  • Daimler sees profits at Mercedes-Benz Cars rising in 2020

Daimler (DAIGn.DE) said it expected the operating profit of its Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans division to be above the prior-year level, even as the corona pandemic forced the Stuttgart-based car and trucks maker to abandon its outlook earlier this month.

First-quarter earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) was 617 million euros ($669.45 million), down from 2.8 billion euros in the year-earlier period, of which 510 million euros came from the Mercedes-Benz cars unit.

Daimler expects group revenue and EBIT to be below 2019 levels but given substantial one-off charges in the year-earlier period, the Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans division is now seen delivering EBIT above prior-year, the company said.

Last week Daimler (DAIGn.DE) pre-released preliminary results, showing a plunge of nearly 70% in first-quarter operating profit and warned that the cash flow it uses to pay dividends would fall this year.

  • Slumdog Millionaire and Life of Pi actor, Irrfan Khan dies

Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan, known internationally for roles in Slumdog Millionaire and Jurassic World, has died at the age of 53.

Khan died in a hospital in the western city of Mumbai, his agency said.

In 2018, the actor posted on Twitter to say that he was diagnosed with an endocrine tumour, a rare illness affecting cells that release hormones into the bloodstream.

He later underwent treatment in a London hospital.

Two months after he went public with his diagnosis, he wrote an open letter about his experience with the cancer treatment, reflecting on the “intensity” of his pain and the “uncertainty” of life.

It drew a massive outpouring of support from his fans around the world.

The statement released by his PR company confirming his death said, “surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about, he left for heaven abode, leaving behind truly a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace”.

He had been admitted to hospital with a colon infection.

Bollywood stars and politicians have rushed to pay tribute to him on social media.

“An incredible talent… a gracious colleague… a prolific contributor to the World of Cinema… left us too soon… creating a huge vacuum,” superstar actor Amitabh Bachchan who worked with him in Piku tweeted.

Actor Raveena Tandon tweeted that he was a “fantastic co-star, an actor par excellence, and a beautiful human being”.

The top four trends on Twitter in India are all relating to his death, with many paying tribute to his talent.

Khan was known for his nuanced and understated performances, with many calling him one of India’s most talented actors.

In 2013, he won India’s National Film Award for his leading role in Paan Singh Tomar, a biopic about a top athlete who becomes a bandit.

He also acted in several Bollywood hits, including Lunchbox, Piku, and Hindi Medium. His latest, Angrezi Medium, was released just last month.

His international breakthrough came in the British-Indian film The Warrior by director Asif Kapadia which won a Bafta.

It was also shortlisted for the UK’s official entry for the Academy Awards but had to be dropped on the technicality that Hindi was not a language indigenous to Britain.

The critical success of the movie launched his film career and for the next two decades he would make as many as five or six movies a year.

He kept in touch with Mira Nair – who had spotted his talent at drama school but cut him from Salaam Bombay. They would go on to make The Namesake in 2006 and New York, I Love You in 2010.

Michael Winterbottom cast him as a Pakistani police captain in A Mighty Heart and Wes Anderson wrote a small role for him in The Darjeeling Limited – just so he could work with him.

  • US Congress abandons return to Washington after lawmakers revolt

The US House of Representatives will not reconvene next week following a revolt from lawmakers who complained that it was too soon to return.

On Monday, members were told to return to the Democratic-controlled chamber.

However, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said on Tuesday the plan was scrapped after consulting the House doctor.

The Republican-controlled Senate still plans to return on 4 May.

“We made a judgement that we will not come back next week but that we hope to come back very soon,” Mr Hoyer said.

Washington DC remains under a stay-at-home order until 15 May. Officials say the infection rate is still climbing.

Confirmed coronavirus cases in Washington DC have passed 13,600 and 764 people have died.

Democrat leaders were faced with a backlash from members of their own party over the plans to return next week.

On a private call with House members, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a congresswoman from Florida, told party leaders the plan was “dangerous” and several complained that they had no way of managing childcare, according to the Politico US media outlet.

However, there is pressure to reconvene the chamber in order to pass key legislation amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The questions over how to reopen Congress for business are likely to renew calls for proxy sessions and remote voting, said BBC North America correspondent Anthony Zurcher. Currently, rules prevent members of Congress from voting remotely, though there are efforts to change.

  • Coronavirus: France mandates masks for schools and transport

France will make face masks compulsory on public transport and in secondary schools when it starts easing its coronavirus lockdown on 11 May, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has said.

Schools will resume classes gradually, starting with kindergartens and primary schools.

Middle schools in districts with milder outbreaks may follow from 18 May, and high schools at the end of the month.

Shops and markets will also reopen from 11 May, but not bars and restaurants.

Stores will have the right to ask shoppers to wear masks, and should ensure they remain a metre (3ft) apart, the prime minister said.

Face masks will also be compulsory in school for children aged over 11.

In a relief to many, the French will be able to go outside again without a certificate confirming their intentions, and public gatherings of up to 10 people will be allowed. Crèches will also reopen – but with a maximum of 10 children in each group.

France has suffered one of the highest Covid-19 death rates in Europe, along with the UK, Italy and Spain.

On Tuesday the number of people who have died with the virus rose by 367 to 23,660, the country’s health ministry said. Some 129,859 people have been infected.

Hospital admissions and the number of patients in intensive care have been falling, however, giving cause for cautious optimism.

Addressing parliament, Mr Philippe said the lockdown had saved an estimated 62,000 lives in France in a month, but that it was time to ease measures to avoid an economic collapse.

“We will have to learn to live with the virus,” he said, until a vaccine or effective treatment is available.

He summed up France’s priorities as “protect, test, isolate”.

Parliament was scheduled to vote on the government’s proposed measures after a debate. Only 75 of almost 600 French MPs were allowed into the chamber for reasons of social distancing, with others voting by proxy.

Will the lockdown definitely be lifted? Mr Philippe stressed that France must take strict precautions to avoid a second wave of coronavirus infections.

“The risk of a second wave, which would strike a weakened hospital fabric, which would impose a ‘re-confinement’, which would ruin the efforts and sacrifices made during these eight weeks, is a serious risk,” he said.

The lockdown will not be eased on 11 May if new cases don’t stay below 3,000 a day, he added.

France has seen about 2,162 new cases a day on average over the past two weeks.

The government has set a target to carry out at least 700,000 coronavirus tests per week from 11 May, the prime minister said, and will cover the cost of testing.

“Once a person has tested positive, we will begin to identify and test all those, symptomatic or not, who have had close contact with them. All these contact cases will be tested and will be asked to isolate themselves,” he said.

Mr Philippe said that where possible, people should keep working from home beyond 11 May

  • Coronavirus: Top NYC doctor takes her own life

A top New York City doctor who was on the front line of the US fight against coronavirus has taken her own life.

Dr Lorna Breen, who was medical director of the emergency department at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital in Manhattan, died of self-inflicted injuries on Sunday, police said.

The 49-year-old’s father, Dr Philip Breen, told the New York Times: “She tried to do her job and it killed her.”

New York accounts for 17,500 out of America’s coronavirus 56,000 deaths.

The elder Dr Breen said his daughter had had no history of mental illness. She died in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she had been staying with her family.

Lorna Breen herself had fallen ill with the coronavirus during the course of her work and returned to the job after about a week-and-a-half of recuperating, said her father.

The hospital had sent her home again, before her family “intervened” to bring her to Charlottesville, said her father.

He said that when they last spoke, his daughter had seemed “detached” and told him how Covid-19 patients were dying before they could even be removed from ambulances. Dozens of patients have succumbed to coronavirus at the 200-bed hospital in Manhattan.

“She was truly in the trenches on the front line,” her father told the Times.

“Make sure she’s praised as a hero. She’s a casualty just as much as anyone else who has died.”

According to the newspaper, Dr Lorna Breen was a devout Christian who was very close to her family. She was an avid skiier who also enjoyed salsa dancing. She volunteered once a week at a home for old people.

New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital said in a statement: “Dr Breen is a hero who brought the highest ideals of medicine to the challenging front lines of the emergency department.”

In a press release confirming her death, the Charlottesville Police Department also described Dr Breen as a “hero”.

The police department said that after a call for help on 26 April, Dr Breen was taken to a local hospital for treatment “where she later succumbed to self-inflicted injuries”.

Police chief RaShall Brackney said in a statement: “Frontline healthcare professionals and first responders are not immune to the mental or physical effects of the current pandemic.

“On a daily basis,” she added, “these professionals operate under the most stressful of circumstances, and the coronavirus has introduced additional stressors.”

New York state has recorded almost a third of the country’s nearly one million confirmed Covid-19 cases.

On Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said random antibody tests indicated that a quarter of New York City (24.7%) – America’s most populous city with 8.3 million people – had been infected with coronavirus.

  • Coronavirus: Putin admits PPE shortage as lockdown extended

Russian President Vladimir Putin has admitted that there is a shortage of protective kit for medics as the country battles the coronavirus.

This was despite a big increase in production and imports, he said.

Mr Putin warned that the peak of the coronavirus infection rate had not yet been reached in the country, and the population must remain vigilant.

Russia’s lockdown aimed at containing the spread of Covid-19 was extended until 11 May.

It has more than 93,000 coronavirus cases, with 867 recorded deaths.

What did Putin say? The president said there was still not enough protective equipment for health workers on the frontline of the crisis.

“Compared to before, [we’re producing] a lot. But compared what we need, it’s still not enough,” he said during a televised briefing.

“Despite increased production, imports – there’s a deficit of all sorts of things,” he added.

Medics have complained about working without proper protective clothing, especially in Russia’s regions.

Russia is now producing 100,000 protective suits for medics per day, up from 3,000 a day in March, he said. Production of masks has also increased more than 10 times, to 8.5 million per day in April.

Mr Putin said that while the government had managed to “slow the spread” of the epidemic, Russians would have to self-isolate for longer.

He said the lockdown would continue for two more weeks, though he instructed the government to draw up recommendations by 5 May for a gradual easing of restrictions.

“The deadly danger of the virus remains,” he said.

  • Maradona hopes ‘Hand of God’ can end pandemic

Argentine football legend Maradona says he hopes the “Hand of God” can beat the coronavirus pandemic after fate helped the club he coaches avoid relegation.

Maradona’s La Plata-based Gimnasia side were saved from dropping out of the Argentine top-flight after the league was restructured because of the pandemic.

The 59-year-old famously used his hand to score against England in the 1986 World Cup, labelling the act as the Hand of God.

“This happened to us [Gimnasia] and many people are calling it a new Hand of God,” he said.

“I am asking for that hand to do away with the pandemic so people can get back to living their lives, with health and happiness.”

  • Coronavirus: Trump orders meatpacking plants to stay open

US President Donald Trump has ordered meat processing plants to stay open to protect the nation’s food supply amid the coronavirus pandemic.

He invoked a Korean War-era law to mandate that the plants continue to function, amid industry warnings of strain on the supply chain.

An estimated 3,300 US meatpacking workers have been diagnosed with coronavirus and 20 have died.

The UN last month warned the emergency threatened global food supply chains.

Twenty-two US meatpacking plants across the American Midwest have closed during the outbreak.

They include slaughterhouses owned by the nation’s biggest poultry, pork and beef producers, such as Smithfield Foods, Tyson Foods, Cargill and JBS USA.

What does the White House say?

“Such closures threaten the continued functioning of the national meat and poultry supply chain, undermining critical infrastructure during the national emergency,” says Tuesday evening’s executive order, invoking the 1950 Defense Production Act.

“Given the high volume of meat and poultry processed by many facilities, any unnecessary closures can quickly have a large effect on the food supply chain.”

The order designates the meatpacking plants as part of critical infrastructure in the US.

A White House official told US media it will work with the Department of Labor to issue guidance for vulnerable workers, such as over-65s and those with chronic health conditions, to stay at home.

  • Why Ivory Coast ex-footballers snubbed Didier Drogba and voted massively for Sory Diabaté

Shockwaves spread like wildfire when news emerged on Sunday that Ivory Coast former footballers snubbed their own colleague Didier Drogba by voting massively for long-standing FA loyalist Sory Diabate in the FA presidential elections.

The Chelsea great and former African Footballer of the Year had ZERO votes in the first phase of the election for the person to take over from Sidy Diallo as the FA President.

All the votes went to Diabate, who had served for years as the assistant to Diallo, as the little known but influential figure went on to humiliate the legend with a thumping him in the highly symbolic votes.

It was expected that Drogba’s team-mates would overwhelmingly vote for their famous colleague but soon it became clear that the ex-players preferred the experienced football administrator.

Why Didier Zokora didn’t vote for Didier Drogba and why Drogba had zero votes from the Association of former players. Some little facts to let you understand the story better.

It is not envy. The old players don’t hate the Chelsea legend. What happened was natural and backed by common sense. You would do same if you were in the same scenario.

In September 2019 Didier Zokora – who played with Drogba in the national team for 12 good years – was appointed to the Technical Directorate of the Ivory Coast Football Association.

The man behind this appointment was the vice president of the Ivory Coast FA (pictured) named Sory Diabaté who is also the Ivory Coast League boss.

In fact, nine other former footballers including the great Abdoulaye Traore, Youssouf Fofana, Ibrahim Bakayoko, Kone Ibrahim and others were appointed into similar positions by the FA.

By so doing most of them became engaged and found jobs in football as ex-national stars. At least they are salaried staff of the Ivory Coast FA and they won’t be “begging around”.

Again this man – Sorry Diabaté – was key in helping at least 10 former footballers acquire their coaching license free of charge. None of them paid a penny.

So in 2020, this same man Diabaté declares intention to be Ivory Coast FA president and the Association of Former footballers go to the election room to decide which candidate to support and you want that to be Drogba? Because he belongs to them? Hell no. That would have been a cruel way to pay Diabaté back. What the former players did was the sensible thing to do. I will do same.

Other factors worked against Drogba. He is not liked in the Ivorian media as a criticism of his knowledge of domestic football grew. He is accused of not having an interest in domestic football. He has not watched even one match locally. He launched his Presidential campaign via an interview with a French television station. It did not go down well with many Ivorians.

He was in Egypt for the recent AFCON but didn’t visit the Ivorian team in camp. His cardinal sin with his team-mates is that he didn’t even inform the former players that he was contesting for the position.

They don’t hate Drogba. It was a hard decision and they decided this way. The ex-footballers voted to support somebody who was at their services about one year ago. This is only natural and common sense support this decision.

Zokora played with Drogba. Yes, that is true but he didn’t vote for him and he could not have voted for him. Diabaté won over his heart long ago.

  • Housing Ministry calls for voluntary nationwide desilting of drains amid rainy season

The Minister for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, has urged citizens to voluntarily desilt drains in their communities to prevent flooding during the rainy season.

Speaking at a press briefing held on Tuesday by the Information Ministry Mr. Atta Akyea urged Ghanaians “to voluntarily embark on the desilting of choked drains in their own neighbourhoods to permit the free flow of sewage.”

“Let us wear our face masks, do social distancing, and voluntarily desilt our choked drains. It is in our best interests to do so,” he added.

Mr. Atta Akyea said his ministry is collaborating with the Water and Sanitation and Local Government and Rural Development ministries as well as Municipal, Metropolitan and District Chief Executives and other authorities in the various localities to supervise this exercise.

Already, the country has begun experiencing downpours which have resulted in flooding some parts of the country.

Quoting an April 22 letter he wrote to the Water and Sanitation and Local Government and Rural Development ministries, he said: “My genuine concern is that the nation should not suffer double agony with severe flooding affecting lives, livelihood and property during the rainy season against the backdrop of the forecast of rainfall patterns across the nation well beyond normal by the Ghana Meteorological Agency.”

“It is imperative that we bring this to the attention of all stakeholders like Municipal, Metropolitan and District Chief Executives, traditional authorities, civil society organizations and the security services to ensure that we embark upon a voluntary nationwide removal of foreign materials in drains in order to avert a disaster in the not too distant future,” he added from the letter.

Major rainy season to last till June

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has already predicted that the 2020 major rainy season will start from March and will last till June 2020.

It said the prediction is based on observations of conditions on land and ocean as well as outputs from major world forecast centres like the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), Climate Prediction Centre (NCEP-CPC), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF), UK Met Office and Meteo France.

In its seasonal rainfall forecast, the agency said “above normal” rainfall should be expected for the period of March, April and May within the forest zones while normal rainfall can be expected for the rest of the country.

On the back of this, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has cautioned persons who live in flood-prone areas to take precautions as the rains set in.

The disaster management organisation is among other things asking such persons to relocate to higher grounds while observing safety procedures to avert any incidents.

  • CAF sets May 5 as the deadline for member nations to decide on league

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), has asked the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to inform them of their final decision concerning the suspended 2019-20 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season.

  • Gladson Awako rates Ghana league ahead of Congolese league

Veteran Ghanaian midfielder Gladson Awako has shared that he will rate the Ghana League over the league in Congo if he compares the kind of pitches used in the two countries.

The captain of Accra Great Olympics has spent 5 years in Congo between 2012 and 2017 where he played for African giants TP Mazembe.

Having tasted football in the two countries, he says he can say the Ghana League is better than that of Congo.

“One thing I will say is their league is not better than ours. The league over there is not better than ours here. If you see some of the pitches we played on it is so bad.

“Over here we are lucky sometimes we get better fields to play on and all that. Over there you travel and you play on a very rough field. There is not even grass field to play on. So with that our league here is so much better than the one in Congo”, Gladson Awako explained in an interview with Accra-based Angel FM on Monday.

He added, “The only thing is they always get the chance to be in the Champions League, to get to the money zone and it is only TP Mazembe and Vita Club”.

The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) has written to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to seek for its plans for the 2019/2020 football season in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ghana just like every African country has been affected by the Covid-19, leading to the suspension of the football season for the past couple of months.

While it is unknown when the fight against the disease will be won, nobody knows when it will be same for the sport to resume in the region.

In a letter from CAF to its member associations including Ghana, it has asked to be furnished with how the various associations are planning to finalize the football season.

“In view of the current circumstance, we would like to enquire about the current situation of your national leagues/national cups (ranking, number of pending matches, etc.) as well as the strategies your intend to apply to finalize those competitions be it through competition or annulment”, a CAF letter dated April 26, 2020, said.

CAF says it will stand on the feedback from the Ghana FA and the other football associations to design a plan for the organization of inter-club competitions for the next season.

The Oti Regional Minister, Nana Owusu Yeboah has clarified that the number of COVID-19 cases currently in his region has reduced from 17 to eight.

He said although the region officially recorded 17 positive novel coronavirus infections, nine out of the number are no more under the care of the region.

He explained that six out of the number were going to their homes in the northern region while three were also going to their homes in neighbouring Togo when they were intercepted.

The nine persons were subsequently screened and samples taken for testing.

Upon the requests of the patients, they were transported to the Northern region and the republic of Togo respectively for their treatment. Officials of the Northern region and Togo have since been notified and they are monitoring the situation.

The Oti joined the league of regions who have COVID-19 with 13 cases last Thursday, April 23, 2020. According to the Regional Minister, all 13 were among 67 travelers from Accra hidden in cargo trucks destined for the Northern region. They hid in the trucks to avoid detection from security officials due to the fact that Accra was at the time on partial lockdown.

  • Media commended for professionalism in COVID-19 reportage

Ghanaian media have been commended for the professionalism shown so far in the reportage of the Coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Police Sergeant Daniel Ofori-Appiah, Founder of Watch Your Tongue (WYT) Ghana Initiative, who made the commendation, said the dissemination of information during these trying times has been phenomenal.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra, he said: “I highly commend and appreciate the Ghanaian media for the wonderful job since Ghana had the first case of Coronavirus also known as COVID-19”.

Sergeant Ofori-Appiah said in helping to curb the spread of the pandemic, the media has contributed immensely by the sensitising, cautioning and educating the Ghanaian populace.

“Their nationalistic effort cannot be questioned so far as the current relief we are experiencing is concerned,” adding that “many media houses have committed their precious prime time towards creating awareness”.

He expressed contentment about the fact that sensationalism, discrimination, favouritism and half-truths did not take the good side of their reports.

“Professionalism has been paramount during this era,” he said, adding that there are so many institutions that needed to be applauded but “I wish to say ‘ayekoo’ to the media”.

“I believe this good gesture will continue for the betterment of our dear mother Ghana, he said.

  • Suspension of football is hurting Kotoko financially – Kennedy Boakye Ansah

Communications Director of Asante Kotoko Kennedy Boakye Ansah says the suspension of football activities due to the Coronavirus pandemic is hurting the finance of the Porcupine Warriors.

The Coronavirus pandemic which has brought the world to its knees halted the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League season due to the ban on all social gatherings by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

This action taken by the President has wrecked the main source of revenue(the gate proceeds) for clubs in the country.

In an interview with Citi FM, Kenndy Ansah said though the club has some sponsorship packages, it is still not enough to take care of the financial needs of Asante Kotoko.

“Kotoko, like any other Ghanaian club, has been feeling the strain for some time especially when our major source of revenue is from the gates.”

“We are a bit lucky to have some sponsorship but even that can only take care of about 30 to 40 percent of our monthly expenditure. So we have to find other means of mobilising funds to run the club.

He added that though they are being supported financially by the Executive Chairman of the club, he hopes that the fight against coronavirus will end soon for football to bounce back.

“We have had some great support from the Executive Chairman, Dr. Kwame Kyei. In these times, it is not easy for all the clubs but we will survive.

“The situation is under control but the only thing we want is to overcome the current pandemic so our football comes back.”

U.S. stock index futures climbed higher on Tuesday ahead of the next round of quarterly earnings reports, with investors also keenly looking at the safety of reopening economies hit hard by the coronavirus-induced shutdowns.

Wall Street kicked off the week on a strong note Monday as several U.S. states allowed businesses to reopen after a near-total halt in activity to contain the outbreak.

Powered by a raft of U.S. monetary and fiscal stimulus, all three major stock indexes are now within 20% of their record closing highs, but analysts warn of further losses as economic data foreshadows a deep global recession.

Consumer confidence figures for April due later in the day are expected to slide further from near three-year lows hit in March, as widespread production halts put millions of Americans out of work.

Investors are also waiting for a two-day Federal Reserve policy meeting that kicks off on Tuesday, although expectations are low for more central bank easing at this time.

Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) jump-started first-quarter reports for the day with its first quarterly loss in nine years, but shares rose 3.4% as it said its average daily cash burn will slow in the second quarter.

  • Premier League hopeful of June 8 restart as training centres reopen

Premier League clubs will meet on Friday to discuss plans to resume the 2019-20 campaign in June.

The English top flight, which has been suspended since mid-March because of the spread of the coronavirus, could be back in action as early as June 8 to have the season concluded by the end of July.

UK Secretary for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Oliver Dowden, says that he is working with clubs to bring the league back next month.

He said during parliamentary questions: “I personally have been in talks with the Premier League with a view to getting football up and running as soon as possible in order to support the whole football community.

“But, of course, any such moves would have to be consistent with public health guidance.”

The timeline being proposed would mean clubs would have to be back in full training by May 18 and some top-flight teams are already easing their way back.

On Monday, Arsenal, Everton and West Ham allowed players to return to their training grounds , but warned that they must continue to abide by social distancing guidelines.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are set to reopen parts of their training ground for the senior squad as of Tuesday.

Matches will likely have to be played behind closed doors initially, a likelihood being explored by most countries looking to conclude the 2019-20 season.

The English Football League (EFL) has pledged to have rigorous coronavirus testing in place before games can be played again and insisted the return must not affect key workers.

The Bundesliga is aiming to kick off again on May 9 pending government approval, according to CEO Christian Seifert , but the German police union has warned that even matches behind closed doors would attract “irresponsible” crowds outside stadiums .

The Polish government has approved a five-step plan to bring the Ekstraklasa back by May 29 , while in Italy, players will be allowed to start training individually from May 4 .

Spanish health minister Salvador Illa has resisted laying out a timeframe but suggested La Liga will not return before the summer .

Elsewhere, FIFA is willing to allow teams to make five substitutes in each match in an effort to minimise the risk of injury as the season will have to be concluded in a tight schedule.

  • We need logistics and more hands at KCCR – Virologist

A virologist at Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR), Dr. Michael Owusu has called for more hands as well as logistics to enhance the capacity of rapid testing at the center.

He has revealed the Centre currently has over 10,000 backlog of COVID 19 samples yet to be tested, indicating that their work is being hampered by inadequate staff and logistics.

According to him, the situation is putting pressure on the staff to work extra hours in ensuring more testing are done to offload or reduce the backlog.

Dr. Owusu disclosed this to Nana Yaw Opare (a.k.a Wofa) on “Yensempa” show on Onua FM, Tuesday, adding that the center on daily basis test 1,500 to 2,000 cases with only 30 staff.

He admitted government has done massive work since the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic but believes more has to be done to strengthen the approach in the fight against the novel coronavirus.

Dr. Owusu noted that government is already in talks with the center on resourcing it but there is the need to push harder to fast track the processes in equipping the center during this period.

Touching briefly on precautionary measures put across by Ghana Health Service, the virologist entreated the general public to strongly adhere to all protocols due to the transmission mode of the virus.

He explained the virus is transferable to everyone irrespective of age but it is quite severe with the aged and those with underlining ailments.

He thus admonished against the improper use of the face mask and advised that it should be changed twice a day.

Dr. Owusu explained the virus could survive in face mask for more than seven days hence the need to wash the local made with disinfectants, dried in the hot sun and ironed before reuse.

  • Norwegian billionaire held over wife’s disappearance

Norwegian police said Tuesday they had arrested a wealthy businessman over the disappearance of his wife 18 months ago, the latest twist in a case that has kept the Nordic countries on tenterhooks.

Tom Hagen, 70, was arrested as he was leaving his home for work on Tuesday, on suspicion of “murder or accessory to murder,” commissioner Ida Melbo Oystese told a press conference.

Hagen’s wife Anne-Elisabeth Hagen disappeared without a trace from their home in Lorenskog, east of Oslo, on October 31, 2018.

A poorly written ransom note, containing threats and a demand for nine million euros in crypto currency, was found at the scene.

Sporadic contact with the alleged kidnappers on digital platforms initially supported the theory that she had been the victim of a rogue abduction.

However, by June 2019, police were re-evaluating their leads and started examining whether it was a murder that had been disguised as a kidnapping.

Tom Hagen is the 164th richest man in Norway with an estimated net worth of 1.9 billion Norwegian kroner ($183 million, 168 million euros) in 2019, according to business magazine Kapital.

His lawyer said he denied the allegations.

“He forcefully maintains that he has nothing to do with it,” Svein Holden told public broadcaster NRK.

Police did not present any concrete evidence to support their suspicions or speculate on a potential motive, but said the case “had traces of a clear, premeditated misdirection.”

Question marks remain as to what police believe Tom Hagen’s exact role in the disappearance to be, whether he had accomplices and the whereabouts of Anne-Elisabeth Hagen, now presumed dead.

Police said they had yet to interrogate the suspect.

  • Coronavirus: ‘One billion’ could become infected worldwide – Report

One billion people could become infected with the coronavirus worldwide unless vulnerable countries are given urgent help, an aid group has warned.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) said financial and humanitarian aid was needed to help slow the global spread of the virus.

It said “fragile countries” such as Afghanistan and Syria needed “urgent funding” to avoid a major outbreak.

“There remains a small window of time to mount a robust response,” it warned.

There have been more than three million confirmed cases of Covid-19 worldwide with more than 200,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University in the US.

The IRC’s report, which is based on models and data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Imperial College London, estimated there could be between 500 million and one billion infections globally.

It also said there could be more than three million deaths across dozens of conflict-affected and unstable countries.

“These numbers should serve as a wake-up call,” said the head of the IRC, David Miliband.

“The full, devastating and disproportionate weight of this pandemic has yet to be felt in the world’s most fragile and war-torn countries,” he added. “The key now is for donors to urgently put flexible funding behind frontline efforts.

“Governments must work together to remove any impediment to humanitarian assistance.”

The US-based group, which responds to humanitarian crises around the world, said factors such as household size, population density, healthcare capacity and pre-existing conflicts could all increase the risk of major outbreaks developing.

Many countries in the developing world have low official infection rates or death tolls – but the actual numbers are believed to be much higher.

Caroline Seguin, who manages programmes in Yemen for the medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF), said the organisation believed people there were already dying from Covid 19 – just not in hospitals.

“We are convinced that there is local transmission ongoing but the capacity of testing is very, very low,” she told the BBC.

Ms Seguin said Yemen, which was referenced in the IRC report as being particularly vulnerable to coronavirus, said the country had been weakened by recent outbreaks of cholera and measles.

“The health system is collapsing… and for sure the ministry of health is not able to cope with this disease,” she said.

A major issue facing developing or unstable countries is a lack of suitable medical equipment for treating patients with Covid-19.

In Afghanistan and Pakistan, there are fewer than ten ventilators for every one million people. In Nigeria, that figure is even more stark at 0.8 ventilators per million.

For context, Italy, which has one of the highest death tolls from the virus in the world, had 80 ventilators per one million people at the start of the crisis.

The two had a son but got divorced later in 2018.

While sharing his story, the celebrated tailor said people in relationships facing challenges tend to focus more negatives than the positive things they have and continue to achieve.

Elikem explained that highlighting good milestones and good things in the relationship helps the couple grow while they handle the ugly side.

“When you draw on the bad you only bring more bad,” he said.

Elikem Kumordzie added, he only realises now that he probably was not ready for marriage at the age he tied the knot with Pokello although he was in love and fully committed.
