The Rapperholic Concert usually happens every year on December 25 in Accra. It has been held for twelve years in a row and is one of the biggest shows in December.

Otumfuo destools Denyasehemaa over violation of sacred oath

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially removed Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II from her position as the Queen of the Denyase Traditional Council in the Ashanti Region.

This decision was made during an Asanteman Council meeting on October 14, 2024. The destoolment followed accusations that Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II had violated the sacred great oath of the Ashanti kingdom, a serious offence marked by an act of treacherous invocation.

Although the Queen pleaded for leniency during the hearing, her appeal was met with strong opposition from the majority of the council members, leading to her destoolment.

“Nana, we cannot forgive her because the great oath must be paramount in all our dealings, so violating the terms of the oath is unacceptable,” one of the chiefs said.

Goasomanhene added, “My biggest fear here is the oath that is involved, so pleading on her behalf will be difficult because the sacred oath is involved.”

“Otumfuo linguist, all the chiefs have said that they cannot work with her, so she must go,” another affirmed.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasised the sanctity of the great oath and the imperative to uphold Asante customs without exception.

“In safeguarding the Golden Stool and the great oath entrusted to me, I must ensure fidelity to our traditions,” he said.

“As the elders have said that we don’t invoke the great oath in vain, when I became the Asantehene I was told I did not have a mother, a brother, or anybody, and the only thing I have is the Golden Stool and the Great Oath to protect.”

“I really like the queen…I call her my old lady, but going against the great oath, I have to go by what the tradition says. If I forgive her, then who should I punish if the person does the same? We have to tell the truth to people. She is at fault; she is a family member. If she doesn’t have the money, she can come, and I will give her money, but to violate the great oath, no, she can’t sit on the throne anymore.”

The controversy surrounding Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II’s royal lineage came to a head after a committee was set up to investigate her royalty status after she was challenged by Achiasebaapanin Nana Akua Afriyie, who invoked the Great Oath in support of her stance.

Nana Akua Afriyie’s claim that Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II was not a rightful royal was met with a direct counter by the Denyasehemaa, invoking the Great Oath to challenge the accusation.

Nana Afriyie, on her part, denied having any familial ties to the Denyasehemaa, while Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II asserted the opposite.

As a result, both parties were tasked with providing their traditional family lineages for review by the committee. Upon investigation, the committee determined that Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II was indeed not a royal and had no direct relation to Achiase, contradicting her earlier claims.

After the committee’s findings were submitted to Otumfuo, he remarked that the Denyasehemaa could have avoided her predicament if she had refrained from invoking the counter-oath in the first place.

“Denyasehemaa could have used peace to her advantage, but she chose quite the opposite. And since the investigation has brought this to light, I have no choice but to put the stool where it truly belongs.”

Denyasehemaa was therefore fined four rams for the counter-invocation of the Great Oath in vain during the committee’s sitting.

Dormaahene challenging Ashanti Kingdom has made Otumfuo more proactive – Prophet Azuka

Prophet Isaac Appiah, also known as Prophet Azuka, head of Shining Grace Chapel International, recently commented on the public discord between Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II. He believes that this conflict has had a positive impact on the Asante people.

According to Prophet Azuka, Dormaahene’s criticisms have prompted Otumfuo to approach his duties with greater diligence, benefiting the Ashanti populace. The prophet noted that Otumfuo has started removing subchiefs who have failed to perform their duties properly, thereby reinforcing the kingdom’s authority.

In a video posted by Express GH TV on YouTube, Prophet Azuka remarked on the increased dynamism within the Ashanti Kingdom since Otumfuo’s ascension to the throne.

He stated that Dormaahene’s challenges have led Otumfuo to take decisive actions, such as deposing insubordinate subchiefs and resolving illegal land claims. This, he believes, has enhanced the prestige and effectiveness of Ashanti rule.

Prophet Azuka also mentioned that people now prefer to resolve land disputes at the palace, attributing this change to the influence of Dormaahene’s challenges. He praised the Ashanti Kingdom’s royal heritage and noted that the recent challenges have added to its splendor.

Previously, Dormaahene accused Asantehene of worsening the Sampa chieftaincy dispute through his involvement. He argued that Asantehene’s actions were a direct challenge to the legal system and the traditional authority of Bono chiefs. Dormaahene presented these allegations to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and his delegation during their visit to the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, asserting that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was responsible for the ongoing conflict in Sampa.

  • ‘Dwetɛ kuduo’: The ‘mysterious’ object that gives the Asantehene ‘divine powers’

‘Dwetɛ kuduo’: The ‘mysterious’ object that gives the Asantehene ‘divine powers’

In the realm of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a peculiar item has captured the attention of keen observers: the ‘Dwetɛ Kuduo.’ This enigmatic object, consistently present during the Asantehene’s public appearances, holds a significant role in the traditions of the Ashanti Kingdom.

According to Facebook handle, The Kingdom of Asante , the ‘Dwetɛ Kuduo’ is an oval-shaped object colloquially known as the Silver Casket. It is carried by the Dwetɛkuduohene, Nana Osei Kuffour, either positioned in front of or beside the Asantehene.

Though not technically a stool, the ‘Dwetɛ Kuduo’ precedes the stool carriers during the Asantehene’s palanquin processions. It also holds a place of prominence in the absence of the Asantehene, placed before the King’s stool.

The significance of the ‘Dwetɛ Kuduo’ traces back to the founding of the Ashanti Kingdom. According to historical accounts, Komfo Anokye, after unifying the Ashanti divisions with the Golden Stool, deemed it necessary to obtain the ‘Dwetɛ Kuduo’ from Nana Adu Gyamfi, the Bodweseanwohene, to ensure victory in wars and strengthen the Ashanti Kingdom.

Komfo Anokye attested to the special powers possessed by the ‘Dwetɛ Kuduo,’ essential for reinforcing the authority of the Golden Stool. The ‘Dwetɛ Kuduo’ symbolizes strength, guidance, knowledge, and bravery, crucial for defending the kingdom against adversaries.

Despite facing seven defeats in battles against Nana Adu Gyamfi, Opemsuo Osei Tutu I, in consultation with Komfo Anokye, devised a strategic plan to secure the ‘Dwetɛ Kuduo’ without resorting to force. This involved deploying Deɛboɔsohene as an undercover agent to infiltrate Bodweseanwoh and seize the object.

After years of intelligence gathering and building relationships, Deɛboɔsohene succeeded in obtaining the ‘Dwetɛ Kuduo,’ marking a significant victory for the Ashanti Kingdom. To commemorate this achievement, a carrier was appointed, giving rise to the role of the Dwetɛkuduohene.

The ‘Dwetɛ Kuduo’ plays a pivotal role in the enstoolment ceremonies of newly installed Asantehenes. It is also invoked during moments of crisis or when adjudicating complex cases, believed to transmit strength and power to the Asantehene.

The intricate history and significance of the ‘Dwetɛ Kuduo’ is underscored in this The Kingdom of Asante post on Facebook, below.

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II shares stories from his upbringing and childhood

During his 74th birthday dinner on Monday, May 6, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II unveiled a personal narrative that shed light on his intentionally obscured royal lineage during his formative years.

The Asantehene disclosed why he was unable to attend his preferred institution, Prempeh College in Kumasi, during his revelatory speech.

He revealed that his uncle, the then Asantehene Nana Agyemang Prempeh II, purposefully shielded him from his regal heritage, a fact that only came to light later in his life.

Otumfuo recounted being raised away from Manhyia, the royal palace, by his uncle under the guise of being his biological son.

The circumstances surrounding this revelation were detailed by Otumfuo, explaining that his mother had initially sought a divorce from his father due to alleged infidelity.

However, his uncle intervened and persuaded his mother against it, citing that he hadn’t yet achieved his desired outcome from the marriage.

This intervention ultimately led to Otumfuo’s birth and upbringing under his uncle’s guidance.

Additionally, Otumfuo shared how his uncles diverted him from attending Prempeh College, opting instead to enroll him in a different high school.

In his own words, Otumfuo stated: “So, about four years after my birth, I was given to my uncle Kwadwo Bonsu, called Oheneba Mensah Bonsu who was then Hiahene. It was a ploy between my mother and uncle because my uncle didn’t want me to be raised in royalty.”

This narrative, shared during his birthday celebrations, offered a rare glimpse into the intricate family dynamics and decisions that shaped Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s early life, highlighting the hidden complexities of royal lineage and personal aspirations.

    Read his narration below:

“So, about four years after my birth, I was given to my uncle Kwadwo Bonsu, called Oheneba Mensah Bonsu who was then Hiahene.

“It was a ploy between my mother and uncle because my uncle didn’t want me to be raised in royalty.

“So, my uncle took me in as his son. He told me I came after his eldest son, Afodour, and up until recently, I thought I came after him. He sent me to a division school and took care of me. “They didn’t even want me to know Manhyia so they never brought me there.

“My biological mother used to come to our house at Ashtown under the guise of visiting her brother, my uncle.

“Once in a while, Nana Asantehene would come and I’ll be asked to serve him and he would ask about my wellbeing but because they weren’t saying anything, I didn’t know him. Through that, I completed division school and had to enter secondary school.

“My uncle took me to Osae to get all my prospectus for Prempeh College. The current Adontenhene’s mother was the one who bought my prospectus.

“I was there one day when they came to tell me I was going to be transferred to a different school from Prempeh. Most of my friends from Ashtown were all at Prempeh College so I also wanted to be there. K.Y. Asafo Adjei, Mark Addo, Kwabena Poku, and others were all there.

“But because they knew what they were doing, it was Sehwi Wiawso that they took me to. Mr. Osae was the headmaster [at Prempeh College] and he said a disciplinarian friend of his had been transferred from Opoku Ware to Sehwi Wiawso so they would take me there.

“Everything had been orchestrated between my two uncles, (Oheneba Mensah Bonsu and Nana Agyemang Prempeh II, then Asantehene.)

“He said Sehwi Wiawso chief is my son, send him there, if he needs something, he will take care of him. After school my elder brother had arrived and he had gained admission at IPS (now UPSA) to go and study accountancy so he asked him to hand me over to my father’s brother, Engineer Asafo Boakye,” he recounted.

If Otumfuo can fund the Jubilee Hall project alone then gov’t has failed its citizens – Arnold

Prominent entertainment commentator, Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo has expressed admiration for Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II‘s initiative in constructing the state-of-the-art Jubilee Hall in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

Asamoah-Baidoo commended the monarch for independently financing such a grand project, highlighting a stark contrast to the state’s shortcomings in providing essential infrastructure for its citizens.

He questioned the government’s failure to undertake similar ventures that would both showcase the nation’s cultural heritage and boost economic growth.

During an interview on the United Showbiz program aired on UTV and monitored by GhanaWeb, Asamoah-Baidoo emphasised, “If an individual can solely fund such a magnificent building project [Jubilee Hall] that everyone is impressed with, while the state has been struggling to put up something similar in the last 8 years, then there is a big problem. If we have moved from large theatres to renovating the centre for national culture to amphitheatres without making a meaningful impact, then we have something to address.

“If one person can put up a structure that the nation has been unable to do in the last 20 years, then it is problematic,” Arnold told MzGee during the United Showbiz programme aired on UTV and monitored by GhanaWeb.

He continued by praising the Asantehene’s foresight, noting that the cultural exhibits and artefacts housed within the Jubilee Hall hold significant economic potential for the community.

In conclusion, Asamoah-Baidoo urged recognition for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s contributions, underlining the importance of such initiatives in promoting national heritage and prosperity.

About the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Jubilee Hall

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Monday, April 15, 2024, commissioned a majestic hall for the Ashanti Kingdom named after him – the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Jubilee Hall.

According to manhyiapalace.org, the magnificent traditional yet ultramodern edifice has a 400-capacity cocktail lounge, offices, a 2000-capacity fully air-conditioned and acoustically designed hall, about 60 washrooms, a parking lot, and a state-of-the-art kitchen.

The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Jubilee Hall also has a 150-capacity car park and a compound. The interior of the hall has elaborate detailing of traditional designs.

For instance, the walls show a three-dimensional replica of the Golden Stool, a man playing the talking drum, and several Adinkra symbols.

Speaking at the hall’s commissioning, Juabenhene, Nana Otu Siriboe II, said it would host private Asanteman meetings, get-togethers, symposiums, cultural performances, and other events.

He also disclosed that the hall was named after the Asantehene to immortalize the king’s legacy for future generations.

On the project’s funding, the Juabenhene said that the Asantehene, even though he could have relied on his sub-chiefs to fund the project, decided to fully fund it himself.

Manhyia rep confirms Otumfuo has donated $5 million towards the KATH project

Representative at the Manhyia Palace, Nana Poku Bra, has confirmed that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has generously donated five million dollars to the ‘Heal the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’ initiative.

The revelation came during a discussion with Omanhene Adu Boakye of Sompa FM, who sought clarification on the matter from palace representatives.

The conversation about Otumfuo’s donation arose while discussing plans for the celebration of the Asantehene’s 25th year of reign.

The host of Sompa FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ show said, “We are told that the Asantehene donated 5 million dollars. 5million dollars!”

Nana Poku Bra responded, “Yes his personal support.”

Intrigued by the confirmation, Omanhene Adu Boakye continued, “Do you know the worth of one million dollars in cedis? It’s 130 billion Ghana cedis. So, multiply this by five.”

The host continued by addressing individuals who have criticised the Asantehene for seeking funds to renovate the hospital instead of fully financing it himself.

He argued that no traditional leader in Ghana has the capacity to single-handedly fund such a large-scale project. He emphasised that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is fulfilling his role as a respected leader by seeking contributions to support the initiative.

“If a king of this calibre is talking, then people are criticising him. How many people can donate this amount? Which kingdom in Ghana? Then some clueless people will be claiming that the Asantehene is begging for funds to establish the project,” he stated

The Manhyia rep, who concurred with Omanhene’s statement added, “Otumfuo is capable of building that hospital alone. It’s just a nice thing to see others support.”

    KATH donations yielding results

Head of the Public Affairs Department,Kwame Frimpong, revealed that the hospital has raised half of the estimated $10 million required for the renovation project.

He emphasized that the appeal for support made by the Asantehene to renovate the 70-year-old Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has been effective, with both individuals and corporate entities continuing to contribute to the cause. Mr. Frimpong made this disclosure following a donation of 300,000 Ghana cedis by the private institution OFI Ghana to support the initiative.

Talks to bring Asante regalia home began over 50 years ago – Agyemang-Duah

Prominent Ghanaian historian and advisor to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Dr. Ivor Agyemang-Duah, has provided insights into successful negotiations with the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum, paving the way for the return of Asante regalia to the Manhyia Palace in Ghana.

In a groundbreaking cultural collaboration, plans have been unveiled for the display of gold and silver regalia associated with the Asante royal court at the Palace Museum in Kumasi.

This display is part of a significant long-term loan commitment by the V&A and the British Museum.

The historic announcement signifies a momentous occasion, as regal items unseen in Ghana for over 150 years are set to return to their roots. Dr. Ivor Agyemang-Duah revealed that negotiations took place during the Asantehene’s visit to London in 2023, and the discussions unfolded over the last nine months.

Speaking on Citi Breakfast Show, Dr. Agyemang-Duah emphasized the concerns raised by past Asante rulers regarding the regalia held by the British Museum.

He mentioned the critical significance of the current year, marking 150 years since the war, 100 years since the return of Agyemang Prempeh from exile, and 25 years of the reign of the current Asantehene Osei Tutu II.

Dr. Agyemang-Duah explained that the artefacts would be sorted to identify those that were looted, specifying that the ones from the Victoria & Albert Museum were stolen.

When questioned about loaning stolen regalia to the Manhyia Palace, he underscored the strict laws governing the UK museums, preventing the permanent return of objects that were looted or stolen.

People want to drive Ashantis out of Ghana – Otumfuo tackles rising enmity against his people

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has warned his subjects, including chiefs, to be careful of becoming enemies of the kingdom and allowing themselves to cause the downfall of Asanteman.

He he urged caution among the Ashanti community, acknowledging that there are individuals who harbour intentions to displace them from the country.

“You all should be very careful because they wish they could drive all of us out of this country. We are envied in the Ghana that we live in, some wish we could just be ejected. So, if you are in the kingdom, be careful,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed.

However, he lamented that the kingdom is now facing threats from within, as some of his subjects are showing ingratitude and disloyalty to the Golden Stool and the Asantehene.

Otumfuo cautioned the Ashantis to be wary of such actions and utterances, as they could undermine the unity and stability of the kingdom and the nation.

The Asantehene’s address also reflected upon the historical resilience of the Ashanti people, notably highlighting the failed attempts of colonial powers to seize the symbolic Golden Stool.

He remarked, “Isn’t it amazing, the Whiteman came and tried as much as they could but all of that led to nothing. The Whiteman was with weapons and ammunitions but never got to even sight the Golden Stool.”

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed disappointment at the current state of affairs, where enmity appears to come from within the Ashanti community itself. He lamented, “But because of ingratitude, Ashantis are now our own enemies, causing our own destruction.”

Otumfuo also appealed to his subjects to support his efforts to redeem the image of the kingdom and to promote development, peace and harmony in Asanteman and Ghana.

“Be careful otherwise they will soon drive us away” – Otumfuo warns Ashantis

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a stern warning to his subjects, including chiefs, cautioning them against becoming adversaries of the Ashanti kingdom and inadvertently contributing to its downfall.

His admonishment is rooted in the perception that the kingdom has garnered envy and animosity from some quarters in Ghana.

The monarch’s message, delivered during a recent address, underscores the need for vigilance within the Ashanti community to safeguard the kingdom’s heritage.

“We are envied in the Ghana that we live in, some wish we could just be ejected. So, if you are in the kingdom, be careful. Isn’t it amazing, the Whiteman came and tried as much as they could but all of that led to nothing,” he noted.

Otumfuo expressed concern that elements within the kingdom could potentially become instruments of its destruction, and he called for heightened caution.

Reflecting on the history of the Ashanti kingdom, the Asantehene noted the resilience displayed when faced with external threats. “Isn’t it amazing, the Whiteman came and tried as much as they could but all of that led to nothing.

“The Whiteman was with weapons and ammunitions but never got to see the Golden Stool,” he remarked, highlighting the kingdom’s historic defiance against colonial powers.

However, Otumfuo lamented a shift in dynamics, stating, “But because of ingratitude, Ashantis are now our own enemies, causing our own destruction.” He cautioned that there are forces both within and outside the kingdom that may seek to undermine the Ashanti legacy.

“You all should be very careful because they wish they could drive all of us out of this country,” he said.

The Asantehene’s warning is a call to collective consciousness, urging Ashantis to remain united and protect their heritage. He stressed the need for vigilance to prevent any potential threats from those who may desire the downfall of the Ashanti kingdom.

The Ashanti kingdom, with its rich cultural history and traditional leadership, has been a symbol of heritage and legacy in Ghana since the 13th/17 centuries.

The current occupant of the Golden Stool, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has embarked on efforts to preserve and restore the image of the kingdom.

Recent actions by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II include the destoolment of several subchiefs for various offenses, including engaging in illegal mining and participating in the unauthorized sale of land. These measures are aimed at upholding the values and traditions of the Ashanti kingdom.

The Asantehene’s recent encounter with the people of Offinso and the Dormaahene is also noteworthy, as it reflects his commitment to maintaining order and justice within the Ashanti community.

  • Stop abusing your powers, you have no right to destool or enstool any Omanhene – Manhyia youth to Otumfuo

Stop abusing your powers, you have no right to destool or enstool any Omanhene – Manhyia youth to Otumfuo

Concerned Youth of Offinso, a collective that recently staged protests against the continuous dismissal of Dr. KK Sarpong’s nomination as Offinsohene by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has voiced strong concerns over what they perceive as an excessive exercise of authority by Manhyia on their leader.

During a press conference held in the area, the group asserted that the rejection of the nominee chosen by the Offinso kingmakers effectively amounts to harassment of their queen mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko. She oversees the selection process, and they believe this rejection diminishes her authority to carry out her responsibilities.

“Offinso is highly disappointed in how the pending chieftaincy dispute is being resolved by His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“Offinso has taken notice that Asantehene is taking advantage of the respect that our queen mother has for him and therefore overexercising his powers on our queen mother to harass and make her powerless,” part of their statement read.

The youth stated that 18 contenders were penned down for the vacant stool and were whittled down to three and finally, KK Sarpong was chosen as a successor to the late Offinsohene.

“The kingmakers unanimously accepted the nominee in good faith. If the kingmakers had rejected the nominee, the queen mother would not have an option, and we repeat that there was nothing like an objection from our kingmakers,” they added.

According to them, necessary customs, traditions and aseda nsa (drink of thanks) was given to the relevant authorities in that respect, only for the nomination to be rejected by Manhyia.

“We can state emphatically that Otumfuo has no power to enstool or destool any Omanhene and should allow the Offinso Hemaa and kingmakers to do their work,” they charged.

They rejected the often-cited reason for the rejection, stating that there was no spell cast on the Ahyiemu Royal family and that other reports had dispelled the same, yet the same “fabricated lies” are being used to block KK Sarpong.

    Otumfuo’s warning to Offinso Hemaa

According to Otumfuo, he would never countenance any actions on the part of the queen and the elders that will undermine the tradition of Asanteman when it comes to the election and selection of chiefs.

“No one can arrogate powers that do not exist to themselves. None of the elders have the right to sell land when there is no Offinsohene, specifically when it is the Offinsohene who must sign off the sale.

“There is no such power. You are to take charge until a new chief is installed and then account for your stewardship.

“So be very careful in Offinso. I am very aware of all the things you’re doing at Offinso. You’re friends with Pitin Abontengdomhene and you have recorded a tape… I am very aware of your plot, that you will go ahead and install a new chief when I travel by Monday.

“Offinso Hemaa, you are aware of this, be very careful… I would never allow you to cause the downfall of Offinso,” Otumfuo stated through his linguists in an audiotape of his Asantemen court sitting shared by Royal Palace Multimedia.

The quest for a new Offinsohene

The demise of Nana Wiafe Akenten III, late Paramount Chief of Offinso has left a vacuum which has led to a litigation over who becomes his successor.

A former GNPC CEO, Dr K. K. Sarpong, was selected by the Queen Mother of Offinso with the support of some elders has been rejected by Otumfuo.

According to Otumfuo, it is rather wrong for the queen mother to present K. K. Sarpong as a candidate by virtue of royal bloodline while history and tradition tell otherwise.

Otumfuo has thus warned Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko and the elders of Offinso to put forth their candidate through the appropriate channel or risk having him rejected permanently.

Inhabitants of Sukwei, Dweneho, and Asempanaye located in the Atwima Nwabiagya North and Ahafo Ano Southwest districts of the Ashanti Region have made a plea to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his intervention in addressing issues of unauthorized mining and illicit land transactions.

As per the inhabitants of these localities, the actions of unlawful miners are causing harm to their cocoa plantations, water sources, and woodlands.

The locals mentioned that the traditional authorities in the region have taken steps to address the issue; however, they require the assistance of the paramount ruler to bolster their efforts.

“As leaders and parents, we want to preserve these lands for the next generation so they will not go hungry. These illegal miners have destroyed our farms, and that has made food crops such as cassava so expensive. That is why we are appealing to the Asantehene to intervene.”

Other traditional leaders and residents accused the Benkumhene and family head of selling land to illegal miners.

Farmers, they claim, have come to the palace to express their outrage over the destruction of their farms and the lack of access to water caused by the destruction of water bodies as a result of illegal mining.

“The main challenge we face is that several farmers from the villages have come to complain to us about not having access to safe drinking water. We invited Benkumhene to come so that we could find a solution to the problems, but he declined. Furthermore, the family head is selling our lands to illegal miners. He’s sold the cemetery, the school grounds, and other properties. We are pleading with the Asantehene to step in. We are going through a difficult time, so we want him to step in.”

Do not interfere in his work – Asantehene warns Asante Kotoko IMC after Prosper Ogum’s new role

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has delivered a strong caution to the Interim Management Committee of Asante Kotoko, emphasising that they should refrain from meddling in the responsibilities of head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum.

The Asantehene is insistent that the coach should have the authority to sign his preferred players and make independent selections, thereby enabling him to take full responsibility for his choices.

According to a report from Kumasi-based Akoma FM, the revered patron of the Porcupine Warriors has indicated that if the coach’s decisions lead to negative outcomes, he should be prepared to face the possibility of termination.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II installed an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the operations of Asante Kotoko in preparation for the upcoming 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season.

This move follows the disbandment of the previous management team’s tenure upon its completion.

The IMC’s composition also includes former Ghana national team coach, James Akwasi Appiah, and Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi, who will assume the role of the club’s Administrative Manager, as well as Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awuah.

The primary objective of the Interim Management Committee is to fulfill the regulatory requirements for participation in the Premier League in anticipation of the approaching season.

Why Kufuor is in a wheelchair – Otumfuo tells story

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has revealed the hidden circumstances that led to Ghana’s former President John Agyekum Kufuor being confined to a wheelchair.

According to the king of the Ashanti Kingdom, the former president failed to prioritize his health after he survived an accident on his way to the castle while he was president.

He detailed that former president John Agyekum Kufuor decided to put the country above himself when he had the accident despite his advice to him not to overwork.

    Speaking at a dinner in Ransford in the United Kingdom (UK), Otumfuo said;

“He cannot walk and I said to him that it was his own fault. He had an accident on his way to the Castle, he was safe and went to the 37 military hospital and returned to the Presidency to work. I called him from Kumasi and he said [I’m in the office].

I asked what are you doing there, Ofa (Uncle)? and he said [I’m okay, nothing happened to me I’m fine]. I told him Ofa (Uncle) you better go home and rest. And I told him Ghana will still be there if you die. But he stayed in the office till 4pm before he left the office. This is the amount of sacrifice he had for Ghana,” starfmonline.com quoted Otumfuo as having said.

On November 14, 2007, former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor, also then Chairman of the African Union, escaped unhurt when a private car crashed into his vehicle, rolling it over several times.

‘The car finally rested on the sidewalk and the people around helped his security men to pull him out. The president came out holding his head’, an eyewitness said.

'I was told to change from jeans into kente cloth' - Idris Elba talks about meeting Asantehene

Idris Elba said “so I showed up in my jeans. They were like, no, ‘you got to wear this kente cloth’. It was a really fascinating day. I mean, it was beautiful and the tradition was rich.”

He noted that he was nervous when meeting the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for the first time especially since he was not familiar with how to keep the Kente cloth stable.

Idris Elba told Stephen Colbert that “so when you meet the king, typically what you have to drop the kente cloth shoulder down a little bit and then shake the King’s hand. It’s part of the tradition like a symbol of respect.”

“This is the first time I’m wearing it and underneath, you just got your shorts on. And my thing kept unravelling. I was like, ‘oh, man, I’m going to meet the king, and it’s going to fall off me and be standing there in my boxers’.”

The Luther actor said he was glad to not have had any mishap occur adding “I did my thing gently. It was actually a really beautiful time. I don’t mean to make fun of it. It was very beautiful.”

  • Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II restores land forcefully seized from owner by Amakomhene

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II restores land forcefully seized from owner by Amakomhene

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has expressed his displeasure at the bellicosity with which some traditional chiefs in Kumasi are forcibly taking lands from their owners over expired leases with impunity.

Addressing the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC) at a meeting in Manhyia Palace Kumasi, Otumfuo warned Kumasi traditional leaders to stop cheating Kumasi residents with their authority.

“I’m being accused wrongly for your unlawful activities in the region. You people are disgracing me, you all need to be careful with the things you are doing’’ he warned.

The Asante monarch issued this warning in Manhyia Palace on Thursday 23rd February 2023 when he restored a land a couple acquired in 1942 and forceful seized from them by Amakomhene Nana Adu Mensah Asare and sold to the Church of Pentecost for a Church project over an expired lease.

The angry Asantehene who spoke through his linguist Baffour Kentenkrankyi condemned Amakomhene and his sub-Chief Abontenghene and warn his Abontenghene who has been challenging his authority on land issues to be careful else he will be summoned to the palace to come and explain his authority over lands issue in their traditional area.

“When you ascended to the Amakom stool the old woman was living on the land since 1942 so even if the lease has expired there is a clear law for lease renewal. There was Amakomhene before you. So you are the only wise person to eject the old woman. Don’t you feel worried for this old woman you treated this way. What money are you looking for and disregarding traditional rules on lease management? ’’ Otumfuo questioned.

He added’’ this old woman was going to die in tears if this issue had not come to my attention and my name will not depart from her tears because Amakomhene is my “Obrempong” therefore, directly my name will be attached to the illegality. You have land because I allow you to swear the Asante oath before me. That’s why you are engaging in illegalities right ? ’’.

Otumfuo further explained “there are clear legal and traditional arrangements for restoring expired leases; you don’t just eject people from their property immediately you hear their lease has expired. You divide the said land into three, one is given to Asantehene, the woman takes one and Amakom stool also takes one. Why must you forcefully take all…. where from the intimidation? I have not given any land to your “Abontensohene” so I will not take any explaination on that because I don’t know him nor have I created any stool for him. Where from this nonsense? Asantehene fumed.

Otumfuo Further directed his anger to Nana Apagyahene, Nana Owusu Afriyie IV whom he describe as “Pagyaso moamoaso” if you cannot do the lands job just tell me. Why must issue come to me for redress while you are there? That is you job no chief can claim any land or property from it owner when the lease expires because there are clear rules on that. The woman came to you and you said Nana Amakomhene has said no to the formal arrangement and you also didn’t tell me so what are you there for? You are doing your own thing. Amakomhene is also doing his own thing. Who should I trust now? ”

While addressing the traditional leaders on lease issues, Otumfuo disclosed he is losing trust among the traditional leaders in Kumasi over how they are managing affairs without his direct involvement.

“You are making me lose my trust among you all…. I have been talking about lease issues for the past 24 years but you don’t listen. Your illegal activities are disgrace to respected Chieftaincy and me as the Asantehene’’.

Otumfuo in his final ruling directed Nana Apagyahene to send surveyors to the land and divide the said land into three one should be given to Amakomhene Nana Adu Mensah Asare, the remaining two including his(Asantehene) share should be given back to the woman for peace to prevail.

  • Invest in health research – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II charges government

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II wants the government to invest in health research for effective infectious disease surveillance.

He believes development of the country’s human resource will be the first step towards the realization of the move.

“It is time for the country to invest in clinical research which will go a long way to adequately prepare the country ahead of any pandemic.

“So, I call on the government and other relevant stakeholders to help provide the investment that will help in developing the needed human resources to help advance health research in the country,” he said.

He was speaking as part of activities to mark the 25th anniversary of the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR).

The theme for the anniversary is, “25 years of Research for Life: Sustaining Global health and Research in our Changing World.”

Otumfuo commended the staff for their hard work and various initiatives.

“The best way to change the low perception and research careers and to improve the availability of research positions to drive innovation and development in Ghana and Africa could be increased by analytical thinking among children, especially from the primary school level, in order to generate their interest in science,” he said.

25 years on, KCCR maintains a positive outlook for the future and seeks to maintain its enviable role as a major National Research Centre and to provide data to improve the wellbeing of Ghanaians through collaborative efforts.

Otumfuo donated 1 million Ghana cedis to the center. The donation was aimed at strengthening the existing cooperation among KNUST, Asanteman and KCCR.

Dr. Francis Kasolo, the WHO representative to Ghana enforced the need for interdisciplinary research.

“We need to be dynamic in all the global health research works. Institutions need to venture into multiple research areas that are relevant to the lives of citizens.

“We also need to strengthen collaboration between research institutions and universities within and outside the country to improve findings for global health and research,” he said.

KNUST Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson challenged the KCCR to strive towards tackling the country’s health challenges.

“We should try to strive to make greater strides and maintain a positive outlook for the future in our collective efforts to find solutions to the myriad of problems of society,” she said.

  • Some chiefs sold OKESS lands and spent the monies before my enstoolment – Otumfuo laments

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has lamented about the sale of lands belonging to Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS).

Addressing a colourful durbar for the 85th anniversary of his alma mater on October 8, the revered king stated that it was painful for such a thing to have occurred.

Otumfuo said that even upon his ascension to the throne, he got wind of the activities of some chiefs regarding the sale of land which he intervened for it to be reduced.

The Asantehene, who is bent on protecting the remaining lands given to OKESS, cautioned chiefs gathered at the event not to come anywhere close to the lands.

“What is painful is the sale of the land given to the school and spending of the money by some chiefs. They had already sold the land before I ascended the throne. The little that was left of the land, I was told chiefs are encroaching. I believe it has reduced. All chiefs present here, if you think your land is here, don’t come after the school lands,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II told the gathering in Twi.

Otumfuo to finance the construction of toilet facility for OKESS

The Asantehene further said he will finance the construction of a toilet facility for female students of the school. To this end, he has asked the board chairman to furnish him with the estimates for the project on which he intends to embark on.

Additionally, he asked the board and headmaster of the school to further bring estimates for ICT things the school needs.

“The board chairman told me the female students do not have a toilet facility. I will ensure that it is constructed for them. There are two ICT things and I have asked Dr. Opoku Adusei, the board and headmaster to bring the estimates so that they come for money for it. This is the beginning just to show that I have not forsaken the school,” Otumfuo said.

    About OKESS

Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School was the first second-cycle institution in the Ashanti region and was established in 1937 by the late J.T. Robert who was a Sierra Leonean. At the time, it was christened Asante Collegiate and was sited at Asafo, a suburb of Kumasi.

The Ministry of Education in September 1962, took over the administration of the school. However, the name, Asante Collegiate, was maintained. Subsequently, at the beginning of the 1968/69 academic year, the school was renamed after the late Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, known in private life as Barima Kwame Kyeretwie, in his honour.

Shortly after the renaming ceremony, the school was relocated to a new site at Dichemso formerly occupied by Modern City Academy. Afterwards, the school population increased significantly. As a result, His Royal Majesty Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, by his kindness, acquired a new site at Old Tafo, Kumasi.

A committee was set up through the Lands Commission to demarcate the site in 1970. Nine years afterwards, the school started operating the two sites which was a very daunting task. Running the school became very expensive besides the risk of transporting students to and fro the two sites daily. The school eventually moved to the new site at Old Tafo, Kumasi in the 2004/05 academic year.

As a result of the gradual encroachment of the land, in 1998, the President, (late) Flt. LT. Jerry John Rawlings, by an Executive Instrument, compulsorily acquired the land which was 168.28 acreage.

  • FOSDA commends Otumfuo’s move to resolve Bawku conflict

The Foundation for Security Development in Africa (FOSDA) has commended the move by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to help resolve the protracted Bawku conflict between the Mamprusis and the Kusasis in the Upper East region.

According to FOSDA, the move by the Asantehene is refreshing and laudable, especially considering the current wave of violence across the West African Sub-region.

“FOSDA has been advocating the establishment of a committee of Eminent Chiefs to mediate the protracted Bawku conflict, learning from the success of the Dagbon case which was led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. We believe that such a move is very likely to bring the much-needed peace to the people of Bawku given the failure of the judicial system to settle the issues.

“The Bawku conflict has pre-dated Ghana’s struggle for independence and has been intertwined with issues of politics, ethnicity, land and chieftaincy for more than 65 years. In 2021, there was a renewed clash among the parties in an attempt by the Mamprusis to observe the final funeral rite of the late Tampuri Alhaji Adams Zangbeogo which led to loss of innocent lives and property,” the Executive Director for FOSDA, Theodora W. Anit explained in a statement.

She continued: “Besides, it is significant to note that several bodies have attempted to resolve the matter including government commissions, Traditional Authorities, Civil Society Organization (CSOs) and the Supreme Court Ruling of April 2003 still remains the most remarkable attempt to bring finality to the conflict.”

Mrs. Anti further said various researches have proven that conflict prone areas are fertile grounds for violent extremist and terrorist attack.

“The geographical location of Bawku as a border town to Burkina Faso in the North of Ghana makes the current situation in Bawku very worrying and risky for the whole country.

“FOSDA commends Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for taking up this herculean task to find lasting peace for the people of Bawku, to save lives and bring about sustainable development.

“FOSDA calls for the support of the Government and citizens to support this initiative and urges all interested parties to approach the mediation process in utmost good faith with the hope of coming out with an amicable resolution.”

  • ‘Who is in control from district to national level?’ – Otumfuo laments galamsey ‘albatross’

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is urging a coordinated effort to eradicate unlawful small-scale mining, or “galamsey,” which he has described as an albatross around the nation’s neck.

The Asantehene bemoaned the negative effects of the illegal operation on several facets of personal and societal life while giving the American ambassador a private audience at the Manhyia Palace.

Asantehene further questioned why the taskforce established by the government and the security apparatus in these “galamsey” districts had not been able to end the menace in a video aired by Opemsuo Radio and seen by GhanaWeb.

“Galamsey is an albatross on our necks, it is rather unfortunate that it has happened this way. Ghana was known as the Gold Coast and therefore it was known. But during that time, it wasn’t like the galamsey that we are talking about,” he stated.

He explained that the small-scale mining of decades back was the menial ones, stressing that in contemporary times, the unfortunate use of equipment and carelessness of environmental implication has become a headache. “But who is control from district to national level,” he quizzed.

He continued: “The government set up the military cum police to do it, why have we not been able to stop it. Why? That is the point, why have we not been able to stop it?” he emphasized.

He intimated that small-scale mining was something that had been done for serval years but never to the detriment of the environment.

Wontumi’s company embroiled in ‘galamsey’ war

Meanwhile, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has directed the Forestry Commission to cease the operations of Akonta Mining Company in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve of the Amenfi West Municipal Assembly.

According to a statement issued by the Public Affairs of the Ministry on Friday, September 30, 2022, the Company owned by the ruling NPP Chairman for Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Wontumi, has been engaging in mining activities in the forest without a permit.

“The attention of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has been drawn to publications about certain operations by Akonta Mining Limited in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Amenfi West Municipality in the Western Region.

“Records available to the Ministry shows that while Akonta Mining Ltd has a mining lease to undertake mining operations in some parts of Samreboi, outside the Forest Reserve, the company has no mineral right to undertake any mining operations in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve,” the statement said.

According to the Ministry, while Akonta Mining Company had applied for a permit to mine in the said forest reserve, the Minister had yet to give approval to any such application hence rendering the activities of the firm in the said forest reserve illegal.

  • Afenyo-Markin reveals how he was initiated into Freemason

Ghana and the rest of the world are both home to numerous secret societies.
These organizations, commonly referred to as the brotherhood, meet in private and the general public is unaware of little to nothing about them.

This is because society as a whole considers their information to be confidential. The Freemasons are one of Ghana’s most well-known secret society organizations.

Former president John Agyekum Kufuor, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Ghanaian historian Henry Martey Newman, professor Christopher Ameyaw-Ekumfi, and Effutu MP Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin are among the most well-known personalities in the nation who are Freemasons.

Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has disclosed how he was initiated into the brotherhood; Freemason – years after his identity with this group took many Ghanaians by surprise.

He noted that a former national chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), the late Harona Esseku was the one who led him to join the freemason.

The Effutu MP added that Harona Esseku ensured that he rose through the ranks to hold a good position in the brotherhood.

Disclosing this in a tribute to the late Harona Esseku on Saturday, October 1, 2022, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin said, “He [Esseku] taught me the fine details of being a politician with an enviable code. He also showed me the doors to masonry and led my young hands into its hallowed chambers.”

“Indeed, he laboured day and night to teach me that all squares and perpendiculars are perfect points to know a brother. He did not end there. He ensured that I immersed myself in the brotherhood and rose quickly through the ranks, on merit, to take a seat in the “East,” he added.

Harona Esseku died on August 3, 2022, at age 88.
