  • Several passengers injured in near-fatal crash at Nsawam

    About twenty-three (23) persons are seriously injured in multiple accidents on the Nsawam stretch of the Accra to Kumasi Highways.

    The near-fatal multiple vehicle collision involved three Vehicles a Sprinter Bus, Hyundai10 and a Toyota Corolla occurred Tuesday, January 7, 2020.

    All the injured victims including drivers of the vehicles were rushed to Nsawam Government Hospital but those in critical conditions were expected to be referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for advanced treatment.

    One dead, several injured in a fatal accident at Nkawkaw

    The multiple-vehicle crash occurred when the speeding Sprinter Bus fully loaded with passengers hit the back of the Hyundai10 which had slowed down on a speed ramp on the Adoagyiri bypass adjacent the new mortuary causing the Sprinter Bus to somersault.

    The Toyota saloon Car which was following the Sprinter Bus also rammed into it.

    A Deputy Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in Nsawam, Appiah Peter, explained to Starr News that, the “three Cars all heading towards Accra were involved in the accident.

    “The Sprinter Bus fully loaded with passengers hit the back of the H10 then the Toyota Saloon also crashed into the Sprinter. All the Passengers seriously injured have been sent to Nsawam Government Hospital but some will be referred to Koforidua and Korle Bu Teaching Hospitals”

    The Nsawam Police has commenced investigations into the accident.

  • Nursing trainee, seven other Ghanaian traders reportedly die in Burkina Faso car crash

    A male nursing trainee, identified only as David, and seven other Ghanaian tomato traders have died in Burkina Faso’s town of Nobere after a truck on which they were traveling got involved in a fatal accident morning of Wednesday, our Upper East Regional Correspondent Senyalah Castro reports.

    The accident claimed the life of the trainee nurse and the other victims after one of the front tyre of their vehicle burst as they negotiated a curve in the town, sources said.

    The truck, which was fully loaded with crates of tomatoes, was making a return journey from Burkina Faso, where Ghanaian traders mostly go to buy the commodity when the accident happened.

    The vehicle somersaulted several times in the process leading to the death of six of the occupants on the spot.

    Two of the injured later died on the way as they were being transported to the hospital, bringing the total death toll to 8 people – six women and two men.

    One feared dead in Christmas eve accident at Awoshie

    Others occupants of the vehicle, numbering about 6, sustained various degrees of injuries and have since been admitted at the Paga district health centre and the War Memorial Hospital in Navrongo for medical attention.

    Interment for the deceased nurse trainer, it is gathered, has been done by the family and the rest of the dead bodies sent to the hospital’s morgue for preservation.

  • Ohene Nkwanta accident: 24 discharged, 21 others on admission

    Twenty-one people, including five in critical condition, remain on admission after two coaches collided head-on at Ohene Nkwanta on the Kumasi-Accra road, on Boxing Day.

    Some 24 others who were on admission at three different health facilities have been discharged.

    Apart from the five said to have sustained life-threatening injuries who are on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, the rest are at Stewards Hospital, Juaso and the Konongo Government Hospital.

    Konongo Government Hospital has eight patients, including a family of four whilst the Juaso Government Hospital and Stewards Hospital have six and two respectively.

    Meanwhile, police have appealed to the public to help identify the victims who perished in that crash.

    Out of seven people who died, including a mother and her three-month-old daughter, only the driver of the VVIP bus has been identified.

    The accident involved a VVIP and an OA commercial buses with registration numbers GT 6082-18 and GT 4913-14, respectively.

  • 6 killed in Bole car crash

    Six persons including a minor, have lost their lives in a ghastly car crash at Mankuma, a village in the Bole District of the Savannah Region.

    The crash involved a minibus and Sprinter. Other passengers sustained various degrees of injuries.

  • Seven killed in Konogo-Kumasi Highway accident

    Seven persons have died in an accident involving an OA and VVIP bus on the Konongo-Kumasi Highway.

    According to the Police, the Kumasi bound OA bus, with registration number GT4913-14 made a wrongful overtaking, resulting in a head-on collision with the Accra bound VVIP bus, registration number GT5052-18.

    In an interview with Citi News, the Motor Traffic and Transport (MTTD) police commander for the area, DSP Steven Paa Yeboah said the injured have been admitted at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Yawkwei Government Hospital.

    “At 11:30 I received a call that there is an accident on the Konongo-Kumasi Highway. I rushed there with my men and upon arrival, we saw two buses one OA and one VIP bus in the middle of the road blocking traffic. So we moved the injured persons to the hospital whilst we tried to take out those who were trapped in the buses. On the spot, we recorded five deaths and two died later at the hospital.”

  • Six perish in accident involving VVIP and OA buses

    Six persons died Thursday morning in an accident involving VVIP and OA commercial buses with registration numbers GT 6082-18 and GT 4913-14 respectively.

    The incident which occurred on the Odumasi-Konongo-Kumasi road also had several travellers sustaining various degrees of injuries, Isaac Amoako, Adom FM/TV reporter in Asante Akyem recounted.

  • Three die in Christmas Day morning accident

    Three people died on the spot while several others sustained injuries in the morning of Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25, 2019, when two minibuses in which they were travelling collided head-on at Mankuma in the Bole District of the Savannah Region.

    The accident that occurred around 5.40 am on Wednesday involved a Ssangyoung minibus travelling from Sawla with the Sprinter bus coming from the Bole end of the road.

    The Savannah Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Enoch Adutwum Bediako confirmed the accident to Graphic Online when contacted.

    He said some of the injured persons were sent to the Bole Government Hospital while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the same hospital.

    He said the cause of the accident was not immediately known and that investigation were underway to establish the cause.

  • 3 dead in crash near Bole

    Three persons died on the spot when a Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus collided head-on with another minibus on Christmas Day, at Mankuma on the Bole-Sawla highway in the Savannah Region.

    Many other victims said to be critical condition, are receiving treatment at the Bole District Hospital.

    Details are sketchy but AdomNews’ correspondent, Rebecca Natomah reported that the accident happened between 5.30 – 6 am.

    Christmas eve crash

    On Christmas eve, two persons died in an accident at Abaam Okyinso in the Kwaebibirem municipality in the Eastern Region, after the vehicle they were travelling in, in the evening, collided with a Hyundai H100 bus.

    According to an eye witness, Abrefa Busia, the timely intervention of residents and passers-by minutes after the incident helped to save several other victims who had sustained various degrees of injuries.

    They are currently receiving treatment at the Kade Hospital.

    In a related development, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has cautioned drivers against unnecessary speeding as visibility is likely to be poor in most parts of the country due to the onset of the Harmattan.

    Most parts in the south of the country will experience misty and fog patches while “dry and slightly hazy conditions will be observed as the day progresses,” the agency predicted for Saturday.

    “The northern sector and the transition,” it added.

  • Six dead in accident at Kobre, 10 others injured

    Six out of 16 persons who were on board a minibus with registration number AS 3976-18, travelling from Kumasi to Yeji, have lost their lives in a gory accident at Kobre.

    The accident occurred seven kilometres to Yeji in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region.

    The injured persons are currently receiving treatment at the St Matthias Hospital at Yeji.

    Speaking to Citi News, a doctor at the St. Mattias Hospital, Dr. Lukeman Ahmed said the injured persons had been stabilised.

    “Around 3 to 4pm on Sunday afternoon, we had a call that there was an accident around the Kobre Yeji stretch. We went there and brought them to the emergency centre. About six of them were dead, while the rest are managing at the emergency ward. Most of them are having head injuries, some with fractures and suspected chest injuries. Most of those who are dead suffered from severe head injuries and chest injuries,” he said.

    “So far, we have managed to stabilize those in the emergency ward. They are currently treating those with severe lacerations. There is one woman who needs a blood transfusion and oxygen. We are hoping she will pull through,” he added.

    Road Safety

    With few days to the start of the Christmas festivities, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and other stakeholders have called on Ghanaians especially drivers to ensure an accident-free festive season by driving carefully.

    Over the years, there has been a hike in road crashes during Christmas festivities.

    Although this year has seen a slight decrease in road fatalities, the Assembly has noted that it is committed to reducing it to the barest minimum.

  • Accident victims carried in pickup to hospital as no ambulance exist

    At least eleven passengers including students going on vacation are fighting for their lives at Atua Government Hospital and St.Martins Depore Hospital in Odumase after a vehicle they were on board was involved in a near-fatal accident.

    The absence of functioning ambulance in the entire Lower Manya Krobo Municipality worsened the health conditions of the victims rescued from the vehicle which had landed in a ditch. The injured victims were parked in pickup vehicle and Taxis to the respective Hospitals without any emergency first aid care.

    The accident vehicle Toyota Hiace with registration Number GR 9332 Z onboard with 15 passengers was from Kumasi heading towards Ho in the Volta Region on Friday around 5:30pm.

    According to 47-year-old victim, Kojo Aboagye, the vehicle stalled while descending the sharp curve to the notorious Asitey junction stretch of the Odumase to Otorkpolu Highway, the driver lost control of the steering wheel and run into the ditch.

    It took the efforts of locals who were later joined by the Police to rescue the passengers trapped in the vehicle with serious injuries.

    Eleven( 11 ) victims including students are receiving treatment the St. Martins De Pores Hospital, the remaining 4 are at the emergency unit of the Atua Government Hospitals.

    The lack of functioning ambulances in the entire Krobo enclave is a worry to residents.

    Meanwhile, there is an increasing public outcry against Government to release the first batch of 96 ambulances parked at the State House in Accra for months awaiting the arrival of 176 others before distribution to all 275 constituencies for political expediency.

    Whereas the Minister for Special Initiatives and Development claims the ambulances are waiting to be installed with trackers before distribution, President Akufo Addo at a recent media encounter said he halted the distribution to ensure the arrival of the rest of the fleet for even distribution to avoid accusation of discrimination.

    Th Eastern region is notorious for high rate of road accidents. A total of 722 accident cases were recorded in the region from January to October this year. Out of this 1062 were as a result of vehicle crashes, 188 knockdowns, 228 were reported dead with 1,288 injuries.

  • Gory accident leads to death of motor rider on Ofankor-Pokuase road

    A motor rider lost his life Thursday morning on the Ofankor-Pokuase road when he tried to avoid a van ahead of him.

    The deceased, who is yet to be identified, was riding from the Achimota road headed towards the Pokuase stretch when the incident occurred.

    Narrating the incident to Andy Dosty on Hitz FM, an eyewitness said a trotro driver parked on the main road to pick a passenger but in a bid to prevent crashing into it, the driver of the van he (the eyewitness) was travelling in, which was behind the trotro, hit the brake without knowing there was a motor bike behind him.

    In an attempt to swerve the van, the motor rider met his untimely death.

    “There was this big truck with cement that was on the left, that was the inner lane of the road. Immediately the van hit a brake all that I saw was that the motor rider went straight under the truck (loaded) with the cement which have about three wheels in the back and as I speak to you the guy is dead.”

    He added that the deceased went through all three back tyres of the truck.

    At the time of narrating the incident, the body of the deceased was still lying on the road.

  • 38 injured in road accident at Ayi Mensah

    At least 38 people narrowly escaped death but sustained minor injuries when a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus rammed into five other vehicles at the Ayi Mensah Police tollbooth, on the Adentan-Aburi Highway, on Saturday.

    The bus with registration number GS 3251-12, conveying 30 passengers from Aburi to Accra, was descending the Aburi Mountains when the brakes failed, crashing into the other vehicles.

    Aside, the three saloon cars and a mini Kia truck that were partly damaged, the fifth vehicle, a KIA truck with registration number GR 9013-17, loaded with three giant polytanks full of water, had its bucket dislodged from the frame of the vehicle with the water spilling.

    The accident, which happened at about 2:30 pm sent motorists and hawkers close to the tollbooth running for their lives.

    When the Ghanaian Times arrived at the scene around 4:00 pm, some of the panic onlookers were discussing the miraculous escape of the passengers, while the Ayi Mensah Police were also there on time to assist in dislodging the Metro Mass Transit bus that was entangled with the truck due to the impact of the hit.

    Though the police declined to comment on the accident, the driver of the bus, Isaac Ampiah, told the Ghanaian Times that he left Aburi without any fault on the vehicle.

    According to him, after descending the Peduase Lodge in a curve, he realised the brakes had ceased working.

    Mr Ampiah said he did his best avoid running into oncoming vehicles.

    “About 300 metres to the tool both, I saw the mounting traffic and I realised if I tried to use the route, the casualties would be a national disaster and I had to veer off the normal lane and took the opposite lane, which was not that busy”, He told the Ghanaian Times.

    Mr Ampiah said stated that the KIA truck loaded with polytanks full of water saved the situation when the bus got stocked to the truck.

    The driver of the KIA truck, Jerry Ayorkor, said he was about to pay for his ticket at the toll booth when he saw the bus heading in his direction.

    He said the street hawkers raised the alarm, and he took to his heels, abandoning his vehicle, else he would have died in the head on collision.

    Ms Afi Mawuli, an eye witness, said she and others raised the alarm when they realised that the movement of the bus was not normal.

    All vehicles involved in the accident have been towed to the Ayi Mensah District Police station.

  • MMT bus driver’s brakes fail whilst descending Aburi Mountain

    Scores of people suffered various injuries at the Ayi Mensah toll booth area in Greater Accra on Saturday afternoon, when the brakes of a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus traveling from Aburi towards Accra failed and rammed into several vehicles. The accident happened around 3 pm.

    The MMT bus as of the time of the accident had 30 passengers on board who were returning to Accra after attending a funeral at Aburi in the Eastern Region. The driver of the bus, Isaac Ampiah who escaped unhurt, told Graphic Online that, upon reaching a section of the mountains while descending, the brakes of the bus failed.

    And to avoid falling into a ditch, and running into hawkers and other people beside the road, he controlled the steering wheel until he rammed into about three cars ahead of him to reduce the speed before colliding with six others at the toll booth area.

    One of the tollbooth attendants told Graphic Online that he was collecting the tolls, and all that he saw was the bus quickly passing and crushing into the cars.

    A cloth seller said on seeing the bus run into the vehicles, some of the hawkers in the area took to their heels. The injured were taken to the hospital. The damaged vehicles were later towed to the Adentan police station.

  • Pentecost School Bus conductor crashed to death

    A conductor in a School Bus belonging to Pentecost Preparatory School in Koforidua was crashed to death while attempting to jump on the Bus with registration number 2723 -14.

    The incident occured Thursday around 4 pm in Koforidua.

    The deceased identified as Ofori Atta,55, doubled as a Librarian in the school.

    As a conductor ,the late Ofori Atta was responsible for assisting Schoolchildren onboard the bus to safely alight and cross roads to their respective homes .

    On the fateful day, deceased however, missed his steps while attempting to jump on the moving vehicle to clench onto a metal bar at the passengers gate after assisting a pupil to cross safely at Agartha Market road.

    He reportedly hit the side of the bus with is body frame and crashed onto the tarred road. The Bus run over his legs while on the ground with severe fracture to his head killing him on the spot.

    The ancident attracted scores of people to the scene. His lifeless body was removed by the Police and deposited at the morgue.

    The Bus driver is assisting Police in investigation.

    Some parents claimed their children were traumatised by the inciednt and could not eat at home.

  • Rear-end collision involving multiple cars injures hawkers at Dzowulu Junction; one feared dead

    Some commuters and street hawkers along the N1 highway at the Dzorwulu junction faced an ill fate Tuesday morning when a truck loaded with cement blocks rammed into them.

    The accident which involves about four cars has rendered dozens injured while one street hawker is feared dead.

    According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the truck with registration number GT 9185 18 lost control of the brakes and plunged into a Fiesta Royale-branded mini van, a blue sprinter with the registration number GT 3466 14 and another mini van.

    They explained that the driver of the truck who fortunately was not affected took to his heels after the incident.

    As at 6:47 am, only officials from the Fiesta Royale Hotel and an MTTD officer were present at the scene.

    Several items belonging to street hawkers were destroyed but as at the time, traffic flow was not affected.

    Meanwhile, injured persons have since been transported for medical attention.

  • Pickup runs over 45-year-old woman

    A 45-year-old woman has met her untimely death after being run over by a Nissan Navara pickup on Saturday afternoon, MyNewsGh.com has confirmed.

    Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Kofi Odro Amponsah, the Wenchi Divisional Commander of the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service confirmed the incident.

    According to DSP, Mr Kofi Odro Amponsah it happened near the Akrobi barrier on the Wenchi-Nsawkaw road at about 2 pm on Saturday, December 7, 2019.

    He disclosed that the body of the deceased identified as Attaa Wusuaa has been deposited at Wenchi Methodist Hospital morgue pending autopsy.

    Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle, one Nana Kwaku Gyan 48 is in police custody assisting them in investigations as the police chief disclosed that the circumstances surrounding the accident are still being investigated by his outfit.

  • Chief’s body dismembered in fatal road accident

    A Chief’s body has been dismembered in a fatal road accident on the Kasoa-Cape Coast road Saturday.

    Abokomanhene of Awutu Awin-taso in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region, Nai Akufu, was crushed to death by a Sprinter Benz Bus, whose driver refused to stop, Seth Ankomah Adjei, Adom News  Central Regional Correspondent has reported.

  • Driver dies after being trapped under accident car for 8 hours

    A driver has been confirmed dead in a fatal accident involving a container Truck transporting alcoholic beverages belonging to Joy Dadi company on the Apirede to Somanya road in the Eastern Region.

    Two others sustained various degrees of injuries.

    The deceased, identified as Samuel Adu Gyan, 28, was trapped under the vehicle for eight hours before his body was removed. The injured both sales personal are Nordjoe Michael and Iddrisu Sulemana.

    Former trotro driver turns valedictorian

    The accident occurred on Tuesday November 19, 2019 at about 1.30pm.

    According to the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, on reaching a sharp curve, the deceased driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a valley on the near side of the road.

    The two sales personnel escaped with minor injuries but deceased got trapped under the vehicle and died on the spot.

    Police personnel from Adukrom Police Station and Ghana National Fire Service from Mampong Akuapem arrived at the scene with fire engine but could not retrieve the trapped driver. The fire engine reportedly nearly caught fire in the process.

    Uber, Bolt cars to get unique stickers, drivers to pay GH¢60 annual fees

    A Towing truck with registration number GE 246-12 brought later from Koforidua saved the day by removing the accident vehicle from the deceased by 8:28pm.

    The body of the deceased has been deposited at Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

  • Bus carrying passengers catches fire

    Dozens of Passengers had a lucky escape Monday night after their moving bus caught fire at Beposo-Kyekyewere, near Teacher Mante along the Suhum-Nsawam stretch of the Accra to Kumasi Highways.

    The fully loaded Hyundai bus with registration number GN 8298 15 heading towards the Suhum direction from Accra caught fire causing chaotic exit by passengers onboard.

    Although the Passengers and the driver escaped unhurt before the bus was eventually consumed with the fire, they were reportedly terribly traumatized.

    According to reports, it took personnel of Ghana National Fire Service from Nsawam some 25 minutes to douse the inferno but the bus was completely burnt beyond recognition.

    The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Sergeant Francis Gomado told Starr News the Police and Fire Service Officials are jointly investigating the cause of the fire. He however appealed to the traumatized driver and the passengers who fled the scene before Police arrival to return to assist with the investigation.

  • Gory crash kills 7

    Seven people are feared dead while others have sustained life-threatening injuries after a gory vehicular crash.

    The bloody accident was said to have happened at a portion in-between Ejisu and Konongo on the Kumasi-Accra highway on Friday afternoon.

    The bodies of the dead have since been deposited at the morgue of a medical facility at Juaben for autopsy.

    1,500 lives lost to road accidents in 9 months

    This was after a bus from Accra to Kumasi collided head-on with another bus, which was from the opposite direction to Accra.

    Eyewitnesses accused the driver of the bus from Kumasi of committing a blunder that led to the deadly crash.

    The offending driver, upon reaching Kubease, tried to do wrong overtaking and in the process collided head-on with the oncoming bus.

    According to eyewitnesses, the impact of the collision was so heavy that seven people died instantly while some of the passengers suffered serious injuries.

  • 7 killed as STC bus rams into Imperial Express at Ejisu-Konongo

    At least seven people have died with 40 others injured in an accident at Ejisu-Konongo on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

    The accident occurred when a Kumasi-bound STC bus with registration number GR 2565 with 17 passengers collided with a Temsa Imperial Express bus numbered GE 5959-19 at the Kubease portion of the road. The incident occurred on Friday.

  • 4 dead after vehicles crash on Adidome-Sogakofe road

    Four persons are reported dead while three others are believed to have sustained various degrees of injuries in a vehicular accident on the Adidome Sogakofe Road in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region.

    The accident which occurred at about 8:40 am on Friday, November 1, 2019, left the two vehicles damaged beyond repairs.

    An eyewitness, Dennis Kpoha, who recounted the incident to DGN Online, said the accident was caused by a sack that fell off another vehicle.

    The vehicle which had the sack was not involved in the accident.

    He said “the accident was caused by this sack (pointing to an off-white sack).”

    He explained that the sack had fallen of the said vehicle which drew the attention of the Ho Sogakofe bound Pontiac Vibe vehicle with registration number, GE-5684-16.

    He said the Pontiac driver slowed on nearing the sack and veered off its lane (Adidome-Sogakofe side) and packed on the opposite lane (Sogakofe-Adidome side) to pick the sack.

    The other vehicle, Toyota Carina with registration number, GW- 5171-Z, which was moving in its lane on the Sogokefe-Adidome side crashed into the Pontiac which is believed to have wrongly packed on that side of the road.

    The Toyota vehicle fell into a nearby bush.

    The drivers of the two vehicles died instantly together with two other passengers.

    Dennis says two of the injured had been rushed to a nearby hospital.

    As at the time DGN Online got to the scene, a rescue team from the Ghana Fire Service had arrived to help retrieve the bodies from the mangled vehicles.

    The accident attracted lots of onlookers; several of whom were wailing while others assisted the rescue team to retrieve the corpses from the mangled vehicles.

  • Accident deaths drop by 7.6%

    Efforts by stakeholders to reduce the increasing carnage on the roads have started showing positive results as the number of commuters killed in road traffic accidents between January and September 2019 has dropped by 7.6%.

    1,580 killed in 9 months of 2019

    The deaths reduced from 1,710 between January and September in 2018 to 1,580 during the same period this year.

    1,200 males killed in 9 months of 2019

    Data compiled by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of Ghana Police Service revealed that the number of males that died in the first nine months of this year amounted to 1,200.

    380 females killed in 9 months of 2019

    On the other hand, the number of females that died in accidents between January and September 2019 ?was 380?.

    154 males below 18 years killed

    According to the data, males below 18 years who died in road traffic accidents between January and September 2019 was 154.

    1,046 males above 18 years killed

    In the same vein, the total number of males above 18 years who lost their lives was 1,046.

    283 females above 18 years killed

    On the other hand, 283 females above 18 years died in fatal accidents in the first nine months of this year.

    97 females below 18 years killed

    However, 97 females below 18 years died in road traffic accidents between January and September this year.

    17.47% drop in pedestrians killed

    Similarly, the number of pedestrians killed also recorded 17.47% reduction in the first nine months of 2019.

    489 pedestrians killed

    It also dropped from 565 between January and September last year to 489 this year.

    1,448 pedestrians injured

    During the nine months period, the number of pedestrians injured amounted to 1,448.

    Drop in pedestrian knockdowns

    The total number of pedestrian knockdowns in the first three quarters of 2019 was 1,937 compared to a higher figure of 2,892 during the same period last year.

    2.25% increase in persons injured

    The data shows 2.25% increase in the number of commuters injured in the first nine months of 2019 rising from 9,973 last year to 10,197 this year.

    0.94% increase in vehicles involved in accidents

    Between January and September this year, the total number of vehicles involved in accidents rose slightly by 0.94% from 16,281 last year to 16,434 this year.

    0.88% drop in commercial vehicles involved in accidents

    The number of commercial vehicles involved in accidents also recorded 0.88% decrease, dropping from 6,328 last year to 6,272 this year.

    0.37% increase in private vehicles involved in accidents

    According to the data, accidents involving private vehicles also went up in the first three quarters of this year by 0.37%, rising from 7,102 last year to 7,138 this year.

    10,240 reported cases

    The total number of reported accidents also rose from 10,051 last year to 10,240 this year, representing a marginal 1.88% increase.

    The break of reported cases are; fatal -1,386, serious 3,222 and minor- 5,632.

  • 16 killed in gory accidents over the weekend

    Two separate deadly road accidents have claimed the lives of a total of 16 people.

    The first accident claimed 10 lives at Gomoa Odumasi on the Kasoa-Winneba highway in the Central Region on Saturday, while the second accident cut short the lives of six people on Sunday morning at Akyem-Nsutam, near Bunso Junction on the Accra-Kumasi highway in the Eastern Region.

    The vehicles involved were said to be Benz Sprinter passenger buses and preliminary police reports in both accidents had revealed that excessive speeding coupled with unlawful overtaking caused both accidents.

    In the Gomoa Odumasi incident, DAILY GUIDE learnt that it was a head-on collision involving the Sprinter bus with registration WR-211-W travelling from Accra to Cape Coast and an articulated truck in the opposite direction.

    According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the Sprinter bus driver was allegedly overtaking another car resulting in a heavy collision.

    Apart from the deaths, other passengers sustained various degrees of injury, and have since been sent to Apam Catholic Hospital, Winneba Trauma and Specialist Centre, as well as Mankessim Government Hospital.

    Bunso

    In the Eastern Region accident, six persons were confirmed dead leaving 12 others injured.

    According to the reports, the accident occurred when a Benz Sprinter bus with registration AW 22114 from Accra to Kumasi route collided head-on with a fully packed cement truck also with registration number GE 146512 from Kumasi to Accra.

    DAILY GUIDE learnt the Sprinter bus was said to be speeding and in an attempt to overtake other vehicles it collided with the cement truck.

    The victims were rushed to the Kyebi Government Hospital and others to Osiem, Hawa Memorial Hospital, for treatment.

    The Sprinter driver later claimed he had a burst tyre and lost control. The cement truck driver is also said to be alive.

    Unfortunately, a coconut seller was also hurt when the cement truck skidded off the road to hit him.

  • 6 Killed at Bunso junction

    Six Persons have been confirmed dead, with 12 others injured in a dawn crash at Akyem Nsutam near Bunso Junction on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

    According to reports, the gory accident occurred when a white sprinter bus with registration number AW 221 14 travelling from Accra to Kumasi collided head-on with a cement truck also with registration number GE 1465 12 from Kumasi to Accra.

    An eyewitness told DGN Online that the sprinter bus was overspeeding.

    The eyewitness said the bus tried to overtake other vehicles and unfortunately ended up colliding head-on with the truck.

    Six persons in the Sprinter bus, DGN Online gathered, died on the spot.

    The 12 injured passengers were rushed to the Kyebi Government hospital and Osiem, Hawa Memorial hospital for treatment.

  • Speeding driver kills 4 school children

    Four children have been killed by a speeding driver at Egya No. 2, a suburb of Anomabo, a community along the Cape-Coast-Accra Highway.

    One other child, according to eyewitnesses is in a critical condition at the Saltpond Hospital.

    The children were on their way home from school on Tuesday afternoon when the accident occurred as they crossed the road.

    The driver of the Hyundai 4×4 vehicle has been arrested and is currently in the Saltpond Police custody.

    But residents of the area are incensed. In their anger, they blocked the Anomabo section of the Highway in protest of the killings as they claim the accident is the second in a week.

    They claim that another driver knocked and killed seven people on the same stretch Monday.

    According to them, many requests for speed ramps to be constructed on that portion of the road have fallen on deaf ears.

    Police, however, managed to clear the road for traffic to flow and the driver will be put before court today.

  • One feared dead in accident in Kumasi, six others in critical condition

    One person is feared dead and six others in critical condition after a vehicle rammed into some traders at Roman Hill in Kumasi.

    The incident happened at about 10:30 am on Monday when the driver of a mini Urvan bus with registration number AS 6403-Y lost control his steering wheel.

    The Station Officer at the Manhyia Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department, Chief Inspector Bernard Ngoah who was at the scene of the incident confirmed the incident to Citi News.

    Dozens feared dead in DR Congo boat accident

    The victims, mostly traders were selling along portions of the streets when the incident happened.

    They were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital(KATH) for treatment.

    “We had a distress call from the police information room that there was an accident at Roman Hill, so I rushed there together with other investigators. When got there it was true the incident happened. We gathered that some people were pushing the vehicle when the driver lost control and ran into the traders who were trading along the streets. We initially realized that six persons sustained injuries, but the other victim who was trapped under the vehicle was later rescued and taken to the hospital”, he explained

    The driver of the vehicle who also sustained injuries has been discharged from the hospital and now in police custody.

    Police officers said they have begun investigations into the incident.

    Police also indicated that the vehicle will be taken to the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) for technical examination to ascertain claims made by the driver on the cause of the accident.

  • DCE in car crash hours after campaign manager dies in accident

    The District Chief Executive for Upper West Akyem, Eugene Sackey, has been hospitalised after he was involved in a near-fatal accident on the Suhum to Nsawam Stretch of the Accra to Kumasi Highway.

    The accident occurred Friday, September 20, 2019. The official vehicle of the DCE collided head-on with a speeding commercial vehicle.

    The DCE also contesting the Primaries of the ruling New Patriotic Party in the area is currently on admission at GraceVille Medical Center.

    An aide to the DCE, Jeffrey Ewusi William confirmed the accident to Starr News.

    According to him, the DCE is recuperating.

    The accident comes at the back of a fatal motorbike accident which led to the death of his campaign manager -Alfred Koranteng Thursday.

    The DCE recently filled his nomination to seek for reelection as Parliamentary Candidate for the third time in the Constituency, which has been occupied by NDC since 1992.

    In 2012, Eugene Sackey was defeated by then-incumbent Member of Parliament Joseph Sam Amankwanor by some 3,100 votes. Sackey, however, closed the gap to about 400 in the 2016 parliamentary and presidential election.

    The DCE is therefore hopeful of winning the seat for the NPP in 2020 if given the nod as Parliamentary Candidate for the third time.
