Dansoman, Weija, Lapaz, Achimota, others to be affected as GWL shuts down Treatment Plant for today

Several areas in the country’s capital will observe a disruption in the supply of water by the Ghana Water Limited (GWL).

This is due to the closure of the Weija Treatment Plant, which would allow engineers of the GWL to undertake repair work on major pipelines supplying water to the western parts of Accra.

The affected areas include Korle-Bu, Dansoman, Mamprobi, parts of Weija, Gbawe, Malam, Anyaa, Kwashieman, Ablekuma, and Darkuman.

The others are Kaneshie, Tesano, Odorkor, Sowutuom, Lapaz, parts of Achimota, North Industrial Area, and adjoining communities.

The shutdown, which began at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, is expected to last until 5:00 p.m.

Management of GWL has assured that its engineers are on site working hard to ensure that the work is completed on schedule.”

It has apologised to the general public and the residents in the areas affected for the inconvenience caused.

Residents and businesses in the affected areas are advised to make alternative water arrangements during the repair period.

It is unknown whether the notice issued by the GWL on July 2 was received on time by the residents.

Those who may have gotten the notice late might not be able to put in the necessary measures to ensure they access water, taking into consideration financial constraints.

This means some households and business will experience water shortages and may not be able to undertake their day-to-day activities.

  • Downpour on Thursday causes flooding in parts of Accra

Downpour on Thursday causes flooding in parts of Accra

A downpour on the evening of Thursday, March 13, led to severe flooding along the Ofankor Barrier stretch of the N1 Highway in Accra.

Within hours, rising water levels left motorists stuck in gridlocked traffic and forced pedestrians to abandon their journeys.

The flooding caused major disruptions, with traffic backing up from the Achimota Old Station to Tantra Hill.

Desperate to escape the rising waters, some drivers near the Neoplan Station attempted to reverse and divert onto outer lanes leading to Taifa. However, many vehicles were either trapped or completely submerged, making movement impossible.

Other parts of Accra, including Shiashie, also experienced intense flooding. Streets became rivers, with water rushing into homes and businesses, further exposing the city’s drainage challenges. Commuters traveling towards Amasaman, Pokuase, and other areas in the Greater Accra Region found themselves stuck in motionless traffic as buses, private vehicles, and trotros struggled to navigate the submerged roads.

For pedestrians, the situation was just as dire. Some were left stranded as water levels became dangerously high, forcing them to wait for the floodwaters to subside before continuing their journeys.

Ironically, this disaster unfolded just two days after the government’s Anti-Flood Taskforce conducted an aerial inspection of Accra’s flood-prone areas on March 11.

Their assessment pointed to choked drains, illegal structures on waterways, and unregulated construction as key factors behind the city’s persistent flooding.

They had pledged to address these issues ahead of the peak rainy season, yet Thursday’s events highlighted the urgent need for immediate action.

Indiscipline on roads will no longer be tolerated – NRSA Director warns

Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has pledged to clamp down on road indiscipline by rigorously enforcing traffic laws to reduce accidents.

His commitment comes in response to a fatal hit-and-run accident on the Achimota Highway on March 9, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of two former Achimota School students.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on March 10, Amaliba expressed deep concern over the increasing disregard for road safety regulations by both pedestrians and drivers.

He identified reckless behavior among road users as a major contributor to road crashes and assured the public that stringent actions would be taken against offenders.

“Since assuming office at NRSA, I have observed that driver and pedestrian misconduct are the two leading causes of accidents. Addressing these issues will bring significant improvements in road safety,” he stated.

To enhance safety measures, he revealed that NRSA will collaborate with the media to drive public awareness and promote discipline on the roads.

“In the coming days, we will see more order on our roads. A nationwide campaign featuring a well-known Ghanaian figure will soon be launched to encourage responsible road use,” he announced.

Additionally, Amaliba indicated that NRSA is preparing to roll out an extensive public education initiative to instill discipline and reduce road violations across the country.

“When I took over the NRSA, I realised there were two main causes of road crashes; driver and pedestrian indiscipline, and so if we are able to curb these two, we will make a lot of headway,” he said.

At the time of the incident, Davida and Lilian—both members of the Old Achimotan Association (OAA24) and former residents of Stopford House—were on their way back to the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) after attending a bonfire event at Achimota School. The accident occurred along the Achimota Highway.

Davida’s aunt, Alice Safoa, recounted the series of events that led to the driver’s arrest.

“The incident occurred around 10:30. According to the police, the driver was arrested after a chase. However, the hospital staff revealed that the driver was seeking refuge, fearing an attack by eyewitnesses. Following his arrest, he was taken to the hospital due to ill health but has since recovered and been returned to the police cells.”

Lilian’s close friend, Charlotte Otchere, reflected on the special memories they created together.

“She was my classmate and my very good friend. We were in the same class and sat almost close to each other. We had our bad days, but we were okay before we completed,” she said.

Court remands suspect for Allegedly stealing car from rental company

Andrew Amoah Ampaw, aged 33, has been remanded into police custody by the Achimota Circuit Court on charges of allegedly stealing a Toyota Corolla valued at GH¢100,000 from a car rental agency in Accra.

According to reports, Ampaw rented the vehicle for a five-day period before allegedly transferring it to someone he owed money to.

Facing charges of theft, Ampaw pleaded not guilty before Judge Isaac Addo.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court again on March 21.

The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Ahiale, disclosed that both the complainant, Aaron Kofi Mensah, and the accused are businesspersons based in Accra.

ASP Ahiale informed the court that on February 29 of this year, the complainant filed a report at the Legon Police Station, stating that on January 29, 2024, he received a request from a friend and car rental business owner (a witness in the case) to rent a Toyota vehicle to Ampaw for five days.

Subsequently, the complainant handed over his Toyota Corolla, registered under CR 106-21, to Ampaw after the latter paid the five-day rental fee.

However, upon the expiration of the rental period, Ampaw allegedly failed to return the vehicle to the complainant or extend the rental agreement.

The prosecution further alleged that Ampaw disabled the vehicle’s tracking device, making it challenging for the complainant to retrieve the car.

Subsequently, it was discovered that Ampaw had been arrested by the Legon District CID for a similar offense.

During the investigation, Ampaw admitted to renting the vehicle and giving it to someone he owed money to, intending to return it by the end of February 2024, once he had settled his debt with the individual.

However, Ampaw claimed he couldn’t provide the police with the person’s whereabouts as he was unaware of their address.

“We kind of pride ourselves on the schools we went to, so they will come and tell you some guy from my school that Bencher got 8 As. So they came to call me and when I went, they were all ready and cameras were on.

“Even in the BECE, I kind of write the scores I think I will get and then hope to get because I wrote it. So to be honest, I got 7 As; there was a B somewhere, English,” he continued.

  • Economist proposes listing high-earning SHS on stock market

Economist proposes listing high-earning SHS on stock market

An independent presidential hopeful in Ghana, Dr. Sam Ankrah, has put forward a suggestion to list some high-earning Senior High Schools (SHS) on the stock market to ease the financial burden on the government.

He believes that schools such as Prempeh College, Achimota, and Adisadel College could be offloaded to interested parties, including alumni, who can buy shares and take over the management of these institutions.

Dr. Ankrah argues that this move is necessary to maintain the quality of education in these schools, as the current government-funded “Free SHS” system is struggling to provide sufficient resources.

“We need to offload our high-earned school. Schools like Prempeh College, Achimota, Adisadel College, all these schools should be offloaded to the old boys and anybody with interest to buy into it.

“Let them buy shares into it and then they run the schools. We should flow the school on the stock exchange.

He continued to say that “There is nowhere in the world where you go to boarding school for free, lets me be real here and you want to maintain the novelty of the school. Right now, it’s free and it’s not quality. The quality goes down every day. Already the old boys are managing certain aspects of the schools ,” he explained.

By involving private investment, he believes that the schools can maintain their prestige and excellence.

He stated, “There is nowhere in the world where you go to boarding school for free, let me be real here, and you want to maintain the novelty of the school. Right now, it’s free and it’s not quality. The quality goes down every day.”

According to Dr. Ankrah, the government can retain some interest in these schools while allowing the private sector and passionate stakeholders, such as alumni, to take active roles in managing and funding the institutions.

This, he believes, will enable the government to redirect funds to other important areas while ensuring that the quality of education remains high.

While the proposal may face varying opinions and considerations, it presents an alternative perspective on how to sustain the quality of education in high-earning SHS in Ghana.

  • FDA, Police and Customs Division seize smuggled goods at Achimota

The Police in collaboration with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) have intercepted a 40-feet truck full of contraband goods.

The goods, according to the organisations, were smuggled into the country last Tuesday.

The goods, believed to have been smuggled from Nigeria and included sexual enhancement drugs, pirated wax prints and other pharmaceutical products, were seized at Achimota.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Effia Tenge, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Accra Regional Police Command, told the media that police had a tip-off that the truck with the registration number AE 960 JEG was loaded with goods believed to be contraband had arrived from Kano in Nigeria.

She explained that the goods were about to be offloaded within Accra and its environs, thus, police rushed to the scene and arrested Sani Mohammed, the driver of the vehicle, together with the goods.

DSP Tenge said the vehicle was impounded at the Regional Police Headquarters for investigations and a search in it revealed a quantity of the pirated wax prints and the pharmaceutical products.

The police then invited the FDA and the Customs for the necessary action to be taken, she said.

James Lartey, Public Relations Officer of the FDA in an interview said the medicines were supposed to be imported to Ghana via two approved routes.

He named the two legal routes as the Kotoka International Airport and the Tema Habour, adding that anywhere else was illegal.

Mr Lartey said one could not import any drug unless it was approved, noting that there were drugs that had to be stored under certain temperatures whilst they were being imported, else, they would go bad before their original expiry date.

The Public Relations officer said drugs which have been approved would be kept under the right temperature.

The collaboration between FDA and the security agencies would ensure the safe disposal of the unapproved drugs as well as protect the lives, innocent citizens.

He cautioned the public against the importation of counterfeit drugs, explaining that when found culpable, one would spend between 15 and 25 years in prison.

Unapproved importation of drugs would also lead to a fine of not less than 7,500 penalty units, equivalent ¢90,000.00, he added.

  • Over 40 kiosks, cars burnt to ashes at Achimota

Over 40 kiosks, some cars and a bar have been burnt to ashes at a slum under the Achimota overhead bridge.

Residents at the slum located between Eden Securities and Makey Pub woke up to the Tuesday morning and are counting their losses.

Eyewitnesses say the fire started from one of the kiosks belonging to the son of the landlord who sold the land to Makey Pub.

Troops deployed across fire-hit Australia after horror weekend

They suspect the fire was deliberate because the new landowner has paid the tenants to move away from his property.

According to them, it is to send a message that they have overstayed their deadline but this has been denied by the landowner.

However, the fire affected more people than those who have been asked to move.
