  • Kennedy Agyapong will “kill” my political career if he becomes president – Adwoa Safo

Kennedy Agyapong will “kill” my political career if he becomes president – Adwoa Safo

Former Dome–Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, says she fears for her safety and future if Kennedy Agyapong becomes President of Ghana.

She claimed that the last NPP government was run in a way that favoured family members and close friends, a situation she believes largely led to the party’s poor showing in the 2024 general elections.

Adwoa Safo made the comments while campaigning for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is contesting to become the NPP’s flagbearer. She argued that choosing Kennedy Agyapong as the party’s leader would be a wrong decision for the NPP.

She referenced her personal relationship with the former Assin Central MP, saying:

“I have two children with Kennedy Agyapong, but I can assure you that if he becomes president and I send my Curriculum Vitae to his office, there is no way he will employ me because he wouldn’t be running a family and friends government.

“I am not saying he will become president, but let us assume he does. If I submit my CV to his office, considering the work I have done as a Minister and as a Deputy Majority Leader, and he looks at me and says, ‘You are the woman I have two children with, so I am appointing you as a minister,’ there will be chaos in Ghana if he goes down that path.”

Adwoa Safo added that she believes her future would be in danger if Kennedy Agyapong became president, saying the party needs to pick someone who can bring members together and win back the trust of the public.

“The Kennedy Agyapong I know would never appoint me, and that is why my political career and my future would be at stake if he becomes president,” she stated.

On the other hand, former Energy Minister and running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has decided to throw his weight behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries in 2026.

In an interview on Asempa FM on August 26, the former minister noted that he remains grateful to the former Vice President who decided to make him his running mate despite the many individuals who advised him to do otherwise.

According to Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, Dr Bawumia was engaged countless times by some bigwigs in the party to pick someone else to be his running mate.

“I am not ungrateful. Look at this big party and upon all the people who were praying for the running mate slot, he ignored all of them and made me his running mate.”

“I know it was a difficult situation, but a lot of people don’t know. Some bigwigs in the party went to Dr Bawumia to tell him not to make me the running mate but he ignored them. There are some names that if I mentioned, you would be shocked. Some even took him to offices to advise him against me but still he chose me,” he remarked.

He thus said; “So, I cannot be ungrateful to him… For those who stood in the flagbearership contest, everyone knows Kennedy Agyapong is my friend, but I am still for Bawumia.”

On Tuesday, July 29, the NPP opened nominations for its 2028 flagbearer position. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer and former Vice President, Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyepong, and Dr. Osei Adutwum have all picked up nomination forms.

Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, officially filed his nomination forms on Tuesday, August 26. Party executives are also expected to receive the nomination forms from former Assin Central MP and presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong today, Wednesday, August 27, 2025, ahead of the party’s 2026 presidential primaries.

In the meantime, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has received strong backing from 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who paid him a visit in June to pledge their support.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made room for new additions to its already approximately 220,000 delegates who are eligible to vote in its presidential primaries slated for Saturday, January 31, next year.

In a statement dated August 26, signed and shared by the Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee, Williams Yamoah, the party announced that registration has been opened for an additional 60,000 new delegates, which include nineteen new categories of people. This directive follows reforms adopted at the party’s National Annual Delegates Conference held in Accra on Saturday, July 19.

The statement explained: “In accordance with Article 13(1)(11) of the Constitution of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and pursuant to the motion on transitional provisions adopted at the National Annual Delegates Conference held in Accra on Saturday, July 19, 2025, the following new categories of Party officials and dignitaries have been included in the upcoming Presidential Primary voter register.”

The updated voter register, also known as the party album, will now include several new categories of officials and dignitaries. These are: all former regional and constituency executives, members of the National Council of Elders, 30 members of the National Council of Patrons, all past national officers, former party-card-bearing MPs and parliamentary candidates, as well as former party-card-bearing ministers and deputy ministers.

Other groups added to the list are external branch executives, former external branch executives, and key members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), including presidents of recognised institutions, the National TESCON Coordinator, regional coordinators, and one TESCON patron from each institution.

Additionally, 10 members from each Regional Council of Elders, 10 patrons from each region, and five members and patrons from each constituency have also been included.

The statement directed that “all officers that fall under the categories above are requested to register their names with their respective organisational structures, including the National Secretariat, Regions, Constituencies and External Branches, as applicable, with immediate effect.”

To make the registration process easier, the statement clarified that a digital link would be circulated to External Branch Executives for online registration. All other qualified members were advised to liaise with their respective regions and constituencies to register.

However, the forms are to be accessed via the party’s official website. “The registration form may be downloaded from the Party’s official website. For ease of reference, a sample copy is hereby attached,” excerpts of the statement read. The statement further warned that the registration was strictly for the aforementioned categories of people, with a deadline set for Friday, September 19.

“The deadline for registration is Friday, September 19, 2025. Please be advised that this registration exercise is exclusively open to officers and members who meet the aforementioned criteria. The Presidential Elections Committee shall undertake a comprehensive verification and validation of the Party’s album to ensure that only an authentic and credible register is used for the conduct of the presidential election,” the party cautioned, while expressing confidence in members’ cooperation.

“We count on your usual cooperation and adherence to this directive in furtherance of the Party’s commitment to fairness, inclusiveness, and transparency.”

The NPP is on a journey of reset, reinforcement, and healing following its historic defeat in the 2024 elections. Dr. Bawumia lost the 2024 presidential election, with John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing 6,328,397 valid votes, representing 56.55%, against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

Since the beginning of this year, the party has undertaken several reforms to position itself strongly against its main opponent, the NDC, and to recapture power.

Among these reforms is the abolition of the electoral college in favour of a broader base of delegates. The party has also added 19 new delegate categories and granted amnesty to suspended members.

The NPP has announced that suspended members have been reinstated, and all charges against those facing the disciplinary committee have been dropped.

This decision was taken by the National Council during an emergency meeting held on July 25. In a statement dated August 16 and signed by the Acting National Chairman of the Party, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey, members were informed that as part of measures to ensure unity and cooperation, all banned members had been given the right to return.

“This measure reflects the Party’s unwavering commitment to fostering internal cohesion, strengthening solidarity, and preparing collectively for the political tasks ahead.

“I write to inform you that the National Council, at its Emergency Meeting held on Friday, July 25, 2025, resolved, in the interest of unity and reconciliation, to grant a General Amnesty to all Party members who have been suspended or whose disciplinary cases are currently pending before the appropriate disciplinary bodies,” parts of the statement read.

The party further urged all relevant bodies, including Regional and Constituency Executive Committees, to reinstate suspended members in accordance with laid-down rules and guiding principles.

“We hereby serve notice that this directive lifts all such suspensions and nullifies any ongoing proceedings against affected members,” the statement added.

However, the party clarified that this recall does not apply to members who willfully forfeited their membership. In cases where such individuals wish to return, they are required to submit a formal reinstatement request to the party’s secretariat. Upon acceptance, a two-year ban will be imposed, preventing them from contesting in any internal elections.

Bawumia did not contribute to Ghana’s economic woes, Ofori-Atta did – Adwoa Safo

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has emphasized that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cannot be held responsible for economic woes experienced during the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

Speaking to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) delegates, Adwoa Safo argued that other key officials under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, played a role in the mismanagement of the economy.

According to her, Dr. Bawumia had no authority to counter or reverse decisions taken by the top leadership of government. She further urged the NPP delegates to throw their support behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as they gear up for the party’s presidential election on January 31, 2026.

“Was Dr. Bawumia the finance minister? Were we not in government when some MPs said that because of the way our economy was being mismanaged, we should change the finance minister? Didn’t he damage everything before he was changed? So how can we blame this on Bawumia? He was only the driver’s mate and could not overrule the driver, even if the driver was not performing well,” she said.

Meanwhile, flagbearer aspirant for the New Patriotic Party, Kennedy Agyapong, has picked the first spot on the party’s just concluded ballot. Dr. Bryan Acheampong picked the second position, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia took the third position. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyepong picked the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, officially filed his nomination forms on Tuesday, August 26. Party executives received the nomination forms from former Assin Central MP and presidential hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, on Wednesday, August 27.

Former Food and Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong, has also filed his nomination forms.

If plans changed, why didn’t you give prior notice – Adwoa Safo to NPP over disciplinary hearing no-show

The former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has voiced her concerns about how the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is handling her disciplinary proceedings.

Her concerns arose after she arrived at the NPP headquarters to respond to misconduct allegations, only to be told by a party officer that the meeting had been canceled.

According to her she was not informed of this in advance. Speaking to reporters on Monday, April 7, Safo questioned why she was not personally notified of the cancellation.

“There was no committee sitting. I had an engagement with one of the party’s national officers. There was no hearing, so I am asking myself why I was served on a Sunday to appear when there’s no committee sitting. And then, if there was a change of plan, why wasn’t I served personally or summoned to be told?” she said.

She continued, “If there was a change of plan, why wasn’t I served personally or phoned to be told…I am prepared for a committee hearing, and I come and there is no sitting, so I just pack my bag and just come out.”

Safo expressed disappointment in the party’s handling of the matter, highlighting her frustration with the lack of professionalism.

“I just think that as a party we ought to be a bit serious about these things because, as a lawyer, when a client is referred to a disciplinary committee, the presumption is that the person has done something untoward and you are going to be disciplined.”

“…So why ridicule me in public and come here and tell me that the committee is not even sitting…I thought there was a better way to do this,” she added.

However, NPP’s Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, who received Safo at the party’s office, disputed her claim.

He clarified that the former MP had been properly informed about the change of plans through her legal representatives.

Adwoa Safo to face NPP Disciplinary Committee today

Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, is set to appear before the Disciplinary Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) today, April 7, 2025.

The meeting will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the NPP Headquarters Conference Room in Asylum Down, Accra.

Adwoa Safo has been asked to bring along any documents or witnesses that support her side of the case.

This follows a statement from the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, dated March 20, which said she had been referred to the committee for allegedly going against party instructions.

According to the NPP, Adwoa Safo gave several media interviews in which she spoke about internal party issues, despite a clear warning not to. Party leaders say her comments have hurt the NPP’s unity and slowed down efforts to bring members together after their loss in the 2024 elections.

Today’s hearing could have serious consequences for Adwoa Safo’s role in the party and may set the tone for how the NPP handles similar cases in the future.

Adwoa Safo meets NPP disciplinary committee tomorrow

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has summoned former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, to appear before its Disciplinary Committee on Monday, April 7.

According to a letter dated March 24 and signed by the party’s Director of Finance and Administration, William Yamoah, the invitation follows a directive from the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee. The hearing is expected to take place at 11:00 a.m. at the party’s headquarters conference room in Asylum Down, Accra.

Attached to the invitation was a referral letter from the party’s General Secretary. The communication advised Ms. Safo to come prepared with any documents or witnesses relevant to the case at hand.

“You are advised to present any documentary evidence or witnesses pertinent to the matter under investigation,” the letter stated. It also noted that she may bring legal representation if necessary.

Although the NPP has not officially disclosed the subject of the inquiry, the move comes after recent media interviews in which Ms. Safo criticized the party’s leadership. In those interviews, she claimed she had been neglected following her return to Parliament in 2023.

She also alleged that some figures within the party had worked against her during her extended absence from the legislature and had tried to unseat her.

These statements reportedly unsettled sections of the party, with some members unhappy about the tone and implications of her comments.

The party, however, underscored its commitment to procedural fairness. “The NPP remains guided by the principles of transparency, fairness, and due process,” the letter emphasized, requesting that Ms. Safo confirm receipt of the invitation and her attendance at the hearing.

Copies of the letter were also sent to the National Chairman, the General Secretary, and the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee.

  • You should have parted ways with NPP long ago – Nyaho-Tamakloe to Adwoa Safo

You should have parted ways with NPP long ago – Nyaho-Tamakloe to Adwoa Safo

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has weighed in on the party’s decision to refer former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, to its disciplinary committee.

According to him, Adwoa Safo should have openly addressed the difficulties she faced within the party rather than remaining silent. He believes that if the leadership failed to acknowledge her grievances, she should have taken the bold step of resigning.

During an interview on JoyNews on March 23, he stated “When she (Adwoa Safo) realised things were not going well, she should have come out earlier to talk about it, and if the leadership failed to listen to her then she should have resigned”.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe criticized what he described as a common fear among Ghanaian politicians—the reluctance to resign even when they no longer align with their party’s values.

“That is the problem of the Ghanaian politician, we fear to resign,” he noted.

His comments follow the NPP’s decision to refer Adwoa Safo to its National Disciplinary Committee over remarks she made in recent media engagements.

Adwoa Safo recently made headlines for her strong criticism of the NPP’s Election Review Committee, chaired by Prof. Mike Oquaye.

She dismissed the committee’s work as lacking credibility and claimed it was formed to sideline certain individuals while favoring others.

“A very bogus committee. A committee is intentionally put together to find certain facts and push certain candidates out so that others can be favored. Do you call that a credible fact-finding committee?” she questioned.

Speaking on JoyNews on March 20, 2025, she directly accused Prof. Oquaye of being conflicted and unfit to lead the committee.

“If Prof. Mike Oquaye thinks he has integrity and credibility, I want him to include in his report because his son, Mike Oquaye Jnr., lost his seat. He should give us a detailed report on that,” she said.

She further challenged the committee’s impartiality, insisting that a more independent figure should have been appointed instead of Prof. Oquaye.

“Your backyard is burning, and yet you think the best person to lead a fact-finding committee that includes that very constituency, is you? Why not select an independent person? There are other credible members. I am attacking the chair, not other members. Couldn’t we have found someone else?” she argued.

Following her statements, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, issued a statement on March 20, 2025, indicating that Adwoa Safo had violated party directives.

The party had earlier cautioned members against publicly discussing internal matters in ways that could harm the NPP’s image. However, Adwoa Safo’s defiance has now led to disciplinary proceedings against her.

It remains to be seen what action the party will take following her referral to the Disciplinary Committee.

  • My father’s transport business was unjustly targeted – Adwoa Safo

My father’s transport business was unjustly targeted – Adwoa Safo

Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has condemned the destruction of her father’s transport hub, lamenting that the land has remained unused since the demolition.

In an interview with Okay FM on March 20 she accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of unfairly targeting her father’s business, describing it as a deliberate attempt to undermine her family.

“The land on which the bus terminal stood belongs to the government. It had been rented to us and we were making payments. What pains me the most is that, up until now, the land has been walled off, and nothing has been done with it,” she said.

According to Adwoa Safo, her efforts to get answers from Henry Quartey, the former Greater Accra Regional Minister, were met with resistance.

“The bus terminal that was demolished was located in Agbogbloshie near the ICGC church. One morning, we woke up to see a bulldozer demolishing the bus terminal. What hurts me is that they didn’t even inform us prior to the incident. We didn’t even pick a single computer or a piece of paper from that office. When I called Henry Quartey, the former Greater Accra Regional Minister, on the matter, he told me point blank that it was an order from above,” she recounted.

She expressed disappointment over how the NPP disregarded her father’s transport company, Imperial Express, despite its long-standing support for the party.

“I tried frantically to reach Henry Quartey for an explanation on the demolition many times, but he didn’t pick my calls”.

“My father, Apostle Dr Ing. Kwadwo Safo, had a transport company called Imperial Express, which operated buses traveling across the country and to neighboring countries, including Togo and Benin. Those were the same buses we used to transport voters to various parts of the country to vote for the party during elections,” she decried.

Following her public statements, Adwoa Safo has been summoned by the NPP’s Disciplinary Committee. She believes she is being punished for exposing corruption in the School Feeding Programme under the Akufo-Addo administration.

  • NPP executives have no power over me – Adwoa Safo

NPP executives have no power over me – Adwoa Safo

Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has insisted that no member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has the power to expel her.

She disclosed that her father, Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo, had personally placed her under the mentorship of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Speaking in an interview on Okay FM, she claimed that certain individuals within the NPP administration were against her because she refused to be involved in dishonest dealings.

She clarified that her decisions were never meant to go against the interests of Ghanaians but were rather based on what she believed was best for the nation.

“I want the party to understand that I was not deliberately sabotaging it. Rather, I refused to partake in their corrupt practices because my father raised me to uphold integrity and avoid actions that would bring disgrace to him and the church. Since I chose not to conform to their corrupt ways, they sought to tarnish my reputation and remove me from the party. However, no one brought me into the NPP.

“…It was my father who personally took me to President Kufuor’s office and said, this is my daughter. She has studied procurement law, so I have brought her to you. Therefore, no one has the authority to remove me from the party,” she stated.

Reflecting on her tenure overseeing the school feeding program, she stated that former President Kufuor genuinely intended for the initiative to benefit the public. However, she alleged that some party members took advantage of it for their own financial interests.

“President Kufuor initially had noble intentions for the school feeding program, but over time, it turned into an opportunity that many sought to exploit. Have you considered the plight of these pupils? Many lack proper school uniforms, and some don’t even have decent shoes.

“The meals they receive at school are already inadequate, and now you expect me to take away the little they have, leaving them even more deprived and malnourished,” Adwoa Safo added.

Nobody can force me to keep my mouth shut! – Adwoa Safo lashes out

Former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has strongly criticised the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, stating that he has no right to silence her or anyone else.

This comes in response to an issued directive yesterday, urging NPP members to refrain from discussing internal party matters in the media that could lead to disaffection and unrest.

At the time, Adwoa Sarfo appeared on several media platforms, airing her grievances, and her take on the NPP’s defeat in Dome Kwabenya during the 2024 general elections.

But she told JoyNews that she was only exercising her freedom of speech, which is a constitutional right for all Ghanaians, including her.

“Nobody brought me to the party, and the party is not for anyone, we are all in there to build the party, so nobody can force me out and can’t force me to keep my mouth shut.”

Adwoa Safo continued by pointing out the growing dissatisfaction within the party’s base.

“He [General Secretary] should go on social media and see how the party members are criticising him. He has an election coming up, and he shouldn’t allow himself to be manipulated or used for other people’s agendas. If your base is bitter and feels unheard, they would want someone to speak for them.”

The former MP also spoke about the personal attacks she has endured within the party. She stated that she had been wrongly maligned and felt it was important to set the record straight.

“There has been a character assassination on me. I have been defamed by my own party,” she said. “I owe it to myself to clarify things and set the record straight. Whatever they have painted me as to bring me down, is not the truth. I will make sure the truth is known.”

Adwoa Safo reiterated that every individual has the right to speak freely, without fear of being silenced.

“No one should be silenced for voicing their opinion, especially when it’s a constitutional right,” she added.

We are bringing Bawumia back for 2028 elections – Adwoa Safo

Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has declared her unwavering support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) once again in the 2028 elections, insisting that he deserves another opportunity just as past leaders who eventually won after multiple attempts.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews on Thursday, March 20, she dismissed concerns about Bawumia’s popularity, arguing that Ghana’s political history proves that many successful leaders did not win on their first attempt.

“We are going to bring Dr. Bawumia back as flagbearer for the NPP. He is the best person to lead the party. We have marketed him before, and we will market him again. Every person deserves a second chance,” she said.

Drawing parallels with previous presidents, Adwoa Safo cited examples of leaders who had to contest multiple times before securing victory.

“Former President Kufuor went how many times before he got the nod? Former President Akufo-Addo contested in 2007 and lost, went again in 2012 and lost. After the 2016 election petition, he finally won. Even Prof Mills contested several times before winning, and President Mahama has also run multiple times. So why are they telling Dr. Bawumia that Ghanaians don’t like him? And now they want to put that in a report and expect us to accept it? No,” she stated.

She also pushed back against attempts to silence Bawumia’s supporters, insisting that every party member has the right to express their opinion.

“Nobody brought me into this party, and the party does not belong to any one person. We are all here to build the party, so nobody can force me out. Other people speak, and when other people speak and it is not for something that is pushing for the Bawumia agenda, that is okay but when it is for something that is for the Bawumia agenda, everybody should keep quiet. We will not be suppressed,” she said.

Reaffirming her commitment to Bawumia’s bid for the presidency, she made it clear that she and other supporters would continue to push for his leadership.

“We will not resign until we have Dr. Bawumia as the president of this country. He deserves it. He is a humble person, an honest person,” she said.

Adwoa Safo says she will not contest the Dome Kwabenya seat again unless advised by her father

Former Dome Kwabenya MP, Adwoa Safo, has made it clear that she has no plans to contest for the parliamentary seat again. She explained that the challenges she faced during her time in office have influenced her decision.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews on Thursday, March 20, she stated that she would only reconsider if her father convinced her to run.

Looking back on her tenure as MP, Adwoa Safo admitted that the difficulties she encountered had discouraged her from seeking re-election.

“Considering what I have been through, considering how I have been treated in the constituency despite my devotions, despite my sacrifices, despite my hard work, how I have been treated, I don’t think so, I won’t. It will take my father to change my mind, I have done 12 years and I left a good legacy in the constituency, I will not contest Dome Kwabenya” she said.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), with Mike Oquaye Jr. as its candidate, lost the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections—an area that had long been considered an NPP stronghold.

Although the former Member of Parliament has made it clear that she will not be contesting for the seat again, she did not hold back on her political ambitions.

She expressed her desire to take on an even greater leadership role in Ghana, stating that her ultimate goal is to either become the country’s first female president or serve as Speaker of Parliament in the future.

“I am moving forward, I am looking at other bigger things,” she said.

“Like the presidency”? The Host, Elton John Brobbey asked. She responded, “Yes one day, not now, I am looking at speakership, yes. I am looking at higher challenges and opportunities” she emphasised.

Adwoa Safo referred to Disciplinary C’ttee for disregarding NPP directive against media commentary

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has officially been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for further action following her recent media engagements about party issues.

The NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, charged its members and sympathizers to cease discussions of the party’s internal issues and challenges following their heavy defeat to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections.

In a statement shared on March 20, Mr Kodua, in reference to Article 10(7)(5)  of the Party’s constitution, which emphasizes the importance of unity and discipline within the party, urged members to “immediately cease discussing Party issues that create unrest, negativism, and disaffection in the media and other related platforms.”

Acknowledging the impact of their defeat on members, he reminded them of their duty to defend the party’s reputation, as outlined in Article 3(5) of the Constitution, and warned that anyone who disobeys this directive will face disciplinary action.

“Going forward, the National, Regional, and Constituency Party leadership shall respectively refer any member who violates this directive to the appropriate disciplinary committees of the Party,” parts of the statement read.

The General Secretary’s warnings come at a time when, after over three months of losing power to the NDC, members still discuss and deliberate on the circumstances, actions, and inactions that led to the party’s ‘embarrassing’ defeat in the just-ended elections.

In an interview with the media, Sarah Adwoa Safo, accused the party leadership of orchestrating her loss in the parliamentary primaries, citing her prolonged absence from Parliament as a misunderstood issue. She also berated her former contender, Mike Oquaye, for disrespecting her on several platforms in his bid to become the party’s representative in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Also, Dr. Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, has openly criticized certain individuals within the party, threatening to expose those he believed were responsible for the defeat.

  • I didn’t vote for the e-levy – Adwoa Safo

    I didn’t vote for the e-levy – Adwoa Safo

Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has defended her decision to oppose the controversial Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy), emphasizing that it was a major factor in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) electoral loss.

In an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, March 20, Adwoa Safo explained why she refused to support the policy, arguing that it failed to fulfill its intended purpose and instead placed an undue burden on Ghanaians.

“I didn’t vote for the e-levy, and I have no regrets about my decision,” she stated. “I refrained from supporting it because I believed it wouldn’t benefit the people of Ghana. Instead, it would take away from their already limited resources, especially the most vulnerable members of society.”

Reflecting on the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, she pointed to the e-levy as one of the key reasons for the party’s decline in popularity.

“Ghanaians voted against us partly because of the E-levy,” she asserted.

She further criticized how the tax affected individuals in low-income jobs, particularly those relying on mobile money services to support their families in rural areas.

“Individuals who were most affected were those working in low-paying jobs, who relied on sending money back to their families in the villages. These individuals were already struggling, and the e-levy took away the little they had. It was a tax on their hard-earned money, further deepening their difficulties,” she added.

Adwoa Safo also highlighted the contradiction between government assurances and the economic reality that unfolded after the levy’s implementation.

“We were told that by introducing the e-levy, Ghana could avoid going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, in the end, we still ended up seeking IMF support. Despite implementing this tax, the government was unable to avoid the very financial assistance it promised we could manage without.”

Referencing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 campaign promise to abolish the e-levy, she said recent developments had validated her stance.

“I feel vindicated,” she said. “If the e-levy was truly a good tax, why did we still end up at the IMF? How can we justify taxing those who are already struggling, especially when it didn’t even prevent us from seeking IMF support?”

She concluded by reiterating that the policy had failed in its objectives and only worsened financial hardship for ordinary Ghanaians.

“It just didn’t make sense,” she said. “The e-levy hurt ordinary Ghanaians, and in the end, it didn’t achieve what it promised.”

The e-levy, first introduced by the Finance Ministry on May 1, 2022, and signed into law by then-President Nana Akufo-Addo on March 31, 2022, originally stood at 1.75% before public backlash forced a reduction to 1%. It applied to electronic transactions, including mobile money transfers, bank transactions, and merchant payments. Critics argued that it disproportionately affected low-income earners and small businesses, fueling widespread opposition.

Meanwhile, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Ampem Nyarko has announced that the e-levy will be scrapped by the end of March. Speaking on Channel One TV’s OXFAM Tax Dialogue on Tuesday, March 18, he confirmed that its removal is tied to the approval of the 2025 budget and appropriation bill.

I will not contest Dome-Kwabenya seat again – Adwoa Safo declares

Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has firmly ruled out any plans to seek re-election for the parliamentary seat, citing her experiences in the constituency as a key factor in her decision.

Speaking in a media interview on Thursday, March 20, Adwoa Safo reflected on her tenure, expressing disappointment over how she was treated despite her dedication to the development of Dome-Kwabenya.

“What I’ll say is, considering what I’ve been through, considering how I’ve been treated in the constituency, despite my devotion, sacrifices, hard work, I don’t think so. I won’t. It will take my father to change my mind. I won’t. I have done 12 solid years and I’ve left a good legacy in the constituency. I will not contest Dome-Kwabenya,” she stated.

Looking ahead, she emphasized her focus on new opportunities beyond parliamentary politics.

“We move forward in life and not regress. I am moving forward. I am looking at other bigger things. I am looking at Speakership, higher challenging opportunities,” she added.

Adwoa Safo first entered Parliament in 2013 and served three consecutive terms before losing her party’s parliamentary primary on January 27, 2024. The contest saw her face stiff competition from Dr. Mike Oquaye Jnr, CEO of the Free Zones Authority, and Sheela Oppong Sakyi. Oquaye Jnr emerged victorious with 1,194 votes, while Adwoa Safo secured 328 votes. Sheela Oppong Sakyi finished third with just over 100 votes.

Her electoral defeat followed a period of controversy, during which she spent nearly a year outside Ghana attending to personal matters. Her prolonged absence, which affected her parliamentary and ministerial duties at the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, sparked widespread criticism from constituents and party members.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) suffered further setbacks in the 2024 general elections, losing the Dome-Kwabenya seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the first time.

Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the NDC narrowly defeated Mike Oquaye Jnr, securing 50,967 votes against his 50,669 votes. The Electoral Commission officially declared her the winner on December 31, 2024, marking a historic victory for the NDC in the constituency.

Fix the corruption happening at the School Feeding Programme – Adwoa Safo entreats govt

Former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Adwoa Safo, has called on the government to take decisive action against corruption in Ghana’s School Feeding Programme, warning that mismanagement is crippling the initiative’s effectiveness.

Speaking on Wontumi TV on Wednesday, March 19, the former Dome/Kwabenya Member of Parliament urged the current administration to conduct a thorough review of the programme, which was initially introduced to improve student nutrition and boost school enrollment.

“The rot and the corruption that is going on at the school feeding sector is serious. This government should pay attention to that sector. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor had a great vision around the school feeding programme, but the way it has been twisted is a serious matter,” she stated.

Reflecting on her time in office, Adwoa Safo disclosed that President Nana Akufo-Addo had tasked her with auditing the programme before releasing funds to her ministry. However, she alleged that the findings of her report sparked resistance within the government, leading the President to abandon the directive.

“The majority of the rot was coming from the Central Region. The backlash that followed my submission of the audit report made President Akufo-Addo deny that he had asked me to conduct it. He told me to set it aside, and that’s where my problems began,” she claimed.

Adwoa Safo also recounted how key officials in the programme obstructed her efforts to investigate financial irregularities.

“When I was appointed as the Gender Minister, President Akufo-Addo asked me to conduct an audit of the school feeding programme before I would be granted revenue to operate. What was all the money allocated to the programme being used for? I would call this woman—a key official in the programme—once, twice, even three times, and she wouldn’t respond. Instead, she would send a message saying she wasn’t happy with how I was handling her because she had connections in the government and at higher authorities,” she alleged.

Her revelations have reignited calls for urgent reforms in the School Feeding Programme, with growing concerns over accountability and transparency in its administration.

Akufo-Addo asked me to set aside audit report on school feeding programme after backlash – Adwoa Safo alleges

Former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Adwoa Safo, has claimed that former President Nana Akufo-Addo withdrew his support for an audit into the school feeding programme after facing internal pressure.

Speaking on Wontumi TV on Wednesday, March 19, the former Dome/Kwabenya Member of Parliament alleged that corruption and mismanagement have severely undermined the programme, which was originally designed to provide meals for students in public schools.

She called on the government of President John Dramani Mahama to take urgent steps to reform the initiative, warning that unchecked corruption is draining resources.

“The rot and the corruption that is going on at the school feeding sector is serious. This government should pay attention to that sector. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor had a great vision around the school feeding programme, but the way it has been twisted is a serious matter,” she stated.

Recounting her tenure, Adwoa Safo revealed that former President Akufo-Addo had instructed her to conduct an audit of the programme before funds were disbursed to her ministry. However, after she submitted the report to Cabinet, the President distanced himself from the findings due to mounting pressure from individuals within his own administration.

“The majority of the rot was coming from the Central Region. The backlash that followed my submission of the audit report made President Akufo-Addo deny that he had asked me to conduct it. He told me to set it aside, and that’s where my problems began,” she claimed.

According to her, attempts to investigate financial mismanagement were met with resistance from key officials within the school feeding programme.

Her remarks have reignited calls for greater transparency in the management of the school feeding programme, which has been plagued by allegations of financial mismanagement and inefficiencies over the years.

Meanwhile, the former president and the individuals cited by the former legislator are yet to react to the claims.

Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has claimed that internal party machinations contributed to her defeat in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary.

According to her, some party officials deliberately worked against her, believing she had not treated them well.

Despite her efforts to make amends, she said their actions ultimately cost her the election.

“That’s what I think the party misunderstood me on and decided to punish me, and that cost me my primary,” she said on Tuesday, February 18.

Adwoa Safo lost the NPP parliamentary primary on January 27, 2024, to Mike Oquaye Jnr., CEO of the Free Zones Authority, who secured 1,194 votes.

Adwoa Safo breaks silence on NPP’s unfair treatment by NPP, explains opposition to E-Levy

Former Dome Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has spoken out about the challenges she faced within her own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during her final two years in Parliament.

In an interview with Asempa FM on March 18, 2025, she revealed that she was stripped of her role as Deputy Majority Leader and later assigned to the backbench, which she saw as an attempt to embarrass her.

Adwoa Safo claimed that some NPP members in Parliament, along with party leaders, intentionally worked to damage her reputation.

“Look, it got to a time, in Parliament, we have a certain rule and practice—it has become more like a custom. Someone who has served as a deputy leader before is usually seated right behind the leaders. You can take notice of where Haruna and Muntaka sit. But when I was removed, I was made to sit at the backbench like a newcomer in Parliament.”

Adwoa Safo shared that her relocation to a prominent position was orchestrated by the party’s General Secretary and Majority Whip. During the same discussion, she defended her choice to abstain from voting on the contentious E-Levy bill proposed by the NPP administration.

She clarified that her stance was rooted in her principles and feedback from her constituents, especially church members in Dome Kwabenya, who expressed concerns that the levy would intensify financial struggles.

“I made that principled decision because I knew the E-Levy would not benefit Ghanaians but rather impose more burdens on them.“

Her absence during the E-Levy vote contributed to the majority caucus’ struggle to pass the bill, a move that strained her relationship with the party leadership.

Adwoa Safo’s revelations shed light on the internal struggles within the NPP.

Adwoa Safo reveals why she didn’t join NPP’s Dome Kwabenya campaign team

Outgoing Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has explained her decision not to actively join the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) campaign in the constituency during the recent elections.

Addressing journalists on Monday, December 16, after Parliament resumed from a long break, Adwoa Safo clarified that her absence was deliberate and communicated to the party, as she opted to focus on the NPP’s national campaign efforts.

“I think that those are [people] just criticizing for criticizing sake,” she said in response to criticisms. “From the moment I lost that seat in my primary, I made it clear that I will be joining the national campaign.”

Her comments come after the NPP lost the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, in the recently concluded elections.

The outgoing legislator emphasized that she had done her part to create the space for the NPP’s candidate to secure victory, though the strategy did not materialize.

“I did all in my power to allow the NPP candidate room to potentially win the just-ended poll,” she noted.

Adwoa Safo also acknowledged the critical role played by her affiliation with her father’s Kristo Asafo Church in the party’s previous successes in the constituency.

“A very important factor is my dad and the church. I think that moving forward as a party, we have to have a look at that in the constituency—what role does it play, what pointers does it give to us moving forward.”

Facing scrutiny over her perceived absence and neglect of responsibilities, she reiterated her commitment to the NPP and encouraged the party to thoroughly assess and address the factors that contributed to their loss in Dome Kwabenya.

Ken Agyapong has apologised for lies told during my absence from Parliament – Adwoa Safo

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has revealed that Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has apologised to her over some claims he made during her long hiatus from Parliament to resolve personal issues.

According to her, Mr Agyapong alleged that a private jet flew her from the United States to Ghana. She noted that the claim is false and to set the record straight, Mr Agyapong apologized to her and invited journalists to Parliament to interview him about the matter.

In an interview on Onua FM on March 11, 2024, Adwoa Safo said, “Of course, and he has apologised to me. If you like, come to Parliament and interview him; it is not true. Some of the things are just hearsay, and if people hear things, they do not have that patience to investigate.”

One of the allegations she addressed was Agyapong’s claim that Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare provided her with GH¢120,000, and that she demanded to be appointed deputy majority leader before attending Parliament during her absence from the chamber.

She discredited these claims and urged Ghanaians to verify information before spreading it. She emphasized the importance of caution and diligence in discerning the truth.

“Nana, all those things aren’t true,” she said.

Sarah Adwoa Safo had been in the United States for over a year (since November 2021), looking after her children, especially one who, according to her, required particular care due to medical concerns.

Due to this, she was not able to fulfill her mandate as a Member of Parliament and a Minister of State.

Due to her prolonged absence, Adwoa Safo was referred to the Privileges Committee with two other MPs, Henry Quartey of Ayawaso Central and Kennedy Agyapong of Assin North for violating Standing Order 17(1) of Parliament and Article 97(1)(c) of the Constitution for being absent for 15 sittings.

Several attempts to meet the MP failed due to a lack of receipts. On the matter, Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu described Adwoa Safo’s absence as concerning in an interview with Okay FM, urging that she leave her position if she has no information about her return to parliament.

On May 22, 2022, Adwoa Safo engaged the press to explain the reason behind her absence.

She cited the well being of her son as the primary reason for her stay in the United States.

“As you know, my son is unwell and has to transition to school, so I have to ensure that all that is settled before I can resume my duties and that is exactly what I am doing.”

“I have been doing a lot to take care of my children which the law requires and as you know here in the foreign land, I have to comply with whatever I am directed to do and until all that is sorted out, I have to do what I have to do, and then I will return to my duties.”

“I will be returning definitely to serve my people. I lead and serve the people of Dome-Kwabenya and I have done that for the past 12 years and I know exactly what my responsibilities are, and I am definitely going to do that,” she told JoyNews.

According to her, she had informed the President of her predicament.

On Thursday, July 28, 2022, President Akufo-Addo relieved Sarah Adwoa Safo of her duties as the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection in accordance with Article 81(a) of the constitution.

In response, she thanked the President for the honour given her to serve her country.

In September 2023, Sarah Adwoa Safo rendered an apology to the Ghanaian populace for her absence and inactivity during her tenure as a lawmaker and minister.

Why not mothers – Adwoa Safo contests strict use of “fathers” in national pledge

Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, raised an objection over the sole use of “fathers” in the national pledge when the House rose to recite the pledge as mandated by the new Standing Orders.

Effective Tuesday, February 6, parliamentary sessions commenced with the recitation of the national pledge to foster patriotism.

“I pledge myself to the service of Ghana, with all my strength and with all my heart. I promise to hold in high esteem our heritage, won for us through the blood and toil of our fathers; and I pledge myself in all things to uphold and defend the good name of Ghana. So help me God,” the national pledge reads.

After reciting the pledge at the commencement of the first meeting of the fourth session today, February 6, 2024, Madam Adwoa Safo drew the attention of Speaker Bagbin over the lack of recognition for women in Gold Coast’s toil for independence from British colonial rule.

She noted that singling out the role of men and ignoring women, even when Ghana is described as a woman, shows gender bias.

“This country, even when we were making reference to this country, we call it our motherland but when it comes to the pledge and we were referring to the toil, and fight, struggle, we omit that of our mothers.”

She therefore called on the Speaker to begin processes for gender appreciation and acknowledgement when reciting the national pledge.

“Mr Speaker, I want to draw your attention to it and we have to look at it again as a country so that we become more gender sensitive when it comes to our national pledge,” she added.

The speaker, in response, is said to have indicated the wording is from the constitution, thus a change might require an amendment.

Following the new Standing Orders’ implementation, Members of Parliament will also undergo a roll call.

Residents of Dome-Kwabenya and its environs have reacted to a claim by the Member of Parliament for the area, Sarah Adwoa Safo, suggesting that they have forgiven her for past mistakes.

Recall that Adwoa Safo for a long period took leave from official duties. She cited “personal reasons” for her absence form her Ministerial role. However, some Members of Parliament claimed she did not inform the house of her absence; a situation that resulted in a bad blood between some members of the Majority in Parliament, including Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu.

She eventually appeared after her long absence to continue with her Parliamentary duties despite being dismissed as the Gender Minister by President Akufo-Addo. Some agitated residents and executives of the New Patriotic Patriotic Party vowed to unseat her, a decision some later said they had rescinded.

Fast forward, in a media engagement during the NPP Parliamentary vetting, Adwoa said her constituents had forgiven her.

The Independent Ghana spoke with some residents to ascertain the views of the residents on the matter.

They always come here for money from us even when we have sold nothing for the day. We pay for tickets. We are really suffering here,” Gifty added.

They lament bad roads, poor living conditions, among others, citing these as reasons for not forgiving the incumbent Member of Parliament.

“Who said we have forgiven her?” a motorcyclist at Dome said.

“Is an apology what is going to make our lives better? She deserted us for so long, then when it got to time to vote, she’s come back, for what? We haven’t forgiven her because our living conditions have not improved,” Nana Poku said.

Some residents on the other hand noted that despite Adwoa Safo’s sins, they have forgiven her.

“Once she’s asked for forgiveness, I have forgiven her. We voted for her to work for us but if due to circumstances beyond her control, she couldn’t do her work, why should I hold any grudge against her?” Kwame Nkrumah, a resident said.

Incumbent Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has filed her nomination to contest the The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constituency primary on January 27, 2024.

This will be her fourth move towards Parliament since 2012. That was after the three-time legislator submitted her nomination form to the Dome-Kwabenya constituency executives at Haatso on Friday [December 22, 2023].

The nomination form was received by the constituency Chairman of the Election Committee, Osei Fordjour, who is also the Chairman of the Council of Elders in the constituency; the Constituency Chairman, Robert Osei Bonsu, and a member of the Council of Elders, Monica Agyei.

Amidst brass band, the incumbent MP was accompanied from the Zonal Council office at Dome New Station to Haatso by a large gathering of party faithful adorned in her campaign T-shirts and banners.

Ms Safo, who became MP for Dome-Kwabenya in 2013, will contest for the seat with the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Freezones Authority, Dr Mike Oquaye Jr, and another contender whose name has not yet been made public.

Ms Safo beat Dr Oquaye in the 2019 parliamentary election with just eight votes when she obtained 496 votes as against Oquaye’s 488.

The constituency is the largest constituency in Ghana in terms of voter population, with 172,000 voters, and it is the stronghold of the NPP.

Speaking to the press soon after submitting her nomination, Ms. Safo expressed her appreciation to the party supporters for leaving their busy schedules to still show love for her, promising not to let them down.

She was optimistic that the constituents would cast their votes for her “for continuity and for experience”.

“I have been your MP for 12 solid years and worked with humility, hard work, dedication. You cannot throw that experience away.

“I know that everything that happened in the past one year or one-and-a-half-years, you have forgiven me because to err is human and to forgive is divine,” she prayed.

She said following meetings she had with party supporters since her return, the people had expressed their willingness to surprise the whole of Ghana on January 27, 2024.

“On that day, the whole radar will be on Dome-Kwabenya and they will be looking out for how you are going to be voting to exonerate and show love for your Member of Parliament; for the mother she has been and her service.

“The saying goes that the older the wine gets, the better it is. So, I am your old wine,” she said.

Highlighting her accomplishments since she became MP for the area over the past 12 years, Ms Safo touted various achievements in education, sanitation, health, and roads sectors in the constituency.

She, therefore, urged the voters in the constituency to give her the needed support to enable her to continue the good work for the various communities to continue to witness impressive progress.

On her long absence from the constituency, the MP said many considered her travel to the United States of America as a sign of her downfall.

“As some Ghanaians think that I have fallen, you are my lovers to uplift me, to give victory another chance,” she said.

Adwoa Safo urges Corporate Ghana to support Abokobi Health Center’s Polyclinic upgrade

The Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has passionately urged corporate Ghana and individuals to support the Abokobi Health Center in its transformation into a Polyclinic.

Recognizing the pressing need for infrastructure and health devices, she emphasizes the overwhelming population growth in the surrounding communities, underscoring the vital role of Corporate Ghana in accelerating the upgrading process.

Addressing this need, Hon. Adwoa Safo donated twenty-two (22) medical equipment worth GHS200,000.00 to the Ga East Municipal Health Directorate in Accra on Thursday, December 14, 2023.

“While the government is doing its part to uplift the status of the Abokobi Health Center, I would like to appeal to Corporate Ghana and individuals who have the health of Ghanaian people at heart to come to the aid of the facility. The population in the communities that are direct beneficiary of the health center keeps increasing. This has brought undue pressure on the health facility and it is only through the support of Corporate Ghana and individuals that the facility could be upgraded into a polyclinic where the services they render would be broadened to accommodate more people”, she noted.

The donation aims to enhance healthcare delivery in the Ga East Municipal and resource the Abokobi Health Center.

The medical equipment includes Baby Weighing Scales, Suction Machines, Examination Lamps, Stretches, Isoflurane Fill Adaptors, Sterilizers, Bedpans, Stethoscopes, Fetal Dopples, Drip Stands, patient screens, theatre/medicine trolleys, vacuum extractors, wheelchairs, and diagnostic sets.

“As we all know, one of the flagship programs of the Nana Addo/Bawumia-led NPP government has been the AGENDA 111 project, which seeks to increase the accessibility of healthcare in Ghana and improve healthcare infrastructure. I hope that we can all achieve best practice in our healthcare system to the benefit of the good people of Dome-Kwabenya in the coming years. I am a firm believer is a right and not a privilege”, she underscored.

Hon. Adwoa Safo, a former Deputy Majority Leader, expressed her understanding as a mother of the importance of better healthcare.

She emphasized the contribution to improving healthcare delivery in her constituency through various initiatives, including the construction of a maternity clinic at Haatso, the Abokobi Municipal Hospital, and donations to healthcare facilities.

Acknowledging President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to quality healthcare, she pledged to assist in achieving healthcare goals.

  • It’s problematic that NPP is pampering Adwoa Safo – Kwabena Kwakye

It’s problematic that NPP is pampering Adwoa Safo – Kwabena Kwakye

Oman FM broadcaster and board member of the Ghana National Petroleum Commission (GNPC), Great Wofa Kwabena Kwakye, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he perceives as the party’s failure to rein in MP for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo.

During a recent show on Oman FM, Kwabena Kwakye, formerly a staunch supporter of Adwoa Safo, pointed to instances of what he considered unprofessional behavior by the MP. This included her participation in dancing on TikTok and organizing events while important parliamentary business was ongoing.

Expressing his displeasure with the NPP, he questioned why they allowed her to continue her political career despite her behavior. Kwabena Kwakye argued that Adwoa Safo should face appropriate disciplinary measures rather than being pardoned merely because she issued an apology.

“She was in America, recording Tiktoks and organizing parties and the NPP could not call her to order? They were still entertaining her. Talking about giving her a second chance, can they predict someone’s future behaviour?,” he asked.

“That is the problem, in politics when it gets to a certain level, you should just hang up your boots. I was surprised when she wrote to the NPP general secretary. A party gave her such an opportunity and she was behaving like that. They had to come and beg her when she had to do something to benefit the party,” Kwakye lamented.

“It got to a point where even the NDC started defending her. Is the party a business? Couldn’t they discipline her? She had been MP in 2012. 2016 and 2020. Isn’t it ok? They even made her Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection. Why? Was the party mortgaged to someone?” he questioned.

Adwoa Safo’s prolonged absence from parliament in 2022 became a significant topic of discussion, sparking nationwide debate. The issue arose when she left the country after the passage of the 2022 budget on November 26, 2021.

Due to her extended absence, Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin referred Adwoa Safo to the Privileges Committee on April 4 for missing fifteen sitting days. On July 29, 2023, the president revoked her appointment based on Article 81 of the Constitution. However, on November 11, 2022, Adwoa Safo officially resumed her parliamentary duties upon her return from the United States of America.

After another absence, she returned on February 7, 2023, marking her first appearance in the House that year, where she has since remained. In September, she issued an apology to her party and constituents for her prolonged absence from parliament.

Adwoa Safo explained that personal and family challenges prompted her to leave the country after the 2022 budget was passed. She clarified that missing 15 sitting days, which led to the Speaker referring her to the Privileges Committee and the president revoking her appointment, was not intentional. She apologized for any inconvenience caused and sought forgiveness. Adwoa Safo has since resumed her parliamentary duties and has been consistently present.

I’m definitely winning Dome Kwabena seat – Adwoa Safo

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, is highly optimistic that she will emerge victorious in securing the Dome Kwabena candidacy during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constituency primaries.

Madam Adowa Safo who has now returned to the country and resumed her parliamentary duties following a close-to-year absence, has declared her intention to seek re-election to parliament.

After casting her ballot at the just-ended presidential primaries, which saw Vice President Dr Mahammudu Bawumia emerge victorious, she noted that “I’m definitely winning.”

“You can see, it is obvious,” she added while urging all to unite following the elections to ensure the NPP emerges victorious in the 2024 elections.

“I expect that the best leader wins. I expect that after winning, we bring everybody on board, all hands on deck. We need that to win 2024 elections,” she stated.

For orphan constituencies, elections would be held from August 1 to December 2, 2023.

The opening of nominations with sitting MPs would be held on December 20, 2023 and closing of nominations would be held on January 4, 2024 and elections would be slated for February 24, 2024.

Madam Adwoa Safo has apologised to her constituency members and her political party for her previous absence.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) expressed its approval of the public apology made by the MP.

The Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, stated that her apology is viewed positively and contributes to the party’s image. “She has done something positive and the party welcomes her apology,” Haruna Mohammed said.

However, some New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency say they have taken the apology by Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, with a pinch of salt.

The NPP constituency Secretary for Dome-Kwabenya, Theophilus Larbi, described her apology as habitual, adding that her re-election as parliamentary candidate for the next general elections could adversely affect the party’s chances in the constituency.

Adwoa Safo introduces son to the media

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has ‘outdoored’ her eldest son, Ohene Safo Agyapong, whose illness caused her absence from Parliament for close to a year.

In May 2022, Adwoa Safo explained to Ghanaians that she was residing in the United States in order to cater for her ailing son.

“As you know, my son is unwell and has to transition to school, so I have to ensure that all that is settled before I can resume my duties and that is exactly what I am doing,” she said.

“I have been doing a lot to take care of my children which the law requires and as you know here in the foreign land, I have to comply with whatever I am directed to do and until all that is sorted out, I have to do what I have to do, and then I will return to my duties,” she added.

Over the weekend, Adwoa Safo participated in the just-ended NPP primaries, and during this exercise, she introduced her son, whom she says is in good health condition.

He was flown to Ghana to pay a visit to his grandparents.

“This is my son. He is my eldest son. He is Ohene Safo Agyapong. By God’s grace he is well now. He came to visit his grandparents and also show himself to the public and thank God,” she said.

In the meantime, the Member of Parliament, who has now returned to the country and resumed her parliamentary duties, albeit without her ministerial role, has declared her intention to seek re-election to parliament.

She has also offered her apologies to her constituency members and her political party for her previous absence and is currently conducting stakeholder consultations in preparation for the NPP’s upcoming parliamentary primaries.

Adwoa Safo hooted at by some Dome Market women

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, faced a vocal and unsympathetic reception from a group of women during her visit to the Dome Market in her constituency this week.

After being absent from both Parliament and her constituency for over a year, the MP attempted to reconnect with her constituents but was met with a resounding chorus of disapproval.

A viral video circulating on social media captured Adwoa Safo’s efforts to engage with market women on Thursday, October 26.

However, her attempts were drowned out by the sounds of disapproval, as traders hooted, shouted, and clapped to express their discontent with the MP.

The market women made their sentiments clear by chanting phrases like “We want change” and “Adwoa Safo, we don’t want you again.”

Adwoa Safo’s prolonged absence from parliament in 2022 became a highly debated topic in the country, causing division within the House and her party. Her absence began in November 2021 and triggered a series of contentious events.

In October 2022, a clash occurred between the Majority Leader and the Speaker of Parliament over a decision regarding Adwoa Safo’s fate. The Speaker, Alban Bagbin, ruled that the Privileges Committee’s report was not final. This committee had recommended that the 40-year-old MP’s seat be declared vacant due to her failure to provide an explanation for her prolonged absence.

During the much-anticipated ruling, the Speaker stated that the report from the Committee needed to be presented to the entire House for a decision to be reached. This ruling was met with disapproval from Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader and Suame MP, who deemed it unfortunate and inconsistent.

The general public was divided over Adwoa Safo’s motives, including her constituents who were uncertain about her status in the area and its impact on development.

However, on November 11, 2022, Adwoa Safo officially resumed her parliamentary duties upon her return from the United States. In July of the previous year, she had been removed from her position as Gender Minister by President Akufo-Addo.

In September of the current year, Sarah Adwoa Safo issued an apology to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the controversies she had sparked during her extended absence from parliamentary duties.

The former Gender Minister acknowledged that the negative actions she exhibited during that time were unjustified and expressed regret.

She explained that these emotions were fueled by the complex personal challenges she was facing in her private life.

“It was not my intention to disrespect you. There was a lot going on in my life and family. I’m using this medium to plead for your forgiveness in the name of God,” she said in the September 14 video.

  • “We still love the NPP” – Trader declares as Adwoa Safo visits Dome market

“We still love the NPP” – Trader declares as Adwoa Safo visits Dome market

A staunch supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a trader at the Dome market in Accra, has publicly declared her decision to never vote for Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya constituency, Adwoa Safo, again.

“All we are saying this … I am a full NPP member. Solid. And we voted for you Adwoa.. because we love you, but what you did to us was not good at all. We voted for you so you will come and take care of us. That is why we seriously rallied behind you. But … since you chose to treat us this way, then we say we are tired. Adwoa says she is tired, so she should sit down. They should change her for us. As for NPP we love the party, we haven’t stopped. But if they don’t know and they bring her back we will vote skirt and top,” the passionate trader declared.

This bold statement comes amidst a growing sentiment among traders in the area, who have expressed their disappointment in Adwoa Safo’s performance as their representative.

The sentiment among the market women has been simmering for several months, with traders collectively voicing their concerns about Safo’s apparent failure to fulfill her duties to the people of Dome Kwabenya.

The sentiment appears to be shared widely, as one market woman pointedly asked, “When we voted for Adwoa Safo, what did she do for us? She has done nothing, and we have never seen her since the election.”

This dissatisfaction reached its peak in September when Adwoa Safo issued a public apology for her extended absence from her parliamentary duties. While she expressed regret and acknowledged her unjustified actions, the apology did not seem to satisfy the constituents fully. The NPP constituency Secretary for Dome-Kwabenya, Theophilus Larbi, described her apology as habitual and indicated that her re-election as a parliamentary candidate could negatively impact the party’s prospects in the constituency.

Larbi emphasized the sentiment of the majority, stating that if Adwoa Safo were to return, many constituents would not vote for the party. He highlighted that residents were weary of her repeated absences from Parliament and her lack of communication with her constituents. They believed that her actions had damaged the party’s reputation in the constituency and that she should not be re-elected as a parliamentary candidate.

However, opinions among Dome-Kwabenya constituents appear divided on this matter. While some are willing to accept Safo’s apology and give her another chance, others firmly believe it’s time to explore other candidates. One constituent expressed frustration with the perceived neglect of the constituency, remarking, “Adwoa Safo’s administration is very poor; you see her around only during election time with ‘macho’ men.” Another constituent emphasized the need for change, stating, “The MPs are many; we want them to be downsized.”

The Dome Market woman’s declaration not to vote for Adwoa Safo again reflects a broader sentiment of dissatisfaction with her performance as an MP in the Dome Kwabenya constituency, despite her affiliation with the NPP.

The apology issued by Safo has not entirely quelled the concerns of constituents, and the constituency appears to be divided on whether to give her another chance or seek new representation.

  • The devil worked against God’s works – Adwoa Safo on long absence

The devil worked against God’s works – Adwoa Safo on long absence

The Member of Parliament representing the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has provided an explanation for her extended absence from parliament during a meeting with traders and market women in the Dome market area.

Facing public criticism for her absence from her parliamentary duties for over a year, the MP conveyed that she had to attend to various challenges, including matters concerning her children, as any responsible woman would do.

According to her, the devil had a hand in her long absence, as this was not the handiwork of God.

“I’ve already met a lot of you at home and explained why you didn’t hear from me for over a year and a half. I know that being my mothers, sisters and aunties; you understand certain things.

“As women there are times you need to go through what women go through or do what women do. What really accounted for my absence, I know it is slanted but not broken.

“Along the line, my first male child suffered a certain illness and I had to leave, which in my thinking was supposed to be for a short time to go and fix my home. But the devil who had other plans against God’s work, did not allow things to go that way,” she explained.

During a period of intense political turmoil in Ghana’s currently evenly divided parliament, Adwoa Safo, who was serving as the Minister for Children, Gender, and Social Protection, was notably absent from her post. This absence resulted in a critical shortage of a single vote for the ruling party in advancing government initiatives within the legislative body.

Accusations emerged suggesting that she was undermining her own party, prompting fervent calls for her removal from both parliament and her position within the executive branch of government.

However, her prolonged absence was attributed to a series of distressing circumstances, one of which involved threats from the US government to assume custody of her two children.

Seth Kofi Osei Kissi, the spokesperson for Adwoa Safo, revealed these details during an interview with Kwabena Mensah Abrompah on Radio Universe on September 20, 2023.

Kissi explained that one of the reasons for Adwoa Safo’s absence was a threat she had received concerning the potential loss of custody of her children.

He also disclosed that another contributing factor to Adwoa Safo’s absence was the tragic loss of her newborn child shortly after giving birth.

According to Kissi, when Adwoa Safo traveled to the US, she was confronted with the threat that her children, a boy and a girl, would be taken away from her if she did not take appropriate measures. It was her son who had a medical condition that was of particular concern.

“You see, the white culture and ours are two separate things, they have a way of taking care of children, ladies, and animals, but when you come here, it is different, so the whites were serious about that.

“The issue overpowered her, she thought it was something minor but when she went and realized the severe nature of it, and how her child had been going to the hospital to-and-fro, her own father and her family even lost communication with her.

“The issue took over her life to the extent that she didn’t know what to do because going to give birth and losing your child and your other one is also having a problem but God was able to intervene on her behalf, so, it is all about pleading with everybody for forgiveness.”

Claims that Adwoa Safo spent US$30K on Harvard conference debunked by board member

A member of the Board of Overseers at Harvard University, Sangu Delle, has refuted the claim that a conference at the prestigious American Ivy League institution costs as much as US$30,000.

His response was prompted by a 2020 report from the Auditor-General regarding GETFund scholarships.

According to this report, a sitting Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, had received a scholarship valued at US$30,000, supposedly for attendance at a Harvard conference.

At the time, Sarah Adwoa Safo held the position of Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament and was among several politicians, including Energy and Employment and Labour Relations ministers, who benefited from these scholarships. However, the official report specified that the total cost of Sarah Adwoa Safo’s conference at Harvard was US$29,804, which covered both tuition and living allowances.

“I’m on the Board of Overseers at Harvard University and I can tell you for a FACT that there’s no conference at Harvard that costs $30,000 for attendees. “Hon” Adwoa Safo & the others need to be in jail for such reckless abuse of public funds,” he tweeted over the weekend.

Delle was one of the many diasporans who participated in the online #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest against the government.

He made a number of promises, including that he would cover the expense of some individuals’ medical care who had been subjected to police brutality after being wrongfully detained on September 21, the first day of the three-day protest.

Adwoa Safo’s aide reveals how MP was threatened by US govt with losing child

The prolonged period of time during which Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has been absent from her parliamentary duties has been attributed to a series of deeply distressing events. These include threats made by the United States government concerning the potential loss of custody of her two children.

Seth Kofi Osei Kissi, acting as the spokesperson for Adwoa Safo, provided these details during an interview conducted by Kwabena Mensah Abrompah on Radio Univers on September 20, 2023.

Kissi elaborated that one of the primary reasons for Adwoa Safo’s prolonged absence was the grave threat she received, which revolved around the possibility of her losing custody of her two children. Additionally, he disclosed another tragic event that has contributed to her absence, which was the heartbreaking loss of her newborn baby shortly after giving birth.

Kissi further explained that Adwoa Safo had traveled to the United States, where she was confronted with the distressing ultimatum, indicating that “if she doesn’t take care, her children will be taken away from her.” It is noteworthy that Adwoa Safo has two children, one male and one female, and it was the male child who faced a significant medical condition.

Meanwhile, the former Gender Minister broke her silence on her extended absence from Parliament last week.

During this communication, she extended an unreserved apology to her political party and its members. In doing so, she also shared some insights into the personal challenges that she and her family had been grappling with during that extended period of absence.

Adwoa Safo openly recognized that her absence had not been deliberate, emphasizing that it had been unintentional. She conveyed profound regret for any inconvenience her absence might have caused to her party and its members.

Adwoa Safo’s son suffered a serious illness that almost left him paralyzed – PA tells all

Seth Osei Kissi, an aide to the Member of Parliament for the Dome Kwabenya Constituency, Adwoa Safo has disclosed the distressing circumstances behind Adwoa Safo‘s extended absence from Parliament several months ago.

Mr. Kissi, during an interview with Top FM on “The Morning Show with Kwame Nkrumah Tikesie”, unveiled a series of heart-wrenching setbacks that led the MP to take a necessary sabbatical from her roles as a legislator and gender minister in 2020.

As he recounted the emotional toll of these events, Mr. Kissi alleged that, “In the lead-up to the 2020 elections, we learned that Hon Adwoa Safo was expecting a child. Tragically, she endured a stillbirth after childbirth. It’s an emotionally devastating situation, and she may have even lost her own life if not for divine intervention.”

However, her trials extended beyond her stillbirth ordeal. While grappling with the loss of her child, Adwoa Safo received a heart-wrenching call from the United States concerning one of her children. She has a son and a daughter in the US, and the call conveyed distressing news about her son’s severe illness, which threatened to result in permanent disability. In response, she promptly journeyed abroad to be with her ailing son. Nonetheless, upon her arrival, another agonizing challenge emerged—a looming possibility of losing custody of her children.

Adwoa Safo and her son, Kelvin Ohene Safo-Agyapong

“Consider the emotional strain of enduring a stillbirth, nearly losing your own life, and then receiving news that your child faces severe illness, with the potential for a life-altering disability. To exacerbate her anguish, there were threats of losing custody of her children. How does one muster the strength to confront such an overwhelming ordeal?” Mr. Kissi recounted

He however did not mention the nature of her son’s illness or the duration of the said illness.

Adwoa Safo, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, publicly extended her heartfelt apologies on Thursday, September 14, to the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and other party officials.

Adwoa Safo’s son, Kelvin Ohene Safo-Agyapong

In her statement, she attributed her extended absence from Parliament, during which her seat remained vacant, to personal and family issues. Her absence had incited controversies, leading to difficulties for the ruling party in securing the necessary numbers for voting on critical bills in Parliament. This turmoil resulted in Adwoa Safo becoming the target of heavy criticism, with some advocating for her removal as a minister and the declaration of her seat as vacant.

Although she was subsequently relieved of her ministerial position, Adwoa Safo has made a triumphant return to Parliament after several months and has declared her intention to seek re-election in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Adwoa Safo’s aide, Mr. Kissi, acknowledged that the MP had been overwhelmed by the gravity of her personal challenges. He also noted that her failure to effectively communicate her situation to Ghanaians in a timely manner had contributed to the public outcry she currently faces. Nevertheless, Mr. Kissi expressed his belief that Adwoa Safo’s recent apology was a positive step, and he appealed to Ghanaians, her party members, and constituents to empathize with her plight and extend their forgiveness.
