  • We are receiving threats of contract termination – School Feeding Caterers

President of Greater Accra School Feeding Caterers Association, Madam Juliana Cudjoe, says members of the Association are receiving threats of contract termination for demanding payments of arrears owed them.

She said they had not been able to return to the schools after reopening because their arrears for the last two terms had still not been paid.

Mr Kwaku Frimpong, a School Feeding Caterer at Teshie Presbyterian Primary School, said: “From January to now, we have not received a penny. The situation is very worrying. As of now, many of our colleague caterers are even scared to come out and talk.”

He said many of them had invested all they had (money) into the scheme and had not been able to recoup anything.

“It has even become difficult for some of us to go out these days because of our debt situation… we have been buying these foodstuffs on credit to cook.”

Meanwhile, Mr Siiba Alfa, Public Relations Officer, Ghana School Feeding Programme, said the threat claims were new to the Secretariat, adding that, they would look into the matter.

“We will be engaging our various coordinators on the issues raised and ensure that the issues are addressed,” he said.

He said the Secretariat would ensure that the caterers had a conducive working environment.

When the GNA visited some schools in Accra, it observed that the caterers had not returned to cook for schoolchildren after school reopened.

Some school authorities who spoke with the GNA said the caterers had complained that they had no funds to cook for the children.

The school heads said the situation had affected teaching and learning because some pupils were unable to concentrate in class from midday.

  • Yung Miami talks Diddy relationship: ‘We’re having the time of our lives, but we’re still single’

Following the success of her new podcast Caresha Please, Yung Miami has opened up about her relationship with Diddy and what it’s like to co-parent with Southside.

In an interview with XXL magazine, Miami suggested she and Diddy are in an open relationship of sorts. “We are dating. We single, but we’re dating,” she said. “People don’t know what dating means. He’s single, I’m single, but we’re dating. That’s what I mean when I say we go together. When we’re together, we’re together. We’re having the time of our lives, but we’re still single.”

The two have been connected since June 2021 at least, but they only really confirmed they were seeing each other when Diddy, 52, appeared on Caresha Please in June. “He see other people outside of me and I see people outside of him. I’m young. I’m dating. I’m, you know, having fun. I’m doing me,” said 28-year-old Yung Miami.

“He’s doing the same thing. I can’t speak for exactly what he doing or who he seeing, but we single and we dating. But we are dating each other, but we single. I think it just went over people’s heads, you know? People just like to take whatever they wanna take from.”

Asked about what she likes about the mogul that other people might not know, she added that he’s “very funny” and has been supportive of her. “He brings out the better qualities of myself,” she said. “That’s one thing I love about him. He brings out more confidence in me.”

Elsewhere in the interview, she touched upon co-parenting with her ex-boyfriend Southside, with whom she split in late 2020. The couple welcomed their daughter Summer Miami Luellen in October 2019.

“Yeah, that’s my baby daddy. He’s real cool,” she said of the prolific producer. “I’m not gonna lie, at first, it was kind of rocky, but, you know, we had to put our differences to the side and just understand that we got kids together. We can’t raise our kids in a bad environment because it really takes a toll on the kids.”

The two publicly clashed shortly after their breakup, and Yung Miami even appeared to accuse Southside of being “a dead beat dad” in a tweet she shared and promptly deleted last year. It seems as though they were able to sort out their differences.

She also took a moment in the interview to confirm that she and JT have completed work on a new City Girls LP. “We do have an album. It was supposed to drop on July 29, but, you know, it’s a lot putting out an album. You have to get records. You have to get sample clearance. You have to get features cleared. You have to do producers’ agreements. So, it was a lot that set us back,” she said. “We will be dropping an album before the year is out for sure.”

  • Kevin Hart on his appreciation for Will Smith despite slap: ‘The world should step out of it and let them recover’

Kevin Hart is coming to Will Smith’s defense.

On Drink Champs, the comedian defended Smith when he was asked in his conversation with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN to choose between the King Richard Oscar-winner and Ice Cube.

“Dark times deserve fucking great light,” the 43-year-old shared at the two-hour mark of the above video, clearly referring to Smith, 54, slapping Chris Rock, 57, during the Academy Awards. “I’m not gonna shit on my brother. They both are my brothers, but I’m not gonna take the time to shit on them. I’mma say Will Smith, and here’s why: Will Smith is a fuckin’—he’s not only a legend, he’s not only a GOAT.”

Hart proceeded, with notable seriousness, to credit Will with giving a platform to Black actors and creators in Hollywood.

“Will Smith is the reason why the idea of African Americans attached to global IP is normal. … Studios took the gamble on more leads of color because of the work that Will Smith, Denzel were doing in the beginning, right?” he explained. “You need the faces that are giving the universal return. So I’m not gonna shit on Will and act like he hasn’t been, and wasn’t, that guy.”

Hart added, “And people make mistakes, and from mistakes they should be allowed time to fuckin’ recover. … And that this is no longer the world’s problem, it’s Will and Chris’s problem. Let them deal with that. The world should step out of it and let them recover.”

In more lighthearted news related to Hart and the slap, the Jumanji actor snuck a blinged-out goat into Madison Square Garden during a show featuring him, Rock, and Dave Chapelle in July. The farm animal was a gift for Rock—named Will Smith.

In a July statement to Rock, Smith apologized to Chris’ mom and family (including Tony Rock), saying he didn’t realize “how many people got hurt” by the slap heard around the world.

“I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is, he will reach out,” Will shared. “So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Smith added, “There is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment. There’s no part of me that thinks that’s the optimal way to handle a feeling of disrespect, or insults.”

  • White comedian fired after he allegedly used N-Word performing on carnival cruise and got exposed on social media

A white comedian was fired after a clip surfaced of him using the N-word several times during his stand-up routine on a cruise ship.

TikTok user Pamela Frilot posted a since-muted video of Rob O’Reilly performing while aboard a Carnival cruise, with the caption, “Get me off this ship!!”

Frilot later elaborated on what happened during O’Reilly’s set.

Additional footage shows O’Reilly telling those offended by him to leave, supporting Frilot’s account of what she witnessed. His remarks were evidently met with a rousing ovation from the crowd, which wasn’t allowed to record his set.

TMZ reported Carnival has cancelled O’Reilly’s remaining performances on its ships and banned him from boarding its vessels going forward.

The news of O’Reilly getting metaphorically thrown overboard led to people unearthing old tweets that were disrespectful, in poor taste, and flat-out unfunny.

Carnival replied to the above tweet, writing, “We do not tolerate this language or behavior. The person in question is no longer welcome on Carnival ships and the rest of his scheduled appearances have been cancelled.” The company has not otherwise posted on its feed about the incident or issued a press statement at this time.

O’Reilly’s Twitter account has since been deleted. His YouTube channel contains videos like “Nerdy Comedian Answers Heckler’s Phone, Wins Over Black Crowd,” “If Spider-Man Were Black,” and “Racist Oscars.”

  • Christian Bale on Chris Rock Making Him Laugh During ‘Amsterdam’ Shoot: ‘I Couldn’t Act’

Chris Rock’s natural penchant for hilarity resulted in Christian Bale being unable to act while in production on David O. Russell’s new film Amsterdam, out next month.

In an interview with IndieWire, shared Monday, Bale—who plays Burt Berendsen in the Russell-penned ensemble piece—recalled being “excited” to meet Rock on the first day of shooting. Bale, a self-described “big fan” of Rock’s standup, also noted how quick Rock was to start telling him stories at the behest of Russell.

“And I was loving it,” Bale said of the experience, though he later had to pull back as part of his usual process of ensuring he is able to fully get into the mind of his character. With Rock, Bale added, he was “forgetting” how to tap back into his interpretation of Burt.

“But Chris is so bloody funny and I found that I couldn’t act, because I was just becoming Christian laughing at Chris Rock,” Bale told Christian Zilko. “So I had to go to him, I went ‘Mate, I love talking to you, and we have mutual friends, but I can’t do it anymore. Because David didn’t ask me to make this film so he could just watch me giggle. He wants me to be Burt, and I’m forgetting how to be Burt.’”

Speaking more generally on his approach to having brought a wide variety of different characters to the screen over the years, Bale said he makes a point to “isolate” himself to protect his process.

Joining Bale and Rock in the Amsterdam cast are Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Anya Taylor-Joy, Mike Myers, Zoe Saldaña, Michael Shannon, Robert De Niro, Taylor Swift, Rami Malek, and many more. Following its New York City premiere this month, Amsterdam is slated to open nationwide on Oct. 7.

The period piece marks the second film of the year for Bale, who appeared in Thor: Love and Thunder over the summer. Bale has worked with Russell before, including in American Hustle and The Fighter. For Rock, meanwhile, Amsterdam marks his first feature since last year’s Saw franchise-expanding Spiral.

  • James Blake responds to Kanye West previewing new music he produced in London

The artist formerly known as Kanye West previewed new music on Monday night, fresh off the debut of his soon-to-be-copied take on flip-flops.

Indeed, while in attendance at the Burberry Spring/Summer 2023 aftershow party at the Twenty Two club in London, Ye previewed a selection of new songs, including one that was briefly (and incorrectly) assumed by fans to include a James Blake sample.

Blake himself later confirmed via Twitter that one of the teased tracks does not include a sample of his 2016 song “Always.” Instead, Blake said, “it’s new.” In later tweets, Blake also confirmed he produced not only the track in question but “the other two” as well.

Given that the music-previewing went down on his birthday, Blake later added he was “good for presents.”

See additional footage of Ye teasing the new tracks below. Also in the house for the Burberry party were Jordss, Naomi Campbell, Irina Shayk, Daniel Kaluuya, Normani, and more.

It goes without saying that a Ye and Blake collaboration, although it’s currently unclear whether there are any plans for an official release of the newly teased music, marks a pairing that has long been wished for among fans. Nearly a decade ago, Ye said during an interview with Wired 96.5 in Philadelphia that Blake was his favorite artist.

“I listen to James Blake the most,” Ye said at the time. “That’s, like, my favorite artist. … Just go listen to his music and say, ‘Hey, that’s Kanye’s favorite artist.’”

  • Kirani Ayat calls out Akufo-Addo, Tourism Ministry after promo video featured shots from his ‘Guda’ visuals

Musician Kirani Ayat and video producer David Nicol-Sey have called out the Tourism Ministry for using their footage in a new promotional video without their consent.

The video shared on President Akufo-Addo’s Twitter page sees him call on people especially in the diaspora to make Ghana their destination for Tourism.

The two-minute video featured different scenes from different parts of the country and a voice-over by the President encouraging tourism.

However, in the video were also shots from the VGMA and 3Music nominated video for the song ‘Guda’ released in 2018 by Kirani Ayat.

The video directed by David Nicol-Sey was shot mainly in the Northern part of Ghana showcasing the culture and the beauty.

Kirani Ayat who was not pleased to see his work used without his consent noted that he spent his all in making the video without aid from anyone and yet he was not compensated after his content was used.

“The president of Ghana has used my video “GUDA” in this ad to promote Ghana. I was actively reaching out to the Ministry of Tourism in 2018/19 to use this video to push tourism in the North and got NO reply, yet today it’s in an ad and no one reached out to me for permission,” he wrote.

Kirani Ayat added that “whoever worked on this video should’ve reached out to the rightful content owners before proceeding. I spent my all in making GUDA possible, I’m sure you were paid for this job, where is my cut?”

The musician added that he worked as a security guard for three months to earn money to shoot the video.

“I worked 7 days a week from 7 pm to 7 am for 3 months straight as a security guard just to save up to make this “GUDA” video possible. Various awards shows snubbed it, the Ministry ignored it, and I reached out a couple of times to no avail. I was depressed throughout that period.”

Meanwhile, the director David Nicol-Sey also on Twitter stated that creatives deserve to get paid for their content especially when they had no help from anyone when making their content.

“Creatives struggle to create content with their last dime with zero support from @NAkufoAddo and @MOTACGhana. Did your team reach out to the content owners for authorisation before using @KiraniAYAT’s GUDA and @FuseODG’s African girl in promoting your “visit ghana” campaign?”

The topic ‘Greedy Men’ has for the past five hours been the headlining trend on social media in the country. On the bird app, ‘Greedy Men’ takes the top spot for the most engaged topic.

It all began when ace journalist and television personality, Kafui Dey published on his official Twitter page that he has nominated Stonebwoy’s hit single, ‘Greedy Men’ for the Grammy Awards category, ‘Best Song for Social Change’.

The category was established to honour songwriters and musicians whose songs address a timely social issue and promotes understanding, peacebuilding and empathy.

In his post, the celebrated media personality wrote, “I have just submitted @stonebwoy’s anti Galamsey song ‘Greedy Men’ to the Grammy @RecordingAcad for consideration in the ‘Best Song for Social Change’ category. Try and do same too.”

  • Daphne Joy responds to 50 Cent after he speaks on rumored relationship with Diddy

Daphne Joy responded to 50 Cent after the Queens rapper and father of her child perpetuated an unsubstantiated rumor on Instagram involving Joy and Diddy.

Joy initially responded when 50 Cent took to Instagram to post a picture of him and their shared son Sire Jackson, while accusing her of galavanting with Diddy.

“Please stop doing this to me. I never bother you and I’m an outstanding mother to our son. Can we please just focus on that. Please,” Joy wrote in the comments section.

The photo–which depicts the G-Unit leader and Sire wearing sunglasses and staring at the camera straight-faced–also sees Joy engaging with Diddy, according to 50 Cent.

“Oh shit, that’s your mommy over there with Puffy. LOL,” 50 Cent wrote in the caption. “Remember what i told you the other day, these b!tche’s be crazy. SMH.”

50 Cent’s trolling only added fuel to the fire, as questions of an alleged affair between Joy and Diddy had already begun swirling after the former posted a video of herself enjoying Diddy’s iHeartRadio Music Festival performance on Saturday. Joy thought it best to issue a lengthier response to the allegations.

“I hate speaking about my private life on social media. But I feel it needs to be addressed,” she wrote in a post shared to her Instagram. “I’m so tired of my narrative being what it is. I was in a two-year relationship 10+ years ago, and out of the relationship, God blessed me with a beautiful, healthy baby boy. Although my child’s father and I parted ways, I shifted my focus on my son’s well-being emotionally, spiritually, and everything in between.

She continued, “I’ve healed privately, matured, have been closer to God than ever before, and really appreciating this life. I just want to be happy and be left alone. We are all human, and you never know where life can take you. I value and cherish anyone I bring into my life, and when I finally show a glimpse of my happiness, I feel attacked for it. I’m so tired of defending my character, being prejudged, and constantly being villainized. I’m not doing anything wrong I wish no ill to anyone. I just want to be happy. Thank you, and God bless.”

Ray J replied to the post after it had been reshared by The Shade Room, writing in the comments: “Story of my life!!”

The latest claims come after a photo of Diddy and Joy surfaced back in 2021, with 50 Cent commenting at the time, “Nah me and puff fight over business shit. If he like the girl, he like the girl I don’t give a f*ck !”

50 and Joy’s 10-year-old son, Sire, was born in September 2012, and will soon star alongside his father in his upcoming horror film Skill House, which is set to be released in 2023.

  • Cardi B and Akbar V trade series of disses on social media

Cardi B and rapper Akbar V have started trading shots after they both shared a series of subliminal tweets.

Word started to circulate on Twitter that Cardi’s remix with GloRilla, “Tomorrow 2,” had brought in some huge numbers following its release last week, but in a recent tweet Akbar appeared to doubt the success of the track.

“If @chartdata ain’t say it we ain’t believing the CAP,” wrote Akbar V, who recently appeared on a remix of Nicki Minaj’s No. 1 track “Super Freaky Girl” alongside JT of City Girls, BIA, Katie Got Bandz, and Maliibu Miitch.

Not long after, Cardi came through with a number of tweets seemingly directed at Akbar.

“Count all the times chart data posted u,” she wrote. “I don’t really like the internet games… My dms is open and also the streets!”

Someone then seemingly provided Cardi with Akbar’s phone number, as the latter revealed on Twitter.

“Who gave this ho Cardi B my number…gotta be one of y’all weird ass hoes?”

“I don’t gotta @ I can change a bitch life just by a mention,” tweeted Cardi as it came to light that she had directly contacted Akbar. “AND YES I HIT THEM DIRECTLY, I don’t do the internet!!”

Akbar responded in disbelief—and brought Nicki Minaj into it.

“Bitch talking bout she can change my life. ho @NICKIMINAJ change my life I’m on a tape u produced and didn’t know u produced it and showed love to ur dog face ass still cause we was cordial and u ain’t take me number #1 so if u couldn’t change my life with that u can’t do it now. … @NICKIMINAJ is the #QueenOfRap and @iamcardib u are the peasant ho.”

Cardi also asked why Akbar decided to run to the internet after they spoke over text and potentially a phone call.

“Been subtweeting me for months and now you wanna make it about another woman as a shield,” Cardi wrote. “Stand on your shit!!!”

When Cardi wrote that she takes care of her kids, presumably accusing Akbar of neglecting her children, they began to reply to each other’s tweets without dancing around the subject.

“See the difference between me and u I had n***as wanting to put babies in me while I was in the jungle but I said to myself I won’t put my kids in the same hoodes I was raised in let alone ABANDONED THEM,” she wrote in response to Akbar saying Cardi was known for “selling it to any man that ran up on u” before she was famous.

Akbar accused Cardi of not writing her own music, while Cardi continued to talk about parenting skills.

“I’m about to do something you never do…pick my kid up from school,” she wrote. “You got 20 minutes to talk your shit cause after that my attention go to my kids the whole day.”

Cardi wound up sharing a clip from Akbar’s leaked sex tape, in which she said to the man she performed a sex act on, “Tell me you love me.”

The tweet was deleted, but Akbar clearly saw it first. “Now my kids got to watch this again @iamcardib u dead wrong for uploading that porn stuff about me again u scoop so low but kool,” tweeted Akbar. “U just threw me back into anxiety.”

In response, Cardi wrote, “Unmmmm wasn’t you bragging about it when the video first came out…talkin bout you got good head? Anyways imma respect your kids and take it down.”

A fan pointed out, however, that Akbar previously used a screenshot from the leaked tape as the cover art for her song “Leaked.”

“WAIT A DAMN MINUTE…she lied to me?” tweeted Cardi.

Cardi put an end to the discussion shortly after, and posted a video from her car in which she talked about the support for “Tomorrow 2.”

“Tell me you love me,” she said in the clip, referencing Akbar’s leaked tape. “Tell me you love me Bardi gang.”

Once Akbar brought Offset into things, saying he called her as well, the Migos rapper quickly got into the fray.

“Police ass hoe I ain’t called you and If Any N***a played with me get blitzed ask around!!” Offset tweeted in response.

  • Ghana star Thomas Partey expected to make injury return for Arsenal against Tottenham Hotspurs

Ghana star Thomas Partey could be available for Arsenal when they face Tottenham Hotspurs in the North London derby on Saturday.

Partey was ruled out of the Black Stars friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua due to injury.

The midfielder who recently recovered from a thigh problem, was in the starting lineup for the Brazil tie last Friday but was withdrawn after he felt uncomfortable during warmup.

The former Atletico Madrid star was granted permission to leave Ghana camp in France for further assessment.

It is understood the Gunners are hopeful Partey will be fit in time for the north London derby this weekend after assessing the player.

Partey has featured four times this season for the Premier League giants.

  • Asante Kotoko are local champions, says Hearts of Oak legend Charles Taylor

Hearts of Oak legend, Charles Assampong Taylor has taken a swipe at Asante Kotoko, describing his former club as “local champions.”

The Porcupine Warriors made a poor start to the 2022/23 season, having exited the CAF Champions League at the hands of minnows RC Kadiogo after emerging as the champions for the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League.

Kotoko defeated the Burkinabe side 1-0 away but lost by the same scoreline at home, before suffering a penalty shootout defeat to the visitors.

Seydou Zerbo’s side also conceded a late goal to draw with rivals Hearts of Oak on Sunday in the matchday three games at the Baba Yara Stadium after dominating the game.

Fans of the club have been very critical of the referee who officiated the game following a series of controversial penalty calls that were denied.

Reacting to this, Taylor, who won the Ghana Premier League with Kotoko, slammed the club over their recent poor form.

“Asante Kotoko are local champions. They wasted the important penalties against Kadiogo. They should stop demanding penalties against Hearts of Oak, it’s needless,” he said, as quoted by Angel FM.

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko have also since petitioned the Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association to take disciplinary actions against the referee.

Taylor was one of the most exciting talents in the Ghana Premier League from the late nineties to the early 2000s.

He was part of Hearts’ famous 64 Battalion that won the treble of league, FA Cup, and CAF Champions League in 2000.

He later crossed carpets to play for Hearts’ bitter rivals Asante Kotoko, in what was a very controversial transfer move.

Taylor is remembered by many Ghanaians for his electric pace and skills on the flanks, having dazzled in his prime. He is also a former top scorer in the Ghanaian league.

His comment come following Andre Ayew claims that some players are guaranteed spots in the Black Stars team irrespective of their club form.

Ayew’s assertion has created a heated argument within the footballing fraternity and on Social media.

Speaking to Hot FM, the former Hearts of Oak star took a swipe at the Al Sadd forward and has therefore called for the exclusion of Ayew brothers.

“It’s obviously wrong for Dede to say this, very wrong but you see that’s what happens if you entertain people for long,

Sounding extremely disdained, the legendary former Hearts of Oak’s player argued that,

“I believe as a nation we have entertained the Ayew’s for too long a time in the national team, it’s time we drop them from the team”.

  • Booing of Akufo-Addo a vote of no confidence – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the booing of President Nana Akufo-Addo at the Global Citizen festival as a reflection of the mood of Ghanaian youth.

A statement, signed by Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the party, said the “action of the youth reflects an overwhelming vote of no confidence” in the government.

“The events of that day were unprecedented, as no sitting Ghanaian President, at least under the Fourth Republic, has ever been subjected to such ridicule and embarrassment.”

The NDC also criticised attempts to blame it for the booing of the President amid the indicators like the soaring inflation that underscore the cost of living crisis.

It said, “the mess” overseen by the Akufo-Addo administration will not be solved by blaming of political opponents.

The opposition party said this was “not only insulting to the sensibilities of Ghanaians but also underscores the fact that this government and their hired apologists are simply oblivious of our present reality, or perhaps they are underestimating the anger of the Ghanaian people.”

“The frustrations expressed by the youth on that fateful day perfectly reflect the excruciating and frustrating times Ghanaians presently find themselves,” the party added.

The NDC also argued that the disaffection from the youth highlighted the need for an agenda to create sustainable and meaningful jobs.

  • Andre Ayew does not deserve a place in Black Stars – Charles Taylor

Former Ghana midfielder Charles Taylor has taken a swipe at Andre Ayew for claiming some senior players in the Black Stars are guaranteed a spot ahead of the World Cup.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Ayew claimed that some senior players could make the Black Stars squad for the upcoming World Cup.

But his comment has created a heated argument within the footballing fraternity and on Social media.

Taylor in an interview with Onua FM indicated the Al Sadd star does not deserve a place in the national team at the moment.

“If Dede Ayew is saying that the senior players in the Ghana Black Stars team, have qualified to the world cup tournament yet to be played in Qatar, then I think he is wrong. Because senior players are the football players who know how to play football very well, and not a football player who has been in a football team for a very long time.

If what Dede Ayew is saying is the truth, then Sergio Ramos would not sit on bench for a young football player like Pedri to play for the Spanish national football team.

You see, to be honest with you, Dede Ayew does not deserve to be part of the Black Stars squad, Charles Taylor said.

  • Ex-president Mahama backs Ghana to hammer Nicaragua in today’s friendly

Former President, John Dramani Mahama is optimistic that Ghana will beat Nicaragua in the friendly match scheduled to be played this evening.

The leading member of the National Democratic Congress was disappointed just like all Ghanaians last Friday when Brazil took the Black Stars to the cleaners.

At the end of that contest, Brazil beat Ghana 3-0 in fine fashion.

Ahead of the second friendly match of the September international break today, John Dramani Mahama says a win for Ghana will do the Black Stars a lot of good.

The ex-president says he is trusting the team to beat the opponent this evening.

“Need to shake off the glitch in the 1st half of the Ghana/Brazil game. An emphatic victory against Nicaragua in this friendly soccer match will boost the confidence of the Black Stars. Trusting the team to deliver as we continue to support them.

“Go Black Stars Go,” part of a post on the Facebook page of the former president reads.

This evening’s friendly match between Ghana and Nicaragua will be played at the Estadio Francisco Artes Carrasco in Lorca, Spain.

  • Top Hearts of Oak officials pushing for the appointment of coach Prosper Narteh Ogum

Hearts of Oak are on the hunt for a new head coach following the exit of Coach Samuel Boadu.

Earlier today, the capital-based club announced that it has parted ways with the head coach and his two assistants.

“Accra Hearts of Oak Plc has decided to part ways with the entire technical team of the senior team led by Coach Samuel Boadu with immediate effect. The Club is of the opinion that there is the need for a new direction and the energy to ensure its broader objectives are achieved and it feels the time for that new direction is now.

“The Board and management will like to thank Samuel Boadu and his assistants for their contribution to our history and the memories – which will always remain with us. The club will like to wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors,” an official Hearts of Oak statement said on Tuesday, September 27.

After checking with some sources, it has been uncovered that former Asante Kotoko coach Prosper Narteh Ogum is leading the race to be appointed as the new head coach.

It is understood that some officials of Hearst of Oak are pushing for the board to sanction the appointment of the gaffer who is on the market after ending his stay in Kumasi where he guided the reds to win the Ghana Premier League title last season.

  • Thomas Partey’s absence won’t affect us against Nicaragua – Otto Addo

Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo has stated that his charges will cope without injured Thomas Partey in their game against Nicaragua on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Ghana will be without Partey who has suffered a knee injury and has been excused from camp.

According to Otto Addo, his tactical plan for the friendly tonight will not be affected by Partey’s absence.

“With the tactics, it doesn’t affect a lot because tactics involve the style of play and players with such abilities so I think tomorrow’s game we will be okay. Hopefully, Thomas will be healthy very, very soon,” said Addo in a pre-match presser.

“We didn’t want to take that risk in a friendly game to play him against Brazil but surely playing a player like him against a squad like Brazil would have been helpful,” he added.

The match comes off at the Estadio Francisco Artés Carrasco in Spain at 18:00 GMT kick-off time.

  • Ukraine war: Russia to open war enlisting hub on Georgia border

Russia is to open an army enlisting centre on the border with Georgia, where massive queues have formed as Russian men try to flee the country to avoid being sent to fight in Ukraine.

Officers at the Verkhniy Lars crossing will be tasked with serving summons to “citizens of the mobilisation age”, the authorities say.

Recent satellite images have shown queues going for miles from Russia.

All those crossing into Georgia look exhausted, a BBC correspondent says.

They are hungry and sleep deprived – but relieved to have reached safety, Rayhan Demytrie says. People have been coming in groups of walkers, dragging their suitcases behind them. Others have arrived in car or on bikes.

One man, Ilya, showed our correspondent a polaroid of his baby daughter Arisha. He said he wanted to see her grow up, and not die in the senseless war in Ukraine.

Dima and Zhenya, two brothers in their early 20s, said they had travelled for days from Bashkiria – Russia’s republic about 1,500km (932 miles) east of the capital Moscow.

Dima asked for a hotspot to call his mother. On the other end of the line there was a sigh of relief.

Another young man from Moscow said the reason he was fleeing was because of the man in the Kremlin, President Vladimir Putin.

Everyone says the same thing: they disagree with the war – but the extent of repression in Russia makes them powerless, our correspondent says.

The interior ministry of Russia‘s North Ossetia republic, where the Verkhniy Lars crossing is, said 60 of its personnel had already been deployed there, describing the situation as “extremely tense”.

It added that the army enlisting centre would be opened “in the nearest future”.

Long queues have also been reported on Russia’s border crossings with Mongolia and Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev vowed on Tuesday to protect the safety and welfare of Russians fleeing a “hopeless situation”.

The Russian defence ministry on Tuesday said it would not seek the extradition of Russian nationals travelling abroad to avoid being drafted into the army.

President Putin announced what he described as a partial mobilisation on 21 September, with Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu later saying 300,000 reservists would be called up.

But reports in opposition Russian media suggested that up to one million people could be called up, pointing out that the actual number of those who would be enlisted was classified.

A number of military experts in the West and Ukraine say Mr Putin’s decision to call up reservists shows that Russian troops are failing badly on the battlefield in Ukraine – more than seven months after Moscow launched its invasion.

In an unusual move on Monday, the Kremlin admitted that mistakes were being made in its mobilisation drive., amid growing public opposition across the vast country.

“There are cases when the decree is violated,” Mr Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding that “all the errors will be corrected”.

On Tuesday, Sergei Baranovsky, the top official responsible for war mobilisation efforts in the extreme north-eastern Magadan region, was sacked.

Multiple reports – backed by footage on social media – say people with no military experience, or who are too old or disabled, are being called up.

Since the mobilisation announcement, more than 2,000 people have been detained at protests across Russia.

“We are deeply disturbed by the large number of people who have reportedly been arrested,” UN rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said on Tuesday.

In one of the most shocking and widely-discussed incidents, a man shot and critically injured an army recruitment officer in the Siberian city of Ust-llimsk on Monday.

  • Drop Dede and Jordan from the Black Stars team – Esme Mends ‘fumes’

Former Hearts of Oak player, Esme Mends has stated candidly that skipper of the Black Stars Dede Ayew and his junior brother, Jordan Ayew must be dropped from the Black Stars squad.

It would be recalled that Dede Ayew who was playing down suggestions that some players are guaranteed spots in the Black Stars team irrespective of their Club form while speaking in an interview with Daily Graphic admonished that apart from senior players no one is guaranteed a place in the squad just yet.

Dede Ayew’s assertion has created huge controversy within the footballing fraternity and on Social media.

Reacting to Dede’s pronouncement in an interview on Hot 93.9Fm’s ‘Focal Sports’ show – hosted by Stonchist D’Blakk Soulja, the former Hearts of Oak player, Esme Mends disagreed with the Captain of the Black Stars.

According to Esme who is now a Coach, “It’s obviously wrong for Dede to say this, very wrong but you see that’s what happens if you entertain people for long.”

Sounding extremely disdained, the legendary former Hearts of Oak player argued that “I believe as a nation we have entertained the Ayew’s for too long a time in the national team, it’s time we drop them from the team.”

Dede together with his junior brother Jordan were part of the Black Stars team that lost 3:0 to Brazil in Ghana’s first friendly match played in France last Friday ahead of the Qatar World Cup.

  • More mortgage lenders pull deals on rate rise fears

Santander and Yorkshire Building Society have now suspended mortgage deals after a fall in the pound fuelled forecasts of rising interest rates.

The lenders join Virgin Money and Skipton Building Society in halting mortgage offers for new customers.

Meanwhile, Nationwide said it will lift rates on a range of fixed mortgages.

On Tuesday, the Bank of England‘s chief economist said that action would have to be taken – an indication that interest rates could rise sharply.

In a speech, Huw Pill said: “I think it is hard not to draw the conclusion that all this will require a significant monetary policy response.”

Economists now expect interest rates to more than double to 5.8% by April, from the current level of 2.25%. Interest rates had previously been forecast to hit 4% by next May.

Lucian Cook, head of residential research at estate agency Savills, said fixed-rate mortgages were “incredibly difficult to price at the moment” because there is a lack of certainty over interest rates.

The number of residential mortgages on offer by lenders fell to 3,596 on Tuesday, compared with 3,961 deals on Friday when the government announced a mini-budget, according to financial information firm Moneyfacts.

Julie-Ann Haines, chief executive at Principality Building Society, said lenders had to “stress-test” mortgages to make sure that if the Bank of England base rates go up customers can still afford their monthly payments.

She said the reason mortgage rates were going up quite quickly in recent months was because banks and building societies have to be able to make a margin.

Economists began forecasting a hike in interest rates when the pound plunged against the dollar on Monday.

The Bank of England issued a statement on Monday saying that it would “not hesitate” to raise interest rates after the pound hit record lows.

Overnight, the pound stabilised at $1.08 but is still at its lowest level against the dollar for 37 years.

    ‘I just want a home’

    Robin PriceImage source, Robin Price

Sales assistant Robin Price, who is on the minimum wage, has been saving up his mortgage deposit for years and thanks to that and an inheritance, is now ready to buy. But with the threat of a sharp rise in interest rates looming, he says he now feels completely lost.

“I just want a home,” says the 38-year-old, who fears monthly mortgage repayments will become unaffordable to him just when he wanted to buy his own place.

“I can’t find anywhere that I can afford a mortgage on in London or Essex because I don’t earn enough,” he says. “If I was in a couple it would probably be a different story.”

Mr Price moved out of his rental property to live with his sister in Suffolk while waiting to find somewhere to buy.

“Then Covid hit and I’m still struggling to find somewhere. I’m unsure what to do.”

Friday’s mini-budget offered help to first-time buyers by cutting stamp duty, the tax paid when people buy a property in England and Northern Ireland.

But any savings Mr Price could have made from this will be wiped out if interest rates more than double.

Mr Price says he is now looking at houses closer to his father in Norfolk, but fears he will not be able to get a mortgage deal.

    2px presentational grey line

The Chancellor’s plans will require a large increase in government borrowing.

Concerns among investors about the UK’s ability to pay that debt led to the value of the pound falling and pushed the cost of UK government borrowing to near record levels.

Experts said a rise in the cost of long-term borrowing meant the current cost to mortgage lenders of offering new deals was now more expensive.

There are also concerns that would-be borrowers will rush to secure mortgages at favourable rates before interest rates rise and if they do jump, homeowners will not be able to afford higher repayments.

A weaker pound makes imports and goods priced in dollars, such as oil, much more costly and risks fuelling price rises at a time when UK inflation is at its highest for 40 years.

Some 8.3 million people have mortgages in the UK, according to banking trade body UK Finance.

The Bank of England has already lifted interest rates seven times in a row since December to the highest rate in 14 years.

    Mortgage deal graphic

Samuel Tombs, chief UK economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said if interest rates rise as predicted, the average household refinancing a two-year fixed rate mortgage in the first half of next year would see monthly payments jump to £1,490 from £863.

“Many simply won’t be able to afford this,” he said.

    Changes to mortgage deals include:

    • Santander is removing all 60% and 85% loan-to-value mortgages to new customers, and raising lending rates on new mortgages as well as on transfers
    • Yorkshire Building Society is withdrawing deals for new customers from Tuesday evening
    • Nationwide is increasing rates on two, three, five and 10-year fixed mortgages
    • Virgin Money and Skipton Building Society are halting deals for new customers
    • Halifax is removing mortgage products that come with a fee from Wednesday
    • Bank of Ireland is withdrawing all residential and buy-to-let rates

Yorkshire Building Society said: “As a result of the current volatile market conditions, we will be temporarily withdrawing our range of mortgages for new customers at 8pm tonight.

“All applications submitted prior to this will continue as normal.”

Virgin Money and Skipton Building Society also said applications that have been submitted will proceed.

Halifax said from Wednesday it would remove mortgage products that come with a fee “as a result of significant changes in mortgage market pricing we’ve seen over recent weeks”.

Mortgage deals that have product fees can result in lower monthly repayments for homeowners, with the fee being added to the total mortgage debt. The overall cost of the loan will be higher due to more interest accruing over time.

  • 70% of the current squad will make World Cup list – Otto Addo confirms

Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo has confirmed that the majority of the 29-man squad announced for the September international break will make the final squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

In an interview with Greman newspaper, BILD, the German trainer hinted that he is nearly finished with his squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Otto Addo stated that 70% of the players he called for the international break will make the final list, while the remaining 30% will be decided on a ‘tight decision.’

“70 percent of the players currently on international duty with Ghana’s squad who meet Nicaragua in Lorca, Spain on Tuesday will be in Qatar,” Addo told Bild.

“The remaining 30 percent will be tight decisions. We’re watching the players closely for the next few games to see who could play for Qatar in October,” he added.

Ghana will conclude their international break with a friendly against Nicaragua on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at 18:00 GMT at Estadio Francisco Artés Carrasco in Spain.

  • Is Finland’s Wood City the future of building?

It smells like a lush pine forest in the lunch room of a new upper secondary school in Helsinki, but there’s no scented air freshener.

Instead, most of the five-storey building has been constructed out of wood.

The school won’t be completed until next year, although smooth wooden panels already line many of the interior walls. Wood has also been used in load-bearing structures, to support the ceilings between the floors, and as cladding on the exterior.

“It’s a more sustainable choice,” says Miimu Airaksinen, an engineer and vice president of development at SRV, the Finnish construction company behind the school.

“But we’re also working with wood because wood is a nice material, people appreciate and like wood and the design of wood.”

The project is part of a growing trend in the Finnish building industry. Developers are increasingly swapping out more mainstream materials like concrete and steel, in favour of wood. It’s linked to the country’s ambitious efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035 and become Europe’s leading circular economy.

With three-quarters of land in Finland covered by forests, wood is a readily available material here, although it does need to be strengthened for use in mid-rise and tall buildings.

Miimu Airaksinen, an engineer and vice president of development at SRVImage source, Maddy Savage
Image caption, Wood is practical and aesthetically pleasing, says engineer Miimu Airaksinen

In Finland, where detached wooden villas and summer cottages are common, there is less public concern about fires than there might be in parts of the world that are less used to using wood as a construction material.

However, SRV still faces questions about flammability, especially in taller buildings. There is plenty of evidence that CLT performs well in fires though, says Ms Airaksinen, since it is designed to withstand high heat levels and can be slower to collapse compared to concrete.

At the upper school construction site, Ms Airaksinen’s team are busy slicing up slabs of engineered wood called CLT (cross-laminated timber) which is produced by bonding together layers of wooden panels at right angles. “You’re making the wood stiffer, so that makes the wood much stronger,” she explains.

Engineered wood like CLT has a range of environmental benefits, including being much lighter than many building materials, so less heavy machinery and energy is needed during construction. Buildings can also be quicker to complete since there is no drying phase as there is with concrete.

Plus, wooden buildings actually remove more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than they emit; they can hold in carbon that is absorbed from the atmosphere by trees for five to six decades. By contrast, steel and concrete leave massive carbon footprints.

“It can really help us with climate change,” says Ali Amiri, a sustainable buildings researcher at Aalto University near Helsinki, and a former civil engineer.

“If we go through the comparison with wooden buildings and other buildings like concrete or steel or even brick buildings, [wood has] something like 20 to even 30% lower greenhouse gas emissions. So this is very good news.”

Ali Amiri, a former civil engineer turned sustainable buildings researcher at Aalto University near Helsinki.Image source, Maddy Savage
Image caption, Using more wood can significantly cut the carbon footprint of a new building, says Ali Amiri

According to his team’s research, if 80% of new residential buildings in Europe were made of wood they could store up to 55 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. That is equivalent to almost half the yearly emissions made by the continent’s cement industry.

Engineered woods like CLT have been used in Europe since the 1990s, but they have had a resurgence in Finland thanks to a government-backed wood-building programme designed to ensure 45% of public buildings use wood as a key material by 2025. Developers can apply for grants and get help with tasks such as procurement and risk communication. “I think every company [here] is doing wooden buildings today,” says Ms Airaksinen. “The pressure is on for sustainability.”

At the upper secondary school, gypsum board, which is made from limestone and not flammable, is used to add an extra layer of protection on the interior walls on higher floors. “We need to take fire safety seriously,” says Ms Airaksinen. “We also did a lot of simulation about evacuation and durability in case there will be a fire.”

The wooden trend is catching on in the private sector too. Data from the Federation of the Finnish Woodworking Industries suggests it is already a key material in 4% of apartments and 16% of commercial buildings.

In Helsinki city centre there’s even a new neighbourhood, Wood City, with hundreds of new wooden flats.

It is also home to the headquarters of Finnish gaming giant Supercell, where huge carved wooden characters and dramatic curved panels make for an impactful reception area, and wood lines the walls of eight storeys of open-plan office space, cafes and even nap rooms.

Cybersecurity company WithSecure is in the process of building a new office next door, in collaboration with SRV and Stora Enso, a major Finnish producer of engineered wood.

And, perhaps least surprisingly, in a country where people famously love getting sweaty, one of Helsinki’s most popular leisure attractions is a giant wooden sauna and restaurant complex. Opened in 2016, the Löyly complex has won multiple global awards for its striking wooden cloak-like structure, which allows visitors to climb up its sloping roof.

Löyly sauna complexImage source, Maddy Savage
Image caption, The Löyly sauna complex is one of Helsinki’s most popular leisure spots

Environmental campaign groups such as WWF have raised concerns that increasing the construction of wooden buildings could put too much pressure on the planet’s forests.

“From a climate perspective it is a good way to store carbon, but on the other hand we are increasing the overall level of consumption of natural resources,” says Mai Suominen, a leading forest expert for WWF. “Because obviously we do need other wood-based products as well, such as paper or packing material, [and] if we plan to increase other production, we are increasing the level of cutting.”

Finland’s wood production companies have committed to replanting logged areas in a sensitive and sustainable way. However, Ms Suominen argues that there is still a risk of lower biodiversity if production ramps up in future, which could have an impact on both animals and humans.

“Then the forest processes, at some point they collapse and they are not as flexible to responding to changing environmental conditions caused by climate change. We will face more rainfall, more drought and insect outbreaks.”

Mai Suominen in a Finnish forestImage source, Maddy Savage
Image caption, Mai Suominen warns that farming more wood will have downsides

Sustainability expert Nani Pajunen from the Finnish Innovation Fund, Sitra, agrees it is important that construction firms in Finland and beyond don’t simply jump on the bandwagon of the wooden buildings trend in an effort to appear greener.

She argues it is more important that businesses make broad assessments of the carbon footprint of their production processes, and the different life cycle potentials of materials.

For example, other recent innovations designed to improve sustainability in the sector, such as recyclable concrete and steel, might be more durable than wood in large-scale projects such as very tall apartment blocks, public venues or bridges.

“It’s not a black and white question of which [materials] are wrong and right,” she argues. “It’s about the attitude. You have to think, if you are an engineer in the construction sector, how to use materials in a more sustainable way.”

Despite the environmental concerns, the wooden buildings sector is growing, with other Nordic countries, Germany, Canada and the US in particular ramping up their production in the last couple of years.

Market research company Fortune Business Insights recently valued the CLT market at $806m (£715m) and predicted growth of 14% by 2028.

In the wake of the Ukraine war pushing up the global cost of steel and energy, Mr Amiri says his research team has also noticed a spike in enquiries from businesses and decision-makers from around the world.

While Mr Amiri predicts wooden building construction will “definitely increase” in Europe and North America in the coming years, he points out that building with engineered wood for multi-storey projects is still “a bit more expensive” than using more common materials. This, he argues, might make it harder to persuade countries with access to cheap concrete and steel to switch direction.

Back amongst the forklift trucks and diggers continuing to transform SRV’s school construction site, Ms Airaksinen says she envisages the wooden building sector increasing in tandem with the development of new low-carbon materials.

“We are focusing on building sustainable buildings and lifecycle wise buildings,” she says. “That’s the future.”

  • ADI alerts IMF, WB to channel support into Ghana’s industrialization sector

The Alliance for Development and Industrialization (ADI) is urging the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to focus their financial support for Ghana on the industrialisation sector of the economy as part of attempts to obtain a long-term solution for Ghana’s industrialization.

According to a statement released in Accra and signed by the think tank’s president, Richard Danso, the current GDP increase shows that Ghana has the basics necessary to organize and rebuild its economy.

According to the most recent data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), the economy grew by 4.8 percent of GDP.
However, by the end of the second quarter of this year, the manufacturing sector’s GDP had increased by 8.8%.

According to ADI, World Bank project support over the years has not helped enough to catapult the needed impact expected by the International Development Agencies.

“The challenge has been that private participation has been lacking and this has not helped the country to record the needed growth.”

The statement said the impact of the country’s industrialization on the economy could be achieved if all donor support is focused on industrialization and privatization which would lead to sustainable social development.

“We believe that Ghana’s dependence on cocoa should be diverted for a multi-sectorial focus, for example mango, avocado, coconut among others. Our natural resources should be processed at an affordable price to take advantage of the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement” it said.

It added that, “the cedi depreciation gives Ghana the opportunity to trigger Africa’s industrialization and export drive among member countries which would give the country the needed forex, improve our balance of payment, shore up our reserves as well as stabilize the cedi.”

“We believe that notwithstanding the cedi depreciation with its profound advantage, it needs a critical investment for the country to realize its returns” the ADI said.

Meanwhile, the Alliance called on government to strengthen financial institutions to ensure they can attract the needed investments, as well as FDI flows into the country.

It also advised government to cut down on public service expenditure by introducing private sector participation to promote good performance and efficiency.

  • How Asante Kotoko and Great Olympics trolled Hearts of Oak for sacking Samuel Boadu

Accra Hearts of Oak rivals, Accra Great Olympics and Asante Kotoko have mocked the Phobians following the dismissal of coach Samuel Boadu.

The two rivals have combined on social media to troll Hearts, who announced the dismissal of their manager on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Olympics posted a video of Ghanaian boxer Bokum Banku saying, “We are all suffering, but someone is suffering than the other. Since you said I won’t succeed, you won’t also succeed. So, in general, we are all in this suffering, but still, someone is suffering more.”

In reply, Kotoko posted a hilarious video of Ghanaian comedian Ackah Ebenezer explaining a bad situation in the Ga language.

Great Olympics are the local rivals of Hearts, who always battle with the Phobians for bragging rights in the capital.

However, Asante Kotoko are fierce rivals of Hearts of Oak and battle with them for the bragging rights as Ghana’s greatest club.

Samuel Boadu leaves after a torrid start to the Ghana Premier League 2022/23 campaign, where they are without a win in their opening three matches.

Hearts of Oak lost to Aduana Stars before drawing their games against Great Olympics and Asante Kotoko.

  • Ghana’s industrialisation efforts cannot succeed without diaspora investments – Trade Minister

Alan Kyerematen, Ghana’s Minister of Trade and Industry, has emphasized the value of contributions from Ghana’s diaspora in the country’s effort to develop an industrialized economy.

He claimed that without industrialization as part of its fundamental model and strategy and financial support from the diaspora, no nation has ever been able to successfully develop on its own.

Alan Kyerematen stated, “We are totally convinced that Ghana cannot achieve in her goal to become an industrialized country without the full support and participation of her Diaspora residents,” at an awards event hosted by the Ghana Diaspora Public Affairs Collective (GHPAC) in Washington, DC, USA.

“Beyond the remittances, you send back home to support your families, Diasporans have increasingly become a great source of capital, creativity, entrepreneurship, technology, and knowledge transfer. Diasporans have made us proud in many ways and we intend to leverage your capabilities and networks,” he added.

The Trade Minister further lauded the establishment of GHPAC as an opportunity to woo diaspora investments into Ghana to propel growth and development.

“Our strategic approach to harnessing the capabilities and network of Ghanaians in the diaspora is based on a number of considerations, including, improved the business environment; enhancing the productive capacity of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) to produce for both export and local consumption; providing fiscal and non-fiscal incentives for manufacturing; and improving access to foreign markets,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Alan Kyerematen used the occasion to express gratitude, especially to the United States for their relentless support and investment in key socio-economic initiatives undertaken in Ghana over the years.

He cited the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) as some examples of support offered by the US.

“Currently, the United States is supporting Ghana to implement a number of projects aimed at enhancing the Ghanaian private sector operators’ productive capacities to take advantage of numerous market opportunities at home and abroad,” Alan Kyerematen said.

  • Africans are yet to enjoy benefits of their oil and gas resources – Energy Minister

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Ghana’s Energy Minister, participated in a roundtable discussion at the Julia Ideson Library in Houston for the ceremonial opening of the first Houston Africa Energy Summit with Heads of State, other Ministers, and Senior Executives of international oil and gas firms.

Discussions were led by Mayor Sylvester Turner and focused on the exploration and growth of the hydrocarbon industry in Africa, the difficulties that African nations face in attracting funding and investment, and what African nations can do to entice major oil and gas companies to operate there for the benefit of both parties.

The meeting also looked at renewable power generation and various innovations including carbon capture and storage, all within the overarching context of the current energy transition.

During discussions on decarbonization, the minister remarked that Africans are yet to enjoy the benefits of their oil and gas resources, therefore as leaders, they are going to mindfully engage in cleaner ways of exploiting the hydrocarbons, with assistance from carbon capture technologies.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh also told the gathering that, the energy transition conversation presents enormous opportunities to investors within Africa’s energy value chain especially as we aim to embark on a rigorous gas monetization drive.

He narrowed this to Ghana’s current quest to see investors come and invest in E&P acreages and farm-in opportunities as well as the numerous opportunities in our power sector.

As African energy decision makers, the minister was hopeful that we shall all, in the interest of our respective citizens, derive maximum economic benefits from our God-given resources.

  • Tough days ahead but recovery is coming – Dr. Bawumia on Ghana’s economy

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia spoke about current global economic issues and how Ghana is dealing while in Kenya a few days ago to attend President Ruto’s inauguration.

In an interview with Kenyan media, Dr. Bawumia also emphasized the advantages of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), whose secretariat is Ghana, and how it will significantly contribute to the continent’s continuing economic progress.

“African trade must be independent; this is something we are really passionate about.
He told The Standard that there are several prospects and untapped potential.

When asked about the current economic situation facing Ghana specifically with high levels of inflation, Bawumia emphasised it is a problem affecting all global economies following the global pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“We are trying to deal with the issue in this context of very squeezed and tight budgets. On the monetary side, the Central Bank is trying to contain inflation through a number of interest rate increases. Ultimately, you deal with this crisis by expanding your production. If it is a food crisis, then we need to increase food production” he told KTN News in an interview.

To further lessen the burden on families in Ghana in terms of increasing living costs, Dr. Bawumia said government continues to offer free secondary school education to citizens and is exploring other ways in which it can help all Ghanaians cope with the global crisis.

“For the government, central to Ghana’s recovery is a bottom-up economic model that includes all Ghanaians from all over the country, from all backgrounds. The NPP’s ongoing digitisation agenda is an example of this strategy that is helping all Ghanaians move forward and not be left behind,” Dr Bawumia said.

The Vice President, during his time at the Bank of Ghana, helped to reduce inflation from 40 percent to just 10 percent and is now drawing on his decades of experience to help Ghana move forward and recover.

  • Man goes blind in an attempt to kill prayerful mother with ‘juju’

In Richard Ofosu Dame’s confession, he admitted to trying to kill his mother.

Richard Ofosu Dame, a prisoner, has been admitting to his bad activities while he was a free man.

He admitted trying to kill his mother, but God saved the life of the praying woman and kept her safe from her evil son, who had been setting traps for her.

According to Dame, who described his heinous acts to crimecheckghana.org, he had already executed three contracts by killing them spiritually.

He said that after being possessed by an evil spirit, he used his newfound abilities to commit crimes, including murder.

He said when he was possessed, people consulted him to do evil for them and that became his job.

Dame said the evil powers he possessed enabled him to summon people’s souls through his chants.

He indicated that he even went to Peki in the Volta Region to buy a snake, which could vomit money.

However, his mother who was against his deeds hindered his acts with her prayers.

Dame said his mother’s prayers did not sit well with him so he attempted to kill her in the same manner he had done with the other deceased individuals.

He said his attempt failed and rather got blind while he was chanting to get her mother’s soul to appear in a calabash for him to stab her. He lost his sight for two years.

“I have a small stone under my bed which I worship. A man gifted it to me. When I want to kill, I get a small doll and pins around it with a red piece of cloth. After that, I put it in a calabash containing water. When the water turns reddish in colour, then it means that the person has been killed. I used the same method to kill three. I also summon people’s souls to kill them.

“It got to a time, my mother’s prayers were obstructing my work. She advised me to stop but I refused. I wanted to take her life the same way I did with the others but it was unsuccessful. I was chanting in a bid to summon my mother’s soul. She was praying that evening and when the incantations got intense, some sort of strange wind blew over my face and that ended my sight. I went blind for two years,” he confessed.

  • Abla Pokou: The 1700s Asante female royal who sacrificed her son to save her people

She was a courageous, outspoken member of the royal family in Asanteman in the 1700s until her outspoken nature got her ousted from her people in the territory which later became known as Gold Coast and subsequently Ghana.

While little is known about her heroism in Ghana, the people of what is now known as Cote d’Ivoire celebrate and honour the memory of Abla Pokou, also because she was a daring woman.

Narrating the story of how Abla Pokou came to settle in Cote d’Ivoire and became the mother of the Baoule kingdom, Francis Tagro explained that she had a dispute over a succession during her time in the territory that is today known as Ghana but this escalated into a bitter rivalry, forcing her to flee the land to the neighbouring country.

Speaking in a BBC documentary, the curator stated that this conflict happened under the reign of the Asantehene, Osei Tutu I.

“All the Akan people living in Cote d’Ivoire are originally Asante. There was a conflict over the succession at the time of King Osei Tutu I, in what is today Ghana. During that migration, it was the last wave that was the most important, the one that led to the Baoule kingdom, and had at its head the Queen Abla Pokou,” he narrated.

Continuing the narration, Francis Tagro said that Abla Pokou and her people got to a very trying point in their journey that required an unusual sacrifice to a river god.

He explained that after several attempts, the royal had to succumb and give up her son as the perfect sacrifice – a move that saved them from damnation.

“She left with her family and during the migration, they came to a river, the Komoe River but the Akans were not strong enough swimmers. So, they asked the river god to advise them on how best to cross the river. A priest in her entourage told her that the spirit of the river was demanding a sacrifice. It had to be something valuable.

“So, they all removed their bracelets, finery, rings, every possession they had with them and offered them to the river, but the spirit refused these and insisted on them giving something that was even more valuable to them.

“The priest told them that the river demanded that Abla Pokou sacrifice the baby son she was carrying. Once they reached the other side, the people who had been in pursuit of them stopped chasing them when they saw the river and were unable to cross it. The queen them said to her people, ‘The child is dead,’ informing them that she had sacrificed her child to gain their safe passage,” he said.

Francis Tagro further explained that while this is a sad story, it has since informed the line of succession for the Baoule kingdom of Cote d’Ivoire, which was eventually set up by Abla Pokou.

“It is really sad, that is why in the Asante Kingdom in Cote d’Ivoire, the method of choosing a successor in the royal family is matrilineal because it was the mother, Abla Pokou, who gave her son so that her people could be saved. Queen Abla Pokou is a charismatic character for the Akan people. She is highly revered. She epitomizes energy and determination,” he added.

In further details shared by dw.com, Abla Pokou was the niece of King Osei Tutu and was born at the beginning of the 18th century.

She is said to have fled the country after the death of her uncle with some loyal people to Dakon, her second brother.

According to a curator at the Museum of Civilisation in Cote d’Ivoire, Tagro Gnoleba Francis, the story of this brave Asante queen, Abla Pokou, is one that is etched in the history of the people so much so that even after many centuries, her singular sacrifice of her son is still upheld.

  • IMF programme alone will not be enough to solve Ghana’s current challenges – Economist

Prof. Godfred Bokpin, an economist at the University of Ghana, has stated that the IMF program by itself will not be sufficient to address the nation’s current economic issues.

To complement the actions the nation is taking to find long-term answers to the difficulties in the country, he said that a significant constitutional change on governance should be enacted.

Prof. Bokpin noted in a citinewsroom article on September 25, 2022 that while the government can show the IMF some level of stability in order to receive financial aid, this won’t end Ghana’s difficulties in the long run.

“The IMF program in itself is not enough. You can show enough commitment to the IMF that these are the fiscal adjustments that we want to do in order to bring our debt to a more sustainable level and therefore agree to lend to the country. But with where we are right now, merely focusing on an IMF program will not be enough,” he is quoted by citinewsroom.com.

He made the comments after Ghana’s economy was further downgraded by a rating agency, Fitch Ratings on September 24, 2022, from “CCC” to “CC”.

The government has however been asked to ensure that certain reforms to the public sector are pursued.

“Ghana needs to pursue concurrently, some kind of governance reform which will also entail doing some adjustments to our constitution. Also, initiating certain productivity-enhancing reforms across the entire spectrum of the public sector will help. An inefficient public sector represents a cost to the private sector as it interacts with the private sector,” he asserted.

  • Debt restructuring must be fair to local investors – Analyst

A financial analyst, Jerome Kuseh, has urged the government to treat local investors fairly should it decide to restructure its external and domestic debt.

According to him, there is a need for the government to restructure external debts, as doing so would aid domestic investors to avoid losses in their businesses. “Now let’s say you are going to give them [local investors] a haircut, but the foreign investors who only decided to only buy your Eurobonds, they are not going to be subjected to a haircut. Where is the fairness in that situation?” “The domestic market stayed with you and kept oversubscribing, even to treasury bills. Now, these investors are going to be punished,” he is quoted by citibusinessnews.com.

The need for debt restructuring has recently arisen due to Ghana’s debt stock growing unsustainable as a result of the depreciation of the Ghana Cedi and the difficulty in obtaining loans as a consequence of downgrades by rating agencies.

Debt restructuring, a strategy adopted by business entities or individuals, happens when a debtor in financial difficulty receives a concession from a
creditor in line with a consensual agreement or a court order.

The procedure entails haggling over a lower interest rate and extending the loan’s repayment time. This approach can help debtors who are struggling to pay their bills due to numerous factors that may have posed a challenge for them to do so under the terms and conditions that have been agreed on.

The government of Ghana is expected to participate in some debt restructuring procedures as part of the country’s debt sustainability agreement with the IMF.

According to the IMF, the initiative will strengthen the legitimacy of government policies, re-establish trust in the central bank’s ability to control inflation, and build up foreign exchange reserves to sustain the local currency against adverse circumstances. However, financial experts argue that a restructuring of the country’s debt may cause a number of banks to go bankrupt suddenly.

In the meantime, former Deputy Minister of Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, has asserted that the country’s debt is unmanageable as “public debt to GDP is now about 100 percent” therefore, debt restructuring is currently the only option for the country.

  • Registrar of Companies extends deadline for auditor rotation compliance

The deadline for complying with the rules that prohibit corporations from having auditors who hold office for more than six years has been extended by the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC).

The extension will now go from August to December 31, 2022, according to a statement released by the Office on September 19.

It stated that in violation of Section 139(11) of the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992), failure to comply with the directive regarding the rotation of auditors would subject “the company, and an officer of the company, to each be liable to pay to the Registrar an administrative penalty of two hundred and fifty penalty units.”

The ORC stated that Section 139(11) notes that: “An auditor shall hold office for a term of not more than six years and is eligible for appointment after a cooling-off period of not less than six years.”

The Office explained that exceptions will however be made for companies formed for special purposes, ie; Banking and Insurance or any other businesses, which are subject to special regulation such as the Securities and Exchange Act, 2016 (Act 929).

“…And where Auditor rotation is specifically provided for, all other companies are to comply with the law immediately,” the statement explained.

  • Investment in technology critical for business growth – Kwesi Kwofie

Kwesi Kwofie, the chief executive officer of Dataware, has urged companies in Ghana to take advantage of new technology to promote company expansion.

He contends that businesses, old and new, must make investments in technology that streamlines and automates company operations.

He also stressed how business automation produces data that can be used to better understand customers and service them, allowing companies to offer personalization on a large scale.

Kwesi Kwofie highlighted in an interview with GhanaWeb Business on BizTech that investing in technology creates a foundation that enables companies to use artificial intelligence to outperform rivals in their market.

“Companies have to make investments in matured IT architecture to improve their digital infrastructure which will help them move from physical assets to digital assets”

“This is important to enable companies to transfer their data and use it to remain competitive and keep up with the consumers. Companies must begin to look into the future with data in mind because data is the future”

He further added that leveraging datasets has the potential to improve the business growth and operations of existing and upcoming businesses.

  • Insecurity crisis in Upper West could be a disincentive for investors – Security Analyst

Adib Saani, a security analyst, has raised alarm about the Upper West’s prolonged security situation and its potential economic effects.

He asserted that the current state of affairs would serve as a deterrent to investors who might otherwise be interested in making significant investments in the area, which has abundant resources and potential.

The Security Analyst advised the government to swiftly implement strict measures targeted at establishing peace and stability to the region in an interview with GhanaWeb Business.

“If the scenario remains, the major players in the mining industry, in particular, who have already invested extensively in the region and others who may be preparing to do so, may be deterred.”

“Government intervention is much required now to resolve this issue,” he added.

In the last couple of weeks, the Upper West region has been experiencing a number of violent incidents such as mob attacks, robbery, kidnapping and murder.

These acts have resulted in security among residents and non-residents in the region with security agencies expanding their presence in order to address the situation.

  • Teen mothers, adolescent girls in Volta trained in cassava flour processing

In the Volta region’s Afadzato South, Central Tongu, and Akatsi North districts, 75 teenage mothers and adolescent girls from 15 communities have received training in cassava processing.

The training was provided by BIDO Ghana, UNICEF, and NNEKA Youth Foundation.

By providing the young women with business and life skills training, the four-day event seeks to address adolescent sexual and reproductive health education and rights by assisting them in finding alternate sources of income to satisfy their basic requirements.

Mrs Fiaka Cecilia, Founder, NNEKA Youth Foundation, said the Foundation and BIDO Ghana were working to bring adolescent girls and young mothers out of poverty and become self-reliant.

Mr Sulemana Abdul Karim, the Executive Director of BIDO Ghana, said the training would add value to the lives of the young women by empowering them to seek alternative livelihoods that would help reduce the rate of school dropout and unwanted pregnancy.

Mrs Nikoi Charity, Social and Behaviour Change Officer, UNICEF Ghana, said income flow for the youth in rural areas was a major problem, adding that the programme would help keep the youth busy and bring them income to take care of themselves to abstain from sexual activities.

She said the Team would keep an eye on the young women to ensure they made good use of what they learnt to help solve the challenges they might face.

Mikel Worlator Cophy and Madam Alice Appah, the programme facilitators, were positive that the trainees would put into practice what they had been taught.

  • Ghana remains gateway to the African continent – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communications and Digitalization, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating solid alliances and developing policies for digital technologies that will propel Ghana’s socioeconomic development and establish it as the digital entryway to the African continent.

Ghana believes that the International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) cooperative platforms and the many regional and international alliances are crucial to the development of not only the African Region but also of all Member States for the benefit of everyone.

“Ghana will continue to serve the ITU community in this regard,” she added. “As we run for reelection to the Council, we are counting on your vote and support to keep Ghana as a Council member to continue tirelessly serving you.

She indicated that the creation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) with the Secretariat headquartered in Ghana was a pointer to the African Continent-wide marketing strategy powered by digitalization, adding, “We are therefore extending our digital infrastructure to our borders to enable seamless connection to our neighbors”.

Commending the Romania government for hosting the 2022 International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-2022) in Bucharest, the Hon. Minister stated that Ghana was fully committed to the strategic direction set by the ITU to ensure the universal connectivity that would propel the needed global digital transformation.

The objective of the 2022 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference was to provide the avenue for Member State parties to set the Union’s General Policy direction; Adopt the 4-year strategic and financial plans; Elect the Senior Management Team of the Union and elect the Member States of the Council.

“Closing the digital divide to facilitate equitable connectivity, which is vital to support the economic transformation of Ghana, our primary objective, “We are of the opinion that we can transform Covid19 from a global crisis to an opportunity through digital technology”, she added.

According to Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, the government has also introduced initiatives aimed at narrowing the digital divide and empowering citizens to embrace the use of ICT.

She revealed that the implementation of the Rural Telephony project had already connected over 3 million people, noting that, the previously unconnected people now had equal access to the innovations which were introduced by the Government in Ghana’s digital transformation journey under the leadership of the H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The Minister also outlined the following initiatives geared towards achieving digital inclusion for all:

    a) mobile money interoperability which has brought over 15 million previously unbanked persons onto the financial digital platform;

    b) The National Identity Card as a single purpose e ID for all digital transactions to prevent identity theft and cyber fraud.

    c) Digital skills development offered through a nationwide network of Digital Transformation Centres to benefit over 20,000 Women Entrepreneurs, Master Trainers, Youth, and Children in Coding Clubs over the past 12 months.

    d) focused interventions to reduce the gender digital divide and create opportunities for the youth through the Girls in ICT program and nurturing of new businesses at Digital Incubation Centres.

She said that the government was also taking all the prerequisite steps to ensure secure and resilient cyberspace for sustained digital transformation while bearing in mind the utilization of ITU guidelines.

“Ghana is actively promoting cybersecurity not only for our benefit but for the sub-region as a whole. Ghana’s ranking on the 2021 ITU Global Cybersecurity Index improved to 86.69%, up from 32.6% in 2017. We seek partnerships and international cooperation to do even better for our entire sub-region,” she explained.

She said “The Government of Ghana is determined to provide the necessary digital infrastructure, a conducive legal and regulatory environment, build digital capabilities to enhance the adoption and use of ICT and digital innovation, and close all digital gaps to propel our digital transformation. In pursuit of this, Ghana reiterates its commitment to working with the ITU to achieve its strategic objectives for the benefit of all ITU Member States”.

  • Ghana re-affirms position to leave no one digitally behind

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, MP, the Minister for Communications and Digitalization (MoCD), has underlined Ghana’s commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital age.

This, according to her, may be accomplished by concentrating attention on achieving the ICT-enabled sustainable development objectives and targets by 2030 within the next eight (8) years.

She said that the Ghanaian administration, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Co-Chair of the Group of Eminent Advocates for the United Nations’ SDGs, was dedicated to the international strategy of cooperating to better people’s lives all over the world through the use of technology.

“This is even more critical as the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on economies of all nations, makes it imperative for our governments to accelerate digital transformation as the key for our economic recovery,” she noted.

The Hon. Minister was speaking at a Round Table meeting today at the Ministerial Roundtable Sessions on the topic: “Building a Better Digital Future For All” at the Palace of Parliament, Human Right Hall in Bucharest, Romania.

The meeting forms part of preparations ahead of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference, 2022 and it’s scheduled for September 26 to October 14, 2022.

The Minister said Ghana has started the preparation to facilitate the expansion of digital infrastructure aimed at opening up broadband access to accelerate the provision of meaningful content and smart services that would benefit all citizens in the country.

“The bridging of the digital divide is a major concern of Government and we continue to create digital opportunities for the marginalised, the elderly, and people in rural, remote, and underserved areas under our Universal Telecommunications/ICT Fund Management”, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said.

She, therefore, stated that the government was also implementing strategic policies that would ensure inclusiveness of inculcating basic digital literacy in the educational curricula and also putting up community-based digital laboratories while being mindful that digital skills development was the cornerstone of digital transformation.

Touching on the gender technological gap, she indicated that, Ghana had prioritised digital gender equality and that women and girls were encouraged and empowered to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

“We are committed to a cross-sectoral approach to development and enhanced collaboration with the private sector to aid rapid digital transformation. The Government of Ghana continues to work towards the creation of a fair regulatory environment and stability through the development of new spectrum farming policies to encourage the private sector to roll out new generation infrastructure and provide affordable and meaningful connectivity,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said.

She emphasised the need to build confidence, trust, and security in cyberspace to promote a safe digital /ICT ecosystem.

“It was important to work with the guidelines provided by the ITU and other global cooperation networks, and also work with other neighbours to build a Regional cyberspace that would be resilient to attacks,” she added.

She noted that Ghana is committed to the global growth strategy that we have given ourselves under the guidance of the ITU to ensure that all nations pursue a path of digital transformation that will enhance meaningful universal connectivity and access.

  • Refinancing options for payment of maturing T-bills in October to face complications – Report

The government may encounter some difficulties in financing the repayment of Treasury bills that are due on October 3, 2022, according to a report by Databank Research.

This may be related to the anticipated domestic debt restructuring, the bank’s research arm highlighted in its Weekly Fixed Income update.

Myjoyonline.com states that assistance from the Bank of Ghana may be requested in order to secure more advantageous refinancing choices.

The whole maturities of the 91-day to 182-day treasury bills of GH786.6 million are anticipated to be refinanced for a total of GH905 million.

“Last week, Fitch Ratings downgraded Ghana’s Issuer Default Rating from ‘CCC’ to ‘CC’. They cited possible debt restructuring, high debt service, and constrained financing as reasons for the recent downgrade. This is expected to complicate the refinancing options of the Treasury on the maturing paper on October 3, 2022, as pricing for a refinancing offer will likely be unfavorable,” parts of the report quoted by myjoyonline.com revealed on September 27, 2022.

The government is expected to offer ¢905 million across the 91-day to 182-day bills to refinance total maturities worth.

The report also projected that investors may maintain interest in short-term securities in the secondary market.

“We expect investors to focus on T-bills in the primary market. Investors may also be on the lookout for a bond offering to refinance the maturing paper on October 3, 2022. We expect investors to maintain interest in near-term maturities in the secondary market,” it added.

Treasury bills undersubscribed for the first time in almost 4 months

Treasury bills subscription for the past week was undersubscribed by almost 10 percent for the first time in almost 4 months.

The under subscription is a big deviation from the recent trajectory where T-bills have been over-subscribed.
Interests on T- bills have been on the upward trajectory in recent times with the 91-day T-Bill posting a 30% interest per anum, from 29.90% the previous week while the 182-day bill moved from above 31% to 31.34%.

However, out of a target of ¢1.33 billion cedis government secured ¢1.19 billion from the sale of the short-term securities.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s creditworthiness status has been further downgraded to junk status from CCC to CC by Fitch on September 23, 2022.

Even though the sale of the Treasury bills took place on the same day as the downgrade, it cannot be firmly established that the downgrade was the reason for the under-subscription.

But whether or not the downgrade can have further repercussions on government securities and/or bonds, is a possibility worth exploring.

Fitch’s downgrade meant that the likelihood of the government defaulting on its loans is high, a situation that sends a bad signal to the investor community.

Government must as a matter of urgency finalize negotiations with the International Monetary Fund to restore investor confidence in the economy.

  • London Luton Airport: Inquiry begins into expansion plans

A public inquiry has begun into London Luton Airport’s expansion plans.

Luton Borough Council, whose company Luton Rising owns the airport, approved the growth plans in December.

The separate private company that runs the airport, London Luton Airport Operations Limited (LLAOL), applied to increase passenger capacities from 18 million to 19 million per year and to amend the noise contours.

The government said an inquiry should review the main aspects of development.

Three inspectors are expected to participate during the inquiry, Richard Clegg, Sheila Holden and Geoff Underwood, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

A pre-inquiry meeting was held by the inspectors in the Council Chamber at Luton Town Hall in July to outline the management of the process.

The agenda included seven areas they considered to be the main aspects of the application, which were air quality, climate change, the impact of noise, sustainability, socio-economic implications, the influence of other considerations on the overall planning balance, and whether it would be consistent with the local development plan and other policies.

Environmental campaigners were concerned about the role of the council in granting planning permission.

Local protest group Luton and District Association for the Control of Aircraft Noise (LADACAN) said it was pleased there would be an inquiry.

Earlier this year, Andrew Lambourne from LADACAN, said: “We’re really grateful for the support from local MPs, councils and other groups in helping to get this decision called in.

“We expect the hearings to shine some uncomfortable light on how the borough council and the airport failed to ensure the required balance between growth and mitigation, apparently focusing on maximising revenues instead.”

A spokesman for LLAOL previously said it respected the government’s request for the application to undergo further examination.

“Our project enables us to put the airport on the best possible footing for a long-term recovery which supports the local economy and creates jobs, after the worst crisis our industry has ever faced,” he said.

“This plan is consistent with our commitment to achieve carbon neutrality for our own operations by 2026 and to achieve net zero emissions by 2040.”

  • How far can income tax rates diverge?

    • The diverging approach to tax, following Kwasi Kwarteng‘s mini-budget, raises questions for the Scottish government – about how much it could lose in revenue if that gap widens further.
    • “Behavioural effects” by high earners seeking to minimise their tax bills can backfire on a finance minister who wants to raise revenue from the highest earners.

If you’re earning more than £150,000… first of all, that’s very nice for you. But there’s going to be quite a big gap between the tax rate you’ll pay on your earnings to Westminster, and the rate you might pay if you’re classified as a Scottish income tax payer.

Each marginal pound over that level will bring you a bill of 46p from the Scottish government, while Kwasi Kwarteng, the new chancellor, is asking for 40p from next April. So, which would you prefer to pay?

If, let’s say, your earnings are £250,000 a year, you’ll pay just over £101,000 in Scottish income tax. Unless there are further changes, from next April, that will be £9,046 more than you would pay for the same earnings in England.

For that, you’ll get higher public spending per head (which ought to mean a higher quality), free university tuition fees, a more generous level of support for elderly care, free prescription, eye tests, and so on.

So you may reckon that it’s money well spent, or that it’s a part of the social contract that you ought to support, as life has been financially rather kind to you.

    Tax net

Or you may take a different view – that the money you earn is yours, and you should do what it takes to minimise the amount you hand over to His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

You have a higher incentive to lower your tax bill than lower earners, and you can probably afford a clever accountant.

So what can you do to avoid that higher Scottish tax bill? Well, you could move to England. But if the £9,000 is the tax gap you’re facing, that’s unlikely to cover your bill for removers. And although prices vary, England’s average house price is substantially higher than Scotland’s.

Or you could stay where you are and your accountant could transfer your earnings so that they’re caught in the Westminster tax net.

If you own a business, you can take your pay in dividends instead of a salary. Dividend tax is paid at the rate set by Kwasi Kwarteng – all of it, not just at the margins.

That means a big loss in revenue to the Scottish government.

    Fat cats

We’re talking here about someone who is exceptionally well off, in the top 0.6% of Scottish taxpayers, and who is currently living in Scotland.

What about someone thinking of moving to Scotland? Let’s say, someone who is earning a bit less, and doing a job that we highly value. A doctor, for instance. The whole of the UK needs more of them, so they can choose where they locate.

If that consultant is on £100,000 annual earnings, they will pay £2,420 more income tax next year by taking a job in Scotland rather than south of the border.

    Image caption,

A consultant earning £100,000 a year will pay £2,420 more income tax next year by taking a job in Scotland rather than England

Not such a bad deal when you consider the advantages. But that’s just year one: you’ll have to make a judgement on whether that gap is going to widen. And then, there’s the tax on buying a house.

Let’s suppose this doctor wants to get a home that fits the status, costing £750,000 (in Edinburgh, Glasgow and some nearby suburbs, that doesn’t buy as much as you might think). The transactions tax or stamp duty for that in England has just been cut to £25,000, while in Scotland, it’s £48,350.

If that doctor already owns a house and doesn’t want to sell it, for whatever reason, the tax on buying that additional home in Scotland will be £78,350.

This is not to get any sympathy for high earners facing big tax bills. It’s to set out the issues as they see them. And as they include doctors, they can’t all be caricatured as fat cats.

    Working from home

We’re talking here about “behavioural effects” of diverging tax regimes. Where people can move freely, as they can in a nation state such as the UK or USA, different tax rates provide an incentive to move. And the more you earn, the higher incentive.

We don’t know how big the effect will be in the UK, because we’re new to this. In the US, you can see over a long period the effect of low tax New Hampshire increasing its population on the border with higher tax Massachusetts, within commuting distance of Boston.

For decades there has been a move from the northern, higher-tax rust belt to the southern, lower-tax sunbelt. Some of that is for the quality of life, but not all.

That long-term effect has been speeded up by Covid, the shift to working from home, and increasingly working a long way from your office.

There is now tax competition similar to the appeals to corporates, wishing to bring these “digital natives” to pay low tax rates in attractive places to live.

CNBC reports that of the five US states with the biggest out-migration, four are seen as “high tax”. And if the response to losing the high-earning tax base is to increase taxes more to protect public services, it cites concerns that the trend will only accelerate.

    Priorities diverge

So how will these “behavioural effects” play out with divergent tax regimes in Scotland and the rest of the UK?

The Scottish Fiscal Commission had a go at estimating the effect when the Scottish government chose to put an extra penny on three of its five tax bands.

For those earning more than £150,000, the 45% rate went up to 46% in Scotland, and the “higher rate”, now kicking in just above £43,000, went up to 41% instead of the nearest equivalent Treasury rate of 40%.

The higher rate was reckoned to bring in £115m more by this year, if nothing else changed. But things do change, and assuming five years of behavioural effects, the Fiscal Commission reckoned there would be a loss of £27m in the higher rate bracket, so a net gain of £88m.

    MoneyImage source, PA Media
    Image caption,

The mystery man, from the Wakefield area, asked for his name and address to be kept secret

The additional rate earners showed behavioural effects to be strongest. The fiscal commission, which produces the figures the Scottish government must work with, reckoned on an increase in revenue, if nothing else changed, of £35m by this year.

But if behaviour does change in ways that these public finance experts assume it would, they would reduce income by £32m, leaving only £3m net gain.

That was for a gap of one penny in the pound on earnings above £150,000. Assuming the Scottish government does not choose to match Kwasi Kwarteng’s abolition of that additional rate of tax (meaning his marginal rate falls from 45p to 40p – the higher rate), you could reasonably guess that the behavioural effect will mean the 46p rate is negative.

It doesn’t take many such people to make a big difference. There are somewhere around 20,000 people who are above the £150,000 threshold for additional rate tax. The figures for 2019-20 show they paid one pound in every six of Scottish income tax revenue. The UK is unusually dependent on such high earners for its income tax revenue – the Treasury moreso than Holyrood.

So while the Scottish government can be clear that any future tax cuts are unlikely to favour the highest earners, because its priorities diverge from those of the new occupants of Downing Street, it can’t ignore the risk to revenue if it creates incentives for those high earners to take themselves or their earnings out of Scotland.

  • Energy firms must offer more help on bill payments, Ofgem warns

Most of the UK’s energy suppliers must improve how they help people who are struggling to pay their bills, watchdog Ofgem has said.

Its review found failures in firms being able to identify which customers were having payment difficulties and a lack of help with payment plans.

The government has stepped in to cap a typical household energy bill at £2,500 a year until 2024 but this is still unaffordable for many customers.

This bill rise comes in on 1 October.

Campaigners have warned millions of people will still face fuel poverty this winter, despite Prime Minister Liz Truss‘ multi-billion pound plan to ease the impact of higher gas and electricity bills.

A household is considered to be in fuel poverty if it has to spend 10% or more of its income on energy.

If you are struggling to afford your gas and electricity bills, Citizens Advice recommends contacting your supplier directly and offering to come up with a payment plan.

Energy suppliers must offer payment plans that customers can afford, under Ofgem rules. In addition, those on pre-payment meters who do not have the money to top them up can ask for emergency credit.

Citizens Advice said that by the end of August its frontline staff had supported more than 15,000 people who were unable to top up their prepayment meter.

The charity’s chief executive, Dame Clare Moriarty, said Ofgem’s review showed some energy companies were “falling drastically short of the mark”.

“This is utterly unacceptable given the huge cost-of-living pressures people are facing,” she said. “Suppliers need to up their game and Ofgem needs to hold them to task.”

Ofgem chief executive Jonathan Brearley said its review found some suppliers had fallen short of the standards expected by the watchdog and urged them to “step up”.

“Although the government’s package of support will provide some welcome relief, it’s critical that, going into this tough winter, energy companies prioritise the needs of vulnerable customers struggling to pay their bills,” he said.

All the energy companies identified have been asked to submit information to Ofgem to set out how they will improve their service.

Ofgem said it had already issued provisional orders to Utilita and ScottishPower, meaning they must take specific and urgent actions.

A ScottishPower spokesperson said: “We’re disappointed that all of the effort our staff make to help our customers manage affordability challenges has resulted in this conclusion from Ofgem.

“We will now work with Ofgem to implement their recommendations.”

A Utilita spokesperson said the company was “very disappointed” about Ofgem’s “decision to issue a provisional order rather than to engage with us”.

“Our staff are deeply committed to helping customers through the cost-of-living crisis and the financial support we offer is extensive: In 2022 alone, we will provide financial assistance more than a million times to customers who need our help,” it added.

  • Aldi boss: Shoppers are switching in their droves

The boss of Aldi has said customers are switching to the discounter “in droves” as the cost of living crisis continues to hit struggling households.

Aldi has gained more than 1.5 million customers in 12 weeks, UK chief executive Giles Hurley told the BBC.

The discounter has recently overtaken Morrisons to become the fourth biggest supermarket in the UK.

Rival discounter Lidl has also been gaining ground as shoppers seek to lower their bills.

There has been an “unprecedented” change in consumer behaviour as inflation has soared, Mr Hurley said.

“We’re seeing customers switch in their droves,” he said. “Customers are prioritising value like never before and switching their shopping to Aldi.”

Mr Hurley said shoppers from “all of the traditional full-price supermarkets” were coming to Aldi.

According to the retail research firm Kantar, sales at Aldi were up 19% for the 12 weeks to September compared with the same time last year. If it keeps growing at this rate, it will add up to an extra billion or so pounds in sales this year.

“We haven’t seen growth rates like this since the last recession,” said Mr Hurley, referring to the recession in 2008-2009.

Rival discounter Lidl is also seeing a rapid increase in sales.

Both businesses are still opening new stores, which is driving extra sales. Prices are also rising, which pushes up the value of sales.

But Mr Hurley insists that Aldi’s popularity is broad-based.

“There’s no doubt that some of our sales can be apportioned to new stores,” he says.

“But the majority are coming from within the existing business as customers reappraise their search for value. It’s not just about new shoppers, it’s also about existing shoppers consolidating their shop at Aldi, and using Aldi as a first-stop shop.”

    Bargain hunting

Consumers are buying fewer big brands and putting cheaper own-label products in their shopping baskets instead.

According to retail research firm, Kantar, private label ranges now account for 51% of the market, compared to branded products.

Sales of the cheapest own label ranges are up by a third on last year.

More than 90% of products at Aldi are non-branded items.

csays the business is seeing growth across all categories, from a 20% increase in sales of its nappy range to a 29% rise in its premium Specially Selected range in the last three months.

Mr Hurley was speaking as the chain released its results for the last financial year covering the twelve months to the end of December 2021.

Aldi only racked up a small increase in sales compared with the previous year with revenues of £13.6bn, as it missed out on the online grocery boom during the pandemic.

Pre-tax profits fell by 87% to £36m. That’s a net profit margin of less than a third of 1%.

Aldi says the fall was down to Covid costs, increasing staff pay and investing in prices.

Aldi is a privately-owned business, something which Mr Hurley says gives it a big advantage.

“We can look very much to the long term and not worry about short term results.”

Like Lidl, the chain is part of a much bigger German-owned retailer. Both discounters are still expanding, unlike traditional supermarkets which are adding little, if any, new space.

Selling supermarket food is a highly competitive market, an industry that’s driven by volume and market share.

“The bigger your sales, the more you can invest in your pricing and the better deals you can, in turn, get from your suppliers,” says Duncan Brewer, head of the retail and consumer products strategy team at EY-Parthenon

“It’s that flywheel effect. And of course, if your volume falls, the trickier things can quickly get. The grocery pie isn’t getting any bigger so for the main supermarkets it’s all about taking someone else’s slice.”

Aldi now has just over 970 stores. It’s planning to open another 16 before the end of the year, with a target of hitting 1,200 stores by 2025.

It may be piling on shoppers, but Adam Leyland, editor-in-chief of the Grocer magazine, says Aldi isn’t going to get things all its own way.

This is unlike during the financial crisis, when the big four chains raised prices too much, allowing the discounters to steal a march and begin their breakneck expansion.

“Pricing is far more nuanced than it used to be,” he said. “It’s not straightforward. All the established players have developed their entry-level ranges to be more competitive, with some price matching against the discounters on hundreds of lines.

“To maintain a price gap, discounter prices are around 15% cheaper than in continental Europe. It shows they’re having to work a lot harder,” Mr Leyland added.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s have been price-matching Aldi on key products.

Asda has recently launched a revamped basic range, Just Essentials, and had to put a temporary limit on the number of products customers can buy to keep up with demand.

Aldi’s big rivals are determined not to make the same mistakes again, but the cost pressures are enormous for every supermarket. Food prices on the shelves are rising at their fastest rate in more than a decade.

Mr Hurley wouldn’t be drawn on how much more food price inflation is still to come, saying that the last few years had taught him it was “very, very difficult to predict the future.”

Aldi’s more efficient business model, he claimed, is better placed to insulate customers from rising prices right across the food supply chain.

So how much profit margin is Aldi prepared to sacrifice this year to protect shoppers?

“We always make value the cornerstone of our business. No matter what it takes,” says Mr Hurley, a sign that he’s determined to keep the pressure on.

  • TikTok may be fined £27m for failing to protect children

TikTok could face a £27m fine for failing to protect children’s privacy when they’re using the platform.

The UK’s Information Commissioner‘s Office (ICO) found the video-sharing platform may have processed the data of under-13s without appropriate consent.

The watchdog said the breach happened over more than two years – until July 2020 – but that it had not yet drawn final conclusions.

TikTok says it disputes the findings, noting that they are “provisional”.

The ICO has issued TikTok Inc and TikTok Information Technologies UK Limited with a “notice of intent” – a legal document which precedes a potential fine.

The notice sets out the ICO’s provisional view that TikTok breached UK data protection law between May 2018 and July 2020.

The ICO investigation found the social platform may have:

    • processed the data of children under the age of 13 without appropriate parental consent
    • failed to provide proper information to its users in a concise, transparent and easily understood way
    • processed special category data, without legal grounds to do so

According to Ofcom, 44% of eight to 12-year-olds in the UK use TikTok, despite its policies forbidding under-13s on the platform.

Information Commissioner John Edwards said: “We all want children to be able to learn and experience the digital world, but with proper data privacy protections.

“Companies providing digital services have a legal duty to put those protections in place, but our provisional view is that TikTok fell short of meeting that requirement.”

TikTok has rolled out a number of features to strengthen the privacy and safety on the site – including allowing parents to link their accounts to their children’s, and disabling direct messaging for under-16s.

But Mr Edwards continued: “I’ve been clear that our work to better protect children online involves working with organisations, but will also involve enforcement action where necessary.

“In addition to this, we are currently looking into how over 50 different online services are conforming with the Children’s Code, and have six ongoing investigations looking into companies providing digital services who haven’t, in our initial view, taken their responsibilities around child safety seriously enough.”

Rolled out in September last year, the Children’s Code put in place new data protection codes of practice for online services likely to be accessed by children, built on existing data protection laws, with financial penalties a possibility for serious breaches.

The ICO said its findings in the notice were provisional, with no conclusion to be drawn at this stage that there had been any breach of data protection law.

It added: “We will carefully consider any representations from TikTok before taking a final decision.”

A TikTok spokesperson said: “This notice of intent, covering the period May 2018-July 2020, is provisional and as the ICO itself has stated, no final conclusions can be drawn at this time.

“While we respect the ICO’s role in safeguarding privacy in the UK, we disagree with the preliminary views expressed and intend to formally respond to the ICO in due course.”

    Previous action

In 2019, the firm was given a record $5.7m fine by the Federal Trade Commission, for mishandling children’s data.

It has also been fined in South Korea for similar reasons.

In July, the US Senate Commerce Committee voted to approve a measure that would raise the age that children were given special online privacy protections to 16, and prohibit targeted advertising to children without consent.

  • Irish budget: Finance minister unveils tax ‘giveaways’

The Irish finance minister has unveiled one of the biggest giveaway budgets in the country’s history.

Paschal Donohoe told the Dáil (Irish parliament) that he was in a position to do so because the country had a large budget surplus.

Most of that comes from a huge increased tax-take from corporations, particularly a small number of American tech companies.

Some of that income is to go towards a “rainy day” national reserve fund.

Mr Donohoe announced an income tax package to the value of more than €1.1bn (£963m).

Unlike the UK, Ireland is not borrowing to fund tax cuts.

The minister said his budget was focused on helping families and businesses facing the cost-of-living crisis arising from after effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

People will now start paying the higher 40% rate of tax on income over €40,000 (£35,731).

Tax credits will be given to home owners for fuel and tax on petrol and diesel at the pump will remain unchanged.

A packet of 20 cigarettes will go up by 50 cents (45p).

Mr Donohoe also announced that VAT on newspapers would be reduced from 9% to 0%.

He said there were many risks to the country’s finances but he concluded: “We can and should be confident about our future.”
