Ajax sack Schreuder after failing to win seven games

After a string of disappointing results, Alfred Schreuder was fired as head coach of Ajax.

After Erik ten Hag left for Manchester United at the end of the previous campaign, Schreuder took over as the team’s manager. At first, Schreuder seemed to fit in well in Amsterdam, winning his first six league games and hammering Rangers 4-0 in Ajax’s opening Champions League match of the year.

However, the Eredivisie’s form also suffered greatly as a result of their elimination from the Champions League group stage; they had not won a league match since October, even though that time period also included a break for the 2022 World Cup.

The club opted to take action following Thursday’s 1-1 home draw with struggling Volendam after failing to win any of their previous seven Eredivisie games (D6 L1), putting them fifth in the standings, seven points behind leaders Feyenoord.

The current winless streak is Ajax’s joint-longest in Eredivisie history (also seven in 1962, 1964 and 1965).

A statement from the Dutch giants read: “The many points lost and the team’s lack of development are the main reasons for this decision.

“The club management no longer has confidence in further cooperation.”

Matthias Kaltenbach, an assistant coach, was also fired, according to Ajax.

The club’s chief executive Edwin van der Sar added: “It is a painful decision, but also a necessary one.

“After a good start to the season, we then lost an unnecessary number of points… In recent weeks it became increasingly clear that [Schreuder] could not turn the tide, while we believe that despite the many transfers he had a strong and championship worthy squad at his disposal.

“We have also lost a lot of points in recent weeks and unfortunately we did not see any progress.”

  • Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder applauds Kudus Mohammed for performance at World Cup

The manager of Ajax, Alfred Schreuder has praised Ghanaian sensation Kudus Mohammed for his performance in the 2022 World Cup.

Despite the Black Stars’ early elimination from the World Cup in the Asian nation, the 22-year-old performed exceptionally well.

The former FC Nordjaelland star who had a magnificent debut World Cup, scored two goals and provided an assist in three matches.

Kudus has been deployed as a false number 9 at the Dutch giants this season and has flourished.

In an interview, Alfred Schreuder asserted it is nice to see the in-form midfielder scoring goals at the mundial for his country, saying he looks more like an attacker than a midfielder.

“It is nice to see that Mohammed has also scored his goals for Ghana. He already did that for us before the World Cup.” he said.

“I said from the start that he looks more like an attacker to me, who is very difficult to defend. This is partly because we have a lot of good midfielders.”

Kudus Mohammed has become a subject of interest for several clubs following his outstanding performance for the Black Stars at the World Cup.

  • It’s a big headache – Ajax coach on Brobbey and Mohammed Kudus selection

Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder admitted selection headache between Brian Brobbey and Mohammed Kudus.

Before the start of the season, Brobbey was the preferred choice, relegating the Ghanaian midfielder to the bench.

But the former FC Nordjaelland Star who was given his first start in early September proved his worth to maintain his place in the team.

In the last two games, the in-form Ghana international position at Ajax has come under threat due to the recent form of Brian Brobbey.

Kudus has been dropped to the bench at the Dutch giants in the last two games in favour of Brian Brobbey, who has responded so well by scoring four goals.

Ajax face a must-win match against Liverpool on Wednesday in the Champions League, and of the game, Schreuder was asked about the Brobbey-Kudus situation and he said, “Kudus or Brobbey? It’s always a difficult choice. But we are very satisfied with the development of Brobbey in the past few weeks.”

Ajax are third in Group A at the Champions League and desperately need a win against Liverpool to keep their round of 16 hopes alive.

  • Leicester City targets to sign Mohammed Kudus – Report

Ghanaian midfielder, Mohammed Kudus, is now a target for Leicester City, according to Ghanasoccernet.com.

Before the transfer window closes, the 2016 English champions are considering bringing the Ajax midfielder on board.

GHANASoccernet.com can reveal that the Foxes are set to open talks with the wantaway Ajax star after a slow start to their season.

Leicester City is yet to win a game after three matches, losing two and drawing one in the new campaign.

And with reports linking star midfielder James Madison to Arsenal, Mohammed Kudus seems the ideal replacement for Brendan Rogers’ team.

Mohammed Kudus wants to leave after playing just 24 minutes of the season in the Dutch Eredivisie and with Leicester showing interest, the midfielder could make a dream move to the English Premier League.

Despite having a great pre-season, coach Alfred Schreuder prefers Dusan Tadic over the Ghanaian midfielder.

Mohammed Kudus joined Ajax in 2020 and has won two Eredivisie titles and the KNVB Johan Cryuff Cup.

  • Antony left out for Ajax but Man Utd situation has not changed

Alfred Schreuder says there has been no change of stance at Ajax over Antony’s future, with the Manchester United target again left out of their squad.

Antony missed last week’s win over Sparta Rotterdam and on Sunday was absent once more as Ajax faced Utrecht.

The Brazil forward is a target for United, who have reportedly had several bids turned down for the 22-year-old, with speculation on Friday claiming a £76million (€89.4m) offer was rejected.

In an interview with journalist Fabrizio Romano, Antony pleaded with Ajax to sell him for “the highest bid ever for a player in the Eredivisie”, as he explained he had made his desire to leave clear to the club earlier in 2022.

Antony’s public request has not seemingly had the desired impact just yet, with the Eredivisie champions said to be holding out for a fee of £85m (€100m).

Speaking to reporters prior to the Utrecht match, Ajax head coach Schreuder said: “The situation is the same. We discuss this internally, also with the player.

“The situation has not changed. He [is] at the club, we talked about it.”

Schreuder did, however, suggest Ajax are readying themselves for life without Antony, by adding: “I want to focus on the guys who will be there.”

  • Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder unaware of Everton interest in Kudus Mohammed

Ajax coach, Alfred Schreuder has revealed that there are no talks between his outfit and Everton over the signing of Kudus Mohammed.

Reports emerged last week the 21-year-old could be on his way to Goodison Park this summer due to lack of playing time.

However, Schreuder has denied such reports insisting Mohammed Kudus will be staying at Ajax.

“I think he should not leave,” he told Voetbal International after the game between Ajax and Sparta Rotterdam.

“You can see that he is important. We need a lot of good players,” he continued adding I haven’t heard anything yet.”

The former FC Nordsjaelland playmaker came on as a second-half substitute in the 1-0 victory on the road, playing the final twenty minutes.

Mohammed Kudus has an outstanding pre-season, scoring three goals in three games before netting the Dutch Super Cup game against PSV.

Despite his rich run of form, the Black Stars ace only makes the bench at Ajax.

  • Ajax boss Schreuder ‘not afraid’ of losing Man Utd transfer target Antony

Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder says he is not worried about losing star winger Antony to Manchester United this summer.

The Premier League side are trying to sign the Brazil international from the Eredivisie champions, who are determined to hold on to him.

Ajax do not need to cash in on the 22-year-old, having already received big money by selling Lisandro Martinez to United, as well as Sebastien Haller to Borussia Dortmund, Ryan Gravenberch to Bayern Munich and Nicolas Tagliafico to Lyon.

What did Schreuder say about Antony’s future?

Schreuder does not expect Antony to follow his former team-mates out the door at the Johan Cruijff ArenA this summer, but admits he cannot guarantee he will stay put.

Quizzed on the Brazilian’s future after Ajax’s 3-1 friendly win over Shakhtar Donetsk, Schreuder told Voetbal International: “I am not afraid of anything. We know that we have very good players and we assume that the selection stays together. You never know for sure.”

    Will Antony join Man Utd?

United have been working on the signing of Antony throughout the summer transfer window.

The ex-Sao Paulo player’s agent travelled to Europe at the end of last season to conduct talks with the Old Trafford club with the aim of finalising a move to England.

While Antony is keen to join up with ex-Ajax boss Erik ten Hag at United, the Dutch club are eager to hold onto him for at least one more year.

GOAL understands Ajax would be willing to part ways with Antony for a fee of around €80 million (£68m/$82m), but United are not prepared to go higher than €60m (£51m/$61m).

Antony, who has scored 22 goals in 78 appearances since moving to Amsterdam, still has three years left on his contract with the Eredivisie side.
