  • Ghana FA DC orders Medeama to pay ex-striker Nathaniel Asamoah US$ 54,000

Medeama has been given an 18 November 2020 deadline to cough up US$ 54,000 to former player Nathaniel Asamoah and US$15,000 to the Ghana FA or suffer three points deduction for every match they will play in the 2020/21 Premier League season.

In parenthesis, the Mauve and Yellows will suffer a transfer ban (both domestic and international) for a period of one (1) year, should they fail to comply with the above on or before 18 December 2020.

A Ghana FA Disciplinary Committee ruling on Wednesday, 28 October 2020 sought to enforce an Appeals Committee decision which ordered the Tarkwa-based side to pay Asamoah 40% of his transfer fee to Raja Casablanca.

For failing to comply with the earlier decision on 2 August 2020, Medeama SC has also been fined GH¢ 3,000 to be paid on or before Friday, November 6, 2020.

Asamoah was transferred to the Moroccan side in 2015 for US$ 150,000 but terminated his contract after four months.

The striker in his response also rejected the decision of Medeama to pay US$ 20,000 from the transfer sum to intermediaries Nana Yaw Amponsah (LLM, Sports Law & Practice) of PHAR Partnerships (now Chief Executive of Asante Kotoko) and Emmanuel E. Mensah (Pinnacle Sports Management).

The Disciplinary Committee in their decision said: ”The Committee agrees with the player that only the 10% for the GFA should be deducted from the Transfer Fee since the Player was not a party to the Commission Agreement. The two parties to the Commission Agreement cannot and should not be allowed to make financial burden of player without his consent and concurrence. Given the choice, the player may object to the Intermediary or the fee and hence it is too late in the day to introduce the player to such a financial burden which was not argued before the Player’s Status Committee nor Appeals Committee.”

  • Name and shame big-wigs behind rosewood logging Participants

Participants at a forum on rosewood logging and charcoal burning have called on the public and institutions to name and shame the influential persons engaged in the practice.

They said the persons behind the logging of rosewood and the burning of charcoal on a commercial basis in the Savannah Ecological Zone were known people in society but were being shielded for fear of victimisation.

The participants noted that excessive logging and charcoal burning were eroding the benefits inherent in the woodlands.

They, however, observed that there were no deliberate attempts by stakeholders to halt the logging of rosewood and charcoal burning.

Mr Jeremiah Seidu, the Executive Director, Jaksally Development Organisation (JDO), noted that some authorities including traditional leaders and youth associations in the Savannah Region issued receipts and allow people to log trees and to burn charcoal.

The act, he said, was worrying and detrimental to the environment and livelihoods as it was gradually leading to desertification in the area.

Mr Seidu, therefore, appealed to traditional rulers and youth associations to desist from the act and support the fight against the menace.

“We have been on this campaign for the past ten years and we have realised that speaking to the hearts of the people makes them more responsive than speaking to their minds,” he explained.

He expressed the hope that the participants would replicate what had been discussed at the forum at their respective localities.

He said there was the need to start arresting and prosecuting people who engaged in illegal logging of rosewood and burning of charcoal on a commercial basis.

Mr Daryl Bosu, Deputy Director, A Rocha Ghana, said they would engage the youth groups and traditional authorities in the region to end the illegal activity.

“In the face of climate change and the way the weather is getting hotter, we need to have an action that is more resilient to secure existing reserves, so based on that we can build new livelihood around them,” Mr Bosu explained.

He said there was the need for strict implementation of the laws and regulation governing logging, saying “every chain saw that is used for cutting trees must be registered.”

“There is the need to be committed to all the laws and regulations on the land when it comes to felling and harvesting of trees and its trade, and charcoal production,” he explained.

Traditional rulers, representatives from the Ghana National Fire Service, Forestry Commission, faith-based Organisation, Assembly Members and environmental based Non-Governmental Organisations attended the forum.

The forum was on the theme: “Securing the Fragile Woodlands of the Savannah Region for Climate Resilience in relation to rosewood, charcoal production and climate change.”

The collaborative dialogue was organised by the Jaksally Development Organisation in partnership with A Rocha Ghana, SILDEP, CIKOD and NorthCode.

  • Voting begins in Tanzania general elections

Tanzanians began voting on Wednesday morning to elect their president and members of parliament. The outgoing head of state John Magufuli, nicknamed the “bulldozer”, faces main opponent Tundu Lissu, who has been able to reinvigorate the opposition, largely stifled during the last five-years.

On the semi-autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar, the situation had become clearly tense on Tuesday, with an opposition candidate – briefly arrested – and an accusation from his party that security forces had killed 10 people.

On Wednesday morning, in the Garagara neighborhood on the outskirts of Stone Town in Zanzibar, where police fired tear gas and live ammunition on Tuesday, 48-year-old Mnao says she came to the polling station early so as to get home quickly.

“During the skirmishes with the police, a tear gas grenade landed in my house. I screamed, I cried, I was distraught. My heart was beating very fast and I was praying,” she said.

More than 29 million voters are called to the polls from 07H00 to 16H00 (04H00 to 13H00 GMT) in mainland Tanzania and 556,000 on the semi-autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar, which together constitute the United Republic of Tanzania (about 58 million inhabitants).

In Zanzibar, voters not only vote in national elections (presidential, legislative), but also to appoint the president and parliamentarians of the archipelago.

Several AFP correspondents have confirmed the opening of polling stations in the country, notably in Dodoma, the administrative capital, in Arusha, the big city of the North, and Moshi, a city located near Arusha, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa.

“I thank God for giving me this opportunity to choose my leaders. We ask that the Electoral Commission is impartial so that peace reigns,” Nestor Shoo told AFP Nestor Shoo, who arrived at 6:00 am in front of the polling station of Mwenge elementary school in Moshi.

There have been reports of the restriction of internet access across the country with some users experiencing difficulties in sharing and downloading images on whatsapp and tweeting.

    Who are the candidates? –

Under Tanzania’s electoral rules, the winning candidate requires a simple majority to become president. Results are expected to be announced within one week.

Among the 15 candidates running for the presidential election, there is a duel between Mr. Magufuli, 60 years old, candidate for re-election under the green and yellow colors of the party CCM (“The Party of the Revolution”), in power since 1961, and Tundu Lissu, 52 years old, on behalf of Chadema (Party for Democracy and Progress).

During his first term in office, Magufuli, according to his critics, was authoritarian and adopted an abrupt style of governance, true to the nickname he earned as Minister of Public Works (2010-2015): the “bulldozer” or “Tingatinga” in Kiswahili.

Shortly after his election, his tolerance for any form of criticism seemed to collapse.

Political rallies outside the election period were banned, draconian laws against the media were passed, journalists, activists and opposition members were arrested.

    • Sixteen bullets in the skin –

Mr. Magufuli highlighted his fight against corruption, the extension of access to free education and a policy of major infrastructure projects in the hydroelectric and railway fields. He also resurrected the national airline.

Facing Mr. Magufuli stands Tundu Lissu, a lawyer by training, who returned to the country at the end of July after three years of exile.

In September 2017, after being arrested no less than six times during the year for various reasons, Mr. Lissu was the victim of an assassination attempt – which he claims was politically motivated – outside his home in Dodoma, the administrative capital.

He was shot 16 times. Twenty surgeries later, the 50-year-old limps, but still managed to campaign and attract crowds. So much so that in October, the leader of the popular opposition ACT-Wazalendo party, Zitto Kabwe, gave him his support, saying Lissu had “the best chance of beating Mr. Magufuli.

In return, Chadema sided for the Zanzibar archipelago presidency behind Seif Sharif Hamad, a veteran local opposition candidate running under the ACT-Wazalendo banner.

The election campaign was held without any consideration for the coronavirus, as Mr. Magufuli declared his country “free of Covid” in July, thanks to prayers.

The lack of opinion polls made it difficult to assess the popularity of the incumbent president and the public’s perception of his policies.

Under Magufuli, the economy continued to grow, before Covid-19, at an impressive 6% per year, but job creation was “few” and aggressive tax collection affected the private sector says Thabit Jacob, a Tanzanian political analyst based in Denmark.

The IMF expects Tanzania to escape recession this year, despite the pandemic. A growth of 1.9 percent is at least expected.

Celtel was subsequently acquired by the Zain Group which also sold all its African Assets to Bharti Airtel in 2010.

The Government of Ghana remained a shareholder in Airtel Ghana with a 25% holding through the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, until the AirtelTigo merger, and retained an option to acquire additional shares after the merger.

Westel was at the time of the takeover by Celtel, the second national operator in Ghana and was licensed to provide fixed and mobile (GSM) telecommunications services.

International envoys mediating in the violence following Guinea’s disputed election have urged the government to lift a blockade of the home of opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo.

Representatives from the United Nations, African Union and the 15-nation West African bloc ECOWAS said in a statement on Tuesday that “Guinean authorities (must) lift the barricade in the spirit of inclusive dialogue”.

Police have barricaded Diallo inside his house for days, as post-election clashes between his supporters and security forces flared last week.

President Alpha Conde, 82, won the October 18 election according to official preliminary results announced on Saturday, which would give him a controversial third term in office.

He pushed through a new constitution in March which allowed him to bypass a two-term limit for presidents. The move sparked mass protests, which were met with deadly crackdowns by security forces.

But Diallo disputes the results and claimed victory last week, citing data his activists gathered at individual polling stations.

His self-proclaimed victory led to unrest.

The government put the number of dead at 21, but the political opposition says 27 people died. AFP was unable to independently confirm the number of deaths.

The international envoys – who include ECOWAS Commission President Jean-Claude Kassi Brou and the UN special representative to West Africa, Mohamed Ibn Chambas – landed in Guinea on Sunday to mediate.

In a statement on Tuesday, the representatives said they had come to “lower sociopolitical tensions” after the election.

They urged Guinea to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The government of Ghana through this transaction, will temporarily operate the national asset in the best interest of the nation, and ensure the protection of the interests of all employees, customers and stakeholders, and a continuation of the digital transformation in Ghana, a statement issued on the move has said.

Given the multiplier impact the telecommunications sector has on the economy and various related industries, the Government of Ghana has entered into this agreement to ensure that thousands of Ghanaian jobs are safe guarded, the statement added.

It is of critical importance that the telecommunications sector remains healthy, dynamic, vibrant, and most importantly, competitive, the statement added.

The board of Bharti Airtel in a statement issued to the Bombay Stock Exchange on Tuesday evening [October 27, 2020] announced that the board has cleared the sale of its Ghana joint venture Airtel Tigo – to the Ghana government.

It is taking an impairment charge of about $25million for the transaction.

“The parties are in advance stages of discussions for conclusion of the commercial agreement for the transfer of AirtelTigo on a going concern basis to the government of Ghana,” Airtel said in the statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange in India.

The proposed deal would result in the government of Ghana acquiring 100% shares of Airtel Ghana Limited, also known as AirtelTigo, along with all its customers, assets and agreed liabilities.

“Accordingly, Airtel is voluntarily taking an impairment charge of Rs 1,841 million (Rs 184 crore),” the statement added.

AirtelTigo is a joint venture between ‘Airtel’ and ‘Millicom’ wherein Airtel holds a non-controlling 49.95% share in AirtelTigo.

Bharti Airtel in 2017 merged with Millicom’s Tigo in Ghana to become the country’s second largest mobile operator, AirtelTigo, with the approval of the National Communications Authority (NCA).

The government of Ghana remained a shareholder in Airtel Ghana with a 25 percent holding through the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, until the AirtelTigo merger, and retained an option to acquire additional shares after the merger.

Westel was at the time of the take over by Celtel, the second national operator in Ghana and was licensed to provide fixed and mobile (GSM) telecommunications services.

  • World 100m champion Coleman reportedly banned for two years

World 100m champion Christian Coleman has been banned for two years after missing three drugs tests.

The 24-year-old American, who is suspended from 14 May 2020, will miss the postponed Tokyo Olympics next year.

Coleman won 100m gold at the World Championships in Doha in 2019.

Representative Emanuel Hudson confirmed the indoor 60m world record holder will appeal against the Athletics Integrity Unit’s (AIU) ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

Hudson described the decision as “unfortunate”, adding: “Mr Coleman has nothing further to say until such time as the matter can be heard in the court of jurisdiction.”

Two-time world champion Coleman, who also won 4x100m relay gold in Doha, has 30 days to file an appeal.

He was provisionally suspended in June after missing a third test in December 2019.

Three whereabouts failures in a 12-month period can result in a ban of up to two years.

Coleman did not contest his first missed test on 16 January 2019 but disputed his filing failure on 26 April 2019 and whereabouts failure on 9 December.

The investigation into his rule violations said there was no suggestion he had ever taken a banned substance.

However, Coleman’s attitude towards his anti-doping obligations was described as “entirely careless, perhaps even reckless” by the AIU.

According to the AIU’s out-of-competition testing guidelines, athletes are accountable for missed tests if they are not at their specified location for the one-hour period they have stated. The tester must wait for the full 60 minutes before leaving.

Coleman said he was Christmas shopping “five minutes away” from home, and that the tester made no effort to contact him during his third whereabouts failure.

He also said on social media

that he would be “willing to take a drug test every single day for the rest of my career” to prove his innocence.

Doping control officers said they waited outside for a full hour, ringing and knocking every 10 minutes.

The AIU said shopping receipts belonging to Coleman suggested he was “obviously” not at his home for the entirety of the one-hour period.

Coleman said he returned home before the one-hour period ended at 8:15pm because he “recalled watching the kick-off of the Monday night football game”.

However, the AIU said receipts showed Coleman purchased items at 7:53pm and 8:22pm and that it was “simply impossible” for him to have returned home in between, while the officers took a photo of his residence at 8:21pm to show it was empty before leaving.

The US Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) initially charged Coleman with missing three drugs tests in 12 months, before his world 100m victory in September 2019.

It withdrew the case after it was proved there had been a filing irregularity regarding the date of the first missed test.

  • CAF Confederation Cup: Antwi’s Pyramids bow to Berkane in final

It was a disappointing day for Ghana striker John Antwi and his Egyptian club Pyramids as they succumbed to a 1-0 loss to Moroccan outfit RS Berkane in the 2020 Caf Confederation Cup final on Sunday.

Issoufou Dayo’s first-half effort in the single-legged fixture at the Prince Moulay Abdullah Stadium in Morocco was enough to hand The Orange Boys their first title in the competition.

Their final was originally scheduled for May this year but had to be rescheduled to October due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It was the redemption of sorts for Berkane, who lost in the final of the 2019 Confed Cup to Egyptian giants Zamalek. Their win also highlights Morocco’s dominance in the competition, the 2020 success becoming the fifth title won by a club from the north African country. No country has produced more winners than Morocco and Tunisia (also five).

For Pyramids, however, making the Confederation Cup final just six years after becoming an elite division club and two years after taking on their current identity from being formerly named Al Assiouty Sport will certainly remain a mark of pride despite Sunday’s defeat.

Berkane came into the final on the back of a 2-1 triumph over national rivals Hassania Agadir, while Pyramids accounted for Guinean side Horoya 2-0 in the semi-final to snatch a historic first-ever final berth.

In the end, Burkina Faso defender Dayo emerged the hero of the match as his scrappy 15th-minute goal decided the fixture.

Although there would be no more goals, there was certainly drama towards the end of the tie as Berkane’s Baker El Helali was sent off for a rough tackle after a video assistant review.

Ghana international Antwi was a second-half substitute in the game, coming on in the 66th minute for Ahmed Tawfik.

It was a big disappointment for the Ghanaian, who was hoping to build on his recent exploits of becoming the all-time foreign top scorer in the history of the Egyptian top league and earning a Ghana recall for the first time since 2017.

Inter Allies head coach, Tony Lokko has recounted how Thomas Partey saved his coaching career at Tema Youth Football Club.

Partey played for the Tema-based club before joining the Spanish La Liga side, Atletico Madrid in 2011.

Tony Lokko, who is currently the head coach of Ghana Premier League side, Inter Allies recounted that they needed to win a game to book their qualification to the Premier League.

However, they went to a goal down and the only player he knew could turn things around for him was the Arsenal midfielder.

In an interview with the Mail, he said: “It was a match to qualify for the Premiership.”

“We were a goal down. I called him from the bench. I said, “I believe in you. Go and change the face of the game.”

“He got the equalizer and made sure we won the game. He ran to me and I have never forgotten that” he added.

Partey joined Arsenal this summer and made his full Premier League debut in a defeat to Leicester City on Sunday.

  • Thomas Partey possesses the qualities of Patrick Vieira – Inter Allies coach Tony Lokko

Inter Allies head coach, Tony Lokko, is convinced that Thomas Partey will have a big impact on Arsenal, saying he is more skillful than club legend, Patrick Vieira.

Partey joined the Premier League giants from Atletico Madrid this summer on the transfer deadline day.

The 27-year-old has been on a fine form and made the headlines in their 2:1 win against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League in Austria.

Following the win last week, Arsenal legend, Martin Keown compared the Ghanaian to club legend, Patrick Vieira.

“This is where he looks like Patrick Vieira, travelling with the ball and making things happen,” lauded Arsenal legend, Martin Keown.

However, according to Lokko, Partey will have an impact on the club stressing that he has the qualities of Vieira but more skilful.

“I believe he is going to have a big impact,” Lokko told The Mail.

“I see him play like Vieira. But he is more skilful. Vieira was a ball-winner but, with Thomas, he is more offensive,” he added.

Partey made his full Premier League debut in their 1:0 defeat to Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
