Former President, John Dramani Mahama has expressed dismay at President Akufo-Addo governance, citing a worsened economy and broken promises.
As the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for 2024, Mahama believes Ghanaians were deceived by the Akufo-Addo-led NPP during the 2016 elections.
In an interview with the media, Mahama expressed sympathy for the country’s youth under the NPP government.
He recalls how the NPP focused their campaign on him and made numerous promises that remain unfulfilled for the citizens.
“I mean today, this is the highest unemployment in the history of Ghana. So it was just [about] say anything to win political power,” he stated.
“NPP came in with a lot of propaganda and they were prepared to promise heaven in order to win political power do a lot of the promises they made to Ghanaians were like just promise anything,” he averred.
“I mean I was watching a video of John Boadu saying oh! is it about jobs? If it’s about jobs, don’t worry. There’ll be so much [SIC] jobs that Ghanaians can do [and] we will have to go and bring foreigners to come and work to fill the rest of the vacancies,” he added.
One of the major concerns he highlights is the alarming rate of unemployment, which he claims is the highest in Ghana’s history.
Mahama accused the NPP of resorting to propaganda and making unrealistic promises to secure political power.
The recent World Bank report indicating that inflation pushed 850,000 Ghanaians into poverty supports Mahama’s assertions about the dire economic situation. He believes that President Akufo-Addo’s leadership has been a failure, and he urges Ghanaians to place hope in the NDC for a better future.
Confident in his chances in the 2024 polls, Mahama pledges to rebuild the country’s democracy and economy if elected.
As per the Petroleum Holding Fund report by the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Ghana recorded a total of $540 million in petroleum receipts during the first half of 2023.
This figure marks a decrease compared to the $731 million earned during the same period in 2022.
The report, in compliance with the petroleum revenue management act, Act 815, provides insights into Ghana’s crude oil liftings and allocation to the Ghana Petroleum Funds.
The semiannual report from the BoG revealed a shortfall of $191 million (about 26% less) in earnings during the first six months of 2023 compared to the same period last year.
The total petroleum revenue receipts include proceeds from oil liftings, Corporate Tax, Surface Rental, and interest on the Petroleum Fund account.
For the period ending June 30, 2023, oil liftings contributed $370 million, corporate tax accounted for $166 million, and surface rental amounted to $3 million.
In terms of distribution, the Ghana Stabilization Fund received $71 million, and the Ghana Heritage Fund received $30 million, totaling about $101 million during the same period.
As per the law, the Bank of Ghana is responsible for receiving and disbursing petroleum revenue for the country. Furthermore, the Annual Budget Funding Amount receives not more than 70 percent of the benchmark revenue, while not less than 30 percent is allocated to the Ghana Petroleum Funds.
From the transferable funds into the Petroleum Funds, the Ghana Heritage Fund receives not less than 30 percent, with the remaining amount transferred to the Ghana Stabilization Fund.
The Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, has raised concerns about the challenging financial situation the commission is facing due to the withdrawal of donor support and reduced government funding.
During the Public Accounts Committee sitting in Accra on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, he highlighted the dire impact this funding shortage is having on the commission’s operations.
Dr. Atuahene revealed that the commission is currently not receiving any funding from donors, which is severely undermining their ability to function effectively.
“Presently, we do not receive any funding from donors. This is severely undermining our operations, especially as government funding is also dwindling,” he noted.
Additionally, the level of government funding has also decreased, further exacerbating the situation.
To address this pressing challenge, the Ghana AIDS Commission is actively seeking alternative partnerships and initiatives to generate funds for carrying out its mandate.
Dr. Atuahene explained that they are analyzing the financial situation and working with partners to come up with a sustainability assessment and financial planning for the AIDS response.
Furthermore, the commission has taken various initiatives to engage the general public and seek their support in implementing the national AIDS response.
One such initiative is the USSD code *9898#, which has been introduced to allow the public to contribute and help bridge the significant financial gap faced by the commission.
Despite the funding constraints, the Ghana AIDS Commission remains committed to fulfilling its mandate and continuing its efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in the country.
“The Ghana AIDS Commission has a mandate to mobilize resources with support of the National HIV/AIDS Response as per the act that created the commission, Act 938. And so what we are doing currently is to analyze the financial situation and look at the sustainability of the AIDS response. We are working with our partners in coming up with a sustainability assessment and planning for the finances of the AIDS response.
“We have also worked on a number of initiatives to actually reach out to the general public to support the commission in implementing the national AIDS response. So we currently have the USSD code *9898# which we have put out for the general public to help the commission fill the huge financial gap,” he stated.
Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has voiced his disapproval of parliament’s decision to remove the death penalty from the constitution, fearing it might lead to an increase in mob justice.
During an interview with the media on July 26, Boahen expressed support for mob attacks, questioning the idea of imprisoning murderers for life while considering their punishment, which is death, as a human rights issue.
He argued that the rights of the victims who lost their lives should also be respected.
Boahen firmly stood by his position, declaring that he would eliminate the abolition and reinstate capital punishment if he were to become president.
“What happens to the right of the person who was killed, doesn’t he/she also have the same right?”
“We have created an atmosphere of fear and panic for ourselves because we pardon and pamper murderers on human right grounds. I’m telling you, if I, Obiri Boahen became the president, you’ll see what would happen in this country. Enough of that ugly noise! Ghanaians are sick and tired of the panic,” he added.
He criticized the current system for granting too much leniency to murderers under the guise of human rights, creating an atmosphere of fear and panic among the people.
The lawyer contended that life imprisonment alone does not effectively deter crime and cautioned against the potential dangerous consequences of abolishing the death penalty.
He further criticized past presidents for not implementing capital punishment in the name of preserving human rights credentials, believing that this approach disregards the rights of the victims who suffered due to heinous crimes.

Public Policy Analyst, Professor Enoch Opoku Antwi has voiced his skepticism
about claims suggesting that the large amount of Dollars found at the residence
of former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, was a donation from
funerals.
Prof. Antwi emphasized that such an assertion does not hold up logically and
credits Ghanaians with intelligence to see through such explanations.
He made these remarks when speaking to the media on Wednesday, July 26.
“So anybody saying that, I don’t know what he thinks about Ghanaians. That
is a big insult.”
The professor expressed concern about the situation, questioning the
morality of hoarding such wealth when there is widespread poverty in the
country.
Rather than condemning the act, some people were attempting to rationalize
it as a charitable gesture, which Prof. Antwi vehemently disagreed with. He
argued that no amount of funeral ceremonies could generate such a vast sum of
money.
“Whether private or public you cannot keep it at home,” he said on the Key
Points on TV3 Saturday, July 22.
Prof. Antwi in previous interviews highlighted that whether in a private or
public capacity, keeping such an exorbitant amount of money at home is
imprudent.
He expressed fears for the safety of the family members living in the same
household, as holding such wealth could put them at risk.
He stressed that legitimate funds should not be kept in such a manner and
called for investigations into the source of the money.
Following the public outcry and discussions surrounding the money found at
her residence, Cecilia Abena Dapaah tendered her resignation on Saturday, July
22.
“It is with considerable regret that I accept your resignation, and I
applaud your loyalty to the image and standing of the government,” he wrote on
Saturday.
“The work you undertook during your period in Government was excellent and
productive, and I thank you for your wholehearted contribution and devotion to
the progress of the Government and the nation.”
President Akufo-Addo accepted her resignation, acknowledging her past
contributions to the government as “excellent and productive.” Madam
Abena Dapaah assured her cooperation with state agencies in the investigation
process to address the matter.
On Monday, July 25, she was arrested by the Office of the Special Prosecutor
in connection with the money discovered at her house.
President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in her integrity while in office
and believed that she would be fully exonerated after the investigations
conclude.

Furthermore, Kennedy Agyapong shared that despite receiving insults, he chooses to ignore them and provided examples of his achievements. He mentioned plans to construct factories in Savannah to showcase his endeavors.
He also highlighted his significant contributions, such as building the largest cold store facility in Africa, amounting to thirty-one thousand tonnes, all accomplished without any loans or debts to banks.

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has lauded the positive outcomes of Ghana’s digital transformation, highlighting remarkable increases in annual revenues for key agencies.
Speaking at the National Development Conference themed “Moral Vision and National Development,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized that digitization has significantly curbed corruption.
He revealed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) saw a substantial surge in annual revenue, rising from 450 million cedis to an impressive 1.2 million cedis, after adopting digital practices.
Similarly, the passport office experienced a remarkable transformation, with its revenue escalating from 1 million cedis to an impressive 64 million cedis.
Dr. Bawumia attributed these success stories to the government’s digitization agenda, which has substantially improved efficiency and transparency within these agencies.
“In times past, it used to be easy to lie about your age and get away with it, particularly in the government sector. At the port, for instance, we have introduced the paperless system, and this came with resistance. Some of the custom officers organized demonstrations against the move, but we were firm on our stance. Today, at the offices of ECG, you can buy your credit without any challenges.”
“The challenges with ECG initially were that the revenues of ECG were constant and the values were the same. We looked at the architecture of revenue of ECG and we changed it. They were collecting 450 million cedis a month as revenue. We sent in a team to work on their system. There were sabotage attempts, such as people sending viruses into the system to destroy our work, but we were resilient and brought in a whole new architecture for ECG. Today, they make over 1 million cedis as revenues monthly. The same happened at the passport office, which was making 1 million cedis to over 65 million cedis,” he added.
He noted that the ECG’s revenue used to remain stagnant despite an increasing customer base, but with the digitization efforts, monthly revenues have soared significantly.
The passport office also witnessed a dramatic revenue boost due to the adoption of digital processes.
Dr. Bawumia mentioned that initially, there were challenges and resistance to the digitization efforts, but the government remained firm in its stance, leading to remarkable results.
“As Ghanaians, we have thrown away our values. Today, our cities are so dirty. When we were children and growing up, we used to wake up early in the morning and sweep our compounds. But today, that is not the case. Today, society is not concerned about how we make money and the manner in which we make them. Greed and theft have taken over our space, and people who are engaged in that are celebrated, yet society is not concerned.”
Former Presidents, John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama also addressed the conference, emphasizing the importance of preserving African values.
Former President Mahama expressed concerns about the erosion of traditional values and the adoption of foreign cultures, urging Ghanaians to uphold essential Ghanaian values in society.
Former President Kufuor emphasized the significance of morality in Ghanaian society and called for its integration into development pursuits, irrespective of backgrounds or ideologies.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo also stressed the need for justice to prevail in all aspects of Ghanaian life to ensure peaceful coexistence among diverse individuals.

Former rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei, has called on the government to abolish the public-school boarding system, stating that it contributes to children picking up social vices.
This call comes in response to a viral video showing a student from Adisadel College in Cape Coast assaulting a fellow student over a disagreement about a mobile phone sim. Both the perpetrator and the victim have been suspended by the school authorities.
Speaking t the media, Professor Adei expressed his belief that the boarding school system has lost its relevance in today’s context, especially with the implementation of Free Senior High School (SHS) education.
“I think that it was quite a useful means of training a few elites, what has happened over time is that, boarding school as the main vehicle of training children, when especially today we have free SHS, we have to scrap the boarding system in SHSs and make it local.”
“Once we have reached a certain level, boarding school as a public means of education is a no, no. I tell you at this moment that people in boarding schools are likely to pick more anti-social things including lesbianism, occultism than before,” Adei said.
He suggested that boarding schools should be transformed into local schools, as the previous model was only useful for training a few elites.
He went on to assert that boarding schools, as a public means of education, are no longer suitable. According to him, children in boarding schools are more likely to be influenced by anti-social behaviors such as lesbianism and occultism.
On the other hand, management consultant Kobina Atta-Badu disagreed with Professor Adei’s stance.
He argued that boarding schools play a crucial role in training children and promoting tribal cohesion.
At a young age, students from various regions of the country come together to live in one place, fostering bonds and friendships that transcend ethnic and tribal barriers.
Atta-Badu emphasized that the benefits of boarding schools extend beyond the individual level, contributing to national unity and social cohesion.
The debate highlights the different perspectives on the relevance and impact of the boarding school system in Ghana’s education landscape.
On Monday, July 24, a downpour in Walewale, located in the North East Region, resulted in the loss of approximately 1,452 birds on Mohammed Aziz’s poultry farm.
The poultry farmer, was visibly distressed and reportedly even collapsed after witnessing the tragic incident.
He expressed that he would require around GHC25,000 to rebuild his poultry business, which suffered significant losses due to the flood.
“There was a downpour, we came to the farm and realised that almost everything including the birds have been taken away.”
“We are just looking for means to revive the business because everything has been taken away,” he said.
The loss has had a severe impact on his poultry operations, and he urgently needs financial assistance to get his business back on track.
As a prominent supplier of guinea keets in the North East Region, Aziz emphasized the importance of his business and its role in the local community.
He revealed that his farm has 6,000 capacity incubators that normally hatch around 4,000 birds every month. Without swift intervention and support, the future of his business remains uncertain.
In light of the situation, Mohammed Aziz is making a heartfelt appeal to the government and compassionate individuals in Ghana to extend their assistance and help him revive his poultry business. He believes that without external support, his ability to recover from this calamity might be jeopardized, potentially leading to the end of his business.
This incident underscores the vulnerability of farmers to natural disasters and the need for prompt aid to ensure their livelihoods and the vital contributions they make to the local economy.
“I have 6,000 capacity incubators that hatch. So, every month, if I don’t hatch at all, I will be hatching about 4,000.
“Our appeal is that if the government doesn’t come in to help us, maybe that will be the end of our story. So, we are appealing to the government and well-meaning Ghanaians to help us to revive our business,” he added.

A jewel-encrusted ring worn by rapper Tupac Shakur just days before his tragic murder at the age of 25 will soon be up for auction, with a potential selling price of nearly $300,000 (£230,000).
The impressive sovereign ring, designed by Tupac himself, features gold, ruby, and diamond, and will be part of Sotheby’s auction commemorating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.
Tupac’s final public appearance took place three days before his untimely death, during which he showcased this remarkable piece of jewelry at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards. The ring symbolized a new chapter in his life, marking his transition from the “Thug Life” persona after his release from prison.
The medallion and the 14-carat gold crown ring were commissioned by Tupac following his time in prison when he established the media conglomerate Euphanasia Incorporated.
The crown ring is described by Tupac’s godmother, Yaasmyn Fula, who is selling the item, as a “powerful” symbol of responsibility, representing his commitment to expressing justice and love through his creativity.
In September 1996, shortly after attending a boxing match, Tupac was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas while riding as a passenger in a BMW driven by Marion “Suge” Knight.
The murder has remained surrounded by mystery and recently prompted police to conduct a search warrant in Henderson, Nevada, related to the ongoing investigation.
The auction of Tupac’s ring set a new record for the most valuable hip-hop artifact ever sold, exceeding the pre-sale estimate.
The design of the ring was influenced by Niccolo Machiavelli’s political manifesto “The Prince,” a book that Tupac read during his time in prison. The ring also bears the engravings “Pac & Dada 1996,” with “Dada” referring to his girlfriend, Kidada Jones.
The first-ever Africa Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC), aimed at tackling the repercussions of climate change on women and children, is scheduled to take place at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on August 2 and August 3.
Organized by the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP) in collaboration with the office of the President, the conference revolves around the theme “Amplifying the Voices of Women and Children in Climate Action.”
One of the key objectives of the event is to advocate for policies that safeguard the interests of women and children in climate change regulations and development. Additionally, the conference will explore practical projects and programs to address the adverse effects of climate change on women and children, while documenting indigenous knowledge and innovation related to climate change.
The conference is expected to attract participants from diverse backgrounds, including high-ranking government officials, policymakers, renowned experts, representatives from international organizations, civil society members, and grassroots community leaders.
As women and children are disproportionately affected by climate change, facing challenges to their livelihoods, health, and well-being, the conference aims to urgently address their unique vulnerabilities in climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
Notable figures, such as the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Amina J. Mohammed, and the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonja-Iweala, will be present at the event.
Upon the conference’s conclusion, a communique will be signed, representing a collective commitment to action. This document will guide governments, civil society, and the private sector in prioritizing the rights and well-being of women and children in climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
The outcomes and feedback from AFRIWOCC 2023 will be presented during the Africa Climate Week and Africa Climate Summit, slated for September 4 to September 6, 2023, in Nairobi, Kenya. These discussions will play a pivotal role in shaping Africa’s stance at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties’ twenty-eighth session (COP 28), taking place from November 30 to December 12, 2023, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
AFRIWOCC 2023 signifies a crucial moment in advocating for gender-responsive and people-centered climate policies in Africa.
By amplifying the voices of women and children and promoting inclusive and sustainable climate action, this conference has the potential to drive transformative change and build a more resilient future for all in the face of climate change challenges.
Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed immense delight as Ghana has abolished the death penalty law.
He called it a remarkable “feat” and urged the nation to celebrate this historic gesture.
On Tuesday, July 25, Parliament passed the Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill 2022, effectively eradicating the death penalty from Ghana’s laws.
The Bill empowers the President to commute death penalty sentences into life imprisonment.
While the death penalty had been present in Ghana’s Criminal Offences Code, no President in the Fourth Republic had ever signed an execution order, prompting calls from human rights advocates for its expunction.
With the passage of the Bill, offenders will no longer face the punishment of death.
Addressing the press in Parliament after the passage of the Bill, Mr. Afenyo Markin, also representing Efuttu as a lawmaker, stated, “For well over 50 years, we have had a death penalty in our statute books, and it has been a concern. I’m happy to say that we have, by this amendment of the parent act, been able to repeal that provision that deals with the death penalty. So simply put, the death penalty is no more a punishment in our statutes.”
He emphasized the value of human life, asserting that no person’s life should be taken simply because they committed an offense.
“I’m happy to say that we have by this amendment of the parent act been able to repeal that provision that deals with the death penalty. So simply put, the death penalty is no more a punishment in our statutes,” he stated.
He clarified that the abolition of the death penalty does not encourage those who take the lives of others, but rather upholds the sanctity of life, recognizing it as a gift from God that should not be taken away through state-sanctioned executions.
“What we are saying is that God gives us life and under no circumstances should a person’s life be taken merely because of the commissioning of such an offense.”
The Deputy Head of Corporate Affairs of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi, has explained that the temporary closure of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park was necessary to devise an electronic and digital ticketing strategy.
Speaking to the media, he stated that the park was open and free to all citizens to encourage domestic tourism as part of the “Experience Ghana, Share Ghana” initiative.
“When it was opened, it was opened for the general public. We are trying to promote domestic tourism. It’s called ‘Experience Ghana, Share Ghana’. Why would you open something and quickly close it? When it was opened, we gave 1 week, wanting Ghanaians to come there free of charge. So for about 5 days, anyone could pass through because we wanted Ghanaians to have a feel. They weren’t paying a dime when it was opened,” he stated.
However, due to a significant influx of visitors when it was opened, they decided to temporarily close the park to make necessary adjustments and improvements to handle the high number of tourists efficiently.
“Now the closure was for us to strategize on the ticketing. The ticketing is electronic; digital,” he said.
The park was recently redeveloped and commissioned on July 4, 2023, by President Akufo-Addo, but had to be temporarily closed on July 7 to fine-tune the ticketing system.
The Savannah Region Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jibril, has stated that the joint operation involving the military, the Regional Security Council and the Minerals Commission to eliminate illegal miners on the Black Volta is still in progress.
This update comes after receiving a recent report from the Six Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the Savannah Regional Security Council, and the Minerals Commission on Wednesday, July 26.
Recalling the media briefing held on Friday, July 21, by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, he reiterated the government’s strong commitment to combat the surge in illegal mining activities (galamsey) along the Black Volta River.
The efforts have already yielded positive results, with areas like Jama, Jugboi, and Bamboi in the Savannah Region successfully cleared of illegal miners.
The Minister further assured the public that the Ministerial Coordinating Committee on illegal mining remains resolute in stopping illegal mining activities along major rivers and water bodies. These areas have been designated as ‘Red Zones’ by the Government in its efforts to curb illegal mining.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Eastern Region has made a heartfelt plea to the residents, urging them to establish watchdog committees in their neighborhoods to protect transformers and other equipment from thefts.
The appeal comes in response to a notable increase in transformer thefts within the region, carried out by unidentified individuals.
Within a span of just one month, seven transformers have fallen victim to theft. One such incident involved a 50 kv transformer, installed for streetlights near Koforidua’s Oyoko Roundabout, which was taken away last Tuesday.
Additionally, thieves brought down a transformer at Pampaso No 1 in the Suhum district, opening the tank and making off with valuable copper wires.
On another occasion, an attempt was made on a transformer located at Oboma farms in Kade.
The Public Relations Officer of ECG in the Eastern Region, Emmanuel Halm, disclosed that the thieves recently cut off cables and disconnected panels of a transformer, plunging the entire community into darkness. Fortunately, they managed to escape when alert passersby raised an alarm.
The surge in transformer thefts has become a significant concern for ECG, with a total of four transformers brought down and attempts made to access their tanks during this period. Copper wires have been a common target for these thieves.
In light of these troubling incidents, ECG appeals to the general public for assistance in apprehending these culprits who continue to pose a threat to the electrical infrastructure.
The establishment of community watchdog committees can play a crucial role in protecting the vital equipment and ensuring the well-being of the entire region.
“We have been hit by a worrying trend which is a surge in transformer thefts. We have visited seven electricity-mounted transformers and four transformers have been brought down and the thieves attempted to open the tanks of the transformers, and they often steal the copper wires. Just this Monday, we were hit by another theft near the Kade District
“We are therefore appealing to the general public to help us to apprehend such culprits who come around our transformers.”
Former president, John Dramani Mahama has stated that if he had caused even a fraction of the problems he perceives the current government to have created, Ghanaians would have criticised him.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, 25 July 2023, he accused the ruling party of employing a deliberate propaganda strategy to mislead the public into believing that both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are alike and urged Ghanaians not to fall for this deception.
According to Mr. Mahama, the NPP has fostered a crisis of confidence in Ghana’s democracy, leading people to view politicians as dishonest and power-hungry.
He stated that he would have faced severe backlash and condemnation had he done even one-tenth of what the current government has done during their eight years in power.
“They [NPP] have created a crisis of confidence in the population in our democracy because now it’s easy for Ghanaians to think that politicians are liars; they’ll just lie for political power. If I did one-tenth of what they have done these last eight years, I’m sure that I would have been pilloried and crucified on a cross by now. There’s a bit of hypocrisy in it.”
“It’s NPP propaganda…they are in their mess, and they want to draw everybody else into the same mess,” the flagbearer of the NDC for the 2024 elections added.
“They [NPP] are happy to push that mantra and make it look like, ‘Oww, you’re better off staying with us because if the NDC comes, it will be the same.’ That is the psychology of the propaganda they are doing, It’s not the same.”
He attributed this perceived hypocrisy to NPP’s propaganda, which aims to implicate others in their own shortcomings.
The NDC’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections highlighted his party’s achievements, emphasizing that the NDC has a track record of delivering tangible benefits to Ghanaians.
He pointed out that the NDC has been instrumental in expanding electricity coverage in the country, citing the national and rural electrification programs initiated during Rawlings’ tenure.
He also noted the NDC’s contributions to the digital revolution, telecommunications development, and the provision of water, which significantly increased during his time in office.
Mr. Mahama further criticized the NPP for not establishing any public universities but rather renaming existing ones after their party figures.
He urged them to accept responsibility for their actions and refrain from trying to portray both parties as similar, as the NDC and NPP have distinct approaches and accomplishments.
In conclusion, former president Mahama defended his party’s record and called out the NPP for their alleged propaganda, urging them to focus on their own actions and leave the NDC to pursue their objectives separately.
“We started the digital revolution in this country. I was the Minister of Communication when we divided post and telecommunications and created Ghana Telecom and allowed Spacefon and all the mobile operators to come in. We started laying fibre optics in this country. We did the eastern corridor fibre optic.”
“We’ve given more Ghanaians water than any party in the history of this country. When Prof [John Evans Atta Mills] came into office, water coverage was 55 per cent; by the time I left office, water coverage was 72 per cent.”
“Seventy-two per cent of Ghanaians had access to good drinking water. We have built all the public universities in this country. NPP hasn’t built one public university. They are just good at renaming them with their party figures. And, so, somebody builds a university and you come and name it Dombo University, Tedam University, and so, don’t let them come to tell us we and they are the same. We are not the same. They should just wallow in their mess and leave us alone.”
Residents in Dunkwa-on-Offin, in the Upper Denkyira East District, has witnessed a tragic event where a 30-year-old man, identified as Samuel Mensah, has ended the life of his girlfriend, Gifty.
The horrifying act occurred amidst a heated argument between the couple, during which Gifty expressed her desire to terminate the relationship.
Both Samuel and Gifty hailed from Wassa in the Western Region and had been cohabiting in Dunkwa-on-Offin as partners for several years.
Regrettably, the altercation culminated in a fatal outcome when Samuel allegedly lured Gifty into an unfinished building and mercilessly attacked her with a cutlass, causing injuries that proved fatal.
The shocking scene was discovered by concerned residents, who acted swiftly to apprehend Samuel. He currently remains in Police custody, pending further investigation and legal procedures.
A witness who recounted the incident to the media stated that, “The tragic incident took place in an uncompleted building. I was at home when I noticed Samuel persuading his girlfriend to follow him there. Soon after, I heard cries of distress, prompting me to rush to the location, only to find the young woman lying in a pool of blood.”
“At first, I thought it was a botched robbery, but to my dismay, I later learned that it was the girlfriend’s own partner who committed the heinous act. I tried to apprehend him, but unfortunately, I couldn’t find anyone willing to assist. However, I explained the situation to other members of the community, who eventually took action and apprehended the suspect.”
This tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning, grappling with the loss of a young life and the brutality of the crime that took place among a couple who were known to live together.
A man in his 40s, believed to be working as a contractor on the Gushegu town roads, is currently in police custody in Yendi, following allegations of defiling a 14-year-old girl.
The suspect reportedly threatened the young girl, coercing her into silence by warning her of dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone.
In an interview with the media the victim’s father, Awuni Tia, revealed that after the incident, the girl’s health began to deteriorate.
“After they bailed him out about six months now, no one cares and we realised that this boy is going to cheat us because when we went to Tamale again after going through the report, first was tuberculosis second was HIV. But they put her on drugs and the stomach was the most complicated thing and they could not identify the problem,” he stated.
It was discovered later that she had contracted tuberculosis and HIV as a result of the traumatic experience.
The family was devastated by the news and sought medical attention, but the girl’s condition proved challenging to diagnose.
Despite reporting the incident to the police and the subsequent arrest of the suspect, he was later bailed out, which left the family feeling neglected and uncertain about the pursuit of justice.
The young girl’s health struggles persisted, and the family decided to take matters into their own hands, seeking the truth and accountability for the alleged crime.
The victim’s father stated, “So when we approached him, he also accepted that it was a mistake. We reported to the police station, and they arrested the boy and finally, they bailed him out.”
The incident has caused immense distress to the victim and her family, highlighting the urgency of addressing such cases and ensuring that justice is served. Authorities are now investigating the matter to ensure a fair and just resolution for the young girl.
“There was a day the girl was having a problem and we didn’t know what the problem was which was she was bleeding every day. So we got to find out that she is seriously sick so when we sent her to the hospital, they did a lot of tests and they could not find anything.”
“So we came home after a week and she got malaria again for two months. So from that we realised that she was defiled by a man called Alhassan Kambala. So when we approached him, he also accepted that it was a mistake. We reported to the police station and they arrested the boy and finally, they bailed him out,” Mr Tia indicated.
According to the provisional statistics for January to June, a total of 1,086 people tragically lost their lives in road accidents.
This number contrasts with the 1,300 fatalities recorded during the same period in 2022.
The report also highlighted a decline in injuries. In the reviewed period of 2023, 7,807 people were injured in road crashes, compared to 8,007 individuals injured during January to June 2022.
Pedestrian knockdown incidents were reduced to 1,205 in 2023, down from the 1,356 cases reported in 2022. Similarly, the number of vehicles involved in crashes decreased to 11,763 from 13,248 in the corresponding period.
The overall road traffic crash cases reported from January to June 2023 were 6,904, indicating a decrease when compared to the 7,687 cases reported during the same months in 2022.
While the data shows progress in some areas, road safety remains a critical concern, and efforts to further reduce accidents and casualties are still vital.
On August 1, 2023, the Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery, is expected to appear before the Parliament.
The summons comes in response to alleged police brutalities resulting in the death of a 32-year-old man, Yussif Salawudeen.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, made a statement on the Floor of Parliament urging the House to invite the Interior Minister.
“I am making a request to this House to invite the Interior Minister to update the House from the Police’s end on what truly happened and led to the death of this young man and to also request that we may have to independently investigate because it has been proven again and again that each time we leave it to the police, they don’t get to do anything.”
The purpose is to provide clarity on the incident that led to the youth attacking the Asawase police station on a recent Sunday.
“I am requesting this House to invite the Interior Minister to present the police’s perspective on what truly transpired, leading to the death of this young man. Additionally, I propose that we conduct an independent investigation, as it has been evident that relying solely on the police to investigate has yielded unsatisfactory results.”
Muntaka also appealed to his constituents, who were enraged by the tragic incident and consequently engaged in property vandalism, to remain calm and uphold peace.
“I urge the angry youth to remember that resorting to violence and property damage does not rectify the situation. Let us keep in mind that there are wrongdoers in every group, and taking the law into our own hands is not the solution.”
“I want to call on the irate youth that two wrongs do not make a right, and so we should all remember that there are bad nuts everywhere, and so we should not take the law into our own hands and vandalise properties,” he added.
The First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu, ruled that the Minister should brief the House on the incident on August 1, 2023, so that appropriate actions can be taken thereafter.
Metro TV journalist Paul Adom-Otchere, has slammed the Office Of President (OSP) for what he claims is a ‘funfair arrest and unnecessary search’ exhibited by the office meted out to the former Minister of Sanitation, Cecilia Dapaah.
According to him, the OSP’s modus operandi was far from ideal. He expressed dissatisfaction with the approach used by the OSP, suggesting that it could have been handled better or more effectively.
“ There is a reason why the CID department does not wear police uniforms. The reason is Because an individual is innocent until proven guilty, you don’t want to generate a stigma or a narrative that someone is guilty. So until the person has committed a culpable like an armed robber etc they go in plain clothes so that the individual is not stigmatized. If a special prosecutor goes to arrest in a dramatic fashion and it is live on TV.
“ You have to wait for the court to judge, the OSP cannot say that Cecila Dapaah has stolen the money.
“Old people don’t trust internet banking, the banking laws do not frown on keeping monies at home, the police do not cannot prosecute you for keeping money at home,” he added.
His comments come after the OSP searched the home of the former Minister, in respect of suspected corruption and corruption-related offences regarding large amounts of money and other valuable items reportedly stolen from her residence.
Mr Adom-Otchere also denied OSP’s discovery of additional money at Cecilia Abena Dapaah’s residence.
“We understand that it is untrue and the OSP must come out and clarify, we tried to search about this and what we have is that it is not true.
“We don’t know why TV3 has been carrying this story since midday. It has no source, neither the Special Prosecutor or his deputy. If TV3 has further and better particulars, they should publish it tomorrow or even tonight.
“Because our sources indicate that the Special Prosecutor has said it is not true,” he added.
On Friday, July 21, 2023 the home of the former minister was reported to have been robbed of US$1 million, €300,000 and other valuables by two of her domestic servants.
According to Madam Dapaah, the reported amounts of money stolen in the media is inconsistent with the original complaint she filed.
She stepped down from her position owing to pressure from National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament 48 hours after it was revealed that she had lost millions of dollars and cedis in her home.
According to Madam Cecilia Dapaah, her decision is to prevent the matter from becoming a preoccupation of government and a hindrance to the work of government at such a crucial time.
“Whereas I can state emphatically that those figures do not represent correctly what my husband and I reported to the Police, I am very much aware of the import of such stories around someone in my position.”
She also assured of her willingness to cooperate fully with all state agencies to enable them fully establish the facts.
“I have no doubt whatsoever that at the end of the process, it will be fully established that I have conducted myself with integrity during my period in public service and I will be fully exonerated from all the allegations that have filled the public domain in the past 24 hours,” she added.
Former coach of Asante Kotoko, Bashir Hayford, has shared a valuable advice with Medeama and Dreams FC as they prepare for their upcoming CAF inter-club competitions.
After their successful performances in domestic competitions, Medeama SC and Dreams FC are set to represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup, respectively.
In an interview with the media he emphasized the importance of managing expectations for both clubs.
He points out that previous Ghanaian representatives’ results in Africa should serve as a wake-up call for Medeama SC and Dreams FC.
Hayford urges the clubs to put proper measures in place and prepare thoroughly. He suggests strengthening their squads and scouting players from Africa to enhance their performance, similar to other African clubs.
The experienced coach advises them to lower their expectations and focus on building quality from the start.
By recognizing their opponents’ qualities and working diligently, they can make a strong impact in the competition.
“The results of the clubs who previously represented Ghana should be a wake-up call to Medeama SC and Dreams FC. This should even be an advise to them,” Coach Bashiru Hayford told Mothers FM.
“Our clubs perform poorly in Africa. Some were even eliminated from the preliminary round (just after two games).
“They should put things in place and prepare well. It will be good for them to beef up their squad. If they want to perform well then they should start scouting players in Africa like other African clubs,” he divulged.
“They should lower their expectations because their opponents are having the qualities. How do we build the quality? We build quality from the start. They should lower their expectations for the competition,” he concluded.
Medeama SC’s Captain, Kwasi Donsu, has expressed confidence ahead of their clash against Remo Stars FC in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.
The Ghanaian club is set to compete against the Nigerian outfit in the qualifiers for the group stage of the prestigious CAF inter-club competition.
In an interview with the media, the experienced midfielder emphasized that their team, the Yellow and Mauve outfit, does not fear their opponents. He assured fans that Medeama SC will put in the hard work and preparation needed for the two-legged encounter.
Kwasi Donsu stated, “In Football, if you want to be a champion, you don’t have to fear your opponents. The most important thing is that we are going to work hard and sail through to the next stage.”
Medeama SC earned their spot in the competition as Champions of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season.
Their goal is to progress to the Group stage of the upcoming CAF Champions League season, and they are determined to give their best efforts to achieve it.

She responded “Oh yes as for me the gospel music work I nearly thought of quitting so that I can go on retirement as for that one it’s very true.

He recounted, “I remember going to Fela’s house in Nigeria with my friend Sunny, who managed me. Sunny was a very good friend of Fela, and during our visit to Nigeria, we went to Fela’s club. The next day, he took me to his house, and that’s when I came across this weed, which they call Fela goro.”
“Fela saw me, and he took one joint and handed me one too. My manager encouraged me to give it a try, but I was hesitant as I feared the effects. Nevertheless, I wanted to impress Fela, so I decided to smoke. However, the moment I took a puff, I felt extremely dizzy and disoriented. It was quite overwhelming, and I felt like I was almost going mad,” Pat Thomas revealed.

Renowned technology expert and Paramount Chief, Torgbuiga Akpo Ashiakpor VI, from Weta Traditional Area in the Volta Region, has issued an urgent call to action for government to promptly digitize the country’s esteemed Chieftaincy institutions.
The aim is to prevent potential crises and promote sustainable governance within traditional leadership.
Recognizing the challenges faced by Chieftaincy Institutions, Torgbuiga Akpo Ashiakpor VI stressed the immediate need for action.
Embracing digital advancements can empower Ghana to overcome these obstacles and ensure a harmonious future for traditional leadership.
“However, by digitizing the Chieftaincy Institution, we can preserve these invaluable legacies for future generations, safeguarding their heritage from those who seek to exploit it. Through the implementation of digital systems, comprehensive records can be created and maintained, ensuring the accurate documentation of lineage, land ownership, and cultural practices. This will serve as an invaluable resource, empowering communities to protect their identity and resist any attempts at illegitimate kingdom capture,” he added.
Digital transformation holds significant potential to revolutionize Chieftaincy Institutions, introducing efficiency, transparency, and accountability. By utilizing modern digital tools, these institutions can streamline administrative processes, enabling well-informed decisions by leaders and governing bodies.
One critical aspect is differentiating traditional land boundaries from administrative boundaries, which has left certain areas vulnerable to exploitation.
Digitization can preserve valuable legacies, safeguarding heritage from those seeking to manipulate it. Comprehensive records of lineage, land ownership, and cultural practices will empower communities to protect their identity.
“The digitalization process entails the creation of comprehensive digital infrastructure, including advanced data management systems, secure online portals, and accessible archives. These technological advancements will facilitate accurate record-keeping, ensuring a wealth of information is readily available at the fingertips of stakeholders, from traditional leaders to government authorities and the public.

Let us unite in this noble endeavor, leveraging the power of digital transformation to secure our collective heritage, promote unity, and preserve the essence of Ghana’s diverse traditional areas for generations to come,” he concluded.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has initiated measures to limit tricycle operations within the central business district (CBD) of Kumasi.
This action is aimed at tackling congestion issues in the city.
Despite strong opposition from tricycle riders, Randy Wilson, head of the KMA’s transport department, remains steadfast in enforcing the directive.
The KMA’s plan to reorganize transport services within the city has been a priority in recent months.
Engagements with tricycle operators were conducted, highlighting that using tricycles for commercial purposes is considered illegal based on traffic regulations 2180.
The KMA emphasizes the need to curb certain activities to combat increasing congestion.
Originally scheduled for June 15, 2023, the implementation of the directive has been postponed to an unspecified later date due to ongoing sensitization efforts.
The KMA’s Public Relations Officer, Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, clarifies that the directive is a restriction, not a complete ban, on tricycle movement within the CBD.
To enforce the directive, the KMA’s transport department and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) will be present at various checkpoints.
Tricycles found violating the restriction will face impoundment and fines at the Central Police Station or the assembly’s towing site.
Drivers at the Kumasi-Bawku bus terminal have recommenced their services following a temporary suspension of loading.
The suspension was in protest against an assault on one of the buses owned by the terminal at Walewale in the North East Region, which occurred last Friday.
The Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces provide escorts for buses heading to Bawku and other North destinations to ensure safety.
Drivers expressed concern about the threats to their livelihood and fear when transporting passengers in the North.
The terminal’s leadership appreciates the security agencies’ intervention but calls for more effective measures to protect lives.
Spokesperson Anasara George Akolgo appeals for stronger police escorts on the route from Savelugu to Bolga to enhance safety.
The attack in Walewale resulted in one death and several injuries, prompting the GPS to launch a manhunt for the perpetrators.
Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu, has appealed to President Akufo-Addo to commute all death row inmates’ sentences to life imprisonment.
This move would align with Ghana’s commitment to the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2022, which removes the death penalty from the country’s laws.
On Tuesday, July 25, Parliament passed the bill, technically eliminating the death penalty from Ghana’s legal system. Under the new law, the President will have the authority to change death sentences to life imprisonment.
In the past, the death penalty was part of Ghana’s Criminal Offences Code but had not been implemented during the Fourth Republic.
Human rights advocates have long called for the abolition of the death penalty, and the passage of the bill marks significant progress in this regard.
Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed satisfaction with the repeal, urging the nation to celebrate this important step.
MP Francis Xavier Sosu, who actively supported the bill, emphasized the importance of President Akufo-Addo’s assent to the legislation and further appealed for the commuting of all current death row inmates to life sentences.
He believes this action will demonstrate a genuine commitment to moving away from state-sanctioned killing and towards a pro-life approach, while still denouncing acts of violence.

The Deputy Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has provided more details on the ongoing saga concerning the former Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah.
Speaking to the media, Basintale highlighted the overwhelming scale of the reported stolen wealth.
He emphasized that an average worker in Ghana earning GH¢3,000 would need to work for a century to accumulate the reported $1 million supposedly stolen by the former minister.
He further illustrated the magnitude of the stolen funds, stating that even an ordinary lecturer earning GH¢10,000 would have to work for 100 years to amass the stolen dollars and euros.
For a nurse, it would take 333 years of work to reach the $1 million that was found in Cecilia Dapaah’s house. Basintale aimed to provide a perspective on the vast sums involved in the case.
Basintale expressed surprise at some government communicators downplaying the severity of the reported theft.
He pointed out that the charge sheet filed by the victim clearly showed that substantial amounts of money had been stolen, and attempts to minimize the matter were unwarranted.
The former Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, has been at the center of public attention in relation to this saga.
She was invited and subsequently arrested by the Office of the Special Prosecutor on July 24, 2023, after it was reported that her maids had stolen $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghana cedis from her. She was later granted bail with a surety.

An old video featuring presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has surfaced, where he is seen showering praises on the brilliance of Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Kennedy Agyapong, who is vying for the NPP flagbearer position along with nine other aspirants for the upcoming elections, had predominantly centered his campaign on criticizing the Vice President.
However, last week, after indirectly criticizing Dr. Bawumia for the recent depreciation of the Cedi, an old video resurfaced, displaying Kennedy Agyapong absolving Dr. Bawumia of blame.
As the Assin North MP intensifies his campaign, another throwback video has emerged, where he lauds the performance of Vice Presidents in the 4th Republic.
In the video, Kennedy Agyapong discusses the effectiveness of Vice Presidents under various regimes and highlights Dr. Bawumia’s exceptional brilliance and capabilities.
He attributes this effectiveness to both Dr. Bawumia’s natural abilities and the leadership style of President Akufo-Addo, which has allowed him to shine.
“I want Ghanaians to understand that it is not every President that allows their Vice Presidents to shine. It is Akufo-Addo’s style of government managing the country that has allowed the Vice President,” said Kennedy Agyepong in 2021.
He added: “But Dr Bawumia himself is naturally good. If he was like Mahama, he would have been ineffective.”
In the 2021 video, Kennedy Agyapong emphasizes that not all Presidents give their Vice Presidents the opportunity to excel, but President Akufo-Addo’s management style has allowed Dr. Bawumia to showcase his brilliance.
He further contrasts Dr. Bawumia’s competence with that of former Vice President Mahama, suggesting that the latter might have been less effective in a similar role.
These videos showcasing Kennedy Agyapong praising Vice President Bawumia and acknowledging his competence stand in stark contrast to his recent campaign messages, which have been critical of the Vice President.
