  • Phillipa Baafi partners Gender Ministry to feed multitude

Gospel musician Philipa Baafi has distributed food items to some residents of Old Bortianor in Accra to mitigate the effect of the ongoing lockdown on their lives.

She partnered the Gender Ministry through her Philipa Baafi Foundation to feed a total of 500 people with hot meals.

Explaining the need for the initiative, she said the responsibility of ensuring the comfort of Ghanaians does not only rest on the shoulders of the government hence her donation.

“I believe he who works for a good cause deserves support so we have to rally behind the government to feed the vulnerable in society.”

“This is not going to be a one-time thing, it is a continuous initiative with the Ministry to bring relief to some people as the lockdown is in effect,” Phillipa assured.

Aiding in the distribution, Gender Minister, Cynthia Morrison used the opportunity to solicit the support of other musicians, asking them to come on board to make the initiative a worthy one.

  • Hearts of Oak MD reveals club’s finances hit by coronavirus clampdown

Hearts of Oak Managing Director Frederick Moore says the Coronavirus shutdown has hit the club’s finances.

The Ghana Premier League was suspended last month after the country recorded more cases

Ghana football has struggled after the airing of a documentary which exposed bribery and corruption in the local game.

There has been no competitive football since 2018 and this latest development is a huge blow.

“Last year we had competition but it was a third of what we would have actually experienced in a proper football season,” he told BBC World Service’s Newsday programme.

“The impact of that is that it lost some glitter in the minds of people about football. Also, more importantly, the funding – the sponsorship – almost dried up for most of the clubs and it meant club owners had to dig deep into their own pockets.

“So when 2019/2020 came in, with the launch of the season and everything that went on, it was really encouraging to see football coming back.”

  • COVID-19: 80 fishermen under mandatory quarantine in Central Region

Eighty fishermen in the Central Region have been put under mandatory quarantine on their return from a fishing expedition in neighbouring African countries, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) disclosed on April 14, 2020.

Central Regional Director of the GHS, Dr Akosua Owusu-Sarpong, at a meeting organised by the Regional Coordinating Council, said the Service was following up with contact tracing of 550 people to ensure that they did self-isolation or be quarantined.

She explained that under the circumstance, quarantine and isolation were critical in containing the disease and said such measures were to facilitate public health safety.

Dr Owusu-Sarpong said the Region had since received 273 suspected cases out of which 155 had come out negative with only one confirmed case.

She added that a confirmed case, who was diagnosed in Accra but a resident of the Region, was also being managed at a health facility in the region.

Responding to agitations from community members against using a facility in their area as isolation centres, the GHS Central Regional Director explained that any facility used for such purposes would be secured such that no person put there would be allowed to mingle with community members.

She appealed to all metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives to engage more with the communities to get them to understand and comply with the protocols for their own safety.

On his part, Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan bemoaned the situation where the markets and coastal communities in the Region were not observing the social distancing protocol.

He expressed regret about agitations over the decision to use some senior high schools as isolation centres saying every step being taken was in the interest of the larger population.

  • Coronavirus: Give us permanent jobs else we’ll withdraw our services – NABCO nurses

Professional nurses under the Heal Ghana Module of Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) have petitioned the government and Ghana Health Service to enrol them as full-time staff.

According to them, the exposure as health workers during this Coronavirus pandemic exposes them to the potential risk of contracting the virus.

They, therefore, urged the government to appreciate their services by providing full inclusiveness in the health sector and give them stimulus packages that will motivate them to continue discharging their services.

In a statement copied to GhanaWeb, the group has threatened to withdraw their services if the government fails to adhere to their request.

They are also demanding an increment of their monthly allowance from GHC699.25 to GHC1000 as compensation for their relentless efforts and years of sacrifices made towards the extension of health care delivery in the country.

    Below is a full statement

Nabco, Heal Ghana Nurses(Powered by CONAT)

Petition to Government: Give us Stimulus packages and permanent jobs else we will fall back amid the needful time of this Pandemic

We are grateful to the government led by H.E Nana Addo Dankwa for the timely intervention, Nation Builders Corps, which for close to two years has seen partial engagement of professional nurses under the Heal Ghana Module who were idle home after years of completing the various colleges and universities with the huge toll comprising 2013-2017 graduates of enrolled nurses.

Considerately, upon the inception of Nabco, a lot of graduate nurses were unwilling to subscribe to the course of nation-building due to reasons best known to them. However, we the section of nurses under Heal Ghana stood firm behind the government and eschewed all impudence, pride and traumas over possible low recognition against permanent colleagues with same certificates working in the various health sectors and most importantly the acknowledgement of the meagre allowance earmarked for the tedious services associated with our profession.

However, with determination, enthusiasm and insatiable patriotism to our quest of Nation Building, we bought into the idea of Nation Building and have modestly worked in the various health facilities complimenting the government’s commitments to expanding healthcare services across the length and breadth of this country.
We must admit, putting aside the envious juicy benefits reserved for permanent staffs, all duties towards health care delivery are assigned and performed equally between Nabco recruits and permanent staffs and in all circumstances, we as Heal Ghana Nurses have never resented and compromised our services because we love our country and the people.

Nevertheless, in the wake of the recent development of Coronavirus which is apparently spreading insidiously across the regions of this country, it is our panicking concern that every health personnel especially we the nurses having close contacts with patients at the various wards are at potential risk, therefore, this is the time for government to appreciate our services by full inclusiveness in health sector and giving us stimulus packages requisite to motivate us to continue discharging our selfless services.

Respectfully, we wish to reach out below our appeal to the government through the office of the C.E.O of Nabco, to the Office of the President, Ministry of Health, and Ministry Employment.

    Petition below:

    1. Request for Ghana Health Service to consider Nabco Trainees first in the upcoming recruitment. Particularly, we request that the portal is been opened to enrolled nurses under Heal Ghana who since 2013 have been neglected from accessing the portal and receive clearance for permanent job. We are much concerned with we the enrolled nurses who currently occupy greater number of Nabco recruits under Heal Ghana because since we got engaged, a lot of postings have been done seeing some of our colleagues grabbing permanent appointments including those who didn’t recognize Nabco job opportunity and sacrifices as worthy enough.

    2. Request for extra allowances or commensurate increment of the monthly allowance from ¢699.25 to ¢1000.

    3. Full life insurance package for all nurses under Heal Ghana Module of Nabco Initiative.

It is our utmost appeal that, the government gives urgent attention to our petition, and compensate our relentless efforts and years of sacrifices we’ve made towards extension of health care delivery.

We wish to maintain the position that if the government fails to adhere to the concerns raised, we will be left with no other option than to withdraw our services in the critical moments needed and again exercise cautions in our service delivery.

    Thank You.

  • Coronavirus: Older people being ‘airbrushed’ out of virus figures

Many older people are being “airbrushed” out of coronavirus figures in the UK, charities have warned.

The official death toll has been criticised for only covering people who die in hospital – but not those in care homes or in their own houses.

Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey told the BBC the daily figure was based on hospital deaths because “it’s accurate and quick”.

Meanwhile, scientists will begin a review of the UK lockdown later.

The evaluation will be passed to the government – but ministers have said it was unlikely restrictions would change.

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, which include every community death linked to Covid-19 in England and Wales, showed a total of 406 such deaths registered up to 3 April had occurred outside of hospitals.

That would have added an extra 11% to the official UK figures, based solely on deaths in hospitals, that were being reported at that time.

Of those extra deaths, 217 took place in care homes, 33 in hospices, 136 in private homes, three in other communal establishments and 17 elsewhere.

Northern Ireland’s chief medical officer has said details about the number of coronavirus-related deaths in care homes remain unclear, but it was reported last week that there were cases of Covid-19 in 20 care homes across the nation.

Industry leaders from Age UK, Marie Curie, Care England, Independent Age and the Alzheimer’s Society have written to Health Secretary Matt Hancock demanding a care package to support social care through the pandemic.

They have also called for a daily update on deaths in the care system.

It comes after the government confirmed there had been coronavirus outbreaks at more than 2,000 care homes in England – although they did not specify the number of deaths that had occurred.

The figures prompted the charity Age UK to claim coronavirus is “running wild” in care homes for elderly people.

“The current figures are airbrushing older people out like they don’t matter,” Caroline Abrahams, the charity’s director, said.

Meanwhile, Britain’s largest care home operator said coronavirus was present in two-thirds – 232 – of the group’s care homes.

Its director, Sir David Behan, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that coronavirus deaths represented about one-third of all deaths at HC-One’s care homes over the last three weeks. HC-One has 329 care homes throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

About 410,000 people live in care homes in the UK, living in 11,300 care homes for older people supplied by 5,500 different providers.

Addressing why deaths in care homes are not being included in the government’s data, Ms Coffey told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that the figures published weekly by the ONS is a “fair” way of establishing the “unfortunate picture” of where deaths are occurring.

England’s care home regulator, the Care Quality Commission, has said it will begin recording deaths in adult social care from this week – asking care providers to give daily updates on the number of confirmed and suspected cases.

Labour’s shadow social care minister Liz Kendall said daily figures were essential to dealing with the “emerging crisis” in care homes and called for the government to offer social care “whatever resources it needs”.

Conservative peer and former work and pensions minister Baroness Altmann told Today that “one or two” people in care homes had said to her they felt as though older people are being treated “like lambs to the slaughter”.

“They [care homes] are left without protective equipment, they are left without testing,” she said.

She added that “the mark of a civilised society” was “how it treats it most vulnerable and oldest citizens”.

It comes after Ms Abrahams said care homes were “underprepared” for the outbreak, adding that the lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) and testing was leading to the spread of coronavirus across the care home sector.

However, Ms Coffey told the Today programme that the care sector was not being left behind, adding that PPE was being delivered “to over 26,000 care settings across the country including care homes, home care providers and also hospices”.

On Monday, the UK’s chief medical adviser Prof Chris Whitty told the daily Downing Street coronavirus briefing that 92 homes in the UK reported outbreaks in one day.

The Department of Health and Social Care later confirmed 2,099 care homes in England have so far had cases of the virus.

Care England has estimated there have been nearly 1,000 deaths from coronavirus in care homes, leaving social care as “the neglected front line”.

The Labour Party has called on the government to publish daily figures of deaths in care homes to highlight the “true scale” of the spread of the virus, which causes the Covid-19 disease.

The issue has regularly been raised by journalists at the daily Downing Street briefing and the government response has been that the number announced each day is based on hospital figures as this can be quickly gathered and analysed – whereas deaths in the wider community take much longer to be collated after death certificates are issued by doctors.

The government says it is following the international standard by quoting the hospital figures each day – and that the fuller ONS figures can lag many days behind.

The latest care homes to confirm residents have died with symptoms of the virus include a home in Drumchapel, Glasgow, a specialist dementia home in Selston, Nottinghamshire, and a home in County Durham where 13 residents have died.

The Department of Health’s official death number of deaths of people in hospital with coronavirus rose to 11,329 on Monday – up by 717 in a day.

Lockdown review The BBC’s science editor David Shukman said the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) meeting later in the day will evaluate various ways coronavirus is unfolding in the UK.

It will look at hospital admissions, the approach to testing, data on intensive care capacity and deaths, the effectiveness of lockdown tactics, and whether or not the public should be advised to wear face masks outdoors.

Meanwhile, the government has defended itself after reports it missed three chances to bulk-buy PPE for healthcare workers treating virus patients.

Health workers in 25 EU countries are set to receive deliveries of kit worth £1.3bn in the coming days, according to the Guardian.

The paper reports the UK missed three opportunities to join the scheme and has not taken part in talks on future purchases.

The Department of Health said it would “consider participating in future EU joint procurement schemes on the basis of public health requirements at the time”.

“We will continue to work with European countries and others in order to make sure that we can increase the capacity within the NHS,” they said.

  • Wisconsin Democrat Jill Karofsky in Supreme Court election upset

Democrat Jill Karofsky has ousted Justice Daniel Kelly from his seat at Wisconsin’s top court in a shock win.

The election went ahead despite Democrat calls for it to be postponed, or held by postal voting, owing to coronavirus fears.

Justice Kelly is the second incumbent state Supreme Court justice to be ousted by voters since 1967. He had the support of President Donald Trump.

Wisconsin is expected to be crucial in the presidential election in November.

Former Vice-President Joe Biden looks set to become the Democratic Party challenger to President Trump after his main rival Bernie Sanders dropped out and backed him.

Media captionBernie Sanders endorses Joe Biden for US president

The US is now the country worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic with 554,684 confirmed cases and 23,608 deaths.

Wisconsin has recorded more than 3,400 coronavirus cases and 154 deaths.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court vote – and the Democratic Party primary election – went ahead last week, after the same court blocked the governor’s effort to postpone it to June.

Voters braved long queues at a limited number of polling stations where some staff wore hazmat suits.

Judges had ordered a delay in the publication of results to make sure absentee votes had arrived and been included in the count.

“Despite the result, the fact that this in-person election took place was a searing loss for Wisconsin,” said Ben Wikler, the chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. “Wisconsin voters will not forget this travesty.”

    Media captionWisconsin continues in-person voting

Wisconsin was the first state in a month to hold a primary with in-person voting since stay-at-home orders swept the US due to the pandemic. The Badger state imposed its own lockdown on 25 March.

All other states have postponed their primary season elections or moved entirely to postal votes while the country remains in the throes of its health emergency.

Dane County Judge Jill Karofsky’s win for the 10-year term reduces the conservative majority in the top court to 4-3.

The court is expected to decide a case that seeks to purge more than 200,000 people from Wisconsin’s voter rolls.

The issue is sensitive in a state where presidential elections have been decided by fewer than 30,000 votes. Mr Trump won Wisconsin in 2016.

  • McDonald’s apologises after China store bans black people

US chain McDonald’s has apologised after a sign telling black people they were banned from entering a branch in southern China prompted outrage online, following reports of discriminatory treatment towards Africans in the city.

Tensions have flared between police and Africans in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou after local officials announced a cluster of COVID-19 cases in a neighbourhood with a large migrant population.

As the row escalated, posts widely shared online showed a sign at fast food chain McDonald’s saying black people were not allowed to enter the restaurant.

The chain apologised and a spokesman for McDonald’s told AFP that the notice was “not representative of our inclusive values”.

In an emailed statement, Mcdonald’s said it removed the sign and temporarily closed the Guangzhou restaurant “immediately upon learning of an unauthorized communication to our guests.”

Several Africans have told AFP they had been forcibly evicted by police from their accommodation, refused service at shops and restaurants, and were subject to mass testing and arbitrary quarantines.

The row has also prompted a diplomatic flurry, with ambassadors and envoys from more than 20 African countries meeting assistant foreign minister Chen Xiaodong on Monday.

Chen promised at the meeting to “lift the health management (measures) on African people, except the confirmed patients”, according to a foreign ministry statement.

He said the Guangdong government is “constantly taking measures to improve” and act “according to the principle of non-discrimination”.

The statement said Chen asked the envoys to “look at the big picture of China-Africa friendship.”

Diplomatic sources told AFP a number of African countries had written a joint letter to the foreign ministry, which condemned the “discrimination and stigmatisation of Africans” in China, but had not yet sent it.

Guangzhou’s US consulate issued an alert on Saturday advising African-Americans to avoid travel to the city due to the targeted crackdown, and the US accused Chinese authorities of “xenophobia” toward Africans.

Beijing has also accused the US of using the row for political purposes to “drive a wedge” between China and Africa.

A total of 111 African nationals in Guangzhou have tested positive for COVID-19, including 19 imported cases, said the city’s executive vice mayor on Monday, according to Xinhua.

He said that 4,553 Africans had undergone nucleic acid testing in Guangzhou since April 4.

But city officials said on Sunday that 4,553 African nationals are currently living in Guangzhou — suggesting every African registered in the city has been tested.

  • Apple shipped 2.5 million iPhones in China in March following virus slump

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) shipped roughly 2.5 million iPhones in China in March, a slight rebound after one of its worst months in the country ever, according to government data published on Friday.

Smartphone companies are hoping for a strong recovery in demand in China, where the deadly coronavirus is subsiding, just as it spreads overseas and looks set to trigger a global recession.

Mobile phone shipments in China in March totalled 21 million units, according to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a government think tank.

That was a more than three-fold increase from February, yet still down roughly 20% compared with March 2019.

Chinese retailers largely resumed operations by early March, with brick-and-mortar outlets re-opening and e-commerce logistics getting back in gear after the virus and tough containment measures brought much of the economy to a standstill in the first two months.

Apple shipped roughly 500,000 phones in China in February, according to the CAICT.

Many smartphone makers are now hoping that sales in China can cushion declines in overseas markets in coming months.

In its quarterly earnings call, the then-CFO of Xiaomi Corp (1810.HK) said that the Chinese market had recovered to roughly 80% of its normal levels.

The company later wrote a letter to the government of India, one of its largest markets, requesting that it consider smartphones an essential commodity and therefore exempt from shipping restrictions.

Earlier this month several Chinese online retailers slashed prices on iPhone 11 models. Apple has let third-party sellers in China offer discounts in the past in order to spur demand.

The company announces its quarterly earnings results on April 30.

  • Coronavirus lockdown: Stop coming to my house for food; come to my office Gender Minister

Cynthia Morrison, Minister of Gender, Child and Social Protection, has revealed that Ghanaians have been storming her home in their numbers for food due to the COVD-19 lockdown.

She, however, appealed to them to stop coming to her house for food but rather go to her office within the Ministries enclave, for food.

She told Kwabena Prah Jnr, host of the Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Tuesday, April 14 that: “I went round helping in the distribution of food to the needy and vulnerable. When I returned home in the evening, hundreds of people have gathered in front of my house waiting for me to return home to give them food”.

“Please, I want to appeal to the public that the food is not being distributed in my house.

“Nobody should come to my house for food. You can all come to the Ministries for the food, not my home.

“I have personally ordered five hundred packs of food to be distributed but please nobody should come to my house for it.”

  • CACI Nungua Estate Assembly supports needy members with food items

The Christ Apostolic Church International, Nungua Estate Assembly, has supported 90 vulnerable members with a donation of food items estimated at GH¢4,000.

The vulnerable members made up of the aged, needy and orphans in the church were given bags of rice, oil, and tomato paste.

The gesture which was done on April 9, 2020, was necessitated because of the partial lockdown in some parts of the country and has affected many people in the country.

According to Rev. Daniel Tei Kwao, Head Pastor of the church, it is prudent for all to support the needy close to us in our homes and communities to help relieve them of all the lockdown pressure.

“I will like to encourage my members and the entire Christ Apostolic church members to be steadfast in the Lord at this hard times and also know that God knows best and this too shall pass and always read this(Psalm 91:1-8) and let’s not forget to individually support the needy ones among us and God will reward us.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo extended the duration of the partial lockdown in some parts of the country further to one week.

This directive is part of efforts by the government in containing the spread of the deadly Coronavirus.

The BBC’s science editor David Shukman said the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) meeting later in the day will evaluate various ways coronavirus is unfolding in the UK.

  • Measles resurgence fear amid coronavirus

Measles outbreaks may occur as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, officials say, because some vaccination programmes are having to be delayed.

Unicef says 117 million children in 37 countries may not get immunised on time.

There have been several large outbreaks in countries across Europe where MMR vaccine uptake has been low.

The UK has already lost its measles-free status, because of rising cases of the potentially deadly infection.

The disease, which causes coughing, rashes and fever, can be prevented by two doses of the mumps, measles and rubella (MMR) vaccine, available free to all young children in the UK.

Here, 95% of five-year-olds have had the first jab – the World Health Organization (WHO) target – but only 87.4% have had the second.

And as measles is highly infectious, even small declines in uptake can have an impact.

An image of a measles vaccineImage copyrightREUTERS
Image captionMeasles is easily preventable through vaccination

The WHO says countries with no active outbreak of measles can temporarily pause their immunisation campaigns.

And 24 countries, including several already dealing with large measles outbreaks, have decided to delay because of the coronavirus pandemic: • Bangladesh • Brazil • Bolivia • Cambodia • Chad • Chile • Colombia • Djibouti • the Dominican Republic • the Democratic Republic of Congo • Ethiopia • Honduras • Kazakhstan • Kyrgyzstan • Lebanon • Maldives • Mexico • Nepal • Nigeria • Paraguay • Somalia • South Sudan • Ukraine • Uzbekistan

But Unicef says even more may face disruptions.

“If the difficult choice to pause vaccination is made due to the spread of coronavirus, we urge leaders to intensify efforts to track unvaccinated children so that the most vulnerable populations can be provided with measles vaccines as soon as it becomes possible to do so,” it said

Spokeswoman Joanna Rea added: “Disruptions to routine vaccine services will increase the risk of children contracting deadly diseases, compound the current pressures on the national health services and risks a second pandemic of infectious diseases.”

  • Coronavirus: UK economy ‘could shrink by record 35%’ by June

Britain’s independent tax and spending watchdog has warned the coronavirus pandemic could see the UK economy shrink by a record 35% by June.

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) said that this was based on an assumption that the current lockdown would last for three months.

Once restrictions were lifted, the OBR said it expected no lasting damage.

Separately, the International Monetary Fund warned the virus would push the UK into its deepest slump for a century.

The IMF expects the UK economy will shrink by 6.5% in 2020, while the global economy will contract by 3%.

It said the pandemic had plunged the world into a “crisis like no other”.

The OBR’s forecast – which is just focused on the virus’s impact on the UK economy and public finances – is more severe.

It said a three-month lockdown followed by three months of partial restrictions would push up the UK’s borrowing bill to an estimated £273bn this financial year, or 14% of gross domestic product (GDP).

This would represent the largest deficit as a share of GDP since World War Two.

While borrowing is expected to jump, the OBR said the government’s unprecedented financial help for workers and businesses would help to limit any long-term damage.

It expects half of the sharp drop in economic growth in the second quarter to be reversed in the three months to September.

While the UK economy is expected to contract by 13% for the year as a whole, the UK is expected to get back to its pre-crisis growth trend by the end of 2020.

The OBR expects a more lasting impact on unemployment, which is estimated to rise by 2.1 million to 3.4 million by the end of June.

Under this scenario, unemployment would hit 10%, from its current 3.9% rate, before easing to around 7.3% at the end of the year.

The jobless rate is expected to remain elevated until 2023, when it is expected to drop back to 4%, in line with the OBR’s March forecast.

    Lasting impact on public finances

The OBR expects UK debt to remain elevated for years to come, with extra borrowing expected to push Britain’s debt share to above 100% of GDP this financial year.

While this will drop sharply as the UK economy recovers, public debt is expected to remain at 84.9% of GDP in four years time, much higher than the 75.3% forecast in the March Budget.

However, the OBR said extra spending by the Treasury to support the economy was crucial to limit the economic damage.

“The government’s policy response will have substantial direct budgetary costs, but the measures should help limit the long-term damage to the economy and public finances – the costs of inaction would certainly have been higher.”

It added that while the lockdown was the main constraint on economic activity, relaxing these measures too soon would cause greater damage.

“The reason why most of the short-term economic impact comes from these measures is that they are successful in limiting the spread of the disease.

“If the measures were not stringent enough to control the disease, then the economic impact from illness would be that much greater.”

  • Coronavirus: Doctors wear face masks for newborns

Fast asleep, swaddled in a towel and snug in a pink beanie, a baby born during a pandemic in a Thai hospital needs one last item to ensure its health a face shield.

Bangkok hospitals are using the shields on newborns in their maternity wards to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Thailand has detected 2,613 cases of the virus, with 41 deaths — a relatively low number despite being the first country outside China to record an infection.

Bangkok is now under an effective lockdown, silencing the usual boistrous and boozy Thai new year Songkran festival this week while an overnight curfew has kept all but essential vehicles off the streets.

Extraordinary measures have also been rolled out at Praram 9 Hospital, where newborns are being fitted with face shields, a precaution taken at other maternity wards across the capital.

The tiny face guards have been designed by the hospital for use when the baby makes its first journey home.

  • Joe Mettle is getting married this year but not to Berla Mundi AJ Poundz

Onua TV presenter AJ Poundz has affirmed brought a new dimension to rumours that gospel singer Joe Mettle was getting married to TV3 presenter Berla Mundi.

Rumours went rife on social media days ago that Joe Mettle and Berla Mundi were secretly going out and were set to get married very soon.

The two, the rumors claimed, have been dating for the past seven months now and were ready to make their relationship official.

The rumors even went further to indicate that Joe Mettle and Berla Mundi had planned to get married earlier but had to postpone because of the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus.

After the news went viral, Joe Mettle reacted to the rumors denying any such wedding plans with Berla Mundi.

Answering a question from a fan on social media, Joe Mettle indicated that the report of his supposed marriage with Berla Mundi was false news.

AJ Poundz who hosts a celebrity gossip show on Onua TV has stated that the rumour is partly true.

According to her, she personally asked Berla Mundi if the rumor was true but the presenter denied it.

She continued that her later checks indicated that though it was not Berla Mundi, Joe Mettle was making plans to get married this year.

AJ disclosed that it was the person who started the gossip that got Berla Mundi mixed up in the wedding matter.

She, however, fell short of naming the lady she claimed Joe Mettle was going to marry.

  • Zoomlion extends disinfection exercise to corporate Ghana

Management of Zoomlion Ghana Limited has initiated a programme to disinfect corporate institutions and other organisation in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zoomlion is undertaking this exercise through its vector control company Vectorpes and other private vector control companies.

According to Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the exercise is being done “at a highly subsidized cost of 50% discount” to enable “every household and business to benefit in order to curb the further spread of the virus as our support to Corporate Ghana.”

It also added that the initiative is in line with measures put in place by the government of Ghana to minimise the spread and impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on Ghana.

The corporate mass disinfection and fumigation project, is being undertaken with media partners including Citi TV, the Despite Group of Companies, Multimedia Group, Metro TV and GhOne TV among others.

It is aimed at disinfecting and fumigating corporate institutions such as businesses, churches, mosques, banks, warehouses, households, high rise buildings, offices and malls among others at very minimal cost to the organization.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, Zoomlion Ghana limited and Vectorpes had already disinfected some vulnerable institutions and major public institutions including the Dworwulu Special School, Akuapem Akropong School for the Blind, Mampong School for the Deaf, the Judicial Service and the Ghana School of Law among others.

Similar activities have been undertaken at the University of Ghana (UG), University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), the Accra Technical University, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), some banks and oil companies among others on highly subsidized business levels.

“Corporate institutions are therefore being encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity during this lockdown to disinfect their premises against bacteria, germs and influenza viruses, by contacting numbers provided for immediate inspection, disinfection and fumigation at a 50% discount rate,” the statement from Zoomlion said.

Vectorpes undertakes its assignment with state-of-the-art equipment for disinfection and fumigation using the WHO-approved chemicals.

It will be recalled that Zoomlion Ghana Limited and Vectorpes at the onset of the pandemic partnered the government through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) undertook a disinfection exercise of over 2,000 markets, lorry parks and other public spaces across the 16 regions of Ghana.

“The company acknowledges the technical support it has been receiving from the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research at the University of Ghana, Legon,” the statement noted.

Management of the company also advised the public that “As we undertake this exercise will also add our voice to the call on people to stay at home, practice social distancing and all the protocols spelt out by government and the World Health Organisation”.

Other private sector partners in the exercise are Desert Lions, Modapest Ghana, Limited, Fumigations Services Ghana, AsLord Company Limited, and J. A. Biney among others.

  • Italian Football Federation hopes to test players for coronavirus in May before season restart

The Italian Football Federation hopes that players can be tested for coronavirus at the start of May in preparation for the season to restart.

Serie A has been suspended since 9 March because of the global pandemic.

There is no set date for when the campaign can resume in Italy, with 12 full rounds and four outstanding fixtures still to play.

“As soon as the conditions are right, we’ll finish the championship,” said federation president Gabriele Gravina.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, he added: “Soon, there will be a meeting. We will establish the procedure which we will then communicate.

“We will start, I hope, at the beginning of May with tests to ensure that players are negative and training can follow.

“Will we play through the summer? We don’t have a deadline but the idea is to finish the championships.”

Italy has been one of the countries hardest hit by the coronavirus crisis, and players at a number of clubs have been infected.

Juventus lead the Italian top flight, one point ahead of Lazio and nine clear of third-placed Inter Milan.

Brescia president Massimo Cellino, whose side are bottom of the table, has said he is ready to forfeit the club’s remaining games if the season resumes.

Last week, German teams became the first from Europe’s top leagues to return to training, with precautions in place.

  • Harry Kane: Tottenham will not sell striker to domestic rival this summer

Tottenham Hotspur have no intention of letting striker Harry Kane leave the club this summer and would not sell to a domestic rival.

Kane, 26, signed a six-year contract with Spurs in June 2018.

Last month, he said he would not stay at the north London club “just for the sake of it”, and there are reports chairman Daniel Levy would be open to selling him for about £200m.

Manchester United are long-time admirers of the England captain.

Tottenham were one of the first Premier League clubs to furlough staff in response to the coronavirus pandemic, with Levy warning that “people need to wake up to the enormity” of the crisis.

However, the club subsequently reversed that decision following criticism from supporters, with only board members now taking salary reductions.

There are suggestions that because of financial worries, Levy would sanction Kane’s sale if the fee was in the region of the world record £200m Paris St-Germain paid Barcelona to sign Brazil forward Neymar in 2017.

However, there is uncertainty over the summer transfer market given the present shutdown of football across Europe, with all the major clubs facing a financial headache.

  • $1billion cash: Were not back to an IMF program – Gabby Otchere-Darko

An influential member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has explained even though the government of Ghana has secured a facility of $1 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support its fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic, it does not mean the country is back in an IMF programme.

Following the announcement that the IMF had successfully approved a credit facility of $1 billion to help Ghana confront the virus, many called out the governing NPP for demonizing the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) for borrowing from the IMF while the NDC was in power.

But in a sharp rebuttal, Mr Asare explained that the money made available by the IMF to help countries fight the virus is not similar to the Extended Credit Facility program that the NDC government entered into with the IMF in 2015.

Instead, he praised the current administration for being able to double the amount the IMF had made available to the country by making a strong case.

“Ghana pushed for $1bn IMF support to fight Covid-19. Yes, IMF has approved $1bn for Ghana. No, this does not mean we are back in an IMF program. The Fund says it has a $1 trillion war chest to fight Covid-19. Ghana made a strong case for double what IMF had on the table for us,” he wrote.

Ghana is among developing countries that have had to turn to the IMF for support to fight the pandemic due to resource constraints.

  • Coronavirus: Trump claims ‘total’ authority to lift lockdown

President Donald Trump has claimed “total” power to lift the nationwide coronavirus lockdown, contradicting governors and legal experts.

“The president of the United States calls the shots,” Mr Trump said during a combative press conference in which he feuded with reporters.

But the US Constitution says the states maintain public order and safety.

Ten states on the US East and West coasts are planning to lift their strict stay-at-home orders.

The US is the global epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic with 682,619 confirmed cases and 23,608 deaths.

    What did President Trump say?

Mr Trump, a Republican, told the daily White House coronavirus briefing on Monday that his administration was finalising a plan to reopen the US economy, which has been largely shut down to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

The Trump administration has signalled 1 May as a potential date for easing the restrictions.

The current White House recommendations for Americans to avoid restaurants and non-essential travel and keep in-person gatherings to no more than 10 people expire on 30 April.

But when journalists queried whether Mr Trump had the authority to over-ride stay-at-home orders imposed on a state-by-state basis, he said: “When somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total.

“It’s total. The governors know that.”

He added: “That being said, we’re going to work with the states.”

The president insisted “numerous provisions” in the US founding charter give him such power, without specifying which ones.

But legal experts say the president does not have the authority to reverse a public health restriction put in place at the state or local level.

Asked by the BBC’s Jon Sopel if he was concerned about the possibility of having to close the economy again if a second wave of coronavirus strikes, Mr Trump said: “It does weigh on my mind.”

He told reporters the number of deaths from the virus in the US had begun to plateau, indicating that social distancing efforts had succeeded.

During the briefing, the White House played a video montage lambasting the media coverage, touting the president’s handling of the pandemic and clips of governors praising the Trump administration.

Several news outlets, which have been broadcasting the daily briefings live, quickly cut away.

  • Lands Minister commends Chirano Gold Mines on coronavirus preventive measures

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, has commended Chirano Gold Mines Limited, on measures put in place to ensure employees and residents of local communities are protected from COVID-19.

The minister, who paid a working visit to the mine, said the protocols put in place to prevent infections from outside and its strict adherence was proactive and timely.

For instance, although mining workers are exempted from the lockdown announced by the President, Chirano Gold Mines has taken extra steps to lockdown its workforce within the mine site and the catchment areas. The staff of the mine who have the capacity to work from home have been made to do so and those whose presence is required on-site, are confined to the catchment area of the mine.

Chirano Gold Mines has also put in place medical screening for all persons visiting the site, and the temperatures of workers are checked before they get on buses to work, others not on buses are checked at the entrance, on a daily basis.

Also, Veronica buckets with soap for handwashing, and hand sanitizers have been placed at vantage points all over the mine, while social distancing is strictly being enforced.

Also, to protect the catchment community from the deadly coronavirus, the mine has disinfected the local communities, including homes and markets. It has rolled out a sensitisation programme to educate residents on COVID-19.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, who went through thorough medical screening with his entourage before the inspection, was confident that the measure will substantially contribute to keeping the virus off the mine.

He was equally impressed with Chirano preparedness to contain a possible outbreak of COVID-19, in the unlikely event that an infection is recorded on the Mine.

Chirano Gold Mines has established an isolation center and equipped it with coronavirus test kits, personal protective equipment (PPEs) and other essential medical supplies.

The minister said he had been mandated to inspect and assess the measures being put in place by the mining companies to protect employees and described the measures being undertaken by Chirano Gold Mines as a benchmark for other mines to emulate.

The Vice President and General Manager of Chirano Gold Mines, Terence Watungwa assured the minister that the existing measures will be sustained and new ones will be rolled out as the coronavirus situation evolves to protect employees and local communities.

  • Coronavirus: ‘Without these deliveries my children would starve’

Families in parts of rural England say they have become totally dependent on volunteers delivering food to them during the coronavirus crisis.

About 1.5 million households are at least a half-hour round trip from a food store on foot or by public transport, government data suggest.

In urban areas, the average is less than 15 minutes, excluding time in the shop.

The Countryside Alliance said local food volunteers were “plugging gaps” in rural communities.

Under lockdown restrictions, shopping for food is one of only four reasons why people are allowed to leave their home.

In rural England, many households face long distances to go food shopping, which becomes more difficult if a family has to self-isolate because of COVID-19.

“Without these deliveries from volunteers my children would starve,” said Catherine Boyes, a mother of six who lives on a farm on the edge of the North York Moors National Park.

She said she had struggled to get a regular delivery from a supermarket due to surging demand and is reliant on the Pickering Help Network to deliver supplies.

“My eldest son has cystic fibrosis so we can’t go to the shops and risk coming into contact with this hideous disease,” she said.

“This crisis really has brought out how isolated we are.”

Families across the country are facing difficulties receiving regular home deliveries from the big supermarkets.

Tesco has said it will not be able to meet all requests for home deliveries.

Sainsbury’s has said it will prioritise vulnerable people for delivery slots while Asda has said if people can shop safely in stores they should do so to free up deliveries for those who need them.

  • Global coronavirus infections exceed 1.9M

The global Coronavirus cases surpassed 1.9 million on Monday, according to a running tally by U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.

The Hopkins data showed that the global number of deaths reached 118,459, while the number of people who recovered stands at 446,002.

As a total of 1,904,566 cases are recorded worldwide, the U.S. has the most cases with more than half a million infections — over 572,000. It also has the highest number of deaths with more than 23,000, becoming the new epicenter of the COVID-19.

While Italy has the second-highest death toll with 20,465, Spain is the second country with the highest cases, 169,496.

China, ground zero of the virus, most recently reported 3,345 deaths and over 83,200 cases, but those figures raise question in and outside China.

Recently, according to the Hopkins data, daily fatalities remain in single digits in China and it recorded the most recoveries from the epidemic with above 78,000.

Overall, the virus has spread to 185 countries since it first emerged in China in December.

Despite the rising number of cases, most who contract the virus suffer mild symptoms before making a recovery.

  • MPs summon China-owned firm execs over security concerns

A leading UK-based firm will be summoned on Tuesday by MPs to answer questions over security concerns.

There are concerns that the Chinese owner of Imagination Technologies has renewed efforts to transfer ownership of sensitive security software to companies controlled by China.

Lawmakers worry the coronavirus crisis is diverting attention from controversial technology transfers.

The fear is that networks in the UK, Europe and the US could be compromised.

Speaking to the BBC, Tom Tugendhat, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee said he was concerned that technology developed by Imagination Technologies, based in Hertfordshire, could be used to fine tune the design of so-called “backdoors” into strategically important digital infrastructure.

“The world has changed and companies – particularly tech companies – are on the frontline,” said Mr Tugendhat.

“Whoever writes the code, writes the rules for the world, more than any regulation passed by bureaucrats. There’s no point in taking back control from Brussels, only to hand it over to Beijing.”

Imagination Technologies was acquired by a US-based but Chinese state-owned investment firm called Canyon Bridge in September 2017, which is in turn owned by a Chinese state-owned investment fund called China Reform.

Mr Tugendhat said Theresa May’s government approved the acquisition on the basis that Canyon Bridge was licensed and regulated by US law.

Since then it has moved its headquarters to the Cayman Islands and as such is no longer a US-controlled entity.

Several senior executives, including chief executive Ron Black, have stepped down recently citing concerns about the future direction and ownership of the company.

Chief product officer Steve Evans and chief technical officer John Rayfield also resigned recently.

Mr Evans is understood to have said in his resignation letter: “I will not be part of a company that is effectively controlled by the Chinese government.”

An attempt by China Reform to stage a boardroom coup ten days ago by appointing four of its own directors were aborted, but the call for evidence comes amid renewed concerns that the Chinese owners of Imagination are preparing a fresh attempt to transfer sensitive technology patents to mainland China.

As well as designing graphics and virtual reality software for computer chips, industry experts say that Imagination also produces software which can detect whether any weaknesses in sensitive digital networks – so-called “backdoors” are the result of error or intention.

The UK has already approved the limited use of Chinese-owned Huawei equipment in the construction of new superfast 5G networks that promise to deliver better connectivity for use in autonomous cars, utilities, power stations, the national health service and many others.

There is no suggestion that Huawei is directly connected to Imagination, or its ultimate owners – the state-owned China Reform investment fund.

The call for evidence comes a day after EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager warned that companies across the EU – many of which have been or are being pushed the brink of bankruptcy by the economic effects of Coronavirus – are vulnerable to takeover from Chinese companies.

In the UK, the Treasury is considering plans for the state to take ownership stakes in thousands of businesses, to prevent mass bankruptcies of businesses unable or unwilling to take on extra debt.

The situation is delicate as many EU countries are gratefully accepting donations of virus-fighting equipment from China. The country, which appears to be “first in – first out”, is now emerging from a crisis from which it bore the initial brunt.

Neither Imagination Technologies, nor its owner China Reform returned the BBC’s request for comment.

  • Having sex with Mahama landed me a big job at least – Victoria Hamah shades Facebook user

You know what they say, “the internet never forgets”

At every given moment, social media users particularly seize the opportunity to remind political actors who have been caught in one scandal or the other.

The latest on the “bill” is Victoria Hamah, a former Deputy Minister in Charge of Communication under the Mahama administration.

It almost a decade since Victoria Hammah has been sacked after she was recorded allegedly saying she would stay in politics until she has made $1m.

But is still fresh on the minds of some Ghanaians. A harmless facebook post by Ms. Hamah yesterday drew lot of disparging comments referring her to the 8-year-old incident with some even claiming she had sex with the former president Mahama before landing the Deputy Communication Minister job.

“Nobody in NDC is rejoicing at the Coronavirus pandemic; as a matter of fact we are praying to God for all this to be over so we can vote massively to change your government.” Ms. Hamah posted on her facebook wall

But this drew  derogatory comments from one user particular user by name Pageege Isaac who commented “To come and continue your sex for ministerial appointment ryt. how many times did Mahama had sex with you?”

Victoria who is obviously unhappy with the comment replied ” Your father had sex with your mother to have you, what did it gain your mother, just asking 😋 . Go and ask your mother OK😋. It didn’t produce a child as useless as you unlike your poor mother it got me a very big Job😂😂😂😜. If you looked as good as JM, you can have me for free and unlimited access

  • Coronavirus: Austria reopens some shops as lockdown eased

Austria is to reopen thousands of shops on Tuesday as it seeks to ease restrictions brought in to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Garden centres, DIY stores and small shops will open as part of a step-by-step plan to restart the economy.

However strict social distancing rules remain in place, with people urged to stay at home as much as possible.

It comes as some other European countries ease restrictions imposed over the pandemic.

Spain has allowed some citizens to return to work and Denmark is reopening schools for younger children.

Italy – Europe’s hardest-hit country with more than 20,000 deaths – will allow a narrow range of firms to resume operations on Tuesday.

However, French President Emmanuel Macron has extended the lockdown there for another four weeks until 11 May.

In a televised address, he said the current restrictions had slowed the virus but not beaten it.

The World Health Organization has welcomed the slowing down of infections in some European countries but warned against lifting restrictions too early.

Director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has cautioned that easing measures too quickly “could lead to a deadly resurgence”.

Austria was one of the first European countries to follow neighbouring Italy in imposing strict lockdown measures about a month ago and the government says it has managed to flatten the curve of new infections. It has so far reported about 14,000 cases and 368 deaths.

Last week, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz unveiled plans to gradually lift restrictions.

In an open letter to the country on Saturday, he said he wanted to “come out of this crisis as quickly as possible and fight for every job in Austria”.

From Monday, shops under 400 sq m (4,300 sq ft) in size will be allowed to reopen along with hardware stores and garden centres.

Larger shops, shopping centres and hairdressers are due to be reopened from 1 May while restaurants and hotels could reopen from mid-May if health conditions allow, Mr Kurz has said.

In his address on Monday evening, President Macron said the outbreak in France was “beginning to steady… (and) hope is returning”.

The daily number of deaths rose slightly taking the country’s total to just under 15,000.

“The eleventh of May will be the start of a new phase,” Mr Macron said. “It will be progressive and the rules can be adapted according to our results.”

He said schools would gradually reopen after the new extension but restaurants would stay closed and there could be no festivals until mid-July. He said the most vulnerable people should remain in isolation even after the rules were eased.

Spain’s health ministry said on Monday that the daily number of deaths had dipped slightly, with 517 reported in the previous 24 hours, compared with 619 announced on Sunday. The official death toll is now 17,489.

The number of new infections continues to fall, with the total now at 169,496.

“We are still far from victory, from the moment when we will recover normality in our lives,” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned over the weekend.

“We are all keen to go back out on the streets… but our desire is even greater to win the war and prevent a relapse,” he added.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said last week that the lockdown would continue until 3 May, but that a few types of shops and businesses would be allowed to reopen on Tuesday. They would include bookshops, stationers and shops selling children’s clothes.

In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel will hold talks on Wednesday with regional leaders on how to exit the country’s lockdown. Germany has recorded more than 130,000 cases and 3,194 deaths.

  • India extends coronavirus lockdown until May 3

In a live televised address early on Tuesday morning, India’s prime minister extended the nationwide lockdown until May 3 to contain Novel Coronavirus pandemic.

Narendra Modi assured that in the second phase of the lockdown, certain services would be relaxed somewhat in certain areas.

“We have taken strict measures since the start. We had started our screening process, even before the first case was reported and had announced a 21-day countrywide lockdown before the country touched a 500 cases mark. The nation did not wait for the problem to grow big before taking measures,” said Modi.

He also emphasized that the interests of migrant workers and the poor would be kept in mind this time. He said the government was assisting in seasonal crop harvests which were delayed due to lockdown.

Despite the lockdown, India is seeing a surge in cases. The country crossed the 10,000 mark on Monday. According to data compiled by the U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University, India has so far reported 10,453 COVID-19 cases and 358 deaths.

  • Israel’s coronavirus cases top 11,800, 117 dead

The number of Coronavirus cases in Israel has topped 11,800, with 117 deaths, the Health Ministry said Tuesday.

In the last 24 hours, one person died and 282 people tested positive for COVID-19, raising the total number of cases to 11,868, including 181 who are in critical condition.

As many as 9,459 tests were administered during the said period.

Meanwhile, at least 2,000 patients have recovered from the virus so far.

The government has taken a number of steps to stem the spread of the virus, including closing all educational institutions and banning gatherings of more than 10 in open or closed public areas.

All businesses except supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations and banks remain shut since March 15.

Tel Aviv also banned the entry of foreign citizens except those with Israeli residency.

Since appearing in China last December, the virus has spread to at least 185 countries and regions, according to figures compiled by U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.

More than 1.92 million cases have been reported worldwide with an excess of 119,700 deaths and over 457,500 recoveries.

  • Russia’s small businesses buckling under virus restrictions

When President Vladimir Putin announced a paid holiday for the month of April to keep Russians home and prevent the coronavirus from spreading, many small business owners braced themselves.

How would they keep to the president’s promise of paying employees while they were shut down?

The small furniture manufacturing company where Natalia Garnova works has told her she will receive only half her monthly salary of 40,000 rubles ($544).

“I do not know how I will feed my children tomorrow!” the 41-year-old told AFP.

“This month, we have no orders… We already know that several people will be laid off.”

Lawmakers are due Tuesday to table legislation to help small and medium-sized businesses, but for many it could already be too late.

According to the Center for Strategic Research, a think tank close to the government, about a third of companies it surveyed forced employees to take leave without pay from the first week of the non-working period.

Nearly half of the thousand companies surveyed reduced wages, 16 percent announced redundancies and nine percent anticipated bankruptcy this year.

The non-working period was initially introduced by Putin on March 28 and extended on April 2 to the end of the month as part of tightening measures to slow COVID-19.

Russia on Monday reported 2,558 new infections, its biggest daily increase to date, bringing its total tally to 18,328 cases and 148 deaths.

The fallout could see the number of unemployed rise from 2.5 to 8 million this year, according to Russia’s Audit Chamber.

    Difficult to survive

Some self-employed Russians, like 29-year-old personal trainer Olga Novikova, have already seen their incomes vanish.

“The longer it lasts, the more difficult it becomes to survive,” she told AFP.

She cannot give lessons in gyms since they were closed earlier this month.

Coaching online is not an attractive option, Novikova says, because of competition from any number of free alternatives.

For Russians whose purchasing power has already been hit over recent years, the economic situation looks set to become even more precarious.

The outlook is especially bleak for the nearly two-thirds of Russians who according to a survey last year by the Levada polling agency, have no savings.

In an effort to support entrepreneurs, the government has rolled out tax cuts and offered deferred payments. The central bank has released funds for banks so they can offer cheap loans to small businesses.

But Igor Nikolayev, director of the Institute for Strategic Analysis of FBK Grant Thornton Russia, said the “government measures should be on a bigger scale and better targeted.

“There should be direct support for the citizens, those who suffer most from the situation,” he added.

    Economic crisis fears

“The state has money,” he said, citing the sovereign wealth fund worth $160 billion, which the Kremlin seems reluctant to tap.

“If a company has no income, how can wages be paid? They must be subsidised,” Nikolayev said.

Without government intervention, Russia faces an economic crisis similar to the one that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, he said.

“GDP fell by 14.5 percent in 1992. The Russian economy could fall to the same level,” he added.

On April 8, Putin asked regional governors to introduce coronavirus measures that would not do unnecessary damage to the economy.

Beauty salons and hairdressers reopened in the Far East the next day. But Top Gun, a barber shop in Vladivostok run by Denis Lukoyanov, is still struggling.

With only one customer allowed at a time, keeping afloat is “almost impossible,” he told AFP.

Political scientist Konstantin Kalachev said the situation is perilous for the president, who is tasked with safeguarding the health of Russians as well as the economy.

If the coronavirus fallout turns out to be worse than expected, Kalachev said, “Putin will be seen as the one who

    misjudged the situation.”

  • Trump defends handling of coronavirus outbreak in US

U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out Monday at weeks of criticism over his handling of the Novel Coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Speaking at a White House coronavirus task force briefing, Trump said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a travel notice on Jan. 6 for Wuhan, the Chinese city where the virus originated last December, due to its spread.

He recalled that the CDC also issued a Level I travel health notice on Jan. 11 and there was not a single confirmed case then.

“People wanted me to act. I am supposed to close down the greatest economy?” he said.

Trump said that on Jan. 17, the CDC began implementing public health entry screenings at three major airports that received a great volume of passengers from Wuhan at his instruction.

“You remember what happened, when I did act. I was criticized by [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi, Sleepy Joe. In fact, I was called xenophobic,” he said, referring to presidential candidate Joe Biden.

The first case of COVID-19 in the U.S. was reported on Jan. 21 and the CDC activated an operation center in response to the outbreak. The first death occurred on Feb. 29 in Washington state.

“On Jan. 31, I issued a travel restriction on China. Nobody died and I issued. You cannot get earlier than that,” he said. “I got brutalized over it by the press because I was way too early.”

On March 11, Trump announced a ban on travelers to the U.S. from Europe during a televised address to the nation as part of measures to stem the spread of the virus.

Trump has long been criticized by Democrats and several media outlets for his “poor” handling of the outbreak, with some citizens claiming the president has the blood of the people who died from the virus on his hands.

“Everything we did was right,” he added.

As of Monday evening, more than 23,600 people in the U.S. have died from the novel coronavirus and more than 581,000 have been infected, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The U.S. is the country with the highest number of cases and deaths worldwide.

The virus has spread to 185 countries, infecting nearly 2 million people since first emerging in Wuhan, China late last year. The global death toll is nearly 120,000, while about 450,000 people have recovered.

  • Coronavirus: Prophetess invents multi-purpose hand washing stand

In the fight against the novel coronavirus, regular hand washing has been recommended by medical experts as needful and combative. It is for this reason that a woman of God named Prophetess Mercy Coffie has designed a hand washing stand to aid in effective and proper hand washing.

She has noticed that hand washing stand has been ignored by many yet it plays a very significant role in the cleaning of hands. Her passion to solve societal problems and to make life easier for people motivated her to see this through.

The stand was designed to support and keep the hand washing materials in good position for easier washing and cleaning of hands.

The well designed stand has a considerable height to avoid the bending of waist and knees which could be a discomfort to many, especially, the aged, and people with back and waist pains. The stand provides an area for a veronica bucket or gallon, tissue roll, a bowl, liquid soap and a hand sanitizer. She has observed that these materials are mostly placed on tables or, other flat surfaces.

These surfaces can be easily contaminated and could result in cross infection. The stand has been well-fitted against strong winds and prevents the materials from falling to the ground which could have been the case for tables and other weak surfaces. The container for the hand sanitizer was provided to be filled and refilled, and users can easily press the container with the back of the palm to release the liquid. The tissue roll has been placed on a handle and covered, to avoid dust and other unwanted material from contaminating it.

The prophetess is encouraging men and women of God to follow suit in a bid to create employment opportunities for the youth in the country by finding Ghanaian solutions to Ghanaian problems.

She is hopeful, that, the stand would offer the necessary assistance in the fight against the coronavirus through effective hand washing.

She has donated a number of these stands to some institutions and a lot more stands are being donated.

  • Kobina Ansah’s ‘Emergency Wedding’ postponed indefinitely

If there was any time Kobina Ansah’s tagline for his play, Emergency Wedding, was relevant, then that time will be now ~ Man has his timelines but God has the clock.

The Covid19 pandemic has brought life to a halt and it is no news how much it is distorting the timelines of many. It, thus, comes as no surprise that the playwright’s much-publicized play, Emergency Wedding, has been postponed.

Kobina Ansah is credited for plays such as I Want To Sue God and The Boy Called A Girl among others. His theatre outfit, Scribe Productions, started preparations for Emergency Wedding last year. It has, however, become expedient for the event to be rescheduled due to the safety and health of audience.

“Above all other things, the health and safety of our patrons are of utmost priority to us and we know this decision will be of great benefit to us all,” the press release from Scribe Productions read.

For many fans of Scribe Productions, this comes as a bombshell because the play was scheduled to happen only a few weeks from now. That notwithstanding, the playwright assured that the play will definitely come on later in the year and that all tickets bought are still valid.

“We all never saw this coming. New dates will, however, be announced as soon as the situation subsides,” Kobina Ansah concluded.
