  • Pierre Emerick Aubameyang robbed and assaulted at gunpoint in Barcelona

It is reported that Gabonese striker, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was robbed at gunpoint in his apartment in Barcelona in the early hours of Monday, August 29, 2022.

According to a report by El Pais, at least four men broke into his house in Castelldefels and threatened him with firearms and iron bars. The report also indicates that the robbers made away with jewels.

The striker was reportedly assaulted in the course of the robbery in front of his wife Alysha Behague.

It is currently unknown whether his two kids were in the house during the unpleasant moment.

Perrie Emerick Aubameyang was an unused substitute in Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Real Valladolid on Sunday, August 28, 2022.

He has been linked with a move to England with Chelsea showing keen interest in bringing the Gabonese to English Premier League after departing Arsenal in January 2021.

  • Umtiti loan to Serie A minnows Lecce confirmed

Samuel Umtiti will be joining Serie A side Lecce on a season-long loan, Barcelona have confirmed.

Barcelona announced his departure from the club with no option to buy on their Twitter platform.

Umtiti becomes the latest player to be offloaded by the club as they seek to get their squad in order following a high-spending transfer window, despite well-documented financial difficulties.

He penned a new extension with Barca earlier this year, albeit on reduced wages, but will now spend the 2022-23 campaign in Italy with newly promoted Lecce,

Umtiti joined Barca from Lyon in 2016 and has made 133 appearances across all competitions for the club, winning two league titles and the Copa del Rey on three occasions.

In addition, he was a key member of the France squad that claimed World Cup glory at Russia 2018, though the centre-back has not played for his country since 2019 and is expected to miss out on selection for this year’s tournament in Qatar.

Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski, Franck Kessie, Raphinha, Andreas Christensen and Jules Kounde have joined Barcelona.

Neto, Oscar Mingueza, Riqui Puig, Luuk de Jong, Adama Traore and Dani Alves among those to leave so far.

Barca are still yet to register former Sevilla defender Kounde, whose future at Camp Nou could well hinge upon whether Xavi’s side are able to offload forwards Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Memphis Depay before the deadline, while Martin Braithwaite is another player they would like to move on.

  • ‘Bernardo Silva likes Barcelona very much’ – Guardiola admits

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has stated that Bernardo Silva is a fan of Barcelona, thus may want to join before the end of the transfer window.

For Guardiola, Man City would still want to work with Silva as he has proven himself worthy.

According to him, should Silva decide to move, it would pose a huge challenge for City since the transfer window closes in a few days.

He however noted that his goal is to ensure all players with his side are happy, therefore, would not hinder Silva from moving should he decide to.

“We count on him and I do not want him to leave,” Guardiola said. “He is a superlative player in everything [he does]. But as I have always said: I do not want a player to be unhappy. If a good offer came, he wanted to leave and there was an agreement, we would see.

Although, if he left now, it would be a problem, because the market is about to close. With that said, Bernardo likes Barcelona very much,” he added.

Silva remains a key man for Guardiola’s Manchester City, excelling and scoring the equaliser in Sunday’s 3-3 draw at Newcastle United, yet he also continues to be linked to Barca.

The Blaugrana have invested heavily in this window, with Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde among their eye-catching signings.

However, Barca coach Xavi is said to still be eager to add to his squad, with Silva seen as a potentially key capture.

City visited Camp Nou on Wednesday for a friendly another 3-3 draw and both Xavi and Guardiola were predictably asked to discuss Silva after the match.

“Who does not like Bernardo Silva? Just like De Bruyne or Haaland,” Xavi said. “But there is no news.

“He is a player that I love there are few like him but it already depends on City.”

The window will close next Thursday, with City’s incoming business seemingly done after adding Erling Haaland, Stefan Ortega, Kalvin Phillips and Sergio Gomez to Guardiola’s squad, along with Julian Alvarez, who was signed in January.

  • Emery says Foyth wants Villarreal stay but knows he could join Barca

Unai Emery says Juan Foyth wants to stay at Villarreal but knows he could join Barcelona before the transfer window closes.

Barca have targeted defender Foyth after missing out on Cesar Azpilicueta, who decided to stay at Chelsea.

Villarreal vice-president Jose Manuel Llaneza warned the Catalan giants they would have to meet the €42million release clause in order to sign the Argentina right-back.

Emery reiterated that former Tottenham full-back Foyth is not looking to leave, but the Villarreal head coach accepts there are no guarantees he will stay.

“Barca’s interest is real,” Emery told Cadena SER’s ‘El Larguero’. “It’s a position they need and it fits for them. The issue is whether the player wants it or not, he has always told me that he is very happy.

“He does not contemplate leaving and wants to stay. From here, I don’t know to what extent circumstances will go one way or the other.

“He’s an important player for us and he’s grown a lot in recent years. I don’t rule out that at any given moment the surprise will be against us, but the most normal thing is that he stays at Villarreal.”

Emery is hoping to add to his squad by signing striker Edinson Cavani, who is also wanted by Valencia.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal boss said: “I spoke to Edinson Cavani we have a good relationship, he wants to come to Spain. It’s possible.”

  • Lewandowski scores first goals for Barcelona on 34th birthday

Robert Lewandowski on Sunday crowned his 34th birthday with his first competitive goals for Barcelona when club faced Real Sociedad.

The summer signee from Bayern Munich scored two goals within the first minute and 68th minute of the game.

His first goal was assisted by Balde Martínez, and the second Fati Vieira.

Barcelona scored four goals whereas Real Sociedad managed to secure a goal.

Ousmane Dembele secured the second goal while Ansu Fati added the fourth.

The handsome victory was welcome following Barca’s modest start to their campaign – a 0-0 draw at home to Rayo Vallecano.

Lewandowski joined Barca in the summer in a £42m deal from Bayern, where he only had one year left on his contract, while another of their new signings, Brazil’s ex-Leeds United forward Raphinha, came on as a second-half substitute.

However, Barcelona were unable to field France central defender Jules Kounde as he has still not been registered because of financial reasons following his transfer from Sevilla at the end of July.

Barca are fifth in La Liga and play Manchester City in a friendly on Wednesday, with their next competitive game against Valladolid at the Nou Camp on Sunday.

  • Stalemate for Barcelona in La Liga opener

Barcelona were frustrated in their opening La Liga game as Rayo Vallecano held on for a goalless draw.

Robert Lewandowski was among the summer recruits that were making their debuts, but he could not break the deadlock.

The Poland striker was adjudged offside with a first-half effort, and smashed the best chance after the break wide.

Sergio Camello nearly grabbed a winner for Vallecano, while Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card.

Having registered four of their new signings to play only 24 hours before kick-off, there was a cause for optimism around the Nou Camp as the game began.

Barca had been unable to register new players because of La Liga financial regulations, but freed up funding with several “economic levers” which allowed Lewandowski, Andreas Christensen and Raphinha to start this game, while Franck Kessie was named on the bench.

The hosts had 21 shots to Vallecano’s four, but as the game wore on. tensions began to grow as the visitors remained resolute in defence.

Lewandowski, signed from Bayern Munich for £42.6m, had the best chance after the break when he spun his marker but could only fire wide as he failed to score on the opening day of a season for the first time in eight years.

  • Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong want to keep working together – President Laporta

Barcelona’s President, Joan Laporta, has said both the club and Frenkie de Jong are unwilling to part ways.

Manchester United are interested in signing Frenkie de Jong for a £63.5m deal. The deal is yet to be finalised.

But according to international reports, the Netherlands midfielder’s move could hit a deadlock.

President Joan Laporta said “He (Frenkie de Jong) has offers but we want him to stay and he wants to stay too.”

He further added that the 25-year-old is a player of “great quality”

De Jong has also been linked with a move to Chelsea.

Reports suggest that Barcelona want De Jong to take a wage cut should he remain at the Nou Camp, amid the club’s financial troubles.

The club are currently involved in a disagreement with De Jong over wages deferred by the Dutchman in the last couple of years which are now due to be paid.

Barcelona have so far spent over £120m this summer on new signings Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde, with Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie arriving on free transfers.

Barcelona raised money for transfers this summer by selling shares of their domestic television rights and in-house production company, Barca Studios.

However, the club has failed to register the players with La Liga requesting that more money be raised.

Should Barcelona not register their new signings in time, they will not be available for their season opener against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

  • Cesar Azpilicueta extends contract with Chelsea, barring Barcelona move

Cesar Azpilicueta will remain Chelsea’s captain as he has signed a contract extension with the club.

Barcelona expressed interest in the defender but their target will have to be at Stamford Bridge until 2024.

It is reported by international tabloids that Azpilicueta was heading into the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge and was reportedly open to a new challenge at Camp Nou.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is said to have played a major role in ensuring that Azpilicueta stayed.

On the recent development, he said “We are so happy that Cesar is staying at Chelsea for a minimum of two more years. We are thrilled with our captain showing his exemplary commitment and leadership yet again. There is still so much to do together.”

Also, the captain has expressed excitement about his decision to continue to play for Chelsea, a place he considers home.

“I am really happy to extend my stay at Chelsea, my home. It is almost 10 years since I first arrived and joined the club so I really feel the love and I am really excited for the new project we have in our hands,” he said.

Azpilicueta is hopeful that he will make more strides with Chelsea in the near future.

“I would like to say thank you to Mr Todd and Mr Behdad for giving me the opportunity to keep my journey at this amazing club and I am really looking forward to continuing our adventure. I am a really proud captain and I hope we can share many good memories together,” he added.

  • Barcelona to sign Jules Kounde on five-year deal with 1bn euro buyout clause

Barcelona have agreed to sign France centre-back Jules Kounde from Sevilla on a five-year contract that includes a 1bn euro (£837m) buyout clause.

Kounde, who has 11 France caps, will join for a reported transfer fee of 50m euros (£41.85m).

The 23-year-old made 133 appearances for Sevilla and won the Europa League in his first season after joining from Bordeaux in 2019.

Kounde, also wanted by Chelsea, is Barcelona’s fifth summer signing.

The defender’s arrival at the Nou Camp follows the Catalan club’s signing of Poland striker Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich for £42.6m and Brazil winger Raphinha’s arrival from Leeds in a £55m move.

Chelsea respectively, while France winger Ousmane Dembele signed a contract extension.

Kounde will be officially unveiled as a Barcelona player on Monday.

  • Laporta aspires for Messi to return to Barca

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has reiterated his desire to see Lionel Messi end his career at the Catalan club.

Laporta told ESPN last week that Messi’s story with Barca “is not over.” Coach Xavi Hernandez has said a return this summer is “impossible” but there is a window next year when the Argentine forward’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain is set to expire.

“It is an aspiration that I have as president and I would like it to happen,” Laporta told reporters at an event in New York when asked about Messi retiring at Barca.

“I was co-responsible for an ending that I consider provisional. Messi’s story at Barca did not end as we all wanted, it ended conditioned by financial reasons and we have a moral debt to him.

“In that sense, we would like the end of his career to be with the Barca shirt on, applauded at every stadium he plays at.”

Messi, 35, was forced to leave for PSG last August because Barcelona could not afford to renew his contract due to financial problems.

However, the sale of 25% of their domestic television rights for the next 25 years, worth over €600m according to Laporta, has allowed Barca to heavily invest this summer, with Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde all joining the club.

Barca’s spending has raised eyebrows across the world of football, with the club’s latest accounts showing gross debt of over €1 billion, but Laporta called on others to keep their noses out of the club’s business.

“I will give [the critics] the benefit of the doubt because maybe they thought we couldn’t do it, but they had not considered the strength of Barca and the drive of the new board,” he said.

“It’s down to a lack of knowledge and information about our club. To those that are surprised, I would say we are very much alive and back on the market — and there may be more surprises.

“The [sale of TV rights] has really strengthened the club. For 25 years, we have raised €667m. I would have preferred not [to have sold them], but I did what was necessary and the football [world] didn’t expect it.

“Everyone knows what they have to do and if I don’t get involved with others, I would ask that they don’t interfere with us. We’re going to compete on the pitch and we will see who’s done the best work. I don’t say that with a desire to argue, but people should worry about themselves.”

Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann is one of the people who have raised doubts about Barca’s spending, labelling them the “only club in the world that have no money, but then buy all the players they want.”

Laporta responded: “I would ask him to focus on [Bayern’s] accounts, which have received a significant amount of money for the transfer of Lewandowski. I respect everyone and won’t talk about other teams’ finances.”

Kessie and Christensen arrived for free, but Barca have spent over €150m on the signings of Raphinha, Lewandowski and Kounde, with Chelsea duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso still targets as well.

However, despite raising cash to complete the transfers, Barca still have work to do to be able to register all their new signings, as well as the new contracts signed by Sergi Roberto and Ousmane Dembele.

The Blaugrana still need to move on other players and reduce their wage bill to fit all the new arrivals within their LaLiga-imposed spending cap by the time they kick off the new campaign against Rayo Vallecano on Aug. 13.

Their limit stood at -€144m at the end of last season — the only negative cap in the Spanish league — but will increase significantly on the back of the capital raised this summer.

  • Barcelona agree €50m Kounde deal to see off Chelsea

Barcelona have reached an agreement to sign defender Jules Kounde from Sevilla for a base fee of €50 million ($50m/£42m) plus add-ons, GOAL can confirm.

He is expected to sign a four-year contract that will run until 2026.

Kounde had been pursued by Chelsea since at least last summer, but he preferred a move to Camp Nou.

Xavi specifically requested Barcelona approach Kounde to reinforce a defence that has also added Blues defender Andreas Christensen on a free transfer.

On top of an initial €50m fee, there will be between €5m and €10m in add-ons, GOAL understands.

The 23-year-old, who can play centre-back and right-back, represents Sevilla’s record transfer sale. However, Bordeaux will receive a sell-on sum of around €8m.

    Why didn’t Kounde join Chelsea?

Chelsea were close to finalising a deal for Kounde last summer, but Sevilla ultimately determined they wouldn’t sell him. The added time he spent on the market opened the door to Barcelona, where the defender always preferred to go.

    Barcelona could now raid Chelsea

Having already taken Christensen away from Thomas Tuchel, the Blaugrana now have their sights set on Chelsea duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso. Tuchel has been adamant that Azpilicueta won’t leave.

“It’s a tough question because I am not sure if I want to give Azpi what he wants,” Tuchel said last week. “At some point it is about what we want.

“I am not only in this role to give him what he wants. I am a manager for Chelsea who wants to do what’s best for Chelsea. He doesn’t like it but he understands.

“It is tough for him because the other club is permanently on him. On the first of September when things calm down, then he can play on his highest level.”

The Spaniard has long been linked to Barcelona though, and could be tempted by a transfer to his home country.

Chelsea have signed centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, but with several departures already confirmed and more rumoured, they will likely turn their attention to another defender, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Presnel Kimpembe top of their watch list.

  • Luis Suarez has ‘preliminary agreement’ to rejoin first club Nacional

Former Liverpool and Barcelona striker Luis Suarez says he has “a preliminary agreement” to rejoin his first club Nacional in his native Uruguay.

The 35-year-old is a free agent after leaving Atletico Madrid when his contract expired this summer.

Suarez’s return to Nacional is expected to be until at least the start of the 2022 World Cup in November.

In a video on social media, he said details would be finalised and “we hope to reach the agreement we all desire”.

Approximately 20,000 Nacional fans wore Suarez masks at a recent game after they were linked with the forward.

He made his professional debut for Nacional at 18, in 2005, helping them win the Uruguayan league title to earn a move to Europe with Groningen the following season.

Luis Suarez played for youth club Urreta in Montevideo
Suarez joined Nacional’s youth team at 14 and left the club in 2006 aged 19

“First of all I would like to say thank you for the great affection shown to me and my family these last few days,” said Suarez.

He added that this had made it impossible “to reject the possibility of returning to play for Nacional and we have a preliminary agreement with the club”.

  • Barcelona ‘agree’ Chelsea transfer hijack after missing out due to “having no money”

The Catalan giants were pipped to a deal for Koulibaly, who became the Blues’ second summer capture in a £33m switch earlier this month. Chelsea always appeared to be in pole position to land the coveted defender, with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis claiming that he had told Koulibaly that he couldn’t let him join Barcelona as they had “no money”.

But the La Liga outfit are set to go head-to-had against Chelsea again in the race for Kounde, who looks set to finally leave Sevilla this summer.

According to SPORT, Barcelona have ‘agreed terms’ on a four-year deal with Kounde, who had seemingly been on the verge of a move to Stamford Bridge. The Blues failed in an attempt to bring the 23-year-old to the Premier League last year but rekindled their interest after losing the services of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

The report goes on to outline that Barcelona’s bid will fall short of the £55m package that Chelsea have tabled for Chelsea but the Spanish giants intend to pay the entire sum up front and believe that Sevilla will ‘accept the terms’ of their offer.Kounde’s arrival would be the latest big-money deal that Barcelona have pulled off this summer despite concerns o. The Spanish giants have been busy in the transfer market, with Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski arriving for a combined sum of around £90m. Christensen and Franck Kessie have also moved to the Nou Camp on free transfers.

  • Barcelona sell out of Lewandowski shirts after club shop runs out of the letter W

Are you a Barcelona fan looking for a Robert Lewandowski jersey? Well, you may be disappointed.

The Polish striker has been the marquee signing for the Blaugrana in this summer transfer window and unsurprisingly the demand for his shirt has already hit the roof.

However the Nike store at the premises of Camp Nou has run out of stock – because they have run out of the letter W to put on their strips for fans.

‘Lewandowski’ – the spelling is the problem

Lewandowski has got two ‘w’s’ in his name, which has caught the store on a sticky wicket.

In a video posted on Instagram, an employee of the store is seen explaining to a fan the reason behind the crisis.

“We don’t have the letters ‘W’. And because he has two ‘W’s’ in his name, we have run out (of stock),” he stated.

When will Lewandowski make his Barcelona debut?

Barcelona rubber-stamped the signing of Lewandowski on Tuesday just hours before their pre-season friendly with Inter Miami.

The Polish forward took part in the warm-up with his new teammates but did not make his debut.

The Catalan club will return to action on Sunday against bitter rivals Real Madrid, and there is a probability that Xavi might use Lewandowski on that day.

  • Robert Lewandowski: Poland striker completes move from Bayern Munich to Barcelona

Barcelona have signed Poland striker Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich on a four-year contract worth 50m euros (£42.6m).

The 33-year-old had one year left on his contract with the German champions but in May said: “My story with Bayern is over.”

He has joined his new team-mates in Miami as part of Barcelona’s four-match tour of the United States.

“I’m finally here. I’m delighted to be at Barca,” Lewandowski said.

“The last few days have been very long, but the deal is done and now I can focus on a new chapter and challenge in my life.

“I’ve always wanted to play in La Liga and for the big clubs.

“I’m here to help Barca get back to the top and win as many titles as possible.”

Lewandowski, who has a buyout clause of 500m euros (£425.9m), joined Bayern on a free transfer in 2014 after his departure from Borussia Dortmund.

He scored 50 goals in 46 games last season as he helped Bayern win a 10th straight Bundesliga title.

Lewandowski has scored 344 times in 374 games for the club and is their second-highest scorer of all time behind Gerd Muller.

He has won the league in all eight of his seasons at Bayern and also won the Champions League in 2019-20.

Lewandowski is Barcelona’s fourth signing of the summer following Brazil winger Raphinha joining from Leeds United in a deal worth up to £55m, while Ivory Coast midfielder Franck Kessie and Denmark defender Andreas Christensen have arrived on free transfers after their respective contracts with AC Milan and Chelsea came to an end.

France winger Ousmane Dembele has also signed a contract extension with Barcelona this summer.

In August 2021, Barcelona president Joan Laporta revealed the club’s “very worrying” 1.35bn euro (£1.15bn) debt.

Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann said Barcelona is “the only club in the world that has no money but can buy every player”.

He added: “It’s kind of weird and kind of crazy for me but at the end they find solutions. I don’t know how.”

Meanwhile, Bayern have signed the Netherlands defender Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus on a five-year contract in a deal worth 77m euros (£65.6m).

  • Robert Lewandowski: Barcelona reach agreement with Bayern Munich to sign Poland striker

Barcelona have reached a “verbal agreement” with Bayern Munich to sign Poland striker Robert Lewandowski, says the Bayern president.

The 33-year-old, who has one year left on his Bayern contract, told the club last month that he wishes to leave.

Lewandowski scored 50 goals in 46 games last season as he helped Bayern win a 10th straight Bundesliga title.

“It’s good to have clarity for all parties,” said Bayern president Herbert Hainer.

“We have come to a verbal agreement with Barcelona.

“Robert is an incredible player and he won everything with us. We are incredibly grateful to him.”

Lewandowski joined Bayern on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2014 and has scored 344 times in 374 games for the club, making him their second-highest scorer of all time behind Gerd Muller.

The Pole has won the league in all eight of his seasons at Bayern and also helped the Bavarians win the Champions League in 2019-20.

Bayern have also announced that Germany winger Serge Gnabry, 27, has signed a contract extension until 2026.

Barcelona completed the signing of Raphinha from Leeds on Friday in a deal worth up to £55m having already signed Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen on free transfers earlier this month.

  • Manchester United: Frenkie de Jong’s move from Barcelona held up

Manchester United have agreed a £63.5m deal with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong but there is still no guarantee the move will go ahead.

Senior club figures have travelled to Barcelona to try to push through a deal for the Netherlands midfielder, 25.

They now know what they have to pay for manager Erik ten Hag’s key target, with the agreed deal equating to a bigger up-front payment and £8.5m in add-ons.

However, the player’s dispute with Barcelona is threatening the move.

The contractual disagreement centres on deferred payments that were included in the playmaker’s new four-year deal that only became active on 1 July.

There have been widespread reports in Spain that Barcelona have told De Jong he needs to leave for financial reasons.

However, the former Ajax player knows the Catalan must honour his contract if he chooses to remain at the Nou Camp and he is understood to be reluctant to leave without an agreement over his exit terms, which would take into account the deferred payments.

United have alternatives should De Jong not join but are willing to give the situation more time to resolve itself before taking an alternative course.

Meanwhile the club are also still unsure if Cristiano Ronaldo will return to pre-season training.

Confirmation that Chelsea are no longer interested in signing the 37-year-old has reduced his options away from Old Trafford.

BBC Sport understands there is substance to reports of a huge offer to Ronaldo from Saudi Arabia but the player is believed to want to keep playing at the highest possible level.

  • Barcelona forward Memphis Depay meets Hearts of Oak midfielder Sulley Muntari

Netherlands and Barcelona forward Memphis Depay met Hearts of Oak midfielder Sulley Muntari during his visit to Ghana as the pair played together on a pitch in Accra.

Muntari joined Depay for a community game in Madina, a suburb of Ghana’s capital.

In a video posted on social media, the former Manchester United ace was delighted to meet Muntari before the game.

Depay was involved in street football in Madina, alongside former Holland player Edgar Davis and Spartak Moscow star Quincy Promes.

Meanwhile, Sulley Muntari returned to his club Hearts of Oak for the final game of the season against Real Tamale United which they lost 4-1 at the Accra Sports stadium on Sunday.

Depay arrived in the West African country last Wednesday, having featured for Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League where he scored three goals in four games.

The 28-year-old regularly visits the country of his origins despite denying the chance to play for the Black Stars.

He paid a courtesy call on the Life Patron of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as well as the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo and presented a signed Barcelona jersey to both.

Earlier on Saturday, Depay paid a surprise visit to the Asante Kotoko’s camp.

The latest transfer gossip on Manchester United is that Bayern Munich have joined the race for the soon-to-be free agent Paul Pogba, with Juventus, Paris St-Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester City already in the hunt for the 29-year-old France midfielder’s signature.

The Mail says that United are monitoring Barcelona and Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong’s situation at the Nou Camp but Barca have put a £70m price tag on the 25-year-old, who favours a move to a side in the Champions League.

  • Father of Barcelona wonderkid Moriba reveals he cancelled flight to Manchester to scupper City transfer

The father of Barcelona wonderkid Ilaix Moriba has revealed that he cancelled a flight to Manchester just as the midfielder was about to join City in 2019.

Moriba made his long-awaited senior debut for Barca at the start of the year, and hit headlines after scoring his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win over Osasuna on March 6.

The 18-year-old is now being tipped to become a star for the Blaugrana’s next-generation, but his father claims his career path could have turned out differently had he not intervened when City tried to sign him two years ago.

Mamady Kourouma told SPORT: “With Barca, the negotiations [over his first professional contract] did not advance. We met with Txiki Begiristain [Man City sporting director] and he explained his entire project to us.

“We liked it because they bet a lot on him. A few weeks later we had the tickets to travel to Manchester and sign the contract.

“I cancelled it the morning that we had to go there. I wanted Ilaix to be an example and a reference for the next generations of Barca.

“His friends were gone. If he stayed, it was proof that Barca was betting on the youth players. We managed to reach an agreement where we all came out winning.”

Moriba joined Barca’s academy ranks in 2010 after a stint at Espanyol, and has since worked his way up to first-team level.

The teenager broke into the club’s B team at the age of just 17, earning comparisons with Manchester United star Paul Pogba due to his physicality, technical ability and vision.

Similarities were also drawn between Moriba and City legend Yaya Toure, who won two Premier League titles at Etihad Stadium after joining the club from Barcelona at the height of his career.

City were hopeful that Moriba would follow in Toure’s footsteps, but he opted to continue his development at Camp Nou by committing his future to the Blaugrana through to 2022.

Moriba will be back in contention for a place in Ronald Koeman’s squad when Barca host Huesca in La Liga on Monday night. He could also feature when the Spanish giants travel to Real Sociedad five days later.

  • Messi will be pushed out of Barcelona if he doesn’t accept pay cut – Presidential Candidate

Lionel Messi will leave Barcelona if he does not accept a pay cut, according to presential candidate Emili Rousaud.

Messi’s future remains an important topic at embattled La Liga giants Barca after the superstar captain handed in a transfer request following a tumultuous 2019-20 campaign.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner was tipped to join Premier League powerhouse Manchester City before opting to remain in Spain, though he has since been linked to Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain and Inter.

Rousaud, who is in the running for the presidential election which takes place on January 24 following Josep Maria Bartomeu’s resignation in October, discussed Messi’s future amid the coronavirus pandemic

“We’ll have to sit down with Messi and ask him to make a salary cut,” Rousaud told ARA.

“Right now, with things as they are, it’s unsustainable.

“We’ll ask him to make the sacrifice. If there’s no agreement, then Messi will leave.”

Rousaud added: “Messi has written the most brilliant pages in the club’s history. We have to honour our legends, but the reality is what it is.

“I believe that things have to be said as they are. We can’t fool our members. We’ll make every effort to ensure he stays, but always with the interests of the club first.”

Messi scored as Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Levante in La Liga on Sunday.

After losses to Juventus in the Champions League and Cadiz in La Liga, Barca bounced back courtesy of Messi’s 76th-minute winner to move within nine points of competition leaders Real Sociedad but with two games in hand.

Barca will a chance to close the gap on Real Sociedad when the two teams meet in the league at Camp Nou on Wednesday evening.

Messi has been involved in 37 goals in his La Liga career against Levante (22 goals and 15 assists), more than against any other team in the competition.

The 33-year-old has scored 449 goals in La Liga and he is just one shy of becoming the first player to reach 450 with just one club in the top five European leagues.

  • Barcelona sack Quique Setien after Bayern thrashing

Barcelona have sacked manager Quique Setien, three days after his side’s humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Setien, who was appointed in January, has been in charge for just 25 matches.

Barca finished second in La Liga this season, five points behind Real Madrid.

Barca’s thrashing by German champions Bayern on Friday was the fourth time in the past five years they have been knocked out at the quarter-final stage of Europe’s elite competition.

Setien, who replaced Ernesto Valverde at the Nou Camp, had said after the defeat that it was “time for us to review and take the decisions which are needed for the future”.

On Monday, the Catalan club announced that 61-year-old Setien had left his role.

A new coach will be announced “in the coming days”, said the club.

“This is the first decision within the framework of a broad restructuring of the first team,” it added.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique said he would be the “first to leave” if the club wished to make changes.

  • Messi and Suarez help Barca into quarter-finals

Barcelona set up a Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich after overcoming Napoli on a night of high VAR drama at the Nou Camp.

With the tie evenly poised at 1-1 after February’s first leg, Dries Mertens set the tone for an incident-packed first half, striking the post for the visitors after 90 seconds.

But it was five-time European champions Barcelona who made the breakthrough when Clement Lenglet headed in Ivan Rakitic’s corner after 10 minutes.

Lionel Messi doubled his side’s advantage in style as he wriggled past three defenders, before bending a shot between another two Napoli players and into the far side of David Ospina’s goal.

The Barcelona captain thought he had further added to his tally of 115 Champions League goals in 142 games just seven minutes later, but a lengthy video assistant referee review deemed he had handled the ball in controlling Frenkie de Jong’s pass.

Another VAR review then awarded Barcelona a penalty in first-half injury time after Kalidou Koulibaly felled Messi – and Luis Suarez stepped up to net his 25th Champions League goal.

  • Bayern crush Chelsea to set up Barca quarter-final

Bayern Munich will meet Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals after Robert Lewandowski inspired them to a crushing 7-1 aggregate win over Chelsea.

Having established a commanding 3-0 first leg lead at Stamford Bridge back in February, Bayern quickly made it 5-0 on aggregate when Lewandowski – from the penalty spot – and Ivan Perisic scored inside 25 minutes at the Allianz Arena.

Chelsea pulled a goal back through Tammy Abraham after a rare mistake by keeper Manuel Neuer, but Bayern’s class shone through.

Substitute Corentin Tolisso made it 6-1 on aggregate when he volleyed home unmarked inside the six-yard area before Poland forward Lewandowski, who now has 53 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions this season, headed the fourth to finish the match with two goals and two assists.

Bayern will now face Barca in a mouth-watering one-game knockout format in Lisbon on Friday.

  • Barca’s final shot in the dark to save troubled season and Setien

If Barcelona have been weighed down by the burden of expectation in recent years in the Champions League, they should feel freer than ever ahead of Saturday’s last 16, second leg against Napoli. Few expect an easy passage into the quarter-finals and if they get there, even fewer expect them to survive against Bayern Munich, the tournament’s most convincing team so far, who will surely finish the job against Chelsea in their last-16 tie.

With the advantage of an away goal from the 1-1 draw in Italy in February, Barca would usually feel confident against a side that just finished seventh in Serie A, and at the Camp Nou, where they have suffered only one defeat in 58 Champions League games.

But after a miserable end to La Liga, that flipped a two-point lead over Real Madrid into a five-point deficit, Barcelona resume their European tilt as outsiders, behind Bayern, Juventus, perhaps Atletico Madrid given their favourable draw, and certainly the winner of Real Madrid and Manchester City.

“The fans are running out of patience because we’re not giving them anything,” said Lionel Messi as Barca’s title chase unravelled. “If we want to fight for the Champions League, a lot has to change because like this, we will lose to Napoli as well.”

The hope might be Barcelona can turn pessimism to their advantage, if the result is a team free of tension, able to view the Champions League as a fresh start after a failed campaign in Spain.

When they capitulated against Roma and Liverpool, Barca’s players talked about crumbling under pressure, a weakness that has been exposed all too many times since.

“They were strong and from a psychological point of view they fed off our fragility,” said then-coach Ernesto Valverde after the Liverpool loss. “They came at us and we failed to react,” said Sergio Busquets of Roma.

The obsession with winning the Champions League and ending what is now a four-year drought both for the club and, crucially, Messi, has been all-consuming.

Domestic success has been shrugged off, with results in Europe proving definitive regardless of what happens elsewhere.

Yet nobody ranks Barcelona among the favourites this time around. The players might feel they have little to lose, even if current coach Quique Setien is likely to lose his job if they go out against Napoli or get humiliated by Bayern.

    – Not all bad? –

There are caveats to the chaos too. Despite only seven wins from 11 games after the restart, Barca were impressive in spells and most effective against bolder opponents, the like of which they are more likely to meet in Europe.

“You can’t tell me it’s all been a disaster, it hasn’t,” said a defiant Setien last month.

They also have Messi, who comes in on the back of three weeks rest, and alongside him, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann, an attacking trio that should be the envy of every team left in the competition.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen is one of the world’s outstanding goalkeepers. Ansu Fati and Riqui Puig are hugely exciting young talents. Without fans, Barcelona’s mental fragility could be less exposed, their technical quality more decisive.

And yet still the sense is of a team relying on the intangibles: Moments of individual genius, momentum in a knock-out tournament, liberation from the burdens of expectation.

“We have to be more consistent, more reliable,” said Setien last month. “If we manage to have a game like the one we played against Villarreal, where everything went well, it will undoubtedly give us a chance to win the Champions League.”

In this format, with only four one-off matches to win, there is perhaps no better year to be clinging to the hope of the unpredictable.

But for a club like Barcelona, it feels a little desperate, a final shot in the dark at the end of a long and turbulent year. There should be something more.

  • Neymar: Barcelona president says it is ‘unfeasible’ to sign Brazilian during Covid-19 pandemic

It is “unfeasible” for Barcelona to re-sign Neymar from Paris St-Germain in the current economic climate, says the club’s president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

A move for Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez has also been affected.

Bartomeu told Spanish newspaper Sport that Barca generated 200m Euros less than expected between March and June because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“All the big European clubs are affected,” he said. “This isn’t going to last a year, but three or four.”

Brazilian forward Neymar joined PSG for a world record 222m Euros (£199m) in August 2017 but Barcelona tried to re-sign the player last summer.

“Neymar? In this situation, it’s unfeasible,” said Bartomeu. “Nor does PSG want to sell him.

“Barca have spoken with Inter about Lautaro, but the talks have stopped. The situation doesn’t invite large investments.”

Bartomeu went on to explain that Barcelona lost 200m euros between March and June. He added: “In the 2020-21 season we expected to post 1.1 bn euros, but we’ll have 30% of that.

“If the situation of the pandemic doesn’t improve, there will be no spectators, no museum, no stores open, and money will continue to be lost.

“It forces us to be very rigorous in management: we must review which investments are essential and which can wait.”

Bartomeu also confirmed the club opened up disciplinary proceedings against midfielder Arthur, who is joining Juventus as part of a swap deal with Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic, after he failed to return to the club from holiday.

“We reached the agreement that until the Champions League ended, he would continue playing for Barca. He could help us,” said Bartomeu, who has been Barca president since 2014.

“But he didn’t return from his mini-break so we have opened a file on him.”

  • Barcelona held to goalless draw by Sevilla

Spanish league leaders Barcelona were held to a goalless draw at Sevilla, leaving the title race wide open with eight games remaining.

The result means second-placed Real Madrid could move level on points with Barcelona when they travel to Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Lionel Messi’s free-kick skimmed the bar in the first half but Barcelona were frustrated by Sevilla’s defence.

Lucas Ocampos also hit the crossbar for the hosts before the break.

Sevilla sat deep, often playing with five at the back, and it proved effective as Barcelona saw lots of the ball but failed to create many clear-cut opportunities.

Messi’s free-kick was the closest they came, and Luis Suarez’ first-time strike almost sneaked in minutes before full-time, but Sevilla had bursts of attacking promise – Ocampos and Munir El Haddadi forcing two smart saves from Ter Stegen from close range in the first half.

Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann came on as a substitute in the 76th minute in an attempt to find a winner but did not make an impact.

On-loan Real Madrid defender Sergio Reguilon had a great chance to score for Sevilla in stoppage time when the ball fell kindly for him in an unmarked position in the box but he hit it straight at Ter Stegen.

The league leaders next play Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday, 23 June, while Messi remains one off 700 career goals.

  • Barcelona join chase for Ghana ace Thomas Partey – Report

Spanish giants Barcelona have joined a long list of clubs chasing the signature of Ghana international Thomas Partey, GHANASoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.

The midfielder, who turns 27 today, has been a long time target of English powerhouse Arsenal, but the Gunners are yet to make an official bid for Partey.

Meanwhile, Barcelona is set to gazump the move by triggering the Atletico Madrid star’s 50 million euros release clause.

Following Barcelona’s success in the signing of former Rojiblanco Antoine Griezeman, the Catalan giants are set to make another coup in the camp of their rivals.

  • Messi is an inspiration – Braithwaite opens up on life at Barcelona

Barcelona forward Martin Braithwaite has described Lionel Messi as an “inspiration” as he reflected on his first few months at Camp Nou.

The 29-year-old was a surprise signing in February after injuries to Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele left Barcelona short on attackers. While yet to score for the club across three appearances, Braithwaite did contribute two assists on his debut as he gets used to playing with the Catalans.

Messi is one player the Dane hasn’t struggled to gel with as he noted the Argentina legend has already begun improving his game.

“It changes a lot, of course,” Braithwaite told Goal when asked about his opinion on Messi now he plays alongside him.

“He gives so much confidence to the team because he can make the difference and also helped me personally to be a better player with his advice and how he sees football. He is really an inspiration.”

Signed in the wake of an injury to Suarez, Braithwaite may now struggle for minutes when the Liga season resumes this week with the Uruguayan star now fully fit again, but rather than despair at his likely limited role at Camp Nou, the Denmark international is eager to learn from Suarez.

“Honestly I don’t think in that kind of way. I am so happy that Luis is back because when I came here he was injured and I haven’t played with him,” he said. “I want to learn from him, he is one of the best strikers in the world and I am happy he is back.”

After previously playing for the likes of Leganes, Middlesbrough and Toulouse, Braithwaite has found things quite different on the training ground at Camp Nou.

“The training is totally different to what I was used to so I can feel I am developing a lot in the technical level,” Braithwaite said. “As a human I can feel I have more attention in such a big club like this but you must learn to live with all this attention.”

One year ago, the prospect of Braithwaite being a Barcelona player would have been laughed off by many, but the fact it has happened convinces the man himself that no dream should be deemed too hard to reach as he hopes his time at the club will show his grandchildren anything is possible.

He said: “I just want to tell them everything is possible in life. If you put your mind in it you can achieve your dreams.”

  • Barcelona is my dream club – Emmanuel Lomotey

Ghana U-23 midfielder Emmanuel Lomotey has hinted on his dream to play for Spanish giants Barcelona.

According to the 22-year-old, he is confident that the dream would come true at the right time in his career.

“I want to play at the Camp Nou, Barcelona is my dream club and playing for them will be a happy moment in my life because it is the club I support and I know it will happen one day,” he said.

Lomotey currently plays for Spanish second-tier side, Extremadura UD. He joined them on July 1, 2017, after winning the Dreams FC player of the season award.

He started with the club’s under 19 team before being loaned out to Villarreal in 2018 where he remained a constant figure in their team B squad.

The talented midfielder returned to Extremadura last season upon their qualification to the Spanish second tier and has been the engine of the team.

On the international scene, he was part of the Black Stars B team that won the 2017 WAFU tournament in Ghana.

He featured also for the Black Meteors team that failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games.

  • Barcelona and Real Madrid players begin virus testing

Players at Barcelona and Real Madrid started to undergo coronavirus tests on Wednesday as La Liga clubs planned to return to restricted training ahead of the proposed resumption of the season next month.

Barca captain Lionel Messi and France international Antoine Griezmann were among players pictured arriving one by one in their cars at the club’s training centre early Wednesday morning.

Players at Madrid, including Eden Hazard and Karim Benzema, also underwent health checks at Real’s training base on the outskirts of the city.

Results from the coronavirus tests are typically known within 48 hours. The testing is part of the league’s strict medical protocol with which teams must comply before a return to training.

Atletico Madrid, who will also carry out tests Wednesday, are aiming to resume training immediately once the results are known if all goes to plan.

The first of a four-phase de-escalation programme announced by the Spanish government last week would allow players to initially train alone, with a maximum of six players allowed on the pitch.

Players will be expected to arrive on club premises already in their kit and wear a mask and gloves when not training. After each session they will be given a bag with clothes for the next day.

La Liga’s programme will then permit training in small groups before a return to larger team sessions.

In the fourth and final phase, scheduled for early June, the government have said outside events can go ahead when attended by fewer than 400 people.

La Liga is proposing to complete its season behind closed doors, with games starting again in the middle of June.

“People’s health is paramount, so we have a comprehensive protocol to safeguard the health of everyone involved as we work to restart La Liga,” league president Javier Tebas said on Monday.

“Circumstances are unprecedented, but we hope to start playing again in June and finish our 19/20 season this summer.”

Spain has been one of the worst-hit countries in the world by the coronavirus pandemic, with almost 26,000 deaths in the country according to the latest figures on Wednesday.

  • Selling Arthur would be a mistake – Barcelona urged

Former Barcelona technical director Robert Fernandez says it would be a “mistake’ for Arthur to leave the club amid links to Juventus.

Fernandez was responsible for bringing Arthur to the club in 2018 as Barcelona signed the Brazilian midfielder from Gremio.

The 23-year-old has made 67 appearances for Barcelona so far, but Goal can confirm that Juventus are keen on signing Arthur, and would be willing to explore a swap deal with the Catalan club.

Arthur has insisted that he wants to stay with the club amid interest from the Serie A champions, despite being “flattered” by the prospect of an offer.

And Fernandez, who was also responsible for the signing of Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, says it would be a mistake for the midfielder to leave.

“I don’t think Arthur is leaving. We are going through a particular moment where a lot of news is not checked well enough,” Fernandez told Goal .

“I sincerely think it would be a mistake if he is sold because he is a young player. When we signed him we paid a large amount due to his qualities, age and projection. We thought he was going to have big growth at Barca and now I think he deserves a better status.

“His first season was good but, after that, he hasn’t been driven towards favourable situations. In addition, he suffered some small injuries which probably made it harder to have continuity in the starting line-up but we are still speaking about a player with huge individual skill, with Barcelona DNA even if he didn’t grow in La Masia.

“He is a player who has everything to become an important player.”

Arthur made 44 appearances last campaign, helping Barcelona claim La Liga in his first season in Spain.

This season, though, Arthur has been limited to just 23 appearances, although he has added four goals to his tally after failing to score in his first season with Barca.

Fernandez says that the midfielder is in need of more continuity and more games if he is to find the comfort needed to be at his best.

    Arthur Melo Barcelona

“He must find the coach able to bring out the football he has inside,” he said.

“He did great with Valverde in his first season, the coach found the ideal role for him next to Busquets but he hasn’t had continuity in this season. The first season is used to be the adaptation one and he did great. He played very well at a high level and we were all delighted with him.

“I can’t understand discussing a player who not long ago made you happy. I think when something was working and is now not at his best, it is important to keep the same perception and style.

“If he played well in the first season, why didn’t he reach that level in the second one? I’ve seen he doesn’t finish the games and this is a big mistake, it brings you to an uncomfortable situation. You can think about a player that he is not in a good physical rhythm but to increase it, you must make him suffer and to play 90 minutes.

“I hope he gets brought in more in the next season and he can become the important player he must be because he has an extraordinary quality and pure FCB DNA.”

When playing at a club like Barcelona, rumours will always be something you have to deal with as the club are often linked with big transfer moves.

And, with rumours surrounding Arthur continuing to swirl, Fernandez hopes that the midfielder looks to Ivan Rakitic as an example on how to deal with exit reports.

“I hope it doesn’t affect Arthur. The people around him should help him to remember the important things in life, as Rakitic did last season,” he said.

“Ivan is a player with a great personality and is used to playing in very difficult situations but nobody likes to read in the newspapers the club is thinking of selling you. It is not easy at all for a player in such a situation and such an experience.

“Players must be protected so it would be good if these things could be quickly denied because it is not good for them. It can only make the player angry and to lower his concentration and performances.”

  • Barcelona to give sponsor Nou Camp naming rights with revenue used to fight coronavirus

Barcelona are to give a sponsor naming rights to the Nou Camp for the first time and donate all the revenue to fighting coronavirus.

Barca’s stadium – which is known as Camp Nou in Catalan – has never had another name since opening in 1957.

The La Liga champions have given the title rights to the Barca Foundation, who will find a sponsor for 2020-21.

“Revenue will be used to fund research projects and the worldwide fight against the pandemic,” the club said.

“FC Barcelona and the Barca Foundation consider it a necessity that at this time of humanitarian crisis, the institution should use all its resources to fight against the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences.”

Spain is one of only four countries in the world to have more than 20,000 coronavirus-related deaths to date.

Barcelona did not have a shirt sponsor until 2010 when they signed a deal with the Qatar Foundation, although charity Unicef had appeared on their shirts from 2006.

  • Kevin-Prince Boateng recounts stint with Las Palmas and Barcelona

Kevin-Prince Boateng has narrated his time in Spain with Las Palmas and Barcelona, saying he “just wanted to have fun”.

Having already played for Hertha Berlin, Tottenham Hotspur, Borussia Dortmund, Portsmouth, AC Milan and Schalke, the 33-year-old Ghana international joined La Union Deportiva for the 2016-17 season.

He scored 10 goals in La Liga as the Gran Canaria outfit finished an impressive 11th having gained promotion from the second tier for that season.

“In Spain, I was at a point in my career that everyone was wondering how I was,” Boateng said in an Instagram Live session with Thierry Henry.

“I went there without a goal, I just wanted to have fun and play football. When it becomes work, football loses a little love.

“I asked where Las Palmas was and when they replied Gran Canaria, I thought “but are they holidays or football?”

After one season with Las Palmas, Boateng went on to play for Eintracht Frankfurt and Sassuolo before joining Barcelona in the second half of the 2018-19 season.

He became the first Ghanaian to feature for the club, playing four times and winning the La Liga title.

“Barcelona is fantastic, I was 32 years old, I was back on the big stages. It was unbelievable,” Boateng continued.

“When I signed I had the car keys with my name, then I had the press conference.

“The only player who can win all the games, is [Lionel] Messi.”

Boateng is presently on the books of Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas, on loan from Serie A outfit Fiorentina.

  • Neymar welcome anytime at Barca – Suarez

Neymar “will always be welcome” back at Barcelona, the Spanish giants’ striker Luis Suarez told Mundo Deportivo on Wednesday.

Neymar left Barca in a world record move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 but has been persistently linked to a possible return to the Camp Nou.

Suarez told the paper: “Everybody knows ‘Ney’, we all know the affection we have for him in the dressing room.

“His ability is indisputable and he still has so much to show. He will always be welcome in the changing room, we appreciate him a lot.”

Suarez, 33, recovering from right knee surgery, said it was “complicated” to talk about players joining Barca at this time of crisis with the coronavirus pandemic.

“But I can talk about players, and these are huge players,” he commented when asked by the paper to discuss the rumours linking the 28-year-old Neymar with a Barca return.

The Uruguayan also had warm words for Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez, the 22-year-old Argentine whose name also been associated with a move to Catalonia.

“Lautaro is a player who is progressing in Italy, he is a flexible centre-forward, with spectacular moves and that shows what a great a striker he is.”

Questioned about how any eventual new signings would fit in Suarez said: “There will always be a healthy rivalry between us, and while we are all focused on the same objective, that is winning, any players who come in to help the team achieve its aims will always be welcome.”

He then turned to last week’s deal with the club to cut players’ wages by 70%, with Barca captain Lionel Messi accusing the club of undermining the squad during negotiations.

“There were some things that were said that were false, like that the players didn’t want to see their salaries reduced, that some were against it.

“That they (club management) were saying that without being part of the squad was annoying. It annoyed all the players.”

Suarez emphasised all the players were united from the start in wanting to help the club as much as possible.

“The deal was delayed because it’s not easy to revoke the salary of 22-23 players.

“It was worked out between the club and the players’ lawyers, but it wasn’t easy to do.”

  • Myron Boadu on Barcelona’s radar

Barcelona are among a host of top clubs linked with Ghana and AZ Alkmaar striker Myron Boadu as Quique Setién weighs up his options in attack heading into 2020/21.

Boadu has been one of the young players in Europe that has made the headlines this season.

He has scored 20 goals and provided eight assists in 39 games so far in all competitions for AZ Alkmaar.

His fine form in the Dutch Eredivisie this term has reportedly attracted interest from Arsenal, Barcelona Real Madrid, AC Milan and Ajax.

Barcelona are looking at signing the 19-year-old together with two promising Dutch prodigies namely Calvin Stengs of AZ Alkmaar and PSV’s Donyell Malen as a cheaper alternative to other marque signings like Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez.

The Spanish champions already have a Dutch player in their squad, Frenkie de Jong who joined the club from Ajax last summer.

Neymar is Barcelona’s main interest this summer but Barça are juggling several options in the search for a star player next season.

  • Late Messi penalty takes Barcelona top of La Liga

Lionel Messi scored a late penalty as Barcelona edged to victory over Real Sociedad to move top of La Liga.

Barca go two points clear of Real Madrid, but Zinedine Zidane’s side can regain top spot with victory at Real Betis on Sunday (kick-off 20:00 GMT).

The home side’s spot-kick was awarded for Robin le Normand’s handball, which the referee saw on the pitchside monitor, allowing Messi to convert.

Alexander Isak smashed a shot wide from Sociedad’s best chance of the game.

Barca thought they had a second in the 95th minute when Jordi Alba stroked a finish into an open net, but substitute Ansu Fati was adjudged to be narrowly offside by VAR.

Former Middlesbrough striker Martin Braithwaite, who signed for Barca in an emergency transfer outside the transfer window, was dangerous in the first half, striking a couple of shots straight at Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro.

Ivan Rakitic had a thumping effort from the edge of the area pushed away, while Gerard Pique headed straight at Remiro from inside the six yard box.

Messi seemed to be having an off day when he side-footed a shot wide from 10 yards out and curled another off target, but the skipper proved to be the match winner, clipping home an 81st minute penalty for his 19th league goal of the season.

  • Barcelona fight back to draw in Naples

Antoine Griezmann’s first away Champions League goal since February 2017 ensured Barcelona secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw in the first leg of their last-16 tie with Napoli at the San Paolo.

Dries Mertens brilliantly equalled a club record in the first half with his 121st strike for Napoli (30), but after the Belgian was forced off injured early in the second period, Barcelona asserted themselves, and duly levelled when Griezmann crashed home from Nelson Semedo’s cross (57).

Jose Callejon had a glorious chance to restore Napoli’s lead when put through by substitute Arkadiusz Milik but Marc-Andre ter Stegen made a vital save.

Arturo Vidal was dismissed for two quickfire yellow cards as a result of the same incident as he clashed with Mario Rui (89), but Barcelona will seek to protect their away goal when these two sides meet again for the second leg on March 18 at the Nou Camp.

  • Barca gain narrow win over Getefe

Barcelona went level on points with La Liga leaders Real Madrid after grinding out a narrow win over Getafe.

Allan Nyom appeared to put third-placed Getafe ahead but his goal was ruled out by the video assistant referee for a foul on Samuel Umtiti.

Antoine Griezmann clipped Barca ahead from Lionel Messi’s excellent first-time pass and Sergi Roberto scored their second from Junior Firpo’s cross.

But Angel Rodriguez’s volley set up a tense finale.

The 32-year-old, who Barcelona are considering signing in an emergency deal, guided home an expert finish from 18 yards out from Jaime Mata’s cross. That was his eighth goal as a substitute this season.

Getafe almost rescued a point but Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s excellent save denied Angel a second.

Under La Liga rules, if a player is out for more than five months, then clubs can apply to sign one player from another La Liga club.

With Ousmane Dembele ruled out for up to six months – and Luis Suarez also sidelined – Barca are looking at several options, including Angel, who has a £7.5m buyout clause.

Messi has now failed to score in four consecutive La Liga appearances for the first time since October 2013 to January 2014 – although he had set up Barca’s previous six league goals before Roberto’s strike.

  • Rakitic keen to play with Ronaldo but declares Messi best of all time

Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic admits he would like to play with Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo as doubts remain over his future at Camp Nou.

Rakitic was heavily linked to Serie A duo Juventus and Inter before the transfer window closed, while Premier League giants Manchester United were also reportedly interested.

It came as Rakitic was reportedly offered to Ligue 1’s Paris Saint-Germain as part of a deal to prise Neymar back to Camp Nou at the start of the season.

Rakitic continues to be linked with Italian champions Juve and when asked if he would like to play alongside five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo, the 31-year-old told Bleacher Report Football he’s very much open to the prospect.

“Of course I would. He is also one of the greatest players in history,” Rakitic replied. “You enjoy watching him play and he’s doing well at Juventus.”

Rakitic is currently team-mates with Barca captain and six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, who he declared is the greatest of all time.

“It’s amazing to play with him – he’s special. There have been great players in every era, but I’m sure he’s been the best in the last 15 years,” Rakitic said.

“In my opinion, I think he’s the best of all time. Being with him for six years has been incredible.”

Rakitic previously vented his frustration with how head coach Ernesto Valverde and his staff were treated upon their sacking in January, admitting he considered leaving Barcelona.

“It’s a part of football,” Rakitic said. “You have to understand that and be ready [to potentially leave] in January.

“You have to be happy, you have to think about your family, and if I play for Barcelona I am happy.”

The Croatia star was also asked to weigh in on the future of Neymar and admitted he’d welcome the Brazilian back to Camp Nou with open arms.

“First of all I would like to have Neymar in my team for sure, he needs to decide what’s best for him as he’s my big friend,” he said.

“I want to see him happy and for sure when he is happy he is one of the best players in the world.”
