  • How panic buying is exposing more Ghanaians to coronavirus

It was expected, mostly because it had been rumored largely throughout the week; a possible lockdown by government in the face of the dreaded coronavirus.

Many citizens sat, glued to their television sets , awaiting another address by his Excellency the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Friday evening.

Soon it was announced! A lockdown for at least 2 weeks, till a significant reduction in numbers is seen.

A day after, and countless persons are in the streets, at different points; the market, the gas station, the supermarkets, all for one thing, to get enough for their homes for the period.

Social distancing; keeping at least a distance of a meter away from others to avoid further spread of the virus, has totally been ignored on a day like this as hundreds, maybe thousands dash out for foodstuff.

Face and nose masks are all over, even substitutes of handkerchiefs or pieces of cloths are also being used by some for protection.

Many others are moving around practically without any form of protection, traders especially.

What people may not know is that the huge crowds are out there, make it even more riskier for people.
In effect, this is a much easier way to spread the pandemic, more because there would be a lot of interactions at close length, there would be a lot of surface touching etc.

Meanwhile, the President has allowed for food-chain providers to still work so as to provide food for the populace. The Liquified Petroleum gas Marketers association also says it will not be affected by the partial lockdown.

The question then arises; why cant people wait to purchase these goods and services at their convenience or when they need it, to avoid an exacerbation of the already disturbing situation?

  • I caught the last flight to propose to my girlfriend on the other side of the world

Stay in Cairo with family or catch the last flight to Canada to be with my love. I needed to decide quickly but feared that traveling during this pandemic was the equivalent of suicide, or worse, murder.
As Covid-19 began to spread across the globe, I believed nowhere was safe and self-isolation was the best course of action. Still, love will make you do stupid things.
I’m a Canadian-Egyptian in love with an Italian-American, Francesca Brundisini, who is working on a postdoc in Quebec City. She’s new to the city and feared that her isolation with no friends or family would lead to a communication breakdown if she contracted the virus.
As news of the pandemic broke out worldwide, we both realized that this crisis would last more than a few weeks. It was the distance, the uncertainty, and an alarmed Italian mother — panicking in Italy — that pushed me to make a move.
There was no guarantee I would be able to find a flight and leaving behind my family left me feeling tormented.
Both my parents are in their 60s and are at high-risk as they suffer from various health complications, including diabetes and heart issues. Leaving them could have meant never seeing them again.
They encouraged me to try to find a flight, partly because they cared and worried about my partner being alone in Canada, but also because we all thought finding a ticket would’ve been impossible.

    Scrambling for a seat

    byemom

Eihab Boraie hugs his mom farewell at Cairo’s international airport.
Once Egypt announced its airports would close on March 19, the only tickets left skyrocketed from $700 to over $3,000, most of them requiring stops in virus-ravaged countries.
I decided to take a chance and put my name on EgyptAir’s waiting list for a direct flight to Toronto hoping for a miracle. I assumed the only way I would be traveling home was if the Canadian government sent a plane to retrieve stranded Canadians.
Incredibly, hours before the airport’s closure, I received a call confirming that I had a seat on the last flight to Canada.
I rushed to EgyptAir’s office in Cairo’s Korba district and got the ticket. As I ran out the door, a jewelry store nearby caught my eye. It was ridiculous that this non-essential store stayed open, but it was as if the universe knew I needed one at that moment.
On the drive back home, I saw Egypt’s military dispersing across the city preparing to deploy, a move that often indicates that a curfew may be coming.
Memories of mandatory curfew during Egypt’s uprisings started rushing back, but in these strange times, these draconian measures were oddly comforting as they would help limit infections.

    Emotional farewell

    Eihabatairport

Eihab Boraie wearing a face mask en route to Canada.
    Eihab Boraie
I arrived at the airport and gave a big hug to both my parents, hoping it wouldn’t be the last.
Overwhelmed with emotions, I entered the terminal expecting to encounter scenes of chaos. Instead, the building was shockingly empty.
Before the pandemic, Cairo Airport had been bustling as tourism had begun bouncing back following recent political and social upheaval in the wake of Egypt’s uprisings.
During those times, I had seen Cairo’s airport empty, but never like this.
There was no line at the first security check. Throughout the airport, it appeared that most workers were wearing masks and sometimes gloves, but not everyone. I noticed a few workers handling the luggage carts weren’t wearing either.
As I arrived at the check-in counters, I was told that this was the last flight going to Canada. There were no other flights checking in at the time. The lack of departures was a relief as it allowed the passengers to socially distance from one another.

    emptycairo

    Cairo Airport was mostly empty.
    Eihab Boraie
Once I checked in, there were no lines at security to enter the terminal and there was barely anyone inside except a few employees and passengers.
Navigating the massive walkways — at times with absolutely no one in sight — felt like being in a post-apocalyptic movie waiting for a swarm of contagious zombies to turn the corner.
At no point was my temperature checked, nor was there anyone asking about any symptoms.
I later learned from a relative who took the same plane back to Egypt that they were doing temperature checks on arrival at Cairo Airport.
The line getting onto the plane was uncomfortably crowded. Most passengers were equipped with masks and covered up, only revealing the nervousness in their eyes.
Those who remained mask-less were often old or young and equally indifferent to the crisis at hand.

The longest flight of my life

    cairo check in

Check-in for the flight was crowded. Most passengers wore masks.
    Eihab Boraie
Boarding MS995 was completed in record time. Yet the departure was annoyingly delayed.
Two passengers refused to take their seats as they were seated beside the toilets. After a failed attempt to switch places, they finally decided to forfeit their tickets on the last flight out.
Every decision made on this trip seemed magnified into a matter of life and death, and sitting by the bathroom on a fully booked flight could have arguably increased the chances of being infected.
The only worse scenario would be sitting beside someone exhibiting symptoms, which is where I found myself.
Sandwiched between a 72-year-old mother and her 38-year-old daughter, I immediately offered them both hand sanitizer.
The mother was wearing a mask but appeared to have a runny nose and cough. While the daughter sitting in the aisle seat was wearing no protective measures and didn’t seem too concerned about the risk of traveling.
There wasn’t a passenger aboard that could have predicted the series of decisions made that week, and it seemed everyone had to scramble for a ticket.
“I was expecting that the borders would be closed in Canada, not in Egypt, but it happened in Egypt before Canada,” explained the mother.

    aboard the flight

Departure was delayed by passengers anxious at being seated near the toilet.
    Eihab Boraie
As she continued to explain her frustrating ordeal to find tickets, the mother mentioned their efforts to receive help from the consulate were to no avail. Her daughter believed that visiting the EgyptAir office in person was the reason they found seats.
“I found out a lot of people on the previous flight out had been turned away because they weren’t Canadians. So, there were empty seats on that flight, and I decided we should try to go to the office and get on the waiting list … When we got the tickets, I was excited, it felt like we had won the lottery,” explained the daughter.
Throughout the flight, I was on edge as every cough was a reminder that I was potentially traveling with the invisible enemy sitting next to me. I asked the mother if she was feeling well, but she continued to assure me she was okay.
“I just got a cold a few days ago and looked at the symptoms, but they say it doesn’t start with a runny nose, it starts with a dry cough. But don’t tell anybody, I don’t want them to send me back,” she pleaded.
I wondered if she was risking the flight because she would feel safer in Canada, but then she explained: “I don’t think Ottawa is safer than Cairo, I just want to be home and be with my daughters and grandchildren.”
The whole reason for my travel was to be with the one I love, but I wouldn’t have taken the trip if I was showing symptoms.

    Landing in Toronto

    emptytoronto2

The airport in Toronto was also quiet.
    Eihab Boraie
I arrived in Toronto and expected the airport to be filled with Canadians returning from all over the world, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had recently urged citizens overseas to head home.
To my amazement, the airport was as barren as Cairo’s. When we got off the plane, there was some security personnel handing out pamphlets reminding people to self-isolate for two weeks.
At customs, they casually asked me if I had any symptoms, but again I didn’t have my temperature checked or anything else. Maybe they had a hidden thermal imaging camera somewhere, but as a Canadian, I was concerned that these screening measures weren’t enough.
The only line I had to wait at in the airport wasn’t at customs, security or health checks but at a coffee shop. Once I reached the cashier, I again felt disheartened as none of the employees were wearing masks.
I had seven hours before my next flight. I decided to explore the airport and discovered a medical clinic.
I asked the receptionist if they offered a Covid-19 test. Their eyes widened at the question and they told me that they didn’t, but gave me a number to call if I started exhibiting symptoms.
As I continued wandering around, I assumed traffic would pick up. But by midday, there was only a handful of travelers scattered across the airport.
“I was working here during SARS, but even then, the airport was never this empty,” one airport security guard told me.

    Proposing quarantine

    canadaarrivals

There was plenty of room on the flight to Quebec City.
    Eihab Boraie
The flight to Quebec City was half empty, allowing most passengers to take a row of seats for themselves.
Upon arrival, there was once again no screening process. I had traveled from Cairo to Quebec City during a global pandemic without even a basic check.
In the time it took me to get there, more than a thousand people had died of Covid-19, and the death toll had surpassed 10,000 globally.
When my girlfriend Francesca arrived, I snuck up behind her, got down on one knee, and proposed.
She was completely caught off guard as less than 48 hours before she didn’t know when and if she would ever see me again, let alone predict that I would ask her to marry me.
She accepted my proposal, we removed our masks and made it official with a long kiss.
    untitled
I was relieved she said yes as it reaffirmed that although the journey was risky it was worth it. I couldn’t have imagined what I would have done if she refused as there was no going back to Egypt.
My fiancée loved the ring and placed it on her finger, but we both knew that the kiss sealed the deal as it meant she accepted possibly contracting the virus that I hoped I wasn’t carrying.
When they heard about the engagement, her family and friends in Italy showered us with congratulations. For many of them this was the first bit of good news they had heard in over a month.

    Insta lovers

The couple is looking forward to getting married in Italy after the crisis.
    Eihab Boraie
If I learned anything from this crisis it’s that time is unpredictably short, and if I was willing to risk her health, I should also be prepared to commit to spending the rest of our lives together.
Our hope is that we will get to enjoy each other beyond the next two weeks, but we both know that there’s no telling if the risk of traveling was worth it until our quarantine is over.
When the world is healed, our plan is to get married in Italy on the island of Giglio, but it’s hard to imagine when that will be. Until that day the only couple goals we set in stone is to stay isolated and survive the quarantine.

  • Coronavirus: Over twenty people arrested at unapproved borders in Jomoro

A joint patrol team in the Jomoro Municipality has apprehended over twenty people who used unapproved borders to enter Ghana from La Cote D’Ivoire in the wake of the deadly Coronavirus outbreak globally.

The move follows President Nana Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s order to close Ghana’s borders to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

The joint patrol team which comprises the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), is mandated to monitor the ten unapproved borders in the Elubo enclave.

However, Jomoro Municipality has twenty unapproved borders apart from the approved three borders at Elubo, New Town and Jaway Wharf.

Since the main border posts in the Municipality had been closed down following the President’s order, some unlawful people have been trying their way to enter the country by using these unapproved borders.

Acting upon a tip-off, the joint patrol team was able to arrest more than twenty people.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s Western Regional Correspondent Daniel Kaku, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) boss at Elubo, Chief Superintendent Ahmed Musah confirmed the arrest as authentic.

He said they arrested twenty people on Monday night a day after the President’s directive that nobody should enter the country.

He added that they also arrested two people on Wednesday, March 25, 2020.

He explained that 15 of the twenty people were all Ivorians and other 5 were Ghanaians who were returning from La Cote D’Ivoire .

Chief Supt. Ahmed emphasized that all the 22 people were screened and returned those Ivorians to their country.

According to him, those Ghanaians were referred to Health Officials for the necessary actions to be taken.

“The unapproved routes at Elubo are many and these people use River Tano to enter the country but we were able to arrest them and returned those from La Cote D’Ivoire and handed over those Ghanaians to the Health Professionals”, he stated.

He, therefore, pledged to make sure nobody uses the unapproved routes to enter Ghana but called on government to provide them with security apparatus to enhance them in their task.

On the rumours that their are not using some of the recommended preventive items, Chief Supt. Ahmed debunked it.

He disclosed that 500 nose masks and 30 bottles of alcoholic-based hand sanitizers have been given to them for protection against contracting and spreading the killer virus.

“Those saying we are not using the preventive items are lying because as we are talking we have 500 nose masks, 30 bottles of alcoholic-based hand sanitizers and also we have Veronica buckets and tissue papers to protect ourselves and we will get more”, he said.

He, therefore, took the opportunity to commend his Regional boss for visiting them at Elubo border post to see whether the border post has been closed down or not.

He said his Regional boss also took the opportunity to look at how some of their offices were burnt by fire on Sunday.

Speaking to GhanaWeb, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Jomoro Municipality, Mr. Ernest Kofie hailed the Ghana Immigration Service and Ghana Police Service at Elubo for arresting those unlawful people who wanted to pass through the unapproved routes to Ghana.

The MCE said though it is sole responsibility of the Ghana Immigration Service to check people who are entering the country and leaving the country but he is therefore appealing to some security services to support the GIS to fight the battle.

He added that the Ghana Immigration Service alone cannot patrol all the 20 unapproved borders in the Municipality and calling on his people and the media to assist the GIS.

Mr. Kofie revealed that the three approved border posts namely Elubo, Jaway Wharf and New Town in the Municipality have been closed down.

He, therefore seized the opportunity to warn against those planning to use the unofficial routes to stop.

“People are suggesting that when we arrest people using these unapproved borders we should quarantine them but we all know we don’t facilities like hotels to do that so what we had planned to do that is that when we arrest any foreigner, we will quickly return the person to his or her country but as for Ghanaians we will screen them and give them to the Health Professionals also those Ghanaians who want to enter Ivory Coast we will prevent them from going”, he explained to GhanaWeb’s Western Regional Correspondent.

The MCE said government would deal with any security personnel who would allow anybody to enter Ghana.

He said they would beef up security personnel at the various unapproved borders in the Municipality.

“As we are going forward, we will change our strategy to deal with the situation, we are ready to welcome any report from the media to beef up our strategy”, he stressed.

He added that, “In fact since the President’s directive I have been sleeping well, everyday I have to move to our borders to monitor the situation because we the people of Jomoro are not safe because we have so many unapproved borders apart from the official three borders and I will also call on those who have managed to enter Ghana should report himself or herself for quarantine so that our flight against the Coronavirus would be easy”.

Mr. Ernest Kofie who has been visiting Communities in the Municipality to educate them about the Coronavirus and how to protect themselves, took the opportunity to commend President Akufo-Addo for taking a bold decision to close all borders in the country.

According to him, the closure of the borders has helped the country from contracting and spreading more of the Coronavirus.

He called on Ghanaians to rally behind President Akufo-Addo to put hard preventive measures in place to combat the killer Coronavirus.

  • Coronavirus cradle Wuhan partly reopens after lockdown

The city in China where the coronavirus pandemic began, Wuhan, has partially re-opened after more than two months of isolation.

Crowds of passengers were pictured arriving at Wuhan train station on Saturday.

People are being allowed to enter but not leave, according to reports.

Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, saw more than 50,000 coronavirus cases. At least 3,000 people in Hubei died from the disease.

But numbers have fallen dramatically, according to China’s figures. The state on Saturday reported 54 new cases emerging the previous day – which it said were all imported.

As it battles to control cases coming from abroad, China has announced a temporary ban on all foreign visitors, even if they have visas or residence permits. It is also limiting Chinese and foreign airlines to one flight per week, and flights must not be more than 75% full.

    In other global developments:

Meanwhile, the virus continues to spread rapidly in other countries around the world.

    • Nearly 600,000 infections have been confirmed globally and almost 28,000 deaths, according to figures collated by Johns Hopkins University
    • The death toll in Spain has exceeded 5,000, after it reported 832 more fatalities in the past 24 hours. Spain is the world’s worst hit country after Italy
    • The US now has the highest number of confirmed infections at 104,000
    • South Korea says that for the first time it now has more people who have recovered from the virus than are still infected. It reported 146 new cases on Saturday, taking the total to 9,478 – of whom 4,811 have been released from hospital
    • Russia and Ireland are among the latest countries to bring in new restrictions to try to slow the spread of the virus. In Russia, shopping centres, restaurants and cafes have been ordered to close. In Ireland, people will have to stay at home with limited exceptions for the next two weeks
    • In the UK, frontline National Health Service staff in England will begin being tested this weekend to see if they have coronavirus

What signs are there of Wuhan reopening?

The virus is thought to have originated in a seafood market in Wuhan that “conducted illegal transactions of wild animals”.

The city’s 11 million residents have been shut off from the rest of the world since the middle of January, with roadblocks around the outskirts and drastic restrictions on daily life.

Media captionCoronavirus: Life inside China’s lockdown

But roads reopened to incoming traffic late on Friday, according to Reuters news agency.

And state media said the subway was open from Saturday and trains would be able to arrive at the city’s 17 railway stations.

Nineteen-year-old student Guo Liangkai, who arrived back in the city after three months, told Reuters: “First of all, it makes me very happy to see my family.

“We wanted to hug but now is a special period so we can’t hug or make any actions like these.”

All arrivals in Wuhan have to show a green code on a mobile app to prove that they are healthy.

Officials say restrictions on people leaving the city will be lifted on 8 April, when domestic flights are also expected to restart.

The virus emerged in China in December and more than 3,300 people there have died from the infection – but both Italy and Spain now have higher death tolls.

It is now battling to control a wave of imported cases as infections soar abroad.

This so-called “second wave” of imported infections is also affecting countries like South Korea and Singapore, which had been successful in stopping the spread of disease in recent weeks.

  • 101-year-old Italian man recovers from COVID-19

A 101-year-old Italian man who was born during the Spanish flu pandemic has recovered from the novel coronavirus.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Mayor of the Italian city of Rimini, Gloria Lisi who revealed the man has been released from the hospital and is now home with his family.

The man, who has been named only as “Mr. P” was admitted to hospital in Rimini, northeast Italy last week after testing positive for COVID-19 and left the hospital on Thursday, March 26.

The Deputy Mayor of Rimini said his “truly extraordinary” recovery gave “hope for the future. Mr. P made it. The family brought him home yesterday evening. To teach us that even at 101 years the future is not written.”

Mr. P was born in 1919 during the Spanish Flu pandemic which is estimated to have killed between 30 million and 50 million people worldwide.

Rimini had registered 1,189 cases of coronavirus as of Thursday, according to the Italian Civil Protection Department.

Italy yesterday recorded its highest daily jump in coronavirus deaths by 969 with an increase of 4,401 cases.

The total number of death now stands at 9,134, more than any other country and the total number of recorded cases, including deaths and those who have recovered, now stands at 86,498.

  • Coronavirus: West Gonja hospital cry over lack of PPEs

The West Gonja Catholic Hospital designated as a treatment centre for the novel coronavirus in the Savannah Region is without Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

This was made known by the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Vitalis A.Saadare in an exclusive interview with PAD FM’s Ananpansah B. Abraham.

He said albeit a regional treatment centre, they were not capable of taking samples, not to talk of managing cases should the worst happen due to the lack of basic protection materials.

The hope of receiving government consignment in his view was long overdue, underscoring the need to protect health personnel in their line of duty, since if they die in the process of taking care of patients there would be no one to take care of ensuing cases.

“…But as far as the Personal Protection Equipment are concerned which comprises the suit and all its accoutrements, we do not have a single one. As we speak, we do not have the suit here in this hospital, so if we happen to get any suspected case we would not even be able to take a sample. Taking us back to the recent events, we suspected a case last week. We brought the gentleman to the ward and had to take a sample. And you cannot take the sample when you’re not properly protected. So we had to wait for 24 hours to make a request for just one(of the protective cloth) from Tamale,” he stated.

According to him, subsequent to the case involving the Damongo based Italian returnee which proved negative, the hospital has not received any support to acquire these equipment and would not be able to take a sample if a suspected case is recorded.

This is despite the fact that the facility spent not less than thousand Ghana cedis in transporting the samples to Kumasi for the necessary examination.

He said the hospital has put together a preparedness plan and would need a total amount of Ghc217,800.00 to fund the plan and another Ghc878,965.00 for all Diocesan Health Services in Damongo.

He appealed to government and other well-meaning bodies to come to the aid of the hospital.

The Bishop of the Diocese and Chief Executive Officer for the hospital, Most Rev.Peter Paul Angkyier, who was on a one-day visit to the facility commended management and staff for the good work they were doing in the midst of little.

He bemoaned the lack of logistics and equipment at the recently commissioned Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the COVID-19 treatment centre.

He commended a weekly political program hosted by Ananpansah B Abraham on PAD FM for helping to dispel rumours about the Coronavirus and redirecting the conversion to the preparedness of the region in containing the spread of the virus, in terms of logistics.

Prayer, he said was not enough without the preparedness of the human person.

Present also were the normalisation committee members of the hospital led by Fr.Lazarus Annyereh.

Ghana’s case count now stands at 137 with four deaths and two reported recovery cases.

The Upper West Region in Northern Ghana has confirmed its first case of COVID-19, involving a 42-year old Ghanaian who visited UK and Spain and returned to Ghana through Egypt.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced a partial lockdown of Accra and Kumasi, the epicentres of the coronavirus diseases in Ghana effective Monday, March 30, 2020.

  • Wakaso escapes coronavirus after Jiangsu Suning move

Wakaso decided to move from Spain to China in January and although it did not look promising at the time, he is better off in the coronavirus issue unlike Victoria which is recording a number of positive cases.

Victoria is one of the places in Spain with the highest concentration of those affected by coronaviruses. In Alavés alone, there are 15 cases, so Wakaso can say that he was lucky to leave the club on time.

Wakaso was a regular at Alavés earlier in the season. The club wanted to renew his contract but the player refused so they sold him to Jiangsu Suning for three million euros .

If they had chosen to keep him, they would have seen him go for free at the end of the season.

Alaves currently has three first team members who have tested positive for the virus and the Ghanaian would feel that he made a narrow escape. China has seen a huge reduction in cases and an increase in recoveries.

  • Daily Guide: Epicentre of lawlessness

The Kasoa stretch, our description for the area from this Central Regional bustling town as it winds away towards Winneba, has earned an unenviable notoriety in recent times.

The area was a major receptacle for hordes of refugees from the then civil war-torn Liberia and local criminals who joined them in Budumburam in the outskirts of Kasoa.

Although the refugees have largely returned to their country of origin, some of them are still living there and joined by Nigerian criminals, a dangerous amalgam of bad guys has been created who unleash a reign of terror not only in the surrounding areas but even in Accra.

Many criminal activities, some of them murderous, have taken place in this general area but hardly have these warranted the kind of action required in such circumstances.

The toll is countless and unless the criminals are made to understand that the place cannot remain a safe haven for them indefinitely, they would continue to rob, maim and even kill, their stock-in-trade.

The suspected murderers of the Sogakope assemblyman were traced to the stretch and many before it.

It would not be surprising if many wanted criminals are taking cover here.

In a society where people do not report suspicious characters to the law enforcement agents, we should not expect much from the public. A better way of fishing the criminals out would be preferably and this should be a consistent module.

Some police officers met their untimely death along this stretch. Sometime ago, a joint military/police operation was undertaken at Kasoa to rid the place of the human venoms. It was short-lived and very soon it was business as usual with the stretch suffering some of its worst crimes.

We can bet that the criminals consider themselves somewhat invincible because, after all, they have operated near indefinitely.

Besides harbouring hardened robbers, the locations are havens for hired assassins, some of whom have been in action lately.

Rival chiefs have used them to settle their scores; the outcome of which turned bloody in the end.

Even as we concentrate on the coronavirus and how to manage it, we wish to remind the security agents that the criminals would use these worrying moments to embark on surprise missions from their Kasoa bases.

Until a major operation is undertaken to rid the stretch of the criminals, the Kasoa Divisional Police Command should be provided with the necessary logistics to police the area.

In such areas where criminals are strong and rely on a sophisticated network of links, intelligence is critical.

  • Coronavirus: Kwadwo Asamoah sends message to affected victims

Inter Milan’s Kwadwo Asamoah has shown his support for the people of Ghana affected by the coronavirus.

The pandemic has affected more than half a million people globally.

Ghana has recorded 136 cases and four deaths, the second highest in the West African subregion behind Burkina Faso.

Asamoah’s base of Italy has been the most hit in Europe with more than 80,000 cases and 9,000 deaths.

The 31-year-old had recently narrated the ordeal in Italy, calling it “worrying and “scary”.

“All my support and love to the people affected by the Covid-19, especially in Ghana,” Asamoah posted on Twitter.

“Please follow the rules and take all precautions to avoid the spread.”

Asamoah had been the main left wing-back for Inter under Antonio Conte for the early part of the season until he suffered a knee injury in October which has limited him to just an 18 minute cameo since then.

He has since lost his place to January recruit Ashley Young.

  • Coronavirus: India ‘super spreader’ quarantines 40,000 people

Indian authorities in the northern state of Punjab have quarantined around 40,000 residents from 20 villages following a Covid-19 outbreak linked to just one man.

The 70-year-old died of coronavirus – a fact found out only after his death.

The man, a preacher, had ignored advice to self quarantine after returning from a trip to Italy and Germany, officials told BBC Punjabi’s Arvind Chhabra.

India has 640 confirmed cases of the virus, of which 30 are in Punjab.

However, experts worry that the real number of positive cases could be far higher. India has one of the lowest testing rates in the world, although efforts are under way to ramp up capacity.

There are fears that an outbreak in the country of 1.3 billion people could result in a catastrophe. The man, identified as Baldev Singh, had visited a large gathering to celebrate the Sikh festival of Hola Mohalla shortly before he died.A week after his death, 19 of his relatives have tested positive.

“So far, we have been able to trace 550 people who came into direct contact with him and the number is growing. We have sealed 15 villages around the area he stayed,” a senior official told the BBC.

Another five villages in an adjoining district have also been sealed.

This is not the first time that exposure has resulted in mass quarantining in India.

In Bhilwara, a textile city in the northern state of Rajasthan, there are fears that a group of doctors who were infected by a patient could have spread the disease to hundreds of people.

Seven thousand people in villages neighbouring the city are under home quarantine.

India has also declared a 21-day lockdown, although people are free to go out to buy essential items like food and medicine.

  • Singapore threatens 6 months in jail for breaking social distancing laws

Singapore has introduced new laws governing social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak that could see offenders serve six months in jail.

Those who do not keep at least one meter (3.2 feet) apart, or who meet in groups of more than 10 people outside of work or school, could face a fine of up to 10,000 Singapore dollars ($7,000) and/or up to six months’ imprisonment, according to a Ministry of Health statement posted Thursday.

The new measures come into effect Friday and also include the same penalties for those who fail to stay in their accommodation if given a “Stay-Home Notice.”
Such notices have been issued to certain inbound travelers as well as people with respiratory conditions flagged by medical practitioners.

On Wednesday, Singapore reported 73 new cases of coronavirus, its largest one-day increase in cases.

Since Monday borders have been closed to all short-term visitors and travelers transiting though the city.

The only exception is for Malaysians with Singapore work permits, who have been able to continue working in Singapore.

The government has urged employers to put in place measures to reduce close physical interactions between employees, and to facilitate telecommuting for employees to work from home.

  • Coronavirus: Tsatsu Tsikata not dead Family debunks rumours

Family of former Chief Executive Officer of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Tsatsu Tsikata, has debunked rumors suggesting one of their own has passed away at the Ridge Hospital.

A family member who spoke to GhanaWeb noted that reports by some local media houses with the suggestions were fake and unfortunate.

Reacting to the reportage, the source stated categorically that “it’s all false and Tsatsu Tsikata is very much alive and well”.

It was reported earlier that an elderly man had died of the novel coronavirus after visiting the Ridge hospital on Thursday.

The demise of the man, they added was the son of a popular Ghanaian musician who they alleged failed to immediately disclose the travel history of the deceased following the admission of his father who had recently returned from a trip to the United States.

Apparently, it was the father of Ghanaian hiplife legend and former president of the Musician Union of Ghana (MUSIGHA), Bice Osei Kuffour, known in showbiz circles as Obour whose father had died at the said hospital.

In a statement released shortly after his father’s demise, Obour said his father, Nana Osei Boansi Kuffuor passed away after doctors said “he is likely to be a confirmed Covid-19” but described claims that he deprived hospital staff of relevant information as false.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has slapped Bechem United head coach Kwaku Danso with a three-match suspension and a fine of GH¢5000 [€800] for “misconduct” during a Premier League match.

The punishment is in relation to his behaviour during a matchweek eight clash with Medeama.

He was charged on four counts.

“Count One indicated that Kwaku Danso interfered with the progress of the match in the 88th minute of the match against Medeama by making disparaging comments about the referee, which brought the match to a temporary stop contrary to Regulation 34(1)(a) of the GFA Premier League Regulations (2019),” the GFA announced in a statement via its official website.

“Count Two indicated that, Kwaku Danso allegedly incited the players against the match officials contrary to Regulation 34(1)(b) of the Premier League Regulations and Article 11(1) of the GFA Disciplinary Code(2019). The particulars of the offence also indicated that after Medeama scored a goal and while the referee was about to restart play, the head coach led two other officials of Bechem United onto the field of play to question the Referee as the propriety of the 15 minutes time added on.

“Count Three indicated that Kwaku Danso allegedly used abusive language against the match officials after the match impugning their integrity and competence contrary to Regulation 34(3) (c) of the GFA Premier League Regulations(2019) and Articles 11(2) (b) and 11(2) (d) of the GFA Disciplinary Code(2020).

“Count Four indicated that the Head Coach allegedly made remarks which implied improper conduct and bias on the part of the Referee bringing the game into disrepute contrary to Regulation 34(6)(d) of the GFA Premier League Regulations.”

Danso was not the only member of his club to cop a fine and suspension as Osei Yaw Collins and Godfred Yeboah Berko were also similarly punished.

  • Feature: Mubarak Wakaso’s incredible journey from Alaves to China

Mubarak Wakaso was one of the best players of Deportivo Alaves in the first half of La Liga, missing only two games and was a key player for new manager Asier Garitano. The Ghana international formed a solid defensive partnership with Tomas Pina and Manu Garcia or Pere Pons.

His swashbuckling midfield display and a knack for getting in the books of referees was distinctive. He was the most carded player in the first round of the Spanish league and in the two games, he missed Alaves struggled.

Despite his incredible numbers at Deportivo Alaves, the player refused a contracted extension and a chance to continue his career in Spain after opting to move to China to join Super League side Jiansu Suning. Clubs like Getafe and Villarreal were interested in the versatile player.

However, a mouthwatering deal from China could not be ignored by the Ghanaian. A deal that fetched some good money for La Glorisso. Wakaso could have left on a free at the end of the campaign but a deal to Asia was also good for Alaves.

The initial thought of Wakaso moving to China felt wrong for a lot but Jorge Franco- a friend of the player and a member of staff at Alaves- it was a win-win situation for the player and the club. Deportivo Alaves made three million Euros from the move.

“You have to understand him because he has signed the contract of his life and his family is delighted with the idea,” Jorge Franco, “Burgui” would say a few days later.

With the Coronavirus spreading like fire in China when Wakaso was making the move, it didn’t really look good health-wise for Ghana. However, the irony was that Deportivo Alaves become the most affected club with the virus in Spain. Fifteen cases recorded at the club, three of who are players in the squad.

Wakaso is currently in Ghana, where it feels safer to avoid the virus at the moment. What an incredible journey for the Ghanaian?

  • 200 ICU beds ready to contain critical Coronavirus cases Oppong Nkrumah

Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said up to 200 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds are ready across the country to admit patients who would be in critical condition of the COVID-19, MyNewsGh.com reports.

He said the number of available beds space was determined by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) after the President, Nana Akufo-Addo ordered an audit of the various hospital beds in the country in the wake of the contagion.

Ghana has so far recorded 136 cases of the virus, but none of the patients is in critical condition, per information by the GHS, and therefore would have no need for an ICU bed at the moment; the death toll stands at four (4) with one recovery.

Speaking with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM on Friday morning, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah prayed that the number of patients who would ever need intensive care would never rise to the number of beds available, but added that should we get to that point, Ghana is adequately prepared.

The Ghana Health Service has said the majority of cases which has resulted in the sudden spike were recorded from persons who have been placed under mandatory quarantine after returning home from affected countries.

The number of confirmed cases among travelers under mandatory quarantine who have been tested is seventy-eight (78).

  • Coronavirus: Travel from Accra to northern Ghana increases at Neoplan station

Operators of the Neoplan station in Accra say they have been recording a spike in travel from Accra to Northern Region in the wake of the novel coronavirus detection in Ghana.

According to them, a significant number of the travellers have been head porters, popularly known as kayayei.

A majority of them are known to migrate from northern Ghana in search of work in Accra.

Aside from most of the cases being detected in Accra, there are fears there will be a lockdown of the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking to Citi News, the first trustee of the Neoplan Drivers Union, John Tetteh also noted that they are seeing less travel into the city.

“We observed yesterday that buses to the north were moving at a faster pace especially the women tagged as kayayei… I am not surprised because maybe they have heard that there may be a lockdown,” he said.

“If you look at the way they live here, it means they have to go back to their various hometowns so that if there should be a lockdown, they can be saved in their various homes.”

Reports from the North indicate head porters have been returning home since last weekend.

In Bimbilla for example, some 90 head porters arrived from Agbloshie last weekend.

They were screened by health workers in the Bimbilla hospital.

Dr Benjamin Anyagre, the General Secretary of Ghana China Friendship Association (GHACHIFA), told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that it was also very important for people to understand that anyone could get infected.

He said it was important now to tap into the expertise of the Chinese, concerning how they managed to curb the spread of the virus.

Dr Anyagre said GHACHIFA was highly appreciative of the gesture of solidarity and support by China towards supporting Ghana in fighting the pandemic.

  • Evil people plotting against Frimpong Boateng Patriotic Youth Alliance

The Patriotic Youth Alliance, a youth group within the New Patriotic Party is alleging that some persons in government are plotting the removal of the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology.

The group says series of publication in the news media and activities of certain people in the NPP government are strong pointers to make them believe there is a grand plan against Professor Frimpong Boateng.

Speaking to journalists, Thomas Boakye, one of the spokespersons of the group said those plotting against Prof Frimpong Boateng have wicked mindsets.

According to him, those persons could not perpetuate fraud on the country because of the fierce resistance the Minister mounted against their illegal activities in mining.

“It is clear that some people in government want Dr Frimpong Boateng out of office because their actions in the media show same and it is not surprising that some pay for stories to be planted against the former finest heart surgeon”, Mr Boakye disclosed.

He noted that this hard stance was preventing some persons in government from feeding fat from illegal mining.

The spokesperson said since the establishment of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) many who dabbled in the dangerous enterprise had been uncomfortable.

He alleged that these persons have contracted some media persons from the opposition newspapers as well as pro-government ones to tarnish the image of the famous heart surgeon.

“I am not surprised that people are still scheming against the Professor because they did not get the ill wealth they intended to have”, the spokesperson said.

Outlining a number of achievements of the Environment Minister, the spokesperson said the mines had become safer since the establishment of the IMCIM, adding that it was due to proper monitoring set in place by Dr Frimpong Boateng.

He noted that the community mining module which was designed by the IMCIM had ensured the employment of over 30, 000 people in clean and regulated mining.

Communities such as Mpasatia, Akrofuom, Kotokuom and others had their youth gaining employment in community mining, the spokesperson pointed out.

Workers in the community mining module, the spokesperson said had been gaining about 60% more from their work due to strict protocols from the IMCIM.

“It was really remarkable the impact of Dr Frimpong Boateng as head of the IMCIM because crime and social vices reduced since the people had jobs to do” Mr. Boakye posted.

  • Coronavirus: Sixteen persons in quarantine in Ketu South

Mr Edem Elliot Agbenorwu, the Municipality Chief Executive (MCE) for Ketu South in the Volta Region has said 14 Ghanaians and two foreign nationals who entered Ghana “illegally” this week were in quarantine at a designated facility in the Municipality.

He alleged the 16 persons were aided by commercial motor riders through the over 25 unapproved routes along the Ghana-Togo border but handed over to the Municipal Assembly by personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

Mr Agbenorwu told the Ghana News Agency that, “the two foreigners are Nigerians and the 14 Ghanaians were returning from UK, U.A.E, South Africa and America via the Airport in Lomé, Togo.”

He said due to the development, the Municipal Security Council had banned commercial motor activities along the beats (unapproved routes).

“The Military will assist the Ghana Immigration Service at these unapproved routes and will deal with any commercial motor rider for insubordination,” he told GNA.

The Ghana News Agency earlier reported that travelers were allegedly using unapproved routes at Zukope, Akporkploe, Apedido, Fihokope and Aveyiborme to cross to and from Togo at night and dawn after the main Aflao-Lome border was closed as part of measures to contain the spread of the Coronavirus disease.

  • Ghanaians in Ivory Coast cross Elubo Boarder through bush paths

Reports reaching the Ghana News Agency (GNA), indicate that some Ghanaian residents in La Cote d’Ivoire have been crossing the Elubo boarder to Ghana through unapproved routes in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Many of these Ghanaian nationals are indigenes of Elubo and its environs who are conversant with the terrain and as a result decide to disregard the main entry point to Ghana for fear of being denied access to enter the country.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Jomoro, Mr.Ernest Kofie confirmed the incident in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.

He told the GNA that Ivorian nationals rather used the Elubo boarder to undergo the safety protocols before entering the country since they did not know the bush paths.

It would be recalled that La Cote d’Ivoire recorded cases of the COVID-19 when Ghana had not recorded any case of the disease. It was weeks after that Ghana recorded its first case.

As to what measures the Assembly had put in place to contain the pandemic, Mr Kofie said the Assembly was financially constrained taking cognizance of the quantum of protective health kits and others to be procured for distribution to the District.

The MCE, therefore, appealed to the central government to come to the aid of the Assembly to reach out to the people.

Mr Kofie, however, said series of sensitization and education was on-going to deepen the understanding of the people on the COVID-19 pandemic and advised the people to continue with the social distancing safety protocol as the first measure to avoid contracting the virus.

    Below is Obour’s full statement

With sadness and a heavy heart I announce the death of Nana Osei Boansi Kuffour my biological father.

Nana returned from UK on 19th March after his yearly visit to the family. Upon his return he was fine but began coughing on Sunday 22nd.

We arranged for his blood sample to be tested and he tested positive for malaria.

We began treatment for malaria but his condition got worse. We arranged to bring him to Accra to be tested for Covid 19 at Ridge Hospital on Wednesday. They informed us that his report will be ready on Friday but we should keep him in quarantine which we did.

On Thursday night he had extreme difficulty with breathing so we called the Ambulance service and informed them of his condition. We told them the patient has tested for COVID 19 and awaiting his results so they should come along with appropriate apparel.

The ambulance team took him to Ridge Hospital around 11pm on Thursday March 26. We informed the health team at Ridge of his condition and also informed them he had earlier taken a test for Covid and awaiting results.

Late this afternoon , the Drs informed us that he is likely to be a confirmed Covid case and as such we should take steps to do a contact trace and quarantine ourselves. Sadly he passed on this evening.

These are the true facts about my fathers demise.
