  • Coronavirus: Stop the prank calls – Information Minister warns

Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has revealed that some people have hijacked the Covid-19 emergency lines to make ”prank calls”.

According to him, “some people dial the line just to test if it is working” and others call to make jokes; hence depriving people who need help from reaching the authorities.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, government has advised Ghanaians who may reveal symptoms of the virus or have people who fall under such category to contact the emergency lines.

Such persons are to dial 112 and receive necessary tips to ensure they don’t get others infected. Though 112 is to help curtail the spread of the virus, some unscrupulous persons are misusing the line.

In an interview with host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah disclosed an overwhelming number of prank calls from January 2020 saying about 1.8 million calls were all made in jest.

”When they call and you pick up, they will tell you they were testing the number. Chairman, that is 99.16% . . .these were prank calls,” he told the host.

He expressed utter disgust over the behaviour of some Ghanaians who do not see the seriousness of the emergency lines.

“Here is the problem! If you call because you want to test the line, it means you’re depriving people who really need help from reaching the emergency services,” he pointed out.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah is therefore pleading with people “joking with the 112 to stop immediately . . . in the 112 database, they had recorded 1.9 million calls from January to I think last week. Out of the 1.9 million phone calls, 1.8 are prank calls”.

”If you call more than once and it’s a prank call, we will block your line. What blocking your line means the day you will be in dire need of the emergency line, we won’t pick up. We appeal to you to stop the prank calls to give opportunity to infected persons so that we can take their samples for testing to avoid everybody rushing to the hospitals,’ he advised.

  • Soldiers in doctored social media videos are not on Covid-19 operation Ghana Armed Forces

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has said videos trending on social media that sought to suggest that some soldiers on the Operation Covid Safety were manhandling citizens are fake.

Operation Covid Safety is the joint security task force enforcing the lockdown in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area and Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area aimed at stemming the spread of the coronavirus disease.

A statement issued Tuesday evening by the public relations directorate of the GAF said the videos are doctored and re-cycled videos of past events some which did not even originate in Ghana.

A screenshot from one of the viral videos

“It would be recalled that on Saturday, 28th March 2020, TV 3 News carried a news item purportedly showing the arrival of troops in Kumasi to ensure residents conform to the partial lockdown directives by the President. The purported recording featured a voice which issued threats to residents of the Ashanti Region of intended brutalities by the Military.

“This reportage, after our investigation, was found to be a doctored video. The said troops were in fact, part of a disinfection exercise which took place recently in Accra but had no bearing to the restrictions programme currently underway,” the statement signed by GAF Director of Public Relations, Colonel Eric Aggrey-Quashie, said.

  • Ghana Armed Forces cover up for soldiers involved in brutalities

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) say military men involved in brutalities of innocent civilians who go contrary to the stay at home directive by the president are not members of Operation COVID Safety.

According to them in a statement signed by Colonel E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director of Public Relations, videos circulating on social media depicting such acts are doctored and re-cycled videos of past events some which did not even originate in Ghana.

“It would be recalled that on Saturday, 28th March 2020, TV 3 News carried a news item purportedly showing the arrival of troops in Kumasi to ensure residents conform to the partial lockdown directives by the President. • Bawumia donates 500 cedis each to ‘Ejisu’ Kayaye

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has donated 500 Cedis to each of the stranded Kayaye (head porters) who were stopped at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region on their way to the Northern Region.

The head porters, numbering about 76, had attempted to flee from Accra back to their hometowns in the wake of the President’s order for a partial lockdown in the Capital City and other parts of the country, but their journey back home was unsuccessful as it fell within the lockdown time on Monday.

Their attempted mass crossover to the north was seen as a threat to stop the spread of the virus in the country, and they were thus stopped from proceeding by security officials, who returned them to Accra.

Despite the temporary provision of shelter for them by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, many have raised concerns over the plight of the Kayayes under the current circumstance, as business activities in the heart of Accra have come to a halt.

It is in response to this that the Vice President has donated 500 Cedis to each of them to ameliorate their plight during the period of the partial lockdown.

The donation was made on behalf of the Vice President by the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama. She was accompanied by Dr. Sagare Bambangi, MP for Walewale and Mustafa Ussif, CEO of the National Service Secretariat.

Meanwhile, the Vice President has also urged all Ghanaians to continue to observe the preventive measures of regular washing of hands with soap under running water, while they observe the partial lockdown at their respective homes.

“While we stay at home to prevent the spread, let us continue to adhere strictly to all the preventive measures to avoid the spread of the virus,” he urged.

“Let us continue to wash our hands regularly with soap under running water, as well as constantly use alcohol-based hand sanitizers to sanitize our hands. We shall overcome, inshaa Allah.”

  • Wimbledon cancellation seems inevitable as emergency meetings held

A series of emergency meetings is under way to decide whether Wimbledon can go ahead this year.

The All England Club says a final decision is yet to be made, but the cancellation of the Championships for the first time since the Second World War now seems inevitable.

The Wimbledon Championships are due to run for two weeks from Monday 29 June.

The French Open has already been pushed back four months to late September because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I guess everyone’s been waiting on it,” Britain’s seven time Grand Slam doubles champion Jamie Murray told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“It’s obviously the next big event in the tennis calendar that’s still on the calendar for the moment.”

BBC Sport understands a decision to abandon this year’s grass court season is likely be made in conjunction with three governing bodies – the Lawn Tennis Association, the Association of Tennis Professionals and the Women’s Tennis Association – within the next 48 hours.

The All England Club admitted last week that a postponement would not be “without significant risk and difficulty,” and Murray says there are many practical reasons for that.

“I think for them, it’s difficult to move the tournament back because you’re running into other tournaments that are for the moment still on the schedule,” he explained.

“And also just things like daylight to host the event. Each week that passes, you get less and less light to play the tournament. And obviously they play until nine and 10 o’clock each night at Wimbledon.”

The All England Club is confident it will be able to refund ticket and debenture holders through the insurance policies it has in place.

But tennis will be denied its annual chance to showcase the sport in the UK, and to encourage people to take to the courts.

The preceding grass court tournaments in Nottingham, Birmingham, Eastbourne and at Queen’s Club in London will also be affected.

There is likely to be no professional tennis played anywhere until at least 13 July, which leaves players like Murray in the same boat as everyone else.

“I’m just at home, taking the necessary precautions, and trying to stay as active as I can,” the Scot continued.

“It’s different. We’re used to being on the road all the time, used to being in different cities every week, and you kind of become institutionalised to that.

“So even when I’m at events, come Friday, Saturday, when you’re starting to play for big prizes, your mind’s kind of like, ready to go to the next event because that’s just what you’ve been programmed to do.”

  • Foreigners who tested positive for coronavirus in Tamale rejected by their countries

The Northern Region Minister, Salifu Saeed, has revealed that government is facing difficulties in repatriating the ten foreign nationals who tested positive for Coronavirus to their countries.

The Ghana Health Service on Sunday, March 29 announced that the Northern Region capital of Tamale had recorded 10 cases of the novel infectious disease.

The cases, eight Guineans and two Burkinabes who traveled from Burkina Faso and Togo through unapproved routes to Ghana, had been kept under state mandatory quarantine since Saturday, March 28.

The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, in an interview on New Day on TV3 Monday revealed that government was preparing to repatriate the foreigners to their countries for treatment.

But speaking on Tamale-based television station Sagani, the Northern Regional Minister said, “Their countries are refusing to take them back”.

Some 36 health workers at the Tamale Teaching Hospital who came in contact with the patients have also been put on mandatory quarantine.

Meanwhile, one of the patients, a female has reportedly escaped.

The patient scaled the walls of the Guest House where they were under quarantine, the Minister revealed.

“The patient scaled the walls at the blind side of the security and escaped.”

The Security has commenced a manhunt for her.

    Border Patrols

Salifu Saeed, who is also Chairman of the Northern Regional Security Council, revealed that borders in the north are being patrolled by the military and other security agencies.

  • FDA advises public to stay away from self-testing kits on COVID-19

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says it has neither registered nor recognised any rapid diagnoses test (RDT) kits for self-testing in the country.

It said not even the World Health Organisation (WHO) had approved any RDT for use and, therefore, cautioned the public to be wary of any RDT kits.

Speaking in an interview in Accra today, the Head of Medical Devices Department of the FDA, Mr Joseph Yaw-Bernie Bennie, said for now, only the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test was the recommended one and that was what the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research in Accra and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Kumasi were using.

    Request for registration

He said currently, over 100 companies and institutions had approached the FDA to allow them to bring in RDTs from China, South Korea and other places with one of them requesting to be allowed for local mass production of the RDT kits in partnership with a foreign partner.

“Since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country, a lot of people have made enquiries and the possibility of bringing in the RDT kits for testing on the COVID-19. Ordinarily, it is a good thing because the WHO is recommending that we should do mass testing.

“But we do not want to do test and give false positives and false negatives. So, there is the need to make sure that the tool you are using for testing is correct,” Mr Bennie explained.

He added that the COVID-19 was a novel virus which the scientist community was not very conversant with, “and almost everybody relies on good test cases.”

Mr Bennie expressed concern that there was a lot of information being churned out, most of which was not correct, adding that Ghana was doing a lot of international collaboration to ensure that whatever the Ghanaian scientists were doing was good.

“Let me tell you that as of now that we are talking, WHO has not come out with any pre-qualified RDT that we can run with because it is not available as of now,” he said giving the assurance that if there was any RDT, Ghana would have been the first to go for them.

Mr Bennie said the RDT kits were available, but explained that they had limitations and that it was not advisable to patronise them because even after using it, “you still have to go for a confirmation test using the PCR, which gives precise results as to whether the person has it or not.”

He said while the PCR gave accurate information of the presence of the virus in a person, the current RDT kits available gave an indication and, therefore, required a confirmation test as to whether the person had it or not.

    No registration

“So the Ministry of Health says for now, it is only PCR and so now, the ministry says we should not register any RDT for now,” he stated, adding that things could change in the course of time.

Mr Bennie, therefore, asked Ghanaians to tread cautiously and remain calm while those mandated to find solutions too play their part, adding that when it becomes necessary for the use of the RDT based on the recommendations from the WHO, it would be done.

He stated that the current state of the RDT would create anxiety and fear since the kits could not give full confirmation of the virus in people.

Mr Bennie said the use of RDT could be counterproductive since it could indicate negative when in actual fact the person would be positive and the vice versa.

    Observation of protocols

He mentioned that for now, the testing was restricted to only suspected cases and not mass testing as an option and advised Ghanaians to rather concentrate more on the frequent hand washing under running water and the observation of all the protocols.

Additionally, he recommended that people should observe the social distance the President announced and when it was not pressing, people should limit movement, “since we are told that the virus does not move, people move it. We stop moving, the virus stops moving, the virus dies.”

  • Coronavirus: 2547 people tested in Ghana as at March 30

Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare has revealed that tests have been conducted on 2547 people so far in Ghana

Dr. Nsiah Asare noted that as at Monday, March 30, 2020 tests conducted at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) in the capital as well as the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research into Tropical Medicine (KCCR) confirmed the tally.

He made the revelation on Peace FM’s Morning Show Tuesday morning; adding that the 152 positive cases of Coronavirus recorded were from the total 2547 tested.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu has indicated that 31 persons out of the 152 reported positive cases have recovered from the coronavirus and have been discharged pending observation from their homes.

According to Mr Agyeman Manu, this shows that the cases are being well managed in the country, stressing that all five persons who have died were aged and had an underlying illness.

Some parts of the country, namely Greater Accra Region and Ashanti Region have entered day two of a lockdown directed by President Akufo-Addo as a containment measure against the rapid spread of the disease.

  • COVID-19: New Energy promotes tippy taps for hand washing

Some residents of Gunayili and Kamonayili in the Tamale and Sagnarigu Assemblies respectively have been sensitised on the use of tippy taps for effective hand washing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Youth in the two communities were also trained on how to install tippy taps so that they would also teach others in the communities to help adopt the tippy taps to facilitate hand washing under running water.

New Energy, a non-governmental organisation operating in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector, undertook this initiative in the two communities to contribute to national efforts at suppressing the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Mrs Nayilatu Iddrisu, Executive Director of New Energy, who led a team to visit some homes in the communities to undertake the initiative, said the materials needed to install tippy taps were readily available in the communities adding tippy taps were ideal for communities that did not have reliable supply of water hence promoting them in rural communities that did not have water.

Tippy tap is a hands-free device for hand washing that is especially designed for rural areas where there is no running water.

It is operated by a foot lever and thus reduces the chance for the transmission of pathogens as the user only touches a bar of soap suspended by a string.

Mrs Iddrisu said it cost less than GHc3 to fix tippy taps compared to Veronica Buckets, which most of the rural dwellers could not afford hence the decision to promote them for use by rural dwellers to keep them safe during this period of COVID-19 pandemic.

She said it was also more hygienic to use tippy tap as it was hands-free, which helped to prevent contamination compared to Veronica Buckets where people would have to touch the tap for the water to flow, which could be a source of infection.

She advised community members to adhere to precautionary measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Members of the communities expressed gratitude to New Energy for the initiative saying they would adopt the tippy taps to regularly wash their hands.

They, however, appealed to New Energy to support them with hand sanitisers to keep their hands clean when not at home to use the tippy taps.

  • COVID19: All 94 contacts of infected UG student test negative

The University of Ghana has announced that all 94 primary contacts of a student who tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) have tested negative after going through the mandatory 14-day period of quarantine.

The University says the contacts have since been bused to their destinations in and outside Accra.

It will be recalled that on March 13, 2020, an imported case of COVID-19 involving a non-resident student who returned to Ghana from an international trip was reported.

As a preventive and precautionary measure, lectures on all University of Ghana campuses, including clinical rotations and practicals, were suspended on March 15, 2020, by the University. This was followed by the closure of the University on March 16, 2020, in compliance with the directive by the President of the Republic of Ghana.

“Eighty-two (82) students and twelve (12) employees were identified as primary contacts. Seventy-four (74) of the primary contacts (students) who were present on campus at the time the University received information about the COVID 19 case, were asked to self-quarantine on campus to avoid the risk of community spread,” a public notice by the UG Registrar said.

“The remaining eight (8) who had already left the campus for their homes as well as the employees, were advised by the University of Ghana Emergency Response Team (UG-ERT) and the National Contact Tracing Team (NCTT) to self-quarantine at home.

The University admitted that it faced some initial logistical challenges before the contacts were relocated to a quarantine facility on campus which paved the way for easy management of the situation.

The students have since left quarantine for their homes in and outside Accra.

“With all the primary contacts (students and staff) testing negative for COVID-19 as certified by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, and with the closure of the University, buses were made available by the University of Ghana to convey students who live in and outside Accra to their various destinations, such as Obuasi, Kumasi, Tamale, Upper West, Cape Coast and Takoradi. They have also received the necessary counselling and education on precautionary measures with respect to COVID-19″.

Meanwhile, the affected student in isolation at a National Quarantine facility is reported to be making steady progress,” the statement said.

  • 31 returnees yet to be tested for coronavirus in the Eastern Region – GHS

Eastern Region is yet to record a case of Coronavirus after all but one of 28 suspected cases tested negative.

The result of the one is still pending, according to the Eastern Region Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Alberta Adjabeng Biritwum-Nyarko.

But she indicated that three out of four persons are under self-isolation after being traced as in the line of contact of one of the infected patients in Accra.

“Three of them have so far tested negative and the other one returned to Accra.”

Dr Biritwum-Nyarko said so far 33 persons from coronavirus-hit countries are residing in the region.

“Samples have been taken from two, which all tested negative.

“The rest are under observation and monitoring by the District Health Directorate in their respective districts of residence across the region and shall be tested soon.”

She urged residents to remain calm and that the Service will continue to intensify preparedness and response activities and heighten surveillance in the region.

She admonished residents to take the precautionary measures seriously.

  • 15 coronavirus checkpoints set up in Eastern region in response to Accra, Kumasi influx

Four municipalities in the Eastern region have set up at least 15 police checkpoints following fears of an increasing coronavirus transmission.

The checkpoints are within the Akuapem North, Akuapem South, New Juaben South Municipal Assemblies and Okere District Assembly, a joint statement read.

Political and health authorities within these areas said they have observed an increase in population as people flee Kasoa, Accra and Kumasi which have been locked down to contain the spread of the deadly virus that has killed five in Ghana.

Since the President, last Friday, announced the lockdown which took effect Monday, there have been several reports of people travelling outside the three affected areas.

There are concerns a mass movement could spread the virus even further as Ghana tries to deal with more than 100 cases of coronavirus.

In response, the municipal and district chief executives in these four areas in the Eastern region say, “public Health workers would be present at these check points to take temperatures of people and direct abnormal cases to the appropriate authorities.”

High temperature of more than 38 degrees Celsius could be a symptom of coronavirus infection.

  • Coronavirus: Jomoro Health Director appeals for PPEs

The Municipal Health Director of Jomoro Municipality in the Western Region, Mr. Sampson Joseph Kwame is appealing for Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) to help health facilities in the area to curb the spread of deadly Coronavirus pandemic.

A visit to some health facilities in the Municipality by GhanaWeb’s Western Regional Correspondent, Daniel Kaku confirmed that some health workers are not safe when it comes to the fight against the Coronavirus.

During the visit, some Nurses who spoke on condition of anonymity, complained bitterly that since the Coronavirus hit the country, they had not received any PPE.

They said they go to work unprotected, and this situation has put fears in them anytime they want to touch any patient that visit their designated facilities.

“Since this disease visited us in Ghana, we the nurses in Jomoro have not received any preventive items from anybody and we are afraid to touch any patient that comes to us for medical attention, we don’t have sanitizers, hand gloves and others, if care is not taking we will not come to work”, they lamented.

In a quick response by the Jomoro Municipal Health Director on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, Mr. Joseph Kwame admitted that his Directorate lacks some Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to be distributed to the health facilities in the area.

He disclosed that some health facilities had been provided with hand gloves.

On the issue of hand sanitizers, the Health Director said his outfit has not been provided.

“As we are speaking we don’t get hand sanitizers to buy from markets, we even went to Takoradi we did not get some to buy, there are shortages of hand gloves and we are trying to order some from Cote d’ivoire”, he emphasized.

Asking whether anybody has promised to donate the PPEs to the Directorate, Mr. Joseph Kwame revealed that the Member of Parliament (MP) and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area had promised him to deliver some of the PPEs to the Directorate.

On public education, the Health Director said his outfit was doing what it could to educate the residents about the Coronavirus.

He said although his outfit has been conducting some form of public education, he pleaded that his outfit needs resources to embark on Mass Media Education.

He, therefore appealed to radio stations in the Municipality to provide them with free airtime to educate the masses.

Government has established an Isolation Center at the Half Assini Government Hospital to cater for any suspected Coronavirus patient.

Information gathered from the Center indicates that though the Center has some PPEs management of the facility say they need more items such as goggles, face shields, gowns, medical masks, hand gloves and others.

  • Coronavrius lockdown: Four assemblies in Eastern region fight sudden influx

Some Assemblies in the Eastern Region are fighting the influx of people into the area as a result of the lockdown of Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi in a bid to deal with the coronavirus outbreak which has, so far, killed five Ghanaians out of the one hundred fifty-two cases confirmed so far.

The Juaben South, Akuapem North Municipal Assembly, Akuapem South and Okere Municipal Assemblies are among those who have been experiencing an influx of people since the lockdown took effect from Monday.

The four assemblies have, therefore, mounted roadblocks to ensure the people entering their jurisdiction are checked for the virus.

In a joint statement, the four Assemblies said there would be 15 checkpoints for that exercise.

The statement said both security and public health officials “would be present at these checkpoints to take the temperature of people and direct abnormal cases to the appropriate authorities.”

“We wish to assure all our stakeholders that these measures are taken in the interest of the people and citizens would only last for two weeks subject to review and that all the steps taken would help mitigate the impact of influx of people from other parts of the country that could possibly lead to the spread of the virus in the municipalities and district. It is therefore expected that as law-abiding citizens, we should cooperate with the assemblies to ensure that lives are protected and together, we shall overcome this too,” the Assemblies said.

Furthermore, the Assemblies have directed hotels and guest houses to provide them with the number of visitors they receive for the necessary action to be taken.

Also, food vendors, chop bars, restaurants have been ordered to only provide “take away” services.

Additionally, pubs and drinking spots have been ordered to shut down until further notice, while market women and traders at Adawso market, Asenema market, Agartha market, Koforidua Central market, Juaben Serwaa market, Zongo markets, and the beads market have been directed to run a rotational system in accordance with social distancing protocols.

  • Dog fight over Bolgatanga-Bawku road

The road fund under the erstwhile Mahama administration was branded “sick” by the Majority in Parliament after their counterparts used parliamentary privilege to blame the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for the delay in the construction of the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulimakom road.

Led by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba, the Minority MPs said the NPP government allowed works on the road to be stalled after their government exited power in 2016 during a debate of the House on Monday evening.

According to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP, there had been no single work on the road for the past three years because the current government found the need to prioritize other road projects at the expense of the 102.55km road.

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, replied that the road project, which was awarded on contract in September 2016 with work commencing in December the same year, was wrongfully charged to the Road Fund meant for routine maintenance and repair.

According to him, Road Fund has an average accrual of GH?1.2 billion, which money comes from four sources, including the fuel levy that accounts for about 94 percent, and that it was wrong on the part of the NDC government to have tied a project of over GH?622 million to the fund.

“It was non-starter, and even this project was sole-sourced. How can a major rehabilitation of a road of a length over 109 kilometres be sole-sourced?” he asked rhetorically and added the project was even fraught with problems.

“The worst of all, Mr Speaker, the government then had initially awarded the first 12 kilometres from Bolga on contract to a company called Mawoos, and when it became necessary to award the entire length of the project, they also named it Bolga-Bawku-Pulimakom which raises the issue of double payment and double counting,” he stated.

His Deputy, Kwabena Owusu-Aduomi said the NDC government “inappropriately positioned the road on a sick Road Fund” that was catering for many other things.

For him, the former administration could have best put the road on consolidated fund which could have provided enough funds to push the project to completion.

The House was debating the €139.4 million approved by the MPs to finance the construction of the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulimakom road project.

The amount is to be provided by HSBC Bank and KEW IPEX Bank GmbH.
Under the credit arrangement, the HSBC Bank Plc., United Kingdom will lend a total up to €68,000,000 and KEW IPEX Bank GmbH will also lend up to €72,000,000.

Government said good road infrastructure is a critical facilitator for rapid socio-economic development of the country through the improvement of accesses, reduction in travel times, congestion, vehicle operating costs and accidents.

The Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulimakom road starts from Bolgatanga Municipality as a dual carriage road for 2km and continues as a single carriageway through Zebilla, Bawku and ends at Pulimakom.

The Finance Committee said in its report that in view of the importance of the road, the Government of Ghana commenced the construction of the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulimakom road in 2016 with funding from the Road Fund.

“Unfortunately, Road Fund was unable to release the needed funds to finance the project. As a result, the project has stalled,” the committee noted.

  • Coronavirus: Ghana has over 400 ventilators

The Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare has revealed that the 307 ambulances recently procured to help augment operations of the National Ambulance Service (NAS) are equipped with mobile ventilators.

He said the country already had 100 ventilators in the health system before the ambulances arrived in January.

Responding to a query from Kwesi Pratt Jnr on Accra-based Peace FM Tuesday, Dr Asare said there were over 400 ventilators in Ghana’s health system.

Dr Asare said the country had also acquired 50 additional ventilators following the outbreak of the Coronavirus in the country.

He also disclosed that a total of 2547 have been tested for Coronavirus in Ghana with 152 persons testing positive for the illness.

Ghana has also recorded two recoveries and five deaths from the Coronavirus.

According to the World Health Organization, one in six COVID-19 patients becomes seriously ill and can develop breathing difficulties.

The breathing difficulties are managed with ventilators – the mechanical breathing devices which are crucial in the fight to save patients whose lungs are assailed by the coronavirus.

According to the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the United States which has more confirmed cases than any other country in the world has 200,000 ventilators.

The United Kingdom’s National Health System is reported to have 8,175 ventilators.

Meanwhile, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, meanwhile, said this week that countries in the continent were looking to engage with wealthier countries to secure key supplies, including ventilators, if the situation deteriorates.

    How does a ventilator work?

In the most severe cases, the coronavirus damages healthy tissue in the lungs, making it hard for them to deliver oxygen to the blood.

Pneumonia can develop, along with a more severe and potentially deadly condition called acute respiratory distress syndrome, which can damage other organs.

To prevent this, mechanical ventilators feed oxygen into the lungs of patients with severe respiratory problems through a tube inserted down the throat.

The ventilator also has a humidifier, which adds heat and moisture to the air to match the patient’s body temperature.

Patients with milder symptoms may be put on non-invasive ventilation, using face masks, nasal masks or mouthpieces which allow pressurised air or mixtures of gases to be pushed into the lungs.

Additionally, hoods with pressurised oxygen pumped in them via a valve are also commonly used.

  • Amazon workers threaten strikes over virus gear

Pressure is building on Amazon and other delivery firms to improve protections for workers worried about getting infected with coronavirus.

Some US workers at Amazon and US food delivery firm Instacart are threatening strikes, and have accused the firms of not providing proper protections.

US senators have also written to Amazon boss Jeff Bezos to express concerns.

The companies have said they are taking extra precautions, amid booming demand for delivery services due to the virus.

“We are going to great lengths to keep the buildings extremely clean and help employees practice important precautions such as social distancing and other measures”, an Amazon spokesman said in a statement.

“Those who don’t want to work are welcome to use paid and unpaid time off options and we support them in doing so”.

Amazon said it had adjusted its practices, including increasing cleaning of its facilities and introducing staggered shift and break times.

Mr Bezos earlier this month addressed the worries in an open letter to staff, thanking them for their work.

The company, which is looking to hire 100,000 more warehouse workers in the US to help address the surge in orders, has also said it would boost pay for warehouse staff around the world, including $2 per hour in the US and £2 per hour in the UK, where staff have been told to work overtime.

However, US lawmakers have questioned Amazon over reports of shortages of protective and cleaning supplies, as well as its sick leave policies.

The firm earlier faced strikes by workers in France and Italy and has been hit by legal complaints over the issues in Spain, according to a global alliance of unions coordinated by UNI Global Union.

  • 31 COVID-19 patients recover in Ghana Health Minister says

Thirty-one out of the 152 persons who were receiving treatment after contracting COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus have recovered, the Health Minister, Kweku Agyeman-Manu has disclosed.

He said, however, that they will be kept in isolation and monitored for about four weeks.

After this period, more tests will be conducted before they are declared to have fully recovered.

This brings the total number of people who have recovered from the disease in Ghana to 33. Five persons have, however, died after contracting the COVID-19.

The development brings relief to many as Accra, Kumasi and Kasoa enter day two of a partial lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country.

More than 37,000 people have died from COVID-19 globally, while over 780,000 infections have been confirmed in at least 178 countries and territories. More than 166,000 people have recovered from the coronavirus.

In Ghana and all countries across the world, stringent measures, including lockdowns have been declared to curb the spread of the disease.

On Monday, the Health Service in its web updates indicated that no new cases had been recorded.

“The Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research tested 17 samples from the Upper East (3), North East (3) and Ashanti (11) regions all of which were Negative.

“No new test results have been received from Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research since the last update.”

  • Mahamas absence from Special Prosecutors invitation list proves hes innocent Edudzi Tamakloe

Edudzi Tamakloe, an aide to former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that failure of the Special Prosecutor to invite John Mahama for questioning on the matter vindicates their stance that the former President is innocent.

According to him, the Special Prosecutor knows former President Mahama is not in the position to answer to allegations of bribery and corruption in the purchase of the aircraft from Airbus since the officials involved in the purchase are still alive and can respond to the allegations.

His comments come after the Special Prosecutor, in a Newspaper publication invited Samuel Adam Mahama, brother of the former President and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Mahama, and three other British nationals to assist the office in investigations.

Speaking on Accra based Okay FM, Edudzi Tamakloe argued that the fact that the former President was not invited by the Special Prosecutor solidifies their stance that John Dramani Mahama did not receive bribe of any penny from Airbus in the said scandal.

“Was the former President invited? What is most important for me is as far as the investigation is concerned, John Mahama was not part of the invited persons. If I compare this to the statement made by Godfred Yeboah Dame that some government officials were not cooperating, at least from the preliminary investigation and the publication by Ghanaian Times, the people invited by 4 and incidentally, they are all British Nationals including Samuel Mahama even though He has Ghanaian parentage

  • US in good shape to meet virus ‘peak’ – Trump

Donald Trump has said the US will be in “a very good shape” in terms of the number of ventilators available by the time the coronavirus outbreak peaks.

The president said at least 10 US companies were now making the medical devices, and some might be exported.

The virus can cause severe respiratory issues as it attacks the lungs. Ventilators help keep patients breathing.

The US has more than 160,000 confirmed virus cases and nearly 3,000 deaths.

New York City is the worst-hit place in America, with nearly 800 confirmed fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The US last week became the country with the most reported cases, ahead of Italy and China.

Speaking at Monday’s Coronavirus Task Force briefing at the White House, Mr Trump said: “We have now 10 companies at least making the ventilators, and we say go ahead because, honestly, other countries – they’ll never be able to do it.”

Asked whether there would be enough ventilators for all patients in the US who needed them during a predicted peak in infections in two weeks’ time, Mr Trump responded: “I think we going to be in a very good shape.”

He said more than a million Americans had been tested for the virus, “more than any other country by far. Not even close”.

He accused a reporter who pointed out that South Korea had tested proportionally more people when measured by population size of negativity.

And he added that he should be congratulated on his administration’s progress in fighting the virus.

  • American Airlines seeks $12bn bailout

One of the major developments in the last few hours is that the world’s biggest carrier in terms of passengers, American Airlines, is now seeking $12bn (£9.7bn) in support from the US government to help it through the crisis.

The funds were allocated to the company in the $2.2tn economic stimulus package approved by the US government last week.

American Airlines hopes the financial support means pay cuts and involuntary furloughs can be avoided.

The carrier says there will be reduced flight schedules over the next few months and the company will therefore offer enhanced voluntary leave and early retirement options to its staff.

With airlines around the globe practically grounded, there’s growing concern how those companies can survive the next weeks.

  • E/R Assemblies tighten security over influx of people escaping from locked-down areas

Some local assemblies in the Eastern Region have complained about the influx of people in the region following the lockdown of parts of the country.

Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Kumasi are currently under lockdown following a directive by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in an attempt to combat the coronavirus pandemic which has so far infected some 152 people and led to the death of five others.

The lockdown came into effect on Monday, March 30, 2020.

Meanwhile, in an attempt to escape the lockdown, some people in the coronavirus-hit areas have moved into the Eastern Region, which lies between the Greater Accra Region and the Ashanti Region.

The leadership of the Juaben South, Akuapem North Municipal Assembly, Akuapem South and Okere Municipal Assemblies have thus tightened security in their respective areas to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

As part of measures to prevent persons with the virus from entering such areas, the four municipal assemblies in a joint statement said they are mounting barriers at about 15 points where security officials together with “Public health workers would be present at these checkpoints to take the temperature of people and direct abnormal cases to the appropriate authorities.”

“We wish to assure all our stakeholders that these measures are taken in the interest of the people and citizens would only last for two weeks subject to review and that all the steps taken would help mitigate the impact of influx of people from other parts of the country that could possibly lead to the spread of the virus in the municipalities and district. It is therefore expected that as law-abiding citizens, we should cooperate with the assemblies to ensure that lives are protected and together, we shall overcome this too,” the statement assemblies added.

All hotels and guest houses have also been asked to furnish the four assemblies with the number of visitors they receive for the necessary action to be taken.

Food vendors, chop bars, restaurants have also been asked to only provide “take away” services as all pubs, drinking spots have also been directed to shut down until further notice.

Market women and traders at Adawso market, Asenema market, Agartha market, Koforidua Central market, Juaben Serwaa market, Zongo markets, and the beads market have been directed to run a rotational system to avoid crowding.

The Information Services Department of these assemblies would also carry out public education to encourage enhanced personal hygiene and the measures outlined in the directives as the police and emergency response teams step up patrols to ensure strict compliance.

  • New Edubiase United president Abdul Salam wants season to be cancelled

New Edubiase United president Abdul Salam Yakubu is arguing for the 2019/20 football season to be nullified.

Like the rest of the world, all football activities in the country have been put on hold due to coronavirus pandemic.

Yakubu, whose side play in the National Division One League, does not see how the season would be completed in time before the start of the next campaign in August.

“The GFA have to give us time to prepare our team when the pandemic is over to play the second round, because you can’t tell us to resume immediately (play the following week),” he told Asempa FM.

“We need at least two weeks to a month to prepare and play the league of which time is not on our side because we want to synchronize with the European calendar.

”Clubs also are not disciplined as regards fielding unqualified players which need to be addressed because it will affect the league.

“The 2019/20 football should be voided for us to go to Congress.”
