Night of violence sweeps across France: Unrest continues to escalate

France is bracing for another night of violence after riots erupted in several cities following the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy by police in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris.

The boy, identified as Nahel M, was killed on Tuesday morning when he was stopped by two traffic officers in a Mercedes car. According to police, he tried to drive away and hit one of the officers, who then fired at him in self-defence. Nahel died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

His death sparked outrage and grief among his family, friends and community, who accused the police of racism and brutality. Nahel was of North African descent and had Algerian and Moroccan roots. He was an only child raised by his mother Mounia, who described him as her life and best friend. He was working as a takeaway delivery driver and played rugby league as part of an integration programme for teenagers struggling in school.

On Thursday, thousands of people joined a silent march in his honour in Nanterre, where he grew up. His mother led the procession, holding a banner that read “Justice for Nahel”.

From the bustling streets of Lille in the north to the vibrant city of Marseille in the south, the country witnessed another harrowing night of chaos and destruction. Public buildings, shops, and vehicles fell victim to a wave of attacks that left communities reeling.

In Roubaix, a city fraught with tension, reports emerged of a bed-and-breakfast hotel engulfed in flames, forcing terrified residents to flee onto the streets, seeking refuge from the inferno that consumed their temporary sanctuary.

However, it is the Paris region that once again bore the brunt of the turmoil. Disturbing scenes unfolded in Nanterre and surrounding suburbs as groups clashed fiercely with law enforcement, engulfing the streets in an unsettling air of confrontation and volatility. Startling reports from the scene indicate that some rioters resorted to using homemade grenades, amplifying the threat to public safety and highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Just hours before this eruption of violence, thousands had gathered for a peaceful march in Nanterre, commemorating the tragic loss of Nahel. The untimely demise of this young individual has resonated deeply within the hearts of many, serving as a catalyst for outrage and discontent towards the police, politicians, and the state itself.

France’s leaders are acutely aware of the potential consequences that Nahel’s death may have on the nation. Fear looms large as they grapple with the ominous prospect of a broader rebellion, one that could jeopardize the delicate balance between the people and those entrusted with their protection.

Despite concerted efforts to quell the unrest, deploying elite police units and bolstering officer numbers, the government’s grasp on the situation remains tenuous. The nation awaits a sense of stability and reassurance, yearning for a resolution that will restore peace to the streets and heal the wounds of a fractured society.

As the sun sets on yet another tumultuous day, the future of France hangs in the balance, uncertain and unsettled. It is a pivotal moment that will test the resolve and resilience of the nation, demanding decisive action and effective measures to regain control. Only time will tell if the authorities can rise to the challenge and bring an end to this troubling chapter in France’s history.

  • What Yvonne Nelson’s baby daddy thinks about her explosive memoir

What Yvonne Nelson’s baby daddy thinks about her explosive memoir

Actress Yvonne Nelson has been trending in Ghana and across Africa ever since she unveiled her memoir, “I am not Yvonne Nelson.”

This revealing book, which primarily focuses on her search for her biological father, delves into the intricacies of her life, from her upbringing in a home where she felt like an outsider to her journey as an actress and a mother.

As discussions about the book and its contents abound, opinions have been divided.

While some empathize with Yvonne‘s evident pain regarding her “daddy issues”, others are displeased with the mention of their favorite and highly respected rapper, Sarkodie, especially within the context in which it was done.

In the book, Yvonne revealed that Sarkodie got her pregnant in 2010 and abandoned her at an abortion clinic.

“I had gone for a pregnancy test to confirm what becomes the obvious conclusion for a sexually active young woman who missed her monthly flow. I was in the company of Karen. And when the test result was ready, I wasn’t strong enough to open it. She did and declared the verdict,” she wrote in Chapter 8 titled ‘Abortion’. On an ordinary day, I would have laughed out loud and that would trigger a string of jolly conversations and jokes. But this was no laughing matter. It was a grim piece of information that was capable of turning my world upside down. I wasn’t the only one responsible for the situation, so I called the man whose potent seed had germinated in me. His name is Michael Owusu Addo, a renowned Ghanaian musician who is better known as Sarkodie.”

Sarkodie, who was not happy with how Yvonne presented him, hit back with some strong words in his latest son “Try me”.

Several individuals in Yvonne’s circle, including actor Prince David Osei, have publicly defended her against all criticism, however, there is one notable person who holds a significant place in her life and has yet to utter a word about her book – travel and beauty photographer Jamie Roberts, the father of her child, Ryn Roberts.

Jamie, who maintains a relatively low profile on social media, has yet to address the topic of his baby mama’s memoir, at least publicly.

The absence of any mention or comment from him raises questions and piques curiosity.

His most recent post featuring Yvonne was on Mother’s Day, where he celebrated her by expressing gratitude for “raising our daughter to be the intelligent, strong, creative, and SUPER funny young lady she is.”

    Happy Mother’s Day @yvonnenelsongh

Myself and Ryn appreciate you, thank you for raising our daughter to be the intelligent, strong, creative and SUPER funny young lady she is.

Wish you all the best this day. X

So, what does this silence from Jamie Roberts mean? Does he need to say anything, or is his absence of comment a deliberate choice? Opinions may vary, and speculations are rampant. It remains to be seen if Jamie will eventually break his silence and share his perspective on Yvonne’s memoir.

In the meantime, fans and followers are left to wonder about Jamie’s thoughts and eagerly anticipate any future revelations.

  • “Childish Tantrums! Never let the kid in you destroy the king in you” – Actor Prince David Osei tells Sarkodie

“Childish Tantrums! Never let the kid in you destroy the king in you” – Actor Prince David Osei tells Sarkodie

The drama between actress Yvonne Nelson and rapper Micheal Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, is getting thicker by the day, and actor Prince David Osei has joined the fray with some words of wisdom for his friend’s ex.

Prince, who has been a close pal of Yvonne for years, has slammed Sarkodie for his latest song “Try Me,” which he released as an alleged clap back to Yvonne’s just released memoir.

As the song garnered both criticism and appreciation, Prince couldn’t help but voice his opinion.

According to him, the song is nothing more than “childish tantrums.”

Yvonne Nelson‘s recently released memoir includes a chapter that implicates Sarkodie as the man who impregnated her in 2010 and accompanied her to an abortion clinic.

Clearly dissatisfied with how the story was portrayed, Sarkodie responded with a song, released 11 days after the book’s launch, packed with strong words and denial.

    He rapped;

“First few hours heard the book is doing well. Who is really shocked Cos everybody can tell. So it’s not because your book is really good but we living in a world where negativity sells. I pray you get the healing that you need. M3n be claimi good girl, you are for the streets. Strategy na hot obaahemaa gye wo 2. Meaa ma gye one copy sharp I’m about to read,”.

He also denied that he pushed her for an abortion and said that he told her to keep the baby but she refused.

“Yes I wasn’t ready but then I told you to keep it. Wo kyer3 me s3 wo school na wo ko gotto complete it. To be very honest till today I don’t believe it .Cos me kaas3 Meaa me doctor Mb3 wh3 wo you said you don’t need it. After conversation naa then you sent me a text. S3 wadanfo bi wo doctor bi hut you know he’s the best. So don’t you make it seem like I was the one pushing you for abortion. Cos that b the only part wey make I vex.”

The song has divided social media users, with some praising him for his “bravery” and “telling his side of the story” and others blasting him for his choice of words.

Yvonne also responded to the song with a series of tweets reaffirming her version of events and expressing disappointment in Sarkodie for his approach.

Prince David Osei, in response to a publication on ace Blogger Ameyaw Debrah’s website, condemned what he called “childish tantrums.”

    He stated

“Never let the kid in you destroy the king in you … Whoever sleeps with a woman get her pregnant and don’t own up as man and goes about labeling her “Whore” is the dumbest asshole ever .. She was a “Whore” yet you shagged her unprotected got her pregnant!! God have mercy on those supporting tomfoolery!! #respectwomen”

    He further added that;

“It’s about respecting and valuing the women we have been intimate with in the past. It’s never okay to use derogatory terms or make someone feel embarrassed for something as natural as intimacy.”

According to him, real men treat women with kindness, empathy, and respect, regardless of the circumstances.

“Let’s all strive to create a world where every person is valued and treated with dignity. Take care! Good Morning.” he stated.

  • Tsatsu cites Akufo-Addo in Court of Appeal filings over ‘Quayson is jail bound’ comment

Tsatsu cites Akufo-Addo in Court of Appeal filings over ‘Quayson is jail bound’ comment

The legal team of James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament-elect for Assin North constituency, will today start an appeal process in the Court of Appeal, Criminal Division, to challenge the order for their client to face daily trial by an Accra High Court judge.

The move by lead counsel for Mr Quayson, Tsatsu Tsikata, is to ensure that the MP-elect gets a fair trial in the criminal case he is facing.

In an affidavit signed by Justin Pwara Teriwajah, Quayson’s lawyer, it is argued that the High Court judge, in her ruling allowing for daily trial proceedings, made “errors of law.”

The affidavit also highlights that the court’s ruling took a political turn when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made prejudicial comments following the ruling.

According to the affidavit, President Akufo-Addo emphasized a comment made by his Attorney General, suggesting that Gyakye Quayson acted irresponsibly by running for a parliamentary seat while facing criminal charges.

The relevant section of the affidavit states:

“That, apparently emboldened by the ruling of the court on 23rd June 2023, the extremely prejudicial, unjustified and insulting remarks of the Attorney-General were escalated to the level of the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“That, at a campaign rally for the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the said President made many prejudicial remarks, inclusing some to the effect that the voters in Assin North Constituency should not vote for a candidate who could end up in prison.”

The affidavit also includes a link to the GhanaWeb article containing the quoted comments and states that the accused will seek permission from the court to present a video clip of Akufo-Addo’s remarks at the campaign rally.

In addition to the appeal against the trial order, Quayson’s legal team has filed an application for a stay of proceedings until the appeal is resolved. The application is based on several alleged errors of law committed by the trial judge, which are claimed to have violated Quayson’s right to a fair trial.

Despite facing trial on five charges, the MP-elect participated in and won the by-election held on June 27, as announced by the Electoral Commission.

Quayson secured a total of 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of the total votes cast. His closest contender, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 12,630 votes, accounting for 42.15% of the votes.

Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party Ghana (LPG) secured 87 votes, which represented 0.29% of the overall tally.

The by-election in the Assin North constituency was conducted to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant following a legal battle questioning Quayson’s eligibility due to dual citizenship concerns.

VIDEO: A hearty exchange between General Mosquito and Kennedy Agyapong

Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, have set an example of graceful and respectful politics through a recent display of camaraderie.

These two influential and controversial figures, known for their opposing views, set aside their differences and demonstrated the power of unity.

They were captured in a video circulating on social media, eagerly approaching each other to exchange in an enthusiastic handshake and embrace, while onlookers cheered them on, clearly amazed by the rare occurrence.

Both individuals are currently in the Central Region to observe and support their respective parties during the Assin North by-election

The Assin North by-election holds significant political importance, driven by the legal complexities surrounding the constituency’s 2020 general election and the subsequent nullification of James Gyakye Quaysons parliamentary seat. The Supreme Court ruling cited Mr. Quayson’s dual citizenship of Ghana and Canada at the time of his election as a violation of the Constitution. As a result, this by-election serves as a crucial chapter in the ongoing political narrative.

The main contenders for the seat in this consequential by-election are Mr. James Gyakye Quayson, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Charles Opoku, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The outcome of this election will undoubtedly shape the future landscape of Assin North’s political representation.

The embrace between General Mosquito and Kennedy Agyapong transcends party lines and serves as a reminder that even in the face of political differences, harmony, and respect can prevail. It is a moment that highlights the potential for collaboration and dialogue, fostering a more inclusive and unified political landscape in Ghana.

  • The importance of lifestyle choices: Insights from a kidney disease survivor

The importance of lifestyle choices: Insights from a kidney disease survivor

Abigail Ashley, a survivor of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), has emphasized the need for Ghanaians to be mindful of their lifestyles and dietary habits in order to protect their kidneys.

Ashley emphasized the significance of taking care of one’s kidneys, which she referred to as the central room of the body. She advised individuals to prioritize drinking water, consuming more vegetables and fruits, and engaging in regular exercise.

Failing to do so can lead to the loss of kidney function, resulting in not only financial burdens but also physical, mental, and emotional stress. Ultimately, one’s overall health, which is of utmost importance, will be severely affected.

CKD is a condition characterized by kidney damage, leading to impaired blood filtration. As a result, excess fluid and waste accumulate in the body, potentially causing other health complications such as heart disease and stroke.

During an interview in Accra, Ashley highlighted that CKD can sometimes be asymptomatic, as was the case with her own experience. Therefore, she urged individuals to exercise caution and undergo regular check-ups to detect any potential issues early on.

Recalling her personal journey, Ashley shared that she had no suspicions about her condition until a particular morning in August 2007 when she felt an overwhelming weakness. Despite attempting to push through the day, her condition worsened, eventually leading to her being rushed to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. It was there that she received a diagnosis of end-stage CKD.

“One morning in August 2007, I woke up that fateful day, very weak, it was as if something was pushing me to the ground, but I controlled myself throughout the day, until the night when I couldn’t hold it up anymore and was rushed to the hospital,

That night I remember when the doctor said ‘prepare a bed for her, the Blood Pressure is extremely high.’ The next day, I was rushed in an ambulance to Korle Bu and that was where I was diagnosed of CKD end-stage,” she RECOUNTED.

Ashley admitted that she used to experience headaches but had dismissed them as insignificant, resorting to painkillers for relief.

In hindsight, she realized that her condition was likely caused by uncontrolled high blood pressure, which “I seriously had no idea about, apparently it runs in the family.”

Hypertension and diabetes, alongside infections and other factors, are recognized as the leading causes of kidney disease worldwide, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Seriously in my case I used to have this terrible headache, but I never suspected anything. Anytime I report to the clinic they kept giving me pain killers,” she stated.

Ashley courageously battled CKD for 13 years through medication and dietary adjustments before eventually receiving a kidney transplant. She acknowledged the financial strain of the journey and expressed gratitude to Despite Media, her family, and her church for their unwavering support.

As the host of “My Health My Life” and “Mo Ho Y3” on Accra-based UTV and Okay FM (both under the umbrella of Despite Media), Ashley took the opportunity to urge Ghanaians to undergo regular check-ups, pay attention to their dietary choices, and adopt healthier lifestyles.

She encouraged everyone to embrace a never-give-up spirit and fight until the very end. By prioritizing their kidney health and making conscious lifestyle decisions, individuals can safeguard their well-being and ensure a better quality of life.

  • How Assin North voted from 1996 to 2020

How Assin North voted from 1996 to 2020

As the highly anticipated by-election in Assin North Constituency draws near, an air of anticipation, excitement, and nervousness envelops the region, gripping both residents and political factions alike.

Scheduled for 27th June 2023, the Electoral Commission, under the stewardship of Madam Jean Mensa, has earnestly conveyed its dedication to orchestrating an electoral process that is seamlessly executed, impartial, transparent, and safeguarded against any potential irregularities.

This upcoming by-election holds significant political importance, as it stems from a momentous Supreme Court ruling in 2023. The court’s decision rendered Mr James Gyakye Quayson’s election as Member of Parliament for the constituency null and void.

The reason cited was that Mr Quayson held dual citizenship of Ghana and Canada at the time of his election, which violated Article 94 (2) (a) of the 1992 Constitution. The main contenders for the seat in this by-election are Mr. James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In the 2020 parliamentary election, Mr Quayson secured 17,498 votes, while Madam Abena Durowaa Mensah of the NPP received 14,193 votes. The NPP candidate lost by a margin of 3,305 votes. In the same election, President Akufo-Addo received 16,067 votes (50.81%), representing the NPP, while John Mahama of the NDC polled 15,014 (47.48%) votes in the constituency.

It is worth mentioning that this by-election comes just a month after another by-election was held in Kumawu in the Ashanti Region.

Amidst ongoing conversations and theories about the candidates and the potential outcome, The Independent Ghana aims to present a perspective that contributes positively to the discourse and helps voters in processing comprehensive information about their respective parties.

Examining the voting pattern of Assin North constituency, particularly between the two prominent political parties in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), reveals a unique trend. Unlike some constituencies where the voting outcome is relatively predictable, Assin North has proven to be more challenging to determine over the years.

Let us delve into the data from Peace FM’s election coalition portal and explore how the NPP and NDC have fared at the parliamentary level from 1996 to 2020.

    1996:

Both parties, established in 1992, were relatively young in the contest for votes, in a general election, against a backdrop of a tense sociopolitical environment. As the ruling party at the time, the NDC secured a significant 63.0% of the total votes cast, while the NPP received a modest 34.7%. Various factors may have influenced this outcome, suggesting a general affinity towards the NDC. However, the dynamics shifted swiftly in the next election cycle, making the 2000 elections intriguing to observe.

    2000:

Sentiments took a turn as the NPP emerged victorious with 56.6% of the votes, while the NDC managed a 39.7% vote share in the constituency. Interestingly, the NPP also won the national presidential elections that same year.

    2004:

The love for the NPP appeared to have grown in the constituency, as they secured another victory in 2004 with 58.6% of the votes, while the NDC received 36.5%.

    2008:

The 2008 election proved to be challenging for the NPP, as they narrowly retained the seat with 55.1% of the votes, against the formidable NDC, which garnered an impressive 42.9% vote share.

    2012:

Dissatisfaction with the NPP seemed to have taken root in the constituency, as the NDC ended the NPP’s winning streak by securing 51.6% of the votes, leaving the NPP with 44.2%.

    2016:

The NDC’s victory was short-lived, as the NPP made a strong comeback in 2016, winning by a significant margin of 56.8%, which was their second-best vote percentage since 1996. Remarkably, the NPP also won the national presidential elections in the same year. The NDC, on the other hand, received 39.2% of the votes, their lowest vote percentage in the constituency since 1996.

    2020:

Assin North became a topic of discussion across Ghana due to the legal issues surrounding the elected candidates. In the 2020 election, James Gyakye Quayson of the NDC and Abena Durowaa Mensah of the NPP contested the seat. Mr Quayson secured 55.2% of the votes, while Ms Mensah received 44.8%. Mr Quayson’s vote percentage marked the second-highest for the NDC in the constituency since 1996.

    Data from ghanaelections.peacefmonline.com

Considering the fluid voter behaviour within this constituency over the past decade, predicting the outcome solely based on historical vote percentages is challenging. Some constituents interviewed by the media have expressed apathy towards both parties, indicating that they will vote based on their conviction about the respective candidates and their plans for the constituency.

However, there are still staunch party loyalists who intend to vote for their party’s candidates regardless. It will be interesting to observe the behaviour of young voters, political sceptics, older voters, and the working class in this by-election.

The outcome of this by-election, just like most elections, remains uncertain. Only time will reveal the choice of the electorate and shape the future political landscape of the constituency.

Cowbell organizes another nutrition assessment programme with the 37 Military hospital to mark 2023 World Milk Day

On the occasion of this year’s World Milk Day celebration, the leading dairy brand, Cowbell, has reiterated the need for milk consumption to address the issue of paediatric malnutrition in the country.

This was announced at a nutrition assessment programme held on the 1st of June at the Ledzekuku Northern cluster of schools to commemorate this year’s World Milk Day. The programme, organised by Cowbell in partnership with the 37 Military Hospital, aimed to assess the nutritional status of children in the school.

A total of 240 students were assessed using the Mid-Upper Arm Circumference method of measurement, leading to twenty-five (25) school children being identified as suffering from different medical conditions, including malnourishment.

Mr Gideon Kodo (standing in the middle) addressing his team

Dieticians from the hospital and representatives from the Cowbell brand delivered a dietary talk to over 2,000 school children on the nutritive relevance of the Cowbell Milk product and the need for a balanced diet through a class-by-class approach.

Addressing the leadership of the school before the start of the programme, Corporate Communication and PR Lead, Mr Gideon Kodo, emphasised the importance of World Milk Day to the Cowbell brand.

“As a leading dairy brand in the country, we consider this day very important in our brand activities and engagements. Our wide range of Cowbell products continues to provide quality milk to meet the nutritional needs of the Ghanaian consumer, especially children. We believe it is important to highlight and educate the public on the nutritional benefits of milk consumption and, as such, our product Cowbell Milk. We also believe it is important to shed more light on the difference between non-dairy creamers and milk. Our product Cowbell is rich in protein and vitamins like Vitamin B9, which is good for the cognitive development of the child, provides energy, and boosts the immune system, to name a few,” said Mr Kodo.

Principal Dietician at the 37 Military Hospital, Alexander Stonliver Larbi, expressed his excitement about the partnership with the Cowbell brand over the past three years in a media interview.

“The intake of milk, especially at the early stages of a child’s life, is crucial for developing strong bones and teeth, which helps prevent osteoporosis and bone fractures later in life,” added Mr Larbi.

The assessment programme was followed by a donation of Cowbell and Yumvita products, as well as a visit to the Pediatric unit and ward of the 37 Military Hospital.

Acting Commander officer, Colonel Mensah, receiving the product on behalf of the hospital, commended both brands for their longstanding relationship and assured that the products will serve the purpose for which they were donated.

Since 2020, Cowbell, in partnership with the 37 Military Hospital, has organised a nutrition assessment programme every 1st of June to commemorate World Milk Day, a day set aside by the Food and Agriculture Organization under the United Nations to recognise the importance of milk as a global food.

PHOTOS: 23-year-old woman paralyzed and brain damaged in vicious assault by boyfriend’s rival

A horrifying incident in Lawaaikamp, South Africa, has left 23-year-old Sivenathi Toto paralyzed and brain damaged following a brutal attack by her boyfriend’s rival.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Shaun Madonono, viciously assaulted and left Toto for dead on August 26, 2022, according to Women for Change.

Toto’s cousin, Nosikhumbuzo Mhlaba, revealed that the motive behind the attack was revenge. “Her boyfriend went out and apparently had a fight with the suspect.

After the fight, the suspect allegedly returned to the boyfriend’s house to take revenge,” said Mhlaba.

Tragically, Toto’s boyfriend was not at home when Madonono arrived. Finding Toto sleeping in the outside room, Madonono forcefully broke down the door and dragged her to his own home, where he subjected her to a brutal assault.

Mhlaba explained, “He grabbed her and dragged her to his house two streets away, where he allegedly beat her until she was unconscious.”

After rendering Toto unconscious, Madonono callously loaded her into his pickup truck and abandoned her behind the Total garage on Nelson Mandela Boulevard.

Fortunately, she was discovered by a vigilant petrol attendant during the night.

A concerned neighbor took Toto home and filed a report at the police station, prompting her immediate transfer to the hospital for a medical examination.

Madonono was apprehended on the same day, but he was subsequently released on bail. Presently, he faces charges of assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm, kidnapping, and housebreaking.

In the aftermath of the attack, Toto has experienced various health complications. In December 2022, she suffered a stroke due to the trauma and injuries inflicted during the incident. Subsequently, in April 2023, medical examinations revealed blood clots on her brain.

As a result of the attack, Toto has lost some of her cognitive abilities and now requires assistance to walk. She has also lost control of her urinary tract movements, experiences saliva dripping from her mouth, and relies on assistance for feeding.

“She can’t talk and she has night terrors,” expressed her father, Simo Toto. “She only wants to sleep next to me. That is where she feels safe.”

Toto’s family is currently seeking justice for the traumatic ordeal she has endured. The incident has had a devastating and lasting impact on Toto’s life, and her loved ones are determined to hold the perpetrator accountable for his actions.

During the interview, the topic of Kwabena Kwabena’s rumored love interest, actress Ahuofe Patri, was brought up. The singer disclosed that he missed the funeral of Patri’s mother but attended the one-week observation.

When questioned if Ahuofe Patri could be his elusive “rib” (referring to his ideal match), he amusingly replied with a counter-question: “How can she be my rib?”

Describing his ideal woman, Kwabena Kwabena pointed to the well-known passage from Proverbs 31, which portrays the virtuous woman. He joyfully expressed that when he encounters someone who embodies the qualities described in the biblical poem, he will know that he has found the one.

Kwabena Kwabena’s previous marriage was to Abena Owusuaa in 2010, with news of their divorce becoming public in 2017. Prior to that, in 2009, he had tied the knot with a nurse named Esther. Reports suggest that Esther attributed their marital troubles to another woman named Abena, whom Kwabena Kwabena had met at a political rally in 2008.

As fans eagerly await Kwabena Kwabena’s next chapter, the artist continues to captivate audiences with his soul-stirring music and charismatic personality.

  • Ghana’s Energy sector faces challenges, proposes reforms under IMF programme

Ghana’s Energy sector faces challenges, proposes reforms under IMF programme

Ghana is currently grappling with significant challenges in its energy sector, prompting the government to propose a series of reforms as part of its International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

The IMF has identified several issues plaguing the sector, including below-cost-recovery tariffs, substantial distribution losses, and excess capacity, which have led to significant financial burdens for the central government.

These challenges have resulted in annual transfers equivalent to two percent of GDP since 2019, along with mounting payables to independent power producers (IPPs) and fuel suppliers.

To tackle these pressing concerns, Ghanaian authorities, with the support of the World Bank, have developed an energy sector reform programme aimed at revitalising the entire sector.

The programme encompasses various aspects, such as renegotiating Purchasing Power Agreements (PPAs) to mitigate take-or-pay liabilities, tariff adjustments, improving the operational performance of energy state-owned enterprises (SOEs), subsidy reforms, reducing distribution losses, and enhancing collections.

However, the implementation of these measures is expected to be a challenging and time-consuming process.

In an attempt to bridge the financial gap, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) recently raised electricity tariffs by nearly 30 percent, with cumulative increases reaching 57 percent since mid-2022.

Further quarterly tariff adjustments are planned for 2023 to account for exchange rate and price fluctuations and bring tariffs closer to cost-recovery levels. Nonetheless, it remains uncertain whether these adjustments will be sufficient to alleviate the sector’s financial strain.

Recognizing the need to protect vulnerable households from the impact of tariff adjustments, the government intends to redefine lifeline tariffs to better target low-volume users and the poorest households.

Additionally, a mapping exercise will be conducted to assess the effectiveness of the existing cash transfer program in supporting economically disadvantaged households with electricity access.

The goal is to calibrate the program more effectively, although concerns persist regarding its ability to adequately address the needs of the most vulnerable.

Despite the proposed reforms, there are lingering concerns about the transparency and sustainability of Ghana’s energy sector. Previous budgets have faced criticism for relying on overly optimistic revenue projections and unrealistic spending cuts.

While the 2023 budget aims to address these issues by adopting more realistic assumptions, doubts remain regarding the government’s ability to fully implement the reforms and ensure transparency within the sector.

The success of the reform programme hinges on effective execution and collaboration among various stakeholders. However, given the complex nature of the challenges faced by Ghana’s energy sector, achieving significant progress may prove to be an uphill battle.

Moreover, the projected reduction in the sector’s financial shortfall appears modest, raising doubts about the government’s ability to create sufficient fiscal space for priority spending.

While Ghana’s efforts to reform the energy sector are commendable, the road ahead is riddled with uncertainties.

The true test lies in the implementation and effectiveness of these measures, as well as the government’s commitment to transparency and long-term sustainability.

Only time will reveal whether these proposed reforms can genuinely address the deep-rooted issues and pave the way for a more stable and resilient energy sector in Ghana.

  • Here are the main infrastructure projects funded by China in Ghana

President Akufo-Addo has recently defended China overwhelming involvement and participation in Ghana’s economy, saying they have been “friends” and “strong partners” who have helped Ghana in difficult times.

He was speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha, where he also announced his intention to return to the international market to borrow for infrastructural projects.

There are several schools of thoughts about the president’s position on China -Ghana relations especially at a time when Ghana is high in debt and should be finding ways to sustain these debts and hopefully arrive at low level of debt or better still a solvent country.

However, for many that does not seem to be the case, as the President seems to keep playing into the hands of global monetary powers like China and the United States amongst others.

President Akufo-Addo’s remarks come amid concerns over a recent IMF report that has warned that Ghana could lose its mineral resources and electricity revenues to China if it defaults on repaying a $1.9 billion debt.

The debt is part of a $2 billion bauxite-for-infrastructure deal that Ghana signed with Chinese state-owned firm Sinohydro Corp in 2018. Under the deal, Sinohydro Corp would invest in Ghana’s infrastructure, such as roads, highways and power dams, and in return, Ghana would use the proceeds from the sale of bauxite, refined bauxite and aluminium to repay the loans.

In the past two decades, Ghana has been a significant recipient of Chinese loans, with approximately $5 billion borrowed for key infrastructure projects according to reports. Many Ghanaians are wondering how many projects China has funded in Ghana and the extent of Chinese influence on Ghana’s economy. To answer this, The Independent Ghana takes a look at about 20 major projects fully or partially funded by China that covers various sectors of the economy.

China has funded several major infrastructure projects in Ghana over the years. Some of the notable ones include:

    The Bui Dam

The Bui Dam is a hydroelectric power project that was financed by the Chinese government. It has significantly contributed to Ghana’s electricity generation capacity, providing a stable source of power for both domestic and industrial use. The funding for the project was provided by China Exim Bank according to the project’s website, “through a concessional loan of $270m, a commercial loan of $292m, and $60m in funding from the Government of Ghana. The two loans were offered by China Ex-Im Bank, with a grace period of five years and an amortisation period of 20 years”.

The construction of the dam started in 2007 and was completed in 2013. The dam has a height of 108m and a length of 492m. It has three turbines with a total installed capacity of 400MW. The reservoir created by the dam has a capacity of 12.57 billion cubic metres. The project also involved the construction of two saddle dams and a transmission system. The project faced some environmental and social challenges, such as the flooding of part of the Bui National Park and the resettlement of 1,216 people.

    The Kwame Nkrumah Interchange

The Kwame Nkrumah Interchange is located in the heart of Accra and was constructed to alleviate traffic congestion challenges that were becoming unbearable. It is one of the largest interchanges in West Africa and has significantly eased traffic congestion, improving transportation efficiency and connectivity in the capital city. The interchange was funded by China, and the China Development Bank provided a loan of $100 million. Construction started in 2013 and was completed in 2016.

    The Eastern Corridor Road

The Eastern Corridor Road is a vital transportation route that connects various regions in Ghana, and China has provided funding for the construction and rehabilitation of this road, enhancing connectivity and facilitating trade and economic activities along the corridor. The China Development Bank provided a loan of $649 million, and construction began in 2012 and is still ongoing.

    Atuabo Gas Processing Plant

The Atuabo Gas Processing Plant is a natural gas processing plant located in the Ellembele District of the Western Region in Ghana. It was developed as part of the Western Corridor Gas Infrastructure Development project, which aims to evacuate and process gas from offshore fields. The project includes the construction of an offshore raw natural gas pipeline, an onshore pipeline, processing plant, and an office complex.

The construction of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant began in 2011 and was financed by a $3 billion Master Facility Agreement from the China Development Bank. The loan amount for the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant was $850 million and was part of the Western Corridor Gas Infrastructure Development Project. The Aboadze Thermal Plant is a separate facility that uses the gas processed at the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant to generate electricity. The Atuabo Gas Processing Plant has a design capacity of 150 MMScfd and a normal operating capacity of 120 MMScfd.

    Tamale International Airport Expansion

The expansion project involved upgrading and expanding the airport’s capacity, improving facilities and accommodating larger aircraft. The project included runway extension, construction of a new terminal building, installation of modern navigation systems, and improvement of other airport infrastructure. The construction was undertaken by China Jiangsu International and financed through a $150m China Exim Bank loan. The airport expansion was funded by China Exim Bank, which provided a loan of $100 million.

    Ridge Hospital Expansion Project

The Ridge Hospital, located in Accra, underwent a significant expansion and redevelopment. The project aimed to enhance healthcare services and increase the hospital’s capacity to serve the growing population. It included the construction of new buildings, expansion of existing facilities, installation of modern medical equipment, and improvement of infrastructure to provide quality healthcare services to the community. Funding: China Exim Bank provided a loan of $162 million.

    Kasoa Interchange

The Kasoa Interchange project focused on the improvement of transportation infrastructure in the Kasoa area, a busy commercial hub near Accra. The project involved the construction of an interchange to ease traffic congestion, enhance road safety, and improve connectivity between different parts of the region. It aimed to facilitate smoother movement of vehicles, reduce travel time, and enhance economic activities in the area.Funding: China Exim Bank provided a loan of $82 million.

  • The mystery of Igbo Ora: How a Nigerian town became the ‘Twin capital of the world’

The mystery of Igbo Ora: How a Nigerian town became the ‘Twin capital of the world’

Imagine a town where almost every household has at least one set of twins. Where the sight of two identical faces is so common that no one bats an eye. Where the local greeting is “Iba oloye”, meaning “greetings to the twins”.

In the heart of southwestern Nigeria lies this town. A place where the birth of twins defies statistical norms and captivates the imagination of visitors and researchers alike.

Welcome to Igbo Ora, a serene community nestled in the Oyo State, known as the “Twin Capital of the World.” Here, an astonishingly high rate of twin births  has earned the town a reputation that stretches far beyond its borders.

Igbo Ora is located about 80 kilometres north of Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria. It has a population of about 278,514 people, according to a 2017 estimate based on the 2006 census The town is also home to the Oyo State College of Agriculture and a High Court of Justice. But what makes Igbo Ora stand out from other towns is its remarkable reputation as the “twin capital”.

A woman with her twin baby girls | Image Source: BattaBox (YouTube)

According to a study conducted by a British gynaecologist, Patrick Nylander, between 1972 and 1982, the average number of twins per 1000 live births in southwest Nigeria was 45 to 50, compared to the global average of roughly 13 twins per 1,000 births.

Igbo Ora’s unique status has attracted attention from scientists, anthropologists, and curious individuals eager to unravel the secrets behind this extraordinary occurrence. The town’s reputation has grown so significant that it has become a tourist attraction in its own right, drawing visitors from far and wide who yearn to witness the marvel of twin births first-hand.What lies behind this statistical anomaly, one may ask.

Various theories attempt to explain the remarkable prevalence of twins in Igbo Ora. Some, including the locals, attribute it to the diet of the local population, rich in yams, a crop believed to contain properties that stimulate ovulation and increase the chances of multiple births. Others point to the genetic predisposition of the Yoruba people, the dominant ethnic group in the region, suggesting that certain genes prevalent in this community contribute to the high twinning rate.

However, beyond these theories, Igbo Ora’s fascination with twins runs deep within its cultural fabric. Twins are considered a divine blessing, with locals celebrating their arrival through unique ceremonies and festivals.

Families often regard them as a sign of prosperity and good fortune. As a result, the town has become a nurturing environment for twins, where they are cherished and embraced by a community that takes immense pride in their presence.

The town’s inhabitants have even developed distinct names for twins, reflecting their reverence for this extraordinary phenomenon. The festival also aims to promote tourism and attract investment to the town.

However, scientific evidence for these claims is scarce and inconclusive. Some researchers suggest that genetics may play a role, as twinning tends to run in families and among certain ethnic groups. The Yoruba people, who make up the majority of Igbo Ora’s population, have a higher frequency of dizygotic or fraternal twins than other groups. These are twins who develop from two separate eggs fertilized by two different sperm cells.

Other factors that may influence twinning include maternal age, parity, fertility treatments and environmental conditions. However, none of these can fully explain why Igbo Ora has such an exceptional concentration of twins. More studies are needed to unravel the mystery of this town’s remarkable reproductive feat.

In recent years, the global spotlight has turned towards Igbo Ora, with media outlets and researchers seeking to shed light on the secrets of this twin capital. The BBC and other international news organizations have explored the town, capturing the essence of its vibrant culture and the awe-inspiring frequency of twin births.

However there are other towns in the world where twinning is frequent, including Cândido Godói, Brazil, Mohammadpur Umri, India, Abu Atwa Ismaila, Egypt and Podgora, Croatia.

Four (4) sets of twins in Cândido Godói, posing in a photo with an elderly woman. Image source: BBC News (Youtube) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YxjdfP4qBU

These towns, with their diverse cultural and genetic backgrounds, encompass a remarkable commonality: an elevated incidence of twins that surpasses the global average. It is intriguing to ponder how their unique heritage and intrinsic traits intertwine, potentially influencing this extraordinary phenomenon.

Nonetheless, the fascination with Igbo Ora’s twins extends beyond scientific curiosity and media coverage. Igbo Ora’s twins are a source of joy and pride for their families and community. They are also a testament to the diversity and richness of Nigeria’s culture and heritage.

  • Funny Face’s baby mama shares surprising details of their relationship

Funny Face’s baby mama shares surprising details of their relationship

Love can be a whirlwind, and Vanessa Nicole, the former flame of comedian Funny Face, admits that their relationship was a rollercoaster ride.

The couple, who share three beautiful children, went through a messy breakup that had everyone talking. They officially announced their separation in 2020.

Vanessa candidly reveals that they both made mistakes and are partly to blame for the rapid pace of their romance.

“We weren’t patient with each other. We didn’t take the time to truly understand and know each other better. We met in September, and by October, I was already pregnant. We are both at fault. Despite everything, I just hope for the best,” she shared during an interview with Kwaku Manu.

According to Vanessa, it has been over a year since Funny Face last saw their children. However, she clarifies that she is not keeping them away from him.

Vanessa assures that if he makes a request, she would gladly allow their children to spend time with their father.

“It’s been more than a year since Funny Face saw his kids. The last time was when we came to visit him in Accra. I am not selfish, and those who know me can attest to that. I would love to hear him say, ‘Bring the kids over during vacation.’ If he makes that request, I have no problem with it. We don’t have any animosity towards each other. This doesn’t mean I want us to reconcile. All I desire is for us to be co-parents. It’s not solely my decision, and it’s not the woman who chooses whether a man gets married. If Nana Yaw wants me…well, he didn’t like my piercings, so I took them all out,” she explained.

Vanessa, who took a break from acting to focus on her children, proudly announces her return to the business.

She also shares how the public still associates her with Funny Face, which doesn’t bother her at all.

“Even now, people still call me by Funny Face’s name. But I’m not bothered because, of course, we share children. It’s normal. I can’t say I’m completely immune to it, but I won’t let anyone take advantage of me. I will stand up for myself. I might be a fool for love, but I won’t let anyone cross the line,” she firmly stated.

As a mother of four daughters, Vanessa reveals that her pain pushed her to get multiple tattoos. With almost 20 tattoos adorning her body, each one carries a unique story.

“I have multiple tattoos and piercings because I simply love them… Do what makes you happy, not what pleases others… When my children grow up and express a desire for piercings or tattoos, I won’t fight it,” she concluded with a smile.

Vanessa’s journey is a testament to resilience and the unwavering love she has for her children, even as she navigates the complexities of co-parenting with Funny Face.

Ghanaian actor Idikoko shares chilling encounters as a ride-hailing driver

Ghanaian actor Augustine Abbey, famously known as Idikoko in the movie industry, unveils spine-tingling moments he experienced while working as an online commercial driver.

In an exclusive interview on the Stripped by Sika Osei show, Idikoko revealed the hair-raising incident that occurred when he set off for work at the ungodly hour of 3 am.

Picture this: It’s dark, and the passenger he was supposed to pick up seemed to have vanished into thin air. As he decided to leave the dimly lit area, the back door of his car unexpectedly swung open, sending chills down his spine.

To his surprise, standing before him was a bare-chested midget, sporting nothing but boxer shorts and a singlet around his neck. The pint-sized passenger wasted no time and questioned Idikoko about why the air conditioning was off.

Idikoko recalled the astonishing encounter, “I reached Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and then a request came in, so I headed towards Alajo to pick up the person. However, when I arrived, the passenger informed me that he was actually in Achimota, resulting in him canceling the ride. Just as I was about to leave due to the dimness of the area, the back door opened, and there was the midget—a short man with no shirt, only boxer shorts and a singlet around his neck.”

Idikoko continued, “He questioned me, ‘What’s wrong with you, driver? Why won’t you turn on the AC? I requested a ride, and here you are just parked without the AC.’”

Shocked and taken aback, Idikoko swiftly commanded the midget to exit his vehicle and sped away. The security guard who witnessed the eerie scene that night was left startled and fled in fear.

The bewildered actor couldn’t comprehend how the midget had managed to request a ride in the first place, leaving him in utter disbelief.

But that’s not all! Idikoko recounted yet another hair-raising encounter, this time involving a lady with an extraordinarily large tongue.

“After dropping off a passenger near Ashale-Botwe, I received another ride request, still in a remote area. I decided to wait for the mandatory 5 minutes to pass, planning to find a polite way to cancel the trip. However, within those 5 minutes, the door swung open, revealing a lady in a tracksuit with an abnormally large tongue. She sat in the car and instructed me to drive. I was petrified,” Idikoko recounted, his voice trembling.

These bone-chilling encounters have left Idikoko with lingering goosebumps, raising questions about the uncanny circumstances surrounding these peculiar passengers.

  • Why herbal treatments are not enough to cure malaria – Medical Officer explains

Why herbal treatments are not enough to cure malaria – Medical Officer explains

Dr. Dorothy Hanson, a Medical Officer at the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH) in Tema, has warned that herbal medicines are ineffective in killing malaria parasites and only provide temporary relief from the symptoms.

She said many patients who relied on herbal concoctions for malaria treatment often ended up in the hospital with severe complications because the parasites remained in their bloodstreams and could reactivate later.

“Some types of malaria parasites, especially the plasmodium species, can stay dormant in the liver for years without causing any signs of illness…and if they are not cleared with the right medication, they can come back and cause recurrent episodes of malaria months or years later,” she explained.

Dr. Hanson was speaking at a health communication platform organised by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Tema to educate the public on various health issues.

She said malaria was caused by the bite of an infected female anopheles mosquito, which injected the parasites into the human body. The parasites then travelled to the liver, where they matured and multiplied before infecting the red blood cells and causing symptoms such as fever, headache, and chills.

She advised people to always test for malaria before starting any treatment, as some other diseases could have similar symptoms. She also urged them to seek proper medical care for malaria and avoid self-medication with herbal remedies.

Francis Ameyibor, the Tema Regional Manager of GNA, said the health communication platform, themed: “Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility,” was a media advocacy initiative to provide a platform for health experts to share credible and timely information on public health matters.

He said health was a priority for everyone and called for collective efforts to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent diseases.

“Your health is your responsibility; be informed and aware of what affects your health, your work, and your environment,” he said.

  • Sociologist reveals why less-educated women are more vulnerable to intimate partner violence

A sociologist, Dr. Mark Kwaku Mensah Obeng, has shed light on why some women are more likely to experience Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) than others.

He was speaking on The Lowdown on GhanaWeb TV, on the topic of Understanding IPV.

According to Dr. Obeng, a survey has shown that women with less education are more prone to IPV.

He explained that this is because they tend to be more dependent on their partners, especially financially, and have less power and control in the relationship.

“What the study is actually showing is that there are certain people who are more prone to being abused and ultimately being the subject of these IPVs, being it the extreme or the intermediate ones.

“So, for example, women who are less educated. Sometimes, people want to use ‘empowered.’ What the study suggests is that such people are more likely to be victims of IPVs. The whole idea is that, for lack of empowerment, they tend to be more dependent, especially when it comes to economics; they are dependent on the man for daily bread,” he said.

Dr. Obeng also discussed other factors that can increase the risk of IPV, such as marital dissatisfaction, adherence to traditional gender roles, social norms supportive of violence, and exposure to war or political violence.

  • 8 kitchen habits that could leave a food safety inspector fuming!

8 kitchen habits that could leave a food safety inspector fuming!

You don’t want to get sick from your own cooking, do you? Here are some tips from food safety experts on how to avoid common mistakes that could ruin your meal.

You might think that your home kitchen is a safe and cozy place where you can whip up delicious dishes without worrying too much about hygiene. After all, you’re not serving hundreds of customers like a restaurant chef, right? Wrong. According to food safety experts, there are some habits that many people have in their home kitchens that could lead to food-borne illness or spoilage. And some of them might surprise you.

If you want to run your home kitchen like a pro and avoid any nasty surprises, you need to ditch these eight habits ASAP.

    1. Storing food in the fridge wherever it fits

Photo of a woman in brown long sleeve shirt looking in the refrigerator| Image by Kevin Malik via Pexels

You come home from the grocery store and unload your bags into the fridge, squeezing things in wherever there’s space. No big deal, right? Actually, it is. Ellen Shumaker, who has a Ph.D. in food science and directs outreach for North Carolina State University’s community food safety program, said that restaurants have to follow strict rules about where to store food in the fridge to prevent cross-contamination. That means keeping raw foods away from ready-to-eat foods, in case they leak or drip. So how should you organize your fridge like a pro? Shumaker said to store raw foods on the bottom shelf and ready-to-eat foods on the top shelf. She also said to use proper lids and containers and to clean your fridge regularly to get rid of any dirt or moisture that could contaminate your food.

    2. Putting new food at the front and old food at the back

Photo of a woman in sweater putting food in the refrigerator while looking at the camera| Image by Brian Haider via Pexels

When you stock up your pantry or fridge, do you put the new items at the front and push the old ones to the back? If so, you’re doing it wrong. Martin Bucknavage, a senior food safety extension associate at Pennsylvania State University’s Department of Food Science, said that restaurants use a method called “first in, first out.”

This means that they use the oldest product first, based on the shelf life. This way, they make sure everything gets used and nothing goes to waste or expires.

So next time you buy something new, put it behind the old one and use that one first. You’ll save money and avoid throwing away spoiled food.

    3. Tasting food with the same spoon you’re cooking with

Photo by Juan Pablo Serrano Arenas: Photo of a woman eating from a cooking pan

One of the joys of cooking is tasting your food as you go along and adjusting the seasoning. But if you’re using the same spoon or spatula to taste and cook with, you’re risking contaminating your food with bacteria from your mouth.

Shumaker said that people can carry pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause food poisoning. She said that tasting is allowed in restaurant kitchens, but only with single-use utensils or plates. She also said that you should never taste food over the pot or pan you’re cooking with, and that you should step away from other food when you taste it.

So if you want to taste your food safely, use a disposable spoon or a plate to take a sample and then throw it away or wash it before using it again.

    4. Thawing meat or fish on the counter

Photo by Evelin Rotaru: A close up photo of meat

You forgot to take out the meat or fish from the freezer for dinner tonight. No problem, just leave it on the counter for a few hours and it’ll be ready to cook, right?

Wrong again. Bucknavage said that thawing meat or fish on the counter is a big no-no because it can lead to temperature abuse of the food. That means that the food can get too warm and allow bacteria or spoilage organisms to grow. He said that restaurants do a controlled thaw, where they keep the food at a safe temperature throughout the process and check it with a thermometer. He said that a general rule is that foods should not be above 41 degrees Fahrenheit or below 135 degrees Fahrenheit for longer than four hours. Shumaker said that there are three safe ways to thaw food: in the refrigerator, in cold water or in the microwave. She also said that you should never refreeze food that has been thawed.

    5. Not checking the temperature of your food

Photo by Anna Tarazevich: A person holding a thermometer

Speaking of thermometers, do you use one when you cook meat or fish? If not, you should start now. Both food safety experts said that many people don’t use a food thermometer at home, but they should because it’s the only way to make sure your food is cooked enough to kill any harmful bacteria.

They said that you should follow the Department of Agriculture’s guide to internal temperatures for every kind of meat and check the thickest part of the food with a reliable digital instant-read thermometer. They also said that you should make sure your refrigerator is set at 40 degrees or below, as the USDA recommends.

    6. Stacking wet cutting boards after washing them

Photo by Arina Krasnikova: Wooden chopping boards leaning against a wall beside condiment dispensers

You wash your cutting boards and stack them on top of each other in a cabinet or on the counter. What’s the harm in that? Well, according to Bucknavage, that’s a bad idea because it can trap moisture and create mold. He said that restaurants store their cutting boards upright and never stack them.

“This is to ensure proper drainage. If stored on top of each other, moisture will be captured, which can result in mold growth,” he said.

So next time you wash your cutting boards, let them air-dry completely and store them vertically to avoid any moldy surprises.

    7. Drying utensils with a dish towel

You wash your utensils and dry them with a dish towel before putting them away. That’s fine, right?

Not really. Shumaker said that drying utensils with a dish towel could potentially recontaminate them if the towel is dirty. She said that utensils should be air-dried instead.

“Because dish towels can harbor bacteria and other microorganisms, they can transfer these to clean utensils,” she said. She also said that you should wash your dish towels frequently and replace them when they get worn out or stained.

    8. Letting your pet hang out with you while you cook

You love your furry friend and you want them to keep you company while you cook. That’s cute, right?

Maybe, but it’s not very hygienic. Shumaker and Bucknavage said that animals are not allowed in restaurant kitchens because they can contaminate food and surfaces with their hair, saliva and other secretions. They also said that some pets can carry germs that can cause foodborne illness in humans.

If you do let your pet in the kitchen, make sure to wash your hands after touching them and before handling food. And keep them away from any raw or cooked food that they might try to sneak a bite of.

By following these tips, you can make your home kitchen as safe as a restaurant’s and avoid any food-related mishaps. And don’t worry, you can still have fun cooking and eating – just do it with a little more care and caution.

Remember, a little change in habits can lead to a safer and more enjoyable cooking experience in your kitchen. So, let’s get cooking without compromising on safety, shall we?!

Hajia4Real faces a possible 95-year jail term in US

Mona Faiz Montrage, a popular Ghanaian socialite and influencer known as Hajia 4Real, could spend the rest of her life behind bars in the United States for her role in a multimillion-dollar romance scam that targeted lonely and elderly Americans.

According to a statement by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York on May 15, 2023, Hajia 4Real was part of a criminal network based in West Africa that used fake identities and online platforms to lure victims into believing they were in romantic relationships with them and then extorted money from them under various false pretenses.

Some of the excuses used by the scammers to get money from the victims included payments for transporting gold from overseas, payments for resolving a fabricated FBI investigation, and payments for assisting a fictitious US Army officer in Afghanistan.

Hajia 4Real allegedly received over $2 million from several victims of the scam and even pretended to marry one of them by sending a tribal marriage certificate after phone conversations using her real name.

She also opened a bank account in the name of 4Reall Designs, a purported clothing company, to launder the stolen money to other members of the conspiracy.

Hajia 4Real, who has 4.2 million followers (at the time of this report) on her Instagram page, was reportedly arrested in the United Kingdom on November 10, 2022, and extradited to the US on May 12, 2023.

She appeared in Manhattan federal court on Monday and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

She is charged with one count each of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, money laundering conspiracy, money laundering, receipt of stolen money, and conspiracy to receive stolen money.

Each of these counts carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, except for the last two counts which carry a maximum sentence of 10 years and five years respectively. This means that Hajia 4Real could face up to 95 years in prison if convicted.

However, the actual sentence will be determined by a judge and may vary from the statutory maximum. Hajia 4Real is expected to be released on home detention to her aunt’s residence in New Jersey on $500,000 bond with GPS monitoring via an ankle monitor.

Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement: “As alleged, Hajia 4Real was a member of a criminal conspiracy that specifically targeted older Americans through romance scams.

These scams can be both financially and emotionally devastating for vulnerable victims. Thanks to the efforts of our law enforcement partners, she was arrested abroad and has been brought to the United States to face justice.”

Hajia 4Real is known for her lavish lifestyle and flaunting her expensive cars and houses on social media.

Some reports claim that she may have acquired these assets through her romance scam.

  • US citizen John Shing-Wan Leung gets life sentence in China for spying amid tense ties

US citizen John Shing-Wan Leung gets life sentence in China for spying amid tense ties

China has given a 78-year-old US citizen a life sentence for spying, in a case that could worsen the already strained relations between Beijing and Washington.

John Shing-Wan Leung, who also has permanent residency in Hong Kong, was arrested in April 2021 by China’s counter-intelligence agency in Suzhou, a city in southeastern China. The details of his charges have not been made public.

He was tried and sentenced behind closed doors by a Suzhou court on Monday morning.

The court announced Leung’s full name in both Chinese and English, along with his HKID number, Home Return Permit number, and his US passport number.

He was arrested during a period when China had implemented strict border closures and domestic travel restrictions to combat the spread of COVID-19.

These investigations and trials are typically conducted behind closed doors, with limited information released to the public, often encompassing vague allegations of infiltration, espionage, and threats to national security.

Leung’s case comes at a time when the US and China are locked in disputes over trade, technology, human rights and territorial issues.

Tensions between Washington and Beijing have reached a historic low due to ongoing disputes over trade, technology, human rights, and China’s assertive stance on territorial claims, particularly concerning Taiwan and the South China Sea.

High-level government visits have been suspended, and US companies are delaying significant investments due to mixed signals from Beijing.

The sentencing coincides with US President Joe Biden’s visit to Hiroshima, Japan, for the Group of Seven (G7) summit, followed by a trip to Papua New Guinea.

The latter is a Pacific island nation where China has been striving to expand its economic, military, and diplomatic influence.

In response to China’s growing presence in the region, the US and its Asia-Pacific partners have increased their regional engagement, offering investments and financial support to counterbalance China’s influence.

A spokesperson for the US embassy in Beijing acknowledged reports of the conviction and sentencing of a US citizen in Suzhou.

The spokesperson emphasized the US Department of State’s commitment to the safety and security of its citizens abroad but refrained from providing further details due to privacy considerations.

When questioned about the case, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin declined to comment during a regular press briefing on Monday.

The resumption of high-level contacts between the US and China, following a pause triggered by the US shooting down a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon in February, seems to have provided a glimmer of hope. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi engaged in eight hours of talks in Vienna last week, with both sides characterizing the meeting as “candid, substantive, and constructive.”

On Friday, the US issued a statement condemning the reported sentencing of human rights activist Guo Feixiong, also known as Yang Maodong, to eight years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power.” However, China has not officially confirmed the sentencing, and the US State Department stated that its diplomats were barred from attending the trial in southern China. The US urged China to uphold its international commitments, grant its citizens due process, respect human rights and freedoms, including freedom of speech, and put an end to arbitrary detentions and exit bans.

The upcoming G7 summit, scheduled for May 19-21, is expected to address the group’s relationship with China, a topic of great significance.

In recent years, there have been several high-profile espionage cases, including the arrest of Chinese-born Australian writer Yang Jun in 2019. Last week, Australia called for the release of another detained national, journalist Cheng Lei, after spending 1,000 days in custody on charges of “supplying state secrets overseas.” In April, a prominent Chinese journalist was formally charged with spying more than a year after being detained while having lunch with a Japanese diplomat at a Beijing restaurant, as reported by a media rights group.

  • Al Jazeera’s exposé on gold and money laundering sparks criminal investigation in South Africa

Al Jazeera’s exposé on gold and money laundering sparks criminal investigation in South Africa

A documentary by Al Jazeera that revealed massive financial fraud involving gold and money laundering across several African countries has prompted the South African government to launch a criminal investigation.

The four-part documentary, called ‘Gold Mafia’, featured interviews with rogue businessmen who admitted to running a lucrative gold smuggling and money laundering operation that exploited the loopholes in the banking system.

South African president Cyril Ramaphosa said in Parliament that the government was taking the allegations very seriously and that it was determined to protect the integrity of its financial system for the benefit of the economy and the citizens.

He said that an inquiry had been registered to investigate the syndicate and the individuals who were allegedly involved in the criminal activities, as shown in the documentary.

He added that no arrests had been made yet and that he could not disclose more details as the financial action taskforce was working on the case.

The documentary also mentioned Ghana, where one of the self-confessed money launderers, Alistair Mathias, claimed to be friends with president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who had once been his lawyer.

However, Akufo-Addo denied knowing Mathias and his lawyer also refuted that he had ever represented Mathias or his company. Mathias later retracted his claim and said he did not know Akufo-Addo.

The Ghanaian government demanded an apology and a retraction from Al Jazeera for some parts of their reportage, but the Qatar-based channel refused to do so, saying that it had done its due diligence and presented both sides of the story.

Immigration officer saves two police officers from violent church attacker in Sefwi Wiawso

A heroic immigration officer prevented a potential massacre at an Anglican Church in Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region on Saturday, when he rescued two police officers who were overpowered by a violent man wielding a pestle and a knife.

The immigration officer, AICOII Nurudeen Abul-Ganiew Takra, was on his way home from work when he saw a crowd of terrified people near the church park, close to the Wiawso District Police Station.

He rushed to the scene and found an inspector and a corporal lying unconscious on the ground, with their AK 47 rifle dropped beside them.

The attacker, who had earlier stormed the church and assaulted some worshippers, was trying to grab the rifle and cause more harm, but Takra was faster and snatched the weapon before him.

The attacker then charged at Takra with a pestle, ignoring his warning shot. Takra had no choice but to shoot him in the right thigh to stop him.

According to ACI Augustus Acheampong, the Western Regional Immigration Service Commander, Takra acted with extreme caution and professionalism, as he was mindful of the safety of the crowd that had gathered around.

He said Takra handed over the rifle and the attacker’s belongings, which included a sharp knife and a locally made catapult, to the police for further investigation.

The two police officers and the attacker were taken to the Wiawso Municipal Hospital for treatment.

A formal report has reportedly been made to the police and the AK 47 rifle handed over to the Wiawso District Police for further action.

More details to follow as investigations advance.

Exposed: YouTuber’s devious plan to boost views – Crashing a plane for profit!

A YouTuber’s insatiable thirst for views has landed him in hot water, as he faces charges for lying about intentionally crashing a plane.

Trevor Jacob, known for sharing his adventures and life lessons with his 138,000 subscribers, has agreed to plead guilty to one count of destruction and concealment with the intent to obstruct a federal investigation, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

The stunt, which was part of a sponsorship deal for a company that sells wallets, was titled “I Crashed My Airplane,” and was uploaded to Jacob’s channel on Christmas Eve 2021.

The 13-minute video shows him flying a small aircraft equipped with multiple cameras, which appears to suffer a mechanical failure over California’s Los Padres National Forest.

Jacob jumps out and deploys a parachute, while the plane crashes, unmanned.

However, it turns out that the crash was not an accident, but a deliberate act planned to generate views and revenue.

Jacob had packed a parachute and a selfie stick, and had allegedly planned all along to film himself jumping from the plane and get footage of the crash.

He then went to great lengths to cover up the truth, lying to investigators and even destroying the wreckage.

The consequences for Jacob are severe, as he faces a maximum sentence of about 20 years in prison for his crime.

In addition, his pilot license has been revoked, putting an end to his aerial adventures.

Joyce Bawah Mogtari denies making tribal comments against Ashantis

A former Deputy Minister of Transport and special aide to ex-President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has dismissed a fake social media post that attributed tribal remarks against the Ashanti people to her.

She said the post was shared from a clone account and had nothing to do with her. She also accused the current Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government of being behind the creation of such accounts to tarnish the image of political opponents and sow discord among Ghanaians.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, May 9, 2023, Mogtari wrote that,

“As soon as they announced a government initiative to curb the spread of fake news, I knew that this infamous government had discovered a new scam! Clone the accounts of political opponents and set them up for attacks or create disaffection.”

  • Ghana in search of the true leader/president

Ghana in search of the true leader/president

Dear Honorable Ghanaians, as a citizen, I want to take this opportunity to share my views with you. I should be very excited over your critiques and criticisms. And I would also be pleased to accept your opinions as well.

On 7th January 2025, Ghana shall be inaugurating a new president as the leader of our nation. And as a concerned Ghanaian, I would like to share my vision of the type of leader our motherland should hire to lead our great nation.

Ghana is now 66 years old. Unfortunately, we have very little to show for this old age even though our Almighty Father and Allah has blessed us with almost every type of mineral resources and great intellect.

Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, our first president, made tremendous strides. These included the establishment of the Akosombo dam, the Tema harbor, free education for the northern part of the country, mass education, free health care, and above all, a great step towards “The Ghana Young Pioneers, and the African Personality”.

The Young Pioneers and African Personality movements were basically aimed at making us know ourselves and to use this spirit to be able to galvanize ourselves as a people and as a nation. And with this identification of ourselves, we would have translated our knowledge, strength and resources into wealth.

Through Nkrumah’s vision, we realized that he was the true leader because he provided direction and guidance by inspiring people to stand for a cause. He was compassionate, competent, transformational and courageous.

Dr. Nkrumah was an exceptional leader because he served the best interests of the people and he possessed goals greater than achieving his personal glory.

I do believe that Ghana has had certain leaders that have alsodemonstrated various leadership qualities, such as selflessness, honesty, vision, integrity, compassion, and incorruptibility. These persons include Dr. James E. K. Aggrey, Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia, Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, Mr. Simon Diedong Dombo, TettehQuarshie, Yaa Asantewaa (the Queenmother of Ejisu) and many others. These individuals were selfless and, more significantly, NOT CORRUPT!

Dr. Aggrey is recognized for educating and inspiring the black population and Africans through his words “ Nothing but the best is good enough for Africa”.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is recognized for his belief of a new Africa, independent and absolutely free from imperialism that was founded upon the conception of one and united Africa, drawing its strength from modern science and technology and from the traditional African values of egalitarianism.

Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia is recognized for educating the people of Ghana on the paradigm of democracy, and on Civic Responsibility.

Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah on the other hand, was a scholar, lawyer, statesman and a politician who is also credited with giving Ghana its current name.

Mr. S. D. Dombo was a chief, Douri-Na, and a teacher. He was reputed to be the first educated chieftain in the Upper West Region of Ghana. He formed and led the Northern People’s Party (NPP) in the Gold Coast which was aimed at protecting the interest of those in the Northern region of Ghana.

Tetteh Quarshie was a pre-independent Ghanaian agriculturist and the person directly responsible for the introduction of cocoa crops to Ghana, which today constitute the major export crops of the Ghanaian economy.

Yaa Asantewaa was the Queenmother of Ejisu and a mother. She was an intellectual, a politician, a human rights activist, a queen and a war leader. She became famous for commanding the Ashanti Kings in the War of the Golden Stool, against British colonial rule, to defend and protect the sovereign independence of the Golden Stool.

All these mentioned individuals in our history, depict leaders thatwere willing to accept responsibility and the ability to inspire their people. They exhibited honesty, love for their heritage, intellect, and above all, they were all transformational leaders.

It took a competent, visionary, mature, selfless, and incorruptible man, in the person of Deng Xiaoping, to transform China into a far-reaching market-economic reformed nation. And if one wants to achieve excellence, then it is advisable to emulate the examples of those who have already done so.

I have cited these personalities to demonstrate true Leadership because they never tried to control their people.

Instead, they inspired their people, encouraged them to understand matters at home, and used education to guide them towards  success.

These personalities were true leaders because they were not afraid to make demands of the people they led. These leaders  were true ones because they established flagship programs  towards developments in the infrastructure, education, health,  security, and the general economy of our great nation.

My most beloved Ghanaians, I propose that we look closely at those candidates vying for the presidency of Ghana to determine  their integrity and how they can hold themselves  accountable. Let us look out for the candidate who demonstrates  honesty, has a vision, competency and among many other.

Let us refrain from looking for the candidate because of his tribe,  religious affiliation and corruptive antics. Let us look for The President of Ghana that we can All be proud of.

Dear Ghanaians, kindly bear with me that the factors for The True Leader in Ghana from 7th January 2025 should be based on honesty, vision, incorruptibility, inspirational, and transformational.

This is my first epistle to you. I shall come back to you with my

    second episode.

God bless our Homeland Ghana and make us great and strong!

  • “My children are missing their dad very badly, it is not easy” – Christian Atsu’s wife laments

“My children are missing their dad very badly, it is not easy” – Christian Atsu’s wife laments

Wife of the late Christian Atsu Twasam, Marie-Claire Rupio, is still coming to terms with the loss of her husband in the recent Turkey-Syria earthquake disaster.

According to a recent post on social media, dealing with the loss of her husband and father of her children, has been difficult for and her children, who miss their father terribly.

Despite the pain, Marie-Claire has been using her Instagram account to share fond memories of her husband with family and friends.

Recently, she posted a heartwarming video of Christian standing on a hovering board with one of their children, riding around what looked like their living room. She also shared a greyscale picture of him and another photo of their children.

However, the grieving wife was taken aback when she received an unpleasant message from someone under her post.

In response, Marie-Claire posted a message on her Instagram story, asking people to refrain from leaving negative comments.

She seems to occasionally share cherished moments she had with her husband and their children while he was alive.

Marie-Claire went on to remind her followers that she has three children who are still grieving and missing their father, and thus it’s not an easy time for anyone.

“If you have nothing nice to say under a reel that I have made for me, my children, Christian’s family and friends. Please do not comment! You do not need to follow me or anything if you do not like my photos or videos. I have 3 children who are missing their dad very badly so please it is not easy for anybody. Thank you,” she wrote.

    Marie-Claire’s post on Instagram

It’s not clear what the comment was that provoked Marie-Claire’s response, but it’s evident that she’s still in a very fragile state, and it’s vital to be sensitive and respectful of her grieving process.

Before her husband’s death, Marie-Claire was always a private person, and she has maintained the same composure even in her time of pain.

Her posts on social media are mostly about her late husband or her children, a testament to the love and devotion she had for her family.

We can only hope that Marie-Claire finds the strength to carry on, knowing that she has the love and support of her family, friends, and followers.

Losing a loved one is never easy, but we pray that she finds comfort in the beautiful memories she shared with her husband and the legacy he left behind.

This comes barely two months after the tragic earthquake in Turkey claimed the lives of many, including Christian Atsu Twasam, a professional footballer who played for several top clubs, including Newcastle United and FC Porto.

The news of his death sent shockwaves through the footballing world, with many of his former teammates, coaches, and fans paying tribute to the talented player and loving family man.

On February 6, 2023, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.8 hit southern Turkey and northern Syria, killing more than 40,000 people and destroying thousands of buildings.

Atsu was living in a luxury 12-story apartment in Antakya, Hatay province, where he had joined Turkish club Hatayspor in September 2020.

He had scored a winning goal for his team just hours before the quake.

  • Salinko loved his wife too much – Oboy Siki explains reason for colleague’s divorce

Salinko loved his wife too much – Oboy Siki explains reason for colleague’s divorce

Kumawood actor Oboy Siki has shared his opinion on why his colleague Salinko’s marriage ended in divorce.

He said Salinko was too lenient and generous with his wife, Nancy Owusu, and exposed her to things that made her lose respect for him.

Salinko, whose real name is Abraham Davis, confirmed his divorce in an interview with Poleeno Multimedia. He said his wife left him without any clear reason, saying she was fed up.

He said he tried to reconcile with her through her father, but he also supported her decision. He denied any allegations of abuse or cheating in their marriage.

“Madam just said that she is fed up, we went to the father and the father also said he can see the daughter is fed up; no one maltreated her or did anything to her,” he earlier mentioned.

Salinko said the divorce affected him mentally and emotionally, and he almost went mad. He said he had to listen to motivational messages and pray to overcome the challenge.

“I nearly went mad but I had to manage because initially when I go to the market to sell, I can sit there for a while until someone prompts me before I become conscious of myself. Yes, a lady can tell you that she is fed up without any reason,” he added.

However, Oboy Siki, addressing the issue in an interview on GHPage, said Salinko was partly responsible for his divorce.

According to him, his fellow Kumawood actor, Salinko took his wife to every event he attended, and this made her meet people who were richer and more influential.

“When you take her to places like that, she gets to meet people who are bigger than you. People who have attained a higher status than you so she starts to disrespect you. The big men even send you on errands, right in her presence. You expose her to a lot of things,” he stated.

He said Salinko also gave his wife too much freedom and privileges, which made her take him for granted.

Oboy Siki advised Salinko to learn from his mistake and be more careful with his future relationships.

“Salinko will learn some sense from this. When he got married, he takes his wife to almost every event he is invited to. It’s not the right thing to do, marriage isn’t like that. Whenever we go for events, you always grab two seats for yourself, everything that is being served including food, drinks and so on, you take double. Why? When you do that, you are spoiling the woman too much. She sees all these things,” he quoted to have said.

Salinko and Nancy got married on September 7, 2017, in a private ceremony. They were together for six years before their divorce.

Ablakwa apologizes for kicking court papers served by bailiff

North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has apologized for kicking court papers served on him by a bailiff in February this year.

The MP was sued for contempt of court by Victor Kusi Boateng, secretary to the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral, who had earlier filed a restraining order against him for making public disclosures of his private information.

The contempt case, which sought to jail Ablakwa for disrespecting the courts and the judicial system, was dismissed last week with the judge awarding cost of 10,000 cedis to Ablakwa.

Ablakwa has explained why he kicked the court papers as served on him at the premises of Metro TV in Accra, which footage went viral on social media.

Speaking on Good Evening Ghana programme (May 5, 2023) he was asked by co-panelist Nana Akomea why he did what he did in February this year

Ablakwa explained: “I was extremely provoked; I was asking the gentleman who are you and he wouldn’t tell me. He just says ‘I have documents for you,’ I say ‘which documents?’ Just let me know, then he threw it at me.

“So, I lost my cool… honestly that is not me. It was an unfortunate incident …but I felt so disrespected. I was driving myself and I thought I could just kick it out of my way and go away,” he added.

He also said that in court, the plaintiff failed to provide proof of service when the judge demanded it because the supposed bailiff was not known to the court, a fact his lawyers established when they went through the court registry.

He apologized for his action and said he had learned his lesson from the incident. He also thanked his lawyers and supporters for standing by him throughout the case.

He expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the case and said he was vindicated by the court’s ruling. He said he would continue to fight for accountability and transparency in public affairs.

The police have reportedly made fresh arrests in the 2019 murder case of Josephine Asante Tandoh, a former manager of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), who was stabbed and strangled to death at her home near Afienya in the Greater Accra Region.

According to reports by the Daily Guide and The Chronicle newspapers, the police have recently nabbed two more suspects linked to the murder.

They are Richard Kwabena Kwakye, alias Kwabena Boateng, 37-year-old former GPHA driver, and Dominic Owusu, a 51-year-old taxi driver.

They were arrested after fleeing to Burkina Faso following the incident on January 13, 2019.

The reports also said the suspects allegedly have a connection with a top hierarchy of GPHA as the prime suspect allegedly mentioned. The motive behind the murder is still under investigation.

According to the police, the suspects ambushed the victim around her residence at block E of EMEF Estate on the Afienya road, where she lived with her husband and their 12-year-old son.

The victim had attended a get-together party organised by GPHA at the senior staff club house at Tema Community Six and was returning home, when the suspects followed her vehicle into the compound and entered her apartment before stabbing and strangling her to death.

  • Ghana overtakes Ivory Coast in domestic cocoa production, says ICCO

The International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) has released its Cocoa Market Report for March 2023, which shows that Ghana has produced more cocoa than Ivory Coast for the first half of the 2022/23 crop season.

According to the report, Ghana’s purchases of graded and sealed cocoa beans reached 566,846 tonnes by 9 March 2023, an 18 percent increase from the same period of the previous season. In contrast, Ivory Coast’s cumulative arrivals of cocoa beans at ports were 1.779 million tonnes by 31 March 2023, a 4.8 percent decrease from the previous season.

The report states that the difference of 89,000 tonnes in Ivory Coast‘s ports arrivals and the increase of 85,360 tonnes in Ghana’s purchases resulted in a slightly negative net effect on the total supply of cocoa beans from the world’s top-two cocoa producers. The total supply for the first half of 2022/23 was estimated at 2,345,846 tonnes, slightly down by 0.2 percent compared to the previous season.

The report also notes that the current situation may change as the mid-crop progresses. However, it indicates that Ghana has overtaken Ivory Coast in cocoa production, a remarkable development in the global cocoa market.

Cocoa industry analysts have commented that this is a significant achievement for Ghana, which has been implementing various initiatives to boost its cocoa production and quality. Some of these initiatives include modern farming techniques, better access to credit and markets, increased investment in infrastructure, free seedlings, subsidised fertilisers and pesticides, training for farmers, elimination of child labour, and guaranteed minimum price for cocoa beans.

However, the report also highlights some challenges facing the cocoa industry, such as climate change and disease outbreaks, which have affected cocoa production in recent years. The report urges more investment in research and development to address these challenges.

The report also shows that cocoa bean stocks held in Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) Futures licensed warehouses in Europe and the United States are high compared to the previous season. However, they have declined compared to the levels seen at the start of the 2022/23 season.

Regarding futures price developments, the report shows that prices of the front-month cocoa futures contract were higher year-on-year on both the London and New York markets in March 2023. The average price in London was US$2,553 per tonne, up by 12 percent compared to March 2022. The average price in New York was US$2,778 per tonne, up by 8 percent compared to March 2022.

  • King Charles III: South Africans demand return of diamond in British crown jewels

King Charles III: South Africans demand return of diamond in British crown jewels

As Britain prepares for the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday, some South Africans are calling for the return of a huge diamond that is set in the royal sceptre and was taken from their country more than a century ago.

The diamond, known as the Star of Africa or Cullinan I, is the largest clear-cut diamond in the world, weighing 530 carats (106 grams). It was discovered in South Africa in 1905 and presented to King Edward VII in 1907 by the colonial government of Transvaal, which was then under British rule.

Holding the Cullinan Diamond: Frederick Wells, the surface manager of the Premier Mine, poses with the Cullinan Diamond that he found in 1905. The photographer of this image is unknown.

The Star of Africa is one of nine stones that were cut from the original Cullinan diamond, which weighed 3,106 carats (621 grams) and was the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found. The other eight stones are also part of the British crown jewels or belong to Queen Elizabeth II.

Some South Africans have launched an online petition, which has gathered about 8,000 signatures, to demand that the Star of Africa be returned to its rightful owners. They argue that the diamond was stolen from them during colonial times and that it should be a symbol of their pride, heritage and culture.

“The British monarchy must play its part in breaking this colonial relationship by acknowledging the role that it played,” said Everisto Benyera, associate professor of African Politics at the University of South Africa in Pretoria. “And one of the biggest ways that it can acknowledge is to stop using our diamonds on their regalia, is to stop using our resources during their ceremonies.”

The British government has not responded to the petition, but it has previously rejected similar requests to return artefacts and artworks that were taken from former colonies. It maintains that the crown jewels are part of Britain’s national heritage and that they are better preserved and displayed in British museums and institutions.

The Star of Africa will be seen by millions of people around the world on Saturday, when it will be held by King Charles III at his coronation. The diamond is mounted in the head of the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross, which is one of the most important symbols of royal authority. The sceptre was redesigned in 1910 to accommodate the Star of Africa.

The Star of Africa is also known as Cullinan I because it was cut from the Cullinan diamond, which was named after Thomas Cullinan, who owned the mine where it was found. The Cullinan diamond was mined near Pretoria on January 26, 1905. It was so large and exceptional that it was initially mistaken for a piece of glass.

The Cullinan diamond was put on sale in London in April 1905, but it did not attract any buyers for two years. In 1907, the Transvaal government decided to buy it for £150,000 and present it to King Edward VII as a gesture of loyalty and goodwill. The king accepted the gift and entrusted it to a Dutch jeweller named Joseph Asscher to cut it into smaller stones.

Asscher spent several months studying the diamond before he made his first cut on February 10, 1908. He fainted after he successfully split the diamond into two pieces. He then cut nine major stones and 96 smaller ones from the original Cullinan diamond. The largest stone was named Cullinan I or Star of Africa and given to King Edward VII. The second-largest stone was named Cullinan II or Second Star of Africa and set in the Imperial State Crown.

The Star of Africa has been held by every British monarch since King Edward VII. It has been used at coronations, jubilees and state openings of parliament. It has also been displayed at various exhibitions around the world, including South Africa in 1994. It is estimated to be worth more than $400 million today.

  • Sickle cell disease detected in 100 children in Upper East Region

Sickle cell disease detected in 100 children in Upper East Region

The Navrongo Health Research Centre (NHRC) has diagnosed about 100 children with sickle cell disease in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality and the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region.

The children, who are below five years old, were screened using a new device called Gazelle, which was launched last year to enable faster and easier diagnosis of the disease.

The NHRC has also introduced a new app called Vula, which allows health workers at the periphery to consult with doctors at the hospital online and get advice on how to manage and refer sickle cell patients.

The app, which was sponsored by South Africa through Novartis, is expected to reduce sickle cell related mortalities and improve access to care.

The Director of the NHRC, Dr Patrick Odum Ansah, told the media that the Centre had screened over 4,700 children so far and found that over 100 of them had sickle cell disease.

He said this was a significant number and that the Centre was concerned about their health and well-being.

He said the app would be implemented in ten selected health centres and CHPS compounds where the sickle cell project was being carried out.

He said the app would help health workers to diagnose and manage sickle cell patients more effectively and avoid unnecessary referrals.

He said the NHRC was committed to minimising the menace of sickle cell and the misconception about the disease in the area.

He also appealed to parents and guardians to take their children for screening and treatment as soon as possible.

Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder that affects the red blood cells and causes them to become sickle-shaped.

This can lead to various complications such as anaemia, infections, pain crises, organ damage and stroke. The disease is common in sub-Saharan Africa where malaria is prevalent.

The NHRC is one of the leading health research institutions in Ghana and has been conducting various studies on diseases such as malaria, meningitis, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

The Centre also collaborates with other national and international partners to improve health outcomes in the country.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that affects the red blood cells and causes them to become sickle-shaped. This can lead to various complications such as anaemia, infections, pain crises, organ damage and stroke. The disease is common in sub-Saharan Africa where malaria is prevalent.

SCD is a significant public health burden in Ghana. Recent studies indicate that 2% of Ghanaian newborns are affected by SCD; one in three Ghanaians has the haemoglobin S and/or C gene. The disease is more prevalent in the northern regions of the country, where malaria transmission is high and health facilities are scarce.

The challenges in administering healthcare to sickle patients in Ghana include lack of awareness, stigma, discrimination, inadequate screening, diagnosis and treatment services, high cost of drugs and supplies, and poor referral systems. Many patients suffer from chronic pain, infections, organ damage and premature death.

The government of Ghana and its partners have been implementing various interventions to assist the process of managing and preventing SCD. These include:

    • The establishment of a national newborn screening programme for SCD in 2010, which covers all 10 regions of the country and aims to screen all newborns within 28 days of birth.
    • The introduction of a new device called Gazelle, which was launched in 2019, to enable faster and easier diagnosis of SCD in children below five years old.
    • The introduction of a new app called Vula, which was launched in 2021, to allow health workers at the periphery to consult with doctors at the hospital online and get advice on how to manage and refer sickle cell patients.
    • The provision of hydroxyurea, a drug that reduces the frequency and severity of pain crises and other complications of SCD, to patients at a subsidised cost through the national health insurance scheme.
    • The promotion of public education and awareness campaigns on SCD, its causes, symptoms, treatment and prevention.

These interventions have been yielding positive results in improving the quality of life and survival of sickle cell patients in Ghana, especially in the Upper East Region where the Navrongo Health Research Centre (NHRC) has been conducting various studies on SCD.

  • Ministry of Information calls for justice for attacked Dagbon FM journalist

The Ministry of Information has expressed concern over the alleged assault of Abubakari Sadiq Gariba, a radio presenter at Dagbon FM in Tamale.

The Ministry has called on the police and other relevant agencies to investigate and prosecute the two attackers who assaulted Mr. Gariba on World Press Freedom Day.

Mr. Gariba claims that he was attacked because he criticized one of the assailants during a live radio show.

A video of the incident shows the two men threatening and assaulting the presenter, who eventually left the studio with them.

The Ministry has strongly condemned the attack, stating that it is unacceptable and that Ghana must uphold its status as a country that respects press freedom.

In a statement, the Ministry said, “Attacks on journalists should not be tolerated. Severe and speedy response from law enforcement agencies is necessary to prevent copycat acts and maintain Ghana’s status in upholding press freedom.”

May 3rd marked World Press Freedom Day, which commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration for the Development of a Free, Independent and Pluralistic African Press.

The theme for this year’s celebration was “30 years after the Windhoek declaration: Information as a Public Good.”

Speaking at the national event, the UN Resident Coordinator for Ghana, Mr. Charles Abani, emphasized the importance of credible and reliable information in the lives of people, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He praised journalists for their professionalism and called on them to avoid sensationalism and incitement.

Similarly, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, stressed the significance of the right to free expression in the nation’s development.

He urged media outlets to avoid excessive politicization and to consolidate Ghana’s democratic gains.

He also advised journalists to reject any politicians who poison the media atmosphere with provocative remarks.

    Attacks on journalists in Ghana

Ghana is often regarded as a beacon of democracy and press freedom in West Africa, but the country has also witnessed several cases of attacks on journalists and media outlets over the years.

These attacks have included physical assaults, threats, arbitrary arrests, detentions, and even killings.

One of the most notorious cases of attacks on journalists in Ghana was the murder of Ahmed Hussein-Suale, an investigative journalist who worked with Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his Tiger Eye PI team.

Hussein-Suale was shot dead by unknown assailants on a motorbike on January 16, 2019, after he had exposed corruption in Ghanaian football.

Another prominent case was the assault on Latif Iddrisu, a journalist with Joy FM, who was beaten by police officers at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra on March 27, 2018.

Iddrisu had gone there to cover the arrest of a deputy general secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) party.

Other cases of attacks on journalists in Ghana have involved security agents, political party supporters, public officials, and private individuals.

According to the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), a regional media watchdog, there were 31 incidents of violations against journalists and media outlets in Ghana in 2020.

These violations included physical attacks, threats, arrests, detentions, seizure or destruction of equipment, censorship, and closure of media houses.

The MFWA also reported that between January and June 2021, there were nine cases of violations against journalists and media outlets in Ghana, most of which were perpetrated by security agents.

These violations included physical attacks, threats, arrests, detentions, and seizure or destruction of equipment.

These attacks against journalists in Ghana have been increasing and intensifying — and the threat of physical violence is real.

The journalist safety watchdog organisation, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) documented in May 2021, a total of 14 cases of abusive treatment of journalists in Ghana — five arrests and nine cases of violence — since the start of 2021.

    • Choose the song that matches the one you were humming or singing.
    • If you don’t find a match, try humming or singing the melody again.
    • If you’re using the Google app, you can also save the identified song to your music streaming service, such as Spotify or YouTube Music, to listen to it later.

But wait, there’s more! The feature also allows you to search for songs by typing in the lyrics, even if you don’t know the name of the song or the artist. Simply type in a few words from the song lyrics, and Google will show you a list of possible matches.

And there you have it – it’s that simple!

The “Hum to Search” feature has received a lot of positive feedback since its launch, with many users praising its accuracy and convenience. It’s a fun and entertaining way to discover new music or rediscover old favourites that you may have forgotten about.

So, next time you find yourself humming a tune and can’t remember the name of the song, give “Hum to Search” a try. You might just be pleasantly surprised at how well it works!

In addition to its practical use for identifying songs, “Hum to Search” has also become a popular way for users to engage with the feature in a fun and creative way. Social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram have seen a surge in videos of users humming or singing popular songs, and then revealing the song’s name and artist using the “Hum to Search” feature.

Some users have even turned it into a game by challenging their friends to hum or sing a song and then see who can identify it using “Hum to Search” the fastest. It’s a great way to bond over music and discover new songs that you may not have heard before.

While the feature has been praised for its accuracy, there are still some limitations. For example, if you’re humming a song with a unique melody or a lesser-known artist, the algorithm may not be able to identify it. Additionally, the feature may not work as well in noisy environments or if the user’s humming or singing is not clear enough.

Despite these limitations, “Hum to Search” is still a valuable tool for music lovers and a testament to the power of machine learning and artificial intelligence. It’s also an example of how technology can be used to enhance our daily lives and make everyday tasks easier and more enjoyable.

So if you’re someone who loves music and has ever struggled to identify a song stuck in your head, then “Hum to Search” is definitely worth checking!

  • How Ablakwa ‘stole’ photo of US National Cathedral consultant allegedly paid USD 6m by govt

How Ablakwa ‘stole’ photo of US National Cathedral consultant allegedly paid USD 6m by govt

Member of Parliament for North Tongu and anti-corruption crusader Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has been relentless in his pursuit to uncover all alleged corrupt activities surrounding the National Cathedral project in Ghana.

The latest bombshell is photos and details of one Mr Cary Lee Summers, who has reportedly received some US$6m from the government as the Consultant for the United States on Ghana’s National Cathedral project.

In a detailed Facebook post updating Ghanaians on his recent discovery about the project, Ablakwa outlined some questionable decisions and transactions involved in the acquisition of a certificate of incorporation for the NC in the United States of America.

During his investigations in the United States of America, Mr Ablakwa visited several venues and took pictures to support his exposé. In two of these pictures, a Caucasian male who appears to be in his fifties is seen lurking in the background.

Ablakwa described the man as Mr Cary Lee Summers in his Facebook post and said, “Mr Summers made it into my pictures while briskly entering his car,” suggesting that Mr Summers’ picture was not deliberately taken.

    How did this come about?

Ablakwa disclosed in his report that he had visited Springfield, Missouri in pursuit of the truth about an address Mr Cary Lee Summers provided as his company, the Nehemiah Group’s address, which according to Ablakwa he also provides on official documents filed with US authorities.

According to Ablakwa, this decision stemmed from the information gathered that “on the ‘National’ Cathedral website, the website of Nehemiahgroup.io, and with official documents filed with US authorities, Cary Lee Summers provides this address ‘3119 S Scenic Ave, Suite A, Springfield, MO 65807,’ as the physical address of the Nehemiah Group.

Upon arrival, Ablakwa recounts that there was nothing at the location concerning Nehemiah Group. Instead, he and his team spotted “a ramshackle warehouse with the inscription: Churchill Coffee Company, Wholesale Division.” It was at this point Mr. Summers would show up.

The moment where Mr. Summers’ pictures were “taken” by Mr Ablakwa briefly followed after Mr Summers reportedly stepped out of a coffee wholesale division nearby and passed in the background of some pictures Mr Ablakwa was taking of himself at the location as evidence of his findings.

“While I was assessing the shacky warehouse which has portions used as a gym, Mr. Cary Lee Summers stepped out of his coffee wholesale division and made it into my pictures while briskly entering his car in very casual attire,” he wrote.

The alleged Mr. Summers had on a black T-shirt and what looked like American flag-branded bike shorts with grey sneakers. He also has tucked to his chest, what looked like other clothes and a coffee cup in his hand.

“How on earth did a Nehemiah Group address with its CEO keeping our colossal US$6 million under a bankrupt economy lead us to a warehouse?” he quizzed.

While some argue that the alleged pictures of Mr. Summers were inappropriately or unethically acquired, others assert that Mr. Ablakwa did not maliciously take those pictures as they just happened to be candid photos that have a passer-by that happens to be Mr. Summers.

This is part of the several revelations in Part 1 of Ablakwa’s latest “National” Cathedral exposé. Ablakwa’s dedication to uncovering alleged corrupt activities surrounding the National Cathedral project has gained him a reputation as an anti-corruption crusader.

“In this latest instalment of ‘National’ Cathedral transgressions, my international partners and I will be focusing attention on findings from our investigations into the Akufo-Addo government’s cathedral operations in the United States of America,” Ablakwa wrote.

Okudzeto Ablakwa has been vocal about his opposition to the National Cathedral project, which is a government-sponsored initiative to build a Christian worship centre in Accra.

He has made countless allegations of corruption and fraud against the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral and its secretary, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng. He claims that the project will cost the country about $1 billion, instead of the initial $100 million budget, and has promised to release more explosive documents.

Today, a court ruling on a contempt application filed by Rev. Kusi Boateng against him went in his favour.

In response, he wrote on Facebook, “It’s certainly great that an Accra High Court today dismissed Kwabena Adu Gyamfi & Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng’s contempt application which demanded that I be committed to prison with cost of GHS10,000 awarded against him. Now the distraction is off; expect more US explosives on Thursday. For God and Country. Ghana First.”

He says he will not be silenced by the legal threats and will continue to expose the truth about the National Cathedral.

  • Finance Ministry to settle outstanding coupons on April 28

Finance Ministry to settle outstanding coupons on April 28

The Finance Ministry has announced that it will settle outstanding debts on coupons by April 28, 2023.

The decision was reached after an engagement with the leadership of the Coalition of Individual Bondholders Groups on the timelines of payment of outstanding domestic debt obligations.

The meeting was chaired by Hon. Deputy Minister Abena Osei-Asare, MP, and it was agreed that the Joint Technical Committee constituted on 18th January 2023, would reconvene and agree on a pathway towards the settlement of the outstanding debt obligations by 28th April 2023.

The announcement follows a petition to President Akufo-Addo by the Coalition of Individual Bondholders Groups on April 11, regarding the non-payment of old bonds that were not part of the recent domestic debt exchange program.

The groups made up of the Ghana Individual Bondholders Forum (IBF) and the Individual Bond Holders Association of Ghana (IBHAG), regretted that the Finance Ministry had consistently defaulted in paying the bonds after they matured.

In a statement signed by the Convener of IBF, Senyo Hosi, and Convener of IBHAG, Dr. Joel Djangma, the groups expressed their disappointment and noted that the continuous delay or disregard for the payments is creating undue distress for fellow Ghanaians.

They also acknowledged the fiscal challenges that the government faces and expressed their willingness to cooperate over a mutually viable payment schedule and structure.

The Ministry of Finance thanked the Coalition of Individual Bondholders Groups and the Pensioner Bondholders Forum for their forbearance during the Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP) and subsequent administrative processes.

  • All about Alfred Obeng-Boateng: The MP sending constituents abroad for better opportunities

All about Alfred Obeng-Boateng: The MP sending constituents abroad for better opportunities

Alfred Obeng-Boateng is the Member of Parliament for Bibiani Anhwiaso-Bekwai Constituency in the Western North Region who has promised to deliver a unique proposition to his constituents.

Instead of the usual developmental issues such as roads, schools, water, electricity, health centres, etc., Obeng-Boateng has promised to deliver “greener pastures” – literally.

He has named the initiative the ‘Youth Greener Pastures Project’ and aims to send young people in the constituency to the United Kingdom and Europe to try and make a better life for themselves away from home.

Here are 10 facts about the MP:

    1. Hon. Obeng-Boateng was born in November 1973 and is an indigene of Subiri Nkwanta.
    2. He is a first-time Member of Parliament representing the governing New Patriotic Party.
    3. He is a lawyer by profession and has a Bachelor of Laws (2011) and Professional Legal Practice [Solicitor] (2015) qualifications.
    4. In between, he obtained a Master of Law in Oil and Gas in 2012.
    5. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Government Assurance Committee and is a member of the Communication Committee.
    6. Prior to entering Parliament, Obeng-Boateng served as Managing Director of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited [BOST].
    7. He also previously worked as Managing Director of APP Mining Services.
    8. He is the Group CEO of Approachers Ghana Limited, a company that publishes Senior High School textbooks.
    9. He is a Christian.
    10. The MP is known for undertaking developmental projects in his constituency.

Over the weekend, Obeng-Boateng announced that the first batch of the Greener Pastures Project will soon leave the shores of Ghana. The MP spoke about the imminent travel of the first cohort on April 8, 2023, at Baakokrom, a suburb of Sefwi Bekwai. He was in the area to commission a mechanized borehole for the community.

In 2022, Hon. Alfred Obeng-Boateng announced that 100 youths in the Municipality would fly to the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe to seek greener pastures. The youth in the area were excited about the initiative, and it has since attracted the attention of residents in the constituency and the Western North Region as a whole.

However, the project has elicited varied reactions from people on social media.

  • Ghanaian ex-soldier ordered by UK court to repay £70k for lying about health in £1.6m lawsuit

Ghanaian ex-soldier ordered by UK court to repay £70k for lying about health in £1.6m lawsuit

Former British Army soldier, Michael Mantey, who sued the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for £1.6 million over a non-freezing cold injury he suffered while on duty in Estonia in late 2017, has been ordered to pay a court bill of over £70,000 after he was caught on video walking without a stick and wearing sandals.

Mantey, who had claimed that he could only walk with the aid of a stick and had to wear several layers of clothing due to his injury, dropped the case after the MoD presented the surveillance footage.

The judge, Mr Justice Eyre, found Mantey’s claim to be “fundamentally dishonest” as medical experts could find “no medical explanation” for the difference in appearance and symptoms, and said that the former soldier had “deliberately presented himself in a false manner” and “deliberately gave a false account of his symptoms.”

Mr. Mantey suffered reportedly a NCFI injury when he had to sleep in the cold without a tent.

NCFI, also known as Non-Freezing Cold Injury, is a specific kind of injury that affects hands and feet when they are exposed to extremely cold and damp conditions. It was initially observed in soldiers during World War I who were fighting in the trenches. This injury occurs due to the body’s tissue being exposed to prolonged wetness and extreme coldness.

The Ghana-born ex-soldier claimed that he was subjected to other periods of working in damagingly cold temperatures and was told to “man up” when he complained to his superiors.

As part of his claim, Mr. Mantey stated that he incurred “additional heating costs” through having to keep his house warmer than he would otherwise have done and had to “purchase warmer clothing.”

According to him, the discomfort in his feet, coupled with a back problem, made walking a challenging task and thus had to rely on a walking stick for mobility.

Mantey joined the British Army in 2009 and worked for the 22 and 26 Engineer Regiments until his medical discharge in January 2020.

During the trial, Mr Mantey provided evidence refuting any claims of dishonesty by stating that on good days with effective medication, he can walk without a stick.

He expressed a desire for others to understand the daily struggles he faces, indicating that if people witnessed his experiences firsthand, they might reconsider their assumptions about him.

Mr Mantey emphasized the severity of his injuries and the fact that he is in constant pain, which can occur at any time, catching him off guard.

The footage shown in court only captures one day of his life, and he wants people to understand that his condition is a lifelong struggle.

‘If only someone could see what I go through every day, then this story could be re-written. This is just one day of footage. I have been told my injuries would stay with me forever. Pain comes when you’re not prepared for it. It comes when it wants to come..,’ he said.

However, according to the judge, Mr Mantey did not experience the symptoms and reduced functionality he reported to various medical professionals in 2021 and 2022.

‘He chose to report symptoms which he knew were false and from which he was not suffering. He did so in the context of a substantial damages claim,’ he said.

‘The only possible explanation is that he did so deliberately and with a view to enhancing the value of the claim. Such conduct was clearly dishonest.

‘I find on the balance of probabilities that Mr Mantey suffered a minor NCFI, from which he had fully recovered at some point before September 2021.

‘He dishonestly portrayed himself as having suffered a more serious injury which had a continuing and disabling effect, doing so for financial gain.

‘That dishonesty tainted the whole of the claim. It went to the heart of the claim; it substantially affected the presentation of the case as a whole; and led to a significant inflation in the claim’s value.

‘Putting it shortly, there was dishonesty as to a central feature of the case, namely the extent and continuing effect of Mr Mantey’s injuries.’

As a result of this finding, Mr. Mantey is now responsible for paying the Ministry of Defense’s legal fees, which are expected to exceed £70,000.

  • All NPP MPs stand by Byran Acheampong’s comment – Majority Chief Whip

All NPP MPs stand by Byran Acheampong’s comment – Majority Chief Whip

Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam/Adoagyiri Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mr Frank Annoh-Dompreh has affirmed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) full support for Minister of Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong’s recent remarks on the NPP’s commitment to retaining power at all costs, despite concerns over potential national security implications.

Mr Acheampong, who is also a former Minister of State in Charge of National Security, made this assertion when he addressed party supporters at Mpraeso on Saturday, 8th April 2023 and emphasised the party’s resolve to never hand over power to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) by any means necessary.

“NDC party will collapse. If the NDC dares to use threats, Violence, and foolishness in the 2024 election, we will let them know we have the men. We will show them that we have the men. We have the men![He screamed to emphasise]. It will never happen that we the NPP will stand on a platform to hand over power to the NDC. It will never happen! We will make sure NPP remain in government at all cost”.

He also stressed his party’s ability to develop the nation by citing how the government’s recent economic interventions have started yielding positive results, reflecting in the stabilisation of the cedi and the reduction in fuel prices.

While several Ghanaians and members of the opposition have condemned Mr Acheampong’s statement, his party however, is full support of his sentiments.

In a Facebook post addressing Mr Acheampong’s critics and those calling for his restraint in addressing such issues as the general elections approach, Mr Annoh-Dompreh expressed total support for his fellow party member and asked all critics to “leave Bryan alone”.

He accused the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of hypocrisy in their criticisms.

This is because the NDC in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, directly addressing Mr Acheampong’s comments, chided the MP for his unfortunate words and accused the NPP of attempting to subvert the will of the people in 2024, and assured that the NDC will also do everything possible within its power to protect the democratic will and the sovereignty of the Ghanaian people.

“The NDC, a party that both in the years 2001 and 2017, handed power to NPP when the people of Ghana voted for the NPP, wants to assure Ghanaians that we SHALL DO EVERYTHING that is necessary to protect the democratic will and the sovereignty of the Ghanaian people. We wish to assure the good people of Ghana of our resolve and readiness to do whatever is necessary to preserve the democratic will of the people – even at the peril of our lives. The supreme will of the Ghanaian electorate will be manifested come December 7, 2024.”

In rebuttal, the NPP also dismissed the NDC’s concerns and accused them of having ill-founded and hypocritical motives and thriving on diabolic propaganda with an ill attempt to emotionally blackmail Ghanaians in furtherance of their selfish political interest.

This is not the first time a Ghanaian politician has used strong statements to describe their party’s resilience.

The NPP cited similar statements by former President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC National Chairman, Asiedu Nketiah in previous years and expressed how as such, the NDC has no moral right to condemn or attack Bryan Acheampong.

“If anybody has to be arrested by the Police for treasonable comments, then certainly it is John Dramani Mahama for his continuous “Do or die for the NDC” in reference to the 2024 general elections, and Asidedu Nketiah for his brazen proclamation that members of the NDC are willing to sacrifice their lives to win the 2024 elections.

The use of such strong language in Ghanaian politics is unfortunately common. However, as the country approaches the 2024 general elections, the use of such rhetoric has the potential to compromise national security. It is crucial for all political parties to demonstrate restraint in their language and actions to ensure a peaceful and fair electoral process.
