Seven nabbed over suspected use of sudan dye in palm oil

The alleged adulteration of palm oil with a substance believed to be Sudan dye has led to the arrest of seven (7) traders in Koforidua, Eastern Region.

The suspects were apprehended following a joint operation conducted by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the police on Friday, April 17.

Earlier monitoring exercises conducted by the FDA on palm oil samples collected from markets in Koforidua had linked two of the suspects to products contaminated with the dye last year.

In 2024, the Food and Drugs Authority issued a strong warning to consumers about the need for extreme caution when buying palm oil due to ongoing concerns about adulteration.

The alert highlighted the FDA’s continued battle against the presence of hazardous substances, particularly the banned ‘Sudan Four’ dye, which has been found in some palm oil products on the market.

This industrial dye, which is prohibited in food products due to its cancer-causing properties, poses a significant health threat to consumers.

Roderick Daddey-Adjei, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, voiced serious concern about the ongoing issue despite the Authority’s strict enforcement measures.

While progress has been made in reducing the amount of contaminated palm oil, Daddey-Adjei stressed that any level of contamination remains unacceptable.

He warned that those responsible for such practices are still active and assured that the FDA, alongside the police, is taking firm action against them, including arrests.

“But we are still not happy about that small percentage that is there, which means that people who perpetrated the activity are still lurking in the dark. And we also want to also let those who think that they can come back and keep on doing this, that their days are numbered. Because already with this one that we even did, we did some arrests, we have handed them over to the police.”

Ghana’s oil palm exports declined by more than 50% in 2024, according to the Oil Palm Development Association of Ghana (OPDAG).

The association’s president, Samuel Avaala, attributes this sharp downturn to insufficient government backing and the influx of cheaper foreign alternatives, which have put immense pressure on local producers.

Speaking with Joy Business, Mr Avaala made a strong appeal for protective measures to safeguard the domestic oil palm industry.
He urged the government to take decisive action against the uncontrolled importation of foreign palm oil, which continues to undercut local businesses.

“We want to develop it ourselves, and it is in a state where we are not going to be competitive compared to our neighbors. Let’s play it safe. It’s around 50%. But in recent times, what has happened is that it is probably crossing the 50% mark, leaving the local side to take less than 50%,” he said.

The association stressed the urgency of investing in local production capacity to close the widening gap in palm oil supply. Avaala underscored the importance of sound policy measures, exchange rate stability, and efficient liquidity management, stating that a more favorable economic environment would bolster growth in the sector.

Ghana’s annual palm oil consumption stands at approximately 450,000 metric tons, largely driven by demand for vegetable oil.
However, domestic production accounts for only 300,000 metric tons, resulting in a substantial 150,000 metric ton deficit that is met through imports.

W/R: Police nab 5 suspects in connection with armed robbery incident at Chinese firm

Five suspects have been nabbed by the police for the involvement in an armed robbery incident at a Chinese heavy-duty machinery company, Velotop Co. Ltd at Malta, a suburb of Asankrangwa in the Amenfi West Municipal Assembly.

The group reportedly invaded the premises of the machinery company with pump-action guns, a pistol, and machetes on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at about 7:20 p.m. They allegedly made way with GHS 200,000 after holding workers of the company hostage.

The vehicle of the suspects, a black Toyota Voxy vehicle with registration number GS 576-25 was intercepted at a checkpoint during an inspection by the police.

One iPhone 13 mobile phone, one Nokia C300 mobile phone, one Villooan mobile phone, two CCTV camera decoders, three pairs of handcuffs, two pump action guns, 14 AA cartridges, and cash amounting to GHS 198,200 were retrieved by the police during the inspection.

Meanwhile, the police has revealed that efforts are underway to arrest the leader of the gang and any other accomplices.

Last month, the gang leader, Eric Acheampong Adu, in a robbery incident at Ohwim Tigo Junction in Kumasi, has been confirmed dead.

Addressing the media on Monday, February 23, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, disclosed that the deceased, who is specialised in the snatching of pickup and Land Cruiser vehicles, sustained gunshot wounds during the operation with the police and later passed on.

The IGP noted “Suspect Eric Acheampong Adu, who sustained gunshot wounds during the operation, has passed on. Our investigation further established that this criminal syndicate, led by the deceased suspect, specialised in the snatching of pickup and Land Cruiser vehicle”.

The four other culprits; Akwasi Manu, Bashiru Tanko, Kwaju Amponsah and Emmanuel Kwame Apea are in police custody assisting with investigations. Akwasi Manu was arrested after the police traced a mobile phone belonging to the deceased in his possession on Wednesday, February 18. Bashiru Tanko, was arrested at Atonsu High School Junction in Kumasi on February 19.

Kwaju Amponsah and Emmanuel Kwame Apea, on February 21 and 22 at Hwireso near Buokrom and the Danyame Soldier Barracks in Kumasi, respectively. On Tuesday February 10, the gang reportedly attacked the victim, identified as Andrews Amankwa, shot him, and made away with his Toyota Hilux vehicle. Andrews Amankwa was receiving treatment at the hospital was later pronounced dead.

In recent years, the Ghana Police Service has made significant progress in tackling robberies and prosecuting offenders. The Service assured the public of its commitment to ensuring security, law, and order across the country.

On February 2, five persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a robbery attack that occurred on December 2 last year at Nkaseim in the Ahafo Region.

The armed suspects invaded the Goaso–Tepa road and simultaneously attacked the Nkaseim Police Station, the Adwumapa Cocoa Buying Company, the Kobby Gold Buying Company, and the Asutifi Rural Bank area in Nkaseim, stealing their belongings. Stolen belongings of the victims include two AK47 rifles, unspecified amounts of cash, and other valuables.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, February 1, the police disclosed that the armed robbers also shot one victim during the attack, causing injuries.

They include 45-year-old Mahamadu Sagio, 28-year-old Shaibu Issah Jallo, 25-year-old Bukari Sulley, also known as Tailor, a commercial tricycle rider, 35-year-old Mutar Kofi, and 40-year-old Abdul Suleman. Meanwhile, three other suspects, identified as Dauda, Mohammed Ali, and Hoyeefi, are on the run.

On Thursday, January 29, seven individuals were arrested over a highway robbery incident that took place last year on the Tamale–Buipe highway, during which a member of the Council of State was assaulted.

The suspects, identified as Rashida Yussif, Aaron Abaana, Wilson Abasong, Muntaru Iddrisu, Aminu Zibrilla, Innusa Sumaila and Haruna Safianu, were arrested on January 11, 2026, after weeks of sustained investigations.

Addressing the media at the Police Headquarters in Accra, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, disclosed that inquiries into the case are still ongoing.

She recounted that the incident occurred on July 21, 2025, when the victim was travelling on the Tamale–Buipe highway and was attacked by six armed men who fled with several personal items, including mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, laptops and other valuables.

“The arrests form part of intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling highway robbery networks across the country,” COP Donkor said.

She also revealed that a separate police operation led to the arrest of five suspects linked to another robbery incident at Nkasei in the Ahafo Region.

According to her, the suspects — Muta Kofi, Mahamadu Sajoe, alias Salifu, Shaibu Issah, Abdul Suleman and Bukari Sule, alias Taylor — were picked up on different dates following investigations into a robbery that occurred on December 2, 2025.

She explained that the suspects, together with other accomplices, allegedly mounted a blockade on the Goaso–Tepa road while armed and launched attacks on unsuspecting motorists.

COP Donkor added that investigations into both robbery cases are still underway as police efforts continue to recover stolen property and track down additional suspects.

She further appealed to the public to stay alert, place a premium on personal safety when travelling, and refrain from sharing sensitive information with strangers, as police intensify nationwide operations to combat criminal activity.

Last year, the government intensified security efforts along the Walewale-Bolgatanga Highway by deploying military personnel and drones to curb rising attacks on passenger buses.

Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, made this known in Parliament on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, while responding to concerns raised by the Member of Parliament for Walewale regarding escalating robberies and vehicle burnings in the North East Region.

According to Mr. Muntaka Mubarak, although Walewale has seen a steady decline in armed robbery cases—from 30 incidents in 2022 to 18 in 2024—the attacks targeting passenger buses remain a pressing concern.

He linked the recent surge in highway violence to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict, explaining that the unrest was spilling over into surrounding areas and contributing to insecurity along the route.

To address the situation, the government imposed a curfew on Walewale and its environs on February 15, 2025, while also reinforcing security operations in the area.

In addition to the military deployment, extra police officers have been dispatched from Tamale to support the Walewale District Command. The government has also increased logistical support, including the provision of more patrol vehicles.

Furthermore, three police bases have been established in Walewale, Janga, and Gombiliga, each manned by 30 officers to enhance security patrols. To protect traders, police escorts have been introduced for market women traveling to and from Walewale’s markets.

Despite these interventions, Mr. Muntaka Mubarak acknowledged that no arrests were made in connection with this year’s robbery incidents. He noted that tracking suspects had been challenging due to the widespread use of motorbikes in the area but remained optimistic about the impact of the new surveillance measures.

“I will continue engaging the police, and with drone surveillance now in place, I believe we will see improvements. But as of now, I have no information on arrests,” he said.

Authorities remain hopeful that these enhanced security measures will restore safety along the highway and deter further attacks.

The Ghana Police Service announced its readiness to face any criminal network and criminal activities with rigour after the boost that comes with the government handing over forty armoured vehicles.

President Mahama handed over the vehicles yesterday, Thursday, December 4, in a handing-over ceremony held at the Ghana Police Headquarters in Accra, and in response to this, the IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, in an acceptance speech, sent a word of caution to all who seek to disrupt national security and peace that his outfit will relentlessly pursue and apprehend anyone involved in criminal activities.

“Let me use this opportunity to send a strong word of caution to persons who have decided to threaten the security of this country: we are coming for you. You can run all you want and hide wherever you wish, but we will surely get you,” taunting the police service’s achievements so far under his leadership.

“We have made several breakthroughs. In addition to numerous robbery attempts that have been foiled through sustained intelligence operations, we have successfully arrested suspects who operated under the illusion that they could get away with crime.

“These include the suspect behind the rural bank robberies, the robbery of the Radiance Filling Station, the robbery at Enfasatia, attacks on mobile vendors, the Wire and Bullet serial murders, vehicle theft syndicates, and perpetrators behind fake online food-delivery platforms,” he mentioned.

NE/R: Court jails two men 10 years each for tramadol possession

The two out of the four individuals who were arrested after the Ghana Police Service and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) seized 1,195 boxes of tramadol hydrochloride 120mg, popularly called “Red,” at Gbintiri near Nalerigu, have each been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The Nalerigu Circuit Court Presiding Judge, Justice Francis Asobayire, also imposed a fine of 5,000 penalty units each, equivalent to GH¢60,000. Under the charge arrangement, those who fail to pay will serve an additional 10 years in prison.

The convicts, Mumuni Iddrisu and Alhassan Braimah, were charged with unlawful possession of drugs. Reports indicate that the two were found with over 4,500 packs of the restricted substance, concealed in 25 five-litre yellow gallons and 100 boxes of tramadol.

They will serve their sentences at the Gambaga local prison. Meanwhile, investigators found the four other suspects, Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Yakubu, and Moses Ayorik, not guilty.

On Tuesday, September 23, the Ghana Police Service and the Narcotics Control Commission announced the seizure of 1,195 boxes of tramadol hydrochloride 120mg after the arrest of six individuals.

The seizure, according to the authorities, took place at Gbintiri, near Nalerigu in the North East Region, on Thursday, September 18. This information was contained in a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Robert Anabiik Anmain of the Public Affairs Unit and issued by the North East Regional Police Command on September 21.

The trucks with registration numbers GR 1712-16 and AW 4417-14 were loaded with tramadol en route to Gbintiri from Sankase in the Republic of Togo. “The North East Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) in Nalerigu, has intercepted 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg, popularly known as ‘Red,’ a restricted drug concealed in a truck, and arrested six suspects at Gbintiri near Nalerigu in the North East Region.

“A search of the trucks uncovered the 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg, popularly known as ‘Red,’ concealed among other goods in the truck with registration number GR 1712-16. The exhibits have since been secured for evidential purposes. During interrogation, the suspects admitted that the consignment was destined for Moses Ayorik at Gbintiri for onward delivery to another individual at Gushegu,” part of the statement read.

According to the statement, the apprehended individuals were in police custody, assisting investigations. The authorities revealed that efforts were underway to trace and arrest other individuals connected to the case.

Meanwhile, officials of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) at the Transit Terminal on Thursday, June 19, intercepted a shipment disguised as general merchandise and headed for Niger.

The officials uncovered 100 cartons of tramadol (50 of 250mg, 50 of 120mg), also known on the streets as “red.” The operation, led by CRO William Kpodo and the monitoring team, has now been escalated to the Tema Collection’s investigation unit in collaboration with the Narcotics Board, Port Security, and JPCU.
In March, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division intercepted contraband goods at Tema Port.

Boxes containing opioids were confiscated before noon. There were 26 cartons of Rahol Tapentadol 250mg, 160 cartons of Tafradol Tapentadol 120mg, 40 cartons of Timaking Tapentadol 120mg, 4 cartons of Timaking Tapentadol 250mg, 190 cartons of Diazole Loperamide 2mg, and 320 cartons of Chlorpheniramine Maleate.

The drugs are worth approximately GH₵20 million. The shipment was en route to Niger, its final destination.
Engaging the media, Health Minister Mintah Akandoh condemned the use of land borders to smuggle drugs and announced that the impounded consignment would remain in the safe custody of the Authority.

“There are only two designated areas for the import and export of medication—Tema Port and Kotoka International Airport. Drugs are not imported through our land borders,” he said.

He called on stakeholders and security agencies to confiscate any drugs brought in through the land borders. The Health Minister indicated that authorities would swiftly seek a court order for the proper disposal of the consignment. Following the court order, the consignment was destroyed.

Ghana is witnessing a surge in drug consumption and addiction among young people. As such, the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, led by George Opare Addo, has introduced an initiative to address the rising issue of substance abuse among young people through a campaign called “Ghana Against Drugs (GAD) – Red Means Stop,” which aims to combat the problem effectively.

In a recent interview, Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, revealed that a survey conducted on tertiary students discovered that about 28 out of every 100 university or college students abuse codeine and cough syrup.

On Thursday, August 28, he indicated that 12 in every 100 tertiary students are involved in cocaine abuse. The Minister further reported that 11% of the participants admitted to overusing heroin.

“Codeine and cough syrups stand at 28%. And then you will be amazed to know that 12% of our university and tertiary students are abusing cocaine and 11% heroin,” he added.

According to him, more than half of the respondents admitted to consuming marijuana-infused products. In July, Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, declared opioid abuse a national emergency.

During the induction of a new cohort of pharmacists joining the Pharmacy Council of Ghana, the inductees were charged to aid the government’s efforts in combating the opioid crisis, particularly the misuse of tramadol.

Hon. Akandoh reminded the new pharmacists of their motto, “Amicus Humanis Generis” (Friends of the Human Race), urging them to uphold it with compassion, ethics, and excellence.
The ceremony, held under the theme “The Future is Now: Young Pharmacists at the Forefront of Preventing Opioid Misuse in Ghana,” highlighted both the promise and responsibility that lie ahead for the nation’s newest healthcare professionals.

Hon. Akandoh described the event as a “special day” marking the beginning of a crucial professional journey. “You have reached this milestone through dedication, hard work, and perseverance,” he said. The Minister emphasised the critical and evolving role of pharmacists in Ghana’s healthcare landscape, describing them as “frontline healthcare providers, educators, patient advocates, and guardians of public health.”

He noted that pharmacists’ work has a direct impact on health outcomes and the well-being of the public. The Minister highlighted how pharmacists are central to the government’s broader health agenda, including the MahamaCares and Free Primary Health Care initiatives.

These programs, he said, rely on pharmacists to deliver accessible, quality healthcare and manage chronic diseases at the community level.

The Ministry of Health extended its congratulations to all newly inducted pharmacists and commended the Pharmacy Council for its unwavering commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery.
In April, the Ministry of Health destroyed a significant consignment of illicit opioid-containing drugs that had entered Ghana under questionable circumstances.

The consignment, which consisted of 128 boxes of Tafrodol, 92 boxes of Timaking Tapentadol, and 10 boxes of Rahol Tapentadol, totaling 230 boxes, posed serious risks to public health, particularly due to the potential for widespread misuse and addiction among the youth.

The destruction of the drugs took place at Vigour-DW Enterprise, a waste management company based in Ashaiman, and was supervised by key regulatory and legal authorities.

The operation was carried out in strict compliance with a court order. In a rare and symbolic gesture, the Ministry chose to publicly incinerate the drugs, sending a strong message to those involved in the illegal drug trade.

Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, emphasized that this action was only the beginning in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.

“We will not stop here. After the safe disposal of this consignment, we will further investigate the clearing agent and the importer, and hand them over to the Attorney General for prosecution,” he stated firmly.

A BBC Africa Eye investigation uncovered that Aveo Pharmaceuticals, based in Mumbai, has been producing unlicensed, highly addictive opioids that are illegally exported to West Africa.

These drugs, packaged to resemble legitimate medications, contain a dangerous combination of tapentadol, a powerful opioid, and carisoprodol, a muscle relaxant banned in Europe due to its addictive properties.

This combination, which is not licensed for medical use anywhere in the world, can cause severe side effects, including respiratory distress, seizures, and fatal overdoses. Despite these risks, the drugs have gained popularity as cheap, readily available street substances in Ghana, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) has condemned the illegal importation of dangerous opioids and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

The Society urged multiple agencies—including the FDA, the Pharmacy Council, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, the Narcotics Control Authority, and the National Intelligence Bureau—to probe the issue and hold those responsible accountable.

“If any local pharmaceutical company is found to have breached regulatory protocols, appropriate sanctions should be enforced to maintain the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain in Ghana,” PSGH stated in a press release issued on February 24.

Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has revoked the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification of Aveo Pharmaceuticals, an Indian pharmaceutical company, after investigations linked it to the illegal distribution of opioid-based medications in West Africa.

As part of the crackdown, the FDA also directed Samos Pharma, a Ghana-based importer, to terminate all business relations with Aveo Pharmaceuticals and Westfin International. Additionally, the registration of six products from Masters Pharmaceutical Limited, which intended to use Aveo as a contract manufacturer, has been suspended.

Galamsey: Lands Minister reports 1,400 arrests in 8 months

1,400 persons have been arrested from January to August this year in the government’s efforts to crack down illegal mining (galamsey). This information was made known while the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah was engaging the media on Thursday, September 24.

According to him, the achievement was attained through the government’s renewed efforts. He noted that the government has seized 440 excavators and more than 800 changfans.

“We have seized 440 excavators and more than 800 changfans. We have mobilised Blue Water Guards in key regions, and they are making a difference,” Mr. Buah stated.

Earlier this month, the government announced plans to deploy soldiers to permanently guard 44 galamsey hotspots, including waterbodies and areas threatened by galamsey activities.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, September 16, The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, noted “All the 44 areas that are threatened by galamsey, there is going to be a permanent military presence,” he added.

The government’s recent move is a response to mounting calls for the declaration of a state of emergency on galamsey. Illegal mining activities continue to regress the country’s development, as they lead to the loss of lives, destruction of properties and the environment, and water bodies, among others. For years, the country’s efforts to nip the canker in the bud have not yielded the needed results.

Among measures taken to protect water bodies from illegal miners is the deployment of river guards. The river guards are selected from communities most affected by illegal mining, ensuring they have a deep understanding of the local landscape and challenges.

The government has rolled out an official order requiring all machinery used in mining operations to be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) by 1st August.
A statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior on Tuesday, July 15, states that the state will go ahead to confiscate unregistered mining equipment after the deadline.

“The Government, as part of efforts to reform the mining sector in the country, requires that all machinery used in mining activities must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) by 1st August 2025. Equipment that remains unregistered after this deadline will be confiscated by the State,” the Ministry stated on its website.

Mr Mubarak has empowered the Ghana Police Service and DVLA to begin strict enforcement of the new rule from August 2. “The Ghana Police Service and DVLA have been directed to enforce this directive from 2nd August 2025 onward rigorously. The general public, especially those who use mining machinery, is advised to take note and comply with the directive,” he wrote.

The Ministry reiterates its resolve to maintain national peace through effective internal security and law enforcement.
Meanwhile, a similar directive came in months ago, where excavator owners and operators were asked to register their machines with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) within two weeks or risk losing them to the state, as the government intensifies efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, issued the directive in Accra, warning that effective June 1, any excavator not registered with the DVLA will be confiscated.

Speaking at a press briefing, Mr. Kotey announced that the Ghana Police Service and the DVLA’s operational team commenced a nationwide enforcement after the deadline, arresting and impounding excavators being used at mining sites or for commercial purposes without proper documentation.

“This exercise will help identify every excavator that enters the country and trace how it is being used. The goal is to ensure we can monitor and hold people accountable,” Mr. Kotey said.

The directive fell in line with Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683), which mandates the registration of all motor vehicles and trailers, including farm and heavy-duty equipment.
Despite the law, the DVLA found many unregistered excavators operating in mining areas, some of which have been used in illegal activities.

Mr. Kotey emphasized that the DVLA, with its 34 offices nationwide, could register all excavators and farm machinery within two weeks and was ready to strictly enforce the directive.
“Excavators in the hands of illegal miners have worsened the destruction of our environment. This is why we must act,” Mr Kotey said.

To further control the situation, the DVLA, in collaboration with key agencies like the Minerals Commission, National Security, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), commenced tagging all newly imported excavators.

In addition to tagging new imports, the Minerals Commission was tasked with leading a team to tag all excavators already in the country. Legal small-scale mining sites have also been geo-fenced, with their site coordinates integrated into the Ghana Mine Repository and Tracking software for better oversight.

The move is part of the government’s broader efforts to combat illegal mining. Three months ago, Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah announced the rollout of a system to monitor excavator imports and usage, involving port tagging and digital tracking in partnership with several state agencies.

According to the sector minister. The third most valuable item imported into this country is excavators, and it is worth GHC6.2 billion.

In April, a total of 47 individuals were arrested for engaging in illegal mining activities along the Tano River and within the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri forests in the Western Region. This followed a special four-day intelligence-led operation that commenced on April 17, within the Samreboi enclave.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the suspects include 39 Ghanaians and 8 Chinese nationals. The Police indicated that a significant amount of equipment and materials believed to have been used for the mining operations were retrieved.

These include seventeen excavators, one bulldozer, four motorbikes, two Toyota Hilux vehicles, one Rav4 vehicle, four pump-action guns, one single-barreled gun, fifty-four live BB cartridges, and eight pumping machines.

Prosecution began for the arrested suspects. On Tuesday, 41 of them were arraigned, with 29 remanded into Police custody to reappear before the court on April 30, 2025. Twelve others were also remanded to return to court on May 2, 2025.

The remaining seven were put before the court on April 23, 2025. Two coordinated operations conducted on Friday, June 20, at Nikanika and Adeade in the Central Region led to the arrest of 3 suspects and the seizure of several pieces of mining equipment.

The operations were executed by the Ghana Police Service through its Special Anti-Galamsey Task Force. The task force proceeded to a mining site at Nikanika. Although no operators were found at the scene, the team retrieved a single-barrel shotgun loaded with a cartridge and three water-pumping machines.

The task force extended its operation to Adeade, where three suspects—Prosper Quansah, Chrispin Nartey, and Owusu Gambra—were arrested with an excavator on a lowbed trailer.
One SANY excavator, four unregistered Haojin motorbikes, and one lowbed vehicle with registration number GN 2136-24 were seized from the scene.

All exhibits were secured in police custody. Some 12 accused persons standing trial for engaging in illegal mining activities at Tumetu near Princess Town in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region have been remanded into prison custody.

While 10 of the accused persons were arrested at a palm plantation, two were arrested at the Elluabo Chavene Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL) plantation.

This was due to a coordinated police intelligence-led operation within the Ahanta West Municipality. The accused persons are Lord Yankey, Caleb Adu Kwaw, Stephen Agyei, Ebenezer Barnes, Mathew Somagevi, Paa Grant, Bashiru Kaviru, Joseph Borney, Aminu Issah, Kofi Sogah, Albert Normah, and Robert Mensah.

Four water pumping machines, one tricycle with registration number M-20-WR 1045, and two motorbikes were retrieved from the sites, according to the police.

All twelve accused persons admitted to the offence during police interrogations. They were subsequently put before the Takoradi Harbour Area Circuit Court ‘A’, and were remanded into prison custody at Sekondi and reappeared before the court on Tuesday, July 8.

Also, fifteen individuals are in police custody for engaging in illegal mining activities at Manso Adubia. They were arrested following a special intelligence-led operation at Watreso and Preacher Krom.
The suspects include Tahiru Ibrahim (24), Shaibu Idrissu, (23), Boateng Emmanuel (27), Jamon Kwaku Samuel (21), Yaro Patrick (29), Kofi Boakye (21), Gubong Mathew (45), Fatawu Zackari Seidu (26), and Abdul Malik Seidu (22).

The others are Dauda Tahiru (23), Sampson Grace (21), Boolangkpuo Freda (24), Arima Hagar (26), Kwarteng Vasco (30), and Kwame Adutwum (24).

Two excavator control boards, two automatic pump-action guns, two Musler 12 firearms, 59 BB cartridges, three AA cartridges, one water pumping machine, two power generators, one vulcanizing machine, and one Apsonic motorbike were seized from the site.

Nkansah, who is a level 100 student of Accra Technical University, impersonated one Quayson Francis Atta of Ghana College SHS. He therefore received a jail term of six months with a fine of 80 penalty units.

A level 100 student of the University of Ghana, James, has been granted a six-month jail term after an attempt to write the exam in place of his twin brother, Amedeka Justice.

On Monday, August 25, authorities caught an invigilator at the Forces SHTS with a phone loaded with exam questions during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

His phone contained exam questions on Picture Making and Oral English.
On Wednesday, August 20, the West African Examination Council commenced the 2025 WASSCE. A total of 461,640 candidates sat for the Oral English exam.

The practical papers commenced on August 4. The number of students who sat for this year’s exams saw a 0.22 percent increase. In 2024, a total number of 460,611 sat for the WASSCE. This year’s candidates compromise 207,381 males and 254,259 females.

Ahead of the exams, the Ghana Education Service (GES) released funds to cater for the 2025 WASSCE practical examinations for all Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) across the country.

An amount of GH¢15,849,920 was released, according to reports. According to GES, in a statement issued on Saturday, July 27, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, the funds are expected to provide all necessary materials and supplies for their practical exams.

“ The Managaement of the Ghana Education Service (GES) announces that funds have been released to all Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) across the country to cover the fees for the 2025 WASSCE practicals.

“This payment ensures that all practical examinations scheduled for the 2025 WASSCE are fully supported, including the provision of the required materials and other essential resources,” the Service noted.

Additionally, the Service explained that the move is intended to shield guardians as well as parents from extra cost and also create a conducive environment in ensuring that students excel in the upcoming exams.

“With the release of the funds, GES seeks to facilitate a smooth and well-cordinated examination process that enables students to focus on their academic work, while relieving parents and guardians of any such financial burden,” it stated.

The GES cautioned school authorities against diverting the funds from its intended purpose, warning that any misappropriation will attract strict sanctions in accordance with existing financial regulations and disciplinary procedures.

“Regional, district and school authorities are, therefore, strongly urged to ensure the due application of the funds for their intended purpose to guarantee efficiency and accountability. Management will continue to monitor the utilisation processes to ensure compliance and to maintain high standards in the administration of the examination.

“The Ghana Education Service appreciates the cooperation of all stakeholders in advancing quality education and remains dedicated to creating an enabling environment for the success of all students,” part of the release read.

In an unrelated event, the West African Examinations Council has cancelled and withheld the subject results and entire results of some two thousand, two hundred and twenty-eight (2,228) candidates who sat for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The Council made this known after revealing that it had released provisional results of candidates who sat for the BECE for School Candidates, 2025.

Following the completion of investigations into a number of cases of irregularity detected during the conduct of the examination and marking of scripts, the 36th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee for the BECE, 2025, held on Friday August 15, 2025 approved the cancellation of the subject results of 718 candidates and the entire results of 177 candidates.

The committee also withheld the subject results of 1,240 candidates and entire results of 93 candidates. Meanwhile, the subject results of some candidates from 119 schools have been cancelled. In addition, the subject results of some candidates from 87 schools have been withheld for further scrutiny.

The withheld results may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations by September 6, 2025. WAEC has indicated that candidates whose results have been cancelled or withheld should visit their website for details and reasons for withholding or cancelling the results.

Meanwhile, the Council will dispatch the results of school candidates to their respective schools through the Metropolitan/Municipal/District Directors of Education.

The results are also available on the Council’s official website at www.waecgh.org for candidates who so desire to access them online.

A total of 603,328 candidates, comprising 297,250 males and 306,078 females from 20,395 participating schools, entered for the school examination that commenced on June 11.

This includes 72 candidates with visual impairment, 239 with hearing impairment and 161 candidates with other test accommodation needs. The examination was conducted at 2,237 centres across the country. Out of the total number, 2,526 candidates were absent.

Ahead of the exams, Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, entreated the candidates to remain focused and stay away from exam malpractices.

Barely 72 hours after the commencement of the exams, the West African Examination Council announced that 10 individuals had been caught engaging in exam malpractice.

“These 10 culprits have been handed over to law enforcement agencies. Their actions are criminal under WAEC law, and the police will now work to prosecute them in court.”

“There was one supervisor who had a mobile phone. He had taken smart shots of the questions and posted them on social media. In addition, six other invigilators were found with mobile phones containing pictures of the examination questions,” Head of Public Affairs John Kapi told JoyNews.

Two months ago, four persons were handed a 30-day prison sentence by the Kintampo Circuit Court in the Bono East Region for their involvement in examination malpractices during the recent Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Presiding Judge Lily Amoah Kankan issued the ruling on Tuesday, June 17. Two others were fined, while three were remanded into police custody for further investigation.

Diana Tii, a teacher at Krabonso D/A School, was caught distributing photocopied materials to candidates in the exam hall. In addition to her 30-day sentence, she signed a two-year bond to be of good behaviour.

Sylvester, also a teacher, was found to have aided one Diana, a candidate, in sneaking the photocopies into the exam hall. He received the same 30-day sentence.

Paul Busi, a student of Kintampo College of Health, was caught with computing questions on his phone. After pleading guilty with remorse, he was fined 100 penalty units, equivalent to GHS1,200.
Edmond Merrato Boi, a teacher at Just Love International School in Kintampo, was caught solving computing questions at the school’s dining hall.

He pleaded guilty with explanation and was sentenced to 30 days in prison with hard labour. Samuel Waabero, an administrator at the same school, was also caught solving computing questions in the dining hall.

He received the same sentence after pleading guilty with explanation. Three other suspects are to reappear in court on July 2, 2025.

Belinda Yaa Adjeiwaa, a fashion designer from Techiman, was found with photocopied answers to the Computing Paper 2. She has been remanded into police custody.

Haruna Mohammed, a teacher at Kintampo SHS, was caught with a mobile phone containing Social Studies questions during the exam. He is also on remand.

Sadique Abubakar, another teacher, was caught with answers to the Computing Paper 1 Objective Test. He was granted court bail of GHS10,000 with two sureties and is expected back in court on the same date.

Proprietor of The Big Six Educational Complex located at Meduma in the Kwabre East Municipality, Afoakwa Sarpong, was also apprehended over an alleged case of assault by imprisonment. On Monday, June 17, the Educational Director for Kwabre East Municipal, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, accompanied by Ms. Mavis Okyere Anane, Public Relations Officer of the Education Directorate, effected the arrest of Mr. Afoakwa Sarpong.

The arrest stemmed from a disturbing incident that occurred on 16th June during the just-ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Mr. Sarpong is said to have unlawfully prevented two Junior High School (JHS) candidates, whose names have been withheld, from writing the Mathematics paper, citing their failure to pay registration fees.
Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect confined the two candidates in a separate room at the examination centre and released them only after the examination had concluded. He has been handed over to the Mamponteng District Police Command.
The number of candidates that registered for this year’s BECE (SC) is 5.99% higher than the 2024 entry figure.
Overall, 569,236 candidates participated in the 2024 BECE, comprising 282,703 boys and 286,533 girls from 19,505 schools.
Special accommodations were provided for 59 visually impaired candidates, 263 with hearing impairments, and 161 others requiring specific assistance.
The exam took place at 2,123 centres nationwide, though 3,845 candidates were marked as absent.
The BECE for Private Candidates had 1,390 participants, 750 males and 640 females, taking the exam at 15 centres across the country’s regional capitals. Among them, 57 candidates did not show up for the exam.
Some 33 school candidates and 3 private candidates had their results withheld due to investigations into possible irregularities. WAEC also flagged subject results from 149 schools, pending further investigations into reported malpractices.
Following thorough investigations, the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee, at its 35th meeting on October 16, 2024, decided to nullify the subject results for 377 school candidates and 3 private candidates.
Also, two teachers were arrested in Jachie Pramso, Ashanti Region, over alleged examination malpractice, following the earlier arrest of three teachers and two residents in Bekwai.

  • Two arrested as police probe Ablekuma North violence

Two arrested as police probe Ablekuma North violence

The Ghana Police Service has apprehended two individuals for their alleged involvement in the violence that marred the parliamentary elections in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11.

The suspects are a 46-year-old station manager at State Transport Corporation (STC), Musah Muntari, and a 43-year-old businessman, Ali Saeed alias Mboma.

This information was contained in a statement issued by the police’s Regional Public Affairs Unit on Wednesday, July 23.

“Accra Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the ongoing investigation into the violent incidents and assaults recorded during the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run held on Friday, 11th July 2025.

The suspects have been identified as Musah Muntari, a 46-year-old Station Manager at STC and Ali Saeed alias Mborna, a 43-year-old businessman. Both suspects are assisting with investigations,” parts of the statement read.

The public has been urged to assist the police with any necessary information regarding the incident to ensure swift prosecution of those involved.

“The Accra Regional Police assures the public of its commitment to ensuring that all persons responsible for acts of violence, intimidation, or misconduct during the elections are brought to justice. The public is encouraged to continue cooperating with the Police and to share credible information by calling our emergency numbers 18555 or 191.”

Electoral violence in Ghana has since been a recurring challenge for years despite calls for an end and actions taken by successive governments to nip the canker in the bud.

On Friday, July 11, the Electoral Commission (EC) held an election in 19 polling stations of the Ablekuma North to provide its constituents with a representative after the 2024 parliamentary elections.

However, the election, which was intended to be peaceful, turned chaotic a few hours in. At the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station in the Ablekuma North constituency, some individuals engaged in a fisticuff with the police personnel. Also, a JoyNews journalist was slapped by an unknown individual.

Former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and Member of Parliament for Ewutu Senya East Constituency, Hawa Koomson, was also assaulted by a group of men. A journalist with GH One Television, Banahene Agyekum, was also slapped by a police officer.

A police officer captured on video assaulting a journalist during the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run has been formally charged with assault, according to the Accra Regional Police Command.

The officer, who was interdicted shortly after the incident, is now facing criminal charges following a review of video evidence by the police.

In a statement issued by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, the police said they are analyzing multiple videos from the July 11 poll to identify all individuals involved in the violent incidents that marred the election.

“In line with due process, the Police Officer captured in one of the videos assaulting a journalist who was interdicted has been held for criminal charges of assault,” the statement indicated.

It adds that statements have been taken from complainants and witnesses, and victims have been issued Police Medical Report Forms as part of ongoing investigations.

The Command noted that it has gathered vital leads and assured the public that arrests will follow soon.

The police also emphasized their commitment to holding accountable anyone found culpable of violence, intimidation, or electoral misconduct.

They encouraged the public to share credible information via emergency lines 18555 or 191.

Deputy Minister for Government Communications, Shamima Muslim, in reaction to the said incident, commended the police for its swift action to reprimand its officer for such unlawful acts and condemned the recent attacks against civilians and journalists during the Ablekuma North election rerun.

“What we are happy about is the swift action that the Ghana Police itself has taken in interdicting the officer in question. It is completely unwarranted. Government itself takes a very serious stance, especially on security agencies meting out unwarranted attacks to civilians under any circumstances,” she added.

President of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor also condemned the attack on journalists. Due to the chaos that erupted, Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno visited some polling stations in the constituency.

The Minority in Parliament has also condemned the violence that took place during the just-ended Ablekuma North rerun election, accusing members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of instigating violent activities. In a statement signed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the caucus said:

“The most disturbing aspect of today’s violence is not just the brutality itself, but the deliberate endorsement and celebration of these attacks by senior government officials. For example, Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw, National Women’s Organiser of the NDC and CEO of the Minerals Development Fund, provided perhaps the most damaging response with her statement that “violence begets violence” and her suggestion that the brutal attacks were somehow justified.”

“Even more shocking is the Facebook post by Malik Basintale, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC, who apparently celebrated the man who attacked Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson with the disturbing declaration, “From today, I name him the Flying Python.

He shall be in charge of the 5k Airforce!” This grotesque celebration of violence against a former Member of Parliament represents a new low in Ghana’s political discourse,” the statement added.

The Minority has registered its displeasure with the operation of the Ghana Police Service at the polling stations.

“The Ghana Police Service’s response raises serious questions about their preparedness and commitment to protecting our electoral process. Security personnel were overwhelmed by the perpetrators, failing to prevent these attacks on political figures, party agents, and journalists.

More concerning are allegations surrounding Chief Superintendent Lumor Frederick Senanu and his potential role in facilitating these disruptions.”

The caucus stressed the need for increased protection for voters, electoral officers, journalists, and candidates. It also called on the international community, civil society, and media to monitor developments closely.

Meanwhile, the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Muntaka, has vowed to go after individuals who contributed to chaos during the Parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

According to him, justice will be served regardless of the perpetrators’ political affiliation. He pledged while addressing the media on Monday, July 14, as part of the ‘Government Accountability Series’ programme.

“I can assure you that not my party, not any group, will we sit and allow to see the resurgence of vigilantism. I have spoken to the IGP firmly about the happenings in Ablekuma North. Videos have been forwarded to him, and we have instructed him to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to book.

“We’re not going to condone any actions by individuals within or outside our party going around to do the untoward. I can assure the public that we will ensure that under the leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, no such group will be allowed to form,” he assured.

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Ewurabena Aubynn polled 34,090 votes to beat the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akua Afriyie, who secured 33,881 votes.

On July 22, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin swore in Ewurabena Aubynn despite a walkout staged by the Minority in Parliament.

Speaking on the floor of the House, the Speaker reminded the legislator that she would account for her works to her constituents at the end of a four-year term, hence the need for her to improve their lives while in office.

“You are now the hope of the people of the constituency. They are looking up to you to do something to improve their lives. It is a trust, and this, I pray, you don’t abuse. Four years is just a day—you will go back to them, and they will assess you this time based on your performance.

“And so don’t allow any person to change who you are. They voted for you, even though it was on a party ticket, but there are many members in the party in that constituency. They voted for you, so please commit yourself to them,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Interior Minister has urged security personnel who will be deployed to oversee the upcoming by-election in the Akwatia constituency, Eastern Region, following the demise of Ernest Kumi, the constituent’s representative, to remain alert while executing their duties.

The Minister for the Interior advised that they reflect on the recent violence that occurred during the parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency and work proactively to prevent a recurrence.

According to him, the government will work to ensure that such dramatic events do not repeat themselves in future elections.

“This is also a wake-up call for our security agencies to know that probably what happened [in Ablekuma North]…gives our security agencies the opportunity to even plan better towards Akwatia. All I can assure the people of Akwatia is that we will use Ablekuma North as a case study to review how we operate in Akwatia—to make sure that the citizens are free to cast their votes and express their will without fear or favour,” Muntaka added.

In a related development, Attorney General (AG), Dr. Dominic Ayine, has received a detailed report on violent incidents that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 general elections for examination and possible sanctions from President John Dramani Mahama.

The report was made available by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, on the occurrences during the period.

The 2020 and 2024 general elections were marred by shootings and clashes between political party supporters and security forces, leading to multiple fatalities and injuries.

The 2020 and 2024 polls claimed the lives of eight and three, respectively. In response, President Mahama tasked the IGP to follow up on these events for accountability and transparency. Justice is expected to be served on perpetrators whose activities resulted in chaos during this period.

Two more detained in connection with clash between Nsoatreman FC vs Kotoko FC

The Ghana Police Service has taken two more individuals into custody in connection with the violent outbreak during the Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC on February 2, 2025, in Nsoatre, Bono Region.

The new detainees, Isaac Ofosu and Yeboah Augustine, are currently under investigation and are cooperating with law enforcement.

This brings the total number of individuals arrested to five, as authorities continue their efforts to track down all those involved in the violence.

In a statement, the Police Service assured the public that a thorough, intelligence-driven operation is underway to identify and capture the remaining suspects.

The tragic incident, which resulted in one fatality, prompted the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to suspend all Premier League matches while investigations are ongoing.

Authorities have urged the public to provide any relevant information to assist in the ongoing pursuit of justice.

3 arrested in connection with fatal violence at Nsoatre stadium

Three individuals have been detained by the Ghana Police Service following violent disturbances during a football match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC at Nsoatre in the Bono Region.

The clash on February 2 resulted in one fatality.

The suspects—Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Agyemang Duah Owusu, and Kyeremeh Joseph—are currently in custody and assisting authorities with their investigation.

While searching Agyemang Duah Owusu’s home, police found two garments with potential bloodstains and an MP 23 pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, raising alarm over escalating violence at football events.

Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has personally expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family and Asante Kotoko’s management, assuring them of a thorough investigation.

Kofi Adams, the Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, has promised that security measures at stadiums will be enhanced nationwide.

As a result of the violence, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has put all Premier League matches on hold pending further investigation.

Kofi Adams condemned the violent behavior, reiterating that those responsible will face legal consequences, emphasizing that the law applies to all.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has dispatched a special team to support the Bono Regional Police in handling the case.

This violent incident has reignited calls for tighter security at football stadiums to protect players, fans, and officials.

The Police Service is urging the public to remain calm and assist with any information that may aid the investigation.

  • Protest is for everyone, not just those with interests! – Bridget Otoo

Protest is for everyone, not just those with interests! – Bridget Otoo

Ghanaian journalist Bridget Otoo has expressed frustration over what she considers misplaced priorities in determining who should participate in protests.

In a series of sharp remarks, she challenged the notion that only individuals with specific or “genuine” interests are justified in joining public demonstrations, dismissing such ideas as “nonsense.”

“So now we need to do facial recognition of those who are genuine? Those who don’t have interest before joining a protest? How does your brain make room for such nonsense? When the country works does it work for only those with selfish interests?” Otoo asked.

The journalist emphasized that national policies affect everyone, regardless of political affiliations or individual motivations.

When you go and buy petrol, will they ask for your party card? When light and water bills are down does it benefit only those with interest? When prices of goods are down does it benefit those with “selfish interest “? she questioned.

Bridget Otoo pointed to real-life concerns like rising prices and environmental pollution, arguing that these problems affect the entire population, not just select groups.

“Does the polluted river affect only those with selfish interest? When your food is poisoned, is it only those with selfish interest who would be affected?,” she added.

Her critique came on the heels of the Ghana Police Service’s arrest of 42 demonstrators from the Democracy Hub protest on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

The protesters, who had unlawfully assembled, were accused of assaulting police officers, obstructing traffic, damaging property, and disturbing public peace.

In an official statement, the police confirmed that all the suspects, including some of the group’s leaders, are in custody and will face legal action. Law enforcement is also seeking Oliver Vormawor, one of the protest leaders, to bring him to justice.

The police service thanked the public for their cooperation and assured citizens of their commitment to maintaining law, order, and peace across the country.

Kumasi: One arrested after clash between Police, protestors in NDC ‘Enough is Enough’ demo

Tensions flared in Kumasi during the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) ongoing ‘Enough is Enough’ nationwide demonstration, leading to the arrest of a protestor following a violent clash between demonstrators and the police.

The incident occurred after protestors reportedly broke into the Electoral Commission’s office in Kumasi, damaging several doors in the process.

According to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, he was physically assaulted by a police officer amid the chaos. This confrontation is part of wider unrest across parts of the country as the NDC protests intensify.

The Ghana Police Service had earlier issued specific guidelines for the protest, cautioning demonstrators to adhere to the designated routes and timelines provided. In response to the escalating tension, the police have taken strategic positions in key locations nationwide to prevent further disruption, with a particular focus on Accra’s Kwame Nkrumah Circle, where a human barricade has been set up to maintain order.

The Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, reiterated the party’s call for peaceful protests, warning participants that any disruptive behaviour would not be tolerated. His statement was intended to prevent the violence that has erupted in some areas.

The nationwide demonstration, organized by the NDC, aims to pressure the Electoral Commission to conduct a forensic audit of the 2024 voters’ register, a demand the opposition party believes is critical for ensuring a free and fair election.

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, addressing the demonstrators in Accra, emphasized the importance of the audit, stating that it is necessary to address irregularities in the voters’ register to uphold the credibility of the upcoming elections. He also revealed that the NDC is considering recalling Parliament to push for this demand.

As the protests continue, the situation in Kumasi remains tense, with security forces on high alert to prevent further escalations.

The Ghana Police Service has refuted claims made by the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, that senior police officials, including the Accra Regional Police Commander, CID Director-General, and Inspector-General of Police (IGP), stated that the arrest of three individuals with firearms in Ofaakor was directed by higher authorities.

In a statement, the police revealed that they had received a video in which Asiedu Nketia asserted that certain senior officers informed him the arrest was ordered from above.

The police have labeled Asiedu Nketia’s accusations as “false and baseless,” emphasizing that the arrest was a straightforward enforcement of the law with no external influence.

According to the police, the suspects were detained at the Electoral Commission offices in Ofaakor, found in possession of a Pump Action gun and ammunition.

The police also clarified that none of the senior officers mentioned by Asiedu Nketia had made any such statements.

Addressing the media after the release of the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, from police custody, Asiedu Nketia cautioned the police and security agencies to be vigilant ahead of the 2024 elections, insisting that no laws should be used to intimidate citizens.

The attention of the Ghana Police Service has been drawn to a video in which Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia is heard claiming that the Accra Regional Police Commander, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Inspector-General of Police had indicated to him that the arrest of some three persons for possession of firearms at Ofaakor in the Awutu Senya East Constituency was based on an order from above.

We would like to categorically state that the claims are false and without any bases. None of the officers mentioned in the video has at any point in time made any such pronouncement.

We wish to emphasize that all three suspects were arrested when a Pump Action gun with four rounds of ammunition was found in their vehicle at the offices of the Electoral Commission at Ofaakor in the Awutu Senya East constituency of the Central region. They have subsequently been cautioned and granted bail.

I was arrested for driving, clubbing in London – Cheddar

Founder of the New Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako, commonly known as Cheddar, has revealed that he faced arrest for driving and clubbing during his stay in London, attributing the incident to youthful recklessness.

Cheddar revealed this during a live Q&A session on the TikTok platform.

However, he refuted claims of involvement in fraudulent activities in London, dismissing them as baseless attempts to tarnish his reputation.

He characterized these accusations as politically motivated maneuvers aimed at undermining his campaign, lacking any factual foundation.

“I don’t have a criminal record in London. I grew up in London. From 1994 to 2001 was when I moved from London to Ghana. In the times I was in London, there were times I was arrested for driving wrongly, clubbing and these were when I was young. I don’t have a criminal record for being arrested in London. So if someone is saying otherwise let the person prove it”.

“I’m not bothered by the allegations against me because I see them as part of life’s challenges. It’s ironic that they’re attempting to pull me down now that I’ve reached this level. However, I trust in God to handle those individuals. If they have any evidence of criminal activity, they should present it. But let me be clear, I have never been arrested before. In England, people can be arrested for minor offenses, but arrests are based on truth,” he added.

Two fire personnel in police custody for suspected murder

Two members of the Ghana National Fire Service have found themselves in the custody of the Damongo police, facing serious charges of murder.

This grim development stems from the alleged beating of a 27-year-old laborer named Shurazu Nuhu, suspected of stealing a mattress, along with others who are presently on the run, evading arrest.

The brother of the deceased, Zakaria Mudasiru, recounted to Citi News the harrowing details of how his brother met his untimely end.

“It was last week on Saturday evening around this hour when a woman came to this house and asked for him. We informed the woman that he was not around. Later, around 8 in the night, he came in with three guys and was handcuffed, riding on an Okada. Upon checking, my brother had been severely brutalized and assaulted. They claimed that he had stolen their mattress, so we inquired whether they had seen him with the mattress or not. They responded negatively, stating that they were still conducting investigations. They were here to determine if the mattress was present or not. We informed them that the mattress was not in the house, allowing them permission to check his room.”

“After searching and not finding the mattress, we instructed them to hand him over to the police. They reported to us that they had informed the police, who expressed frustration with such cases and advised them to handle it on their own. Early Sunday morning, we discovered that he was missing. We searched for him, and yesterday we found him, in a weakened state. We were in the process of preparing a police report and arranging for him to be taken to the hospital. This morning, we woke up only to discover that we had lost our brother.”

Mr. Mudasiru also emphasized the family’s fervent demand for justice for their deceased brother.

“What we are demanding is justice. No matter who you are or where you are coming from, you shouldn’t be denied of your justice.”

The aggrieved brother directly accused the Fire Service personnel of being culpable for his brother’s tragic demise. The family is seeking not just answers but a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice.

Arrested opposition leader in Tanzania Lissu released

One of Tanzania’s prominent opposition leaders and former presidential candidate, Tundu Lissu, has been granted bail shortly after his arrest by police for allegedly participating in an unauthorized gathering.

Lissu, who serves as the vice chairman of Tanzania’s largest opposition party, CHADEMA, was apprehended, along with other party leaders, at a hotel in the northern region of Arusha on Sunday. He was later released the same evening, as reported by Lissu’s party on the social media platform X.

Since his return from exile in January, Lissu has been conducting political rallies across the country, criticizing President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration for its human rights record and its handling of a contentious ports management agreement.

His return from exile followed Hassan’s decision to lift a six-year ban on political rallies. Lissu had been residing in Belgium since his departure in 2020 after losing the presidential election to John Magufuli.

In June 2016, Magufuli imposed restrictions on elected officials holding rallies outside their constituencies, arguing that the election season had concluded and that rallies were an impediment to development. This evolved into a blanket ban on political gatherings, with the police rejecting opposition requests to organize rallies. In some instances, even internal party meetings were disrupted, with leaders and their followers facing harassment and arrests.

Magufuli himself continued to hold rallies and toured the country extensively by road, making numerous impromptu stops to engage with locals and make unscripted decisions.

Hassan, his successor, has taken steps to reconcile with the opposition, including lifting the ban. However, she has also been criticized for continuing some of her predecessor’s authoritarian policies, including the seven-month imprisonment of Chadema leader Freeman Mbowe on charges of “terrorism financing.”

On Sunday, the police stated that Lissu and three other individuals were detained for questioning regarding allegations of participating in an unlawful assembly and obstructing the police from performing their duties.

In a brief video shared on X, Lissu and other party members were seen making a V-for-victory hand gesture, a common symbol used by CHADEMA.

Police grabs man who allegedly killed niece for money rituals

A 37-year-old artisanal miner, Nana Ackah, has been apprehended by the Western Regional Police Command on suspicion of killing his six-year-old niece in an alleged unsuccessful ritual involving money.

The individual in question is thought to have sought out a practitioner of rituals to help him rapidly amass wealth or perform supernatural acts to improve his financial situation instantly.

He was informed that in order for the procedure to advance, he would need to employ his niece as a sacrificial offering.

Nana Ackah immediately rushed home, picked up his niece, Sandra Manu, and informed her parents and other relatives that he was taking her out on a treat.

The two set out on their trek, and along the way, another relative approached them and asked where he (Ackah) was taking her.

He was offended and asked if he didn’t have the right to take his niece out.

The stated relative then warned them not to stay too long where they were.

Sandra Manu questioned the uncle about where he was taking her while they were on their way, but he refused to say.

The girl then began crying, but the uncle consoled her with toffee and requested that she stop.

A few moments later, the uncle allegedly severed the minor’s head with a machete, removed her genitals and other parts of her body, and took them to the ritualist.

Nana Ackah informed the ritualist that he had brought some pieces of the niece, as was required.

But the ritualist told him that he did not ask him to kill the girl and send her pieces since she was needed alive for the money rituals.

Nana Ackah then left the shrine and returned to the bush, where he allegedly murdered the girl and buried her remains.

According to Agya Ben’s story on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Ackah went home and told them Sandra had gone missing.

He claimed to have requested that she wait for him at a specific location while he went to hear nature’s call.

But met her absence after returning to the location where he had asked her to wait.

The police were notified, and a three-day search for the girl was launched, even though Nana Ackah had reportedly murdered her.

On the third day, he confessed to the crime and brought police, family members, and journalists to the site where Sandra was buried.

The Police dug up the site and, to their astonishment, discovered Sandra’s headless body and the other pieces he had removed and planned to use for the money rituals.

He then led the police to the ritualist, who has also been arrested but has denied any wrongdoing, claiming that he did not request that Nana Ackah kill Sandra but rather deliver her life to the shrine.

Fredyma laments ‘arrest’ of Black Sherif at KIA

Well-known music producer, Fred Kyei Mensah, popularly known as Fredyma, has expressed his displeasure over the alleged arrest of Mohammed Ismail Sherif Kwaku Frimpong, also known as Black Sherif, at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

According to reports, Cruise People Limited (Your Cruise People) filed a fraud charge against him, which led to the reported arrest.

In his moving Facebook post from July 21, Fredyma discussed the difficulties facing the music business and how such situations affect artists’ reputations.

He stated, “It’s humiliating being accosted while going to board a flight. A lot of spin and lies were said about his arrest at the onset. It’s a dent in the hard-earned image of his minimal success, and his management should, as a matter of urgency, sort things out with those that engaged him for that event.

“It’s too early for him to be having such bad publicity about his unreliability when one engages him. In our Akan culture, it is said ‘fromfrom nte ho daa,’ loosely translated ‘you cannot enjoy grace all the time’.”

Having worked in the creative field for 38 years, mostly in the music industry, Fredyma considered the challenges that artists confront and lamented the fact that some artists have lost out on possibilities due to their lack of discipline.

“Several musicians have lost great opportunities in the creative space for lack of discipline, naivety, and not paying attention to detail.

“Having dealt with a lot of talents, some peculiar traits that emanate from their actions are non-strict adherence to contractual agreements, inadequate preparation for major performances, lack of routine training and upgrade of their crafts, deception, money conscious, and not capturing detailed daily events,” he lamented.

He also warned Black Sherif about the delicate nature of life and advised, “Black Sheriff, don’t blacken your chef’s dress while consuming his delicacy for life is delicate! Good beads don’t rattle (sic).”

On the evening of July 19, 2023, the well-known Ghanaian musician, Mohammed Ismail Sherif, popularly known as Black Sherif, encountered an incident at Kotoka International Airport (KIA). Though reports about the occurrence emerged on social media, comprehensive details only surfaced in the early hours of July 20.

According to a report by Kofi TV, Black Sherif was stopped upon his arrival in the country because his name had been placed on a ‘STOP LIST.’ The authorities detained him and subsequently took him to the police headquarters in Accra.

The reason for his detention was revealed to be a contractual breach related to a scheduled show in Greece on August 19. Black Sherif allegedly failed to fulfill the terms of the contract, which required him to perform on a cruise ship in Greece. The contract involved a payment of US$40,000, with the artist receiving half of the amount upfront. The balance was supposed to be paid after the show.

Initially, no photos or videos of the incident were available. However, blogger Nkonkonsa later shared footage on Twitter, which showed Black Sherif being escorted into a car by a police officer and another individual in casual clothing.

In the midst of the unfolding situation, it has been gathered that Black Sherif was not arrested but rather escorted to the police car. The circumstances surrounding the contractual dispute are being closely monitored by the public and the media.

On the evening of July 19, 2023, musician Black Sherif was taken into custody at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

He was transferred from the airport to the police headquarters in Accra, according to a Kofi TV report, because of a contract violation regarding a July 4 show that he failed to honor in Greece.

Kofi Adomah, host of the Kofi TV channel on YouTube, further disclosed that the reason the musician was detained at the airport was because he had been added to the stop list following a client complaint that led to his inclusion on the list.

“We called our sources and it appears it is due to a contractual issue he has to play on a cruise ship in Greece having charged US$40,000 and receiving half of the amount.

After the performance, he was supposed to get the remaining amount, Kofi said.

Blacko ignored the July 4 show date and did not perform.

Prophetess and evangelist jailed 11 years for stealing GHC265k from ill 72-year-old lecturer

An Evangelist and Prophetess have been handed an 11-year prison sentence for their involvement in the theft of GHC265,000 from the bank account of a 72-year-old retired lecturer.

The sentencing has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the betrayal of trust and the consequences of financial exploitation against vulnerable individuals.

As reported by DailyGuide on July 6, 2023, two individuals identified as Samuel Kwesi Tsogbe, a 33-year-old evangelist, and Esther Christ, a 63-year-old prophetess, both self-ordained pastors of Cornerstone Ministry International, have been accused of embezzling funds from the bank account of a sick and bedridden 72-year-old lecturer.

The pair allegedly siphoned a substantial amount of money from the lecturer’s account, causing widespread outrage and raising concerns about financial exploitation.

After stealing the money, Tsogbe and Christ opened an account with another bank and channeled the stolen funds into the said account.

The two were charged with stealing.

The court presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Balokah, convicted the accused persons on their own pleas as they both pleaded guilty to the offence.

According to the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, who presented the fact brief to the court, indicated that, the persons travelled from Kpando to Accra to offer prayers for the bedridden lecturer.

It was during their stay at the lecturer’s house that they committed the crime.

After which they sent away the lecturer’s house help, whom they claimed was the cause of the victim’s predicament.

The prosecutor named Margaret Dzandu, a teacher and the victim’s niece who lives in Kpando in the Volta Region, as the complainant, while the victim is a retiree who lives in Danfa in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the persecuting officer, the accused persuaded the complainant in 2022 that they had a revelation about her uncle’s situation and convinced her to send them to his residence to pray for the victim.

The prosecution said the accused persons occupied the home of the victim for about five months.

While there, they sacked the housekeeper and engaged a new house help from Kpando.

On May 4, 2022, Evangelist Tsogbe and Prophetess Esther took the victim to NIB bank, to withdraw GH200,000 from his account. They also stole the victim’s ATM card and cheque book from the National Investment Bank (NIB) after he did the withdrawal.

The prosecution stated that on September 22, 2022, they began transferring funds from the victim’s NIB account to Tsogbe’s account until June 2, 2023.

Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo added that the complainant visited the victim who needed money in June 2023. During a search of the house, the victim’s ATM card and cheque book were not found.

It said the complainant’s preliminary investigations showed that the accused persons had stolen her uncle’s ATM card and cheque book.

It added that the complainant reported the matter to the police at Kpando and an extract was given to her to send to the police at Ayi Mensah.

When the accused were arrested by police, they admitted to stealing the victims’ ATM card and cheque book, which were recovered.

According to police investigations, the accused purchased a tipper truck, a Hyundai Mighty 2 vehicle, and rented a shop in the Oti Region.

The Evangelist Samuel Kwesi Tsogbe pleaded with the court to forgive him as he did not know his action would turn out this way.

“I apologise for this; have learnt my lesson,” he said.

Esther Christ, the Prophetess, also told the court that she was a foreigner who came to Ghana through another prophet.
“I sincerely apologize,” Esther told the court.

The judge, Sedinam Awo Balokah, described the accused persons conduct as “unpalatable”.

The report added that the court was not impressed at all with the way people were using spirituality to exploit the vulnerable, hence handing down a deterrent sentence.

It ordered the seizure of items purchased and owned by the accused persons.

The court also froze the account of Tsogbe and restrained him or other persons from withdrawing money from the said account.

The two were served with a total jail term of 11 years. Samuel Kwesi Tsogbe, the evangelist was sentenced to six years imprisonment, while Esther Christ was sentenced to five years imprisonment.

  • Minerals Commission CEO reveals how small-scale mining task force arrested 3 Yemenis in Oda

Minerals Commission CEO reveals how small-scale mining task force arrested 3 Yemenis in Oda

The CEO of the Minerals Commission, Martin Ayisi has disclosed that on Monday, May 1, the small-scale mining task force in Oda arrested three Yemenis in the area.

He said that the Commission has involved the police to undertake the necessary procedures to prosecute the perpetrators.

“Just this Monday, the holiday, the small scale task force and the Minerals Commission office in Oda arrested three Yemenis and then impounded two excavators, which are now parked at the police station.”

However, Mr Ayisi further indicated that upon the arrest, the Chief of the area visited the office of the task force and claimed ownership of the mining site that was being used by the Yemenis.

He told the host of Newsfile, Samson Lardey Anyenini, “Then a chief showed up, says, ‘ɛha yɛ medeɛ —this is my site.’

“So quickly, the police arrested them. The locals who were working fled. They’ve been arrested. We got the authorities involved. I think they’ve been granted a police inquiry bill.”

Mr Ayisi then emphasised that the fight against galamsey seemed unprogressive because influential people in society were involved in the operation, explaining that if persons such as the chief are not prosecuted and subjected to the full rigours of the law, they will be viewed by citizens as having impunity.

This perception, he pointed out, would make citizens also believe that if they engage in galamsey, they can get away with their crime.

Although he asserted that the penalties and the sanction regimes were punitive, he emphasised that they should be biting to be effective.

Mr Ayisi suggested that if the perpetrators involved in galamsey— especially the influential people— are arrested, they should be publicised and imprisoned so as to deter other citizens from engaging in the act.

“So, for instance, this chief, if he’s convicted by the court in Oda and is put in jail and is well publicised … then you are sending a strong signal to everybody that, hey, you can go to jail,” he stressed.
