  • 70% of hydrocarbon deposits in northern belt located in Savannah Region – Minister

70% of the hydrocarbon reserves in the northern belt for crude oil development are in the Savannah Region.

Presently, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) is looking at ways to use the hydrocarbon reserves in the area to produce petroleum.

The region also boasts significant gold deposits, particularly on its western side, as well as granite, enormous clinker deposits for cement manufacture in Buipe, and 100,000 hectares of fertile ground for farming. Therefore, the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) would foster an atmosphere that is favorable to investors and assist them in acquiring land for investments.

Mr Muhazu Saeed Jibril, the Savannah Regional Minister, made this known during a media encounter in Accra on Sunday dubbed: The Minister’s Press Briefing on the State of the Regional Reports”.

The Minister said the RCC would explore the manufacturing, mining, agricultural and tourism potentials of the Region through public-private partnerships to accelerate the growth of the local economy for job creation and eradicate poverty.

He highlighted key agricultural, health, road and educational infrastructure as well as the Government’s flagship policies and programmes being implemented in the Region.

In all, 80 educational infrastructure projects including classroom blocks and dormitories were ongoing, 37 health projects such as hospitals under Agenda 111, community-based health posts and clinics were under construction and three warehouses for food storage as well as 1,424,526 improved seedlings were distributed to 18,349 farmers in the Region.

Damongo, Salaga and Daboya town roads were also being asphalted while the Ghana Highways Authority and the Feeder Roads Department had been undertaking routine maintenance of urban and feeder roads across the Region.

“We’re putting so much resources and expertise in place to ensure that the Savannah Region is calm and peaceful because that is the only way we would be appealing enough and can attract investors,” Mr Jibri opined.

“No investor would be attracted to a situation of conflict, violence and insecurity. By extension, no development takes place in a situation of insecurity,” the Minister added.

In that regard, Mr Jibril said the Regional Security Council (RESEC) had been engaging with its counterparts in the Northern Region to resolve land boundary disputes between traditional authorities following the creation of the Region in 2019.

The Minister for instance, mentioned some land and boundary litigations between some traditional authorities; which result in occasional tribal clashes such as Nanton Naa in Nanton District in the Northern Region and Kikpandi Wura in the North East Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

The Wasipewura in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region and Tolon Naa in the Tolon district of the Northern Region.

“I’m convinced that with peace and unity, the Savannah Region will become a beacon of development for the nation,” Mr Jibril emphasised.

  • BoG, EMT, Cabinet, banks, forex bureaus to hold talks over Cedi decline – Minister

The Governor of the Central Bank and Economic Management will meet with currency bureau operators on October 25 to discuss the depreciation of the Cedi, according to Information Minister Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah.

The value of the local currency has been steadily declining, trading at around 15 Ghana cedis to the dollar.
The currency has surpassed the Sri Lanka Rupee to become the worst-performing currency in the world when compared to the US Dollar, according to Bloomberg.

The meeting, according to a Citi News report, aims to ensure that overpricing on the FX market is stopped as well as concerns over supply to stability.

“The Bank of Ghana will be meeting the Managing Director of some of the Banks and the heads of the forex bureau association to hold discussions aimed at ensuring that the supply of forex on the market is stabilized and the overpricing is halted so that, those who need forex for business get it without hindrances at the banking halls as against rates on the black market or some other quarters,” the Information Minister said.

He added that the Cabinet along with the Economic Management Team will hold similar engagements over the persistent decline of the currency which has impacted businesses and economic activity.

“We will also be looking at long-lasting measures to ensure that forex rate is stabilized in the country, even as we expect a lot more inflow of forex following the completion of the syndication of the COCOBOD transaction loan.

“The Economic Management Team is also meeting to appraise itself on some of the recommendations as we get closer to the end of the year. On Thursday, Cabinet itself will be meeting to receive what has gone through the EMT and updates from the IMF negotiation so that some decisions will be made and then update the country on the next step forward,” Oppong-Nkrumah explained.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund has said Ghana must show proof that its debt levels are sustainable before it can approve an economic support programme for the country.

According to Director of the IMF Africa Department, Abebe Aemro Selassie, Ghana needs to also present an economic reform plan before an agreement can be reached.

Ghana is targeting $3 billion from the IMF once an agreement can be reached with the financial support expected to address the country’s macro-economic stability and among others.

  • Raw exports cause of Cedi depreciation – Citizen Ato Dadzie

Ghana cannot stable the cedi versus major trading currencies, according to Citizen Ato Dadzie, general secretary of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), given all that the nation exports.

The Cedi keeps losing value in comparison to other currencies, and attempts to stabilize it have not been successful.

“The truth is that every time Ghana imports, a substantial amount of goods are transported into the nation in containers, yet the majority of these containers ultimately depart Ghana’s borders empty.
The fundamental scientific reality is that air fills an empty container “Exclusive statement to Accra-based Original TV from citizen Ato Dadzie.

“I guess a lot of analysts and every government knows that this is the way to go, this is not something that is new. It is something that we have been talking about since independence that they should add value to our cocoa, that they should add value to our gold. But what has happened currently is that we have not adhered to such a directive. If we keep going on like this, it will be as if we do not know what we want as a country.”

He explained that Ghana in its current state needs “a government who will come in and say this is the prescribed way to go and I am going to do it irrespective of the consequences that might confront me as a government. I’m going to do this to safeguard the future of this country…that is the point we have been talking about. If that is done, I think this country will not be the way it is at the moment.”

He further stressed that the lack of industries to process many of the raw materials produced by farmers is worth looking at.

“Ghana, therefore, needs to increase her exports of value-added resources so as to earn enough foreign exchange to take care of the difference and shortage within the economy,” he said

He holds the view that” the best indicator for measuring the performance of government should be the percentage of export of the country.”

“Ghana’s Cedi Depreciation headache is that we import everything from toothpick, to sponge. Ghanaians are so much interested in buying and selling instead of producing or manufacturing.”

Today one dollar is exchanged for GHS15 On a daily basis the Ghana Cedi continues to depreciate making it difficult for businesses, importers, and governments to transact international business without losing.

  • Jesurun Rak-Sakyi’s lone strike earns Charlton Athletic third straight victory in EFL League One

English-born Ghanaian forward Jesurun Rak-Sakyi played an instrumental in role for his side Charlton Athletic as they sealed their third consecutive victory in the EFL League One on Saturday.

The 20-year-old, who is on loan from Crystal Palace scored the game’s only goal to help the Addicks beat Shrewsbury 1-0.

Rak-Sakyi was substituted in the 88th minute. He has played 12 games, scored three goals and assisted two in the league this season.

The hosts missed their first chance of the game. Skipper Jayden Stockley was well situated to clear the ball from just in front of the goal line after a deep Shrewsbury corner was headed back into the danger zone.

In the opening exchanges, Salop threatened from a number of different set-piece scenarios, but the Addicks came near on 17 minutes.

In the 55th minute, Shrewsbury created a fantastic opportunity to grab the lead. Jordan Shipley, the full-back, volleyed the ball across the face of the goal, but his perfect cross escaped everyone in the middle.

Jack Payne, who entered the game in the 62nd minute, advanced to the byline, and his cut-back was then buried by Rak-Sakyi.

The result made it three wins on the spin for Charlton Athletic as they climbed to seventh in the League One table, two points off the top six.

  • Cardi B and Madonna make peace after rapper slammed singer over “WAP” (UPDATE)

UPDATED 10/23, 9:20 p.m. ET: According to Jason Lee, he brokered the mending of fences between Cardi B and Madonna.

“On the phone with Madonna and Cardi. Listening to both women share their perspective on the communication going on has broadened their love for each other,” he wrote.

Cardi appeared to confirm Lee’s claim via a tweet.

UPDATED 10/23, 6:00 p.m. ET: It seems as though Cardi and Madonna have patched things up.

“I love you,” Madonna tweeted at Cardi.

    “Love you,” Cardi tweeted back.

    See original story below.

Madonna’s recent comment about paving the way for other women in music isn’t sitting right with one artist.

Cardi B took to Twitter to respond to Madonna, after the 64-year-old singer named Cardi in her Instagram Story while discussing her coffee table book, S.E.X. The once-controversial book was released 30 years ago this week.

“30 years ago I published a book called S.E.X. In addition to photos of me naked there were photos of Men kissing Men, Woman kissing Woman, and Me kissing everyone. I also wrote about my sexual fantasies and shared my point of view about sexuality in an ironic way,” she wrote on Saturday.

“I spent the next few years being interviewed by narrow-minded people who tried to shame me for empowering myself as a Woman,” she continued on IG. “I was called a whore, a witch, a heretic, and the devil.”

“Now Cardi B can sing about her WAP. Kim Kardashian can grace the cover of any magazine with her naked ass and Miley Cyrus can come in like a wrecking ball,” Madonna added. “You’re welcome bitches,” she concluded, alongside a clown emoji.

That clown emoji and use of the word ‘bitch’ is what Cardi took offense to. She addressed Madonna’s comment on Twitter, writing, “I literally [paid] this woman homage so many times cause I grew up listening to her …she can make her point without putting clown emojis and getting slick out the mouth ..These icons really become disappointments once u make it in the industry that’s why I keep to myself.” Cardi also posted a screenshot of her sharing just how impactful Madonna’s music was for her.

  • ‘Bad road causing our cocoa, foodstuffs to rot’ – Farmers lament

The poor condition of the roads connecting the town of Mmofra with the closest market center is wasting the farmers’ investments in this cocoa-growing village in the Amenfi West District of the Western Region.

According to Mr. Joseph Owusu, a prominent figure and cocoa farmer, the circumstances had made it impossible for farmers to get their cocoa and other farm products to Mumuni Camp, the closest market center.

Because of the poor condition of the road, he claimed, “the cocoa buying businesses have ceased coming to the neighborhood to acquire our cocoa.”

“Though the community is one of the highest producers of cocoa in the region, produce buyers hardly purchase our cocoa because they cannot come here.”

Mr Owusu said traders, especially foodstuff dealers, who managed to go to the town with hired cargo trucks took advantage of the farmers inability to convey their produce to the market and offerred prices below the realistic market value.

He said they had no choice but to agree to those prices to prevent their produce from getting rotten and incurring huge financial losses.

Mr Owusu said the situation had adversely affected their socio-economic lives, with parents and guardians finding it difficult to finance their children and wards education.

Elizabeth Acheamotah, a cocoa famer, said the road was so bad that only tractors, motorbikes and tricycles could ply it,” adding: “The road has been in that state for more than eleven years.”

She said the fares charged by the tricycle, popularly called ‘Aboboyaa’ were based on the number of hours spent on the road, which also affected their health due to its bumpy nature.

“It takes about three to four hours to cover the distance, though it should have been shorter time than that if the road were in good shape,” she added.

Some residents who spoke to the GNA pleaded with the government through the District Assembly and the Regional Coordinating Council to facilitate rehabilitation of the roads to save them from their predicament.

At least six other individuals who tested positive with monkeypox have passed away, including two each in Chicago, New York, Nevada, and Maryland.

According to state sources, a total of nine deaths have been recorded, with the CDC recording six of those deaths up until Friday.
State organizations revealed the six additional deaths on Thursday and Friday.

    Nationally there are 27,884 cases.

The Chicago Department of Public Health announced two deaths Friday, and both who had multiple other health conditions including weakened immune systems.

Both people were described as adults who had been hospitalized for more than six weeks after being diagnosed with the virus. “Our hearts go out to these individuals’ families and friends,” said CDPH Commissioner Allison Arwady.

“Though the number of new MPV cases has declined substantially since summer, this is a stark reminder that MPV is dangerous and can cause serious illness, and in very rare cases, even death.”

The Chicago announcement came as the Maryland Department of Health said in a statement that a person who died was immunocompromised but that the monkeypox was a “contributing factor” in their death.

“Human monkeypox is still circulating and can cause severe illness and death,” said Dr. Jinlene Chan, the state’s deputy secretary for public health services.

“If you are eligible, such as being immunocompromised or at-risk, the best way to protect yourself against serious illness from MPX is by getting vaccinated.”

Another two people were reported Thursday to have died in New York City, according to CBS News. Both of those patients had prior health issues.

“We are deeply saddened by the two reported deaths and our hearts go out to the individuals’ loved ones and community,” New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said in a statement.

“Every effort will be made to prevent additional suffering from this virus through continued community engagement, information-sharing and vaccination.”

The sixth new death was reported in Nevada on Thursday of a resident in Clark County, described as a male over the age of 50 with underlying medical conditions.

“This is a tragic situation, and our sympathies are with his family and friends,” said Dr. Fermin Leguen, an official with the Southern Nevada Health District.

The new deaths came after the first death was confirmed in Los Angeles County on Sept. 12. That person was “severely immunocompromised” and had been hospitalized for the illness.

Ohio announced the second death in late September.

Health officials in Texas said in late August that they were investigating the death of a person who was diagnosed with monkeypox but it has not been determined whether the virus contributed to their death.

  • ‘Trigger finger’ stuck in bent position may be a sign of diabetes

After often identifying the problem in people who had or developed diabetes, researchers began to speculate that this trigger finger, which frequently affects the ring finger or thumb, might signal diabetes. Steve Buissinne/Pixabay provided the image

A finger that “locks” may be a warning sign of diabetes, for example.

After often identifying the problem in people who had or developed diabetes, researchers began to speculate that this trigger finger, which frequently affects the ring finger or thumb, might signal diabetes. It is characterized by thickening of the connective tissue sheath and tendons utilized to bend the finger.

“At the hand surgery clinic, we have noted for a long time that people with diabetes, both Type 1 and Type 2, are more often affected by trigger finger,” said researcher Mattias Rydberg, a doctoral student at Lund University and resident physician at Skåne University Hospital, both in Lund, Sweden. “Over 20% of those who require surgery for this condition are patients who have, or will develop, diabetes.”

A painful condition, this thickening causes the finger to become fixed in a bent position toward the palm. It can often be treated with cortisone injections, but sometimes requires surgery.

In the new study, researchers examined two Swedish health databases, including the national diabetes registry, to study whether high blood sugar increased the risk of trigger finger.

In all, between 1% and 1.5% of the population is affected by trigger finger, the study found. In people with diabetes, the rate was 10% to 15%. Trigger finger was especially notable in people with Type 1 diabetes.

High blood sugar was linked to an increased risk of trigger finger in both men and women with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, according to the report. However, the study could not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Blood sugar is measured in HbA1C, or long-term blood glucose. Men with the worst blood sugar levels had a risk for trigger finger up to five times higher compared to men with a well-regulated HbA1C level, the study found.

“However, we can’t know for certain if any of the groups seek health care more often than others which could be a factor that affects the results,” Rydberg said.

Why diabetes might create this increased risk isn’t known. A theory is that high blood sugar thickens both the flexor tendons and their connective tissue sheaths, causing them to lock more easily. People with unregulated blood sugar are more prone to nerve entrapments in the hand.

Lars Dahlin, a professor at Lund University and consultant in hand surgery at Skåne University Hospital, said, “It is important to draw attention to the complications from diabetes and how they can arise in order to discover them early, which enables faster treatment and thus a better outcome.”

Dahlin added that, “in addition to nerve compressions and trigger finger, there may also be a link with thickening of the connective tissue in the palm (Dupuytren’s contracture), impairment of joint movement and the risk of arthritis at the base of the thumb.”

He said the mechanisms behind these complications probably differ in the case of diabetics.

“The results of this study are interesting, as we can show that blood sugar dysregulation has a connection with the development of trigger finger,” Dahlin said in a university news release.

The researchers now aim to learn how effective it is to operate on patients with diabetes who are affected by trigger finger.

Rydberg said, “From our experience at the clinic, surgery goes well and there are few complications, but it takes a little longer for patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes to regain full movement and function.”

He said it would also be interesting to study whether trigger finger could be a warning signal for Type 2 diabetes.

The findings were recently published in Diabetes Care.

Frimpong, who lasted the entire duration of the game bagged his 5th goal of the season but it was enough as Xabi Alonso’s side were held at home.

Diaby missed an early spot kick to give the home side the lead as Leverkusen’s curse from 12 yards continued, however he made made no mistake moments later, though, latching on to Adam Hlozek’s pass before tucking his shot through the legs of the onrushing Koen Casteels to make it 1-0.

  • SHS applicants unable to defend grades at interview – NTC Principal

The Principal of the Nursing Training College (NTC), Bolgatanga, Mr William Sebil, says most of the 800 Senior High School (SHS) applicants with excellent grades are unable to defend their results before the College’s admission interview panel.

“Crippling worrying trends that are emerging and seen to be very disturbing among the applicants is that, when they face the interview panel, they simply cannot express themselves. Some come with grade ‘A’ in all eight subjects but cannot defend the grade,” he said.

The Principal recalled that an applicant faced the panel and said, “For me, I was taught by my teacher in the examination hall. These types of applicants unfortunately are usually caught by the rigorous internal examination tools used by the College.”

Mr Sebil said this at a matriculation ceremony for fresh students of the College in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Regional capital.

He said when such students were demoted or dismissed, members of the public should bear with management of the College and not conclude that the examination board or management of the College were wicked or bad.

Mr Sebil said the College was noted for churning out intelligent, professional and properly trained nurses spread all over Ghana and outside the country, insisting that management would not in anyway compromise on its standards.

He encouraged trainees of the College to inculcate in themselves a sense of purpose, saying, “I urge you to find your purpose. Choosing your preferred choice of becoming a nurse is the first step in the right direction.

“Now comes the real work as we have in the nurses pledge; ‘My personal life shall all time bring credit to my profession.’ Set your sight on a noble cause from now and work tirelessly to achieve it,” Mr Sebil said.

He further admonished them to step out of their comfort zones, explore and learn new skills, make new friends and be deliberate about their personal growth.

The Principal urged them to make conscious efforts to apply themselves to learning; not just to pass their examinations but attain skills that would help them in the future.

He said there was the tendency for some students to be carried away by the freedom they enjoyed, and cautioned them that “The freedom you now have, means that you must take decisions on your own and act maturely because you will be held individually responsible for all your actions and omissions.”

He commended both teaching and non-teaching staff of the College for their sacrifices over the years despite all the infrastructural challenges, which had culminated in the upliftment of the enviable academic performances of the College.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Stephen Yakubu, in a speech read on his behalf, acknowledged the sacrifices of the tutors and members of the Advisory Board of Governors of the College over the years.

He said their sacrifices were reflected in the milestone achieved by the College over the years, “When the name of the College is mentioned now and in the future, your names shall remain perpetually imprinted.”

  • Pfizer plans to sell COVID-19 vaccines for up to $130 per dose because of its ‘value’

    21 October (UPI)
Pharmaceutical behemoth Pfizer announced on Friday that it would charge up to $130 per dose for its COVID-19 vaccinations, citing the vaccine’s “value.”

According to NBC News and CNN, the vaccine, which is currently free, would cost between $110 and $130 per dose when the U.S. government stops covering the shots at the beginning of 2023.

The cost comes even after Pfizer sold $36.7 billion of its COVID-19 vaccines in 2021, contributing to 45% of the company’s revenue that year.

In a report earlier this year, the international nonprofit Oxfam found that the pandemic created more than 40 new pharmaceutical billionaires.

Oxfam said that drug companies such as Moderna and Pfizer have profited from the monopolies their companies currently hold in vaccines, treatments, tests and personal protective equipment largely coming from public funding.

“Pharmaceutical giants are making over $1,000 a second in profit from vaccines alone and they are charging governments up to 24 times more than it would cost to produce vaccines on a generic basis,” Oxfam said, citing research the nonprofit previously conducted.

Pfizer, which has been accused of using “dirty tactics” to boost profits including funding misinformation about the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine, has sold the most vaccines in the world but has delivered the least to low-income countries as a proportion of total doses sold.

  • Three persons remanded for conspiracy to commit crime

Three persons have been remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court for conspiring to commit crime and causing unlawful damage.

Mr Amankwah Dotse, aged 38, Mr Emmanuel Kpobi, aged 50, and Mr Raphael Agboli, all Land guards, were jointly charged with conspiracy to commit crime and causing unlawful damage.

Again, Mr Agboli, was charged with two counts of threat of death.

They pleaded not guilty to all the offences levelled against them.

Mr Yaw Dankwah, counsel for the accused persons, prayed for their bail, saying that they were not a threat to society and not a ‘fright risk.’

He said his clients had a fixed place of abode, as well as people of substance to stand as sureties.

Prosecution opposed the bail on the grounds that the accused persons would interfere with police investigation if granted bail.

The prosecution said the investigator needed ample time to do an investigation on the land.

He said there was the need to conduct a forensic investigation on a suspected Indian hemp found on one of the accused persons.

The Court presided over by Mrs Evelyn Asamoah remanded the accused persons into police custody to reappear on October 24, 2022.

Police Chief Inspector Samuel Ahibor, prosecuting, told the Court that complainant, Mr Jonathan Kwabena Ofori, was a Businessman and resided at Ofankor-Accra whilst the accused persons were residents of Kpobikope-Mayera.

The prosecution said suspects Mensah Dogbe and Godson Atakorah were at large.

Chief Inspector Ahiabor said in 2004, the complainant acquired 20 plots of land at Mayera from Nana Ansah Henry and Dr Kumah for building purposes.

The prosecution said the complainant walled the land and put up a two-bedroom house on it for his caretakers, Erica Blankson and Emmanuel Owusu Danso, witnesses in the case.

Chief Inspector Ahiabor said on August 20, 2022, the accused persons went and broke a portion of the fenced wall and sold part of the complainant’s land to one Michael Sackey.

The prosecution said the matter was reported to the Police and the accused persons were arrested.

Chief Inspector Ahiabor said during investigations, the accused persons were warned by the Regional Police Command not to go to the land again.

The prosecution said on October 12, 2022, the accused persons went back to the land, pulled a pump action gun on the caretakers, and threatened to kill them.

Chief Inspector Ahiabor said the Anti-Land Guard Team from Accra Regional Police Headquarters rushed to the scene and arrested the accused persons.

The prosecution said a search conducted in Mr Dotse’s bag revealed one wrap of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Chief Inspector Ahiabor said investigations were still ongoing to apprehend suspects at large to assist police investigations.

  • Sovie Technical/Vocational Institute cries for infrastructure

Reverend Father Jeremiah Ankutsitsia, Principal of the CYO Technical/Vocational Institute, Sovie (SOVTECH), says the Institute has earned an “unenviable nickname” among its own students who had declared out of frustration that the Institute can best be referred to as “Uncompleted School”.

He said the description was as a result of the uncompleted buildings in the school, which outnumbered the completed ones.

Rev Fr Ankutsitsia, speaking during the 40th anniversary launch of the Institute, said although the Institute could be said to be making giants strides when it came to student population and staffing as well as other personnel related needs, same could not be said about its infrastructure.

He said after 40 odd years of the Institute’s existence, not much had changed in the aspect of physical development of the school, adding that “SOVTECH pretty much remains stunted when it comes to classrooms, workshops, laboratories, administration block, dining hall, assembly hall, students’ dormitories and staff bungalows.”

Rev Fr Ankutsitsia said although it was not meant to say government over the years had not shown commitment to the school since the evidence of ongoing projects are dotted all over the campus, basic facilities such as toilets and portable water were still in short supply.

“However, I wished to put on record that some of these stalled projects are as old as six years,” he added.

Rev Fr Ankutsitsia said management and staff, however, always encouraged the students to see the positive part of the circumstances, which meant that SOVTECH had the potential of becoming a shining example once all the projects were completed.

He said the Institute was poised to uphold the dreams and aspirations of the founders, which included assisting learners to access higher education in their chosen fields of study as well as equipping learners to set up their own enterprises and employ others.

Rev Fr Ankutsitsia appealed to everyone to donate towards the building of a conducive office facility, which would be an administration block to mark the Institute’s 40th anniversary celebrations next year.

Mr Senyo Emil Wordey, Presiding Member of Kpando Municipal Assembly, on behalf of the MCE, said problems confronting the Institute were taken note of and would be resolved soon, adding that the lightening issues would be worked on over the week.

He said the Assembly had advanced plans to factor the Institute’s dining Hall project into the Assembly’s 2023 Budget.

Mr Edmond Kudjo Attah, North Dayi District Chief Executive (DCE), pledged to donate 40 desks to the Institute to enhance academic work.

  • Indonesia bans all syrup medicines after 99 child deaths

After 99 children died this year from acute kidney damage, Indonesia has banned the sale of all syrup and liquid medications.

According to the nation’s Food and Drug Monitoring Agency, ethylene glycol was discovered in the suspended medications in quantities that “above the safe limit.”

According to the BBC, 200 cases of AKI in children, the most of whom were under five, had been reported by Indonesian health officials.

“Some syrups that were used by AKI child patients under five were proven to contain ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol that were not supposed to be there, or of very little amount,” Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Indonesia’s Health Minister, said Thursday.

Ethylene glycol, along with diethylene glycol, are typically added as cheap adulterants in propylene glycol, which is used as a solvent in cough syrups. The metabolism of these compounds causes significant liver and kidney damage, according to The Straits Times.

Earlier this month, The World Health Organization issued a global alert over four cough syrups that were linked to the deaths of 66 children in the Gambia.

The organization released the alert for Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup and Magrip N Cold Syrup, all made by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited in Haryana, India.

The WHO said Maiden failed to provide safety guarantees and respond to quality issues surrounding the products.

“Laboratory analysis of samples of each of the four products confirms that they contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol as contaminants,” the WHO said in a statement.

After the WHO announcement, Maiden was ordered to stop all manufacturing activities.

  • Don’t wear uniform for political activities – GRNMA to trainee nurses

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has cautioned trainee nurses to desist from wearing their uniforms to attend political rallies and activities.

The Association’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Mr Thomas Lambon, who gave the caution, expressed concern that some student nurses were seen in uniform at political programmes, an act he said was unhealthy to the nursing profession.

According to him, “Once some members of the public see you in the uniform, they conclude you are a nurse, meanwhile you are still under training that is why the GRNMA is very concerned.”

Mr Lambon was speaking at the matriculation ceremony of first- and second-year trainee nurses of the Nursing Training College (NTC), Bolgatanga.

He said the Association was not against its members, nursing and midwifery trainee’s involvement in politics, but indicated that the uniform must not be worn for political activities.

He said the nature of the nursing and midwifery profession enjoined them to render care to every member of the public without any form of discrimination and must not be seen in uniform engaged in political activities.

“At least everyone has a Party they support, and the Association is not against that, but we do not want to see you in uniform at political programmes.

“If the politicians visit your school that is fine, because you are in school but we do not support the use of the uniform for political activities outside your campus,” he emphasized.

The Association’s Chair called on all Principals of Nursing Training Colleges to ensure that the nursing uniform was not used for political activities outside their campuses.

He urged the matriculants to concentrate on their studies and not rely on stakeholders, especially Chiefs and politicians, to intervene on their behalf if they failed to meet the required marks to be registered for their licencing examination.

The GRNMA Chairman said the Association was concerned about their training, and would continue to encourage them to learn, as that was the only way they could graduate successfully as professional nurses.

“Learn and pass well, so that you will be registered to write your final examination and pass out as a professional nurse and join the GRNMA, which is the mother Association for nurses and midwives in Ghana,” he said.

  • National Security Ministry presents logistics to its agencies in UWR

The Minister of National Security, Mr Albert Kan-Dapaah, has presented branded motorbikes and vehicles to some security agencies in the Upper West Region to enhance the maintenance of peace and security in the region.

The Ghana Police Service received 20 motorbikes and a pickup; the Ghana Armed Forces, 15 motorbikes and a pickup, and the Ghana Immigration Service had 10 motorbikes and a pickup.

Addressing the security personnel in Wa at a brief ceremony to present the logistics, Mr Kan-Dapaah acknowledged their efforts  in ensuring regional peace and security.

He said the Prisons Service,  Fire Service, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) would also receive their share of the logistics later through the Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih.

He acknowledged that the ministries of Defence and Interior had played crucial roles in providing the security officers with the requisite training and logistics to work with, which had earned Ghana the enviable status as the most peaceful country in West Africa and second in Africa, next to Mauritius.

“I know they are doing well but, we thought at the Ministry of National Security that we could also do something, however small, to complement what my colleagues in the Ministries of Defence and Interior are doing,” Mr Kan-Dapaah said.

“This is why we thought it’s necessary to have a look at our budget to see what we can do to assist.”

He commended members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the security and intelligence agencies for the work done to maintain peace in the country.

It was the duty of every government to provide public services to the citizens, including health and educational facilities, he said,  but security was the most important as none of the other services could be enjoyed without security.

He said Ghana had been the preferred destination for foreign nationals for businesses or education due to security and urged stakeholders, especially the security agencies, to up their game to maintain that status.

Dr Salih, on his part, said the logistics  was timely as it would help improve the security situation in the region.

Commenting on the recent killings and abductions in Wa, he said the REGSEC was not resting on its oars and would work to bring the perpetrators to book.

Brigadier General Matthew Essien, General Officer Commanding, Northern Command, on behalf of the security agencies, acknowledged the government’s efforts in supporting their work.

He commended the National Security Minister for the logistics and said it would make them more effective in their duties but appealed for more support to beef up security.

  • Homicide is a leading cause of death among pregnant women

According to a recent study that was published on Wednesday in the BMJ, homicide is a major cause of mortality for pregnant women in the United States, and the risk is rising.
Image from Pixabay and Free-PhotosIt is their husbands and boyfriends who are more likely to kill pregnant women than high blood pressure, bleeding, or infection.According to a recent study that was published on Wednesday in the BMJ, homicide is a major cause of mortality for pregnant women in the United States, and the risk is rising.

It’s “a shocking situation linked to a lethal combination of intimate partner violence and firearms,” the researchers said in a journal news release. They were led by Rebecca Lawn, a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

Ending male violence in the United States, including gun violence, could save the lives of hundreds of women and their unborn children every year, the investigators said.

Intimate partner violence is common worldwide, with 1 in 3 women experiencing physical, sexual or psychological abuse from a partner during their lifetimes.

The problem is even worse in the United States, which has a higher prevalence of both past-year and lifetime intimate partner violence than other high-income countries. Researchers said the U.S. situation is very serious and deteriorating.

Between 2008 and 2019, about 68% of homicides in pregnancy involved firearms. Black women were at substantially higher risk of being killed than White women or Hispanic women. Rates of domestic homicides are also associated with state-level rates of gun ownership and firearms legislation, the authors said.

Few people accused of intimate partner violence are ever convicted, the authors said, noting many loopholes allow access to firearms.

And, they added, women may be facing more risk because of the recent dismantling of reproductive rights in the United States.

Controlling a woman’s reproductive choices is common in intimate partner violence. Restricting access to abortion may worsen the risks in abusive relationships.

Pregnancy is also a time for screening and intervention, because women have more interactions with healthcare providers. These interventions may help stop a pattern of abuse that could lead to homicide or adverse health outcomes, researchers said, but they must accompany urgent work to reduce all forms of violence against women.

Research on how to identify risk factors for homicide in pregnancy is also critical to prevention efforts, the researchers added.

  • Police find cocaine worth £1.2m hidden in wheelchair at Milan airport

Almost £1.2m worth of cocaine was found in a motorised wheelchair in Italy.

A sniffer dog helped police at a Malpensa Airport in Milan make the discovery.

The user of the wheelchair was pretending to be disabled, and Financial Guard police found the drugs stuffed in the upholstery of the wheelchair.

The man was immediately arrested, police said.

The canine unit was on patrol at the airport checking arriving passengers and their luggage from the flight from the Dominican Republic, a commonly used drug smuggling route.

When the dog drew the officers’ attention to the wheelchair, police checked the luggage but found nothing.

They then cut open the upholstery of the wheelchair and found cocaine.

Police said when the discovery was made, the user, a Spaniard, got up from the wheelchair and walked unaided.

In total, 11 packets of cocaine, weighing 13.25kg (25.21bs) was seized, and it could have made 27,000 individual doses, police said.

  • Not exposing 2022 World Cup squad comes with positives – Ibrahim Sannie Daara

Former Ghana Football Association [GFA] communications director, Saanie Daara, has backed the technical team of the Black Stars not to expose the squad ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

With less than a month to the kick-off of the Mundial, a 55-man provisional squad has been sent to Fifa without making it public.

The list according to multiple reports includes names of Hudson Odoi, Abdul Salis Samed, Majeed Ashimeru, and a host of other names.

“World football has changed completely, and I agree with the point that sometimes you should trick your opponents a bit. As part of it, I will agree with the thought we should not make public our full squad to anybody until the World Cup when we can pull surprises,” Sannie Daara told Joy Sports.

Saanie also called on fans to exercise patience for the good of the national team.

“If it is, we want to please fans as they want to know what the squad looks like, fans should also understand that the World Cup is the big deal. Through these friendly matches, you can see some of your errors, and players who can fit in certain positions or not. But also, you must go into the tournament with some element of surprise.

“If you don’t and maybe you start playing with your first full team in your friendly matches, already you have given maybe 80% of your strategy to your opponents. These days, people are going into the nitty-gritty, the tiniest details before they play matches. We have 3 video analysts, and Portugal has 20. Which means they are monitoring the movements and tricks of every player you have.”

The squad of 55 will be pruned down to 26 and submitted on November 14 – a deadline set by FIFA.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group H, alongside Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea.

  • Vegan who failed to deal with mouse infestation and fed them instead is fined by court

A vegan who failed to deal with a mouse infestation at her home because of her ethical beliefs has been fined by a court.

Margaret Manzoni, 73, of St Osyth in Essex, “considered the mice her pets” and “said they would not go to her neighbours because she looked after them”.

Tendring District Council prosecuted the pensioner for a second time after she did not comply with a previous order made in April.

At a hearing at Colchester Magistrates’ Court this month, Manzoni was told that while the court “respected her beliefs as an ethical vegan, others saw mice as vermin”, the council said.

BEST QUALITY AVAILABLE Undated handout photo issued by Tendring District Council of a mouse inside a boot. Vegan Margaret Manzoni has been fined at a hearing at Colchester Magistrates' Court after she failed to deal with a mouse infestation at her mid-terrace home, claiming that taking action would go against her ethical beliefs. Tendring District Council said 73-year-old Ms Manzoni, from St Osyth in Essex, considered the mice her pets and said they would not go to her neighbours because she "looked after them". The authority prosecuted the pensioner for a second time after she did not comply with a previous order made in April. Issue date: Wednesday October 12, 2022.
Image:Tendring District Council released this picture showing a mouse inside a boot

The court said the “impact of the infestation on neighbours meant inaction was not appropriate”, according to the authority.

Manzoni admitted at the hearing on 6 October to charges of failing to comply with a notice under the Environmental Protection Act and a notice under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act.

She was fined £1,500, with the court awarding the council costs of £2,395 and imposing a victim surcharge of £150.

The court heard that the council’s environmental health team was called in by neighbouring residents who were over-run by mice, causing property damage, due to conditions at Manzoni’s mid-terrace home, the council said.

Council staff made several visits and offered help, before issuing notices “ordering Manzoni to stop feeding birds, to clear the overgrown garden, and call in pest control”, the authority said.

“While some building works were carried out by the council, food and shelter continued to be provided by Manzoni for the mice – leading to an overpowering smell and which forced neighbours to move out,” a spokesman for Tendring District Council said.

“Tendring District Council offered Manzoni alternative accommodation but, she considered the mice her pets, said they would not go to her neighbours because she looked after them, and refused to take action stating it went against her ‘ethical beliefs’.

“This led to the first prosecution, since which despite continued regular visits by the environmental health team nothing has changed; leaving the council no choice but to prosecute again.”

He said the GRA will find means of retrieving this amount owed by the companies as part of efforts to meet the government’s target.

Speaking to Accra-based Joy FM on Tuesday 22nd October, 219, Prof Adei further stated that the inability of the GRA to meet the revenue target set by the government is largely due to the lack of compliance by the companies.

Prof Adei who was recently appointed the GRA Board Chair said he will ensure that the tax net is widened to include non-taxpayers.

“Right now there are companies and individuals certified who are owing GRA GH¢5billion and the budgetary gap is GH¢3.4 billion,” he said.

He added: “So this is not somebody being asked to pay more taxes. It is those who have been found to owe money that is to be paid.”

  • Cheddar’s outfit raises eyebrows at event

All the attention was shifted to Freedom Jacob Cheddar’s outfit when a video of him walking majestically at an event, while clad in his army-inspired regalia, went viral.

The Kyidomhene of Akyem Tafo, Queenmother Nana Adepa Amponsah, held a dinner and a fundraiser to mark her 5 years of reign and Cheddar was part of the invited guests.

Touted as one of the richest men in Ghana, Cheddar became the center of attraction as he made his way to the first row to exchange pleasantries with the celebrant.

Dressed like an army general, he was clad in a brown two-pieced apparel with a sache and a beret, while strutting like a soldier in the midst of the quiet-seated audience.

Cheddar had a number of badges on his outfit and Ghana’s Coat of Arms embroidered on certain parts of it.

Scores of netizens while questioning why he is fond of rocking such outfits, drew the attention of the military to look into it.

According to others, this particular mode of dressing depicts that Cheddar is a chief commander in his own world.

  • Speculation not cause of cedi depreciation – Bright Simons

Bright Simons, the vice president of IMANI Africa, has indicated that market economic statistics demonstrate that speculation is not to blame for the cedi’s sharp decline.

He maintained that if the rumors were accurate, it would eventually have strengthened the cedi.

In his article titled “Ghana Should Not Set Up the IMF to Fail,” the IMANI Africa Vice President made the statement.

Bright Simons noted that the country’s current inflation rate is evidently a reason for the cedi’s depreciation as people seek to find ways to preserve the value of their assets.

He said: “there are multiple factors involved with complex interrelationships… the linkage becomes stronger when the effects are so pronounced.”

The Ghana cedi has depreciation by over 50% in the past 8 months of 2022.

While many have attributed the rise to factors such as speculation and the activities of black-market operators, Bright Simons in the article said, “The government’s focus on speculators is wrongheaded because the conditions exist for the vast majority of rational economic actors to want to hedge against the currency. To focus one’s energies in such circumstances on the smaller number of actors with the financial heft, risk appetite and risk capital to profit from the situation is distracting.”

He further said: “Speculation primarily involves the use of risk capital to make gains from future shifts in the exchange rate, known in the jargon as “Inter-temporal carry-overs”.

“Sometimes those speculating are following the herd or trying to find the right bandwagon. But profit is a major intention. In that sense, speculators can actually be stabilizing if they sense that the local currency will rise in the future and start to dump their inventories of foreign currencies forcing the rate to align with the long-run equilibrium rate. Many theorists even go as far as argue that speculation at variance with fundamentals is always loss-making and thus unsustainable,” he said.

He however calls on the government to cut wasteful expenditure and “lay a good ground for securing an IMF deal.”

An update on Ghana’s economy is overdue. So here goes. This essay is a series of notes to be read leisurely. Some key takeaways:
    – Speculation is NOT the reason for the Cedi’s woes.
    – The govt is not laying good ground for the IMF deal.
    – Govt, cut WASTE!https://t.co/dAML9CIMbC

  • NPP Flagbearership Race: Kwabena Agyepong tours diaspora chapters; preaches “New Dawn”

An aspirant for the flagbearership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has started a tour of the diaspora chapters of the Party to share his vision of a” New Dawn”, “New Dimension” and “New Direction” towards rallying support for his campaign.

“Ghana is really at the crossroads and what the country urgently needs now is the crack of a ‘New Dawn’ of astute political leadership with a vision that inspires hope in the youth, rejuvenates our political base and rekindles the faith of Ghanaians in our constitutional democracy.”

Addressing the Los Angeles Chapter of the NPP in the United States, on Sunday, Mr Agyepong described his cause as a “redemption mission”, in a news brief to the Ghana News Agency.

He said his vision was: “To create a critical mass of patriots needed to generate the momentum required to cause a seismic shift in the thinking and orientation of what public service and party politics should mean to politicians, political appointees, civil servants and indeed all our countrymen.”

Mr. Agyepong said the NPP needed to aspire for a “new deal, new dimension, and new direction” led by a generational leader “who is courageous, committed, compassionate and competent”.

“In all humility, I trust I fit the bill and hopefully with your support, we can create a broad coalition of the willing to help mobilise a groundswell of grassroots support for our project to rescue our motherland Ghana.

“The aim is to restore the cherished values of service, sacrifice and selflessness back into our body politic,” Mr. Agyepong said.

He reiterated his commitment to working hard to win the NPP presidential primaries, and subsequently the hearts and minds of Ghanaians towards obtaining a historic third term in the 2024 General Election.

He expressed gratitude to the Diasporan NPP Chapter members for the kind words of encouragement, support and the expressions of solidarity and goodwill for his decision, “to contest the Flagbearership of our dear party, NPP”.

“We have a sacred duty to recalibrate and reawaken all Ghanaians to set us on a path to deliver meaningful progress and prosperity for our long suffering underserved population. Let us do this together now,” Mr Agyepong told members of the chapter.

He is expected to attend the opening plenary of the 2020 Convention of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) going on in Anaheim California.

From there, he will be the special guest of the NPP UK branch on Sunday October 30th at the Dominion Centre, Wood Green, London.

Mr Agyepong will also have some media engagements in London.

  • Kelpie becomes Australia’s most expensive working dog

A 1-year-old kelpie became the most expensive working dog in Australia when she was auctioned for more than $31,000.

Breeder Chris Stapleton, who runs the Capree Stud dog breeding business in Newbridge, New South Wales, said the kelpie, named Eve, was put up for auction Thursday and sold for $31,285.52 to farmer Ross Gilmore of Black Springs.

Stapleton said the sum fetched by Eve, which amounts to $49,000(AUS), was especially meaningful to him, as he celebrated his 49th wedding anniversary on the day of the auction.

The breeder said he was surprised by the large sum fetched by Eve, but he was expecting a relatively high amount.

“She’s a very nice dog to have around because she’s not hyperactive and when you need a job done, she’s willing and able to do it. She’s the perfect dog,” Stapleton told The Guardian.

Stapleton said Eve’s bloodline goes back 50 years to some of the original dogs he obtained for his breeding business.

The previous record sum paid for a working dog in Australia was $22,346.80, set in 2021.

  • Climate activists arrested after throwing mashed potatoes at $110 million monet painting

Two protesters were arrested after hurling mashed potatoes at a Claude Monet painting inside the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, Germany, NBC News reports.

The museum released a statement via Twitter declaring “Grainstacks,” the 1890 painting from Monet which was targeted in the protest, was not damaged after undergoing an “immediate conservation investigation.” The pair was eventually charged with trespassing and property damage.

According to Reuters, “Grainstacks” was sold for a record $110.7 million at an auction in 2019.

The German climate activist group the Last Generation took responsibility for the incident. “If it takes a painting—with #MashedPotatoes or #TomatoSoup thrown at it—to make society remember that the fossil fuel course is killing us all,” the tweet reads. “Then we’ll give you #MashedPotatoes on a painting.”

“While I understand the activists’ urgent concern in the face of the climate catastrophe, I am shocked by the means with which they are trying to lend weight to their demands,” Ortrud Westheider, director of Museum Barberini, said in a statement, obtained by USA Today. “It is in the works of the Impressionists that we see the intense artistic engagement with nature.”

A similar incident occurred earlier this month when two protesters, who claimed to be from the group “Just Stop Oil,” flung tomato soup at Vincent van Gogh’s 1888 painting “Sunflower” at the National Gallery in London’s Trafalgar Square.

The two were charged with criminal damage and aggravated trespassing, but the painting did not sustain any damage.

  • Ian Evatt heaps praise on Leeds United midfielder Darko Gyabi

Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Evatt has eulogized Ghanaian midfielder Darko Gyasi who had an impressive game for Leeds United U-21 team despite defeat.

The midfielder featured when Leeds United U-21 team suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bolton last weekend.

Despite the defeat, the Ghanaian put up a splendid performance and has therefore earned plaudit from the Bolton manager.

“The boy who was involved in the Kalvin Phillips transfer to Manchester City [Darko Gyabi] was also very impressive in midfield. They have spent a lot of money on that team and some of them are way out of our price range, but you take admiring glances at young players learning and developing. I thought the way they came and tried to implement their game plan on us was very good.

“I said to the lads today, the disappointment on their coaching staff and players’ faces yesterday like they expected to win – it’s no bad thing really. They have obviously got into a habit of winning; they have been performing really well.”

Frimpong, who plies his trade for Bayer Leverkusen has been in a rich vein of form, scoring five goals as a defender this season. It is not surprising he has earned a place in the Netherlands 38-man provisional squad.

With 27-days to the start of the mundial, the enterprising right-back has hit top form, which comes as a good news for the Dutch national team.

His inclusion means, the right-back will not feature for his native country, Ghana.

The Amsterdam-born defender was on target when his side shared the spoils with Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga on Saturday.

He lasted the entire duration in Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw against Wolfsburg.

  • James Corden says he hasn’t ‘done anything wrong’ and is ‘so zen’ after claims he abused restaurant staff

James Corden says he hasn’t “done anything wrong, on any level” and is “so zen” after a restaurant owner called him the most abusive customer his business had served in 25 years.

Keith McNally, owner of Balthazar in New York, banned Corden from the restaurant earlier this week and said The Late Late Show host was a “tiny cretin of a man” who had abused staff during two visits.

The first time, in June, the British actor and comedian is said to have been “extremely nasty” and demanded all his drinks were paid for after finding a hair in his food, despite apologies from the manager.

On another visit earlier this month, Corden allegedly “began yelling like crazy to the server” after finding a “little bit of egg white” in his wife’s egg yolk omelette.

Mr McNally detailed his claims on Instagram on Monday, but in a later post the same day said Corden had called him and “apologised profusely”.

The restaurant owner said he’d revoked Corden’s ban and that he was welcome back.

Corden has now spoken about the controversy for the first time in a New York Times interview planned before the claims surfaced.

On the suggestion he could have pulled the interview, he said: “I haven’t done anything wrong, on any level. So why would I ever cancel this? I was there. I get it.”

Corden, 44, said he feels “so zen about the whole thing” and called it “so silly” but admitted he might address it on air.

“I think I’m probably going to have to talk about it on Monday’s show. My feeling, often, is, never explain, never complain. But I’ll probably have to talk about it.”

  • Nigeria’s floods are the worst in a decade. Here’s how people try to cope with the devastation

Flooding is not unusual in Nigeria’s massive, population-dense cities. But this year’s floods are reportedly the country’s worst in a decade. They’ve killed more than 600 people, displaced 1.4 million residents and destroyed 89,348 houses and 70,566 hectares of farmland and crops.

The severe flooding has had a significant impact on some states in the south of the country, including Anambra, Delta, Rivers, Cross River and Bayelsa. Adamawa, Gombe, Jigawa, parts of Kaduna, Kogi, Niger, Benue and Nasarawa in the country’s north have also been hit hard.

This year’s rainfall has been higher than usual in both the south and the north. The volume of rainfall has exacerbated the effects of the annual release of excess water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam. The dam is on the Benue river, which runs through Nigeria.

Over the years, the government has taken several measures to mitigate and manage the effects of floods. These include providing food, warm clothes and temporary shelter for flood victims. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has also developed early warning systems and the federal government established the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development in 2019 to coordinate disaster risk reduction activities.

These measures have not helped, especially as flooding is now an annual occurrence. In fact there is some eviden that the effects of floods have worsened in recent years due to a lack of coordination among various government agencies.

In previous research I established that many factors contribute to flooding in Nigerian cities. These include poor drainage systems, the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and haphazard physical developments. Climate change plays a role, too; research shows that climatic shifts are increasing the intensity and frequency of storm systems in Africa. The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report also predicted an upward trend in extreme rainfall events for sub–Saharan African communities.

Given these realities, how do residents cope? In a recently published article I examined the flood resilience strategies of residents in Nigeria’s Kaduna metropolis. Kaduna is the capital city of Kaduna State, and the former political capital of northern Nigeria. The city’s southern area is flood-prone and is among those hit by the recent floods.

I found that households’ ability to prevent, cope with and reduce flood risks is determined by their income, housing, transport, drainage and road facilities.

My hope is that this study will provide information that could be useful to policy makers to make Nigerian cities safer and more resilient to floods.

    Household resilience

I interviewed residents from 357 households – ranging from low to high income – and found that they employed various tactics to survive the floods. Across the study area, strategies were similar in that they were reactive rather than anticipatory. This is because adequate flood preparedness requires collaborative efforts from government and other relevant stakeholders, including households. Such efforts did not exist.

In high income areas, I heard how community members raised funds to clear drains and waterways and to repair and replace damaged bridges. Some community leaders also sought to educate residents about flood preparedness through public dialogue and religious institutions.

In the low and medium income communities, sandbags were used to keep some floodwaters at bay. People also temporarily moved away from their homes when there was flooding, shifting what they could of their belongings and properties to higher ground. They sought financial and accommodation support from civil society organisations, government and nongovernmental agencies.

When I asked residents about what motivated them to move to safe places, respondents in all income brackets said their main concern was “keeping the family unit together”.

My results show that household resilience strategies are typically short-term in nature, regardless of income brackets. They also failed to effectively help households offset impacts such as loss of jobs and displacements due to flooding.

    Way forward

Inadequate support from government leaves residents largely to their own devices when it comes to flood mitigation.

In my view, the Nigerian government at all levels must engage residents, and other relevant stakeholders, to implement both short and long-term solutions. These must be designed to reduce and overcome the impacts of flooding in Nigerian cities.

The starting point is the sensitisation of residents and businesses located in high-risk areas. They need to know what to do in times of flooding to minimise the negative effects. Similarly, all stakeholders’ roles, obligations and responsibilities before, during and after flooding need to be clearly identified and tied to specific government agencies for further support.

In addition, the federal government must collaborate with state governments to ensure that appropriate environmental and development control laws are strictly enforced.

This will prevent new development on wetlands and floodplains and ensure that new development follows flood-resilient standards when building in coastal areas.

Residents also need to embrace a collaborative approach to handling flood issues. This should be done through knowledge sharing and coordinated efforts to help them advance their local coping strategies. Social learning is one key aspect that households should embrace to communicate, share experiences, ideas and resources and plan collective action.

  • Micro-Credit sector’s total assets jump by 146.76%

With total assets rising by 146.79 percent annually to GH 410 million as of the end of December 2021, the Micro-Credit sector made enormous gains in 2021 compared to 36.3 percent growth in 2020.

The modest recovery in economic activity following COVID-19 and an increase in the number of members reporting were blamed for the increase in asset growth.

Additionally, as of December 2021, gross loans and advances totaled GH 312 million.

This amount represented a growth of 15.13 percent over the 8.3 percent recorded in 2020. The higher growth in gross and net loans and advances reflects the higher credit demand by Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises.

Again, shareholders’ funds continue to drive the funding of total assets with robust growth of 74.33percent to GH¢304.8million as at December 2021, relative to the 74.14.1 percent growth recorded in 2020 with total borrowings reduced by 16percent in December 2021, compared with 24percent growth in the previous year.

The slowdown in borrowings was mostly due to the increase in loan repayments and profit ploughed back into the business, according to a report by the Micro-Credit Association of Ghana (MCAG).

Giving highlights of the performance of the sector as captured by the report during MCAG’s 13th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Accra on Thursday, October 20, 2022, the chairperson of the Association, Wilberforce Ofori, said the association’s accumulated funds stood at GH¢1.9million with actual revenues being GH¢1.2million as compared to the total budget revenue of GH¢1.4million at the end of 2021. The key revenue items were Subscriptions, Licence & Licence processing fees, Membership Registration fees, and Training fees.

He said the total expenditure amounted to GH¢780,340.00 as compared to a budgeted expenditure of GH¢1.24million with the key expenditure items being Onsite Inspection and Supervision expenses. Personnel Emoluments, Governing Council Expenses, and General Administrative expenses.

“The Association continues to be thrifty in the management of financial resources and I can confidently report that the target the Governing Board set in 2021 with regard to finance has been achieved,” Mr. Ofori told the AGM.

He said the corporate governance structure of the Association has seen healthy improvement with the balance of skill and experience which is buttressed by a comprehensive framework, based on integrity, transparency and consensus building.

“The quality of governance is a reflection of the diverse competencies and expertise of the members of the Association,” he stated leading to the remarkable financial being under year in review.

In a speech delivered on his behalf, the Head of Other Financial Institutions Supervision Department of the Bank of Ghana, Yaw Sarpong said the central bank sees MCAG as a partner in the supervision of micro-credit institutions and it is thus required to ensure that micro-credit companies comply with the various laws and directives governing the operations of the sub-sector.

“To ensure safe and sound institutions within the sub-sector, the Bank of Ghana in collaboration with MCAG has started onsite examination of individual money lenders. Similarly, the Bank of Ghana recently commenced the examination of MCAG and other umbrella bodies and authorised agents. This is done with the aim of strengthening supervision and adding value to the operations of the institutions,” he stated.

As part of its support MCAG to enhance its operations and strengthen the micro-credit sub-sector, the Bank of Ghana extends quarterly support to the Association.

“The financial support is to augment the finances of the Association to undertake monitoring and engagement of licensed institutions, facilitate the training of members, support members to put in place basic corporate governance structures, conduct market surveillance to identify unlicensed operators and support the efforts of the Bank of Ghana to strengthen stakeholder engagements through public education and awareness,” he stated.

On his part, the Executive Director of the MCAG, Ebenezer Quartey, Esq. pledged that the Association will continuously train and build the capacity of its members because the industry is dynamic evolving very fast and there is a need to continuously improve to stay relevant.

“The Association believes that effective Inspection Supervision are critical tools for assessing the health member institutions,” he stated.

  • Ghana’s economy likely to hit full-blown recession – Lecturer

Ghana will probably see a full-blown recession, according to Daniel Osabutey, a prominent lecturer at the Accra Technical University’s business department.

The country still depends on the Guggisberg economy of exporting raw materials and importing finished goods, the instructor claims.

Even though the nation has found oil in commercial amounts, Mr. Daniel Osabutey explained that the demand and supply chains in the nation have not changed.

He noted that the low confidence in the cedi and the high inflation rate will likely push the country into a recession.

He maintained that a recession is a point of no return for the country.

He stressed the downgrade of the economy by the financial grading institutions has led to the scarcity in the supply of dollars into the country.

He said Ghana imports 90 per cent of finished goods and exports only 10 per cent of goods.

He noted that the fundamentals of every strong economy are a strong export market, high employment rates, and high industrialization.

Mr Osabutey was commenting on the state of Ghana’s economy in an interview with the host of the Ghana Yensom morning show, Emmanuel Quarshie (The Hitman) on Accra 100.5 FM on Monday, October 24, 2022.

He revealed that from 2018 to 2021, the government borrowed a whopping amount of US$11 billion from the Eurobond market only to shore up the cedi.

He stated that because of the downgrades, Ghana’s Eurobond is no more attractive on the international markets.

The lecturer argued that the speculations on the cedi have led to people buying the dollar and hoarding them and that this has led to the fast depreciation of the cedi.

He cautioned Ghanaians to desist from quoting prices of goods and services in dollars.

  • FLASHBACK: Govt wont use taxpayers’ money to pay locked-up funds of unlicensed institutions – Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president, has declared that the government will not use taxpayer funds to reimburse depositors whose funds were held hostage in the defunct Menzgold Company Limited.

Menzgold is not a financial institution that is authorized, he declared.
We are referring to licensed financial institutions, but if you set up your 419 institutions and the Bank of Ghana repeatedly warned people not to do business with Menzgold because they were not a licensed financial institution, then you cannot use taxpayer money to release funds that have been frozen at a non-licensed financial institution.

The Akufo-Addo government will not use taxpayers’ money to pay depositors whose investments have been locked up in the now-defunct Menzgold Company Limited, Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said.

Dr Bawumia told Agya Owusu on Techiman-based Link89.1 FM in the Bono East Region during his recent tour of that part of Ghana that, unlike the situation where the government rescued 4.4 million depositors whose funds got locked up in some banks and specialized deposit-taking institutions who were collapsed by their regulatory authorities over infractions and insolvency, the customers of Menzgold are not entitled to such rescue since they defied all warning from the Bank of Ghana to do business with an unlicensed financial institution.

“Menzgold is not a licensed financial institution. We are talking about licensed financial institutions but if you set up your 419 institutions and the Bank of Ghana warned repeatedly that people should not do business with Menzgold because they were not a licensed financial institution, so, you can’t use taxpayers’ money to pay locked-up funds of an institution that is not a licensed financial institution,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Two weeks ago, some aggrieved customers of the gold-trading company said they deserve a bailout just like the other companies that were licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and collapsed with a “written letter” because their operations were contrary to their terms of the license.

According to the aggrieved customers, they deserve a bailout since Menzgold was under the regulation of SEC.
