A/R: Police arrest two suspects over gold robbery in Adumasa

Two persons, Atame Elijah and Nasiru Yakubu, have been arrested in connection to a gold robbery incident at the Bomfa Adumasa market, Ashanti South Region. The culprits were nabbed at their hideouts following a collaboration between community members and the police.

This was made known by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command while speaking to the media on Tuesday, October 21. The police retrieved a bag containing some gold and money from at the hideout. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspect.

Six individuals sustained injuries following the robbery incident which occurred on Monday, October 20. The armed robbers stormed the community and attacked some gold buyers, firing several gunshots in the process. In the meantime, two of the culprits have been detained by the Konongo Divisional Police Command for further investigation.

In a separate incident, the police in August announced the retrieval of items used by a gang of armed men during a gold shop robbery at Mpohor in the Western Region.

Weapons, ammunition, clothing, and other materials were among the exhibits. According to a Facebook post on Tuesday, August 19, the police stated that the retrieved items would aid in the ongoing investigation into the case.

On Sunday, August 17, one person was arrested in connection with the robbery. The police explained that the retrieval was made possible after officers from the Kuntanase District in the Ashanti Region intercepted a suspicious white Toyota Sienta near the Aputuoagya–Bekwai road.

Currently, the police are on a manhunt for eight others allegedly involved in the heist. They added that two men who were standing by the vehicle fled upon seeing the approaching patrol team.

According to the police, a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, a locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each, and other materials believed to have been used during the robbery.

“The Ghana Police Service, in its ongoing investigation into the Mpohor gold shop robbery case, has recovered weapons, ammunition, clothing items and some other exhibits linked to the case. As part of intensified anti-robbery patrols, officers from the Kuntanase District in the Ashanti Region intercepted a suspicious white Toyota Sienta near the Aputuoagya–Bekwai road.

“Two men who were standing by the vehicle fled into the bush upon seeing the approaching police patrol team. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered an AK-47 assault rifle, a locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each, additional packets of ammunition, cowrie shells, a Huawei smartphone, identity documents, and some clothing items.

“A careful examination of the recovered exhibits against the CCTV footages of the Mpohor robbery revealed a striking resemblance between the clothing items (hooded tops) and the wellington boots that were used during the robbery. The recovery of these items marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation and manhunt for the suspects,” parts of the statement read.

The Ghana Police Service assured the public of its commitment to ensuring security, law, and order across the country.
“The Police Administration commends the Kuntanase District patrol team for their dedication to duty. The investigation team continues to examine other exhibits and follow possible leads. At the same time, security operations have been intensified across the country to get the perpetrators arrested and brought to justice,” it assured.

What the law says about robbery and stealing
Section 149 of the Criminal Offenses Act states that a person who commits robbery commits a first-degree felony. Per Section 150, “a person who steals a thing commits robbery (a) if in, and for the purpose of stealing the thing, that person uses force or causes harm to any other person, or (b) if that person uses a threat or criminal assault or harm to any other person, with intent to prevent or overcome the resistance of the other person to the stealing of the thing.”

Section 124 of the Criminal Offenses Act also indicates that a person who steals commits a second-degree felony. Where the court that finds a person guilty of stealing is satisfied that, on not less than two previous occasions, the accused was found guilty of stealing, the court shall order that the whole or a part of the term of imprisonment imposed shall be spent in productive hard labour.

A person subjected to such an order is disqualified from election to Parliament or a District Assembly within the meaning of the Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462), for up to five years. Productive hard labour refers to labour in a state farm, state factory, or any other public co-operative or collective enterprise specified by the Minister.

In July, the Police secured a conviction in a four-year-old armed robbery case that occurred in Atonsu, Kumasi. The Kumasi Circuit Court sentenced two individuals to 15 years’ imprisonment for their role in the violent incident. The convicts, Abass Kasim (26) and Daniel Morro, alias “China” (25), were part of a gang of five that attacked a resident in Atonsu Kumasi on July 31, 2021, around 2:30 a.m.

The gang, wielding a pistol and cutlasses, shot the victim in the abdomen, inflicted multiple cutlass wounds, and robbed him of valuables, including an iPhone 11 worth GHS 5,500, a Samsung phone worth GHS 500, two Apple Watches valued at GHS 3,000, two ladies’ handbags, jewelry, $600, and an unspecified amount of Ghana cedis. Following investigations, Abass Kasim was arrested on August 12, 2021. During interrogation, he confessed and led police to arrest Daniel Morro. A pistol used in the attack was later retrieved.

On August 19, 2021, the suspects were arraigned before Kumasi Circuit Court 4 and remanded into custody after pleading not guilty. They reappeared on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, when they were convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each on charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, unlawful entry, abetment of crime, and possession of firearms without authority.
The sentences are to run concurrently.

They have since been transferred to the Central Prisons in Kumasi. Meanwhile, three accomplices remain at large.
The police also reported another success after an armed robber, Paul Avortide, was sentenced to 19 years with hard labor for robbery. The 25-year-old, on May 21 at about 4:00 a.m., attacked a pregnant Nigerian woman, Ogechi Chidiebere, at Tsikpota near New Housing, Ho.

Armed with a machete, he robbed her of GHS 3,000 and a Tecno Spark 30c phone valued at GHS 2,500 as she made her way to antenatal care. On June 19, police arrested Harmony Nbonu at Ho Main Market with the stolen phone.

He confessed that Avortide had sold it to him for GHS 850. A coordinated operation led to Avortide’s arrest at Matse, a suburb of Ho, as he attempted to flee.

After investigations, Avortide was charged with robbery under Section 149 of the Criminal Offenses Act, while Nbonu was charged with Dishonestly Receiving under Section 146. They were arraigned before Ho Circuit Court on Tuesday, July 1. Avortide pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 19 years in prison, while Nbonu was acquitted and discharged.

Meanwhile, three individuals suspected in a robbery at Nyanikrom near Shama Junction on Wednesday, July 9, were apprehended. They are Francis Mensah, alias Francis Kwaw (34), Ebenezer Cofie (32), and Samuel Bentum (35). The Western Regional Police Command arrested them following targeted surveillance based on credible intelligence.

Police revealed that the suspects, armed with insider information, planned to rob company officials returning from a bank in Takoradi with salary funds. On the said day, the suspects ambushed the company vehicle near Unique School Junction at Nyanikrom.
They broke the vehicle’s window and made away with the cash. A swift police response led to the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of GHS 149,500.

The suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations. However, the company’s driver, Maxwell Kofi Yeboah, alleged to have conspired with them, is at large and being pursued.

“The Western Regional Police Command assures the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspect and bring all perpetrators to justice,” the police said.

Despite these successes, the Police Service continues to suffer casualties in its fight against armed robbery. Several officers have lost their lives while on duty, though the exact number remains unclear.

One such incident occurred in September 2024, when an officer was ambushed and killed by armed robbers at Kwame Peprakrom in the Central Region. In response, the government introduced a GHS 50,000 insurance scheme for officers who lose their lives while on duty.

  • Ablekuma North rerun: Police could have done better – CODEO

Ablekuma North rerun: Police could have done better – CODEO

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has rated the Ghana Police Service’s performance at the just-ended Parliamentary election at the Ablekuma North Constituency as unsatisfactory.

In a press statement issued on Monday, July 14, CODEO, poor coordination between the police while overseeing the election.

According to the Organization, the police failed to execute their mandate despite their numbers.

“The security lapses observed during this election rerun—despite the visible police presence—raise very serious questions about the state of the Ghana Police Service,” it stated.

The Electoral Commission (EC) held an election in 19 polling stations of the Ablekuma North to provide its constituents with a representative after the 2024 parliamentary elections on Friday, July 11.

However, voting in two polling stations, the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station and St. Peters polling station in the constituency, was suspended and later continued following chaos.

At the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station in the Ablekuma North constituency, some individuals engaged in a fisticuff with the police personnel. Also, a JoyNews journalist was slapped by an unknown individual.

Former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and Member of Parliament for Ewutu Senya East Constituency, Hawa Koomson, was also assaulted by a group of men during the election.

In a video gone viral, a man lunged at Hawa Koomson, pushing her to the ground. Another person was seen kicking her.

The Police officers present intervened and prevented further attack against Hawa Koomson.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has interdicted one of its officers who was caught on camera slapping a journalist with GH One Television, Banahene Agyekum, during the rerun election at Ablekuma North.

In line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation.

The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North.

The Police have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the matter and further updates will be communicated.

It is unknown what exactly transpired between the reporter and a group of police officers that led to him being slapped.

The Police officer’s action has been condemned by all, including the mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who witnessed the unfortunate incident.

Engaging the media after the assault, Banahene Agyekum expressed distress and pain.

“Yes, (I won’t be able to continue work today) because my right eye is shaking and I don’t know what happened to my forehead. I have to go for a medical checkup,” he stated.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is holding an election in 19 polling stations of the Ablekuma North to provide its constituents a representative after the 2024 parliamentary elections.

After the 2024 polls, Ablekuma North remained the only constituency in Ghana without a sitting MP, due to unresolved disagreements over the outcome of the parliamentary vote.

On December 10, 2024, three days after the national polls, the EC declared Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC the winner of the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat, defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh.

However, the EC later revoked the announcement, revealing that results from 62 of the 281 polling stations had not been included in the initial collation.

Efforts to restart the collation in January 2025 were disrupted by multiple challenges.

These included interruptions due to the submission of unverified pink sheets and a violent intrusion at the collation centre that heightened security concerns.

The Electoral Commission (EC), after extensive deliberations, in July noted that it will hold the rerun election because the 19 scanned polling station results used for the collation, though approved by agents of both political parties, were not verified by the presiding officers responsible for those polling stations.

The EC arrived at this decision after it met with the representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, July 1.

Ahead of today’s election, the EC called on the Ghana Police Service to provide the needed security to ensure a safe environment for the conduct of the election.

Police arrest four students after violent clash at Christian Methodist SHS

Four students have been arrested by the Weija Divisional Police following a fight at Christian Methodist Senior High School in Aplaku.

The fight, which broke out between students and local youth, was triggered by a dispute over a missing mobile phone.

According to reports, tensions flared when an argument escalated into a violent clash. Some individuals allegedly used clubs, resulting in injuries to students and damage to school property.

Investigations revealed that students frequently charge their phones at a nearby shop, where they are assigned identification numbers for retrieval.

The altercation began when one student allegedly used another’s number to wrongfully claim a phone that was not his.

The conflict intensified when the peers of the student whose phone was taken confronted the alleged culprit, sparking a physical altercation among the students.

In an attempt to escape harm, the accused student fled to the phone charging center for shelter. This prompted local youth to intervene on his behalf, resulting in a confrontation between them and the students.

“The students can be troublesome sometimes. They attacked their student beating him to a pulp. They even destroyed the properties of the shop owner where they used to charge the phone. They later went ahead and stabbed some of the area boys in the eye.

“The area boys were angry because they attacked and destroyed Allhaji the shop owner’s property in his shop, leading to chaos. Some of the students were hurt in the process and the same applies to the area boys.

“The way they are behaving it looks like they are land guards and not students because this is unacceptable,” an eyewitness confirmed.

“We see them smoking Indian hemp here openly and if you talk about it they attack you. We see them using hard substances like tramadol and I wonder why this is happening so,” the eyewitness added.

Following the violent clash between students and local youth over a stolen phone, teachers are urging authorities to temporarily close the school to facilitate a resolution.

Meanwhile, on Friday, February 28, the Ghana Police Service took charge of security at Christian Methodist School in New Aplaku, Weija, in the Greater Accra Region to restore calm after the incident.

Fast-track inquiry into fire incident at Kwashieman Cluster of Schools – GES to Police

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has urged the police to quickly investigate and bring to justice those responsible for the fire that destroyed the library at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools.

The library had been used to store ballot boxes for the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary election before the fire broke out on Tuesday, December 17.

GES’s Director-General, Dr. Eric Nkansah, voiced his distress over the incident and assured the public that the authorities would take appropriate action to ensure the culprits are held accountable under the law.

“It is such an unfortunate event, obviously, as the Director-General for Ghana Education Service, it is one of the saddest moments that I would have. The school recently benefited from a library project. I think it came across as one of the best library projects that we have had in the basic schools across the country.

“It has also benefited from some kind of support from the ministry in just recent times. And the last thing anybody would have expected would have been to see the situation that we are witnessing now.

“It is affecting and displacing quite a number of our pupils, but as a service, we also have an education and emergency contingency plan, which is more or less like a business continuity plan that has been activated at the district and regional levels.”

  • Verdict on J.B. Danquah Adu’s murder case to be delivered on Dec 4

Verdict on J.B. Danquah Adu’s murder case to be delivered on Dec 4

An Accra High Court is expected to announce its verdict on December 4 in the case of Daniel Asiedu, also known as Sexy Don Don, who is accused of murdering J.B. Danquah Adu.

The court has set this date to hear the final statements from both the prosecution and the defence. Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, a Court of Appeal judge with additional High Court duties, will provide a summary of the case before delivering the ruling.

On Thursday, Principal State Attorney Sefakor Batsa concluded the cross-examination of Asiedu, also known as Gucci Young Star.

During the session, Asiedu denied the allegations that his DNA was found at the home of the late MP, as well as on the property of a key witness,

Abigail Marfo, where he is said to have washed himself after the crime. He also rejected the claim that the red hat found on Marfo’s property contained 100% of his DNA.

“The Police never collected any mobile phone from me. They rather took the phone from another guy who I do not know.

“I later heard the guy they took the phone from, went to the house of Madam Ursula Ekuful and Kennedy Agyapong, and a meeting was held for about 30 minutes.

“The police refused to call all these people to come and testify in court,” Asiedu said.

Asiedu argued that he had only given one statement to the police and that all other statements attributed to him were coerced.

He insisted that the police had fabricated the additional statements, forcing him to thumbprint them.

The accused also denied the prosecution’s allegations that he not only stabbed the deceased but also stole his mobile phones. He claimed that the police had never recovered any mobile phone from him.

According to Asiedu, the police had taken a phone from another individual, whom he did not know. He further alleged that this individual had attended meetings at the homes of Ursula Ekuful and Kennedy Agyapong but was never called to testify in court.

Asiedu acknowledged that his name and alias were tattooed on his body and offered to show them to the jury if allowed.

However, he continued to maintain his innocence, denying any involvement in the death of J.B. Danquah Adu, who was fatally stabbed on February 8, 2016.

In response to questions from the jury, Asiedu explained that he had visited the Regional Police Command to report an incident involving a prostitute.

Regarding a bloodstained cup, which was allegedly given to him during the scene reconstruction, he confirmed having blood on his hands due to a head injury but could not confirm whether the cup contained his blood.

He also mentioned that due to the stress of the situation, he was unsure if the deceased’s house had security cameras.

Asiedu, who faces murder charges, has pleaded not guilty to the allegations. His alleged accomplice, Vincent Bossu, also known as Junior Agogo, was acquitted of conspiracy charges after the court ruled there was no case against him.

The confiscation followed an intelligence-driven operation by the West Mamprusi Police Command.

The cocoa beans are now in police custody as investigations continue into the matter.

“This is what we are doing as a government to improve the economic growth of the country through the provision of infrastructure development”, Fahd Osman stated.

He also encouraged Ghanaians to vote for the NPP on December 7 to ensure the continuity of these projects.

While acknowledging some challenges, Osman emphasized that they have not stopped the government from achieving key milestones.

He further mentioned the NPP’s success in building two new firefighter training schools, one in the North and one in Ahafo.

“If you go to the police service, we have added more infrastructure than any other government. Currently, President Akufo-Addo has been able to construct a total of 1000 housing units for the police service’ one at Kwabenya and the other at the Police Depo in Tesano,” Osman added.

Burkina Faso insurgency: Our security agencies won’t let Ghana down – Toobu

The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee and MP for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has expressed his support for Ghana’s security agencies in their fight against insurgencies and their commitment to national security.

This statement follows reports that Islamist militants from Burkina Faso are reportedly utilizing parts of northern Ghana for logistical and medical purposes amidst their ongoing insurgency.

Mr Toobu called on Ghanaians to have confidence in the nation’s security forces and to acknowledge the significant yet often invisible efforts being made to keep the country secure.

“The Accra initiative is an initiative with Burkina Faso, Niger and other countries in the Sahel region, who are involved and we share so much information for the sole stability of this region. In the parlance of security, it’s not every information that we see on the surface like that.

“Whatever it is, if you wake up in the morning and there’s still peace, you should know that somebody behind the scenes has worked so hard for you to have that peace. Probably you don’t know what they do, you may be thinking from the superficial things that you see, the off-scenes you see. What we are saying is that there are a lot of things happening.

“There’s a lot of things that have been done to ensure our country remains secure and safe. Let me assure you that the security agencies, we have professional police and Armed Forces and I think that all the security agencies in the country are not sleeping.

“The collaboration with Burkina Faso is so solid and I believe that in the area of peace, we should be rest assured that they will not let the people of Ghana down,” Toobu said.

Police never covered my medical costs – Barker-Vormawor

Leader of the Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has pushed back against claims made by the Ghana Police Service regarding the payment of his medical bills while in detention.

In a post on his X account on Monday, October 14, 2024, Barker-Vormawor stated that although the police took him to the hospital, they failed to pay for his prescribed medication and medical tests.

“Yes, I can confirm the Ghana Police Service took me to the hospital and couldn’t pay for my drugs and medical tests.

“On the first day, they kept harassing the just-released protestors who came to see me at the hospital to pay for the medications prescribed by the hospital. They refused and called the police out on it.”

He added that after news of this incident spread, the police reimbursed the money by sending mobile money (MoMo) to one of the protestors, Priscilla, to cover what they had taken from his brother.

“Eventually, my brother gave the CID 100 cedis to pay for part of the drugs. The other drugs prescribed were not procured. Also, they didn’t pay for the blood tests that I had to do that day. When the news broke that they didn’t pay for the drugs, they sent Momo to Priscilla, one of the arrested protestors, to reimburse the money they took from my brother,” he revealed.

Barker-Vormawor also shared that when he returned to the hospital the next day, the police eventually paid for part of the remaining medication, but only after public pressure.

He has since challenged the police to provide receipts for the drugs they claimed to have purchased, giving them full consent to release the information.

He further alleged that it’s common practice for police to take detainees to the hospital and not provide the prescribed medication, citing his personal experience of having to buy drugs for another inmate just a day earlier.

“It is routine for the police to take several suspects to the hospital only to return without their prescribed drugs,” he said, adding that he had personally purchased drugs for another inmate the previous day.

On October 11, 2024, the Ghana Police Service issued a statement asserting that they had covered all of Barker-Vormawor’s medical expenses in accordance with their Standard Operating Procedures for suspects in custody. They also denied reports that he had been rushed to the hospital, labeling them as false.

Barker-Vormawor remains in custody after being denied bail, following his arrest with 52 other protestors for charges including unlawful assembly, assault, and defacement of public property during a demonstration against illegal mining (galamsey).

Pastor, 5 others remanded for attacking police officer at Ketu

A Circuit Court in Tokor, within the Ketu South District of the Volta Region, has remanded Reverend Gilbert Korney, a 42-year-old pastor of the Apostles Revelation Society (ARS) headquarters in Tadzewu, into police custody on charges of causing harm.

Alongside him, Raymond Wovenu, a 52-year-old businessman, and Harry Atsu Wovenu, 36, both sons of the High Priest of ARS at Dzodze, Nyeenyami Etse Wovenu, were also remanded.

Other individuals involved in the case include Mathew Lartey, a 31-year-old farmer, and Otto Tormetsi, 89, and Victor Dzisenu, 80, who served as security personnel for the church.

According to the prosecutor, Chief Inspector McRae Pomevor, the incident occurred on August 10, 2024, when a police team, led by Superintendent Eric Vondee, the acting Dzodze District Police Commander, and ASP James Anaman, Ketu Divisional Motor Transport and Traffic Department Commander, arrived in Tadzewu.

The 32 police officers were dispatched in response to a request from ARS leadership to provide security for a delegates’ conference.

Upon arrival at the ARS premises, the police were met with resistance from approximately 20 supporters of the High Priest, including the accused.

They had locked all gates to the church compound, preventing church members from entering the conference venue. The situation escalated as the accused and their associates allegedly attacked police officers and civilians using stones, petrol bombs, and catapults.

One of the attackers, identified as Mathew, threw a stone that struck Detective Sergeant Edward Quansah, causing severe dental injuries.

The suspects also targeted vehicles, including a Nissan Pathfinder and a Toyota Hilux belonging to one of the conference organizers. Both vehicles sustained significant damage, with petrol bombs igniting in the Hilux’s cargo area, burning the leather cover.

As the confrontation intensified, the accused rang the church bell to summon locals to the scene. During the commotion, Mathew attempted to shoot ASP Anaman with a catapult but missed, hitting a bystander, Kudjoe Hadza, who suffered serious injuries.

Chief Insp Pomevor stated, “Some of these stones and petrol bombs hit the complainant’s vehicle, Toyota Hilux, with registration number GC 7669–20 causing extensive damage to the left windscreen, the fender, and the left side passenger door. Some of the petrol bombs also landed in the bucket of the said vehicle burning the leather used to cover the bucket.”

The prosecution again noted that the “accused also rang the church bell to draw the town folks to the scene when the police tried to drive their vehicles to safety to prevent further damage.”

Following the altercation, the police withdrew and reported the incident at the Dzodze Police Station. Four individuals were subsequently arrested, and two others later turned themselves in, accompanied by their lawyer, Jonathan Adzokpe.

The court, presided over by Mr. Joseph Ofosu Behome, heard that several suspects remain at large, and investigations are ongoing. The remanded suspects are scheduled to appear again on October 9, 2024.

Founded in 1939, the ARS is known for integrating African values into its religious practices. Since the passing of its founder, Mawu fe Ame Charles Kwablavi Nutornti Wovenu, the church has been plagued by leadership disputes, which have sparked multiple conflicts, including the current legal case.

Pregnant protester arrest claims are untrue – Police

The Ghana Police Service has issued a clarification regarding Gloria Vera Louise, who was among those arrested during the Democracy Hub demonstration.

Contrary to earlier reports claiming she was four months pregnant at the time of her arrest and subsequent two-week remand, the police have confirmed that she is not pregnant.

In a statement, the police stated that medical examinations conducted at independent health facilities verified Gloria’s non-pregnant status.

Additionally, they mentioned that no visible signs of pregnancy were observed during her arrest.

“In the case of the alleged pregnant woman, Gloria Vera Louise, We would like to clarify that at the time of the arrest, there was no visible indication that she was pregnant. Additionally, at no point during the arrest or subsequent interactions did the said suspect inform the Police of a pregnancy. Again, there was no communication to the court of any such condition, either by herself or through her lawyers.

“In order to establish the veracity or otherwise of the claim in the public domain of the alleged pregnancy, the Police took the initiative and sent her to the Police Hospital and an independent health facility for a thorough medical examination. Both medical results came out negative, suggesting that Gloria Vera Louise, is not pregnant as claimed.”

The Office of the Attorney General previously voiced disappointment over Gloria’s lawyers for not disclosing her alleged pregnancy during the bail hearing.

In related news, the police have also filed charges against Grace Asantewaa, who is accused of endangering a child during a recent demonstration.

“The Ghana Police Service has charged Grace Asantewaa with the offence of exposing a child to danger, by bringing her to the demonstration grounds, contrary to section 71 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

“We would like to use this opportunity to advise members of the public to be mindful of involving our beloved children in activities that have the potential to expose them to danger.”

The Ghana Police Service has successfully brought calm to Walewale following disruptions during the vote-counting process in the rerun of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primary for the Walewale Constituency.

The incident resulted in the arrest of Kamara Bawah, who was taken into custody for damaging several ballot papers.

He is now assisting authorities with the ongoing investigation.

In light of the unrest, security forces have been bolstered in Walewale and surrounding areas to ensure peace and stability.

Earlier reports by Citi News’ North East Regional correspondent, Mohammed Aminu Alabira, indicated that the elections in Walewale had faced yet another disruption.

The day was marked by intermittent disturbances, with allegations of military personnel assaulting some individuals at the voting center.

Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, one of the aspirants, raised concerns earlier in the day about the venue and a lack of official communication about the election arrangements.

Although many anticipated that the sorting and counting of ballots would be conducted in an open space, the process was held behind closed doors in a church room.

The election committee chairman reported that an unidentified individual interrupted the process, leading to their subsequent arrest.

Expressing frustration, Dr. Kabiru criticized the handling of the election, questioning the integrity of the NPP’s democratic processes.

His supporter, constituency chairman Mohammed Muniru Janda, added that Dr. Kabiru seemed to have been in the lead before the disruption and raised doubts about the security and fairness of the ballot counting.

Police, military must be recruited serve as December polls returning officers – Kyiri Abosom to EC

Leader of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Christian Kwabena Andrews (Osofo Kyiri Abosom), has urged the Electoral Commission (EC), under the leadership of Jean Mensa, to appoint military and police personnel as returning officers for the 2024 elections.

Andrews argues that current EC recruits often have ties to political parties, which could compromise the fairness of the electoral process.

In an interview on UTV on July 16, 2024, Andrews emphasized that the presence of party-affiliated officials within the EC undermines national interests.

He suggested that involving security forces would ensure impartial management of the electoral process, enhancing its integrity.

“The EC hasn’t done anything wrong because when you talk about the EC, it has to do with Jean Mensa and her deputies,” Andrews explained. “But the party has sent their people to the EC to recruit them.

“So, they wear the EC cloth, but deep down inside, they are representing their political parties. Such people are not there to help the country,” he said.

He proposed that election results from constituencies should be verified at police stations before submission to the EC to enhance transparency.

Andrews also appealed to Ghanaians to support his candidacy in the upcoming elections, stressing the importance of prioritizing national challenges over political loyalties.

He pledged to tackle the country’s hardships through initiatives in industrialization, educational reform, and job creation.

“I urge Ghanaians to vote for me to make the country better,” Andrews stated.

“Do not vote based on political affiliations, but consider the hardship you are enduring and vote accordingly.”

During an inspection of the site by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), extensive sections of the Kpeshie Lagoon were discovered filled for development, with structures at various stages of construction.

Chairman of the Accra REGSEC, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, addressing reporters, assured that unauthorized structures would be demolished in the coming days.

“They were picked up because we wanted to get the right people who own these structures. Some are ordinary workers; when you ask them, they will tell you that they were sent here to work.

“So, as we have picked them, they are in the hands of the police, and they will go through the process, and whoever asked them to come and work should be able to produce them. When they do, they will be given bail, and then the law will take its course,” he stated.

“This one is closer to the Kpeshie; we will pull it down. There is another on your left, and they are building at the edge of the Kpeshie, and we will pull that one down too. At the far end, close to the shooting range, it will also be pulled down.

“We invite everybody to come, and we want to know who sold the land to the people. Because my traditional leaders are telling me they have not sold the land to anybody.

“They only told them that they wanted wooden structures, not permanent structures. So, they should tell us who sold the land to them. ,” he added.

  • Don’t be partial in 2024 elections – Korankye-Ankrah urges police

Don’t be partial in 2024 elections – Korankye-Ankrah urges police

The Apostle-General of the Royalhouse Chapel International (RCI), Rev. Sam Korankye-Ankrah, has passionately urged the Ghana Police Service to maintain impartiality in their duties, especially as Ghana approaches its election year.

During his visit to Tamale as part of the Encounter With The Oil initiative in the Northern Region, he emphasized the critical role of the police and other security agencies in ensuring peace and upholding Ghana’s democracy.

Rev. Sam Korankye-Ankrah stressed that amidst the backdrop of the 2024 general elections, where significant expectations rest on them, the police must remain steadfast and resolute.

He highlighted the complexities of this election year, noting the religious and familial dynamics of the leading candidates, alongside economic challenges, which heighten the stakes for a peaceful electoral process.

“This is an election year and Ghana will be looking to the police for security and for a smooth before, during and after elections of 2024. This year’s election is dicey on so many fronts; on the fronts of religion, on the front of the two candidates all coming from the north – they are brothers and cousins, and against the backdrop of the economic conditions and situation that we have. This election is a make me, or, unmake me.

“This is where we will need the police of Ghana and the security services of Ghana to take a strong, solid, non-compromising position to make sure that our citizenry is preserved and protected; our institutions are preserved and protected; our democracy is preserved and protected,” he said.

He underscored the importance of the police taking a firm, unwavering stance to protect citizens, institutions, and democratic values.

“On this score, I will ask the police to be non-partisan as always, and not partial as always for we the clergy, and particularly for me, the Apostle-General, and the fathers of the land, we have said that we will support you in prayer, we will also be non-partial and we are praying for the welfare and the wellbeing of our nation and our democratic practice,” he added.

Expressing his spiritual support, he called upon the police to maintain their non-partisan stance and avoid partiality, reassuring them of the clergy’s commitment to pray for the nation’s welfare and democratic practice.

Additionally, Rev. Sam Korankye-Ankrah issued a caution to politicians, urging them to fulfill their promises and warning against manipulating public opinion.

He emphasized the church’s role in holding politicians accountable and ensuring transparency in governance.

“We, the church, will do business with anyone that the people choose, except that we are cautioning politicians that gone are the days that promises were made and promises were not fulfilled. This time, our eyes are very red and this time, we are going to call power to account; we are going to hold politicians accountable. What they say, they must perform because the people must not be taken for a ride anymore,” he stressed.

As Ghana prepares for the elections on December 7, 2024, with significant implications for its future leadership, the Apostle-General’s visit included a courtesy call on local chiefs in Tamale, underscoring the broader community engagement of his ministry.

Organizer of the ‘Hands Off Our Hotels’ demonstration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed his disappointment with the police for their treatment of some demonstrators.

“Let me condemn what the police did, this is a peaceful march, our people conducted themselves well so why do you fire tear gas on innocent civilians? Now we have to rush a few to the hospital?

“The Police will be held accountable if anything happens to them. They can’t take the law into their own hands and intimidate innocent citizens.”

He emphasized that the police would be held accountable for any harm caused to the demonstrators. “They cannot take the law into their own hands and intimidate innocent citizens.”

The police halted the demonstration protesting the sale of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels midway through their march on Tuesday, June 19.

Instead of reaching the agreed endpoint at Christ The King, they were stopped on the Switchback Road in Cantonments, Accra.

“Is this the Christ the King?” He questioned the Police while speaking on the New Central on TV3.

He added that some protesters had been taken to the hospital for treatment after being affected by the tear gas.

“Some of the demonstrators have been rushed to the hospital. If anything happens to any demonstrators we will hold the Police accountable,” he said.

Allegations made by Ampong targeted specific direct chiefs under Otumfuo, including those of Pekyi N1, Gyaakye, Donyina, and Asotwe, aiming to tarnish their reputations.

His actions caused confusion and discord among local leaders until his deception was exposed by kinsmen of Saamanhene Palace in Kumasi.

Confronted by the Saamanhene Palace, Ampong confessed to his crimes and renounced his false title.

DSP Kofi Sarpong hit my head with a machete to admit that I killed JB Danquah – Sexy Don Don tells court

The main suspect in the murder case of the late MP for Abuakwa North, Joseph Boakye Danquah, on February 8, 2016, has testified in an Accra High Court that he was far away from the legislator’s residence at the time of the incident.

Daniel Asiedu claimed that he was subjected to physical assault by musician DSP Kofi Sarpong in an engine room, compelling him to confess to the crime in the presence of IGP Dr. Akuffo Dampare and SP Afia Tenge.

During his defense, Mr Asiedu informed the court that on the day of the murder, he visited Agbogbloshie to engage the services of a prostitute after earning profits from selling flash drives filled with songs.

He recounted spending the night at the woman’s place after two intimate encounters and then visiting Konkonsa Bar at Agblogbloshie early in the morning for refreshments.

Upon returning to the woman’s residence, he discovered a large crowd gathered there, inquiring about his whereabouts, instigated by a pimp who turned out to be a police informant.

Mr Asiedu narrated reporting the incident to the Regional Police station after learning from his companion, Janet, that she had confronted the pimp regarding their night together.

He described being escorted to meet IGP Dampare, flanked by DSP Sarpong and DSP Afia Tenge, who questioned him about his alleged involvement in the crime.

Asiedu alleged being taken to an engine room, where DSP Kofi Sarpong attacked him with a machete and inflicted blows, compelling him to confess to the allegations made by IGP Dampare.

Under duress, Asiedu admitted to the crime when confronted again by the Police Chief.

Below are excerpts of his cross-examination:

    A. I made up my mind to report the matter at the regional police station but on my way to pick an okada the rider told me not to because he knows Mawuko‘s superior who goes by the name Adotey and that he will lead me to Adotey to report the matter to him so that he would warm Mawuko. When the okada took me to Adotey he gave me a seat and I explained him what happened and that was the first time I met Adotey who is an informant.

Adotey told me to exercise patience and that he will lead me to the regional police station to report the issue and that was the first time I went to the regional police station. When we got to the police station Adotey asked me to wait by a police officer while he goes to see the police commander. When he returned from seeing the police commander, he asked me to come with him to see the police commander so the two of us went to the police commander’s office.

    Q. Tell this court what time was this?

    A. We got to the police at about 5:25am

    Q. In your statement yesterday you mentioned Allotey and today you mentioned Adotey. Who are they?

    A. The name I mentioned yesterday is not Allotey. His name is Adotey and he is an informant. The mentioned their name to me as Dampare, ASP Kofi Sarpong and the female was Afia Tenge. I turned around and saw that Adotey had left the office and was standing outside. Officer Dampare gave me a seat in front of him and two other officers sat by each side of me.

Dampare took his phone out and decided to record me and he asked me ‘who sent you’ and I asked what was going on. He continued to ask me if one NDC man called Sorogo and one short NDC man with an Ewe name. When I was at the police station o saw on the TV that he had been arrested at his office and sent to the CID HQ. He has an Ewe name that I cannot pronounce.

ASP Sarpong took me to the Engine room and took a machete out of a fridge and hit my head with it. I was bleeding and dazed. He told me to accept whatever Dampare was telling me or else I would be killed. I stood there for a while because at that moment I couldn’t think straight. I did not answer the questions he was asking me.

    Q. When you were attacked with a machete by this gospel singer police officer and you felt dizzy and did not answer his questions, what happened after that?

    A. He stood behind me and slapped me from both sides. At that moment I knelt down and begged him that whatever he said I have said and I shall do as he had asked me.

    Q. Why did you kneel down to beg?

    A. I have not died and resurrected before so I did want to take any decision that he would regret. So, I agreed to do whatever that he asked me with the hope that I can explain and understand what they were asking from me.

He understood me and took me back to the office and sat me down. Dampare once again took out his phones and d started filming me. He mentioned those two names and asked if they were the persons who sent me? and I said yes. I was kept there from morning till about 6pm and I was moved to the BNI office at Kawukudi.

Presiding judge Lydia Osei Marfo adjourned the case to May 29 for the continuation of the witness testimony of Daniel Asiedu.

Meanwhile, Majid Adams, the sole survivor, is currently receiving medical treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The incident occurred around 8 am on April 10, 2024, when Hamdella Jibril detected a gas leak emanating from their six-kilogram gas cylinder in the kitchen.

Attempting to address the issue, Jibril moved the cylinder outside, unaware of the nearby coal pot ablaze.

Regrettably, the ignition from the coal pot triggered a powerful explosion, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

Despite the severity of the explosion, the affected family chose to bury the deceased without informing the police. It wasn’t until April 19, 2024, that an informant alerted authorities about the incident, prompting an investigation.

Upon arrival at the scene, police officials confirmed details provided by family elders, who disclosed that the deaths occurred on different dates following the explosion.

“Police proceeded to the scene and met three elders of the deceased’s family namely Mohammad Muniru Ridwan, Fuseini Wahab and Gibrine Lami, who confirmed the story.

56-year-old man receives 24-year prison sentence for defiling minor

The Tarkwa circuit court has handed down a 24-year prison sentence with hard labor to a 56-year-old farmer, Kwaku Sarfo, also known as Kantanka, for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old pupil.

Sarfo, upon his appearance before the court presided over by Hathia Ama Manu, pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

Despite Sarfo’s plea for leniency, the court dismissed his request, deeming it necessary to impose a harsh sentence to dissuade individuals like him from perpetrating such crimes against innocent girls in Tarkwa and its vicinity.

Superintendent of Police Juliana Essel-Dadzie, who led the prosecution, informed the court that the victim, a primary four pupil, lived with Sarfo, who was also her neighbor, in Anokwa within the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.

According to Essel-Dadzie, on Thursday, March 28, 2024, around 1:00 PM, the victim was sent by her parents to fetch water from a nearby stream for household purposes.

While on her way, Sarfo called the victim and entrusted her with a white margarine container to fetch water for him.

Upon returning with the water, Sarfo instructed the victim to take it to his room, followed her, locked the door, and proceeded to forcefully have sexual intercourse with her.

Afterward, Sarfo warned the victim not to disclose the incident to anyone and instructed her to return home.

The following day, the victim’s parents noticed she was bleeding from her vagina. Despite their inquiries, the victim remained silent. Subsequently, they took her to the Prestea Government Hospital for medical attention.

During her examination at the hospital, the victim disclosed her ordeal to the medical officer.

The victim’s parents promptly reported the incident to the Prestea police, who issued a medical report form for her treatment.

Sarfo attempted to evade arrest but was apprehended by the police in Prestea on Saturday, March 30, 2024.

  • ‘Akosua Kuma’ course 53 cadet list fueling conflict within Police Service

‘Akosua Kuma’ course 53 cadet list fueling conflict within Police Service

Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, is encountering resistance as he endeavors to rectify discrepancies in the 53rd Cadet Course for Senior Police Officers.

This resistance is allegedly marked by evasive tactics, notably under the leadership of embattled Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

Minister Henry Quartey, who unearthed significant irregularities in the selection process for participants in the senior officers’ course at the National Police Academy and Training School, ordered a halt back in February.

There are grave concerns that the actions of the Police Hierarchy leading up to the examination and selection of officers for the 53rd Senior Officers Course “has the potential to affect morale in the service as a whole”, part of the first paragraph of the Minister’s letter said with reference number SCR/VB 78/226/01 copied to the Chairman of the Police Service Council.

It is worth noting that similar “issues” occurred under IGP Dampare during the 51st Officer Cadet Training, which attracted the attention of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) two years ago.

In an effort to rectify the situation, the Minister, who announced a supplementary list, faces opposition from forces allegedly driven by “police higher-ups,” who resist the remedial efforts of the Ayawaso Central lawmaker.

The Minister seeks to rectify an anomaly whereby 300 officers were selected under dubious non-transparent circumstances, and another set of over 200 officers were “recommended by special arrangement” without considering their exam performance, which was supposed to be the basis for qualification, aiming for fairness for those legitimately left out.

Leading the criticism against the Minister is NDC ex Policeman Peter Toobu.

According to Mr Toobu, such announcements by the Minister are “unhealthy” and risk “tainting” what he referred to as Course 53, potentially hindering the professional development of cadets.

In a Facebook post, Mr Toobu criticized Mr Quartey, labeling him a “walking contradiction” for cautioning against inciting the public while making statements that could provoke tensions within the police force.

However, Mr Toobu has encountered fierce counterarguments on his social media page, with some allegations made against his person.

“Hon. Toobu please stop peddling the falsehood. What was in the Minister’s visit and comment? Or was that what you were doing for your party when you were in the office? I can see you are being chase by your own ghost

SMH — Is this another way to blackmail the Minister? You did same thing which got Former IGP Asante Appietu out of office. You are here again championing same blackmail agenda for someone I won’t mention here. Oh Gosh!! all these are MPs making laws for us in this country, why won’t the country retrogress ??

of all, you’ve made these BASELESS ACCUSATIONS without a single evidence to support your claims. Who in his right senses will believe you aside mentally restarted ones who apply NO logic to analyze issues. Mr. MP, if this is the strategy of your party just to make the Minister unpopular, then you are lost in the sea. I don’t blame you. I blame someone behind all these blackmail. But lemme tell you, the Minister is well focused on his mandates, these open blackmail will not wash because the Minister is well focused.

“You can bring your evidence so that we analyze it. Until then, no one takes you serious. We rather see you as an agent for blackmail,” he added.

NDC communications team member was killed by wife – Police

The spouse of the deceased member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team has confessed to the killing of her husband.

According to police sources, the deceased’s wife has admitted to stabbing her husband, although she claims it was not with the intention to kill.

Osei Yaw Akoto was discovered in a pool of blood at his residence and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the Mampong Government Hospital.

The couple, along with their three children, had been residing in a three-bedroom house in Kofi Sarpong, a suburb of Mampong in the Ashanti Region, for nearly a year.

Local residents have revealed that the couple had been experiencing frequent conflicts and arguments lately.

“I often hear them fighting on top of their voice whenever I’m passing by. The husband is the quiet type when he is not drunk, but when he is intoxicated – something he often does – he insults and beats the wife. Though this is known to us, I couldn’t believe it when I heard this morning that Abigail had stabbed Akoto to death. It’s really shocking”, a resident, Ama Nsiah disclosed.

“The party is very shocked, and we are in a dark moment as at now. Akoto was a branch youth organiser and a communication team member, and he worked tirelessly for the party. We were even expecting him to deliver more as we approach the December 7 elections, but he left us painfully”, Mampong NDC Constituency Secretary, Hudu Yahaya Mumuni said.

At the Mampong Constituency office of the National Democratic Congress, party members and executives are grappling with the sudden loss of their colleague, who appeared lively just the previous night.

They praised Akoto’s dedication to party activities in the Constituency.

The Mampong Police have initiated an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the stabbing and death of the 40-year-old.

Meanwhile, the wife, Abigail, remains in police custody, and Akoto’s body has been transferred to the morgue at the Mampong Government Hospital for autopsy.
