Stolen baby from Mamprobi Polyclinic found, suspect in police custody

A baby who had gone missing at the Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra on Tuesday, February 17, has been found sound and safe. The baby was found with an unknown woman who is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

A collective effort between the Ghana Police Service, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije and the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey led to the baby’s rescue. Many Ghanaians have expressed concern over apparent gaps in hospital security systems.

A similar incident occurred in Zebilla District Hospital in the Bawku West district of the Upper East Region where a one-week-old baby was reportedly stolen.

The infant, born to Felicia Dery, was taken in a concerning incident, shedding light on significant gaps in hospital security protocols. Zangina Grace, a midwife on duty, recounted the series of events to Adom News.

According to her, the baby’s mother delivered on May 25, 2024, at the hospital. The mother, having formed a bond with a stranger posing as a patient’s relative, entrusted her baby to the stranger while she bathed. Later, it was discovered that this imposter had a male accomplice.

“When she returned, the man and the lady were not to be found. They left with the baby. So it has been very sad. A mother who came to deliver through a C-section met some strange people who befriended her. She left her baby with them to go and have her bath, and when she returned, they had disappeared,” she added.

Grace also lamented the hospital’s inadequate security measures. She disclosed the lack of CCTV cameras and proper fencing, making it easier for such incidents to go unnoticed.

Furthermore, the midwife advocated for stricter visitor regulations, proposing adherence to visiting hours and limiting visitors to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The baby’s father also spoke with Adom News, offering additional insights into how the culprits were identified and apprehended.

“She left her ID cards, and that was how we were able to identify her. They circulated it, and that was how they caught her. I wanted to see her, but the police didn’t allow me to enter the station,” he explained.

“We had an unforeseen incident where someone was able to outwit a mother and steal her baby. During visiting hours, she gained the mother’s trust, who gave her baby to take her bath. When she returned, the baby was gone. Through timely community intervention, we have apprehended the suspect, and the baby is safe in our custody. The suspect has since been arrested by the police,” Dr. Abdul-Rahaman stated.

In Walewale, North East Region, a 27-year-old woman, Abdulai Zalia, has been arrested by the West Mamprusi Police Command for allegedly stealing a 13-month-old baby.

The suspect took the baby while the mother was asleep, and the baby’s absence was only noticed when the father returned.

This information was disclosed by the Assembly Member for Abuakwa Manhyia, Evans Opoku. Meanwhile, the cause of the incident is yet to be established. Ghana has recorded several fire incidents from January to November this year.

Recently, a fire outbreak at Tsito–Awudome Gborkorpe in the Volta Region has destroyed a two-bedroom self-contained apartment.

No casualties were reported from the incident, which occurred on Monday, December 8. several students at Kedjebi-Asato Senior High School (SHS) in the Oti Region were left unconscious after a fire gutted one of the boys’ dormitories on Tuesday morning, December 2.

The students passed out from exhaustion as a result of smoke inhalation during the fire. Unfortunately, all their belongings were destroyed. Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully brought the blaze under control.

Last month, a four-bedroom apartment at Aboabo Number 2 in the Asokore Mampong Municipality in the Ashanti Region was razed by fire on Wednesday, November 27. A young man in the community, who attempted to help extinguish the fire, was electrocuted in the process.

Speaking to the media, the Assembly Member for the area, Haruna Abdul Rashid, disclosed that the victim is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

He added that officers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) arrived at the scene to turn off the transformer to prevent the fire from spreading further.

In the early hours of Wednesday, November 26, an 8-year-old girl lost her life after a devastating fire swept through the Dansoman Market.

The little girl was trapped in the intense blaze and could not escape as the fire engulfed the area. Her charred body has been handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigation.

Several wooden structures and shops, along with their contents, were destroyed. However, adjacent structures were saved due to the prompt intervention of firefighters.

According to an update by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), a crew from the Dansoman Fire Station arrived at the scene within two minutes after receiving a distress call at 00:02 hours, but the fire was already at an advanced stage.

Because of the intensity of the blaze, eight fire engines were deployed to support two private water tankers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly. The cause of the fire, however, is yet to be determined.

On Saturday, November 22, a fire incident engulfed the Charkieh Plastics Factory site at Weija Junction in the Greater Accra Region. To contain the blaze, the Ghana National Fire Service dispatched a coordinated team from seven fire stations.

Last month, the Kwapong Nursing Training College in the Asunafo South District of the Ahafo Region was gutted by fire. The incident, which occurred on Friday, October 31, forced students to flee to safety. Authorities are working to ascertain the cause.

The newly opened China City Mall at Santasi in Kumasi, inaugurated in May 2025, was also destroyed by fire. No casualties were recorded, but the mall was completely ravaged, with no items salvaged. The cause has not yet been made public.

Earlier this month, a fire ravaged parts of Kantamanto at the Tazani Lane section in Accra. Several shops selling wooden planks and hardware were destroyed after the fire broke out near Aayalolo School at 1:17 a.m. on Saturday, September 13.

The GNFS confirmed in an update on Sunday, September 14: “The flames were confined at 6:26 a.m., brought under control by 6:37 a.m., and fully extinguished by 11:44 a.m.”

The Service added that two firefighters sustained injuries—one from an electric shock and another from burns to the left arm. Both were treated, discharged, and are in stable condition.

In a related development, several houses at Darkuman Kokompe in Accra were destroyed following a fire incident in the early hours of Sunday, August 31.

Reports indicated that victims were unable to salvage their belongings while waiting for emergency response. The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Earlier in the month, another fire destroyed a Benz cargo truck transporting over 2,500 bags of rice from Côte d’Ivoire to Kumasi on the Adugyama–Bechem highway, near the Star Oil Filling Station, on Monday, August 25.

Similarly, a popular pub and food joint at Nogora Junction near the Ho Technical University was reduced to ashes following a fire outbreak on Wednesday, August 13.

On August 4, a fire ravaged the first floor of the Accra Tourist Information Centre at Cantonments. According to the GNFS, the blaze destroyed the contents on the first floor, though the ground floor and about eight offices, including the East Wing, were salvaged.

The first GNFS engine from the Headquarters arrived at 01:04 hours to find a fully developed fire spreading rapidly in all directions, aided by strong winds. Five additional appliances from Flagstaff House, Circle, Accra City, and Ministries stations, as well as the Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV), were mobilised.

Although the blaze was brought under control at 03:32 hours, firefighting efforts continued until 06:35 hours to suppress the flames and prevent further spread to nearby properties. No injuries were recorded, but investigations into the cause are ongoing.

Another inferno destroyed several makeshift wooden and metal structures at the Madina Washing Bay near Redco Flats on Sunday, August 3. The blaze consumed utility poles, traders’ wares, personal belongings, and structures worth thousands of cedis.

While battling the fire, one firefighter sustained a minor leg injury. The Service received a distress call at 12:36 hours, and the first crew from the Madina Fire Station arrived within four minutes. Four additional fire engines from Legon, Abelemkpe, and GNFS Headquarters later joined to contain the blaze.

Thanks to the swift response, the fire was confined at 13:42 hours and fully brought under control at 13:54 hours. Overhaul operations continued until 20:50 hours. An investigation into the cause is underway.

A fire also broke out at Madina Ritz Junction. Initial reports claimed that a two-month-old baby had died in the incident, but the GNFS later clarified that no lives were lost.

“A verification team was dispatched to the scene this morning, and after engaging affected residents, particularly the women, and a Unit Committee Member of the area, the Service can confirm that no lives were lost.

“The Service has thus entreated the public and media outlets to disregard any reports suggesting otherwise, as they are inaccurate and misleading,” the GNFS posted on Facebook.

The Service explained that the fire began after a gas explosion in one of the shops and quickly spread to adjacent containers. Firefighters from the Madina, Legon, and Abelemkpe stations responded promptly and contained the blaze.

In April this year, another fire ripped through the Madina Redco Flats area, destroying more than 150 structures and claiming the life of a young Nigerian woman known as Beauty.

The inferno, which began around 11:15 p.m., spread rapidly across 140 wooden kiosks and 20 metal containers. Although firefighters arrived within minutes, the victim was trapped and could not escape. Her remains were handed over to the Madina Police.

Last year, about 50 stalls were reduced to ashes after the Madina Market in Accra caught fire. Deputy Director of Operations at GNFS, D.O.I. Kofi Forson, recounted the challenges: “It was not easy for us. There was a lack of access to where the fire was spreading, and because it happened in the night, the shops were closed, and we had to break through, which made it tedious.”

The GNFS has released statistics on fire outbreaks in the first half of 2025, showing a slight increase compared to the same period in 2024. Ghana recorded 3,595 fire cases between January and June this year, compared to 3,576 cases last year—an increase of 19 cases, representing a 0.53% rise.

The monthly distribution is: January (964), February (678), March (619), April (483), May (457), and June (394). The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of incidents (628), followed by Ashanti (581) and Central (408). The North East Region had the lowest, with just 10 cases.

In an interview on Tuesday, July 8, the Head of Public Relations at GNFS, Desmond Ackah, revealed that due to improved and swift responses, the Service saved over GH¢203 million worth of property in the last two quarters of 2025.

The GNFS listed the main causes of fires as electrical faults—including illegal connections, poor wiring, and overloaded circuits; improper appliance use, such as overused extension cords and unattended devices; unattended cooking with gas, electric, or coal stoves; careless use of naked flames like candles, mosquito coils, lighters, and matches; LPG leakages and poor handling of cylinders; bush burning; vehicle fires caused by poor maintenance or accidents; unsafe welding and hot-work practices; and deliberate arson.

Meanwhile, the Service reported a significant improvement in reducing prank calls. It recorded a 34.77% decrease—from 364,020 prank calls in the first half of 2024 to 237,470 in 2025. The GNFS attributed the decline to continuous public education and increased awareness of the legal consequences of misusing emergency lines

Sadio Mane celebrates arrival of his first child with his 19-year-old wife

Sadio Mane and his wife, Aisha Tamba, have welcomed their first child, a baby girl. The Al-Nassr forward marked the special occasion with a unique goal celebration during his team’s 3-1 victory over Al Kholood on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

Mane, who married Tamba in January 2024, celebrated his goal by mimicking the act of cradling a baby—a tribute to his newborn daughter.

The match saw Cristiano Ronaldo open the scoring in the fourth minute before Mane extended the lead in the 26th minute. Jhon Duran later secured the win with a goal just before halftime.

Earlier this year, on their first wedding anniversary, the 32-year-old footballer had shared his hopes for a big family with his 19-year-old wife.

In a chat with Senepeopleplus, the player said: “Funny question. If it is just a choice, I would say three or four. Except that it is God who decides, and I will thank him no matter what.”

Stefano Pioli’s team will return to action on April 4 after the international break, facing defending champions Al-Hilal.

Senegalese forward Sadio Mane has had a challenging season, managing just seven goals in 25 league matches and nine across all competitions.

Despite his struggles in front of goal, Mane has provided 10 assists, helping Al-Nassr secure third place in the Saudi Pro League. However, they remain 10 points behind league leaders Al-Ittihad.

  • I need 6 men to push me around like a baby – Kufuor

I need 6 men to push me around like a baby – Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has shared a poignant reflection on his own experience with disability.

During the inaugural Disability Conversation hosted by the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation, the former president stated, “I’m in a wheelchair and I cannot walk.”

According to him, he needs about “four, five, six hefty men to be pushing me around like a baby.”

Kufuor, who never imagined relying on a wheelchair a decade ago, highlighted the importance of embracing diversity and integrating people with disabilities into society. He therefore called for greater support and inclusion for persons living with disabilities (PWDs).

“Look at me today,” Kufuor continued. “If someone had said ten years ago that I would be in a wheelchair today, perhaps, he would have been disputed and damned as a false prophet, but this prophecy is the reality today.”

He emphasized that no segment of society should be left behind and urged for appreciation of our differences and individual challenges.

“We cannot afford to leave any segment of our society behind,” Kufuor added. “We must appreciate our differences and our individual challenges and work towards integrating everyone as an integral part of the human race.”

Kufuor also stressed the importance of the Disability Act in ensuring that people with disabilities feel safe, valued, and protected within society.

Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, also speaking at the event, recommended that public facilities failing to meet accessibility standards for persons with disabilities should not be certified.

“I struggle to understand how an engineer can approve a building or road construction that doesn’t comply with specific codes. It reflects poorly on us to cut corners. We need to recognize that disability is a universal condition, stemming from the fall of Adam. All humanity experiences disability in different forms and degrees. Embracing this mindset will help us plan better for our current or future needs,” Agyarko stated.

Armed robbers allegedly gang-rape 7 months pregnant woman

A family is seeking justice after their seven-month-pregnant relative was reportedly gang-raped by six armed men in Gambaga, East Mamprusi District, Northern Region.

According to a JoyNews report, the victim, whose identity remains protected, was ambushed by the armed men alongside her husband. The attackers subjected her to a horrific ordeal, taking turns raping her and leaving her severely traumatized.

In addition to the assault on the woman, her husband was also brutally beaten by the assailants, who then stole their mobile phones and motorbike.

The couple had been returning from a hospital check-up in Nalerigu when the attack occurred on the Gambaga-Dagbireboare Road.

Speaking to JoyNews, the victim’s grandfather confirmed the incident, revealing that his granddaughter was so traumatized she had to be rushed back to the hospital for immediate treatment.

Although she initially struggled to walk, he noted that she is gradually recovering and managing to cope with the aftermath of the attack.

“They were severely brutalised before their mobile phones and motorbike were taken from them. The robbers were 6 in number and well-armed.

“Initially, she had difficulty in walking but she is now doing fairly well. Years of neglect of our road has caused us a lot of calamity and sometimes we asked ourselves if we are also part of Ghana,” he said.

Residents of the community are expressing outrage over the police’s lack of action, as no arrests have been made since the incident, the report added.

They claim that the road has been plagued by frequent robbery attacks, largely due to its poor condition, and are frustrated that no measures have been taken to address the ongoing issue.

  • Teen mum attempts suicide in response to stigma toward her legless baby at Twifo

Teen mum attempts suicide in response to stigma toward her legless baby at Twifo

An 18-year-old mother attempted to kill her newborn baby because the baby was born without legs.

Grace Addobea gave birth successfully at home with the help of a traditional midwife in their village, Twifo Bonsaho, located in the Central Region.

However, the joy of childbirth quickly turned to distress when it was discovered that the baby had no legs.

News of the baby’s condition spread rapidly throughout the community, sparking widespread gossip and making the young mother feel very uncomfortable.

During her pregnancy, Grace had attended antenatal care at Wassa Ateiku Health Center, where she received several medical check-ups but was never informed of any deformity in the baby.

In her ninth month of pregnancy, she was told she lacked sufficient blood for a safe delivery and was referred to the Christian Hospital, commonly known as “Church,” also in Wassa Ateiku. There, a doctor assessed that the baby was in a breech position and recommended a C-section for delivery.

Despite this, Grace unexpectedly gave birth to a legless baby girl. The father of the baby, Paa Kwasi, abandoned them shortly afterward.

Struggling with the stigma and negative talk from the community, Grace attempted several times to kill both herself and her baby, but her parents intervened each time.

Her mother-in-law, Maame Effua Atta, instead of offering support, stated that she would have killed the baby if she had been the one to deliver it.

Grace’s father, Opanin Emmanuel Lartey, in an interview with Kasapa News’ Yaw Boagyan, made a heartfelt appeal to NGOs, individuals, the government, and religious groups to help ensure the survival and well-being of this special baby.

  • 56-year-old caregiver jailed for 5 years over force-feeding baby to death at Agbogba school

56-year-old caregiver jailed for 5 years over force-feeding baby to death at Agbogba school

A 56-year-old professional nurse, Clara Yanyi-Ampah, who served as a caregiver at Happy Bloomers School in Agbogba, has been sentenced to five years in prison for the death of an 11-month-old baby.

Yanyi-Ampah pleaded guilty to manslaughter following plea bargaining negotiations with the office of the Attorney-General.

According to the plea agreement, the manslaughter charge was upheld, and both parties recommended a sentence of five years of hard labor to the Court.

In accordance with Section 162 (h) of the Plea-Bargaining Act 1079, the Court sought confirmation from the accused before sentencing.

Both the prosecution, represented by Senior State Attorney Mercy Arthur, and defense lawyer Richard Asare Baffour, affirmed the agreement to the court.

Yanyi-Ampah, who had initially pleaded not guilty, changed her plea as part of the agreement.

Her plea was formally retaken after Justice Marie-Louise Simmons confirmed the details of the agreement with her.

    By Court

Justice Marie-Louise Simmons after listening to the parties said “On the basis of the plea of guilty of the offence of manslaughter, the accused is convicted on her own plea and sentenced to five (5) years imprisonment.

In sentencing, “the Court has considered the eight months the accused spent in custody upon her arrest in May 2021 till she was granted bail.

“I have also considered the benefit of the plea deal which has shortened the trial and reduced the burden on both the Prosecution and the Court.”

The court noted that the convict has no prior criminal record and appeared to demonstrate genuine remorse.

However, the Court said, “her reckless act of neglect of the baby and non-chantant attitude after feeding her until another teacher found the baby unresponsive was indeed a reckless disregard for human life, hence the sentence meted out.”

    Brief facts

According to the case’s brief facts, Randy and Patricia Ackah-Mensah, a married couple, are the parents of Allegra Camille Yaba Ackah-Mensah, an 11-month-old baby girl attending Happy Bloomers School in North Legon, Accra.

The facts state that the child was enrolled at the school on April 6, 2021.

The accused, Clara Yanyi-Ampah, a 56-year-old purported professional nurse, worked as a caregiver at Happy Bloomers School.

The prosecution noted that the accused was responsible for the care of baby Allegra and two other children at the school.

“On May 18, 2021, baby Allegra who had turned 11 months old that morning, went to school in good health.

“At about 2:50 pm Madam Gladys Osei, a teacher at the school passed through the changing room and tried playing with Allegra whilst the accused was changing her clothes, but she found her to be unresponsive,” the Prosecution stated.

It said she asked the accused person who was attending to Allegra if the baby was asleep, and she responded in the negative.

It said, Gladys quickly informed the administrator of the school who rushed Allegra to the North Legon Hospital.

The Prosecution said, that at about 3:07 pm, Randy (father) was called by the school administrator that his daughter had been taken ill and had been rushed to the North Legon Hospital for medical attention, so he called his wife and they went to the hospital.

“The medical report indicated that Allegra was unresponsive with no heartbeat or pulse and all efforts to resuscitate her proved futile, so she was pronounced clinically dead.

“Prior to changing Allegra’s clothes, the accused person had fed her,” it said.

“A CCTV footage obtained from the school after Allegra’s death showed that the accused person pulled the hands of Allegra to her back and poured food down her throat with a cup.

“According to the school’s policy on feeding, toddlers Allegra’s age are fed with spoons.

“The school indicated that the cup the accused used in feeding baby Allegra belonged to the accused.”

    Post mortem

“The post-mortem report indicated that Allegra’s trachea and bronchi and left lungs were filled with food particles. The pathologist concluded that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to aspiration of food following forced feeding.

The accused person was charged with manslaughter contrary to section 50 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960, Act 29 and arraigned before the High Court, Criminal Division, Accra, for trial.

Tema Hospital nurses laughed at me when I told them my baby’s breathing tracker went blank after blackout – Bereaved mother

A grieving mother has accused nurses at Tema General Hospital of responding with laughter after she reported that her baby’s breathing tracker went blank following a blackout.

The sister of the bereaved mother, stated that the loss of her newborn at the hospital was due to power outages, despite the hospital’s outright denial of any fatalities during a recent outage earlier in the week.

“My sister says that the nurses ridiculed her when she pointed out the medical tracker showing the child’s breathing ceased following the power outage,” she added.

She narrated the sequence of events wherein the doctor arrived, examined the child, and then engaged in a private conversation with her.

According to her account, upon inquiry, the doctor revealed that the child had passed away.

“The doctor arrived and examined the child before calling me privately and saying lots of things.

“So, I asked her what exactly was the issue and she disclosed that the child was dead. I, however, asked that the child should be left untouched until the mother’s father and husband come in because death and life were from God,” she stressed.

In light of the heartbreaking news, she requested that the baby remain untouched until the mother’s father and husband could arrive, emphasizing that matters of life and death are ultimately determined by a higher power.

The emergence of two separate videos depicting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) enveloped in darkness has stirred public outrage, with Ghanaians criticizing the government for the ongoing power supply challenges and their adverse effects on lives.

In the viral footage, a nurse captured the moment the hospital experienced a blackout and detailed how the power failure endangered the lives of babies in incubators.

Nonetheless, Tema General Hospital has refuted allegations of fatalities resulting from the power outage.

According to the hospital’s statement, the incident transpired during an interruption in electricity supply from the national grid, prompting the activation of the facility’s backup power system.

Management clarified that although there was a momentary malfunction in the dedicated generator for the NICU, the hospital’s electricians promptly intervened and resolved the issue.

As a result, uninterrupted power supply was ensured to the unit until the national grid’s operation was restored.

Tema General Hospital has issued a response to a circulating video depicting infants reportedly in distress at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) due to a power outage at the facility two days ago.

According to reports, the hospital faced an unreliable power supply, posing a risk to the lives of the newborns.

In the viral footage, a nurse captured the moment the hospital experienced a blackout and detailed how the power failure endangered the lives of babies in incubators.

It was alleged that one newborn lost its life as a result of the power disruption.

The video sparked widespread outcry on social media platforms, with many urging the government to address the power crisis to prevent further loss of lives.

However, in a statement, Tema General Hospital has disputed claims of fatalities due to the power outage.

The hospital clarified that the incident occurred when electricity from the national grid was interrupted, prompting the facility to activate its power backup system.

Management explained that although the dedicated generator for the NICU experienced a brief malfunction, the hospital’s electricians swiftly rectified the issue, ensuring power supply to the unit until the national grid resumed operation.

Dumsor allegedly claims life of a baby at Tema General Hospital

A newborn has tragically passed away at Tema General Hospital, reportedly due to the inconsistent power supply situation at the facility, as reported by GHOne TV based in Accra.

According to GHOne TV’s social media post on March 27, 2024, “Erratic power cut on Tuesday evening plunged the neonatal unit of Tema General Hospital into chaos, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of a newborn,” the channel posted on social media on March 27, 2024.

“The neonatal unit, where infants requiring intensive care are housed, relies heavily on electricity to sustain life-saving equipment such as oxygen support and emergency care devices. The generator intended to provide backup power for the unit is prone to shutting down when overloaded,” their post added.

The neonatal unit, dedicated to caring for infants requiring intensive care, heavily relies on electricity to operate life-saving equipment such as oxygen support and emergency care devices.

Unfortunately, the backup generator meant to provide power during outages is prone to shutting down when overloaded, exacerbating the situation.

This incident occurred shortly after a video of the blackout went viral on social media platforms, sparking public outrage amidst ongoing power blackouts across the country.

In the circulating video, the neonatal ward is shown in darkness due to the power outage. A voice, presumably that of a hospital staff member, provides context to the dire situation, stating, “There is a blackout here at the Tema General Hospital. This baby is on CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), and all of it has gone off.”

The staff member further highlights the gravity of the situation, expressing concern for up to 10 babies in critical condition due to the lack of power. This footage underscores the harsh reality of the impact of the power crisis on healthcare facilities.

In another video captured at the hospital, mothers are seen fanning their babies with cloth to alleviate the heat in the wards following the electricity outage.

Despite public demands for a load-shedding schedule to help citizens cope with the crisis, both the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Company of Ghana have remained steadfast in their refusal, insisting that the situation does not warrant a timetable.

In a recent interview, Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, responded to calls for a timetable by suggesting that those advocating for one should create their own if they believe there is a power outage schedule.

His remarks have drawn criticism from some quarters, who view them as insensitive to the challenges faced by Ghanaians.

16-year-old girl allegedly steals baby during church service in Asante Akyem Agogo

Members of the Church of Pentecost in Asante Akyem Agogo, Ashanti region, were left stunned when a 16-year-old girl reportedly snatched a baby during a church service.

The accused, Emelia Yendulom, allegedly deceived the baby‘s grandmother by claiming the mother needed to breastfeed him.

The incident took place during a naming ceremony at the church on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

Emelia vanished with the baby, causing immense distress to the parents.

It was later discovered that she had taken the child to her family’s residence in Agogo Zongo, pretending to be the mother.

Suspicions arose due to Emelia’s history of mental health issues and ongoing treatment at a prayer camp in Ananekrom.

Concerned family members verified the situation with the prayer camp and realized Emelia’s deception. They promptly took her and the baby to the police, resulting in her arrest.

The mother, who had already reported the incident to the police, confirmed the child’s identity.

While the police acknowledge Emelia’s pattern of baby theft, her mental health condition complicates potential legal action.

Currently, both the suspect and the baby’s grandmother are cooperating with the police investigation.

  • I’m paid between GHC30,000 and GHC50,000 for carrying someone’s baby – Surrogate mother

I’m paid between GHC30,000 and GHC50,000 for carrying someone’s baby – Surrogate mother

Surrogacy, once stigmatized and hidden from public discussion, has now emerged as a legitimate option for both aspiring parents and women seeking financial stability.

This practice involves a third party, known as a surrogate mother, carrying and delivering a child on behalf of intended parents who are unable to conceive or carry a pregnancy themselves.

One such surrogate mother, who chose the pseudonym Adjoa, shared her experience in a TV3 news report.

Having relocated from Kumasi to Accra in search of better opportunities, Adjoa explained that she is aware of the arrangement and is comfortable carrying a child for another family, even if she may not have the chance to see the child after birth.

The compensation for surrogate mothers in Ghana varies, with factors such as medical expenses, living costs, and compensation for the surrogate’s time and effort taken into account. While the financial aspect may provide stability for surrogate mothers, the emotional and ethical considerations of carrying a child for another family are significant.

Overall, the legalization of surrogacy in Ghana has opened up new possibilities for individuals struggling with infertility, while also presenting surrogate mothers with an opportunity to support themselves financially. However, navigating the complexities of surrogacy requires careful consideration of both the benefits and challenges involved for all parties concerned.

“I don’t have a problem. At least there is a family out there who needs a baby and they are ready to have this baby because they are in need. I never really grew up with a family and so if there is someone out there and is ready to spend a lot of money to have a baby and I have the power to make that possible for them, I don’t have a problem with that,” she stated.

Adjoa, the surrogate mother, revealed that she expects to receive compensation ranging from GH¢30,000 to GH¢50,000 for carrying a couple’s child. However, this amount does not include the costs associated with her accommodation and feeding throughout the duration of the pregnancy.

“I think for me, it is an opportunity. I don’t have to follow men, or sleep with them for money. The money aspect of it is very important. At least at the end of the pregnancy, I can get some capital to start something” she added.

In Ghana, surrogacy is not prohibited by law. Act 1027 of the 1992 constitution recognizes surrogacy as a legal arrangement, allowing individuals to engage the services of a surrogate mother to assist with childbirth.

    Act 1027 defines surrogacy as:

    (a) an arrangement where an embryo formed from the egg and sperm of persons other than that of a surrogate mother and her partner or husband is implanted into the surrogate mother; or

    (b) where a gamete is introduced into a surrogate mother to fertilise the egg of the surrogate mother, for the purpose of enabling the surrogate mother carry the foetus and give birth on behalf of the Intended Parents[1] (i.e. the person who desires to be a parent through surrogacy or any other assisted reproductive birth arrangement).

Baby rescued in Philippines after spending sixty hours beneath rubble

A three-year-old girl was saved from a landslide in the south of the Philippines after being trapped for sixty hours.

Rescuers had stopped thinking they would find more people alive, but then they were amazed to rescue the child on Friday. They called it a miracle.

A big mass of earth and rocks fell down near a village where people mine for gold in the Davao de Oro province in Mindanao on Tuesday.

Authorities report that 28 people have passed away and around 77 are still unaccounted for.

Pictures and a video on the Philippine Red Cross Facebook page show rescue workers taking the girl, who is wrapped in a blanket and connected to an oxygen tank, to a hospital in Mawab municipality.

Edward Macapili, who works for the disaster agency in Davao de Oro province, said it was a miracle. He also said that the searchers thought the people who were missing were most likely not alive.

He said to AFP: “That makes the rescuers feel hopeful. ” Children are not as strong as adults, but this child still made it through.

Randy Loy, who is in charge of handling disasters in Davao de Oro province, said at a press meeting, “We still want to rescue more people even though it has been four days. ”

However, he cautioned that they cannot promise to survive after 48 hours.

The landslide happened on Tuesday night and destroyed houses. It also covered three buses and a type of minibus that were waiting to pick up workers from the gold mine.

Landslides happen a lot in the Philippines because of the mountains, lots of rain, and cutting down trees for mining and logging.

Continuous heavy rain in Mindanao has caused landslides and flooding, leading to many people seeking shelter.

Rescuers had to stop their work when a 5. 9 earthquake happened on Saturday.

The Philippine Star says that no one has been killed or hurt in the earthquake.

  • 4 negative impacts of maintaining very long nails for nursing mothers

4 negative impacts of maintaining very long nails for nursing mothers

We all know how a fresh set of long, stylish nails can boost our mood and add a dash of glam to our look. But, when you’re cradling and caring for your little one, those fashionable claws might need to take a backseat.

It can be dangerous for the baby

Foremost on the list of concerns is safety. Babies are delicate, and their skin is as tender as it gets. Long nails pose a risk of accidentally scratching their soft skin.

More alarmingly, there’s a real danger of harming sensitive areas, like their eyes. It only takes a momentary slip for a long nail to cause an eye injury, which could be serious. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your baby’s well-being.

    It can carry germs

Next up, is hygiene. Those long, gorgeous nails can unfortunately harbor dirt and germs under them. When you’re a nursing mom, maintaining top-notch hygiene is crucial. You’re in constant contact with your baby, and it’s surprisingly easy for those hidden germs to transfer. Short nails are simpler to keep clean and safe, ensuring your baby is protected from unwanted bacteria.

It makes it more difficult to handle your baby

Handling a newborn is practically an art. It requires finesse and care, and long nails can complicate things like feeding, changing diapers, or dressing your baby. Shorter nails allow for a better grip and more precise movements, ensuring your baby’s comfort and safety during these daily routines.

    It makes simple tasks difficult

Parenthood is all about practicality. Long nails can turn simple tasks into challenging feats. Whether it’s fastening tiny buttons or changing a nappy, longer nails can be a hindrance. Opting for shorter nails can make these everyday tasks more manageable, making life a bit smoother for both you and your baby.

Conclusion: Embracing the Practicality of Motherhood

While long nails are undoubtedly stylish, as a nursing mom, the benefits of keeping them short are significant. Remember, it’s about providing the best care for your little one, and sometimes, that means making small sacrifices in personal style.

There will be plenty of time for glamorous nails in the future, but for now, embracing the practicality of motherhood is the way to go.

21-year-old father allegedly kills three-week-old child for money rituals

The Awutu Bereku District Police Command has apprehended a 21-year-old father, identified only as Bright, in connection with the death of his three-week-old baby.

The incident, suspected to be linked to money rituals, took place in Fetteh Kakraba, Gomoa East District of the Central Region.

The unfortunate event unfolded on a Monday night when Bright visited the baby and the child’s mother.

During this time, the baby was asleep, and the mother had stepped out to make a purchase.

According to an account provided by Bright’s friend to Adom News, he unknowingly became involved when Bright asked him to bring the baby from the room. Little did he know about Bright’s ulterior motives.

The friend recalled, “I met Bright on the school park with the baby, and a few minutes later, the mother called that he was missing.”

Following the news of the baby’s disappearance, a search party was immediately organized.

The friend was later apprehended after suspicions arose that he might be involved in taking the baby out of the room.

Although the accomplice led the search party to the school park, they arrived too late; Bright had already killed the baby. Both Bright and his friend are now in custody, cooperating with ongoing investigations.

Baby clings to mother who died giving birth

The second pregnancy of Samantha Klopp proceeded according to plan. But as soon as she went into labor, medical professionals hurried her to the operating room so they could attempt to save her and the unborn child. Her spouse took an extraordinary action when there didn’t seem to be any hope left.

Craig and Samantha were overjoyed upon learning they were expecting their second child after a year of trying. Their son, John, had eagerly anticipated having a younger brother. Opting to keep the baby’s gender a mystery, Samantha had the ultrasound results sealed and handed to a friend in charge of the gender-reveal gathering.

Amidst a spread of sweets and a cake, the revelation unfolded. A chorus of joy erupted when purple and pink balloons descended, adhering to the apartment ceiling, signifying a girl. Among the delighted onlookers, none were more moved than Craig.

The expectant father showered kisses on his wife and son, embracing the reality of his dream coming true. The anticipation and excitement for the arrival of his daughter were palpable, and as a devoted Red Sox fan, he couldn’t contain his enthusiasm, “I’m going to teach her to play baseball too,” which elicited laughter from everyone in the room.

During their college years, Craig and Samantha’s paths crossed. Renowned for his hitting prowess and regional championship at 16, Craig secured admission to a prestigious university. Despite a career-limiting shoulder injury, he continued to play for the university, cherishing his best athletic moments during campus practice.

It was during one of these practices that Craig caught sight of Samantha, a charming girl unfamiliar to him. After a powerful hit that sent the ball soaring into the sky, he noticed her in the company of a friend, marking the beginning of their love story.

“That was the best hit of my life because it brought me you,” Craig told Samantha during their wedding vows in front of all the guests.

“That was the best hit of my life because it brought me you,” Craig told Samantha during their wedding vows in front of all the guests.

Samantha’s graduation ceremony, a year later, was a simple and elegant affair. Craig, having traded in his bat for a calculator, pursued a career as an engineer but remained an ardent baseball fan. The couple’s greatest joy, the birth of John, who was already showing a penchant for hitting balls at the tender age of three, brought immeasurable happiness. Craig and Samantha, though not expecting their son to be as athletically inclined as his father, reveled in the joy of family activities, from playing in the yard to attending Red Sox games together.

As they anticipated the arrival of their daughter, the family seemed to be in perfect harmony. However, fate had a different plan.

In the lead-up to Samantha’s due date, the couple prepared diligently for their impending arrival, decking out the baby’s room with a crib, colorful clothes, toys, and an abundance of diapers. The delivery date was set, and Samantha, having experienced childbirth before, felt a sense of calm. Little did she know, an unexpected twist awaited them in the penultimate week.

Samantha awoke to mild contractions, seemingly inconsequential. With little concern, the couple headed to the hospital to ensure a smooth process. However, during the doctor’s appointment, the contractions intensified, and her water broke. What started as a routine visit took a distressing turn as Samantha, feeling dizzy and nauseated, struggled through the contractions, disrupting her breakfast.

Unfamiliar with this experience from her first childbirth, Samantha assumed it was a minor hiccup. Unfortunately, she was mistaken, and a few minutes later, she passed out in front of the doctor, leaving Craig in a state of terror. Witnessing his wife in distress, Craig, despite his concentration as a baseball player, was unprepared for this alarming situation.

“What’s going on?” “What does she have?” he’d ask in vain to a squad rattled by the unexpected event.

  • Baby thief from Kenya indicted after exposé by BBC

Baby thief from Kenya indicted after exposé by BBC

A Kenyan hospital employee, Fred Leparan, who was exposed by the BBC for selling a baby on the black market, has been found guilty of child trafficking. Leparan, employed at Nairobi’s Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital, was captured on film accepting $2,050 (£1,600) to facilitate the sale of a baby boy under the hospital’s care. This arrest occurred in 2020 following an investigation by BBC Africa Eye.

Leparan faced charges alongside another hospital employee, Selina Awour, relating to child theft. While Awuor was convicted on three counts of child neglect, she was acquitted of child trafficking. Both individuals are scheduled for sentencing on September 26.

The BBC’s Africa Eye investigative team initiated contact with Leparan, posing as potential buyers after receiving information from a source suggesting his involvement in illegal child trafficking at the government-run hospital. A meeting was arranged at the hospital, during which Leparan showed minimal interest in the undercover reporter’s situation before agreeing to sell the baby boy.

On the day when the baby boy was meant to be transferred from the hospital to a government-run children’s home, along with two other children, Leparan was caught on camera falsifying the transfer paperwork to make it appear that the home should expect only two children instead of three. The BBC ensured that all three children were safely delivered to the children’s home but recorded Leparan altering the paperwork and informing them that the child was now theirs to take away.

Despite overwhelming evidence, the legal proceedings lasted for more than two years. Leparan secured strong legal representation in Kenya, but his testimony during the trial was inconsistent and evasive. He initially denied his involvement, attempting to claim that the voice in the undercover footage belonged to someone else, even though his mouth moved in sync with the words. Later, he admitted that some of the words were indeed his own.

Leparan also claimed not to recognize various parts of the hospital where he had worked for three years, despite the court being presented with footage showing him secretly arranging the theft and transfer of the baby boy.

While the BBC’s investigation exposed the illegal sale of one child from Mama Lucy, a former hospital employee who spoke to Africa Eye anonymously revealed knowledge of 12 missing children under the hospital’s care in just two months.

“So many people are corrupt. Once they are given something small they keep quiet and never talk,” he said, referring to bribes given to staff.

In Kenya, the demand for stolen children remains distressingly high, driven by a combination of cultural stigma surrounding infertility and adoption, along with a cumbersome legal adoption process.

The hospital scam orchestrated by Leparan is just one facet of this multifaceted issue. Africa Eye’s investigations have also captured traffickers organizing the illicit buying and selling of infants in clandestine street clinics. Moreover, the audacious abduction and sale of babies from vulnerable, homeless mothers living on Nairobi’s streets have been documented.

Mary Auma, who operated a clinic where vulnerable mothers gave birth and sold their babies for subsequent resale at a profit, disappeared after being exposed by our undercover team. Upon returning to Nairobi recently, we found no trace of Auma, and her clinic had been shut down.

However, the heartbreaking reality persists: babies continue to be abducted in Nairobi. Near the site of the closed clinic, a woman approached us, clutching a flyer featuring the image of her five-year-old granddaughter, Chelsea Akinye. According to Chelsea’s grandmother, Rosemary, the young girl was abducted from the street a year and six days prior. Rosemary has tirelessly searched for Chelsea every day since her disappearance, distributing flyers throughout the neighborhood and beyond. She described Chelsea as a joyful child with immense potential in her studies.

“When she came from school, she would get anyone close to her to help her with homework before she would go out to play,” Rosemary said.

“I have searched for Chelsea all the way to Busia. Since that day, I leave very early in the morning, sometimes at 4am, to search for her.”

Like other parents or grandparents who have been subjected to the terrible ordeal of having a child being snatched, Rosemary sometimes longs for closure in any form.

“I imagine someone would have abandoned her somewhere, or she has been killed and left somewhere. And I go and bury her, and it leaves my heart,” she said.

Reliable statistics regarding the extent of child trafficking in Kenya are scarce. According to Florence Bore, the Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection in the country, there were 6,841 reported cases of missing children between July 2022 and May 2023, with only 1,296 successfully reunited with their families.

Mueni Mutisya, representing the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Child Trafficking Unit, informed the BBC that the unit now deals with an average of approximately five new cases of child abduction each week. These cases disproportionately impact families with the lowest incomes, according to Ms. Mueni.

In 2020, the day after our initial investigation was published, Kenya’s then Minister for Labour and Social Protection, Simon Chelugui, made a commitment to take stringent government actions to combat the trade in stolen children. He vowed that those responsible would face the full weight of the law.

While new laws aimed at strengthening child protections came into effect in the past year in Kenya, Ms. Mueni emphasizes that there is still much work to be done. She advocates for new legislation that would mandate members of the public to report any suspicions of child abuse or abduction, further enhancing child protection measures.

“Let us have a common goal of protecting children,” she said.

The most vulnerable children are still those being raised by the poorest families, according to Maryana Munyendo, the head of charity Missing Child Kenya, which operates a toll-free line for people to report abductions.

“Within Nairobi, we still get a lot of cases from the slum areas,” Ms. Munyendo said. She said her phone line still received three missing child reports every day on average.

  • Birth asphyxia: CRI demands probe into infant deaths

Birth asphyxia: CRI demands probe into infant deaths

A child-centered organization, Child Rights International (CRI), has expressed deep concern over the recent data from the Ghana Health Service (GHS), revealing that 50,000 infants lose their lives annually due to birth asphyxia.

Describing this figure as disturbing, CRI called for a thorough investigation into the root causes of these deaths to inform appropriate policy decisions and actions.

In a statement released by Executive Director Bright Appiah in Accra, CRI emphasized the importance of introducing a parliamentary bill that addresses the appropriate procedures and care for newborns during birth in the country.

They highlighted that such a bill could be initiated by a Member of Parliament through a private member’s bill.

“This process can also be initiated by a Member of Parliament by way of a private member’s bill,” the statement added.

Birth asphyxia occurs when a baby’s brain and other organs are deprived of sufficient oxygen and nutrients before, during, or immediately after birth.

This can happen in the womb, leading to stillbirths, or during prolonged labor. According to Dr. Edward Antwi, the Programme Manager for Newborn and Child Health at GHS, approximately one million babies are born each year, with a neonatal mortality rate of 17 per 1,000 live births.

This means that out of one million births, approximately 170,000 babies die, and 30% of these deaths are attributed to birth asphyxia.

On a daily basis, about 136 children lose their lives due to this condition, putting a strain on the healthcare system and negatively affecting the nation’s health sector.

In response to this distressing revelation, CRI urged the government and relevant stakeholders to take immediate and decisive action. They recommended the establishment of a national policy that outlines the expected standard of care in all health facilities providing child delivery services. This policy should include specific responsibilities for stakeholders, including mothers and health personnel, and clearly define the consequences for those found responsible for causing the death of a baby. Additionally, CRI called for the provision of mandatory psychological services to families who experience the loss of a baby at birth.

To tackle this issue at its roots, CRI also urged the government to implement a policy that ensures all pregnant women visit health facilities for early diagnosis of asphyxia.

As a child-centered organization, CRI emphasized the need for collective efforts and resources from the government, policymakers, and relevant stakeholders to significantly reduce these statistics in line with SDG Goal Three.

Sex is a natural and normal part of pregnancy, especially if you are experiencing a normal pregnancy.

Many expectant parents may worry about the potential risks of having sex during this time, but rest assured, it is generally considered safe for both you and your baby.

The baby is well-protected within your abdomen and the muscular walls of the uterus. Penetration and the movement during intercourse won’t harm the baby.

The amniotic sac and the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby act as a cushion, providing an additional layer of protection.

If you have been concerned about the potential dangers of having sex during pregnancy, here are some reasons why you shouldn’t be afraid at all:

    Aids blood circulation

During pregnancy, blood supply increases significantly to fulfill the needs of both the mother and the developing child. Engaging in sexual activity during the pregnancy period contributes to this increased circulation, which holds importance for several reasons.

Sexual activity triggers the release of hormones in the body. These hormones play a crucial role in restoring an adequate supply of oxygen and essential nutrients to the fetus, supporting its proper growth and development. This process is vital for ensuring the well-being and health of the growing baby throughout the pregnancy journey.

    Speeds up post-partum recovery

Engaging in sexual activity during pregnancy, specifically experiencing orgasms, can have beneficial effects on the pelvic muscles, ultimately contributing to a faster postpartum recovery.

During orgasm, the pelvic muscles contract and release rhythmically. These contractions help to strengthen and tone the pelvic floor muscles, which are essential for supporting the pelvic organs and maintaining bladder and bowel control.

When the pelvic muscles are well-conditioned and toned, they can be better prepared for the stresses of childbirth. Strong pelvic muscles may facilitate the labor and delivery process, potentially making it more efficient and less strenuous.

Moreover, after childbirth, having well-conditioned pelvic muscles can aid in the recovery process. Strengthened pelvic floor muscles may lead to better postpartum healing and a quicker return to normal pelvic function.

It’s important to note that each pregnancy and individual’s experience may vary. Before engaging in sexual activity or any form of exercise during pregnancy, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider to ensure that it is safe for both the mother and the baby.

    Induces labour and easy delivery

Having an orgasm during sex can be considered one of the most significant reasons as every woman desires a smooth and easy delivery. When a woman experiences orgasm, the uterus is stimulated to contract. Regular sexual activity during pregnancy can help to contract and strengthen the pelvic muscles and also assist in opening the cervix. This preparation can contribute to a more straightforward and uncomplicated labor process, reducing the need for external interventions to facilitate childbirth.

In fact, some healthcare providers even suggest engaging in sexual activity closer to the due date as it may help induce labor naturally, especially if the body is already showing signs of readiness for childbirth.

Apart from its benefits during labor and delivery, sexual activity during pregnancy can also have positive effects on blood pressure. Maintaining healthy blood pressure is crucial during pregnancy, as high blood pressure can lead to the pregnancy complication of preeclampsia. By promoting circulation and relaxation, sexual activity may contribute to keeping blood pressure within healthy ranges during this critical time.

As with any activity during pregnancy, it’s essential to communicate with a healthcare provider to ensure that sexual activity is safe and suitable for each individual’s unique pregnancy circumstances. By discussing any concerns and following medical guidance, expectant mothers can enjoy the potential benefits of sexual activity while prioritizing their health and the well-being of their baby.

    Reduces stress and pain

During pregnancy, while it is a generally joyous time, it’s entirely normal for expectant mothers to experience worries about various aspects of life, such as work and the adjustments that will come with the arrival of their baby. These concerns are natural and can sometimes lead to stress and difficulty sleeping.

However, there is a physiological aspect that can help alleviate some of this stress and promote better sleep. When you experience an orgasm, your body releases a hormone called oxytocin, often referred to as the “love hormone.” Oxytocin is known for its role in promoting feelings of bonding, affection, and connection.

When oxytocin is released during sexual activity, it can have a calming effect on the body and mind, helping to counteract stress and anxiety. This can be particularly beneficial during pregnancy when emotions can run high, and anxieties about the future may arise.

Moreover, the relaxation induced by oxytocin can contribute to better sleep quality. Improved sleep during pregnancy is essential for the well-being of both the mother and the developing baby.

Engaging in sexual activity and experiencing the release of oxytocin can be a natural way for expectant mothers to find some relief from stress and enjoy more restful sleep during this transformative time in their lives. As always, it’s crucial for each individual to communicate openly with their healthcare provider and engage in sexual activity or any form of exercise during pregnancy in a way that is safe and comfortable for them.

The infant was placed inside a black polythene bag and left near a private residence in the area.

The baby’s cries alerted the homeowner, who promptly intervened and made the startling find.

The Ofaakor District Police were immediately informed and took swift action.

They rescued the baby boy and rushed him to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Subsequently, he was transferred to the Village of Hope hospital in Gomoa Fetteh.

Doctors at the hospital praised the individuals involved in the rescue, stating that if they had waited any longer, the baby might not have survived.

As authorities delve into the matter, the Police have launched a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the baby’s abandonment.

KNUST Hospital accused of alleged medical malpractice over death of 10-day-old baby

Tragedy struck at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Hospital in Kumasi, as a 10-day-old baby named Faraj Mohammed passed away due to a suspected case of medical negligence.

The infant had been brought to the hospital for a routine male circumcision procedure. Unfortunately, during the course of the procedure, Faraj Mohammed experienced a cardiac arrest, leading to a critical medical emergency.

Despite the immediate care provided by the medical team, the baby could not be saved, and he tragically passed away a few minutes after the cardiac arrest.

This heart-wrenching incident has left the baby’s parents in deep anguish and sorrow over the loss of their beloved child.

On April 3, fashion designer Halimatu Adams, 27, and private security officer Mohammed Jamal, 36, brought their son to the KNUST Hospital for a quick male circumcision treatment.

A nurse welcomed Faraj Mohammed and then led him to the operating room.

“The baby was 10 days old so we decided to send him to hospital for circumcision. Whilst at the hospital, they showed us the theatre. We met a nurse who examined the baby, undressed him and took off his diapers and told us everything was okay,” says Mr Jamal.

The parents sitting in the theater’s waiting area heard the baby’s shrill cries for the final time.

Then, some senior nurses and physicians could be seen running into the theater, which is when the parents started to become upset.

The baby’s mother, Halimatu Adams, knew something bad had happened to the baby, but had to endure a long wait to hear news about her son.

I became restless a few minutes later. A woman who spoke to me in Hausa tried to calm me down but it was impossible. I felt like attending nature’s call.”

The inconsistencies in communicating the situation to the parents fuelled speculations about the condition of the baby.

Whilst the couple were asked to get a hospital attendance card to prepare for admission of the baby, an ambulance was brought in a few minutes later to transport him to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

Then came the time to break the news of the death of the baby to the parents.

“I didn’t allow the doctor to finish what he was saying…I told him I think my child was dead…I felt something bad had happened to my son,” Halimatu recounted to JoyNews.

Parent’s nightmarish experience of being denied a male child

    The Jamals are traumatised

The thought of losing their only male child under bizarre circumstances has left the couple traumatized.

“The feeling or the pain that you go through; unless you experience it because it’s something you cannot even express,” says Mr. Jamal.

Beyond the trauma, the parents would have to endure the nightmarish experience of the cry of their baby echoing in their minds every now and then, especially at night.

“The psychological pains, the trauma that you go through in the night when you hear the cry of the baby,” Mr, Jamal has opened up.

The Jamals take solace in video and pictures of late baby

As Muslims, having a male child is not only a privilege but an honour from the Almighty Allah for the parents, especially Mrs Jamal whose wish is to have all male children.

Though the couple is blessed with a two-year-old daughter from their three-year-old marriage, it has been the desire of the Jamals to have a male child.

But their joy has been cut short in a more bizarre tragic manner as expressed by Mr Jamal who has been assigned the extra responsibility of consoling the wife.

“Any night, when you hear the cry of the child, you can’t do anything. You can’t focus.”

The couple has been reduced to watching videos and pictures of their son on their phones on a daily basis.

Authorities at the KNUST Hospital have declined comments on the matter.

The University Relations Officer says the matter has been referred to the legal department for settlement.

But a patient-centred non-governmental group is leading a campaign to bring justice to the Jamals.

The Advocacy for Medical Malpractice Victims says it can establish a prima facie case against the KNUST Hospital.

“From all indications, the hospital was negligent in the conduct of the circumcision,” Kwame Brobbey Appiah the Executive Secretary said.

“We believe strongly that we would be happy to establish a prima facie case,” he added.

Checks at the Health Ministry indicate that medico-legal cases are on the rise in the country.

In recent times, at least two medico-legal cases are received every week, a development which has left Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, worried.

“What I am seeing of late at the ministry is the issue of litigation. For the past four weeks or so, almost every week, we get at least one letter from the Attorney-General’s office.

“Somebody has sued somebody with problems with care, service delivery and they want us to come with information to go to court with.”

That was a concern the minister raised at this year’s senior managers meeting of the Ghana Health Service in Kumasi recently.

  • Newborn baby found in refuse dump at Koforidua

In a startling turn of events, a scrap dealer searching for electronic waste stumbled on a newborn baby girl.

The incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, July 6, 2023, as the unidentified scrap dealer scoured through discarded items in hopes of uncovering something of value for his trade.

The discovery sent shockwaves through the residents of Anlo Town, a suburb of Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

The baby was found inside a popular refuse container located near a public toilet, leaving the community in disbelief.

Abu Amadu, the Assemblyman for the Anlo Town Electoral Area, recounted the scrap dealer’s account of the incident during an interview.

According to the dealer, he witnessed a young lady discarding a black polythene bag into the refuse container but thought nothing of it at the time.

Approximately an hour later, while scavenging for scraps, the dealer ventured into the same container and noticed the black polythene bag. To his horror, upon opening it, he discovered the lifeless body of a newborn baby girl wrapped inside.

Overwhelmed by shock, the dealer raised an alarm, attracting the attention of nearby residents who promptly reported the incident to the Assemblyman. However, since the scrap dealer was not a resident of the area, he could not identify the person responsible for the act.

Mr. Amadu took immediate action and reported the distressing discovery to the Koforidua Central police station. Police officers arrived at the dump site to examine the scene and found the deceased infant wrapped in the bag.

Subsequently, the remains of the baby were transported to the morgue at the Eastern Regional Hospital for preservation and an autopsy. Meanwhile, the police have initiated investigations into the incident with the goal of apprehending the perpetrator behind this atrocious crime.

“If you have something you cherish, you are happy about it, and wish to keep it forever, then please social media should be the last place to make people know about it but for my daughter’s father, I wouldn’t post him for an ordinary person to disrespect and associate him with false information”, she added.

  • KATH surgeons successfully correct complex limb malformation on 5-month-old baby

KATH surgeons successfully correct complex limb malformation on 5-month-old baby

In a remarkable display of medical expertise, a multidisciplinary team comprising surgeons, anaesthesiologists, paediatricians, and nurses, led by Dr Dominic Konadu-Yeboah, Senior Specialist in Trauma and Orthopaedics, carried out a six-hour procedure to address a challenging congenital limb abnormality known as polymelia in a five-month-old infant.

The procedure took place at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) after the hospital was contacted four hours following the baby’s caesarean section delivery at a district hospital.

The infant suffered from multiple health conditions, including polymelia, anorectal malformation, genital fistula, eye vision impairment, and improper location of the right kidney.

Polymelia is a rare limb deformity characterized by the presence of extra or supernumerary limbs attached to a portion of the body.

It affects approximately 6 out of every 10,000 live newborns. Although occurrences mainly involve the lower limbs, there have been a few recorded cases. The condition is believed to result from the inadequate separation of identical twins in the womb during fetal development. When the additional limbs are attached to the pelvis, it is referred to as pyromelia.

Dr. Konadu-Yeboah highlighted that the parents were extensively informed about the baby’s condition before the surgery, praising the team’s extraordinary achievement. Additionally, a group of professionals provided psychological counselling to the family, addressing the surgery, its outcomes, and potential side effects.

The complex surgical repair procedure took place on February 20, 2023, following five months of intensive preparations and pre-operative investigations, including Computer Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), echo, and ultrasound scans to identify any associated abnormalities.

Dr. Konadu-Yeboah stated, “The immediate and intermediate postoperative periods have been managed without any complications, and the baby is steadily recovering as expected. Further minor procedures and surgical interventions will be conducted to completely restore normal functioning to the baby.”

Previously, infants with similar conditions were either abandoned or left to perish, according to Dr. Konadu-Yeboah.

However, he emphasized that immediate specialized interventions offer these infants a chance to live normal lives, given the present medical knowledge available at KATH and in the nation.

The baby’s parents expressed their satisfaction with the results thus far, praising the surgical team and all the staff members involved in their child’s successful operation.

Members of the multidisciplinary team included trauma and orthopaedic surgeons Dr. Obiageli Joan Ofungwu, Johnny Sobotie, Kwasi Twumasi-Baah Jr., and Samuel Twene Boadi, alongside pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, nurses, and other specialists. Notable contributors to the team included Drs. Boateng Nimako, Prof. Paul Poku Sampene Ossei, Drs. Ebenezer Akomea-Agyin, Anthony Davor, George Osei Prempeh, Sophia Ankrah, Yaw Asiedu Basoah, Gabriel Asante, Abigail Opoku, and Yaw Asiedu Basoah.

Other esteemed members of the KATH faculty, who played crucial roles, were Drs. Michael Amoah, Lynda Akalazu Ogechi, Zulfawu Ibrahim, Helena Okrah, and Seth Agyemang.

Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, the hospital’s CEO, praised Dr. Konadu-Yeboah and the entire team for their successful execution of such a complex surgery. He highlighted that this accomplishment showcases the power of teamwork and urged all clinical director.

Teenage pregnancy cases in Eastern region continue to increase.

The situation worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when schools were shut down for nearly a year.

A total of over 10,000 teenage pregnancy cases were recorded in 2021 in the Eastern region, according to Ghana Health Service.

This has necessitated some interventions such as “back to school” where Ghana Education Service staff move to communities to encourage pregnant and teenage mothers to return to school.

In Akyemansa District for instance, “Safe and Protective Environment for Adolescent Development (SPREAD)” project is being implemented in 40 rural communities in the district by Ark Development Organization (ADO), an NGO with support from UNICEF in partnership with Global Affairs Canada to curb alarming teenage pregnancy, assist pregnant students and teen mother’s return to school.

“Cross your leg;100% cross your leg” is a slogan coined to cause behavioral change in that regard.

The project officer of Ark Development Organization, David Kwaning says 89 of 369 adolescent mothers recorded in 2020 have so far been identified for assistance to go back to school or enrolled in economic empowerment program or legal aid.

“Per what the Ghana Education Service gave us, we have about 369 adolescent mothers in the district as at 2020.so we are to identify them and then assist them in three ways. Some of them have to go back to school, others too need justice ,other too need health assistance. So we have identified 89 of the Adolescent mothers” David Kwaning Project Officer said.

Meanwhile the NGO is initiating legal action against a man who took undue advantage of a 12 year old vulnerable girl who dropped out of school after her father died, exploited her in child labour, defiled and impregnated her.

The project has reached 1,577 out of target adolescents of 2000 with four months to end.

“The video is very disheartening to even watch. We are even compelled to question if the child is his own. But even if the child is not his, that does not permit him to treat a baby like that. We find it worrying because this is not the first time we are seeing something like this. There was a similar video of a woman abusing a baby and we did not see how this issue ended. So we at Givers have also taken an interest and our CEO, Dr Derek Danso has also thought it wise to contribute to the search for the suspect. So whoever has information leading to his arrest will be given an additional GHC5,000 in cash,” Public Relations Officer of the Company, Richard Sarkodie told Accra FM in an interview.

The Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, announced a bounty of GHC2,000 for any information leading to the arrest of the man who was captured in a viral video whipping a young baby.

Subsequently, children advocacy non-governmental organisation, Child Rights International also announced an additional GHC10,000 reward for any such information.

  • How Torgbui Gobah eulogized Asantehene at Akwasidae

There is often this rift between persons belonging to the Akan and the Ewe ethnic groups, with each group accusing the other of some disrespect.

But this was not the case at the celebration of the 7th Akwasidae in the Asante calendar at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, on Monday, October 4, 2022, which was attended by many dignitaries, including an Ewe chief, the chief of staff of the Forum for Kings and Traditional Leaders of Africa, Torgbui Gobah Tengey.

During a speech at the event, Torgbui Gobah Tengey, who is also an International Peace Ambassador, described the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as the greatest monarch in the world.

He also praised the Ashantehene for his role in the maintenance of world peace.

“His Majesty, my great brother, the greatest monarch of the world today by your deeds. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is a King of Peace. He has performed creditably, to the admiration of the whole world.

“We call each other brothers. As an Ewe man, he loves me to the narrow. So, when we see each other, we are always smiling at each other. Otumfuo is a great King, a peacemaker, a loving father. Your peaceful overturns are unparalleled. A few years ago, you were at the United Nations, (and) you surprised the whole world with your oratory, ‘The African is a Great Son of the World’.

“You have proved beyond reasonable doubt that Africans can remake the world. And I rely on you, we rely on you to have that union of fellowship among the rest of Africa so that we can conquer the world,” he said.

Torgbui Gobah even went on to dedicate his “Development Chief of Africa” award which was conferred on him by the President of Congo, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, to the Asantehene.

“As a peace ambassador, I’ve been honoured by the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo through the All Africa Conference of Churches because of my peace overtures in the world.

“It is through your (the Asantehene’s) prayers and blessings that I have reached that level in the world. And I’m showing this honour, for the first time, to you, my mentor, before it goes any were. But I would like you to keep this in your kingdom,” he said.
