  • Thomas Partey to arrive in Ghana camp late due to imminent Arsenal move

Ghana midfielder, Thomas Partey is set to delay his travel to join the Black Stars ahead of the international friendlies against Mali and Qatar later this week due to his imminent move to Arsenal.

Partey has been a top transfer target for the Gunners throughout the summer transfer window.

Arsenal has previously indicated that his release clause is too high, but have now changed their stance and are willing to meet the clause.

Sources indicate that Arsenal has paid his release clause of 45 million euros and he is expected to undergo a medical in Madrid to complete the move on deadline day.

The deputy captain who is expected to join the Black Stars team in Antalya, Turkey today to begin preparations for the double-header against Mali and Qatar will have to stay in Madrid to have his medical ahead of his move to the English Premier League side.

  • Partey, Torreira swap deal unlikely Reports

Arsenal midfielder, Lucas Torreira, is close to joining Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid, according to reports in his native Uruguay.

Arsenal and Atletico are said to be in advanced stages in their negotiations over the 24 year old.

Arsenal were interested in facilitating a player-plus-cash deal involving Torreira for Atleti midfielder Thomas Partey.

But with Atletico only interested in signing Torreira on loan, that deal looks very unlikely.

Partey has been linked with Arsenal throughout the summer window but the Gunners have not been prepared to pay his £45m release clause.

The Ghana international is still yet to sign a new contract extension with Atletico which will see a significant rise in his release clause.

The position of Atletico on the future of Partey remains unchanged, and Arsenal will have to trigger his release clause if they are to have any chance of signing him.

  • Partey reminds me of Gilberto Silva and Vieira – Ex-Arsenal defender Armand Traore

Former Arsenal defender Armand Traore is urging the club to sign Vieira-like midfielder Thomas Partey in the summer transfer window.

Partey has been linked with a move to the North London club, but initial attmpts by the Gunners has been unsuccessful.

Traore who played with Patrick Vieira and at the latter part of his Arsenal career with Brazilian midfielder Gilberto Silva, believes the Ghanaian will offer the Gunners the amount of protection the two gave the club during their playing days.

Arsenal have struggled to find a replacement for the two since their exits from the club, trying several players and failed.

“They need to keep Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang,” he told talkSPORT.

“I would strengthen the central defence. I wouldn’t mind a guy like Partey, sitting in front of the defence, somebody a bit angry.

“He reminds me a bit of Gilberto Silva or Vieira, somebody who can go out there and have a go.

“I think Arteta’s doing a great job and I can only see them doing well in the future to be honest.”

“I think he should move,” said Gargo. “I think the subject of where he should be is going to even hype him up. It is going to make him a better player than he is now,” he added.

“Who would want to move from class three to class four instead of class four ?,’ he quizzed.

“I mean, he moving to Arsenal is going to giving him an opportunity to take a step further. It’s going to help him up and it will make him a better player for the Black Stars,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, head coach of the Black Stars Charles Kwablan Akonnor has advised against the move to Arsenal, insisting the midfielder has the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League at Atletico Madrid.

The player has been advised to snub a move to Arsenal by former Ghana midfielder Derek Boateng and Current Black Stars Head Coach, C.K. Akonnor; stating that it will be a step down.

In a statement, Ljungberg said he had taken the decision to leave “to progress my management experience”.

Ljungberg, 43, had a spell in interim charge following the departure of Unai Emery in November 2019 and stayed on the coaching staff after the appointment of Mikel Arteta.

He also coached Arsenal’s under-15 and under-23 squads.

  • Thomas Partey is the right man for Arsenal – Kenyan international Okoth

Kenya and Sofapaka striker Ronald Okoth believes Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey is the right player for Arsenal this summer.

The 27-year-old enjoyed his best season in La Liga with Atlético Madrid making 35 appearances and scoring three goals.

The Gunners are still looking for a talismanic figure to fill their engine room and have been heavily linked to the Black Stars talisman who reportedly has a release clause of €50million (£43.5m).

According to Okoth, Partey’s signing will prove a worthy deal for the London side.

“I surely think he [Thomas] Partey is the right man for Arsenal because if you analyse the club now, it really requires an engine like Partey,” Okoth told Goal.

“If at all they [Arsenal and Partey] would come to an agreement, it is going to be the best signing made by Arsenal. Looking at the kind of defensive woes and all that, I think Partey is a man to bring some kind of stability across the board.

“He can help cushion the back four and join the attacks when there is a need to but his greatest strength, as I know, is creating the best link between the defence and the forward line.

“Partey will provide the much-needed cover that Arsenal have been lacking for quite some time.

“It will be the best signing in my view.”

He added, “[Matteo] Guendouzi is young and a hard-working lad, and when he plays one finds it hard to believe he is still very young.”

“If he continues putting the same work rate week in week out in a season, then I have no doubt that he has a bright future.

“He is definitely going to be among the best mid

“I will not call it a challenge [Guendouzi vs Partey possible rivalry] as such, but I would prefer to say that it would be a healthy competition. It will bring the needed fighting spirit among the players and end laxity.

“Whenever you get another quality player joining, that is always a plus because he will push you beyond your limit.

“In that process, one gets to unleash his own best side. It is the same thing we are seeing Chelsea doing; signing strikers when the likes of Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham are still there.”

However, reports in the UK suggest that the Gunners are waiting until the Ghanaian makes a contract decision at Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal, who view their midfield as a priority area to reinforce this summer, are waiting to discover the outcome of these talks before making a move for the 27-year-old.

  • Arsenal could announce the signing of the Barcelona star in a swap deal

Barcelona midfielder Coutinho has been linked with a move back to Premier League. Based on the report reaching us, Arsenal is in negotiation to sign the former Liverpool man.

Matter Guendouzi has fallen out of favour at Arsenal and there are reports on the media that the Gunners are currently negotiating a deal with Barcelona to sign Philippe Coutinho which could see Guendouzi moving the other way.

Former Liverpool midfielder Coutinho has been deemed as a surplus to requirement at Barcelona and has been tipped to make a move back to Premier League this summer.

He has been linked with clubs in England including Newcastle United, Spurs, Chelsea, Leicester City and FA Cup finalist Arsenal.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has dropped Guendouzi from the first team after an incident against Brighton, he’s future with the club is already in doubt. Arsenal and Barcelona are in negotiations over a swap deal involving the two players, according to Foot Mercato.

The report claims that Arsenal technical director Edu has long admired Coutinho and the goes with Barcelona Chiefs over Guendouzi.

The Catalan giants are eager to sell the Brazilian midfielder in swap deal after performing below the expectations since his arrival from Liverpool in January 2018. Coutinho’s contract with Barcelona will expire in 2023. If he stays to see out his deal then it would cost the club a fortune.

Coutinho value is in the region of £60m which will be very difficult for Arsenal to spend due to the financial crisis caused by Coronavirus pandemic. Mike Arteta has been told by the Arsenal board of directors that he can only buy when he sold. A swap deal would be appropriate for both clubs.

A swap deal between Guendouzi and Coutinho will definitely make sense after the Frenchman was left out of Arsenal’s eight games in a role. Arsenal has prioritised the signing of a defender and a holding midfielder this summer.

  • Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta fumes over Eddie Nketiah’s red card against Leicester

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta feels Eddie Nketiah’s red card in the game against Leicester was harsh.

The English born Ghanaian was red-carded just four minutes after being on the pitch following a reckless challenge on James Justin.

Arteta feels Leicester City goalscorer Jamie Vardy should have also been shown the marching orders after an early nasty challenge on Shkodran Mustafi.

“I am extremely proud of the team – the way we played, against this type of opposition, and how dominant we were,” Arsenal boss Arteta told Sky Sports.

“In the first half we should have gone three- or four-nil up and killed the game.

“With the red card decision, he doesn’t see the player and you have to know that he is a young kid.

“But if that is a red card then Leicester have to play with 10 men after 42 minutes. That has to be a red card as well.”

  • Arsenal boss Arteta lauds Nketiahs maturity after Southampton win

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has heaped praises on Eddie Nketiah for his strong mentality after scoring against Southampton in the Premier League on Thursday.

Nketia netted for the Gunners in their 2-0 win at the Saint Mary’s stadium to bring an end to their two-game losing streak.

The victory moved them up to ninth in the table with 43 points after 31 matches played this far.

“Eddie, since I joined, the maturity and the personality that he plays every game with is incredible,” Arteta said during the post-match as reported by the Arsenal website.

“I demand a lot of our forward players to put the opponent under pressure and they’ve done it. A lot of the goals we score are because of the errors that we force on the opponent.

“In that heat, to keep chasing players and putting them under pressure, sometimes it’s not a really nice thing to do.

“But obviously when you get a goal from the mistakes they’ve made – which could have caused a few more goals – it’s really important. It generates belief in what they do and it pays the price for the effort.

“I am happy with Eddie, the way he’s played again today, but I’m happy in general with the team. I’m really happy with the subs, the way they came in and helped the team together with the result and the attitude that they showed.”

Nketia has now scored six goals this season – with four of them coming for the London based side, and two coming for Leeds United.

  • Michael Jordan’s Last Dance reminds of Thierry Henry – Ex-Arsenal star

Like virtually every sports fan across America and the world, Carlos Vela developed a Sunday routine over the last five weeks.

For the first time since Game of Thrones went off the air in summer 2019, the U.S. was united by a true television phenomenon: The Last Dance. The documentary, a 10-part event broadcast over five weeks, followed Michael Jordan’s rise to his place as the most revered basketball player of all time while focusing on his final season with the Chicago Bulls in 1997-98.

With American sports suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Last Dance became a phenomenon. The series of episodes offered deep dives into one of the greatest athletes and one of the greatest teams of all time, filling everyone’s Sunday with larger-than-life stories about Jordan and his six NBA titles.

Vela, a massive basketball fan, was instantly hooked.

“Of course. Every Sunday I was there,” Vela told Goal. “My wife wasn’t happy. But I said, ‘these two hours, these are for me’.”

The Los Angeles FC star has long been a fan of the NBA. In the past, Vela has stated that he actually prefers basketball to soccer and, in his free time, he chooses to spend his moments away from his own sport by following the NBA.

Vela recently uploaded a video of him, in full Los Angeles Lakers gear, dunking on his own hoop while the Mexican international also expressed excitement at starring alongside James Harden in a new ad for sports drink BODYARMOR.

Over the last five weeks, Vela, like the rest of the country, was offered an insight into Jordan’s mindset as a leader, for better or worse. The series detailed the famous grudges and perceived slights that fueled his career. It discussed Jordan’s gambling, or as he calls it “competition”, problems.

Most poignantly, the series revealed Jordan’s leadership style, which often pushed teammates to their limit physically and mentally. At the end of the seventh episode, an emotional Jordan reflected on criticisms of how far he pushed those that played alongside him before tearfully calling for a break in the interview.

“When people see this they are going say, ‘Well he wasn’t really a nice guy. He may have been a tyrant.’ Well, that’s you. Because you never won anything,” Jordan said.

“I wanted to win, but I wanted them to win to be a part of that as well. Look, I don’t have to do this. I am only doing it because it is who I am. That’s how I played the game. That was my mentality. If you don’t want to play that way, don’t play that way.”

Throughout his career, Vela has played with a number of big players. And, having watched Jordan’s leadership style and his ability to push teammates further than they thought they could be pushed, the Mexican star says he was reminded of former Arsenal star Thierry Henry.

Henry and Vela never took the field together at Arsenal, as Vela was loaned out throughout his early years with the club due to a work permit issue. But the Mexican star says Henry’s leadership still stood out, giving him a Jordan-like presence.

“Thierry Henry was a really hard guy,” he said. “He tried every day to be the best and he pushed the young guys to work more, to be professional, to try to bring everything to every training.

“He would say, ‘if you train hard, you can play hard’. Thierry Henry was an inspiration to me and you can see the career he had. I’m proud to have said I can play with him. He’s a good leader.”

Vela’s personality, meanwhile, is a bit more laid back, but he’s still found plenty of success since making the move to MLS ahead of LAFC’s expansion season.

The winger smashed MLS records last season by scoring 34 goals in 31 matches, helping guide LAFC to a Supporters’ Shield and an MLS record for points in a season.

But, as he looks to add an MLS Cup to his resume, Vela says he learned a lot from watching Jordan’s rise to NBA immortality.

“I wasn’t surprised. You are not there to see it day by day, but when you see what Michael Jordan did, you feel something special, something different than the rest,” he said.

“I feel like I have a lot of things to learn from Michael Jordan to try and be the best. I take it as motivation. Maybe I have to be more hard, do more things to help my teammates to be better so we can win more championships.”

  • I am an Arsenal man – Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas starred at both Arsenal and Chelsea over the course of his glittering career, but he admits that his spell at Highbury and the Emirates Stadium will always stand out as special.

Fabregas moved to north London from Barcelona’s La Masia academy in 2003 at just 16, and became Arsenal’s youngest-ever first-team player months later by making his debut in the League Cup against Rotherham.

He went on to spend eight seasons under Arsene Wenger at the club, making more than 300 appearances and lifting the FA Cup in 2004-05.

A move back to Barcelona and later Chelsea followed, with both spells yielding the league trophy he was unable to obtain with the Gunners, but when told by fellow Arsenal favourite Thierry Henry that red was his colour, Cesc was in full agreement.

“When I think about you, you are in a red shirt,” Henry told his former team-mate in an Instagram chat. “I know people will say you won the league and became a legend at Chelsea, but you are an Arsenal man.”

Fabregas replied: “I am and it will be part of me for the rest of my life. I would never have thought I would have mixed feelings between these two teams, but you go there and you meet people, you win titles, become important and win titles. You end up having so much love for the club.

“You are right. You don’t forget where you come from and I came from Barcelona academy and I will never forget that, but to make it on the biggest level was at Arsenal and I don’t forget that.

“I was so lucky to come in at that moment, to see you, Ashley (Cole), Robert (Pires), Patrick (Vieira), Sol (Campbell).

“The management at the club gave me so much leadership and everything I needed to be a top player. I will never deny that I will always be an Arsenal man in my heart.

“Football has so many turnarounds but I will never forget the connection with the fans and I had so much love at Arsenal and Chelsea. No can ever hear me say anything bad about Arsenal, even when I went to Chelsea and won there, and then won the league.”

Fabregas, 33, is currently starring in Ligue 1 with Monaco, after leaving Chelsea for the principality in January 2019.

“Football has so many turnarounds but I will never forget the connection with the fans and I had so much love at Arsenal and Chelsea. No can ever hear me say anything bad about Arsenal, even when I went to Chelsea and won there, and then won the league.”

  • Don’t fuck up my Sunday!’ – Evra reveals Sir Alex Ferguson’s pre-Arsenal team talk

Former Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra has revealed how legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson once prepared the team to face Arsenal by telling the players: “don’t f*ck up my Sunday” in his pre-match team talk.

Ferguson is widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest managers in football history, winning a record 13 Premier League titles during his time with the Red Devils, while also securing two Champions League trophies along the way.

Having collected so many honours, one might wonder how Ferguson continued to get the best out of his teams in the lead-up to important matches, but Evra revealed that the Old Trafford icon was sometimes a man of few words.

“I remember a game,” the former left-back told Sky Sports. “It was sometime we were playing against Arsenal. It was Sunday, it was sunny, and the speech of Ferguson was like 15 seconds.

“He was like: ‘Guys, it’s Sunday, it’s really sunny outside. I don’t want no one to f*ck up my Sunday’.

“And you know if you missed a cross or something… You don’t want to be the person to do that! Don’t ruin his Sunday it’s very important for him!”

In 2009, Evra famously made headlines after referring to Arsenal as “babies” following a routine win over the north London side at the Emirates Stadium.

Recalling that era, the Frenchman added that he told Robin van Persie not to worry when coming up against his former side, stating that the Gunners were his “kids”.

“I remember when Van Persie came,” Evra added. “He said: ‘Come on Patrice, come on, you have to motivate everyone, it’s an important game’.

“I was like, ‘Robin, don’t worry, those are my kids, we’re going to win easy’ and we won!”

Adding on the famous “babies” quote, he said: “I made that comment when we won 3-1 at the Emirates.

“We scored that great goal in counter-attack with Ji-sung Park, [Wayne] Rooney and [Cristiano] Ronaldo, and the French journalists after the game were really like: ‘Oh, the result doesn’t reflect the philosophy of the game’.

“I was like: ‘Are you serious? I just feel like today was 11 men and against 11 babies’. After that it was in the paper. ‘Patrice is calling Arsenal babies!’

“But it’s just the feeling… I respect so much this club, but it was just my feeling when I played against them I know I’m going to win.

“I’ll be honest with you, I played against this player, and after 34 minutes they were asking: ‘Patrice, can we swap shirts at half-time?’ So I was like: ‘I’ve already won the game’.”

  • Thomas Partey keen on Arsenal move

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey wants a move to Arsenal and is hopeful that an agreement will be reached with his club, footballghana.com can exclusively report.

The 26 year old has told his friends that he believes he is ready to prove himself in the Premier League and Arsenal is the right club for him.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta identified the Black Stars man as the key to improving his midfield ahead of next season and is desperate to sign him.

Footballghana.com understands that Arsenal are willing to part ways with Alexandre Lacazette in order to land the former Mallorca loanee. They want to do a swap deal and Atletico Madrid like the idea due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The La Liga club are also admirers of Lacazette and that could make a potential deal easy.

Partey has been key for Diego Simeone this season, playing 38 matches in all competitions.

  • UK media claims Thomas Partey is open to Arsenal move

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey has decided he wants to join Arsenal at the end of the protracted season, according to The Telegraph.

Partey is hoping a deal can be struck between the two clubs.

The Ghana international, 26, has told those close to him he has ambitions of proving himself in the Premier League with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Partey has a release clause of around £45million and Atletico are braced for approaches but also have an interest in Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.

The report claims Arsenal could consider a swap deal, offering Alexandre Lacazette to Atletico with Partey arriving at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal are in talks with Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Teye Partey and the Gunners are said to be weighing up whether to trigger the £44m release clause in his contract.

The defensive midfielder has made 35 appearances for Atletico across all competitions this season and was widely praised for his performances in the elimination of UEFA Champions League holders Liverpool.

Last week, Partey’s father confirmed that his son was holding transfer talks with Arsenal.

  • Thomas Partey’s agent clash with father over Arsenal links

Thomas Partey’s agent has dismissed talks that Arsenal have held negotiations with the Atletico Madrid midfielder.

The 26-year-old has been strongly been linked to the Premier League side this summer.

However, Partey’s father in an interview with the Ghanaian media confirmed that Arsenal have held talks with his son and would sanction the deal.

The Ghana international who has a deal that runs until 2023 and a release clause of 50 million euros, has been in talks with Atletico this season about extending his contract, although thus far there has been no agreement.

However, what has been made clear is that the 26-year-old is not currently discussing in negotiations about switching Atletico for Arsenal.

“It’s totally untrue,” JJSports, Thomas’ representatives, said of the reported Arsenal negotiations.

  • I will be happy if Thomas joins Arsenal- Jabob Partey

Thomas Partey’s father, Jacob Partey, has confirmed that Arsenal has been in contact with his son’s agent and added that he hopes the Ghanaian midfielder joins the Gunners when all is said and done.

The 26 year old has been a subject of many transfer speculations with Arsenal said to be the main club interested in signing him.

Mikel Arteta believes Partey will be a major boost to his midfield setup.

In an interview with Tru FM, Jacob expressed how much he would want his son to join the Premier League club.

“I called my son after hearing the rumours and he told me that the rumours are true. He told me they are holding talks between him and Arsenal. It all depends on the offer Atletico are demanding.”

“If he goes to Arsenal fine, they have a lot of supporters in Ghana. I will be happy if he decides to move to Arsenal. What they are discussing now is how Atletico will release him.”

  • Atletico Madrid to double Thomas Parteys wages to fend off Arsenals interest

Atletico Madrid are bent on keeping their priceless midfielder in Thomas Teye Partey and have decided to double his wages to £130,000 a week in order to ward off interest from Arsenal.

Arsenal are in pursuit for Thomas Partey, having reportedly tabled down £43.6 million bid, which is the release clause for the signature of the Ghanaian midfielder from Atletico Madrid.

Thomas Partey has been very keen in the scheme of things of Diego Simeone this season and he has established his place in the watertight Atletico Madrid midfield.

Atletico Madrid in their quest to maintain the stability in the team have reportedly decided to double Partey’s wages which will see him receive £130,000 a week.

The proposed new deal would see Partey’s release clause increased to £87.2m.

Partey, a defensive midfielder, has been capped by Ghana on 27 occasions, and, at the age of 26, is approaching what should be the best years of his career.

Arsenal can already call upon Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi at the base of the midfield, but Partey, it would appear, represents a superior option.

Partey joined Atletico as a youngster in 2012 and featured for their B side before gaining experience on loan at Mallorca and Almeria.

He has now made 174 appearances for Atletico and won the Europa League in 2018.

  • Arsenal reportedly offers €50m to sign Thomas Partey

Arsenal have reportedly made an offer for Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Teye Partey of €50m, with negotiations underway between the two clubs.

The 26-year-old has emerged as one of the best central-midfielders in Europe and the Gunners are hoping to bring him to the Premier League.

According to the report, Thomas Partey has agreed to personal terms with the London based club with negotiations underway.

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta sees Partey as the ideal man to protect his back four as he plots to add some steel to his squad.

Partey currently has a £45million release clause in his contract with his deal expiring in 2023 but Atletico have reportedly offered him a new deal on around £79k-a-week until 2025 to ward off Premier League suitors.

Partey’s stellar performance against Liverpool in the Champions League Round of 16 has seen him on the radar of most European clubs.

  • Coronavirus: Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta opens up on illness

    v

Arteta tested positive for the virus on March 12, with his diagnosis hastening a suspension on top-level English football, which will remain in pace until at least April 30 due to the ongoing pandemic.

The 37-year-old Spaniard positive test was confirmed shortly after that of Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis, who came into contact with Arsenal players after the sides played in the Europa League two weeks earlier.

“I am feeling completely recovered,” Arteta told Arsenal’s official website.

“It’s true I started having some symptoms when we got the phone call from the club to let us know that we might be exposed to the virus because of the owner of Olympiacos and in that moment… I don’t know, I felt something within me, that I had it.

“We had a game the following day against Manchester City, so I made a decision and called the doctor straight away and I asked him to drive home.

“I said, ‘Listen, we have a couple of players that have been exposed. There is a massive risk there and as well I am the first one feeling the symptoms, very clear symptoms. So if that is the case, all of the players and the people related to the club who are in contact with me on a daily basis are exposed. So we cannot make that decision, we have to speak to the Premier League, to Manchester City and we have to make the decision pretty quickly.’”

Having gone through what he describes as a difficult few days, suffering symptoms including a temperature, dry cough and chest discomfort, Arteta admitted catching the illness brought about “fear” of having spread it.

With Arsenal’s return to training delayed amid the government’s instruction for the public to stay at home where possible, Arteta has urged fans to follow the club’s example.

“Please to everybody, we are a little bit behind other countries, for example Spain, where I know the situation they are living at the moment, and while we are having the opportunity a little bit to minimise the risk, I encourage everybody please to be responsible and stay at home as much as possible,” Arteta said.

“That is all we can do from our position, we don’t have the ability to help others in other circumstances, so please at least stay at home and do what is required.

“We have to try to help the NHS as much as possible and we have to give the opportunity to the elderly people who needs this more than anybody else to get the treatment they require. We have to slow the process down and the virus down, so please stay at home.”

Before the Premier League was suspended, Arteta had overseen an eight-match unbeaten run that had lifted his side to within eight points of fourth-placed Chelsea, with a game in hand on their London rivals.

While it remains unclear in what format or stage the Premier League will resume, Arteta explained the steps he’s taking to ensure his side are ready when that moment arrives.

“We’re just trying to cover all the necessities that players, staff and employees need to try to sustain the club with healthy people,” said Arteta, who took over from Unai Emery in December.

“They all have programmes and they all have individual work to do that they are really doing and really trying to maintain themselves so they can prepare themselves for when we have to get back playing.

“There is the psychological support that they need, which we are giving them, and as well I’m giving them a lot of homework to do because I’ve been reviewing everything that we’ve been doing since I joined.”

  • Lack of Champions League will affect signings – Arteta

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta admits it is a “no-brainer” the club will struggle to attract top players if they fail to qualify for the Champions League for a fourth successive season.

The Gunners face the possibility of no European football at all next year and the financial ramifications that would entail.

A shock defeat to Olympiakos in the Europa League last 32 has closed off one route to a Champions League return, while they sit 10th in the Premier League.

Manchester City’s appearance in the Carabao Cup final meant Arsenal did not have a league game this weekend but instead head to Portsmouth on Monday night for an FA Cup fifth-round clash.

Winning a record 14th FA Cup could present the best way for Arteta to qualify for Europe as it offers a place in the Europa League.

But the 37-year-old knows the lure of Champions League football is important not only to bring in new faces but also keep hold of key talent like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

“I think it is a no-brainer,” Arteta replied when asked if it was easier to get players to sign when Champions League football was on offer.

“Every player in the world wants to play Champions League and, if you talk about having this option on the table, players are in a much more open way to join this club or to renew their contract or to convince anybody because we want to be in that competition.

“It will be difficult but this is the situation we are in now. We’ve been in that situation because we haven’t performed as well as the other top four clubs have been doing.

“That’s the reality and we have to face that reality face to face and try to make the best decisions.”

  • Liverpool, Arsenal monitoring Ndicka

Liverpool and Arsenal have been monitoring the Eintracht Frankfurt defender Evan Ndicka this season.

They had been among the clubs tracking the France Under-21 international before the suspension of football across Europe due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

Spanish sides Valencia and Sevilla and the two Milan clubs have also been keen on Ndicka, who is one of a limited number of promising left-footed centre-backs.

Arsenal signed Pablo Mari – a left-footed centre-back – from Flamengo in January, albeit on an initial loan deal, although they do have the option to make the transfer permanent this summer.

Premier League leaders Liverpool, meanwhile, could be in the market for a new centre-back due to the uncertain future of Dejan Lovren, who has made only nine Premier League starts this season.

It is also uncertain whether the UK transfer window will open as scheduled on June 18, with no definitive date for when the current domestic season will be resumed.

Sky Sports News reported this week that FIFA is reviewing the situation with regards to player registrations, with the possibility that players could run out of contract at clubs before the season restarts.

However, clubs are understood to be continuing their research and due diligence into potential transfer targets, despite scouts currently being unable to watch them in games.

Ndicka, 20, has made 14 starts and one substitute appearance in the Bundesliga this season, more recently being deployed as a left-back, including in the Europa League last-32 triumph over RB Salzburg and last-16 first-leg defeat to Basel.

  • Arsenal: Lucas Torreira suffers fractured ankle during FA Cup win at Portsmouth

Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira suffered a fractured ankle during Monday’s FA Cup fifth round win against Portsmouth.

Torreira, 24, had to be carried off on a stretcher after just 16 minutes following a challenge by Portsmouth defender James Bolton.

No timescale has yet been put on his recovery, with Arsenal waiting for “further specialist reviews”.

Torreira has made 33 appearances for Arsenal this season.

Meanwhile, defender Kieran Tierney is back in full training after recovering from a dislocated shoulder.

Injuries have restricted the Scotland international to just 11 appearances for the Gunners since signing from Celtic last summer.

Arsenal are also hopeful Cedric Soares will return to full training next week after recovering from a knee injury, with Sead Kolasinac due to resume training by the end of the month after a shoulder problem.

  • Arsenal edge Everton in five-goal cracker

Arsenal came out on top in a five-goal thriller as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s double gave them a 3-2 victory over Everton in the Premier League on Super Sunday.

In-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring for Everton after just 49 seconds with an intuitive acrobatic effort, but Eddie Nketiah levelled with just his second Premier League goal from early sub Bukayo Saka’s brilliant cross (27).

Aubameyang put Arsenal ahead with a neat finish inside the box (33), but Richarlison poked Everton level late in the half as the hosts failed to clear a set piece (45+4) in a game where defensive solidity was not the order of the day.

Arsenal took just 22 seconds to regain the lead in the second half through Aubameyang’s header (46), before Calvert-Lewin missed two fine chances late on.

The result means Arsenal leapfrog Everton into ninth, seven points off the top four with 11 to play. Everton are a point further back in 11th.

  • Lacazette goal gives Arsenal advantage

Arsenal took a big step towards the Europa League last 16 as Alexandre Lacazette’s late strike secured a 1-0 win away to Olympiakos in the first leg of their round-of-32 tie.

Lacazette converted from close range in the 81st minute after Bukayo Saka had latched onto Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s pass and sent the ball across the six-yard box.

Arsenal had survived some awkward moments before that, with Bernd Leno making some fine saves, but they could have put the tie out of Olympiakos’s reach in the closing stages, with Lacazette spurning another opportunity and Sokratis striking the woodwork with a header.

The Gunners still take a lead back to the Emirates Stadium, though, extending their unbeaten run to nine games under Mikel Arteta, and they will be confident of reaching the next round of the Europa League when they welcome Olympiakos to the Emirates Stadium for next week’s second leg.

  • Some Arsenal players had bad attitudes – Emery

Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery has accused some of his ex-players of not having “a good attitude” in a stout defence of his 18-month reign at the Emirates Stadium.

The Spaniard was relieved of his duties in November last year after a run of seven games in all competitions without a win, with the Gunners eight points adrift of the Premier League’s top four.

He departed amid claims that he had struggled to motivate the club’s biggest names, although he has hit back at those suggestions and insisted he was turning things around.

Unai Emery told France Football: “Arsenal was a club on a downward slope for two years before I arrived. We stopped this fall and even began to rebuild the club with the Europa League final and fifth place in the league, only one point off Tottenham despite the fact that we took just one point in our final five matches.

“We had Champions League qualification in our grasp and it went wrong in the end. But it was a good season and we had this notion of continuing to improve.

“But we lost our four captains: [Laurent] Koscielny, [Petr] Cech, [Aaron] Ramsey and [Nacho] Monreal. They were personalities that we missed this season to stay on the right track, and some stars did not have a good attitude and asked for more than what they were giving back.

“Taking all of that into account, we needed time to succeed with our transition to a new Arsenal, which is what I wanted.”

Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette have both gone public with comments that they feel the team has united under new manager Mikel Arteta’s tactical philosophy.

“As a team, we are much happier and everyone wants to give everything for this club,” said Ozil.

  • Arteta apologises for ‘nasty’ Auba tackle

Mikel Arteta apologised for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s red card tackle on Max Meyer, calling it “nasty” but insisted it was an out of character challenge.

Arsenal were reduced to 10 men in the second half of their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace when VAR intervened to send off Aubameyang for a dangerous tackle after referee Paul Tierney had originally booked the player.

Max Meyer’s foot gave way under him, twisting his ankle at a horrific angle from the force of the Arsenal’s striker tackle and the Palace man was immediately substituted with manager Roy Hodgson believing he’s suffered ankle ligament damage.

Arteta had no complaints with the decision to upgrade the punishment from a yellow to a red card.

Read:Arsenal pegged back by Palace after Aubameyang red card

He said: “I’ve just seen it and it looked nasty to be fair – knowing Auba there is no intention to make that tackle – hopefully the player hasn’t been injured. Sorry for that.”

Arsenal looked in full control of the match in the first half after Aubameyang’s opener but allowed Palace to equalise courtesy of a deflected Jordan Ayew strike.

“I think the first 35 minutes were exactly what I want our Arsenal team to play like,” Arteta said.

“We were at it, we were very dominant, we controlled the game, we were in the right positions and we were so good in transition.

“After that we had a spell when we started to give free-kicks away, it’s more stop-start, but I was really pleased with the first half. The first 10 minutes of the second half, credit to them because they pushed, put balls in the box and threw men up front. We had more difficulties.

Read:Arsenal appoint ex-midfielder Mikel Arteta as head coach

“We conceded a goal where we switched off completely and it’s unacceptable, I am upset with that, but after that we reacted very well after conceding goal and after Auba’s red card, we were the team that I expected because everyone was at it again.”

Lucas Torreira was substituted at half-time in the draw having been seen struggling with a muscle problem for various parts of the first half.

Arteta said: “It’s a muscle injury. We’ll have to assess it with the doctors tomorrow. We will know more the day after.”

Crystal Palace manager Hodgson concurred with Arteta that Aubameyang’s challenge was worthy of a red card but thought it was an accidental bad challenge.

“He’s not happy,” Hodgson said when asked about how Meyer felt about the challenge.

Read:Tariq Lamptey makes Chelsea debut in Arsenal win, Lampard praises

“I knew it was a bad challenge but I’d like to emphasise Aubameyang hasn’t deliberately tried injuring the player. It’s the type of challenges forwards can make when chasing back. There’s no doubt it’s a red card and a bad challenge. I’m just surprised we had to wait so long for the decision.

“The position of ankle isn’t pleasant – I’ll be very surprised if there’s no ligament damage. He was very upbeat in the sense he’ll be OK and he’ll get over it but we must wait until Monday when the doctors report back.”

  • Arsenal pegged back by Palace after Aubameyang red card

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring at Crystal Palace on Saturday but was later sent off as the hosts fought back to draw 1-1 at Selhurst Park.

New Gunners boss Mikel Arteta was on course for a third straight win when his skipper made the breakthrough in the first half, but a deflected effort by Jordan Ayew cancelled it out early in the second period.

When Aubameyang received a red card with 23 minutes left, the experienced Roy Hodgson would have fancied his chances of gaining three points against the youngest manager in the league and but had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Read:Arsenal sack Unai Emery after 18 months in charge

Arsenal’s difficulties this season were highlighted by the fact this was the first time Palace were facing the Gunners after Christmas in a top-flight match with the Eagles higher in the table.

Hodgson was boosted by the return of Wilfried Zaha after he missed the defeat to Derby with a knock but new loan signing Cenk Tosun was only named on the bench.

Captain Aubameyang was recalled by Arteta after sitting out the FA Cup win over Leeds and opened the scoring at Selhurst Park in the 12th minute.

Mesut Ozil’s licence to roam had already caused the hosts problems and he moved inside to combine with Alexandre Lacazette, who played in his fellow forward to curl into the bottom corner for his 16th goal of the season.

    Read:Aubameyang named new Arsenal captain

It was a breathtaking Arsenal move, which started with a brave through ball between the lines by David Luiz, and Palace struggled to gain possession during the opening 30 minutes.

Zaha cut a frustrated figure and this was highlighted when he shoved Nicolas Pepe into Lucas Torreira, with the visiting pair needing treatment.

    – Palace settle –

The Eagles slowly settled into the London derby and Cheikhou Kouyate had their first effort of note shortly before half-time, which Bernd Leno unconvincingly parried.

Arteta introduced Matteo Guendouzi at half-time, with Torreira not returning but Palace continued to win free kicks in dangerous positions after the break.

Eventually they made one count, when Jairo Riedewald found Max Meyer in space down the right. His cross was poor, but Kouyate was first to it and set up Ayew, who saw his strike take a big deflection off Luiz and loop over Leno in the 54th minute.

Read:Aubameyang ready to quit Arsenal as he pulls out of contract talks

Arsenal’s problems deepened when Aubameyang caught Meyer high on the ankle with a poor challenge by the touchline.

Referee Paul Tierney showed a yellow card but VAR had a look and after a two-and-a-half minute delay, the caution was upgraded to a sending off.

Aubameyang was distraught as he left the pitch in the 67th minute and Meyer had to follow him down the tunnel after failing to recover from the tackle.

That allowed Hodgson to introduce Tosun for his debut, while Arteta withdrew Ozil for Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli.

James Tomkins almost produced a winner 12 minutes from time, but his header was cleared off the line by Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Arsenal then almost stole it.

Vicente Guaita came to the rescue though, when he superbly tipped Pepe’s shot on to the post and saved Lacazette’s follow-up in the 83rd minute as it finished all square.

Arsenal progressed to the last 32 of the Europa League as Group F winners after late goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Bukayo Saka rescued a 2-2 draw at Standard Liege.

The Gunners only needed to avoid defeat by five goals to book their spot in the knockout stages, but for much of the night they were heading to Monday’s draw as an unseeded team after Standard Liege took a two-goal lead thanks to deflected strikes in the second half from Samuel Bastien (47) and Selim Amallah (69).

With Eintracht Frankfurt leading Vitoria Guimaraes 2-1 until the 85th minute in the group’s other game, second spot was looking likely for Arsenal, but goals from Lacazette (78) and Saka (81), coupled with Vitoria’s late turnaround in Germany to win 3-2, saw Freddie Ljungberg’s side rescue a point and reclaim top spot.

The result means Arsenal, who face Manchester City live on Sky Sports on Super Sunday, will be seeded for Monday’s last-32 draw in Nyon, while Standard Liege, who needed to win to have any chance of progressing, exit the competition.

Backed by their passionate home support, Standard Liege, who knew they needed a win to stand any chance of progressing to knockout stages, started brightly but most of Arsenal’s problems came from their own doing.

Konstantinos Mavropanos’ slack pass gifted possession to Mehdi Carcela on the edge of the penalty area, but luckily for the Gunners the Standard Liege forward scuffed his shot straight into the arms of Emiliano Martinez.

  • Arsenal fight back to flatten Hammers

Three goals in nine second-half minutes gave Arsenal a 3-1 victory at West Ham, ending their nine-match winless streak.

After a slow start, West Ham took the lead as Angelo Ogbonna’s header deflected off Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ head and wrongfooted Bernd Leno (38).

Arsenal were distinctly sub-par for an hour, failing to register a shot on target until Gabriel Martinelli netted from 12 yards on his first Premier League start (60), before their second shot on target saw Nicolas Pepe curl a beauty past David Martin from just inside the box having cut in from the right (66).

They hit their third in just nine minutes as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck on the volley unmarked from close range (69), and that’s how it stayed as Freddie Ljungberg won for the first time as interim head coach. Arsenal move up to ninth, while West Ham stay 16th, a point above the drop zone.

The majority of the first half at the London Stadium epitomized the two sides’ form: bereft of confidence and midfield quality.

Aubameyang sought to do a lot of Arsenal’s attacking by himself, doing well to get to the byline, only to see his lifted cross headed over by Mesut Ozil from eight yards, while at the other end Michail Antonio forced a good save from Bernd Leno at an angle.

The sloppiness of the goal was befitting of the first-half action. Pablo Fornals’ right-wing cross met Ogbonna 12 yards out, who nodded onto Maitland-Niles’ own head, deflecting the ball into the far corner past Leno. Though VAR had a look to see if Ogbonna had in fact handled the ball home, replays were inconclusive.

Arsenal’s defending of Ogbonna’s effort was heavily criticised in the MNF studio at half-time, with Granit Xhaka’s attempts to put the West Ham man off described as “shocking” by Jamie Carragher.

It looked more likely that West Ham would score the second goal, coming forward at will in the early stages of the second half, but Arsenal scored three in nine minutes to flatten the hosts.

First, Martinelli struck low into the bottom corner from 12 yards from a break after Sead Kolasinac’s fine centre from the left, before Pepe showed a rare glimpse of his £72m worth, cutting inside from the right to curl into the far corner from just inside the box.

  • Arsenal sack Unai Emery after 18 months in charge

Unai Emery has been sacked as Arsenal manager after 18 months in charge.

The Spaniard, who previously led Paris St-Germain to the French league title and won three Europa Leagues with Sevilla, was appointed Gunners boss in May 2018, succeeding Arsene Wenger.

He is to be replaced on a temporary basis by assistant and former Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljungberg.

We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”

  • Arsenal fans lash out at ‘rudderless’ board

Arsenal fan groups have united to issue a statement accusing owner Stan Kroenke of “rudderless” leadership, leaving the club “floating aimlessly”.

The #WeCareDoYou campaign launched in July as a protest against the Arsenal board with a supporting petition signed by over 100,000 fans who felt “a disconnect from the club”.

Arsenal fans booed their team off following a 2-2 draw with Southampton on Saturday, extending a run of six games without a win in all competitions.

Head coach Unai Emery has been given public backing by the Arsenal hierarchy, but is under mounting pressure to improve the team’s performances.

The fan statement made no direct reference to Emery, but reiterated their concerns about an “alarming and desperate state of things on and off the pitch that need urgent action”.

It read: “We have been told to ‘get excited’ and to support the team. As Arsenal supporters we have done both.

“There exist many issues raised in our first statement that remain unaddressed by the club. While these matters have not gone away, it is the overall alarming and desperate state of things on and off the pitch that need urgent action and take precedence amongst our concerns.

“Until the club and especially the senior management structure is running efficiently, effectively and ambitiously, then few other issues can or will be satisfactorily resolved.

“The early optimism of summer, around what appeared to be good business and positive signings, has given way to renewed concerns about the club’s overall direction and the leadership of the owner. It feels like the club is rudderless and floating aimlessly, unsure of its destination.”

  • Aubameyang named new Arsenal captain

Granit Xhaka has been stripped of the Arsenal captaincy, manager Unai Emery has confirmed, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang taking over the armband.

Xhaka, who was named the Gunners’ permanent skipper in late September, succeeded Laurent Koscielny in the role.

But he has increasingly come under fire from supporters with abuse aimed at his conduct and performances, culminating in a encounter with fans during Arsenal’s game with Crystal Palace on October 27.

He has not played for the club since and was left out of their squad for their Europa League trip to Portugal later this week, leading to speculation that he has played his final game for the club.

Reportedly elected to the captaincy on a full-time basis by his team-mates following a number of rotating skippers, Xhaka and the playing group were informed on Tuesday morning of the change in leadership.

Aubameyang, who joined in January 2018, is currently in his second full season at the Emirates Stadium, having claimed the Premier League Golden Boot last term.

The France-born Gabon international has been a standout performer since his arrival in North London and is likely to prove a popular choice to take on the armband.

Xhaka previously apologised for his actions following his substitution against Palace, during which he was seen to cup his ear in response to abuse from sections of the fanbase, whose escalating campaign against the 27-year-old has been brewing for much of the season.

“The scenes that took place around my substitution have moved me deeply,” he stated. “I love this club and always give 100% on and off the pitch.

“My feeling of not being understood by fans, and repeated abusive comments at matches and in social media over the last weeks and months, have hurt me deeply.

“People have said things like, ‘We will break your legs’, ‘Kill your wife’ and ‘Wish that your daughter gets cancer’. That has stirred me up and I reached boiling point when I felt the rejection in the stadium on Sunday.”

  • Arsenal distance themselves from Mourinho rumours amid Emery troubles

Arsenal are distancing themselves from a possible move for Jose Mourinho, with Unai Emery still having the support of the club’s hierarchy, sources have told ESPN FC.

Mourinho would be keen to speak to Arsenal should Emery be sacked this season, sources have told ESPN FC, but a move for the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss appears some way off at present.

It was claimed that Mourinho met Raul Sanllehi, Arsenal’s head of football, for dinner recently but sources have told ESPN FC that no such meeting took place. The two men have not seen each other for some time.

The chance to win trophies with three Premier League clubs would appeal to Mourinho, who won three titles with Chelsea, but he would need assurances that the conditions were suitable to allow a serious challenge at silverware.

Arsenal have lost two games this season but there are still 27 Premier League games to play in which the team’s fortunes can improve.

After a 1-1 draw at home to Wolves on Saturday, Emery’s men slipped six points off the top four.

“I’m more demanding of myself and feel a responsibility to work and come back better,” Emery said after the match.

The Arsenal coach’s contract expires at the end of the season, although there is an additional one-year option.

When asked whether he was concerned about his future in the wake of three draws in a week, Emery replied: “We speak about how we can improve and how to achieve the best performance.”

Mourinho, out of work since being sacked by Manchester United last December, is not considered the top choice when the time comes to appoint a new manager.
