In a recent turn of events, actor and National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has been captured in a video having a tense exchange with an alleged University of Ghana student executive.

The incident took place during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise on the university campus on an undisclosed day.

Twitter user @CastinBillz shared the footage, claiming, “John Dumelo attacks a Legon student during the ongoing Limited registration exercise. His reason is that the guy prevented him from talking to his girlfriend after her registration.”

However, this account was disputed by another user, @hybrid_4266, who stated, “Hi, this is false info. I was there. The whole thing began on Saturday when an NPP guy, Dacosta, tried to hit an NDC lady because she was arguing with another NPP lady. The police separated them and it calmed down. This same Dacosta guy tried to revive the old flame from Saturday and this video you see is Dumelo’s attempt to retaliate against Dacosta.”

Adding to the narrative, @junior_justice commented, “You claim you will snatch the phone of the MP when you see her taking contacts of students, a student says you cannot do that and boom, man vex.”

User @Kennethadedotun corroborated the story, noting, “I was there, and the narrative is true. That was what happened. As you can hear in the video, he threatened and swore to snatch Honorable Lydia’s phone. The person he attacked was a student executive.”

The upcoming election, set to take place in December 2024, will see Dumelo vying for the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat against his main contender, incumbent MP Lydia Alhassan.

Dumelo, born on February 3, 1984, in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, is a well-known actor who entered the political arena in 2019. Despite not winning the seat in the previous election, he has remained a significant figure in Ghanaian politics. No project, nothing to show for as MP, just sharing of rice, oil – Dumelo on Lydia Alhassan

Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo, has criticised the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Lydia Alhassan, for what he perceives as a lack of tangible achievements since assuming office.

Dumelo pointed out that the MP has not initiated any notable projects in the constituency during her tenure. He accused her of resorting to distributing rice and oil to constituents only when elections are near, which he believes does not address the real needs of the people.

Speaking in an interview with 3FM, Dumelo urged Lydia to focus on creating employment opportunities and addressing infrastructural challenges to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the constituents.

“If you ask what she [Lydia Alhassan] has done in the last six years, she’s done nothing. If you ask the people, ‘What has Lydia done in the airport?’ Nothing… The only thing she’s doing is just sharing rice and oil with the people to solicit their votes. People are above rice and oil. They need jobs, they need infrastructure, and they need opportunities.”

Dumelo will be competing with Lydia Alhassan in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

It remains to be seen who will be victorious in the keenly contested elections slated for December 7, 2024.

The minister-designate for agriculture, Bryan Acheampong has described the report by the commission of enquiry that investigated the Ayawso West Wuogon by-election violence, as unfair to him.

According to the former Minister of State in Charge of National Security, the Emil Short Commission was not fair to him when it ultimately blamed him for the violence and recommended that he be reprimanded.

Answering questions posed to him during his vetting at parliament’s Appointment Committee sitting, the nominee said he did not authorise the operation by some National Security SWAT officers that led to some injuries on politicians during the January 31, 2019, incident.

“In the 500-plus page report [of the Commission of Inquiry], there wasn’t any part that mentioned that I authorized it. So everybody including myself was surprised and afraid that my name found expression in the conclusion that I should be reprimanded. That is why the White Paper rejected that recommendation because it failed to establish the factual basis that I authorized that operation.”

The Ayawaso West by-election took place on 31 January 2019 after the death of the incumbent MP Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko on 21 November 2018. Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party was elected with 69% of the vote.
