  • We’ll not let coronavirus pandemic undermine our future – President

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Sunday, announced that finalists of educational institutions will return to school as scheduled to prepare for their exit examinations, saying the COVID-19 pandemic should not be allowed to undermine the survival and future of the nation.

“Education, indeed, is the key to the future of our country. The quality of education that our educational institutions produce, ultimately, will determine the success or otherwise of our nation.

“We, therefore, have to find a way of guaranteeing the prospects of the generation of young people who are the objects of education today, and who represents our future,” the President emphasised.

Consequently, finalists of tertiary institutions will resume on Monday, June 15, followed by those in Senior High School, with the second-year students under the Gold Track, on June 22, while Basic School finalists will go on June 29.

The President was updating citizens on measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, in his 11th national broadcast on Sunday.

Responding to criticisms that the reopening of schools would endanger the lives of teachers and students as had happened elsewhere, the President stated that the Government would not let the COVID-19 pandemic undermine the country’s survival, progress and future generation.

The President explained that there was no ‘one-size-fits-all approach’ to the resolution of the pandemic, therefore, Ghana had to chart its unique course, while learning from best practices.

However, he emphasised that saving the lives, jobs and livelihoods of citizens had been at the centre of the Government’s interventions.

“We can’t say that because of the pandemic, we are no longer interested in issues of social justice, such as education and health,” the President explained.

The Government would, therefore, do everything possible to protect and preserve the potential of the future generation.

He, thus, entreated teachers and non-teaching staff as well as the finalists, who would be in school for six weeks, to be more disciplined, than ever before, and observe the social distancing directives, wear face masks and comply with other safety and hygiene protocols, to curb the spread of the respiratory disease.

Government started airlifting quantities of Personal Protective Equipment, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, Veronica Buckets, packets of soap and tissue rolls to 234 tertiary educational institutions in the 16 regions, ahead of re-opening on Monday, June 15.

The items include 600,000 units of reusable face masks, 200,000 millilitres of hand sanitizers, 1,700 Veronica Buckets, 34,000 tissue papers and 34,000 packets of soap, as well as 900 thermometer guns.

About 200,000 staff and students are supposed to benefit from the logistics, comprising 44,000 teaching and non-teaching staff and 128,000 students.

Each person is supposed to receive three sets of reusable face masks, alcohol-based hand sanitizers and tissue papers to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Personnel of the Ghana Airforce airlifted the items to the regional capitals on Saturday, June 13.

The Government, through the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, has disinfected both public and private tertiary educational institutions.

Universities with their own hospitals and clinics have been equipped with the necessary PPE, and have isolation centres to deal with any positive cases.

All other institutions without their own clinics and hospitals have been mapped to health facilities.

The distribution of the logistics is being undertaken by a special task force of the Government, under the supervision of the Senior Minister, Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo.

The regional breakdown of the tertiary educational institutions are as follows: Greater Accra-57; Ashanti-31; Eastern-22; Northern-14; and Central-18.

The rest are; Volta-17; Western-11; Upper East-11; Upper West-11; Bono-14; Ahafo- nine; Bono East- six; Western North-57; Oti- three; Savannah- four and North East-one.

  • FULL TEXT: Akufo-Addos 11th address to the nation on measures to fight coronavirus

    Fellow Ghanaians, good evening.

Exactly two weeks ago, I came again into your homes to outline a roadmap for easing the restrictions put in place to help contain the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in our country. I indicated that it would be a phased approach, involving a selected list of public gatherings, based on their risk profile, socio-economic impact, and, most importantly, our capacity to enforce and to respond, in the event of a flair up in our number of infections.

Since then, we have had some of our religious institutions opening their doors to worshippers, whilst respecting the limits on numbers, and maintaining the strict protocols announced; others have decided to remain closed until further notice. Private burials are taking place, market places, public transport, including domestic air transport, restaurants, hotels, individual and non-contact sports, and our constitutional and statutory bodies are conducting their activities in accordance with social distancing and the relevant hygiene protocols.

From tomorrow, Monday, 15th June, the last batch of institutions in this phased approach, our educational institutions, will begin to re-open, with final year students in our tertiary colleges and universities returning to school to prepare for and take their exit examinations. As has been stated, final year senior high school (SHS 3) students, together with SHS 2 Gold Track students, will resume on 22nd June; and final year junior high school (JHS 3) students, the week after, on 29th June.

The decision to include our schools in phase one of the easing of restrictions was taken advisedly. Some argue that we are putting the lives of our students, teachers and non-teaching staff in danger by this re-opening, citing the examples of other countries, who have done so and recorded spikes in their infection case counts. I have stated, on several occasions, that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to the resolution of this pandemic. We have our own unique situation in the country, and we have always taken that it into account in dealing with this disease, much as we are prepared to learn from the examples of others.

Fellow Ghanaians, over the last three (3) months, every aspect of our national life has been affected by this virus. We have had to take deliberate steps to ensure that our society, in the face of the pandemic, is able to function, and continues to strive to deliver the results of progress, prosperity and development, for which we all yearn. Saving lives, jobs and livelihoods, revitalising our economy, and safeguarding the future of our country have been at the heart of this endeavour. We cannot say that, because of the pandemic, we are no longer interested in issues of social justice, such as education and health.

Education, indeed, is the key to the future of our country. The quality of education that our educational institutions produce, ultimately, will determine the success or otherwise of our nation. We, therefore, have to find a way of guaranteeing the prospects of the generation of young people who are the objects of education today, and who represent our future.

We have to do everything within our power to protect their potential, and, thereby, help preserve our future. We cannot afford to let the pandemic undermine our chances for survival and progress. We have to confront our present and future with confidence, knowing fully well that we must remain, at all times, vigilant and careful.

So, from tomorrow, operating with half the class size, final year students will begin a six-week period of learning to finish their respective programmes. Subsequently, for a period of four weeks, they will sit for their exit examinations. It must be put on record that some final year University students will not be returning to school, as some of them, through virtual means, have already sat their exit examinations.

Prior to their return to school, Government, through the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, has ensured that all tertiary institutions, public and private, have been disinfected. Universities, with their own hospitals and clinics, have been equipped with the necessary personal protective equipment, and have isolation centres to deal with any positive cases. All other institutions, without their own clinics and hospitals, have been mapped to health facilities. There will be no mass gatherings and no sporting activities. Religious activities, under the new protocols, will be permitted. Social distancing and the wearing of face masks must become the norm on campus. To aid in this effort, a total of six hundred thousand (600,000) face masks has been distributed to the tertiary institutions. This is to enable every student, teaching and non-teaching staff to have three (3) reusable face masks. In addition to this, one thousand seven hundred (1,700) Veronica buckets, two hundred thousand (200,000) litres of hand sanitisers, three thousand, four hundred (3,400) litres of liquid soap, and nine hundred (900) thermometer guns have been distributed, with the transportation and delivery of these items being overseen by the special logistics team of the Government Committee, chaired by the sagacious, experienced politician, the Senior Minister, Hon. Yaw Osafo Maafo, that is supervising the re-opening of the schools.

I met with the Vice Chancellors of the universities, both public and private, last Tuesday, who pledged that they would co-operate to ensure that this exercise is effectively undertaken, and I thank them very much for their co-operation. Our intention is to secure the lives of the nearly two hundred thousand (200,000) students, lecturers and non-teaching staff, who will be returning to campus from tomorrow, and I appeal to them also to do their bit to help us succeed. I urge them to adhere to enhanced personal hygiene and social distancing protocols, wash their hands with soap under running water, refrain from shaking hands, and wear their masks to, in and from the lecture halls, and on the campus, generally.

Fellow Ghanaians, I have to address a matter which has to do with our case count, especially in recent weeks, and which has given cause for anxiety. The increase in numbers indicates that the virus has spread and continues to spread. We have to bear in mind, at all times, that the more people we test for the virus, the more people we are likely to discover as positive, and, thus, have the opportunity to isolate and treat them. If we do not test people for the virus, we will not find the persons who are positive, let alone isolate them from the population and treat them, and prevent them from spreading the virus.

For example, the total number of tests that we have conducted in Ghana, with a population of thirty-one million, two hundred and fifty-four thousand three hundred and thirty-one (254,331), is one of the highest on the African continent. Furthermore, many countries in the world, including several of the developed economies, are not implementing a policy of enhanced contact tracing, and this makes our data qualitatively different and more effective in the fight against COVID-19. Indeed, the success of our tracing, testing and treating will lead, in the end, to a reduction in the number of cases. That is what we are working for.

Understandably, much focus has been placed on the rise in the total number of confirmed cases. As at midnight of 13th June, the total number of positives, cumulatively, stands at eleven thousand, nine hundred and sixty-four (11,964), out of the two hundred and fifty-four thousand three hundred and thirty-one (254,331), tests conducted. We have a total of four thousand, two hundred and fifty-eight (4,258) patients who have fully recovered, have been discharged, and are now free of the virus. So, our scrutiny, in effect, must be on the number of active cases, i.e. people who remain on our books as still positive. Hence, as things stand now, the total number of people with the virus, that is active cases from our tests, is seven thousand, six hundred and fifty-two (7,652). Our positivity rate, i.e. the ratio of positive cases to total tests conducted, stands at 4.7%. In our hospitals and isolation centres, we currently have thirteen (13) persons severely ill, six (6) persons critically ill, with three (3) persons on ventilators.

Mercifully for us, by the grace of God, the number of COVID-19 related deaths, sad though each death is, continues to remain very low, one of the lowest in Africa and the world. With fifty-four (54) deaths currently reported by the Ghana Health Service thus far in Ghana, the ratio of deaths to positive cases stands at 0.4%, compared to the global average of 5.5%, and the African average of 2.6%. The number of severe and critically ill also continues to be low. I am relating all these figures not to engender any false, feel-good factor, but as statements of fact that must provide the context for us, when we examine our figures. If, indeed, we are to be guided by the data, then we must look at the data in all its ramifications, not just one particular aspect of them. That is the proper way to do justice to the data.

I am, thus, in no way suggesting that we should let our guard down, and throw out of the window the efforts we have made in bringing us this far, where we have become a reference point for many in the handling of this pandemic. On the contrary, as we begin to ease the restrictions, we must be even more disciplined in our adherence to the personal hygiene and social distancing measures we have become accustomed to, we must keep fit, and we must continue to eat our local foods to boost our immune systems. This is how we can prevent our healthcare services and our heroic healthcare workers from being overwhelmed, due to an increase in demand for hospital care.

Nevertheless, I implore you to pay attention to your health, when you begin to experience symptoms such as fever, persistent cough, bodily pains, loss of taste and smell, and difficulty in breathing, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility. I remain concerned about the stigma associated with this disease. Stories of persons who have recovered from this disease, and being shunned by their own relatives and communities, are a source of considerable worry to me, because they undermine our efforts to fight it. There is nothing shameful about testing positive. We do not have to lose our sense of community because of this pandemic.

Government, through the Ghana Health Service, continues to monitor, on a daily basis, the spread of the virus, and has benchmarks of health outcomes, which define the mitigation measures that must be pursued to curb the spread of the disease, and enable us to reassess the easing of restrictions.

It is important for me to remind residents of the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions, where the great majority of cases have been recorded, and in the Western and Central Regions, where we are seeing an increase in infection cases, to continue to adhere strictly to the social distancing and enhanced hygiene protocols announced. With the doctors and scientists telling us that the virus is transmitted from human contact, through talking, singing, coughing and sneezing, which results in sending droplets of the virus from one person to another, residents of these four regions, and, indeed, all Ghanaians, must remember that the wearing of masks is now mandatory. Leaving our homes without a face mask or face covering on is an offence. The Police have been instructed to enforce this directive, which is the subject of an Executive Instrument.

Let me repeat: our survival is in our own hands. If we are lax and inattentive, we will continue to have serious challenges with the virus. If we are mindful and self-disciplined, we have it in us to defeat this pandemic, and help return our lives to normalcy. I appeal to each and every one of you for your help in this regard. That is the surest way to realising our collective vision of building a new Ghanaian civilization where the rule of law is not a slogan, but a directive principle of state development; where we deliver social and economic transformation that has a meaningful impact on the lives of all our people; where a strong and vibrant economy creates jobs for the masses of our young people, and, in the process, creates a society of opportunities and aspirations for all; where we are no longer pawns nor victims of the world order; and where the vision of our founding fathers of a free, progressive and prosperous Ghana is attained. Let us, together, rise to the occasion, and fulfill our common destiny. We can do it!

In conclusion, permit me to pay brief tribute to the memory of an old and valiant colleague in the struggle of the New Patriotic Party and in the work of the Akufo-Addo government, the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, the Chief Executive of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. K.K Sam, Egya Sam to me and many, whose efforts in enforcing social distancing protocols at the Sekondi and Takoradi markets were, recently, highly commended by me, and who sadly passed away on Friday, as a result of a COVID-related death. May his soul rest in perfect peace in the bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again. Let us also wish our hardworking Minister for Health, Hon. Kwaku Agyeman Manu, MP for Dormaa Central, a speedy recovery from the virus, which he contracted in the line of duty, and is a stable condition.

May God bless us all, and our homeland Ghana, and make her great and strong.

I thank you for your attention.

On ‘Entertainment City’ hosted by controversial broadcaster, Nana Adwoa Annan on Atinka TV, Freda Rhymz who was responding to Eno Barony’s assertion, said the ‘Heavy Load’ rapper has every right to say what she said, but she cannot extend her kingship on her.

The prolific female rapper defended that if Eno is a King, then she is in her own lane and territory, but not over her.

“She can claim whatever crown she wants to claim, that’s accepted, but then it’s in her lane. Everyone has their lane,” said Freda Rhymz.

Sounding extremely disdained the ‘point of correction’ rapper upon persuasion to answer whether she accepts Eno’s kingship jabbed the hostess, Nana Adwoa Annan by stating that,” asking whether I accept Eno’s kingship over me is demeaning to my brand and I cannot take that”.

  • Kevin-Prince Boateng returns to Super Lig action in Besiktas loss to Antalyaspor

Kevin-Prince Boateng was back in action for Besiktas from the resumption of the Turkish Super Lig, but he was on the losing side in 2-1 defeat to Antalyaspor at Vodafone Park on Saturday evening.

Football in the Turkish top-flight had been on hold since mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic which has affected more than 170,000 people to date in the country.

The last game Besiktas played before the lockdown was against Istanbul rivals Galatasaray which ended in a goalless draw.

On Saturday however, they started on the back foot with Sinan Gumus and Amilton Silva scoring for the visitors in the 15th and 35th minutes of play, respectively.

Adem Ljajic scored the consolation goal for Besiktas in the 68th minute after coming off the bench.

Besiktas have now lost nine games in the Super Lig this season, winning 13 and drawing five.

They remain in the fifth spot on the table, but could see their five-point gap away from Europa League qualification widen should Sivasspor see off Denizlispor at the Yeni Sivas 4 Eylul Stadium on Monday night.

  • Former defender Hans Sarpei wants Germany to play Black Stars in Ghana

Former Ghana left-back Hans Adu Sarpei says he would like to see the German national team play against the Black Stars in Ghana to serve as awareness in the fight against racism.

Sarpei has joined the debate in the wake of the fight against racism in the world which has now spread to the football industry.

According to the former Wolfsburg right-back, the German Football Association (DFB) can do more in the fight against racism.

He suggested that the DFB should play as guest to the Black Stars to serve as cognizance in the fight against racism.

“The DFB does too little for me. Hang up signs and the players then come in and say: We are against racism, that is not enough, ”said the former football professional to TV station Phoenix. He referred to the high radiance of the DFB team.

“Let’s have a look at the German national team. Sané, Boateng, Gnabry. Where do they all come from? Why don’t we make a game in Ghana, where Boateng’s roots come from. Easy to build bridges. Football has such an effect, such a force. Show people what it’s like in Ghana,” said Sarpei.

Sarpei welcomed the action by FSV Mainz 05 to dismiss a member who had complained about too many black players in the team: “This is a strong reaction from FSV Mainz. But I still wish they had written about it. These colored players, there is a German, an Austrian, a Luxembourger, a Dutchman. ”

A Black Lives Matter badge will feature on all playing shirts for the rest of the season alongside a badge thanking NHS staff for their work during the coronavirus outbreak.

BBC Sport has learned that Watford captain Troy Deeney played a pivotal role in the discussions between club captains and the Premier League, alongside Leicester City’s Wes Morgan.

Deeney’s girlfriend, Alisha Hosannah, has designed the Black Lives Matter badge that will be used on the players’ shirts.

Several Premier League squads have already ‘taken a knee’ in training-ground images shared on social media, and anti-racism charity Kick It Out had asked that players feel free to do so on the pitch.

The Football Association has said it will take a “common sense approach” to such protests.

Four players, including Borussia Dortmund’s England forward Jadon Sancho, were initially investigated by the Bundesliga authorities for making clear their support for anti-racism demonstrations in the wake of the death of 46-year-old Floyd in police custody in the United States last month.

None was subsequently punished and the German Football Association said it would continue to allow such displays of support over the coming weeks.

The Premier League resumes behind closed doors on 17 June after a three-month suspension caused by the pandemic.

‘It’s a great start, but I then want to see something tangible’

Former England, Newcastle and Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas, who made 280 Premier League appearances between 2002 and 2013, hopes the campaign for change continues beyond those first 12 games.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, he said: “It’s brilliant that all the clubs and the players have come together and said that this is what they want. I think it’s a great message because the Premier League is one of the most powerful businesses in the world.

“I’m all for it in terms of the representation and for each club and player to be doing it. But I think the question on most people’s lips is: what next?

“What about the week after? Does it just fade out and it’s ‘OK, we did our little bit and it’s gone now’. Or are we actually going to see some real change within our game, our own house?

“There’s been huge conversations about the lack of opportunities for black coaches. We need to quash all of that by starting to implement [diversity] at the hiring level of management, at the top clubs and within the FA.”

  • Zylofon Music’s new signee Tiisha will suffer – Ola Michael spells doom

Host of Neat FM’s ”Entertainment Ghana”, Ola Michael has spelled doom for the newest signee of Zylofon Music, Tiisha.

Tiisha, an Afro-Pop musician, was on Friday, June 12, 2020 unveiled as the new face of the music record label, Zylofon Music.

The event was also to mark the re-commencement of the music record label owned by embattled Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Menzgold, Nana Appiah Mensah, popularly called NAM 1.

The event saw in attendance numerous entertainment dignitaries including Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy and actress Zynell Zuh.

Touching on the ceremony, Ola Michael was without a shred of doubt that Tiisha will suffer the same fate of her predecessors like Becca and Joyce Blessing among others whose music career nearly took a fall while on the record label.

According to him, the Afro-Pop musician has also signed a risky deal stating emphatically ”those that they (Zylofon Music) are signing the deal with will suffer”.

Ola Michael, speaking as a panel member on Saturday’s ”Entertainment Review” on Peace FM, further slammed the management of Zylofon Music saying it’s a wrong timing for them to commence operations particularly when NAM 1 has failed to reimburse Menzgold customers whose monies are locked up in the gold firm.

The gold firm has become defunct after it was closed down by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for operating without licence.

”If someone tells me to separate Zylofon from Menzgold, me, I won’t agree. I feel the whole Zylofon building was erected with money from Menzgold. Because who can tell me that, since Zylofon was started, the whole establishment, music and film, has earned them a profit of GHC 1 million? I think now that they’re reopening it is a bit insensitive to those whose money are locked up at Menzgold. It’s very, very insensitive.

”We will be branded as doomsayers for saying this…I don’t know why the need now and why they want to do it now. I don’t know the plan but I feel it’s a bit insensitive to those whose money is at Menzgold”, he told host Akwasi Aboagye.

  • It’s insensitive to sign a new artiste when you owe Menzgold customers Ola Michael slams NAM 1

Host of Neat FM’s ”Entertainment Ghana” and movie producer Ola Michael, has called out Nana Appiah Mensah, CEO of embattled Gold dealership company Menzgold, over his decision to sign a new artiste unto Zylofon Music Record Label.

According to Ola Michael, it is insensitive on the part of NAM 1 and his team, to spend money to sign a new artiste when they have not paid the people who invested their monies at Menzgold.

Ola Michael, speaking as a panel member on Peace FM’s ”Entertainment Review” programme, further slammed the management of Zylofon Music saying it’s a wrong timing for them to commence operations especially when Nana Appiah Mensah has failed to reimburse Menzgold customers whose monies are locked up in the gold firm.

He said it was impossible to decouple Zylofone Media and Menzgold as suggested by people, because clearly Zylofon Media was built from the money invested in Menzgold.

Menzgold went underwater when the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) asked them not to take any new deposits about two years ago, which has prompted many demonstrations from its customers, who have publicly demanded their monies be paid back to them.

• Kwasi Appiah clarifies captaincy rotational policy comments

Former Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah has clarified his comments on the captaincy rotational policy, explaining that his recommendation is meant for the future.

Appiah suggested that to prevent the perennial captaincy row that has plagued the team, a rotational policy similar to that of Brazil could be implemented.

Speaking on ATL FM in Cape Coast the ex-gaffer of the national team explained that for now Dede Ayew is the captain and should be left to lead the team.

‘ I was a not saying Ghana should adopt the captaincy rotational policy now since it will make no sense because Dede Ayew has just been handed over the armband. I was suggesting that if there are captaincy challenges in the team in the future then we can try the rotational policy, maybe it could work for us.’

He further opined that ‘ I was not advising the current head coach as purported in the media to change the captain but I was suggesting an option should we find ourselves in the same soup in future as a country’.

Appiah thinks that change is difficult but some countries have tried it and there is nothing wrong trying new thing if the old system keeps generating issues.

  • Mahama behaves like a child – NPP Communicator

Aspiring parliamentary candidate on the ticket of NPP for the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa Constituency, Mr. Bannasco Francis Ampong-Ansah says flagbearer for the NDC, “John Dramani Mahama is still not out of his ‘kpokpogbligbli’ sickness acquired during the early days of his Presidency”.

” . . How can a whole former President not be consistent in his decision making or contributions towards issues of public interest. His (ex-president Mahama) mode of addressing issues and decision taking depicts a child riding a Bicycle that is without brakes,” he posited.

Speaking on UTV’s late news discussion show, Ampong-Ansah indicated that after analysing speeches made by members of the NDC especially its leaders, it is clear the opposition party is demon-possessed and want to create confusion in the country since they know that defeat is their portion in this year’s general elections.

“Members of the NDC after studying the hand writings on the wall are very much aware that the spirit of darkness surrounding them cannot bring them victory, their reason behind the numerous noise to create an impression of being cheated when they are much aware of total defeat in the upcoming elections,” he slammed.

The NPP stalwart further stressed that the “2020 general elections is a thank you victory from Ghanaians to Akufo-Addo for honoring every promise made them, so Ex-president Mahama should not expect anything positive even if he creates a permanent bed in court he sleeps on.”

  • Dr Opuni case: Court directs defence to move application for stay on June 18

An Accra High Court hearing the case of Dr Stephen Opuni, the former CEO of COCOBOD and two others has adjourned hearing of an application for stay of proceedings pending appeal to June 18.

The adjournment was necessitated when it was discovered that Mr Samuel Cudjoe, the Counsel for Dr Opuni was unwell according to Johnson Normesinu, who held brief for him.

The pending application for stay of proceedings pending an appeal at the Court Appeal was expected to have been moved today, but due to the indisposition of Mr Cudjoe.

The court on March 16, 2020, dismissed a motion seeking the trial judge, Justice Clemence Honyenugah to recuse himself from continuing with the trial, alleging he made certain comments on a different forum.

The motion was seeking the trial judge, who was a Court of Appeal Judge sitting with additional responsibility as a High Court Judge, to stop the trial and refer the matter to the Chief Justice for reassignment.

The court in its ruling dismissing the application said the allegations raised on his comments were non-judicial and do not touch on the instant case. The court in adjourning the trial on Friday, the Supreme Court judge, said upon hearing Mr Normesinu, holding brief for lawyer Cudjoe, “I believe that I will be a very good person to ask him to move the pending application.”

He said the explanation from the lawyer holding brief for Mr Cudjoe that he had the information this morning and does not even have the brief with him, the adjournment would be granted.

He said the case is a part heard and application must be dealt with expeditiously as possible to pave way for the trial to proceed.

The Judge said he was of the view that the adjournment sought is too long and unacceptable to the court, hence the resort to June 18.

He said earlier on, there have been directives by Chief Justice on adjournments in view of the pandemic but for now, the situation has been revised and that hearing the application should not take so much time.

When the case was called Mr Normesinu told the court that Mr Cudjoe wanted the trial be adjourned to July 8.

“My Lord, my learned senior who was preparing to come and move our application for stay of proceedings pending appeal fell ill this morning and instructed our office manager to type a letter to be delivered to this honourable court for the case to be adjourned to July 8,” he said.

He said he was only informed about the situation and he does not even have the information to move the application “I am therefore incapacitated to move same and in view of this we will be grateful if your Lord will grant our humble request and adjourned trial”.

Mrs Stella Ohene-Appiah, Principal State Attorney in her response said: “July 8 is almost a month from today, and my Lord the business for today (Friday) is for counsel to move his application for stay of proceedings.”

The Principal State Attorney explained that this was only an application and not the trial of which counsel must, by all means, be present.

She told the court that already further cross-examination by counsel for Seidu Agongo and Agricult Ghana Limited has stalled for quite some time now and therefore “this rather long adjournment is further going to delay the trial.”

Dr Opuni and Mr Seidu Agogngo are facing 27 charges, including defrauding by false pretences, wilfully causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, corruption by a public officer and contravention of the Public Procurement Act.

They have both pleaded not guilty to the charges and are on a GH¢300,000.00 self-recognisance bail each.

  • Rawlings commends Scholarship Secretariat for localising award process

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has in a meeting with the Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat, Kingsley Agyemang, and members of his management team commended them for the decentralization of the scholarship process.

He said the difficulty many deserving students suffer in their bid to obtain scholarships will be a thing of the past if the Secretariat supervises the process adequately to ensure that there is no discrimination.

“I am impressed that responsibility has been devolved to the Districts. There has been so much prejudice against the scholarship secretariat because of the perception that there is discrimination in the choices made and it only benefits privileged persons. You have to monitor the devolved process otherwise the very thing you are trying to avoid will be repeated.

“During my tenure as President, I devoted 40 percent of my time to checking corruptible tendencies. That is why I was able to contain corruption. We have difficulties giving fairness a chance in this country with influence often overriding ability and merit. This development makes me feel good and I urge you to give the new process more publicity so deserving students can take advantage of the process,” former President Rawlings said.

Madam Ebi Bright, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate for Tema Central, who was part of the meeting, stated that there is a cultural tendency towards patronage in the country. People who have access to power tend to always compromise situations. She noted that even with the devolution of the process it is still going to be difficult to balance the good intentions of the Secretariat and urged the Registrar and his team to do their utmost to support local talent and ideas in a fair environment.

An aide to the former President, Dr. Donald Agumenu noted that the Scholarship Secretariat plays an integral role in building human capital and called for a fair distribution of scholarships and adequate and regular evaluation of the process.

The Scholarship Registrar informed the former President at Wednesday’s meeting that his outfit, working in collaboration with regional and district authorities had devolved the selection process to ensure that deserving students across the country were offered opportunities to obtain scholarships to further their education.

The Registrar said district assemblies will be responsible under stated guidelines for publishing scholarship openings using local information channels. Shortlisted applicants will then appear before the District Scholarship Secretariat after which a recommendation will be made to the Central Scholarship Review Committee secretariat for the award of scholarships.

The Composition of the Review Committee will be made up of the District or Municipal Chief Executives, a representative from the traditional authority which is very dominant within the district, a representative from the Ghana Education Service or any tertiary institution in the district, and two other representatives to be appointed by the Scholarship Secretariat.

Other members of the Scholarship Secretariat at the meeting were Richard Aidoo – Director of Accounts, Joseph Essah – Deputy Director, Administration, Grace Afari-Mensah, and Jennifer Evelyn Bedu Assistant Protocol Officers.

Members of President Rawlings’ team included Dr. Anthony Dzegede, Kobina Andoh Amoakwa, and Ogochukwu Nweke.

  • What constitutes your ‘flawed election’? – Atik Mohammed quizzes Mahama

PNC Stalwart, Atik Mohammed has rebuked former President John Dramani Mahama over his recent comments that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will reject the results of a flawed elections by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The former President said this during the 28th anniversary of the NDC on Wednesday, June 10, 2020.

    EC To Rig Elections

Before former President John Mahama’s warning to the Electoral Commission, the NDC had challenged the Commission’s decision to compile a new voters’ register and also kicked against the use of only Ghana card and passport for the impending mass registration exercise.

The party believes the EC and the National Identification Authority (NIA) are conspiring to rig this year’s elections in order to retain President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in office.

The NDC leadership and members further accuse the EC of planning to disenfranchise many eligible Ghanaian voters.

    NDC Goes To Supreme Court

The NDC has therefore petitioned the Supreme Court seeking two reliefs with the first being that the EC’s decision to compile a new voters’ register is in violation of Article 45 of the 1992 constitution which reads that the EC can compile a new register only once and periodically revise it.

While the second relief they are seeking the court to do is to determine whether or not the Commission’s decision to exclude the existing voters’ ID card is constitutional.

A seven panel-member of the court, presided over by the Chief Justice, heard the NDC’s case on Thursday, June 12, 2020 and directed the party to make a choice between the two reliefs explaining that, per the court rules, a party cannot seek a relief and also ask for another relief in the alternative.

    NDC Abandons Case

However, during the hearing of the case at the Supreme Court, the party dropped the case of whether or not the EC can compile a new voters’ register and instead went for a declaration on whether or not the decision to exclude the voters’ ID card as a form of identification in the exercise is constitutional.

    John Mahama Warns EC

Delivering a speech at the NDC’s 28th anniversary, Mr. Mahama served notice to the EC ahead of the December polls saying ”as leader of the NDC, I wish to serve notice that we shall do all our parts to ensure that our country remains peaceful and that the electoral process proceeds smoothly, but let nobody assume that we will accept the results of a flawed elections”.

    Define ‘Flawed Election’!

Addressing the issue on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, Atik Mohammed asked former President John Mahama to clarify his ambiguous statements, particularly now that his party has rejected their case against the compilation of a new voters’ register by the Electoral Commission (EC).

He told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that Mr. Mahama’s warning to the EC is subject to different interpretations which, if care is not taken, will lead members and supporters of his party to misconduct themselves during the impending mass registration exercise and the December elections.

”What constitutes a flawed election? In the context of this new registration, how will that contribute or how will that lead to a flawed election?

”He needed to define for us what will constitute a flawed election. We all can be do our analysis on that basis but to just make a baseless comment while we’re about to do the registration and so forth, and now that you have agreed that we should compile a new register; how does it that fit into your definition of flawed election?”

“Let us endeavor to be safe by taking good care of ourselves,” Mr. Ayisi said.

  • Australia to allow 10,000-person gatherings in July

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has just announced the proposal – which will largely benefit sporting matches.

He said mid-sized stadiums would be able to have a quarter of their 40,000 seats filled – and the same goes for outdoor cultural events.

Crowds will be allowed if patrons are ticketed and seated, and maintain a 1.5m (4.9ft) distance. Australia’s football codes have been lobbying hard in recent weeks for spectators to return to stadiums.

The allowance falls under Stage 3 – the final phase of the country’s plan to come out of lockdown.

Authorities have also revised a 100-person cap for indoor spaces (workplaces, weddings, funerals) in favour of a four square metres per person rule.

  • DKB and Efia Odo clash on social media over the true origin of the Holy Bible

Comedian DKB and socialite Efia Odo have locked horns in stiff disagreement over the Bible and whether it was written by God or man.

According to the Efia Odo, the Bible contains a lot of contradictions and that defeats the fact that God inspired people to write the Bible.

In adding more flesh to her point, she said she does not understand why God will say in the book of Exodus that masters have the right to punish their slaves if only they do not die.

DKB, who was quietly monitoring the sentiments the tweet was generating wrote that Christians no longer dwell on things in the Old Testament but are living and thriving under the Grace of God in the New Testament.

DKB then said Efia Odo is a qualified candidate for hell if she does not stop exposing her body in photos.

  • Star French chef comes up with ‘coronavirus-safe’ restaurant

French superchef Alain Ducasse is using a ventilation system similar to those in hospital operating theatres to reopen one of his Paris restaurants.

Ducasse, whose restaurants have 17 Michelin stars – the most of any chef in the world – is installing the sophisticated system in his historic Allard bistro in the chic Saint Germain des Pres district of the French capital so it can open later this month.

French restaurants have been allowed to serve on their terraces for 10 days but strict social distancing rules mean the interiors remain off-limits.

Diners in Paris bistros and cafes traditionally sit almost elbow to elbow on small tables – a nightmare for restaurateurs who have been told by that tables must now be at least one metre apart.

“No restaurant can survive with only half of its customers,” Ducasse told AFP as he unveiled his air filtration system at the Allard, whose tables will also be screened off with sail cloth blinds.

Large white air “socks” decorated with drawings of the gods and goddesses of the wind hangover every table from the overhead ventilation pipes, gently pushing stale air away.

And customers will also be offered round transparent “separators” to be placed on their table for additional safety when French restaurants are due to fully reopen on June 22.

Ducasse said his prototype will “give extra safety to customers in confined spaces” and was a possible solution for tightly packed bistros which could lose half their tables if distancing rules are rigidly applied.

Designer Patrick Jouin, whose work is displayed at MOMA in New York as well as the Paris Pompidou Centre, said he talked to scientists and virologists before coming up with the air system.

    ‘Appropriate modernity’

He said its efficiency was comparable to those used in hospital operating theatres and intensive care units.

Juin said he contacted Ducasse in April to try and square the circle of social distancing, which he knew could be disastrous for restaurants in the long term.

The designer said that his extraction and filtration system means the safe distance between people can be reduced from a metre to 32 centimetres (about a foot).

Ducasse insisted the system does not spoil the atmosphere of the 1930s institution, with its red velvet banquettes and period wallpaper.

“We have preserved the spirit of the place,” he told AFP. “I love the idea of the just and appropriate modernity we have put into the DNA of this 1930s restaurant.

“Even if COVID-19 disappears, I will keep this design,” Ducasse vowed.

The chef said he wanted to “show that it was possible to do things differently and not just to passively accept (the constraints imposed by the virus), but to actively work with them.”

Jouin said normal restaurant air conditioning systems work very fast, which ironically can actually help concentrate the viral charge.

So he had to come up with a way of reducing the speed while “changing more of the air”.

“We take the air from the outside and pass it through a filter which makes it absolutely clean. Into that, we inject slightly cooled pure air above each table at a very low speed.”

Jouin refused to say how much the system cost but insisted it was not expensive. “Restaurants will be able to afford it,” he said.

  • Appointment of Black Stars captain should be the sole prerogative of the coach – Frimpong Manso

Former Black Stars defender and current Nkoranza Warriors head coach, Frimpong Manso has opined selection of captains for the Black Stars should be done solely by the head coach of the team.

According to him, Liverpool appointed Virgil van Dijk as a captain whilst old players were there without seniority or how long being with the team.

Speaking on one Ashanti Region-based Wontumi Radio and TV Nationwide Sports, he claimed that it should be the sole prerogative of the coach in terms of appointing a captain.

Talking about his time at Black Stars captaincy position issues he said, “The issue of the captaincy was there and there was a pain because we were all shocked after the team’s meeting because everyone was expecting an announcement which will favour them that’s why I said it should be appointed by the coaches because he handles the team.

“If the coach notices that this player can help him on the pitch in terms of sending messages and encouraging the players when things are not going on right then he can decide to appoint.

“Many players were at Liverpool before Virgil van Dijk arrived but the captain was given to him.

“At where we are today, for me it should be sole prerogative of the coach in terms of appointing a captain.” He concluded
