Asanteman is set to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reign of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in the year 2024.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II ascended to the throne on April 26, 1999, succeeding the late Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, who passed away in February 1999.
Throughout 2024, Manhyia Palace has planned a series of events and programs to commemorate Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s silver jubilee. The schedule, shared by pro-Manhyia social media outlet, The Asante Nation, includes the following activities:
- February 6, 2024 – Observing the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War through a symposium at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). A book titled “History of Asante” will also be launched.
2. February 8, 2024 – Kuntunkuni Dwabo or Black Durbar at Dwabrem in the Manhyia Palace, commemorating the Sagrenti War. The first batch of artefacts, recovered from the Fowler Museum, will be officially presented.
3. March 30, 2024 – Clean-up exercise in all traditional areas of Asanteman with a concurrent decongestion exercise in parts of Kumasi.
4. April 21, 2024 – Religious feast for all fetish priests in Asanteman at the Bogyawe grounds in the Manhyia Palace.
5. April 24, 2024 (Awukudae) – Feast for ethnic groups in Asanteman, followed by a Grand Durbar for Asantehene and the ethnic groups.
6. April 25, 2024 – Fireworks activities in selected parts of Kumasi and a musical jam at Jubilee Park.
7. April 26, 2024 – Non-denominational thanksgiving service marking exactly 25 years of distinguished leadership at Dwabrem grounds, followed by a fundraising dinner for the Otumfuo Foundation.
8. May 6, 2024 – 75th Birthday of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, with a Mini Durbar and thanksgiving ceremony at the Cyprian Church.
9. May 10, 2024 – Mega musical concert in Kumasi featuring Asante musicians.
10. May 12, 2024 – Grand Silver Jubilee Durbar (Akwasidae-Kese) at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, with dignitaries from around the world in attendance.
11. November 24, 2024 – Lecture and symposium to mark the 100th anniversary of the return of Prempeh I from Seychelles Island, commemorating the leader’s threat to the British after his exile in 1896.
