prophecy that has only succeeded in importing past inflation into the future, trapping us in a vicious circle of high inflation→ high-interest rate→ high inflation, and making Ghana’s inflation rate one of the worst on the continent over the past two decades.

POOR VS RICH COUNTRY; COST-PUSH VS DEMAND-PULL INFLATION

BOG’s persistence in trying to fight inflation in Ghana using high interest rates does not make logical sense, especially when it is indexed to (historical) year-on-year inflation. Raising interest rates to fight inflation often works in a rich country like the UK. The minimum wage in the UK is GBP9.50 an hour or GBP76 for an 8-hour workday. In Ghana, the minimum wage is GHS14.88 per day, less than GBP1. The average cost of a litre of petrol currently is about GBP1.57 in the UK, that is, 2% of the daily minimum wage. In Ghana, the average cost of petrol is about GHS14, that is, 94% of the daily minimum wage.

The relativities are similar to other necessities of life. So, unlike in the UK, increasing interest rates will only increase the cost of living in Ghana, but will not encourage the average Ghanaian, who can hardly make ends meet, to spend less and save more.

Also, it is difficult to see how policy rate increases can fight cost-pushed inflation resulting from factors like food or crude oil price increases or increased taxes on petroleum products. Sadly, even at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when income levels had fallen worldwide, and stimulus packages were being implemented everywhere to boost economic activity, BOG still ensured that we suffered under strangulating high interest rates.

EFFECTS OF BOG’S INFLATION TARGETING MONETARY POLICY APPROACH

BOG’s monetary policy over the years has succeeded in creating one of the most profitable banking sectors in Africa per the accounting reports, while ensuring a growth-stifling high inflation→ high-interest rate→ high inflation environment, with disastrous consequences for the cedi and the economy.

    Inflation

BOG’s approach to inflation targeting has not worked. In December 2021 BOE increased its prime rate from 0.1% to 0.25%, to meet a 2% inflation target. BOG’s policy rate, on the other hand, had no relationship with its target inflation of 8%. BOG raised its policy rate from 13.5% to 14.5%, focusing more on the reported year-on-year (past) inflation of 12.2%, in a bid to maintain a “positive real interest rate” based on their awkward understanding of real interest rate.

It is worth noting that Zambia’s November 2021 inflation rate was 19.3%, but the Central Bank of Zambia’s (CBZ’s) prime rate was as low as 9%. Zambia recorded 12.9% inflation in November 2023, while Ghana’s current inflation rate is 26.4%. Today, CBZ’s prime rate is 11%. But BOG, which is still targeting inflation of 8%, maintains a policy rate of 30.0%. BOG’s perennial inflation target of 8±2% thus appears to be at best an expression of desire which has become a template in their monetary policy releases.

As I pointed out earlier, the reduction that we saw in the headline inflation rate recently was only a natural result of what happened to prices one year ago. It should be noted that, even though maintaining the current high policy rate will not help the fight against inflation, a reduction in BOG’s policy rate from 30% to 20%, for example, should not produce inflationary consequences. There is therefore absolutely no need to maintain the current high policy rate of 30%.

    Interest Rates

BOG is still pursuing the same, growth-stifling, demand-side approach to the inflation problem, and we find ourselves locked in the vicious circle of high inflation→ high-interest rate→ high inflation. Sadly, the IMF has encouraged the use of the wrong monetary policy and inflation concept over the years. As our “advisors”, they share the blame for the mess we are in and have an obligation to help. I suspect some other African countries outside the French block have suffered similarly.

So, after taking the difficult step to reduce domestic debt through the draconian DDEP, we are still piling up short-term debt – 91 Day Bill at 29.35%, 182 Day Bill at 31.95% and 364 at 32.49%.

    Currency Depreciation

BOG’s astronomically high monetary policy rates have burdened our economy over the past 20-plus years. It has not only fueled increases in money supply over the years, fueling price increases but has also undermined the cedi. Contrary to their claims, we cannot use “higher interest rates to maintain exchange rate stability”, especially when they have failed to protect the cedi as the only legal tender in Ghana. High-interest rates have not and will not help us “maintain exchange rate stability”. Parity laws tell us the opposite.

On November 1, 2007, GHS1 was equivalent to USD1. GHS1 invested in the Ghana Government’s 91-day treasury bill on that day and rolled over for 15 years would grow to about GHS12 on October 31, 2022, at the height of our economic crisis. Coincidentally, the price of USD1 on October 31, 2022 was about GHS13! Obviously, this huge return on the Cedi has been inflationary and pulled with it the value of the dollar in Cedi terms. Inflation was 40.4% in October 2022. Along with it, the dollar went up 141%, from average GHS6 in October 2021 to GHS14.47, implying cedi depreciation of 58.53%.

    External Borrowing Costs

The unnecessarily high-interest rate numbers have fed into the external market perception of our outlook. We cannot through our policy rate give an impression of a high inflation risk outlook and expect the external financial markets to think differently. BOG’s approach has been costly for us in the international financial markets, where it has created an exaggerated risk perception, with adverse implications for our credit rating and borrowing costs. COCOBOD is currently suffering the consequence, of having to borrow at an unprecedented 8%.

Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, October 7, 2022, in Washington, DC, on the 2022 edition of the Babacar Ndiaye Lecture, Dr Hippolyte Fofack, Chief Economist and Director of Research at Afreximbank elaborated on the importance of the year’s theme, “The Developing World in a Turbulent Global Financial Architecture”:

“Africa’s total external debt is about USD726 billion. That makes it less than a third of Italy’s debt estimated at about $2.8 trillion. And expressed as a percentage of GDP, Africa’s total external debt is 27%, compared to 130% in Europe. Yet African countries are more at risk of debt distress than their European counterparts largely as a result of large spreads and default-driven borrowing rates assigned to African sovereign and corporate entities.”

    The Economy at Large

High-interest rates have made the cost of capital excessive and made it difficult for businesses to borrow to invest in the real sectors of the economy, especially manufacturing, making it difficult to realise the value addition we crave. So, we have remained exporters of primary products.

They have also hurt our ability to expand production capacity generally and perpetuated our import dependence. Local entrepreneurs have suffered more, and their inability to borrow, invest and increase local ownership has ensured the foreign domination of our economy. These and other structural bottlenecks have had significant supply-side and cost-push effects on inflation.

Thus, BOG’s policies have been a stumbling block to creating an enabling financial market and have inadvertently frustrated the restructuring of the economy, which they have often identified as the solution to our balance of payments deficit and currency depreciation problems.

    BOG MANDATE, DIVIDENDS AND GOVERNANCE

We should remember that price stability is not an end in itself. Probably more important is growth and employment generation, in which the BOG must show interest. We need to clarify BOG’s mandate and improve its governance to mitigate the profit motive.

In principle, BOG should have turned over its profit to its only shareholder, the Government, which should determine how much of the profit BOG can keep. BOG should not be able to make decisions on profit distribution independently of the shareholder. That is not part of Central Bank independence. But shareholder apathy has allowed BOG to keep and misuse its “profits”.It is also important to point out that the independence of the BOG does not require that the Governor should be Chairman. It will enhance internal checks if the two roles are separated.

Russians relocate residents of Ukrainian-affected city

Russia is moving people out of Belgorod because Ukraine attacked the city and it’s not safe for them to stay there.

On Friday, governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that a few families had moved out of the city, which is near the border of Ukraine.

Over the weekend, 25 people died and over 100 were hurt in one of the worst attacks in Russia since it entered Ukraine in February 2022.

The attack came after Russia launched a lot of airstrikes on Ukraine, killing many people and hurting over 160.

Kyiv said that Russia‘s recent missile attacks were the largest so far in the war.

On Friday, Mr. Gladkov wrote on Telegram that he saw people asking for help on social media because they were scared and needed to get to a safe place.

“Sure, we will. We have already helped many families move,” he said.

The governor said people would be brought to the towns of Stary Oskol and Gubkin and could stay there for as long as they need.

However, he said that not everyone could be helped there, so he would ask friends from other places to come and help.

The governor sent out a message telling people that a missile could come and to go home or find a safe place to stay.

Russia keeps saying that Ukraine is responsible for the drone attacks that have been happening recently.

Kyiv doesn’t often admit to doing attacks in other countries, but they have done it before.

The fighting across borders has happened because the US is saying Russia is making the situation worse in Ukraine. They say Russia is using missiles and launchers from North Korea, which is a big problem.

Moscow said they didn’t work together on that.

The US government recently approved a $250 million military aid package for Ukraine.

Negotiations for more money in Congress have stopped because Republicans don’t agree. They want stronger security at the US-Mexico border as part of any military aid deal.

Ukraine says it needs more help from the West or it could lose the war and have money problems.

Window bursts in midair as US plane lands

A plane lost part of its body while flying and had to land in Oregon because of it.

The Alaska Airlines plane had to come back to Portland 35 minutes after it took off for California because a part of the plane, including a window, fell off.

Alaska said 177 people were on the plane and they landed safely.

The airline said it will temporarily stop flying all 65 of its 737 Max 9 planes to check them.

Alaska Airlines’ CEO Ben Minicucci said, “We will only bring back each plane after checking it completely for maintenance and safety. ”

Mr Minicucci said the six crew members did a great job on the flight. The plane was at 16,000ft when it started to descend in an emergency. This information comes from flight tracking data.

Pictures sent to news sources show the nighttime sky through a hole in the aircraft’s body, with insulation and other materials visible.

Other photos show the seat nearest to the part that was broken, an empty window seat leaning forward without its cushion.

“I feel for the people who were on this flight. I am really sorry for what you went through,” Mr.

“I am very thankful for how our pilots and flight attendants have been responsive. ”

The oxygen masks came down when the problem started at 16,000 feet soon after the plane took off.

Based on a photo on social media, the back of the plane, behind the wing and engines, was damaged.

The part of the plane’s body that’s involved seems like it could be an extra emergency exit for some airlines, but not for Alaska.

The US Federal Aviation Agency said the Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 came back to the airport without any problems and everyone is safe. After the team said there was a problem with keeping the air pressure stable,

Boeing knew about the incident and is trying to find out more information.

“A group of Boeing experts is ready to help with the investigation,” it said.

The NTSB is looking into the incident.

The Boeing 737 Max is being watched very closely because of safety problems and investigations.

The Max airplanes were not allowed to fly for a year and a half starting in March 2019 because two of them crashed the same way and people died.

Each Max plane got changed a lot to be able to fly again. But you wouldn’t be able to see the changes from the outside, and passengers wouldn’t notice anything different.

Boeing will now deliver 737 Max planes faster because they fixed a supply problem that made them have to inspect the planes for a long time.

Boeing has given about 1,300 737 Max airplanes to customers.

The FAA told airlines to check the Max airplanes for a loose bolt in the rudder control system.

  • Accountant in hot waters for forging 39 GRA official receipts leading to loss of over GHS2.4m

Accountant in hot waters for forging 39 GRA official receipts leading to loss of over GHS2.4m

The Circuit Court in Accra has remanded Michael Sumnaya Adedina, a 34-year-old accountant with Medeena Consult Limited, into police custody for an unauthorized attempt to collect tax, a violation of Section 75 of the Revenue Administration Act 2016 (Act 915).

The accused is alleged to have forged 39 official payment receipts from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), resulting in a loss of over GHc2.4 million to the state.

He was arraigned on seven counts namely forgery of an official document contrary to section 158 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29), stealing contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29) and fraudulent breach of trust contrary to section 128 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29) and making false or misleading statements contrary to section 74 of the Revenue Administration Act 2016 (Act 915).

The accused pleaded not guilty to all the counts and had been remanded to reappear on January 17, 2024.

His lawyers had prayed the court to admit him to bail on grounds that, he has sureties of independent means to ensure he avails himself to stand trial.

But his request was opposed by the prosecution on grounds that the accused is likely to interfere with investigations.

The Court presided over by Mrs Afua Owusua Appiah struck out two of the counts including Impeding tax administration because they did not support the charges.

    Brief facts:

Per the brief facts of the case as presented to the Court by the prosecutor, DSP Evans Kesse, the complainant in the case is the country manager for BMG Infrastructure Company Limited located at Tarkwa in the Western Region.

He said the company was a foreign-owned company registered with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC established in the aforesaid area in 2021 and it is into mining Waste processing.

According to him, the accused person approached the complainant and introduced himself as a professional accountant, who could prepare all their accounts and represent their interests professionally.

Consequently, the company outsourced the services to the accused person in all matters relating to accounting, including statutory payments and the preparation of various tax types with the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust for its employees.

After each payment, ASP Kesse said, the accused person furnished official receipts to the complainant from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) as proof of payment.

He told the court that, on May 31, 2023, the GRA conducted a tax audit into the activities of BMG Infrastructure Limited and detected a tax liability of GH¢2,495,778.00 against the company, which raised suspicion.

The prosecutor said consequently, the Company launched investigations to find out the cause of that huge liability.

ASP Kesse said during investigations, they gathered that the accused person had over the period failed to pay all the monies he collected from BMG as taxes to GRA.

He said, a report was made to the GRA through GIPC with the corresponding receipts for verification and it was realised that the accused person had been forging the GRA official receipts.

The prosecutor said that following this worrying development, an official complaint was made on December 29, 2023, to the investigation wing of GRA and the accused person was arrested for investigations.

During interrogation and in his caution to the Police, the accused admitted the offence and said, he downloaded the GRA payment receipts from PDF to Word and edited them to insert the tax figures and presented the forged receipts to the complainant as though genuine taxes had been paid.

He disclosed that he used part of the money to buy concessions for mining purposes, which went bad and that he used part of the money to buy a Toyota Hilux pickup at the cost of GH$ 650, 000.00 and a Lexus SUV vehicle at the cost of GHS 550, 000.00.

He further stated that he used some of the proceeds to put up a four-bedroom self-contained house at Tarkwa Aboso.

Further investigation is ongoing to identify these assets for action.

  • OccupyGhana planning to explore legal avenues to compel Appiah-Kubi in revealing businessman who tried to bribe MPs

OccupyGhana planning to explore legal avenues to compel Appiah-Kubi in revealing businessman who tried to bribe MPs

Civil Society Organisation, OccupyGhana, is contemplating the utilization of constitutional provisions to insist that Asante-Akim North MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi, discloses the identity of the businessman accused of attempting bribery within the majority caucus.

This development comes in the wake of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) declaring its incapacity to investigate the reported incident involving a businessman attempting to bribe Majority MPs to discourage them from pursuing the impeachment of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to OccupyGhana, it was awaiting legal advice to confirm if it could demand that the identity of the businessman be made public for the OSP to revive its investigations into the matter.

“But we are not done yet. We have instructed our lawyers to advise whether we and Ghanaians have the constitutional right to information, to the name of the businessman, which the OSP inexplicably redacted from the report.

“If we receive advice that we are entitled to that information, we will commence the relevant proceedings under the Right to Information Act to compel the OSP to reveal the name,” the group said.

This was contained in a press release dated January 5, 2024.

The Civil society, juxtaposing corruption with fungi, said it thrives in darkness and shadow which takes advantage of secrecy.

They add that the only way to eliminate it is to expose it to sunlight, where it can be effectively addressed.

“The corruption fungus abhors and cannot stand sunlight, and we will do all in our civil power to direct the power of light unto this matter. It just might produce the further evidence that the OSP requires to revive the dead,” the release read.

OccupyGhana said it has observed that many of these allegations have been unaddressed. However, this time,  it is determined to get to the roots of the matter.

    Read the full statement below;

OccupyGhana has read with much disappointment, the report of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (‘OSP’) on the above, dated 28 December 2023. The OSP’s investigation was triggered by our 3 November 2022 petition to that office to investigate the alleged, attempted bribery of the majority caucus of Parliament by an unnamed businessman. This was after both Andy Appiah-Kubi, MP and Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, MP, Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, had taken turns to make these allegations.

That is why we find shocking the claim by the otherwise respectable Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, MP that the only bases of his allegations, were rumours and Appiah-Kubi, MP’s allegations. We find it difficult to believe that with all the resources at his disposal, the Majority Leader and Minister would trot out and repeat allegations that he now say he did not verified either beforehand or after-the-fact.

Then there is the reported hostility by Appiah-Kubi, MP towards officers of the OSP and his flat-out refusal to cooperate with the investigation. What is even more shocking is the report that both Appiah-Kubi, MP (the accuser) and the unnamed businessman (the accused) apparently engaged in a ‘rehearsed and well-choreographed… joint and similar denial’ of the attempted bribery event.

The result is that the OSP could not obtain any prosecution-worthy evidence on yet another allegation of corruption involving Parliament, an institution which has been plagued by and dogged with several corruption allegations over the years. Although there have been no charges or prosecutions, the repeated allegations that MPs engage in various acts of corruption is not one that Ghanaians can ignore. Some derisorily, and maybe with some justification, refer to our Parliament as ‘Ghana’s leading transactional centre.’

From time to time, some MPs end up confessing that these shenanigans happen. While examples are legion, there has been one assured result – investigations lead to nothing. For example, in 2014, Alban Bagbin (then MP and now Speaker of the House) was reported to have admitted that ‘there is evidence that some MPs take bribes and come to the floor and try to articulate the views of their sponsors.’ As expected, a reported parliamentary inquiry led to nothing. In 2017, some minority MPs on the Appointments Committee, led by Mahama Ayariga, MP, reported an attempt to bribed them to approve a ministerial nominee. Another reported parliamentary enquiry led to nothing, as expected.

This time, two senior sitting MPs took turns to announce on radio that an unnamed rich businessman attempted to bribe a section of Parliament’s majority caucus. These MPs are considered as heavy-weight leaders in our politics, and the least expected of them are dignity and the courage to stand by their convictions, if they have any. They ought to be good examples for the rest of us and our children. Yet, their behaviour renders them unfit to be leaders. One would have expected them to resign in good conscience, but alas, we are stuck with such mediocrity.

As the OSP indicated in the report, the case is all but dead for lack of serious evidence to prosecute; but these ‘Honourable MPs’ (a phrase that is now generally accepted and understood as an oxymoron) will continue to occupy their seats and offices, and earn their salaries and even ex gratia, not caring about the damage they are causing to this country.

But we are not done yet. We have instructed our lawyers to advise whether we and Ghanaians have the constitutional right to information, to the name of the businessman, which the OSP inexplicably redacted from the report. If we receive advice that we are entitled to that information, we will commence the relevant proceedings under the Right to Information Act to compel the OSP to reveal the name.

Corruption, like fungi, thrives in darkness and shadows, taking advantage of secrecy, self-imposed redactions, unjustified self-censorship and lack of accountability. The corruption fungus abhors and cannot stand sunlight, and we will do all in our civil power to direct the power of light unto this matter. It just might produce further evidence that the OSP requires to revive the dead.

We haven’t forgiven you – Dome-Kwabenya constituents reply Adwoa Safo

Residents of Dome-Kwabenya and its environs have reacted to a claim by the Member of Parliament for the area, Sarah Adwoa Safo, suggesting that they have forgiven her for past mistakes.

Recall that Adwoa Safo for a long period took leave from official duties. She cited “personal reasons” for her absence form her Ministerial role. However, some Members of Parliament claimed she did not inform the house of her absence; a situation that resulted in a bad blood between some members of the Majority in Parliament, including Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu.

She eventually appeared after her long absence to continue with her Parliamentary duties despite being dismissed as the Gender Minister by President Akufo-Addo. Some agitated residents and executives of the New Patriotic Patriotic Party vowed to unseat her, a decision some later said they had rescinded.

Fast forward, in a media engagement during the NPP Parliamentary vetting, Adwoa said her constituents had forgiven her.

The Independent Ghana spoke with some residents to ascertain the views of the residents on the matter.

Contrary to the MP’s claim, some residents said they have not forgiven her.

“We haven’t forgiven her,” a trader at the Dome market, Gifty Quayson said. “Dust is killing us here. We are being driven away by authorities at the market. They always come here for money from us even when we have sold nothing for the day. We pay for tickets. We are really suffering here,” Gifty added.

They lament bad roads, poor living conditions, among others, citing these as reasons for not forgiving the incumbent Member of Parliament.

“Who said we have forgiven her?” a motorcyclist at Dome said.

“Is an apology what is going to make our lives better? She deserted us for so long, then when it got to time to vote, she’s come back, for what? We haven’t forgiven her because our living conditions have not improved,” Nana Poku said.

Some residents on the other hand noted that despite Adwoa Safo’s sins, they have forgiven her.

“Once she’s asked for forgiveness, I have forgiven her. We voted for her to work for us but if due to circumstances beyond her control, she couldn’t do her work, why should I hold any grudge against her?” Kwame Nkrumah, a resident said.

  • Prophecy made by Nostradamus for 2024 “came true within hours of the new year”

Prophecy made by Nostradamus for 2024 “came true within hours of the new year”

Nostradamus predicted something bad would happen in 2024, and it has already come true at the beginning of the year.

Known as the ‘prophet of doom’, a French astrologer from the 16th century predicted things like the Great Fire of London, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and even Bitcoin.

He wrote his ideas about the future in a book called ‘Les Propheties’ in 1555. Some people think he predicted the big earthquake in Japan, even though his writing is not very clear.

The prophet said that the Earth will become very dry and then there will be big floods.

He also said that in 2024 there will be a big shortage of food because of an earthquake.

It is one of the worst disasters ever in the country and some people think it was predicted by Nostradamus.

Another famous psychic, Baba Vanga from Bulgaria, also seems to have foretold the disaster in Japan, where at least 84 people died.

She predicted that the weather would get worse and there would be many disasters during the year. But she wasn’t sure about it.

Vanga became well-known in Europe for predicting the Chernobyl disaster, Princess Diana‘s death, 9/11 in New York, and even her own death on August 11, 1996, at the age of 85, according to her followers.

Many people are searching for survivors of the New Year’s Day earthquake. They want to save as many people as they can before Thursday afternoon.

“We need to keep working hard to save people, even after 72 hours after the disaster,” said Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida at a press conference.

  • Another Putin’s top combat commander killed in an attack – Report

Another Putin’s top combat commander killed in an attack – Report

Russia is not saying anything about the claim that Putin’s top military leader has been killed in an attack.

Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk from Ukraine said his crews did great in a fight with a Russian military post near Sevastopol in Crimea.

The news in the area says that General Valery Gerasimov, who is Vladimir Putin’s top war commander, may have been killed in an attack. It is not confirmed if he was at the command post at the time.

Nataliya Humenyuk, who speaks for the Ukrainian southern defense forces, did not say if Gerasimov had died. She said, “We are gathering the information you want to know. ”

“Once it’s confirmed, it will be shared with the public. ” Right now, all we can say is what we already know – the control point has been reached.

A big boom and lots of smoke were seen on video from a possible attack with a missile called Storm Shadow at a military headquarters in Yukharin Balka.

Another army place in Crimea in the village of Uyutnoye, near Yevpatoria, in Saki district was also said to be attacked.

Ukrainian sources said a lot of ambulances were seen at both places.

Putin’s chosen governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, said: “It was the biggest attack in a long time. ”

Gerasimov was last seen on December 29th giving awards to soldiers who did a good job during the fighting in Marinka, Ukraine. He hasn’t been seen since then.

However, this week is an important Russian holiday, and he has disappeared from public view for long periods before.

Newsweek said that some people are saying that Gerasimov is dead, but it’s not proven. It seems like this started after WarVehicleTracker shared a picture from a Russian Telegram channel called “Ordinary Tsarism. ”

“The message said that Valery Gerasimov was killed in an attack on Crimea while he was at a command post near Sevastopol. ”

There is no proof that the general, who was against Yevgeny Prigozhin, was in Crimea or was injured in the attack there.

Russia has not said anything about the claims yet.

Shortly after the attack, Oleshchuk said, “I thank the Ukrainian Air Force pilots and everyone who planned the operation for their excellent work in combat. ”

He said that Russian propaganda might tell lies about the attacks, and he expects them to do the same on January 4th like they did before.

Hezbollah chief issues “no rules” war warning to Israel over death of Hamas leader

The leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon said that Israel’s killing of Hamas’s deputy leader in Beirut was a very serious and dangerous crime, and they cannot stay quiet about it.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah expressed his sympathy on TV to his friends for what he called a ‘serious attack by Israel’ on Tuesday night that killed Saleh al-Arouri.

He promised that his group would fight without any limits or rules if Israel attacked Lebanon. He also said that anyone who starts a war with them will regret it.

Tuesday’s attack hit the southern part of Dahiyeh. Analysts think it could be a message to the militants that their main area can also be reached.

It was the first attack in Beirut after almost three months of almost daily fighting between Israel and Hezbollah near the border.

The team shot rockets into the border on October 8 to help Hamas, after attacks on southern Israel the day before caused fighting.

Hezbollah was started by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in 1982. It is a part of a group that doesn’t like Israel and the United States, and is supported by Tehran.

It battled with Israel for a whole month in 2006.

Nasrallah said that Hezbollah acted fast on October 8 and the shelling across the border stopped Israel from bombing Lebanon. He also said that Israel’s ability to prevent these attacks had failed.

He talked on Wednesday to remember four years since the US drone killed Quds Force leader Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad.

He said many people were killed in two explosions at a ceremony in Iran to remember Soleimani on purpose.

President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran spoke out against the terrible and cruel attack, and Iran’s top leader Ayatollah Khamenei promised to retaliate for the violent bombings.

Harsh criminals will be punished severely, and there will be a tough response.

Nasrallah gave his third speech since October 7.

In his first speech in early November, he said that stopping the Israeli attacks on Gaza was important to prevent a regional conflict in the United States.

In another speech about a week later, he said that the fight against Israel would continue.

On Wednesday, he said he will talk more about what Hezbollah is doing in the south on Friday.

Putin ceases bombardment of hospitals and schools – Report

Vladimir Putin said he is against the ‘terrorist’ attacks in Iran. But his own forces have been bombing homes, hospitals, and schools in Ukraine for days.

The Russian president said sorry to Iran’s leaders after two bombs exploded in the city of Kerman today.

At least 103 people have been confirmed to have died, and over 200 people were injured in the attacks. Iranian officials have called the attacks terrorism.

The explosions happened near a cemetery where many people were having a ceremony to honor Qassem Soleimani, a top commander who was killed by the U. S A flying robot used in 2020.

Today, the Kremlin issued a statement saying Putin strongly disapproves of terrorism and called the attack on innocent people very cruel and heartless.

He spoke after many Russian attacks on Ukraine that hurt and killed many innocent people.

After the first attack last week, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian ‘terrorists’ used almost all their weapons and targeted a hospital, school, and homes.

At least 39 people have died in Kyiv and other towns and cities in one of the worst attacks of the almost two-year war.

The day after, Ukraine attacked the Russian city of Belgorod with planes, and Russia said it killed 25 innocent people.

Asiedu Nketiah recalls E.T Mensah’s advice that led him to assume NDC General Secretary role

Chairman for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has offered a heartfelt tribute to the late E.T. Mensah, an esteemed stalwart of the party.

Asiedu Nketiah characterized him as a senior and dynamic colleague who left a profound impact on young parliamentarians during his tenure in Parliament.

He observed that the late Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram was held in high regard by nearly all the young MPs from both sides of the House until his passing.

During an interview at the burial grounds of the late ET Mensah (the forecourt of the State House) on Friday, Asiedu Nketiah said the late Council of State member was among the MPs who approached and suggested that he contest to become the NDC’s general secretary after deciding to leave Parliament to pursue a PhD.

He emphasized that he secured the position despite former President Rawlings and other stalwarts of the NDC supporting their respective candidates, attributing his success to the work and support provided by the group of MPs that endorsed him for the position.

“Something he did, which I will never forget, is that he was part of the group of MPs who recommended me to become the NDC general secretary when I was leaving Parliament after twelve years to pursue my PhD. ET Mensah, Doe Adjaho, Alban Bagbin, John Dramani Mahama, and a few others came together and suggested that the party needed a firebrand, and I did not have a pesewa at the time.”

“All the seniors in the party had their candidates, but with the backing of ET Mensah, Doe Adjaho, Collins Dauda, John Mahama, and others who pledged to work in their constituencies to ensure my election, I became the general secretary of the NDC,” Asiedu Nketiah added.

Mr. Mensah died in South Africa at the age of 77 in October 2023 after battling ill health for some time. His body was later brought to Ghana in the same month.

Enoch Teye Mensah (born May 17, 1946) was a Minister for Education and a Member of Parliament in Ghana from January 1997 till January 2017.

He held several portfolios in government. Until his demise, he was a member of the Council of State.

His funeral service was held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra on Friday, January 5, 2024.

The film is considered a very special part of our culture.

Indian naval forces board ship taken over off coast of Somalia

Indian navy soldiers got on a ship that had been taken over by pirates near Somalia, according to officials.

They are searching the ship after telling the pirates to go away, a statement said.

The 15 Indian crew members on the ship are reported to be safe.

They called for help from a UK marine agency and said that “five to six unauthorized armed people” had gotten onto the ship near the Somali port town of Eyl on Thursday evening.

A plane was sent to talk to them, and then a ship called the INS Chennai followed.

The ship, called MV Lila Norfolk, had the flag of Liberia and was going to Bahrain before it was hijacked.

The crew had told the UKMTO that they were hiding in a safe room on the ship to stay safe from pirates or other dangerous situations.

Recent occasional attacks on ships near Somalia’s coast have made people worried that piracy might be coming back in that area.

Pirate attacks were a big problem for ships from 2008-2011. Many countries sent warships to patrol the area to stop the attacks, which often started from Eyl.

Prince Andrew’s claims not being looked into – Met Police

The Metropolitan Police said they are not looking into claims about the Duke of York and his ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein who was involved in child abuse.

Prince Andrew is being accused of touching a woman inappropriately at Epstein’s house in court documents that were made public. He has said before that this is not true.

The Met said it will look at any new and important information if someone tells them about it.

The prince is one of many important people listed in the files.

The new papers are part of a legal case against Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s girlfriend. She has been arrested for helping him hurt girls.

Many of the claims in the papers are not new.

The files have a long story from Johanna Sjoberg. She met Prince Andrew at Epstein’s house in New York in 2001. Also there were Epstein’s friend Maxwell and Virginia Giuffre. She later filed a claim against the prince for a sexual assault, and they agreed on a settlement.

Ms Sjoberg says that Prince Andrew touched her breast during an encounter. Buckingham Palace has said that the allegations are completely false.

British group against king and queen, Republic, said it told the police about the prince after the papers came out this week.

The force knew about the documents getting out, but they haven’t started looking into it yet.

“We will look at any new and important information that is brought to our attention,” a spokesperson said.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he won’t talk about the police or court cases involving Prince Andrew.

Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour party and a former top prosecutor, said that when people make believable accusations, those accusations should be looked into.

“I saw the headlines but not the details. Whoever it is, if there are believable accusations, they should be investigated,” he said on LBC.

The papers mention some famous people like former US presidents Bill Clinton and Donald Trump.

The papers do not have any claims of Mr. Trump doing something wrong, and there is no suggestion that Mr. Clinton did anything illegal.

Epstein, a wealthy man who had connections in the government, business, and royal families, died in jail in 2019. He was accused of running a large group of young girls for sex.

Maxwell went to prison for 20 years in July 2020. She has asked for help, and they will listen to her in November next year.

Prince Andrew said he would stop doing his royal duties in 2019 because of the Epstein scandal.

Hospital fire near Hamburg claims lives of four patients

Four people have died in a fire at a hospital near the city of Hamburg in northern Germany.

The fire started around 10:45 PM local time (9:45 PM GMT) on Thursday on the third floor of the Helios Clinic in Uelzen.

About 20 people got hurt, and the police think more people might die because some injuries are really bad.

Officials are trying to find out why the fire started.

140 firefighters and people who rescue others, including some from nearby areas, worked hard to control the fire. According to reports, some people were saved from the clinic using ladders.

The police said that people inside the building called for help.

Uelzen is about 70 kilometers (43 miles) to the southeast of Hamburg.

All four people who died were patients.

However, the police mentioned that more people might have died. “There are more people who are very badly hurt and might die,” said spokesperson Michel Koenemann.

The fire is believed to have caused about €1m (£862,000) in damage.

The Helios Clinic is a hospital where doctors learn from the Hannover Medical School. The clinic’s website says it has around 750 workers and helps about 42,000 patients each year.

  • ‘Misinformation’ about Israel and Gaza hits McDonald’s

McDonald’s is losing business because people in the Middle East and other places are not buying their food. They think McDonald’s supports Israel.

CEO Chris Kempczinski has admitted in a post on LinkedIn that there was an impact, and he said that the negative reaction was due to incorrect information.

He is the second boss of a big company in the US to talk about how the Israel-Gaza war is affecting businesses.

    Starbucks has also had problems.

“Many markets in the Middle East and some other places are being affected by the war and false information, and it’s hurting businesses like McDonald’s,” Mr. Kempczinski wrote in the message.

“He said this is discouraging and not based on good reasons. ”

“In all the countries we work in, even those with a lot of Muslims, McDonald‘s is proudly run by local owners. ”

McDonald’s has lots of stores all over the world. Many of these stores are run by different people who own their own businesses. About 5 out of every 100 are in the Middle East.

Since Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October, the McDonald’s main office has tried to stay out of the public eye when it comes to the fighting.

But its company is still involved in the conflict.

After the attack, McDonald’s Israel gave free meals to many members of the Israeli military.

The decision to move sparked people in countries that have a lot of Muslims to want to not buy the products. They were angry about Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The owners of the brand in countries where most people are Muslim wanted to make it clear that they were not connected to what was happening.

Mr Kempczinski posted about the growing tension over the boycotts.

The pro-Palestinian group BDS has now asked people to stop buying from McDonald’s, even though they didn’t focus on McDonald’s before.

McDonald’s Malaysia, supported by a company from Saudi Arabia, sued the Malaysia BDS group for $1. 3 million They said the group made untrue and harmful statements that hurt their business.

BDS wants McDonald’s to end its partnership with the franchisee in Israel and Malaysia if it doesn’t give up the lawsuit.

The group said that instead of asking McDonald’s to end its franchise in Israel, McDonald’s Malaysia and its Saudi owner are trying to stop people from showing support for the Palestinian liberation in Malaysia.

“We can’t allow this to happen. ” “Let’s prove to McDonald’s the power of regular people boycotting their products. ”

McDonald’s chose not to say anything about the lawsuit and pointed back to the post.

Mr Kempczinski said that we hate violence and don’t like hate speech. We will always welcome everyone with pride.

Youth vent fury, vandalize Gomoa polyclinic in response to relative’s death

Unidentified individuals, suspected to be from Gomoa Dominase and Potsin, have physically assaulted certain members of staff of the Gomoa Polyclinic.

The occurrence transpired in the early hours of Thursday morning.

As per the medical superintendent of the facility, Dr Jerry Kwaku Vlad Nkegbe, the individuals had brought their relatives to the facility for treatment, but unfortunately, the patient later passed away.

The group surrounded the facility and insisted on obtaining the body of their deceased relative.

Upon being turned down by the nurses on duty for failing to follow due process, the group started attacking the medical officers on duty while destroying properties of the facility.

Dr. Jerry Kwaku Vlad Nkegbe said in an interview that some of the attackers were arrested and also enumerated some of the equipment that were destroyed by the angry youth.

“The police have arrested some of them and the police have promised to follow up on arresting the other assailants who committed that dastardly act.

“They damaged the computer that is at the OPD that we use to register patients. They damaged plastic chairs, they damaged a BP apparatus, they damaged spirits, and other commodities that we use. They also entered the lab and destroyed things and we are still compiling the comprehensive list and the DCE has asked us to submit it to him to see how best they can reimburse the facility so that service to God and country can be continued.”

  • Over 1.6 million Tesla vehicles recalled in China

Over 1.6 million Tesla vehicles recalled in China

Tesla is bringing back over 1. 6 million cars in China because of problems with the steering software and door locks, says the country’s regulator.

The recall involves the S, X, 3, and Y models, as well as 7,538 imported vehicles.

The issues will be resolved by sending updates to the software from a distance, so the vehicles won’t have to go to the dealer or auto repair shop.

Less than a month ago, Tesla had to bring back two million cars in the US because of problems with the autopilot software.

Last year in May, the Chinese government said that over a million cars might have problems with their speed and braking systems.

The American electric car company found issues with the features that help the car drive by itself and the system that locks the doors.

The Chinese government agency, SAMR, said that the planned vehicle update is like a recall, even though it will happen through the internet.

Tesla will send a software update to 1,610,105 vehicles. These include Models S and X that were imported, as well as Models 3 and Y made in China from 2014 to 2023. It was announced by the SAMR.

The official said that this was to fix problems with the self-driving feature and reduce the chance of accidents.

“The SAMR said that for cars included in this recall, if the automatic steering assistance is turned on, drivers might not use the level two combined assistance properly. This could make the car more likely to crash and be unsafe. ”

Additionally, Tesla will update the software for 7,538 Models S and X cars to fix the issue of doors unlocking in crashes.

This is the second bad news for Tesla in the country. China’s BYD sold more electric cars than Tesla worldwide in the last quarter of 2023.

In 2022, Tesla had to bring back around 128,000 cars in China because of a problem with the rear motor inverter.

Tesla sells a lot of cars in China, where the government gives them money to people who buy electric and hybrid cars. The country wants most cars to run on clean energy by 2035.

China has a big factory in Shanghai where Tesla makes cars. It’s the first “gigafactory” Tesla has made outside of the US. The facility sent out 947,000 vehicles in 2023, as reported by state news agency Xinhua.

Adam Bonaa cautions gov’t against involving military in 2024 elections

Security analyst Adam Bonaa has emphasized that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) should refrain from intervening in elections unless officially summoned.

This statement from Adam Bonaa follows Ghana’s Presidency refuting claims circulating in the public domain regarding politically motivated alterations within the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The comment comes after the Communication Director at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, issued a statement refuting allegations. Arhin clarified that the publication suggested a meeting occurred at the Presidency on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, to deliberate on the purported politically motivated changes within the Ghana Armed Forces.

According to him, the meeting held with the Heads of Security agencies at Jubilee House on 2nd January 2024 is an annual feature on the President’s calendar at the beginning of the New Year.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, the security analyst expressed worry on the use of the military during the just-ended District Level Elections.

“We need to keep our military away from the frontline when it comes to elections in this country. I am happy the security heads met recently in putting together some guidelines on the elections.

“The military should always be on standby and not be following DCE’s and MCE’s and members of Parliament around and terrorizing citizens, that is not the work of the military. That is what gives some of us cause for concerns.

“What happened in 2020 were citizens died, some military were used here and there. In the District Assembly Elections some DCEs and MCEs and MP’s few of them used military men to intimidate citizens. District Assembly Elections that a lot of Ghanaians don’t go out to vote they used them.

Mr. Bonaa stated that there will be confrontations if the government attempts to use the military in the upcoming 2024 elections.

  • Prominent bank in China goes bankruptcy

Prominent bank in China goes bankruptcy

A big Chinese financial company has asked for legal protection because it can’t pay the money it owes.

A court in Beijing agreed to the request from Zhongzhi Enterprise Group, which has given lots of money to real estate companies.

Chinese officials started looking into “suspected illegal activities” by the company in November.

It was reported that ZEG declared it couldn’t pay its debts.

The group that is having a hard time told investors in a letter in November that it owes more money – up to $64 billion – than it actually has, which is about $38 billion.

On Friday, a court in Beijing wrote on the social media app WeChat that ZEG doesn’t have enough money to pay all its debts, and can’t pay them back completely.

ZEG is a big company in China that works in the shadow banking industry. Shadow banking is a system of lenders and brokers who are not part of the regular banking system.

Shadow banking is not regulated and doesn’t have the same rules and limitations as regular banks.

Informal lending has always been a part of China’s economy, but shadow banking started to become more popular after the 2008 global financial crisis when credit was hard to come by.

China’s unofficial banking industry is worth about $3 trillion. It often gives money to the country’s property market to help it survive. The industry that used to do really well is now in trouble because it doesn’t have enough money. Some of the biggest companies might not be able to stay in business.

At its best, ZEG’s asset management arm managed over a trillion yuan ($139 billion; £110 billion).

However, it was not protected from the bigger problem with property, and it had more problems in November when authorities said they had taken legal actions against “many suspects. ”

We still don’t know who they are and what they do in the company. The person who started the company, Xie Zhikun, passed away from a heart attack in 2021.

The latest news at ZEG has made people worried about more problems in the world’s second biggest economy. This comes after the company Evergrande failed and Country Garden had money troubles.

Troubled property developers owe Chinese banks a lot of money, about 30% of the banks’ assets.

China’s real estate industry contributes to one third of its economy. This includes homes, renting and helping people find a place to live, and making building supplies and things that are used in apartments.

  • Unpaid tier-2 contributions spark strike threat from University Senior Staff

Unpaid tier-2 contributions spark strike threat from University Senior Staff

The Senior Staff Association—Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) has issued a stern ultimatum, urging the government to expedite the clearance of Tier-2 contributions for its members. Failure to address this matter promptly may result in an impending industrial action by its members, slated to commence on January 15, 2024.

The association has highlighted that the outstanding payments, subject to concern, have been accruing since February 2023.

During the Senior Staff Association—Universities of Ghana’s (SSA-UoG) NEC meeting convened at CKT-UTAS in Navrongo, revelations surfaced that the government, despite an initial agreement, has neglected to fulfill the payment of contributions.

“Historically, Government on several occasions has failed to pay contributions on time to the Board of Trustees for effective management. It will be recalled that between 2010 and 2016, Government deliberately refused to pay members’ Tier-2 contributions. When leadership of SSA-UoG requested that the Government pays the three percent penalty (in accordance with the Pensions Act) on the amount which could have given us over Two Hundred Million Ghana Cedis, they refused and instead used simple interest rates to calculate which gave us Fifty-One million Ghana Cedis.”

SSA-UoG in a statement demanded that the government to “as a matter of urgency pay all outstanding debt/contributions together with the appropriate interest from February to December 2023 using the three percent penalty rates as stipulated by the Pension’s Act, Act 766, section 64.”

    Below is the full statement.

At its 17th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on 25th November 2023 at CKT-UTAS in Navrongo, it came to the attention of NEC that since February 2023 to date, Government has refused to pay the Tier-2 Pension contributions of members of the Senior Staff Association of Public Universities of Ghana to the Board of Trustees to manage the funds.

NEC received this news with utter shock and disappointment and quickly wrote to Government for the immediate release of the funds, but Government has refused to pay. This is very unfortunate!

Historically, Government on several occasions has failed to pay contributions on time to the Board of Trustees for effective management. It will be recalled that between 2010 and 2016, Government deliberately refused to pay members’ Tier-2 contributions. When leadership of SSA-UoG requested that the Government pays the three percent penalty (in accordance with the Pensions Act) on the amount which could have given us over Two Hundred Million Ghana Cedis, they refused and instead used simple interest rates to calculate which gave us Fifty-One million Ghana Cedis.

Recognizing the significant financial detriment suffered by members as a result of the government’s non-compliance with the Pensions Law (Act 766 Section 64), the labour unions formally rejected the proposed simple interest rate and requested the mandated three percent penalty interest, as stipulated by the act and binding on all employers in Ghana. The government’s subsequent refusal to apply the required interest rate has necessitated the intervention of the National Labour Commission (NLC), where the matter is currently under consideration.

Years of dedicated service have come to naught for our 2020 to 2023 retirees, who have been denied their rightful lump sums and left to face abject poverty and illness in their twilight years.

Their selfless contributions to Ghana deserve better.

The government’s blatant disregard for the welfare of University Senior Staff and their pensioners is undeniable.

University senior staff were dealt a blow when the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) abruptly directed university management to cut off overtime allowance for weekend and holiday work. This unilateral alteration of our established Conditions of Service creates significant uncertainty and hardship for dedicated staff.

We urge our university management to resist these directive letters from FWSC and GTEC, as they contravene the Labour Act and our agreed-upon Conditions of Service.

On June 30, 2023, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) communicated to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) their determination that senior staff in public universities are entitled to overtime allowance, as per their conditions of service. However, on November 7, 2023, the FWSC issued a contradictory directive, stating that senior staff should not receive overtime. Disregarding both the Labour Act and the established conditions of service, GTEC subsequently instructed public universities to implement the latter directive.

Why is the FWSC making contradictory statements?

    The SSA-UoG therefore wishes to state as follows;

    1. Government as a matter of urgency pay all outstanding debt/contributions together with the appropriate interest from February to December 2023 using the three percent penalty rates as stipulated by the Pension’s Act, Act 766 section 64.

    2. The government must urgently prioritize the recalculation of accrued interest on Tier- 2 pensions for 2010-2016, as agreed upon in the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed on July 25, 2022 and in accordance with the Pensions Act. This issue requires immediate attention to ensure its resolution.

    3. All outstanding arrears must be paid to our retirees without delay.

    4. We demand the immediate withdrawal of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) letters dated November 7 and 20, 2023, respectively, which illegally eliminate overtime allowance for senior staff.

Upholding the existing Collective Agreement between labour and government is paramount.

Should the government and its relevant agencies, namely the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, Ghana Pensions Regulatory Authority, Ministry of Finance, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, fail to address the concerns outlined in this press release by Monday, January 15th, 2024, the Union will be forced to withdraw our services across all university campuses.

Government threatens action against illegal miners destroying road projects in Osino

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has initiated actions to eradicate illegal miners encroaching upon sections of the project sites for the bypasses along the Kumasi-Accra Highway

As concerns rise over the impact on the construction progress, the government has vowed to take firm measures to reclaim control and ensure the integrity of the ongoing infrastructure development.

Contractors working on the Osino and Anyinam bypasses find themselves confronted with a formidable challenge as illegal miners have encroached upon the designated right of way for these vital construction projects. The encroachment raises concerns about the potential impact on progress and underscores the need for swift and decisive measures to address the situation.

At the Konongo project site of the bypass, contractors are also dealing with swampy areas as they continue with site-clearing activities.

“Swampy sections are very soft with a lot of water, and you cannot pass a road on it. You have to remove it, and then when you reach a reasonable level of firm ground, you put in your boulders to make sure the underground water does not affect your road. So, if you do not have the equipment to deal with it, it is really difficult to work within such sections.”

Eight local contractors are currently engaged in constructing the four bypasses covering over 45 kilometers specifically on the Konongo, Enyiresi, Anyinam, and Osino sections of the Kumasi-Accra highway.

The completion of the bypasses is expected to reduce travel time, vehicular traffic, and road crashes on the highway.

Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, expressed satisfaction during his inspection of ongoing works and pledged the government’s commitment to addressing challenges by providing financial resources for the project.

The Minister bemoaned the activities of illegal miners and expressed the government’s commitment to fight the menace and also make funding available to ensure the completion of the project.

“A lot of the sections that had been worked on already are so much deteriorated by galamsey activities. At one of the stretches at the Osino bypass, the contractors continue to encounter galamseyers, but we have a way of dealing with them.

“I want to assure the contractors that the government stands solidly behind them, and as much as possible, we will continue to make resources available to them because this is a mega project being carried out by the government, and I believe that it will not stall.”

Paramore: Rock band withdraws from LA festival headline spot

The rock band Paramore decided not to perform as the main act at an upcoming festival in Los Angeles.

The band posted on Instagram that they couldn’t play at the iHeartRadio ALTer Ego festival on 13 January because of some unexpected issues.

One week later, the three of them deleted all their posts and pictures from their social media accounts in December.

All information from their website has been taken down.

Lead singer Hayley Williams, guitar player Taylor York and drummer Zac Farro were supposed to perform with other bands like The 1975, The Black Keys, Thirty Seconds To Mars and Yellowcard.

The people in charge of the festival said that Fall Out Boy will perform instead of Paramore at the concert.
    ‘Level of unsureness’

In December, the band told Uproxx that they were unsure about what would happen next because they had finished everything they needed to do for their record label and were now free to make their own decisions.

But Williams told fans not to worry, the band is not breaking up. He said, “The most important thing is that we will still be together as friends. ”

Fans guessing if the band broke up.

On X, previously known as Twitter, a fan asked, “What will happen if the Paramore Spotify page stops working and all the songs are gone. ” Another fan said they were “really scared” that the band might be breaking up.

However, some people have said they don’t think the band is going to break up. “Is anyone else not concerned about Paramore right now. There are many reasons why they might need to miss that show. ” One X user asked if we can try not to go straight to code red this time.

Another person said that it’s normal for artists to delete their social media posts before starting a new phase. They also said that Paramore might come back with new photos of the band and maybe a new logo in a week or two.

The band might have pulled out of the ALTer Ego festival because they got booked to play at a bigger festival with a special contract later in the year.

The band from the US started in 2004. They are most famous for songs like Misery Business, Ignorance, and The Only Exception.

They put out their sixth album called This is Why in February 2023 after not releasing music for four years.

When talking about the band’s break, Williams told BBC Radio 1 that taking time off helped her and the band to think about things and see them in a new way.

“We really needed to find out who we are as individuals, separate from Paramore and all the attention we get in our lives,” she said.

The album was inspired by things that really happened and got great reviews. NME gave it five stars and said it brought out a new and nice feeling.

In August, the band had to cancel the last two shows of their tour because Williams got sick with a lung infection.

North Korean missiles allegedly being used by Russia in Ukraine

The US says that Russia used North Korea’s ballistic missiles and launchers in its war with Ukraine.

John Kirby, who works for the National Security Council, said that Pyongyang’s support for Russia is a big problem and it worries them.

He said that the US would talk about this at the UN Security Council and put more penalties on people who are helping to move weapons.

Moscow said they did not work together in any way.

Hours after the White House accused North Korea, Kim Jong Un said he wants to make more missile launch vehicles in the country.

The leader of North Korea went to Russia in September to talk about working together on military stuff.

The US has accused Pyongyang of giving Russia weapons before, but now they are sharing information about ballistic missiles, which are rockets that can fly by themselves and go up to 900km (500 miles) to hit a target.

During a meeting at the White House, Mr. Kirby said that Russia buying ballistic missiles from North Korea breaks many UN Security Council rules.

“He said we will make sure Russia is held responsible for breaking its promises to other countries again. ”

He also said that the US thinks Russia might buy short-range missiles from Iran, but they haven’t done it yet.

The UK said it really disapproves of Russia using ballistic missiles from North Korea in Ukraine.

“North Korea is facing strong punishments, and we will keep working with other countries to make sure North Korea faces consequences for helping Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine,” said a spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Mr Kirby asked the US Congress to quickly approve more money for Ukraine.

“He said the best way to stop Russia from hurting Ukraine is to give Ukraine important tools for defending themselves, like air defense and other military equipment. ”

Iran and North Korea are supporting Russia. Ukrainian people should know that the American government and its people will always support them.

The White House approved a $250 million aid package for Ukraine on December 27th.

Negotiations for more money in Congress are stuck because Republicans want stricter border security to be included in the aid deal.

Ukraine said that if they don’t get more help from the West soon, it will be hard for them to keep fighting in the war and manage their money.

  • Anyidoho dares Mahama, Mosquito to dismiss Kwetey over decadence in NDC comment

Anyidoho dares Mahama, Mosquito to dismiss Kwetey over decadence in NDC comment

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has asserted vindication for his stance on the party’s moral decline under the present leadership.

Pointing to a recent acknowledgment by NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey that the party needed internal reforms, Samuel Koku Anyidoho implied that his alleged dismissal from the party was a consequence of advocating for similar changes.

He issued a challenge to the current chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the party’s leader, John Dramani Mahama, urging them to undertake similar actions against Kwetey. Anyidoho pointed out that Asiedu Nketiah, in his previous role as the party scribe, supervised the proceedings that resulted in Anyidoho’s expulsion for anti-party conduct.

“Let the Chairman and the Leader of the NDC dare come out and sack the General Secretary if they have the “balls” to do so,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

His post was accompanied by Kwetey’s speech at the commemorative anniversary of the 31st December Revolution that marked the second coming into office of former president Jerry John Rawlings as a military leader in 1981.

“There is real decay and that decay continues to be in the NDC today. So, I don’t want us the NDC to pretend that 31st is simply a day to bash NPP, (the) NPP is not the issue, the issue is bigger than NPP.

“The decay even within the NPP must stop with that blazing fire and that is what this business is about,” Kwetey submitted.

He stressed that unless the NDC rids itself of the internal decay, the 2024 victory will be meaningless.

“It is in vain if we win power only to continue what we see, only to do some of the things that we are seeing and only to claim we are doing less, that is not enough,” he cautioned.

  • Israeli minister describes post-conflict preparations for Gaza

Israeli minister describes post-conflict preparations for Gaza

Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has given ideas for how Gaza should be run after the war between Israel and Hamas ends.

He said that Palestinians would have some control over the area, but it would be limited.

Hamas will not be in charge of Gaza anymore, and Israel will have the main control of security.

The fighting in Gaza kept going as the plan was released. Dozens of people were killed in the past day, according to the health ministry run by Hamas.

The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is coming back to the area this week. He will have discussions with Palestinian officials in the West Bank and leaders in Israel.

He is visiting at a time when there is a lot of tension in the area because a top Hamas leader was killed in Beirut. Many people believe that Israel is responsible for his death. Israel has not said if they were involved or not.

Under Gallant’s plan, Israel would have the main control of security in Gaza.

A group from many different countries would help rebuild the area after it was damaged by Israeli bombing.

Egypt, which is next to the country, would also have a role in the plan, but it is not clear what that role will be.

However, the paper also says that Palestinians would have to take care of the area.

“Mr Gallant said that the people in Gaza are Palestinian, so Palestinian authorities will be in charge. But they must not do anything unfriendly or threatening to Israel. ”

The plan was not talked about much in the meeting with the government officials, and the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not said anything about it. The meeting ended in a fight with some ministers getting mad about the names suggested for an investigation into the 7 October attack by Hamas.

There is a lot of disagreement in Israel about what will happen in Gaza after the current situation.

Some conservative members of Mr. Netanyahu’s government want Palestinian citizens to leave Gaza and for Jewish settlements to be rebuilt there. Other countries in the area and some of Israel’s allies think these ideas are extreme and impossible to make happen.

Mr Gallant has some ideas that may be easier to do than others in the government. But the Palestinian leaders will probably not agree with his ideas. They think the people in Gaza should be in charge of their own territory after the war ends.

Mr Netanyahu has not said in public how he thinks Gaza should be ruled.

He thinks the fighting in Gaza could continue for a few more months, with the goal of totally defeating Hamas.

MrGallant explained how the Israeli military plans to continue the war in Gaza.

He said the Israeli army will focus on specific areas in the north of the Gaza Strip and conduct operations like raids, destroying tunnels, and using air and ground attacks.

The Israeli military in the south will keep looking for Hamas leaders and trying to rescue Israeli hostages.

On Thursday, the Israeli military said it attacked parts of Gaza in the north and south, including Gaza City and Khan Younis.

It attacked terrorist buildings and killed people it called militants who tried to set off a bomb near soldiers.

It also said it had killed a high-ranking member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Mamdouh Lolo, in a bombing.

The health department in Gaza, run by Hamas, reported that 125 people died in the last day in the area.

An official from the health department said that 14 people, including nine children, were killed by Israeli air attacks in al-Mawasi, to the west of Khan Younis.

The small town is a “safe space” for Palestinians who have been forced to leave their homes, protected by Israeli forces. The IDF has not said anything about what Hamas has claimed.

“We were asleep when a strike hit the camp where people were sleeping in tents. Most of them were children,” said Jamal Hamad Salah to the news agency Reuters. “We found a body that was thrown 40 meters away from the scene. ”

“Save the Children’s country director for the occupied Palestinian territory, Jason Lee, says that Gaza is not a safe place. ” Places like camps, shelters, schools, hospitals, homes, and places where people should be safe should not be places where there is fighting.

More than 22,400 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel started attacking. This is almost 1% of the 2. 3 million people who live there. Hamas runs the health ministry and provided this information.

Israel started attacking after Hamas gunmen surprised and attacked southern Israel on October 7th. They killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took about 240 people as hostages.

  • NPP Primaries: Deputy Trade Minister cleared to contest New Juaben South unopposed

NPP Primaries: Deputy Trade Minister cleared to contest New Juaben South unopposed

The Eastern Regional Vetting Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken a decisive stance by disqualifying two aspirants.

Madam Yaa Ansah, who aimed to challenge Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and MP for New Juaben South, and Frank Aidoo, the Municipal Chief Executive of Akuapem South, have been disqualified from the party’s electoral process. This decision sets the stage for a dynamic political landscape as the party moves forward in its candidate selection for the upcoming elections.

Yaa Ansah, who was outside the country’s jurisdiction on January 3,2024, when she was slated to meet the committee, arrived significantly behind schedule.

Nevertheless, she was granted a hearing on January 4, 2024, for the vetting process. Following a petition submitted to the committee by a complainant, Madam Yaa Ansah faced disqualification over allegations of impersonation.

Yaa Ansah’s disqualification now means Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi will contest the New Juaben South Constituency seat unopposed.

On the other hand, the Municipal Chief Executive of Akuapem South, Frank Aidoo, was disqualified for not stepping down from his position as the MCE before filing his forms to contest the Akuapem South seat, where the sitting MP OB Amoah is also seeking another term in office.

The Eastern Regional NPP Secretary, Tony Osei Adjei, explained that Madam Yaa Ansah was disqualified for impersonation.

“Some members said their names had been used and top-printed on Madam Yaa Ansah’s forms, which they did not authorize. The committee was petitioned, and we called the petitioner, and he agreed that he wrote the petition. We asked Yaa Ansah, who said the petitioner consented to using his name, which the petitioner insisted he didn’t. So, there was an issue of impersonation, and we had to hold on to her vetting and refer the matter to the national level for redress.

“As it stands now, she has been disqualified by the vetting committee. So, unless there is an appeal or whatever, if she pulls through successfully, the MP [Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi] will go unopposed.”
