  • 5 problems with long-distance relationships

Long-distance relationships are like those people in your class that no one talks to except when they absolutely have to.

As lovers know all too well, relationships/marriages are not bed of roses and every relationship is susceptible to highs and lows.
There’ll be patchy periods that you’ll need to navigate with understanding, teamwork and an unwavering commitment.

For partners in long-distance relationships, these things would be required in extra measure as these are the special kind of problems you’ll likely be facing in the relationship:

    1. Frustration

The frustration is strong when you go long spells without seeing the one you love and it is especially worse at periods when you feel the relentless urge for sex and you have to suffer through suppressing it.

“Long distance relationship sucks if you (the parties) are sexually active.

“It sucks when you are horny, and when I mean horny, the kind of horny that needs a quick fix and a d**k and there is nothing you can do about it.

“You are subjected to phone sex, that’s if you all do it and your fingers while phone sexing.” says Remi, a Lawyer in Lagos whose boyfriend is far away in Abuja.

    2. Insecurity

You’ll also fear what your partner might be up to where he or she is. And if you allow this get the better of you, it won’t be long before paranoia swallows you up and blows up your relationship to pieces.

    3. The effort is enormous

Every relationship requires serious work and effort to remain alive. But this is more so for long-distance relationships.

    4. The temptation to cheat

Never will the urge to cheat and be with other people be as strong as when you have to stay for long periods without seeing the love of your life. The temptation is achingly severe and it takes extra effort to not lapse into infidelity.

“Long-distance relationships tempt one to cheat, but try as much as possible not to fall into that,” Remi further says.

“It’s very hard to stay faithful, quite tempting since no one is watching. And you have guys all over you.

“It takes a strong will and determined mind not to cheat on your partner.” she adds.

    5. You might be disappointed

The thing about long-distance relationships is that you could find yourself living in a bubble where things are just fine because you are not seeing each other in the flesh.

Distance cocoons you away from reality until you close the distance between you and that partner and you actually see and come to terms with how they really are.

After Christy in Nigeria had effortlessly been in a blissful relationship with her boyfriend for seven years, he returns from the USA and things just went down the hill from the moment they set eyes on each other.

“Things just went sour from that moment.

“We had silly, meaningless fights till I could not bear it anymore,” she says.

They eventually ended the relationship to the shock of their family and closest friends.

  • Ghana FA cannot extend financial support to clubs without approval from FIFA – Fred Pappoe

Former Ghana FA Vice President, Fred Pappoe says the $500,000 stimulus package from FIFA to the Ghana FA is solely for operational cost and not to be shared among the clubs.

The GFA is set to receive $500,000 as a stimulus package from FIFA to its Member Associations due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Some Ghanaian club administrators are demanding for a share of the money from the GFA as they call on the FA to extend financial support to the clubs due to the pandemic.

Fred Pappoe explained that the money from FIFA cannot be shared to the clubs because it is meant to carry out a specific purpose which the FA will later account for.

“The money is for FA operational expenses and there are clear guidelines on what the money can be used for. It makes it difficult if clubs are demanding for a share of the money. The prescription and guidelines which accompanies the money will not allow the GFA to do that”, he told Happy FM.

“The monies given to the GFA will be accounted for, and there will be auditing as well by FIFA”.

He suggested that the GFA should send a proposal to FIFA if they are to extend support to the clubs.

“I am sure the GFA can put up a proposal to FIFA to explain to them about sharing the money with the Ghanaian clubs during these difficult times”.

  • Coronavirus: France offers subsidy to tempt lockdown cyclists

France is encouraging people to cycle to keep pollution levels low once lockdown restrictions end.

Under the €20 million (£17m; $21.7m) scheme, everyone will be eligible for bike repairs of up to €50 at registered mechanics.

The funding will also help pay for cycle training and temporary parking spaces.

Nations worldwide are grappling with ways to change urban transport in light of the coronavirus.

Emergency planners in London fear the Tube will not be able to cope once lockdown is lifted. A report seen by the BBC says that social distancing rules would reduce capacity to 15% of normal levels, and 12% on buses.

Moreover, pollution levels have dropped worldwide, and many are seeking to keep those levels low.

On Thursday the International Energy Agency (IEA) forecast a 6% drop in energy demand for the year – it said this would lead to a drop in carbon dioxide emissions of 8%, six times larger than the biggest fall in 2009 which followed the financial crash.

    What are the proposals?

Elisabeth Borne, Minister for Ecological Transition, said the move was aimed at reducing driving when commuting or for short journeys to keep air pollution levels down once restrictions are lifted.

In normal times, 60% of journeys made in France are less than 5 kilometres [3 miles] – making bicycles “a real transport solution”, she said.

France has announced plans to slowly wind down its restrictions from 11 May. Latest figures on Wednesday showed a recorded death toll of 24,087, with close to 130,000 confirmed cases.

Ms Borne announced the scheme in association with the Federation of Bicycle Users (FUB) on Wednesday.

They will register a network of more than 3,000 repairmen on the FUB website who will agree to fix any bike for up to €50, such as changing tyres or old chains.

Citizens will not receive a printed cheque, but will go to these registered mechanics who will then be reimbursed by the state. People will have to pay any additional costs out of their own pockets.

The rest of the funding will go towards temporary bike racks and cycling training and refresher courses. Local governments are also being encouraged to lay down bike lanes across the country.

    What are European cities doing?

The French capital Paris is barring private cars from one of its major central roads, the Rue de Rivoli, which will instead have separate lanes for bicycles and for buses, taxis, emergency vehicles and certain deliveries.

The measures will remain in place for the duration of the pandemic but should they prove successful they will be made permanent, Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on Thursday.

Paris is also aiming to create cycle routes along the paths of its three busiest Metro lines, she said.

The aim was to prevent the city being “swamped by cars, synonymous with pollution”, she was quoted by Le Monde newspaper as saying.

The Belgian capital Brussels on Wednesday announced the creation of 40km of additional cycle paths to ensure fewer people use public transport as restrictions are relaxed.

And the Italian city of Milan, which is in the worst-affected region of Lombardy, has begun reallocating space on some of its major roads for walking and cycling.

It is widening pavements, adding 35km of cycle lanes and encouraging the use of scooters as a way of pushing alternatives to car use. The Milan subway’s capacity is to be reduced by up to 30% to ensure all passengers are able to stay a metre away from each other.

And in the German capital Berlin, the authorities have temporarily widened some cycle lanes.

  • QNET investigates agents reportedly involved in employment scam

Direct selling firm, QNET, says it is investigating 13 of its local independent representatives (IRS), for their alleged involvement in the deal.

Officials of the company say the suspects have been blocked from their system and notices issued to victims, pending the outcome of police investigations.

The suspected fraudulent act has left some West African nationals who were lured into Ghana supposedly to work in mining companies stranded.

It has also denied that some four persons arrested in Kumasi over the alleged employment scam, are linked to the company.

Police at Abuakwa arrested the four persons last week after 29 West African nationals accused them of using mining jobs to bait them into networking marketing.

The complainants made up of nationals of The Gambia, Sierra Leone, among others, claimed they paid 700 dollars each to the alleged scammers.

Efforts to retrieve the monies paid to the supposed agents of QNet, have been unsuccessful, leaving the to live on benevolence of people for survival.

The Abuakwa District Commander of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Superintendent Yaw Asubonteng, on Friday ordered the arrest of three people in connection with the issue.

Police have since received QNET registration details used by the suspects but the company insists, none of them is a worker or agent.

  • Nearly 9,000 Britons fined over lockdown breaches

Nearly 9,000 people have received fines for flouting lockdown restrictions in England and Wales, new figures show.

Police have had powers to issue fixed penalty notices (rather than on-the-spot fines) for alleged breaches since 26 March.

Figures released by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) show that in the month to 27 April, police issued 8,877 fixed-penalty notices in England, and a further 299 in Wales.

Nearly 400 were for repeat offenders – with one individual given six.

Police can issue an initial £60 fixed penalty, which is lowered to £30 if paid within two weeks, before issuing £120 fixed penalties for second-time offenders – a fee which is doubled on each further repeat offence.

Guidelines have been issued to police over imposing lockdown, including a list of ‘reasonable excuses’ for people to leave their homes.

  • Resourceful Belgians team up to supply virus masks

Belgium has promised every resident a protective mask from next week, when the country begins to phase out coronavirus lockdown measures.

With just days to go many doubt the authorities will hit their target, but town mayors like Yves Kinnard are taking matters into their own hands.

From Monday, when Belgium begins to ease its lockdown, anyone taking public transport will need to cover their mouth and nose.

Commercial supplies of face masks have been unpredictable and time is running out, so Kinnard plans to supply the 3,500 members of his community himself.

The 55-year-old mayor in the small eastern town of Lincent has assigned 15,000 euros ($16,300) from the municipal budget to order masks.

Belgian firm YTS received the order for 3,500 masks on April 10 and now they have arrived, shortly before some workers and businesses will go back to work.

First, though, the masks must be distributed door-to-door before the May 1 long weekend.

Kinnard has secured the assistance of fellow elected officials and he used his official car to ferry the order 65 kilometres (40 miles) from the plant in Nivelles.

More that 7,500 Belgians have died in the outbreak, one of the world’s highest per capita fatality rates in a population of 11.5 million.

And there has been media skepticism about the capacity of Prime Minister Sophie Wilmes’ government to deliver on its “promise without a strategy”, as one outlet put it.

On April 24, she outlined a cautious plan to end the lockdown while enforcing some continued social distancing rules to head off a second wave of cases.

She promised that “each citizen would have at least a cloth mask” the simple barrier defences often being sewn together by volunteers and off-duty tailors.

She put no deadline on the vow, and sceptics noted that Belgium has already fallen foul of shortages in medical masks and been let down by some foreign suppliers.

This in turn has led to a number of initiatives by firms, individuals and local governments to fill the gaps, such that from YTS in Nivelles.

The firm usually prints on textiles for restaurants and hotels, and had polyester to hand to relaunch as a mask-maker.

“We called the team, and increased from seven to 15 employees,” said Alexandre De Clerq, the manager. “We rethought the entire logistics chain.”

  • Embrace the return of experience footballers Isaac Twum to GPL clubs

Former captain of Inter Allies Isaac Twum has encouraged Ghana Premier League clubs to embrace the return of experience footballers rather than tagging them as lame dark.

Some section of Ghanaian football advocates describe players who are in their late 20’s as old and waste and that, cannot add value to the game anymore.

But report gathered in the local media suggest that, experienced footballers like Sulley Muntari and Asamoah Gyan are subject of interest for Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

Twum, who was named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2017 WAFU cup of nations after leading the Black Stars B to lift the trophy thinks that the Ghana league will be better off with experience players like Gyan and Muntari.

“The return of Gyan and Muntari in the GPL will help a lot. Even players plying their trade in the local front will be extra motivated to share the field with these stars. Again, their influence will also help the clubs to generate money, so I will entreat clubs not to rule out on players who have seen it all”

“Those players participating in the league will raise its standard and also people will be excited to watch” he told Bryt Power Sports in an interview.

The association is on its knees with huge financial burden crippling the new Executive council.

This was revealed during a Zoom Cloud Meeting with owners of Division One League Zone 1 on Wednesday.

The Kurt Okraku administration inherited a depleted account from the Normalisation committee, putting the finances of the FA in a massive distress.

FA president Kurt Okraku has been holding a high-powered meeting with football club owners in the country amid the coronavirus crisis which has wrecked havoc globally.

The association has been in a disbursement stand-off with clubs over a $500,000 stimulus package from world governing body, FIFA to the Ghana Football Association.

  • Edward Sarpong opens up again on his missed penalty at U-23 AFCON

C.F Esperança de Lagos defender Edward Sarpong has opened up on his missed penalty at the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Sarpong says some of the players refused to take the penalty, hence he stood up to take the decisive penalty in a third-place play-off shoot-out against South Africa.

The 23-year-old blasted his 12-yard effort over the bar, missing a glorious chance to win the match for Ghana as they lost 6-5 on penalties.

As a result, the Black Meteors failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympics which has been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“I was originally not one of the players selected to take the penalty against South Africa but after the first five had taken, no player was willing to take,” Sarpong said in an interview with Saddick Adams on Instagram Live.

“Coach [Ibrahim Tanko] was calling some players to step up and kick but they all refused.

“That is why I stepped up for my country. I think that if I had not played the penalty, the referee would’ve ended the match as some point because nobody was willing to play.”

  • European lockdowns could avert 11,300 air pollution deaths – Researchers

Improved air quality in Europe due to lockdowns to combat the coronavirus pandemic has delivered health benefits equivalent to avoiding 11,300 premature deaths, according to a study published on Thursday.

Researchers extrapolated the likely impact on diseases caused or made worse by air pollution, which has fallen dramatically as hundreds of millions of people have stayed at home over the past month.

“You could compare it to everyone in Europe stopping smoking for a month,” said Lauri Myllyvirta, lead analyst at the Helsinki-based Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), which conducted the study.

“Our analysis highlights the tremendous benefits for public health and quality of life that could be achieved by rapidly reducing fossil fuels in a sustained and sustainable way.”

The benefits in Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy exceeded the equivalent of more than 1,500 premature deaths in each country.

The average European citizen was exposed to nitrogen dioxide levels 37 percent below what would normally have been expected in the 30 days that ended on April 24, CREA said.

The gas is mostly produced from road transport.

Exposure to particulate matter, generated by transport, industry and coal-fired heating, was 12 percent below normal levels, according to the study, which covered 21 European countries.

If sustained, a drop in pollution of this scale could lead to 1.3 million fewer days of absence from work and 6,000 fewer new cases of asthma in children, CREA said.

At the same time, the researchers noted that prolonged exposure to dirty air prior to the pandemic could have caused or exacerbated diabetes, lung disease, heart disease and cancer – all conditions that increase the risk of death for COVID-19 patients.

“There is an overlap between conditions associated with air pollution and those that have increased the risk of dying from COVID-19,” said Sara De Matteis, a professor at Italy’s Cagliari University and member of the European Respiratory Society’s environmental health committee.

Air pollution causes more than 400,000 annual premature deaths in the 27-member European Union and the UK, according to the EU environment agency.

“The impacts are the same or bigger in many other parts of the world,” said Myllyvirta.

In China, NO2 and PM2.5 levels declined by 25 percent and 40 percent, respectively, during the most stringent period of lockdown, with an even sharper fall in Hubei province, where the global pandemic began.

Worldwide air pollution shortens lives by nearly three years on average, and causes 8.8 million premature deaths annually, according to a study last month.

The World Health Organization (WHO) calculates 4.2 million deaths, but has underestimated the impact on cardiovascular disease, recent research has shown.

  • Liverpool mayor fears ‘farcical’ scenes if Premier League resumes

The mayor of Liverpool fears restarting the Premier League could lead to the “farcical” situation of fans congregating in large groups outside Anfield despite the Coronavirus crisis.

When the Premier League was postponed on March 13, runaway leaders Liverpool were just two wins from clinching the title.

Premier League chiefs still hope to complete the season but their “Project Restart” plan has come under fire from current and former players, who think it is too soon to resume while the virus is still a major problem.

Matches would be played behind closed doors but Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson said he did not believe that would be enough to stop fans from gathering.

He highlighted the potential issue of fans ignoring social-distancing guidelines to celebrate Liverpool’s first English title in 30 years.

“Even if it was behind closed doors, there would be many thousands of people who would turn up outside Anfield,” Anderson told BBC Sport on Thursday.

“There’s not many people who would respect what we were saying and stay away from the ground. A lot of people would come to celebrate so I think it’s a non-starter.”

There have been reports that the remaining 92 Premier League fixtures could be staged at approved neutral venues that are well-positioned to limit the virus spread.

But Anderson is concerned that Anfield would act as a magnet for supporters when Liverpool matches were played, even if the team were elsewhere.

“Even then, I guess that a lot of people would turn up outside Anfield to celebrate and I understand the police’s concerns around that, so there’s a real difficulty here for us,” he said.

“I think it would be really difficult for the police to keep people apart and maintain social distancing if they were going to celebrate outside Anfield. It would be farcical.”

Anderson added: “I think the best thing to do is to actually end the season.

“It isn’t just about Liverpool — they’ve clearly won the league — they deserve it, they should be crowned league champions.

“The bottom line is, though, this is about health and safety and people’s lives.”

  • Bodies of Salugu riot victims released to families after two years

The West Gonja Catholic Hospital in the West Gonja Municipal Assembly of the Savannah Region has finally released bodies of victims in the Salugu conflict to family members for burial.

A total accrued mortuary bill of GHC58,280.00 (GHC29,140 per body) was waived by the hospital paving way for relatives to have access to the bodies.

The bodies were officially released to the families on April 27, 2020, in the full witness of the police.

Officials from the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council were also supposed to witness the handing over of the bodies, but couldn’t turn up.

The deceased identified as John Bakari, 45, and 91-year old woman, Kala Adima were killed two years ago in a conflict between Gonjas’ and Tampulmas’ at Salugu in the Banawa Electoral Area in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

Some 35 houses were also identified to be burnt in the process rendering many residents homeless.

The two bodies were deposited at the mortuary on 14th January 2018, by police officers under the Regional Police Command of the Northern Region.

Issues of mortuary bills and uncompleted forensic investigation into the conflict were identified as possible reasons for the delay in burying the bodies.

The Normalisation Committee in consultation with the boards and CEO of the hospital agreed to waive the bills on humanitarian grounds after it became difficult for the accrued bills to be cleared.

At a short ceremony to hand over the bodies, the Chairman of the Normalisation Committee who is the acting Administrator of the hospital, Rev. Fr.Lazarus Annyereh, expressed commiserations to the families on behalf of the entire management and staff of the hospital.

He said the hospital as a corporate body has decided to waive the mortuary bills on humanitarian grounds since it would have been difficult for family members to clear the bills.

Servicing of the fridges among others are costs the hospital still has to bear, he noted.

According to him, it would be an additional burden on the already bereaved families to demand that they pay the mortuary bills among others.

He prayed for a peaceful reposed of the souls stating that, “as you go to bury these bodies, let’s not bring about any barbaric act. But that peace would prevail. The more we pray for them, the better their souls rest in peace”.

The former Assembly Man for Banawa Electoral Area, Mr Abudu Zakaria, who spoke on behalf of the families expressed appreciation to the hospital for the kind gesture.

He wondered how they would have paid the accrued mortuary bills.

The conflict he noted, has no better prize for humanity except agony, admonishing the factions to keep the peace in the area. Assuming entrenched positions in his view, is not the way to go.

Also present were other members of the Normalisation Committee of the hospital, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital; Dr Vitalis Saadaare, current Assemblyman for Banawa Electoral Area; Mr.Salifu among other family members of the deceased and representative of the Regional Police Commander; Mr.SS Gbeve.

  • Italy PM battles local leaders over lockdown

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte Thursday criticised regional chiefs for defying the government and lifting lockdown measures early, saying it risked undoing efforts to prevent a second Coronavirus wave.

He also rebutted opposition accusations that he was robbing Italians of their constitutional rights.

“Initiatives involving less restrictive measures are contrary to national rules and are therefore to all intents and purposes illegitimate,” Conte told parliament.

Regions south of Rome have suffered relatively few deaths from COVID-19 and local officials have been among the most vocal opponents of the two-month shutdown.

Calabria in the south allowed bars and restaurants with outside tables to open to the public on Thursday.

But areas of the north have also begun to open up.

Veneto region, which was among the first to be hit by the virus but has suffered far fewer deaths than neighbouring Lombardy, lifted a range of restrictions including on takeaways, pizzerias and some shops on Monday.

“We cannot allow the efforts made to be in vain because of rashness at this delicate stage. Moving from the policy of ‘let’s close everything’ to ‘let’s reopen everything’, would risk irreversibly compromising these efforts,” Conte said.

While some businesses have been allowed to reopen, the lockdown will not begin to be lifted nationwide until May 4 and even then it will happen gradually over a series of weeks.

    ‘Freedom’

Conte said officials would carry out some 150,000 tests in May to see how many people were developing antibodies to fight the virus. An app to trace contacts between potentially infected people would be voluntary, he said.

Evidence of a rise in infections could lead to restrictive measures being reintroduced locally.

The virus reproduction number (R0) in Italy was currently between 0.5 and 0.7 — meaning 10 virus sufferers infect between five and seven other people. Should it rise again to 1.0, intensive care units would once again be overwhelmed, he said.

Conte’s speech to the lower house was delayed after opposition members complained that the prime minister was not wearing a mask.

The League party, whose members took off their own obligatory masks, forcing the speaker to temporarily suspend the session, spent Wednesday night occupying both chambers of parliament.

The far-right party’s head Matteo Salvini has accused Conte of extending the lockdown because it was the easy option and stripping Italians of their fundamental freedoms.

He has said his party was deliberating whether to join grassroots protests called for Saturday.

Conte said the accusations were “profoundly unjust” and the saving of lives was a “primary good” that trumped other rights.

His lockdown may be unpopular but it was not an electoral programme designed to please anyone, he said.

  • French rugby agrees to cancel season

French rugby authorities and club presidents reached agreement Thursday to cancel the 2019-2020 season and concentrate on ensuring the 2020-2021 campaign starts in September.

The season was halted in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision to end the season was made with the LNR and the presidents of the clubs in the top-flight Top 14 and second tier Pro D2 divisions.

It still needs to be rubberstamped by the league’s steering committee at a date still to be arranged.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced this week that professional sport could not take place until September in France, where over 25,000 people have died from Coronavirus.

The league said that after discussions with the presidents of Top 14 and Pro D2 clubs it had abandoned plans to hold a final phase of matches at the end of August.

“We propose to declare that this 2019-2020 season is at an end and focus on organising the launch of the 2020-2021 editions of the two championships from September 2020,” the LNR added in a statement.

It now looks likely the season will end without a champion being declared and without relegation or promotion.

Bordeaux-Begles were eight points clear in the Top 14 standings with nine games left to play. Well-financed Paris-based club Stade Francais were bottom.

The league hopes to start their new season on September 5.

Clubs must present plans to the sports ministry about what health precautions they will take for players.

  • Coronavirus: New York funeral home puts corpses in lorries

Dozens of bodies have been found stored in moving lorries in New York, authorities say, after passersby complained of the smell.

The Andrew T Cleckley Funeral Home in Brooklyn had rented trucks and put about 50 corpses inside with ice.

One official quoted anonymously in the New York Times said the home’s freezer had stopped working.

Police were called to the scene and sealed off the area. A refrigerated truck later arrived.

Workers in protective suits were later seen moving bodies.

It is unclear if these were victims of the coronavirus. But officials and funeral homes have struggled to cope with the huge numbers of dead in New York, the worst-affected state in the US.

More than 18,000 people have died in New York City alone, according to Johns Hopkins University data. As a whole, the US has more than one million confirmed cases of coronavirus, more than any other country.

“They had dead bodies in the vans and trucks,” the owner of the building next door told the New York Times. “They were on top of each other in body bags… all of [the vehicles] were packed.”

Eric Adams, the Borough President of Brooklyn, went to the scene after the funeral home complaint emerged.

“While this situation is under investigation, we should not have what we have right now, with trucks lining the streets filled with bodies,” he later told the New York Daily News.

Mr Adams said they were alerted by “people who walked by who saw some leakage and detected an odour coming from a truck.”

By law, funeral directors must keep bodies in safe conditions that prevent infection before they are buried or cremated. The home has since been cited by health officials.

In separate news, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio apologized after criticizing a gathering at a Jewish funeral – comments some said were anti-Semitic.

Mourners had gathered in large numbers to mourn the passing of a rabbi in Williamsburg.

“If in my passion and in my emotion I said something that was hurtful, I’m sorry about that,” Mr de Blasio said.

“I have no regrets about calling out this danger and saying we’re going to deal with it very, very aggressively.”

  • Coronavirus: Boris Johnson to update UK on ‘steps to defeat’ the disease

Boris Johnson has chaired a cabinet meeting and will later lead the daily coronavirus briefing for the first time since his return to work.

No 10 said the PM, whose fiancee gave birth on Wednesday, will update the UK on the “fight against this disease and the steps we are taking to defeat it”.

But political editor Laura Kuenssberg said he was unlikely to give “chapter and verse” on lifting the restrictions.

No 10 also faces the deadline for its target of 100,000 daily virus tests.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock pledged to reach the goal by the end of April. The latest figures show it reached just over 52,000 coronavirus tests on Tuesday.

A scientist advising the government on testing, Prof John Newton, said he is “pretty confident” the government will hit the target but warned there will be a lag in the data.

He said it would not be clear whether the target had been reached until the end of the week.

However, Justice Minister Robert Buckland admitted the target might not be met by the end of April.

The government’s chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance and chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty will appear alongside the prime minister at Thursday’s briefing.

Mr. Johnson, who has just recovered from Covid-19, returned to work in Downing Street this week but missed Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday following the birth of his son with his fiancee Carrie Symonds.

  • Rishi Kapoor: Bollywood’s romantic hero dies at 67

Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor, famed for his romantic roles, has died of cancer aged 67.

He was part of the Kapoor acting dynasty which has long dominated Bollywood, the Hindi film industry.

The actor made a huge splash in 1973 with his first lead role in Bobby – a teenage love story.

He played the romantic lead in dozens of films for over two decades, after which he made a successful transition to character roles.

Rishi Kapoor debuted as a child actor in 1970 in his father Raj Kapoor’s film, Mera Naam Joker.

Several of his films in the 1980s and 90s – Khel Khel Mein, Karz and Chandni – became massive box office hits.

He was a skilful dancer and some of his films had songs that are massively popular even today.

Kapoor made a successful on-screen pair with actress Neetu Singh. In one of Bollywood’s most enduring love stories, they took that romance off-screen as well when they got married in 1980.

Their son, Ranbir Kapoor, is a successful Bollywood star in his own right.

Rishi Kapoor also worked in several multi-starrers with Amitabh Bachchan and his uncle Shashi Kapoor.

He had a second coming in this decade, doing character roles and appearing in some interesting cameos in small films.

One generation of the Kapoor family was born in the city of Peshawar in Pakistan. The family migrated to India after the partition in 1947.

In 1990, Rishi Kapoor visited a residential building in Peshawar called Kapoor Haveli where his grandfather, Prithviraj and his father Raj Kapoor, were born.

The news he had lost his battle with cancer came a day after the death of Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan.

Kapoor was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018 and returned to India last September after a year-long course of treatment in New York.

He was taken to hospital on Wednesday morning after he complained of breathing difficulties, his brother Randhir Kapoor told the Press Trust of India.

The actor’s family confirmed his death in a message saying his life had ended peacefully.

“The doctors and medical staff at the hospital said he kept them entertained to the last. He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents. Family, friends, food and films remained his focus and everyone who met him during this time was amazed at how he did not let his illness get the better of him.

“He was grateful for the love of his fans that poured in from the world over. In his passing, they would all understand that he would like to be remembered with a smile and not with tears.”

The family also appealed to his fans and friends to follow restrictions around gathering in public because of the lockdown over coronavirus and respect the laws that are in force.

Meanwhile, tributes have been pouring in for Kapoor from his fellow Bollywood actors and politicians on social media.

Amitabh Bachchan who worked in several hit films with Kapoor tweeted: “He’s GONE .. ! Rishi Kapoor .. gone .. just passed away .. I am destroyed !”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as “multifaceted, endearing and lively” and “a powerhouse of talent”.

“I will always recall our interactions, even on social media. He was passionate about films and India’s progress. Anguished by his demise,” he tweeted.

Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi also tweeted about his death: “This is a terrible week for Indian cinema, with the passing of another legend, actor Rishi Kapoor. A wonderful actor, with a huge fan following across generations, he will be greatly missed.”

News of his death has also seen an outpouring of sadness on social media in Pakistan.

Former fast bowler Waqar Younis was among those who tweeted their condolences.

  • Coronavirus kills more than 6,000 in Iran

The death toll in Iran from the coronavirus surged to 6,028 as 71 new deaths were reported, state media said on Thursday.

A total of 983 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total infections to 94,640, Iran’s state broadcaster reported, citing a statement by the Health Ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour.

Jahanpour said 75,103 people have recovered so far and been discharged from hospitals, while 2,976 patients are in critical condition.

A total of 463,295 tests have been conducted in the country, he added.

In Iran, one of the Middle Eastern countries hardest hit by the pandemic, COVID-19 was first detected in the city of Qom on Feb. 19, and then spread throughout the country.

The government refrained from imposing a total lockdown as seen in many other countries, but extended closure of educational institutions and banned cultural, religious, and sports gatherings.

Authorities, meanwhile, have in phases since April 11 allowed the reopening of businesses which have been closed as part of measures to contain the spread of the virus. The state also plans to reopen mosques in parts of the country that have been consistently free of the virus.

After originating in China last December, the coronavirus has spread to at least 185 countries and regions. Europe and the US are currently the worst-hit regions.

The pandemic has killed nearly 228,000 people, with total infections exceeding 3.2 million, while more than 983,500 have recovered so far, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University in the US.

  • Storage space for excess crude oil running out

More on reports that the global demand for energy is set to plummet by a record amount this year, according to a forecast from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The group has warned that storage space for excess crude oil is likely to run out in the coming weeks.

“We may well see around mid-June the global storage capacity [will] be full,” executive director Fatih Birol told Reuters news agency. He said the problem was worst in North America.

Oil firms have resorted to renting tankers to store the surplus supply and that forced the price of US oil into negative territory for the first time in history earlier this month.

But prices have begun to rebound since then.

  • I want to win a title with Tottenham before I die – Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that he is dreaming of retracing his steps back to Tottenham one day, revealing that he hopes to return and win a trophy that eluded him during his time in charge.

Pochettino transformed Spurs into one of the top sides in England during his five years with the team, leading them to the brink of silverware but never getting over the final hurdle.

Tottenham once finished second and twice finished third in the Premier League under Pochettino’s stewardship, and also reached the 2018-19 Champions League final in which the Lilywhites fell to current title holders Liverpool.

But Pochettino’s reign in north London turned sour in the 2019-20 season and the Argentine was sacked in November, with Jose Mourinho coming in as his replacement.

Pochettino has been out of management since then but has been linked with several jobs across Europe, most recently at Newcastle as the Magpies near a takeover by a Saudi Arabian consortium.

But the 48-year-old has revealed that he still carries a fondness for Tottenham and hopes one day to return and finish the work he started.

“It was an amazing journey that finished in the way that, of course, no one wants. But deeper in my chest, my soul, my heart – I am sure that we will cross [paths] again,” Pochettino said on BT Sport.

“From the day that I left the club, my dream is to be back and to try to finish the work that we didn’t finish.

“We were so close to winning the right trophies, the Premier League and the Champions League. But we stopped and, of course, I am looking forward to moving on. I am so motivated for the next project.

“But, deep inside, I would like to be back one day because the club is special. The fans are so special.”

Though Pochettino knows that a return to Spurs isn’t likely to happen for a while, he is hoping to eventually repay the support he received from fans in north London.

“Maybe in five years, maybe in 10 years, and now I’m going to conspire with the universe and to throw out the idea that before I die, I want to manage Tottenham again and try if possible to win one title,” Pochettino said, “because I want to feel what it means to win one title with Tottenham.

“The fans are amazing and the love we received was amazing and that [would be] a good opportunity to pay back all the love they showed us from day one.”

  • Andrew Cole: Ex-Manchester United & Newcastle striker says ‘no day comes easy’

Former Manchester United, Newcastle and England striker Andrew Cole has opened up about his “daily grind” in shielding from the coronavirus pandemic.

Cole is one of over a million people more vulnerable to the virus after having a kidney transplant in 2017.

The 48-year-old told BBC Radio 5 Live that “no day comes easy” as he continues to self-isolate alone.

“It’s a difficult period but it’s just a case of getting your head down and doing what you can,” he said.

“You don’t know how you’re going to feel, and there are good days and bad days.

“It’s a total lack of energy and you question yourself on what you did the day before, but you cannot come up with an answer because you did nothing yesterday to make you feel like you do today.

“Mentally, that is when it starts to get to you a bit.”

Cole, who won 15 England caps, also played for Arsenal, Fulham, Bristol City, Blackburn, Manchester City, Portsmouth, Birmingham, Sunderland, Burnley and Nottingham Forest in a 19-year career.

He remains the third highest scorer in Premier League history with 187 goals, winning five league titles, two FA Cups and the 1999 Champions League with Manchester United, and a League Cup with Blackburn.

Cole suffered kidney failure in 2015 after contracting an airborne virus, and now says a lack of human interaction is one of the “toughest challenges”.

“The first couple of weeks were not bad but the last month or so has been really difficult due to the fact you’re not allowed to go out,” he added.

“You can talk on the phone or on Zoom, but ultimately, the difficult part has been not being able to interact with people.

“I’ve been by myself and I think we will all spend more times with friends and family after this because you just don’t know what’s going to happen in the world nowadays.”

The former striker has set up the Andy Cole Fund to raise money for kidney research, but he says raising awareness of the illness is more important than the funds.

“People do not understand how difficult an illness this is,” he said.

“People ask me if I’m OK because I look really well, but I try and explain to them that I’m never going to be OK.

“However you look on the outside is not how you feel on the inside.”

  • EC must brief Parliament on preparations for 2020 elections Haruna Iddrisu

The Minority in Parliament wants the Electoral Commission (EC) to brief Parliament on its preparedness and readiness for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, the EC must present their road map to MPs as the country battles with Covid-19.

“The Constitution requires that presidential and parliamentary elections be held this year even as we struggle with COVID. The independent Electoral Commission created under Article 45 of this constitution owes this country and Members of Parliament an explanation.

“They have to be summoned to give us their road map as to their preparedness. They need to appraise this House on their level of preparedness for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary election. If we cannot get them to brief the Committee, on the whole, they have to come to the Special Budget Committee,” Mr. Iddrisu said.

    Suspension of new register compilation

The EC was forced to suspend indefinitely plans to compile a new voters register which was scheduled to begin on April 18, due to COVID-19.

The EC had said it is collaborating with health experts to decide on a more favourable date depending on the prevalence rate of the Novel Coronavirus.

    Alleged EC workshop

Just recently, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) filed a complaint at the Airport Police Command over an alleged meeting held by the EC at the City Escape Hotel in Accra.

The EC had announced a national planning meeting and key trainers training workshop to prepare and plan for the upcoming voter registration exercise ahead of the 2020 general election

The programme was scheduled to take place from 24th to 29th April 2020 at the City Escape Hotel, Prampram, in the Greater Accra Region.

But the Member of Parliament for  Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, secured an injunction to stop the workshop from being held.

The injunction was meant to be in place from April 24, 2020, to April 27, 2020.

The party filed the complaint about suspicions that the said meeting was a conference by the EC which the court stopped from taking place.

  • Tottenham: Harry Kane has recovered from hamstring injury, says Jose Mourinho

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has recovered from his hamstring injury, says Spurs manager Jose Mourinho.

Kane had surgery to resolve the problem on 1 January and is fit again, along with team-mates Moussa Sissoko and Steven Bergwijn.

“It is one thing not to be injured, it’s another thing to be ready to play football,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“For them it is many, many, many weeks of injury and when the injuries were almost at an end, we stopped training.”

The Premier League has been suspended since 13 March because of the coronavirus pandemic but it is hoped there will be a return to action on 8 June, which would require full training to begin by 18 May.

Tottenham have made a limited number of pitches available for the first-team squad to use for individual training sessions, but Mourinho is unsure whether Kane, midfielder Sissoko and winger Bergwijn will be ready for any resumption.

“I don’t know, they don’t know, we have to wait for the official and right permission for the players to train again in groups to see if they can come back to a normal competition level,” said the Portuguese.

“So if we play this season, the remaining nine matches, it would be good for every one of us, it would be good for football, it would be good for the Premier League if players of that quality can play the remaining matches.”

Top-flight clubs will meet on Friday to discuss options for the restart, with any restart planned to be spectator free.

“If we play football behind closed doors I’d like to think that football is never behind closed doors,” added Mourinho.

“With cameras, it means that millions and millions are watching. So if one day we walk into this empty stadium, it will not be empty, not at all.”

  • COPEC urges government to cushion oil and gas companies following lockdown

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has called on the state to also cushion Oil and Gas Companies following the challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, COPEC said a lot of them “are reeling heavily under the harsh effects of our 3 weeks lockdown and subsequent low volumes and revenues which can increase job losses and redundancy within the country.”

The chamber also called on the National Petroleum Agency (NPA) to also reduce the burden of license renewal fees charged to these companies “to enable them to adjust to the vagaries of the Coronavirus outbreak on their businesses.”

This is to ensure “they keep fuel prices lower for Ghanaians without the tendency to increase or collect their full margins which can only lead to increases in pump prices.”

COPEC finally called for an increased moratorium of the next six months for Oil Companies to file returns instead of the current moratorium which runs to July.

It argued that “sales volumes across the board have reduced significantly and any attempts to enforce the earlier 21 or 45-day collections could only mean going to the banks to borrow which eventually places undue pressures on them to engage in all manner of games to survive.”

    Find below the full statement

RESOLVE THE GCNET/UNIPASS ISSUE IMMEDIATELY TO CURTAIL ANY FUEL SHORTAGES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

The ongoing challenges in respect of revenue settlement following from a decision to migrate onto a new platform (UNIPASS) from the existing GCNet platform is leading to a lot of challenges with petroleum liftings across depots in the country.

Oil Marketing Companies ( OMCs ) and the Liquified Petroleum Gas Marketing Companies ( LPGMCs ) that had orders for supply of fuel to various outlets could not load a single litre of fuel all day on Wednesday the 29th of April due to discrepancies in the migration onto the new customs system ( UNIPASS ) at the depots.

A communique issued earlier yesterday from the NPA indicating a swift response to resolve the issue to enable the liftings seemed not to have yielded as most Oil Marketing Companies and the LPGMCs had to make alternative arrangements to accommodate their drivers who had been dispatched to load products from the depots across the country.

This situation if left unresolved within the next 24 hours could and will certainly lead to serious fuel shortages across the country.

One would expect that the new system would have been rolled out gradually side by side with the old system in order to help in facilitating a gradual phasing out of the existing system ( GCNet ) but the seeming haste in abandoning the old system whiles the new system ( UNIPASS) is not fully ready and integrated is clearly leading to discrepancies being witnessed and we wish for a speedy resolution to forestall any possible shortages across the country.

Our attention has further been drawn to the cutting of staff numbers by some of our Oil Companies due to the adverse effects of Coronavirus on volumes and revenues through a lot of others have refused to lay off.

In light of the above, we call on the State to ensure the various Oil and Gas Companies are not left out in the announced SME support as a lot are reeling heavily under the harsh effects of our 3 weeks lockdown and subsequent low volumes and revenues which can increase job losses and redundancy within the country.

We further call on the Regulator of the downstream ( NPA ) to also work out a mechanism to ease down on the heavy license renewal fees charged to these companies to enable them to adjust to the vagaries of the Coronavirus outbreak on their businesses with the view to ensuring they keep fuel prices lower for Ghanaians without the tendency to increase or collect their full margins which can only lead to increases in pump prices.

Finally, we will like to reiterate an earlier call on the Ghana Revenue Authority to give a moratorium for the next 6 months to Oil Companies instead of the current one spanning up to end of July to file their returns later than the current 45 days since sales volumes across the board has reduced significantly and any attempts to enforce the earlier 21 or 45-day collections could only mean going to the banks to borrow which eventually places undue pressures on them to engage in all manner of games to survive.

First, to investigate all the circumstances surrounding Asante Kotoko Sporting Club transactions with Tunisian Club Esperance which resulted in the FIFA ruling and the subsequent transfer of another Asante Kotoko player to the club.

And also, to investigate the failure of Asante Kotoko SC to meet its regulatory obligations to the Premier League licence.

  • ‘Donate your PPE to frontliners; dead people dont vote’ Apaak to EC

The Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr Clement Apaak, has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to donate the PPE given to it to health workers to carry out their frontline duties in the fight against COVID-19.

He said the health professionals need the PPE more than the EC.

Dr Apaak noted in a statement that PPE have been donated to the EC to enable the elections management body prepare for its voter registration exercise ahead of the 2020 polls.

“Folks, it’s my candid view that the Electoral Commission of Ghana should donate its PPE to frontline health workers.

“Despite government claims, healthcare professionals are crying for PPE. So far, we have a record of 13 medical doctors testing positive for the coronavirus. Only God knows how many more could be infected in their line of duty, as they relentlessly lead as Generals in the war against COVID-19 without adequate PPE?

“Logically, as the number of cases goes up and across several regions of Ghana, more healthcare professionals would be exposed without PPE. So, at a time when our nation has recorded over 1,600 cases, should the EC, like many other institutions/organisations and persons, public and private, not be supporting the fight against COVID-19 with the PPE it has procured?

“I wish no harm befalls anyone, but should an officer of the EC become infected, who will attend to him/her, a needless newly-compiled voter register or frontline medical personnel?

“EC, donate your PPE to a medical facility, it’s the moral and right thing to do in this COVID-19 war. Remember that dead people don’t vote, and dead people can’t compile a new voter register. Let’s win the COVID-19 war first,” his statement said.

  • Ghanaian Times: COVID-19 and innovation: The new normal

If for nothing at all, one thing that the deadly coronavirus disease has brought the world is innovation and discoveries.

Ever since the deadly respiratory disease code named Covid-19, was diagnosed, Ghana and indeed Africa has been innovative to help citizens navigate around the effects of the virus.

Among some of the innovations here in Ghana include the invention of solar powered handwashing machine, locally produced nose masks and hand sanitiser which either too were not considered lucrative.

Before the disease caused international travels to be brought to a halt, our leaders did not hold virtual meetings to discuss issues of importance to their respective countries and the continent as a whole.

That however, has become the order of the day as ECOWAS leaders last Thursday met online to discuss how to battle the virus.

Schools, on the other hand did not have online studies as students were required to be physically present on their various campuses to have their studies.

In all the above innovations, Ghana still looked out for innovations that would be most handy in the fight against the virus which has claimed over 200,000 lives globally.

It is in this regard that the Ghanaian Times joins the rest of the country to congratulate the Kwame Nkrumah University of Technology and Incas Diagnostic for inventing the optimised Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kit to support the testing regime in Ghana.

Before the invention of the RTD, the country relied on the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) which detects parts of the viral genome early in infection, at least 48 hours after testing; potentially delaying contact tracing and other efforts.

The PCR tests are unable to identify people who have been infected (symptomatic or asymptomatic) and recovered.

“However, KNUST/Incas RDT detects asymptomatic cases, enables decentralised testing to be done anywhere without requiring any equipment,” this paper quoted a statement issued by the KNUST on Wednesday.

Interesting about the RDT is that it requires little technical training for those performing the test to be able to do so within 20 minutes and results in a shorter time to enable decision making in real time.

This is a big plus for Ghanaian scientists and should spur us on in our determination to overcome the virus.

Covid-19 may be having a devastating effect on industries, social life and personal development but it has brought out of us an outpouring of creation in all areas of human life.

Necessity, as they say, is the mother of invention. We salute the scientists at the KNUST and Incas for coming up with the RDT to support the country in ramping up the tests.

As President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo told his colleagues in that virtual ECOWAS meeting, “it is very very important that we tailor a specific Ghanaian and African response to the handling of this pandemic and not necessarily copy blindly the methods that are being adopted by countries to the north of us and elsewhere.”

  • Ligue 1 cancellation disappointing but important – Majeed Waris

Strasbourg striker Abdul Majeed Waris has expressed his disappointment at the cancellation of Ligue 1 but added that it was the right thing to do.

The competition was officially cancelled on Tuesday due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and they will now look forward to the following season.

In an interview with Adom TV, the Ghanaian revealed how he felt about the decision.

“It is very disappointing to be honest [that they cancelled the league] because it has been decided that we will not continue the season but if you look at the other aspects, I believe that it is an important thing [that they did it] because if you look at what has happened abroad, people are losing their loved ones and families so it has destroyed everything. If you look at the safety side, I think it is the right thing.”

  • Akufo-Addo’s 88 new hospitals in a year not feasible – Allotey Jacobs

Social Commentator, Bernard Allotey Jacobs, says even though the 88 district hospitals yet to be constructed by the ruling government is commendable, he strongly believes that it cannot be done in a year.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced plans to construct 88 new district hospitals and six new regional hospitals within a year.

In his eighth address to the nation on the coronavirus pandemic, he indicated that “there are 88 districts in our country without district hospitals; we have six new regions without regional hospitals; we do not have five infectious disease control centres dotted across the country, and we do not have enough testing and isolation centres for diseases like COVD-19. We must do something urgently about this”

While this move has been highly commended due to the infrastructure deficit in the health sector, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) thinks it is an attempt to solicit for votes from Ghanaians and secure a second term for the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

The former Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show, ‘Kokrokoo’, averred that “they cannot construct the 88 within one year; just like how we promised to construct 200 E-blocks and we couldn’t complete all; that’s what happens…”

Giving reasons for his remarks, he said politicians often start projects hoping to complete during their tenure; however, when they leave office without completing them, they are often abandoned by the successors.

“Some may say it’s politics…but often if you are not given a second chance, your projects are truncated unless you have a sympathetic leader; someone who is interested in the wellbeing of Ghanaians and this country,” he added.

Meanwhile, Allotey Jacobs says it’s early days yet to criticize President Akufo-Addo over the yet to be constructed health facilities.

  • Coronavirus: Gaps in lockdown led to spread in other regions – Former Noguchi Director

Professor Kojo Ansah Koram, a former Director General at the Noguchi Memorial Research Institute has stated that the spread of COVID-19 to other parts of the country was due to some gaps in our lockdown procedures.

The renowned epidemiologist posited that the two days that was given to people in the lockdown areas led to mass fleeing to other regions.

According to him, most of the people that left the lockdown cities of Accra and Kumasi had the virus which they have spread to other regions.

Speaking at a World Health Organisation (WHO) media briefing in Accra, Prof. Koram said: For the cases around the country, it’s obvious that it’s from their contacts with those from Accra and Kumasi.”

“Because at the beginning when the decision was taken to lockdown Accra and Kumasi some grace period was given and within that grace period, a few people left Accra and it happens that those who left where carrying the virus and their samples have been brought in which confirmed it”, he said.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s COVID-19 cases have increased to 2,074.

The number of recovered persons has also gone up from 188 to 212. This was disclosed by the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

  • Listen to ‘elderly wisdom’ – Allotey Jacobs to NDC

Social Commentator and former NDC Central Regional Chairman, Allotey Jacobs has jabbed some young members and activists in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who, to him, have suddenly grown wings in the party.

Stopping short of pinpointing exactly who those characters are, Allotey Jacobs bemoaned the conduct of some of these young generation in politics, asking them to lift the political discourse.

He was contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo” Morning Show on Wednesday, April 29, 2020.

Earlier on, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, speaking on the same platform, had treated with disdain President Akufo-Addo’s promise to construct 88 district and 6 Regional hospitals in the country.

To him, the President is only taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to solicit votes from Ghanaians in order to win the 2020 elections.

He doubted the President’s commitment to the project saying ”this promise made by President Akufo-Addo is a grand deception calculated for votes and not intended to be kept. President Akufo-Addo has realized that he has failed Ghanaians. He couldn’t utilize the power given him about four years now for development especially in the health sector regarding the health of Ghanaians. He has failed Ghanaians woefully but he has realized this year is an election year and is more concerned about deceiving the people to win their votes. The first point I want to make and make very forcefully is this promise is an absolute lie…The President doesn’t have any good intention to put it into good use”.

Sammy Gyamfi made further claims that the Akufo-Addo government had abandoned hospital projects by erstwhile Mahama administration citing the Bank of Ghana hospital which, to him, was established by former President John Dramani Mahama; an assertion that was repudiated by seasoned journalist Abdul Malik Kweku Baako who was also on the panel.

Sammy Gyamfi and Kweku Baako entered into a heated debate over ownership of the Bank of Ghana hospital.

Taking his turn to address issues on the programme, Allotey Jacobs reminded the young generation that he has been in their position before saying ”when we were young, we behaved as children but now we have grown”.

He therefore advised young politicians to listen to wisdom from their elders because having an adamant posture to corrections won’t help them in their political journey.

”We are in a political age of maturity. So, we should look at Ghana first when issues are raised but with the young people today, I don’t know whether it is personality cult, personality worship; so when you express your view about this COVID-19, then it means you either supporting this or against this. So, they have to get on your nerves…When you explain yourself, it appears the young ones who have come up, I don’t know the force pushing them but they will not listen to wisdom or reasoning…This country has to move forward”, he exclaimed.

  • Coronavirus: Isolation Center to be sited at Odupong Ofaakor get push back from locals

Chiefs and elders of Odupong-Ofaakor in the central region are protesting against the use of the Odupong Senior High School as an isolation center for COVID-19 patients.

According to them, the Municipal Chief Executive and the Municipal Director of Education failed to dialogue with the traditional authorities before taking the decision.

Speaking to local radio station, Pink FM, Spokesperson for the Ofaakor Traditional Council, Dr Kofi Akotuah Obeng who doubles as the Board Chairman of the school questioned why the assembly failed to engage the traditional authorities on such a critical matter.

He suggested, that, the government stick to the use of the Pentecost Convention Center.

Some indigenes of the town who besieged the premises of the school amidst the chanting of war songs expressed their resolve to kick against any move to use the school.

They fear should the current decision be made to stand, a patient could possibly escape quarantine or isolation and spread the disease in the township
