Recently, there were reported cases of mysterious killings in Sefwi Wiawso, Sefwi Anhiwaso, Sefwi Chirano and specially Sefwi Bekwai and its environs; a situation which is a major source of worry for traditional authorities.

In a statement, Paramount Chief of Sefwi Chirano and Vice President of the Western North Regional House of Chiefs, Okogyeman Kwaku Gyamprah II, said, “I have been devastated by this ill development as the traditional ruler of my area, and hereby extend my condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased.”

In July, an 11-year-old girl was believed to have killed herself in Sefwi Wiawso.

Weeks later, the headless body, of a 27-year-old woman, was found in an uncompleted building at Sefwi Bekwai.

These developments and several others have heightened fears in the communities, with the traditional council asking the security apparatus to expedite actions in addressing the state of insecurity.

“I, therefore, condemn this act and unequivocally state that, under no circumstance, should any human being lose his or her life in such a circumstance. I am passionately appealing to the security agencies to do the best thereof, in order to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to book in earnest”, the statement added.

Ebenezer Cresent Mamprobi in Accra featured athletes from six of the eight regions where Wushu is currently practiced in Ghana.

    Bouts

A total of eight bouts including two exhibition fights were held on the night.

Hanifi Hamadu from Tamale decision Safaian Abdul from Wa with strong low kicks and non-stop aggression while Osuman Mensah who was leading on the judges’ score cards bizarrely quit midway through the third round of his bout against Abdul Saeed on account of exhaustion.

The female Wushu practitioners shocked the crowd with a fierce clash involving Roseline Quarshie (Volta) and Winnie Abubakari (Accra) which ended in a draw.

In another interesting matchup, Richard Elly (Accra) and Muhammad Ali (Accra) were both disqualified for not adhering to the rules of Wushu. Referee Charles Samuel Botchway bought the bout to an early end to avoid any serious injury to either athlete.

Abdul Mateen Shaidu edged Sulemanu Mensah in a close competitive fight with more accurate kicks to the body which earned him victory by decision.

Three other fights involving Michael Asante and Mubarak Muhammad; Samuel Obese Tagoe and Godfred Asharley Phorson; and Joseph Bolor and Robert Addo ended in draws.

  • African governments charged to institutionalise Agricultural risk management systems

The Platform for Agricultural Risk Management (PARM) has called on African governments to institutionalise Agricultural Risk Management (ARM) system by integrating strategies and investments into national agricultural policies.

That, PARM noted, would stimulate productive and sustainable investment across the food and agricultural value chain to ensure food and nutrition security, and help reduce hunger and poverty.

Mrs Francesca Nugnes, Capacity Development Specialist at PARM, said this at the just ended Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) 2022 Regional Conference in Accra.

The conference had a session on climate finance and risk management for African Agriculture and another on connecting ecosystems actors for West Africa female entrepreneurs.

It was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal and Fishery Resources of Burkina Faso and the Ministry of Livestock and Animal Protection of Senegal.

Mrs Nugnes noted that food and agricultural markets in Africa were affected by several macro-economic challenges, which had become more prevalent because of climate change.

They include oil price shocks, disease outbreaks, and adverse weather events, such as floods and droughts.

Therefore, she said, there was the need for governments across the continent to institute policy reforms and implement them effectively to ensure that the underlying approaches to risk management were addressed to make the sector resilient.

She called for a dialogue among stakeholders, including academics, producer organisations, financial institutions and governments to nurture and sustain ARM tools.

Dr Fatou Ka, Director of the National Training Centre for Livestock and Animal Industries Technicians in Senegal, spoke on the knowledge and information sharing.

He noted that it was important to raise awareness among small farmers and their organisations on agricultural risk management both at the local and national levels.

The Director said: “In Senegal, for example, information sharing is done by the Agricultural Advisory Office through agricultural and rural Advisors who are members of the (LDC).

“The sharing of information on agricultural risks is not only done through the LDC but also through other bodies such as the Village Committee, Community Radio, and Women Associations who support these efforts by relaying information to their bases.”

Mrs Francine Ilboudo, the Head of the Department for Partnership and Private Investments in the rice sector, cited the example of Burkina Faso, where the Government had made ARM a national priority.

She said that had been done through the National Council for Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation (CONASUR), created in 2004, and the creation of the multi-risk contingency plan (2009) and the contingency plans regional (2012).

The programmes adopted strategies for the prevention and reduction of the disastrous effects of natural disasters as well as mainstreaming climate resilience and disaster risk reduction actions.

  • Students loan defaulters to face prosecution next month

Beneficiaries of students loan who have defaulted in the repayment of their loans for over 10-year will from September this year be prosecuted.

The Chief Executive Officer of the SLTF, Nana Kwaku Agyei Yeboah, who made this known to the Daily Graphic last Monday in an interview, said the Trust was compelled to resort to legal action as several reminders to the affected persons had been ignored and it was part of the efforts to meet its set recovery target of GH¢ 70 million, for this year.

“We consistently keep reminding people through their guarantors, text messages and other communication -emails, etc. as well as publish names and faces on our platforms and in the dailies.

“They have simply ignored all those and so we are resorting to the final action by sending the recalcitrant borrowers to court, prosecute them to get the money back.

“This month is the final grace period, if they still refuse to do the needful from all the reminders and prompts, September is prosecution time to recover the loans,” he emphasised.

    Act, prosecution

The Students Loan Trust Fund Act, 820 (2011) prescribes various steps that the SLTF must take in the recovery of loans.

Among the prescribed steps are consistently sending reminders through emails, text messaging and also through their guarantors as well as the publication of pictures and details of defaulting borrowers in the national media.

Over the years, the fund has deployed many of the prescribed measures in loan recovery, but was yet to drag anyone to court for defaulting in repayment.

Mr Yeboah said since prosecution was one of the measures, the  SLTF had, therefore, resolved, in accordance with its Act, “ to begin prosecution of defaulters” to ensure that the scheme was sustained.

He explained that prosecution would specifically target only those who had refused to make any efforts to have an agreed repayment plan, particularly, beneficiaries whose repayment period of 10 years had elapsed.

    Sensitisation month

Mr Yeboah  indicated that the SLTF had set aside the month of August as recovery month to sensitise people to the repayment of their loans.

“The SLTF sets aside one month in each year to educate the general public, particularly, beneficiaries of the loan scheme on the importance of loan repayment to the sustainability of the fund.

“The month is also used to disseminate information on the various repayment platforms available to borrowers. This year, the Recovery Month has been slated for August,” he said.

    No guarantor

The SLTF CEO said with the introduction of the free senior high school programme and opportunity for more to continue to the tertiary level, the fund had seen an increase in the number of loan applications, which made recovery of due loans even more critical.

Also with the implementation of the “No guarantor” policy, “there has been an even greater increase in loan applications and SLTF offices across the country have been processing large volumes of applications. We therefore, need to recover the loans so that others can benefit.”

“Over the past few years, the fund has put in place a number of strategies to recover loans, including the introduction of several electronic payment platforms to afford convenience to borrowers in repaying their loans.“

On the significance of the repayment of the loans, Mr Yeboah said there was the need to run a fund that was solvent to justify the existence of the trust fund and “that depends on our ability to recover loans given to borrowers to keep it in operation”.

“Though we get other sources of funding from the GETFund, telecommunications tax and even the Government of Ghana, we also need to do our recovery.

“Repayment is thus very critical to our very survival. We need to get the money that we have given out to be able to support other students who will require that kind of support,” he emphasised.

    Recovery

Mr Yeboah said the SLTF, this year, opened two new regional offices, one in Accra and the other in Kumasi, to focus exclusively on loan recovery.

He explained that the trust fund recovered loans given to students all-year-round and using the month of August to educate people on repayment did not mean that only August was being used to recover loans taken by borrowers.

“Recovery of loans is an all-year-round activity, but a month is set aside for an aggressive campaign and sensitisation during when we go out there to remind people of repayment.

“We do this because sometimes, people tend to forget, and may not even remember the payment points.

“For some time now, we have carried out the exercise in August, so this year we are going round again with an intensified educational campaign to get defaulters to pay back loans they had taken,” he explained.

    Credit history

The SLTF CEO maintained that apart from recovery of the loans to enable other students to benefit, the loan repayment would also help borrowers to build their credit history which was very important as the country became digitised.

The trust fund, he said, would report to the credit bureau all payments that would be made and that it would also inform the banks, and added that “as you are paying and we are reporting, you are getting good credit history.”

He said the trust fund was not demanding the upfront payment of all the money people owed it, and that people who were hard up could visit it to discuss and agree on a convenient repayment plan.

  • Kotoko inquire about re-signing Umar Bashiru from Karela

Ghana Premier League champions Asante Kotoko have asked about the availability of talented Karela United midfielder Umar Bashiru.

The former Kotoko midfielder was a delight to watch last season as he starred for Karela United after relaunching his career there.

Asante Kotoko is intent on building their depleted midfield with the departure of Fabio Gama on a free transfer and also the sale of deputy skipper Mudasiru Salifu.

Richmond Lamptey has also been handed a 30-month ban from football for now making the club light in the middle.

Umar Bashiru was impressive for Karela last season as he scored 13 goals and also provided 2 assists in the league.

Kotoko has officially written to express interest in acquiring the services of Umar Bashiru and Augustine Randolph from Karela.

Umar Bashiru’s form has earned him a place in the Black Galaxies set-up as he set up the winner in the second leg clash against Benin.

  • Telecel to renegotiate for stake in Vodafone Ghana after government rejects initial proposal

Telecommunications Company, Telecel Group has stated that it is ready to re-engage the government after its initial disapproval to acquire a 70% stake in Vodafone Ghana.

Telecel Group confirmed that it has signed a Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Vodafone to acquire a 70% percent stake in Vodafone Ghana and this is currently pending regulatory approval.

In a statement by the telecom company, it said, “Telecel Group and Vodafone have been in touch with Ghana’s Ministry for Communications, Bank of Ghana, and the National Communications Authority, to finalize all the regulatory requirements related to this transaction.”

“We have received their responses which have not granted the approvals yet and Telecel is willing to re-engage soon after putting together the necessary clarifications,” it further stated.

The acquisition is fully financed by Telecel Group and its partners.

Telecel however confirmed that the potential sale of Vodafone Ghana Towers is not part of the acquisition funding,

“Telecel hopes to successfully conclude this transaction and looks forward to engaging with staff and customers, who are important to the business.”

The company noted that Ghana’s business climate suits its business models and was the key enabling factor based on which the Group was able to reach an agreement with Vodafone.

It further disclosed that, “Telecel Group has already made investments in Ghana as part of the Africa Startup Initiative Program “ASIP”, and it intends to spend around 500 million USD in the first three years to expand and refinance Vodafone’s network across the country.”

Meanwhile, Communications and Digitalisation Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has confirmed that the group seeking to purchase majority shares in Vodafone Ghana was denied regulatory approval.

This comes after a report by Bloomberg said the parent company, Vodafone PLC, had agreed to sell its operations in Ghana to Telecel Group, a British telecommunications giant.

Providing an update on the takeover, the Communications Minister, speaking on Accra-based Asaase Radio revealed, “They were denied regulatory approval earlier this year. I am surprised at the news going around.”

“Vodafone notified the President; I think sometime last year of their intention to exit the Ghana market since they were majority shareholders of the company (70 percent). They have been through the process of seeking a new investor for their 70 percent shares and identified Telecel as that investor,” she disclosed.

  • How Dawu Youngsters used to fix matches in Ghana Premier League – Former chairman narrates

Former Dawu Youngster Chairman, Seth Yeboah, has revealed that during his time as chairman, he was involved in fixed matches but his team played it competitively unlike recent fixed matches in the Ghana Premier League.

Seth, who is now a Chief in Dawu and goes by the name Nana Tufuhene Yeboah I, revealed that struggling teams in the league negotiate to settle the opposing team’s winning bonus in exchange for a win.

In an interview with Ernest Brew Show, Tufuhene Yeboah detailed how teams negotiate to play matches of convenience in the 90s and the early 2000s.

“I went to people(seeking help) and others also came to me. Maybe, you need it because if you lose this match, your team will be relegated. So, when you negotiate and both agree, you will be helped. For instance, if my players lose a match and it was not their fault, they will take the winning bonus. So, you will pay the winning bonus for them. So I will tell the captain that there is an agreement with this team, and they will pay your winning bonus,” he said.

When asked whether he believes there is a football administrator who has never engaged in match-fixing, Tufuhene answered that none exits.

“Those of us who are into football, we know what’s going and we are not surprised. Then he is a lair, all football administrators are one. With the cost in football, when you imagine the struggles you will go through in the first division (second tier), and if you are not lucky you will be relegated to the second division(third tier). So if I can negotiate and pay your players’ winning bonus for you to help me not to get relegated, I think it is normal.”

He concluded that because there were rules prohibiting match-fixing, fixed matches were played competitively, as appeared differently in relation to Ashantigold-Inter Allies’ in the 2020/2021 season.

“Even in those days, when you are caught, you will be punished. It’s not only today. You cannot make it obvious. It is there but you cannot fix a match and play like Goldfield(Ashanti Gold) did. You will play it competitively even the referee won’t notice.”

On May 16, 2022, the GFA Disciplinary Committee found AshantiGold and now Division One side Inter Allies guilty of playing a match of convenience in 2021.

As a result, both teams have been relegated to the country’s third-tier league. In the said match, AshantiGold won 7-0 with Inter Allies scoring two deliberate own goals.

Dawu Youngster FC was founded in 1987. The Club enjoyed nine seasons of top-flight football from 1990/91 to 2001/02.

In their last GPL season, they finished 15th in a 16-team league with 30 points in 2002, winning 7, losing 14, and drawing 9.

A Federal High Court in Lagos State in Nigeria on Thursday sentenced 20 Ghanaian fishermen to one-year imprisonment each for transporting 13.670 kilogrammes of marijuana, aka cannabis, from Ghana to Nigeria.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo convicted and sentenced them after finding them guilty of the charges of conspiracy and unlawful transportation of the drug reports the Punch.

They were sentenced on Thursday, August 4, 2022.

The convicted fishermen include Francis Teye, Kweke Komel, Gad Adjah, Theophilus Tetteh, Kwesi Aboagye, Ekon Fynn, Kwamena Baah, Kwabina Adjei, Micheal Okutu, Isaac Kofi, Kweku Moko, Kwezi Adzi and Kweku Mensah.

Others are Micheal Kofi, Ekon Bentum, Kwesi Amissah, Joshua Huago, Otu Otipeseku, Isaac Yorsson and Nana Kodwo.

The convicts were arrested with the drug conveyed from Ghana into the Nigerian territorial waters on January 14, 2022.

They were arraigned on two counts of conspiracy and unlawful transportation of the substance.

The prosecutor, Mr Fingere Owen, told the court that the offences were contrary to and punishable under sections 11(b) and 14(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges.

Following their guilty pleas, the prosecutor reviewed the facts of the case.

Owen also tendered some exhibits and urged the court to convict and sentence them in accordance with the sections they were charged with.

However, lawyers to the convicts, Mr Uche Okoronkwo, who led Calistus Onyewueke, both of Minerva Legal Practice, told the court that all the defendants were first time offenders without previous criminal records.

Okoronkwo told the court that his clients were fishermen, who were engaged by a purported customer, who did not tell them the content of the bag.

Justice Oweibo sentenced them to one-year imprisonment each, the Punch reported.

The judge also ordered that the sentence should commence from the date of their arrest.

He, however, ordered the convicts to pay the sum of N50,000 each in lieu of the sentence and ordered that the boat used in smuggling the banned substance be forfeited to the Federal Government.

  • Resolve LPG supply issues to end tanker drivers strike COPEC to government

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC-GH) has urged the government to immediately resolve pending Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) issues with industry players to restore the supply of the product in the country.

It said the Ghana National Tanker Drivers Association (GNTDA); Liquified Petroleum Gas Marketing Companies (LPGMCS) and the Ghana Liquefied Petroleum Gas Operators Association (GLIPGOA) had withdrawn their services effective yesterday because their concerns had lingered for a long.

A statement issued in Accra yesterday by COPEC Executive Secretary, Duncan Amoah, said consumers would continue to bear the brunt as all LPG outlets remain non-operational.

It said the concerns of the industry players included general welfare and a ban on all new LPG sites which has affected their operations and finances over the past five years.

According to COPEC, the strike by GNTDA energized the others to join, following unsuccessful attempts by the group to get their issues resolved both by the Ministry of Energy and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

Touching on the genesis of the problems, it said after the Atomic gas explosion about five years ago, the NPA under its former Chief Executive, HasanTampuli, directed the freezing of the permits of a number of stations under construction.

“Several years down the line and this ban is yet to be lifted thereby leaving the various companies who had invested heavily in the construction of these retail points heavily debt distressed as they are constantly harassed by their banks and other financial entities who had advanced various loans to put up these stations,” it said.

According to COPEC, the ban had led to about an 11 percent reduction in volumes for the operators over the past one year instead of a projected 15 percent increase year on year.

The statement said efforts by actors within the LPG space to get the issues resolved had all proven futile because authorities do not seem to understand the pressures the operators were going through.

“We call on the NPA under the leadership of Dr. Mustapha Hamid to ensure a speedy resolution of the deadlock between the operators and authorities to ensure the immediate reopening of these outlets across the country.

“We further call on the Energy Ministry to ensure all grievances of the various operators within the LPG space are attended to forthwith without fail as the looming pressures on the Ghanaian LPG user could only exacerbate with further delays in addressing these challenges,” it said.

The accused was remanded when he appeared before the Ofaakor Circuit Court in the Awutu Senya East Municipality, presided over by Mr Ebenezer Osei Darko, to allow for further investigations.

He is scheduled to reappear in court on Wednesday, August 17, 2022.

According to the facts presented in Court, Darko, a self-styled evangelist traditionally adopted the 15-year-old boy two years ago under the guise of spiritually cleansing him but kept sodomizing him and threatened him with death if he ever disclosed it to anyone.

He had told the boy’s mother that a woman spiritually took his luck when he was a child and so needed to be cleansed spiritually to restore his glory.

The victim later experienced severe illness and pain in the waist and anus and opened up and narrated his ordeal to his mother when she persistently questioned him over complainants he made to her about the pains, the court heard.

  • I threatened to quit Accra Academy before Asamoah Gyan was admitted – J.E Sarpong

Veteran coach J.E Sarpong recounted the lengths he had to go to before Ghana’s all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan was admitted into Accra Academy for his secondary school education.

He says that the then headmistress of the school was averse to admitting Asamoah Gyan into the school and he had to go on a two-week strike and threaten to quit the school before Gyan was accepted into the school.

“The Head Mistress say no when I recommended that they give him (Asamoah Gyan) admission to Accra Academy,” he told Ernest Brew Smith.

“I threatened to quit the job and that forced her hand to admit him after sitting away from work for two weeks,” he revealed.

Coach Sarpong saw the talents of Gyan and honed and nurtured his talents into a top asset for the nation.

Gyan has admitted on countless occasions the outstanding role coach Sarpong played in his career as a football, especially as a youngster.

He even honoured the veteran coach during the launch of his biography this year at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra.

Asamoah Gyan who is Ghana’s all-time scorer with 51 goals in 109 matches has been without a club since leaving Legon Cities two seasons ago.

  • EduWatch calls for interdiction of Duadaso SHS headteacher over exam malpractices

An Education Think Tank, Africa Education Watch, has asked the Ghana Education Service to interdict Peterson Aning, the headmaster of the Duadaso Senior High Technical School in the Bono Region, as well as a few other members of staff for examination malpractices.

In an investigative piece by Corruption Watch, it was revealed that the headmaster and staff of the school allegedly connived with invigilators to supervise grand cheating by candidates of the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Speaking to Citi News, the Executive Director of the Education Think Tank, Kofi Asare said the actions constitute a breach of the code of ethics of the GES hence its call for a full-scale probe into the matter.

“We saw headmasters lead a team of teachers engaging in corruption, writing answers for students and dictating for students to write in the full glare of teachers and invigilators.”

Africa Education Watch also urged the GES to close down the All for Christ Senior High Technical School in the Bono Region for a similar offence.

Mr. Asare said the school “has gained notoriety for being the hub of examination malpractice in Ghana.”

“I think it is time that the education service activates its powers… and close down the school,” he said.

Mr. Asare further warned that the “continued existence of that school is inimical to the interests of the Ghanaian public.”

“We want to impress on WAEC to withdraw or to permanently revoke the licence or centre accreditation for All For Christ Senior High School.”

Former regional and constituency executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been given a week ultimatum to turn over any party vehicles and other items they may still be in possession of.

The party in a letter signed by the newly elected General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah explained that the decision is as a result of a widespread concerns and complaints by current executives to the effect that some of their predecessors still have in their custody party vehicles and other assets.

According to the Mr. Frimpong Koduah, the action of the ex-party officers has rendered newly elected executives handicapped in the performance of their duties.

The party has thus instructed the national treasurer to supervise the retrieval of all assets from former regional executives of the party.

The latest directive comes barely a month after the party held its national executive elections.

  • Killing of al Qaeda’s Zawahiri is ‘justice for 9/11 victims’ – Joe Biden

Justice has been delivered to victims of the September 11 attacks following the killing of Ayman Al Zawahiri, the known leader of al-Qaeda terrorist group.

The US government through President Joe Biden announced this week that al Zawahiri had been killed by two Hellfire missiles in a targeted operation in Afghanistan.

Biden, who was kept abreast of the strike against Zawahiri as he isolated with a rebound case of Covid-19, spoke outdoors Monday, August 1, from the Blue Room Balcony at the White House.

Zawahiri, Biden said, “was deeply involved in the planning of 9/11, one of the most responsible for the attacks that murdered 2,977 people on American soil. For decades, he was the mastermind of attacks against Americans.”

“Now, justice has been delivered and this terrorist leader is no more. People around the world no longer need to fear the vicious and determined killer,” he continued.

“The United States continues to demonstrate our resolve and our capacity to defend the American people against those who seek to do us harm. We make it clear again tonight, that no matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide, if you are a threat to our people, the United States will find you and take you out.”

The President said the precision strike targeting was the result of the “extraordinary persistence and skill” of the nation’s intelligence community.

“Our intelligence community located Zawahiri earlier this year — he moved to downtown Kabul to reunite with members of his immediate family,” Biden said.

The strike comes one year after Biden ordered the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, prompting Taliban forces to rapidly seize control of the nation.

Biden said on Monday that when he withdrew US troops from the country, he “made the decision that after 20 years of war, the United States no longer needed thousands of boots on the ground in Afghanistan to protect America from terrorists who seek to do us harm, and I made a promise to the American people, that we continue to conduct effective counterterrorism operations in Afghanistan and beyond. We’ve done just that.”

Biden pledged that Zawahiri “will never again allow Afghanistan to become a terrorist safe haven, because he is gone and we’re going to make sure that nothing else happens.”

The President concluded by expressing gratitude to US intelligence and counterterrorism communities, saying that he hopes Zawahiri’s death will bring some measure of closure to the friends and families of 9/11 victims.

“To those who continue to seek to harm the United States, hear me now: We will always remain vigilant and we will act — and we will always do what is necessary to ensure the safety and security of Americans at home and around the globe,” he concluded.

  • The public relations and ad firms refusing fossil fuel clients

Up until three years ago, PR and advertising firm boss Marian Ventura was more than happy to work on projects for oil and gas companies.

“I felt I was pushing change from the inside, collaborating to enhance their transparency and accountability,” says the founder of Done!, which is based in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

She says that in Latin America the fossil fuels industry is considered “prestigious”. “They sponsor every sustainability event or prize in the region, and of course they are the ‘best clients to have, for their big budgets.”

Then in 2019, Ms Ventura’s feelings started to shift when she decided to certify her business as a so-called “B Corp” organisation. This is a global certification scheme whereby firms aim to meet the best possible social and environmental standards.

“As a B company, we know that in order to fulfil our corporate purpose we cannot turn a blind eye to these questions: Who am I selling to? What am I selling? Will I be proud of what I am selling in 10 years?,” says Ms Ventura.

Image caption, While a small but growing number of advertising and PR firms now won’t work with fossil fuel firms it is important to remember that many others still do so

As a result, she started to reduce her oil clients, but in 2021 she went one step further.

Last year, she decided that Done! would become one of the now 350 advertising and PR firms who have joined a movement called Clean Creatives. Joining the movement means they pledge to refuse any future work for fossil fuel firms, or their trade associations.

“We dropped off at least four active clients related to oil and gas, and refused a dozen quotation requests, that actually keep coming,” says Ms Ventura.

She adds that her decision has come in for criticism. “People with whom we have stronger relationships, told me that they don’t agree with our position, because they believe oil and gas are irreplaceable resources for society, and they assure it can be developed in a responsible way.”

Speaking on the subject back in April, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said “some government and business leaders are saying one thing, but doing another”. He added: “High‑emitting governments and corporations are not just turning a blind eye, they are adding fuel to the flames.”

Meanwhile, a report this year by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change said that “corporate advertisement and brand building strategies may also attempt to deflect corporate responsibility”. The study went on to ask whether tighter advertising regulation was required.

Duncan Meisel, director at US-based Clean Creatives, says he sees a shift happening. “We know there’s agencies not taking the pledge who have told us privately that they are no longer pitching to fossil fuel clients. It’s a step forward.”

Duncan Meisal, leftImage source, Adam A. Schuett
Image caption, Duncan Meisal, left, and his organisation Clean Creatives have seen 350 ad and PR firms sign up

He adds: “The fossil fuel industry uses advertising agencies and PR agencies to make it harder for governments to hold them accountable. And ads are misleading and make companies seem more committed to climate action than they really are.”

Some advertising firms are, however, continuing with fossil fuel clients, such as the UK’s WPP, whose subsidiaries have worked with the likes of BP, Shell and Exxon Mobile.

“Our clients have an important role to play in the transition to a low carbon economy and how they communicate their actions must be accurate,” says a WPP spokesman. “We apply rigorous standards to the content we produce for our clients, and seek to fairly represent their environmental commitments and investments.

“We will not take on any client, or work, whose objective is to frustrate the policies required by the Paris Agreement [on climate change].”

Image caption, Fossil fuel firms have been big earners for advertising and PR firms since the early 20th Century

Meanwhile, the world’s largest PR firm Edelman, was at the end of last year criticised for its work for fossil fuel companies. Its clients have included the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers, and also Exxon Mobile.

The US headquartered firm subsequently carried out a 60-day review of its climate strategy, and boss Richard Edelman said in a company blog post in January that it might have to “part ways” with clients not committed to net zero emissions.

Edelman declined to give a subsequent comment to BBC News for this article.

Oil and gas trade association, Offshore Energies UK (OEUK), says it is wrong to criticise PR and advertising firms that work with the energy sector.

“Pressuring agencies to avoid working with companies involved oil and gas is counter-productive to combatting climate change, as they’re also the ones with the decades of energy expertise that are developing and rolling out the cleaner technologies that are needed,” says OEUK external relations director, Jenny Stanning.

A spokesperson for the Advertising Association says that it does not believe the fossil fuel industry should be banned from advertising “but we do recognise the right for individual companies to decide who they do and don’t work with”.

“Accuracy and honesty in all advertising is paramount,” he adds. “This is an area carefully regulated by both the CMA [Competition and Markets Authority] and ASA [Advertising Standards Authority], which expects advertisers to be able to show evidence for any claims they make on the environmental impact of the products and services they feature.

“We believe in the freedom of speech, and Clean Creatives are exercising that right. Our end goals are the same i.e. net zero, but we think a more nuanced approach is required.”

Image caption, Solitaire Townsend has given a Ted Talk entitled Are Ad Agencies, PR Firms and Lobbyists Destroying the Climate?

She says that more and more firms in her industry will have to follow suit – if they wish to attract the best staff.

“A lot of agencies will come to the point where they have to make the decision if they want to be able to recruit the brightest,” says Ms Townsend. “The young ones don’t want to work with oil and gas [clients].”

  • TJ Maxx and Marshalls sold dangerous baby products after they were recalled

TJX, which operates popular discount chains TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Home Goods, agreed to pay a fine of $13 million for selling recalled infant products that had been removed from the market due to risks of infant suffocation and death.

The recalled products the company continued selling included Kids II Rocking Sleepers, Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleepers and Fisher-Price Inclined Sleeper Accessory for Ultra-Lite Day & Night Play Yards.

The Kids II Rocking Sleepers were linked to five infant deaths and the the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play sleepers were connected to more than 30 infant deaths over 10 years.

The agreement with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, announced on Tuesday, charges that the company knowingly sold, offered for sale, and distributed about 1,200 of the recalled products from March 2014 through October 2019.

The products were sold in TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Home Goods stores as well as online. The agency said federal law prohibits the sale, offer for sale or distribution of a consumer product that has been recalled.

In 2019, TJX and and the CPSC had jointly announced that the retail operator had sold these recalled products and that it had subsequently found three additional recalled products in its inventory.

TJX (TJX), in addition to paying the fine, said it will institute a program to ensure that it complies with the Consumer Product Safety Act. At the same time, TJX said the settlement does not constitute an admission by the company, nor a determination by the CPSC, that it knowingly violated the Safety Act.

  • Warren Buffett has another reason to hate Robinhood

The Oracle of Omaha has been sparring with the online brokerage platform since 2021. Until now, the fight has been over a difference in their philosophical views of the stock market.

A recent paper by three academics may have made it more personal, though.

At more than $440,000 per share, there typically isn’t a lot of trading activity around Buffett’s prized Berkshire Hathaway A (BRKA) stock: Between 2010 and 2020, an average of 375 shares were exchanged daily. Then, in February 2021, trading volume shot up to nearly 2,000 shares per day, where it’s remained ever since.

Robinhood to cut 23% of its workforce, revenue sinks 44%

The increased activity captured the attention of market watchers but remained a mystery. Some speculated that there was a superbuyer scooping up the stock.

But research published last month by professors at University of California, Berkeley, Columbia Law School and Cornell University found that the turbo boost in trading hasn’t been the result of any superbuyer. Instead, volumes of the most expensive stock in the US have been artificially inflated by the way brokers like Robinhood report fractional trading.

The increases come from what researchers call “phantom, non-existent trading.” When a brokerage makes a private, off-exchange stock trade, like the fractional trades executed by Robinhood, they are required to report the trades to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority as though they were for a full share. Under this “rounding up rule” an investment as small as 1/100th of a share in Berkshire Hathaway would count as a purchase of a full $440,000 share.

Researchers say that this “well-intentioned but misguided” FINRA rule has added an additional volume equivalent of more than a billion dollars a day to Berkshire Hathaway A shares. The reported phantom volume represents 80% of their daily trading volume.

DriveWealth, which processes stock trades for investing apps like Cash App, also reported fractional share trades in Berkshire to the FINRA database and drove up trade volume, the study found.

“The FINRA reporting rule for fractional trading has created significant distortions,” wrote the authors of the paper.

A FINRA representative told CNN Business that the agency “is already actively working on the issue, and is engaged in ongoing discussions with firms and regulators.”

Fractional trading brokerages like Robinhood, meanwhile, are “a fly in the ointment,” to Buffett, Robert Bartlett, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law and co-author of the study.

“Buffett wants to keep the price of his Class A shares high to attract long-term value investors,” he said. “Those aren’t the people buying these fractional shares, and so they are undermining his main vision for the stock.”

‘Adversaries’ of change vs. ‘casino’ groups

Buffett doesn’t mince words when speaking out against Robinhood. The brokerage is “a very significant part of the casino aspect, the casino group, that has joined into the stock market in the last year or year and a half,” he said at his Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting in 2021, referring to the recent meme-stock craze.

Charlie Munger, Buffett’s right-hand man, joined in at this year’s shareholder meeting, calling the brokerage’s business model “disgusting.”

Robinhood counters that it is “democratizing” Wall Street by creating an easily accessible trading platform that allows investors to engage in fractional trading, buying small percentages of stock shares.

“There is an old guard that doesn’t want average Americans to have a seat at the Wall Street table so they will resort to insults,” the company said in a statement last year.

“Adversaries of this future and of change are usually those who’ve enjoyed plentiful privileges in the past and who don’t want these privileges disrupted,” Robinhood added, saying that the “new generation of investors aren’t a ‘casino group.’”

Either way, Robinhood may have other troubles ahead.

Robinhood announced on Tuesday that it will lay off about 23% of its staff following a sharp decline in trading activity on the platform. This is the second round of layoffs this year and part of a broader reorganization effort led by CEO Vlad Tenev.

  • Parliamentary committee to push for tax waivers for local printers

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Education has promised to make a strong case for the removal of import duties on raw materials for the local printing industry.

It is the conviction of the committee that the removal of the duties will help boost the printing industry to enable it to compete with foreign printers.

The Chairman of the committee, Kwabena Amankwah Asiamah, gave the pledge during a visit by the members of the committee to G-PAK Limited, a subsidiary of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), yesterday to apprise themselves of progress of work on the printing of textbooks for primary schools.

He was responding to an appeal by the Managing Director of the GCGL, who is also the Board Chairman of G-PAK Limited, Ato Afful, to Parliament to consider the removal of import duties on printing materials to boost the activities of local printers, since the duties resulted in increased production cost.

G-PAK Limited is a leading printing and packaging company which has been in the business for the past 49 years.

Mr Asiamah, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Fanteakwa North in the Eastern Region, said taxes on raw materials such as paper and ink increased the production cost of companies engaged in the printing of textbooks and newspaper production and so it was time the situation was critically examined to make the local printing industry competitive.

    First time

He noted that it was the first time the need for taxes to be removed from imported raw materials for the local printing industry had been raised with the committee.

Consequently, he said, the committee would include it in its report and table it before Parliament when the House reconvened for consideration.

    Satisfaction

Mr Asiamah expressed satisfaction with the work done so far by G-PAK and hoped that the company would meet the timelines for the printing of the textbooks.

    Benefits

Welcoming the committee members, Mr Afful said the zero tax rating on finished printed products into the country, compared to duties on imported raw materials, made it difficult for the indigenous printing industry to remain competitive and break even.

He said some time ago, the GCGL took up the issue with the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) but the commissioner indicated that it did not fall within the mandate of the GRA and that it was Parliament that could consider the matter.

While expressing gratitude to the committee for the visit, Mr Afful was of the conviction that the conversation on taxes on imported raw materials would be taken further up for consideration.

He said when that was done, it would boost the local printing industry, generate more jobs and contribute significantly to the general economy.

The Ranking Member on the committee and MP for Akatsi North, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, commended G-PAK for the work done so far and expressed the hope that by the beginning of the next academic year in September this year, primary school pupils would have access to the textbooks to enhance teaching and learning in schools.

The Vice-Chairman of the committee and MP for Kwesimintsim, Dr Prince Hamidu Armah, said the issue of taxation on raw materials raised was legitimate and needed to be looked at, since it made the cost of production expensive, which also had an impact on the prices of textbooks.

    Presentation

Earlier in a presentation, the acting General Manager of G-PAK, Kingsley Mate-Kole, had told the committee that the company had the capacity to take up any printing job.

He said G-PAK was contracted by Afram Publications and Kabkork Publications to print English and Science textbooks for pupils from primary four to six, adding that so far the company had delivered all the 272,300 textbooks it was contracted by Kabkork to print.

With regard to the Afram Publications contract, which involved 808,282 copies of textbooks, he said G-PAK had delivered 245,000 textbooks, with 172,371 ready to be picked up, adding that the company would meet the August 27,2022 deadline for the contract.

    Appointed Time

The committee members also visited the Appointed Time Printing Company, where they expressed satisfaction with the quality of books being printed for primary schools.

Appointed Time is mandated to print science textbooks for primary one to six for two local publishers, Prof. Quarm Publications and NNF Esquire Limited, with 600,000 of the books having already been completed and distributed to schools.

  • Ghana Armed Forces arrests Ammunition Depot intruder

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has advised the public to desist from tampering with the perimeter fence or attempting to gain any unauthorised access to military installations for their own safety.

This follows the arrest of a middle-aged man by the Ghana Armed Forces at Michel Camp.

A statement signed and issued by the Director of Public Relations of GAF, Naval Captain M.A. Larbi, said the suspect, Yaw Boateng was arrested in the process of breaching the perimeter fence of the Ammunition Depot.

Yaw Boateng claims he was trying to access the Ammunition Depot to seek aluminum plated materials for sale.

    Retrieved materials

In the suspect’s possession were 18 pieces of aluminum plates, iron pickets and a broken street light lamp holder.

The suspect has since been handed over to the CID for further action.

According to the statement, the Base Ammunition Depot is a highly sensitive and restricted security zone which is out of bounds to the public.

The Ghana Armed Forces further warned that encroachers and intruders will face dire consequences for their actions if they fail to pay heed to the warning on the need to stay clear off a high security zone such as the Ammunition Depot.

Below is a copy of the statement:

  • We are not fools – Gruzah fumes over Kotoko, Hearts demand for bigger share of sponsorship money

King Faisal owner, Alhaji Grusah has tagged Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak as ‘greedy’ after the two Ghana Premier League(GPL) giants demanded a bigger share of sponsorship deals secured for the GPL.

Kotoko and Hearts have reportedly demanded that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) give them a larger share of the League’s sponsorship deals.

According to Grusah, the 16 remaining clubs are not ‘fools’ to sit back and allow the FA to grant Kotoko and Heats their wish.

“If you are big, you are big in your house. What’s their budget? Do they know my budget? Poor man eats, rich man eats, nobody feeds anyone. If we the rest of the clubs will sit and act like fools for these people…Who are they? Do Kotoko and Hearts finanace King Faisal? Selfish people. I’m going to tell the clubs that no one should agree. We should boycott the league for them to play. Do they know money than us? Come on.”

“FA cannot share the money to satisfy them, and for what reason? Who are they? Do they even know (how) administration(works)? Are they premier division or super premier division? (then) Hearts and Kotoko should play their league for us to also play ours. Do they know money than us?” he added.

The two giants argue that they have the biggest fanbase and therefore deserve a bigger share of deals. But for Grusah, their argument is baseless.

“What numbers? If my team is playing, a Kotoko fan can choose to watch or not. Do they know how I manage my team? Hearts, 1911, is it not just last year that they got themselves training pitch? Me alone, I’m constructing a training pitch for King Faisal. I’m going to find out if they have sent such a letter, they will see. They can’t suggest such nonsense. Do they fund us?” Grusah vehemently disagreed.

The GFA on August 3, 2022, announced betPawa as the new headline sponsor for the Ghana Premier League.

In the deal that was officially announced at the secretariat of the FA, BetPawa will $6 million dollars in three years.

  • The biggest bombshells from unsealed Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard court docs

Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be more to learn about the high-profile defamation trial, more than 6,000 pages of court docs were released over the weekend.

Nude photos, erectile dysfunction, and barely legal groupies can now be added to the list of bizarre topics that have emerged from a celebrity trial that already included mysterious fecal matter and a severed finger.

Yes, just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be more to learn about the Johnny Depp- Amber Heard defamation trial, more than 6,000 pages of court documents were released over the weekend, revealing even more shockingly depraved details about the stars at its center.

The document dump came almost exactly two months after a jury in Fairfax County, Va., ruled that Heard intentionally and maliciously defamed Depp when she wrote a 2018 Washington Post op-ed identifying herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

Although Heard never named Depp in the piece, the jury found that references to him were clear, and awarded the actor $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. (The judge later reduced the punitive damages to Virginia’s statutory cap of $350,000.) Heard earned a small countersuit victory of $2 million in compensatory damages, and her team has filed a motion to appeal the verdict.

The recently unsealed records will likely do little to change public opinion on the verdict, but the documents, which were obtained and posted online for public access by lawyer Andrea Burkhart, offer new insight into the tense behind-the-scenes negotiations ahead of the trial — plus a few new surprises.

Below, check out the most shocking things we learned from the unsealed documents.

Depp allegedly tried to submit nude photos of Heard, claim she was an escort

Heard’s team alleged that Depp had “inappropriately” sought to include nude photos of Heard as evidence in the televised trial. Heard’s team also claimed that Depp tried to introduce other “irrelevant personal matters,” like Heard’s “brief stint as an exotic dancer years before she met Mr. Depp.” According to Heard’s lawyers, Depp’s team was “attempting to frivolously and maliciously suggest or imply that Ms. Heard was at one time an escort.”

“Nude pictures of Amber Heard or comments about stripping or escort services would be highly distracting and unfairly prejudicial to the extent they portray Amber Heard as a sex symbol instead of a women’s rights activist against domestic abuse,” Heard’s lawyer, Elaine Bredehoft, argued in the documents.

Heard tried to submit evidence that Depp has erectile dysfunction

Depp’s team called Heard’s alleged attempts to submit into record parts of his medical history, namely prescriptions for drugs commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction and herpes, a clear attempt to “take this trial down a number of unnecessarily salacious rabbit holes.”

But Heard’s team argued that Depp’s alleged erectile dysfunction was relevant to one of the actress’ most disturbing allegations: that Depp raped her with a liquor bottle during a fight. “Though Mr. Depp would rather not disclose his erectile dysfunction condition, such a condition absolutely is relevant to sexual violence, including Mr.

Depp’s anger and use of a bottle to rape Amber Heard,” her lawyers argued. “Mr. Depp’s erectile dysfunction makes it more probable that Mr. Depp would be angry or agitated in encounters with Amber Heard, and that he would resort to a bottle.” (Depp has strenuously denied the alleged incident, and has maintained he’s never physically attacked Heard.)

More disturbing texts with Marilyn Manson

While Depp’s close friendship with embattled shock rocker Marilyn Manson came up often during the trial, the unsealed documents show that Depp’s team tried hard to keep text messages between them private, arguing it was an unfair attempt to paint Depp as guilty by association.

But a now-unsealed motion filed March 28 revealed more disturbing texts between Depp and Manson, who, taking a page out of his friend’s book, is currently suing his ex-girlfriend, actress Evan Rachel Wood, for defamation after she and others accused him of grooming and sexual abuse.

According to copies of the texts in the unsealed court documents, Manson messaged Depp in 2016 about a woman named Lindsay (Manson is currently married to photographer Lindsay Usich), saying he has an “amber 2.0” situation: “Lindsay just [pulled] an amber on me…please delete,” he wrote.

Depp texted back, “I been reading A LOT of material on that and sociopathic behavior…it is f—ing real my brother!! My ex-c— is goddamn TEXTBOOK!!!”

Manson replied, “I got a serious police amber type scenarios with L’s family. I’m f—ing stressing. I don’t know if you are back but I need asylum somewhere because I think the cops might be headed my way.”

In another unsealed text exchange, Manson messaged Depp: “My new fan meet and greet girl Looks like you need it. Trust me. I’ll send a pic. 18.”

Testimony Depp fought to keep out of court

The unsealed documents show that, while not always successful, Depp’s lawyers fought hard to keep many of Heard’s experts off the witness stand. Although Elaine Barkin did ultimately testify, Depp’s team urged the court to block testimony from the actress, who claimed Depp threw a bottle in her direction during a fight while they were dating in the ’90s.

They also tried to keep inflammatory texts between Depp and his actor friend Paul Bettany private, arguing that the two were merely exhibiting a dark sense of humor when they spoke of drowning Heard to determine whether she’s a witch, with Depp suggesting they burn and mutilate her corpse as well.

Depp’s team also unsuccessfully sought to bar testimony from Dr. David Spiegel, a psychiatrist for the defense; Dr. Dawn M. Hughes, another psychologist who met with Heard for several sessions and determined she experienced PTSD; and Dr. Amy Banks, a relationship consultant who met with the couple and believed Heard suffered domestic violence at Depp’s hands.

The court documents further show that Depp’s team wished to exclude forensic expert Julian Ackert, who later suggested in court that audio and photo files submitted as evidence by Depp “raised concerns of manipulation, alteration, and deletion.”

  • Equifax issued wrong credit scores for millions

Credit giant Equifax sent lenders incorrect credit scores for millions of consumers this spring, in a technology snafu with major real-world impact.

In certain cases the errors were significant enough — the differential was at least 25 points for around 300,000 consumers — that some would-be borrowers may have been wrongfully denied credit, the company said in a statement.

Shares (EFX) fell about 2% Tuesday on the report and were down nearly 5% and shortly after the open Wednesday.

The problem occurred because of a “coding issue” when making a change to one of Equifax’s servers, according to the company, which said the issue “was in place over a period of a few weeks [and] resulted in the potential miscalculation” of credit scores.

While Equifax did not specify dates or figures, a June 1 alert from housing agency Freddie Mac to its clients said Equifax told the agency that about 12% of all credit scores released from March 17 to April 6 may be have been incorrect.

Equifax wrote that “there was no shift in the vast majority of scores” and that “credit reports were not affected.” But the company declined to comment to CNN Business about how people can learn whether they were among those whose credit scores were incorrectly reported — and what recourse they may have if they were issued loans at a higher rate or denied a loan outright because of the snafu.

Equifax issued its statement later Tuesday, hours after the Wall Street Journal published a report about the errors. Trade publication National Mortgage Professional had reported in May that Equifax was warning lenders about the possibility of incorrect scores, and the company released a statement to the magazine at the time acknowledging the technology-based error.

Tuesday’s disclosure about the score errors comes just after Equifax said its board voted to give CEO Mark Begor a $25 million retention bonus package.

Last Friday’s regulatory filing announcing the bonus said the board believes Boger is “uniquely qualified to continue to lead the Company during the final stages of our $1.5 billion technology transformation.”

Equifax tracks the credit history of millions of borrowers — almost all Americans — and sells that information to banks and other lenders. As one of only three major credit reporting companies, Equifax plays an outsized role in the credit-score business: Its information helps lenders set interests for borrowers or deny borrowers seeking mortgages, car loans or credit cards.

This isn’t the first data issue for Equifax. In 2017, the company revealed that the personal information of nearly 150 million people was compromised. The company eventually reached a deal to pay up to $700 million to state and federal regulators to settle probes related to the incident, the largest settlement ever paid for a data breach.

  • Resolve issues surrounding LPG supply to end tanker drivers strike COPEC-GH appeals to Gov’t

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC-GH) wants government to as a matter of urgency address pending Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) issues with industry players to restore the supply of the product in the country.

According to COPEC, the strike by GNTDA which energized the others to join, followed unsuccessful attempts by the group to get their issues resolved both by the Ministry of Energy and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

Touching on the genesis of the problems, it said after the Atomic gas explosion about five years ago, the NPA under its former Chief Executive, HasanTampuli, directed the freezing of the permits of a number of stations under construction.

“Several years down the line and this ban is yet to be lifted thereby leaving the various companies who had invested heavily in the construction of these retail points heavily debt distressed as they are constantly harassed by their banks and other finance entities who had advanced various loans to put up these stations,” it said.

According to COPEC, the ban had led to about 11 per cent reduction in volumes for the operators over the past one year instead of a projected 15 per cent increase year on year.

The statement said efforts by actors within the LPG space to get the issues resolved had all proven futile because authorities do not seem to understand the pressures the operators were going through.

“We call on the NPA under the leadership of Dr Mustapha Hamid to ensure a speedy resolution of the deadlock between the operators and authorities to ensure the immediate reopening of these outlets across the country.

“We further call on the Energy Ministry to ensure all grievances of the various operators within the LPG space are attended to forthwith without fail as the looming pressures on the Ghanaian LPG user could only exacerbate with further delays in addressing these challenges,” it said.

  • Another rape case allegedly rocks KNUST, 6 students arrested

Six students of the Kwame Nkrumah University Science and Technology (KNUST) have reportedly gang-raped a first-year student at the university.

According to a U TV news report, the victim was the girlfriend of one of the accused persons, who had previously invited her to have group sex with some friends, which she objected to.

The report said that the boyfriend, who was named Patrick Ofosu, a 19-year-old business administration student, then deceived the victim, telling her that the sexual encounter would be between only the two of them.

It added that the Ofosu, after having sex with the victim, allowed his friends, who were five in number, to come in one after the other to have their way with the victim.

The six suspects were arrested by the Ghana Police Service and have been arraigned before court.

The police have so far not commented on the incident.

  • Tinder: CEO Renate Nyborg to leave dating app after one year

Her exit was one of a number of management changes at Tinder announced by parent company Match Group.

Tinder’s plans to adopt new technology, including virtual currencies and metaverse-based dating, are also being reviewed in the strategic shake-up.

The announcements came as Match reported second-quarter results that missed Wall Street expectations.

“Today we’re announcing the departure of Tinder CEO Renate Nyborg, and I have made some changes to the management team and structure that I am confident will help deliver Tinder’s full potential,” Match Group chief executive Bernard Kim said in a letter to shareholders.

Mr Kim will take up the role vacated by Ms Nyborg while the company looks for a permanent chief executive for Tinder.

“I have loved every moment of the last two years, working with an I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E team on the magic of human connection,” Ms Nyborg said in a LinkedIn post.

The announcement also included the reorganisation of Tinder’s top management team as well as a review of plans for rolling out new technology.

“After seeing mixed results from testing Tinder Coins, we’ve decided to take a step back and re-examine that initiative… we also intend to do more thinking about virtual goods,” Mr Kim added.

It came as Match – which also owns the dating apps OkCupid, Hinge and Plenty of Fish – said it expects sales in the three months to the end of September to be between $790m to $800m.

That was well below Wall Street expectations and would mean the company would see no sales growth for the period.

Mr Kim pointed to the impact of the pandemic on people’s willingness to start using dating apps and currency fluctuations for the disappointing figures.

“While people have generally moved past lockdowns and entered a more normal way of life, their willingness to try online dating products for the first time hasn’t yet returned to pre-pandemic levels,” he said.

Match Group shares fell by more than 20% in after-hours trade in New York on Tuesday.

Ms Nyborg became Tinder’s first female chief executive in September last year.

Mr Kim was appointed as Match’s chief executive in May after his predecessor Shar Dubey stepped down after just over two years in the role.

  • BetPawa to be named headline sponsors of the Ghana Premier League

The Ghana Football Association(GFA) will later in the day announce betting firm BetPawa as the new headline sponsors for the Ghana Premier League for the next two years.

BetPawa will from the coming season 2022/2023 become the headline sponsors of the league that has been without sponsors for many years.

They will reportedly pay the $1million for each year for the next two football seasons to the GFA and will also undertake a legacy project for the league.

The Ghana Premier League(GPL) and other domestic leagues have been bereft of sponsors since the Kurt Okraku-led administration took over the reins of Ghana football.

There have been few ones like media sponsors StarTimes but the league has been without a headline sponsor for some time now.

There are other deals with NASCO and Melocm for the Ghana Premier League but sponsors have come at a premium for the elite division.

A lot has been attributed to the failure of powers that be to attract sponsors for its most glamourous product aside from the hallowed Black Stars.

In the past, the likes Zylofon Cash, Glo, Kinapharma, ABC, First Capital Plus among several others have all sponsored the domestic Ghana league.

In the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season, title winners Asante Kotoko received Ghc 250,000 ($31,124) with Medeama and Bechem United pocketing Ghc150,000 ($18,624) and Ghc 80,000 respectively as prize monies for their positions on the table.

Established in 2014, Betpawa is an online gambling company that is operating in many African countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Rwanda and Zimbabwe. It has its headquarters in Tallinn, Harjumaa. The betting company provides sports betting, virtual sports, and lottery services. Its services are tailored to suit the passion of each of the countries it is operating.

Meanwhile, the 2022/23 football season will kick off in September as announced by the Ghana FA.

  • The buyback bogeyman is back. How worried should we be?

Americans may be wondering why they’re forced to spend more than $4 per gallon at the pump while energy companies are raking in record profits.

Even more aggravating: Exxon and Chevron announced last week they’d spend billions of dollars of their earnings buying back their own stock, fattening investors’ portfolios.

Oil companies are hardly alone, but they’ve helped thrust buybacks back into the spotlight. The debate about stock buybacks has been raging on and off for four decades, and Democrats are trying to rein them in.

But a recent paper from a bipartisan think tank suggests buybacks may not be quite as harmful to everyday people without money in the market as critics suggest.

    What’s a buyback?

Buybacks, which raise the value of a company’s stock and immediately reward shareholders and executives, have been a hot button political issue since they were legalized in 1982. That’s when the Securities and Exchange Commission passed a rule allowing companies to purchase their own shares without being charged with stock manipulation.

They’re also incredibly common. Last year, companies in the S&P 500 repurchased a record $882 billion of their own shares. Executives sell more stock in the eight days following a buyback announcement from their companies than at any other time, according to SEC data.

These buybacks have soared in recent years as US corporations recorded huge gains and excess profits in the largest expansionary period since WWII. Democrats in Washington also refocused their scrutiny of the practice after former President Donald Trump lowered corporate tax rates to 21% from 35%. The change led to a rapid growth in buybacks. In 2019, the largest American companies spent $728 billion purchasing their own stock, up 55% from 2018, according to the Senate Finance Committee.

    What critics say

Critics and legislators argue that buybacks allow ultra-wealthy executives to manipulate markets while funneling corporate profits into their own pockets instead of the economy. Corporate stock is owned largely by wealthy Americans: the top 10% of US households by wealth own about 90% of corporate equity. Money would be better spent on companies’ long-term growth and on employees, they say.

Senate Democrats like Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Ron Wyden of Oregon proposed instituting a 2% tax on buybacks at the time.

Now, as the country teeters on the precipice of recession and faces historically high rates of inflation, the practice is back in the spotlight.

Policymakers, worried that companies are using their money to aid shareholders instead of consumers and workers, are proposing increased oversight of the practice.

The White House proposed new rules intended to curb stock buybacks as part of its $5.8 trillion 2023 budget plan. The plan would require company executives to hold on to shares of corporate stock for a certain number of years and prohibit them from selling shares for a certain amount of time after a planned buyback. The White House did not specify the exact number of years.

Discouraging stock buybacks “would align executives’ interests with the long-term interests of shareholders, workers and the economy,” said the proposal, which echoes a long argued Democratic position that buybacks manipulate stock prices and divert money from companies’ growth and innovation.

The SEC has also proposed requiring disclosures of detailed information around buybacks including the objective or rationale for the share repurchases and the process or criteria used to determine the repurchase amounts.

    The big picture

Corporations counter that they use repurchases as a way to efficiently distribute excess capital.

They might have a point: Last week the Bipartisan Policy Center released a white paper that challenged the need for the SEC rule and concluded that “share repurchases provide significant economic benefits to society.”

Its argument largely hinges on a trickle-down effect from shareholders to the rest of society. “Repurchases provide investors, including those beneficiaries with 401ks and pensions that are invested market wide, with additional financial resources that they otherwise would not have had,” they write. “These additional resources may in turn be reinvested or saved, which can provide needed capital for small companies and others to facilitate innovation and growth.”

Claims that buybacks detract from other forms of investment are also flawed, says Jesse Fried, a professor at Harvard Law School.

Between 2007 to 2016, Fried found that S&P 500 firms distributed $7 trillion via buybacks and dividends, or over 96% of their aggregate net income, promoting claims of “short-termism.” But during that decade, he found, investment in their businesses substantially increased even while cash balances ballooned.

“In short, S&P 500 shareholder-payout figures cannot provide much basis for the notion that short-termism has been depriving public firms of needed capital,” he wrote.

    Buybacks are waning

At the beginning of the year, Goldman Sachs estimated that 2022 would see a record-breaking $1 trillion in buybacks. That’s unlikely to happen. To date, 58% of companies have reported their second quarter buybacks, and they’ve fallen by 12.9% since the first quarter (though they’re still up by about 7% since last year), according to data from Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices.

JPMorgan halted its buyback program in July, signaling a more cautious outlook as the economy flirts with recession. The suspension also came after the largest US bank failed the Federal Reserve’s stress test, sending it scrambling to generate more capital.

Bank of America and Citigroup also fared poorly in the test, which assesses a bank’s ability to lend during a severe global recession with unemployment hitting 10% and a large drop in asset prices.

Large banks accounted for 19.5%, or $54.7 billion, of all buybacks in the first quarter of 2022. Buybacks among the financial sector are currently running 56.4% lower than they were last quarter and 50% lower than they did last year.

  • T-Mobile agrees to pay customers $350 million in settlement over massive data breach

T-Mobile has agreed to pay $350 million to settle multiple class-action suits stemming from a data breach disclosed last year affecting tens of millions of people.

In the proposed settlement announced Friday, T-Mobile also agreed to spend an extra $150 million on cybersecurity through the end of 2023. Court documents outlining the proposed agreement were filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Missouri.

More than 76 million US residents affected by the breach will be part of the proposed class, according to a court filing accompanying the settlement agreement. During its initial disclosures surrounding the breach, T-Mobile had said it believed a hacker had stolen information on about 53 million current, former or prospective customers. The company began investigating the breach in August 2021 after Vice reported claims made on an underground online forum offering T-Mobile customer data for sale.

If approved, T-Mobile’s $350 million will go into a fund covering payments to class members, as well as legal and administrative fees.

“Customers are first in everything we do and protecting their information is a top priority,” T-Mobile said in a statement on its website Friday. “Like every company, we are not immune to these criminal attacks. Our efforts to guard against them continue and over the past year we have doubled down on our extensive cybersecurity program.”

The company added it has created a “cybersecurity transformation office” reporting to CEO Mike Sievert and hired cybersecurity firm Mandiant as well as consulting firms Accenture and KPMG “to design strategies and execute plans” to improve its cybersecurity posture.

T-Mobile expects the settlement to be approved in December at the earliest, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, though it cautioned that appeals or other proceedings could result in delays.

  • Bawumia commissions Zongo Development Fund projects in Ashanti Region

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia led the commissioning of a number of projects undertaken by government under the Zongo Development Fund (ZDF) in the Ashanti Region.

The projects commissioned included furnished classroom blocks, a water system and a Community Sports and Social Centre as part of his two-day visit to the Region.

The events were held separately at Asokore (Asokore Quranic Islamic School), Effiduase (Hamdaniya Islamic School), both in the Sekyere East District and at Bantama in the Kumasi Metropolis, Vice President Bawumia.

“Zongo communities are indispensable stakeholders in our determination to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive development in Ghana,” Dr Bawumia declared at the commissioning on Tuesday, August 2, 2022.

“The historic deprivation and lack of development in Zongo Communities are issues that the government of the New Patriotic Party under the visionary leadership of His Excellency President Akufo-Addo is determined to address in a sustainable, comprehensive and equitable manner.

“Expanding access to quality and relevant education is pivotal to the transformation we are determined to engender in Zongo Communities. The Zongo Development Fund is the frontline agency and vehicle through which government seeks to ensure the realization of the development objectives relating to Zongo communities.

“Indeed, since Ghana attained independence no budget has ever been deliberately allocated for the development of Zongo communities. The establishment of the Fund dedicated to Zongo communities is, therefore, indisputably unprecedented.”

A substantial portion of the over 300 projects undertaken by the ZDF across the country can be found in the region, the Vice President said.

“Not only has government implemented a comprehensive development of educational infrastructure in Zongo communities, it has also intervened positively by improving health facilities, sanitation, human resource development through skills training and educational grants and in improving the ambience, visibility and security in Zongo communities in the Ashanti region,” he emphasized.

Speaking at Bantama, where he commissioned a Community Sports and Social Centre, Vice President Bawumia explained that the Zongo Development Fund Act 964 (2017) empowers the Zongo Development Fund to provide basic services and strategic infrastructure in the areas of health, education and sanitation; promote entrepreneurship and skills development; provide social protection for the poor and vulnerable; enhance economic development, peace and security and promote tourism, arts, culture and tradition.

“Government remains resolute in its resolve at bridging the gap between Zongos and other communities in Ghana. The past four years have witnessed remarkable progress under the Zongo Development Fund, in the provision of potable drinking water, community roads, ultra-modern basic school infrastructure, ICT Labs, Community Sports centres (popularly referred to as Astro Turfs) and several other interventions” he emphasized.

While generally referred to as playing grounds, the Astro turfs also serve as community engagement avenues for numerous programmes and activities in addition to providing excellent opportunities for nurturing talented youth of both genders into becoming successful sportsmen and women.

Other Zongo communities that have benefitted from the construction of Astro Turfs are Madina, New Fadama, Kyebi, Tafo, Walewale, Salaga, Akyem Oda, Kwabeng, Agogo and Dodowa. The rest are: Manhyia (work has just begun), Larabanga, Esikado, Chiraa, Sowutuom, Yeji, Bolga and Dunkwa- on-Ofin.

The MPs for Effiduase Asokore, Hon Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie and Hon Francis Asenso Boakye, expressed gratitude to the Fund for helping to meet the development aspirations of their constituents.

  • Nichelle Nichols, groundbreaking ‘Star Trek’ actress, dies at 89

Nichols became a household name when Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry cast her as Lt. Nyota Uhura in the ’60s sci-fi series.

    Star Trek (1966 TV series)

“I regret to inform you that a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years,” Johnson wrote. “Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration.”

The actress enjoyed decades in the spotlight thanks to her screen work, her music career, and her activism to help more women succeed in the field of astronomy.

Born Grace Dell Nichols in Robbins, Illinois, Nichols studied dance at the Chicago Ballet Academy as a teenager before she was discovered by jazz legend Duke Ellington. Nichols joined Ellington’s tour as a ballet dancer, but ended up as the lead singer. She toured all over North America and Europe with Ellington, as well as, Lionel Hampton’s band.

In 1959, Nichols made her big-screen debut after landing a role as a dancer in Sammy Davis Jr.’s Porgy and Bess. She went on to act in other films and TV series, including making a guest appearance in Gene Roddenberry’s show, The Lieutenant, in 1964.

However, Nichols’ breakout role came when Roddenberry cast the actress as Lt. Nyota Uhura on the original Star Trek series.

When the show first aired in 1966, Nichols was one of the first Black women to play a major role on primetime television. She is popularly cited as having the first interracial kiss on American television, when her character famously locked lips with white leading man William Shatner’s Captain James T. Kirk. Martin Luther King Jr. once called Nichols’ role “the first non-stereotypical role portrayed by a black woman in television history.”

Following the end of the science-fiction series, Nichols helped NASA recruit astronauts who were women or minorities. Among those who were recruited as a result of the program was Sally Ride, the first female American astronaut.

During her acting career, Nichols starred in six Star Trek movies from 197991. Some of her most recent work included the 2002 Disney picture Snow Dogs, in which she played Cuba Gooding Jr.’s mother. In 2005, she acted alongside Ice Cube as Miss Mable in the comedy Are We There Yet? And in 2007, she had a recurring role on the NBC series Heroes as Nana Dawson. Nichols appeared in the long-running daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless as recently as 2016.

In 1992, Nichols was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And when the original Star Trek cast was honored in front of Hollywood’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in 1991, she became the first African-American to place her handprints and signature at the iconic spot.

Nichols was nominated twice for the Sarah Siddons Award for Best Actress for her performances in The Blacks and Kicks and Company. In addition to acting, Nichols also recorded two albums, Down to Earth and Out of This World. Nichols has one son, actor Kyle Johnson, from her first marriage to Foster Johnson. She later remarried songwriter Duke Mondy. The pair divorced in 1972.

“Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all,” Johnson wrote of his mother. “Live Long and Prosper.”

  • ‘The First Lady’ canceled after 1 season at Showtime

Showtime is not moving ahead with a second season of the anthology series, EW has confirmed. The drama chronicled the lives of the infamous former first ladies Michelle Obama (played by Viola Davis), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson). Created by Aaron Cooley, the series also featured Kiefer Sutherland, O-T Fagbenle, Aaron Eckhart, Dakota Fanning, and more.

“Showtime can confirm that the anthology series The First Lady will not be moving forward with another season,” a spokesperson for the network said in a statement to EW. “We would like to applaud the artistry and commitment of our showrunner Cathy Schulman, director Susanne Bier, their fellow executive producers, our amazing cast, led by executive producer Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson, and our studio partner Lionsgate for their dedicated work in telling the unique stories of three remarkable leaders.”

Schulman and Bier had previously said during a TCA panel that they were exploring ideas for future seasons that could center on Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Hillary Clinton, Melania Trump, Dolly Madison, Edith Wilson, Martha Washington, or Rosalynn Carter. At the time, Anderson said, “I think the hope is that there’s going to be future seasons so they’ll have the opportunity to have more First Ladies represented. So maybe not just four but maybe 104.”

News of the series’ cancelation comes after tepid reviews from critics, with EW’s own Kristen Baldwin calling the show “a woeful waste of three wonderful actresses.” The First Lady wrapped up its 10-episode run in June.

  • Mystikal arrested on new rape and robbery charges

The rapper, whose real name is Michael Tyler, is currently in jail in the Baton Rouge suburb where he lives, the sheriff’s office confirmed.

Mystikal, the New Orleans-based rapper best known for hit songs like “Shake Ya Ass,” has been arrested on rape and robbery charges, EW has confirmed.

According to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies spoke with a sexual assault victim at a hospital in the Baton Rouge suburb on Saturday night. Following their interview, deputies identified Mystikal, whose legal name is Michael Tyler, as a suspect and arrested him on counts of first-degree rape, simple robbery, domestic abuse battery (strangulation), and other counts. He remains in a jail in Ascension Parish at the time of reporting.

Mystikal performs onstage during Drive-In Concerts Jokes & Jams II at Georgia International Convention Center on September 05, 2020 in College Park, Georgia. Mystikal released his self-titled debut album in 1994 on Big Boy Records. He found mainstream success with the Neptunes-produced “Shake Ya Ass,” a highlight of his 2000 album Let’s Get Ready. His 2001 follow-up, Tarantula, earned multiple Grammy nominations. But after that, the rapper’s life and career took a turn.

In 2004, Tyler was sentenced to six years in prison for sexually assaulting his hairdresser. He served all six years of his sentence, but his 2010 release wasn’t the end of his legal troubles. A domestic abuse incident in 2012 violated his five-year probation and landed him back in jail for three months. A few years after scoring a comeback hit with 2015’s “Feel Right,” Tyler was indicted in 2018 for charges of rape and kidnapping connected to a 2016 incident. Charges were dropped in December 2020 but not before Tyler, who maintained his innocence throughout, spent 18 months in jail.

In an interview with the Associated Press last year, Tyler said he regretted the sexually-charged nature of his earlier music. “When I look back and listen to the music, man — I was a nasty lil’ rapper!” he said. He added that he was trying to avoid more problematic sexual encounters and “stay out the water because it’s sharks in that water … in other words, don’t put yourself in situations where things like this can happen. I’m too old for that.”

Plot details are unknown, though the original Mike Nichols-directed hit starred Griffith as Tess, a young woman who takes on the identity of her manipulative boss, Katharine (Sigourney Weaver), as she recovers from an accident away from the office. She eventually becomes professionally and romantically entangled with other business powerhouses at her New York City company, namely Katharine’s love interest, Jack Trainer (Harrison Ford).

Working Girl was a pop cultural phenomenon at the time of its release, grossing over $100 million at the box office before earning six Oscar nominations — including one for Best Picture. It eventual won Best Original Song for Carly Simon’s “Let the River Run.”

Following the film’s success, Sandra Bullock led a short-lived TV show based on the film. Cyndi Lauper, meanwhile, began work on a stage musical adaptation.

  • Implement system to reduce corruption – Theo Chirivu tells government

Regional lead for Africa and the Middle East Government Partnership, Theo Chirivu, has asked the government to incorporate anti-corruption policy to clamp down corruption in Ghana.

According to him, implementing an anti-corruption policy will create an environment in which the canker will be less likely to
    proliferate.

Suggesting some of the effective and efficient initiatives suitable to fight corruption in the country, Mr Chirivu noted that instituting an open government regime will nib the menace in the bud.

The concept of open government is promoting citizen-centered governance by increasing civic participation, improving transparency and strengthening accountability.

Civil society working hand in hand with the government , in his view, increases levels of trust and social capital, improves policymaking, and increases oversight of the use of public resources.

He emphasized that “open government partnership is important because it is a way of deterring corruption but it is also important in the sense that it enables citizens to know who is doing business with the government, who is getting contracts for the government especially with political influence that are getting contracts with the government.”

Theo Chirivu also encouraged the government to take prudent measures to improve financial transparency.

In that regard, he stated that revenue leakages in the country can be prevented by ensuring that both private and public institutions disclose data on beneficial owners.

He stated that transparency about beneficial ownership is aimed at preventing owners of companies from operating in secrecy.

This, he says, will prevent many illegalities, such as tax evasion.

“Beneficiary transparency is very important because this is how you are able to find out who is actually doing business with the government, how they are getting contracts and make sure that it limits and reduces the amount of corruption, fraud and illicit financial flaws.”

Corruption in Ghana is touted to have increased over the years.

According to an afrobarometer report undertaken by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Ghana ranked 73rd on the Corruption Perceptions Index in 2021.

The perceptions of corruption among public officials and public institutions increased in 2022 compared to 2019.

Among key public officials, the police, MPs, judges, magistrates, and tax officials are most widely perceived as corrupt.

The police institution scored 65 per cent, which placed it at the top of the table, while the Presidency followed in second position with 55 per cent.

The most trusted institutions, on the other hand, are the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), religious leaders, and traditional rulers.

  • Private astronaut missions to the ISS will soon require an experienced astronaut chaperone

Private astronaut missions to the International Space Station will have to be chaperoned by a former NASA astronaut, per new proposed requirements from the US space agency.

NASA posted a public notice online on Tuesday that laid out a handful of updated requirements for future private astronaut missions, which the agency said are based on lessons learned upon completion of the first private astronaut mission to the ISS that took place last April. The first all-private mission to the orbiting laboratory was a multi-million dollar journey organized by Texas-based startup Axiom Space and launched via a SpaceX rocket, with a crew comprised of a former NASA astronaut and current Axiom Space employee, Michael López-Alegría, and three ultra-wealthy paying crewmembers.

During the mission, dubbed AX-1, the four-member crew spent nearly two weeks off of Earth’s surface, at least in part conducting experiments and other scientific work. Other space tourism companies like Blue Origin or Virgin Galactic only offer customers short trips that allow for a few minutes of microgravity.

    Why everyone's wearing NASA-branded clothes

Among the most notable new policies for these pricey, private missions to the ISS is that “upcoming private astronaut missions include a former flown NASA (U.S.) government astronaut as the mission commander,” according to the NASA update.

The requirement is still being finalized, NASA added, but the agency noted that having a former, legitimate astronaut “provides experienced guidance for the private astronauts during pre-flight preparation through mission execution.” The former NASA astronaut also “provides a link” between residents on the ISS and the private astronauts, which the agency said “reduces risk” to ISS operations and safety.

Late last year, SpaceX launched the Inspiration4 mission, which was bankrolled by billionaire Jared Isaacman and had a four-person crew composed entirely of people without any prior spaceflight experience. This private mission, however, simply took a three-day spin around Earth in a SpaceX dragon capsule and did not dock at the ISS.

Axiom has already stated that its second private astronaut mission to the ISS, dubbed AX-2 and expected to launch next year, will have former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson as a mission commander.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from launch complex 39A carrying the Crew Dragon spacecraft on a commercial mission managed by Axion Space at Kennedy Space Center April 8, 2022 in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

During remarks at the annual International Space Station Research and Development Conference last week, López-Alegría spoke about how he became mission commander for the AX-1 flight, saying he initially didn’t expect to return to space after retiring from NASA.

When Axiom was looking for customers, however, “It became pretty clear, first of all, that customers really didn’t want to fly with nobody who’d done it before,” he said. It also became apparent, he said, “NASA was a lot more comfortable having someone who’d been there before.”

“We were having a meeting and we looked around the room and I was the only guy who’d been to space, so I raised my hand. I volunteered,” López-Alegría quipped at the conference.

NASA is also adding additional requirements that appear to be a result of new information learned from the AX-1 mission. Future private missions to the space station will include more time for “microgravity adaptation,” as the floating environment of the ISS can often induce space sickness, which is akin to motion sickness.

The federal space agency will also be introducing clarifications to the ISS code of conduct for commercial visitors, requirements for more detailed plans regarding crew interactions with the media, as well as a requirement for additional time to evaluate research proposals before they are brought on board.

Larry Connor, an AX-1 crewmember, told CNN in April that he and his crewmates were pressed for research time on the ISS.

“If it were not for the NASA’s Crew-3 astronauts, and their phenomenal help, we would never – underscore the word never – have been able to accomplish all of our objectives,” Connor said at the time. “We underestimated the time on some of the projects. We had one project early on that we thought was two-and-a-half hours take five hours.”

Private astronaut just back from space station describes interactions with Russian cosmonauts

A NASA rep did not immediately respond to CNN Business’ request for further comment on the new requirements. They come, however, as the private spaceflight industry has officially lifted off after decades of people largely having to rely on government agencies and the extraordinarily selective astronaut hiring process if they wanted to go to space. Now, those who seek to leave Earth’s surface simply must have the means to pay for it.

While Axiom did not publicly disclose how much its first cohort of private astronauts shelled out for the AX-1 mission, the Washington Post reported that each crew member dished out $55 million for the flight.

  • Uber’s business is booming even with high gas prices and inflation

Even higher gas prices and soaring inflation aren’t slowing down Uber’s rebound from the worst days of the pandemic.

Uber (UBER) on Tuesday said its revenue hit $8.1 billion during the three months ending in June, more than doubling from the year prior as more customers turn to the ride-hailing service.

The number of consumers and drivers using its platform are “at all-time highs,” the company said in its quarterly earnings report. Uber recorded 122 million people using its platform each month, up 21% from the prior year.

Why some people actually want a recession (and others say that's crazy)

Perhaps more stunning for a company with a history of substantial losses is that Uber said it had become cash flow positive, meaning it took in more money from its operations than it spent, excluding capital expenditures, which typically includes property and other physical assets. The company said it generated $382 million in free cash flow during the quarter.

But Uber continued to be unprofitable in large part due to its investments. Uber recorded a net loss of $2.6 billion, much of which ($1.7 billion) was related to its investments in other, international ridehail businesses like Didi and Grab. (Didi, in particular, has been hit by a tremendous amount of regulatory pressure in China.)

Uber’s business offers a unique window into consumer trends more than two years into the pandemic which initially decimated demand for travel (hurting Uber’s Rides business) and accelerated adoption of online food delivery (helping its Eats business). During the previous quarter ending in March, the company reported that its Rides bookings had exceeded pre-pandemic levels and delivery bookings were up 12% year-over-year.

Uber has continued to push its delivery offerings. Late last month, Uber announced a new grocery ordering service. While ordering groceries through Uber Eats has been available on the platform for two years, the update includes new options to incentivize use, such as advanced scheduling of deliveries, live order tracking and product replacements recommendations.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement accompanying the results Tuesday that the company “delivered balanced growth” and did so “on a platform that’s larger than ever, with the number of consumers and earners using Uber now both at all-time highs.”

“No one wishes for a tough economic environment or elevated inflation that’s affecting so many of us, including Uber drivers,” Khosrowshahi added on a conference all with analysts Tuesday. But he said the economic environment has allowed Uber to show its strengths.

Shares of Uber jumped more than 15% in early trading Tuesday following the results.

Uber’s results come as much of the tech industry is turning to hiring freezes and layoffs in an effort to weather a financial downturn marked by soaring inflation, rising interest rates, fears of a looming recession as well as the fallout from war in Ukraine.

Khosrowshahi told staff in May that the company would cut costs and rethink its approach to hiring amid a “seismic shift” in the market. On the call Tuesday, Khosrowshahi stressed that the company can be, and has been, diligent about its expenses and still continue to grow. He also noted that Uber benefits not only from its size but also from its range of business offerings.

“When we look at the competitive environment, this is the strongest we felt competitively globally since Nelson and I probably started here,” Khosrowshahi said, referring to himself and the company’s CFO, Nelson Chai. Khosrowshahi has been at the helm of Uber since 2017.

In a striking departure from the growth-at-all-costs model Uber popularized years ago, Khosrowshahi also noted: “You can’t spend your way to glory in any business.”

Khosrowshahi said Uber has been able to “apply discipline” as it makes improvements to the platform to serve drivers better. That includes better onboarding to make it easier for workers to sign up and an easier way to toggle between driving and delivering. “Right now, the machine is working,” he said.

Last week, Uber announced it would expand its Upfront Fares feature to more cities in the United States to give drivers more information about earnings and the customer’s destination before accepting a ride. Khosrowshahi said on the call that this feature is one of the top requests from drivers, while noting that “there’s a lot of algorithmic work that has to go into pricing that trip properly.”
