  • ‘We’ve waited for that one’ – Arsenal boss on Partey’s goal vs Tottenham

After his stunning strike against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, claims that they have been waiting to see Thomas Partey produce a long-range goal in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old scored two headers for Arsenal in the Premier League last season. He is known for hitting stunning long-range goals.

But on Saturday at noon, Partey finally received a trademark strike.
After 20 minutes of play, he produced an incredible first-time finish into the top corner to break the scoreless tie.

The former Atletico Madrid man was an imposing figure as Arsenal ran out 3-1 victors, and Arteta expressed his delight at witnessing Partey end his open-play hoodoo.

“We have been waiting for that one! For what he has been through I am so happy for him,” the Gunners boss told BT Sport after the game.

  • Thomas Partey expected to make injury return for Arsenal against Tottenham

Thomas Partey, a star for Ghana, might suit up for Arsenal against Tottenham Hotspurs in the North London derby on Saturday.

Due to an injury, Partey was unable to participate in the Black Stars’ friendly matches against Brazil and Nicaragua.

The midfielder, who just just overcame a thigh issue, was set to play against Brazil last Friday but was taken off the pitch during warmups after feeling uneasy.

The former star of Atletico Madrid was given approval to leave the Ghanaian camp in France for more evaluation.

Footballghana.com understands the Gunners are hopeful Partey will be fit in time for the north London derby this weekend after assessing the player.

Partey has featured four times this season for the Premier League giants.

  • Football world turns heat on Atletico Madrid supporters after racism against Real Madrid’s Brazil players

Football fans across the world have condemned the racist chants targeted at Real Madrid’s Brazilian players by fans of Atletico Madrid.

In the Madrid derby played on Sunday, September 18, 2022, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes, and Eder Militao were racially abused by fans of Atletico Madrid.

In and outside the Wanda Metropolitano which is Atletico’s home, videos of fans hurling monkey chants at the Brazilian players trended on social media.

Hundreds of Atletico supporters could be heard singing “Vinicius, you are a monkey, you are a monkey”.

Local media also reported that monkey noises and chants of “Vinicius, die” were heard throughout the game.

The latest racism act from the Atletico Madrid fans follows a video in which Vinicius spoke out against racism after players of Real Mallorca hit out at him for dancing and showboating during a game.

As the conversations waged, football agent Pedro Bravo, a guest on a Spanish TV show made racist remarks referring to Vinicius as “monkeying around”, and invited him to leave the dancing to the “Sambadrome”.

In the game, Real Madrid defeated Atletico 2-1. Rodrygo shot Madrid in the lead inside 18 minutes before Valverde added the second. Hermoso grabbed the consolation for Atletico.

  • Real Madrid beat Atletico to continue impressive start

Real Madrid on Sunday beat Atletico Madrid in a lively derby to continue their undoubted dominance since the start of their La Liga title defence.

Real Madrid won the game by 2 goals to one.

Rodrygo gave Real the opener with a half-volley from Aurelien Tchouameni’s audacious scooped ball over the top.

They doubled their lead when Vinicius Jr’s shot hit the post with Federico Valverde scoring the rebound.

Mario Hermoso briefly gave Atletico hope with a goal but then all but removed it with a late red card.

The substitute scored with his shoulder with seven minutes to go after Thibaut Courtois had missed a corner from Antoine Griezmann, making his first start of the season for Atletico.

But Hermoso was shown a yellow card for pushing Dani Carvajal and two minutes later picked up a second for shoving Dani Ceballos as they waited for a Griezmann corner.

However, the fixture was marred by what appeared to be racist chants aimed at Real’s Brazilian forward Vinicius outside the stadium beforehand, which followed criticism of his dancing goal celebrations and a debate over whether that criticism was racist.

Some fans also reportedly threw objects at Vinicius after a Real goal and aimed further songs at him in the closing stages.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Real have won all six games, putting them two points clear of Barcelona at the top. Atletico are seventh.

Real last won their opening six games in 1987-88.

  • Atletico Madrid plotting to re-sign Thomas Partey from Arsenal? – Reports

Arsenal midfielder, Thomas Partey, could be heading back to Atletico Madrid according to reports.

The Ghana midfielder joined the Premier League giants from the La Liga side last summer.

The Gunners triggered Partey’s €50m release clause on the transfer deadline day.

However, the 27-year-old’s journey at the club has been soiled with injuries since switching to the Emirates.

A report by Todofichajes says Diego Simeone is planning to launch a two-prong attack on Arsenal with Real Madrid loanee, Dani Caballos, the other player on his radar.

Partey has managed just 20 league appearances, starting 15 of them this season but without a goal, and sources have also claimed that the midfielder could be making a return to his former club, Atletico.

Partey was in action on Thursday as Arsenal failed to progress to the finals of the Europa League against Villarreal.

  • Atletico Madrid identify Ghanas Baba Mohammed as Parteys replacement

Ghana midfielder Baba Iddrisu Mohammed has become a prime target for Atletico Madrid as the LaLiga giants aim to quickly replace Thomas Partey, GHANASoccernet.com can exclusively report.

Partey left the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium outfit to join Arsenal after the Gunners paid his €50 million release clause on transfer deadline day.

The Rojiblancos are a little light in midfield following the exit of the Ghana international.

Atlético Madrid have signed Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira but Diego Simeone is said to be unhappy with his midfield options.

The capital-based side have a 30-day period to sign a domestic replacement.

This is in accordance with LaLiga Santander rules where the club is granted a period of 30 days to sign a player from a team within Spain.

And reports from the Spanish capital indicate that Atlético Madrid have identified Real Mallorca king-pin Baba Mohammed as a replacement for his compatriot.

Mohammed had a breakthrough season with Real Mallorca in the top-flight last term.

He missed just two games out of the 38 round of matches as the club failed to retain their league status.

The 24-year-old has begun the Segunda Division strongly, making 4 appearances to help place the side in 7th position after 4 round of games.

Should the transfer materialized, Mohammed will miss the first half of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League as Atlético Madrid submitted their squad-list on Tuesday, October 6.

  • Thomas Partey cameos as Atletico make flying start in La Liga

Ghana star Thomas Partey made a substitute appearance in Atletico Madrid’s first game of the season on Sunday.

The midfielder came on in the second half and helped the team make a flying start as they claimed a 6-1 victory against Granada at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Luis Suarez scored a brace on his debut with Diego Costa, Marcos Llorente, Joao Felix and Angel Correa all on target.

Partey, who has been linked with a move this summer, came on in the 71st minute for Yannick Carrasco with Atleti leading 3-0.

He picked up a yellow card for a bad challenge four minutes after coming on.

But he comported himself, afterwards and contributed to other goals.

Partey has been linked Arsenal but the Gunners are struggling to fund the transfer. Atleti insists Partey will only leave if Arsenal meets his 50 million euros release clause.

  • Partey, Torreira swap deal unlikely Reports

Arsenal midfielder, Lucas Torreira, is close to joining Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid, according to reports in his native Uruguay.

Arsenal and Atletico are said to be in advanced stages in their negotiations over the 24 year old.

Arsenal were interested in facilitating a player-plus-cash deal involving Torreira for Atleti midfielder Thomas Partey.

But with Atletico only interested in signing Torreira on loan, that deal looks very unlikely.

Partey has been linked with Arsenal throughout the summer window but the Gunners have not been prepared to pay his £45m release clause.

The Ghana international is still yet to sign a new contract extension with Atletico which will see a significant rise in his release clause.

The position of Atletico on the future of Partey remains unchanged, and Arsenal will have to trigger his release clause if they are to have any chance of signing him.

  • Atletico Madrid to replace Thomas Partey with Elisha Owusu

Spanish top-flight club, Atletico Madrid is planning to replace key player, Thomas Partey with French-born Ghanaian, Elisha Owusu as EPL side, Arsenal continue the chase for his signature.

Owusu, who joined KAA Gent from Lyon and has been in tremendous form is being courted by the Spanish team as a fine replacement for the newly appointed deputy captain of the Ghana Black Stars, Partey.

The KAA Gent in-form defensive midfielder would switch to play under Coach Diego Simeon in one of the biggest European Leagues in the World, La liga if both parties meet the terms of condition.

The 22-year old budding talent Owusu, made 27 appearances for KAA Gent in the 2019/2020 Belgian topflight.

Owusu has a contract with KAA Gent until 2023.

  • Atletico’s fear over Partey, Oblak

Atletico Madrid are desperate to keep their squad together this summer but Diego Simeone fears losing top stars Thomas Partey or Jan Oblak if their attractive buyout clauses are met, sources have told ESPN.

The club are in a more delicate financial situation than most amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the coach and his team taking a temporary 70% pay cut in April, and CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin said this week they’ll “make three or four changes at most” this summer.

Atletico’s real worry, though, is having to replace, or cope without, Partey – available for €50m and heavily linked with Arsenal – or Oblak, whose €120m clause hasn’t stopped Chelsea from taking an interest after losing faith in Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Atletico have suffered in recent years after setting affordable buyout clauses which big clubs have been happy to meet. A year ago, they lost the spine of the team — Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona for €120m, Rodri to Manchester City for €70m and Lucas Hernandez to Bayern for €80m — in one transfer window.

Their stance this summer is that no key player will be sold for less than his release clause, although that would be tested by a serious cash offer or a reasonable player exchange.

  • ‘Ramos is a rock’ – Modric hails Real Madrid team-mate as world’s best defender

The Croatian midfielder spoke warmly of Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema after winning another La Liga title with the capital club Luka Modric has described Sergio Ramos as a “phenomenon” and says the Real Madrid captain is the best defender in the world.

Ramos led Madrid to his fifth La Liga title, scoring 11 times in the top flight this season – a record for a defender in the 21st century.

The 34-year-old has won 22 trophies with Los Blancos since joining from Sevilla in 2005 and remains integral to Zinedine Zidane’s plans, with many suggesting he could have been in the running for the Ballon d’Or this year before the 2020 award was cancelled.

Modric, who has become a good friend of Ramos since moving to the Spanish capital in 2012, says there can be no doubting his quality.

“My brother Sergio is a phenomenon,” he told Sportske Novosti. “And I’m not just saying that because in eight years we’ve created a really special relationship, we hang out as families, go on holiday together, or because we’ve had fantastic footballing experiences and successes together.

“Ramos is a 34-year-old rock, a top-level competitor, and when you watch him working on himself, it’s clear how dedicated he is and how hungry he is for success. He’s a team leader and the best defender in the world.”

Madrid’s title triumph was also inspired by the form of Karim Benzema, who scored 21 goals this season, and Modric believes he is now starting to get the recognition he deserves.

“Now, everyone has finally realised what we players have known for a long time,” he said. “Benzema is a top striker who is a pleasure to play with. His understanding of the game, movement, disrupting the balance of the opposition defence, is something special.

“Benzema has always done a great job for the team and I am just glad that he has now experienced a general standing ovation and great satisfaction from people recognising his class.”

Madrid trailed Barca at the top of the table when La Liga was suspended in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, but a run of 10 wins in a row and a draw with Leganes on the final day saw them finish five points clear.

Modric felt there were signs when the team returned to training that they had a good chance of overhauling Barca.

Ramos dedicates title to Real Madrid fans who suffered during coronavirus lockdown “I’ve already won 16 trophies at Real, four Champions Leagues, but this La Liga title made me especially happy,” he added.

“We definitely should have had more domestic titles because we threw away some championships in a very clumsy way.

“While we were shut in our homes, we all trained. I was in contact with team-mates and noticed everyone was working with extra motivation. When we finally got back to training together, I felt an even stronger connection between the players, enjoying being together again and in full swing.”

  • Thomas Partey features as Atlético Madrid beat Real Betis

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey played throttle as Atlético Madrid defeated Real Betis 1-0 in LaLiga on Saturday.

Diego Costa’s lone goal was enough to seal all three points for 10-man Atleti at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Diego Simeone’s side looked destined to hold on for a draw after Mario Hermoso was shown a straight red card for a foul on Loren Moron, but substitute Costa steered home Yannick Carrasco’s free-kick in the 74th minute to secure a top-four finish for Los Rojiblancos.

After seeing goals for Angel Correa and Alvaro Morata overturned by VAR, there were concerns Costa’s header would be ruled out during a lengthy check for handball.

However, the goal was allowed to stand, ensuring Atleti will return to European football’s top table in 2020-21.

Betis, playing for the first time since it was announced Manuel Pellegrini will be their new head coach next season, pushed for the equaliser but Atleti held firm.

Atlético Madrid are now 3rd on the league table with 66 points after 36 matches played thus far.

  • Messi scores 700th goal with Panenka against Atletico Madrid

Lionel Messi scored the 700th goal of his career with a Panenka penalty in Barcelona’s La Liga draw with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

The Spanish giants’ all-time top scorer hit the landmark goal for club and country by gently chipping the ball into the net as Jan Oblak dived the wrong way.

The goal had put Barcelona 2-1 up but Atletico hit back to draw 2-2.

Barca remain second, one point behind Real Madrid, who have a game in hand.

Messi’s penalty was also his 630th goal in his 724th appearance for the club.

The Argentina star played a part in the opener for Barcelona when his whipped corner hit Diego Costa and deflected into the back of the net.

Former Chelsea striker Costa quickly had the chance to make amends when Atletico were awarded a penalty after Yannick Carrasco was fouled inside the box.

Costa stepped up to take the spot kick only to see it saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but it had to be retaken because the Barcelona goalkeeper had come off his line early. Saul Niguez took the second penalty and sent Ter Stegen the wrong way.

Messi restored Barcelona’s lead and reached his career milestone with his cheeky Panenka – named after Antonin Panenka’s famous penalty for Czechoslovakia in the final of the 1976 European Championship – but Niguez equalised again with another penalty as Barca dropped points which could cost them dear in the title race.

    Messi joins 700 club

Another year, another milestone for Messi.

His 700th career goal – coming just over 14 months after netting for the 600th time for Barcelona – means he joins a select group.

According to data from Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation, Messi is now one of seven players to have reached the 700-goal mark in their career.

Czech-Austrian Josef Bican leads the way with 805 career goals, followed by Brazil legend Romario, who bagged 772, with his compatriot Pele third on 767.

Hungary legend Ferenc Puskas hit 746 goals, while former Germany striker Gerd Muller rounds out the top five with 735 goals.

Messi’s great modern goalscoring rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, is the sixth man on the list, having reached 700 career goals with a strike for Portugal in a Euro 2020 qualifier against Ukraine in October last year. He has added a further 26 goals to his tally since then.

  • Thomas Partey plays full throttle as Atletico Madrid holds Barcelona

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey lasted the entire duration as Atletico Madrid picked a point at the Camp Nou against Barcelona.

The Ghanaian was in action for Atletico Madrid during their 2-2 draw with Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

The hosts got off the perfect start. Lionel Messi’s corner was flicked on to Diego Costa who put the ball into his own net in the 11th minute.

Atletico Madrid fought back and were rewarded with a penalty that Diego Costa missed but a retake was capitalized by Saul Niguez in the 19th minute.

The two sides went into the break with one goal each.

Barcelona started quicker in the final half and were rewarded with a penalty which Messi converted in the 50th minute.

Atletico Madrid went on the offensive and earned another penalty. Saul stepped up again and found the net in the 62nd minute. The visitors held on to a draw.

Thomas Partey was solid throughout the game with some good tackling and passing.

Barcelona now have 70 points and Madrid have 59 points.

  • Can Baba or Anguissa fill Partey’s big boots at Atletico Madrid?

While the future of Thomas Partey remains uncertain, the relentless mill of transfer speculation has already begun to turn up potential replacements for the influential midfielder.

Per recent reports, the Ghana international has a contract offer from Atletico Madrid to extend his stay in the Spanish capital. However, links to North London club Arsenal persist, no doubt sparked by a statement attributed to his father in April but now fuelled by the player’s own reticence toward signing the extension.

Partey’s importance within Diego Simeone’s system has continued to grow over the last two seasons. Following the departure of long-serving captain Gabi in 2018, the 27-year-old has assumed not just the position at the base of the Atletico midfield, but also a de facto leadership role within the team.

It is a level of responsibility he has risen to and relished: he leads the team in successful dribbles per game (1.8), is third for interceptions (1.4 pg) and second for completed passes (41.0 pg) .

More important than the volume, however, is the types of passes.

Per FBref, of players who have made at least 15 starts, Partey leads Atletico for passes played into the final third (6.92 per 90), touches (70.7 per 90) and is second only to Kieran Trippier for progressive passes (7.44 per 90).

For a side that is built first and foremost to be solid defensively, he is absolutely crucial to the construction of their attacking play.

Big boots to fill then if, as is widely expected, he leaves the Metropolitano.

Two names that have been strongly linked as replacements are Real Mallorca midfielder Iddrisu Baba and Villarreal’s Andre Zambo Anguissa, who is on loan from English side Fulham. While their styles are somewhat contrasting, they both have certain merits that make them interesting considerations for Atletico.

There are, of course, a few obvious similarities between Baba and Partey.

Both are Ghana internationals and, like his older compatriot did six years ago, the 24-year-old Baba is receiving a footballing education at RCD Mallorca.

That is not all he has going for him, however.

Even within the more humble stylings of Mallorca’s game, Baba asserts similar influence on their passing game. He is second in the club for passes into the final third (3.02 per 90) and second for touches (50.4 per 90).

While of players at the club who have at least 15 starts, Baba ranks fourth for progressive passes per 90, he does not carry the responsibility in terms of starting attacks that Partey does. That brief falls to the experienced Salva Sevilla; Baba is tasked with winning the ball, keeping it simple and establishing possession in the centre of the pitch.

Capped by Ghana for the first time last November, he could realistically play as a foil for a player like Partey, allowing his more attacking instincts to flourish. The self-effacing nature of his game is one that has reportedly attracted attention in the past from Real Madrid, interest which forced Mallorca to offer the player two contract extensions in 20 days in July 2019.

There will no doubt be concerns as to whether he can offer the same incision that Partey does. However, it is worth noting that Partey himself was not a like-for-like replacement for Gabi, so a slight difference in profile need not be a deal-breaker.

The Cameroon international endured a torrid time in the Premier League with a hapless Fulham side in 2018/19, but is rebuilding his reputation at Villarreal.

His strong performances for the Yellow Submarine have seen him earmarked as a possible replacement for Partey at Atletico.

An imposing figure in midfield, Anguissa excels at carrying the ball forward. He leads Villarreal in total dribbles (69) this season, a remarkable statistic considering he plays alongside Santi Cazorla, and is fourth for progressive carries.

However, his actual work in possession is good too. He has the second-highest passing accuracy in the team, and of players who have made at least 15 starts, he is second for passing the ball into the final third.

Physically more imposing than Baba, he is however less active defensively inside his own defensive third. Typically, Anguissa, perhaps by virtue of Villarreal’s high defensive line, plays higher up the pitch, using his engine to disrupt and break up play.

Vicente Iborra plays the more disciplined defensive role alongside him in midfield, and so he has license to storm forward and apply pressure to opponents.

While it would be a great ask for him to acquire the discipline needed to provide a solid base for the team to function, it is effectively the same route to first team prominence that Partey took, morphing from an energetic box-to-box player to a more metronomic presence.

The sheer difference in playing style between the mooted replacements tells a story in itself, and is a compliment to how aptly Partey has embodied the role at Atletico.

Certainly, the club’s preference would be to retain his services.

However, if Arsenal (or indeed anyone else) activate his release clause, either of the above would make for interesting replacements, but for quite different reasons: whereas Baba would need to show more, Anguissa arguably would need to strip back.

  • Thomas Partey stars as Atletico Madrid pip Levante

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey played a pivotal role as Atletico Madrid defeated Levante on Tuesday night to strengthen their grip of third place in La Liga.

The want-away midfield ace lasted 82 minutes before he was replaced by forward Alvaro Morata as the Rojiblancos made it back to back wins to maintain their quest for a champions league spot.

Bruno Gonzalez’s 15 minute own goal was enough to secure all three points for Atletico Madrid. Marcos Llorente’s swinging cross meant for Diego Cost found the Levante defender who turned it into the wrong net.

Thomas Partey scored right after the break, but the goal was disallowed due to a previous offside.

Partey was immense in midfield, winning and distributing balls effortlessly.

The Ghana international has attracted interest from several top European clubs, with Arsenal leading the chase for his signature.

The 27-year old has refused contract extension as he desperately seeks a move away from Spain.

  • Atletico Madrid target Swiss star Denis Zakaria as Partey’s replacement

Atletico Madrid have identified Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria as a potential replacement for Arsenal target Thomas Partey.

The 27-year-old, who has a buy out clause of €50 million, has been linked with a move to Premier League side Arsenal this summer.

According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the Rojiblancos have already started talks with Zakaria’s representatives. A deal is yet to be completed.

There have been further reports that €30 million may be enough to prize Zakaria away from Germany.

Partey, however, is expected to make his next destination known by the end of the season. He has made 40 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish giants this season.

Partey has made 30 starts and three substitute outings in La Liga and the Champions League during the 2019-20 campaign.

  • Thomas Partey features in Atlético Madrid narrow win over Real Valladolid

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey was in action for Atlético Madrid in their narrow win over Real Valladolid in the Spanish LaLiga on Saturday.

The 26-year-old lasted the entire duration of the game as Atletico earned a 1-0 win at the Wanda Metropolitano courtesy a late goal from Vitolo.

The game, which was the first to be played in over three months at the stadium was preceded by several tributes to club legends, members, and supporters who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ghana international almost broke the deadlock with a 35-yard shot that Jose Antonio Caro turned away for a corner in the 80th minute.

The home side had created loads of chances before Vitolo came off the bench to replace Marcos Llorente with 17 minutes remaining, with Joao Felix and Alvaro Morata also going close.

Vitolo headed the ball just over the line after a corner from the left reached him at the far post in the 81st minute for the breakthrough.

The win lifted Los Rojiblanco to 3rd on the league table with 52 points after 30 matches played thus far.

Partey was shown a yellow card for tripping Miguel de la Fuente.

He has made 27 league appearances and scored two goals for Atlético Madrid this season.

  • Thomas Partey features as Atletico Madrid makes light work of Osasuna

Ghanaian international Thomas Partey featured for Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night as they cruised past Osasuna with an emphatic 5-0 win in the Spanish La Liga.

After failing to grab all 3 points last weekend when the 2019/2020 league season restarted, Diego Simeone’s men finally got the job done today and in fine fashion as well.

The matchday 27 clash between the two teams played at the Estadio El Sadar saw Joao Felix breaking the deadlock after 29 minutes of play when he proved clinical in front of the goal.

Despite some end to end action for the remaining minutes of the half, neither side could get on the scoresheet as the first half ended 1-0 in favour of the away team.

Atletico Madrid returned from the break and played with some swagger as they scored four times. Joao Felix found the back of the net on the 56th minute to complete his brace before making way for Thomas Partey on the 69th minute.

Later on, a goal each from Marcos Llorente, Alvaro Morata, and Yannick Carrasco added to the woes of Osasuna as they lost 5-0 at the end of the 90 minutes.

For the minutes he played, Thomas Partey looked in good form with his precise passing and good reading of the game to intercept passes.

The hardworking midfielder remains a key member of the Atletico Madrid team but looks set to switch to the English Premier League at the end of the season to play for Arsenal.

  • Atletico Madrid want Thomas Partey sold to mitigate effects of coronavirus shutdown

Part of the Atletico Madrid board want the club to sell Thomas Partey to mitigate the economic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, GHANAsoccernet.com can report.

Diego Simeone’s side are thought to be open to cashing in on the star, which could pave the way for a move to Arsenal.

The Los Rojiblancos board are ready to sacrifice the talented midfielder for economic gain after the club was hit financially due to the coronavirus shutdown.

Cadena COPE has reported that some senior figures at the club want the Ghana international sold with Arsenal ready to meet his £44.5 million evaluation so they can mitigate the economic effects of post-coronavirus crisi.

The Gunners have stepped up their effort to sign the Ghanaian star, who is facing an uncertain summer after being linked with a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano.

Arsenal have reportedly tabled a triple-your-money contract offer for the Ghana star.

Partey had been keen to stay with the Spanish giants, but given the huge sums being discussed it’s reported that he’s now considering his options.

Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain have also expressed an interest in the 27-year-old, and could be tempted to make a move.

  • Atletico Madrid striker Costa handed six-month prison sentence and fined for tax fraud

Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa has pleaded guilty to defrauding the Spanish state of more than €1 million (£813,000/$1,127,000) after failing to declare payments of over €5m earned from his 2014 move to Chelsea.

The striker was sentenced to six months in prison on Thursday, but Spanish law states that non-violent crimes with a punishment of under two years’ imprisonment can instead be resolved with a fine for first-time offenders.

In Costa’s case, the Brazil-born Spain international will fork out an additional payment of just over €500,000 on top of the missing €1m in order to fully satisfy the courts, with a failure to declare image rights also having come under the state’s microscope.

Costa left Atletico Madrid in July of 2014 after Chelsea agreed to meet the forward’s £32m ($40m) buy-out clause.

A divisive figure due to his common practice of football’s so-called dark arts, Costa won two Premier League titles and a League Cup during his time at Stamford Bridge, bagging a respectable 59 goals across 120 appearances.

His exit from the Blues came in rather acrimonious circumstances, with then head coach Antonio Conte having sent the player a text message telling him that he was no longer part of his plans for the west London club.

Costa eventually secured a deal to the Spanish capital in 2017 – although not before going into self-exile in Brazil following his spat with Conte – but he could not represent the club until the beginning of 2018 due to a FIFA-imposed transfer ban.

Despite helping Atleti to Europa League and Super Cup success in his first season back at the Wanda Metropolitano, the striker has struggled to replicate the kind of form that saw Chelsea pursue his signature in the first place. Costa has only two goals in 19 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side this term.

He might, however, have a chance to add to his tally when football returns in Spain, with La Liga set to kick off again on June 11, starting with a derby clash between Sevilla and Real Betis. Atletico currently occupy sixth place in the Spanish top tier, 13 points behind leaders Barcelona.

Partey joined Atletico as a youngster in 2012 and featured for their B side before gaining experience on loan at Mallorca and Almeria.

He has now made 174 appearances for Atletico and won the Europa League in 2018.

  • Felix is at the wrong club and working under the wrong coach – Van der Vaart

Atletico Madrid’s style of play under Diego Simeone is not suited to the young playmaker, according to a former Real Madrid star

Atletico Madrid starlet Joao Felix is a talented player but he’s playing for the “wrong club”, according to Rafael van der Vaart.

Felix became the most expensive Portuguese player in history when he completed a £113 million ($148m) switch from Benfica to Wanda Metropolitano back in July.

The 20-year-old emerged as one of the brightest prospects in European football at Estadio da Luz last season, scoring 19 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions.

His performances attracted attention from some of the world’s biggest clubs, including Real Madrid, Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain, but Atletico ended up winning the race for his signature.

Felix started the 2019-20 brightly enough, and picked up the coveted Golden Boy award in November for the best U21 player in Europe, beating the likes of Jadon Sancho and Kai Havertz in the final voting.

The ex-Benfica star has been unable to kick on since then, however, with Atletico slipping down to sixth in the La Liga standings after 22 fixtures.

Simeone’s men were beaten 1-0 by local rivals Real in the Madrid derby at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, with Felix missing the clash through injury.

Van der Vaart has criticised Simeone for failing to adjust Atletico’s playing style to accommodate Felix, while suggesting the midfielder shouldn’t have chosen to continue his development at Wanda Metropolitano.

“Joao Felix is a fine player, but he’s at the wrong club,” the ex-Real star told Ziggo Sport.

“When they signed the Portuguese striker, I felt that [Diego] Simeone would try and embark on a different brand of playing, but that’s far from the case.

“I understand that winning is important but when you have a talented forward like him, you need to cater to the style of play somewhat to suit his needs.

“Atletico Madrid play in a very compact manner with a heavy focus on defending well and attacking on the counter.
