  • Publish names of customers you claim to have paid – Menzgold clients to NAM1

Some customers of Menzgold Ghana have described the claims by Nana Appiah Mensah, alias NAM1 that he has paid over GH¢9.6 million to customers whose monies were locked up in his firm as “false”.

They have subsequently challenged NAM1 to publish the names of the customers he claims to have paid.

Samuel Odartey threw the challenge to NAM1 at a press conference Monday morning on behalf of the customers.

He said the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) via a court order has frozen NAM1’s assets, “so where did NAM1 get the money to pay GH¢9.6 million and how was the payment done.”

NAM1, who is the Chief Executive Officer of defunct gold dealership firm, Menzgold, in a statement issued on Sunday, June 14, 2020, claimed that he has paid over GH¢9.6 million to customers whose monies were locked up in his firm.

He also assured customers who are yet to receive their monies that they would receive their monies before the end of December 2020.

NAM1 published the statement on Instagram as part of efforts to help dispel rumours that he had neglected customers affected by the shutdown of Menzgold to sign on a new artiste onto his Zylofon Music record label.

According to him, it would be wrong to say that Zylon and Menzgold were one and the same and that the only way he has been able to settle his indebtedness to affected customers was because of the other sources of revenue being generated by the former.

    Below is his full statement

A cardinal trait or element in business is the assets and liabilities phenomenon. All operational businesses have assets, premised on liabilities (All debits/obligations such as debts, faulty machinery, salaries etc. In fact, any obligation owed to another party (susceptibility) can be termed as a liability. Liabilities would forever be a part of all human endeavors.

Liabilities in the immediate instance aside serving as a driver (motivation) for business owners/managers to get corporate objectives achieved, are also employed to widely open income streams. It is when your liabilities exceed your assets as a Company that you have a problem, and as a State is when you’re termed a failed state. Thankfully, Ghana is working just fine and we as an entity within the republic would utilize our assets (the ones we can reverse or mobilize) to make it possible to overcome all our liabilities.

To say that, Menzgold and Zylofon are one and the same is a very low shot at logic and a glaringly incredible display of intellectual deficiency or bankruptcy. A child and his/her sibling may have the same biological parents, are obviously from the same family but are two different individuals in every respect. This is a firm factual point at law and in principle.

In any case, if one is indebted and does not get productive, how is he or she expected to generate income to service or pay off the debt? We as a formidable group need, we must and shall open up our income streams by resorting to the very little human and capital resources at our disposal, to wisely and tactfully, get productive as a group to pay off completely soon just so we can salvage an ailing proud member of our sect as quickly as possible.

As of now, we hold documentary evidence, clearly showing that we have paid over ninety six (96) billion old Ghana cedis (GHC9.6M) even in our state of dormancy and continue to humbly make payments every now and then. We’re capable, committed and shall continue to appreciate the paid up figure to a conservatively minimum amount of Six Hundred (600) billion old Ghana cedis (GHS60M) before the end of the calendar month of December, 2020 as we commence productivity now.

Many see the Menzgold customer body purportedly locking horns with the Company; I see a customer body in the light of a readily available huge market, representing an embodiment of personal and corporate brands unmatched confidence, a preservation of which is extremely necessary for our possible present and future endeavors. Consequently, our immediate very swift resolution of this still pending partial debt matter, is a need and a must in other to be able to happily shake hands again with these cherished customers.

We as a group cannot and would not wait for a perfect timing or favorable, perfect condition before we get productive as that would never happen. Perfection is the sole preserve of deities.

Sadly, we are just mortal human beings. Let us be minded also that unfortunately, Utopia too is a myth. For us at Zylofon, if there is a time to get to work, adjust and readjust to get productive whether or not we were productive yesterday lies in yesterday. I urge you all Zylofonians as we affectionately call ourselves, that the time is NOW. I would only entertain a conversation IF anybody can convince me based on thorough research work and data, that music business (contents creation and its monetization) is not a trade and that, producing music/content and monetizing it the right way does not yield income.

In as much as we share more in, regret deeply and sincerely apologize for the consequence of our shipwreck, which obviously has contributed to somewhat sour socio-economic plights for our patrons and mainly for us as a company, our period of lamentation is over, we are very much motivated, our hearts and spirits are poised to wrestle and to win. Admittedly, our journey seems very dark amidst earthquake and boisterous thunderstorms with persistent unnecessary and unjustifiable heckles. Refreshingly, we are human; fearfully and wonderfully made in the image and likeness of the almighty God, we’re bestowed with limitless potentials and can do ALL things through God who strengthens us. For this reason, we shall subdue this intimidating fowler and worrisome elements comprising the “forces of darkness”. WE SHALL OVERCOME.

May the Lord God almighty, Allah most merciful and most gracious bless us all and continue to be a LIGHT unto our path and a lamb unto our feet. #FollowTheLight.

  • NCCE gets more support for COVID-19 fight

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has received 50 vehicles from the office of the President to enable the commission to intensify its campaign against the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The 50 vehicles which have been given to the NCCE as a loan for three months were from the National Security through the facilitation of the Chief of Staff and the office of the President.

The Chairperson of the NCCE, Ms Josephine Nkrumah, who disclosed this to Graphic Online said the commission has also been given an amount of GH¢2.517 million to maintain the vehicles by way of fueling, operating cost, and engagement on the field.

”This has been one of the key achievements for us in terms of advocating for tools to work.

”Prior to the announcement that the government was going to supply the commission with 10,000 PPE, we had a meeting with the President and he expressed concern about lack of tools to work. So, the PPE came and we started following up on other items. I’m happy to see these 50 vehicles which would enable us go to the farthest parts of the country to educate the citizenry on COVID-19,” she remarked.

She said the vehicles which would be dispatched to the regions have been earmarked for the hotspots in the country.

Adding that the NCCE was going to adopt a strategy that would enable it work effectively and efficiently in the various hotspots and other parts of the country as it had been indicated by the Ministry of Health.

Ms Nkrumah said although the commission had already started educating Ghanaians to adhere to safety protocols, with the availability of these vehicles, the NCCE would intensify its campaign on stigmatisation which according to her, had been a major concern based on the feedbacks the NCCE had received on the field.

”Some people are now concealing symptoms which may be that of COVID-19 all because of stigmatisatoin,” she said.

Ms Nkrumah said the NCCE is grateful to all the numerous civil society groups which through their advocacy for tools for the commission had yielded good results.

  • EC shows plan ‘B’ in case new voters registration fails – Dr. Serebour Quaicoe

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has scheduled 30th June, 2020 to commence the New Voters Registration which has generated much controversies and debate over the past few months.

The challenges being faced by he commission have been compounded by the devastation of COVID-19 in the country and the world at large.

However, the Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe has hinted of a plan “B” from his outfit in case their resolve to compile a new voters register is halted by the  the Coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to Emefa Apawu, the host of “Beyond the Lockdown” on Joy News channel in the evening of Sunday June 14, 2020, Dr. Quaicoe hinted that “if we cannot do the mass registration, then the plan B will be to validate the current register and also go for new limited registration, and in each case still there will be human contact.”

This plan B has been the suggestion of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), some non-governmental organization, civil society organizations and policy think tanks, to conduct a limited registration due to the huge numbers of citizens whose life will be at risk if a mass new registration is conducted in this COVID-19 era.

    Mrs. Jean Mensa, EC Boss

However, according to the EC’s top executive, the plan B itself does not without a risk as the main election will still involve all the masses, by arguing that “the plan B will not remove the possibility of human contact. So these are the only way we can use the old register, but it will even come back to square one where we have to go to the polling station.

The election is expected to take place in December this year but with few months to the election, and the EC having to deal with two court cases already, amidst several red alerts and threats from ‘freedom fighters’ who feel their right to franchise is under threat, and a deadly pandemic to deal with, the EC must surely throw caution to the wind in carrying out this registration exercise.

  • TUC: Businesses need massive stimulus package – Dr. Kwabena Nyarko Otoo

Dr Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, the Director of Labour Research and Policy Institute, Trades Union Congress (TUC), has called on government to develop a comprehensive stimulus package for businesses and workers.

He said the package would enable businesses, small and large, to stay afloat and maintain their workforce in these difficult periods.

Dr Otoo said enterprises that accessed the package must sign an undertaking to keep their employees on the payroll for an agreed period.

“This is the only way we can sufficiently boost consumption, investment, and export to revamp the economy, restore growth to about seven per cent and fulfil the Ghana Beyond Aid Agenda.”

The Ghana Beyond Aid Agenda is built around three pillars; self-reliance, economic transformation, and attitudinal change and respect for traditional values and ethics.

Presenting a report of a preliminary assessment of the economic and social impact of COVID-19 on businesses and workers in Ghana by the TUC, Dr Otoo said with that approach, government would be directly supporting workers and their families through their employers.

Dr Otoo said the report was based on information gathered by trade unions operating in various sectors of the economy, including the informal sector.

“This approach is not different from wage subsidy schemes aimed at preventing mass redundancies implemented in other countries,” he said.

He said the interventions put in place for businesses by government were not sufficient to revamp the economy towards Ghana Beyond Aid.

He said without comprehensive stimulus package the economic and social costs of the pandemic would be immense and long-lasting.

The TUC expected the stimulus package to match the magnitude of the projected decline in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Dr Otoo said.

“GDP growth is expected to decline from 6.8 to 1.5 per cent in 2020. This translates into output loss of over GHc18 billion (US$3.1 billion).”

“Therefore, we expect government to inject at least US$3.1 billion or GHc18 billion into the economy between now and December, 2020”.

Dr Otoo said a decline in GDP was already manifesting in job losses and livelihoods in both the formal and informal sectors of the economy.

He said employers in the formal sector were not announcing mass layoffs but reports from unions, especially those in the private sector, suggest that unionized and non-unionized workers were losing jobs.

“Part-time employees and casual workers are the most vulnerable,” he said.

“Employers that had kept their workers are struggling to pay them, therefore, they are likely to terminate the appointment of many more workers if the pandemic persists.”

Dr Otoo said the TUC associated itself fully with the recommendations by the Ghana Employers Association that government should quickly develop and implement a comprehensive Economic Response Strategy.

“The TUC also recommends Workers Compensation Insurance Schemes in preparation for future pandemics as well as social grants for poor house-holds, equivalent to GHc140.00 per month.”

He said TUC expected government to relax the relevant laws to enable the Bank of Ghana to provide the necessary financial backing to the state.

He advised that Ghana must take advantage of the opportunities offered by the pandemic to review her trade policies to either ban or restrict the importation of certain commodities and support domestic private sector with funds from the proposed stimulus package to produce them locally.

“With these and other complementary policy initiatives, Ghana will recover quickly from the effects of the pandemic and return to the pre-Covid-19 growth,” he said.

  • GNCCI Leadership visits businesses to assess coronavirus impact

The leadership of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) has paid a working visit to some member businesses in Takoradi to ascertain the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their activities.

Members of the team included the Regional Chairman, Mr Stephan Miezah, and Mr Badu Aboagye, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber.

They visited the Ghana Rubber Estate Limited, the Ghana Flour Mills, Diamond Cement and Dress up College of Fashion.

At the Diamond Cement, Mr Dharmendra Patel, the General Manager, bemoaned the depreciation of the cedi, coupled with low turnover, as the major impact of the pandemic on the business.

The Managing Director of the Ghana Rubber Estate Ltd, on his part, appealed to the Government through the Chamber to find some relief packages for the more than 50,000 farmers in the rubber value chain who had been affected.

Mr Percy Botchwey, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Flour Mills, said the company, which normally produced 800 tonnes a day, now produced 400 tonnes daily and had adopted a shift system to avoid lay-offs.

  • Ghana Navy gets new 16-unit accommodation block

The Ghana Navy has commissioned a fully-furnished 16-unit accommodation block to serve as a transit residence for officers posted to Accra for operational and administrative duties.

The Block, KP Fiadoo Lodge, was named after Rear Admiral Peter Kofi Fiadoo, the immediate past Chief of Naval Staff, will minimise the struggle to find decent accommodation for officers in transit.

Each unit of the block, sited in the Naval Wardroom, near the Jubilee House, in Accra, comprise a bedroom, a hall and a kitchenette.

Commissioning the facility, Lieutenant General Obed Boamah Akwa, the Chief of Defense Staff, said it would also facilitate bonding among officers for shared experiences and leadership qualities.

Additionally, it would provide opportunities for young officers to imbibe the tradition of the Army and important values such as etiquette, integrity, teamwork, and morale.

“The role of the mess in developing and strengthening professionalism in the military cannot be overemphasized,” he explained.

Lt. Gen. OB Akwa said inadequate accommodation had posed a serious challenge to officers but the Military hierarchy was working in partnership with the government to address the problem.

He commended the Present and Past Commanders of the Navy, especially Rear Admiral George Mawuli Biekro, Rear Admiral KP Fiadoo, and Rear Admiral Seth Amoama, the Chief of Naval Staff, who he said, joined their efforts towards the successful completion of the edifice.

He said the decision to name the edifice after Rear Admiral KP Fiadoo was most appropriate and well deserved, especially for his invaluable contribution towards its construction.

The Chief of Defense Staff urged the Unit leadership to ensure the maintenance of the building with all its facilities for the use of future generations, saying, “I entreat the Mess Committee to put in the necessary measures to avoid the incidence of fire and other domestic accidents.”

For his part, Rear Admiral S. Amoama said the project was initiated in 2015 under the leadership of Rear Admiral Biekro.

However, it stalled for some years after old structures were demolished, the site was cleared and the site had been hoarded because of lack of funds.

In September 2018, it was reactivated with Internally Generated Funds and awarded to Edrick Construction Services.

The Mess, Rear Adm said, was the home of living-in personnel, the club of all members, and the centre of military social life in every unit, noting that with the anticipation of an increase in living-in members, social events would be reaching a crescendo.

Rear Adm Fiadoo said: “I am truly elated to witness the completion of this project, explaining that, it was not only because the project began during his tenure, but also of the joy of witnessing the solution to some of the perennial accommodation issues.

He said some officers, hitherto, resorted to renting guest houses or similar facilities while they were in transit.

Madam Patience Danso Abiam, the Chief Executive Officer of Edrick Construction Services, said all the three successive leaders involved in the project were passionate about it.

She said there was provision for all modern amenities, such as air-conditioners, washing machines, water heaters, and gas cookers, adding that the beautiful scenery had been created for the comfort and wellbeing of its occupants.

The party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama also warned the EC saying ”as leader of the NDC, I wish to serve notice that we shall do all our parts to ensure that our country remains peaceful and that the electoral process proceeds smoothly, but let nobody assume that we will accept the results of a flawed elections”.

Responding to the NDC on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, Sam Pyne sent a strong message to Ghanaians who don’t want to partake in the registration exercise emphasizing that ”if stupid people go and vote for a useless government, they will enact useless laws for you the wise person but should there be a good government to establish the right laws, you will equally benefit. So, from 30th June, everybody should go and write their names”.

  • Only rich people contract the coronavirus – Sege residents claim

Many residents of Sege, capital of the Ada West District in the Greater Accra Region, believe that COVID-19 affects only the rich, contrary to scientific facts.

While some of them said the coronavirus may exist somewhere in the world but not Ghana, others said even if it was in the country, the number of infected people were being exaggerated because few Ghanaians were rich enough to contract it.

The Ghana News Agency interacted with the community members to find out reasons behind their failure to comply with the COVID-19 protocols especially, the mandatory wearing of masks.

All those interviewed said, they experienced shortness of breath any time they wore the mask hence their resolve not to use it even though it was mandatory and that it did not matter anyway.

” I have about six masks but anytime I put one on, I start losing my breath,” a bread seller said.

Another trader also stated that “I sell nose masks myself but I don’t wear it because I can’t breathe with it. What is the point anyway. This disease is not for us. ”

The GNA observed that majority of those who patronized the business area of Sege did not obey the protocol of mask wearing.

They included commercial drivers, okada riders, traders, passers-by and local opinion leaders.

Veronica buckets were still positioned at the markets, lorry parks and other public places in the community but some did not have soap and tissue roll for effective hand washing.

Mr Vadis Ayiku Peaceman, Assembly member for SegeKoni electoral area, expressed disappointment at the refusal of the people to comply with the directives, reminding them that the “virus is not a hoax neither a sickness for the rich only.”

  • NDC@28: You can hold anniversary but can’t select running mate – Sam Pyne teases Mahama

NPP Ashanti Regional Secretary, Sam Pyne has chided former President John Dramani Mahama over his comment that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will reject a flawed election result by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Ex-President John Mahama, delivering a speech on Wednesday, June 10 to mark the NDC’s 28th anniversary, warned the Electoral Commission saying ”as leader of the NDC, I wish to serve notice that we shall do all our parts to ensure that our country remains peaceful and that the electoral process proceeds smoothly, but let nobody assume that we will accept the results of a flawed elections”.

Contributing to Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, Sam Pyne wondered why the former President would make such a comment when it is his party that is asking their members and supporters not to participate in the mass registration exercise scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

Sam Pyne opined that Mr. Mahama is only finding an excuse for the NDC members and supporters ahead of his overwhelming defeat to happen in the December elections.

”NDC has started to prepare the grounds to reject the results of the election…He’s (John Mahama) toying with the mindset of his party members and supporters.”

He further asked Mr. Mahama to concentrate on selecting his Running mate and not to question the integrity of the Electoral Commission.

”You haven’t even selected your Vice. When you say it, you attribute it to COVID-19. You can hold 28th anniversary but you can’t select your Vice Presidential candidate and you turn to blame somebody,” he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.

  • Police arrest 2 over bitten penis

Two Nigeriens have been arrested by the Neoplan Station police in Accra for allegedly biting off the penis of their compatriot in an appalling attack.

The victim, identified only as Taller, was rushed to the Kaneshie Polyclinic for medical attention and is currently receiving treatment.

The brawl, according to police sources, was as a result of a stolen mobile phone.

Sources said the suspects and the victim had been friends for some months now.

Recently, Taller had his mobile phone stolen at an area called Chisco near Neoplan Station, and he suspected Habib and Jibril for the theft and confronted them subsequently.

  • Rwanda, France launch digital project to curb coronavirus

Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) on Thursday, June 11, 2020, launched a project aimed at equipping community health workers with digital technology and data tools to facilitate response and prevention of Coronavirus.

This project, which is worth Rwf 223 million, is co-funded by the French Agency for Research on AIDS and viral hepatitis (ANRS) and by the French Embassy.

Two other French research institutes namely Institut Pasteur and INSERM will take part in the project implementation and evaluation.

RBC said the project will promote wider and faster detection of cases, help in contact tracing, support social reintegration of recoveries and ensure a link between the population and the health system in Rwanda.

The project is an outcome of a collaboration between the Medical Research Unit from RBC and the Nancy Center for Clinical Investigation based in France, according to the French Embassy.

The project will be piloted in four districts across the country: two in Kigali, as well as the districts of Gicumbi and Nyamasheke. It will see 400 community health workers equipped with a smartphone application that enables larger and quicker detection of cases, especially in rural areas.

Over three months, the mobile app is expected to strengthen the surveillance of pandemic and patient care. After assessment from the Health Ministry, the technology will be rolled out across the country.

Rwanda’s use of digital technology in the health system has been on the rise since the virus broke out. This project adds to the use of robots, drones, data modules among other new technologies currently used in the national strategy against Covid-19.

The project designers said it will rely on the network of the community-based health practitioners whose role in primary health care is remarkable. Also, with their Ebola experience, they are identified as health heroes who can play an undisputed role in the control and prevention of the pandemic.

Jeremie Blin, the Chargé d’Affaires of France to Rwanda said in a statement the project will strengthen cooperation between both countries, especially in the health field as the entire world grapples with unprecedented effects of the virus.

The Health sector, he added, is one of the bilateral priorities of the French Embassy in Rwanda, in regard with this year’s signing of a memorandum of understanding between the French Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) and the Rwandan Ministry of Health.

  • Buhari confident on Nigeria’s economy

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is optimistic on the country’s economy, the largest in Africa, despite the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Buhari says the pandemic has had a “moderate” effect in the country compared to other economies around the world.

Nigeria heavily relies on oil revenues and the economy has been struggling following the sharp fall in global oil prices.

Many Nigerians are complaining of massive job loses and extreme poverty.

Mr Buhari, in a televised address to mark Democracy Day, said the government is employing 700,000 people under a Special Public Works Programme to build roads and clean up the environment.

In April the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved $3.4bn emergency funding for Nigeria, the largest loan to an African country to assist in dealing with the pandemic.

But there are ongoing discussions to cut basic healthcare budget by almost half, as the country struggles with the pandemic.

President Buhari also said he was upset by the recent spike of gender-based violence, describing the incidents as “heinous crimes” and assured that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

  • Nigeria projects 39.4m job losses by end of year

A team charged with developing Nigeria’s economic recovery plan from the coronavirus pandemic says about 39.4 million people could be jobless by the end of 2020 if government fails to act.

The Committee on Economic Sustainability Plan, led by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, said restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus had mainly affected agriculture, manufacturing and tourism sectors.

It said the dip in the nation’s oil earnings would result in a $473m (£375m) shortfall every month.

The committee presented its economic plan to President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday.

Among its recommendations is the rolling out of mass programmes that create jobs and and utilise local materials in agriculture, housing and road construction.

Nigeria’s Lagos, Abuja and Ogun states were put on lockdown that ended in May to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The country has so far confirmed 14,554 cases of coronavirus.

  • Ahafo Ano North Municipal Assembly distribute over 6000 face masks

The Ahafo Ano North Municipal Assembly (AANMA) of the Ashanti region has distributed over 6000 face masks to cooperate institutions and the general public in the Municipality as part of efforts to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Led by the MCE Martina Appiah Nyantekyie, the team mostly made up of staff of the Assembly has reached out to every trader and staff of corporate bodies within the municipality.

Distributing the face masks, the team also took turns to remind the public about the reality of the pandemic and the need to follow all the safety protocols as prescribed by the Ghana Health Service.

During the exercise, it was observed that people were not adhering to the social distancing measures as it was business as usual especially for traders and some patrons of the Tepa market.

Also, the veronica buckets donated by the Assembly at some vantage points in the market were empty; but for some shops that have them at their entry points, one could have concluded that hand washing protocols were also not observed in the market. This situation forced the team to threaten the traders of a total lockdown of the market.

The next place the team visited was the Tepa main lorry station, here the team interacted with the leadership of the various transport unions and cautioned them of the need to remain safe under this pandemic. Here, face masks were distributed to everyone present as well as passengers at the station.

The team finally ended at the premises of the Assembly where donations of face masks, hand sanitizers, gun thermometers, veronica buckets, and waste bins were made to Departments, Agencies and other cooperate bodies in the Municipality.

In an interview with the Information Services Department (ISD), the MCE disclosed that the Assembly will continue with the exercise throughout the Municipality and it aims of distributing over 12000 face masks, hand sanitizers and some 200 veronica baskets and waste bins.

In a related development, the Municipality last week recorded its first case of COVID-19. The case according to the Municipal Health Directorate involved a pregnant woman who had visited the Municipality from Accra. It continues that, the woman got ill upon arrival and visited the Manfo CHPS compound, with a high temperature and other symptoms of COVID-19, the nurses informed the Health Directorate and arrangements were made for her referral to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi where her samples sent to KCCR confirmed positive. Her pregnancy was terminated by the hospital and is currently on admission responding to treatment where contact tracing is ongoing at the municipality.

  • Nungua residents accuse military of brutality

Some residents of Nungua have accused military personnel from the Southern Command of attacking them in an attempt to evict them from their homes.

The land in question, they said, is part of a parcel of land government took from the traditional authorities of Nungua for an Animal Husbandary project but was never used.

Frederick Okley Ashong, a resident and leader of the attacked residents said the Nungua traditional authorities, in an attempt to reclaim their land took the matter to court and an injunction had been placed on the land yet military personnel continue to defy the court order to attack them.

He has therefore called on President Akufo-Addo to look into the matter and ensure that lands taken over from the chief and people of Nungua and earmarked for projects which never materialized are returned to them.

He noted that their population as custodians of Nungua lands were fast increasing hence they needed a place to settle with their families but instead of government handing over their lands to them, the lands have been sold to some estate developers who use military to terrorize them.

“We also need what is left of the land for our children, we have no land anywhere to resettle and we are fed up with these military brutalities over our own lands,” he said

  • Ghana losing coronavirus fight – Akandoh expresses worry

The COVID-19 Rapid Response Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the ruling NPP Government to take steps to provide more funds and rapidly deploy more resources, to give Ghana a chance in fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to them, the only realistic window of opportunity available to Ghana to put in an effective mechanism to control the spread of the viral disease should be measured in days rather than weeks, as we race against time.

Speaking on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ programme, a member of the team, ranking member committee on Health and member of parliament for Juaboso constituency, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh expressed worry about the increasing numbers of the COVID-19 cases.

“It is about time the government should invest more resources in the COVID-19 fight because it looks like the country is losing the fight,” he said.

He said most treatment centres even lack basic PPEs to provide care for the infected patients, which endangers the lives of the health professionals.

He added that with the easing of restrictions by President Akufo-Addo the government should also be ready to equip and provide more resources to fight against the Coronavirus.

“The rate at which the numbers are rising puts the country at very high risk,” he added.

  • Technology University Bill passed

A bill aimed at providing a legal framework for the establishment of a public communication technology university in Ghana has been passed.

Members of Parliament (MPs) on Friday unanimously approved the Ghana Communication Technology University Bill, 2020 which will allow the Government to take over the Ghana Technology University College (GTUC).

The bill, when assented to, would re-position the GTUC as a viable centre for higher education in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the country. It has 44 clauses with four sections.

At the second reading stage of the bill, the Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye said the university should not simply be an addition to awarding public tertiary institutions but must provide practical training in ICT for the development of the country.

For him, this will help deal with nagging issues in the cyberspace and create more solutions to technological challenges of the country.

The bill was presented to the House and read the first time on Wednesday, 11th March 2020, during which the Speaker referred it to the Committee on Education for consideration and report, in accordance with Article 106 (4) and (5) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and Order 186 of the Standing Orders of the House.

    Background

The Ghana Technology University College is a technology-oriented institution of higher learning that is committed to providing an educational experience of the highest quality.

The University College was first established in 2005 with the name Ghana Telecom University College. It has its roots in the Ghana Telecom Flagship Training Centre which was the first of its kind in West Africa.

The Training Centre progressed rapidly through deregulation and privatisation to become the main source of teaching and certification in telecommunications engineering for Ghana Telecom employees, as well as other institutions in Ghana and West Africa.

The Ghana Telecom University College was granted accreditation by the National Accreditation Board on 30th March 2006 and officially inaugurated on 15th August, 2006.

In March 2012, the name of the University College was changed to Ghana Technology University College to reflect the transformation that had taken place and the introduction of new programmes in business and information technology.

Since then, it has provided long and short term education and training in information communication technology for diverse stakeholders both in Ghana and the West African sub- region.

    Observation

The Committee observed that GTUC, since its establishment in 2006, has been at the forefront of providing long and short term education and training in information and communication technology albeit without the requisite legal regulatory framework governing its operations.

The Committee chairman, William Agyapong Quaittoo said members noted that GTUC offers certificate, diploma and degree programmes under its three core faculties Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Computing and Information Systems, and Faculty of Information Technology (IT) and Faculty of Business.

According to him, GTUC also runs a Graduate School, which delivers postgraduate programmes in the areas of Engineering, Business Administration, Management and Information Communication Technology.

He disclosed that the GTUC had over 8,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, and has its main campus at Tesano in Accra, and other campuses in Kumasi and Takoradi as well as learning centres in Ho, Koforidua and Nungua in Accra.

  • Western Region records increase in fire outbreaks

The Western Regional Fire Service Command has from January 2020 to date recorded a total of 189 fire out breaks as against 182 cases last year.

Out of the figure five people lost their lives, while three sustained various degrees of injuries.

ACFO Gaddiel Napoleon Amoah Ebonyi, Regional Fire Service Commander, who announced this during a press briefing at Fijai, a suburb of Takoradi, called on the people of the Metropolis to be extra cautious in dealing with fire outbreaks.

He said it was unfortunate that people usually rushed to fire accidents scenes without any precautionary measures and urged them to desist from the practice.

The Regional Fire Commander said the Region also recorded six road traffic collision incidents, with one person sustaining injuries.

He said the Service would continue to create and sustain awareness of the public on fire prevention and safety precautions.

ACFO Ebonyi said the Service would continue to educate the public on basic fire fighting using fire extinguishers so as to reduce fire incidents to the barest minimum.

The Regional Commander explained that fire extinguishers are only useful in fighting fires at the initial stages of fire outbreaks.

“Once a fire is well developed, it requires professional hands to handle it,” he said.

The Regional Commander noted with concern that usually during their response to road traffic collision incidents as well as other hazardous goods incidents such as leakage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and fuel tankers/bulk road vehicle (BRV) spillage of fuel they face the challenge of teeming crowds who either rush to the scene to catch a glimpse of the incident, scoop spilled fuel or to help extinguish the fire.

He said though they appreciate the efforts of the public to assist on such occasions, he, however, advised them to stay away from such scenes and desist from the practice of siphoning and scooping fuel from tankers/bulk road vehicles involved in road accidents.

The Regional Fire Service Commander said in a recent incident near the Takoradi Container Terminal (TACOTEL) involving the collision between a fuel tanker/bulk road vehicle and a locomotive, there was a rather disheartening rush for the spilled fuel by the public who trooped to the scene to scoop some of the fuel without any regard for the recommended physical distancing required by the COVID-19- containment measures, some of whom were women who had babies strapped to their backs.

ACFO Ebonyi explained that liquid fuels/petroleum products by their nature are highly inflammable and quickly form explosive vapours which can easily ignite from the least amount of heat energy.

He said the recommended minimum safety distance for domestic fires and light commercial premises where the fire may be classified as medium was one hundred meters.

ACFO Ebonyi said for fires at heavy commercial and industrial premises or involving highly inflammable fuels, the recommended minimum safety distance is 500m.

He gave the assurance that the Service in collaboration with the Ghana Police would team up to strictly enforce adherence to the recommended safety distances for incident scenes and offenders would be arrested and prosecuted.

  • Prince Harry praises Ghanaian World War II veteran

UK’s Prince Harry has written a letter of encouragement and support to Private Joseph Hammond, a 95-year-old Ghanaian WW II veteran, who set himself a challenge of walking 3.2 km (two miles) every day for one week.

The objective was to raise about $600,000 (£500,000) to buy Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for health workers and and vulnerable veterans in Commonwealth countries.

Mr Hammond said he was inspired by Capt Sir Tom Moore, a British veteran, who raised more than $35m for the UK’s National Health Service.

Prince Harry said that Private Hammond and Capt Tom More – who celebrated his 100th birthday during his campaign – had set an example to the world.

Private Hammond, who met Prince Harry last year at the Field of Remembrance in London, said he was grateful for the letter.

  • Dompoase accident: Jailing driver one year woefully inadequate Ex MTTD Commander

Former Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) ACP Rtd. Victor Tandoh has stated that the punishment handed down the driver whose actions caused the lives of 34 persons at Dompoase on the Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway is woefully inadequate.

A Cape Coast Circuit Court has sentenced the driver to one year in prison.

The convict, Mark Mireku, 45, was found guilty on 34 counts of dangerous driving by the court on Monday, June 8, 2020.

He was also fined GH¢17,280 or in default serve an additional 12 years in prison on 18 counts of negligently causing harm.

The court has also banned him from operating as a commercial driver for life.

Commenting further on the matter, ACP Rtd. Tandoh stated that the convicted driver has been lucky for having to go to prison for just a year.

“The prison term is not punitive enough, making an overtaking in a curve is not ordinary inconsiderate driving or careless driving because the law says nobody should overtake a vehicle ahead of him in a curve. Doing so amounts to dangerous driving. I beg of my fellow Police officers if a driver commits a driving offence they should ensure that the punishment is punitive enough. This one-year prison sentence handed this driver is not enough. We will not get careless drivers to drive well if we hand down such low prison terms.”

  • New bridges to be constructed at Buipe, Yapei

Work is to start on two new bridges over the Black Volta at Buipe and the White Volta at Yapei, both in the Central Gonja District in the Savannah Region.

The two bridges will replace existing ones, while a third one is to be built at Daboya to serve as an alternative route from the north to the south.

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwesi Amoako Atta, who announced this at a press conference in Tamale yesterday, said the contractor for the two bridges had moved to site to commence work.

    Funding

The minister said funding had also been secured for the projects from a German development banking group, the KfW Group, estimated at about $68 million.

Mr Amoako Atta said the bridges would be constructed beside the existing ones to allow for the free flow of traffic, while work was going on along that stretch.

“These bridges are of economic and social importance not only to Ghana but also our landlocked neighbours,” he said.

He said the project had become necessary because the two existing ones that were constructed in the 1960s had outlived their lifespan.

In November 2017, the Buipe and the Yapei bridges were closed to vehicular traffic for maintenance.

The closure lasted for over a month and created inconvenience for commuters on that portion of the highway.

    Ongoing works

On ongoing road infrastructure works in the Northern Region, Mr Amoako Atta said 65 projects which were under construction were at various stages of completion.

    They included the 52-km Gushegu-Nalerigu road, the 57.8-km River Bank-Nakpali-Zabzugu road, the 10-km Kumbungu-Tolon road, the 73-km Salaga-Bimbilla road and the 45.3-km Salaga-Ekumdipe-Kpandai road.

He said 66km of roads in the Tamale metropolis and the Sagnarigu municipality had also been overlaid with bitumen, while 40km of roads within the metropolis would also be asphalted.

On the Tamale Interchange project, the minister said about 40 per cent of work had been completed.

  • Lets build consensus on 2020 electoral process — COMOG

The Coalition of Muslim Organisations, Ghana (COMOG) has called for dialogue among all political parties and the Electoral Commission (EC) for a consensus to ensure a credible process towards election 2020 and beyond.

That, it said, would ensure that the 2020 election would be peaceful, free and fair as well as be in the best interest of Ghanaians and the international community.

A statement issued in Accra and signed by the Chairman, of the COMOG Media, PR and Research Committee, Mr Mawuli Mustapha Braimah, said peaceful and successful elections would also make Ghana remain a beacon of democracy on the African continent.

    Impasse

It said COMOG considered it important to add its voice to the current impasse between the EC and other stakeholders.

“Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections are six months away but the political environment in the country is filled with tension with the main stakeholders divided on the process to compile a new biometric voter register,” it noted.

It said in past months, COMOG had witnessed heightened tension and actions by other non-political interest groups voicing their concerns on the stand-off among the EC, National Identification Authority (NIA), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Inter-Party Coalition Against New Voter’s Register (IPRAN).

The statement said COMOG had also taken cognisance of two former Presidents, Messrs J. J. Rawlings and J. A. Kuffour, legal experts, political scientists and civil social organisations adding their voices to the call for adequate dialogue.

“It is the fervent hope of COMOG to see the EC, the NDC and other stakeholders resolve their differences amicably,” it added.

  • Ahafo yields to first COVID-19 case

The Ahafo Region has recorded its first case of the coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, making it the last of the 16 regions in the country to have confirmed cases.

The patient is a 30-year-old man whose condition was traced to a female contact from a neighbouring community in the Ashanti Region.

    Confirmation

The Ahafo Regional Director of Health, Dr Boakye Boateng, confirmed the issue in a telephone interview, and explained that the victim was currently at an isolation centre in Goaso, the regional capital.

Dr Boateng explained that the cause of the infection was traced to a pregnant woman who was referred from Tepa in the Ahafo-Ano District in the Ashanti Region to the St Elizabeth Hospital at Hwidiem in the Asutifi South District in the Ahafo Region about two weeks ago.

He indicated that the expectant mother was diagnosed as having contracted COVID-19 after she had been referred to the St Elizabeth Hospital.

He said the 30-year-old man was one of the people who came into contact with the pregnant woman when she was referred to hospital at Hwidiem.

“Results from the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) released on Monday confirm that the Ahafo Region now has its first case of the disease,” Dr Boateng stressed.

He said so far contact tracers had identified 12 people who had come into contact with the victim.

The samples of those 12 persons, he said, had been sent for testing at KCCR and had since been advised to strictly observe the protocols until the results were released to know their fate.

    Calm

Dr Boateng called on people in the region not to panic but to remain calm and continue to observe all the COVID-19 safety protocols to limit their chances of infection.

He also appealed to them to refrain from stigmatising COVID-19 victims and their families, explaining that such a negative attitude would make it difficult for the government to successfully implement protocols it had put in place to contain the spread of the disease.

  • More health workers to be trained and deployed to isolation, treatment centers Dr. Nsiah-Asare

The Special Advisor on Health at the Presidency, Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare says more health workers will be trained and deployed to isolation centers in the coming days.

The latest update from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has seen 157 new infections recorded, bringing the total cumulative number of confirmed cases to 10,358 after almost three months since the first two cases were recorded in the country.

According to Dr Nsiah-Asare, government sees the need to train and deploy more physicians and nurses to attend to COVID-19 patients across the country particularly in the Intensive Care Units of the various isolation and treatment centers.

“We do not have enough critical care physicians; we do not have enough critical care nurses. These are the two main important personnel we need for ICU care,” he said.

He added, “We have medical officers who have been trained and residents who are also under training, who are all helping. Luckily, all the student nurses who are doing intensive care at Korle Bu have all been subscripted and are also working. For nurses, we can always train them on the job”.

Dr Nsiah-Asare also explained that COVID-19 cases in Ghana crossed the 10, 000 mark due to enhanced tracing and testing.

He disclosed that Ghana is doing well in terms of containing the virus although the new figure is alarming, a consideration of both the regional and daily increases in COVID-19 figures prove that the country is still doing well with the management of cases.

“The cumulative figures will go up because even if it is 10,000 today, if you test ten people, you will get 10,010, so when we continue testing, the figures will definitely go up, but the most important thing is to look at the daily increases in the figures, that to me is the most important and we also should look at the regional increase.”

“If you look at the regional increase, which region has added any case and which region has not added any case, some of the regions for some time now are not adding any case which gives us some comfort. But I will say comfort with my teeth in my mouth because you also have to be on the guard.”

  • New voters’ register: What has changed? – Kwamena Duncan quizzes Mahama

Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan has questioned why former President John Mahama changed his stand regarding the non-interference in the work of the Electoral Commission.

The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is quoted to have asked political parties to give the Electoral Commission (EC) the peace to do its work.

He asked those having issues to use the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) for redress.

In 2015, then President Mahama waded into the controversy surrounding the call for a new voters’ register, saying the Electoral Commission is at liberty to decide what is best for the country inched close to the 2016 election.

This was after pro-opposition pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance and the main opposition NPP vehemently called for a new register ahead of the elections, with the NPP petitioning UK parliamentarians over the matter.

“I have no right to interfere in that electoral list.”

“….We have an independent Electoral Commission and the Electoral Commissioners have security of office. I am not supposed to interfere in the work of the electoral commission. Ghana has an EC that is independent and does not consult the president to do anything.”

“What we have done in the past when you have a young register is to clean it up…so it is for the Electoral Commission to decide what it really needs to do,” the President noted at an event in France.

Then on 14th November 2016, at an NDC political rally, he indicated that; “being an election year, I will appeal to all political parties and other civil society organisations to give the Electoral Commission the peace of mind to do its work. Our Constitution says that the Electoral Commission shall not be subjected to the direction of or control of any person and that includes me.”

Contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwamena Duncan said the former President was right to say the EC had all the right to do its work “and so what has changed”?

“He was quite eloquent on this. He was right to say the EC should be allowed to do its work so what has changed….now what we are hearing is I will kill you and so on; who are you?” he charged.

  • We cannot learn ICT with stones NUGS calls on government to invest in IT education

President of the National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS), Isaac Jay Hyde has intimated that for students to make a meaningful contribution to the development of Information Technology in the country, government must make the right investments to set students up with the right skills and level of exposure.

His statement was in a reaction to a call by the President of the Association of Ghanaian Industries, Dr Yaw Adu Gyamfi on the youth of Ghana to contribute to the growth of industries through IT development.

Taking his turn as a speaker during the virtual forum organised by the office of the Senior Minister on the impact of COVID-19 and the Ghana Beyond Aid policy, the NUGS president said the leadership of the country should be ready to make the right investments in order for the country to have the full benefit of ICT.

According to him, it is sad enough that in some parts of the country, teachers have had to make use of chalkboard illustrations during what is supposed to be a hands-on practical ICT lesson.

“I will plead with the government that we cannot learn ICT with stones, because when we learn ICT with stones we well end up at the quarries. It is interesting to note that we have seen videos circulating of teachers in this county teaching ICT with chalkboard and drawing it on whiteboard markers. That cannot give the desired result we are all expecting. If you want us to change this country, we plead with you that be ready to invest in us,” he said.

While still stating the need for the country to make investments in youth development, Mr Hyde acknowledged the leadership of NUGS for raising funds to support one thousand students during the COVID-19 lockdown which left many struggling to fulfil their daily needs.

He also called for support for NUGS intentions to venture into farming by cultivating about two thousand acres of land at Atebubu and Accra.

  • Suaman DCE in trouble as Minister threatens to report him to Akufo-Addo over galamsey

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Suaman in the Western North Region, Christian Baah, is in trouble for allegedly superintending over illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey in the area.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, has threatened to report the DCE to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for overseeing galamsey in the area.

Asomah-Cheremeh alleged that the DCE was complicit in the resurgence of galamsey at Dadieso by allowing excavators that were seized from illegal miners and put under his care to be returned to the pits.

He made the threat when he led a team of military men to the site to clamp down on the activities of illegal miners who had invaded the area and were destroying land and water resources.

The illegal miners upon seeing the military escaped and left behind mobile phones, bags, and other belongings.

The minister became angry and said the resurgence of galamsey in Dadieso was because the DCE had failed to play his role and undermines the President’s directive on galamsey in the country.

He said “The last time we came here about two months ago, we found nine excavators and asked the DCE to take charge of them, but when we returned to convey the excavators away, their essential parts had been removed and we could not drive them away. I then tasked him to replace those parts.

“We later got information from National Security that the galamsey operators were back to work and so we came back unannounced, and lo and behold, the same machines are being used to destroy the environment.”

“It is the President who appointed all metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives (MMDCEs) and so they must not act in a way that will defeat the appointing authority’s vision. I am going to officially report the conduct of this DCE to the President at our meeting on June 17, so that action will be taken,” he added.
