  • Police to get choppers Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has told Parliament on Thursday, February 20, 2020 that the government is procuring helicopters for the Ghana Police Service.

He said this forms part of efforts to resource the police service well enough to fight crime.

Delivering his fourth state of the nation address to Parliament, Mr. Akufo-Addo said the number of police personnel has also been increased.

“Police numbers have been increased and will be increased further until we meet the recommended ratio. The police has been provided with tools and equipment including over 600 vehicles and incoming helicopters.

“The government will continue to work with the management of the police service to ensure that there is proper and adequate training in modern policing methods and equipping of the service to enable them deal with crime.”

Mr Akufo-Addo further charged the top hierarchy of the police service to work hard to restore public confidence in the law enforcement body.

He said: “Government is committed to improving the conditions of service of all security personnel, including the police, but, nevertheless, I think it is my duty also to put out that the public perception of the police continues not to be the best.

“We must make a comprehensive effort to restore confidence among the public. We cannot run a country of law and order without a well-trained and accomplished police service that has the respect and confidence of the people.

  • Akufo-Addo must punish officials who failed Ghanaians in galamsey fight Suhuyini

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini has urged the President to account for all items seized in the fight against illegal mining.

Already, various bodies have called on the government to provide details on the progress or otherwise made on the fight against galamsey, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), demanding for a public exhibition of the seized excavators.

Alhassan Suhuyini, on the Floor of Parliament on Tuesday, said: “His Excellency the President who boldly put his Presidency on the line to demonstrate how much this course meant to him, if for nothing at all, Mr. Speaker, has his Presidency to save and it will be important that he starts by accounting for and to the people of Ghana all equipment, vehicles, weapons, ammunition and gold which were seized and kept by officers he commissioned to help end illegal mining and if necessary, penalize all who have proven to be negligent or complacent in what may have gone wrong.”

He also urged the House to probe the amount of money released for the fight against illegal mining and whether it was used for the right purpose.

“Mr. Speaker, in the face of what is clearly less than a successful campaign, I suggest humbly that your Parliament also shows more interest in how funds approved for this exercise to the various institutions have truly be expended and the results attained. Because these are funds belonging to the people whose interest we in all humility represent,” he added.

    Similar calls

The NDC has asked the government to account for all excavators and ammunition seized during the Stop Galamsey Campaign.

According to the Communications Director of the party, Sammy Gyamfi, the government had seized 900 excavators during the campaign.

He cited figures in the 2020 budget presented in Parliament to support his claim.

Addressing a press conference on the banks of River Pra at Twifo Praso in the Central Region on Sunday, Mr. Gyamfi challenged the government to make a public presentation on the state of the items.

    Calls for probe

A former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology under the erstwhile Mahama administration, Akwasi Oppong Fosu, has called for an intensive investigation into the missing excavators case.

Mr. Fosu in an interview said an intensive investigation into the matter will bring some finality to the issue.

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council has also thrown its weight behind calls for Akufo-Addo to take a keen interest in the alleged missing excavators and gold saga.

The latest call comes on the back of a similar one made by the Concerned Small Scale Miners.

In an interview with Citi News, General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Emmanuel T. Barrigah said the Council expects that people found culpable in the ongoing investigations will be dealt with.

Meanwhile, the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate alleged corruption in the enforcement of small scale mining laws.

ASEPA wants the Inter-Ministerial Committee against Illegal Mining and the anti-illegal mining task force, Operation Vanguard, to be the focus of the probe by the Special Prosecutor.

In the petition, it highlighted the need for “full investigations into the misappropriation of seized items such as excavators, mining equipment, gold and weapons by the IMCIM through the fight against illegal mining.”

    Background

The missing excavators brouhaha began when Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and also Chairperson for the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), disclosed recently that some of the excavators which were seized from illegal miners between 2017 and 2018 had vanished.

Some members of the Concerned Small Scale Miners Association subsequently revealed that they knew the whereabouts of the missing excavators, with claims that they were being used for galamsey in parts of the country.

The suspended NPP Central Regional Vice Chairman, Ekow Ewusi who was contracted by the government to cart excavators and other vehicles and pieces of equipment seized by Operation Vanguard to designated areas for safekeeping was then seen as a suspect to the case.

A letter sighted by Citi News revealed that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng wrote a letter to the Police CID to investigate him over his alleged involvement in the missing earth-moving equipment.

The Minister for Trade added that “it would also serve as the intermediaries to facilitate the organisation and establishment of the relationship between various actors in these value chains.”

With all districts in the country going to be beneficiaries of the newly constructed and equipped BRCs, Alan Kyerematen stressed that “Ghanaians will begin to understand that this government is serious about developing the private sector at the district level to help us address this challenge of unemployment.”

The operations of the BRCs will be regulated by the National Board for Small-Scale Industries. The 37 District and Municipalities where the BRCs have been constructed are: Ahafo Ano South West, Asante Akim Central Municipal, Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal, Obuasi Municipal, Sekyere East District, Sekyere South, Ejisu Municipal in the Ashanti Region; Asunafo North Municipal, Atebubu-Amantin Municipal, Dormaa Central Municipal, Tano South Municipal, Techiman Municipal in the Brong Ahafo Region.

  • NDC to petition UN to revoke appointment of Akufo-Addo as SDGs co-chair

The NDC at a press conference at the banks of River Pra said President Akufo-Addo has failed to address the very issue of galamsey he has put his office on the line for.

Addressing the media, Communications Officer for the party Sammy Gyamfi said the petition will be ready by Tuesday, February 18, 2020.

“The NDC hereby served notice that in the coming days we shall petition the UN Secretary-General António Guterres to revoke the appointment of President Akufo-Addo as co-chair of the SDGs advocates.”

According to Sammy Gyamfi, the role of the President as a co-chair of the SDGs Advocates required him to protect the water bodies and the environment.

But the President from the various issues of alleged missing excavators and NPP members being given concessions for illegal mining when there was a ban on small scale mining show that he is unfit for the role.

“That petition will be ready by Tuesday because President has failed to show genuine commitment to the fight against illegal mining and the protection of the environment in his own backyard, his corrupt government has become an active enabler and promoter of galamsey and destruction of the environment in a way that affronts the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, he is a bad example not worthy for emulation and he has proven to be unfit for the prestigious position of a co-chair of the SDGs advocates for this reason he must be removed without delay..”

  • Abolish death penalty Amnesty International to Akufo-Addo

Amnesty International (AI) has made a strong case to President Akufo-Addo, for the abolishing of the death penalty from the Statute books of the country.

It is the position of Amnesty International Ghana that the country can achieve over ninety-five (95%) of the abolition of the death penalty without a constitutional amendment.

Addressing the President at the Jubilee House when a delegation led by the Director of Amnesty International Ghana, Robert Akoto Amoafo, paid a courtesy call on him, a member of the Delegation and well known Ghanaian lawyer, Martin Kpebu, noted that legal authority for capital punishment in Ghana can be found in six instances in the Statute books of the country.

The 1992 Constitution, specifically, Article 3(3) which states as follows, “Any person who (a) by himself or in concert with others by any violent or other unlawful means, suspends or overthrows or abrogates this Constitution or any part of it, or attempts to do any such act; or (b) aids and abets in any manner any person referred to in paragraph (a) of this clause; commits the offence of high treason and shall, upon conviction, be sentenced to suffer death” is the first instance. The remaining five (5) instances are all in an ordinary Act of Parliament, The Criminal and Other Offences Act 1960, (Act 29) and specifically sections 46, 49, 49A, 180, 194 and 317A, which can easily be amended.

“Our submission is that to the extent that section 46 which is on murder and that is by far overwhelmingly the commonest offence that the death penalty is given today is in an ordinary Act of Parliament, all that we have to do is to Amend section 46 and the other sections of Act 29” Martin Kpebu said.

“Even though we know that for a long time now Ghana does not execute a person on death roll, but your excellency, the conditions, the solitary confinement is practically mental torture. I have been to Nsawam a couple of times and it is not a good sight to behold” Mr Kpebu added.

    Improving prison conditions

Another member of the Delegation, Mr. Samuel Agbotsey, addressing the issue of “improving prison conditions”, indicated that the issue of overcrowding in Ghanaian prisons is a matter of International concern. Amnesty International Mr. Agbotsey said is calling on government to take immediate steps to improve prison conditions in Ghana. He urged government to take steps to actualize its plans regarding building two prison service hospitals in the Southern and Northern sectors of the country as contained in the 2016 manifesto of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

    President Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo in response to the arguments of the Amnesty International Ghana delegation noted that the concern about the death penalty in the Statute books of Ghana is a genuine one that must be resolved.

“The solution that you are proposing is an ingenious one. To the extent that five out of six offences can, in fact, be dealt with by statutory enactments is something that the Attorney General and Minister for the Interior and other security agencies in the country will put their heads around the idea and bring some suggestions to us in cabinet for a decision” President Akufo-Addo stated.

The President further signaled to the delegation that all the other issues they tabled such as the Advancing of Non-Custodial Sentencing in Ghana, Improvement of prison conditions, and the ratification of some three international protocols; the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, aimed at the abolition of the death penalty, the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED), and Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, will all be addressed and dealt with appropriately.

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people who take injustice personally. They campaign for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all.

They are independent of any political ideology, economic interest or religion. They investigate and expose the facts, whenever and wherever abuses happen as well as lobby governments, and other powerful groups such as companies to make sure they keep their promises and respect international law.

  • Provide us a district hospital Chiefs of Bosome Freho to Akufo-Addo

The Chiefs and Elders of Bosome Freho District in the Ashanti Region have made a passionate appeal to the President to build a district hospital for their Traditional Area to augment the efforts of the two clinics built for Bosome Freho by the Busia government as far back as 1970.

The Chiefs and elders of Bosome Freho made the appeal at the Jubilee House when they paid a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo on the 14th of February 2020 led by the District Chief Executive of Bosome Freho, Yaw Danso.

Former Member of Parliament for the Bosome Freho Constituency, Gabriel Yaw Amoah, addressing the President on behalf of the Delegation noted that health care is a major challenge in Bosome Freho due to the lack of a modern health facility apart from the two clinics that were built in the District during the Busia administration.

The Bosome Freho delegation further requested that government through the Ministry of Education should give urgent consideration to building a new Senior High School in their traditional area. He indicated that the Constituency currently has only one Secondary school which is not able to meet the educational needs of the entire community.

“We plead with you Mr. President to do everything possible to provide us with one secondary school,” Mr. Amoah said.

President Akufo-Addo in his response to the requests by the Chiefs and Elders of Bosome Freho noted that their concerns bother on issues that are very dear to his heart particularly on the issue of education.

“I get surprised when people criticize former Prime Minister Busia. In just two years and four months in office, he built clinics in virtually every town in the country and yet people talk so bitterly about him. I think my administration must do everything possible to build on his legacy in Bosome Freho” President Akufo-Addo stated.

On the issue of availability of secondary education in Bosome Freho and its environs, President Akufo-Addo said he is very much taken aback that only one secondary school serves the entire area.

“I am surprised that a place like Bosome Freho has only one secondary school. We have to deal with it immediately,” President Akufo-Addo said.

    Bosome Freho district

The Bosome Freho District is one of the twenty-seven (27) Districts in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Its capital is Asiwa. The District is among the new Districts and Municipalities that were created in 2008 by the then President, John Kufuor. The District has only one Senior High School, Bosome Senior High Technical School, a District Magistrate Court at Asiwa, the Asiwa Health Centre and a Police Station. According to the 2010 Population Census of the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), the population of Bosome Freho stood at 60,397.

  • Implementation of free SHS has improved but challenges remain – PIAC

The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has observed that despite the gains recorded in the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy, some challenges remain outstanding.

The independent statutory body – which is mandated to promote transparency and accountability in the management of petroleum revenues in Ghana – released its 2020 report Tuesday on the “2018-2019 Free SHS monitoring” where it made its observations on the policy known.

    Some positive observations

According to PIAC, the Free SHS policy has resulted in a timelier reporting of students to school, compared to the period preceding Free SHS.

“Students no longer have to wait for school fees to be provided them before reporting to school,” PIAC observed.

On the supply of textbooks for Core Subjects, PIAC said they were provided in adequate quantities, albeit late in some instances.

The Free SHS programme has also led to increased enrollment in 41 percent of the schools PIAC visited, the report said, wrote adding that the enrollment of girls, in particular, has increased.

    Concerns

On the quality and timeliness of supplies, PIAC observed that “poor quality and unwholesomeness of some supplies, delays in supply of food and other items, and under or oversupply of some food items and provisions were pretty widespread.”

“The abolition of cut-off grades in the admission of students has led to a situation of dumping of poor-grade students in schools, particularly deprived schools,” the report said.

One of the major concerns PIAC observed textbooks for elective subjects were not covered by the policy.

“However, this has not been clearly communicated to parents by government, leading to a situation where some parents are refusing to take responsibility for the purchase of these textbooks for their wards. This situation is negatively impacting on the quality of teaching and learning in the schools,” they wrote.

    Recommendations

Among its recommendations, the anti-graft body encouraged “vigilance on the part of school authorities in monitoring the quality of supplies, such as inspecting the expiry dates among others.”

This, they said “will prevent the suppliers from using the schools as dumping grounds.”

“In order to avoid the recurrence of over and undersupply of food items, the supply of food items by the Buffer Stock Company should be based on orders from the schools,” PIAC added.

They also recommended that government ensures “disbursements to the schools are done expeditiously as the non-free SHS students phase out, to avoid closure of the schools and disruptions to the academic calendar.”

In improving quality of SHS students PIAC said “the Ghana Education Service should pay more attention to the basic schools to improve the quality of students for the second cycle schools.”

  • ”If You Refuse To Vote For Akufo-Addo In 2020, You Are A Witch” Owusu Bempah(Video)

Controversial Ghanaian pastor, Rev Isaac Owusu Bempah has said that anyone who will refuse to vote for president Akuffo Addo in the 2020 election is a witch.

According to the leader and founder of the Glorious Word and Power Ministry, whoever refuses to vote for President Akufo-Addo is a witch because he cannot fathom why a level-headed person will refuse to vote for him considering his great works.

Rev Owusu Bempah who is an ardent supporter of the New Patriotic Party commended Akufo-Addo for commissioning and distributing 307 ambulances to various constituencies across the country.

“2020 if you refuse to vote for Nana Addo then you are a witch or wizard. If you refuse to vote Nana Addo then you are possessed by the witchcraft of your family or what is tormenting you is great” Rev Owusu Bempah told his congregation during a church service.

“Nana Addo has done well…he has initiated one district one factory, free SHS and others. I would have been grateful if he was as young as 40 years old so he could rule for 20 years. Ghana would have developed better. Some people have crisscrossed and spoilt the plan” He added.

Rev Owusu Bempah indicated that there will be no way Mahama will ever get the opportunity to become the President of Ghana again.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has renewed calls for African nations to commit greater zeal and resources to trading among themselves, saying the low level of intra-Africa trade will not build a sound foundation for the continent’s prosperity.

The two-day event was under the theme: Accessing the African Common Market through Ghana -Technology, Digitisation and Industrialisation.

This comes at the heels of the just-ended UK-Africa Summit.

The President pointed out that contemporary international business challenges require more vigorous business deals among African states, in the areas of technology, digitisation and industry to enhance their prosperity and also ensure the welfare of future generations. “So, let us now think differently and position ourselves for serious business, rather than relying on the export of raw materials all the times,” he added.

Nana Akufo-Addo said that Ghana was responding positively towards that challenge, adding that the country’s key economic indicators were pointing into the right direction. “We are accelerating the structural transformation of the economy and also educating the youth with a strong sense of entrepreneurship for nation building,” he told the summit.

  • Akufo-Addo was misled, none of us has received any payment – Private Healthcare providers

The Upper East Regional Chapter of the Private Healthcare Providers Association has dismissed claims that they were paid five months arrears this year.

According to them, President Akufo-Addo’s comment that the government has settled five months arrears owed healthcare providers under the National Health Insurance Scheme for the year 2019 is not true.

The President at the recent media engagement said the government has paid NHIS claims up to the month of May 2019.

But members of the region said none of their members has been paid the said claims.

The immediate past regional president of Private Healthcare Providers Association Thomas Moh in an interview with Citi FM said the President was misled.

“This most of the Private Healthcare Providers have received only one-month payment and they are some who have not received even one month this year, and if anyone doubts I can give you the number of private healthcare providers and find out from them, so it is not true.”

Private healthcare providers give Gov’t 2-weeks ultimatum to pay NHIA debt

Private healthcare providers in the country in August gave the government a 2-week ultimatum to pay the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) debts owed them.

According to the private companies, known as the Responsive Healthcare Service Providers Association of Ghana and the Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana, the debts owed them accrued over a 10-month period.

The Association said the inability of the government to meet their demands will force them to drag the NHIA to court.

According to executives of both groups, their members have been dragged to court by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Social Security National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) due to their inability to fulfill their obligations to these regulatory agencies while their monies are locked up with the NHIA.

Read: Cash and carry returns from December 16

    The Executive Director for the Responsive Healthcare Services of Ghana, Joseph Christian Amoah who addressed a news conference in Kumasi said;

“Our members are being taken to court by GRA, SSNIT and other regulatory authorities. We are in the procurement business and we deduct from source and for 10 months to a year a provider is not reimbursed and as a result of this ill act, it happens that our members are financially bankrupt. Some are ill, others are dead, others are threatening to shut down. It does not enhance the private government partnership in health. We are giving the government two weeks to advise NHIA to pay for for us. We will perhaps meet with our counsel and test the law.”

  • 2020 polls: ‘Muslims can’t keep allowing themselves to be used for violence’ Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has charged Muslim youth in the country not to allow politicians to engage them for acts of violence before, during and after the upcoming national elections in December 2020.

Addressing the Tijaniya Muslim Council of Ghana at a ceremony held at the Trade Fair Main Auditorium to inaugurate the National and Greater Accra Regional Executives of the Council under the theme: “Religious Tolerance, The Panacea For Peaceful Coexistence”, President Akufo-Addo admonished Muslim youth not to permit unguarded politicians to use them to carry out acts of instability and violence.

“To you the young people of the Jalo fraternity, I advise you to take the guidance of your Sheikhs seriously”. “Muslim youth cannot continue to be the ones who are used for violent purposes. I want to make this appeal to you: in 2020, do not allow yourselves to be used by irresponsible politicians to engage in acts of destabilisation and violence”, President Akufo-Addo stated.

    Islam and Extremism

The President further noted in his speech that the world over, people seem to be associating Islam with violence, terrorism and acts of aggression and, thus, urged the youth of the Jalo fraternity and all Muslims to change the narrative and showcase the positive and peace-loving size of Islam.

“It is for you to rescue Islam from the extremist whose activities around the world, seem to be defining Islam”, President Akufo-Addo noted. “Islam, in the 21st Century, is at the crossroad. It is a sad commentary on the religious of peace that today, it is credited with being responsible for the acts of radicalism, extremism, violence and destabilisation taking place around the world by the likes of Al-Qaeda, and Boko Haram”, President Akufo-Addo indicated.

“It has often been said that it is the silence of the righteous that allows evil to triumph. Let peace-loving Muslims speak up. Let our youth shun violence, let our youth seek the path of knowledge”, President Akufo-Addo added.

  • We cant construct all roads in Ghana Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has stated that even though his Government has declared 2020 as the year of roads, not all roads in the country will be constructed.

That, he said, was because the country does not have enough funds to construct all roads nationwide.

  • Akufo-Addo must save our internet data now – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is blaming the government for contributing to the hikes in the cost of internet data in Ghana.

The NDC in a press conference today December 12, 2019, which was addressed by Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Sam George said prior to the 50% increase in the CST tax consumers were not complaining but as soon as government introduced the 50% this made telecommunication companies also adjust their charges and that led to the upfront deduction.

He said once the government directed the telcos to stop the upfront deduction, data runs faster without the knowledge of the consumer because telcos have also increased their charges and the deduction is done at the blind side of the consumer.

Read:Akufo-Addo, NPP feel betrayed by Mahama, NDC Report

This he says the blame should be laid at the doorstep of the government and not the telcos.

“The future of the communication space looks bleak under the NPP, we are calling on President Akufo-Addo to immediately withdraw the 50% increase in CST, the trade of non-expiry of data and tariff increases has disadvantaged the Ghanaian more. President Akufo-Addo must save our data now, he must stop raiding our pocket for private gains, his own people said ‘One bad term deserves an exit’ so we can’t give him another four years”

The Communication Service Tax which was introduced in 2008 was pegged at a rate of 6 percent payable by consumers of certain electronic communication services — but the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta in his mid-year budget announced a 50 percent increment in the CST rate.

  • Akufo-Addo calls for end to stigmatisation of infertility

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for the elimination of stigma associated with infertility in Africa.

He said from being abandoned, depressed, humiliated, insulted and maltreated, women suffered the most when it came to issues of infertility.

    Read: D. K. Poison petitions Akufo-Addo

Quoting a World Health Organisation (WHO) source, the President added that “even though infertility in men is the cause of 50 per cent of cases of a couple’s inability to conceive, the economic, psychological, social and cultural burdens fall disproportionately on women”.

President Akufo-Addo made the call at the 6th Merck Africa Asia Luminary and the Second Merck Foundation annual conference in Accra yesterday, on the theme: “Together for a better future”.

Ten African First Ladies are attending the two-day conference, which also attracted about 1,000 participants, including policy makers, academics, researchers and healthcare experts from 58 countries around the world.

Merck Foundation is the philanthropic wing of Merck KGaA Germany, whose work includes the improvement of the health and wellbeing of people through science and technology.

    Findings

According to the WHO, 186 million people around the world experienced either primary or secondary infertility, with Africa being the continent with the highest birth rate, while some countries in Central and Eastern Africa were also described as “the infertility belt of the world”.

It said in Ethiopia, 85 per cent of childless marriages ended up in divorce within a period of five years, while in Tanzania “a childless widow may not inherit her husband’s wealth”.

And in Ghana, the President said, an infertile woman was treated as an outcast, often leading to the end of the marriage.

According to President Akufo-Addo, factors that led to infertility, whether anatomical or genetic, were not those that women wished for themselves, saying there might be other factors such as infection in the reproductive system and poor health practices, which, he said, were preventable.

The President further called for the incorporation of issues regarding infertility, prevention and its treatment into the maternal and reproductive healthcare policies of African countries.

He also stressed the need to train more gynaecologists and embryologists and to also make available and affordable, assisted reproductive technology, commonly referred to as in vitro fertilisation (IVF), to women facing infertility issues on the continent.

    Awareness creation

The President said in working to confront issues of infertility in Ghana, the country was also raising awareness of disease prevention and improvement of access to quality and equitable health services.

“We are focusing on the prevention and treatment of non-communicable and communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, sickle cell, asthma and cancer, which are estimated to account for more deaths than those occasioned by communicable diseases,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo said Ghana was also working with Novartis Foundation, a drug manufacturing company, to pilot the use of information and communications technology (ICT) innovation in the management of hypertension.

He said through the use of ICT, patients now received SMS messages on the treatment of their ailments on their mobile phones.

President Akufo-Addo commended his wife, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, for the work she was doing in the fields of culture, education and healthcare delivery in the country.

Read: I made Ghana the fastest-growing economy not Akufo-Addo Mahama

    Platform

Mrs Akufo-Addo, who is co-chairing the conference, said for the past five years, Merck Luminary had provided a platform for scientific discussions, which, she said, had contributed to raising awareness of diabetes, fertility, cancer and other diseases.

She said blaming, mocking and shunning of perceived infertile couples must cease, adding that it was the responsibility of everyone to empower infertile couples.

“Fight against stigmatisation, change mindset, influence national policies on fertility and build fertility care capacity in Africa and developing countries,” Mrs Akufo-Addo said.

    Contribution

The Chairperson of Merck Foundation and Chief Executive Officer of Merck Africa Asia Luminary, Dr Rasha Kelej, said the organisation had been providing specialist training for cancer treatment specialists in countries which did not have personnel with such skills.

She said the organisation had so far trained more than 70 cancer specialists,140 fertility specialists and over 100 diabetes specialists in Africa and Asia.

  • Akufo-Addo held secret meetings with MCC in US Asiedu Nketia alleges

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia has alleged that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo held not less than three meetings with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) in the US.
But he stated that the outcome of those meetings were kept away from the good people of Ghana.

Addressing journalists in Accra on Thursday, October 17, Mr Asiedu Nketia said the meeting was to soothe the otherwise damning consequences of the allocation of the power compact that saw the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) taken over by the Power Distribution Services (PDS) in a deal that was later suspended.

Paga chiefs thank Akufo-Addo for CK Tedam

The NDC scribe said after his return from the US meetings, President Akufo-Addo charged the Energy Minister, John-Peter Amewu, and his deputies as well as leadership of ECG to hold meetings with Manila Electric Company, popularly known as Meralco, over the botched deal.

Mr Asiedu Nketia said he found it ironical for the Energy Minister to accept the offer to travel to the Philippines to meet a company he had described as “fraudulent” at the peak of the controversy that surrounded the suspension of the PDS deal.

He said the NDC has been astounded by the emergence of a new company, Meridian Power Ventures, which is claiming a 30 per cent stake in PDS.

According to him, this can only be the result of a secret transaction that neither Parliament nor Ghanaians as a whole know about.

“This shows that our constitution has been trampled upon,” he said in Akan.

We will not leave until we see Akufo-Addo Aggrieved Gold Coast customers

He demanded that the Akufo-Addo-led government should immediately explain to Ghanaians how come Hong Kong-based Meridian Power Ventures has taken over from Philippines-based Meralco to the extent that the former is calling on foreign shareholders to hold an emergency board meeting.

The NDC gave not only the president but also Vice President Dr Mahumudu Bawumia, Energy Minister Amewu and Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta 24 hours to explain to Ghanaians the emergence of Meridian Power Ventures, a company Mr Asiedu alleged was registered just four months ago.

  • Akufo-Addo ‘plagiarising’ projects in Ashanti Region NDC

The Ashanti Regional caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a swipe at President Nana Akufo-Addo over what they describe as his inspection of plagiarised and petty projects in his just-ended tour of the region.

At a press conference organised by the Deputy Communication Officer of the party, Abass Nurudeen, the NDC called on the President to give proof of projects done in the region under his watch.

Akufo-Addo to launch NABCO Skills and Talent Academy

“Ladies and gentlemen of the press, we in the NDC thought President Akufo-Addo was an expert only in the plagiarism of speeches; we never knew he plagiarises projects, too. A timber processing factory that was established in 2010, MIRO FORESTRY COMPANY LIMITED, in the Sekyere Afram Plains, was recommissioned by President Akufo-Addo under the 1D1F programme. The President must immediately answer the following questions in his attempt to expropriate this particular project:

“How on earth can a private company that was established in 2010, all of a sudden metamorphose into a 1D1F programme that supposedly started in 2017?

“What has become of the promise by President Akufo-Addo to build a brand-new Corn Flakes factory for the people of Sekyere Afram Plains?”

SIM re-registration: Too much queuing under Akufo-Addo Boamah

According to Mr Nurudeen, the Ashanti Region has been abandoned after voting massively for the NPP to win power.

“The President’s tour has ended, and inhabitants of the Ashanti Region are still struggling to figure out exactly what he inspected. In the estimation of the people of the Ashanti Region, these are projects that should ordinarily be within the domain of Assemblymembers and never ever catch presidential attention. After three years in government, the people of the Ashanti Region would not be asking for too much if they demand from President Akufo-Addo legacy and life-impacting projects,” he said.

A 72-year-old trader of the Kumasi Central market, Madam Akosua Serwaa has petitioned the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to consider suspending the roll out of the 2nd phase of the Kejetia project.

She wants the commencement of the 2nd phase of the project suspended till Christmas is over to enable them earn a livelihood when demand and clientele are expected to soar.

Madam Akosua Serwaa, on behalf of the larger trading community at the Kumasi Central Market, has suggested that the government goes about the second phase of systematically rolling out the project step by step, in order to save lives and protect the economic empowerment of the traders at a time trading is viable.

The redevelopment of the Kumasi Central Market at €248 million is being financed by the Deutsche Bank of Germany, with export credit guarantee from the United Kingdom Export Finance (UKEF) for which the President and the Asantehene jointly cut the sod in May this year.

Messrs Contracta from the United Kingdom have 48-months to complete the second phase of the project which is expected to house 6,500 leasable commercial spaces, 5,400closed stores; 800 kiosks, 50 restaurants and 210 fishmonger and butcher stores, 40 livestock stores, among others.

The project, according to the President, is expected to provide 900 direct jobs and 2,500 indirect jobs to improve the lot of residents.

But Madam Serwaa observed that, the project, if rolled out, will displace traders and would add to the hardship of the traders and make life unbearable for them as Christmas approaches.

According to her, trading is the main livelihood of a greater number of residents and that any activity and programme that tend to affect their source of income and livelihood is bound to endanger their lives.

“The situation could even be chaotic if the traders are not properly resettled after the relocation”.

She noted that the exercise would affect the commercial activities and livelihood of the traders when thousands are expected to throng Kumasi for commercial activities.

She said it is now evidently clear that most of the traders are facing difficulties in raising the required premium in payment for the occupation of stores to be allocated at the Kejetia market against the fact that most of the traders cannot raise the premium to finalise allocation processes for occupation.

She said the prevailing situation currently is tension and fear, especially when traders are uncertain when the relocation exercise begins and where they would be resettled.

The old lady feared traders might not be properly resettled as it happened to those who were relocated in 2015 and are yet to be relocated.

Madam Serwaa said besides the unforeseen and inherent hardships, any move, contrary to the expectations of the traders would make the government unpopular and affect the electoral fortunes of the ruling party in the region.

The petitioner disclosed that traders are already seething with anger following the unbearable situation created by the displacement of traders at the Kejetia since 2015, and are threatening to boycott the 2020 elections if they are not properly resettled.

It is against this background that Madam Serwaa is urging government to hasten slowly in implementing the 2nd phase of the Kejetia project and suspend the commencement of the 2nd phase of the project till Christmas is over, to enable them adjust and adapt to the situation.

She called for combined presidential and royal efforts to address the issue and hoped that the swift intervention of the President and His Royal Majesty will help resolve the issue and save lives from the current tensed situation.

Madam Serwaa, however, assured the President of the commitment of traders to supporting the government and traditional authority to sustain the economic empowerment of traders and Ghanaians in general.
