  • Ill respond to your claims Akufo-Addo to Amidu

President Akufo-Addo says he will, in due course, respond to accusations of interference against him by the ex-Special Prosecutor in his resignation letter.

Martin Amidu resigned from his post as Special Prosecutor citing interference by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his work.

“The reaction I received for daring to produce the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption report convinces me beyond any reasonable doubt that I was not intended to exercise any independence as the Special Prosecutor in the prevention, investigation, prosecution, and recovery of assets of corruption. My position as the Special Prosecutor has consequently become clearly untenable,” a part of the resignation letter said.

It continued: ”It is essential for me to state for the purpose of the records, and contrary to public perceptions, that my appointment letter was received on 5th February 2020 (almost two (2)-years after my appointment). The copy addressees made no efforts to honour any of the conditions of appointment in terms of emoluments and benefits of the appointment ever since my warrant of appointment was issued on 23rd February 2018 to the date of my letter of resignation.

Reacting to the claims, the Presidency in a statement said the “President has taken due note of the other matters raised in your letter and the government will issue a statement responding to them in due course.”

  • Stop taking credit for cashew development, you deceived farmers – Mosquito ‘bites’ Akufo-Addo

The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has chided President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over his failed promises to the people of Bono Region, particularly cashew farmers.

According to Asiedu Nketia, President Akufo-Addo knows nothing about cashew development saying he could hardly differentiate a cashew tree from that of mango.

He recalled a festival in the run-up to the 2016 election in Suma Ahenkro of the Jaman North District, then-candidate Akufo-Addo promised to raise the price of a bag of cashew when voted into office.

The NDC General Secretary while addressing communities in the Banda constituency of the Bono Region as part of his campaign tour, stated that President Akufo-Addo deceived Cashew farmers with his sweet promises just to win power.

“In 2016, a bag of cashew sold for GHC900 and Akufo-Addo promised a higher price when elected. Sadly, a bag of cashew will hardly sell for GH¢200 today. This is a total cheat. It is only an NDC government that cares about Cashew Development,” he said.

On the part of the NDC, Hon. Asiedu Nketiah said the next NDC government under President John Mahama will establish a Cashew Development Board in the league with COCOBOD to restore and determine cashew prices in the interest of farmers.

“Cashew Development Board will improve the wellbeing of Cashew farmers and it will bring money to the cashew farmers pocket under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama.”

The NDC General Secretary has spent a considerable number of days touring his home region with his team which includes, NDC spokesperson on local governance, Mohammed Kwaku Doku, Fred Agbenyo, Deputy Director of International Relations and Brogya Genfi, former Ashanti Regional Youth Organizer.

  • Government begins distribution of 500K improved cook stoves

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has launched the distribution of the 500,000 improved cookstoves project, at a ceremony at Akuse, in the Eastern Region, on Monday, 26 October 2020.

It will be recalled that during the 2nd Africa Climate Change Summit held in October 2019, in Accra, President Akufo-Addo indicated how the effect of Climate Change is undermining Africa’s ability for growth and development and pledged the commitment of his Government towards taking practical and proactive steps to mitigate the impact of climate change on the planet.

A major programme of action of Government is, thus, the adoption of cleaner cooking solutions, by scaling up the use of LPG in households.

“I am happy to inform you that significant progress has been made, and very soon the program for the LPG cylinder recirculation model, which will ensure wider use of LPG throughout the country, will be launched,” he said.

The President continued, “Since it will be difficult to have all households switch to the use of LPG, in the short term, our strategy is to promote the use of two million improved and efficient wood-fuel stoves as an interim measure, until such time that all households eventually migrate to LPG or electricity as main cooking fuels”.

President Akufo-Addo explained that the use of these improved and efficient charcoal stoves, coupled with the ongoing reafforestation programmes, has the potential to reduce significantly the emission of carbon dioxide and the rate of deforestation in the country.

He thanked the East-West Power Corporation, the Climate Change Centre (CCC), and the Government of South Korea, for providing the grant funding of US$5,500,000.00 to produce locally and distribute 500,000 improved charcoal stoves in Ghana in exchange for carbon credit to offset their carbon dioxide emissions.

This, he added, is a win-win situation for the parties involved, and, by far, the largest Certified Emission Reductions intervention in Ghana and West Africa.

“The five hundred thousand improved cookstoves would be distributed to beneficiary households in all the sixteen (16) Regions of the country, using the distribution systems adopted by the Government of Ghana and the Korean investors. This is just phase one. Phase two, which consists of another 500,000 units is being developed for funding, so as to ensure that as many households as possible receive the improved cookstoves,” President Akufo-Addo said.

In all, it is expected that some one million tonnes of carbon dioxide savings over the project life will be realized, and contribute to the improvement of the overall carbon footprint of Ghana.

“In terms of the creation of job opportunities, about two hundred direct jobs have been created by this project alone in Ashiaman, Komkope, Mobole, Achimota, Kasoa, Weija, Cape Coast, and Kumasi, where artisans were engaged in the production of the various components of the stoves. This is expected to increase to some one thousand (1,000) direct jobs, as we scale-up,” President Akufo-Addo said.

He, therefore, urged everyone working on this project to do so diligently, so that “we can leverage investments to grow the cookstoves manufacturing industry, increase access to improved cooking solutions, and maximize the benefits for our socio-economic development”.

  • ‘Tema to get new sewer network, solid waste and water treatment plant’ Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has cut the sod for the commencement of the construction of a sewer network and waste water treatment plant, and a solid waste treatment facility, at Tema.

According to President Akufo-Addo, Tema is the foremost, well-planned community in Ghana, with a central sewerage network, pumping stations, and a treatment facility, which were constructed and commissioned in 1963, and, consequently, rehabilitated in 1994.

The facility, the President noted, has been shut down because almost all the sewer lines have become obsolete and overaged, thereby creating environmental pollution and occasioning serious health hazards for residents.

Indeed, the initial design capacity of the sewer plant was to treat twenty thousand (20,000) cubic metres of waste water per day for a total population of fourteen thousand, nine hundred and thirty-seven (14,937). The current population of Tema, according to the Ghana Statistical Service, is three hundred and sixty thousand, eight hundred and twenty-eight (360,828).

“The sewer system can, therefore, not cope with the volumes generated as a result of increased population,” he said.

The President continued, “It is, thus, for this reason that Government deemed it prudent to facilitate the construction of an Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant and a Waste Water Treatment Plant to address the environmental sanitation challenges confronting the good people of Tema.”

He explained that the facility will be a modern waste water treatment plant with a combined system that will treat both waste water from the network and septage from cesspool trucks.

“The design capacity is 44,000 cubic metres per day for wastewater from the sewer network, and 1,000 cubic metres per day of septage from cesspool trucks, for areas that are not on the network. The entire waste water treatment plant will comprise the construction of a new treatment plant, rehabilitation/retrofitting of the pumping stations, and construction of a new reticulation system (sewer network)”, President Akufo-Addo added.

Additionally, a four hundred (400) metric ton state-of-the-art Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant will also be constructed at Ashaiman, and it is expected to receive, sort and process some four hundred (400) tons of municipal solid waste per day, to provide a sustainable solution to the solid waste disposal problem in Ashaiman and its environs.

Once completed, the plants will provide an opportunity to have effective and efficient management of municipal solid and liquid waste in a more environmentally-friendly and sustainable manner.

The production of organic compost for horticultural and agronomical purposes will be an added advantage to boost agricultural production and the programme for Planting for Foods and Jobs.

“Processing of the recyclable fractions of the waste, i.e. paper, plastic and metal, for reuse as input materials for recycling will, in the medium to long term, improve sanitation in the area. Furthermore, the Integrated Composting and Recycling Plant and the Waste Water Plant will create hundreds of direct and indirect employment opportunities,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo told the gathering that government has awarded a contract for the decommissioning and re-engineering of the Kpone (Tema) and Oti (Kumasi) landfill sites, to receive the growing solid waste generated within the Greater Accra Metropolitan and Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Areas respectively, so as to restore the sanctity of the environment.

He, thus, urged all key stakeholders, particularly the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), to collaborate with the operators of the facility.

  • Phase one of 17-km Tema-Aflao road underway after Akufo-Addo cuts sod

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday, October 25 cut the sod for the construction of Phase One of the Tema-Aflao road, in fulfillment of a pledge he made when he commissioned the Tema Interchange project.

Once completed, this project will alleviate the plight of motorists traversing the Tema-Aflao stretch, and tie into the Trans-African Highway Project, from Lagos to Abidjan, with the current two-lane dual carriageway being expanded into a three-lane carriageway in each direction, he said.

With commuters having to spend over four hours traversing the road along with the Dawhenya township, the President described the situation as “very unproductive”, hence the move by the government to address the situation on that road and other areas along other national corridors.

The 17-kilometer road project begins one-kilometer east of the Tema Expressway Roundabout, incorporating mixed-use towns such as Dawhenya, and ends approximately 3km east of the Central University intersection.

At the ceremony, President Akufo-Addo noted that the need to upgrade this corridor has been evaluated in the context of the overall Trans-West African Highway, in addition to the fact that this road serves as the backbone for a significant and growing coastal residential, economic and recreational population.

Additionally, the Transport Infrastructure Framework of the Ghana Infrastructure Plan (2018-2047) recognizes some road sections as being critical to the socio-economic development of the country.

The Plan, therefore, highlights that the development of these priority corridor roads will facilitate trade and movement of goods and services within the West African Region.

He reiterated the commitment of the government to ensure the implementation of the declaration of 2020 as the Year of Roads, adding that more sections of roads across the country are being upgraded from gravel-surfaced to bitumen-surfaced dressed roads or asphalt concrete surfacing.

The President expressed the gratitude of the government and the Ghanaian people to the British government for their continued assistance and support towards the construction of the Tema-Aflao road.

President Akufo-Addo entreated the general public and all who, in one way or another, will be affected by the construction of this road, to observe the traffic management measures that the contractor will put in place during the execution of the works.

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed concern about the current state of the Ghanaian economy.

He says it is the worst in the history of the Fourth Republic.

Addressing members and supporters of NDC at Daboase in the Wassa East constituency on Thursday, 22 October 2020, as part of his five-day campaign tour of the Western Region, Mr Mahama observed that the economy on the watch of President Akufo-Addo is burdened with huge debt, with the recent IMF report indicating that Ghana’s debt-to-GDP is 76 per cent.

He said, apart from the unprecedented huge debt-to-GDP ratio, there is also an unenviable budget deficit of 15 per cent, which is also historic.

Mr Mahama said Ghana’s economy has grown steadily since 1992 to create opportunities for citizens until this year when the economy slumped due to mismanagement by the government, causing unbearable hardship for many families.

“And they are preaching four more. Four more for what?,” he quizzed.

“Ghanaians gave you four years and you failed and you are saying four something.”

“For more years for what?”, he asked.

Mr Mahama said another mandate for President Akufo-Addo will spell doom for Ghanaians as it would lead to another four years of opportunities for a privileged few, and poverty and hardship for many people.

He said the December 7 general elections offer an opportunity for Ghanaians to rescue the country and its destiny from the clutches of president Akufo-Addo and his privileged few, and thereby create opportunities and prosperity for all Ghanaians.

So, I applaud the contestants Isaac Kofi Gyamfi, Benjamin Nketiah and perhaps the most famous of them all Daniel Kekeli Gakpetor and the reserved player, Faith Cyril, for ensuring trophy number six came finally to PRESEC.

“Indeed having gone nearly a decade without winning a trophy, it is entirely fitting that the Akufo-Addo gradaunds i.e. the first batch of beneficiaries of the Free SHS policy were the once to have ended PRESEC trophy draught. So, I also share in your success,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo also reiterated that PRESEC has become one of the best senior high schools “if not the best” in the country.

“Indeed, winning the sixth title means that you are now the undisputed kings of the national science and maths quiz. As an honorary Odadee, I am proud of this achievement,” he added.

The President further congratulated past and present management, teaching and non-teaching staff, alumini and students of the school.

He also expressed appreciation to the organisers of the quiz, Prime Time Limited for their continued efforts to make the teaching and learning of science and maths exciting.

  • Seeking 2nd term appropriate U/E chiefs to Nana Addo

The Upper East Regional House of Chiefs says the performance of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will ensure victory in his quest for a second-term.

Speaking on behalf of members, outgoing President of the House Naba Orlando Awuni II said they recognize the numerous projects undertaken since 2017 when Mr Akufo-Addo ascended the presidency.

He listed the under-construction Bolgatanga-Bawku road, the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam and the provision of ambulances for each constituency in the Upper East Region as a few of the projects initiated by the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

Naba Awuni II said despite the constitution debarring chiefs from engaging in active party politics, tradition, on the other hand, requires them to commend whoever does something good.

Therefore, he stressed that the second-term being sought by Mr Akufo-Addo is “appropriate and indeed it shall be granted by your performance and that will ensure victory for you”.

“Your Excellency, the gospel being preached by your own self and your competitors are all noted and I believe Ghanaians are taking note of the preaching and that will guide on the 7th of December 2020 polls.”

  • Akufo-Addo inspects completed Namoligo 1-Village-1-Dam project

President Nana Akufo-Addo has inspected the completed “one-village-one-dam” project constructed in Namoligo in the Talensi constituency of the Upper East Region.

Accompanied by the Upper East Regional Minister, Paulina Abayage, and the Agriculture Minister, Dr Owusu Afriyie-Akoto, President Akufo-Addo was told that the construction, in fulfilment of the 2016 manifesto pledge of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was undertaken by the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA).

The Namoligo Dam is one of 10 small dams which have been completed by government through GIDA/Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The contract for the construction of the Dam was awarded in May 2019 and has been substantially completed.

With the project costing ¢2.5 million, the Namoligo dam has a water storage capacity of 145,300 cubic meters and has a minimum dam life of 40 years.

The President was told that, for occasional (supplementary) irrigation, the cropping area for vegetables can increase to some 50 hectares, with optimum yields assured, since crops will always get the needed water required for healthy growth throughout the growth stages.

To facilitate water access for irrigation, two outlets, controlled by sluice valves, have been provided at vantage points to allow free flow of water on either side of the valley.

Indeed, GIDA has constructed 10 similar small dams with irrigation outlets in Upper West Region, and the Northern Region, all in support of “One Village One Dam” programme.

The President urged members of the community to take very good care of the dam, and hoped that the Namoligo community and the other 10 communities that are beneficiaries of the dams, will use them for their own benefit.

Since 2017, Government of President Akufo-Addo, in its bid to fulfil the 1-village-1-dam policy, has constructed a number of small-earth dams for water storage, irrigation, and for use by livestock. This is the largest stock of such small earth dams provided since independence.

Thus far, 439 small-earth dams are under construction, and 375 have been completed, and 64 are between 90-100% complete. Each dam provides water for up to five hectares of farmland.

Under the Akufo-Addo government, the Tono irrigation dam has been rehabilitated and rehabilitation projects on both the left and right banks of Kpong are also in progress.

Speaking on the floor of parliament on Tuesday October 6, Mr Iddrisu who is also the Member of Parliament for Tamale South described the action of the group as an ugly threat to the stability of the country.

“There is an ugly threat to the stability, sovereignty and integrity of Ghana in the Volta Region.

The Christian Council of Ghana on behalf of all the Ecumenical Church Leaders in Ghana noted that the security agencies alone cannot deal with the insurgence in the Volta Region.

“Some Police stations have been attacked recently and many innocent Ghanaians are killed, maimed and assaulted.

We pledge our readiness to support government to address the issue amicable. In this regard, we will support the government in engaging the chiefs and people of the Region to achieve national cohesion.

“We would like to appeal to all Ghanaians especially the chiefs, youths and people of the eastern corridor communities of the country to remain calm in the face of provocation, to desist from being used to perpetrate the evil intentions of others and to safeguard the fledging peace we enjoy in Ghana.”

“The whole world is praising Akufo-Addo for the good work he did in containing COVID in Ghana when even more resourceful nations still grapple with the virus. So when his work comes to a close; and his work is not ending now, even if it will end that will be around 2024, he should build a presidential library which will teach people how he handled the COVID virus in Ghana,” the Okyenhene said.

  • Secessionist attacks: If I panic, the country panics – Akufo-Addo

President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has responded to the recent attacks by some secessionist group in the Volta Region.

In what can best pass for brazen assurance, the president stated emphatically that the country will definitely “deal with them”, since the security agencies are on top of the issue.

The group on Friday, September 25, 2020 blocked some principal roads in the Region and on Tuesday, September 29, some unidentified people believed to be members of the group carried out an arson attack on the State Transport Corporation (STC) in Ho, setting fires to the company’s buses.

The group is demanding to become an autonomous country called ”Western Togoland”.

The actions by the secessionist have become a grave concern to the entire nation with some political figures and socio-economic commentators condemning the group.

Some people have also slammed the President for going silent on the issue.

Visiting the studios of Hello FM in Kumasi on Wednesday, September 30, President Nana Akufo-Addo opened up on the matter.

According to him, he has left the matter in the capable hands of the security personnel, stressing the appropriate institutions are up to task.

He said he has unflinching confidence in the security agencies to handle the case and ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.

He was of a strong conviction that the situation will be well handled by the security agencies.

”I have to be calm because institutions are in place. The security agencies are doing their work. They’ve started already and we’ll see results. If I panic, the country panics. It’s like the COVID-19 disease, if I had panicked, fear would have gripped all of us. But I know the work that God has appointed me to do, if I panic, the entire nation will also panic. That is not the purpose of leadership. I’m supposed to assure people that our country will work. What is happening in the Volta Region in the time of these handful – it’s just a handful of people, these secessionists – we’ll deal with it. I have no doubts about it”

”I trust the security agencies. I trust the Armed Forces. I trust the Police. I trust their leadership. The intelligence agencies, I know they are all working very, very, very hard to make sure that this matter is dealt with as quickly as possible”, he said in an exclusive interview with host King Edward de Slave.

  • ECOWAS stands by civilian-led transition team in Mali – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday said ECOWAS has reaffirmed its position that a civilian leadership should be in charge of the transition in Mali.

He said that once the required leadership was put in place through the processes that the Military rulers had agreed on in Mali, the sanctions that had placed on that country would be lifted.

Speaking to journalists after the consultative meeting convened by him to resolve the political crisis in the West African nation, President Akufo-Addo said though an agreement had not reached, the military leadership agreed with the decisions taken at the meeting.

However, the military leadership said they would have to go back to consult with those who were responsible for decisions to get them to buy into it.

“The view point of ECOWAS is that matters that have been put out should be dealt with in terms of days and not weeks so that we begin the process of normalizing the situation in Mali,” he said.

In that direction, President Akufo-Addo who was undertaking his first major assignment after being made the regional bloc’s chairman, said the mediator in the crisis, Nigeria’s former leader Goodluck Jonathan would return to Bamako in a week’s time to continue with talks with the military Junta.

“The situation in Mali calls for a quick resolution, we have to have a government in place that can begin the process of normalising things, and more than anything else organising the resistance to the Tuareg menace.

“The issue is now in the hands of the Malians,” he stated, hopeful that by the time the mediator returns to Mali, things would have been sorted out so that the sanctions can be lifted.

ECOWAS had imposed sanctions on Mali and asked neighbouring states to close their land and air borders with the country after the military deposed the 75 year old Malian President Ibrahim Keita on August 15, 2020.

The Bloc also suspended all financial flows between the 14 other member states and Mali, suspended the country from international decision making bodies and gave the military junta a deadline of September 15 2020 to appoint a new civilian president and prime minister.

Tuesday’s meeting was attended by at least eight Presidents, Mali’s political junta and other stakeholders.

Guinea’s Alpha Conde, Togo’s Faure Gnassingbe, Nigerien leader, Mahamadou Issoufou, who is the immediate past ECOWAS Chair, Senegalese President Macky Sall, Burkinanabe head of state Roch Marc Christian Kabore, Ivorian President Alassani Ouattara and the Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo took part in the consultative meeting.

They have since left for their respective countries.

  • President Akufo-Addo wants an end to the Malian political crises

Presidemt Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Chairman of ECOWAS, says there was need to bring finality to the upheaval in Mali.

“That country can no longer afford any delay in putting a responsible government in place following the events of 18th of August. The circumstances in Malii today require that closure be brought to the matter now,” he said.

The President was addressing a meeting convened by him at the Peduase Presidential Lodge to resolve the political stalemate in Mali.

He said it was his belief that a face to face meeting with between the representatives of the ECOWAS Community and the military leaders in Bamako provided the best opportunity to find a resolution to the situation.

He said terrorist were taking advantage of the situation in Mali to flex their muscles even more and thanked the military leader for responding positively to his invitation to the meeting.

The ECOWAS Chair reminded the meeting that today was the day for the military rulers to put in place a government which should respond to the criteria set in August by the bloc.

He said it was unfortunate that the deadline had not been met, but thanked the Malian military rulers for allowing Mr Keita to leave the country to seek medical attention in the United Arab Emirates.

Mali, a country of 20 million people, has been unstable politically since 2012 when soldiers opposed to the response by the government to the separatist insurgency by Tuareg rebels in the country’s north, staged a coup d’etat.

Since then, the political unrest in that country has served as a magnet for al-Qaeda and ISIL-linked groups, who have launched attacks on other West African nations from there, drawing concerns from the 15-member regional bloc.

The recent unrest in the country follows the worsening security situation created by extremist Islamic groups who have leveraged the Tuareg insurgency and local militia that have banded to quell the chaos.

Mali’s leader, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita whose reelection in 2018 was marred by low turnout and allegations of fraud further ignited deep resentment for his government.

He has also been accused of mismanaging the economy and the ongoing insurgency in the north coupled with allegations of corruption.

Since June 2020, numerous protests have been staged for Keita’s resignation, leading to elements of the Malian Armed Forces staging a coup on August 18 2020, forcing the 75 year old leader to resign and dissolve his government, with the Junta promising new elections within a reasonable timeline.

The situation was strongly condemned by the international community including the United Nations, the African Union, as well as ECOWAS, who urged the soldier to return to barracks, release immediately Keita who had been held since his deposition.

ECOWAS further imposed sanctions on Mali and asked neighbouring states to close their land and air borders with that country.

It also gave the military Junta a deadline of September 15 to appoint a new civilian President and Prime Minister.

The Peduase meeting, the first official assigment of President Akufo-Addo after assuming the position as Chairman of the Commission, will consolidate all the mediation efforts by the bloc to return Mali to constitutional rule and prevent further deterioration of the political situation there.
