Afenyo-Markin was insulted for changing Atta-Akyea, others’ position in Parliament – Subin MP

The Member of Parliament for Subin in the Ashanti Region, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has revealed deep-seated tensions within the Majority caucus in Parliament.

Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Oyerapa TV, Antwi disclosed that the recent reshuffle in Parliamentary committees led to significant discontent among some Majority MPs, who directed unprintable insults at the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

The reshuffle in July involved several key changes, including Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi, who moved from chairing the Local Government Committee to take over Atta Akyea’s former role at the Mines and Energy Committee. Additionally, Patrick Yaw Boamah, the MP for Okaikwei Central, was appointed as the new chairman of the Finance Committee.

According to Antwi, the reshuffle saw some first-time MPs appointed as committee chairpersons, a move he described as inappropriate given the traditional hierarchy in Parliament.

“Parliament is just like how the law school and practice are. Even if you finish Law School and your child did before you, he/she is your senior at the Bar. So in Parliament, those who came first are seniors. However, during the recent reshuffle, some first-timers were made committee chairpersons, which is wrong.”

He further shared that some senior MPs, feeling slighted by these changes, expressed their frustration in harsh terms.

“Some of the seniors in Parliament are said to have insulted the Majority Leader. I was out of town, but that is what I heard. The leader called to tell me, and I heard that some of the words were unprintable. Right now, the person feels slighted.”

Antwi specifically mentioned Samuel Atta Akyea, who lost his position as Chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee and was reassigned to chair the Local Government and Rural Development Committee.

“You’ve taken his ministerial role from him, and you’ve taken this one too. Atta Akyea attends Parliament religiously, so why will you take his position from him? There is a lot of rancor,” he stated.

Attacks on Electrochem undermines the progress of Ada, stop it – Atta-Akyea warns residents

Chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, Samuel Atta-Akyea, has characterised the opposition by Ada residents against Electrochem Ghana’s salt mining operations as a lawless attempt to hinder the company’s progress.

He cautioned residents to refrain from engaging in activities that undermine the firm’s advancement.

Over the years, Ada residents have raised concerns that the company’s operations in the area would jeopardise their livelihoods.

A conflict on November 6 resulted in one fatality at Toflokpo and numerous injuries during a shooting incident, prompting Parliament to initiate an investigation for a lasting solution.

During the committee’s visit to the salt mining site at Songor, Samuel Atta-Akyea emphasised his commitment to addressing entities that impede progress.

“My pain is hearing that there are some people who believe that if they don’t undermine this enterprise with their personal interests, they won’t be happy. It also means that if we should just put together a very vile conspiracy and commit some crimes and even kill somebody, that is their pleasure. We cannot have that lawlessness, undermining an undertaking that can bless the entire country.”

“So I am using this opportunity to sound a note of caution to those who believe that this whole Ada traditional area should not improve—when you have an investor who wants to improve a lot of people. (sic) They will seize some of the production lines for you to go produce and even create a ready market, and then they will buy it from you.

“And then somebody believes that this undertaking should be undermined. That lawlessness will have to cease. And this is one of the things that I, as the chairman of the committee, will take up at the highest level so that this country should not have people who want to undermine progress,” he stated.

The Ranking Member on the Mines and Energy Committee, John Jinapor, however, said the committee would take steps to ensure a win-win situation for a peaceful and business-friendly atmosphere.

Plot to oust IGP probe: Atta-Akyea is bias – IGP’s lawyer cries foul

Legal representative of George Akuffo-Dampare, Mr. Kwame Gyan, Ghana’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), has raised serious allegations against Mr. Samuel Atta-Akyea, the chairperson of a 7-member ad hoc committee responsible for investigating a recently leaked controversial audio.

This audio purportedly contains discussions aimed at undermining the IGP’s position.

In an interview with Joy News, lawyer Kwame Gyan expressed concerns regarding Mr. Atta-Akyea’s behaviour, claiming that the committee chairman was making statements that could prejudice the investigation’s integrity.

Mr. Atta-Akyea, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, has faced significant scrutiny for his handling of the case. Mr. Gyan accused Mr. Atta-Akyea of acting as if he were the sole commissioner overseeing the investigation, a situation that Mr. Gyan’s team is hesitant to accept moving forward.

“He has his own agenda,” Mr. Gyan asserted, hinting that Mr. Atta-Akyea has revealed his biassed intentions for all to see.

Lawyer Gyan accused Mr. Atta-Akyea of granting media interviews after committee meetings with detrimental comments. He accused Mr Atta Akyea of disclosing matters that he himself reserved for in-camera hearing and fabricating stories without basis.

Lawyer Gyan continued, “He will be granting media interviews to the extent that after one sitting, he went out there and said the extended tape, which was submitted by Bugri Naabu, and had not been played at the committee, has been doctored. Very prejudicial comments”.

The legal counsel for the IGP expressed his and his client’s respect for Parliament along with the individuals serving on the committee, stating the IGP has demonstrated his humility by appearing before the committee when he did not need to.

He stated his intention to hold the committee chairman accountable for adhering to the committee’s designated scope, as established by the Speaker of Parliament.

This is to ensure that the committee fulfils its intended purpose and nothing beyond that.

It’s worth recalling that a leaked tape featured three serving police officers and a former regional chairman of the NPP plotting the removal of the IGP.

Despite the IGP being the victim in this situation, the committee chairperson has seemingly transformed the committee into an inquiry that focuses on the IGP, essentially turning him from the victim to the accused.

This has resulted in an extensive and open-ended interrogation on behalf of those opposing him.

Numerous observers and civil society organizations have expressed concerns, viewing this as a deliberate effort to damage the IGP’s reputation and ultimately remove him from office.
