  • GRA exceeded 2020 revised target Commissioner General

The Acting Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority Rev. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah has revealed the Ghana Revenue Authority exceeded its revised revenue target of GHc42,769.50 billion for the year 2020.

According to him, the authority was initially budgeted to collect tax revenue of GH¢47,253.95 billion for the 2020 fiscal year.

This represented a 7.6% growth over the actual tax revenue collections of GH¢43,907.12 billion for the 2019 fiscal year.

However, as a result of the impact of the Covid-19 global pandemic, the budget was revised to GH¢42,769.50 billion.

This represents 2.6% negative growth over the actual revenue collection of GH¢43,907.12 billion for 2019.

However, speaking to the media at a press soiree, the acting commissioner with excitement announced that despite the COVID-19 pandemic and its negative impact on businesses, the GRA was able to meet its 2020 revised revenue target.

The Authority was tasked to collect a revised tax revenue target of
GH¢42,769.50; as of December 2020, we had collected GH¢45,338.69 million exceeding the budget by GH¢2,569.19 million thus, with a positive deviation of 6.0%.

He added, though the GRA is yet to know from the finance ministry its revenue target for the year 2021, “it has set for itself an aggressive target to collect a provisional tax revenue of GH¢60 billion. This constitutes a 32.3% increase over the 2020 actual collection.”

He further stated, the Introduction of New Excise Tax Stamps, TIN/Ghana Card Replacement, E-Commerce, Restructuring of Domestic Tax Revenue Division, Deployment of Information Technology Tools, Tax Education among others are all part of the strategies to ensure the commission realizes its 2021 target.

He advised members of the public to be tax compliant “…so that together we can mobilize the needed revenue for national development and to get to the position whereas a country, we can be totally self-reliant and help to achieve the objectives of “Ghana Beyond Aid.”

One of the medical doctors arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office in connection with a recent crackdown on a baby-harvesting and human trafficking syndicate has admitted to selling more than 12 babies over the period.

This was revealed by the Executive Director for EOCO, Commissioner of Police Frank Adu-Poku (Rtd) in an interview with Accra-based Adom FM monitored by GhanaWeb, stated that his outfit’s collaborative investigation with the Ghana Medical and Dental Council has led to the unravelling of many secrets including the confession by the doctor.

“During our investigations and during the process, one of the doctors told us that he has sold about 12 babies. This tells us what is happening in our hospitals,” he stated.

Whiles failing to give further details on the revelation, COP Adu-Poku urged mothers to be vigilant especially during and after labour.

“Women should be vigilant when they are about to deliver because the moment you refuse to pay attention or a family member stops paying attention, it may become problematic,” he added.

Last week, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Ghana Medical and Dental Council through collaborative efforts arrested 11 people suspected to be involved in the harvesting of babies and human trafficking in some health facilities in the Greater Accra Region.

  • Applicant has not shown exceptional circumstance for review application of interrogatories – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has opposed to a motion on notice for review in respect of a dismissed application for interrogatories.

The Supreme Court unanimously dismissed the application for interrogatories saying interrogatories should be based on relevance.

The Petitioner, Mr John Dramani Mahama in the December 7 Presidential Election Petition case has however filed a review of the dismissed application for interrogatories.

Mr Mahama held that the interrogatories would narrow down to the issues set out for trial.

The EC in its affidavit in opposition sworn by Mrs Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Commission noted that the motion on notice for review did not show any exceptional circumstance necessitating the application for review.

“Besides, the application has not raised any specific miscarriage of Justice suffered by virtue of the decision of the court to refuse the application for interrogatories.

The EC says the decision by the Court to deny the application for interrogatories was made by the court in accordance with the dictates imposed by CI 99 of 2016 and the court ought not to change its compliance with the statute.

“I believe the application for review will not serve the interest of Justice but rather instruct the timely completion of the applicant’s (Mr Mahama) own case in court in accordance with CI 99.

The EC said the applicant (Mr Mahama) would not suffer any injury to his rights if the court dismissed the review application as he has the opportunity to solicit the answers he seeks now during cross-examination if he so wished, adding that “unless he is actually fishing and/or trying to delay the trial”.

“I believe there are no exceptional circumstance or legal basis for that to warrant the intervention of this honourable court in this application for review,” the EC argued.

Meanwhile, the EC has filed another motion for abridgement of time for the application for review.

The EC want the Supreme Court to hear the application for review on January 26 instead of January 28, this year.

The Commission says the abridgement of time was necessary for a speedy determination for the motion.

“I pray that in the interest of Justice and speedy determination of this matter and in line with timelines in CI 99 be abridged to January 26 subject to the convenience of the court”.

  • ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration in Ho not sanctioned – Police

Sergeant Prince Dogbatse, Public Affairs Officer of the Volta Regional Police Command, says the Command has not sanctioned an intended demonstration against the President’s nominee, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa as the new Regional Minister.

The demonstration termed, “Enough is Enough”, was aimed to express the disappointment by some “unknown group” calling itself “Volta NPP Grassroot for Justice” in the region on the renomination of Dr Letsa as Volta Regional Minister by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Sergeant Dogbatse in a press release copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) disclosed that the Command had information on the intended demonstration to be held on Monday, January 25.

He said although the Police was bound to provide security for “law-abiding citizens” properly organised to engage in legitimate activities including demonstrations, the upsurge of COVID-19 cases in the region could not allow the Group to embark on their intended action.

The Public Affairs Officer, who said the event could endanger public health and safety, cautioned all citizens to take note of the directive and be warned of the consequences of non-compliance.

“The Command per any properly organised special event by members of the public is duty-bound to provide security for law-abiding citizens to engage in such legitimate activities like demonstrations and processions.

He said the Command “in this critical time” was determined to support other key stakeholders in containing the pandemic to guarantee public health and safety.

Sergeant Dogbatse advised the public to continue to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols such as the proper wearing of the face or nose masks, social distancing, washing of hands regularly and sanitising hands often in order to contain the spread of the deadly pandemic.

The Volta region currently has 106 active cases and two deaths within two weeks with cases mainly within Ho, Hohoe, North Tongu and Ketu North.

  • Have you provided us nose masks that were not wearing? MP questioned after refusing handshakes

Attempts to get constituents of Bolgatanga East to put on their nose masks as a form of preventing them from contracting the deadly coronavirus generated a sort of misunderstanding between the people and their Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Dominic Ayine.

“I was in my constituency for a funeral where I met people without face masks and attempting to shake hands with me. I refused and insisted on them wearing their face masks, but they questioned me, have you provided us with some?” the lawmaker recounted.

According to the former Deputy Attorney General, sanctions on the mandatory wearing of face masks by the government is not being helpful to fighting the pandemic, hence the surge in the number of active cases in Ghana.

So far, 159 persons in Tema, 200 in Tesano and 85 persons in Koforidua and other parts of the country have been arrested for not complying with the COVID-19 protocols.

Dr. Dominic Ayine, therefore, wants the government to sustain the provision of free face masks to citizens to support people who are unable to afford one on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, lawyer and lecturer at the University of Ghana-Legon, Dr. Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee, stated that even though the wearing of the face masks has become particularly crucial in recent times, the seeming lack of comprehensive resounding education on its relevance has contributed to citizens deliberately flouting the law.

“The law is not realistic to enforce because a lot of Ghanaians would not be able to pay a designated fine after an arrest. We should be able to educate people intensively to understand the need to wear a face mask”, she pointed out.

  • Remove law that imposes charge on inbound international calls Telco Chamber

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has increased its calls for the removal of the law that establishes a charge of 19 cents per minute on inbound international calls on telecommunication companies.

According to the Head of Research and Communications at the Chamber, Derek Laryea, the law imposed is hampering the revenue generation efforts of telecommunication companies in the country.

“Year on year there is always a dip and I know in 2016 we had some policy statement just before the elections about looking at that tax policy. For us as the industry we believe it is a leakage and it also fuels SIM boxing. If I am charging 19 cent and my local call is about 4.8pesewas which is less than one cent, SIM Box fraudsters would take advantage,” he told the B&FT newspaper.

“More importantly the consumer behavior and pattern have changed and today you will see a lot of people making phone calls directed to over-the-top applications like WhatsApp, Zoom which is really the norm today at the back of the pandemic. I always make the argument that if I have a GH¢1 data and can do excess international call with it, why do I have to spend 19 cents which is obviously high for any consumer,” Derek Laryea stressed.

Meanwhile key findings of a Mobile Industry Transparency Initiative study conducted by the chamber showed that revenue accumulated to the state and telecommunications companies in Ghana has declined by over 200 percent in the past nine years since the law was established.

The findings also indicated that in 2010, revenue generated remained at about GH¢360 million while the figure has since declined to some GH¢107 million in 2019.

  • Goods from non-African countries not to enjoy AfCFTA preferential treatment

Goods exports by third-party non-African countries to African countries will not enjoy preferential treatments stipulated under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) trade pact.

This is according to the Secretary-General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, Wamkele Mene.

Addressing the issue of transshipment during the operation of AfCFTA, Mr Mene noted that although goods from non-African countries are welcomed into the continent, such goods or imports will not enjoy the incentives that bind the trade agreement between AfCFTA members.

“We are not saying there should be no goods from other countries, what we are saying is that goods that should enjoy the AfCFTA preferential treatment should be goods that are legitimately entitled to the AfCFTA preferential treatment,” he said.

“There will still be goods coming in from other parts of the world, but they will not be enjoying the preferential treatment that we have agreed to extend to ourselves as members of AfCFTA,” he added.

Speaking further, Mr Mene disclosed that no provision or protocol has yet been made to minimize the importation of goods from non-African countries during the implementation of AfCFTA.

He however believes that, despite the absence of such provision, a strong collaboration between Customs Officials of member countries will check goods transshipment on the continent during the operation of AfCFTA.

“This will depend on our robust application and implementation of our rules of origin regime and other necessary protocols. We will work with our Customs Officials to improve their capacity to check transshipment,” he stated.

Trading of goods between member countries per the rules of AfCFTA should attract zero duties with no limit on the quantity of goods that can be exported or imported between member countries.

  • Set up independent body to investigate Techiman South shooting incident NDC

The Bono East Regional office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to set up an independent body to investigate the shooting incident that occurred during the 2020 general election in the Techiman South Constituency.

In a petition signed by Mr Ali Mohammed Shamsudeen, the NDC Bono East Regional Secretary and made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Techiman on Thursday, said the party asked that the investigations into the post-election violence be conducted swiftly, and perpetrators made to face the full rigours of the law.

The post-election violence which happened at the Techiman Bonokyempem Hall on December 7, was characterised by sporadic gunshots, leaving two dead while five others sustained gunshot wounds.

The shooting started during the collation of the election results, when supporters of the NDC attempted to forcibly break into the hall, which forced the police to fire gunshots to disperse the crowd.

The Party said it had already sent a copy of the petition to the Bono East Regional Coordinating Council in Techiman to be forwarded to President Akufo-Addo.

“We cannot trust the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) because they have clearly shown that they cannot be neutral and transparent in this matter. Since perpetrators of this monstrous crime are their colleagues, they cannot do proper investigations,” it stated.

The petition indicated that until proper investigations are conducted into the matter and perpetrators brought to book, nothing can comfort the bereaved families as they seek justice.

“We expect that the police will not transfer any person who was either involved in the shooting incident or on duty at the Bonokyempem Hall on that fateful day until investigations are over,” it added.

“The Member of Parliament for Bekwai Constituency,” Mr Joseph Osei Owusu must also retract and render an unqualified apology to the deceased family and the injured people for assertions he made in the media that the police rather shot on criminals,” the petition stated.

Meanwhile, the Bono Regional Coordinating Council, has on behalf of government presented GH¢15,000 to the victims, and the bereaved families.

So far, the GNA gathered that four of the victims have been treated and discharged from hospitals, while one was still receiving treatment at the Wenchi Government Hospital.

  • Phase II of Kejetia project: Congestion blocking progress Contractors

The second phase of the Kejetia Redevelopment Project is suffering a major setback as contractors say congestion at the project site is contributing to the slow pace of work.

The company, Contracta Construction Ltd, UK, explains the influx of hawkers plying their trade around the project site is adversely affecting accessibility.

Although work is ongoing, officials of the company say traders have taken over pavements in the Central Business District, making transporting of construction materials to the project site almost impossible.

On May 2, 2019, President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo together with the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, cut sod for the commencement of Phase 2 of the redevelopment project of the market, but work is at its preliminary stage when 3news.com visited the project site.

Speaking on Akoma FMs morning show GhanAkoma on Tuesday, January 19, Community Relations Officer for Contracta Construction Ltd, UK Emmanuel Danso told host Aduanaba Kofi Asante that constant disruption by traders remains a major challenge, adding that it is impeding the completion of the project.

He explained that “repeated complaints to city authorities to decongest the area have yielded no results”.

Reacting to the claims, however, Kumasi mayor Osei Assibey Antwi explained that “the [Kumasi Metropolitan] Assembly is engaging stakeholders including market leaders and security agencies to evict the traders.”

He also added that “a roadmap will be outlined to relocate the traders soon”.

The 248 million Euro facility, which was supposed to serve as a trading hub to decongest the Central Business District, is being impeded by congestion.

The project, which was expected to be completed in 48 months, has delayed for two years due to human congestion around the project site.

  • Ghana needs only 50 parliamentarians and 20 ministers Kofi Bentil

The Vice President of policy think tank, IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has stated that Ghana does not need more than seventy (70) members of parliament and ministers.

His comment comes after President Akufo-Addo presented to parliament a list of nominees to be vetted for ministerial appointments.

The president, having been given a second term mandate, has decided to reduce his ministries from 36 to 30. This has essentially caused a reduction in the number of ministers who will serve in his new government as he has also served an indication that he will, unlike his first term, not be nominating deputy regional ministers.

Taking to his Facebook page, Mr Bentil said the government of Ghana with a total of 70 parliamentarians and ministers can achieve more than what others put together did.

He subsequently listed the Finance, Trade and Industry, Defence, Interior, Foreign Affairs, Food and Agriculture, Housing and Infrastructure, Energy, Education, Health, and Attorney General as the “only Ministries Ghana needs” adding that “all others will fit under them as functional desks or departments”.

He reiterated that “if these ministries work effectively, we won’t need the bloated expensive government we create” and that “we must use our resources better”.

For regional ministers, the Vice-President of IMANI said if, given the opportunity, he will “place all Regional Ministers under the Ministry of Interior and call them Regional Chief Executives”.

  • I’ll find you another job – Akufo-Addo consoles ex-ministers

It appears all hope is not lost yet for the former appointees who could not make the list of Akufo-Addo’s new ministers as the President has assured he will find them “possible roles” to play.

The President released a new list of Ministers on Thursday, January 21, 2021, who if approved by Parliament, will aid him in his second term.

Unlike the first term, the President has indicated that the number of ministers he will work with, in his new government will not exceed eighty-five (85), a decision that has resulted in many of the former appointees being pulled up.

But a statement issued by the Communications Directorate of the Jubilee House stated the President has promised the affected ministers he will find them another job in the larger government structure.

According to the statement signed by Acting Director of Communications at the Office of the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, Mr Akufo-Addo made the assurance when he had one-on-one meetings with both the outgoing and the incoming Ministers.

“On Wednesday, 20th January, and Thursday, 21st January, President Akufo-Addo held one-on-one meetings with the Ministers-Designate, as well as his first-term Ministers who will not transition into the new government, to break the news to them.” Portions of the statement read.

It added, “To the Ministers-Designate, President Akufo-Addo congratulated them on their nominations, and expressed his expectation that they will be promptly approved by Parliament, to allow them to start work forthwith. To the former Ministers, the President assured them possible roles to be played in the larger government structure, and wished them the best of luck in their future endeavours.”

The latest and new COVID-19 cases he indicated are being recorded from such gatherings and it is an indication for the country to reintroduce the restrictions.

He further called for the reintroduction of localized restrictions in hotspots or areas where the cases are spreading more.

“We need to immediately reintroduce restrictions on all weddings, parties, funerals, and other events. We cannot allow this to continue. We should also not hesitate to introduce localized restrictions,” he said.

He warned that the situation currently is not the best and the earlier we take steps to prevent the spread, the better.

Adding that health facilities are overstretched with pressure on medical officers.

The medical officer said if we do not take care, we will record more deaths. He again asked Ghanaians to pray for doctors and frontline health workers.

  • We should not be worried about current configuration of parliament Okudzeto Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called for a positive approach in the face of the nearly hung parliament that resulted from the 2020 general elections.

The equal membership of MPs from both the NPP and NDC sides of parliament which has had a direct effect on the membership of the Appointments Committee of the House has caused some people to express worry over what they say could bring about a lack of consensus and unnecessary delays in dealing with matters.

But speaking in an interview with Joynews monitored by GhanaWeb, the NDC MP expressed optimism about the situation saying, “I would like to stress that we need to be positive about the outcome of the 2020 election. What the Ghanaian people have done in virtually giving us a hung parliament is to invite us to work together and to request of us to build for ourselves a legislative organ which is not subservient, which is not a lame duck, which is not a rubber stamp. Which will be efficient in the pursuit of the principles of checks and balances, and the need for independence so far as the three arms of government is concerned.”

Speaking on the concerns raised, the MP said the opposition side of the House, holds a mindset of not being saboteurs but to be constructive pursuant to the supreme interest of the nation.

“People are scared, people are worried that Armageddon is upon us. I disagree and we must also emphasize that we in the NDC we are conscious of the fact that Ghanaians are watching, we do not have to be obstructionists, we do not have to be saboteurs or spoilers if you like. Our mindset is to be constructive; is to pursue the supreme national interest and I must emphasize this point,” he added.

According to Mr Okudzeto, NDC MPs are not oblivious of the consequences of being overly obstructive and will thus employ rationality in their dealings and engagements in the house.

  • COVID-19: New variant travels 50-70 times faster – GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has disclosed the new strain of the COVID-19 pandemic has a higher and faster infection rate as compared to the first strain.

The Director of Health Promotion at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, has shared that the new strain of the virus is transmitted between fifty to seventy (50-70) times faster.

According to him, Ghana has recorded cases of two different strains of the virus. One from the United Kingdom and another from South Africa.

“Both variants spread very fast and I am thinking they have the same symptoms as the first version of the virus. But, the only difference is that the transmission is very fast. The new variants travel between 50-70 times faster than the normal ones we know of”.

He noted that the different strains were imported into the country via the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) but these individuals were put under isolation.

“We all know that with the reopening of our borders, we required anyone coming into the country to come along with a PCR test from their country of origin, and upon their arrival to Ghana, they undergo the antigen test and asked to self isolate.

“However, we recently changed our policy a bit and insisted that anyone who tested positive for COVID-19 will be housed in our facilities for a second test”.

Dr. Dacosta noted that for the second test, the positive cases were put through genetic sequencing and that was when “we noticed they were infected with the new variants from the UK and South Africa”.

The Director of Health Promotion at the GHS assured the populace the positive cases of the new variants are receiving treatment in isolation and treatment centers under the Ghana Health Service.

    Background

Information from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) suggests multiple COVID-19 variants are circulating globally.

In the United Kingdom (UK), a new variant called B.1.1.7 has emerged with an unusually large number of mutations. This variant spreads more easily and quickly than other variants.

This variant was first detected in September 2020 and is now highly prevalent in London and southeast England. It has since been detected in numerous countries around the world, including the United States and Canada.

In South Africa, another variant called 1.351 has emerged independently of the variant detected in the UK. This variant, originally detected in early October, shares some mutations with the variant detected in the UK. There have been cases caused by this variant outside of South Africa, but it has not been detected in the US.

In Brazil, a variant called P.1 emerged and was identified in four travelers from Brazil, who were tested during routine screening at Haneda airport outside Tokyo, Japan. This variant contains a set of additional mutations that may affect its ability to be recognized by antibodies.

These variants seem to spread more easily and quickly than other variants, which may lead to more cases of COVID-19. Currently, there is no evidence that these variants cause more severe illness or increased risk of death.

However, an increase in the number of cases will put more strain on health care resources, lead to more hospitalizations, and potentially more deaths.

  • Psyche yourselves to wear masks- Kadjebi DCE admonishes students

Mr. Maxwell Kofi Asiedu, Kadjebi District Chief Executive (DCE), has called on students to observe the COVID-19 safety protocols especially, the wearing of face masks since the COVID-19 virus would be with the population for a long time.

He said the masks serve as a shield against person-to-person infection of a virus believed to be airborne and contaminates through cough, sneeze or speaking.

Mr. Asiedu made these remarks when he visited and addressed students of Kadjebi E.P Central Junior High School (JHS) at Kadjebi in the Oti Region as schools re-opened for academic work on Monday.

He urged the students to psyche themselves up to wear masks always, practice social distancing and avoid stigmatisation to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Majority of students in Adaklu Circuit resumes school without masks

Majority of pupils and students in the Adaklu Kodzobi Circuit of the Adaklu district have resumed school on Monday but without the essential tool of nose masks.

The expected nose masks from the government is yet to arrive leaving the students to their fate on re-opening day.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency showed many students and their teachers not wearing masks to protect themselves against the vagaries of the pandemic.

Mr. Edward Dzidza, Headteacher of Adaklu Kodzobi D/A Basic Schools told the GNA that they could not turn the pupils away though they failed to wear masks.

He said apart from the fumigation of the school, the promise by the Adaklu District Directorate of Education to provide them with nose masks for use by both teachers and pupils did not materialise.

The Headteacher, therefore, appealed to parents and guardians to provide their wards with nose masks while they await the allocation from the government.

Mr. Selorm Prince Kpenu, Headteachers of Adaklu Have D/A Junior High School said but for a few of the form two students, all the others came to the school without nose masks.

He said they only had four rolls of tissue and a gallon of liquid soap but was hopeful that the government would fulfil its promise of providing all Schools with nose masks and other safety items.

The story was the same at Adaklu Dzakpo and Adaklu Vodze D/A Basic Schools.

A teacher who spoke to the GNA on strict condition of anonymity said the likelihood of both teachers and students contracting the COVID-19 was very high since “we all travel from different locations before converging at the school.”

Students and pupils were seen cleaning, scrubbing the floors of the classrooms and desks for academic work to start.

  • Government should reexamine coronavirus punishment – Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists has appealed to the government to reconsider the punishment meted out to people who flout COVID-19 rules.

Public Relations Officer of the Association, Dr. Dennis Adu-Gyasi says the punishment is excessive and may also end up congesting the country’s prison and eventually aid in the spread of the deadly disease.

Though it is very important for the government to ensure that Ghanaians comply with the COVID-19 protocols, it is also very important to ensure that it does not increase astronomically.

Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia program, Dr. Adu-Gyasi explained that “there is the possibility that those who will flout COVID-19 protocols may not be able to pay for the fine and may end in prison.”

“When this should continue for a period of time, you will have the prisons congested, so we are pleading with the government to reconsider the punishment for COVID-19 protocols flouters,” he entreated.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says he has ordered the Inspector General of Police, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, to strictly enforce the mandatory wearing of nose masks as the nation continues to grapple with the Coronavirus pandemic.

During his COVID-19 update on Sunday, January 17, 2021, he added that the police are also to also crack the whip on business owners who continue to illegally operate pubs, beaches, and cinemas, despite the restriction to have them closed over the outbreak.

“I have instructed the Inspector General of Police to direct officers, men, and women of the Police Service to ensure the rigorous enforcement of the law on mask-wearing at all public places and in public transport.

“They are also to ensure the closure of all nightclubs, pubs, cinemas, and beaches that may be operating in defiance of the law. They will be assisted by the other security agencies if need be,” Nana Akufo-Addo stated.

The directive is hinged on his presidential oath to “dedicate myself to the service and well-being of the people of the Republic of Ghana, and to do right to all manner of persons”, hence his commitment to protect lives and livelihoods.

He further reminded all Ghanaians that severe punishments exist on our statute books for persons breaking the law on the mandatory wearing of masks.

“Should anyone be arrested by the security agencies disregarding this directive, that person will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law” of the land, he warned.

  • Every school must set up ‘Coronavirus Compliance Committee’ – Prof. Joseph Osafo

Professor Joseph Osafo, Head of Psychology at University of Ghana, has called on schools to set up a COVID-19 Compliance Committee to assist students and pupils in observing the COVID-19 protocols.

Schools across the country officially began today after 10 months closure due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced, during his 21st update on the pandemic, the resumption of kindergarten, Junior and Senior High Schools and tertiary institutions.

Kindergarten and JHS were to resume on Friday, January 15 but, according to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the schools are to officially open on Monday, January 18 with clean-up exercises.

Although schools have reopened, there are worries over the little children in adhering to the COVID-19 safety protocols as some fear the children might be exposed to the disease.

To put the matter to rest, Prof. Joseph Osafo has suggested a solution.

According to him, the various schools should have Compliance Committee whose duty will be to go round the school classrooms and campuses, particularly during break hours, to ensure the students and pupils are indeed wearing their nose masks and also taking all the precautionary measures to curb the spread of the disease.

”You will have to continuously monitor them…I don’t know what the teachers will do but my thinking and my suggestion is that schools should have certain Committees that are COVID-19 Compliance Committee. This means in some schools, they have security or people who whilst teaching is ongoing or school is on break, they can authorize the children to wear their masks. It can help because once they’re playing, teachers may not be around”, he told host Nana Yaw Kesseh on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”.

He also charged the schools to help the government by taking up the challenge to be innovative.

”Teachers and schools will have to be very innovative…Every school should see this as a challenge and opportunity.”
