  • Let’s enforce safety protocols at workplaces AOMCs Board Chair

The Chairman of the Board of Governors of Association of Oil Marketing Companies (AOMCs), Mr. Henry Akwaboah, has urged oil marketing companies in the country to consistently enforce safety protocols at workplaces.

According to him, achieving incident-free operations within the industry, offices and retail outlets is a collective responsibility that requires all hands on deck.

Speaking at the launch of 2021 AOMCs Safety Week Celebration in Accra-GIMPA on Monday, 7 June 2021, Mr. Akwaboah said: “The theme for this year’s celebration is a reminder to all of us that achieving incident-free operations at workplaces requires the involvement of all persons in the organization from the Chief Executive Officer to the lower rank under the chain of command. Particularly, leaders of organizations need to demonstrate unwavering personal attitude to inculcate such character in employees”.

In view of the above, CEO of the Association of Oil Marketing Companies Mr. Kwaku Agyemang-Duah says the outcome of deliberations of the week-long safety celebration will be compiled to enhance learning lessons for industry players to intensify public education solely to improve operations in the sector.

Contributing to the debate, the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, said the EPA will strictly hold state institutions and industry players to account making sure that culprits who fall foul of the law are dragged before a court.

According to him, “attitudinal change is crucial to transforming the sector. If we don’t change our attitudes, it will be difficult to get to where we want to get to”.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) James Oppong Boanu in a speech read on his behalf by ACP Kwasi Arhin said his office will clamp down on armed robbers attacks on retail outlets. According to him, the police will not ignore its lawful mandate.

“We are committed to our constitutional mandate of protecting property. Let me say that criminals who attack your retail outlets are operating as a network with some of your employees. Check the backgrounds of people before you employ them. Consult National Fire Service to train your personnel in order to overcome occupational hazards”.

Meanwhile, CEO of Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors Senyo Hosi has called for strict enforcement of laws to ensure safety in the industry. According to him, persons who fail to comply with standards protocols must be exposed, arrested, and prosecuted to deter others from wrongdoing.

For his part, CEO of Consumer Protection Agency Kofi Kapito was of the view that the only standard in the oil marketing sector is to ensure compliance in accordance with the law.

“The basic thing to do is to make sure our laws are obeyed. It’s basic. I don’t expect regulators to give me excuses when I report a matter to them”.

Chief Executive of Private Enterprise Federation Nana Osei Bonsu wants those who smoke at gas stations checked because sometimes they have no clue what collateral damage it will trigger.

Director-General of Ghana Standards Authority Prof. Alex Dodoo charged oil marketing companies to employ health safety officers at retail outlets to improve standards. • Groupe Nduom takes legal action against private and state organizations to retrieve funds

Groupe Nduom (GN) companies are pursuing multiple legal actions to collect funds from organizations who have defaulted in paying back funds provided to them to engage in various productive activities in the country, Today can report.

Our investigations showed that five (5) law firms had in the past three years been working to document, verify and process transactions between GN companies such as BlackShield/Gold Coast Fund Management and Gold Coast Advisors among others.

Some of these lawsuits are nearing the stage where judgment could be given by judges sitting in various courts across the country.

A representative of GN who in an interview with Today spoke on the condition of anonymity recalled that in 2019, the company published in the paper and other publications the names of debtors and gave notice for the individuals and companies to make contact to discuss repayment of the funds they took to engage in their various enterprises and projects.

Our further checks revealed that a small number went voluntarily to negotiate payment schedules.

“Sensing that others wanted to take undue advantage of the challenging situation the GN companies had been put under, the directors engaged the services of law firms to use the legal system to force collections of amounts due”, the GN representative said.

The organizations, the GN representative said, included various government agencies and private companies in health care, insurance, construction, warehousing and distribution, financial houses including savings and loans, microfinance, fund managers and others.

According to the GN spokesman, most of the organizations h failed to file defenses in court and had used various delay tactics to prolong the cases.
In one instance, the GN spokesperson said, a contractor on a government project used the public airwaves to deny owing anything but turned around in private to beg for forgiveness.

“That case is still in court. The Office of the Attorney General has been representing some of the state agencies named in the lawsuits”, the GN representative said.

“The important fact in all of these cases is that these are funds that belong to customers who invested their hard earned monies with GN companies, particularly BlackShield/Gold Coast Fund Management”, the GN spokesperson added.

Today further gathered that about sixty percent (60%) of the funds were due from government agencies that gave legitimate infrastructure project contracts to Ghanaian contractors prior to 2017 and gave an undertaking to pay the financiers.

Readers will recall that in the midst of the liquidity crisis faced by BlackShield, the management pleaded in writing with the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) to intervene with the Ministry of Finance and help collect monies due only to be told by a deputy director-general in a radio interview that “…SEC is not a debt collector”.

GN, according to its representative, has resolved to put all the funds collected from the debtors after paying legal and related expenses into an account in trust for its customers.

“Some judgments are expected in the month of June. The company also believes that there has been a deliberate agenda that has been implemented over the past four years to deny its related companies of the liquidity they need to meet their obligations”, the GN top manager said.

When pressed, the GN spokesman estimated the amounts to be collected including accrued interest to be close to five (5) billion Ghana Cedis.

The spokesperson promised that a list “will soon be published of those who owe monies and are hiding behind the revocation of licenses and challenges faced by some GN companies and using these as reasons not to pay up”.

The spokesman was clear with the fact that GN directors and shareholders have had enough of the name of the companies being dragged in the mud by state and private players.

They were particularly incensed by the deliberate and calculated statement about GN engaging in money laundering promising the beginning of legal actions against those who continue to spread such falsehoods.

  • Fire destroys part of Elmina fish market, two injured

Two persons were Monday injured in an inferno, which burnt fresh fish and property worth thousands of cedis in the Elmina Fish Market, leaving fishmongers and fishermen devastated.

The fire engulfed a wooden shed where several drums of premixed fuel are kept with fishing inputs.

One of the victims, whose injuries are severe, was rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Mena Ekua, a fishmonger, who witnessed the incident told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the fire started when premix fuel being transferred into a canoe by some fishermen got in contact with fire in a coalpot.

She said many of the people at the scene immediately dived into the Benya Lagoon, which prevented a possible high number of casualties.

Confirming the incident to the GNA in Cape Coast, DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, the Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Ghana National Fire Service, said his office received a call at about 1207 hours on the incident.

DOIII Hudu said the Elmina Fire station deployed a team to the scene and reinforcement was later called in from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) station.

He said the fire destroyed kaege quantities of fish, about 10 drums of premix fuel, a canoe, a power generator and other household items.

The PRO said due to the intensity of the inferno, some firefighters were positioned at the nearby Elmina Market Branch of the Kakum Rural Bank to protect it.

“Unfortunately, part of the roof of the bank is burnt and the heat from the fire has affected the walls of the bank,” he said.

DOIII Hudu said the victim whose injuries were not severe, told the team that they were transferring premix fuel into their canoe when it suddenly caught fire, engulfing the area within seconds.

He said the GNFS would commence an investigation into the cause of the incident tomorrow to identify the actual cause.

According to DOIII Hudu, there had been series of engagements with the fishing communities, especially Elmina, about the storage and safety of premix fuel, especially in Elmina.

Also, fire safety education had been organized many times to help prevent these kinds of incidents.

He urged the public to adhere to safety measures in their homes and workplaces.

  • Women in palm kernel oil processing work under harsh conditions

Women in small scale palm kernel oil processing at Koforidua-Ada in the New Juaben South Municipality work under hazardous conditions exposing them to health risks.

More than 70 women operate daily in the open under the mercy of the weather, using traditional methods, and have to suspend production whenever it rained.

The women use open fire, fuelled by lorry tyres and plastic materials, to boil the palm kernel for extraction of oil as part of the procedure and in the process inhale the smoke.

These women, working in groups, had been in the business for the past 15 years, which is their source of livelihoods, to cater for their families.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency to the production site, located on the main Koforidua-Somanya road, showed it lacked water facilities which is the main input in the production chain and toilet facilities, raising sanitation concerns.

Averagely, the groups together produce about 50 gallons (five-litre per gallon) of oil for the market on weekly basis, providing income for about 20 people in the process.

Madam Afua Mamprusi, the group leader, told the Ghana News Agency that they worked in about five groups and each group took turns weekly as a marketing strategy to ensure the even spread of profit and market share.

The producers source their raw material; the palm kernel, from villages and communities.

Madam Afua said the lack of water and toilet facilities made their work difficult, but they had no alternative.

She said the heat and smoke from the boiling process had affected their health as most women often complained of dizziness, chest pains, cough and general weakness.

She said when given the needed facilities and assistance, the centre could accommodate more women and increase production.

She, therefore, appealed to the Municipal Assembly to provide them with the necessary facilities to improve their business.

Another worker, Madam Gifty Daglo, said the site belonged to a private person who had often threatened to eject them.

She appealed for support to have a permanent working place and modern technology to expand their production lines.

She said palm kernel oil had health benefits and as more people were moving away from the consumption of vegetable oil, the women needed support in the form of modern equipment and facilities to meet growing market demands.

Torgbui Tsaku Asidigbe VI, Chief of Matamanu in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the torrential rainfall accompanied with windstorm caused havoc to some buildings and pulled down high tension electric wires in the town causing total blackout.

A Closed-circuit-Television (CCTV) recording of the incident reported to have occurred at a pre-school located at Ashongman estates in Accra, has since courted emotional reactions from social media users.

In the video sighted by GhanaWeb, a frustrated Clara could be seen coercively striving to push what looked like a liquid-based food substance down the throat of the frail baby.

Not perturbed by the cries of the innocent child and her visible attempts in gasping for breath, the caregiver in various instances pushed the fragile baby-hands of her victim behind her back like an uncooperative criminal resisting arrest, all in her endeavour to push food down the throat of the frail baby.

  • Small-scale miners hints of going to court over galamsey fight if negotiations with government fail

Abdul Razack Alhassan, the Spokesperson for the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners, has said his outfit will definitely seek redress in court over governments measures to clamp down galamsey only if negotiations with the government is not successful.

He told Joy FM in an interview monitored by GhanaWeb that, they would have to speak to their lawyers to test the law after President Akufo-Addo defended the drastic measures taken by his government to end galamsey operations in the country.

“We have three arms of government which are the Legislature, Judiciary and the Executive so if that is the position of the Executive that this is the way to go, I think we as Small-scale miners too will talk to our lawyers to test the law, whether what he is saying is true,” he said.

When asked if the Association will go to court?

Alhassan responded, “If the need be. We are using all the avenues; we are engaging the government. If it will be necessary for us to go to court, we are ready to go.”

He disclosed that, currently negotiations are being held between the Association and Lands Minister, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor to address the burning of excavators owned by some of its members during Operation Halt.

“He has given us the [assurance] that he will engage with that concessioner to see the way forward. That is why I said, we will use all the avenues, when we are exhausted with them and we are not getting the headway, we will move to court.

“Everything has been cleared to us today to us as small-scale miners because the initial communique we had, the direction was not to burn excavators but today, it has become clear from the President himself that he is ready for any action towards the court,” Alhassan said.

President Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, noted that the state agencies are justified in destroying confiscated excavators from individuals and companies found mining in water bodies and forest reserves despite its ban.

“I know there are some who believe that the ongoing exercise of ridding our water bodies and forest zones of harmful equipment and machinery is unlawful and, in some cases, harsh.

“I strongly disagree, and I would advise those who take a contrary view to go to court to vindicate their position if they so wish. That is what the rule of law is all about,” he stated.

  • Government urged to review prisons feeding fees

Some residents in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis have expressed discontent about the daily feeding fee of prisoners in the country and called on government to review it.

They said to reduce the pressure on government and decongest the prisons, non-custodial sentences could be considered to promote healthy living among the inmates.

These concerns came in the wake of agitation by some inmates of the Sekondi Prisons for improved nutrition and dieting.

The inmates were reported to have chanted war songs and boycotted their food, which they said did not offer any nourishment.

Each prisoner is allocated GHc1.80p daily by government.

Mr Joseph Assifuah, a former Unit Committee Member of Nkenya in Takoradi, told the Ghana News Agency that crimes such as pilfering, theft and stealing must not see offenders in remand but should be given some communal jobs amid counselling to reform them.

Mrs Nana Adjoa Pew, an Organisational Development Officer, called for change management in Ghana’s prisons to ensure they reformed rather than harden the offenders.

She said the feeding fee was woefully inadequate and must be increased as soon as possible, while calling on the public and benevolent organisations to support.

  • Parliamentary Select Committee on Health satisfied with coronavirus procedures at KIA

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Health has expressed satisfaction with the COVID-19 operational procedures for arriving passengers at the Kotoka International Airport.

It said any other observations would be discussed privately with the Airport authorities for solutions.

Members of the Committee, on Wednesday, toured the Airport COVID-19 Testing Centre to have first-hand information about the testing procedures for arrivals.

The tour was also for members to understand the dynamics and operations of the Testing Centre.

Nana Ayew Afriyie, the Chairman of the Committee, briefing the media after the tour, said: “We resumed Parliament yesterday and thought it prudent to tour the Airport, to know what happens as far as COVID-19 protocol is concerned, understand the situation at the moment for stakeholder discussions and redress.”

“We were taken through the processes at the Airport from the arrival of passengers to the exit point. We are impressed with what we saw with regard to the operational processes and any other observations will be discussed privately with the Airport authorities for solutions,” he said.

Mr Akandoh said a major concern was how Port Health officials came into contact with passengers before getting to know their status.

“There are other issues like the cost of testing, which was reduced from 150 dollars to 50 dollars, but I believe after the tour we will engage the Minister of Health and authorities at the Airport and the Ghana Health Service to have wider discussions on how to resolve these challenges,” he said.

Mr Yaw Kwakwa, the Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited, told the Committee that on arrival at the Airport, all passengers were screened using thermal scanning devices and were also required to fill a health declaration form.

He said the Company, as part of the processes, created banking booths at the Airport for passengers to verify online payment receipts before being ushered into testing booths for their blood samples to be taken with the results ready in 30 minutes.

Dr Patrict Kuma-Aboagye, the Director-General, Ghana Health Service, touching on the management of confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the Airport, said all persons with confirmed cases were handled by the Port Health Unit.

Following completion of the arrival procedures, they would be sent to the Ga East Municipal Hospital for further clinical assessment and management, he said. Dr Kuma-Aboagye said the government had put in place measures to halt a possible third outbreak of the COVID-19 disease in the country and urged those who had received the second vaccination against the virus to continue observing the safety protocols, including wearing face masks.

Dr Kudzo Seneadza, the Managing Director of Frontier Health Services, a certified laboratory at the Airport, assured the public that the company was ensuring quality testing services at the Airport.

  • State to refile witness statements in SSNIT OBS Project scandal

The Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs Yvonne Atakorah Obuobisa, has prayed an Accra High Court for some days to refile witness statements in the SSNIT $66 million Operational Business Suit (OBS) project case.

She said: “In view of the fact that we have filed new charge sheet, we pray the court for two to three weeks to refile our witness statements.”

“As soon as witness statements are filed we will call them (lawyers).”

Mr Abednego Tetteh Mensah, one of the lawyers for Mr Ernest Thompson, former Director-General of SSNIT, said they had been informed of the State’s submission and agreed on Thursday, June 17, 2021.

Defence Counsels of the accused persons prayed for a catalogue of the other documents filed by the State.

Lawyers of the accused persons asked that the State should also ensure that defence teams were served with all witness statements.

The Court, presided over by Justice Henry Kwofie, a Court of Appeal Judge, sitting with additional responsibility as a High Court judge, adjourned the matter to Thursday, June 17.

The five persons are being held by the State over the $66m SSNIT Operational Business Suite project, which was meant to revamp the operations of SSNIT through Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

They were initially dragged to court in July 2018, but the trial was put on hold following a legal tussle over the charges, which culminated in a ruling by the Supreme Court that 10 of the 29 charges relating to wilfully causing financial loss were defective and same did not have sufficient particulars as required by the 1992 Constitution.

Based on the ruling of the apex court of the land, the Attorney-General (A-G) hauled the accused persons before the High Court again after amending the charge sheet to include sufficient particulars.

Thompson is standing trial with four other accused persons: John Hagan Mensah, a former IT Manager at SSNIT; Juliet Hassana Kramer, the CEO of Perfect Business Systems; Caleb Kwaku Afaglo, a former Head of Management Information Systems (MIS) at SSNIT, and Peter Hayibor, the lawyer for SSNIT.

They have pleaded not guilty to 29 charges, including various counts of conspiracy to wilfully cause financial loss to the State and wilfully causing financial loss to the State to the tune of $15.3 million.

Thompson and Kramer separately pleaded not guilty to three counts of contravening the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663), while Kramer and Afaglo also pleaded not guilty to defrauding by false pretence.

Afaglo is alleged to have secured his employment at SSNIT with fake certificates and was accordingly charged with various counts of possession of forged documents and uttering forged documents.

  • Government urged to constitute boards of statutory organisations

Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has called on the Government to, as matter of urgency, constitute the boards of the statutory organisations like the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETfund) and National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

He said boards must also be constituted for District Assembly Common Fund and Ghana Road Fund as expected of the President.

Mr Iddrisu, in a submission in Parliament on Wednesday, drew the attention of the Government on the effects of the delay, and urged it to quickly name the boards yet to be established.

He described the issue as a matter of public importance and cited the Road Fund, that when properly constituted, would make Ghanaian contractors get their monthly releases.

He said government had a responsibility to protect the Ghanaian private sector and that duty must be extended to Ghanaian contractors who the Road Fund owed.

“Even if government cannot find money to pay them they should let the administrative machinery work,” Mr Iddrisu, the MP for Tamale South, said.

“Why is the Road Fund Board not constituted, why is it not functioning, how do we expect contractors to survive…from January to now,” he queried.

He asked the Government to explain why chief executives for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies had not yet been appointed by government.

“I do not share the view that this function or roles be reduced to ministerial role. I cannot imagine the Minister of Education wanting to come to Parliament to present the GETfund… that would not be acceptable,” Mr Iddrisu said.

“It must be the GETfund Board, solely constituted by the parent Act creating it”.

Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader, said the matter raised by the Minority Leader was of public importance, which the House must dialogue on.

He called for further engagement with government to resolve the matter.

  • Police officers accused of killing and burying 48-year-old man remanded

His Lordship Jojo Hagan of the Sunyani Magistrate Court has once again remanded into prison, three police officers and two other persons accused of assaulting a 48-year-old, Abu Gbahara, to death before secretly burying him.

The deceased was a suspect in the custody of the Seikwa Police.

This will be the third time the suspects have been remanded into custody since their arrest.

One of the suspects, a 59-year-old banker at Nkoranman Rural Bank was, however, granted bail by the court on health grounds.

The remanded suspects are General Constable Ebenezer Akuffo, 24, General Corporal Williams Akussung, 38, Chief Inspector Eric Aforo, 48, all police officers at the Seikwa station; Reuben Obeng, 22, and Aaron Abbey, 21, security guards.

They have all been asked to reappear before the court on Thursday, June 3, 2021, to enable police to complete investigations into the matter.

“The case has been adjourned because the police are not done with their investigations, and a case of this nature needs thorough investigation. The bail granted to the third accused person was granted by the Sunyani High Court 2 based on a motion filed by councils for the third accused person, and the court granted him bail due to health reasons. The court adjourned the bail cases of the rest of the accused persons to the third of June,” Inspector Emmanuel Sampson, a representative of the prosecutor in the case speaking to Citi News noted.

The deceased was arrested and kept in police custody for allegedly smashing the windscreen of a car belonging to the Manager of the Nkoraman Rural Bank with a stone.

The 48-year-old after the incident was allegedly beaten by the security officers of the bank and later sent to the police station after they realized he was getting weak.

Reports indicate the suspect became very ill after the police, allegedly, also subjected him to severe assault while in their custody.

He was subsequently rushed to the Seikwa Health Centre where he was pronounced dead.

The police officers allegedly failed to take his body to the morgue for keeps but ended up burying him secretly.

There is an ongoing operation by a joint military team comprising Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Navy and Ghana Air Force dubbed “Operation Halt” targeting the persons in mining communities and destroying their equipment.

  • Engineer charges media to investigate kickbacks in road constructions

Civil Engineer, Ing. Abdulai Mahama, has charged the media to start a campaign to investigate kickbacks paid for road construction contracts in the country.

The engineer was of the view that the practice of paying kickbacks especially for political contracts is a bad practice, especially when there is no transparency in the contracts awarded.

“When we are embarking on international contracts which is donor-funded there is a lot of transparency. It is possible that with these projects, the tendering process and other related process are devoid of a 10 percent kickback but when we are having political contracts, people are called to the table to come and take contracts at a fee,” he told Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show.

Based on this reasoning, he charged: “Can we have the media to track every contract in Ghana especially any contract beyond 5million to know if it was duly tendered for. When we get to that stage this suspicion of ten percent kickbacks which I know exists will be a thing of the past”.

Roads and Highway Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, on Sunday, 23rd May 2021, addressed the media on plans for the construction of our roads. Among the information he shared, he stated that government is set to complete 6,000 kilometres road out of 11,000 kilometres roads under the second ‘year of roads’ programme.

  • Galamsey is a leadership crisis – Prof. Joseph Osafo

Psychology Expert, Professor Joseph Osafo, has waded into discussions over the galamsey menace in Ghana.

Currently, in Ghana, there is a fierce war against illegal mining, also called galamsey, as a team of Military officers have been authorized to burn all galamsey equipment as well as remove all persons along with river bodies in mining areas.

Over 200 changfang machines and excavators have been destroyed by the task force.

Recently, the National Women’s Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfua became a victim to the Military operation dubbed ”Operation Halt” as her excavators were set on fire causing her to weep bitterly in her defence that she wasn’t doing galamsey.

On the galamsey fight, whereas some people believe the government is using the right approach, there is a school of thought that disagrees.

Member of Parliament(MP) for North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa is a member of the school of thought that disagrees with the government’s approach.

To him, burning the excavators will yield no results unless “one galamsey overlord, one real architect, an actual financier is arrested and prosecuted”.

He has suggested that, to end galamsey, the kingpins must be arrested.

“How come not even one architect behind this galamsey operation has been arrested? To start a galamsey operation, you need millions of Ghana cedis and so the real perpetrators are not those small boys or the youth who are risking their lives…instead of arresting these guys, we should make them an offer for them to lead us to the real kingpins; if we follow the chain, it will lead us to the barons. Unless we get the real perpetrators, we will always come back to square one,” he said in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’.

Speaking on the same platform, Prof. Joseph Osafo also described the galamsey menace as a leadership crisis.

He noted that there is no way galamsey activity could be carried out in a community without the notice of a leader in the community.

To him, like Hon. Ablakwa suggested the fight against galamsey will yield the required results only when the leaders become responsible.

“The galamsey issue is a leadership crisis. There’s no doubt. Every land is owned by somebody in Ghana . . . Every galamsey site is either in a town, a village or where people inhabit. So, who owns the place? Because wherever a person stays, there is a leader there. There is a Chief, an Abusuapanin, Assemblyman, DCE, Police Commander and so forth; so wherever this (galamsey) is happening, there is leadership there,” he said.

  • Publishing photos of suicide victims can trigger more cases – Psychological Association

Ghana Psychological Association has cautioned the media to be circumspect in publishing photos of persons who have succeeded in committing suicide.

Public Relations Officer of the Association, Madam Joy Debrah, speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5fm said, such acts could trigger more suicide cases.

According to her, people with suicide tendencies act on the success of other people they see in the media to carry out their act.

On the causes of suicide cases, she said the factors could include psychological issues, depression, financial difficulties, hopelessness, physical abuse of any kind, bullying, academic performance among others.

She explained to the news team that people with suicide tendencies speak about it hence when people tell others they want to commit suicide, it should not be treated as a joke.

She opined that people who receive such information from friends should see themselves as a lifeline to those who tell them of their intention to commit suicide.

She also asked the public not to assume that persons who seek psychological help or the services of a counsellor are mentally unstable.

Madam Joy Debrah said it would be prudent for people to seek help if they are depressed because suicide is not an option.

  • Why NDC didnt back #FixTheCountry campaign Asiedu Nketiah discloses

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, also known as General Mosquito has debunked claims that they were the masterminds behind the #Fixthecountry campaign.

A few weeks ago, a section of Ghanaians took to social media to protest over what they describe as “bad governance and the high cost of living” in a campaign dubbed #Fixthecountry.

The hashtag which trended for weeks followed an increase in prices of fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Some communicators of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) accused the NDC of sponsoring the campaign.

However, General Mosquito denies giving the conveners any form of backing.

“If we did that; NPP would have used us as the mobilizing tool; helping them in the end”

“Moreover, these are issues we’ve raised already and it’s good individuals have taken them up and leading the fight. Joining them will change it into an NDC, NPP affair” he said in a one-on-one interview on UTV.

  • Colombian protest leader Lucas Villa, who was shot eight times, dies

Colombian student activist Lucas Villa was declared brain dead Monday night, nearly a week after he was shot eight times at a peaceful protest against President Ivan Duque’s government, CNN Espanol reported, citing a statement from San Jorge de Pereira University Hospital where he was being treated.

His family and the government also confirmed his death on social media Tuesday.

The 37-year-old was one of three students shot by unknown gunmen on motorcycles at a demonstration on the evening of May 5 in Pereira, central Colombia.

“Continue dancing in each cloud and make everyone there happy, like you did here,” his sister, Nicole Villa wrote in a post on Instagram.

The death caused consternation in Colombia, as Villa was a well-known figure in Pereira, and doctors at San Jorge Hospital had expressed hopes he might recover from his wounds.

Duque commented on the protester’s death on Twitter writing: “We stand with the Villa family with deep sadness after the news of Lucas’ death. I repeat what I [said to] Mauricio, his father, that this becomes the opportunity to come together and reject violence. To the responsible [I wish] all the power of the law.”

The government is offering a reward of 100 million Colombian pesos ($27,000) in exchange for any “information to capture those responsible,” Minister of Defense Diego Molano wrote on Twitter, before expressing “all our commitment to finding those guilty for this atrocious crime.”

    What behind Colombia’s latest protests?

Colombians initially took to the streets on April 28 over proposed tax reforms put forward by Duque, who said the changes were “a necessity to keep the social programs going.”

The government has since withdrawn the reforms but the demonstrations have continued in response to security forces’ heavy-handed response to grievances.

Videos of anti-riot policemen using tear gas and batons against protesters have gone viral on social media, spreading beyond big cities and across the country.

Far from curbing the protests, alleged police brutality has become a focal point for the demonstrators, who are now calling for an independent, international inquiry into the deaths.

A total of 42 people, including one police officer, have been killed during nationwide protests in Colombia since April 28, according to the latest report from the country’s Ombudsman.

However, rights groups such as the Colombia-based NGO Temblores and US-based Human Rights Watch believe the death toll to be higher and say more than 45 people have died.

Molano also said on Twitter that 849 police officers have been injured, 647 people have been arrested, and 378 firearms and 72 explosive devices have been apprehended.
