  • Galamsey: 12 excavators seized; one arrested in Ashanti region

More arrests in relation to illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, have recently been carried out across the country, in efforts to clamp down on the canker.

About two weeks ago, 164 arrests were made in Anyinam and Mampong in a three-day operation by the Operation Halt task force.

In a related development, one more person has been arrested, and 12 excavators have been seized by the soldiers under the second phase of Operation Halt.

The latest arrest was carried out after members of the task force stormed mining sites within the Atwima Mponua and Amansie South districts of the Ashanti region.

One car and a motorbike were also impounded at some mining sites during the operation. The activities of illegal miners have become rife in the country despite laws and measures instituted to clamp down on their activities.

The activities of these illegal miners have immensely destroyed water bodies such as the River Pra, Offin, and Birim; land resources have also been spared.

According to recent statistics from the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), over 19,000 hectares of cocoa farmland have been destroyed as a result of the activities of illegal miners. With the current happenings, a section of the public has come to the conclusion that the galamsey fight is a lost cause.

Meanwhile, the government has vehemently contested this claim, insisting that it will not relent on clamping down on illegal miners and their activities.
Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has, on many occasions, re-echoed the government’s commitment to
    battling malaria in the country.

In addition to the Operation Halt task force introduced to check the canker, the government also launched a small-scale mining awards programme, which seeks to promote and encourage responsible small-scale mining last year.

Speaking at the launch of this year’s award programme, Mr. HIV: Don’t be scared, get checked – GHANET assures Jinapor noted that the government remains unwavering in its efforts to sanitise and regulate the small-scale mining sector, which provides an estimated 40 percent of Ghana’s total gold output.

“The government is very mindful of the consequential and important nature of the small-scale mining sector of our country,” he noted, although he acknowledged that there are pertinent challenges that need to be addressed.

He further mentioned that the government has introduced several reformative measures, including the start of the community mining scheme, the introduction of mercury-free mining equipment, and the alternative livelihoods
    programme.

  • 505 Artisans in Ashanti Region acquire NVTI certification

Five hundred and five artisans from the Ashanti Region have taken part in the National Vocational Training Institute’s (NVTI) skilled proficiency examination with support from the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) through its foundation.

The exams formed part of activities under the Skilled Artisans Project (SAP) aimed at equipping artisans with competency based certification.

The beneficiaries were drawn from Offinso, Bekwai, Mampong and Kumasi and were tested in two modules: domestic and technical.

The domestic modules included cookery, bakery, dressmaking, tailoring, hairdressing, interior decoration and make-up artistry, while the technical modules comprised plumbing, carpentry, auto-mechanics, general electrical and aluminium fabrication.

    Objective

Addressing the media after inspecting the candidates at the various centres in the region, the Executive Director of the GNPC Foundation, Dr Dominic Eduah, said the objective of the project was to empower the youth with employable skills and also set them up to become masters and employers.

He said over the years, the focus had been on those in the formal sector to the detriment of those in the informal sector.

He said due to that, the SAP was introduced two years ago to also add those in the informal sector to help them acquire certification for their areas of trade.

“The process is very simple; we want to move them from an informal sector to a semi-formal sector. That is, they also get the opportunity to be certified and acquire soft skills in book keeping and investment,” he said.

He explained that the SAP was a livelihood empowerment programme designed to support the youth across the country with the much needed technical and vocational skills that could match up with the best standards anywhere.

Dr Eduah said the NVTI certification phase of the project was necessitated by the need to boost their employability and credibility as trained artisans.

Dr Eduah said Ashanti Region was the fifth region to benefit from the project after the initial ones for Western and Western North, Central, Eastern and Greater Accra.

He stated that this year, the foundation was sponsoring a total of 2,050 artisans including 505 from the Ashanti Region.

    Target

He said the foundation targeted those who had already learnt the skills but didn’t have what it took to set themselves up.

“We are offering young people, who are inspired to learn these important trade skills, the requisite tools and equipment needed to start their own entrepreneurial businesses, in a bid to make them economically independent to support themselves and their families,” he said.

Ghanaian actor Kwadwo Nkansah Lilwin has sponsored the final mock exams of Junior High School (JHS) three students in the Afigya Kwabre North District of the Ashanti Region.

The famous actor also gave away some writing materials as part of his “One Student, One Pen” initiative, which was launched in May in partnership with DPS Ball Point Pens.

Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency reveals that the actor spent over GHC 50, 000 on this sponsorship project with over 1500 students as beneficiaries.

In a social media post, Lilwin said that the gesture was to prepare the students ahead of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which comes off in October.

“Education is an important aspect of our lives. While others take it for granted, there are others who crave it and struggle to get it.

“As part of my social responsibility, I sponsored a mock for all JHS final students in the Afigya Kwabre North District, both public and private candidates,” he said.

“This mock is to eliminate fear and bring hope for their upcoming BECE,” he wrote on Facebook.

Lilwin, who is the owner of the Great Minds International School in the Afigya Kwabre District, has thousands of students enrolled, with the less-privileged enjoying full scholarships.

  • 21 foreigners arrested in Ejisu over illegal immigration

Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested 21 foreign nationals believed to be illegal immigrants at Akokoamong within the Ejisu Municipality.

The arrest follows a joint action by community members who say they have observed the suspicious activities of the persons for months and thus decided to hand them over to the police for further investigations to be conducted.

One of the community leaders, Mohammed Ali, said they caused the arrest of the foreigners because they believe they pose a security threat and as such, they want the relevant authorities to probe their operations.

“In the evenings, you will see them make calls. That is what they have been doing. So as residents, we have to be security conscious. Things go on around here and no one knows what they have been doing.”

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been advocating for stronger collaboration amongst all security agencies to meet the security needs of the country.

According to the GIS, Ghana’s porous borderlines pose a high-security threat to the country.

This threat needs a purposeful cross-intelligence and engagement amongst security agencies and community stakeholders to improve security alertness.

Economy Dr Amoah acknowledged the current economic challenges facing the country coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine war crisis had seriously impacted government programmes.

  • Ashanti Region leads HIV/AIDS prevalence

The Ashanti Region in Ghana accounts for about 4,000 of the 23,495 individuals who tested positive for the human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome during the first half of this year (January to June).

Dr. Thomas Agyako-Poku, the regional coordinator for HIV/AIDS, told Elisha Adarkwah of Class 91.3 FM in an interview that the regional rate is one-fifth of the national rate.

Dr. Agyarko stated that the Ashanti Region is one of the areas with the highest percentage of persons living with HIV/AIDS in the nation, adding, “We’ve been hanging around 3%.”

He said, not only have the Ashanti and the Greater Accra regions always led the rate when it comes to the national count of people living with the disease but also the Ashanti Region does not go beyond the fourth position.

He attributed the prevalence rate of the disease in the region to it being an economic centre of the country.

He said if the region could bring down its figure, it would go a long way to reduce the national figure.

Dr Agyarko, therefore, advised the public to protect themselves against the disease while urging those with it to take their medication to reduce its spread.

“Motorists are hereby cautioned to be extra cautious on the road and avoid overspeeding, drunk driving, wrongful overtaking and careless driving to prevent road crashes,” the GNFS said.

  • The cost of insanity

At Dekyemso in the Ashanti region of Ghana, two female prostitutes fought over a “client”, one who in their business terms described as “a good customer that spends liberally on the sex workers, and always paying higher prices above the charged fee to spend a night with the sisters of the night”.

In the area where the prostitutes, a.k.a, the harlots operate in Dekyemso, there’s one woman who has lasted unusually long in the nightly pleasure business, trade others argue it’s the first-ever amongst human race’. Encompassing Bible and any other known religious text, men bought sex from women who sold it.

Aside from the infamous story of Mary Magdalene, the harlot who was saved from lynching by Jesus Christ, there’s also in the Jewish scriptures a story of Judah, the son of Jacob who conceived a baby with his daughter-in-law, Tamar, through whoredom.

In the Dekyemso case, this particular prostitute under discussion, Ama Joy, wouldn’t give joy to another rival in the pleasure trade.

Akua Comfort seems to be the most beautiful Ashanti to engage in prostitution, and since announcing her presence in the brothel, the male clients never hissed or catcalled Ama Joy, and she virtually went out of business. She was peeved and insane to distraction about this turn of unfortunate events.

The Bono people of Goka say: ‘pemtoa bÉ” a É”di awu’. To wit: broken bottles are deadly.

A broken heart woman in truth is more dangerous than that proverbial broken bottle.

Now, not joyful, Ama Joy mobilised her gang of lawless, bodily built, and macho men. They accosted and held down Akua Comfort. They laid her supine and opened her legs as in the position of a woman lying down for the “religious sex style”.

A reader may think ahead that; ‘then the men had a free day with bouts of sexual rounds with their victim’. But no, a wrongly hastily prediction of the suspense. Ama Joy appeared in the scene, and she brought out a razor from her pocket, she aimed at Akua Comfort’s comfortable genitalia, across all lengths and breadths, she inflicted humiliating mortal wounds in this beautiful girl’s vagina, the asset upon which men shower their last income, and left her to her fate, groping in the darkness til help came in the likeness of the Biblical Good Samaritan.

Thank God Ama Joy and her accomplices are now in the grips of the punitive arms of the law, as Akua Comfort recuperates in the hospital.

    Moral Lesson

    1. Beauty and talent cause envy, so don’t lose your guard in any trade you find yourself in.

    2. Crime does not pay. Insanity costs greatly, so control your anger and live a meaningful life.

  • National Population Council in Ashanti Region without electricity for 2 years

The Ashanti regional office of the National Population Council (NPC) has been operating without electricity for the past two years.

Regional Director, Mercy Adomaa Besseah, laments work has been tough because the office also lacks operational vehicles, computers and other office equipment.

The NPC was established in 1994 as the highest statutory body to conduct research and advise the government on population matters.

The Council has a strong advocacy role to promote the goals and objectives of the National Population Policy, the Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS II) and the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).

The NDC office in Ashanti region is however starved of the needed resources to be productive.

Speaking to David Akuetteh on Luv In The Morning on Luv Fm, Madam Adomaa Besseah noted that the under-resourced office is gradually contributing to the ineffectiveness of its workers.

“All the equipment is outmoded; they have broken down. Sometimes, working becomes difficult. We have the District Population Advisory Committee, however, as a result of financial constraints, we are unable to go down to the district level,” she said.

With a non-functional District Advisory Committee, the Council partners the Ghana Statistical Service to access data to be able to advise the government.

According to Mercy Adomaa Besseah, there has been no proper planning with population figures previously.

This has resulted in the infrastructural disparities in the health and educational sectors.

“When you visit our health centers, one doctor services about 500 patients. How will the doctor find time for you? The situation is the same in our schools. A teacher handles over 100 students. An example is the Free SHS programme. The student numbers are huge. You will find that student discipline is low, what are we training?” she quizzed.

A factor contributing to the growing population is teenage pregnancy.

Currently, the Ashanti Region leads in the prevalence of teenage pregnancy.

Young girls in mining communities are often victims who have little knowledge about sexual reproductive health.

Mercy Adomaa Besseah wants education and sensitization intensified in such communities to curb the menace.

“Let them know the consequences of such acts. If not, the dependency ratio also increases. Often you will find that the victim also has five other siblings who are also pregnant,” she said.

Yet community outreaches done by the National Population Council has been challenging.

The Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into an alleged misconduct involving some police officers in the Ashanti Region.

This is after the officers were seen in a viral video engaged in a heated argument.

Reports indicate that the incident happened on July 20, 2022, after the Foase District Police Commander saw three FPU officers conducting a traffic check on the Atwima Yabi-Dida stretch and cautioned them against the exercise. Cpl Boakye was offended by the directive and refused to comply.

This triggered the heated exchange between the two.

“Meet me there,” he stressed. “You are not the one who brought me here,” he added.

“I should meet you at FPU?, I will not come there but you will get me” Commander Quansah retorted.

  • Police probe FPU officers alleged harassment of Foase District Police Commander

Police in the Ashanti Region have begun investigations into an incident where three police officers with the Formed Police Unit (FPU) allegedly harassed the Foase District Police Commander, Supt. Albert Quansah.

Citi News understands the FPU officers also threatened to end the life of Supt. Quansah following an altercation after he saw them conducting a motor check on the Atwima Yabi-Dida stretch on 20th July 2022.

The source added that, following the incident, 11 officers from the FPU led by one Chief Inspector Ohene Karikari Ernest then stormed the Foase District Police Headquarters later in the day and allegedly harassed the district commander.

Chief Inspector Ohene Karikari Ernest then allegedly threatened to kill the district commander if he harasses any of the FPU personnel.

Citi News sources say one Supt. K. K Kawudie led five armed personnel from the FPU base in Kumasi to the Foase District Police Headquarters to also “intimidate” the district police commander, where the said officer also allegedly threatened to cut short the life of the district commander.

  • No voters register available; 2 days to Ashanti Region NPP elections

Four candidates in the upcoming elections to elect new executives to run the affairs of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, have petitioned the national executive body of the party to postpone the elections scheduled for Friday, May 27, 2022, so as to enable them deal with some irregularities.

The four petitioners, all aspiring to be the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP are Oheneba Kofi Adum Bawuah, Robert Asare Bediako, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah and Kwabena Owusu Aduomi.

The incumbent Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako has not endorsed the petition but in principle, all the four have endorsed the petition spearheaded by Oheneba Kofi Adum Bawuah.

Bawuah presented the petition to the party national headquarters in Accra on Tuesday [May 24, 2022].

Bawuah strongly called for a postponement until the issues are resolved as to him, it was unacceptable for example that with just two days to the elections, the electoral register is not available to each of the candidates.

He has decided to advise himself and stay out of the elections as another form of protest, if the national headquarters does not resolve the issues and allow the elections to go ahead with the outstanding issues, something he said could have dire consequences for the party in the 2024 elections.

The contest for the Ashanti Regional chairmanship of the NPP has gained momentum.

Although there are other positions at stake in the upcoming regional delegates conference, the one that is being fiercely contested is the regional chairmanship, which has five party stalwarts battling it out in a who-is-who affair.

The frontrunners are Chairman Odeneho Kwaku Appiah (COKA) and Bernard Antwi Boasiako a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi.

    Reasons for petition

Among the reasons for the petition asking for the postponement is the unavailability of the voters register to aspirants for them to know the voters with two days to the elections on Friday.

They have also raised issue with the venue for the elections – the premises of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC).

The candidates are of the view that the venue, which is a place for running government business, does not sit well for the party to organise it’s regional elections there as it qualifies as incumbent government abuse in using state/government facility for political party event/activity.

Their third issue is that of a conflict of interest argument, where they have accused the chairman of the Election Committee, Simon Osei Mensah who is the also Ashanti Regional Minister of conflict of interest.

They have alleged that, Mr Osei Mensah is a relative of one of the candidates, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, who is the incumbent chairman seeking re-election and insists that Mr Osei Mensah has openly declared his support for Boasiako and has openly been campaigning for him, even though he is the chairman of the election committee.

Chairman Wontumi before becoming Regional Chairman was constituency chairman for Bosomtwe where Osei Mensah also served as Member of Parliament. According to Bawuah, the two of them are known to have worked together very well and that it was fair that, Osei Mensah stays away as chairman of the election committee on grounds of conflict of interest.

Kofi Adum Bawuah for instance has said they were only made aware that Mr Osei Mensah was chairing the election committee just last week [Saturday] hence their inability to challenge his position earlier.

They want the leadership of the party at the national headquarters to intervene and postpone the election scheduled for Friday, May 27, 2022 as the “shenanigans” leading to the elections was embarrassing.

With two days to the elections, the petitioners argued that, they don’t even have the electoral register.

    Ashanti Region has 47 constituencies.

Each constituency has 17 representatives/voters when it come to the regional elections. It is made up the 10 elected constituency officers and seven others appointed by the constituency executives.

There is also one representative each from all the recognised bodies of the party in the region such as NASARA and the Tertiary Education Confederacy (TESCON).

All these delegates, the petitioners argue are supposed to be on the voters register [album] but they don’t have the register as of Tuesday night [May 24, 2022].

To them, since they followed the constituency elections, there could be the assumption that they know each of the 10 elected officers from the constituencies but the remaining seven from each constituency appointed by the executives are not known, same as the representatives from the recognised bodies.

“We can’t even contact them to send our campaign messages to them since we don’t know them with two days to the election,” Bawuah lamented.

Bawuah for instance, speaking on the Boiling Point radio talk programme on Accra based Oman FM on Tuesday night [May 24, 2022] monitored by Graphic Online agreed the timing between the constituency elections and the regional one could be a factor since many of the constituencies are still in the process of appointing their seven representatives.

But that is the more reason I think the election should be postponed, he said.

With the exception of the incumbent Chairman Wontumi who has not raised any issue since, all of these seem be working out to give him an advantage, all the other aspirants are in on this one with me, Bawuah said.

“If national does not act on this, I for instance will decide to advise myself and step aside and will not continue with the contest as a form of a protest,” Bawuah added.

He said these are some of the reasons that accounted for voter apathy in the 2020 general elections in the Ashanti Region.

The incident was said to have been triggered off after a fire from a nearby mechanic shop extended to the shop where the cars were being worked on.

Among the vehicles destroyed by the fire were, Range Rover, Toyota Tundra, two Jeeps and three Toyota Highlanders.

According to the owner of the shop, Seidu Abdulai, the fire could have been stopped, if personnel of the Ghana Fire Service at Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and Komfo Anokye had responded on time.

  • Bekwai govt hospital laments encroachment on project site

Health officials in Bekwai in the Ashanti Region say they are grappling with the encroachment of lands at the yet-to-be-completed 120-bed capacity hospital project.

Officials are worried the development may hinder the future expansion of the project.

Administrator for the Bekwai Government Hospital, Eric Frimpong expressed these concerns during a visit by the Health Minister to the project site.

“Expansion is now one of the most challenging things that we now face as management, the allocation of the land was about 152 acres but the community has taken about 80 acres of the land which will most likely affect the future expansion of this project,” said Frimpong, adding that, “The next facility to the mortuary is a private accommodation and we know that it poses health implications.”

“With an infectious disease like COVID-19, the community stands a chance of getting infected. We have given them a lot of cautions, written to the MCE and the MP about the takeover of the land but no one seems to care,” he continued.

The 120-bed capacity hospital, which is on the verge of completion has been under construction for almost five decades.

Although the project had been captured in annual budgets of successive governments, it has seen little improvement.

The facility which started in the early 1970s now has two contractors — Consar Ghana Ltd and Ellipse Company — winding up their works for the planned inauguration in November this year.

    Lifeline

The completion of the multi-million-dollar project was given a boost when Parliament, in August 2019, approved a €2 million facility towards its completion.

Completion and inauguration of the municipal hospital would be a dream come true for the chiefs and people of the Bekwai Municipality and its surrounding communities who have waited for decades to see the completion of the project.

When finished, the hospital would decongest the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). This is due to its size, departments and strategic location in the Ashanti Region, which makes it easy to reach from the Eastern and Central regions.

Some of the key facilities that the hospital would have are an Accident and Emergency unit, Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) unit, Surgical theatres and wards, X-Ray unit, general consulting rooms, mother and baby unit, laboratory, antenatal unit and staff accommodation.

    Unique feature

One unique feature of the hospital is a guest lodge where relations who need to be close to patients on admission at the facility would be housed while waiting for their relatives to recover.

This is the first of its kind in any government hospital in the country.

The guest lodge will remove the challenges of transportation and accommodation faced by relatives of patients on admission at the hospital.

Apart from ensuring that the guests can attend to the social needs of their relatives while on admission at the right time, it will also save the relations the drudgery of hovering around health facilities as they wait for their relations to recover from their ailments at the hospital.

The new hospital will be disability-friendly.

  • COVID-19 treatment centres in Ashanti run out of beds

The two coronavirus disease (COVID-19) treatment centres in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region have run out of beds and are unable to admit new patients.

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), which has the capacity of 18 beds and the Kumasi South Hospital at Agogo, which also serves as the Regional Hospital with 20 beds, are both full as a result of the increase in the number of cases being recorded in the region.

The region currently has 2,403 positive cases with 38 deaths.

    Briefing

Addressing the media in Kumasi yesterday, the Ashanti Regional Director of Health, Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang, said the rapid mutation of the virus was also exposing health workers to the disease.

According to him, 97 health workers in the region had contracted the virus with one death.

They include 18 doctors and 47 nurses, with the rest being auxiliary workers such as cleaners, contact tracers, physician assistants and administrative staff.

Dr Tenkorang said 14 of the workers had recovered and were doing well while the other 82 were being managed at home.

He explained that the changing signs and symptoms of the virus were posing a great danger to the health workers as many of them were being exposed inadvertently.

Dr Tenkorang said because some of the patients did not report with the known symptoms of the disease, “before they are diagnosed of having coronavirus, the health workers have already been exposed. Most of the cases being recorded lately present with malaria-like symptoms and general malaise”.

    Concerns

The director expressed worry about the rising cases in the region and appealed to residents to strictly adhere to the protocols and guidelines on safety to stem the spread.

He said the region could be overwhelmed with cases if the people failed to change their attitudes and continue to behave in wanton disregard of safety protocols such as social distancing, washing of hands with soap under running water and wearing of nose masks.

In the region, the KATH is the only facility with four ventilators; the other centres have none.

Dr Tenkorang said plans were advanced for the expansion of the Kumasi South Hospital (KSH) treatment centre to increase its capacity to 41 beds, while seven beds had been secured at the Suntreso Hospital for the treatment of COVID-19 cases.

He said a senior medical officer had also agreed to offer his facility as a treatment centre and when “that happens, we will have a total of 138-bed capacity for treatment”.

The director further said there was the need for the establishment of more isolation centres to cater for the rising cases in the region.

Currently, the isolation centre can only take 207 people “and luckily for us most of them were discharged yesterday”, Dr Tenkorang said, adding “we are in talks with the Ghana Registered Nurses Association who have also agreed to offer their hostel as an isolation centre”.

    Contact tracers

On the purported strike action by contact tracers in the region, Dr Tenkorang admitted that the allowance paid to the volunteers had been slashed from GH¢150 to GH¢70.

He explained that during the lockdown when the workload was high, the health directorate recruited volunteers to assist the staff of the Ministry of Health in the The amount was paid to only the volunteers while the staff of the ministry were paid only their usual monthly salaries.

However, after the lifting of the ban on movement, the ministry decided to do away with the volunteers and use only the staff for the contact tracing and added that the volunteers were being used only in Greater Accra and Ashanti regions, while the other regions relied solely on their own staff.

The director said some of the districts later requested to also use volunteers for contact tracing as they did not have enough personnel to perform that task.
According to him, it was subsequently agreed that those who wanted to use the volunteers should budget for them from their own resources and “they agreed to pay them GH¢70 a day and this was communicated to them”.

“Besides, we have asked those who have any problem to report to the regional health directorate but we are yet to see any of them,” he said.

  • Ashanti Region: 97 health workers test positive for COVID-19

Some 97 health workers in the Ashanti Region have contracted the Coronavirus disease with one death.

They include 18 doctors and 47 nurses, with the rest being auxiliary workers such as cleaners, contact tracers, physician assistants and administrative staff.

The Ashanti Regional Director of Health, Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang, who made this known at a press briefing in Kumasi, 14 of the workers had recovered and were doing well while the other 82 were being managed at home.

    Treatment centres full

Dr Tenkorang also noted that the two coronavirus disease (COVID-19) treatment centres in Kumasi have run out of beds and are unable to admit new patients.

    Concerns

The director expressed worry about the rising cases in the region and appealed to residents to strictly adhere to the protocols and guidelines on safety to stem the spread.

Mr Simon Osei Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister, has warned that the police would continue to arrest recalcitrant persons who refuse to wear face masks as had been directed by the President.

He said the wearing of face or nose masks was now mandatory and the police together with other security agencies, would ensure that everybody complied with it as part of measures to contain the further spread of the coronavirus in the Region.

Speaking at the launch of an exercise to disinfect and fumigate all police stations, barracks and security installations in the Ashanti Region in Kumasi, Mr Osei Mensah, commended the regional police command for arresting and committing recalcitrant persons to do community work.

The police as part of measures to enforce the wearing of the nose masks in the Region, have been arresting those who breach the directive and commit them to undertake community works such as cleaning the drains, weeding, picking of litters in public places, as well as sweeping of streets in Kumasi.

This action by the police had had positive impact since most people now wear the nose masks and the Regional Minister is very happy about the outcome.

The fumigation exercise, is being conducted by the Zoomlion Company Limited in over 158 police stations and barracks in the Region.

It is part of several measures put in place by the government to improve upon environmental health in public places.

Already, all markets, lorry parks and Senior High Schools in the country, have been fumigated to rid them of micro-organisms, rodents and reptiles.

Mr Osei Mensah said the government was doing all these with huge financial commitments aimed at containing the further spread of the virus in the country.

He pledged the support of the Regional Coordinating Council to ensure the success of the exercise in the Region.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr David Agyeman Adjem, Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said the exercise had become necessary in view of the confirmation of COVID-19 positive cases in some police cells and barracks.

  • Father who brutalized 3-year-old son granted GH¢30k bail

The Kumasi Circuit Court 2 has granted a GH¢30,000 bail with three sureties to a man who inflicted deep wounds on his three-year-old son with a cane and wire.

According to the judge on the case, a decision to remand the accused person would rather prove more harmful to the suspect due to the effects of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The father, Ebenezer Nana Bonsu, who was arrested by the police in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, earlier in the week was reported to have vented his anger on his three-year-old son for being disobedient, wetting his bed and also being a financial burden to him.

However, the 26-year-old man who appeared before court, Thursday, May 14, 2020, pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and causing harm. He told the court that his actions were but a way of instilling discipline in his son.

The court presided over by Patricia Amponsah ruled that Ebenezer should stay away from the child until further notice.

According to reports, however, family of the suspect indicated that their relative has been battling with mental health issues which they believe could have accounted for his unwarranted abuse on his son.

Meanwhile, the social welfare department is set to foot the medical bills of the three-year-old boy who is currently nursing his wounds at the Manhyia Hospital in Kumasi and the case has been adjourned to May 21 2020.

  • Bekwai Hospital nears completion five decades after sod-cutting

For almost five decades, the people of Bekwai in the Ashanti Region have had to complain about the delay in the completion of work on the municipal hospital.

Although the project has been captured in annual budgets of successive governments, little had been done to continue work on it, bringing difficulties on the people in accessing quality health care.

However, there is light at the end of the tunnel as the 120-bed capacity hospital is on the verge of completion.

The facility which started in the early 1970s now has two contractors — Consar Ghana Ltd and Ellipse Company — winding up their works for the planned inauguration in November this year.

A visit to the facility last Saturday by the Daily Graphic saw the contractors eagerly fixing equipment and completing remaining civil works to meet the November deadline for handing over to the government and subsequently to the Bekwai health authorities for use.

    Lifeline

The completion of the multi-million-dollar project was given a boost when Parliament, in August 2019, approved a €2 million facility towards its completion.

A completion and inauguration of the municipal hospital would be a dream come true for the chiefs and people of the Bekwai Municipality and its surrounding communities who have waited for decades to see the completion of the project.

Apart from ensuring that the guests are able to attend to the social needs of their relatives while on admission at the right time, it will also save the relations the drudgery of hovering around health facilities as they wait for their relations to recover from their ailments at the hospital.

The new hospital, which is disability friendly, has a linkage of walkways from various locations of the facility.

    Records

The Bekwai Municipality has a total of 18 health facilities comprising six hospitals (Government, Christian Health Association of Ghana, and private), four Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, three health centres and five clinics (CHAG and private).

All the facilities dotted in various locations in the municipality have been very instrumental in the delivery of quality health care to the people.

In 2018, a total of 226,859 out patients department (OPD) cases were recorded in all health facilities in the municipality out of which 54,779 representing 24 per cent were recorded at the old Bekwai Government Hospital alone.

The story was however different in 2019 where the cases stood at 221,450 for the entire municipality out of which 55,204, representing 25 per cent of the total OPD cases came from the Bekwai Hospital alone.

    Old hospital

The old Bekwai Government Hospital which the Municipal Director of Health, Mr Clement Nti-Boateng, described as “A glorified health centre” does not have enough space for clients and staff. It also lacks key departments and staff.

Apart from the inadequacies that the old hospital has, it is not able to provide the needed standard health care.

These and many other reasons necessitated the construction of a new district hospital that would bring with it the needed space, equipment, staff and all others so it would be able to serve all its patients with the standard of health care needed.

The Municipal Director of Health told the Daily Graphic that he had started moves to get adequate staff to manage the new departments which have been brought on board in the new hospital.

This, he said, was being done through a collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Directorate of Health to ensure that by the time of handing over, the right personnel would have been posted to the new facility to begin its operation.

    MCE, MP impressed

The Municipal Chief Executive for Bekwai, Mr Kwaku Kyei-Baffour, said the completion and the subsequent usage of the new district hospital would be a dream come true since it would bring the much needed health care for the people — some of whom have to travel far distances to seek health care due to the lack of certain services at the old hospital.

Again, he appealed to the people in the municipality to continue toexercise patience as everything possible was being done to ensure that the project was completed on schedule for use.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bekwai, Mr Joseph Osei Owusu, at a recent tour of the facility with the media, appealed to the contractors to ensure that they maintained the quality standard of the work by following due process in all their activities.

He commended the contractors for the swift way they were working on the project many other governments had failed to complete for use.

The Project Manager for Ellipse Company, the construction entity, Mr Maxwell Opoku Amoah, said the project would be completed before the handing over date of November 2020.

He said about 85 per cent of works was completed with the remaining works being the installation of equipment, completion of few civil works and tarring of the roads.

  • Ashanti Region to receive major facelift through numerous road construction projects

The Roads Minister says government has initiated various road projects to be undertaken in Kumasi so as to give the Ashanti Region a major facelift.

These projects, according to Kwesi Amoako Atta will include the construction of four interchanges at Suame, Oforikrom, Airport Roundabout and Ahodwo Santasi all in the capital city of Kumasi.

“By the time we finish the new roads together with all the interchanges, and also improve the road network generally in Kumasi, Ashanti Region will be a place to visit because people will be comfortable when driving.

“Not only will there not be traffic but the roads will also be smooth and people can enjoy this within the next two to three years.”

Speaking at a press brief in the regional capital Monday, the Minister said plans are far advance for the commencement of the over 150 projects which have all been sourced to local contractors.

“Four major interchanges are going to get started within Kumasi. And we have gone far with the process. We also have a bypass program in the pipeline. This will be done to create additional travel options for commuters.

“A number of roads outside Kumasi are also being undertaken, there are about 156 projects that are currently being done in the Ashanti region. And these projects are being done by strong contractors in our nation.”

Mr Amoako Atta also revealed that phase two of the Abuakwa-Tanoso stretch on the Kumasi-Sunyani road will be started by the end of May.

According to the Minister, although phase one remains uncompleted, work on both will run concurrently.

“We have done 56% of the job and the rest will be done. We know how important this project is to residents and Ghanaians. The EPA authorities have improved the contract for phase two and work shall commence before the end of May.

“I want to assure people that the government of Nana Akufo-Addo is tackling the Sofoline interchange and we shall within the next one to two months finish the first phase and since we have approval from EPA, the next part will also begin.”

Residents of Abuakwa and its environs in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region took to the streets in September last year to demonstrate against the delay in the execution of the Sofoline interchange project and other road-related matters in the district.

They complained of the heavy traffic jam as a result of the delay in the project.

Started in August 2007, the project that spans some 11 kilometres is yet to be completed.
