  • Malaysia, Indonesia shut thousands of schools as haze worsens

Thousands of schools have been ordered closed across Malaysia and Indonesia on Thursday, affecting at least 1.7 million students, officials said, as toxic haze from rampant forest fires sent air quality plummeting.

Nearly 2,500 schools were ordered to suspend classes in Malaysia — including nearly 300 in the smog-hit capital of Kuala Lumpur — over soaring health concerns sparked by toxic haze from out-of-control blazes in Indonesia’s Sumatra and Borneo islands.

In the Malaysian city of Kuching, in Borneo island, air pollution index was recorded at 267 as of 0600 GMT, among the top 10 most polluted areas in the world, according to the World Air Quality Index. That is also categorised as “very unhealthy” by Malaysia’s environment ministry.

In Indonesia, hundreds of schools in hard-hit Riau province on Sumatra island were also set to close on Thursday, with 800 already closed in one district alone, while about 1,300 were closed in its Central Kalimantan province on Borneo.

Read:Thousands pray for rain in Indonesia as forests go up in smoke

The closures affected at least 1.7 million students in Malaysia. It was not clear how many students were forced to stay home in neighbouring Indonesia.

Jakarta is deploying thousands of security forces and water-bombing aircraft to tackle the blazes, mostly started by illegal fires set to clear land for plantations.

The fires belch smog across Southeast Asia annually, but this year’s are the worst since 2015 and have added to concerns about wildfire outbreaks worldwide exacerbating global warming.

Thursday’s school shutdown marked the first mass closure in Kuala Lumpur as air quality deteriorated to “unhealthy” or “very unhealthy” levels on an official index in many parts of peninsular Malaysia, to the east of Sumatra, with the capital’s skyline shrouded by dense smog.

Malaysia’s Sarawak state, on Borneo, was also smothered in toxic haze, as the fires hike diplomatic tensions.

Borneo is divided between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.

    ‘Major setback’

A growing number of Malaysians were suffering health problems due to the haze, with authorities saying there had been a sharp increase in outpatients at government hospitals — many suffering dry and itchy eyes.

Air quality was in the “unhealthy” range across Singapore on Thursday morning, according to the National Environment Agency, as the city state’s environment minister called it a “major setback” in the fight against climate change.

Read:Indonesian police use snake to scare Papuan man

“The forest fires in Indonesia and the resulting haze have affected the health and well-being of people in Indonesia and the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region,” Singapore’s environment chief Masagos Zulkifli said on social media.

“It is regretful that so many lives and livelihoods have been impacted.

“The amount of carbon emissions generated from the fires will present a major setback to the global fight against climate change,” he added.

The haze crisis comes as Singapore gears up to host a Formula One motor race on Sunday.

Poor visibility closed several airports in the Indonesian part of Borneo, and scores of flights have already been diverted and cancelled in the region in recent days due to the smog.

Authorities have tried to induce rain through a technique called cloud seeding in a bid to extinguish the fires in Indonesia.

But the onset of the rainy season, which usually starts in October, could be the only thing able to douse the blazes.

  • Taliban car bomb hits hospital in Afghan province of Zabul

A Taliban car bomb has killed at least 20 people and wounded 95 others when it exploded near a hospital in southern Afghanistan, officials said.

The armed group said the target of the attack on Thursday was a nearby government intelligence department building in Qalat, the capital of Zabul province.

A senior defence ministry official in Kabul said the fighters wanted to target a training base for the country’s powerful security agency the National Directorate of Security (NDS), but parked the explosives-laden vehicle outside a hospital gate nearby.

Residents, many of whom had come to see their sick family members, used shawls and blankets to carry the wounded inside the destroyed hospital building, while authorities scrambled to take the worst of the wounded to hospitals in nearby Kandahar.

Haji Atta Jan Haqbayan, a member of the provincial council in Qalat, said 20 bodies and 95 wounded had been evacuated from the blast site.

Haqbayan said the wall of the NDS building was damaged. He couldn’t say whether any personnel were among the casualties.

“The number of casualties may rise as rescue teams and people are still searching the bodies under the rubble,” he said.

Several women, children, health workers and patients in the hospital were critically injured the blast.

On Wednesday, at least 48 people were killed in the Afghan capital Kabul in two separate attacks, one of which was aimed at a campaign rally of President Ashraf Ghani.

The Taliban has warned in recent days that its fighters will intensify their campaign against the Afghan government and foreign forces to dissuade people from voting in the September 28 poll. President Ghani is running for a second five-year term.

After months of peace talks in the Qatari capital, Doha, US President Donald Trump last week abruptly called off the talks with the Taliban following the killing of an American marine in a suicide attack.

The US president, who is eager to end US involvement in the 18-year-old Afghan war, was open to withdrawing thousands of American troops from Afghanistan in exchange for security guarantees from the armed group.

The talks, which did not include the Afghan government, were intended as a prelude to wider peace negotiations.

  • Suspended PPA boss wants public hearing

The suspended Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), Adjenim Boateng Adjei, has asked the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to turn investigations of allegations of conflict of interest levelled against him into a public hearing.

A.B. Adjei was reported to the CHRAJ by President Akufo-Addo following a documentary titled ‘Contracts for Sale’ which was put together by investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, highlighting alleged procurement misconducts, which has sparked heated debate.

In the ‘Contracts for Sale’ exposé, it claimed among other things that Talent Discovery Limited (TDL), a company incorporated in June 2017 and that has links with the PPA boss, won a number of government contracts through restrictive tendering. The documentary also alleged that TDL was engaged in the sale of contracts it won.

    Read:PPA saves Ghana GHC 2.75bn Akufo-Addo

Apart from the CHRAJ, President Akufo-Addo referred A.B. Adjei to the Office of the Special Prosecutor for investigation and has since been invited by the anti-corruption body to be interrogated. However, in a letter written to CHRAJ through his lawyers, the beleaguered PPA boss said that justice would be better served if his case was held publicly instead of an in-camera hearing.

The letter further states that the request for a public hearing is necessitated by the nature of the complaint against him and the “rather devastating harm, albeit unjustified” caused him.

Mr. Adjei is confident he will be vindicated by a proper and sound enquiry into the merits of the complaints against him.

“We are of the humble opinion that the interests of justice will better be served by a public hearing of the complaint rather than an in-camera hearing,” the letter demanded.

CHRAJ wrote to A.B. Adjei for his initial comment on the complaint which he has responded, denying all the allegations levelled against him.

In his response, he stated that there was no evidence of any act or omission supporting an allegation of having discharged his duties as a public officer for the benefit of a company he has an interest in.

Read:PPA boss likely to walk free Lawyer hints

Mr. Adjei, through his lawyer, Yaw Oppong, also contended that Manasseh Azure Awuni who is the complainant “has not demonstrated how our client’s personal interests interfered with the performance of his duties and functions.”

He said the allegations in the documentary against him are simply anchored on assumptions and conjectures, and betray gross unfamiliarity with the laws on public procurement in Ghana.

The suspended PPA boss said the allegation contained in the documentary does not impinge on conflict of interest as “a claim of the sale of contracts by TDL after that company had participated in a tender not organised by the PPA and had been declared the successful tenderer not by the PPA but by other entities, has no bearing on a conflicts of interest with the duties of our client as a public officer.”

  • Assin Fosu police corruption probe: Key witnesses fail to show up before committee

The Central Regional Police Command, COP Paul Manly Awini, says some key witnesses in the Assin Fosu corruption probe failed to show up during the committee sittings.

The witnesses were expected to link some police officers to certain specific offences that were committed in the area.

Read: Change corruption image Akufo-Addo to Police Officers

“I must say that there were some key witnesses who did not show up during the committee sitting because if they did turn up it would have helped the police link some police officers to specific offences and probably that would have helped us take certain specific actions against some officers. But I must also say that the meeting with all the other stakeholders who turned up has encouraged us to take certain steps that will help improve policing in the Assin Fosu area,” COP Paul Manly Awini said.

According to Central Regional Police Commander, the recommendations of the committee will be adhered to adding that two out of the five recommendations will be handled in the region while three of them will be forwarded to the Police headquarters for advice.

“After the committee met for two weeks, they came out with five key recommendations and two of the recommendations will be implemented by the Regional Police Command while the three will be forwarded to the National Police headquarters in Accra for advice,” COP Paul Manly Awini explained in a Citi News interview.

The Regional Commander also indicated that the committee headed by Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendents Reuben Asiwoko implicated the Assin Fosu Divisional Crime Officer, DSP Daniel Dartey and four other officers in an alleged corruption case.

“The committee met with some victims, including Chiefs and other opinion leaders at Assin Fosu during their work and they have done a good job by meeting the deadline given to them,” Manly Awini said.

He was optimistic that the recommendations of the committee report will be implemented soon.

“In the next few weeks I believe the recommendations of the committee report will be  implemented and you will soon see the police inaction,” he added.

  • Who qualifies as Nyantakyi’s successor?

Interestingly, the elections roadmap which was released by the Normalisation Committee (NC) of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) last Saturday confirmed my fears as it indicated clearly that the presidential election will crown the entire electoral exercise this time around.

Per the guidelines, the new GFA President will be elected at an Extraordinary Congress on October 25 to climax the reforms. On that same day, the NC will swear in the new 12-member Executive Council (ExCo) and officially hand over its interim stewardship which was mandated by FIFA on September 13, 2018.

A careful study of the roadmap makes one thing very clear; that the elections of the various constituent bodies of the GFA will precede the presidential election, thus supporting my argument in last week’s article. That simply means some presidential aspirants might lose both the presidential seat and a chance to serve on the ExCo if they don’t play their cards well. But that is of concern to me since some of the candidates have some qualities that can help make the new ExCo tick, without necessarily occupying the big seat.

‘You can’t eat your cake and have it’, so say the sages. In that case, I expect all the aspirants to tread with cautious optimism from now till the elections. This is where I expect the power brokers and kingmakers in Ghana Football to step in.

Read:The dynamics of the GFA Presidential Elections

Between now and the elections of the constituent bodies, comprising Premier League (5 slots), Division One (3), Elite Women’s League (1) and Regional Football Associations (2), on October 24, a lot of consensus-building needs to take place among the presidential aspirants in the supreme interest of Ghana Football. Fortunately or unfortunately, we have reached a very critical stage where parochial interests have to be sacrificed for the general good of the game. And if any of the presidential candidates has Ghana Football at heart, I dont think it will be difficult to soften their stance to seek a Premier League or Division One League slot to serve on the ExCo.

To be blunt, not all the candidates who have so far declared their intention to contest, such as George Afriyie, Wilfred Osei Kweku (Palmer), Nana Yaw Amponsah, Fred Pappoe and Kurt Okraku truly qualify to become the next GFA president. I said last week that if the last GFA president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, with all his weaknesses, rose to become a CAF Vice President and a FIFA Executive Committee member, then his successor should be better than him. A high standard has been set, and the bar simply can’t be lowered.

Many a sincere member of the football fraternity will tell you that the Ghana Football brand is now in tatters. That is why we cannot entertain any jokes at this crucial stage where getting somebody who can help rebrand Ghana Football is not negotiable! We need a personality who can repair the damage and also attract the corporate world to invest in the game.

Read:How to become the next GFA President

My interaction with some top officials in the corporate world indicate that they are still interested in investing in Ghana Football, but the problem is who to trust with their money. That should be topmost agenda for football people as they head towards this historic elections. This elections should not be about friends and cronies at all! Neither should it be about money-sharing or voting for the highest bidder as I stated last week.

I don’t have a vote, but as a key stakeholder of the game and a witness of the last reforms in 2005, I have quite an experience to share when it comes to such issues. Perhaps, if the chairman of the GFA Executive Council at the time, Y.A. Ibrahim (who was the father figure then), had been elected as the president or even served on the first ExCo, things might have been different.

The good news is that, aside the self-appraisal and consensus-building, there will also be a vetting process for the presidential candidates between September 26 and October 1. And to give a level playing field for all, the NC has made room for appeal for any disqualified candidate from October 2 to 4, after which the final list will be published on October 8.

Read:Next GFA president must be of highest integrity, unifier Coach Sarpong

But the point is, the presidential election should not be reckoned as a life and death affair for any of the candidates and their supporters. Elections are all about ideas and quality one brings to the table. If you believe in yourself and think life still goes in case you lose, you will not try to influence anybody with money to vote for you.

That reminds me of the advise given by the Board chairman of Hearts of Oak at the last SWAG Awards. The astute businessman and majority shareholder of Hearts cautioned delegates not to vote for any candidate who bribes them with money. His reason was simple: that those candidates who operate that way will find every means to get the money they invested in the campaign back when elected into office. That is food for thought from a wise king and an acclaimed businessmen.

A few weeks ago, I stressed on the need for the congressmen to vote for a unifier and a father figure who can be respected by all members of the football family and the whole nation. I still maintain that stand because that is what is lacking in Ghana Football at this point in time.

I pray such a character emerges by the close of nominations on Friday. If that happens, I will come out boldly to declare my preferred choice next week. That is a pledge!

  • No amount of money sharing can win you Damongo seat – NDC chides NPP’s candidate

The National Democratic Congress in the Damongo constituency has taken a swipe at the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Lawyer Abu Jinapor, describing his chances of winning the Damongo seat as very thin on the ground.

In a statement signed by its Communication Director, Mr.Mumuni Yahaya, the NDC said it was reckless for the “sole tyrant of a candidate who works at the flagstaff house to flood his posters at undesignated locations, such as signpost and speed limits.

This they said was endangering the lives of drivers and pedestrians as it reduces visibility and breaches major traffic regulations.

According to the NDC, the Damongo seat is very safe and in good custody of the incumbent MP, hon. Adam Mutawakilu, adding that “no amount of money and Kenkey sharing can save the face of NPP from defeat in the constituency”.

    Read full statement below:

    For immediate release

    NDC Damongo Constituency Communication Bureau

    16th September 2019.

Desperation clouds right reasoning of Damongo sole NPP candidate as reckless posting of posters endangers lives of passengers and pedestrians

The attention of the Communication Bureau of the National Democratic Congress of Damongo constituency has been drawn to the reckless posting of NPP parliamentary candidate’s posters at unauthorised locations ahead of their parliamentary primaries.

These posters and flyers which have been flooded along the major streets and towns of Damongo constituency, have carelessly been mounted on sign posts and speed limits that are supposed to direct pedestrians and motorist.

Specific mention can be made of Buyanto,Achubunyo through to Tailorpe along the Damongo to Tamale road.

This unfortunate development is posing a danger to drivers and users of the road alike,as it reduces visibility and breaches major traffic regulations.

Drivers, pedestrians and residents alike have raised red flags about the situation and as a responsible opposition, we deem it very necessary to call on the appropriate authority to act as a matter of public interest.

All effort to get the ‘Buipe borger who is soo desperate to capture power in Damongo at the drop of blood to take off these posters has proven futile.

It’s important to note that, this singular act is not only against traffic regulations, but is highly illegal and breeches common sense. And the NPP Candidate who is tauted to be a lawyer should have known better…Does he expect us to elect him as an MP with this attitude of blatant disregard for the common law.

It’s important to also remind the sole NPP candidate(or so he calls himself), who has succeeded in buying himself into the constituency that, the road which he is consciously making unsafe today with his desperate tactics was constructed by the NDC administration.

Also, the modern streetlights which came along with the said road project have become dysfunctional for months now without any effort to replace the faulty lamps.

We are also aware that an amount of 40 million dollars which was designated after the construction of the road (Damongo-Fulfulso road) for routine maintenence work has since been squandered by the current administration without a single of such maintenence work happening.

It should be a worry to the NPP that this “sole tyrant of a candidate who works at the flagstaff has shown clearly that he has no faith and hope in the chances of his boss, Nana Akuffo-Addo. Reasons why he is going round campaigning and trying to buy the conscience of the people to vote for him as MP and endorse John Mahama, the NDC candidate as president. This is a sign of ungratefulness!

Read: Jinapor, Damongo MP clash over rural electrification project in West Gonja

It’s important to remind the NPP and its “Money bag ” that, posters don’t win elections. The Damongo seat is safe and in good custody of hon. Adam Mutawakilu (Galus).

No amount of money sharing and Kenkey sharing can safe the face of NPP from defeat. The people of Damongo constituency are worth more than money. It seems the whole money in the flagstaff house is brought to Damongo, but that will not still safe NPP from a humiliating defeat in the constituency.

We can assure the NPP and their desperate candidate that we’ll resist any attempt to endanger the lives of constituents in their wild thirst for power.

We wish to once again call on the appropriate authorities, particularly, the MTTU department of the Ghana Police Service, city authorities to act urgently on the matter in the larger interest.

An Australian hiker who was injured in a 6m (20ft) fall down a waterfall says he had to “carry” his broken leg while crawling for two days to be rescued.

Neil Parker, 54, was bushwalking alone near Brisbane on Sunday when he slipped, leaving his wrist broken and lower leg “clean snapped in half”.

After losing his phone in the process, he decided his best chance of being rescued was to crawl to a clearing.

He made it there and was spotted – but only after an agonisingly slow journey.

“I’d get about a metre, a metre-and-a-half, each time before I had to stop and take a break,” he told reporters from his hospital bed on Wednesday.

Mr Parker had been planning a three-hour hike at Mount Nebo when rocks gave way beneath his feet and he tumbled down the waterfall.

“I slid about 20 feet, cartwheeled and slammed into the rock and then landed in the creek on the bottom,” he said.

“And I thought, ‘the only way to get rescued is self-rescue.’”

An experienced bushwalker, Mr Parker had packed first aid supplies including bandages which he combined with hiking sticks to splint his leg.

“I had to carry my leg – and legs are very heavy when they’re not connected to anything – and [I was] trying to pick it up and get over rock and then use this elbow and this arm and just constantly struggling,” he said.

He said thinking of his family gave him the mental strength to keep going, saying: “I wanted to be around for my kids.”

  • Spain to hold fourth election in 4 years as talks fail

Spain will hold its fourth election in four years in November after last-minute initiatives to break a months-long impasse failed to achieve a breakthrough – but there is no guarantee the repeat poll will make the formation of a government any easier.

“Spain is bound to hold new elections on November 10,” acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told a news conference late on Tuesday, after King Felipe VI met party leaders and concluded there was no candidate with enough support in the country’s deeply fragmented legislature to form a coalition.

Spain has been in political limbo since Sanchez’s Socialists won the most votes in a parliamentary election in April but fell short of a majority in the 350-seat Parliament to govern on their own. That left Sanchez dependent on support from other parties to be confirmed prime minister for another term.

Despite months of on-and-off contacts, Sanchez’s negotiations with Podemos, the Socialist party’s leftist rival and most likely partner, collapsed. He was also unable to reach a deal with the conservative Popular Party (PP) and the centre-right Ciudadanos, which refused to help him to form a minority government by abstaining in a confidence vote.

Read:Spain offers closer ports to stranded migrant ship

Sanchez had until next Monday to be confirmed or else fresh elections would be automatically called for November 10, but his talks with other parties to try to win their backing have been fruitless.

On Tuesday, after wrapping up two days of talks with party leaders, King Felipe VI said in a statement that he would not put forward a new candidate to seek the confidence of parliament to become prime minister because no party leader had majority support in the assembly.

For his part, Sanchez blamed his rivals for the deadlock, saying he had tried “by all possible means but they made it impossible for us”.

The 47-year-old urged Spaniards to “speak more clearly” when they vote again by increasing the Socialists’ majority and give the country the “stability” needed to “face the great challenges” before it.

    Political instability

Spain, the fourth-largest eurozone economy, faces several problems for which it needs a stable government: an ongoing separatist movement in its northeastern region of Catalonia, high unemployment, low wages and job insecurity.

Read:European heatwave: Spain battles major Catalonia wildfire

The country has been gripped by political instability since the December 2015 elections ended the traditional two-party system with the emergence of Podemos and Ciudadanos. Meanwhile, the rise of far-right upstart Vox, which entered parliament following April’s election, has further complicated the political picture.

Polls suggest the Socialists would win more seats in a repeat election but still fall short of a majority.

“A new election would return another fragmented parliament, which means the country would probably not have a government before the end of the year,” Antonio Barroso, managing director with Teneo, a global advisory firm, told AFP news agency.

    ‘Huge historical mistake’

Sanchez failed twice in July to be confirmed by the assembly after he was unable to reach an agreement with Podemos over the formation of a coalition government.

The Socialists had initially agreed to form a coalition, albeit reluctantly, with Podemos, offering several government portfolios, but the far-left party refused, saying the posts did not carry enough political clout.

Read:Spain Totalán search: Body of missing boy found

The Socialists restarted their talks with Podemos but the negotiations again hit an impasse.

Another potential solution was raised on Monday by Ciudadanos, which laid out its conditions for abstaining from any vote of confidence which would enable Sanchez to be confirmed without requiring the support of Podemos.

The business-friendly party led by Albert Rivera had until then refused to extend any support to Sanchez.

Rivera proposed that both Ciudadanos and the PP jointly abstain during any investiture vote. But the PP, whose votes would be needed for this option to work, rejected it.

In a tweet, Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias said Sanchez has made a “huge historical mistake forcing another election because of an obsession with hoarding absolute power”.

Sanchez came to power in June 2018 by winning a surprise no-confidence vote against conservative predecessor Mariano Rajoy, of the PP, with the support of Podemos as well as Catalan separatist parties and Basque nationalists.

  • Phar Rangers reinstated in Ghana National Division One League

The Ghana Football Association has reinstated Phar Rangers as National Division One following their recent legal win at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), GHANAsoccernet.com can report.

The Ghana FA has reinstated the club in the Division One League on the instruction of the global adjudicatory chamber.

“The Ghana Football Association acting on the instruction of the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) would like to confirm that your Club has been reinstated in the Division One Zone Three League, a letter signed by Ghana FA deputy general secretary Alex Asante read

“By this development, Phar Rangers Football Club will be eligible to participate in the 2019/2020 Division One Zone Three League when it commence.”

Read:GFA slapped with $ 6,170 cost to Phar Rangers for bogus ruling

Despite finishing 12th on the Zone III table at the end the 2016/17 season, Phar Rangers were relegated to the Eastern Region Division Two League with Okyeman Planners who finished 13th earning a slot to maintain their status in the DOL.

This was because Planners won a protest against relegated Okwawu United for failing to pay a fine after their week 29th clash.

But Phar Rangers argued that since Okwawu United failed to pay their fine before their week six league clash, they lose all points in their matches from week 7 to week 30.

Meaning they would also profit from three points and three goals to survive.

It took the Ghana FA Disciplinary Committee 48 days to respond to Phar Rangers’ protest with the flimsy excuse that they have no jurisdiction over the case.

Rangers exhausted all the judicial processes at the FA before heading to Switzerland for review.

The CAS ruling read: ”The appeal filled by Phar Rangers FC against the decision of the Appeals Committee of the Ghana Football Association of 23 February 2018 is upheld.

”The decision of the Appeals Committee of Ghana Football Association of 23 February 2018 is set aside and replaced by this award.

”In the game between Phar Rangers FC and Okwawu United of 16 July 2017, Phar Rangers FC is declared the forfeit winner by 3:0, Phar Rangers FC, therefore, remained in the GFA Division I League in the next football season

”The costs of the arbitration, to be determined and served to the parties by the CAS Court Office, shall be borne by the Ghana Football Association.

”The Ghana Football Association is ordered to pay an amount of CHF 6,000 to Phar Rangers as a contribution to the costs and expenses incurred by Phar Rangers FC in connection with these arbitration proceedings.”

  • Afghanistan war: Taliban tell Trump their ‘doors are open’

The Taliban have told the BBC that their “doors are open” should US President Donald Trump want to resume peace talks in the future.

Chief negotiator Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai insisted negotiation remained “the only way for peace in Afghanistan” during an exclusive interview.

Mr Stanikzai’s words came a week after Mr Trump declared the talks “dead”.

Earlier this month, the two sides had appeared close to a deal to end the 18-year conflict.

Mr Trump had even invited senior Taliban leaders and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to meet at Camp David on 8 September.

But a Taliban attack in the Afghan capital Kabul on 6 September, which killed a US soldier and 11 others, prompted Mr Trump to pull out, saying the group “probably don’t have the power to negotiate” if they were unable to agree to a ceasefire during talks.

Read:More Americans will die after Trump abruptly ends Afghan talks, Taliban say

Late on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement condemning recent Taliban attacks, saying the group “must begin to demonstrate a genuine commitment to peace”.

Mr Stanikzai dismissed American concerns, telling the BBC the Taliban had done nothing wrong.

“They killed thousands of Talibans according to them,” he told the BBC’s chief international correspondent, Lyse Doucet. “But in the meantime, if one [US] soldier has been killed that doesn’t mean they should show that reaction because there is no ceasefire from both sides.”

“From our side, our doors are open for negotiations,” he added. “So we hope the other side also rethink their decision regarding the negotiation.”

    What did the deal include?

The full and exact details are not known.

However, Zalmay Khalilzad, Washington’s top negotiator, revealed some details of the agreement “in principle” – including the US withdrawing 5,400 troops from Afghanistan within 20 weeks – during a television interview on 3 September.

In exchange for the troop withdrawal, the Taliban were willing to pledge that Afghanistan would never again be used as a base for foreign terrorism.

Mr Stanikzai told the BBC a ceasefire between the Taliban and foreign troops would have come into effect after the agreement was signed.

Read:As many as 100 Afghan security forces killed in Taliban attack

However, no such ceasefire would have existed between the Taliban and Afghan government forces, he said.

The Taliban – who are now in control of more territory than at any point before the 2001 US-led invasion – do not recognise the legitimacy of President Ashraf Ghani’s administration. They have refused to hold direct talks with the Afghan government until a US deal is agreed.

Mr Stanikzai said intra-Afghan talks would have started on 23 September, had a deal been reached, and would have included discussions about a wider ceasefire.

He also confirmed that the Taliban had approached both Russia and China for help in the peace negotiations.

Meanwhile the Afghan national security advisor said that Taliban “intimidation tactics” would not succeed.

“The only way they can see peace in Afghanistan is by negotiating with the Afghan government,” Dr Hamdullah Mohibt told the BBC.

He added: “Open discussions with our neighbours, those who are sponsoring and supporting the Taliban – that needs to be at the front of our discussions, not the back of it.”

  • GFA Presidency: Setting the record straight on intermediary brouhaha

In the year 2017, a highly spirited, littered, knowledgeable and effervescent young man burst into the footballing circles and declares his intention to contest GFA Presidential polls in 2019 by releasing a solid manifesto captioned “Empowering the Football People and Decoding the Football People Tag” which details his vision for Ghana Football.

The President of Phar Rangers Football Club, Nana Yaw Amponsah who holds a Master’s Degree (LLM) in Sports Law and Practice from the Leicester De Montfort University in the United Kingdom, is the only presidential aspirant till date to have brought his working document which is a living organism capable of growth.

The highlight of his manifesto which hinges on 3 thematic points namely :Restoring the integrity of the game; development of grassroots football and commercialisation of our local league includes policies such as Transfer Fund for Clubs, 64 Training Pitches for All League Clubs, One League Centre One Ambulance, Enrolment of our leagues on international statistical and video analytical platforms, Establishment of regional academies using existing SHS, Branding Women’s Football, Training of developmental Coaches,Referees , Players, Schools and Colleges, Integrating Corporate Ghana, Involving other Stakeholders such as Fans and Media.

Read:How to become the next GFA President

Just as Jesus Christ encumbered resistance from the Pharisees and Sadducees when they realised Jesus’ fame was soaring high and the multitude were believing him to be the Messiah, so is Nana Yaw encountering from his detractors who now see his sermon on why he wants to be the GFA Capo and how he intends to transform the state of our local game have been accepted by the members of the Football family, are now working relentlessly to impute a wrong doing on his person.

The opponents see him as the most likely candidate to ascend the throne since he is the only candidate who cannot be associated with the current dying state of our game.He is the true symbol of change from the old order. The only way they can find fault about him to deny Ghanaians of his transparent, effective and efficient leadership is to brand him as an intermediary, a role he abandoned in 2018.

The opponents are imputing the following unfounded and unscrupulous allegations against Nana Yaw Amponsah:

    1. That he was registered by the English FA to represent players in 2008. This is incorrect . He was rather licensed by the GFA as FA licensed agent in 2008 to 2013 and later became an English FA intermediary in 2014.

    2. As of February 2019, Nana Yaw was still listed by the English FA as an intermediary. The response is, The English FA updated their intermediary list in April every year, so Nana Yaw’s de-registration as an intermediary in September 2018 was expected to be de-listed from the English FA website in April 2019. But in practice, he ceased to be an intermediary in September 2018 when he did not renew his license thereof.

Read:Next GFA president must be of highest integrity, unifier Coach Sarpong

    3. That Nana Yaw signed a contract with Abdul Latif Abubakar on September 30, 2018 for 2 years, thus he still holds an intermediary position. A microscopic look into the new FIFA intermediary role which began on April 1, 2015 requires that all contracts should be entered into the national registration system. And that if a contract is not entered into the system after 5 days, it makes the contract invalid. This contract failed to meet the required registration time and was not registered in the system.

    4. That he transfers players and takes commission between (10-15)% which is contrary to FIFA rule. They ground their argument on Article 7(3)(a) of FIFA regulation on payments to intermediaries which states: the total amount of remuneration per transaction due to intermediaries who have been engaged to act on a player’s behalf should not exceed 3% of the player’s basic gross income for the entire duration of the relevant employment contract.

They cunningly quote the above article in isolation without reference to the Stem Article 7(3) which states that while taking into account the relevant national regulations and any mandatory provisions of national and international laws, and as a RECOMMENDATION, players and clubs MAY adopt the following benchmarks: This Article clearly shows that the remuneration to intermediaries captured in Article 7(3)(a) is not MANDATORY but SUGGESTIVE. In our part of the world where intermediaries cater for airfares of players for trials abroad, their accommodation and feeding until they secure the supposed contracts, it will appear unreasonable to say that they should be entitled to only the suggested 3% commission by FIFA . However, the agreed percentage in the contract between the client and intermediary is always the case.

Read:Lawyer Naa Odofoley Nortey set to head GFA Elections Committee

    5. They also attempt to imply that he doesn’t qualify to contest because of the point 2 in the declaration by intermediaries which states: I declare that I am currently not holding a position of official, as defined in point 11 of the Definitions section of the FIFA Statutes, nor will I hold such a position in the foreseeable future. For Christ sake, this is a requisition to become or to be registered as an intermediary which he satisfied in 2014 when he wanted to be so. As of that time, he was not holding any official position and couldn’t have foreseen that he was going to be a club president in 2016.

*From the foregoing analyses, a clear distinction should be made between the old FIFA/FA licensee which existed in 1996 until it was extinguished by the new intermediary which came into effect on April 1, 2015.

That Associations must be satisfied that in carrying out the activities of the intermediary, the intermediary contracted by a club and/or a player has no contractual relationship with leagues, associations, confederations or FIFA that could lead to a potential conflict of interest. Intermediaries are precluded from implying directly or indirectly, that such a contractual relationship with leagues, associations, confederations or FIFA exists in connection with their activities.

Read:The dynamics of the GFA Presidential Elections

It is jurisdictional. Thus an intermediary in England can be in a potential conflict of interest situation with the leagues and association of England BUT NOT that of Ghana. Similarly, he cannot transfer players from Ghana to Slovenia if he is not an intermediary in Slovenia unless he registers in Slovenia to enable him undertake the transaction.

If you hate the duker, you must admire it for its swiftness. Nana Yaw Amponsah is a God fearing person who truly understands the football business, he is deeply connected locally and internationally to the movers and shakers of the football family, thus enhancing his chances of securing funding and sponsorship to improve the quality and standard of the game, he is a corporate person who will decode the Football People Tag and bring all and sundry on board to develop the game, he has the arsenal to resurrect colts football from grass to grace, he will empower clubs to be at a pedestal to enable them have huge share of this global multi-billion dollar industry, and has already started empowering our women in the game.

He recently introduced a Turkish company Fitcom who have signed sponsorship contracts with over 40 clubs in Division 1 , Premier and Female Premier Leagues.

Nana Yaw, ignore the naysayers and detractors, soldier on until you get to the promised land. Posterity will be the best judge. Most Ghanaians are behind you.

  • Israel election result too close to call

Exit polls following Israel’s second general election in five months suggest the result is too close to call.

The centrist Blue and White alliance of former military chief Benny Gantz is projected to win between 32 and 34 seats, and PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party 30 to 33 seats.

Yisrael Beiteinu party leader Avigdor Lieberman may end up being kingmaker.

Mr Netanyahu called the snap vote after failing to form a governing coalition in the wake of an election in April.

Negotiations on the formation of a new coalition are expected to start as soon as the preliminary results come on Wednesday morning.

Speaking to supporters early on Wednesday, Mr Netanyahu said: “We’ve all been through a difficult election campaign.

“We are still waiting for the actual results but one thing is clear. The state of Israel is at a historical point, we faced great opportunities and great challenges.”

Read:Israel names street after Ghanaian Major General

Mr Gantz sounded more optimistic when he spoke to supporters a little earlier.

“Of course we’ll wait for the real results, but it seems we have accomplished our mission,” he said.

“The unity and reconciliation is ahead of us.”

What are the exit polls saying? A revised exit poll released by Israel’s public broadcaster Kan early on Wednesday projected that Blue and White would win 32 seats and Likud 31 in the 120-seat Knesset.

In third place was the Israeli Arab Joint List with 13 seats; followed by Mr Lieberman’s secular nationalist Yisrael Beitenu party with nine; the ultra-Orthodox Shas and United Torah Judaism parties with nine and eight respectively; the right-wing Yamina party with seven, and the left-wing Labour-Gesher and Democratic Union alliances with six and five respectively.

Read:Israelis vote in second general election in five months

Channel 12 News put Blue and White and Likud level on 32 seats, while an updated poll Channel 13 News predicted that Blue and White would win 32 seats and Likud 30.

There was a muted response at Likud’s election night headquarters in Tel Aviv as the exit polls were released.

Hundreds of chairs for party supporters remained empty, as activists were kept outside the hall and leaders digested the numbers.

Likud’s foreign affairs director noted that Israeli exit polls had got things wrong in the past. Last time, they underestimated the number of votes for Likud and also for some of the religious parties allied to Mr Netanyahu.

“There is no point starting to work out a coalition based on these numbers as they will change,” Eli Hazan said.

But Blue and White was “cautiously optimistic” that Israel would get new leadership, spokeswoman Melody Sucharewicz told the Times of Israel.

  • Baby oil and shampoo – World Cup remedies for Japan’s weather

Shampoo and baby oil have become essentials in the training kit in the build-up to the Rugby World Cup as Japan’s unpredictable weather threatens to have a significant influence on the tournament.

The prospect of snap changes from dry to wet and back again, and in intense humidity, have coaches working on plans to cover every scenario.

“The big thing will be the ball. That’ll be the constant thing. The humidity will be high and the ball will be wet so skills will be really important,” says All Blacks coach Steve Hansen.

Hansen, on a mission for New Zealand’s third consecutive World Cup win, has been happy just to soak the ball in water during training sessions to mimic wet conditions.

But other teams have taken a more out-of-the-box approach.

Warren Gatland has admitted to using baby oil to make the balls slippery during Wales training sessions, while Scotland have turned to hair care, applying shampoo and conditioner to replicate a sweaty ball.

Read:Powerful typhoon makes landfall in Japan, snarling traffic in Tokyo

“The sweat is more of an issue. The wet is obviously not ideal, but the sweat is difficult to deal with,” assistant coach Mike Blair said.

England coach Eddie Jones, who has forecast an England-New Zealand final, has made Japan’s notorious autumn weather a central element in his planning over the past four years.

Having previously coached in Japan, the Australian-born England mentor has marked physical and mental resilience as key elements he wanted from players in his World Cup squad.

    – ‘Shocking conditions’ –

England?s hooker Jamie George explained: “We have buckets (of water) on the side of the pitch and we put the ball in that before we throw it.”

But there have been no novel training tricks for Ireland, even though there is the prospect of torrential rain when they play their first game against Scotland on Sunday.

Loose forward Rhys Ruddock says the world’s number one-ranked side are quite at home in the wet.

Read:Japanese whalers set sail for commercial hunting

“We’ve had some big performances in the past in shocking conditions so it’s not dampening excitement for the match,” he said.

However, the issue for Ireland was adapting to what could be varying weather conditions during the 80 minutes of playing time, and which could prove crucial.

“I would think we’re going to have to prepare for all outcomes, in terms of the weather,” Ruddock said.

“We might just have to adjust things on the day. We’ve got a plan for best-placed scenario and worst-placed scenario, with as little tweaking in between as we have to.

“The guys who are making those decisions on the day will have options depending on how the game’s going, what the score is, the time on the clock and the weather definitely comes into it.”

The forecast for the opening weekend of the tournament is for temperatures around 22 degrees Celsius (72 Fahrenheit) with fine weather interspersed with heavy rain.

Two people died when Typhoon Faxai battered Japan earlier this month, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes without power and disrupting travel for some arriving World Cup teams.

  • Missing girls: Unravel why they were killed – Ex-CID boss to Police

The confirmation of the deaths of four missing girls from Takoradi should pave the way for further investigations, a former director of the Police Criminal Investigations Department has said.

According to COP Bright Oduro (retired), these investigations should focus on why, when, where, how and who killed the girls.

“Now that it has been disclosed these are the girls, we need to conduct further investigations,” Bright Oduro told Roland Walker, host of the AM Show on JoyNews, Tuesday.

The Ag. Inspector of General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh, said at a press conference Monday, that the results of the DNA test on remains retrieved in Takoradi are those of the said girls, who had gone missing more than a year ago.

Identifying the remains should not bring closure to the issue, Bright Oduro believes it should rather pave the way for more investigations to ascertain who is behind that heinous crime of murder.

He also insists, it is important to establish the purpose for which the girls were killed and how they were killed.

Even more, where the killings took place.

“The police need to have further investigations to ascertain who killed the girls and why were they killed, how were they killed when were they killed.

  • Why are South Korean politicians shaving their heads?

South Korea’s opposition leader has become the latest politician to publicly shave his head in a protest against the government.

Hwang Kyo-ahn had his hair entirely shaved off in front of supporters and journalists outside the presidential palace on Monday evening.

The protest is over a new justice minister, Cho Kuk, whose family is embroiled in corruption allegations.

Last week, two female MPs shaved their heads over the same controversy.

All three are from the conservative end of the political spectrum and oppose the current government under President Moon Jae-in.

They want Mr Cho to resign or be sacked.

Read:South Korea confirms first swine fever outbreak

    What are the protests about?

Cho Kuk, a former law professor and aide to Mr Moon, took office last week as justice minister.

But his critics are angry that he was nominated for the post by Mr Moon despite ongoing accusations of academic fraud and financial crimes against his family.

His wife, also a professor, has been indicted for allegedly forging material which helped their daughter get into university and secure scholarships, something which has angered other university students.

Prosecutors are also looking into investments into an allegedly dubious equity fund linked to another relative. In recent weeks, prosecutors carried out several raids linked to Ms Cho’s family.

In his confirmation hearing last Friday, Mr Cho expressed his “deepest apologies to the younger generation” over the alleged perks his daughter received. But said he said he wanted to get on with reforms to the justice system.

Mr Moon has stressed there has been no confirmation of illegal action and said it would be bad precedent not to appoint someone solely on the basis of allegations.

But the case has caused a public debate about class privilege in South Korea, which has been rocked by corruption scandals over recent years.

The previous government was toppled over corruption allegations and former President Park Geun-hye is currently serving prison time for bribery and abuse of power.

Read:South Korean doomsday cult leader jailed for six years

Mr Hwang served as prime minister under former President Pak – some observers have suggested his public stunt was in part motivated to undermine current President Moon Jae-in.

    Why shave the head?

South Korea has a long tradition of hair shaving as a form of protest.

The act is rooted in traditional Confucian teaching, and has historically been seen as a way of demonstrating commitment to a cause.

During the 1960s and 70s, when South Korea was under military dictatorship, dissidents would often shave their heads as a sign of resistance.

Over the past decades, activists and politicians have used it as way to protest.

In 2018, women shaved their head at a march against the rise of spy cameras being placed in toilets and changing rooms to secretly film women.

Two years before, more than 900 South Koreans shaved their heads in a show of protests at a US anti-missile system

In 2007, hundreds of residents of Icheon City shaved their heads over a controversy where to build a new industrial plant.

Mr Hwang’s public stand took place outside the presidential palace, the Blue House, on Monday evening.

Referring to Mr Cho as “criminal” he urged him to stand down.

He told the crowd watching: “I’m here to pledge my determination by shaving my head. I will not step back.”

His protest drew wide attention on social media. He made it into the top 10 trending list on Naver, South Korea’s number one search engine.

  • China signals veto in standoff over UN Afghanistan mission

China and the United States are deadlocked over a United Nations Security Council resolution to extend the world body’s political mission in Afghanistan, with Beijing signalling it will cast a veto because there is no reference to its global Belt and Road infrastructure project, diplomats said on Monday.

A planned vote by the 15-member Security Council to renew the mission, known as UNAMA, was delayed from Monday to Tuesday to allow for further negotiations. The mission’s mandate expires on Tuesday. To pass, a resolution needs nine votes in favour and no vetoes by the US, France, China, Russia and Britain.

Ahead of the postponement, diplomats said China was expected to veto a resolution – drafted by Germany and Indonesia – that did not reference the Belt and Road project. China’s UN mission did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Read:US-China trade war and its impact on Africa

China was then planning to propose a vote on a short draft resolution, known as a technical rollover, to allow the mission to keep operating, diplomats said. But they added that it could fail to get the nine votes needed to pass because several council members were considering abstaining.

The UN mission, which was established in 2002, is helping Afghanistan prepare for September 28 elections and is pushing for peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

Talks between the US and the Taliban on a US military withdrawal fell apart earlier this month.

There are 14,000 US troops and thousands of others from NATO in the country, 18 years after a US-led coalition invaded following the September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda attacks on the US.

The UNAMA mandate is renewed annually by the Security Council. The resolutions in 2016, 2017 and 2018 all included a reference welcoming and urging efforts like China’s Belt and Road initiative to facilitate trade and transit.

But when it came time to extend the mandate again in March, the US and other Western council members wanted the language removed, sparking a standoff with China. The council ended up adopting a six-month technical rollover to allow the mission to keep operating.

Read:Trade war: US set to hit China with new wave of tariffs

At the time, acting US Ambassador Jonathan Cohen slammed China for holding “the resolution hostage” by insisting “on making it about Chinese national political priorities rather than the people of Afghanistan.”

He criticised Beijing’s Belt and Road initiative – to link China by sea and land through an infrastructure network with southeast and central Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa – for “known problems with corruption, debt distress, environmental damage, and lack of transparency.”

At a Security Council meeting on Afghanistan last week, Cohen referred to the continuing impasse with China.

“We strongly believe this mandate is too important at this moment to have one Security Council member deny consensus for reasons having nothing to do with UNAMA,” Cohen said.

China’s UN ambassador, Zhang Jun, did not specifically mention the negotiations on the UNAMA resolution, but said Beijing was working with Afghanistan to advance “the Belt and Road construction to actively support the Afghan rebuilding and its reintegration into the regional economic development.”

  • Adongo threatens to sue Bank of Ghana for flouting its own laws

Isaac Adongo, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, has threatened to sue the Bank of Ghana (BoG) over what he called its non-compliance with its own laws.

In the letter to the Attorney General written by his lawyers and sighted by citinewsroom.com, Mr. Adongo suggested that it was ironical for the Bank of Ghana to cleanup the financial sector with its formulated law but “[the BoG] has itself fallen foul of its obligations under the Bank of Ghana Act.”

Read: Bank of Ghana sacks staff for accepting over GHC400k bribe in Sibton deal

The lawyers referenced section 53 of the Bank of Ghana Act which requires the BoG to submit a report to Parliament once every six months on all foreign exchange received and payment and transfers outside Ghana, the conduct of activities under its mandate and any other relevant functions.

But Mr. Adongo stated that “the Bank of Ghana has either failed and or neglected to comply with this statutory reporting requirement and is therefore in clear breach of the Bank of Ghana Act.”

“In the circumstances, our client instructs us to serve notice, which we hereby do, that he intends to proceed to court to compel the Bank of Ghana to comply within the law within one month of receipt of this letter by your office.”

Mr. Adongo had penned an article on this issue where he called the BoG “a lawless entity.”

He said the Central Bank was setting bad examples for corporate governance in the financial sector.

“You will recall that by May 2018, BoG was in breach of its obligation to publish its audited financial statements by 31st March. I subsequently drew attention to this breach and it was subsequently rectified.”

  • Stock market loses GH¢4.56 bn in capital in 9-months

By the end of trading on Thursday, September 12, 2019, the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) had lost about GH¢4.56 billion of capital since the beginning of the year due to the bearish performance of the market.

The market closed on Thursday with total market capitalization of GHc 56.95 billion and a year-to-date fall in the composite index (GSE-CI) of -12.27 percent, after opening the year with capitalization of GH¢61.51 billion.

The GSE composite index (GSE-CI) continue to decline having recorded a year to date drop of -12.27 percent, and this included a -9.90 percent year to date decline for the financial stocks index (GSE-FSI), as at Thursday, September 12, 2019.

Read:Ghana Stock Exchange to transform to company limited by shares

Currently, the market seems to be in a free-fall, with no sign of recovery at the moment.

The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) measures the weighted average price changes of all the equities listed on the market; and the GSE Financial Stock Index (GSE-FSI) tracks the weighted average price changes of financial services equities.

The slowdown in the performance of the financial services industry has largely been attributed to the decline in the GSE-FSI.

However, the decline in the GSE-FSI since the beginning of this year has not been as fast compared with the decline of the GSE-CI and so the data indicates there are other factors at work too.

An analyst with UMB stockbrokers, Mr. Ben Ackah indicated that the market is not expected to crawl back to a positive range in terms of the year-to-date figures any time soon.

A positive position may be recorded, unless the market receives some new spectacular information, he stated.

“Either too, I do not expect a significant decline, because a lot of the information out there has already been priced into the market, at the moment. That is why there has been the decline,” Mr. Ackah stated.

As at the close of trading on Thursday, 21 stocks across the market had recorded drop in prices this year out a total number of 33 stocks. This includes seven stocks in the financial services sector.

  • Madina Zongo pitch meets FIFA standards – Zongo Minister

The Minister of Inner-City and Zongo Development, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid has assured residents of Madina Zongo that a football pitch being constructed in their community meets the dimensions specified by FIFA and it would be fit to host Ghana Premier League matches.

The Minister shortly after a tour of the facility located at the Libya Quarters area of Madina told pressmen that the facility which measures 90 metres (length/touchline) x 62.5 metres (width/goal line) falls withing the FIFA certified range.

He said he had seen a viral social media video by some youth who allege that the pitch is not fit to host second division matches involving Madina United because it is not an 11-a-side football pitch.

“First of all, that is palpably false, that is not true. As you know by now, this is a FIFA certified pitch. FIFA has a minimum and maximum range for every pitch certified for competitive football matches and this pitch falls squarely withing the FIFA range,” Dr Abdul-Hamid said.

Read:Astro Turf: Kyebi, Madina and Walewale to be completed by mid-October

He stated that the world football governing body FIFA has two specified dimensions for its standard of football pitches which measure a minimum of 90metres (length/touchline) x 45 metres (width/goal line) and a maximum of 120 metres x 90 metres).

Africa legends Night “So, this pitch is a FIFA certified pitch, it qualifies for every kind of match that we want to play on it… All of the technical experts from the Ghana Football Association has certified that the pitch is a FIFA standard pitch and fit for purpose,” he added.

He mentioned that the pitch which would seat 1,200 persons when it is completed by mid-October 2019 would host President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and two premier league teams when it is inaugurated.

Dr Abdul-Hamid who said he was demotivated to bring any more projects to Madina, accused the youth in the said viral video of being motivated by partisan interests hence their decision to criticise the project with misinformation.

He was accompanied on the tour by the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Perry Curtis Kwabla Okudzeto and the project contractor Robert Tetteh Coleman, the CEO of Wembley Sports Complex.

However, some youth who were present during the tour of the project said they were shocked that they were being dragged into politics because they complained about the size of the pitch.

“It is painful that we are being dragged into NDC and NPP politics because we complained about the size of the pitch, why would we fight against a nice project because of politics?,” a youth who gave his name as Alhaji Tanko said.

The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Perry Curtis Kwabla Okudzeto maintained that the Sports Ministry had sent its own technical experts to inspect the pitch and they have certified that it is a FIFA standard facility.

He said the Madina pitch was a standard community pitch meant for developing local talents and should not be compared to national facilities such as the Accra Sports Stadium and the Baba Yara Stadium.

Facilities at the Madina pitch which is expected to be completed in October include; a multi-purpose outdoor court, a children’s playground, a five-a-side artificial pitch and changing rooms.

  • Sandema SHTS Riots: Autopsy report indicts police for students death

An autopsy conducted at the Tamale Teaching Hospital on Nashiru Jibril, the 17-year-old student who was reportedly shot dead during student unrest at the Sandema Senior High Technical School in the Builsa North District of the Upper East Region in July this year, shows that the boy died through gunshot wounds on his chest.

Master Jibril died on July 16, 2019, after sustaining gunshot wounds when police were called in by the school authorities to quell the violence that erupted in the school between the cadet corps and some of the students when the cadet tried to enforce some rules and regulations of the school.

But the police had earlier indicated that they fired “rubber bullets and tear gas” to control the disturbances on the school premises.

Mr Adams said “what is even worrying to the entire family is that since this unfortunate incident apparently due to the negligence of the police who are supposed to protect the lives of citizens, the family has been waiting for the police to pay them a visit, but for almost two months now that has not happened”.

The spokesperson pointed out that “the police could have fired warning shots or rubber bullets” instead of live bullets because the students were not armed robbers.

    Demands

Mr Adams, therefore, called for an immediate comprehensive report to explain the circumstances that led to the death of Nashiru, and to make known the identity of the police officer who “unprofessionally fired and killed the boy through a direct bullet to his chest as revealed by the autopsy report at the Tamale Teaching Hospital”.

The family of the deceased also demanded the immediate interdiction of both the police officer, who fired the shot that killed the boy and the Sandema District Police Commander, who deployed the police officer to the school compound.

The family equally called on human rights activists to prevail on the Ghana Police Service and the judiciary to arrest and prosecute the police officers who misconducted themselves in their line of duty since “no one is above the law”.

  • Eric Donkor still confident of AshGolds success in Morocco

AshantiGold defender, Eric Donkor, has chosen to remain upbeat about the chances of the team when they go to Morocco to face RS Berkane in the second leg of their first round qualifier of the CAF Confederation Cup.

On Sunday, the Miners got themselves a 3-2 victory in Obuasi; a result that may have described as quite dangerous due to the fact that Berkane got two away goals which could prove very vital in the grand scheme of things.

Donkor, though, is hopeful that the team will get a good result and head to the next stage of their journey to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Read:Eric Donkor excited to win first trophy with the club

“We know that the 3-2 scoreline is not one that most of our supporters will like but I believe that in football, anything is possible. We are capable of going there to win or get a draw to qualify.

The most important thing for us to stay focused in the coming days as we get ready for the second leg.

For us, I will say that the result is good and we need to work hard to qualify in Morocco.”

The second leg could have had a more manageable feel to it had AshGold succeeded to keep the Morocco from scoring and for Donkor, he admitted that the team lost their way early in the second half and that allowed the visitors to get their away goals.

“We lost our concentration in that spell after we conceded our first goal. We knew that we had to score and keep them out but we gave up a goal and we lost focus. We fell asleep and could not concentrate enough.”

AshGold will now get ready for the second leg which will be played on September 27 in Morocco.

  • General Motors auto workers strike in US

Workers began a strike against General Motors on Monday after America’s biggest carmaker failed to reach a deal over pay and conditions with the United Auto Workers union (UAW).

Almost 50,000 workers are due to take part in the strike, the first major stoppage at GM since 2007.

“We do not take this lightly. This is our last resort,” UAW vice-president Terry Dittes told reporters in Detroit.

The sides had set a Saturday night deadline to reach an agreement.

Read:Nearly all British Airways flights canceled as pilots go on strike

    In the 2007 strike, a two-day stoppage cost $300m (£240m).

The union’s previous four-year contract with GM expired this weekend, and the two sides had been holding negotiations on wide-ranging issues, including wages, healthcare, profit sharing and job security.

Also, the union has been fighting to stop GM from closing car assembly plants in Ohio and Michigan, which the company has said are necessary responses to changes in the market. Earlier on Sunday 850 maintenance workers at five GM facilities walked off the job on strike.

Read:Prisoners go on a hunger strike in Egypt

Mr Dittes said: “We are standing up for fair wages, we are standing up for affordable, quality health care. We are standing up for our share of the profits.”

GM argues that its wages and benefits are among the best in the industry. The carmaker said in a statement that its offer to the UAW during talks included more than $7bn in new investments, more jobs, and pay and benefits increases. “We have negotiated in good faith and with a sense of urgency,” GM said.

It remains unclear whether the two sides have plans for further negotiations.

The strike comes at a time when the US car industry is starting to see a slowdown in sales, and rising costs associated with investment in electric vehicles and curbing emissions.

  • Oil prices soar after attacks on Saudi facilities

Oil prices hit their highest in four months after two attacks on Saudi Arabian facilities on Saturday knocked out more than 5% of global supply.

At the start of trading, Brent crude jumped 19% to $71.95 a barrel, while the other major benchmark, West Texas Intermediate, rose 15% to $63.34.

Prices eased back slightly after US President Donald Trump authorised the release of US reserves.

It could take weeks before the Saudi facilities are fully back online.

The drone attacks on plants in the heartland of Saudi Arabia’s oil industry included hitting the world’s biggest petroleum-processing facility.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tehran was behind the attacks. Iran accused the US of “deceit.”

Read:Drones hit 2 Saudi Aramco oil facilities, cause fires

Later Mr Trump said in a tweet the US knew who the culprit was and was “locked and loaded” but waiting to hear from the Saudis about how they wanted to proceed.

In another tweet, he said there was “plenty of oil!”.

What will be the impact on oil supply?

The Saudis have not gone into any detail about the attacks, barring saying there were no casualties, but have given a few more indications about oil production.

Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said some of the fall in production would be made up by tapping huge storage facilities.

The kingdom is the world’s biggest oil exporter, shipping more than seven million barrels daily.

“Saudi authorities have claimed to control the fires, but this falls far short of extinguishing them,” said Abhishek Kumar, head of analytics at Interfax Energy in London. “The damage to facilities at Abqaiq and Khurais appears to be extensive, and it may be weeks before oil supplies are normalised.”

Read:U.S. briefly overtakes Saudi Arabia as top oil exporter IEA

Saudi Arabia is expected to tap into reserves so that exports can continue as normal this week.

However, Michael Tran, managing director of energy strategy at RBC Capital Markets in New York, said: “Even if the outage normalises quickly, the threat of sidelining nearly 6% of global oil production is no longer a hypothetical, a black swan or a fat tail. Welcome back, risk premium.”

What are the US accusations? Mr Pompeo said Tehran was behind the damaging attacks but gave no specific evidence to back up his accusations.

He has rejected claims by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels that they carried out the attacks.

Read:US blames Iran for attacks on Saudi oil facilties

Iran accused the US of “deceit” and its Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said that “blaming Iran won’t end the disaster” in Yemen.

Yemen has been at war since 2015, when President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi was forced to flee the capital Sanaa by the Houthis. Saudi Arabia backs President Hadi, and has led a coalition of regional countries against the rebels.

The US meanwhile has blamed Iran for other attacks on oil supplies in the region this year, amid continuing tension following Mr Trump’s decision to reinstate sanctions after abandoning the landmark international deal which limited Tehran’s nuclear activities.
