Residents of three communities in Ejisu Municipality express concern over deplorable road conditions

Residents from the Echem, Akokoamong, and Achiase communities in the Ejisu Municipality are expressing their frustration over the poor condition of their roads.

These communities are grappling with significant dust pollution due to abandoned drainage construction, which has worsened, particularly during the rainy season.

Food vendors along these roads are feeling the impact most, as the dust deters customers from buying their products.

Residents are deeply concerned about the health risks associated with the dusty conditions, voicing their discontent over the unfulfilled promises from the government regarding road construction. Despite multiple appeals to local authorities, little has changed.

Kwabena Tawiah, a leader among the concerned youth, highlighted that the road to the Achiase government hospital remains incomplete, with an unfinished bridge forcing residents to take a longer route to access medical services.

The people of Echem, Akokoamong, and Achiase are holding onto hope, eager for their pleas to be recognized and for much-needed repairs to their roads.

The budget for shooting a music video in Nigeria can produce a Ghanaian film – Camidoh

Ghanaian musician and producer Raphael Camidoh has emphasized the importance of investing significantly in high-quality music productions, particularly in video creation, within the Ghanaian music industry.

In a recent interview with Melvin Da Enigma on Luv FM, he addressed the contrast between the thriving Nigerian music scene and Ghana’s current state, noting that local stakeholders tend to allocate fewer resources to their craft.

Camidoh pointed out that while Nigerian artists often have substantial budgets for music videos comparable to the cost of producing a Ghanaian film investors in Ghana are generally reluctant to support artists, their visual content, and marketing efforts.

“But in Nigeria, their budget for shooting a music video is massive, if one takes a look at their budget, it can be able to shoot a Ghanaian film,” he said.

He believes that the Nigerian industry has recognized the potential profitability of music investments, which is a perspective that seems to be lacking locally.

Despite the growth in Ghana’s music space, he advocates for a more proactive approach, suggesting that local players could benefit from adopting strategies similar to those of their Nigerian counterparts.

Camidoh’s recent success with his song “Sugarcane Remix,” which has amassed over 100 million views on YouTube the highest for any Ghanaian artist highlights the advantages of putting more resources into artistic endeavors.

He also shared his musical journey, recalling how his passion was ignited by Akon, and how he began his career selling drinks at a local school while writing raps.

Expressing gratitude to his fans and the Ghanaian community for their support, Camidoh encouraged emerging artists to identify and cultivate their unique talents to maintain relevance in the competitive music landscape.

“To find a spot, you need to find that unique thing that nobody else can do,” he said.

  • We will restore Founder’s Day to recognize Kwame Nkrumah – Mahama

We will restore Founder’s Day to recognize Kwame Nkrumah – Mahama

Former President and flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to restore Founder’s Day to honor Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s pivotal role in Ghana’s independence.

Speaking during a celebration of Nkrumah’s 115th birthday in Nzemaland, Mahama urged citizens to resist efforts to misrepresent Nkrumah’s legacy.

He remarked on the persistence of animosity towards Nkrumah, referencing the recent backlash over a derogatory comment made about the late leader.

“The hatred and bitterness harboured by those who disliked and hated Nkrumah still erupt from time to time, as exemplified in the recent outrage that was expressed by the whole nation by the description of Kwame Nkrumah in the derogatory term of ‘that your Kwame Nkrumah,’” Mahama stated.

Mahama emphasised the need to acknowledge Nkrumah’s contributions, insisting, “History cannot be revised, no matter how you feel about our children’s textbook with different versions of your history. Founder’s Day must be a day that recognises Nkrumah, the leader who delivered independence to Ghana and whose vision was continental in scope.”

He assured that if the NDC assumes power in 2025, they will address historical inaccuracies and reinstate Nkrumah’s legacy.

“The next NDC government, Inshallah in January 2025, would seek to remove the distortions in our history and restore Kwame Nkrumah to his rightful place in the history of Ghana,” he said.

Founder’s Day was traditionally celebrated on September 21—Dr. Nkrumah’s birthday—to recognize his significant contributions to Ghana and his broader impact across Africa.

However, the celebration was altered by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who proposed a change in both the date and the spelling—Founders’ Day on August 4, to include other key figures in Ghana’s independence.

In 2019, the public holiday amendment bill was passed, officially changing Founder’s Day to acknowledge the contributions of all six founding fathers: Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, William Ofori Atta, and Ebenezer Ako-Adjei.

The new date, August 4, marks two important historical events: the formation of the Gold Coast Aborigines’ Rights Protection Society in 1897 and the establishment of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in 1947.

This change aimed to honor all members of the Big Six involved in Ghana’s independence.

24-hour economic policy originally my idea not the NDC’s – Hassan Ayariga

Hassan Ayariga, the founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of appropriating his party’s ’24-hour economy’ initiative without proper acknowledgment.

He argued that this concept, central to the APC’s economic strategy, has been openly taken by the NDC.

During a recent event at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Auditorium, where the APC launched its manifesto titled “Nation’s Manifesto: Transforming Ghana and Restoring Hope,” Ayariga emphasized that the party has long advocated for this approach to revitalize Ghana’s economy.

He noted that extending work hours could enhance efficiency in meeting global demands, attract foreign investments, and improve citizens’ living standards.

Samuel Worlanyo Mensah, the APC’s vice presidential candidate, reinforced Ayariga’s claims by stating that the ’24-hour economy’ was first introduced by the APC back in 2016.

He described the NDC’s adoption of the policy as an unauthorized take on the APC’s platform, declaring it a misappropriation of their manifesto.

“The 24-hour economy was introduced by Hassan Ayariga in 2016 and 2024. It is not for the NDC. It is a stolen manifesto policy by the NDC,” he stated.

  • Bawumia’s number-one spot on the ballot gives him an advantage over Mahama – Kofi Adoma

Bawumia’s number-one spot on the ballot gives him an advantage over Mahama – Kofi Adoma

Media personality Kofi Adoma Nwanwani has raised concerns regarding John Dramani Mahama‘s placement on the ballot for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

He pointed out that Mahama’s position at number eight could pose challenges for him, as some voters may have difficulty locating his name, potentially affecting his overall vote count.

In contrast, Adoma highlighted that Dr. Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) benefits from his top position on the ballot, which could provide him with a significant edge over Mahama.

He stated, “Dr. Bawumia is in a safe position for the 2024 elections, but John Mahama is not. After the balloting, Bawumia is number one, followed by Augustus, Akua Donkor, Osofo Kyiri Abosom, Kofi Akpaloo, and others, before you get to Mahama at number eight.

“I have seen NDC supporters promoting the number eight with various slogans, while NPP supporters claim Bawumia’s number one position signifies his victory. I can confidently say that Dr. Bawumia is in a safe position, while Mahama is not,” he said in Twi during an Instagram live session.

The recent balloting, organized by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, determined these placements, with Bawumia securing the first spot, followed by other candidates before reaching Mahama at eighth.

Reactions to these results have been mixed, with some expressing optimism about their implications for the elections, while others remain doubtful.

I’ll build platforms for artistes and producers to mentor upcoming talent – Ayariga

Dr. Hassan Ayariga, the presidential candidate for the All People’s Congress (APC), has announced a comprehensive plan aimed at nurturing emerging talent in the creative arts sector if elected in the upcoming December 7, 2024 election.

In his vision for the future of Ghana’s music industry, Ayariga emphasizes the importance of artist education, innovation, and investment.

He proposed establishing regional platforms where established artists and producers can mentor young talents, helping them develop their skills and navigate the industry from an early age.

Additionally, he plans to launch an online radio platform that allows budding artists to showcase their music through accessible technology.

To foster growth and elevate the global standing of Ghana’s music scene, the APC government outlines ten strategic initiatives:

    Investment in Infrastructure and Education:

The APC aims to create state-of-the-art music schools and training programs focused on the artistic, technical, and commercial aspects of music.

Mentorship programs will be established, pairing seasoned professionals with new artists to guide them in refining their craft and understanding industry dynamics.

    Leveraging Digital Platforms:

The APC will support artists in utilizing global streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube, helping them reach wider audiences beyond local markets.

Musicians will be encouraged to harness social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to promote their work and engage with fans internationally.

    Enhancing Production Standards:

The government will invest in high-quality recording studios to elevate production standards and encourage collaborations between artists and top producers.

Training programs for sound engineers and video directors will be implemented to enhance overall production quality.
    Strengthening Intellectual Property Rights:

The APC will focus on bolstering copyright laws to protect artists’ rights and ensure they receive fair compensation for their work.

Educational initiatives will inform artists about the importance of copyright registration and provide legal support for contracts and royalties.

    Creating Exposure Platforms:

The APC plans to organize local and international music festivals, providing artists with opportunities to perform and gain recognition on a global scale.

Collaborations between Ghanaian and international artists will be facilitated to increase visibility for Ghanaian music.
Support from Government and Private Sector:

A music production fund will be established through partnerships with private investors to support artists and industry events financially.

Policies will be introduced to simplify international touring and distribution for Ghanaian musicians.

    Building a Unified Industry Network:

Strengthening organizations like the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) will advocate for artists’ interests and address industry challenges.

Collaboration among artists, managers, and producers will be encouraged to create a more cohesive music ecosystem.
    Promoting Ghanaian Music Globally:

The APC will leverage music for cultural diplomacy, showcasing Ghanaian artists at international events and festivals.

Efforts will be made to push for global recognition through international awards, including the Grammys.

    Encouraging Genre Diversity:

While focusing on Afrobeat and Highlife, the APC will encourage artists to explore genres such as hip-hop, jazz, gospel, and reggae, broadening their audience reach.

    Developing Music Business Acumen:

Training programs will be established for music managers to help artists navigate contracts and effectively market their music.

Stronger distribution networks will be created to ensure that Ghanaian music is accessible worldwide, including the establishment of a Music Royalty Collection Agency to guarantee fair compensation for artists.

This comprehensive approach aims to nurture talent, enhance production quality, and elevate Ghana’s music industry on the global stage.

“But as for me, even having just one wife is difficult for me to handle, let alone having about two or three wives because I want my peace of mind,” he told Amansan Krakye.

“I have one wife and four children, so whatever I was able to achieve in life, my family knows it, and I don’t have kids with any other women for them to think I’ve done something elsewhere. Because I want my peace of mind, I decided not to marry multiple women, but that doesn’t mean I have issues with someone who decides to have multiple wives.”

Rex, who has one wife and four children, believes in keeping his family dynamics straightforward. He noted that his achievements in life are known solely to his family, without complications from children outside his marriage. During the #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, the Ghana Police Service apprehended at least ten protesters, including a 62-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter.

The police cited traffic disruptions caused by the protesters’ choice of routes as the reason for the arrests.

The elderly woman stated, “I have not seen anything. I have not seen any statement. 62-year-old and 10-year-old arrested for saying no more galamsey. We have not committed a crime. We have not beaten anybody,” the 62-year-old woman said.

While the first day of the demonstration proceeded with some tension, the second day escalated into violence as participants defied police orders regarding specific routes.

In preparation for the protests, the police implemented a special operation, blocking key roads leading to the Jubilee House, which protesters aimed to occupy.

Numerous prominent Ghanaians joined the protests to voice their concerns over the government’s inaction on illegal mining, which is ravaging the nation’s forests and water bodies.

Recent reports indicate that the elderly woman and her daughter have since been released.

  • Wyllbee finally laid to rest

    Wyllbee finally laid to rest

Struck by grief and driven by a thirst for vengeance, the family of Wilberforce Appiah, known as ‘Wyllbee,’ made an unusual choice at his funeral.

Rather than allowing him to rest in peace, they urged him to seek retribution for his untimely death.

Wyllbee, who did not pass away naturally, was buried with two large machetes tools intended for him to avenge himself from beyond the grave.

In a deeply emotional ceremony, mourners gathered in Kwadaso, Ashanti Region, on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Wyllbee’s family performed rituals before closing the casket, signifying their plea for justice.

His mother, overcome with grief, was inconsolable, while his father, a pastor, gave a poignant sermon that deeply resonated with those in attendance.

The funeral attracted a large crowd, as people from all walks of life came to pay their respects to the young man whose life was cut short.

    Background:

Reports indicated that Wyllbee was killed in Abuakwa-Tanoso, Ashanti Region while staying overnight at Nana Yaa Nyarko’s residence, a property reportedly owned by her ‘abroad-based’ husband’s family, who were unaware of Wyllbee’s presence.

According to initial accounts, on July 5, 2024, Wyllbee was seen urinating in the compound and was confronted by residents who suspected him of being a thief.

Wyllbee allegedly claimed he visited Nana Yaa, but she purportedly denied knowing him, to protect her marriage from her in-laws.

This denial led to suspicion and accusations of theft among the neighbours, resulting in Wyllbee being lynched.

Reports also mentioned that Wyllbee’s phone was destroyed with a stone during the incident.

Family’s anger and thirst for justice

Wyllbee’s mother and other close relatives have frequently expressed their frustration and anger at seeing her son’s alleged killers in court.

While they remain dependent on God for justice, they also believe in the court system and that their son will ultimately be avenged.

Court proceedings and prime suspect Nana Yaa’s woes

As the prime suspect in the murder case, Nana Yaa had faced severe mistreatment, including being booed, chased, and attacked by an angry mob during her court appearances.

The crowd, in some instances surrounded the police van transporting her to and from the court premises in a bid to attack.

After many struggles, Nana Yaa was finally granted bail from a different court on August 15, 2024, having previously been denied multiple times by the Akropong District Court.

Both she and the second accused were granted bail of GH¢100,000 each with sureties.

Docket forwarded to the Attorney General’s office

Reports indicated that all relevant documents and evidence in Wyllbee’s murder case have been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office for further instructions.

Following the latest trial on August 27, 2024, at the Akropong District Court, proceedings were adjourned until September 30, 2024.

It was also revealed that the case may be transferred to a higher court, depending on the Attorney General’s input.

In a conversation with Amansan Krakye, he reflected on comedian Funny Face‘s situation and highlighted the varying emotional responses to such betrayal.

“Everyone responds to issues differently in life and there are men that when they find their partner having sex with someone it might pain them initially. But after some time they can let that pain go away and move forward in life and there are other men when they see such a thing it will end up destroying his life,” he explained.

Speaking on his own perspective, Rex stated, “It all depends on who the person is and that’s what it is but I’ve conditioned my mind in a certain way. I came to this world alone, I came naked and I’ll go back naked so I’m not attached to any human being or anything on this planet.

“What’s most important to me is what people will say about me if I’m no more,” he added.

You’ll be dearly missed, rest in peace – Kofi Kinaata eulogizes gospel musician KODA

Highlife artist Martin Kofi King Arthur, popularly known as Kinaata, has paid tribute to Gospel musician Kofi Owusu Dua-Anto, affectionately called KODA.

In a heartfelt Facebook post on September 21, 2024, Kinaata shared his experience attending KODA’s burial service the previous day at the KICC Dominion Center in Accra.

He donned white attire, symbolizing a celebration of KODA’s life and his ascension to the afterlife, and shared poignant images from the service, including the hearse transporting KODA’s remains.

“Yesterday, I joined loved ones at the burial service of our dear KODA at the KICC Dominion Center in Accra. We wore white to celebrate his glorious entry into the presence of his Maker. You will be dearly missed. Rest in Peace, KODA [fist, chill emojis] #TeamMooove,” Kofi Kinaata wrote.

Both artists hail from Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana. KODA was renowned as a multi-talented musician an instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, record producer, and sound engineer—who made significant contributions to Contemporary Gospel music, mentoring numerous emerging stars and producing many beloved hits.

KODA passed away on April 21 at the age of 45, following a prolonged battle with kidney disease, although his family has not publicly disclosed the specific cause of death. The hearse featuring KODA’s name also bore the inscription “Yesu Edi Nkunim,” a reference to lyrics from his famous song “Hosanna,” which resonates with the Christian belief in resurrection and victory over death.

In the spirit of this belief, John 11:25 reminds us of Jesus’ words: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”

Un-Ghanaian, uncivil, and unlawful: Police condemn conduct of Democracy Hub protesters

The Ghana Police have condemned the actions of the Democracy Hub demonstrators, labeling them as unGhanaian, uncivil, and unlawful.

They accused the group of violating legal regulations during their protest on September 21, warning that they would take all necessary legal measures to maintain traffic flow and minimize disruption for the public in future demonstrations.

The conflict arose from a disagreement over the protest location, prompting the Police to initiate a special operation aimed at ensuring safety and order in the city.

Consequently, several roads around the 37 Intersection were blocked, and traffic was redirected in parts of Accra.

Officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department were deployed to manage traffic and assist motorists.

The Police’s statement highlighted that the demonstrators unlawfully occupied the 37 Intersection, engaging in activities such as blocking traffic with vehicles and stones, setting fires, harassing road users, verbally abusing police officers, banging on vehicles, and even playing football in the street.

“The Democracy Hub demonstrators unlawfully took over the 37 Intersection and engaged in the following acts among others, intended to cause extreme inconvenience to the general public. They blocked the intersection in all directions with vehicles and stones, set fire in the Intersection, harassed other road users, abused Police officers, banged on vehicles and played football in the road.

“These unGhanaian, uncivil and unlawful acts of the demonstrators caused extreme inconvenience to commuters who were caught in traffic for several hours, persons in need of medical care had difficulty reaching the medical facilities, families visiting their loved ones who are on admission at the hospital had difficulty getting to them with essential supplies, there were delays in people attending social and cultural activities such as funerals which define us as a people and there was a negative impact on commercial activities including people missing their flights and others not being able to access their businesses.”

These actions, they stated, caused significant disruption for commuters, delayed access to medical facilities, and hindered families from reaching hospitals with essential supplies.

Additionally, social activities, such as funerals, were affected, and commercial operations suffered, with people missing flights and unable to access their businesses.

The Police emphasized that these actions suggested a lack of intent for a peaceful protest.

“Therefore, we are cautioning the organizers that the Police will not allow them to demonstrate at the 37 Intersection but should move the demonstration to any of the seven locations the Police proposed to them and we will be available to provide the necessary security.

“However, if the organizers insist on embarking on the demonstration in the same manner as they did on the first day, at the 37 Intersection or at any unauthorized locations, the Police will use all lawful means possible to ensure the free movement of traffic and prevent undue inconvenience to the general public. We would like to once again thank the public for your cooperation and wish to assure you that the Police will continue to ensure security, law and order.”

They cautioned the organizers that future demonstrations would not be permitted at the 37 Intersection and encouraged them to choose from seven proposed locations where police would provide security.

If the group persists in protesting at unauthorized sites, the Police stated they would take lawful actions to ensure traffic movement and public convenience.

They expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining security and order.

2024 elections: We will leave the NDC in shock with our victory – Nana B

Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B and the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed confidence that his party will emerge victorious in the 2024 general elections, leaving the opposition, particularly the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stunned.

Speaking during an interview on Onua FM, Nana B attributed the NPP’s expected win to their strong performance record, insisting that the outcome will be indisputable.

“We will win this election based on our superior track record. No one can rob us of the win,” he stated.

He also criticized Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, suggesting that his leadership would contribute to the NDC’s downfall in the upcoming election.

Nana B argued that Dr. Boamah spends more time speaking than focusing on his responsibilities, which he believes will ultimately lead to the NDC’s defeat.

“Dr. Edward Omane Boamah should focus on the work he has been given and stop talking too much. His party will lose the elections, and he will be blamed for not doing his work well and being the cause of their misfortune,” he added.

Number eight represents excellence; choose it – Bagbin tells Ghanaians

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has urged Ghanaians to embrace the number eight in the upcoming 2024 elections, associating it with excellence.

His message came after John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were assigned the number 8 position on the December 7 ballot paper.

Bagbin emphasized the significance of the number, encouraging citizens not to “break the eight” but rather to “choose it” for its symbolic value.

“8 is excellence. Don’t break it. Choose it!” his post shared via social media read.

This contrasts with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing campaign, which seeks to extend its governance beyond the traditional eight-year cycle, a move they describe as “breaking the eight.”

The NPP argued that an extended term would allow them to fully implement their vision for the country.

Bagbin, however, suggests that the eight-year limit should remain, signaling a preference for the established political rhythm in Ghana.

Forensic audit of voter register: ‘We are ready to meet all political parties’ – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced its willingness to engage with all political parties regarding the forensic audit of the voter register.

Director of corporate services at EC, Dr. Bossman Asare emphasized that the Commission is prepared to collaborate with parties, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to address any lingering issues.

During a discussion on Joy news, Dr. Asare reassured that there is no reason for concern, as the Commission is actively working to clean the register.

He highlighted the importance of dialogue with political parties to ensure transparency and credibility in the electoral process.

Dr. Asare stated “What the Electoral Commission is saying is that we are ready to work and meet all the political aprties and this is what we are going to do so as we are speaking now the cleaning of the register as we are using for the election, that process is ongoing and we want all the parties o be on board because Mr. Adams of the NDC is interested in a credible register, civil societies and everyone is interested so I think that it would be very bad omen on us if EC goes to the election knowing there are problems in the register when we can address and that’s what the commission is doing.”

National Democratic Congress (NDC) raised concerns on some anomalies and illegalities in the provisional voters register following an internal audit by the party.

According to the NDC, some of the discrepancies highlighted by their audit are the illegal transfer of names, missing voters and the inclusion of the names of over 50,000 dead people.

The party called for a forensic audit of the voters register to address any lingering issues ahead of the pending polls in December.

The demand from the NDC is yet to be addressed by the EC, raising concerns about the electoral body’s perceived reluctance and unwillingness to take necessary actions.

To mount pressure on the EC, the NDC embarked on a nationwide demonstration on September 17, 2024.

Several stakeholders and groups have since joined in the calls for a forensic audit.

GSA shuts down Chinese manufacturing company involved in producing unaccredited mattresses

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has shut down ZXZ Company Limited, a Chinese-owned manufacturer of Moonda brand mattresses, located in Afienya-Accra, due to the use of uncertified materials.

This action followed a tip-off that led to a market survey uncovering the company’s use of substandard products.

During a joint operation involving GSA officials, the Ghana Police Service, and media representatives, it was discovered that the company was using polystyrene instead of the approved polyurethane for mattress production, violating GSA regulations.

Additionally, the firm was found assembling televisions, refrigerators, and sound bar speakers under the brand name Asano without the necessary GSA registration.

A Chinese supervisor on-site claimed that the materials were acceptable in China, but later admitted that the company lacked the required licenses to operate.

Although she stated that the factory had only been running for five months, an employee revealed that she had been working there for two years.

Head of the Special Products Unit at GSA, George Anti highlighted the alarming extent of unlicensed production in the facility.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to regulatory standards to ensure consumer safety, noting that using polystyrene for mattresses poses significant health risks.

“Ghana is open for business, but it must be done within the right regulatory framework. It makes no sense to invest heavily in establishing a facility and then operate illegally.”

The GSA has pledged to discard the substandard products and require the factory to obtain proper certifications and use approved materials before it can reopen.

Anti further stressed that while Ghana welcomes business, it must be conducted within the appropriate regulatory framework, and companies must comply with the law to avoid penalties.

In a related discovery, the GSA found a Chinese-operated plastic recycling plant without a license in the same industrial zone.

The authority has issued a warning to all foreign manufacturing firms operating without registration to comply immediately to avoid punitive actions.

No ‘ball’ was swapped during balloting process – EC clarifies

The Electoral Commission (EC) has clarified that no balls were swapped during the balloting process for the upcoming presidential elections.

In an interview with Accra-based Joy News, the Deputy Chair for Corporate Services at the Electoral Commission, Dr. Bossman Asare emphasized that the process was transparent and free from irregularities.

Dr. Asare stated that all political party representatives, including independent candidates, were present during the exercise.

“We didn’t use any different balls yesterday. What transpired was that before the activities began or the exercise began, we gave the opportunity to the party to examine the balls.

“But before we began the exercise, everything was given and this was done before the full glare of the media and the political parties Dr. Bossman Asare stated.”

To further ensure transparency, Dr. Asare responded to a concern raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding an anomaly in the balloting process.

“It was later on that the NDC rep, Dr. Omane Boamah indicated that he has noticed some differences and the independents candidates and their representatives. We believe the processes were transparent so along the line when the NDC rep raised the flag that he believed one ball was so different from the others, the commission decided that this was an activity we were taken for the politcal parties as well as the good people of Ghana. We removed the ball to allow the process continue.”

The balloting process at the Electoral Commission (EC) for presidential candidates experienced some chaos.

This occurred after the Commission conducted the initial part of the process, which determined the sequence of the actual balloting.
Following this, Dr. Boamah raised concerns that one of the balls had a unique feature that could compromise the integrity of the process.

The National Director of Research and Elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako disagreed with these concerns.

After more than 30 minutes of argument, the Commission agreed to replace the affected ball, and the process was set to be rerun from the beginning.

As a result, the NPP secured the number one position on the ballot paper for the upcoming December 7 polls, while the NDC occupied the number eight spot.

It is saddening in the age of AI, balloting was done using ‘black rubber’ – CFI Chair

Chairperson of the Civic Forum Initiative (CFI), Dr. Angela Dwamena-Aboagye has expressed concern over the continued use of manual balloting methods in an era dominated by artificial intelligence.

Speaking with Accra-based Joy News, she highlighted the need for modernization to enhance transparency and peace during the electoral process.

Dr. Dwamena-Aboagye lamented the chaos that often accompanies the balloting process, calling it unnecessary.

“In this period of AI, I think we are way way behind and it is not good for our 2 main political parties, we call them the duopoly will continue to argue about everything. It is important that we come to a place where our main aim is to strengthen our institutions and the more we disagree over basic things, the more we weaken them.

“But we are in the age of AI, we can’t be choosing balls in black rubber bag, Ghana 2024. I think that needs to change. We need to have a conversation around it quickly to change that process.”

She further emphasized that the current practice of selecting balls from black rubber bags is outdated and needs to be reformed.

Dr. Dwamena-Aboagye advised the Electoral Commission to adopt reforms that improve its operations, stressing the importance of continuous improvement.

“If there is something we can say to them to improve the processess, we ought to do that seriously. In the past many changes have occured, there have been reforms that have stood us in very good steady terms of our electoral processes, we are proud of this reforms.”

The balloting process at the Electoral Commission (EC) for the presidential candidates experienced some chaos.

This occurred after the commission conducted the first part of the process, which was to determine the sequence in which the actual balloting would proceed.

One by one, representatives selected their slots on Friday afternoon.

Following this, Dr. Omane Boamah, Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), raised concerns that one of the balls had a unique feature that could compromise the integrity of the process.

But NPP’s National Director of Research and Elections, Evans Nimako would have none of that.

After over 30 minutes of argument, the commission agreed to replace the affected ball, and the process was set to be re-run from scratch.

The NPP picked the number one position on the ballot paper ahead of the upcoming December 7 polls.

The NDC picked the number 8 spot.

Ghanaian gospel artist Joyce Blessing recently shared that she is collaborating on a new gospel track with rapper D-Black and Highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena.

In an interview on TV3’s The Afternoon Show on September 19, she expressed her openness to working with secular artists, stating that their talents also come from God.

Joyce Blessing emphasized that she doesn’t mind any potential criticism for collaborating outside the gospel genre, pointing out that her previous hit “Victory” was written and directed by Kuami Eugene, a non-gospel artist.

“My victory song was written by Kuami Eugene, he directed the video and did everything. I only promoted it. So there’s nothing wrong collaborating with them. The talent they have is also from God so we cannot sit here and close our eyes and say King Paluta is not from God because he is not singing gospel,” she remarked.

She explained that she believes all artists, regardless of genre, are gifted by God, and there’s no harm in a gospel musician joining forces with secular artists.

“All of them, God gave them the gift they have so I don’t see anything wrong if you are a gospel artiste and want to collaborate with secular musicians because I have one coming up with D-Black and Kwabena Kwabena, it’s oncoming.”

Despite facing criticism in the past for featuring non-gospel musicians, she noted that listeners often come to appreciate the music over time.

In addition to this exciting collaboration, Joyce has also released her latest single, Overdo, which is now available on all major streaming platforms.

Democracy Hub organizers dismiss police’s suggested alternative routes for demo

The Democracy Hub, the group behind the upcoming protest on September 21, 2024, has rejected alternative routes suggested by the Ghana Police Service.

In discussions with the organizers, the police raised concerns about the initial route, emphasizing potential risks to public safety.

Following a court order prohibiting the demonstration at Revolution Square near the Jubilee House, the police asked for different locations.

The Democracy Hub proposed several sites, including the 37 roundabout, Airport roundabout, Opeibea intersection, Christ the King, and Arko Adjei interchange.

However, the police assessed these alternatives as still potentially hazardous to public safety, order, and essential services.

In response, the police offered seven new locations for consideration, such as the Cantonments Post Office-DVLA stretch, VAG Association junction-MTN Head office on Liberation Road, El Wak side park, Obra spot, Kawkudi park, Efia Sutherland Park, and the Trade Fair frontage.

Despite these suggestions, the organizers declined to compromise, resulting in no consensus being reached.

The police are now urging the organizers to reconsider their position and are encouraging public engagement with the protest leaders.

NDC embraces 8th position on ballot, calls it “God’s perfect will”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed enthusiasm over being assigned the 8th position on the ballot for the 2024 presidential election, interpreting it as a signal for transformative change after what they label eight years of poor governance by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a press conference held on September 20, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey articulated that the number eight holds special significance, marking a necessary shift from the perceived corruption and chaos that have characterized the NPP’s tenure.

“We came here asking for God’s perfect will to be done and we accept the number eight. After eight critical years of decay, after eight years of total lack of order, corruption and darkness that has engulfed this country, I think the eight is quite significant to tell the country that this is the moment to stop the decay after the eight years,” he said.

He conveyed a strong belief that this moment heralds a new beginning for the country, as the NDC seeks to confront the pressing economic and governance issues at hand.

Kwetey also took aim at the NPP, criticizing them for failing to adhere to initial balloting agreements, suggesting that the public is well aware of the ruling party’s approach to politics.

“The country clearly will no those who are doing everything possible to do what is wrong and those who are doing what is right for the sake of Ghana,” Mr Kwetey said.

With the NPP occupying the first ballot position, the NDC aims to capitalize on its eighth spot to galvanize support and promote their vision for a better future for Ghana. The ballot positions were determined during a recent event at the Electoral Commission’s office in Accra.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed optimism about securing the 8th position on the ballot for the 2024 presidential election, viewing it as a symbol of change after what they describe as eight years of misrule under the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking to the press on Friday, September 20, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey emphasized that the number eight is significant, representing an end to years of economic mismanagement, corruption, and instability under the NPP government.

Kwetey expressed confidence that this moment marks a turning point for the country, as the NDC aims to restore order and address the challenges that have plagued Ghana during the NPP’s administration.

He also criticized the NPP for disregarding prior balloting agreements, suggesting that the public is aware of the ruling party’s actions, which he believes reflect their broader approach to governance.

“The country clearly will no those who are doing everything possible to do what is wrong and those who are doing what is right for the sake of Ghana,” Mr Kwetey said.

While the NPP secured the first spot on the ballot, the NDC hopes to leverage its symbolic eighth position to rally support for change.

Disqualification of PPP: They deserve to be heard – Appiah-Kubi to EC

Asante Akim North lawmaker Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi has emphasized the importance of granting the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) a chance to address their disqualification from the upcoming 2024 elections.

He argued that providing a hearing aligns with the legal principle of natural justice, asserting that this does not guarantee their acceptance back into the race.

“It is fair that you respond to the legal principle of natural justice, give them a hearing. Giving them a hearing does not mean that they will scale up the hurdle,” he said on the Key Points on TV3 on Saturday, September 21.

In light of this, the PPP has announced plans to take legal action against the Electoral Commission (EC) due to their disqualification.

The party’s National Chair, Nana Ofori Owusu, criticized the EC for not allowing them the opportunity to present their case.

“My right has been truncated, they did not even give us a hearing,” he added.

Owusu pointed out discrepancies in the EC’s communication, noting that the reasons for disqualification given verbally by EC chair Jean Mensa differed from those outlined in the official letter. He stated that the lack of a hearing violated their rights and left them without a chance to rectify any issues.

Of the 24 candidates who filed nominations, the PPP was one of 11 disqualified by the EC, with many of the disqualified candidates being independents. The EC had previously announced that they would thoroughly assess the nomination forms to ensure compliance with legal requirements before determining eligibility for the presidential election.

“Following the successful conduct of the Filing of Nominations from the 9th of September to the 13th of September, 2024, the Commission instituted a thorough examination of the Nomination Forms submitted by the Candidates to ensure conformity with requirements as set out in law,” the press release announced.

“The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the General Public that the following persons have successfully gone through the Nomination process and qualify to contest as Candidates in the 2024 Presidential Election,” it concluded.

Carefully review contracts before signing – Sonnie Badu tells fellow musicians

Gospel artist Sonnie Badu recently raised alarm about the royalty system in Ghana, urging fellow musicians to scrutinize their contracts before committing.

During a September 18 interview on Rhythmz, he expressed skepticism about the current structure, suggesting it should be termed differently given its shortcomings.

Badu highlighted the necessity for artists to fully understand contractual terms to avoid being taken advantage of, asking “What are the terms and conditions before you signed with them? Before you signed with them, what did they tell you was going to happen?” he asked, emphasizing the need for musicians to be fully informed before committing to agreements. He recalled turning down contracts from Ghana, anticipating potential negative outcomes.

“I’ve had people pass contracts to me from Ghana that I refused to sign or let any family member sign because I read it and knew what the behind-the-scenes would be,” he explained.

He also mentioned the plight of fellow gospel artist Joyce Blessing, who disclosed receiving a mere 1,200 Ghana cedis in royalties after ten years in the industry. In light of this, Badu voiced his frustration with the system, stating he is reluctant to sign any contracts, believing that artists aren’t fairly compensated and that their work is being exploited.

When questioned about his own royalties from the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GAMRO), Badu indicated that his mother handles those matters for him, suggesting he has little involvement in the financial side. His comments reflect the ongoing challenges within the Ghanaian music scene, where many artists face significant barriers to receiving fair compensation for their work.

Help govt chase out illegal miners – Mireku Duker charges small-scale miners

On September 20, 2024, Hon. George Mireku Duker, the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, launched the Miners4Bawumia initiative in Akwatia, Eastern Region. He encouraged members to advocate against illegal mining practices in Ghana.

At the launch, miners from various communities expressed their dedication to responsible mining and voiced confidence in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership to secure their livelihoods.

Hon. Duker assured them that Bawumia recognizes the mining sector’s vital contribution to the economy and is committed to fostering its growth rather than imposing harmful regulations.

He outlined plans for enhanced policies aimed at both promoting responsible mining and addressing illegal operations.

Duker introduced the idea of a Mineral Development Bank, designed to empower Ghanaians to start their own legitimate mining ventures.

He countered recent calls for an outright ban on small-scale mining, asserting that existing laws already prohibit illegal activities, and emphasized the necessity of effective enforcement.

Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi, the parliamentary candidate for Akwatia from the New Patriotic Party, highlighted the positive socioeconomic impact of small-scale mining, stressing that millions of Ghanaians rely on it for their livelihoods.

He reinforced the party’s stance against a total ban, warning of the detrimental effects it could have on communities.

Mr. Jeff Konadu, the Eastern Regional NPP Chairman, urged miners to remain skeptical of the opposition’s promises.

All candidates were given enough chance to rectify their mistakes – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it provided extra time for candidates to correct errors in their nomination forms.

EC chairperson Jean Mensa noted that while some candidates utilized this opportunity, others resubmitted forms with the same mistakes.

She emphasized that the commission has maintained fairness and transparency throughout the process.

“As in 2020 , the presidential candidate were given a five day period for the filing process. This allowed enough time for aspirants to correct any errors identified in their forms. All in all these eliminates the confusion and tension that characterise previous nomination processes prior to 2020,” she said on Friday.

On September 20, the EC released a list of 13 candidates who successfully navigated the nomination process out of 24 submissions.

Mensa explained that these selections followed a comprehensive vetting procedure, with approved candidates representing various political affiliations, including major parties and independent contenders.

However, some disqualified candidates, including Bernard Mornah, are considering legal action against their disqualification.

The EC also announced that nomination fees for those disqualified will be refunded.

EC has no basis to disqualify me – Bernard Mornah fumes

Bernard Mornah, the flagbearer for the People’s National Convention (PNC), has pledged to contest his disqualification by the Electoral Commission (EC) in the upcoming 2024 elections.

On September 20, the EC announced the approval of 13 candidates for the December 7 presidential race, but Mornah, along with 10 others, faced disqualification after the vetting process.

In response, Mornah expressed his determination to challenge the decision, threatening legal action if necessary.

“It is a terrible afternoon but you can be assured that I am a fighter and I will fight this to the end, I will not accept this kind of disrespect and we will not accept the fact that the electoral commission does not want to play according to the rules.

“The EC received our forms on 13th of September. By 12: PM we had submitted our nomination forms and at 6:35 AM on Saturday I got a call from one Samuel Quoao, I don’t know him, he said he had sent a letter from the EC that there were some anomalies with the forms,” he said in an interview on Accra-based TV3.

Mornah recounted the timeline of events leading to his disqualification, indicating that his nomination forms were submitted on September 13.

He received a call from a person named Samuel Quoao, informing him of purported discrepancies in his forms just hours later.

He believes the EC’s basis for disqualification is unfounded, as he had promptly corrected any errors identified in the documents.

“I counted about seven different pages and the EC claimed that we have some anomalies. I immediately sent that the forms should be picked in accordance with the EC’s directive and the forms were completed on Saturday and returned. Mr Quauo called that our forms had been rectified,” he explained.

Stop the politics of insults – NAPO tells Mahama

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice presidential candidate, has urged former President John Mahama to refrain from using harsh language against the government, expressing concern that such rhetoric could imply a reluctance to peacefully transfer power after the upcoming December 7 elections.

This statement came in response to Mahama’s comments about President Akufo-Addo’s remarks suggesting he might not hand over power to someone he has defeated twice.

Speaking at a rally in Effiduase, Ashanti Region, Dr. Prempeh described Mahama’s comments as unwarranted.

He reassured constituents that, regardless of the situation, President Akufo-Addo will fulfill his duty to hand over power at the end of his term.

Dr. Prempeh emphasized the importance of securing the Effiduase Asokore seat, which he believes will remain firmly in NPP hands under Nana Ayew Afriyie.

He called on party members to engage in vigorous campaigning to ensure a decisive victory for the NPP, appealing for robust support from local residents to drive the necessary developments in the area.

  • 4% fuel price reduction won’t immediately affect transport fares – GPRTU

4% fuel price reduction won’t immediately affect transport fares – GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has stated that the recent 4% drop in fuel prices will not lead to an immediate reduction in transportation fares.

Union leaders argue that fare calculations involve various factors beyond just fuel costs, including expenses like lubricants.

While petrol prices decreased by GH¢1 and diesel by 58 pesewas, many passengers had hoped this would lower transport fares.

Alhaji Abass Morro, the Public Relations Officer for GPRTU, noted that drivers might see personal benefits from the fuel price reduction.

For instance, a commercial driver who typically earns GH¢20 a day might now make GH¢25 due to the lower fuel costs.

Morro urged patience from Ghanaians, clarifying that a drop in fuel prices doesn’t automatically mean fares will be reduced.

He also reminded drivers to adhere to the approved fare rates and avoid overcharging passengers.

I’m not a U.S. citizen despite paying millions in taxes – Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj recently shared on TikTok LIVE that she is not a U.S. citizen, despite her substantial tax contributions over the years.

“I’m not a citizen of America. Isn’t that crazy?” she said, before clarifying that she is still a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, where she was born.

“I was born on a beautiful island called Trinidad and Tobago. But I’ve been in the States for many years. You would think that with the millions of dollars that I’ve paid in taxes to this country that I would have been given an honorary citizenship many, many, many thousands of years ago.”

Expressing her frustration, she remarked, “Isn’t that wild?” and emphasized her Trinidadian roots, saying, “I was born on a beautiful island called Trinidad and Tobago.

I’ve been in the States for so long, you’d think my tax payments would earn me honorary citizenship by now.”

Minaj has previously discussed her immigrant background, particularly highlighting her experience coming to the U.S. as a child.

In a touching message about immigrant rights back in 2018, she reflected on the trauma of families being separated at the border, sharing her fears about the impact on children.

“This is so scary to me. Please stop this. Can you try to imagine the terror & panic these kids feel right now? Not knowing if their parents are dead or alive, if they’ll ever see them again… ”

Proud of her heritage, Nicki represented Trinidad during a recent collaboration on the remix of “Shake The Place” with fellow artists Machel Montano and Destra, celebrating her culture with lyrics that honor her homeland.

“Trinidad my country, the greatest carnival of all time,” Nicki said at the beginning of the track before rapping: “I’m reppin’ that red, that white, that black/ I’m reppin’ my real flag.”

After performing at the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, she expressed a heartfelt wish that her grandparents could have witnessed her achievements.
