  • Russia-Ukraine updates: Russia claims its missiles destroyed ammunition depot in Odesa

Russia‘s defense ministry claims its hypersonic Kinzhal missiles destroyed an ammunition depot in Ukraine‘s Odesa region. Meanwhile, Ukraine authorities say the missiles struck a granary.

Russia said on Sunday that its hypersonic Kalibr missiles had destroyed an ammunition depot containing missiles for the US-made HIMARS rocket system in Ukraine’s southeastern Odesa region, while Kyiv said a granary had been hit.

Russia’s defense ministry said sea-based Kalibr missiles had destroyed a depot that also housed Western-made anti-aircraft systems.

A spokesman for Odesa’s regional administration said two missiles had been shot down over the sea, but that three had struck agricultural targets.

There were no casualties, the spokesman, Serhiy Bratchuk, said on Telegram. An explosives expert and other investigators were working at the granary, he said.

Russia’s defense ministry also said its forces had destroyed two M777 Howitzers in combat positions in the Kherson region, as well as a fuel depot in the Zaporizhzhia region that it said was storing more than 100 tonnes of diesel fuel.

Zelenskyy warns Russia against trials of Ukrainian soldiers

During his nightly video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Russia against putting Ukrainian soldiers on trial.

Zelenskyy referenced media reports that indicated Moscow and its proxy forces planned public show trials of Ukrainian fighters who were captured during the siege of Mariupol.

“If this despicable court takes place, if our people are brought into these settings in violation of all agreements, all international rules, there will be abuse,” he said.

On August 24, Ukraine celebrates 31 years of independence from the former Soviet Union.

Ukraine is gearing up for the possibility for Russian state-sponsored mischief and terror. In Kyiv, authorities have banned gatherings from August 22 to August 25.

Ukraine’s Independence Day will also mark six months since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of its neighbor.

Mykhaylo Podolyak, a Zelenskyy advisor, noted, “Russia is an archaic state that links its actions to certain dates, it’s an obsession of sorts,” and was therefore likely to intensify its bombing campaign to coincide with the holiday.

UK, US, France, Germany push for nuclear safety in Ukraine

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the leaders of the United States, France and Germany on Sunday stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of nuclear sites in Ukraine in a call, Johnson’s office said.

“On a joint call, the Prime Minister, President (Joe) Biden, President (Emmanuel) Macron and Chancellor (Olaf) Scholz underlined their steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion,” a Downing Street spokesperson said in a statement.

“They stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and security of nuclear installations and welcomed recent discussions on enabling an IAEA mission to the Zaporizhzhia facility.”

Moscow and Kyiv have earlier accused each other of shelling the complex, and the fighting has raised fears of a nuclear catastrophe.

German Finance Minister says he wants to travel to Ukraine soon

In the ARD interview on Sunday, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) said he wants to travel to Ukraine soon.

When asked when he was going to Kyiv, Lindner answered: “Now in late summer or autumn. I’m talking to my Ukrainian colleague about it.”

In May, Lindner had already offered his counterpart in Ukraine a visit to Kyiv.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) was the first German government member to visit Kyiv in May since the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24, and several other ministers have followed since. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) traveled to Ukraine in June.

Senior Ukrainian intelligence official found dead

A regional head of Ukraine’s SBU intelligence services has been found dead at his home in central

Ukraine, the prosecutor general’s office said on Sunday.

Oleksandr Nakonechny was found by his wife with gunshot wounds in a room of their apartment in the city of Kropyvnytsky late Saturday after she heard gunfire, the office wrote on Telegram.

Police have opened an investigation into the death, but made no further comments. Nakonechny has headed the SBU branch in the region since January 2021.

In July, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired the head of the SBU, his childhood friend Ivan Bakanov, saying he did not do enough to rid the agency of spies and Russian collaborators.

Zelenskyy said there would be a revision of SBU personnel and several senior officials at the agency have been fired over the past several months.

Czechs send 1,968 crowns to Ukraine in nod to 1968 Soviet invasion

Czech nationals have been sending exactly 1,968 crowns ($80) to Ukraine to help it defend itself against Russia and to commemorate the 1968 invasion of then Czechoslovakia by Soviet-led troops, the Ukrainian embassy said on Sunday.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has killed thousands, forced millions to flee and caused damage worth billions of dollars, enters its seventh month next week.

The Czechs were using a special payment code to donate 1,968 crowns ($80) to an already existing account set up by Ukraine’s embassy in the Czech Republic to collect funds.

“Even at the weekend, dozens and dozens of payments in the value of 1,968 crowns are arriving to our account, thank you so much, Czech friends!” the embassy said on Twitter.

On August 21, 1968, armies of the Soviet Union and its allies crossed borders into Czechoslovakia, a fellow member of the eastern bloc, to crush a reform movement started earlier that year known as the “Prague Spring”.

The troops killed dozens of civilians and the subsequent occupation pushed tens of thousands into exile. The troops eventually left after the fall of Communist rule in 1989.

  • Ukraine: Obstacles to global grain shipments remain

A month after Russia and Ukraine agreed on a sea corridor so that global exports of grain could resume, high insurance premiums are just one issue. Experts have called for international support for Ukrainian farmers.

Over two dozen ships have left the largest Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea since July 22, when Russia and Ukraine signed an agreement brokered by the United Nations and Turkey to allow grain exports from Ukraine to restart. After months of exports being blocked by Russian warships and Ukrainian sea mines, one of the first vessels to leave was chartered by the UN and carried 23,000 tons of wheat for the World Food Program to help avert famine in Ethiopia and other parts of Africa.

So far, according to an interim report by the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority, some 600,000 tons have arrived on the global market. The authority hopes eventually for 100 ships to be leaving ports in Odesa, Pivdennyi and Chornomorsk every month. But this is not happening yet.

Shipping companies reluctant to dock in a war zone

Apart from the UN-chartered ship that left for Ethiopia, only four vessels entered the ports of the Odesa region in accordance with new contracts. The other ships had already been waiting in port for months.

“The situation is very slow with new contracts,” Pavlo Martyshev from the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) told DW. “The participants on the market don’t really trust the Russians and expect surprises,” he added, alluding to a Russian missile strike on the port of Odesa just one day after the grain corridor agreement was signed.

At the beginning of August, Martyshev had optimistically estimated in an analysis for the KSE that revenues of over $5 billion (€5 billion) would be generated by the additional export potential — an important sum in foreign currency for war-torn Ukraine and its farmers. But the reality currently looks different.

“Freight costs vary widely, often within a day. The market is nervous. Sometimes there are reports of Russian missile fire on the Odesa region, sometimes on the port of Mykolaiv, sometimes Russian fighter planes fly over the demilitarized sea corridor intended for the safe passage of ships,” Martyshev

    explained.

    Risk premiums are high

Odesa resident Gennediy Ivanov, the managing director of the logistics company BPG Shipping, is familiar with transporting goods to war zones: His company organized shipments to Yemen for over 10 years. Now, he is struggling to convince shipping companies to dock in his hometown.

“There are few shipping companies that systematically work in potentially dangerous regions such as West Africa or Yemen and are also willing to serve Ukraine because they know there are risk premiums,” he told DW. “This ultimately means that shipping costs are much higher than in neighboring, ‘peaceful’ countries like Romania and Bulgaria.”

But he was confident that the longer the grain corridor functioned without incident, the more ships would enter Ukrainian ports. “When the grain agreement was signed, insurance companies expected premiums of 4 to 5% of the ships’ market value for a seven-day period. Today, they are at 1 to 1.5%, which still costs an average of $200,000 to $270,000 per week,” he said.

    Advantage for Russia

Ivanov explained that it costs roughly $10,000 more per day to hire a ship to export grain from Ukraine than from Romania. Also, the time-consuming inspections in Istanbul meant shipowners charged Ukrainian clients for seven to nine days extra. A Russian condition of the agreement was that all ships entering and leaving Istanbul should be inspected by the Turkish military in order to prevent any weapons from arriving in Ukraine by ship.

“All this means that a ton of cargo leaving from ports in Ukraine costs $25 to $35 more than from Romania,” Ivanov said.

The rising costs are reducing the exporters’ returns and leading to decreased purchasing prices for Ukrainian farmers — this means an advantage for Russia, Ukraine’s main rival on the grain market, even if risk premiums for Russian ports have also increased since the war broke out.

“Russia expects a record wheat harvest of over 90 million tons this year,” Martyshev told DW. “Under these circumstances, Russian wheat will dominate the market. The Russians can give discounts and they have already managed to rid certain significant markets, such as Turkey or Egypt, of Ukrainian wheat.”

The same was true for sunflower oil, he added: “Many factories have been at a standstill since the beginning of the war, and instead of sunflower oil, Ukraine is now exporting unprocessed sunflower seeds, which brings in much less foreign currency.”

    Potential disaster for food security

Experts estimate that around 18 million tons of grain are still stuck in Ukrainian silos. This is a tight situation for corn farmers, in particular, warned Martyshev.

“In September/October, the new harvest will be here, and if exports do not step up drastically, there will be a shortage of storage capacity for around 10 million tons of corn.”

He called for international support, including loans that could help small farms build temporary silos ahead of the next sowing season.

Heinz Strubenhoff, a consultant who worked for many years in Ukraine for the World Bank, said he believes the Istanbul grain agreement will only produce tangible results when Ukraine’s main international partners help shoulder the risk premiums of insuring cargo. “Russia has an interest in continued uncertainty and keeping insurance premiums high,” he said. “The EU and the US must have an interest in helping Ukraine with the cost of reinsurance, which would make exports competitive again,” he said.

He said more farmers in Ukraine might otherwise be tempted to grow rapeseed and sunflowers and this would do nothing to improve food security in the medium term, which was initially one of the main reasons for the grain corridor agreement.

  • They are just killing us – TaTU students lament surge in electricity tariffs

Students of Tamale Technical University are unhappy with the recent surge in utility tariffs, accusing government of deliberately imposing hardship on Ghanaians.

The students say the upward adjustment of electricity and water tariffs, coupled with the rising cost of living in the country is unbearable.

The situation, they say is adversely affecting their academic activities as they are compelled to look for non-existent jobs to be able to cope with the current hardship in the country.

The Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) this week announced an increase in the average end-user tariff for electricity by 27.15% and water by 21.55%, effective September 1, 2022.

Many Ghanaians have expressed their displeasure at the decision, saying that the upward adjustment of the tariffs will only worsen their living conditions.

For the TaTU students, government is slowly ‘killing’ Ghanaian students who rent on campus.

“As a student from another town to come and stay here, I’m not also at the hostel, I am renting. Now, utility bills are increased, that means landlords will also increase their rent,” a student said.

“So now, rents are increased, water bill is increased and the light bill is also increased. That is really affecting me in my academics” Kuyoli Cynthia, a student of the Tamale Technical University told GhanaWeb on Thursday, August 18.

Abdulai Muzain, another student said “They are just killing us because it is not easy on our part. Electricity, water [and] transportation is not easy [and it’s not easy] to get money, just to come and suffer”.

“As a student, you can’t do away with electricity. Electricity is our main source because in the night, you’ll have to study” he added.

They appealed to government to at least cut down the yet to be implemented tariffs to ensure some relief is provided them, saying that the increment will go a long way to affect their academics.

” we are just pleading with those in charge if they can just cut down some percentage for us” they appealed.

  • Mohammed Kudus move to Everton in limbo – Reports

Ghanaian midfielder, Mohammed Kudus is still wanted by Everton despite Ajax’s refusal to release him during the current transfer window

The Toffees have identified the former Nordsjaelland midfielder to boost their squad this summer transfer window.

Kudus has received interest from clubs in Europe and has been linked with a move away from Ajax in search of more play time as the World Cup draws nearer.

The 21-year-old has been in fine form in pre-season with four goals in four games but has failed to break into the first team under coach Alfred Schreuder since the start of the season despite being the club’s most impressive player in the pre-season.

The Ghana international has made only two appearances all as a substitute in the second half for Ajax this campaign.

With the World Cup coming up in a few months, the Ghana star is frustrated and wants out of Ajax in search of more playing time.

However, Dutch news outlets are reporting that Ajax are unwilling to release unhappy Kudus in this window.

The Dutch giants are yet to also receive an official offer for Kudus from the interested clubs.

With the 2022 World Cup looming, Ghana’s talented playmaker does not want to risk his starting place in the Black Stars squad which led to his decision to demand the move.

The Ghanaian midfielder joined Ajax from the Danish side Nordsjaelland in the summer of 2020 for nine million Euros.

The attacking midfielder had a blistering start to his career at Ajax commanding first-team place until an injury in his opening UEFA Champions League match against Liverpool stalled his progress.

  • Akufo-Addo, Bawumia must apologize to Ghanaians for current economic crisis – Awingobit

Executive Secretary of Ghana Importers and Exporters Association, Sampson Asaki Awingobit, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his vice, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to render an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for plunging the country into an economic mess.

According to him, government’s Economic Management Team have lost touch with reality as Ghanaians are suffering due to high inflation, increase in goods and services, fuel price hikes and increase in transport fares.

Speaking on Citi TV’s Big Issue and monitored by GhanaWeb on August 20, 2022, Mr Awingobit said, “Government and its so-called economic management committee have lost touch with the people. They have no knowledge, I do not know where they got their PhDs from…This government has failed us woefully, and it is high time the President [Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo] and his vice [Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia] accept and apologise to Ghanaians. They have performed abysmally. They cannot promise us flamboyant things and fail and go on with their lives as though nothing has happened.”

“These are the same people who criticised the former President [John Mahama] throughout his tenure, going about, promising us heaven on earth all to get into power. I want the President of the Republic of Ghana and his vice to apologise to Ghanaians. They have said so much and delivered little,” he stated.

His comment comes on the back of the high inflation rate and the frequent depreciation of the local currency.

The Bank of Ghana on Wednesday, August 17 increased the monetary policy rate by 300 basis points to hit 22% from an earlier 19% rate.

This was after an emergency meeting was held to address the hike in inflation rates which currently stands at 31.7%.

Food inflation rose to 32.3 percent in July 2022 from 30.7 percent in June 2022. Similarly, non-food inflation increased to 31.3 percent from 29.1 percent in June 2022, contributing 55 percent to the rise in headline inflation in July 2022.”

According to the central bank, these happenings including the weakening of the Ghana cedi have pushed the economy into heightening uncertainties leading to the increase in the policy rate.

The prosecution has stated that the Attorney General‘s (A-G) office is preparing for committal procedures against the six accused individuals who are now in court for allegedly gang-raping a first-year student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST.

The process will pave the way for a full trial at a higher court.

    In court

On Thursday, August 18, the Asokore Mampong District Court granted a request to remand the suspects into police custody to reappear on September 2.

“We alluded to the fact that there was a bail application at the High Court by Counsel for the accused persons but it was refused. So we brought it to the attention of the trial judge and he went ahead to remand the accused persons,” said the Head of Legal and Prosecution at the Ashanti Regional Police Command ACP Kofi Blagodzi.

The suspects, including the boyfriend of the victim, Patrick Fosu reportedly lured the victim, a level 100 student of the KNUST to commit the crime with the five others on July 24. “Very soon the A-G will commence the committal proceedings after which the actual trial will be at the High Court,” Blagodzi said indicating that a bail application at the High Court by counsel for the accused persons was not granted.

    Difficult times

The suspects will remain behind bars until September 2. University authorities are yet to determine their although sources say they risk being rusticated.

Lawyer for the accused persons is urging calm but admits parents of the accused persons are worried that their sons are going through such difficult times.

“We went to the High Court and made our argument but the High Court disagreed with us citing the safety of both the victim and the students. If that offense has not been proven they are still innocent.

Their parents are very distraught and are in difficult times but I must tell you that they also empathize with the victim. The parents are also taken steps to assist the victim as they think of their sons”, Counsel for the accused persons Richard Adu Darko told the media shortly after proceedings.

Meanwhile, two other suspects including a police officer are facing court for committing a similar offense.

The officer, General L/Cpl Frank Adu-Poku stationed at Bomso, and a KNUST student were arrested for allegedly gang-raping a first-year student of the school.

Joel Osei Owusu, a Level 400 Business Administration student, is alleged to have lured the victim into his room at Ultimate Hostel, formerly Evandy Hostel, and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.

  • Andre Ayew unconcerned by his slow start to the season

Ghana captain Andre Ayew has had a difficult start to the season, scoring just one goal for Qatari giants Al Sadd, but the versatile player remains composed.

Ayew took Qatar by storm last season, scoring 15 goals in his debut to help Al Sadd win the Qatari Stars League. His impressive form quickly made him a fan favourite, and this hasn’t changed.

However, given his high expectations, Ayew has had a slow start. He was impressive during the preseason, scoring for fun. But he hasn’t been able to produce the goals for Al Sadd. In seven games, three in the league and four in Asian Champions League, Ayew has scored one goal.

It’s clearly unusual, but sources close to the player say he’s extremely calm and confident. Ayew sees this as a challenge that he is confident he will overcome. The former Swansea City player is working hard to regain his best form. Ayew wants to be in top shape for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Ayew will captain Ghana in their fourth appearance in the global showpiece. The goal is to make the semi-finals after narrowly missing out on the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

In the qualifiers, the 32-year-old set a good example by scoring big goals. His goal ensured Ghana‘s place in the playoffs. Due to a contentious suspension, he was unable to compete in the two-leg match against Nigeria.

But Ayew was in Kumasi for the first leg to motivate the players, and he was the first to call to congratulate them after they earned a 1-1 tie in Abuja to secure qualification.

Ayew is looking forward to a successful World Cup campaign for Ghana, in which he will play a key role.

The World Cup will start on November 20. Ghana will face Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay in the group stage.

Students of the Unity Hall have been surcharged to fix all those properties that have been destroyed.”

“Vehicles belonging to staff that have been vandalised will be fixed and handed back to them. CCTV cameras and other properties belonging to the Unity Hall have been destroyed. The halls will have to pay for all these because if they can allow those outside the school to join in these atrocities, they are the ones to be held liable.”

Students of the University hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Conti) clashed during a procession by some members of Katanga.

The clash ensued when students of Unity Hall refused to allow students of University Hall to use a route in front of their Hall for a procession.

The clash at KNUST comes as hall rivalries have received scrutiny in the wake of the violence at Mensah Sarbah Hall.

  • Economic crisis: It’s difficult to defend government now Edward Bawa

Bongo Member of Parliament, Edward Bawa, has mocked government communicators for staying mute on matters arising in the economy.

According to him, it is difficult for government communicators to defend the leaders at the helm of affairs in recent times due to the wobbling state of the local economy amidst the high inflation rate, increase in transport fares, and goods and services.

His comment comes after the PURC announced an increment in electricity and water tariffs which will take effect September 1, 2022.

Speaking on TV3 Key Points programme on Saturday, August 20, 2022, Edward Bawa said, “This is the most difficult time to defend government. The usual government communicators are not appearing in the media because it is difficult to defend government.”

It would be recalled that PURC on Monday, August 15, 2022, announced the new tariffs for electricity and water.

Electricity tariff was increased by 27.15% and water tariff was pegged at 21%.

According to PURC, these new tariffs will take effect from Thursday, September 1, 2022.

In a press statement sighted by GhanaWeb, the Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Ishmael Ackah, noted that, “In balancing the interests of service providers and consumers, the PURC acknowledged that the very economic variables that have occasioned the steep increases proposed by the service providers also affect consumers.”

“The Commission admitted, however, that some level of increases in utility tariffs were inevitable if the nation was to avoid another dumsor and its attendant effects including job losses. The Commission, therefore, decided to increase the average end-user tariff for electricity by 27.15% and water by 21.55% effective September 1, 2022,” part of the release read.

Dr. Ishmael Ackah further stated that these rates represented the positions of all stakeholders in the utility space in line with sections 3(c) of PURC Act 1997 (Act 538).

  • Ghanas history and culture displayed at the Akwaaba Festival

Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture, Janet Edna Nyame, has amplified the importance of projecting Ghanaian cultural values to the rest of the world.

She said Ghanaian cultural history is a powerful story that can be told through artifacts, food, clothing, and others.

Speaking to journalists at the launch of the Akwaaba Festival 2022 on August 18, 2022, she said, “the impression that it sends is that it is selling Ghana; it is portraying Ghana; it is selling Ghana; it is identifying what we have to let the outside world know that Ghanaians; first of all, the smile on the portrait depicts the hospitality Ghanaians have.”

The festival is expected to boost the Ghanaian economy by influencing and attracting investors to the country.

The National Commissioner on Culture further highlighted the economic benefits of the festival, saying “the patronage of the portrait will help the organizers to boost their economy and even the country as a whole, because when people come to buy, even though the money does not go to the government, it goes into individual pockets.”

The Akwaaba Festival is a platform that affords local producers, content creators, and service providers the opportunity to exhibit their creativity.

It also explains the rich history behind Ghanaian tradition and culture.

The Akwaaba Festival, according to the organizers, will boost the confidence of the diaspora in Ghanaian tradition and culture and also spur confidence in made-in-Ghana products.

  • We need a confident not cowardly president Afia Schwarzenegger shades Alan Kyerematen

Media personality, Afia Schwarzenegger, has been talking New Patriotic Party, NPP, and politics in her recent post on the social media platform, TikTok.

She zooms in on the presidential flagbearership race with emphasis on three frontline candidates Kennedy Agyapong, Alan Kyerematen, and Mahamudu Bawumia.

She dedicates the major part of her three-minute rant to Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen, who she describes as more cowardly than confident.

She cited how the Minister in times past resigned from the NPP after losing a presidential primary before returning at a later date.

“With all due respect to Mr. Alan Cash [referring to Alan Kyerematen], when you resign from a group and return, you join the queue from the back because the position is not reserved for you. So, you join from the back,” she said while mocking a recent pro-Alan walk in Kumasi as a gathering of drunkards.

“You needed to be a man and not to have packed your baggage and bolted. You claim your supporters were being hounded, but excuse me to say, you bolted from the internal competition, can you stand the NDC, can you stand the opposition?

“We need a president who is confident not a coward, not a president who bolts to Ukraine, flees in times of adversity. When a conflict arose, you run away to Yammousoukro and stayed there till things were okay, you packed and returned,” she charged.

On Kennedy Agyapong, with whom she has previously had public disagreements, she advised him to stay off the race because of his loud mouth and that delegates will only spend his money and not vote for him.

She jabbed Vice President Bawumia as a potential candidate who was always wearing a suit and talking about Ghana Card and digitalization whiles others are busily working against his bid.

The NPP is due to elect a new flagbearer for the 2024 election. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to hand over to a new president in January 2025 after the elections. The NPP will hold a conference to elect a flagbearer sometime next year.

  • Krobo enclave to remain in darkness after fault hampers return of power

Power was returned to Yilo and Manya Krobo municipalities after assurances by local government, but a fault meant the communities lost power within five minutes.

Simon Tetteh, the Lower Manya-Krobo MCE, said there are a few more challenges that needed addressing for the permanent return of power.

“If you call anybody from Lower-Manya Krobo, the rain is seriously falling here, but we are working hard to make sure power is restored,” the MCE added on Eyewitness News.

The two districts have been without power since July 27 amid a dispute over the installation of prepaid meters.

Mr. Tetteh said some residents heard a blast near a transformer during the brief return of power.

“What they detected is that during the challenging times, some people who were not qualified electricians tampered with some of them [the transformers],” he noted further.

The restoration of power is the first phase amid the drive to install prepaid metres which caused tensions in the enclave.

Sensitisation and engagements with the community are expected to continue and Mr. Tetteh said he believes “going forward, what we have experienced previously will not happen again.”

  • KMA devising new ways to generate more revenue – Sam Pyne

Mayor of Kumasi, Samuel Pyne, has said the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is devising proactive measures to shore up revenue to attend to numerous projects it plans to carry out.

Speaking on Garden City TV The Netflix effect: Why Western women are heading to South Korea in search of loveThursday morning, Sam Pyne revealed that the Assembly was currently spending 70% of its internally generated revenue (IGF) in offsetting costs it incurs in dealing with sanitation.

The mayor noted that the sanitation situation in the metropolis was draining the Assembly and therefore there was the need to look elsewhere for revenue sources to attend to its pressing needs.

He explained that the Assembly has had to deal with unsanitary conditions in the Central Business District (CBD) daily and elsewhere in Asafo and Bantama.

The Mayor disclosed that the Assembly has had to take drastic measures in dealing with revenue challenges and was currently exploring the idea of buying large tracts of land to go into commercial farming.

The Assembly, he noted wants to explore the growing of cereals and legumes as well as vegetables on a commercial scale.

The sale of these farm products when they are ready for the market, the Mayor noted would help the Assembly to secure more funds to attend to its pressing issues.

“We are very sure with this commercial farming project on stream we would have access to more revenue to deal with challenges confronting us as an Assembly”, Hon Pyne intimated.

As part of eliminating human tendencies including thievery and corruption from KMA, the Mayor said the Assembly has put in place a computerized system that ensures that all revenue due to it is accounted for properly.

Known as the Africa Smart Towns Network (ASToN), the system has eliminated the under-declaration of revenue as well as thievery that existed at KMA where some persons were assigned printed counterfoil receipts to rake in revenue into their pockets rather than the Assembly.

The Mayor revealed that since the implementation of the system, revenue due to the Assembly had been coming in full.

“We are committed to doing our best in getting the necessary revenue to tackle the commitments we have and to deal with challenges that confront us as an Assembly as well as deal with waste and filth that threaten the health of Kumasi residents”, the Mayor stressed.

  • Ghana to miss SDG goal 5 if decade old Affirmative Action Bill delays CDD cautions

The Center for Democratic Development (CDD) has cautioned that if the ten-year-old Affirmative Action Bill is not swiftly put into law, Ghana runs the risk of falling short of achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal on gender parity.

At a roundtable discussion conducted in the Ashanti Regional Capital Kumasi, the CSO that is collaborating with the Affirmative Action Bill Coalition emphasized Ghana’s glacial pace in passing the bill.

Conveners for the Affirmative action bill coalition Lawyer Sheila Minkah Premo described it as unacceptable that an affirmative action bill that should enforce mandatory recruitment and appointment of women into leadership positions had lagged on for over ten years.

“We have not given it enough priority. Currently, the bill is before the cabinet and we are calling on the government led by his Excellency the president to give approval so it can be sent to parliament to be passed,”

She further cautioned, “One of the international instruments that Ghana is looking at is the Sustainable Development Goal 5 which emphasizes gender parity. 2030 is close and we feel if it is not passed now.”

Ghana continues to lag woefully behind among countries with a good representation of women in governance and key public offices.

Out of 192 UN countries, Ghana ranks a poor 147th in women’s representation in governance and politics.

Parliament which should lead the charge is itself suspect; with only 14.5% Women MPs way below the African Average of 24%.

Executive Director of Women, Media and change, Dr. Charity Binka painted the rather uncomplimentary picture when she gave a lecture on the journey of the bill and its justifications for urgent attention.

“As at January 2021, Rwanda had 61% women representation in their parliament; South Africa 45.8%; Namibia 44.2; Senegal 43%; Mozambique 42; Ethiopia 38.8%and what is happening in Ghana is very very bad,” she bemoaned.

It gets worse at the local government level where out of the 6000 assembly members; only 216 are women.

The round table discussion on the need for a speedy passage of the affirmative action bill saw in attendance civil society organizations, the media, religious bodies and political parties.

Deputy Ashanti Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress Mary Awusie told Ultimate News until women are supported financially and in academic advancement, women will continue to struggle putting themselves forward for leadership positions even if the law was passed.

Apart from the Affirmative action bill which is struggling to see the light of day; Ghana has signed on to a number of international conventions on gender parity in national leadership.

It however appears the country is not showing the right commitments required to pass and operationalize same.

  • ‘I will be fit for the second leg’- Osman Bukari assures Red Star fans after injury

The 23-year-old Ghanaian Forward Osman Bukari has assured Red Star Belgrade fans he will be fit for their second leg clash in the UEFA Champions League playoff against Maccabi Haifa.

Bukari was forced off in the 60th minute of the first leg at the Sami Ofer stadium in Israel.

The promising attacker reveals it was for precautionary reasons, and will be ready for the second leg in Serbia.

“I felt a little pain in my muscle. I didn’t want to take any risks, that’s why I asked for a change. I will be ready for the second match,” Bukari told Israel’s Sport1.

Bukari is eyeing a UEFA Champions League group stage spot as he calls on fans of Red Star to come out in their numbers at the Marakana next Tuesday.

  • The real reason Mohammed Kudus is compelled to transfer to Everton

Mohammed Kudus has forced his exit from Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam as he is just hours from joining English Premier League side Everton,

The 22-year-old has informed Ajax’s leadership that he wants to leave the team in search of regular playing time, and is getting ready to leave for Liverpool as soon as possible on Saturday morning to finalize a loan move to the Toffees.

Sources revealed that his agents met the club’s bosses on Monday to demand the move away from the club.

It has been agreed that the player will be loaned to Everton with the option of a permanent purchase at the end of the season.

With the 2022 World Cup looming, Ghana’s talented playmaker does not want to risk his starting place in the Black Stars squad which led to his decision to demand the move.

Kudus has been unhappy over his bench role under coach Alfred Schreuder since the start of the season despite being the club’s most impressive player in the pre-season.

The utility player scored four goals in four matches for the Dutch giants in pre-season after recovering from a serious injury that blighted the blistering start to his Ajax career.

Having recovered from the injury and performed well during the pre-season, the Ghana playmaker was expecting more playing time this season but he has been consigned to the bench with substitute appearances.

With the Black Stars set to play in Qatar at the World Cup and beig a key player, Kudus insists he wants to be in the best shape to play for his country.

The Ghanaian midfielder joined Ajax from Danish side Nordsjaelland in the summer of 2020 for nine million Euros.

The attacking midfielder had a blistering start to his career at Ajax commanding first team place until injury in his opening UEFA Champions League match against Liverpool stalled his progress.

Although he is now fully fit again and excelled during the pre-season coach Schreuder has placed him on the bench.

Kudus has bluntly told the Dutch side he does not see himself as a bench warmer for another year which forced Everton boss Frank Lampard to swoop for his signature.

The personal terms for the player have been agreed with some few areas to be sorted out between Ajax and Everton.

  • Mexico missing students: Former top official arrested over probe

Mexico’s former attorney general has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of 43 students in 2014.

Jesús Murillo Karam, who led an inquiry into the atrocity, has been charged with forced disappearance, torture and the obstruction of justice.

The students vanished while traveling by bus through the city of Iguala on their way to a protest in Mexico City.

Other than bone fragments recovered from three of them, nothing is known of their fate.

Municipal police opened fire on buses carrying the students on the evening of 26 September 2014 – but what happened next is disputed.

Their mysterious disappearance sent shockwaves around the world and triggered widespread protests in Mexico against impunity and state complicity in organised crime.

Jesus Murillo Karam, who was arrested on Friday, led a controversial 2015 investigation into what happened to the students that blamed members of a cartel who were accused of killing them and burning their remains.

His findings, which were endorsed by then President Enrique Peña Nieto, were criticised by independent experts and relatives of the missing students for errors and for not apportioning any blame to the armed forces.

In a tweet, Mr Karam’s Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which is no longer in power, accused those behind Friday’s arrest of being politically motivated.

He is the highest-profile government official to be arrested in connection with the disappearance of the students so far.

Investigators believe the students were detained by corrupt police officials and then handed over to a drug cartel who mistook them for members of a rival gang before killing them.

On Thursday, a truth commission established by current President Andrés Manuel López Obrador accused soldiers of bearing some responsibility for the massacre – at least through negligence, if not directly.

“Their actions, omissions or participation allowed the disappearance and execution of the students,” said Alejandro Encinas, who is the commission’s head as well as Mexico’s deputy interior minister, according to AFP news agency.

But the full role of military personnel required further investigation, he added.

Earlier this year President López Obrador revealed that navy members were being investigated for allegedly tampering with evidence, including at the garbage dump where human remains were found.

On Friday, he called for any soldiers or officials involved in the disappearance to face justice.

“Publicising this atrocious, inhuman situation and at the same time punishing those responsible helps to prevent these deplorable events ever happening again,” the Mexican leader said, according to AFP news agency.

  • Al-Shabab: Islamists kill 10 in Somali hotel – reports

10 people have been killed after al-Shabab militants stormed a hotel in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, security officials say.

Police said attackers detonated two explosives outside the hotel before entering the building and opening fire.

They were reported to be holed up on the top floor of the Hotel Hayat, hours after the attack began.

A special police unit is said to have rescued dozens of guests and staff from the hotel.

“The security forces continued to neutralise terrorists who have been cordoned inside a room in the hotel building. Most of the people were rescued, but at least eight civilians were confirmed dead so far,” said an official, Mohamed Abdikadir.

Earlier, a website affiliated to al-Shabab said a group of militants had “forcibly entered” the hotel and were “carrying out random shooting”.

The Hayat is described as a popular location for employees of the federal government to meet.

Nine people were injured and carried away from the hotel, the head of Mogadishu’s Aamin ambulance services, Abdikadir Abdirahman told Reuters news agency earlier.

Unverified images circulating on social media appeared to show smoke billowing from the hotel while shouting and loud bangs can be heard.

“Two car bombs targeted Hotel Hayat,” a police officer told the Reuters news agency in a statement. “One hit a barrier near the hotel, and then the other hit the gate of the hotel. We believe the fighters are inside the hotel.”

An affiliate of al-Qaeda, al-Shabab has engaged in a long-running conflict with the federal government.

The group controls much of southern and central Somalia but has been able to extend its influence into areas controlled by the government based in Mogadishu.

In recent weeks fighters affiliated with the group have also attacked targets along the Somalia-Ethiopia border, which has raised concerns about a possible new strategy by al-Shabab.

The attack on Friday marks the first in the capital by the group since Somalia’s new president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, was elected in May.

  • BoGs 22% Policy Rate will help fight inflation Economist

Dr. Dennis Nsafoah, a US-based Assistant Professor of Economics at Niagara University, has stated that the decision by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to increase the Policy Rate from 19 per cent to 22 per cent will help fight the high inflation rate.

He added that it will also slow down the country’s demand to give supply time to catch up in dealing with the excess demand in the economy.

“We think the decision to increase the policy rate is a step in the right direction, even though it could have been done a month earlier. The increase in the policy rate serves two main purposes in the fight against inflation. First, it will slow down demand to give supply time to catch up in dealing with the excess demand in the economy” Dr. Dennis Nsafoah told journalists in Accra on Friday, August 19.

“In as much as some of the factors driving inflation are supply shocks, the Central Bank does not have the tools to deal with supply shocks. Neither should the Central Bank sit on the sidelines when inflationary pressures have spread across all sectors of the economy. The best response to inflation targeting the Central Bank, in this case, is to raise the policy rate.

“The second purpose of the decision, which we consider even more important, is that an increase in the policy rate will help anchor inflation expectations around the target. The tendency for inflation to persist occurs mainly because of inflation expectations. Inflation is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If markets expect inflation to be higher than target in future, inflation will be higher than target today.” Dr. Nsafoah explained.

Dr. Ernest Addison, the governor of the BoG, on Wednesday, August 17, stated at an emergency MPC meeting that the recent developments in the foreign exchange market showed elevated demand pressures, reflecting among others, the continued heightening of uncertainties in the global economy, rising inflation in many advanced economies and the resultant coordinated tightening of monetary policy stance by major central banks.

He added that it has further tightened global financing conditions with significant implications for Emerging Markets and Developing Economies (EMDEs), especially for those with weak fundamentals.

The US dollar, on the other hand, has strengthened against all major currencies. From the beginning of the year to date, the pound sterling has weakened against the US dollar by 12.4 per cent while the Euro has also weakened by 11.8 per cent. Countries similar to Ghana are all experiencing sharp depreciation to date.

The Ghana Cedi, Dr. Addison said, has depreciated by 25.5 per cent year-to-date, reflecting the Ghana specific situation, including the challenging financing of the budget from both domestic and external sources, downgrading of sovereign credit rating, nonresidents disinvestment in local currency bonds, and loss of reserve buffers.

“The execution of the budget for the year has remained challenging. Revenue has not kept pace with projections and created financing challenges. In the absence of access to the international capital market and given the constrained domestic financing, central bank overdraft has helped to close the financing gap as reflected in the mid-year budget review. The Bank of Ghana is working with the Ministry of Finance to agree on a cap on the overdraft.

“Whilst addressing the immediate financing problems, the ongoing policy discussions with the IMF are expected to address the underlying macroeconomic challenges, restore fiscal and debt sustainability and provide a sustainable balance of payments cushion.

“Under the circumstances, and considering the risks to the inflation outlook, the Committee decided on a 300 basis points increase in the Monetary Policy Rate to 22 per cent,” he stressed.

  • CCTV uncovers 5 culprits behind Katanga-Conti clash

Five individuals have so far been identified by a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) as the instigators of the clash on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Thursday .

Some of the students identified, according to reports, are allegedly students from Casely Hayford Hall at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

These students are said to have travelled to Kumasi to be part of the University Hall (Katanga) week celebrations but got  entangled in the brawl.

Some alumni of KNUST, who had visited the campus, were also part of the unfortunate incident.

The university authorities are still reviewing the footages and hope to identify more culprits.

“Those who are not students, we will handover their details to the police. The IGP is so much interested in this matter, because we need to bring a finality to this issue of hooliganism within the universities once and for all,” the KNUST University Relations Officer (URO), Dr Norris Bekoe said.

He said from now on, “any student who is rusticated, or dismissed from the university, we will publish the person’s details, reasons why the person is no longer fit to be our student, and then we will also add photographs and we will circulate this across the major media platforms so parents can identify and know.”

Dr Bekoe confirmed to Graphic Online that five people have been identified through the CCTV footages.

    Hall week activities suspended indefinitely

Meanwhile, the university management has suspended all hall week and SRC week activities on campus indefinitely.

This is following the violent clash between some members of the University Hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Continental) on Thursday, August 18, 2022.

Although management has set up a committee to look into the disturbance, it has also banned temporarily the massing up of students of any kind.

  • Ukraine’s Crimean fightback having ‘psychological impact’ on Russia

Ukrainian strikes on Crimea are having major psychological and operational effects on Moscow’s forces, Western officials have told journalists.

Explosions at the Saki airbase on 9 August and other assaults have put more than half of the Black Sea fleet’s naval jets out of action, they said.

The fleet has a revered history, but it has suffered a series of humiliations since the invasion began in February.

Officials said the setbacks have forced it to adopt a defensive posture.

In March, the fleet’s flagship, the cruiser Moskva, was sunk by Ukraine. The 510-crew missile cruiser had led Russia’s naval assault on Ukraine, and its sinking was a major symbolic and military blow.

At the time, the Russian defense ministry said ammunition on board the Moskva exploded in an unexplained fire, and the ship tipped over while being towed back to port.

In June, the fleet suffered another embarrassment when it was forced to abandon Snake Island, a tiny outpost in the north-west of the Black Sea seized by Russia on the first day of its invasion, after coming under sustained Ukrainian bombardment.

In recent weeks, the fleet’s home in the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014, has come under attack from Ukrainian forces.

At least eight fighter jets were destroyed in the bombardment of Saki airbase on 9 August.

Following the attacks, scores of holidaymakers were seen fleeing the peninsula, which was previously untouched by fighting. Images acquired by the BBC showed queues of traffic on roads leading out of Crimea three days after the attack.

The 9 August strikes were not the only apparent Ukrainian strikes in Crimea.

In July, Russian officials alleged that a Ukrainian drone attack forced an end to Navy Day celebrations in Sevastopol, and on 16 August there were explosions at at arms depot on the peninsula.

  • Residents of Kukurantumi protest the sale of family lands

Residents of Kukurantumi in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern Region thronged the streets on Friday to demonstrate against what they say is indiscriminate sale of family lands, allegedly by traditional authorities in the area.

They also contend that the forceful takeover of farmlands is threatening the peace of the area and has rendered farmers helpless and jobless.

Some of the demonstrators who shared their frustrations said these lands are being sold to estate developers and individuals.

The convener of the group, Kofi Okraku presenting a petition to the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly, called on government to intervene.

“The land belongs to families. The stool has got its own land. As I speak, there is another land which belongs to the stool. They removed the cocoa trees from it and sold it to sand winners, which are about 40-50 acres. Lands that were given to our grandparents; Kukurantumi lands, are not stool lands. They belong to families and individuals. Every family has its own lands.”

He claimed that one person has lost his life as a result of the land litigation.

“We are calling on the Okyehene to step into the matter so that we can have our lands back.”

The Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Umar Bondinga after receiving the petition commended the organizers for a peaceful demonstration and promised to forward it to the appropriate authorities for redress.

“I am assuring you that your petition will go to the appropriate quarters where you have directed me to send it that is the Okyeman council at Kyebi.”

“So far as you have submitted the petition, you should exercise restraint and let peace prevail in the town.”

  • Ethiopian Airlines pilots ‘overshoot runway after falling asleep’

Two pilots fell asleep at 37,000ft (11,000m), missing an airport runway before waking to safely land the plane, an aviation publication says.

Air traffic tried to contact them after they overshot the point of descent into Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa airport.

The pilots eventually woke up and landed the plane on its second approach, the Aviation Herald said.

The Ethiopian Airlines crew have been put on leave pending investigation, state-run news outlet Fana reported.

Monday’s passenger flight took off from Sudan’s Khartoum airport.

The Boeing 737, with a 154-seat capacity, normally takes less than two hours on its route between the neighboring countries.

Reactions to sleeping on the job ranged from sympathy with the pilots’ work schedule to shock that they fell asleep on the job.

“I wouldn’t cast blame on the Ethiopian crew specifically here – this is something that could happen to ANY crew in the world and it probably DID happen… The blame lies on the corporation and the regulators,” read one comment on the Aviation Herald website.

Another user suggested that there was only one solution: “Termination. End of story. Full stop.”

Others saw the funny side of the story, comment on Twitter, “Sleeping on the job taken to new heights!”

An aviation analyst called the incident “deeply concerning” on Twitter.

“Pilot fatigue is nothing new, and continues to pose one of the most significant threats to air safety – internationally,” tweeted aviation analyst, Alex Macheras

  • Elshafee El Sheikh: Ex-Briton ‘Isis Beatle’ sentenced to life in prison

An Islamic State group militant from the UK has been sentenced to life in prison by a US court for his involvement with a terror cell.

El Shafee Elsheikh, 34, was convicted in April of hostage-taking, conspiracy to murder US citizens, and supporting a terrorist organization.

Addressing the Sudanese-born Londoner, the judge called his actions “horrific, barbaric, brutal and criminal”.

Elsheikh was the highest profile IS fighter to stand trial in the US.

His actions are said to have resulted in the deaths of four US hostages.

Journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and aid workers Kayla Mueller and Peter Kassig were all kidnapped and killed at the hands of the cell.

Hostage families expressed a mixture of gratitude and disappointment for the outcome. Standing outside the courthouse on Friday, James Foley’s mother, Diane, called the sentencing a “hollow victory,” but said that it did show that “US justice will find you wherever you are”.

“Our country has lost four of its very best citizens. We families lost loved ones forever,” she said.

The sentencing came on the eight-year anniversary of Foley’s death. Mrs Foley told the BBC that when she first heard of her son’s death she thought it was “some cruel joke”.

Hostages said Elsheikh was part of a notorious cell nicknamed “the Beatles” – after the band – because of their British accents.

  • U.S. Air Force secretary: China’s actions around Taiwan increase risk

U.S. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said on Friday that China‘s actions around Taiwan increase the level of risk and he hoped that China’s behavior returns to the norms that were established before.

China, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has been staging military exercises this month to show its anger about a visit to Taipei of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, blaming Washington for the tension.

Kendall, speaking to reporters on a teleconference from the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam as part of a trip to the region that will also take in Australia and Japan, said: “We are living in a dangerous time”.

Referring to China’s drills around Taiwan, which included firing missiles over the island and repeatedly crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait, normally an unofficial barrier, he said Beijing was being very provocative.

“The military activities that China engaged in during the time of the speaker’s visit increased the level of risk and they violated a number of norms, crossing the line was one, firing into the exclusive economic zone of Japan was another, and firing over Taiwan itself was another,” Kendall said.

Japan said five of the missiles China fired landed in its economic zone.

“These are not actions that are designed to promote peace and stability in the region, they are very provocative and they increase the level of risk,” he said.

While Kendall declined to comment directly on the details of China’s crossing of the median line, he said China had overreacted to Pelosi’s trip.

“I would hope that their behavior returns to the norms that were established before,” he said.

China says Taiwan is the most sensitive and important issue in its ties with the United States, and that it has a right to ensure its security and defend its territorial integrity.

Taiwan’s government says that as the People’s Republic of China has never ruled Taiwan is has no right to claim it or decide its future, which can only be set by the island’s 23 million people.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has been overseeing an impressive military modernization programme, including developing stealth fighters and aircraft carriers, alarming many of its neighbors and the United States.

“I am concerned, I think it’s clear to say the United States is concerned, about China’s modernization programmes, and we’re also concerned about its behavior in the region,” Kendall said.

  • Police begins investigation into Katanga and Conti clash

Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, university relations officer at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), said the university is helping the police probe the issues that sparked the altercation between Katanga and Unity Hall.

Dr. Bekoe claims that because the entire university campus is networked and under the constant supervision of CCTV cameras, the police will be given access to pertinent footage to facilitate their inquiries.

Dr. Bekoe revealed on the Citi Breakfast Show that the incident from yesterday resulted in the destruction of roughly 9 staff members’ cars, while approximately 10 students had injuries of varying severity.

Reacting to the statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council which suggested that the council had picked intelligence that some students were likely to engage in violence following a similar clash at the University of Ghana, Dr. Bekoe maintained that the university campus had long been declared a security zone thus the police presence had been seen days before the clash.

He assured parents and the general public that calm had been restored to the university campus.

“In the process, they destroyed about 9 vehicles belonging to staff. The police called for reinforcement and calm was restored. There were about ten or eleven students who sustained various injuries, and they were rushed to the university hospital for attention.”

“As we speak, we are helping the police commence investigation into this, and fortunately we have networked the whole campus.”

“Management did not anticipate that there would be this kind of violence on campus. For the past two to three weeks, there has been police presence on campus because this place was declared a security zone long ago by the Regional Security Council, so there has been police presence on campus.”

“In fact, when the procession started, everything was going on peacefully until there was a trigger.”

  • NHS Covid pass down, leaving travellers struggling

The National Health Service(NHS) Covid Pass, which provides a digital record of a person’s vaccination status, has become inaccessible, leaving some travelers struggling to board flights.

Users trying to access their pass via the NHS app and website on Thursday were told it was unavailable.

“We are sorry the NHS Covid Pass is currently unavailable,” a message read.

“At this time there is no alternative route for accessing this information via the NHS App or online.

“If you have already downloaded the information then your access should not be affected.”

The requirement to show a pass to enter certain venues and events in the UK was scrapped earlier this year.

However, some countries still require travelers to show they have been vaccinated before allowing them to enter.

On social media, some holidaymakers said they had been unable to check in at airports because they were unable to prove their vaccination status.

NHS Digital tweeted: “We are aware of issues with availability of the NHS Covid Pass. We are investigating this urgently and will provide an update as soon as possible.

“We apologize for any issues this may cause and appreciate your patience as we work to resolve it.”

  • WFP: 22 million face starvation in horn of Africa

The number of people at risk of starvation in the drought-ravaged horn of Africa has increased to 22 million, according to the UN’s World Food Programme.

Years of insufficient rainfall across Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia have caused the worst drought in 40 years and conditions akin to famine in the hardest-hit areas, aid groups say.

An unprecedented four failed rainy seasons have killed millions of livestock, destroyed crops, and forced 1.1 million people from their homes in search of food and water.

“The world needs to act now to protect the most vulnerable communities from the threat of widespread famine in the Horn of Africa,” said WFP executive director David Beasley.

“There is still no end in sight to this drought crisis, so we must get the resources needed to save lives and stop people plunging into catastrophic levels of hunger and starvation.”

At the start of 2022, WFP warned that 13 million people across the three countries faced starvation, and appealed for donors to open their purses at a time of great need.

But funds were slow in coming, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine among other crises drawing attention from the disaster in the Horn, humanitarian workers said.

Russia’s invasion also sent global food and fuel prices soaring, making aid delivery more expensive.

By the middle of the year, when rain failed to appear again in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia, the number in extreme need soared to 20 million and warnings of famine grew more urgent.

WFP says by September, at least 22 million people could face starvation.

“This number will continue to climb, and the severity of hunger will deepen if the next rainy season… fails and the most vulnerable people do not receive humanitarian relief,” WFP said in a statement.

“Needs will remain high into 2023 and famine is now a serious risk, particularly in Somalia” where nearly half the population of 15 million is seriously hungry.

WFP said $418 million was needed over the next six months to help the worst-off.

Last month, the United States announced $1.2 billion in emergency food and malnutrition treatment to help avert famine in the Horn of Africa, and urged other nations to do more.

  • China’s Heatwave Cause Economy To Crumble

China is facing a record-breaking heat wave, and the country sounded off its first national drought alert late Thursday as parts of the Yangtze river have run dry.

Several regions are battling severe conditions, including mass power outages carried out by authorities, who have also urged businesses and residents to conserve energy.

These conditions have had a direct effect on the country’s economy. Supplier offices for huge corporations like Toyota and Apple have been ordered shut, as the government has asked most factories to halt production until the end of this week for planned power outages.

The poultry market in the country has been affected as hens are rejecting their feed and producing fewer eggs due to the extreme weather, a report said, citing AFP. As the grip of these extreme weather situations tightens on China, one of the leading economists from the country foreshadows the economy’s crumble, which could last many months.

Dan Wang, the chief economist of Hang Seng Bank, said Thursday that China’s heatwave “is a dire situation,” adding it could probably last for the next “two to three months easily,” CNBC’s Squawk Box Asia reported.

“It will affect those big energy-intensive industries and it will have [a] knock-on effect throughout the economy and even to the global supply chain,” she said. “We already see a slowdown in production in the steel industry, in chemical industry, in fertilizer industry.”

“Those are very important things when it comes to construction, to agriculture and also to manufacturing in general,” Wang added.

She also predicted the losses incurred to China’s GDP growth will surpass that caused by 2021’s power outages.

“Last year, as we have estimated, the power shortage period has caused China about a 0.6% point of GDP growth. This year we think this number will be a lot higher… I would say 1.5% point lower,” Wang said.

Outlining the predicted full scope of losses, Wang said, “Right now, we are giving 4% of GDP growth for the full year. If the current situation continues, then I have to say the growth rate is probably below [3%]”.

According to China’s emergency ministry late Thursday, severe weather conditions have caused direct economic losses amounting to $400 million in July alone.
