Villa have won just two of their opening nine Premier League matches, sitting just three points above the relegation zone with only Wolves having scoring fewer than their goal tally of seven.
That has resulted in boss Gerrard coming under pressure, with speculation that Villa could move on from the former Liverpool captain if results do not improve.
Potter has made it clear that the situation can change swiftly, adding that there is “always somebody under pressure” in England’s top flight.
“The margins are very small in the Premier League – I’m sure Steven will want to improve their results,” he said ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Villa on Sunday.
“If they had beaten Forest they would have gone above Liverpool so that shows you how quick things change.
“There’s always somebody under pressure in the Premier League and at the moment it’s Steven.”
Chelsea’s axing of Thomas Tuchel and appointment of Potter has resulted in a quick upturn in form, with the Blues unbeaten in his five games in charge and enjoying a four-match winning streak.
That has come despite a “surreal” start to Potter’s stint at Stamford Bridge and the former Brighton and Hove Albion boss is adamant there is still work to do.
He added: “From the outside results are good, there are always things you can improve, but I can’t sit here and complain about anything, with the results we’ve had.
“It was a really surreal start with the Queen’s death, games being called off, not really knowing the players but I’ve got to credit the players – they have been really open and it has gone well.
“We haven’t played that many games in the league, there are so many games to go.”
The transfer market will close until January if Premier League clubs don’t make any new signings by Thursday at 11 p.m. (BST).
The likes of Chelsea and Manchester United are expected to be busy as they desperately try to get more deals over the line.
And at the other end of the table, teams like Evertonand Aston Villa are on the lookout for reinforcements after poor starts to the season.

Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign Brazil centre-back Diego Carlos from Sevilla for £26m.
The 29-year-old, who Newcastle United tried to sign in January, will travel to England on Thursday for a medical and to finalise personal terms.
He would be Villa’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of Boubacar Kamara from Marseille on a free transfer.
Carlos played six times at last year’s Tokyo Olympics where Brazil won gold.
“Sevilla FC would like to thank the player for his work during all these years in Seville and wishes him the best of luck in his new journey,” a statement from the La Liga club read.
Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard recently confirmed central defender Ezri Konsa would miss the start of the upcoming season because of a knee injury.
Villa, who finished 14th in the Premier League last season, also completed a deal for Philippe Coutinho to join on a four-year contract from Barcelona earlier in May.
Liverpool maintained the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester City as they survived an early scare to come from behind and win at Aston Villa.
Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered a shock after only three minutes when Douglas Luiz bundled home after Liverpool keeper Alisson failed to hold his header.
Liverpool were on terms within three minutes when Joel Matip scored following a goalmouth scramble and the sides then exchanged chances before Sadio Mane put the visitors ahead with a superb angled header from Luis Diaz’s cross in the 65th minute.
The win means Liverpool now lie second only on goal difference before City’s visit to Wolves on Wednesday.
Former Liverpool striker Danny Ings wasted opportunities to equalise and inflict a blow to his old club’s hopes of winning a historic quadruple – although the Reds did suffer an injury setback when influential midfielder Fabinho went off in the first half with a hamstring problem that must make him doubtful for Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.
Liverpool pass stern Villa test
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp made five changes from the side that drew with Spurs at Anfield on Saturday, resting tired legs and freshening things up with Saturday’s Wembley showpiece in mind.
It was a ploy that worked in the end, although Liverpool were set back on their heels when they were punished for a slow start as Villa went ahead.
Liverpool showed their character and the threat they carry to reply instantly and, while this was not a particularly assured performance, the only thing that matters at this stage is the final result, and this was a case of job done.
The injury to Fabinho will be a serious worry to Klopp with FA Cup and Champions League finals on the horizon but he will hope the Brazilian’s swift removal in the first half will limit the damage.
Once again January signing Diaz was a key figure, a danger all night and the provider of the cross that brought Mane’s decisive header. The Colombian’s signing has proved to be a masterstroke.
Now the scenery switches to Molineux on Wednesday, where leaders City face Wolves, who still have European aspirations of their own.
Pep Guardiola’s side still have that advantage on goal difference but Liverpool’s win at least ensures they stay right on Manchester City’s shoulders as the season reaches its climax.
Gerrard with work to do
Aston Villa will finish the season in a comfortable mid-table position but so much of this term has been about manager Steven Gerrard discovering what he has at his disposal then laying the groundwork for next season.
He has talent in the shape of Emiliano Buendia but big decisions remain about whether he will strengthen in defence – where captain Tyrone Mings still looks suspect – and on the possibility of a permanent deal for his former Liverpool colleague Philippe Coutinho.
The Brazilian, on loan from Barcelona, only showed his ability in flashes here and it was clear the Villa fans felt more of a surge of hope when he was replaced by Buendia.
Gerrard certainly has something to work with but a lot needs to be done and he is a driven personality who will not want to cruise along in mid-table.
Villa, and Ings in particular, had plenty of opportunities to take advantage of some uncharacteristic uncertainty in the visitors’ defence, with keeper Alisson fortunate to get away with one or two moments of poor judgement – although he then made a crucial save from the striker when he broke clear with a chance to equalise.
The end of the season will be the end of Gerrard’s fact-finding mission and the serious reconstruction will begin at Villa Park.
The English Premier League is celebrating former Black Stars player, Sulley Muntari for his incredible finish against Aston Villa during the 2007/2008 season.
The player was a regular starter for the Portsmouth team that season, wearing the number 11 Jersey.
In this particular game, which was on December 8, 2007, Muntari scored a braceall from outside the 18-yard box.
The Premier League is celebrating the second goal which was scored in the 61st minute of the game which gave Portsmouth a 3-0 lead over Aston Villa.
Sulley Muntari featured for Portsmouth only in the 2007/2008 Premier League season, playing 29 games and being involved in seven goals scoring four goals and providing three assists.

Chelsea returned to Premier League action by coming from behind to beat relegation-threatened Aston Villa and strengthen their bid for a top-four finish.
The Blues dominated the first half but fell behind when Kepa failed to hold Anwar El Ghazi’s shot and Kortney Hause was on hand to bundle in.
Chelsea fought back after the break and turned the game on its head with two goals in as many minutes.
First, substitute Christian Pulisic smashed Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross into the roof of the net at the far post before Olivier Giroud drove in from 15 yards with the help of a slight deflection.
The win means fourth-placed Chelsea restored their five-point advantage over Manchester United and Wolves, who are fifth and sixth respectively.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone, one point from safety after taking one point from their first two games back following the resumption of the Premier League.
Chelsea pick up from where they left off
The suspension of the season had perhaps come at a frustrating time for Chelsea. They had just beaten Liverpool 2-0 in the FA Cup fifth round and then thrashed Everton 4-0 in the league.
But, 105 days on from that win against the Toffees, Chelsea looked fresh and motivated from the outset against a Villa side fighting for survival.
The only concern, however, was their inability to turn chances into goals – particularly in the first half.
Mason Mount saw a powerful strike kept out by Villa keeper Orjan Nyland before Ruben Loftus-Cheek, making a welcome return to the side after a year out with injury, just failed to turn home a teasing ball across the face of goal.
It could have proved costly, particularly when Villa scored from only their second shot on target to take the lead.
In the end Chelsea got the job done but, with 19 attempts on goal, they should perhaps have won by a more comfortable margin.
The signing of Timo Werner for next season will hopefully address Chelsea’s struggles to make the most of their opportunities but for now, Frank Lampard will hope his current forwards will use the striker’s impending arrival as motivation to be more clinical in the end-of-season run-in.
A tough return but some hope for Villa
It has been a tough return to Premier League action for Aston Villa, who resumed their survival bid against two opponents fighting to secure European football next season.
They were fortunate to pick up a point against Sheffield United, with goalline technology failing to register a goal for the Blades.
But despite seeing their winless run in the Premier League extended to six games, there are some signs of encouragement for Villa.
They competed well against high-flying Sheffield United and against Chelsea they started with a good shape and discipline that initially served to frustrate their opponents, although seemingly lacked a Plan B and never looked like getting back into the game once they fell behind.
Jack Grealish has also continued to be an influential and dangerous presence in their team. He was involved in the move that led to their goal against Chelsea and if he can continue to shine in midfield, then Dean Smith’s side still have a fighting chance of survival.
