No journalist harmed on duty will be left uncompensated – Srem-Sai

The government has pledged to protect media practitioners against attacks, intimidation, and other forms of abuse in the line of duty.

During the third Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Dinner Night at the Ghana International Press Centre on Monday, December 23, the Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, stated that journalists who sustain injuries while performing their professional duties will be compensated and supported.

He noted that the assurance forms part of the government’s efforts to safeguard press freedom.

“The first undertaking is that we will not hurt any journalist. The second is that we will not allow anyone to hurt any journalist. The third is that we will punish any person who hurts a journalist. And the final one is that we will compensate any journalist who has been hurt,” Dr. Srem-Sai stated.

Assaults on journalists in the country remain a troubling issue, often making headlines, with recent incidents drawing widespread concern. President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, condemned attacks on journalists during the Ablekuma North rerun election in July.

At the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station in the Ablekuma North constituency, some individuals engaged in a scuffle with police personnel. Additionally, a JoyNews journalist was slapped by an unknown individual, while a journalist with GH One Television, Banahene Agyekum, was also slapped by a police officer.

The Ghana Police Service interdicted the officer caught on camera slapping Agyekum during the rerun election. In line with internal disciplinary procedures, he was referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation and withdrawn from ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North.

Ghana has currently set a record as the first African country to make a financial contribution to the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM), President John Dramani Mahama announced.

The Fund, established in 2022 by a coalition of governments, philanthropic organisations, and media development experts, aims to address the crisis in media sustainability, particularly in countries where independent journalism is most at risk. Its objectives include increasing resources for trustworthy journalism, supporting long-term solutions to media financing, and promoting democracy, peace, and security through informed public discourse.

Speaking at the High-level International Conference on Information Integrity and Independent Media on Tuesday, October 29, in Paris, France, President Mahama announced that, as a demonstration of his government’s commitment to promoting and ensuring independent media freedom, Ghana will be the first country to contribute financially to the Fund.

“In addition, I’m proud to declare that Ghana will become the first African country to make a financial contribution to the International Fund for Public Interest Media. This gesture reflects our conviction that independent journalism and reliable information are indispensable public goods,” he said. He called on other global leaders to move from words to action in their shared commitment to fight for the public media interest and ensure the genuineness of information shared worldwide.

“The time has come for all of us to translate our shared ideals into tangible action, to demonstrate genuine commitment to supporting public interest media and safeguarding the integrity of information,” he added.

The President also announced that Ghana is set to become a full member of the Partnership for Information and Democracy, noting that the necessary processes for membership have been initiated. The Partnership for Information and Democracy is a non-binding intergovernmental agreement launched in 2019 during the United Nations General Assembly. It builds on the International Declaration on Information and Democracy and aims to protect and promote reliable, pluralistic, and independent information as a cornerstone of democracy.

“This decision has been officially communicated through the appropriate diplomatic channels, affirming Ghana’s unwavering commitment to the principles of transparency, accountability, and open governance. Our landmark decision sends a clear message to the international community that Ghana remains steadfast in advancing the frontiers of freedom, upholding the rule of law, and serving as a model nation in promoting democracy and good governance,” President Mahama noted.

President Mahama expressed satisfaction that the conference achieved tangible outcomes, including: “The endorsement of the Paris Declaration on Multilateral Action for Information Integrity and Independent Media, reaffirming our collective commitment to free, independent, and pluralistic information ecosystems; renewed political and financial commitments to replenish the International Fund for Public Interest Media, targeting €130 million between 2026 and 2028 to support independent journalism worldwide; the establishment of a Consultative Committee to enhance coordination among states, civil society, and the Forum for Information and Democracy; and, above all, a shared understanding that the defence of truth must now be a sustained and collective endeavour, transcending national and institutional boundaries.”

Over the last three years since IFPIM’s establishment, several countries, including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Sweden, and the United States, have contributed financially, with varying levels of support from the US, often through philanthropic foundations.

Major philanthropic organisations have also played a crucial role, including the MacArthur Foundation, Luminate, the Gates Foundation, Craig Newmark Philanthropies, and the Open Society Foundations.

By the end of 2024, the Fund had accrued over $50 million USD in total funding, supporting 122 media organisations across 31 countries, with an average grant size of approximately $275,000 USD. Consequently, 63% of grantees reported increased total revenue, while 88% expanded their audience reach.

President Mahama’s latest commitment to media freedom through a financial contribution to IFPIM comes at a time when assaults on journalists remain frequent in Ghana, affecting the country’s global ranking on press freedom. He pledged continued support for media safety, freedom, and a compensation package for journalists who have been assaulted while on duty.

During the GJA’s courtesy call on Friday, September 5, Mr. Albert Dwumfuor reminded the president to uphold his promise to ensure the safety and sustainability of the media in Ghana. He appealed to the president to take concrete steps to end assaults on media professionals.

“Unwarranted attacks on journalists must end. We call on you to ensure that perpetrators of violence against media personnel are held accountable,” he stressed.

During a media engagement on August 16, 2024, then-presidential candidate Mahama pledged to journalists that once in office, his government would protect media freedom and ensure their safety.

“The best thing you can give the media is to give them the freedom to do their work. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened under this government. Media people have been hounded, some have run into exile, some have been threatened, their lives have been threatened, and indeed some have paid the ultimate price like Ahmed Suale did,” he said. He continued with a personal pledge: “You can trust that as a person who is a member of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) myself, I am not the kind of person who would hound the media, and so one gift I can give to you is the freedom to do your work without anybody intimidating and harassing you.”

Mr. Dwumfuor urged President Mahama to exercise his executive powers by enacting stronger laws to empower security agencies to protect journalists. He noted that attacks on journalists are often premeditated, making them aggravated offences that require tougher punishment.

“Your Excellency, we encourage you to invoke your executive powers to enact a law to empower security agencies to protect journalists. Since most of these attacks are premeditated, they must be treated as aggravated offences. If we continue to treat them as misdemeanours, it will not serve as a deterrent,” he said.

President John Dramani Mahama, at the same event, revealed that he has received a report from the Ghana Police Service containing records of all victims of electoral violence. He stated that after a thorough review of the report, victims would be duly compensated. Additionally, he assured that the compensation package would also cover journalists who have suffered repeated attacks during elections.

“…And so once that is done, I’m sure that if there were journalists involved, they would also be considered for compensation,” he added.

  • Afenyo-Markin’s assault case docket is being reviewed by A-G – Srem Sai

Afenyo-Markin’s assault case docket is being reviewed by A-G – Srem Sai

The Office of the Attorney General (A-G) is reviewing the assault case involving Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for prosecutorial assessment and decision, according to Deputy AG Justice Srem Sai. Justice Srem Sai made this revelation on his official Facebook page on Friday, November 7.

“I can confirm that the docket on the case — The Republic v. Alexander Afenyo-Markin is at the Office of the Attorney-General awaiting prosecutorial review and decision. The case involves a complaint of assault,” he wrote.

The incident in question dates back to May, when Alexander Afenyo-Markin was seen assaulting a police officer during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration. In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @Popony_J, a group of police officers had created a barricade at the entrance of Parliament House to prevent protesters from entering the forecourt.

Afenyo-Markin, along with Director of Communications for the NPP Richard Ahiagbah, was among the protesters blocked by police. The Minority Leader appeared visibly upset and struck one of the officers on the head. While the reason for his actions has not been officially explained, it is believed that the Effutu MP may have been frustrated at being denied entry, as he was expected to deliver a petition to the Judiciary Service.

Tempers flared as the Minority Leader, Hon. Afenyo-Markin, was nearly denied entry into the forecourt of Parliament House for the presentation of a second petition to the Speaker.

The NPP led the #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration in response to President John Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The purpose of the protest was to defend judicial independence and push back against what participants described as executive interference in the judiciary.

The demonstration saw participation from several allied political parties, including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), the National Democratic Party (NDP), the People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM). The protest began at 5:00 a.m. with participants assembling at a park opposite the Supreme Court before marching through Accra and ending at Jubilee House, where they presented their petition.

Following the clash between Afenyo-Markin and the police, the Ghana Police Service, in a statement dated May 8, 2025, directed the Minority Leader to present himself to assist with investigations into the incident.

The Ghana Police Service confirmed that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had opened an inquiry into allegations that the Effutu MP assaulted a uniformed officer at the entrance to Parliament House. This followed a formal request submitted by the CID to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, who instructed Mr. Afenyo-Markin to cooperate with law enforcement officials.

In compliance with the Speaker’s directive, the Minority Leader appeared before the police on Wednesday, May 7, to provide his version of events. Later, police disclosed that a second investigation was underway based on a counter-complaint filed by Mr. Afenyo-Markin himself. According to the MP, he was not the aggressor but the victim of assault by the same officer involved.

Detailing the incident, Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated that while leading protesters to Parliament to submit a petition calling for stronger judicial independence, he was unexpectedly attacked by an officer identified as Constable Forson.

“The blow left me momentarily dazed and struggling to breathe,” he recounted. He added that he was quickly assisted by parliamentary security personnel and demonstrators nearby and was taken to a rest area before continuing with the petition presentation.

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of the NPP in Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, Bright Ofori Ampofo, defended Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin regarding the events at the #SaveTheJudiciary protest.

Mr. Ampofo explained that Afenyo-Markin was forced to react after a police officer struck him during the demonstration. However, Ampofo maintains that the lawmaker’s conduct was a response to provocation.

He said, “Just when we were about to pass the barricade, this police officer rushed towards him, crouched, and punched him [Afenyo-Markin] in the chest.”

Mr. Ampofo emphasized the severity of the blow, stating that it was so intense that Afenyo-Markin nearly lost consciousness. “The honourable member almost passed out. We had to escort him to the entrance of Parliament where we gave him some water to help him recover. This caused a delay in presenting the petition for about 30 minutes,” he explained.

He further shared that Afenyo-Markin complained of dizziness after the incident and needed a brief rest before continuing with the protest. Mr. Ampofo noted that the Minority Leader was upset, saying that his security was inadequate. “He was even angry with us because he said we didn’t provide him enough security,” Ampofo remarked.

Mr. Ampofo also questioned the officer’s potential political ties, suggesting the attack may have been politically motivated. “I’m certain he’s an NDC police officer. Why would someone hit a prominent figure like Honourable Afenyo-Markin on the grounds of Parliament, his own turf?” Ampofo asked.

He concluded that Afenyo-Markin’s actions were purely in self-defense. “He was trying to protect himself. He thought another blow might follow, so he was attempting to shield himself, and we quickly got him out of the situation,” he said.

Seeking justice, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, was officially petitioned by Afenyo-Markin to investigate the alleged assault by Constable Forson during the #SaveTheJudiciary protest. In the petition, Mr. Afenyo-Markin described the officer as “a tall, fair, and heavily built officer” stationed at the entrance of Parliament House to provide security during the protest. He alleged that the officer physically assaulted him at the parliamentary gate, calling for swift disciplinary measures.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police revealed that it found no evidence to support the claim made by the Minority Leader that he was assaulted by the police officer.

In a statement, the CID emphasized: “The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has forwarded the docket on the alleged assault of a police officer by the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to the Attorney-General, noting the MP’s failure to provide a medical report.”

The occurrence transpired in the early hours of Thursday morning.

As per the medical superintendent of the facility, Dr Jerry Kwaku Vlad Nkegbe, the individuals had brought their relatives to the facility for treatment, but unfortunately, the patient later passed away.

The group surrounded the facility and insisted on obtaining the body of their deceased relative.

Dr. Jerry Kwaku Vlad Nkegbe said in an interview that some of the attackers were arrested and also enumerated some of the equipment that were destroyed by the angry youth.

“The police have arrested some of them and the police have promised to follow up on arresting the other assailants who committed that dastardly act.

  • Surgeon under investigation for allegedly assaulting patient during surgery in China

Surgeon under investigation for allegedly assaulting patient during surgery in China

Chinese authorities have launched an investigation into a shocking incident at a hospital, where a surgeon is accused of physically assaulting a patient mid-operation.

The incident, which occurred in 2019 but only recently gained public attention, involved the surgeon allegedly hitting an 82-year-old female patient several times in the head during an eye surgery. Captured on video, the incident quickly spread on Chinese social media, causing widespread indignation.

The hospital in question, part of Aier China’s network of eye hospitals, is located in Guigang, a city in southwestern China. According to Aier China, the patient experienced discomfort from the local anaesthesia, leading to involuntary head and eye movements during the procedure. Communication issues arose, as the patient spoke a local dialect and seemingly did not understand the surgeon’s Mandarin warnings, prompting the surgeon’s aggressive response.

Following the surgery, the hospital management offered an apology and compensated the patient’s family with 500 yuan. However, the patient’s son revealed that his mother suffered from bruises and, more alarmingly, is now blind in her left eye, although it is unclear if this resulted from the incident.

Aier China has taken disciplinary actions, suspending the surgeon, who also served as the hospital dean, and dismissing the hospital’s CEO. These actions were taken for “serious violations” of the group’s regulations, which also included other unmentioned offenses.

The case resurfaced when Dr. Ai Fen, a prominent Chinese doctor known for her early warnings during the Wuhan Covid outbreak, shared the CCTV footage on her Weibo account, where she has over two million followers. Dr. Ai has been in legal conflicts with Aier China since 2021 after she claimed to have nearly lost sight in one eye following a surgery at one of their facilities, a claim the hospital group denies.

Businessman charged to pay GHS2,400 for assaulting Pastor

53-year-old businessman, Kwamina Duncan, also known as Nigeriaman, has been slapped with a fine of 200 penalty units (GH¢2,400) by the Agona Nsaba Magistrate’s Court for assaulting Pastor Benjamin Kwaitu amid a heated land dispute.

The court, presided over by Victor Kusi, mandated Duncan to pay the fine and cover the medical bills incurred by the Pastor.

Detective Chief Inspector Lawson Aglago, prosecuting the case, outlined the details to the court. The complainant, originally from Akim Oda, lived in Nsaba, Agona East District of the Central Region, where Duncan, the convict, also resided.

The altercation began several months ago when a dispute arose over a piece of land gifted to the Pastor by a family member of Duncan. Contesting the legitimacy of the gift, Duncan sought to claim ownership of the land.

On Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at approximately 0700hrs, an incident unfolded at Nsaba Health Center Junction. The Pastor, along with some church members, was there for church activities when Duncan, on a motorbike, arrived and confronted the Pastor regarding the contested land.

During the confrontation, Duncan struck the Pastor’s face with a plastic bottle filled with oil, spilling it on him and some of his church members. Subsequently, the Pastor reported the incident, leading to the issuance of a medical form for his hospital treatment.

After investigations, the convict was charged with the assault offence.

Man, 32, evades authorities after assaulting girlfriend, her sister, and mother

Authorities in the Western North region are actively searching for Rojer Addoquaye, a 32-year-old individual, following accusations of assaulting his girlfriend, her sister, and mother. This altercation stemmed from a disagreement involving unreturned late-night phone calls and suspicions of infidelity.

As per a report aired on Onua FM’s Midday News on August 11, 2023, Addoquaye reportedly approached Abigail Kyerematen, his 22-year-old girlfriend who is a student in a Senior High School (SHS), and accused her of being unfaithful. He attributed her lack of response to his nocturnal phone calls to this suspicion.

The news coverage provided a comprehensive account that Addoquaye subsequently went to Abigail’s house to collect certain items he had bought for her. This visit led to the situation escalating into a physical clash, during which all three members of Abigail’s family were allegedly subjected to physical assault.

Providing her perspective on the incident in the aforementioned report, Abigail shared, “I was sleeping in the room and he called me, so we talked and I told him that I was sleeping…and he said he came to my house around 11 pm to knock on my door but I couldn’t hear because I was asleep, so I didn’t open the door…

“Yesterday evening I was in the house when he came to ask me why I couldn’t pick his calls at night, and that, is it because I was having an affair with a man in the room?”

Abigail continued, “He bought a phone for me, so he said he was coming for the phone. I told him that if he is coming for the phone, then he should allow me to remove my SIM card and give the phone back to him.

“He was struggling with us in the house…and he really beat us—myself, my sister, and my mother…he even damaged the phone. He also damaged a TV in the room.”

Armed men assault 14-year-old in Gomoa Potsin

The residents of Gomoa Potsin have expressed deep concern and fear over the escalating criminal activities in the area, urging the authorities to take immediate action to address the situation.

The urgency for intervention was sparked by a harrowing incident where a 14-year-old boy, Philip Dadzie, a JHS 2 student at Gomoa Potsin D/A Junior High School, was brutally attacked by unknown assailants while jogging on the Potsin-Dominase stretch.

The attackers, riding on a motorcycle, approached the victim under the pretense of seeking directions, but shockingly launched a vicious assault on him, inflicting deep machete wounds.

Eyewitnesses who spotted the victim after the attack immediately raised an alarm, leading to his rescue and subsequent treatment at the Gomoa Potsin Polyclinic.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Philip Dadzie was later transferred to Accra’s 37 Military Hospital, where he is currently fighting for his life, especially due to a severe head wound.

Residents in the region are alarmed by the disturbing trend of such attacks and assert that they live in constant fear for their safety.

They also express concerns about the limited resources available to the local police, hindering their ability to effectively combat crime in the area.

As a result, the community is urging for improvements and reforms to address the rising crime rate. Jerry Kwaku, along with the medical superintendent at the Gomoa Potsin Polyclinic, Vlad Nkegbe, lamented the surge in similar assaults, highlighting that the clinic has treated multiple victims of attacks by unknown perpetrators, further emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and security of the residents.

Assault case in Adisadel College could have been handled out of court – Joe Wise

First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, also known as Joe Wise, has raised concerns about the declining standards of discipline in Ghana’s educational sector.

He believes that it is crucial to reevaluate the upbringing of young people to ensure they become more responsible adults in the future.

Speaking at the 10th-anniversary celebration of Fettehman Senior High School over the weekend, he also commented on the widely known Adisadel College assault case.

“We should look at how we bring up children in this country since it is becoming a challenge. The kind of upbringing is important. There is no need for him to be that violent towards another student.

“If we discuss this in isolation, we would miss it. What happened in the school is a reflection of what is happening in the country. We think we are not supposed to punish students and this is how we pay for it as a country.

“There is nothing wrong with students being at each other, but when it gets beyond regular bullying, it is bad. I regret that it has been taken to the court since this matter could have been addressed in the school, but the Attorney General thinks otherwise,” Joseph Osei-Owusu said.

He expressed the belief that, although the act was condemnable, a more effective approach to address the situation would have been to counsel both the victim and the perpetrator, allowing them to focus on their studies and future prospects.

The individual responsible for the assault, who forcefully slammed his colleague’s head against a bunk bed causing swelling, was brought before the court late last week. As a consequence of his actions, he was expelled from the school and would only be permitted to write his WASSCE exams under the supervision of WAEC.

The Ghana Education Service, the Ministry of Education, and other relevant stakeholders took the matter seriously once the video of the incident went viral on social media.

    Police assault in Ghana

In March 2019, a distressing incident occurred in Accra Central, where three journalists from the Ghanaian Times newspaper were subjected to assault by 10 police officers. The assault took place as the journalists were filming the police officers’ wrong practices.

The journalists had captured on camera a traffic offence and an accident involving a police officer using an unregistered motorcycle. The police officers became agitated and unhappy that the journalists were attempting to document the accident.

As a result, the police officers launched a physical attack on the journalists, causing severe injuries. Malik Sullemana, a court reporter, Raissa Sambou, a general reporter, and Salifu Abdul Rahman, an assistant editor, bore the brunt of the officers’ brute force. Two of them had to be taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

  • Adisco Housemasters walk around with cutlasses for fear of student attack – Parent

Adisco Housemasters walk around with cutlasses for fear of student attack – Parent

Amidst investigations into a recent assault by a final year student against a colleague in Quaque House, it has emerged that Adisadel College in the Central Region is in a state of mayhem as authorities have lost control over the students.

Currently, Housemasters of the school carry along weapons such as cutlass, whenever they get to campus, according to a concerned parent who enrolled his son in the second cycle institution in 2021.

In an interview on CitiFM, the anonymous male parent cited a teacher of the school as his source of information. He noted that Housemasters do so as a form of protection against the hostile students. This, he says has been happening for at least two years.

“So the teacher told me even the Senior House master when they are walking they walk with a cutlass. The House masters while walking on campus, some of them put some gadgets on them because they are scared of the students. Because they can be attacked,” he said.

He stressed: “I don’t know what is going on at that school. It is so terrible. Law and order has broken down in the school completely.”

The aggrieved parent used the opportunity to also highlight the brutality meted against his son.

He recounted the period when his ward was tasked by a group of seniors to purchase 20 sachets of water with 50 pesewas. Failing to execute the task, the young boy was pounced upon and beaten.

“They will use the belt and hook. When they are coming, they come in a group like 8, 10, 20. So when they come, you can’t do anything. So they will be beating you from any angle.

They gave my boy 50 pesewas to go and buy water about 20 sachets for the seniors and he said I don’t have anything on me. How can I use 50 pesewas to buy 20 sachets of water. That was the only thing he told them. How they beat my boy. I was so mad. That is why I called the master,” he bitterly narrated.

According to the parent, he has on several occasions informed school authorities of the reports he receives from his son, however, their response remains ” the students – that is how they have been behaving.”

He noted that he has not been able to raise the issue during a Parent and Teachers Association (PTA) meeting due to the track system.

“Normally because of the system they are running, my boy is in the house now and they are in school, so sometimes, the PTA will come on while the guys are in house. I try to communicate with the Headmaster and the assistant Headmaster. You will say it and they will say the students that is how they have been behaving.”

The parent noted that he was been compiling the relevant evidence to provide the Ghana Education Service.

His plea is “I want that thing to be stopped” as “the bullying is getting out of hand in Adisadel College.”

“The victim in the incident will be suspended and will write his exams with parental escort,” management is said to have stated in a tweet.

For some social media users, they are unable to fathom the reason behind the victim’s suspension from the school.

In a video gone viral, a student in his final year held unto his junior in a Nelson hold position. The senior placed his arms under his junior’s arms while clasping his hands behind the junior’s head.

He then slammed the junior’s head to a metallic bed, causing part of his head to swell and bleed.

The unfortunate incident happened on the 30th June, 2023 in Quaque house.

Pending final decision of Board of Governors and Ghana Education Service (GES), management of Adisadel College decided to outrightly dismissed the culprit who will have to write his exams at West African Examination Council (WAEC).

Punish headmasters, headmistresses for allowing bullying in schools – Prof Adei

Former rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Professor Stephen Adei, has called on relevant stakeholders in the education sector to hold headmasters and headmistresses responsible for bullying happening in schools.

His comment comes in the wake of a horrifying assault that took place at Adisadel College where a form three student bullied a junior.

The unfortunate incident happened on 30th June, 2023 in Quaque house. In a viral video, the culprit was sighted hitting the head of the victim on a metal bed. The victim suffered a cut and bled. It is unknown the genesis of the incident.

Reacting to the incident, Prof Adei called for the dismissal of heads of schools under who tutelage such unfortunate incidents happen.

According to him, only severe sanctions meted to those in authority can finally rid the canker in the bud.

Speaking on JoyNews on Tuesday, July 25, he said: “I believe it depends on the educational authorities. The victims must know that they are totally protected and then it will not happen.

“This idea of he is a child playing, forgive them, warn them – no! Nobody has the right of hurting another person just because he is younger than you. If we don’t allow it in our homes, we should not allow it in the schools.

“The head teachers condone it. I believe the protection has to come from management and I believe that when we start punishing the head mistresses and head teachers for allowing it, because they know it happens. They can’t say it doesn’t happen.”

Management of Adisadel College has imposed sanctions on a number of students involved in the assault.

Pending final decision of Board of Governors and Ghana Education Service (GES), management of Adisal College has outrightly dismissed the culprit and will have to write his exams at West African Examination Council (WAEC).

  • Tennis star, Nick Kyrgios escapes conviction after admitting to assaulting ex-girlfriend

Tennis star, Nick Kyrgios escapes conviction after admitting to assaulting ex-girlfriend

Tennis player Nick Kyrgios from Australia has admitted to assaulting an ex-girlfriend but has escaped punishment.

The 27-year-old entered a guilty plea in a Canberra court after his attorneys were unsuccessful in getting the charge dropped due to his mental health.

During a quarrel in Canberra in 2021, Mr. Kyrgios pushed Chiara Passari onto the sidewalk, the court heard.

When sparing him a criminal record, the magistrate referred to the incident as “a single act of stupidity or frustration.”

In a statement following the decision, Mr. Kyrgios expressed his appreciation to the court for dismissing the charges without finding him guilty.

“I was not in good place when this happened and I reacted to a difficult situation in a way I deeply regret,” he said.

“I know it wasn’t OK and I’m sincerely sorry for the hurt I caused.”

Agreed facts tendered to the court say Mr Kyrgios pushed Ms Passari after she stopped his car from driving away while they were arguing on 10 January 2021.

Ms Passari reported the incident to police the next month but did not make a formal complaint. The couple reconciled and resumed a relationship, but after they broke up, Ms Passari made a formal complaint in December 2021.

Mr Kyrgios’ lawyer argued his client had been trying to de-escalate the fight by calling an Uber and had repeatedly tried to “lawfully” move Ms Passari away from the car.

“It is in that context and the frustration that resulted, that my client reacted and the offence occurred,” Michael Kukulies-Smith said.

The court heard Mr Kyrgios had sworn at Ms Passari and told her to go away. He then put his hands on her hips and moved her an arms length from the door, but Ms Passari stepped back.

The tennis star then said: “I’m serious. I’m going to…” before pushing Ms Passari in the shoulder, causing her to fall.

According to the court, Ms Passari felt some pain and later noticed grazing on her knee.

The court heard Mr Kyrgios apologised the next day—an act that showed he accepted responsibility for his actions, his lawyer said.

Mr Kukulies-Smith also told the court on Friday there was: “a relationship between the mental health and the offending – even though he no longer suffers it to the same extent today.”

Mr Kyrgios’ psychologist, Sam Borenstein, told the court the tennis player’s mental illness was “recurrent” and he had suffered from thoughts of self harm – but his condition had been improving.

When sentencing Mr Kygrios, Magistrate Beth Campbell said he had been “a young man trying to extricate himself from a heighted emotional situation”.

“You acted in the heat of the moment,” she said.

“I am dealing with you in the same way I would deal with any young man in this court. You are a young man who happens to hit a tennis ball particularly well.”

She told Mr Kyrgios that references from family showed he had a lot of “love and support” around him.

The tennis player arrived at court on Friday on crutches following recent knee surgery. An injury forced him to withdraw from the Australian Open last month.

  • Authorities launch investigation after video shows deputies beating Black detainee

A Georgia sheriff’s office has come under fire over the brutal beating of a Black detainee.

The incident reportedly took place on Sept. 3 in Camden County, Georgia, where 41-year-old Jarrett Hobbs was arrested for non-violent offenses, including speeding, driving with a suspended/revoked license, and possession of a controlled substance.

Weeks after the arrest, videos from the Camden County Jail surfaced on social media; they showed five sheriff’s office employees beating Hobbs in a holding cell before dragging him into the hallway, where they appear to strike him with their knees.

According to the New York Times, an officer testified that Hobbs was kicking his cell door before the beating took place, and allegedly refused to comply with orders to stop.

Following the attack, officers placed the North Carolina resident in solitary confinement and charged him with aggravated battery, simple assault, and obstruction of law enforcement officers.

Harry Daniels, one of the attorneys representing Hobbs, said the officers’ actions were “inexcusable,” and is now calling for criminal charges.

“Mr. Hobbs entered the Camden County Jail suffering a psychological episode and asking to be placed in protective confinement. But instead of protecting him, these deputies jumped him and beat and kicked him mercilessly like a gang of dangerous thugs,” Daniels wrote in a statement, adding that the officers also ripped a loc out of Hobbs’ scalp. “This wasn’t some arrest that got out of hand or a judgment call made out of fear for your life. This was targeted gang violence pure and simple. It just so happens that the gang members were wearing badges and we’re calling on the District Attorney to bring charges immediately.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations confirmed it is looking into the incident, while the Camden County Sheriff’s office conducts an internal investigation.

The sheriff’s office has not identified the five officers in the video, but said they have each been placed on administrative duty.

“This was done so they would be readily available for interviews by the investigators conducting the investigation,” Captain James L. Bruce told FOX 5.

  • Trey Songz denies allegedly punching woman at New York City bowling alley

Trey Songz can’t seem to stay out of legal trouble.

Just a few weeks after a rape civil case against the R&B singer was dismissed after the statue of limitations expired on the allegations, Songz now faces assault charges for allegedly punching a woman at a New York City bowling alley last month.

TMZ reports an employee of the bowling alley has accused the singer-songwriter of committing a brutal attack. The woman claims the incident took place in one of the bathrooms at the venue, where Songz allegedly punched her repeatedly and dragged her by her hair. The victim was later taken to a local hospital to be treated for her visible injuries.

Though authorities have not yet confirmed a possible motive behind the alleged attack, Songz’s attorney, Mitchell Schuster, maintains his client is innocent.

“A source close to the investigation informs us that TS has been cooperative with authorities and expects that when all the evidence is reviewed, he will be exonerated,” Schuster told TMZ. “This is another instance where those involved try to blame the celebrity with hopes of getting fame or riches.”

The lawsuit is the latest legal hurdle for Songz, who earlier this month dodged the aforementioned civil rape case after his legal team determined the statute of limitations had run out before the anonymous woman, identified only as Jane Doe, filed the complaint. The lawsuit was filed back in February this year, with Doe seeking $20 million in damages because he allegedly became a “savage rapist” in March, 2016 following their consensual relationship.

In the suit, the woman claimed that she attended a party at Songz’s home, where he anally raped her after she said she did not want to have anal sex.

She allegedly begged him to stop throughout the incident, and alleged that she later went to a nearby hospital, and an examination found there was “severe anal tearing that could require surgery.”

German footballer Jerome Boateng was ordered to pay a fine of €1.2 million ($1.17 million) on Wednesday, after a German court upheld his conviction of assaulting his former girlfriend in 2018.

Boateng was initially sentenced to a fine of €1.8 million in 2021. He had denied the accusation and appealed the sentence.

The Munich court confirmed he was guilty of the assault on Wednesday, but his fine was reduced in line with the defendant’s drop in net income since the original sentence.

The prosecution had sought an 18-month suspended prison sentence, the defense had argued for acquittal.

A further appeal is still possible, but the process must begin within a week.

    What happened during the assault?

The assault for which Boateng has been convicted took place on a luxury holiday in the Caribbean with his former girlfriend, following Germany’s knock-out of the 2018 World Cup’s group stage.

She accused the footballer of punching her during an argument, causing her to momentarily lose her breath. The court on Wednesday said it considered this claim accurate.

“To the court’s conviction, the accused threw a cooler bag in the direction of the co-accuser causing them pain during an argument on a holiday visit to the Caribbean. In the further course of this evening, the accused caused an eye injury to the co-accuser during a physical altercation and caused further injuries. In these instances, the co-accuser was also insulted,” the court ruling read.

In Boateng’s favor, the court pointed to his clean past criminal record and the fact that the incident took place some time ago.

The couple share two twin daughters.

Boateng was part of the German football team which played in the 2014 World Cup, which Germany won, and the 2018 World Cup.

Boateng’s football career thrived for a decade with the German Bayern Munich club, before he moved to the French club Lyon in 2021.

  • Man who assaulted his ex jailed for six years

A man accused of tying up and pouring boiling water over his ex in a “horrific and pre-meditated” attack has been jailed for six years by the Sheffield Crown Court.

Reports have it that Sam Wild, 38, sent his victim to a hotel after having drinks together in Sheffield. He then tricked her into taking her clothes off.

He then carried on the pretence and tied her up before pouring boiling water over her face and body, leaving her scarred for life.

The unnamed woman told police she was too scared to refuse Sam sex.

Wild in previous court hearings pleaded guilty to Section 18 assault – wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Wild fled the hotel, near the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield, leaving his victim tied up and screaming in pain.

She was finally able to free herself and alert hotel staff, who called police.

Wild and his victim had previously been in a relationship but were separated at the time the ‘horrific and pre-meditated’ attack took place, police said.

Speaking after sentencing, PC Jane Guest, from South Yorkshire Police, said: “Wild’s victim suffered significant and extensive burn injuries to her face and body – both first and second degree.

“She was in the specialist burns unit for weeks and even now, continues to receive treatment.

“She has demonstrated exceptional strength, not just in her physical recovery, but in her support of our investigation.

“Her victim statement was read aloud in court, which was incredibly powerful and deeply upsetting.

“She will be scarred for life by Wild, not just physically but psychologically too.

“To subject another person to such agonising pain and harm is incomprehensible and no jail sentence can ever undo the damage caused by Wild’s violence.

“I truly hope that with the conclusion of proceedings this week and the lifetime restraining order granted against Wild, the victim feels her journey towards recovery has taken another shift forward.”

  • Rapper A$AP Rocky denies shooting charges

Rapper A$AP Rocky has pleaded not guilty to two charges of assault with a firearm in connection with a shooting in Hollywood last November.

The star, real name Rakim Mayers, is alleged to have pointed the gun at a former friend during an argument.

Prosecutors say he later fired the weapon twice in the direction of the victim, who sustained a minor injury.

The 33-year-old, who has had two US number one albums, could face up to nine years in prison if found guilty.

The rapper, who had a baby with singer Rihanna in May, appeared in court in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

The star was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport in April, as he returned from a holiday with Rihanna. He was released three hours later – after posting bail of $550,000 (£421,000).

Terell Ephron, who is part of the A$AP Mob hip-hop collective, identified himself as the victim and took legal action against his former friend last week – alleging assault and battery, negligence and emotional distress.

Mr Ephron, known as A$AP Relli, alleged that Mr Mayers had “lured” him to an obscure location in Hollywood to discuss a disagreement.

The lawsuit claims that, after a verbal altercation, Mr Mayers “pulled out a handgun and purposefully pointed it in the direction of [Mr Ephron] and fired multiple shots”.

Mr Ephron was “struck by bullet projectile/fragments” in his left hand and required medical attention, according to the court papers. He is seeking at least $25,000 (£20,750) in damages.

At Wednesday’s hearing, judge Victoria B Wilson put a restraining order in place, ordering Mr Mayers to stay 100 yards (91m) away from Mr Ephron at all times, and set a preliminary trial date of 2 November.

Mr Mayers was previously given a two-year suspended sentence for his role in a brawl in Stockholm in August 2019.

As A$AP Rocky, he was one of the biggest breakout stars of the 2010s, earning eight platinum singles in the US, including Wild For The Night, Everyday, LSD and A$AP Forever.

He rose to fame after being championed by Drake, and has worked with artists including Alicia Keys, Lana Del Rey, Skepta, Selena Gomez and Kendrick Lamar.

Last year, he confirmed he was in a relationship with Rihanna, calling her the “love of my life” and “the one”.

A former National Security Minister and Information Minister, Kofi Totobi Quakyi, has taken a swipe at the National Security and Information Minister over the dismissal of the security operative who assaulted a soldier, describing it as selective justice.

He has issued a rejoinder for Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and Mr. Albert Kan-Dapaah; current Information and National Security Ministers on the assault of the Soldier by National Security Operatives in broad daylight.
