Bibiani Old Town residents beat suspected thief to a pulp, shave his hair

In the community of Old Bibiani, Western North Region, a suspected thief faced assault after being accused of multiple thefts.

The individual, identified as Prince, also known as Baron De Young Don, allegedly stole a flat-screen TV, a standing fan, an iPhone, money, and various other items.

His assailants labeled him a repeat offender, claiming he had a reputation for stealing from community members.

Kofi Gyabaah recounted the incident on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, explaining that Baron De Young Don, who was left with little hair after the assault, was accused of meticulously planning his thefts by monitoring his victims.

Residents took action after a friend, who had also been a victim of theft, noticed suspicious behavior from Baron De Young Don and discovered stolen items in his possession. Prompted by the friend’s report, locals apprehended him.

Baron De Young Don allegedly faced further assault, including having hot water poured on him, as his attackers demanded information about other stolen items.

He confessed to selling some and entrusting others to acquaintances for safekeeping.

Despite his attempts to defend himself, Prince was overwhelmed by his assailants.

Following appeals from his relatives, the intervention of the area’s Assemblyman, Daniel Kaakyire Addae, led to Prince being handed over to the police.

Fix our roads or lose our votes in December Polls – Nyakrom residents to govt

The youth of Agona Nyakrom in the Central Region organized a demonstration to protest against the government’s neglect of various issues plaguing the town.

Despite numerous petitions to the government via the District Assembly regarding the reconstruction of a bridge, the improvement of the health center, the completion of an astro turf project, and the repair of road networks, their concerns have still not been addressed.

In a show of discontent, the youth marched through the streets of Nyakrom adorned in red and black attire, brandishing placards with messages like “No bridge, no vote,” “Health center with only six beds,” and “Nyakrom deserves better social amenities.” Other placards read: “Males and females sleep in the same ward,” “No astro turf, no Akwambo festival,” “NPP government has disappointed us,” “Fix the bridge,” “Complete the astro turf project,” and “Fix Nyakrom’s town roads.”

The protest disrupted traffic flow along the main Swedru/Nyakrom road for over seven hours, inconveniencing commuters and causing significant congestion.

Following the demonstration, Mr. Bright Mensah, the Public Relations Officer of the Agona Nyakrom Youth Association, addressed the media, revealing that the protest had been postponed due to constraints imposed by the town’s chiefs.

He highlighted the dire state of healthcare facilities, emphasizing that the Nyakrom Health Centre housed a mere six beds and lacked adequate medical staff.

Mensah also drew attention to an abandoned astro turf project initiated by a local resident in 2019, which was handed over to the government for completion but has since languished for five years. He questioned how the town could nurture sporting talents without proper infrastructure, expressing dismay over the absence of asphalt roads in Nyakrom.

Asserting that no political campaigning would be permitted until basic amenities were provided, Mensah urged authorities to prioritize the aforementioned projects to improve living standards and foster peace in the town.

  • Asante Kotokos physiotherapist refutes claims by Kumasi-based journalist

The physiotherapist of the African Club of the Century Kumasi Asante Kotoko Mr. Emmanuel Jaidyn has described comments made by a Sports presenter, Kweku Edison, who works with Wontumi Radio in Kumasi as a fallacy.

According to him, the Asante Kotoko team travelled to Sudan for preseason without him because he was taking care of Mbela and Mfegue who couldn’t travel with the team because of injuries.

Kweku Edison, the sports journalist made a statement that he fought with a Simba SC player during their friendly match.

In a Twitter post, Emmanuel Jaidyn debunked the speculations by the Kumasi-based journalist.

“The person in the video is not me whereas I am in Ghana rendering other club services,” he said.

“I urge that such comment should be treated as void as it a false accusation, an action I didn’t participate in,” he added.

  • Malawi president appeals court ruling nullifying election win

Malawi’s President Peter Mutharika and the country’s electoral commission have formally filed an appeal against a court ruling that overturned his win last year.

“I can confirm that the court has received both appeals by first respondent [the president] and second respondent [electoral commission],” High Court Registrar Agnes Patemba told the Reuters news agency on Friday.

A sworn statement by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Jane Ansah, who supports the appeal, said the constitutional court overstepped its powers by ordering parliament to convene within 21 days to amend the Electoral Act.

Ansah’s statement also asserts that the budget for a fresh election would cost Malawi a lot of money unless enforcement of the court’s judgement is suspended.

The constitutional court on Monday annulled last year’s disputed presidential election results, citing “widespread” irregularities and ordering a new vote.

The election last May returned the sitting president to power, leading to deadly confrontations and widespread unrest.

The MEC had declared Mutharika the narrow winner of the May election with 38 percent of votes, followed by Lazarus Chakwera with 35 percent and former Vice President Saulos Chilima third with 20 percent.

Mutharika had denounced the ruling as “a serious subversion of justice, an attack on our democratic systems and an attempt to undermine the will of the people”.
