Don’t neglect your NDC roots – Asiedu Nketiah to Central Region residents

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has expressed strong criticism towards residents of the Central Region for their lack of support for the party in elections.

In a TikTok video, Asiedu Nketiah, speaking to a crowd at an NDC event in the Central Region, voiced his frustration over the region’s failure to reward the party with substantial votes, despite the party’s history of selecting flagbearers and running mates from the region.

Addressing the crowd, Asiedu Nketiah stated,”Today, I have come to look directly into the faces of you, residents of the Central Region, and speak the truth. What I want you people to know is that you are royals in the NDC, but you are behaving like people who don’t value their worth. This party was founded by celebrated personalities from the Central Region, including Kwamena Ahwoi, Kwesi Botchwey, Ato Ahwoi, and others.

He highlighted the party’s historical choices, saying, “In our first election, we chose someone (K.N. Arkaah) from the Central Region as our running mate. In our second election, we selected Prof. Mills as our running mate, and in our third election, Prof. Mills became our flagbearer. In our fourth and fifth elections, Prof. Mills was our flagbearer. He won and became President.

When he died, John Mahama took over and selected someone (P.K. Amissah-Arthur) from the Central Region to be Vice President. After Amissah-Arthur, today, we have Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang from the Central Region as our running mate and soon-to-be Vice President,” said the former Deputy Minister for Agriculture during the Rawlings regime.

He continued, “So, you have a lot of valuable assets, but you are discarding them. Why are you throwing out your intestines and replacing them with rubbish? There are regions in Ghana where the flagbearer of a party comes from, and ever since, the people of those regions have consistently voted for that party. But you, the people of the Central Region, who helped form the NDC, in all eight elections held in this Fourth Republic, there has not been one in which a person from the Central Region wasn’t a flagbearer or running mate. Yet, during elections, you vote against the NDC. Think about this carefully. If you don’t make it to Heaven, don’t blame Jesus.”

Polling station results will be published on our website – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has pledged to enhance transparency by publishing the polling station results from the December 7th elections on its official website.

This was confirmed by Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, the Deputy Chairman for Corporate Services, during an appearance on Joy News’ The Probe on Sunday evening.

Responding to a recommendation from Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, who urged the EC to release polling station results as a trust-building measure, Dr. Asare stated that the Commission had already considered the proposal. He assured the public that the results would be made available online, allowing candidates seeking to challenge the outcomes to access the necessary data for legal purposes.

This commitment comes after various civil society organizations (CSOs) called on the EC to publish polling station results to ensure transparency.

Last month, Dr. Kwesi Jonah of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) and Rev. Dr. Fred Deegbe of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) advocated for a system that would electronically transmit results from polling stations directly to the EC’s website in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Dr. Asare reaffirmed on Sunday that the EC will post the results once they are received from all polling stations. As noted by Dr. Ibn Chambas, this decision is expected to be welcomed by the Diplomatic Community, CSOs, political parties, and the general public.

This step, as suggested by Dr. Ibn Chambas, is seen as a vital move to bolster trust in the EC, demonstrating that the Commission is committed to a transparent, fair, and open electoral process for the 2024 elections.

  • Upcoming protest is about electoral issues, not personal matters – Mahama to EC

Upcoming protest is about electoral issues, not personal matters – Mahama to EC

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has defended the party’s decision to protest against the Electoral Commission (EC), citing concerns about the voters’ register.

The NDC has voiced apprehensions regarding potential discrepancies in the register, warning that inaccuracies could jeopardize the credibility of the upcoming December 7 elections.

Speaking during a community engagement as part of the second phase of his Greater Accra regional tour, Mahama urged Ghanaians to back the NDC’s push for a credible and transparent voters’ register, emphasizing that this would ensure a fair electoral process.

Mahama clarified the party’s stance, saying, “And I just want to make a point that our issues with the Electoral Commission are not because we don’t like the commissioners or the EC. Our issue with the Electoral Commission is that we want peace during and after the election.

“So when we raise issues about the electoral process, it is because we want the EC to sit up and do its job so that all of us can have confidence in the electoral process.

He further elaborated, “And the only way we can get the EC to do its job is to pressure the EC to do it. And that is why on the 17th of this month, that is next Tuesday, we are doing a demonstration at the EC office. And that demonstration is not only NDC, it is all Ghanaians who are willing to join the demonstration so that we go and tell EC to sit up and do its work properly so that we have a peaceful election. That’s the purpose of that demonstration.”

Mahama also announced an upcoming demonstration, saying, “On the 17th of this month, next Tuesday, we will demonstrate at the EC office.

This protest isn’t just for the NDC—it’s for all Ghanaians who want to join. Our aim is to demand that the EC steps up and does its job properly, ensuring a peaceful election. That’s the sole purpose of the demonstration.”

  • Show us the 12,000km roads you have constructed – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Show us the 12,000km roads you have constructed – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

The flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has cast doubt on the claim by the Akufo-Addo administration that over 12,000 kilometers of roads have been built across Ghana.

Mahama has expressed skepticism about the accuracy of this figure, highlighting a lack of visible evidence to support the government’s assertion.

Speaking at a campaign event in Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfrom, he promised that an NDC government would undertake an audit to confirm the legitimacy of these road construction projects.

Mahama also criticized the state of Ghana’s road infrastructure, arguing that it does not match the government’s claims. He humorously speculated that these roads might only be present in President Akufo-Addo’s hometown of Kyebi.

“Everywhere I go, every traditional ruler who has spoken has complained about the poor road network. And I am saying that the NPP says that in the eight years of [John Agyekum] Kufuor, he did 3000 and something kilometers of roads. In NDC, they say we did 4,700 kilometers of roads. And they alone have done 12,000 kilometers of roads.

“And the question I am asking is, where are those roads? Because everywhere I go, the main complaint is about the road network. So I don’t know [where the roads are].

“Well, I have not been to Abuakwa and Kyebi, where the president comes from. But I hear the roads [there] are very good so maybe that is where the 12,000 kilometers of roads are.

“And so when we come, the new roads they said they have done, I will audit them to find out where the money that has been paid for 12,000 kilometers of roads has gone because we can’t find those roads.”

  • Ghana named tier 1 cybersecurity leader on global stage

Ghana named tier 1 cybersecurity leader on global stage

Ghana has been awarded Tier 1 status in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), positioning the country as a global leader in cybersecurity.

The GCI ranks countries based on a five-tier system that assesses their cybersecurity frameworks, with Tier 1 being the highest level of recognition. Ghana’s placement in this category, known as the “Role Modelling” tier, underscores its advanced cybersecurity measures, serving as a benchmark for other nations.

This prestigious ranking highlights the robustness of Ghana’s cybersecurity infrastructure, which is vital in safeguarding its growing digital ecosystem. With a remarkable score of 99.27%, Ghana is the second-highest ranked country in Africa, after Mauritius, and is among only five African nations that have reached Tier 1. Globally, Ghana is part of a select group of 46 countries in this top category.

The GCI evaluates countries across five key pillars: Legal Measures, Technical Measures, Organisational Measures, Capacity Building, and Cooperation.

Ghana’s score indicates a marked improvement from the 2020 rankings, where the country was rated 86.69% and placed third in Africa, trailing behind Mauritius and Tanzania.

Ghana’s achievement in the GCI reflects significant advancements in several critical areas. The Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038), remains a key driver of this success.

As a pioneering piece of legislation for the Global South, this law establishes protocols for the licensing and accreditation of cybersecurity service providers, making Ghana only the second country globally to implement such standards.

Furthermore, Ghana’s efforts to protect its Critical Information Infrastructures (CIIs) have been instrumental, with the Cybersecurity Authority (CSA) overseeing the development of a comprehensive risk management framework and coordinating crisis management for government digital initiatives.

Institutional collaboration has also been a major factor, with the Joint Cybersecurity Committee (JCC) exemplifying effective coordination between the public and private sectors. The upcoming launch of the Industry Forum, as stipulated under section 81 of Act 1038, is expected to further enhance these efforts.

Additionally, Ghana’s revision of its National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy provides clear guidance for continued growth in the field.

The country has also demonstrated a commitment to cybersecurity awareness through initiatives such as the annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month, which, alongside capacity-building programs for law enforcement, the public sector, and academia, reflects Ghana’s dedication to enhancing cybersecurity skills.

The development of a robust Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) ecosystem has been equally critical, promoting better incident response and national coordination.

Public engagement in cybersecurity has been strengthened by the deployment of cybercrime reporting mechanisms, including dedicated points of contact and monthly public alerts.

Internationally, Ghana has earned recognition as a hub for training and capacity-building, particularly in partnership with organizations such as the European Union, Council of Europe (COE), the World Bank, and ECOWAS.

Ghana’s commitment to international cooperation is further highlighted by its ratification of the Second Additional Protocol to the Budapest Convention and its contributions to the adoption of the recent UN Convention on Cybercrimes.

The protection of children online has also been a priority for Ghana, evidenced by the review of its Child Online Protection framework and the establishment of the National Cybersecurity Challenge, aimed at promoting online safety for young internet users.

Ghana’s Tier 1 status in the GCI reflects the country’s unwavering commitment to securing its cyberspace and maintaining a resilient digital infrastructure.

This achievement is the result of collective efforts led by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, the Joint Cybersecurity Committee (JCC), and other key stakeholders in both the public and private sectors.

While Ghana’s leadership in global cybersecurity is commendable, the country recognizes the need for continued progress, particularly in the area of capacity development. Despite excelling in four out of five pillars, Ghana’s capacity-building score highlights the need for increased investment to sustain and enhance its cybersecurity capabilities.

In comparison, major sub-Saharan countries such as Nigeria and Cameroon are still classified in Tier 3, indicating that they are in the process of establishing key cybersecurity initiatives. Ghana’s leadership in the region underscores the importance of continued efforts to expand its capacity and maintain its position as a global role model in cybersecurity.

GNFS to blacklist areas that have recorded violence against its officers

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has vowed to withdraw its services from areas that have been and continue to be hostile towards its personnel.

In a media engagement on Saturday, September 14, the Service highlighted that some individuals have developed a troubling habit of attacking firefighters who arrive late at fire scenes, which it described as unacceptable.

GNFS stated that firefighters risk their lives to save others and protect property, yet they often face a lack of respect from the Ghanaian public.

The Service has reminded the public that assaulting firefighters is illegal and will result in severe legal consequences.

The GNFS has also warned that it will vigorously defend its personnel and ensure that anyone who attacks firefighters will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The Service identified several factors contributing to delays in responding to fire incidents. He mentioned outdated and malfunctioning equipment as significant obstacles impeding the firefighters’ ability to perform their duties effectively.

GNFS also noted that discussions between the Service and the government are ongoing to address these challenges.

“Anyone who attacks our personnel will be dealt with. If you don’t understand our services there are channels of reporting. Report to the respective authorities. We have regional commanders, the district fire officers, chief officers and others. You have no right to hit an officer, we will deal with you all. If these assaults will not stop we want to go to places that are not friendly to our people because there are a lot of risks associated with our work”.

Additionally, the Service disclosed that efforts are underway to equip Ghana with state-of-the-art fire and rescue equipment.

Recently, the Service reported that an attack on its personnel resulted in one firefighter being seriously injured and another traumatized.

The officer who sustained severe injuries, Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO) Abdul Aziz Annor, was assaulted by a driver and his companion while refilling the fire truck at La Palm T-junction in Accra on Tuesday, September 10. ADO Annor suffered a fractured ankle and is currently being treated at the 37 Military Hospital.

Another incident occurred on Thursday, September 5, at the Dansoman roundabout, where firefighters from the Dansoman Fire Station were both verbally and physically attacked by local residents while responding to a fire.

Meanwhile, the attackers have been apprehended and, as of September 9, were granted bail with two sureties each, amounting to GH¢5,000.

Under the three-year programme, Ghana has accessed $1.6 billion of the allocated $3 billion, including a recent $360 million tranche received in July 2024.

The IMF has observed that the government’s extensive reform efforts and strong policy measures, supported by the Bank of Ghana, are producing encouraging results. Growth in 2023 surpassed initial projections, inflation is on the decline, and international reserves are on the rise.

  • We are with you – World Bank to communities hit by drought

We are with you – World Bank to communities hit by drought

The World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, Robert Taliercio O’Brien, has urged farmers affected by this year’s drought in northern Ghana to remain steadfast.

His remarks came during a tour of the Upper East Region, where he visited project sites under the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP).

This initiative, funded by the World Bank, aims to strengthen food system resilience in Ghana and across the sub-region amid climate-induced agricultural challenges.

Speaking to farmers and media representatives, Mr. O’Brien acknowledged the severe impact of the drought but expressed admiration for the determination and resilience of the farmers he met.

“I have come to deliver one message only, and that is, the World Bank stands with you in these trying times and we are committed to continuing supporting Ghana and the sub-region to build and promote robust value chain systems to ensure that we emerge steadfast and even stronger during and after unforeseen, unavoidable tests of nature”.

Mr. O’Brien expressed his satisfaction that communities benefiting from World Bank-funded irrigation systems remained largely unaffected by the recent drought. These irrigation systems facilitated dry-season farming, crucial for sustaining agricultural productivity during challenging conditions.

During his visit, Mr. O’Brien, accompanied by teams from the World Bank Ghana and the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP), inspected various components of the Tono Irrigation Scheme.

This scheme had undergone significant rehabilitation funded by the World Bank and the Government of Ghana under the Ghana Commercial Agriculture Project (GCAP). His inspection included the dam wall, reservoir, and spillway, as well as the automation system at the intake structure, which controls water flow into the main irrigation canal.

Additionally, Mr. O’Brien reviewed the solar facility in Zone B, which includes solar panels and pumps used to deliver water to higher farmlands. He also toured Zone A, interacting with farmers and observing their fields. A stop at the bifurcator, where the main canal splits into the Left Bank Canal (LBC) and Right Bank Canal (RBC), allowed him to engage with farmers along the LBC and visit lateral F14 in Zone C.

The World Bank and the Government of Ghana have made substantial investments through GCAP to rehabilitate and expand key irrigation schemes, including the Kpong Irrigation Scheme (KIS), Kpong Left Bank Irrigation Scheme (KLBIS), Tono Irrigation Scheme (TIS), and Vea Irrigation Scheme (VIS). Looking ahead, the FSRP will build on these accomplishments by completing work on the Vea Irrigation Scheme and continuing improvements on the Tono Irrigation Scheme.

Through FSRP, support for intensifying production has been provided to farmers via input credit, further enhancing the resilience and efficiency of these vital irrigation systems.

“Under a Norwegian grant, farmers at Tono will be supported with input to cultivate 50 hectares of tomato using the solar-powered pumps in Zones B & O

“FSRP is further activating on-farm demonstrations to promote proven CSA (climate-smart agric) technologies in tomatoes and set up adaptive trials to evaluate the suitability of locally released tomato seeds.

Logistical support is also being provided to facilitate the implementation of the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP) activities by Agriculture Extension Agents, enhancing their ability to carry out these initiatives on the ground.

World Bank Director, Mr. O’Brien, reassured farmers that the Bank’s involvement goes beyond mere funding. He emphasized their commitment to being actively engaged with farmers throughout the process, stating, “We shall be with you on the ground, every step of the way; and we shall not relent until our full objective of credible food security has been met.”

Ms. Ashwini Sebastian, Senior Agricultural Economist at World Bank Ghana and Task Team Leader for FSRP, highlighted that irrigation is just one component of the agricultural value chain.

She stressed the importance of integrating other interventions, such as adopting innovative farming methods, using climate-smart seeds, and implementing value-addition strategies, to achieve the desired quality and yield improvements in food production.

The Project Coordinator for FSRP, Mr. Osei Owusu-Agyeman, announced plans for a new national irrigation policy designed to address the challenges posed by climate variability. This policy aims to redefine irrigation practices in the country.

FSRP is a regional initiative aimed at bolstering food security by supporting key value chain activities, enhancing resilience of agri-food systems, and harmonizing agricultural markets across West Africa. Participating countries include Ghana, Togo, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Chad, Sierra Leone, and Senegal.

In Ghana, FSRP, implemented by the Ministry of Food & Agriculture (MOFA), focuses on intensifying the production, marketing, and consumption of essential crops and livestock, including rice, maize, broiler poultry, soybeans, and tomatoes.

COCOBOD financially stable to buy cocoa beans – Minister

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has dismissed claims that the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) lacks the financial capacity to buy cocoa beans from farmers.

He firmly rejected the notion, stating that it is a misconception.

Speaking at a press conference, the minister emphasized that COCOBOD remains financially capable of making cocoa purchases.

His remarks came as he announced the new producer price for cocoa for the 2024/2025 season.

The price has been raised from GH¢20,928 per tonne at the start of the 2023/2024 season to GH¢48,000 per tonne, or from GH¢1,308 per 64kg bag to GH¢3,000 per 64kg bag.

The minister in his submission said “I am not too sure why you will say COCOBOD has no money. It is a wrong impression. It should never be put out there. COCOBOD is well positioned to buy cocoa beans from farmers and trade same.”

“Nowhere has the government reported or COCOBOD mentioned that it has no money to buy cocoa.”

  • UK introduces stricter financial standards for international students in 2025

UK introduces stricter financial standards for international students in 2025

Starting January 2025, international students planning to study in the United Kingdom will encounter higher financial requirements, according to a September 10, 2024, announcement from the UK Home Office.

The revised regulations will require students intending to study in London to provide proof of savings amounting to £1,483 per month, while those studying outside of London must demonstrate £1,136 per month.

These figures represent an increase from the current requirements, which are £1,334 per month for students in London and £1,023 per month for those studying elsewhere in the UK.

This adjustment is tied to the maintenance loans available to domestic students, which have remained unchanged since 2020.

The Home Office indicated that these financial requirements will be subject to regular reviews to align with inflation and increases in domestic maintenance loans.

As a result, students enrolling in a nine-month course in London will need to show £13,348 in savings.

However, the total proof of funds may be reduced if a student has already paid a deposit for accommodation.

Additionally, students who have resided in the UK for at least 12 months under another visa route will be exempt from providing evidence of savings.

This announcement follows an increase in the National Health Service (NHS) surcharge for visa applicants to £776 per year, implemented in February 2024, alongside rising tuition fees and visa charges.

These changes will add further financial pressure on international students, but despite the escalating costs, the UK continues to be a favored destination for international education.

  • Non-performing loans ratio in banking sector increased to 24.2% in 2023 – BoG

Non-performing loans ratio in banking sector increased to 24.2% in 2023 – BoG

The Bank of Ghana’s July 2024 Monetary Policy Report has disclosed that the Non-Performing Loans (NPL) ratio in the banking sector increased to 24.2% in June 2024, compared to 18.7% in June 2023.

Even when adjusted for fully provisioned loan losses, the NPL ratio climbed to 10.8% in June 2024, up from 7.8% the previous year, indicating a rise in all categories of non-performing loans.

This increase in the NPL ratio is attributed to the faster growth of non-performing loans compared to total loans during the review period.

The industry’s total NPL stock surged by 49.4%, reaching GH¢20.4 billion in June 2024, up from GH¢13.7 billion, showing a deterioration in both domestic and foreign currency-denominated loans.

The private sector, being the largest recipient of bank credit, accounted for the majority of non-performing loans.

Its share of NPLs increased slightly to 95.6% in June 2024, from 95.5% in June 2023. Meanwhile, the public sector’s share dropped marginally to 4.4% from 4.5% in the same period.

Among the sectors, agriculture, forestry, and fishing reported the highest NPL ratio at 56.4%, up from 30.0% a year prior, followed by the transportation, storage, and communication sector, with an NPL ratio of 49.1%, up from 22.1%.

The construction sector’s NPL ratio rose to 36.8% from 32.8%, while the electricity, water, and gas sector saw an increase to 20.6% from 7.8%. The commerce and finance sector remained steady at 20.2%.

Mining and quarrying recorded the lowest NPL ratio at 13.7% in June 2024, slightly higher than the 12.7% recorded in June 2023.

SEC establishes task force to crack down on fraudulent online investment schemes

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced the creation of a task force and a specialized investigative team aimed at tackling fraudulent online investment schemes in Ghana.

In an interview with JoyNews, SEC’s Director General, Rev. Daniel Ogbarmey Tetteh, highlighted that this initiative is a part of the commission’s broader efforts to curb the rising number of online scams targeting unsuspecting individuals.

He also shared that the SEC has established a Securities Fraud Committee in partnership with other regulators overseeing the digital space.

“Most of the fraudulent activities are online based. That is why the SEC is also working with the National Communications Authority to deal with the challenge in that space”, he explained.

Rev. Ogbarmey Tetteh further noted that with the SEC’s involvement, several perpetrators have been apprehended and handed over to the appropriate security agencies for further investigation.

“These persons have been picked up. They have already been reported to the various security agencies for the necessary action to be taken against them”, he assured.

Deal with any of our officials who breaches your laws – China govt to Ghana

China’s government has asked Ghana to take legal action against any of its officials who violate local laws.

The directive comes amid ongoing concerns over illegal mining activities involving some Chinese nationals.

Galmsey activities have severely damaged Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves.

Recently, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) reported a deepening water crisis, linking the pollution of vital water sources to illegal mining operations.

The GWCL has warned of imminent water supply issues in Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding areas, noting that the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant is struggling with insufficient raw water due to contamination from galamsey activities.

In response, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, who was speaking during a recent press conference acknowledged that some Chinese nationals are involved in illegal mining but stressed that the Chinese government strongly opposes such activities.

“I know there are some Chinese involved in this illegal mining but we discourage them.We always request Chinese citizens here to do things legally, to do things according to laws and regulations and even traditional customs. I know there are some Chinese involved in illegal mining but we discourage them. Our president has told president Akufo-Addo to deal with any Chinese official who commits illegal sins in Ghana should be dealt with according to the law,” Mr. Tong stated.

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Tong Defa highlighted a 2018 agreement between President Akufo-Addo and the Chinese President, which established that any Chinese nationals involved in illegal activities in Ghana would be held accountable under local laws.

Ambassador Tong reaffirmed China’s position against illegal mining, stating, “We discourage Chinese people from doing this illegal mining,” the Chinese ambassador noted.

Amid growing frustration over the ineffective response to the galamsey crisis, Organised Labour has reacted strongly. On September 11, 2024, the group warned the government of a potential nationwide strike by the end of the month if swift and effective measures are not implemented to tackle the worsening situation.

Bawumia can’t join presidential debate if Mahama is not willing to – NPP tells IEA

The spokesperson for Dr. Bawumia’s 2024 campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has announced that Dr. Bawumia will only join the upcoming presidential debate organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) if former President John Dramani Mahama also participates.

The IEA has scheduled two presidential debates, for October 22 and November 19, 2024, respectively. In addition, there will be a vice-presidential debate on November 5, 2024, and five evening encounters leading up to the December 7 elections.

The first evening encounter is set for September 18, with the final one on October 15.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Aboagye emphasized that while Dr. Bawumia is keen to discuss national issues, it is essential for former President Mahama to be present to ensure a balanced and comprehensive debate.

Mr Aboagye stated that since the December election is essentially a contest between Dr. Bawumia and Mahama, the debate would lack substance without Mahama’s participation.

Govt secures GHS74.65bn in mid-year revenue – Report

Provisional data on budget execution revealed an overall fiscal deficit of 2.0% of GDP (commitment basis), falling below the budget target of 2.7% of GDP, according to the Bank of Ghana’s July 2024 monetary policy report.

The report indicated that the GH¢21.3 billion deficit was financed through both domestic and foreign sources.

A primary balance deficit of GH¢2.3 billion (0.2% of GDP) was recorded, slightly better than the target of GH¢2.4 billion (0.2% of GDP).

Total revenue and grants for the second quarter of 2024 amounted to GH¢74.65 billion (7.1% of GDP), falling short of the GH¢76.07 billion target (7.2% of GDP).

Despite a 1.9% shortfall from the target, the report highlighted a year-on-year revenue growth of 24.6%.

Domestic revenue reached GH¢74.19 billion (7.1% of GDP), marginally below the GH¢74.41 billion target (7.1% of GDP).

The report noted mixed results for different tax categories.

Tax revenue (including income, property, domestic goods & services, and international trade taxes, excluding oil and gas-related taxes) totalled GH¢59.70 billion (5.7% of GDP), surpassing the target of GH¢59.30 billion (5.6% of GDP) by 0.7%.

Taxes on income and property, including personal income tax (PAYE), corporate taxes (including oil-related taxes), oil and mineral royalties, and other direct taxes, amounted to GH¢28.68 billion (2.7% of GDP), 4.5% above the GH¢27.44 billion target (2.6% of GDP).

All components exceeded their targets, except for “Personal taxes” and “Corporate taxes on oil.” This represented a 20.8% year-on-year increase from the GH¢23.73 billion collected in the same period in 2023.

Taxes on domestic goods and services, including VAT, excise duty, GET Fund Levy, National Health Insurance Levy, and Communication Service Tax, reached GH¢25.97 billion (2.5% of GDP), below the target of GH¢28.30 billion. However, this marked a 24.2% year-on-year growth.

Non-tax revenue reached GH¢11.27 billion, 3.4% below the GH¢11.66 billion target, but recorded a 36.5% year-on-year increase, mainly due to lower-than-expected “Fees & Charges” lodgements. Dividend payments helped offset the shortfall.

Taxes on international trade, primarily import duties, amounted to GH¢8.39 billion, exceeding the GH¢7.63 billion target by 10% and showing a year-on-year growth of 39.1%.

“Other revenue” of GH¢2.54 billion failed to meet its target of GH¢2.99 billion, recording a negative deviation of 15.1 per cent, but was above the total of GH¢2.44 billion collected in the corresponding period of 2023, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 4.1 per cent, detailed the report.

Grants received amounted to GH¢457.3 million, significantly missing the target of GH¢1.65 billion for the review period, resulting in a 72.3% shortfall.

This figure was also lower than the GH¢864.7 million collected during the same period in 2023.

I’ll deploy military to fight galamsey if elected – Akua Donkor

The flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Madam Akua Donkor, has vowed to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, by deploying the Ghana Armed Forces.

The seasoned farmer and politician announced that, if elected president, she would entrust the protection of all water bodies in the country to the military.

During an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Madam Donkor stated that she would confiscate mining equipment from illegal operators and place them under military control.

She expressed deep concern over the devastation of water bodies, stressing the urgent need for decisive measures to safeguard both water resources and forest reserves.

“I will seize all the machines being used for illegal mining activities and hand them over to the military to manage.

“They will help protect our forest reserves and water bodies and stop all those involved in illegal mining activities. As we speak, the chemicals they use for their illegal mining activities have destroyed our water bodies and threatened human life.

“Ghanaians cannot have access to good drinking water. The contaminated water is now entering our seas and killing the fish in them. We will soon witness shortages of fish because our seas are getting polluted,” she added.

President Akufo-Addo has formed a five-member ad hoc ministerial committee to consult with stakeholders and evaluate the government’s progress in addressing illegal mining, or galamsey.

A statement from Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar on Friday, September 13, revealed that the committee will be led by National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah, alongside four other ministers.

  • Re-electing Mahama will lead Ghana to ruin – Salam Mustapha

Re-electing Mahama will lead Ghana to ruin – Salam Mustapha

The Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has warned that the re-election of John Mahama and his running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, would spell disaster for Ghana.

In a press conference held in the Upper East Region, Salam Mustapha, the NPP National Youth Organiser, criticized Mahama and Prof. Opoku-Agyeman for their previous policies, which he claims were detrimental to the youth.

He pointed to the cancellation of the teacher trainee allowance as a prime example of their poor governance.

Mustapha also noted that Mahama’s defeats in the 2016 and subsequent elections reflect a widespread rejection of his leadership by Ghanaians.

“Ask yourselves, from Kwame Nkrumah to Akufo-Addo, how come John Dramani Mahama was the only leader in our nation’s history who was rejected by Ghanaian voters when he went for re-election? Indeed, ask yourself how come he has been rejected twice since Ghanaians tasted him both as a vice president and as president?,”’ Salam Mustapha queried Ghanaian youth during the press conference.

He noted that, despite having substantial resources, Mahama’s administration led the country into issues such as dumsor (power outages).

“He inherited an oil-rich economy and without any global crisis to deal with he created his own crisis…Schools did not even have common chalk! The situation was hopeless. The leader himself was rudderless and inept.

“We witnessed his shambolic performance as president which saw your parents losing their jobs or customers because of dumsor. Yes, four years of President John Mahama was four years of dumsor,” Mustapha stated.

The NPP Youth Organiser also criticized the NDC running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman.

“It wasn’t John Mahama alone that was hopeless in office, but his running mate too. Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was equally if not more inept…Madam Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang supervised the monstrous heart-breaking 3-month pay policy, where teachers worked for 3 years and only got paid 3 months.

“This was how mean she was. She supervised the cancellation of the teacher training allowance, forced universities to pay their own utilities, and could not provide common chalk for basic schools,” Mustapha said.

He cautioned Ghanaian youth against voting for Mahama and Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, arguing that, according to him, their return to power would be detrimental to the country’s future, the “duo portend doom for our country and gloom for the youth who we should be preparing for the fourth industrial revolution.”

DRIP has potential but is poorly executed – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has promised that a future NDC government will revamp the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) started by the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

He criticized the present implementation of DRIP, claiming it is poorly executed and lacks proper planning.

During a media event in Sunyani, Bono region, on Wednesday, 11th September 2024, Mahama expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of roads in the region.

He pointed out that many roads are either inadequately constructed or remain incomplete, reflecting the shortcomings of the government’s approach to improving road infrastructure.

“You just don’t go and bring that number of road equipment; you haven’t employed operators, so many of the districts do not have grader operators or roller operators to operate the machines, so the machines are still standing there. Aside from that, they didn’t make a budget for fuel,” he said.

“It is a good idea but not well thought through. They hurriedly brought in the equipment for political gimmicks without doing the necessary organisation, so when we come we will take the concept, but we will advertise and recruit the operators, we will train them on how to maintain it, and we will make sure that the district assemblies have the budget to run those equipment.

…We will identify the roads; every district will have to identify the emergency roads to be worked on, and the government will budget for it so that we can give them the money to go out and work on those roads,” he emphasised.

We do so much for you, yet you vote for NDC – Ken Agyapong to Kintampo residents

Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has expressed his frustration with the residents of Kintampo North during a campaign event in the Bono East Region.

In a viral video from the event, Agyapong criticized the community for what he perceived as their lack of appreciation for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Agyapong accused the people of repeatedly voting for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), despite the efforts and contributions of the NPP to the constituency’s development.

He further noted that, as the Board Chairman of Ghana National Gas Company, he has the authority to approve the construction of an AstroTurf for the area but has chosen not to due to their continued support for the NDC.

“If you don’t vote for us and you ask us for development… I’m the chairman of Ghana Gas and I can give the approval for you to get the AstroTurf but I will not do it because you always vote against us.

“You take all the things in the world, but you don’t vote for us. So, I’m not bringing it (the AstroTurf) to you… we gave you a Controller-General but you were not pleased, we gave you the Director General of Immigration, and you were not pleased. What again should we give you for you to be grateful?” he asked in Twi.

He added, “We have to tell you the truth, we must not fear human beings. You also ask us for things and we do them for you but after that, you say you are members of the NDC. You vote for the NDC and no development comes here.”

Defend your rights – Mireku Duker calls on small-scale miners to resist calls for ban on mining

Deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister, George Mireku Duker, has urged small-scale miners to speak out against proposals for a total ban on their activities.

He argued that the small-scale mining sector is vital for Ghana’s economic progress and provides significant employment opportunities.

Mr Duker believes that implementing a ban would not be beneficial for the country.

“The small-scale mining sector alone contributes not less than 8.4 percent to our GDP. It is a sector that supports Ghana’s economic growth and it employs more Ghanaian youth. The large-scale mining companies in Ghana employ less than 10,000 workers, but the small-scale mining sector employs about 1 million Ghanaians.

“These people also take care of other relatives and the impact cuts across. If we ban mining, what will be the alternative for these people in terms of jobs?”

However, he emphasized the government’s commitment to encouraging responsible mining practices and urged residents of mining communities to help combat the destruction of water bodies.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Meretweso Community Mining Scheme in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality, Central Region, Mr. Duker also refuted allegations that the scheme is contributing to illegal mining activities.

“Organised Labour says they will embark on a strike, you also have to rise and speak. Small-scale miners, rise and speak. Someone is in Accra and does not understand the concept of mining, but we those in mining communities and know about it should continue to educate Ghanaians.

“Please rise against people who mine in the water bodies. Those who mine in the water bodies are nation-wreckers. The mining has to be done and done responsibly.”

I will vote for NPP even if it presents a “chicken” as its candidate – Supporter

A member of the Agona West Constituency New Patriotic Party (NPP), has vowed unwavering loyalty to the party, stating she would support it regardless of the candidate.

She expressed her unwavering loyalty to the party, stating that she would cast her ballot for the NPP “even if a chicken represents the NPP” emphasizing that nothing could break the strong bond of love she has for the party.

She added that all those speaking against the NPP will not have her attention as the party will forever be her favorite.

“Even if a chicken runs for election under the NPP banner, I will vote for it because we love the party,” she added.

In a related incident during the recent Ejisu by-election, another NPP supporter voiced similar sentiments in a widely circulated social media video.

The woman emphasized that she would still vote for the NPP, even if the party chose an inanimate object like a stone as its candidate.

“Even if you bring a stone as the NPP candidate, if it is NPP, I will vote for it. Lawyer go, lawyer come. If a stone is presented 100 times, I will vote for it,” she stated.

A 12-classroom block for your votes – Ken Agyapong tells Kintampo North residents

The Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, has struck a deal with the people of Kintampo North in the Bono East Region ahead of the December polls.

Addressing the residents on Thursday, September 12, Agyapong pledged to construct a 12-classroom block if they vote in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He noted that, despite the residents’ repeated support for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), the party failed to provide significant assistance.

Agyapong emphasized that it is now time for the residents to back the ruling party to secure impactful development projects for the area.

He criticized the NDC for neglecting the constituency, claiming that this neglect has led to the sidelining of individuals from the area for important positions.

Agyapong highlighted the improvements since the NPP came to power, noting that Kintampo now boasts a Director General of Immigration and the Controller General from the Region.

“Do you know something, we have voted and voted but you don’t vote for NPP. For all the 32 years you have been voting you have just Deputy Minister in your constituency. Let me tell you something under Akuko-Addo government the Director General Immigration was picked from Kintampo. Controller General is also from Kintampo. If you vote for NPP, I will personally build a 12-unit classroom block for you,” he added.

  • I’m against calls for ban on small-scale mining – Mireku Duker

I’m against calls for ban on small-scale mining – Mireku Duker

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, has dismissed the idea of a ban on all small-scale mining operations, calling such calls misdirected.

Duker criticized the destruction of water bodies and the environment by illegal mining activities and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering responsible mining practices.

While acknowledging the severe impact of illegal mining, Duker emphasized that a total ban on small-scale mining would be an ineffective solution.

He highlighted that the government remains dedicated to combating illegal mining but called for collaborative efforts to address the issue effectively.

His comments follow appeals from organizations such as the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and other unions, who have urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to impose an immediate ban on small-scale mining to curb environmental degradation.

Organised Labour has also warned of a nationwide strike if the government does not take decisive action against the environmental damage caused by illegal mining.

During the commissioning of the Meretweso Community Mining Scheme in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality, Duker announced plans to deploy river guards to protect water bodies, asserting that targeting small-scale mining as a whole would be a misplaced priority.

“It is misdirected because I was expecting them to have condemned the statement made by his excellency the former President Mahama before even calling for this action because you can’t just in a way out of the blue you just say put a ban. Ban on what.

“What are the metrics, what have you done. What analysis have you done. The statement President Mahama made was unfortunate so why didn’t they in a way ask him to apologise.”

“Secondly, yes people are destroying our waterbodies there are measures we need to take to clamp down recalcitrants who are destroying our waterbodies, and I agree with them perfectly…But I am against it.

“Personally against the call for the ban on mining generally. You can’t ban mining. Why must you ban mining,” he stated.

GAP and NLC announce withdrawal from December polls

The National Liberation Congress (NLC) and the Ghana Alternative Party (GAP) have announced their withdrawal from the December 7 Polls.

This decision was made following an emergency meeting on September 11, led by the founder and leader of GAP, Osahene Nana Agyei Boateng.

Originally, the NLC and GAP had planned to run Stephen Atubiga as an independent candidate.

However, the parties faced obstacles, including delays in receiving the NLC’s certification from the Electoral Commission (EC) and insufficient time to update their alliance logo.

The decision was influenced by various factors, including voter feedback indicating that supporting an independent candidate might be futile due to the dominant competition between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Many voters and analysts also believe that only the major parties are equipped to effectively manage the country’s current economic challenges.

The alliance also considered that a united third force of independent candidates and smaller parties could have attracted more support. However, the fragmentation within these groups led to voter skepticism.

Despite their exit from the election race, the NLC and GAP remain dedicated to their vision and manifesto.

They intend to back any party that aligns with their objectives for the country’s benefit.

  • NDC reveals approved route for voter register demo on Sept. 17

NDC reveals approved route for voter register demo on Sept. 17

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed the approved route for nationwide demonstrations set for 17 September, aimed at pressuring the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register.

The demonstrations will take place across all regions of Ghana, with the main protest taking place in the country’s capital.

Confirming the Accra protest route during a media briefing on Wednesday, NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey said the march will begin at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, proceed through Farisco Traffic Light, pass through TUC and the Ministry area, and conclude in front of the EC’s headquarters.

“We had a very good meeting with the regional police bosses, and the agreement is that we are going to proceed with our demonstration on the 17th. It’s going to happen not just in Greater Accra but in all other regions of the country at the same time,” Kwetey said.

The announcement follows discussions between NDC leaders and the Ghana Police Service at the Accra Regional Police Command.

National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi and Director of Elections Dr. Omane Boamah were also present at the meeting, where logistical arrangements and police approval were finalised.

The NDC has expressed concerns over potential inaccuracies in the voter register and has been calling for a forensic audit to ensure transparency in the electoral process. Kwetey stressed the importance of a credible voter register for the upcoming general elections, arguing that a thorough audit would be in the national interest.

“There are issues, and we are pressing for a forensic audit to be done, that’s actually the reason why we want to embark on this demonstration. If there is nothing to hide, there should really be no problem at all,” Kwetey added.

The party has called on all Ghanaians to join the protest, emphasising the need to protect the integrity of the electoral process and democracy.

  • Protesting won’t make voter register credible – EC tells NDC

Protesting won’t make voter register credible – EC tells NDC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has addressed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) concerns over the 2024 Voters Register, clarifying that protests will not help resolve the issue.

In response to the NDC’s claims, the EC has requested the party to present specific data on the discrepancies it has raised, but so far, no data has been provided.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Samuel Tettey, the EC’s Deputy Commissioner of Operations, emphasized the need for the NDC to bring their concerns forward for a formal investigation rather than resort to demonstrations.

The EC assured the NDC during prior engagements that any issues would be thoroughly investigated within a week, provided the necessary data is submitted. Without this information, however, progress is stalled.

The EC urged dialogue and encouraged former President John Mahama to advise his party to engage with the Commission. It reaffirmed its commitment to addressing any inconsistencies and delivering a credible voters’ register ahead of the 2024 elections.

Additionally, the EC reassured the public and political stakeholders of its dedication to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections, and requested trust as it works to correct any discrepancies in the register before December 2024.

“The Commission strongly believes that the surest way to attaining a credible and robust Register is not through demonstrations. There is simply nothing to demonstrate about. This is because the Commission has repeatedly requested the data on discrepancies from the NDC to no avail. We are of the view that, the stance taken by the NDC will not produce a credible register.

“The Commission is of the view that the best place to resolve the issues they have identified is the discussion table. We urge them to submit details of the discrepancies they have identified to enable the Commission investigate the issues and demonstrate to them that the concerns they have, have been resolved. As indicated earlier the EC assured the NDC during the meeting that it would conduct a thorough investigation and report on the issues they had detected within a week. Why are they refusing to submit the data to enable the EC to investigate and provide a report?

“The EC believes that the best way to ascertain the credibility and integrity of the 2024 Voters Register is the discussion table, not on the streets. Taking to the streets will not ensure a credible register. It will only cause tensions and suspicions which are unwarranted. We call on the former President, His Excellency

“John Mahama, an eminent and respected statesman of the Republic, to encourage and bring his party to the table as that is the best place to address issues and ascertain the truth regarding the Voters Register
We are confident that the former President will heed to our calls and do everything in his power to bring his party to the discussion table. On our part, we assure the NDC of a transparent process that would demonstrate to them that all their concerns have been resolved.

“The Commission wishes to state that, almost all the discrepancies identified have to date been corrected. As in 2020, the Commission is committed to providing the country and all Political Parties with a robust and credible Voters Register that will guarantee free, fair, transparent and credible General Election in December 2024. We urge the public to trust the EC to do this again and again.”

NDC official, 2 others remanded for removing NPP’s posters in Awutu Senya West

The Awutu Bereku District Court has remanded the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Officer for the Awutu Senya West constituency, Cassius Otoo Larbi, along with two others, into police custody.

The court’s decision, presided over by Her Ladyship Naomi Konto, follows accusations that the trio threatened to harm an eyewitness who confronted them for removing posters of New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate Eugene Kofi Bentum Arhin.

The posters were allegedly removed from equipment used in the District Road Improvement Project. The suspects have been remanded for five days and are set to reappear in court on Monday, September 16, 2024.

Awutu Senya West MP Gizella Tetteh Agbotui voiced concerns that her posters had also been torn down, dismissing the court case as “petty.”

However, District Chief Executive Moses Arhinful Acquah emphasized that the case centered on the threat made against the eyewitness, not just the removal of posters.

Acquah further referenced a prior incident where Larbi and others allegedly disrupted Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s speech at the Awubia Festival by playing loud music, which attracted the attention of national security operatives.

Help us engage NDC in meaningful talks – EC to Mahama

The Electoral Commission (EC) has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to encourage the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to engage in discussions to address the alleged discrepancies in the provisional voters register.

During a press conference held in Accra on Thursday, September 12, 2024, Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, made a direct appeal to the former President.

He emphasized that dialogue, rather than protests, is the most effective approach to ensuring the credibility of the 2024 Voters Register.

“The EC believes that the best way to ascertain the credibility and integrity of the 2024 Voters Register is at the discussion table, not on the streets. Taking to the streets will not ensure a credible register. It will only cause tensions and suspicions which are unwarranted.

“We call on the former President, His Excellency John Mahama, an eminent and respected statesman of the Republic, to encourage and bring his party to the table as that is the best place to address issues and ascertain the truth regarding the Voters Register.

“We are confident that the former President will heed our calls and do everything in his power to bring his party to the discussion table. On our part, we assure the NDC of a transparent process that would demonstrate to them that all their concerns have been resolved.”

He called on Mahama, describing him as a “respected statesman,” to persuade his party to join the talks, where concerns over the register can be properly addressed.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has emphasized the importance of former President John Mahama bringing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the discussion table, noting the party’s failure to provide evidence of alleged discrepancies in the Provisional Voters Register.

According to the EC, during a meeting on September 6, 2024, the NDC promised to share details of these discrepancies but has since failed to do so despite multiple requests.

The EC highlighted that five concerns were raised by the NDC in the meeting, but the party subsequently informed the public that the EC had rejected its request for a forensic audit of the voters’ register.

In response, the NDC announced plans for a nationwide demonstration on September 17, citing the EC’s refusal to conduct the audit. However, during a press conference on Thursday, Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of Operations, clarified that the EC had requested the NDC to provide evidence of the alleged discrepancies, but no such documentation was shared despite multiple follow-ups.

Tettey also refuted allegations from the NDC that the EC had added 50,000 ghost names to the register, dismissing these claims as unfounded.

“We have also noted comments from the NDC alluding to ghost names in the register. We are aware that there may be dead persons on the register because several persons die each year. One of the key purposes of the Exhibition Exercise is to allow relatives of the dead to initiate the process of expunging their names from the Register. The NDC indicated at the meeting that it had identified some 50,000 persons who were dead on the Register.

“The Commission once again requested the details of the 50,000 dead persons and assured the NDC that it would work with the District Assembly and Birth and Death Registry to expunge the names from the Register. As with the data on the discrepancies identified by the NDC, we are yet to receive the list of the dead.”

The EC assured the public of its dedication to delivering a robust and credible voters’ register for the upcoming elections.

Declaring state of emergency for galamsey menace is far-reaching – Lands Minister

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has dismissed the calls for a state of emergency to address illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, as “draconian and excessively far-reaching.”

A report from Citi News noted that while recognizing the gravity of the galamsey issue and its critical importance to the government, Mr. Jinapor cautioned that extreme measures could inadvertently damage the economy, disrupt livelihoods, and complicate governance.

Recent calls from the Trades Union Congress and several civil society groups have urged President Akufo-Addo to impose a ban on all illegal mining activities and declare a state of emergency in affected mining regions.

On Wednesday, September 11, Organised Labour issued a firm ultimatum, threatening a nationwide strike by the end of the month if the government fails to take decisive action against the escalating galamsey crisis.

At a media briefing in Accra, Mr. Jinapor acknowledged the intense public frustration and environmental damage caused by illegal mining. However, he cautioned that a state of emergency might exacerbate social and economic instability.

The Minister assured that the government is committed to engaging with labour unions and civil society organizations to find effective solutions to the galamsey problem.

“Declaring a state of emergency, that is in the bosom of the president, but I find that being far-reaching, [being] a very draconian measure to take.

“So we will engage him and we will have this conversation, and I believe out of that, we maybe need to come up with some consensus that we can work with.”

My US travel pledge is worthy of praise – Pius Hadzide claims

Pius Enam Hadzide, representing the Asuogyaman constituency for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has asserted that his commitment to arranging trips for constituents to attend the 2026 World Cup in the United States deserves commendation.

He views this initiative as part of a larger vision to offer constituents valuable international experiences that will strengthen their sense of patriotism.

“The World Cup is not happening in Germany, it is not happening in the UK but I spoke to those who relate with those going to work and bring money home or going to school. But in America, I specifically spoke about going to the World Cup. We are all hopeful that Ghana will go and play in America and Ghanaians will go to America to support them.

“I am saying that as a Member of Parliament, I would support and facilitate the travel of some of my constituents who are interested in going and supporting Ghana in America to go and do the same,” he said on Accra-based Citi FM.

The promise made by former Deputy Information Minister Pius Enam Hadzide during a recent engagement with constituents has sparked varied reactions.

Drawing from his background as a former Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Hadzide highlighted that his extensive connections and experience in the sports sector could open up valuable international opportunities for Ghanaian youth.

Despite facing criticism, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Youth Authority (NYA) has stated that he remains resolute in his commitment.

“If you don’t want me to do that, you can probably advise me against it but I believe strongly that given the opportunity I can provide opportunities for my people to also go to America and support their country.

“They are as patriotic as everybody else. We know the Supporters Union, they travel around the world and they go and support our national teams. So, why can’t my constituents also benefit from these opportunities that are available to other people?” he quizzed.

He continued, “Are we not aware that the Ghana Supporters Union, has branches and that they can open up a branch of the Ghana Supporters Union in my constituency, which will enable them to also get the opportunity to go and support the national team? I think that people should applaud me for wanting to create opportunity for our people.”

Cancer fight gets boost as Nana Jane makes GHC50k donation to GNAT

On Wednesday, September 12, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, generously donated GHC50,000 to the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Cancer Foundation.

The donation is part of an ongoing effort by the Foundation to secure funds for cancer treatment for teachers and their families.

The GNAT Cancer Foundation has raised concerns about the increasing number of cancer cases among teachers and their relatives, compounded by the high cost of treatment that many cannot afford. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s donation aims to address this urgent need and support those affected.

During the donation event at the Foundation’s offices in Accra, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang presented a banker’s draft and commended GNAT for its initiative in providing aid to its members battling cancer.

She emphasized the financial burden of cancer treatment and expressed her hope that her contribution will help raise awareness and encourage further support for the Foundation’s cause.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, as an advocate for education, stressed the importance of supporting teachers and their families in their fight against cancer and urged others to contribute to this vital cause.

“I want to appeal to the public that a fund like this has been set up. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is, and I am also appealing to all the unions to come on board. Regardless of how you grow up to become, regardless of the profession you follow, you would have gone through school, and I will urge all to show empathy to support this initiative”, she appealed.

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, expressed optimism that the GNAT Cancer Foundation’s fund will expand into a national resource, offering support to individuals across various professions.

She encouraged the Foundation’s leadership to focus on increasing awareness about preventive care as part of their initiatives.

In response, Mr. Christian Yaw Adinkra, chairman of the GNAT Cancer Foundation’s fundraising committee, praised Prof. Opoku-Agyemang for her generous contribution and called on others to follow her lead.

Additionally, Hon. Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, Member of Parliament for Adentan, also contributed personally during the same event.

NDC recruiting Togolese to engage in illegal mining – Mankranso residents allege

Recent reports reveal that the destruction of water bodies due to illegal mining (galamsey) across the country is largely carried out by foreign nationals, allegedly backed by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Residents have observed NDC officials from national to regional and local levels associating with these miners and providing them with advanced weaponry at mining sites.

The illegal mining crisis has intensified over the past month, prompting civil society groups and the public to call for urgent government intervention to address the problem, particularly the damage to rivers in various regions.

Investigations by the Small Scale Miners Task Force at locations such as Mankranso have uncovered a troubling situation.

Foreign miners, primarily from Togo, are seen operating in rivers like River Mankran without regard for the local communities.

These miners are equipped with sophisticated weapons and operate with apparent disregard for local regulations.

Recent raids by the Task Force, which included actions against some locals, suggest a coordinated effort involving these foreign miners to link galamsey with the current government, aiming to damage its reputation.

Locals have reported that these foreign miners, who often do not speak any local languages, are aggressively mining directly in rivers, leaving residents feeling helpless and distressed.

“Because they possess these powerful weapons, they are brutal and show no respect to anyone.”

Despite the strong opposition from local residents against foreign miners operating in rivers, they are unable to confront these individuals due to the advanced weaponry they possess.

During recent raids, the Small Scale Miners Task Force confiscated mining equipment, including chamfi machines and water pumps. Several chamfi machines were set on fire as part of the crackdown.

The task force has stated that such operations will be expanded nationwide to address the issue and curb the activities of these foreign nationals, who are causing significant harm to water bodies with apparent disregard for local laws and environmental protection.

Names and faces of galamsey operators must be published – PRINPAG

The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has introduced a bold initiative aimed at tackling the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, by launching a “name and shame” campaign.

This initiative seeks to publicly expose those involved in the destructive activity.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, PRINPAG strongly condemned galamsey, labeling it a significant threat to the well-being of Ghanaians.

The Association called on Parliament to take firm and immediate action to curb the menace.

PRINPAG encouraged its members to actively participate in the campaign by publishing the names and photos of individuals or groups engaged in galamsey on the front pages of their newspapers and websites, aiming to bring public attention to the culprits.

The Association also issued a stern warning to its members, stating that anyone found complicit in galamsey would face severe penalties, including expulsion from the Association and possible legal action.

The statement highlighted the importance of unity and determination in the fight against illegal mining, drawing inspiration from the leadership of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. PRINPAG urged its members to resist any external pressures that could compromise their efforts, emphasizing that collective focus and commitment are crucial to overcoming the galamsey crisis.

Ghana is close to importing water due to galamsey activities – Paediatric Society

The Paediatric Society of Ghana has issued a stark warning that the country could soon face a water importation crisis if illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, is not urgently addressed.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Point of View, the Society’s President, Dr. Hilda Manteebea Boye, shed light on the severe consequences of galamsey on Ghana’s health and water resources.

She expressed grave concerns over the rise in kidney diseases and failures among children, which she attributed to the pollution caused by these illegal mining activities.

Dr. Boye highlighted how the destruction of water bodies and the contamination of food sources are putting the health and lives of Ghana’s children and communities at risk. She called on stakeholders, particularly political leaders, to unite and take immediate action to curb the galamsey menace.

She warned that if nothing is done, Ghana may face a future where it has no choice but to import water, stressing that the nation’s health and future are at stake.

“We are seeing more new developmental problems that the children are having and indeed there are issues of kidney diseases, and kidney failures associated with the pollution. People are not getting safe food to eat, there’s destruction of the water bodies and children falling into pits.”

“We want the small-scale mining to be stopped. We want the political parties, all of them to commit to stopping this menace now because we are just afraid that in no time we may have to import water into the country.

“We are all sitting in Accra, and we are eating contaminated foods probably because food is coming all over the country and many of these areas are highly polluted.”

Small Scale Miners burn galamsey equipment at Mankranso – Report

The Small Scale Miners Association Taskforce has carried out a targeted operation in Mankranso and other illegal mining sites in the Ashanti Region, aimed at removing miners whose activities are devastating farmland and polluting rivers.

Upon hearing of the taskforce’s approach, the illegal miners, commonly referred to as galamseyers, quickly abandoned their operations near the Mankran River and fled the area before the team arrived.

The taskforce seized various mining equipment, including changfang machines and water pumps, and subsequently set the changfang ablaze.

The taskforce leader stated that such operations will persist across the country, vowing to crack down on galamseyers, many of whom he described as foreign nationals recklessly destroying water bodies without regard for consequences.

“We will fight to stop the illegal mining until our water bodies are clean, We are not going to relent. The issue of galamsey has become a political as we approach the December 7 general election.

“People are claiming the sitting government is destroying water bodies through galamsey, and government is also blaming small scale miners. Others politicians are also promising the illegal miners that they will be given opportunity to continue mining when they are elected into power. All these issues will not help us, that is why ahead of the elections, we the Taskforce of the Small Scale Miners Association has intensified our fight against galamsey to help the government and Ghana as a whole.

“If the operations of the Small Scale Miners Association taskforce is extended to protect our water bodies, there is no way these people can continue mining in our water bodies and polluting them. We can only fight them when we are empowered and supported by the government,” the leader of the Taskforce told the media after their operation at Mankraso.

He further expressed frustration, noting that despite their efforts to combat illegal miners, it is their own excavators, used for legitimate small-scale mining, that are often targeted and destroyed by the military and police taskforce during operations.

This, he added, is both unfortunate and disheartening, as it undermines their fight against the galamseyers.

A/R: Chief of Odaho, private developer allegedly destroy farmlands

Over 20 farmers, mainly women, have been left without a source of income after their farmlands were allegedly destroyed by the chief of Odaho and a private developer in the Ashanti Region.

These farmers, who relied on cultivating crops such as cassava, plantain, maize, and cocoa on more than 20 acres of land, now face significant losses and fear their livelihoods are in jeopardy.

The farmers allege that the chief intentionally targeted their farms for personal benefit, arguing that the supposed road construction is a cover for seizing the land.

Among those affected is 70-year-old Maame Antwiwaa, who expressed her distress, saying, “I’ve worked this land for decades, and now it’s all gone. What will we do to survive?”

Assembly Member Hakeem Mohammed is engaging in efforts to resolve the situation and ensure the farmers’ rights are upheld.

“I wanted to get first-hand information, so I went to the Chief to ask him about that incident. He told me that he sold that land to a developer so it’s the developer that sent his guys to come and clear the land and so he has called the developer to come and compensate the people.”

In an interview with Channel One News, the chief of Odaho, Nana Kwadwo Adu Bobi II, reaffirmed his commitment to community development, stating that the road project is aimed at improving the lives of the people.

However, he explained that the recent destruction of the farmlands was the work of a private developer, who also happens to be his nephew.

According to the chief, the land had been legally sold to the developer, but the destruction of the farms was carried out without his knowledge.

He expressed concern over the situation and vowed to address the matter appropriately.

The chief expressed regret over the developer’s actions saying, “When he came to the land, he couldn’t even come to me, he never came to me because he knew that I was so angry and maybe I was going to say something that won’t be good for him.”

“So, he just boycotted me and went and so when it came, I wasn’t pleased with that. If they could have waited for a certain time, maybe in three months, everything would be done but unfortunately, the damage is done and so we are now waiting for the solutions.”

Meanwhile, the affected farmers are calling for justice and compensation for the destruction of their farmlands.

‘Donkomi’: Man to sell his vote at GHS10 and more

A Ghanaian man has expressed his willingness to sell his vote for as little as 10 Ghana Cedis (GHS 10.00) and more in the upcoming December Polls.

In a viral video circulating on social media, the man expressed his frustration with the current political system, stating that he is ready to offer his vote to anyone willing to pay, whether it’s the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s former President John Dramani Mahama, or any other candidate.

His motive stems from what he described as a failed governance under President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He emphasized that voting for free no longer makes sense to him, as he believes politicians’ promises are filled with lies and deceit

“I am selling my vote for the December polls. I don’t care about the amount—even if it’s GHS 10, I will accept it. I won’t vote for free this year because when I do, I get no benefit. Akufo-Addo-Bawumia’s governance is poor. Even if it’s Bawumia or Mahama who comes to buy my vote for GHS 10, I will sell it,” he declared.

Vote buying has been a growing concern, with some analysts warning that it undermines the integrity of the democratic process and leaves the electorate vulnerable to exploitation.

Concerns of former members turned independent candidates are being addressed – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to continue discussions with party members who are considering running as independent candidates in the upcoming elections.

With the nomination period closing on September 13, several NPP MPs, including Cynthia Morrison from Agona West and Kwadwo Asante from Suhum, who lost their bids for the party’s nomination, have signaled their intent to run as independents.

During a press conference, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong revealed that the party is in talks with these members to persuade them to reconsider their decision.

Mr Frimpong highlighted that the NPP’s parliamentary primaries were conducted fairly, reflecting the true choices of party members. He expressed hope that those who did not win would support the nominated candidates but recognized that some have chosen to run independently.

“As a party, led by the National Chairman, Mr. Stephen Ayesu Ntim. When we took over the reign as national officers, we made it a point that we ensure that there is a free, fair election in our parliamentary primary and the media can attest to it, that we organise one of the best parliamentary primaries the party has ever had.

“And the results were very clear that the people decided on who they wanted to become our parliamentary candidate in the various respective constituencies.”

“So anyone who goes to elections always has the idea that it’s either the person who wins or the person who may also lose. So as a party and a true patron, we expect that everyone who went to elections and couldn’t win will support the one who won.

“But in the case of all those who have gone as independent, the party will continue to engage them to the latter, where we realise that maybe there’s nothing more that we can do, but we still have hope that all is not lost and we shall continue to engage our members who have gone independent.”

Clarifying the situation, Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah stated that neither she nor the CPP has made any decisions about her running mate.

She urged the public to ignore these unfounded social media claims, emphasizing that an official announcement regarding her running mate will be made in due course.

Elected as the CPP’s presidential candidate on September 4, Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah won the party’s nomination through a competitive electoral process that spanned all 16 regions of Ghana.

With 763 votes, she triumphed over her rival, Nana Yaw Anokye Frimpong, who received 586 votes out of a total of 1,360 cast, with 11 votes rejected.

In her victory address, Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah called for party unity to ensure a strong performance in the upcoming December 7 general election.

“In every election, one person will emerge as the winner, and it is essential for everyone to stand together to ensure unity and cohesion,” she stated.

Vote for me and I will take your wards to US – NPP PC to Asuogyaman constituents

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Asuogyaman, Pius Hadzide, has made a compelling promise to his constituents: vote for him, and he will help make it possible for their children to travel to the United States for the 2026 World Cup.

Addressing supporters at a recent campaign event, Mr Hadzide highlighted his connections and extensive experience in the sports sector as key assets that could open doors for Ghanaian youth to participate in major international sporting events.

This pledge comes amidst a backdrop of controversy. In 2017, Mr Hadzide, then Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, was involved in the Australian Visa scandal, where several Ghanaians were accused of posing as journalists to secure visas for the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Mr Hadzide faced suspension during the investigation but was later cleared of any wrongdoing and reinstated by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Despite this past issue, Hadzide remains a significant figure in the NPP and is now focused on winning a parliamentary seat.

His campaign underscores a commitment to youth empowerment and international exposure, aiming to use his sports experience to provide new opportunities for the youth of Asuogyaman.

“Nananom, did you know that it takes 18 hours to travel from Ghana to Australia? Yet, I was able to assist some individuals in making this journey. The 2026 World Cup will be held in America, which is just a 7-hour flight from Ghana.

“If you, Nananom, desire for your children to travel to America to work and send money back home, or if you are a young person eager to explore opportunities abroad, I promise to support you when I become MP.

“Unlike my opponent, who has had the chance but failed to assist the youth, I will facilitate travel opportunities for all interested young people to destinations like Germany, America, UK, France, and Canada.

“So, I kindly ask for your support in the upcoming election, and I will ensure that I help you achieve your dreams of travelling abroad.”
