  • Morocco to free over 5000 prisoners to curb spread of coronavirus

King Mohammed VI on Sunday pardoned more than 5,000 inmates to prevent the new coronavirus from contaminating Moroccan prisons, the Justice Ministry announced.

The monarch “granted a pardon to 5,654 inmates and ordered to take all necessary measures to strengthen the protection of inmates in prisons,” the ministry said in a statement.

The pardoned detainees were selected according to “their age, state of health, length of detention and good conduct,” according to the text.

Their release will take place “in stages”, taking into account “the exceptional circumstances associated with the state of health emergency and the precautions required”.

The ministry does not specify whether detainees of the “Hirak”, a protest movement that has agitated Morocco in 2016-2017, are among those pardoned.

Morocco, which on Sunday recorded 960 cases of contamination with 66 deaths and 69 recoveries, took drastic measures by closing its borders and declaring a state of health emergency in mid-March to limit the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In this country of 35 million inhabitants known for its overcrowded prisons (an incarceration rate of 232 per 100,000 inhabitants), human rights defenders recently called for the release of “political prisoners” as well as other priority categories of detainees (on remand, vulnerable or at the end of their sentences).

For its part, the prison administration has taken protective measures for its staff, reinforced health measures, reduced visiting rights and suspended all activities involving outside actors.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called on 25 March for the urgent release of detainees around the world to prevent the pandemic from “wreaking havoc” in these closed, often overcrowded places. Her appeal was followed by several countries.

  • Senegal extends state of emergency for coronavirus

Senegalese President Macky Sall has extended for 30 days the state of emergency introduced throughout the country in response to the new coronavirus, the state media reported.

The state of emergency first announced by the head of state on 23 March is accompanied by a curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. (same hours GMT).

The public TV news presenter read out the extension decree, dated 3 April, on Saturday evening.

The state of emergency allows the authorities to regulate or prohibit the movement of goods and people and gatherings, temporarily close public places and meeting places, ban the movement of planes and boats, decide on entry and exit points, or place people under house arrest.

The authorities did indeed impose many of these measures, in some cases before the state of emergency was declared. They prohibited gatherings and collective prayers, banned inter-city traffic and suspended almost all air traffic. Senegal has so far refrained from establishing containment. It would represent a considerable challenge in this poor country where a large part of the population lives from day to day.

The Ministry of Health announced on Sunday three new cases of contamination, bringing the total to 222 since March 2. Two people died, 82 are cured according to the official count.

King Of Accra also alleged that at the time they were working together, Jayso, another producer who was working with Sarkodie back then also tried to sue the BET award winner.

Well, it turns these claims of King Of Accra are ones Sarkodie is not entirely happy about.

In posts sighted on his Twitter/Facebook pages, he used a very popular Akan proverb which states “Ntesuo kokoo wo nipa anum nso yaa na gyae na ya te fitaa.. daakye asem nti” to make a very simple but clear message.

From our interpretation, what Sarkodie sought to imply is that even though he may have some serious revelations to make, he is compelled to hold back onto them for posterity seek.

Funny enough, many people suggested earlier that this tweet was a subtle reaction to all the drama that happened in relation to the legendary Zapp Mallet but it turns out that it is not really the case.

Anyway, if you have no idea who King of Accra is, he is one of the producers who worked with Sarkodie in 2009 till around 2015.

He produced the “You Already Know” single off the Sarkology album and also produced the hit singles “Daabi and This Game” for Sarkodie.

  • Police arrest 6 engaging in sex party during lockdown

Six persons who were engaging in an orgy without recourse to the coronavirus lockdown have been arrested and are set to be arraigned before court.

According to the dailymail.co.uk, Spanish police found six people allegedly having an orgy at a brothel in Madrid during the coronavirus lockdown.

Police in the Spanish capital confirmed they found six people in a flat suspected of being a brothel taking part in a sex party.

According to local media, several neighbours in the building called the police to complain about people going in and out of a flat and playing loud music.

Reports said the police went into the flat on Saturday and found four women and two men naked in a corridor with three bedrooms.

The local authorities also found alcoholic drinks and cigarette butts all over the flat, local media reported.

The police reportedly suspect the house was functioning as a brothel as only one of the women was registered as a tenant in the house.

Officers broke up the orgy in the Tetuan area of the city and have filed reports against them.

Reports claim that local authorities filed a complaint against the tenant for breaking the regulations against noise pollution.

The other five guests were also reported for breaking the quarantine declared by the national government to stop the spread of COVID-19.

    No arrests have been reported.

  • Speaker cries over Sam Georges castigating letter

Rt. Hon. Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, Speaker of Parliament, has expressed sadness about the honourable member for Ningo-Prapram constituency, for indicating that parliamentary sittings are a waste of his precious time.

He told the parliamentarians that Samuel Nartey George had stated that parliamentary business in the wake of the global Coronavirus pandemic was just to approve loans, something he, Sam George, does not want to be part of.

“I inform you with deep regret that I have received a castigating letter from the Hon. Sam George MP for Ningo-Prampram Constituency which says he cannot attend the Sitting of this House again because sittings are just a waste of his time as the sittings during this period are only to approve loans.

“This is sad,” Mr. Speaker said.

Sam George in his letter to the Speaker and the Leadership of the House of Parliament indicated that Ghana sits on tenterhooks as the novel Coronavirus ravage the human race and parliamentarians are not immune from this global pandemic.

He said: “The risks we are subjecting ourselves to must be worth it. I am prepared to come to work every day from morning to night if it is about working with the Executive to deal with the pandemic at hand. I am prepared to go the extra mile if it is work that would protect the citizens and put the Executive in a better stead to protect the Republic.”

“What I am not prepared to do sir, is to take risk that is needless. I am not prepared to risk exposure to the virus by coming to Parliament every day just to come and work on bills that are of no emergency nature and do not relate to the coronavirus or to come and sit and approve loans and tax waivers for private business interests, many of which are foreign.

“It is my considered belief Rt. Hon Speaker, that the august House of Parliament is failing to exercise its truly intended mandate in crisis times like this. I hold the strongest conviction that we are pandering whilst the flames that may engulf the state are being stoked.

“In the past two weeks, the House has met and deliberated on several issues. Top among them is the Imposition of Restrictions Bill 2020 and the granting and approval of a number of commercial loan agreements. None of these deals with the coronavirus pandemic directly,” Hon. Samuel Nartey George wrote.

The MP added: “For once, let us have our priorities right.”

  • Coronavirus: Trump to defy ‘voluntary’ advice for Americans to wear masks

US President Donald Trump has said he will not wear a face mask despite new medical guidance advising Americans to do so.

He could not see himself greeting “presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens” in the Oval Office while wearing one, he said.

He stressed that the guidance released on Friday was “voluntary”.

“You do not have to do it,” he said. “I don’t think I’m going to be doing it.”

The guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the government’s public health advisory agency, came as the US reported at least 270,473 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with nearly 7,000 deaths.

Until now, US health authorities had said that only the sick, or those caring for patients of coronavirus, should wear masks, but newer studies suggest that covering up one’s face is important to prevent inadvertent transmission.

“From recent studies we know that the transmission from individuals without symptoms is playing a more significant role in the spread of the virus than previously understood,” Mr Trump said on Friday.

However, he told reporters after announcing the CDC’s new guidance: “I just don’t want to do it myself.”

“Sitting in the Oval Office… I somehow don’t see it for myself.”

Americans are now advised to use clean cloth or fabric to cover their faces whilst in public. Officials have stressed that medical masks remain in short supply, and should be left for healthcare workers.

The guidance comes as the number of cases globally climbs past one million.

India has reported its biggest single-day jump in new coronavirus cases, with 601 in the past day representing a 26% rise, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The country now has 3,082 cases and 86 deaths, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.

The surge in cases has been linked to a religious gathering held at a New Delhi mosque in March, a senior health ministry official said. People from across India and overseas had gathered for the event.

So far, 647 cases have been directly linked to the gathering, said Lav Agarwal, a senior official of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. He added that the cases have been identified and isolated across 14 states and union territories

The Delhi government said earlier this week that it will be taking strict action against those responsible for organizing the gathering.

The preachers representing churches in Makueni country in eastern Kenya, say faith is the “best way to fight the unseen enemy”.

They want to be allowed to hold Sunday services in open grounds, while adhering to the proposed one-metre distance between people to prevent infection.

The government has banned public gatherings and police officers have been enforcing the ban.

One of the pastors, Nicholas Kyule, was quoted by Citizen TV as saying that the church was the “best place for hope and resilience” during this time.

Another, Titus Uswii, was quoted in the Star Newspaper as saying that the country “may be involved in a futile exercise” as long as churches remain closed.

The Kenyan government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on 27 March, but exempted those in what it termed “essential services”, which included health workers, security officers, the media, food dealers and transporters among others.

  • Everton, Tottenham get boost in Mohammed Kudus pursuit

Tottenham and Everton have been handed a massive boost in their hot race to sign Ghana teenage prodigy Mohammed Kudus as the hugely talented playmaker can now get an automatic work permit to play in England.

The 19-year-old, who is Ghana full international, has attracted interest from clubs from all the top five leagues in Europe – England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France.

His explosive form for Danish top-flight side Nordsjaelland this season attracted clubs to his talent which has resulted in the big chase for his signature in the upcoming transfer window.

Tottenham and Everton are the English clubs among the more than ten teams in Europe seeking to sign the powerful midfielder but stringent work permit rules threatened to scupper their plans.

But British lawyers have now revealed that the Ghana teenage prodigy will qualify for an automatic work permit because of lenient conditions for talented U20 players.

Players without EU passports need to play 75% of matches of their senior national team matches two years before applying for the permit and their country must be among top 50 in the world.

But talented U20 players need just one year of 75% of matches of the senior national team matches of a country among the top 50 in the world, to qualify for an automatic work permit.

With Ghana currently ranked 46th in the world and having played both matches of the Black Stars in the past one year, Kudus would qualify for an automatic UK work permit to play in England.

This is a major boost for Tottenham and Everton as they will not fully enter the race to grab the player who has been one of the best players in the Danish top-flight this season.

This led to his maiden call-up for the Ghana senior team and he justified his invitation in his first appearance for the Black Stars when he scored a marvelous goal against South Africa in November last year in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Kudus has emerged a prime target for German Bundesliga sides Borussia Dortmund and Leipzig while French sides Marseille and Lyon as well as Italian club Inter Milan.

Tottenham and Everton have done well to develop young talents into first-team stars over the years and they will be hoping to do the same with Kudus if the transfer goes through.

As for the player, he might be tempted to move to England because of the huge popularity of the English Premier League in his native Ghana.

He will know that a top class youth setup and a first-team manager like Jose Mourinho or Carlo Ancelotti could help him fulfill his potential in future.

The highly-rated midfielder can play as forward as well. However, he is at his best as an attacking midfielder.

He has been in fine form since moving to Denmark in 2017, and made 26 appearances last season to help his side finish sixth in the Danish Superliga.

He shot to prominence after excelling at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017 in India and was the star of the Black Satellites team at the Africa Youth Championship in Niger in February last year.
