Ghana Card applicants in Ashanti Region left stranded due to ongoing NIA strike

The ongoing strike staged by National Identification Authority (NIA) staff has caused significant inconvenience to numerous applicants in the Ashanti Region, depriving them of vital services.

Commencing on Monday, June 10, 2024, the strike was formally declared by the Public Services Workers Union on Sunday.

The reasons cited include dissatisfaction with working conditions and the government’s prolonged delay in addressing negotiation issues and specific allowances for the institution.

Despite a prior postponement of a strike notice in March 2024, facilitated by the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, the lack of progress in negotiations has compelled the union to take industrial action.

Consequently, all NIA facilities, spanning district, regional, and premium centers, have suspended operations, leaving applicants stranded and frustrated.

Many individuals, having traveled from distant locations, urgently require the Ghana card but are unable to obtain it due to the strike.

In media interviews, affected applicants have voiced their distress, emphasizing the critical importance of the Ghana card for various purposes and expressing concern over the severe disruption caused by the strike.

Applicants are now urging swift action from the government and relevant authorities to address the NIA’s grievances. They fear that prolonged strike action will exacerbate the situation and have detrimental effects if not resolved promptly.

Contracts of some stalled road projects in Ashanti Region to be terminated

Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah has announced that the government plans to terminate several road contracts in the Ashanti region due to delays.

The government has also reaffirmed its strong commitment to completing key roads connecting farming communities in the Ashanti region to the regional capital, Kumasi, and other regions.

Simon Osei-Mensah highlighted that the poor road network within the Asante Akim South Municipality is adversely affecting residents in and around the municipality.

He noted that the 12km road between Komeaboye and Kokoben and the 8km road project between Obogu and Kumeso will be terminated and reassigned to a different contractor for completion due to the delays.

“Some of the roads were awarded to three contractors. Unfortunately, the contractors at the beginning and the end have completed their projects and those within the middle parts have not completed. One of them [the roads] is about eight kilometres and the other is about 12 kilometres which we think must be terminated and re-awarded, possibly to the contractor who constructed the other roads within the same vicinity.

“Again, there are some critical routes we need to also have a look at, and that is between Obogu and Kumeso, which is about 8.5 kilometres. That road is very critical because it links Asante South Municipal Assembly to the Eastern region, that is Birim North and this is a very critical road.”

The minister made these disclosures after inspecting several road construction projects, including the upgraded 7km Juaso through Nkwanta to Obogu road, the 10km Banka through Otuokwai to Kokoben road, and the Komeaboye to Saabo Junction road.

Lands Minister inspects progress work on Minerals C’ssion’s ultra-modern office in Ashanti regional

The nearly finished ultra-modern, multi-purpose office complex being erected by the Minerals Commission for its Ashanti Regional office is approaching completion.

Expectations are high that this impressive eight-story structure will be ready for commissioning by October 2024.

This assurance was provided by the Project Consultant, Mr. Osei Tutu, during a site visit by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, MP, to inspect the progress of the project.

On Monday, May 27, 2024, the Lands Minister conducted an inspection tour of the facility to assess the progress of the work on the office complex.

Once finished, it will serve as the central hub for the Minerals Commission’s regulatory and oversight activities in the Ashanti Region and the middle belt of the country.

Speaking to the press after his tour, Samuel A. Jinapor emphasized the significance of having a fully operational and well-staffed Minerals Commission office to carry out regulatory duties, not only in the Ashanti Region but also across the entire middle belt, including the Western North and Central Regions.

The Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to decentralizing the Minerals Commission, with the construction of the cutting-edge Ashanti Regional Minerals Commission office serving as evidence of this dedication to developing the mining sector.

“I have to commend the CEO of the Minerals Commission, the consultants, the contractors, and everyone who has worked so diligently to ensure that we put up this extraordinary office for the Ashanti Regional Minerals Commission. If we are going to come to grips with mining, particularly large-scale mining, which contributes significantly to the national economy, as well as small-scale mining, then the Minerals Commission must have the requisite structure, personnel, and operational capacity to regulate the mining sector. This government has taken the initiative to ensure that the regulation of mining activities is decentralized, and we are on course”, he said.

“This is a major investment by the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I have been told that it is going to be the tallest building in Kumasi. It will be a place where we can conduct rigorous investigations of the mining sector and the products of the mining sector in the country”, he added.

“The contractors have given us the assurance that it will be handed over to the government by the end of September, and I’m going to hold them to it. I will be knocking on the doors of Manhyia to seek the concurrence of His Royal Majesty Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, to commission this project in the first week of October,” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Mr. Martin Kwaku Ayisi, disclosed that the project was initially estimated to cost GH₵80 million and that the commission already has plans to let out some offices in the edifice to generate revenue.

Mr. Martin Ayisi also elaborated on the maintenance plan crafted by the commission, assuring that the facility will bring in significant benefits for the commission.

Mr. Osei Tutu, the consultant, expressed confidence that the project, which is 71% complete, will be ready by the end of September 2024.

Breaking down the completion rate, Mr. Osei Tutu said, “Preliminaries are at 60%, the soft structure for the main building is 100%, the ground floor for the main building is at 63%, but the overall progress of work for the seven-story is at 63%. We have the laboratory and main block. The laboratory and main block are about 71% complete, so cumulatively, we are about 71%.”

Since 2021 the Minerals Commission has embarked on a massive infrastructural development drive nationwide, which has seen a number of edifice being constructed across ten (10) mining regions as part of decentralization drive to bring the services of the commission to the door step of all Stakeholders and also help in governments quest to among others streamline the operations of the mining sector.

Martin Kwaku Ayisi, revealed that the project was originally projected to cost GH₵80 million, with plans in place to lease some of the offices in the building to generate revenue.

Mr. Ayisi also detailed the commission’s maintenance strategy, emphasizing the substantial advantages the facility will offer.

Project consultant Mr. Osei Tutu expressed optimism that the construction, currently 71% complete, will be finished by the end of September 2024.

Since 2021, the Minerals Commission has launched an extensive infrastructure development initiative across the country. This effort has resulted in the construction of several buildings in ten mining regions as part of a decentralization strategy to make the commission’s services more accessible to stakeholders. Additionally, this initiative supports the government’s objective to streamline operations within the mining sector.

Artisans at Suame Magazine in the Ashanti Region petition Otumfuo, Bawumia over eviction threats

Thousands of artisans at Suame Magazine Zone 13 in the Ashanti Region are on the brink of eviction due to claims by a private developer, ‘The Gosie Group’, asserting ownership of parts of the industrial hub.

The artisans, with decades-long operations in the area, are urgently appealing to Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia for intervention to halt their potential displacement.

Their occupation of the land is safeguarded by Executive Instrument (E.I. 36), necessitating a parliamentary amendment for any eviction, yet a recent court ruling in favor of the Gosie Group has escalated tensions in the enclave.

Having established their businesses since 1989, the artisans fear the jeopardy of their entire livelihoods if forced to vacate.

“I plead with Nana Addo and Bawumia to honour their promises. They pledged to support us, but they have forgotten about the promises they made to us. For us, the illiterate, they don’t regard us anymore. They should provide us with employment opportunities and put a stop to the digitalisation conversation because it does not include us. If Bawumia wants to win the 2024 elections, he must help us, or we vote against him,” said one artisan.

Chairman of Suame Magazine Zone 13, Eric Arhin emphasized the need for authorities, including the Asantehene and VP Bawumia, to prevent what could spiral into a humanitarian and economic crisis.

“We are urging the authorities to intervene so we can continue our work.”

New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Kwabena Nsenkyire and spare parts dealer, has visited to assuage tensions, pledging governmental efforts toward resolution but stressing the necessity of VP Bawumia’s direct engagement with the affected artisans.

Police arrest 3 individuals for causing confusion at Tepa in the Ashanti Region

A scuffle broke out during the limited voter registration at the Tepa Electoral Commission office in the Ashanti Region leading to the arrest of three individuals.

The Ghana Police Service swiftly restored calm, allowing the registration process to resume smoothly.

The suspects Abass Abukari, George Vinor, and Abdul Karim are now assisting in the ongoing police investigation.

The nationwide limited voter registration, initiated by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) ahead of the 2024 general elections, targets first-time voters and those seeking voter cards.

Chairperson Jean Mensa stated the goal is to register approximately 623,000 first-time voters countrywide.

“The registration will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. And that gives us the figure of 623,000 that we have put there. That is not to say that we cannot go beyond that. We did mention that in 2023, we projected 700,000 people to visit our registration centers.”

To mitigate challenges like power outages, the EC has equipped all district offices with rented generators, ensuring uninterrupted registration services.

“We are trying hard to make arrangements to ensure that we don’t face challenges because of ‘dumsor.’ What we’ve done is to have all our district offices rent generators so that in the event where there’s ‘dumsor,’ they can kick in. However, should there be the unexpected, we would switch to offline mode, meaning voters will be registered manually, and their details will be stored on a pen drive. This data will be copied in our offices when the power returns, so the registration will not be disrupted.”

The 21-day registration period will run until May 27, 2024.

Ashanti Regional Security Council to capture stray cattle from owners to save new trees

The Ashanti Regional Security Council has issued a warning, stating its intention to start taking custody of stray cattle left unconfined by their owners.

The council raised concerns about the ongoing destruction of trees planted along streets and other areas in parts of the region by stray animals.

In various parts of the Ashanti Region, stray animals are often left to roam freely, causing damage to both public and private properties. Additionally, these animals sometimes contribute to vehicular traffic, creating a public nuisance.

Chairing the Security Council, Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah emphasized that action will be taken against the owners of these stray animals.

“We have tried to regreen Kumasi to bring back the garden city that we all knew, unfortunately, we are disturbed by cattle. Almost all the trees we planted in 2023 have been destroyed.

“This time we are going to take stringent action against the owners of the cattle. We’re going to engage people who are good at catching stray cattle, we will pay them within that period, and they will ensure that the trees are not destroyed by cattle.”

A/R: Kumasi traders threatens to stage a 5-day protest over abandoned market

Several trader associations in Kumasi have pledged to oppose the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 general election “should the government fail to complete all abandoned markets in the Ashanti Region.”

These associations, including the Second-hand Cloth Sellers Association, Santasi Traders Union, Suame Magazine Workers Union, Mamponteng Traders Association, Central Market Traders Association, and the Kumasi Lotto Sellers Association, jointly issued a statement on Monday, May 6, warning of a five-day protest in collaboration with other disgruntled associations if their demands are not met.

In the meantime, the associations have also appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and Ashanti Queen Mother, Nana Konadu Yiadom, to intervene and urge the government to address their grievances.

The disgruntled traders also cautioned that the barriers on the Kejetia Second Phase project must be removed before they resort to taking action themselves.

“We are by this press release urging the Contracta company to remove all the barricades from the Kejetia second phase projects before we do it by ourselves because we will not think twice to take it off to do our businesses there if our demand is not heard.”

Below is the full press release.

PRESS RELEASE BY ALL TRADERS GROUPS IN THE ASHANTI REGION IN COLLABORATION WITH THE GREAT ASANTE MAN YOUTH UNION.

    6th May, 2024

Good morning esteemed members of the media,

We, the entirety of traders in the Kumasi and its environs, including the Second-hand Cloth Sellers Association, Santasi Traders Union, Suame Magazine Workers Union, Mamponteng Traders Association, Central Market Traders Association, Kumasi Lotto Sellers Association, have jointly decided to initiate a campaign against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 general election if the government fails to complete all the abandoned markets in the Ashanti Region, including the much-awaited Phase Two of the Kejetia Market.

Over the past one year, six months, progress on these projects has come to a halt due to the renegotiation of a loan agreement following the country’s decision to opt for a financial bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) while other markets including Mamponteng market, Krofrom market and Santasi market has been abandoned since former President Kufuor era.

Presently, we have four major markets left abandoned by the NPP government:

    1. Krofrom Market
    2. Mamponteng Market
    3. Santasi Market
    4. Phase Two of the Kejetia Market.

We, the aforementioned traders’ unions within the Ashanti Region, have continuously voiced our concerns regarding the challenges we face in conducting business at our current locations.

The government’s failure to meet completion targets has left us disheartened and frustrated. We fail to comprehend why a project would be initiated only to be abandoned, leaving our fellow traders to sell their goods in unsuitable conditions.

Our livelihoods are greatly affected by adverse weather conditions; each rainfall turns our marketplaces into muddy quagmires, while the scorching sun blankets the area in dust, making it difficult for us to operate effectively.

The Ashanti Region, a stronghold of the NPP, rightfully expects swift development, especially in Kumasi. However, the lack of progress on these crucial projects has left us deeply disappointed.

We, the aforementioned traders’ union, earnestly appeal to His Majesty, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, once more to intervene on our behalf.

We humbly implore Asantehene to lend his support and influence towards the restoration and completion of all abandoned markets in the region.

Furthermore, we extend our plea to the Ashanti Queen Mother, Nana Konadu Yiadom, who holds jurisdiction over all markets in the Ashanti Kingdom.

We believe that her background as a former trader will foster a deeper understanding of our plight and inspire her to champion our cause.

If our demand did not yield any result, we the aforementioned traders together with Asanteman Youth Union will joined the five days demonstration by our brothers and sisters of Central Market and second hand cloth sellers to demonstrate against the government.

We on this press release urging the contracta company to remove all the barricades from the Kejetia second phase projects before we do it by ourselves because we will not think twice to take it off to do our businesses there if our demand did not heard.

    Thank you, Asanteman.
    Thank you, Ghana.

Together, let us strive for a better future for all traders and citizens alike.

    Call for Resolution

Residents are urging the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene and resolve the chieftaincy issue at Daa to prevent further conflict.

Speaking to OTEC news, a resident said the town Daa, of which the Adankrangya Manhene is claiming ownership, is under the biggest oath of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the King of the Ashanti Kingdom.

NPP must address voter apathy in Ashanti region – Mussa Dankwa

The Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwa, has highlighted the prevalent issue of voter apathy in the Ashanti region, known as the stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He pointed out that this was evident during the recent by-election held in the Ejisu constituency within the Ashanti Region. In light of this observation, he urged the NPP to take proactive measures to address this concern.

“NPP must find a way to motivate voters to come out and vote…Apathy is real in the Ashanti region,” Mussa Dankwa said on the Ghana Tonight show on Tuesday, April 30.

In the by-election, the NPP candidate emerged victorious after overcoming competition from five other candidates. According to them, they can’t go and vote on an empty stomach, therefore, they will rally behind whichever candidate that will give them 200 or 500 Ghana cedis.

The Electoral Commission (EC)  officially approved six candidates to participate in the ongoing Ejisu by-election.

This by-election, aims to elect a new parliamentary representative for the Ejisu Constituency following the demise of the incumbent, John Kumah, who also served as the deputy finance minister.

Kwabena Boateng, representing the NPP, has secured the second position on the ballot and emerges as one of the leading candidates.

Former MP Ing. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, standing as an independent candidate, occupies the fourth spot, with Beatrice Boakye of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) listed third.

Esther Osei represents the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and holds the first position on the ballot. Gabriel Agyemang Joseph and Joseph Attakora, both running as independent candidates, occupy the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.

It’s noteworthy that the largest opposition party, the NDC, has opted not to nominate a candidate for the by-election.

Anticipations suggest that Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, a former three-term NPP member of Parliament running as an independent candidate, could pose a significant challenge to his former party.

Additionally, there are murmurs of discontent among some constituents, who express grievances over neglected promises and unmet needs, with sentiments of hunger and dissatisfaction looming over the electoral process.

  • 58% of voters in Ashanti region believe Ghana’s economy is not heading right direction – Report

58% of voters in Ashanti region believe Ghana’s economy is not heading right direction – Report

As per the April 2024 Global Info Analytics National Polling report, a notable majority of voters in the Ashanti region, totaling 58 percent, continue to express skepticism about the nation’s trajectory.

Conversely, 37 percent of respondents in the region express confidence in the economy’s current direction, while a minimal five percent refrained from offering an opinion.

On a broader scale, the sentiment regarding the economy appears to be evenly split across Ghana, with 65 percent of voters expressing dissatisfaction with the current course.

In contrast, 25 percent of respondents believe the country is on the right path. Meanwhile, ten percent of voters remained neutral, withholding their opinion on the matter.

Comparing these results to those of April 2023, a discernible shift is evident. The dissatisfaction rate of 65 percent reflects a decrease of six percentage points from the previous year.

Conversely, the satisfaction rate of 25 percent marks a notable increase of six percentage points from April 2023.

Notably, the percentage of voters refraining from expressing an opinion remained constant at 10 percent over the past year.

These findings underscore the prevailing concerns among Ghanaian voters regarding the nation’s direction, particularly concerning economic matters.

Such insights into evolving public perceptions may influence political discourse and policymaking in the foreseeable future.

  • Bees kill woman in Ashanti Region on Good Friday

Bees kill woman in Ashanti Region on Good Friday

An elderly woman’s routine visit to church on Good Friday took a tragic turn when she was fatally attacked by a swarm of angry bees.

The incident occurred at a local Catholic Church in Owuoso, situated in the Sekyere South District of the Ashanti Region, as congregants gathered for service.

Witnesses reported that the bees launched their assault as worshippers exited the church onto the main road to conclude the day’s events.

The sudden attack prompted chaos as congregants scrambled for safety, enduring multiple stings from the enraged insects.

Assemblyman Akwasi Tawia, representing the Owuoso Electoral Area, recounted the harrowing ordeal to Asaase News, highlighting that even non-members were not spared from the attack.

“What happened is a sad one. We haven’t seen such a thing before. We still can’t ascertain the source of the swarm of bees. We were told they were praying in church when they were attacked by the swarm of bees. Even a teacher and her Canadian guest were also attacked. Most of them, including the Reverend Father had to take cover”.

“The elderly woman suffered severe injury and so she was rescued and rushed to the Agona Government Hospital, but died moments later. Those who survived with minor injuries were being treated at the same hospital, even most of them have been discharged”.

The cause of the bee attack remains unclear, prompting traditional authorities to initiate rituals aimed at averting potential calamities that could afflict the town.

A bee sting occurs when the stinger of a female bee pierces the skin, resulting in pain and a wound. Unlike insect bites, bee stings can vary in severity due to the chemical composition of the venom.

Individual reactions to bee stings may differ depending on the species of bee involved. While most people experience mild pain from bee venom, the severity of the reaction can vary.

One common home remedy for alleviating bee sting discomfort is to apply wet aspirin or aspirin paste to the affected area.

Over 50 projects in Ashanti Region completed by NPP – Simon Osei-Mensah slams critics

In response to a circulating video on social media suggesting he struggled to list developmental projects undertaken by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti region, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, has denied the accusations, dismissing them as mere propaganda.

Minister Osei-Mensah clarified the context, explaining that he was fully capable of listing numerous developmental initiatives but was misunderstood during the conversation.

He emphasized that he had conveyed his ability to easily mention around fifty such projects if necessary and even invited the host to provide specific details for him to enumerate.

“I went to a program at Oyerepa FM, and the host asked me questions to mention some of the projects, and after mentioning about 5.

“I wanted to mention the judicial accommodations so I realized I had that footage on my phone inside my pocket …so he told me that I have been accusing the NDC about some of these development projects so I should provide evidence myself and I told him that I could mention 50.

“He should produce the full tape.

“I could provide 50. and I told him the judicial accommodations are closer to my office. That is just mere propaganda, they should bring the full tape.

“I have always been mentioning about 30 projects every time I am called,” he said in an interview on Okay FM on March 27, 2024.

Minister Osei Mensah reiterated his willingness to present a comprehensive list of developmental projects if given the opportunity, stressing that he consistently highlights approximately thirty projects whenever called upon.

Akufo-Addo’s Minister fails to name 5 projects in Ashanti Region executed by current NPP gov’t

During a live TV interview on Oyerepa TV on Monday, March 25, 2024, Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah was left momentarily speechless when asked about the projects undertaken by his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the region.

Prior to this moment, Osei-Mensah had issued a challenge to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to present ten legacy projects they had implemented in the Ashanti Region.

“They should give me 10 signature projects or legacy projects that they commissioned in the 8-year period they were in power, in the Ashanti Region,” he dared.

However, when posed with a similar question about his own party’s projects, he struggled to provide a comprehensive response, highlighting a lack of readily available information.

While Mr Osei-Mensah initially mentioned four projects, he appeared to struggle to provide further details or additional examples, eventually falling silent and unable to continue speaking.

“We have completed the Zipline project which is at Mampong… go and look at Bosomtwe Girls… By the end of April, you will see that planes can land at the airport… baby and mother unit that Auntie Rebecca came to commission is also our project,” and then the minister went blank on live TV.

After a brief pause, the minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, informed the host, Kwesi Parker-Wilson, that he would gather the remaining details and share them later.

16-year-old girl allegedly steals baby during church service in Asante Akyem Agogo

Members of the Church of Pentecost in Asante Akyem Agogo, Ashanti region, were left stunned when a 16-year-old girl reportedly snatched a baby during a church service.

The accused, Emelia Yendulom, allegedly deceived the baby‘s grandmother by claiming the mother needed to breastfeed him.

The incident took place during a naming ceremony at the church on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

Emelia vanished with the baby, causing immense distress to the parents.

It was later discovered that she had taken the child to her family’s residence in Agogo Zongo, pretending to be the mother.

Suspicions arose due to Emelia’s history of mental health issues and ongoing treatment at a prayer camp in Ananekrom.

Concerned family members verified the situation with the prayer camp and realized Emelia’s deception. They promptly took her and the baby to the police, resulting in her arrest.

The mother, who had already reported the incident to the police, confirmed the child’s identity.

While the police acknowledge Emelia’s pattern of baby theft, her mental health condition complicates potential legal action.

Currently, both the suspect and the baby’s grandmother are cooperating with the police investigation.

Majority caucus has not made any changes to its leadership – First Deputy Speaker

Member of Parliament for Bekwai in the Ashanti Region and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Osei Owusu, has stated that the Majority caucus in Parliament has no intentions of altering their leadership.

He urged the public to disregard any media claims suggesting changes in the leadership of the New Patriotic Party majority caucus in Parliament.

Reports indicating a potential replacement of Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, with his Deputy, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, have surfaced.

In response, Osei Owusu dismissed these reports as false and advised treating such publications with skepticism.

  • Kumasi experiencing power and water crisis

Kumasi experiencing power and water crisis

Business operators and residents in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, are expressing frustration and outrage over persistent power outages plaguing the area.

The frequent disruptions in power supply in recent weeks have sparked discontent in the Ashanti Regional capital, raising concerns about the reliability of electricity services in the region.

Areas like Asokwa, Oforikrom, Bosomtwe, and other parts of Greater Kumasi are particularly hard-hit. Complaints include damage to electrical appliances and a negative impact on productivity.

When Asaase News visited TI AMASS Senior High School in Asokwa on Thursday morning, the lack of electricity at water pumping plants forced students to search for water. 15-year-old Pokuaa Nyamekye expressed concern about maintaining good hygiene if the situation persists.

“For someone like me if I have my period and I don’t take my bath I can’t go to the classroom. Some of us have to skip dawn lessons to search for water and this has affected normal life on campus. We humbly pray that this is resolved very soon otherwise things will get worse in the coming days.”

“It started over the weekend and today around 1 am some of us had to hunt for water again”, said another student. “We have come to the court premises for some help. Some are even bathing at the [Kumasi] mall. This is terrible”.

The Ghana National Fire Service, observing the situation, fears more fire outbreaks could occur if nothing is done to address the power outages. DO3 Peter Adai, the Ashanti Regional Spokesperson for the Service, emphasized the importance of safety precautions during power fluctuations.

Efforts to obtain comments from officials at the Electricity Company of Ghana have yielded little results as of the time of this report. However, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) asserts that it is closely monitoring the situation.

The regulator assures that water will be restored by the close of Thursday, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Richard Asiedu, the Ashanti regional spokesperson at the PURC, explained, “Since last Saturday, we realized that most residents in parts of the Greater Kumasi areas have been experiencing water shortage. We reached out to the ECG, and they informed us that they had a cable blast around one of their substations, so they were trying to fix the situation. The situation has affected water supply as the Ghana Water Company also relies heavily on power supply during their operations.”

There is a strong push for an alternative arrangement to avoid disruptions in power distribution in Kumasi, as residents maintain that the situation is taking a toll on their livelihoods.

  • Don’t think of voting for NDC, they ignore you when in power – Asenso-Boakye to Ashanti Region electorates

Don’t think of voting for NDC, they ignore you when in power – Asenso-Boakye to Ashanti Region electorates

Member of Parliament for the Bantama Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has strongly criticized political figures in the Ashanti region, particularly in the Bantama constituency, who align themselves with the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He expressed his disapproval, stating that supporters who choose to vote for the NDC are making misguided decisions, emphasizing that the NDC has not brought any tangible benefits to the Ashanti region, specifically in Bantama.

During his address to the constituency’s residents, the Minister for Works and Housing conveyed his confusion about the continued support for the NDC and questioned the rationale behind people persistently voting for the party.

“Truly, people of Bantama and Kumasi in general don’t see any development when the NDC is in power so if someone is here and the person votes for the NDC, I don’t understand them. They know that when NDC is in power they don’t recognize the Ashanti region. During former president John Dramani Mahama’s 4 years in power we didn’t see anything here,” Asenso Boakye stated.

Additionally, the Minister urged the residents of Bantama and the entire Ashanti Region to actively participate in the electoral process by casting their votes overwhelmingly in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the upcoming general elections.

He emphasized that, in his view, the NDC is not a viable option for fostering development in the region, reinforcing the importance of supporting the NPP for continued progress.

“If you want development in the Ashanti region and Bantama to be precise don’t look down on NPP because NDC is not an option. So I will urge you to settle all your differences and come out in your numbers to vote in this year’s general elections,” he entreated.

In the recent New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries leading up to the December 7 polls, Francis Asenso Boakye successfully retained his position as the party’s candidate for the Bantama Constituency.

Mr. Asenso Boakye secured a significant victory, receiving 650 votes, which accounted for 78.22% of the total votes cast. His primary opponent, Lawyer Raphael Agyapong, the brother of outspoken politician Kennedy Agyapong, garnered 181 votes, constituting 21.78% of the overall vote count.

Expressing his gratitude, the re-elected Member of Parliament thanked party executives for their unwavering support and trust. He urged party members to come together, emphasizing the importance of unity and hard work in ensuring success in the upcoming general elections.

Chief priest of Antoa refuses to lift curses placed by Wontumi on Kokoso chief – Report

The Chief Priest of the Antoa Nyamaa ‘deity,’ tasked with reversing the curses placed on Nana Kwaku Duah, Chief of Kokoso, by Bernard Antwi Boasiko (Chairman Wontumi), the Ashanti regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has refused to perform the necessary rituals.

This comes after Chairman Wontumi denied the allegations made against him by Nana Kwaku Duah regarding disparaging comments about Asantehene Otumfuo Osei II.

Wontumi’s denial, presented to the Antoa shrine dispute resolution Chiefs, created an impression of resolution by the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC), which Nana Kwaku Duah and the Chief Priest found unsatisfactory.

Otumfuo’s Brempong, Nana Kwaku Duah, maintained that Wontumi had made the disparaging statement before about 40 people in the vetting room.

The Antoa Nyamaa Chief Priest, expressing discomfort with the handling of the case by the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC), refused to reverse the curse, citing a lack of full disclosure of the truth during the unsatisfactory resolution at Manhyia Palace on January 29, 2024.

The Chief Priest directed the delegation to go back and resolve the case again, urging the guilty party to confess for forgiveness.

Following the Chief Priest’s decision, some individuals in the delegation knelt to beg Nana Kwaku Duah to allow the Chief Priest to reverse the curses. However, he objected, insisting that the entire truth must be revealed to vindicate his initial stance on the matter.

The delegation included Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Nana Nkansah Boadu (Agric Nzemahene), Nana Kwaku Duah (Chief of Kokoso), and Baffour Kantankrakyi (Otumfuo’s linguist).

  • Wontumi reveals question he was ‘forced’ to ask NAPO during vetting

Wontumi reveals question he was ‘forced’ to ask NAPO during vetting

The Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Bosiako Antwi, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has revealed what happened during the vetting of candidates for the party’s parliamentary primaries.

According to Chairman Wontumi, he was a part of the panelists who had to take the aspiring Member of Parliament (MPs) through the vetting process.

He disclosed that during the process, he was reluctant to interrogate the Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO because he had no questions to ask at that time.

“ I am a servant of NPP, the other day we were given an opportunity to interact with individuals who were coming for vetting. I had a lot of interaction with a lot until it got to the turn of NAPO. I told him I have no questions to ask him but the committee chairman, Nana B insisted I did,” he added.

Chairman Wontumi said he was compelled to engage NAPO after the National Organiser of the party, Henry Nana Boakye, (Nana B) who was also the chairman for the committee and the other panellists insisted he does.

He said that after throwing a question at NAPO, one of the panellists suggested they all bear witness to the good works of NAPO.

“I told him that I didn’t ask KT Hammond anything so I won’t do the same. NAPO sat close to 10 mins because I wasn’t willing to ask him anything so I eventually asked him. I asked him if the NPP wins in 2024 what should Ghana expect from the party. He said Ghana will experience development. I didn’t ask him anything again because there were otters waiting. Nana B later said we had to testify and they all praised him, but I said nothing. When NAPO was going Nana B and the others escorted him,” he stated.

Wontumi’s failure to recognize NAPO’s contributions to the party’s internal activities in the Ashanti region, according to him, got the Chief of Kokoso, Nana Kwaku Duah, furious who later came verbally attacking him  after NAPO had left the committee.

“Long after my organizer at Manhyia South came screaming and hitting the table saying if no one will speak I will. He asked me why I didn’t testify for NAPO. I told him to go because I don’t want to retaliate. I told him this is my kingdom, as soon as I said that he said Otumfuor is the only person that has a kingdom. I meant it was my political kingdom,” he explained.

In the heat of the argument,, Wontumi said he had to control the situation by telling Nana Kwaku Duah “NPP is his Kingdom in Ashanti Region and that at that vetting, the issues at stake were purely party issues.”

Wontumi revealed this when he appeared before the Kumasi Traditional Council for allegedly using derogatory remarks against the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Asanteman.

Nana Kwaku Duah had claimed that Chairman Wontumi displayed significant disrespect towards the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during the vetting process leading up to the NPP’s Parliamentary primaries.

In the meantime, Chairman Wontumi has been cleared of allegations of disrespecting the Ashanti stool.

Chief of Breman in the Ashanti Region, Baffuor Kotei Kutin Sraman, has reiterated his support for former President John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

In a issued on Friday, January 26, 2024, the traditional leader said he had been backing Mr Mahama since 2016, despite being criticized by some people.

He said he was confident that Mr Mahama could deliver development to the country, especially the Ashanti Region, which he claimed had benefited immensely from his previous administration.

“I said this in 2016. I was chastised. But because time changes, we are here again. Today is Friday the 26th of January 2024, today I am saying our prayers are behind his excellency John Dramani Mahama, so that God can help him reclaim his seat as president. I am not saying it for granted because I know what he can do. During his tenure, he changed the Ashanti Region. Talk of hospitals, schools, roads, he did a lot of things for our development. Ideally, when someone does a good thing, it has to be continued, but it looks like things are not exactly going well. So this is our plea, that God almighty will help so that this man can come back and lead this country into development,” he said.

Baffuor Kotei Kutin Sraman is one of the few chiefs in the Ashanti Region who have openly endorsed Mr Mahama, who is the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The region is considered a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has won the majority of the parliamentary seats and the presidential votes in every election since 1992.

However, Mr Mahama has been making efforts to woo the voters in the region, promising to complete all the abandoned projects initiated by his government, such as the Kejetia market, the Kumasi airport expansion, and the Kumasi ring road.

He has also highlighted some of his achievements in the region, such as the construction of hospitals, schools, water projects, and roads.

Mr Mahama is expected to face Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who is the presidential candidate of the NPP, in the 2024 election.

Meet the 5 NPP MPs in Ashanti Region who are exiting Parliament

Five incumbent Members of Parliament in the Ashanti Region have opted out of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries scheduled for January 27, 2024.

Notable figures such as the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Bekwai, Joseph Osei-Wusu, Majority Leader and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, and legislators for the Oforikrom, Ahafo Ano South East, and Kwabre East constituencies did not submit nominations for the primaries.

The Ashanti Region, known for having the highest number of NPP parliamentarians, will witness a substantial number of incumbents vying to retain their seats in the upcoming primaries.

Out of the 47 seats in the region, the NPP holds a majority, with 43 currently under their control. Notably, at the Old Tafo Constituency, there is a contest between Vincent Ekow Assafuah and Dr. Serwaa Donkor, with the latter aiming to become the first female Member of Parliament for the constituency.

Dr. Donkor, having come second in the 2020 primaries, is determined to secure victory this time and serve the people of Old Tafo and Pankrono.

“There are a myriad of problems the people here have. I understand development and leadership and I want to offer to the people of Tafo-Pankrono the leadership skills I have,” she emphasized.

Vincent Frimpong Manu, a three-time contender in NPP parliamentary elections, is vying for the Kwadaso seat in a competitive race against the incumbent MP, Kingsley Nyarko.

“If the incumbent MP had served well, I wouldn’t be contesting him. Many people come here to contest but they’re not true indigenes of Kwadaso. We need a true resident born and bred here to bring us that change the people need. I am the person,” he said.

The Bantama constituency is set for a challenging contest between the incumbent MP, Francis Asenso Boakye, and Raphael Agyapong.

“The people have seen the works I have done in the constituency and they will vote based on that. The person contesting me is no match at all,” Francis Asenso teased.

“I understand people say this will be a real contest between President Akufo-Addo and Kennedy Agyapong. But I know that, at the end of the day I will be crowned the winner,” Raphael Agyapong said.

In the Kwabre East Constituency, five aspirants are vying for the seat following the decision of the incumbent MP, Francisca Oteng Mensah, to withdraw from the race.

Patrick Amoako Kufour expresses optimism about securing victory, facing strong competition from the former organizer and the Municipal Chief Executive of the constituency.

While filing nominations is the initial step, the aspirants must now focus on winning the trust and support of the delegates to secure their parliamentary candidature on January 27, 2024.
