  • ‘Your roads will be fixed soon’ – Tarkwa-Nsuaem MP to TARSCO

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Mr George Mireku Duker has assured that the reconstruction of roads around the Tarkwa Senior High School (TARSCO) will soon be completed.

He gave the assurance at the launch of the 60th Anniversary of TARSCO in Accra on Wednesday, August 31, 2022.

The 60 years Anniversary and fundraising of the Tarkwa Senior High School (TARSCO) was launched on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 in Accra.

The theme for the Anniversary was,”Achieving Academic Excellence Through Discipline for National Development”.

At the event, the 60th Anniversary new dining hall project was unveiled.

The dining hall will accommodate about 3000 students at a go when completed.

The 60th Anniversary cloth was also unveiled.

The Paramount Chief of Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, Tetrete Okuamoa Sekyim and some dignitaries launched the 60th anniversary.

Speaking at the event, Mr George Mireku Duker said although the construction of the road has started, the contractor could not complete it earlier due to some challenges.

However, he said the contractor assured him that the project will be completed in November, assuring the school that by that time, they will have their roads tarred.

Although he is not an old student of TARSCO, he noted that at his Alma Mata which is Adisadel College, the old students took it upon themselves to build infrastructure and support the school and that has contributed to its current state.

Mr George Mireku Duker therefore encouraged the Tarkwa Past Students Association (TARPSA) to emulate same, in order to uplift the school to the preferred standard.

As the Tarkwa-Nsuaem MP, he noted TARSCO placed about 11th on the league and expressed worry over their performance.

He therefore urged the students to do more so that they can place first on the table during the next West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

  • Zelensky urges IAEA to call for Zaporizhzhia demilitarisation

Let’s hear from Ukraine‘s President Volodymyr Zelensky who, in his nightly address, welcomed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s arrival at Zaporizhzhia – but called for swifter action from the agency.

Zelensky said it was “good” UN experts had made their first inspection of the nuclear power plant – “despite provocations by the Russian military” – before countering it was “bad that we have not yet heard the appropriate calls from the IAEA”.

Referring to a meeting he’d had with agency chief Rafael Grossi in Kyiv beforehand, the Ukrainian leader said the pair “clearly” agreed a need for “demilitarisation and full control by Ukrainian nuclear specialists” of Zaporizhzhia.

In the address, posted to Telegram, he also called out the agency for failing to allow “independent journalists” to accompany and document the mission – something he claimed was also pre-agreed.

Despite this, he said Ukraine was “hopeful” the mission would draw “objective” conclusions, adding:

Quote Message: When the Russian military finally… take away their weapons, ammunition, when they stop shelling neighbouring areas and cease their provocations, the Zaporizhzhia plant will be able to return to a completely safe functioning, which has always been the case under the control of Ukraine.” from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

  • Gun jams during bid to kill Argentina vice-president

Argentina’s Vice-President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has narrowly avoided assassination after a gunman’s weapon jammed as he aimed at her.

Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was greeting supporters outside her home when a man emerged from the crowd and pointed a handgun in her face.

President Alberto Fernandez said the gun was loaded with five bullets but failed to fire when triggered.

Ms Fernández de Kirchner is involved in a corruption trial and was returning from court. She denies the charges.

Police said the gunman, who local media identified as a 35-year-old Brazilian man, has been taken into custody. They are attempting to establish a motive for the attack.

Addressing the nation late on Thursday night, Mr Fernandez said: “Cristina remains alive because, for a reason not yet technically confirmed, the gun, which contained five bullets, did not fire.”

He went on to condemn the attacker and said the attempt on Ms de Kirchner’s life was one of the “most serious” incidents since the country returned to democracy in 1983.

“We can disagree, we can have deep disagreements, but hate speech cannot take place because it breeds violence and there is no chance of violence coexisting with democracy,” Mr Fernandez said.

He also declared a national holiday on Friday to allow Argentines time to “express themselves in defence of life, democracy and in solidarity with our vice president”.

Footage shared on local media showed the man aiming a gun inches away from her head and appearing to attempt a shot. She then lowers her head but no shots were fired.

  • If we reject “monecracy,” NPP can win the 2024 elections – Prof. Oquaye

Former Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye outlined the ideal strategy for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prevail in the 2024 elections and other future elections.

Ghanaians will always ask them to form the government of the day, he claimed, if leadership and the rank and file remained true to the traditions on which the party was founded and, more significantly, shunned “monecracy.”

The term “monecracy” refers to a system in which party positions are won primarily based on financial gains.
It became a hot topic during the most recent National Delegates Conference, which resulted in the present national leadership.

Party members must shun ‘monecracy’ and instead stick religiously to the tenets of truth, fearlessness, critique, and hard work.

“…We would want to resolve that we will follow not after ‘monecracy’ but we will follow the principles and tenets of the tradition. The tradition of truth, fearlessness, critique, working hard by principle and by valour.

“If we do that, Ghanaians would repeatedly come and knock at our door in order to invite our government to take over the reins of governance in this country,” Prof. Oquaye submitted.

He spoke at the August 31, 2022 launch of a book in honour of the late Baffour Osei Akoto, a celebrated statesman and astute politician, in Accra.

The book, “Baffour Osei Akoto: A royal Patriot and the making of Ghana,” is a collection of speeches and articles by famous speakers about the exploits of the late Baffour Akoto.

Prof. Oquaye, a co-editor of the book, said it was fair and honourable that NPP’s rank and file emulated the ideals and principles that the late Osei Akoto ‘a man of valour’ espoused.

“If we (NPP) do otherwise, we will not be honouring those men of valour like Akoto, Danquah, Busia, Dombo and others,” he said.

  • For the over GH178K BOST deal, the contractor utilized three entities to submit bids

The Auditor General has determined that three businesses with the same owner submitted bids for the contract to install LED street lights and bulbs.

Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited, or BOST, granted the contract.

The following businesses were involved, according to the 2021 Auditor-General Report on Public Accounts of Ghana—Public Boards, Corporations, and Other Statutory Institutions, which was sent to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin:
Dass-B Electricals, Precious Engineering, and Unity Engineering Co.

BOST, the report said, eventually awarded the contract to Enginmac Co. Ltd at a cost of GH¢178,252.52.

“We noted that three (3) Companies, Unity Enginmac Co. Precious Engineering and Dass-B Electricals bided for the award of contract for the installation of LED bulbs and streetlights for BOST of which Enginmac Co was recommended by the evaluation team for the award of the contract to the tune of GH¢178,252.52.

“We noted further that, Unity Enginmac Co. Ltd and the two other alternative tenderers namely Precious Engineering and Dass-B Electricals who participated in the procurement were all owned by one person.

“We recommended that the contractor be invited to explain the ownership of the companies and tender documents submitted and admonish the evaluation team to do proper due diligence in the selection process as this lapse was identified in the previous year audit and cautioned,” page 16 of the report read.

The Auditor-General noted that “BOST continues to pay avoidable judgment debts in the forms of cost and interest amounting to GH¢9,169,884.48 and US$3,057,096.00 to three contractors for breach of contract and undue delays in the payment of legitimate contract sums.

“We recommended that should Management apply appropriate sanctions on all officers whose negligence have occasioned the loss. Additionally, we urged Management to heed to all contract terms and indulge in negotiations rather than lawsuit in resolving disagreements.”

  • Bawumia’s installation by Akufo-Addo won’t succeed – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a former deputy minister of communications in the former John Mahama NDC administration, has criticized President Akufo-Addo, Dr. Bawumia, and other top government officials for what he calls the selection of “puppets to cover up the disaster” of government.

In his time on the panel during Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana program, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu referred to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President, as a “puppet” that President Akufo-Addo intends to install to hide his mess.

The innuendos from the adviser to the former president Mahama did not spare the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

“His cousin, the Finance Minister has run this economy aground. Alhaji Bawumia, the puppet that he [President Akufo-Addo] wants to install has run the economy aground,” he said.

Noticing that the host, Randy Abbey looked unconcerned about Felix’s strong choice of words, his co-panellist, Dr. Okoe Boye interjected and called his attention to the description of Dr. Bawumia as a “puppet” but adamant Felix will have none of that, saying that there were occasions in the past when “the NPP sponsored adverts to describe President Mills as a “puppet”, and that his use of the word was in the context of President Akufo-Addo wanting people he can easily control.

“He [President Akufo-Addo] can also install all puppets in all state institutions, the people who make the difference are the 17 million people who will be voting, not the puppets he has installed,” Felix Kwakye Ofosu added.

  • Allotey slams A-G for naming judges who purchased cars

Nineteen (19) former and present judges of Ghana’s superior courts have received citations from the Auditor General for purchasing public vehicles in violation of Regulation 158 of the Public Financial Management Regulations 2019. (L.I. 2378).

According to the rule, the principal spending officer of a covered entity is required to get the Minister’s written consent before transferring, exchanging, selling, donating, providing a contribution in kind, placing a vehicle in trust, or doing any other type of disposal.

The AG’s report states that 19 vehicles were “auctioned by the Service for GH¢1,023,507.96 without approval from the Minister of Finance” and recommended that the auction should be annulled.

“In the absence of approval from the Minister for Finance, we recommended that the auction should be nullified, and the vehicles recovered.”

But social commentator, Bernard Allotey Jacobs has fired salvoes at the A-G for taking on the Judges.

According to him, what the AG did is not good, stressing “in every rule, there are exceptions”.

Claiming the AG failed to conduct himself appropriately in respect of this issue, he asked; “How can the Auditor-General do that? . . . Have you written to the Judges asking them of their opinion on the issue of how these Land Cruisers were sold to them?”

“The reason is that all the previous administrations auction them. It’s like it is now become different that they slip it or give it to the press to publish without even asking for the consent of the Judges. It is not fine! . . . We are not doing this country well!!”, he asserted.

“You didn’t do well at all,” Allotey Jacobs rebuked the Attorney General.

  • Manuel Akanji: Man City sign Switzerland defender from Borussia Dortmund

Manchester City have signed Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji on a five-year deal.

The 27-year-old joins from Borussia Dortmund, where he has made 158 appearances since January 2018.

Akanji has 41 caps for Switzerland and played a key role in their qualification for the World Cup.

“I am delighted to be here and can’t wait to get started. City have been one of the best teams in Europe over the last few seasons,” he said.

“They are brilliant to watch, play an exciting brand of football and compete for trophies year in, year out, so coming here feels like the perfect next step in my career.

“Pep Guardiola is an exceptional manager and this is an exceptional squad of players, so this is an exciting opportunity for me.

“I am really looking forward to testing myself in the Premier League and I will do everything I can to help this club be successful.”

Akanji, who began his career with FC Basel, links up with former Dortmund team-mate Erling Haaland following his move to City earlier this summer.

He is the fifth signing Guardiola has made during this transfer window as City look to win a third successive Premier League title and a first Champions League trophy.

City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain said: “Manuel has plenty of experience playing at the top level of European football and we are confident he will be a valuable addition to our squad.

“We have been impressed with his performances during his time at Dortmund, where he has developed into a very good defender and one who is ready to perform in both the Premier League and Champions League.

“He has everything we want in a centre-back. He is strong, quick, comfortable in possession, has an excellent passing range and he will complement the other defenders in this team and our style of play.”

Meanwhile, French midfielder Claudio Gomes, 22, has left to join Italian Serie B club Palermo.

He made three appearances for City, and has had loan spells at PSV Eindhoven and Barnsley.

  • Julian Draxler: Benfica take Germany midfielder on season-long loan from Paris St-Germain

Benfica have signed attacking midfielder Julian Draxler from Paris St-Germain on a season-long loan.

The Germany international, 28, moved to PSG in 2017 in a £35.5m deal and has won four Ligue 1 titles in France.

However, he struggled to be a regular first choice with a large number of his 198 appearances coming as a substitute.

Draxler’s departure comes during a hectic final few days of the window for PSG, who signed Fabian Ruiz on a five-year deal from Napoli on Tuesday.

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes also left the club on Wednesday to join Juventus on loan, while Senegal international Idrissa Gueye returned to Everton on a two-year deal for a fee of about £2m on Thursday.

France left-back Layvin Kurzawa moved to Fulham, while Senegal defender Abdou Diallo also departed on a season-long loan to RB Leipzig.

On Saturday, former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera returned to Athletic Bilbao from PSG on a season-long loan, with the La Liga side having the option to make the 33-year-old’s move permanent.

  • Chris Dawson: How The Teacher’s Pet podcast helped catch and jail a killer

Twenty-one years ago, journalist Hedley Thomas walked out of a Sydney police station blinking in astonishment.

Back then, few had heard of Lynette Dawson, a mother-of-two who had disappeared without a trace in 1982.

But Mr Thomas’ perusal of her cold case that day set in motion a series of events that would make Lynette Dawson a household name. It culminated on Tuesday with her husband, Chris Dawson, convicted of her murder.

From the get-go, Mr Thomas said, he was struck by how absurd and “unjust” Mrs Dawson’s story seemed.

“A young mother who was devoted to her daughters [was] being written off as a woman who didn’t care about them, who just ran off… while her husband was conducting this extraordinary relationship with a schoolgirl half his wife’s age,” he told local broadcaster Seven.

As he dug deeper, his bewilderment only grew.

She had left with just a few clothes – no suitcase, no jewellery, not even her contact lenses.

And she had no job lined up, no car and little, if any, money.

She supposedly didn’t contact anyone again except the husband who had betrayed and humiliated her.

“That is just completely ridiculous,” Mr Thomas told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, adding that “people would see through it today”.

On Tuesday – 40 years after Mrs Dawson vanished – a judge in the New South Wales Supreme Court did.

Her body has never been found and the entire case hinged on circumstantial evidence.

But Justice Ian Harrison concluded that Chris Dawson – driven by an infatuation with his teenage babysitter, who was also a student at the school where he taught – had murdered his wife.

    The podcast

Although he first learned about Mrs Dawson’s case in 2001, Mr Thomas didn’t begin digging into it in earnest until more than 15 years later.

By then two coronial inquests had recommended “a known person” be charged with her murder, but prosecutors had declined, saying there wasn’t enough evidence.

Lynette Dawson holds one of her baby daughters
Image source, SUPPLIED Image caption, Lynette Dawson’s body has never been found

Mr Thomas began speaking to Mrs Dawson’s friends, family and neighbours, and Dawson’s teenager-lover-turned-second-wife, who is known for legal reasons as JC.

He also conducted extraordinary interviews with senior police involved with the investigation – including the state’s police commissioner – and with a coroner who had presided over one of the inquests.

The podcast series he created for The Australian – The Teacher’s Pet – touches on Dawson’s affair, claims of physical abuse against his wife and allegations that he contemplated hiring a hitman to kill her.

It points out inconsistencies in Dawson’s statements, paints him as a killer, and includes speculation about how he could have disposed of his wife’s body.

Upon its release in mid-2018, the podcast – produced by Slade Gibson – was a huge success.

The series won Australian journalism’s highest honour and has been downloaded more than 60 million times, topping charts around the world.

And within months of its publication, Dawson was finally charged.

Police had for years been pushing the case, to no avail, and many credited the podcast with finally securing some hope of justice for Mrs Dawson.

    Greg and Merilyn Simms
Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Lynette Dawson’s brother Greg Simms and his wife Merilyn fought for renewing the investigation

After the verdict on Tuesday her brother Greg Simms thanked Mr Thomas for giving his sister a voice and helping clear her name.

“She loved her family and never left them of her own accord. Instead, her trust was betrayed by a man she loved,” he said.

But the podcast also ironically jeopardised the criminal proceedings against Dawson.

    The trial

Dawson’s lawyers argued – all the way to the High Court – for the case to be thrown out. The podcast meant there was no way he’d get a fair trial, they argued.

The courts found The Teacher’s Pet was indeed problematic for several reasons, says Melbourne Law School Professor Jeremy Gans.

Firstly, it broadcast mountains of content – and speculation – that would not have been allowed as evidence in a murder trial.

There was concern the publicity surrounding the podcast would have prejudiced potential jurors, and had tainted witness testimonies.

Then there was the friendly co-operation between Mr Thomas and the police, which raised concerns about whether the journalist had influenced the prosecution.

    Mick Fuller
Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Then NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller was criticised for his involvement with the podcast

And finally, there was what Justice Harrison on Tuesday called Mr Thomas’ “less than balanced” approach to the story.

“Judges took the view that Hedley Thomas wasn’t just being a reporter… he was pushing a narrative and very keen to convince everyone, including prosecutors, of Chris Dawson’s guilt,” said Prof Gans.

“Several said he just wasn’t interested in the presumption of innocence, they questioned his ethics, and all sorts of things.”

Mr Thomas has described some of the criticism of him as unfair, but, on advice from prosecutors, The Australian took down The Teacher’s Pet podcast ahead of the trial.

The court delayed the trial, hoping that would give the speculation surrounding the case time to die down, and Dawson was instead granted a trial before a single judge, rather than a jury.

Both those outcomes were not ideal, Prof Gans says.

During the delay, potential witnesses died.

And trials before a lone judge are less likely to end in a conviction – judges, unlike juries, must explain their reasoning and tend to have a stricter definition of what constitutes reasonable doubt.

“For juries, the fact that you don’t have to give reasons means that you go on your gut a bit more,” Prof Gans says. “I always thought that a jury was likely to convict in this case but the judge was pretty unlikely to convict.”

When the judge did convict Dawson, Prof Gans says he was surprised.

But, he adds, these kinds of verdicts are often easier to appeal.

“You’ve got these reasons that you can attack, and Dawson has that benefit now.”

    Chris Dawson outside court

Lawyers for Dawson have already indicated he is likely to appeal.

In the end, Justice Harrison did find the podcast “may in whole or in part have completely deprived some evidence of its usefulness”. He also disregarded much of the new information the podcast uncovered.

    Verdict is an ‘incredible relief’

In the “best case scenarios”, true crime series have solved cold cases, exonerated wrongly imprisoned people and exposed misconduct by investigators and prosecutors, Prof Gans says.

And that is exactly what Mr Thomas says he set out to do.

“This idea that the legal [and] criminal justice system can just manage this and not miss anything is a furphy – it’s a lie,” he told The Australian.

“There is always so much more material, so many more witnesses you could talk to, more evidence that can be gleaned. My overriding aim with these podcasts is to solve crimes.”

Seeing that achieved on Tuesday was an “incredible relief”, he says.

“When the hammer finally fell on Chris Dawson and he was declared guilty by the judge, it was a powerful moment,” he told Seven.

“He’s been scheming and manipulating and lying for at least 40 years. I hope that he is appropriately punished for it.”

Dawson will face a sentence hearing on 11 November.

  • Putin will not attend Gorbachev’s funeral

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the funeral of Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union‘s last leader, the Kremlin has confirmed.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Mr Putin’s work schedule would not permit him to attend the event on Saturday.

He said the Russian leader had paid his respects at the Moscow hospital where Gorbachev died on Tuesday, aged 91.

Gorbachev’s reforms helped end the Cold War, but saw the demise of the Soviet Union, which Mr Putin has lamented.

Warning: some readers may find the video below distressing.

In 2005, the Russian president said the break-up of the USSR was “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the [20th] Century”.

However, in his telegram of condolences to Gorbachev’s family on Wednesday, Mr Putin struck a more conciliatory note, describing him as “a politician and statesman who had a huge impact on the course of world history”.

On Thursday, Russian state television showed Mr Putin placing red roses beside Gorbachev’s coffin in Moscow’s Central Clinical Hospital.

“Unfortunately, the president’s work schedule will not allow him to do this on 3 September, so he decided to do it today,” Mr Peskov told reporters.

Gorbachev’s funeral, which will be open to the public, will take place in Moscow’s Hall of Columns.

Afterwards, he will be buried at the city’s Novodevichy cemetery, next to his wife Raisa, who died in 1999.

Mr Peskov said Gorbachev’s ceremony would have “elements” of a state funeral and that the state was helping to organise it.

Mr Putin will not be the only notable absentee from the funeral. Many of the foreign leaders who might have been expected to attend are currently barred from Russian soil, in retaliation for Western sanctions imposed because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Top politicians from the US, UK, EU, Japan and Canada are among those on the exclusion list, including US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as well as the two candidates vying to succeed him, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak.

The Kremlin would say, what is all the fuss about? Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences to Mikhail Gorbachev’s family (in a brief telegram). He’s also laid flowers at Gorbachev’s open casket.

But, no, he won’t be going to the funeral. The official reason: no space in his busy schedule. Diary full. That rather unconvincing explanation is fuelling speculation that, in reality, it’s not that Putin has no time, but rather no desire to attend.

In other words, it’s a snub. Why might that be? Well, for a start, to those in power in Russia today, Mikhail Gorbachev is viewed as having been a weak, indecisive leader who let a superpower – and Russia’s global influence – slip away.

What’s more, President Putin has been busy dismantling Mikhail Gorbachev’s legacy. Gorbachev opened up the country, granted freedoms to his people and sought peace and friendship with Western nations. That’s not President Putin’s thing at all. He’s been taking freedoms away, supressing democratic institutions and embracing the idea of confrontation with the West.

That – along with the invasion of Ukraine – is keeping President Putin very busy. No wonder his diary is full.

  • Microsoft Activision deal could lessen competition, UK watchdog finds

Microsoft’s plan to buy Activision Blizzard could substantially lessen competition in consoles, multi-game subscription services and game streaming, a UK watchdog has said.

Microsoft wants to buy the maker of Overwatch, Candy Crush and Call of Duty for $68.7bn (£59.2bn).

But the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) says its concerns mean it may now carry out an in-depth probe.

Microsoft said it was ready to work with the CMA on the “next steps”.

If the deal goes through it will be the Xbox maker’s largest ever acquisition.

The games Activision Blizzard make are some of the most popular in the world. But it has previously faced accusations of permitting a toxic and sexist work-place culture.

In its ruling, the CMA said that it was concerned that if Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard it could harm rivals, “by refusing them access to Activision Blizzard games or providing access on much worse terms”.

Sorcha O’Carroll, senior director of mergers at the CMA, said: “Microsoft could use its control over popular games like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft post-merger to harm rivals.

“If our current concerns are not addressed, we plan to explore this deal in an in-depth Phase 2 investigation to reach a decision that works in the interests of UK gamers and businesses.”

This decision marks the end of the CMA’s initial investigation, Phase 1 as it is called. At Phase 2, the CMA appoints an independent panel to examine the deal in more depth.

If after that CMA finds that a merger is problematic it will take steps to remedy its bad effects. That could mean stopping the merger, or allowing it to proceed but only if certain conditions are met.

    Mobile motive

In response to the news Microsoft President Brad Smith said in a statement, “We’re ready to work with the CMA on next steps and address any of its concerns.

“Sony, as the industry leader, says it is worried about Call of Duty, but we’ve said we are committed to making the same game available on the same day on both Xbox and PlayStation. We want people to have more access to games, not less.”

Microsoft maintains that its principal interest in the planned acquisition is Activision Blizzard’s expertise in mobile gaming.

The firm’s head of gaming, Phil Spencer, told Bloomberg that “the biggest gaming platform on the planet is mobile phones” an area in which Microsoft lacked expertise.

Currently Activision games can be played on both Xbox and rival PlayStation consoles, but the proposed takeover have led some to speculate that more games might become Xbox exclusives.

This is something Mr Smith previously denied in an interview with CNBC, telling the network that “Great titles like Call of Duty… will continue to be available on the Sony PlayStation”.

He drew parallels with the firm’s 2014 acquisition of Minecraft where he said the company had invested in the game and brought it to more platforms.

The point was reiterated in a blog post by Phil Spencer published on Thursday.

Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, an eye watering deal worth almost $70bn, shook the games industry.

These two are both absolute giants, and their merger would make them a behemoth.

The US tech giant, which owns Xbox, has aggressive gaming ambitions and deep pockets. It owns 23 games studios, including Minecraft maker Mojang, and Bethesda, creator of Fallout and SkyRim.

Activision Blizzard’s greatest hits include Call of Duty, Overwatch, Skylander and Diablo.

Sony – owner of the world’s best-selling games console, the PlayStation – has said publicly that it “expects” Microsoft to keep these enormous titles multi-platform.

But Microsoft’s Phil Spencer says what he’s really interested in now is the mobile gaming market, and Activision also happens to own Candy Crush Saga – a simple, ten year old game which remains one of the most popular mobile games of all time.

It’s no wonder that the competition regulators are now putting this deal even further under the microscope. They need to be certain that a merger of this size won’t completely crush the market.

Other countries, in addition to the UK, are carrying out their own anti-trust investigations – and last month Saudi Arabia became the first to approve the deal.

    Previous purchases

Some have pointed to previous takeovers for evidence that the deal might lead to more new Activision Blizzard games becoming exclusive to Microsoft owned platforms.

Last year, Microsoft successfully purchased the parent company of Fallout maker Bethesda Softworks for $7.5bn (£6.46bn).

At the time the Mr Spencer said, “some new titles in the future that will be exclusive to Xbox and PC players”.

And in a tweet Xbox’s Aaron Greenberg confirmed that Starfield, a game announced by Bethseda three years prior to the purchase in 2018, will not be released on PlayStation.

Some independent game-makers have also been worried they might be marginalised in Microsoft’s Netflix-like game subscription service Game Pass if the deal went through, and the firm began favouring its own titles.

But Sony, which makes PlayStation, has also been acquiring studios, purchasing game-maker Bungie for $3.7bn in June.

  • OnlyFans creators made nearly $4bn last year

Content creators on subscription platform OnlyFans made nearly $4bn (£3.47bn) in 2021, the company has revealed.

The platform, which is known for hosting adult content, reported pre-tax profits of $433m last year, up from $61m in 2020.

It comes after OnlyFans saw a spike in users during the pandemic.

However, it has faced criticism for not doing enough to prevent under-age individuals selling explicit content.

The company said it was continually improving its approach to safety and content moderation.

Founded in 2016, OnlyFans has 220 million users and more than two million creators worldwide.

In 2021 it saw a 128% increase in the number of fans using the platform compared to the previous year, and a 34% rise in the number of creators.

Overall, creator earnings were more than double what they were the previous year.

OnlyFans takes a 20% commission on all payments made to its content creators.

Chief executive Amrapali Gan said: “We are empowering creators to monetise their content and have real control over it.”

“We will continue to invest in the creator economy by enhancing safety, developing original OFTV [the firm’s free streaming platform] content, and continuing to grow our community of creators and fans,” she added.

The site offers a platform for musicians, fitness trainers and celebrities to charge their followers for exclusive tips and visual content.

But it is best known for allowing content creators, including porn stars and sex workers, to charge for sexually explicit photographs and videos.

Last year the company announced that all sexually explicit content would be blocked from the platform, following pressure from banking partners.

But following a backlash from its users, OnlyFans suspended the policy change a week later.

In 2021, a BBC News investigation found children had used fake IDs to set up accounts on the site.

Following the report, the children’s commissioner for England said OnlyFans needed to do more to stop under-age individuals selling explicit images on the platform.

In response to the investigation, OnlyFans said it had closed the accounts and flagged and refunded all active subscriptions.

  • Ghanaians demand election of MMDCEs on non-partisan basis CDD report reveals

Majority of Ghanaians are pushing for the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) on non-partisan basis.

These are the findings of a September 2021 Local Government survey, conducted by Center for Democratic Governance (CDD) Ghana.

The campaign for the election of MMDCEs was truncated in 2019, with President Akufo-Addo calling for broader consultations and consensus.

The campaign was characterised by sharp disagreements over whether the local Executives should be elected along partisan or non-partisan lines.

But the Local Government survey findings show that seven out of every 10 Ghanaians would prefer a direct election of the local Executives; and that, the preference for a non-partisan election is on a steady rise.

Majority of Ghanaians, according to the findings, believe that MMDAs have performed very or fairly badly in the past five years.

  • Almost 50% of Ghanas population experiences food insecurity GSS Survey

Data from the 2022 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey has revealed that 49.1 percent of the Ghanaian population was food insecure in the first quarter of the year.

This represents 15.1 million of the 30.8 million persons in Ghana.

The percentage however reduced to 42.1 percent in the second quarter; 13 million of the total Ghanaian populace.

    Regional basis

The Greater Accra Region recorded the lowest food insecurity with a percentage of 27.2 percent, while the Upper East Region saw the highest of 73.7 percent.

In the first quarter of the year, the prevalence of food insecurity in four regions in the northern part of the country; Savannah (58.8%), Upper West (61.8%), North East (65.6%) and Upper East (73.7%) were more than twice that of Greater Accra Region (27.2%).

It is also observed that all regions experienced a reduction in food insecurity between quarters 1 and 2 except for the Upper West Region which saw an increase from 61.8 percent to 55 percent.

Meanwhile, Oti and Western North regions experienced the largest declines of 19.6 and 18.7 percentage points respectively.

    About the Survey

The Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey is the first nationally representative high-frequency household panel survey in Ghana.

The Survey, conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service, is being conducted to obtain quarterly and annual data on household final consumption expenditure and a wide scope of demographic, economic and welfare variables including statistics on labour, food security, multi-dimensional poverty and health status for research, policy, and planning.

The maiden publication presents highlights from the first and second quarter food insecurity, multidimensional poverty, and labour statistics reports.

Definitions of concepts (According to the GSS)

Food Insecurity A lack of available financial resources for food at the household level.

It is defined as a situation of “limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways”. (United States Department of Agriculture, 2000)

Moderate Food Insecurity People experiencing moderate levels of food insecurity will typically eat low-quality diets and might have been forced, at times during the last three months, also to reduce the quantity of food they would normally eat.

Severe Food Insecurity People facing severe food insecurity have likely run out of food, experienced hunger and, at the most extreme, gone for days without eating.

Serena Williams is reminding the world why she just may be the greatest women’s tennis player of all time.

The 40-year-old legend upset No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit in the second round of the US Open on Wednesday, winning 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2.

Williams, who has said she will “evolve away” from the sport after the tournament, turned in a vintage performance two days after she defeated Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3 in her opening match.

Over her career, Williams has won 23 grand slam singles titles, which is the most in the Open era and one behind the all-time record held by Margaret Court. She has also won four Olympic gold medals and over $94.5 million in prize money.

  • Shohei Ohtani sets new record in Angels 3-2 win over the Yankees

Shohei Ohtani became the first player in American League/National League history to hit 30 home runs and record 10 pitching wins in the same season in an epic showdown against the New York Yankees at the Angels stadium on Wednesday.

The two-way superstar’s three-run blast off the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole in the sixth inning gave the Los Angeles Angels the lead, and they eventually secured a 3-2 victory over the Yankees.
The feat also saw Ohtani become the first Japanese-born player with multiple 30-homer seasons.

Ohtani said he was “simply honored, happy and humbled” to hear of his achievement. “But I just want to stay healthy and finish strong.”
The reigning MVP is locked in a race for the American League Most Valuable Player award with the Yankees’ Aaron Judge — something which he admitted propelled his performance on Wednesday.
“It definitely leads to motivation to do better and try to go for that hardware,” Ohtani said. “It’s something I think about. But for the most part, I take it game by game and at-bat by at-bat. At the end of the day, we’ll count it all up.”
Ohtani, who delivered the winning blast for the second time in the three-game series against the Yankees, has recorded three home runs in his past four games.
“It was going to come down to something like that with the fans and the way the stadium was,” Angels interim manager Phil Nevin said.
“One of the stars was just rising up right here. Sho got a good one. He swung the bat well all three days. As a fan, it was an awesome day and I’m sure it was fun the last few days.”

  • David Bates leaves Aberdeen for Mechelen on permanent transfer

Scotland centre-half David Bates has left Aberdeen to join Mechelen in the Belgian top flight on a three-year contract.

The 25-year-old played 35 times for the Dons last season, but he has not made a single appearance this season.

The defender, who has four Scotland caps, began his career with Rangers before joining Hamburg.

Danny Buijs’ Mechelen currently sit 10th in the Belgian top flight after finishing eight last season.

Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin had earlier stated that he was open to Bates and striker Christian Ramirez finding new clubs and suggested that it was time for 22-year-old forward Connor McLennan to move on in pursuit of more regular first-time starts.

However, Goodwin played down the possibility of United States international Ramirez joining Heart of Midlothian following newspaper reports amid the Edinburgh club’s hunt for a replacement following Liam Boyce’s long-term injury.

“I can’t see us loaning a player to one of our rivals,” he added. “And, as of this moment in time, I’m not aware that Hearts have even made contact.”

  • Chelsea agree to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Guillem Balague

Chelsea have agreed a deal in principle worth £12m, plus defender Marcus Alonso, for Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, according to Guillem Balague.

Aubameyang scored 13 goals in 24 appearances for Barca after joining the Spanish club in February from Arsenal.

The 33-year-old would be Chelsea’s seventh summer signing.

The former Gabon international scored 92 goals in 163 games in all competitions for Arsenal, but left on a free transfer after falling out with manager Mikel Arteta.

That departure played a big part in the Gunners documentary All or Nothing.

Only four players have scored more Premier League goals than Aubameyang’s total of 68 in the period since 31 January 2018 – the date he joined Arsenal.

Aubameyang worked with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund between 2015 and 2017.

He scored 79 goals in 95 games under the German, 38 more than he netted under any other manager.

This summer the Blues have brought in French defender Wesley Fofana for a fee in the region of £70m, England forward Raheem Sterling from Manchester City for £50m, Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli for £34m, English midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa for £20m, Spain left-back Marc Cucurella from Brighton for £60m and Italian midfielder Cesare Casadei from Inter Milan.

A deal for Aubameyang would mean Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly will have spent almost £250m in his first transfer window since buying the club from Roman Abramovich.

  • Ryan Giggs trial: Gary Neville to be referred to Attorney General for social media post

Gary Neville played with Ryan Giggs at Manchester United

Pundit Gary Neville is to be referred to the Attorney General for a social media post he made during his ex-Manchester United team-mate Ryan Giggs’ domestic violence trial.

The judge in the case, Hilary Manley, has referred it as a possible case of contempt of court.

The jury in Giggs’ trial was discharged on Wednesday after failing to reach verdicts on any of the three charges.

Giggs denied headbutting ex-partner Kate Greville, 38, in a row at home.

Giggs, who resigned as Wales manager in June, also denied a charge of coercive or controlling behaviour towards Ms Greville, and denied assaulting Ms Greville’s sister Emma, 26.

Any retrial will not take place until at least 5 June 2023, the judge said.

Neville’s agent Di Law told the Daily Mail that the 47-year-old Sky Sports pundit was “absolutely adamant” that the post was referring to the Glazer family’s ownership of Manchester United and not the Giggs trial.

Contempt of court law prohibits publishing any information that creates a “substantial risk” of serious prejudice to a trial – including on social media. It is a criminal offence, punishable by a fine or up to two years in prison.

The judge referred to the post by Neville on Wednesday.

Judge Manley said: “Given the author is a person with a high public profile and his social media account has 1.5 million followers, it could be seen to be an attempt to influence on-going criminal proceedings and could be contempt of court.

“Accordingly, I am referring the matter to the office of the Attorney General for the consideration of a potential prosecution.”

A spokeswoman for the Attorney General’s Office said: “Contempt of court is a serious matter and the Attorney General will review any allegations brought to her carefully. We have not yet received a referral.”

BBC Sport has contacted 47-year-old Neville’s representatives for comment.

During the trial the lawyer acting for the prosecution said a social media post “by a member of the public who has a direct connection with this case” had been brought to his attention.

He added: “This may be a matter that requires immediate action, so far as that individual is concerned.”

The lawyer defending Giggs, Chris Daw QC, wanted to make it “crystal clear” the defendant did not have anything to do with the Instagram post.

Judge Manley allowed the trial to go ahead after deliberation and as there was no indication that any jury member had seen the post.

The former Manchester United footballer had been on trial for four weeks. The Crown Prosecution Service has a week to decide whether to pursue a retrial.

  • Growing up in Ashaiman is the best Stonebwoy

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has refuted claims that Ashaiman, a suburb of Accra, is a bad community to grow and live in.

Speaking to Nana Romeo in an exclusive interview on Accra FM, the singer explained that crime is not exclusive to Ashaiman and, like every community that records cases of criminal activities, Ashaiman has its fair share of such unfortunate events.

According to him, it is erroneous for people to conclude that Ashaiman is not a safe community based on the criminal activities of a select group of people.

“In every home, there is a bad nut, and that is the situation Ashaiman finds itself. Even in America and Germany, there are records of crime, so Ashaiman is not isolated from such acts. It is very wrong for anyone to assume Ashaiman people are bad generally because of the actions of a few people,” Stonebwoy explained while promoting his show Ashaiman to the World.”

Touching on the safety of fans during his Ashaiman to the World Concert”, Stonebwoy indicated that his team has put measures into place to safeguard attendees.

He called on fans to take charge of their personal security and heed all laid down security protocols for the event.

He said, “My team and I are working very hard on security, but again, everyone must be responsible and obey all the security protocols for their own safety.”

  • My greatest fear is losing my vision – Ghanaian Vogue editor

Edward Kobina Enninful, the editor-in-chief of British Vogue and a native of Ghana who has had multiple eye surgeries, has admitted that losing his sight is his worst dread.

The 50-year-old endured four surgeries to improve his impaired vision, and according to a BBC article, Mr. Enninful had four operations, one of which was on a detached retina. The man left Ghana for Britain when he was just 13 years old.

The Vogue editor described his operations and said that following surgery, he spent weeks staring at the floor.

When asked in his interview about whether he feared losing his sight, Edward Enninful answered in the positive.

“It’s my biggest fear…I never had good eyesight anyway. I always had my minus 10 glasses and I had four retinal detachments [needing] surgery each time. Then three weeks looking at the ground in a dark room and not lifting up your head. And yes, it was very psychologically intense.

“But what I’ve also learned is… you don’t need perfect vision to create. You don’t need 20/20 vision to see images. So that’s the irony of it: though I have bad eyesight, I’m still able to create images that people seem to resonate with,” he explained.

Edward, who has had a succession in the fashion industry, was appointed fashion director of British fashion magazine i-D at the age of 18.

  • We are worried about deteriorating plight of farmers PFAG

In light of the current economic difficulties that the populace is experiencing, the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) says it is concerned about the deteriorating situation of farmers.

“We are equally saddened and frustrated with the government’s unsatisfactory steps to address and raise us out of these issues,” stated Mr. Awal Wepia Addo, the Association’s President.

He claimed that farmers “are consistently faced with growing prices of inputs and other costs of production, decreasing their ability to produce as envisaged” in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.

The President said the crop budget for an acre of maize, which used to be around GH1,700 in 2021 had jumped to GH 5,000 for the 2022 planting season.

He said the poor performance of the cedi and high fuel prices made prices unstable with farmers having no option but to underproduce.

” The result is the low production and the high prices of the food we are witnessing on the markets,” he added, saying: “We, therefore, call for an emergency stakeholder meeting to review the implementation strategy of the various government initiatives, which are clearly not responding to the needs of the country.”

The Association said it was willing and ready to engage the government and other stakeholders to find a lasting and sustainable solution to the challenge.

  • All you need to know about THAT ‘She-Hulk

She-Hulk:One of the most entertaining and unexpected cameos in the MCU to date can be found in Attorney At Law’s third episode.

Given the wide range of creative cameos in this past spring’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness—Bruce Campbell, John Krasinski, Charlize Theron, and even Patrick Stewart appeared—a that’s bold assertion, but trust us on this one.

A shape-shifting elf who persuaded Dennis Bukowski (Drew Matthews), the obnoxious district attorney, that he was dating the real Megan Thee Stallion is liable for his actions in a subplot of episode 3.

The chart-topping, Grammy Award-winning superstar is shown to be in the audience when the court rules in Dennis’ favor, admonishing triumphantly that there is only one Megan Thee Stallion.

“For the story to work, we needed a famous, successful, and beautiful female celebrity. We weren’t sure if she was going to be an actress or a model or a musician, because it could go so many different ways, and it would kind of change the story a tiny bit, depending on who it was,” Gao said in a Zoom interview.

But then everything clicked when Jameela Jamil, who plays superpowered influencer Titania in She-Hulk, suggested Megan. The two had previously worked together on HBO Max’s Legendary, a voguing reality TV competition.

“When [Jameela] brought [Megan] up, it stopped everyone in their tracks. If we knew that she would do it, then obviously it would be her — there would be no one else in the running as far as we’re concerned,” said Gao. “It was just a matter of, ‘Does she want us?’ And then we found out that she loves Marvel and she loves superheroes. It all came together really quickly, and it was just such a dream come true.”

The choice proved especially exciting for Tatiana Maslany, who does double duty starring as Jennifer Walters and She-Hulk. She-Hulk director and executive producer Kat Coiro told Mashable, “Tatiana is the world’s biggest Megan fan, so she just was vibrating with excitement.”

Tatiana is the world’s biggest Megan fan, so she just was vibrating with excitement

Episode 3’s post-credits bumper, which sees Jennifer take Megan on as a client before twerking along with her to Megan’s song “Body,” stemmed from Maslany’s love of the rapper. “The scene of them dancing was actually added so that Tatiana could have a scene with [Megan] and show us her twerking abilities, which go toe to toe,” Coiro said. So, when Jennifer tells Megan she would kill for her, chances are there’s a bit of Maslany’s real fandom in there too. And who can blame her?

Megan Thee Stallion is the latest in a slew of cool cameos slipped into the first three episodes of She-Hulk, although it’s the only one not connected to the MCU.

We’ve also seen Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Abomination (Tim Roth), and Wong (Benedict Wong) pop up. Jennifer even remarks on the number of cameos in one of her fourth-wall-breaking asides to the audience…before reminding us that this is her show. As if we’d ever forget you, Jennifer!

According to Coiro and Gao, all the cameos are by design, linking back to the show’s main genre of “fun lawyer show.”

“The format of a legal comedy really lends itself to organically bringing in cameos, because this lawyer is always going to be working on cases, she’s always going to be working on lawsuits, and that means naturally that there have to be people behind those lawsuits,” Gao said.

  • KTU paid GH¢67,940 as sitting allowance to 10 non-committee members – Report

In the 2021 Auditor-report, General‘s the Koforidua Technical University (KTU) was mentioned for cash irregularities.

Although the committee was tasked with assigning secretaries from among its members to record the minutes of the meetings, it is claimed that the school paid a total of GH67,940 to 10 non-committee members who functioned as recorders at various sessions as a sitting allowance.

The management has been instructed to stop using the non-committee members and instead use the committee secretaries who have been tasked with taking minutes.

Management also procured drugs totalling GH¢165,780.25 from the open market without a certificate of non-availability from the regional medical stores.

In its recommendation, the AG asked management to obtain the non-availability certificate before purchasing drugs on non-drug consumables from any other sources.

The school also failed to register four vehicles for the university with the green number plate as per government directives.

  • Exporters and importers have threaten to protest over illegal local handling fees

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) expressed sadness over recent developments in the maritime industry, which, if handled, might drive many shippers out of business.

“The huge and illegal local handling charges being imposed importers by shipping lines operating in our maritime sector, have become an albatross and a threat to local importers and enterprises as a whole,” the association claims.

The association, in a statement noted that importers, after paying so much as freight charges, are, again, subjected to coughing up huge sums of money for the payment of local handling charges that have no bases or legal backing.

The IEAG said it has documented evidence that shows that some shipping lines are charging as much as GHC3,344 for a 20-footer container, as local handling charge, and these charges could go up if the importer is clearing more than one container.

Apart from importers being made to pay cash for the local handling charges, the IEAG alleged that they are, again, compelled to deposit an amount of GHS300 to GHS1,000 as insurance cover for the containers in which the goods are being transported.

“It’s quite interesting to note that even though the said deposit charges are refundable, it takes over months for the shipping lines to refund the deposit,” the statement signed by the Executive Secretary, Samson Asaki Awingobit noted.

“It’s also quite unfortunate to note that these local handling charges are being charged at a dollar rate of GHS10.85, as against that of the central bank rate of 8.2,” the statement added.

The IEAG says it remains resolute in its call for the government, through the Shipper’s Authority, to exercise its powers in ensuring “this daylight thievery by the shipping lines is addressed.”

“The cupidity, as demonstrated by the shipping lines to exploit shippers (importers and exporters), is unfortunate; and we, as an association, expect the presidency to compel the transport ministry to crack the whip, since the imposition of these charges by any shipping line without the approval of the relevant bodies, constitutes an infringement of the sovereign rights of the business community in Ghana.”

The importers and exporters have threatened to hit the street with a sit-down strike if the government fails to act on their plea.

  • 380,000 people are triple-burdened in the labor force – Report

According to the Ghana Statistical Service’s (GSS) Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey, 380,000 of the country’s working-age population (15 and older) are food insecure, multidimensionally poor, and unemployed.

Government statistician Professor Samuel Kobina Annim said this at a news conference in Accra on Thursday, September 1, 2022. He added that the Savannah area has the greatest proportion of triple-burdened people in Ghana.

This, he claimed, was more than twice as high as the 3.2% national average.

The statistics revealed that between the first and second quarter of 2022, food insecurity dropped by 7.0 percentage points while multidimensional poverty dropped by 2.6 percent points.

In addition, unemployment rate, on the other hand, increased by 0.5 percentage points.

The labour statistics also indicated that about two-thirds of the employed population are engaged in vulnerable employment with significant variation across urban areas (56.4%) and rural (80%).

The Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES) is the first nationally representative high-frequency household panel survey in Ghana.

It is conducted to obtain quarterly and annual data on household final consumption expenditure and a wide scope of demographic, economic and welfare variables including statistics on labour, food security, multidimensional poverty and health status for research, policy, and planning.

This gives room for the Ghana Statistical Service to present statistics on labour transitions for the first time.

  • Price of 50 kg cement bag jumps to GH¢73

Some cement producers have raised cement prices to approximately GH73.

In some significant industrial shops, a 50 kg bag of cement that cost GH 50 in November 2021 now costs GH 73.

GhanaWeb discovered the price list of GHACEM, a well-known cement producer, whose costs have increased as of August 30, 2022.

According to the list, a 50-kilogram bag of cement from Super Rapid costs GHC 64.59, a bag from Super Strong costs GHC 68, and a bag from GHACEM Extra costs GHC 72.91.

According to myjoyonline reports, the increase has been attributed to the rapid depreciation of the cedi which has resulted in the increase in the cost of operations in the past few months.

“When the factory price (wholesale price) of a 50 kilogram was about ¢59.00, it was based on an exchange rate of around ¢7.60 in June this year,” a manufacturer whose name is withheld is quoted by myjoyonline.com.

However, the prices are slightly different in Accra from prices in other regions.

“Based on the fact that most of the manufacturers have to import some of the raw materials at a dollar rate of more than ¢9, someone has to take care of this sudden increase in cost”, another manufacturer stated.

Check out a list of GHACEM’s prices:

The report recommended that management should ensure that the COVID-19 Private Fund account for the total amount of Ghc254,203.00, failing which the total amount of GHc254,203.00 should be recovered from the Covid-19 Private Fund and the same paid to the COVID-19 Trust Fund.

  • GRA to detain and prosecute companies that fail to issue VAT invoices

According to the Ghana Revenue Authority, companies that don’t provide Value Added Tax (VAT) invoices for consumers’ purchases may be detained and prosecuted starting on September 1, 2022.

This, according to Edward Appenteng Gyambrah, Commissioner of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division (DTRD) of the GRA, is necessary since some companies have allegedly violated the rule governing invoice issuance.

He claims that the GRA will conduct the exercise by inspecting stores and making mystery purchases all around the nation.

The exercise is expected to run from September 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022, according to graphiconline reports.

The report by Graphic, noted that some businesses were not issuing VAT invoices or were misreporting, also known as ëundercardingí the tax, in order to pay less revenue to the state.

However, he noted that some buyers did not bother to ask for the invoices after their purchase.

Therefore, customers who do not demand the invoice will also face the wrath of the Ghana Revenue Authority.

The practice, Gyambrah stated was in clear contravention of sections 58 and 59 of the VAT Act, 2013 (Act 870) which involves charging, issuing, and accounting for VAT appropriately.

  • Sarkodie is an ordinary artiste – Dr UN

The organizer of the controversial Global Blueprint Excellence Awards, Dr. UN, described Sarkodie as an ordinary artiste, adding that he is not better than him or bigger than his award scheme.

Speaking in an interview with blogger Zionfelix, he added that the rapper doesn’t have better qualifications.

He also claimed to have had direct contact with the musician who was a recipient of his controversial UN awards.

“When he travels, Sarkodie will let you know that I am in Memphis…I am in South Africa, Zulu, he takes pictures of himself with the lions and sends them to me on WhatsApp.

“I don’t know how you value Sarkodie more than the people I have brought on my platform. He is an ordinary artiste I know. He is not older than me and doesn’t hold any better qualifications than me. He is not a master of the mic than myself,” he said.

Dr UN advised the award-winning artiste to humble himself because the people he respects, like Bola Ray and Kwame Adinkra, among others, are not better than him.

“He has to humble himself. If you respect Bola Ray you have to respect me much better. If you respect Kwame Adinkra, you have to honour me.

“Don’t take me cheeky ease. It’s the SHS graduates that listen to you. Someone can see me as a super person in a power bubble,” he added.
